Cold Freeze, He-Caz, and Slaves to the Machine

and welcome to the 92nd chapter in our powers

of grayscale series with me for this journey

into the Masters of the universe franchise is

TFG one Mike. Hello You're here no, I'm not here

the question is the more impressive because okay,

we're doing this new adventures thing, right?

we're talking about the new adventures of P man

and that may be impressive in and of itself,

but I think the more impressive part Mike is

that One podcast show that you and I have managed

to do 92 well, technically 91 episodes in a row

with each other and We haven't killed each other

Yeah, this is not masked mayhem where one of

us just runs away like a little pony girl or

care bear Whatever the hell in the history of

all the shows we've done together I don't think

we've ever had one show where we did a stretch

of this many episodes together To cast we never

had 90 episodes together. No There was yeah,

there was certain place Yeah, send a mask I gave

up after So, I mean this is a impressive outside

of the one special episode where you guys Talked

about the comics episode with you. So yeah, we're

setting some certain records getting along together

and not killing each other and I think it's a

Partially because we're in agreement with most

of these episodes. The sad thing is, folks, we

both live in the same state now, so he can really

come to my house and beat me up if he doesn't

agree with me. But I think, for the most part,

during this whole He -Man, we've had individual

episodes of He -Man, She -Ra, etc. that we've

disagreed on, obviously. Obviously. And you can

see, if you just want to check out the wrap -up

episodes of both of those series, we definitely

have different top tens and bottom tens, even

though there's some similarities, we have differences.

But overall, I think, for the most part, we...

are in agreement with our feelings on every single

one of these four series so yeah pretty much

how much we disagree from here on out because

it might just be like sitting singing kumbaya

around the campfire for the next you know 35

episodes it's gonna be kind of weird Yeah. I'll

find something to argue with you about. Hey,

maybe we'll argue today because in this episode

of Masters in Space, we will be giving you our

thoughts on another three episodes of the news

about how did this series last this long? Episode

28, Cold Freeze, Episode 29, Hecaz, and Episode

30, Slaves to the Machine. So we hope you're

ready, because yes, again, we are going back

into space. This won't even be worth watching.

First today is episode 28, Cold Freeze. That's

what we feel like is happening to our bodies

as we watch this series. It aired somewhere around

October 17th, 1990. Written by Kevin O'Donnell,

the son of Primus withdraws out of regeneration

behind a shell. I don't even know what that means

because an ice age breaks out on planet. Planet

he man must find a way to preserve Primus from

the downfall. That's a terrible synopsis as well

But I can't blame them after once you're in 28

episodes of the series is anybody really trying

to write good Synopsis is based on these premises.

I don't think so So anyways cold freeze Sun's

not doing what it needs to be doing and we have

an ice age. What do you think? Somebody call

Elsa, please Just let it go. Oh my god this is

a this is a garbage plot yeah this plot like

I had I it's a garbage plot but it isn't even

like worth even anything yeah yeah but like for

me I I have three total notes for this when we

get to those later so do I it's like no like

seriously this is one of those like I feel like

we should I shouldn't write an article for geek

cast radio and it's gonna be like episodes you

are required to have if you have a cartoon in

the 80s 90s and one of them is the Sun's not

working right or the sun's being blocked or we're

in some type of ice age, because I swear that

happens in almost every series. Or, you know,

President Brooks wants to steal all your air.

No, what I'm just saying, there's like certain

standard things like there's the there's the

somebody's parading around in the disguise that

makes him look like a good character and gets

into the camp. based on looking as a good character.

There's the clone episode where you have two

Optimus Primes and you have to figure out which

one is right and which one is wrong. There's

the nature episode where we have the sun not

working and you have to deal with an ice age

or a drought or something. It's like required.

Shit that you have to put in these cartoons because

nobody's creative enough to come up with their

own ideas And we oh man when we get to the ranting

section, I mean the good I'm gonna go on a major

rant about the lack of originality in this episode

specifically because this episode made me mad

Yeah, this episode was just gone awful. They've

all like Hey, we gave a four or four and a half

out at some point in the last couple episodes

Yeah, maybe on our on our curve scale that we're

using. Yeah, really. I mean like seriously though

on average We're probably giving anywhere. Well

for me zeros You don't give a lot of those unless

you absolutely are ready to Yeah, I'm sure but

like for me it's either zeros or point fives

for both of us yeah yeah for both of it's probably

an average of between one and a half and three

depending on there's no chance this doesn't get

the lowest average rating out of three series

we've done so far yeah absolutely there's no

chance Somebody call this Vince McMahon because

this series has no chance in hell no chance Break

when we come back we're gonna get into those

three good or bad moments of this episode Mike

we're at the Palace of Eternos moments in the

snake mountain moments And I am going to allow

you to go first because I only have three notes,

but they're gonna take some time I Have three

was nice seeing a full image of the sorceress

instead of just her you know floaty head thing

I thought that was kind of cool other than that

going over to snake mountain someone get these

people a can of Yeah, I'm sure President Scrooge

has a few extra I mean seriously this whole plot

of oh We're going to put a shield or a blockage

around the Sun or whatever because your planet

relies on solar power and yada yada yada and

everybody's gonna die without the Sun and Really?

Seriously, I would rather watch He -Man and She

-Ra just you know rip up Rivers of water and

throw them halfway across the tourney of and

watch this crap How can anything make you miss

that but it does The power of the Sun yay, my

fiance Karen and I anytime the Sun just invades

our space We're like stupid giant yellow ball.

Go away. It's like I get it We need sunlight

to survive and all that but there are times especially

like in the early morning times. It's like no

Go away No garlic Sun Anyway, what do you got?

All right. First of all, the one good thing about

this episode is that Krita finds her way back

in the series. I don't know where she's been,

but she makes an appearance. So I put a Krita

sighting. Holy shit. I could deal with some more

of that and anything else that's not scientists

and not nonsense. Okay. Let me set this rant

up a little bit. I don't mind Hang on folks if

he has to set the rant up, you know It's gonna

be great and all awful and all it to say it like

yeah Wow, okay I don't mind when a property or

a show or a cartoon or whatever might be He pays

homage to something from the past is inspired

by something From the past or uses a general

framework of something that existed previously

because let's face it There's only only so many

stories you can tell they're all you know If

you boil them down to their core that are all

based on you know Whatever it is the four or

five stories that everything is basically within

that framework So I I get that you're gonna have

to draw inspiration from other things at time.

There's it's impossible to be 100 percent Living

in a vacuum where you have nothing Play a part

in impacting what you're putting out creatively

creatively. I get that. All right So I don't

mind that star wars was a big thing. All right

It was a major pop culture entertainment Thing,

you know, you like like it inspired everything

that came after it in the science fiction fantasy

world Especially when it comes to space and that

type of thing. So we have a he -man series that

is now based Space so and we've already gotten

a lot of Star Wars reference, you know, especially

in She -Ra Yeah, we had we had a ton of Star

Wars tie -ins references, etc So now we take

a fantasy cartoon like this and we throw it in

space masters in space here So we're gonna get

more of it I get it because what are you gonna

do if you're doing something in space? You're

gonna go back to something like Star Trek Star

Wars that had that was a foundation a building

block I get all that But you have got to be better

than taking scenes and carbon copying them from

Star Wars and then putting them in your cartoon

or lines of dialogue or Using characters in the

same way and this episode does this to an offensive

degree. I don't know if Kevin O'Donnell just

really loves Star Wars and was like, hey, I'm

in charge of writing this this He -Man episode,

and I'm going to put my favorite Star Wars scenes

in here and my favorite bits in here. And that's

going to make it good somehow. You're wrong.

All it does is make you look like a hack. I don't

know what else Kevin O'Donnell's done. So maybe

he's done some great things that I'm just skipping

over. We'll do the research and come up with

some answers about that. But this episode pissed

me off. Alright number one you have our droids.

Yes, because Masters in space, you know, the

new adventures decided to have a bunch of droids

So we're already getting Star Wars connections,

but you can have droids Star Wars is not the

only property that gets to have droids I get

it. You can have droids and all kinds of other

stuff. So you already have the droids Now you're

gonna give me one of them. That's giving me that's

getting lines about what the probability is of

something succeeding Don't ever tell me the probability

of something Don't do that You can have droids,

but don't make them exact actually like c3po.

Yeah Like stop fucking doing that and then it's

not enough for that. They literally almost Down

to the character design or down to the design

of the actual sequence and scene lift the Cantina

scene and Put it in this fucking episode. Yeah,

they pretty much did there's exact replica of

the Cantina scene with an angry bar person, with

the band playing in the background. Literally

everything like someone needs to take this episode

take that sequence and do a side -by -side video

on YouTube or something with the Cantina scene

from Star Wars so you can see how much of a blatant

ripoff this is and you can literally circle this

sliced noodles band and then the band from this

episode the angry Bar person from this episode

and then the counterpart from Star Wars. It's

fucking ridiculous Yeah, like if you could see

my hands right now. I'm doing lots of hand gestures

I'm doing a lot of pointing. I'm very animated.

You can't see it because this is a podcast This

episode is offensive because it's not you could

do You can have droids you can do some of the

basic things that Star Wars does Why do you think

it's okay to lift an entire scene and place it

in your cartoon? Like you're a fucking hack Like

get an original you're supposed to be a writer

like that. You know how many people would kill?

to write for an animated series nowadays. I know

maybe in the past they just thought, oh, this

is stupid because I'd rather be writing for major

motion pictures. Or I'd rather be writing for

whatever the most popular prime time drama is

that's being played on TV. And I'm just doing

a cartoon. So I don't care. And it's just fun

little kid stuff. So I'm not going to take it

serious. That way of thinking pisses me off because

there is a lot of people around the world that

would give their left hand to be able to write

an episode of Star Wars Rebels or of the the

7D or of whatever other popular cartoons are

out there right now. Like people would die to

do that. Yeah. And you're just. Literally taking

this opportunity and doing nothing creative doing

nothing that required any type of brain power

or creativity That offends me. So Kevin O'Donnell

you're Yeah, I just can't I don't have another

word besides hack. Like maybe you did something

better, but this is bullshit what you put out

right here Yeah, it is very much bullshit. So

wow I mean, I don't know what else to say about

this episode that destroyed the episode for me

I don't care what it had and then literally it

has nothing to do with the plot of the episode

that I didn't talk about the Sun or the Ice Age

or He -Man or any of that because I was done

after that Like I didn't need to see any of the

rest of the episode because I was too pissed

off already So we'll take a break. We'll come

Mike, do you have any Havoc Staffs or any Power

Swords? Havoc Staff to the scientists if they

were here. This episode is so forgettable at

this point. I don't even know. Havoc Staff to

the writer, super air -quote writer, Kevin O'Donnell.

Cause yeah, wow. No. That's it. What about you?

Havoc staff for the person that was in charge

of what was supposed to be right in this episode.

Yeah. Rating? How about ratings? You go first.

I give it a .5. All right. I know I don't do

it, but zero. Zero. This episode gets a zero.

It's offensive. Stop it. And for the record,

we looked it up. The guy has done nothing. He's

done nothing with a writing career of any substance

whatsoever. So if the most you ever did was six

episodes on another garbage cartoon, get out

of here. Yeah, and I mean he has had two very

steady gigs You know in the last you know four

or five years as a unit production manager on

two Disney Channel series Casey undercover and

Mighty Med, but that's about it writing credits

very few and far between Maybe that's because

he wanted to get out of the writing game. Maybe

that's because someone told him a doofus You

can't write or I don't know Because this series

isn't like filmation This isn't you know, Lou

Shimer passing someone a script and say here

write this or passing someone an episode title

and saying here Come up with something for this.

No Not at all. So Alright, that's it for this

episode. We're gonna take a break and hopefully

episode 29 will be a little more positive on

Next up is episode 29, He -Kaz, somewhere around

September 1990 written by Stephen J. Fisher.

Kaz, longing to be as powerful as he meant, comes

across a space suit which gives him incredible

power. After performing a series of heroic feats

across Primus, it seems his wish has finally

come true. But it is not long before his new

powers lead him into the clutches of Skeletor.

Alright, put this in that group. This adds to

our article about episodes that you have to have

where a kid tries to be the superhero or the

main hero or the protagonist of the episode.

Yeah, and the only two things I can think of

is either Autobot Spike or Daniel Witwicky. in

the exosuit from Transformers the movie. Autobot

Spike is the one where they put Spike's brain

in this Frankenstein -like robot body in the

G1 series for those that don't know. Yeah, it's

a lot like that one. Yeah, it's a lot like that

one. Don't necessarily blame Kaz but I don't

I blame the scientists more because one of them

is like, oh, he's a growing boy He needs all

this he needs as much power as he can get. Yeah

Shut up. You're not his doctor Yeah, I mean it's

not as I mean it's not as common as maybe the

last episodes plot but it's still somewhat common

where the kid either feels like he's Not good

enough, you know because this guy has this power

or popular or something like that So it's not

as bad and I like the idea that he actually finds

this suit and whatnot So, I mean there's some

things that could make this plot work, but it's

slightly one of those standard at least for like

the action cartoons So we'll have to see see

how the execution goes Take a quick break. We'll

be back with some moments and hopefully more

positive and I promise no rants All right, Mike

any rants from you I'd said I wasn't gonna give

one maybe you got one What do you have for good

moments and bad moments of this episode? This

episode is just there like Like I said earlier,

you know It's just a copycat of Autobot spike

or Daniel Witwicky in the in the exo suit from

transformers the movie or whatever Kaz normally

hasn't been Quote -unquote that annoying kid

character. He's he's He's an annoying character,

but he's not as annoying and say like Scott Tracker

or Cousin Jeremy from Filmation or cousin Ed

Weiner from Filmation or Any of those people

he's fairly okay because most of the episodes

he's really not doing anything and I guess They

decided hey Let's do something with Kaz, and

let's do it really, really poorly. My notes for

Stake Mountain. He -Man Jr., really, oh my fucking

God. Yeah, I mean, He -Man Jr., He -Kaz, whatever

we're gonna call it. actually didn't mind how

they pulled that off with the angle this time

like it's not as annoying as it could have been

and I think one thing that helps that is that

the suit is a decent design so I like the actual

design of the suit it made it look something

out of mask as much you know as weird as that

is but I think that's good because I think one

thing that was very positive in mask was a lot

of the designs so I thought the suit was decent

which helped the he -man angle and I think the

other thing that helps is Kaz actually kicked

Skeletor's ass he did Like the kid actually got

the best of Skeletor at one point in this episode

So that's gotta work cuz usually it's just somebody

that's trying to do something that there's no

way they could possibly do But he had some good

moments, so I'll give him that What about Havoc

staffs or power swords for this one? Okay, yeah,

maybe Kaz, but I'm not gonna give him one cuz

no Okay, well I'm gonna have one that almost

cancels itself out because I'm gonna give Kaz

a Havoc staff And then I'm also gonna give him

a power sword I'm gonna give him a power sword

for actually being able to take out Skeletor

for a second But I'm gonna give him a Havoc staff

for being one of those kids that doesn't listen

to you You know the advice and and tries to do

something that they shouldn't be doing so So

Kaz gets cancellation Awards today. What about

your rating on this one? You were at a half on

the first episode. Are you higher than that on

this one? yeah i mean i enjoyed this episode

i wasn't falling asleep bored out of my gourd

like the last episode but it's still a bad episode

so two and a half all right um again only a half

of point away from you i was a half point lower

on the last episode half point higher on this

one i'm gonna give it a three i think it's just

just barely above average because of some of

the execution. So I'll give it a three, you're

at two and a half, a much better direction. Maybe

we'll continue to go in that direction or maybe

we'll fall back on our faces. We'll find out

after the break when we talk about episode 30

next. This won't even be worth watching. All

right, up next, episode 30, Slaves to the Machine,

October 1990, co -writing, co - Partners in writing

crime here Ted Peterson and Francis Moss he man

and skeletor arrive on the planet Machina machina

there the inhabitants of the planet are controlled

by machines He man joins a resistance organization

and fights for the independence of the people

But skeletor has other plans. What do you think

of slaves to the machine? Generic and you've

done before yeah It's been done better. You call

go -bots like the knockoffs of transformers.

These are like the knockoffs of the knockoffs

of go -bots. Yeah, these are... You could assemble

something better from the planet of junk. Yeah,

pretty much. I mean, come on. This is technology

takes over so You know machines are running the

day ruin, you know running everything and we

got to stop them another generic plot But again,

it's maybe unfair for me to like critique all

those because what else you're gonna do I get

it There's gonna be something so it almost always

comes down to execution but you got to be a little

bit of you know ahead of your game if you're

gonna make this into a good episode because but

again my whole problem with this series is we're

watching through it is That like everyone will

say oh it was the eight this isn't the eighties,

but you know when they talk about transformers

and he -man and thundercats Oh, but it was the

eighties. It was toy commercials this it was

this and this and this I'm like okay, so all

right. This was 1990 What did you have in 1990

you had timing tune adventures people dislike

that that's fine. Whatever you had that you had

You had Captain Planet, okay fine, whatever.

You had Turtles was still going strong. TMNT

was still going strong at that point. They were

three years into their run. And you're coming

off of, you know, Lou Shimer and company, you

know, in in 85 doing He -Man and or She -Ra and

any other action -based cartoon. This is 1990

and 1991. You had the Simpsons debut in 89, and

two of the Simpsons strongest seasons are the

1990 and 1991 season. There is plenty of writing

staff out there for a show like this. I'm sure

there were plenty of, let's say, college -age

kids that might have seen He -Man or She -Ra

or whatever, you know, five years. Before this

as they were graduating high school or something

or whatever You can have better writers. You

can have better stories. This didn't have to

be the shit show that it is No, um the and the

other thing about this is that I am getting I'm

just Bored of the fact that we're not getting

any character development whatsoever I know that's

a lot to ask for a cartoon like this or whatever

But again, this is the nineties this series is

supposed to be known for its writing and that's

why everybody gravitates to unity I look past

the character designs. It's a good writing its

continuity even though there has been very little

to no continuity so far But there is literally

we I know nothing about any of these characters

Do not know anything about these characters outside

of just some very brief bits. There's been nothing

to tell me anything about any of the actual Galactic

Guardians You know this this crew of people,

you know, we got the one sort of an origin episode

for one of them but really it was just the first

episode he appeared in it didn't really give

us a whole lot of the origin and and then the

main guys like by now we knew stuff about man

-at -arms we knew stuff about evil lin or beastman

or um even you know the the king and the queen

we knew more about and they're a side they're

not they're not a major character like they're

minor characters in that series we knew more

about them what do we know about any of these

people Yeah, I mean we know nothing half of the

stuff in these three episodes specifically today.

I remember slush head and Skeletor's Going back

and forth about some joke or something or or

slush head said something about ow my ear drums

and Skeletor was like you don't have ear drums

well if I did ow my ear it's like they went for

the comedy bit more so I I am NOT sorry for saying

this Super Mario Brothers Super shows Mario cartoons

had better writing than this series I don't understand

why anyone even the character development for

human a skeleton or was literally only in the

first Like the multi part first episode type

thing, you know where we get where they're coming

from how they ended up on this planet Which you

have to do because otherwise nobody knows what

the hell is going on here So you have that and

what else have we gotten since then has Skeletor?

I mean What are the plans like he's just gonna

play lackey to flog the whole time I Assume so

I don't know because I've never seen the actual

Is he just gonna just always be here he's never

gonna try to get back home he's never gonna try

to do anything else like Are we gonna get any

type of backstory as to how these guys became

Galactic Guardians? Are we gonna get any backstory

on any of the mutants? Or are they just gonna

randomly keep putting them as background characters

and they occasionally call their name? Like,

what is Optic? Who is that guy? You know, what

is any of these people's deal? And outside of

Hydran and Flipshot, who the hell are the other

Galactic Guardians? I've heard their names in

these three episodes today, but I couldn't tell

you. The only two I know are Hydran and Flipshot,

because those are the two that are always front

and center. Right, but then that's the problem,

because on both evil and the good side, everybody

outside of the first two to three characters

is literally only getting their name called.

Yep. And we hear them speak. but we have no idea

who they are, what their powers are, what their

backstory is, what their purpose is, nothing.

Like at least with some of these other guys in

the Filmation series, we knew, like, we knew

stuff. Like this guy is the tarantulas character

who is kind of bad, but he's really more about

himself. Like, at least we had personality traits.

It might not have been a big backstory, but we

knew, like, this person's a treacherous person

who will take the first opportunity to backstab

somebody. We don't know that about any of the

characters here. Yeah, absolutely. No, we don't.

And, I mean, hell, even... Even a character that

was an action figure first... in She -Ra probably

got better origin story than any of these kids

like Flutterina I only knew Flutterina like in

passing I never knew her origin and how she came

to be like on the show until we actually watched

that episode you know and that was done very

very well these guys they just get like you know

a queen wave or something or a homecoming whatever

the hell Princess Queen thing. I don't know,

it's just... This show is just exhausting. I

said last year in 2017 when I recorded Tooncast

Beyond Episode 78 with Dane Lamont from Punisher

Body Count, I said, I told him, I said, I spend

maybe an hour and a half trying to get through

an episode of New Adventures of He -Man worth

a 22 minute episode of Superman the Animated

Series. It just seems like it goes by like that

because it's so damn good because people knew

what the hell they were doing in 1996 versus

1990 and 1991 as far as writing and whatever

else and it's not unfair of me to compare He

-Man and Superman I mean we had we've had a whole

bunch of He -Man Superman comparisons and whatever

else things I think it was Mattel did a Toys

R Us exclusive a few years ago DC versus Motu

with He -Man and Superman action figure 2 -pack

and things like that it's like If I have to sit

here for longer than the episode is just to get

through a 22 -minute cartoon, there is something

wrong. Very, very wrong. Absolutely. All right,

we're going to take a quick break when we come

back. The good, the bad, the awards, the ratings,

all that coming up. All right, we're back for

Palace of Eternus moments, Snake Mountain moments,

anything that you got as far as good, the bad,

the ugly, anything. Let's go to snake Mountain

ha ha ha Hordak anybody. I mean seriously a theory

is calling they want their plot back Like seriously

did you did please tell me you saw this they

go to a planet where the machines control everybody

and There's a resistance. I mean the only thing

that's missing is the whispering woods in the

freight zone pretty much Absolutely, I agree

with you a hundred percent on that one anything

else All right. Um, yeah, I mean that's about

it. I mean, I guess the designs of the protectons

were okay if they weren't so generic, but they

looked like they had the potential. They were

just missing the finishing touches. But really

this episode just bored the piss out of me, so

I don't have anything. So any, you know, Havoc

staffs, power swords, anything like that to give

out? Nope. All right. What would you give this

episode? A one. Alright, we're fairly close on

all these episodes today. I'm a little bit higher

I guess even though I'm bored the piss out of

me. It didn't anger me like the first episode

so I give it a two So two for me one for you
