About this Episode
You are tuned in to Steve Megatron on Altered
Geek. Hello, and welcome to Altered Geek. I'm
your host, Steve Megatron Phillips. Join me as
us adventure into geekdom as TFG1 Mike. Hello.
Hello. So this week, we're going to talk about
quite a few different topics, among them being
the Batwoman exit. Uh huh. and how nostalgia
is awesome. And when you screw with nostalgia,
you know, with redesigning something or depending
on how it's brought across, can be a good thing
or a bad thing. Yes. So with that in mind, I
think we will jump right into The first bit of
nostalgia which is blockbuster Yes blockbuster.
The last one is actually succeeding What's funny
is I wrote an article about this last year when
I worked for a tech website and At that time
another blockbuster there was another one that
was open, but it was in the process of closing
Right and it's humorous because now people go
to this blockbuster and they have like specialized
shirts and it's like the last blockbuster on
earth and You know all these other, you know,
they still get new releases They still you know
have it and people go there specifically because
it's a tourist attraction now Which honestly
is humorous in of itself But despite the fact
that coronavirus is closed everything down. They're
still holding on strong and it's in Oregon yes
yes it is it's the only one left on the planet
and it's managed to somehow stay afloat during
the global pandemic it says none of the employees
have been laid off they continue to receive paychecks
through the closing and reopening which in of
itself is amazing considering it's the last one
so it technically should be closed my question
is who owns this last blockbuster And who's rich
enough right now to be paying those employees
checks? I'm not saying anything against the fact
that it's still open. I'm not trying to be negative
about it. I'm just asking a question like who
owns it and who's paying the bills because this
blockbuster back in the day was blockbuster.
I mean, it was everywhere and Now they virtually
well, they are not just virtually are extinct.
I mean, there's one left Because they They reopen
for curbside pickup and it says that uh Customers
called them to request and pay for a film and
showed up at the store to receive a sanitized
DVD in a ziplock bag Sweet, that's cool Yeah,
I'm happy for him. I'm just curious who's paying
the bills. That's all Yeah, I I don't know I
do think that it's funny because I think they
kind of stay afloat a little bit by having all
their little specialized touristy stuff now because
of the fact that it's It's a landmark attraction
And I know that it's it's got an older clientele
in that area and that's why it stays open I believe
from what I I wrote a year ago mm -hmm so But
it's it's still funny that they're still around
And that's that's one piece of nostalgia that
didn't age well because DVD stores are pretty
much extinct other than like family video or
that Yeah, which somehow family video still open
stores, which is beyond me how that happens But
they are cheaper so As far as nostalgia that
people don't want is when you redesign the characters.
Okay, no, I need to preface this. Yes, you are
correct. However, it's when you redesign the
characters badly. Well, and I say that because
in the last three to four years, we've gotten
a lot of bad designs for animated characters
that at one time were very sophisticated and
I get that they cost more to animate although
I can't see how much more it would cost to animate
something good as it would be something bad when
they try to put as much detail into it as far
as like the movement but as far as the detail
on it itself everything is going for that steven
universe looking thing uh yeah the cal arts style
is what it's called yeah who who came up with
that I don't know but that's what I've seen Neil
call it The one ugliest like I used to hate Wallace
and Gromit because it was like it was claymation
But I would take claymation over this crap like
this this Cal art style is by far the worst thing
I've ever seen because along with it comes terrible
writing So what he's talking about folks is they
have taken it upon themselves to this is, I believe,
is it Kellogg's? I want to get this right. It
is Kellogg's, right? Yeah. Well, they did that
with Rice Krispies a few years ago, too. Yeah.
So I just wanted to make sure it wasn't like
General Mills. I wasn't confusing the companies.
So Kellogg's has taken it upon themselves to
decide that a redesign for Toucan Sam is needed.
As a child of the 80s, no, it is not. But OK,
whatever. I get it. You have to appeal to kids
of this generation. It's just It's awful It's
like they show them side by side in toucan. Yeah
of the 90s looks infinitely better Yeah, and
this thing looks like My son drew it I'm sure
you do a better job. Yeah. Well, I could draw
better. I could probably draw the real toucan
Then they put like in they didn't even have like
the stripes of color. It's a gradient Yeah, and
his beak like it's literally a gradient And they're
like And I'm not trying to knock artists But
come on like it's just the artists that they're
going to now like they're going to those Tumblr
artists who get famous for one thing or maybe
not or whatever Well, it's like they had this
guy that was like, oh IGW should hire me to draw
transformers or whatever his art was the same
crap It was the same stuff and and I was like
I got into a Yeah, we did we yeah, I got into
a more of an argument with them than you did
I says they're never gonna hire you Yeah, like
they're going for sophisticated art. This is
not it Like I'm like kudos to you, but it's your
art is not up to par like animated was better
Yeah, so my wife said to me when I showed her
this she's like oh It looks like that's his girlfriend
or his wife Comparing the two designs side -by
-side The original toucan male the new toucan
female looks like his girlfriend or his wife
And I don't disagree with Karen because she's
right it it doesn't look like Classic toucan
He has style. He has movement and he has he has
Yeah, he has texture. Don't get me wrong. I like
some gradient stuff you do a lot of really great
gradient stuff with art that you've done for
us over the years and everything else, but nothing
in this instance nothing beats texture and realism
and the new toucan just looks like Like you said,
I would rather have claymation because this looks
like a One of those birds you hit with a gun
at a Circus or something or a carnival like one
of the ducks on the thing that you win a prize
for that's what this looks like to me Well, it's
funny because this article says that Froot Loops
took it to social media to announce a rebrand
of their mascot And the wording on this is hilarious.
It says let's just say that things Aren't going
as planned. The internet hates it. Almost every
comment on the announcement post makes either
makes fun of the new design or begs the brand
to bring back the old Toucan Sam we all knew
and loved. Instead of a slightly, you know, creating
a slightly different version of the classic mascot
He's taken out a completely different appearance
with a 2d design trippy color Combinations and
oversized eye and a mouth that doesn't quite
fit right as one comment put it Who designed
this a 12 year old who just learned about the
rainbow gradient and smudge tool? No, I hate
it You know and it's it's funny because Along
with the redesign free loops announced for loops
world The new TV spot below, you know, and they
shown this article features a cereal box with
the former rendition of Toucan Sam You know this
this particular version of it it says You know,
what are they gonna do next repackage the the
box and you know It it says, you know paramount
faced a similar issue a few months ago with the
the movie trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog You
know the trailer would cause near -universal
criticism and Felt that you know the internet
felt that Paramount completely ruined the design
and then the people that were like oh Just let
them design what they're gonna design. Well.
It was just it was terrible and Thankfully redesigned
it and when the movie came out the movie actually
was really good But I feel like that people would
have overlooked it if that design didn't get
swapped back with the iconic one that everybody
knows Yeah, so they're you know It the font and
everything. It's it's the Steven Universe cowlart
style and they did this with They did this with
the Thundercats Roar they've done this with She
-Ra Yeah, and and honestly like this non detailed
non textured Stuff is just Let's put it this
way like my kids every now and again will watch
something animated They go to the CGI stuff this
stuff. They would just like meh There's there's
no ambition to watch it like they would sooner
watch Something that I had watched in the 90s
because it at least had some kind of a detail
to it. Yeah. Exactly. I don't know. You know,
here's hoping it helps sell more boxes of cereal,
but I am about a box of Froot Loops and and I
know I'm not the target. I get it. They're trying
to target little kids and whatever else, because
let's face it. When I first started remembering
to see Froot Loops commercial was when I was
like five or six years old, which was 85, 86.
I mean, you weren't even born yet, but it's one
of those things where, you know, I didn't really
remember it. I didn't really catch onto it until
I was five or six years old. And once I did,
I latched onto it and I've loved it for life.
I don't know what five or six or seven year olds
are going to think of this now. Just showing
them this, not showing them the comparison between,
oh, this is the old design and here's the new
design. Just take a six, seven, eight year old,
put them in front of a TV, show them whatever
commercial with this new design and see what
they say about it. Because I would be curious
to hear what the heck a kid would think about
this. Whether they liked it or not on its own.
I had no idea. Yeah. No clue. Though something
else it's a little bit controversial and and
I'll let you get into that Is that woman and
yes why the star left and I'll read it from the
article on variety and in kind of preface it
but The actress more or less left the CW show
yeah into everyone else it's kind of a surprise
that she will not be portraying the character
in season two and It basically stemmed from an
ill fit between star and production according
to multiple sources Rose was unhappy with the
long hours required of her as the series lead
which led to friction on the set It was thus
decided by her in the network and studio Warner
Brothers television that they would part ways
Her rep the reps for all included declined to
comment Of course they did Yeah, and so it says
her time on batman marked the first TV starring
role of her career She previously appeared on
orange is the new black and other films But it's
funny because the speculation has been all over
the place as to the reason for her exit And it's
been speculated that it had something to do with
pain associated with an emergency surgery. She
underwent For two herniated discs, but which
was last year. Yeah, it was not current. Yeah,
but they're saying another source of the situation
says it had nothing to do with her health or
injury. And. You know, mention that she's had
mental health issues, there's been other issues.
So it's been renewed for a second season, so
they're going to recast. They'll recast, but
I'm wondering if they'll recast the character
or if they'll create a whole new character to
replace her. Like bring in another Batwoman or
Batgirl to replace the Batwoman character. I
think they will use... I mean, that's possible,
but I think that they will probably... Okay,
so this was Kate Kane, the only other... You
know, Cassandra Kane was Batgirl, so that can't
happen. I don't know. I don't know what they're
gonna do. All is I know is the internet is going
crazy over this and My takeaway so it's funny
that this happened now Because this was announced
what today, right? Yeah, this is when Well this
this article there was another article that was
like two ago. Yeah. Okay, so right around Wednesday,
May 20th 2020 This is when this news happened.
One year ago, I had taken a screenshot and posted
it on Facebook of when the Batwoman first look
trailer from the CW YouTube channel was posted.
And the reason why I shared this screenshot of
it is I have it at the end of the video. It has
the Batwoman title, but I'm showing the YouTube
part of it where it's like, oh, this is from
the CW network. You're subscribed. It shows the
likes and the dislikes. That video has 60k, I
don't know what it has now, but at the time of
the picture a year ago, 60 ,000 likes, 226 ,000
dislikes. My comment last year, come on people,
the CW Batwoman series is gonna be cool. 226
,000 in dislikes, really? So this came up in
my memories on Facebook. So reacting to the news,
here's my reaction to this news. People have
been hating on the CW's Batwoman series since
day one. My only gripe with the first season
was that the Alice storyline should not have
been the whole season. Have it be five or six
episodes, give it a break, have her come back
at the end of the season or something. And I
know the season was kind of hindered by the COVID
-19 thing, but we're not going to go into that.
And my other rest of my thoughts is I think Ruby
Rose was a nice unknown entity that could have
grown into the role just as Christopher Reeve
did with Superman. In all caps, I write, and
before you all get your ants twisted in your
panties, I'm not comparing Rose to the greatness
of Reeve. I'm saying that they were both unknown
actors when they got chosen for the roles that
they played. As actors, they had to not only
embody the character, but they had to fill that
character's shoes and be comfortable doing it.
You're telling me that part of her reason of
leaving is that the hours are too long? She's
fresh. She's like the only other thing I've ever
seen her in is she was the deaf assassin in John
Wick 2 So a multi -million dollar movie Was kind
of her big make -me -famous thing which she had
a role where she said nothing in You know, well,
she's a series regular on oranges the new black
Yeah, that's a Netflix show that's not a multi
-million dollar movie franchise a lot of people
watched it. I know I'm just saying my point though
is that she's even more of a fresh -faced unknown
actor than Reeve was at least Reeve You know
came from I don't know where her background is
whatever where she went to school But Reeve came
from Juilliard Reeve came from you know plays
and all of that and everything else so this day
and age young actors It's all about that instant
gratification and not wanting to put some of
the work in and it kind of sucks Because like
I said, they're either gonna recast or they're
gonna do something else Who knows? I know they
are gonna recast but who knows how they're gonna
do it They've basically introduced what blue
persuade looks like in this universe to know
yeah I and because they have Tommy Elliot hush
Looking like him, but But no, I mean like I I
mean it kind of sucks when you have like a main
show like that And she does play it pretty strongly,
but at the same time I don't yeah, I think that
the show could have been better Yeah, I actually
feel that about all of the CW shows this year
Feel like there was a lot of letdowns with a
lot of the programming this year Especially surrounding
crisis Like before and after like I haven't really
cared for the flashes storyline all season I
kind of got into it, but I don't know I gotta
watch again Batwoman and Supergirl I actually
quit watching like I had zero interest after
crisis because it just kind of was going all
over the place and Yeah, I watched it for the
first couple episodes after and then I was just
like I Don't care anymore. And so I just stopped
watching and I'm still with legends because it's
just all over the place anyway Although I'm finding
that that's a little lacking to this season.
Yeah, but I'll probably complete the flash and
legends even though legends was one I was gonna
drop a lot earlier And it's somehow still made
it to the second level Legends is still going
they're still airing episodes. They have a couple
more left. I think flash just ended and it was
It wasn't bad, but I'm not really caring for
the whole buried has to be on a timer for his
powers they have to create this new artificial
speed force and Don't know but I did find it
interesting where they're using the mirror verse
thing and it's not actually mirror master I thought
that was kind of cool, but I Don't know. I don't
want to you know say too much and spoil it for
you because you haven't seen it even though most
the time I know you don't care about spoilers,
but I do want you to at least go into it cold
and You know, whatever Um, yeah, I don't know
man. I'm just like after crisis. I'm like, okay.
Well, that's the arrow verse. What's next? I
know I was kind of done with it. Like I know
that they're gonna air a Superman show they're
gonna air I figured with the other they were
gonna do arrow in the green arrow in the canaries,
but I don't feel like that's gonna take off Just
based on the fact that we haven't heard anything
Yeah Don't know I'm probably done as far as like
the CW shows are concerned unless they bring
in a Batman show Like that's the only way I'm
gonna stay tuned in I think to anything new Yeah,
and like I've mentioned the last couple of weeks
I'm not a person that can just constantly be
On point and keep up with this all this TV stuff
Week to week so I would much rather wait until
it hits Netflix or whatever And just marathon
it at some point that way. I'm already paying
for the service I get no commercials, and I don't
have to worry about it anymore And I can watch
it on my time versus somebody else's time So
yep, so yeah that That's kind of the interesting
thing as far as like the CW stuff anyway Now
there is one instance where nostalgia can be
done, right and That is the Star Trek Captain
Pike series Mm -hmm granted. We haven't seen
anything of it concrete for the new series. However,
we've gotten tastes of it already through discovery
season 2 through the short tracks and They've
CBS All Access has ordered Star Trek strange
new worlds with Captain Pike number one and Spock
and It's still I want to say seven years before
Kirk takes command of the Enterprise Meaning
either on the Farragut or another ship more than
likely is on the Farragut As a lieutenant at
this point the same as Spock and So the the interesting
thing is is they're saying that we could possibly
see a more downgraded enterprise than what we
saw in discovery because of the fact that It
had her number of refits before Kurt got it And
a lot of the stuff still looks like hyper futuristic
compared to the original series and what they're
saying is during the It's another one of those
cannon retcon type things They're saying that
Like in the even in the series they had holographic
projectors Mm -hmm, which was never seen in any
other Star Trek besides They installed it on
the defiant in deep space nine and it was on
the enterprise II Nemesis, but that's like a
hundred years in the future compared to here
Yeah, explain with that is They had this artificial
intelligence called control which section 31
ran and it became Alive essentially and Pike
didn't trust or didn't like the the holographic
projectors. He liked the screen aspect and so
he ordered it out of the enterprise and Taken
out and and at some point he becomes fleet captain
and so I'm assuming that when that happens He
will order that the entire fleet does away with
a lot of these extra add -ons and the enterprise
also had some boosts in discovery because of
The war that was going on at the time and so
I think that they'll downsize and anyways the
the nice part about this series is Anson Mount
who plays Captain Pike brings a nice kind of
mix between Kirk and Picard Mm -hmm, which is
refreshing and honestly, he's the only reason
I stuck with Discovery season 2 And Rebecca Romaine
who plays number one Does a really good job at
filling the role that Majel Barrett had although
granted they can kind of create him from scratch
in a sense because they only had one episode
that pike and Number one were even featured in
right Somebody mentioned that What's his name
that plays ratchet? in transformers prime jeffrey
combs jeffrey combs he played uh he played uh
andorian named shran on enterprise and he played
um one of the uh orda uh and uh a farangian deep
space nine but somebody suggested he should play
the doctor around this new show because he looks
almost like the actor that played the original
doctor and He's like, well I would he says I
feel like it's past my prime to do this, you
know and Meaning that nobody's approached him
but there was like a fan that posted and I saw
when it was fresh before it went viral right
and So he's gotten picked up all over the place
and I said So what would you do about the other
two cast members that that were shown because
they have a like a Navigator and then they have
like a yeoman that were in the cage as well that
had names And he's like, I don't know. But because
I was just poking the bear to see if I could
stir some more stuff up. But so, yeah, it was
pretty cool to see that come across the news
feed last week with the strange new worlds. And
the nice thing about it is they're planning on
it's going to be, again, a USS Enterprise centered
series, which this will be the first time since
Enterprise. Or TNG honestly that have covered
the enterprise So it'll be nice to see this kind
of come back up the other nice part again is
that They're gonna be episodic Mm -hmm. They're
not gonna be serialized So you won't necessarily
have to watch every episode every episode. Yeah
So if something doesn't appeal to you, it won't
affect you ultimately. Yes, the characters evolve
gradually anyway throughout the series like any
other, you know, even TNG did that. But you won't
have to feel inclined to watch all of it. And
then they're they're trying to bring a whole
new perspective to it and have. Not only more
stories be told but have it more uplifting and
less dark and more fun and more You know more
in vain of what TNG and TOS had Yeah, so TOS
so that it's more fun and exploratory, but it's
less Down to the dumps like discovery and Picard
have been So I either way I'm really looking
forward to it. I'm glad that these actors get
to come back. So that's that's my piece on it
Very cool, very cool. Yeah, I don't know just
not I Find that my television watching whether
it's streaming or whatever it's more Need to
keep up with whatever I'm keeping up with but
I don't want to have to keep up with it on somebody
else's schedule kind of thing Yeah, I mean they
they trickle it out to There they're going to
trickle it out on CBSL access weekly just like
they do discovery Picard all that But Yeah, I'm
looking forward to it. It's one of the few series
like pretty much anything Star Trek as long as
it's like I honestly don't care about the section
31 thing that they've been talking about for
two years I don't care about lower decks, which
is like a Rick and Morty Star Trek And they're
gonna have like a Nickelodeon kids cartoon as
well. I don't care about that either, but But
this I'll pick up. I'll definitely watch this
and I hope that they don't do it wrong considering
it's the same creative team behind Discovery
and Picard. Right. So. Speaking of other television.
Yes, other television. So my buddy Jesse Raz,
who has been on the pullback a couple of times
and he's done the Hot Car episodes of GCR that
we've done with Hot Car Awareness and yadda yadda
yadda. He's a... local DJ back in Louisville,
Kentucky, um, posted something from what I love
now is like, you know how we have the, like last
year it was all about, Oh, post this, this, and
this, or let's do these quizzes things. Well,
now it's all these things of, Oh, post your,
your 10 favorite albums that Influenced you or
something or post 10 favorite TV show or whatever
the hell it is so and what I also love is that
these screencaps from Twitter I see them more
so on Facebook about what? Our leadership in
this country is doing than anything else, but
this one from my buddy Jesse Raz says I read
somewhere that people with anxiety love rewatching
old TV shows and movies that they have seen millions
of times, because there is no ounce of anxiety
in wondering what the end result is. Now I know
why I prefer to rewatch them than start something
new. As I just mentioned a few moments ago, I
hate having to keep up with something as it's
happening. If it's on Netflix and all of it's
on Netflix, or if it's on Hulu and all of it's
on Hulu, I will watch it at my own pace kind
of thing. And I feel that in my bones. Like I
just can't. I would rather watch shows that I've
watched a million times already. And I've done
that. I've even mentioned that the last three
episodes of this podcast, I've mentioned numbers,
I've mentioned Dharma and Greg, I've mentioned
whatever. It's funny. I actually wanted to make
sure I did this tonight. Over the last, I think,
three weeks, I have been rewatching the Blacklist
from the beginning. Oh, wow. You're ambitious.
I've just now started. I just finished season
four tonight and I as of this recording and I
just started. I haven't even really gotten into
season five, episode one, but I just finished
season four and I'm like, oh, Mr. Kaplan, damn
it. Now, have you watched it before? I yeah,
I was watching it when I when it was. Fred when
it first started I watched the first two seasons
and I think I watched Out of the 22 or 23 episodes
of season 3 I think I watched maybe 10 or 11
of them like I think I watched like the first
nine and then I dropped off and I picked it back
up and Then I had seen like the first four episodes
of season 4 so I hadn't seen anything past episode
4 of season 4 So it was interesting to find out
everything that happens after episode four of
season four. And I have not seen any of season
five, six or the seventh season that just ended.
So five, six and seven are all fresh for me.
And I love the show. It's just like I said, I
couldn't keep up with it. So but I've been marathoning
that I did that other things. I did that recently
as well with the blacklist. So I can be caught
up to where they would be for this current season,
although I haven't watched the comic based episodes
yet. The one where they kind of go regular episode
and then comic based. I am looking forward to
catching that, though. So. I specifically set
it for my DVR so I could see it eventually, but
it is what it is. I'm sure the seventh season
will show up on Netflix at some point here soon,
now that it's over. I don't know when. I don't
think it's on there yet. Actually, I'm pretty
sure it's not. But what are your thoughts about,
you know, going back to, and I know generally
what your thoughts are on it, but for the people
that don't know, Going back versus starting something
new I find nostalgia is easier Just because the
entry point is not as jarring Like even introduced
to the franchise before or whatever it may be
or the show you generally know what episodes
you can skip Yep, if you've seen it and you know,
which ones are feel good You know which ones
you you know, if you you have a certain disposition
at a certain time, you know, which one is going
to hit that that particular feeling that you're
looking for But also like I Occasionally when
I've just burnt out and I don't want to do anything
I'll watch like I'll blitz through a bunch of
old Star Trek even though I've seen them all
before at some point I'll watch some that I really
enjoy sometimes like and just purposely skip
ones that I've not seen before Which is very
few at this point But because my goal is I go
through Netflix and then I look for any and now
at this point that don't have a You know the
the bar that shows that they've been played Mm
-hmm But no, I mean I go through for the most
part and I'll watch those and if I feel like
every now and again I'll watch a movie that I've
haven't watched in some time, but For the most
part like I'll what I want to go to show that's
easy that I Don't necessarily have to worry about
Or I can have it as background noise. I always
turn on Star Trek It may be one of the the main
four old ones, but it's always a track Yeah Yeah
for me It depends on what I'm trying to do. If
I'm trying to rely and this is, and I know I've
talked about this before, but again, folks, I
repeat myself a lot. It depends on what I'm trying
to do. If I'm trying to relax and watch something
and pay attention to it, I have to either be
sitting at my computer, which I currently don't
have cause it's in storage. That's whatever,
or I'll be, you know, or Karen and I will be
laying in bed or something or sitting up or whatever
we're doing. And we'll watch it and we'll pay
attention to it. If I'm by myself and she's either
sleeping or working or whatever, because she
has she's doing some part time stuff from home,
you know, like my watch through the blacklist,
I cannot lay on my side and watch it because
I know as soon as I lay on my side, I will fall
asleep. So if I want to pay attention to it and
figure it out and whatever, I have to be laying
on my stomach. you know my face in my phone watching
it and I don't mind watching on my phone I actually
prefer it half the time because I'm so used to
it at this point uh I still like watching on
you know on the computer or on television and
things like that but the only new thing is two
new things and I know I've mentioned these before
I want Karen and I to eventually check out You
on Netflix, which is with Penn Badgley and a
bunch of other people. But Penn Badgley was the
gossip guy, or I should say the gossip girl,
back in the day. So that's a series on Netflix
that I want to check out at some point. And because
it's a series on Netflix that has all the episodes,
as I already mentioned, I can watch it whenever
I want. The other one that just started, it actually
just... Uploaded all its episodes is the Amazon
Prime original series called upload This is we've
watched five out of the ten episodes currently
and it is just hilarious instead of actually
going to You know regular dying like going into
a coffin or being cremated or whatever you go
to upload They basically upload your consciousness
into this digital heaven Sadly, there is a bit
of violence in it because after your consciousness
or your being is uploaded, they basically decapitate
you. So there is a little bit of gore and guts
and whatever, but it's a good series, though.
It really, really is. It's a very interesting
series. It's only 10 episodes. So it isn't like
that's the thing comparing something that's like
on Netflix or Amazon Prime, that's 10 episodes
or 13 episodes. to the four seasons of 21, 22,
or 23 episodes that I've seen of the Blacklist
in the last three weeks, I can easily watch a
Netflix or Amazon Prime or Hulu or whatever series
more than I can watch a regular 22 episodes season
of whatever show it is. Yeah, I can see that.
Yeah, but it's... It's actually pretty interesting.
Yeah, I find nostalgic and I kind of agree with
the statement of, you know, things are, you know,
you don't have the anxiety that comes along with
watching a show because you already know the
outcome. Which, again, I totally agree. So, yeah,
I mean, it's not that jarring or anything, and
there's not that much investment really. So,
even as far as that is concerned, you pretty
much know what you're gonna be able to, you know,
what you're gonna get. Absolutely. For those
that may be interested and have Amazon Prime
and want to check out upload, here's the description
from Amazon Prime. Emmy -winning Greg Daniels
from The Office, Parks and Rec comes a hilarious
new sci -fi comedy. In the future, people can
upload their consciousness to a luxurious digital
afterlife. When a party boy Nathan gets uploaded
into a virtual resort, he meets the down -to
-earth Nora, who starts as his customer service,
quote -unquote, Angel, but becomes so much more
as she helps him find friendship, love, and purpose.
Okay, so first of all for us Probably for you
more than for me. I forgot but this the guy that
stars is Nathan Robbie Amell Okay, so it's Ronnie
from you know flash and whatever arrow and all
that It's interesting It's a fun. It's a fun
little series that has ten episodes you don't
have to do too much with it and There are moments
that will shock you and there are moments that
will just have you laughing on the floor like
a hyena Yeah, I I wouldn't be opposed to that
so Yep But yeah, so what are what are some nostalgia
shows that you kind of go to that are kind of?
more or less comfort food. Oh, boy. It's gonna
be a long podcast, folks. He just asked me that
question, and I have like 200 shows on my list,
but I'll try to keep it short. Just shows for
me that I love. Night Rider, Airwolf 18, my three
80s action shows that I absolutely love. Nash
Bridges from the 90s. Dharma and Greg whenever
I need to laugh I watch Dharma and Greg because
that show is absolutely hilarious Jenna Elfman
and Thomas Gibson absolutely kill it I've seen
numbers. I don't know how many times and I'm
not a math guy at all and watching watching Bernard
from yep watching watching David Krumholz from
Santa Claus watching him be a math professor
and explaining math in a real -world perspective
just Absolutely love that I know that he's kind
of humorous and his stuff there. Mm -hmm And
that also has Judd Judd Judd Hirsch in it from
Taxi and from Independence Day. Independence
Day, he played the father to James, not James,
Jeff Goldblum's character. Law and Order, Criminal
Intent, I can watch over and over and over again.
What I find is some of these like Law and Order,
Criminal Intent and some of these other, and
that's not a true crime show, but like true crime
stuff like I mentioned before on ID. Apparently,
it helps me sleep or it helps me at least get
sleep. And I know I've talked about this before,
but Karen and I have seen every single episode
of Forensic Files. So I can put Forensic Files
on my phone in the background and just let it
play. And Peter Thomas, the narrator, will just
lull me to sleep with his dussel tones. So, you
know, that's a thing. Yeah, I mean, there's just
so much TV from the past that I absolutely love.
I know I mentioned a couple weeks ago I had watched
through Beast Machines again. I watched through
select episodes of Transformers Generation 1.
I needed to do both of those again. Yeah. Just
because it's been a while. But I do... Like I
said, Star Trek is pretty much my go -to, but
I do occasionally try new shows. Not very often,
but... Unless it's something that instantly appeals
to me, and this is what I've been saying for
years and people say, oh, you shouldn't judge
it, Pike. And I know I've said this on this show
and other shows on GCRN. The whole point of a
trailer, whether it's for film, a television
show, whatever, specifically film and TV. The
whole point of it is to either get you to want
to see it or get you to I can wait or I'm not
that's not for me kind of thing. I heard people
talking about you on Netflix and I watched I
think maybe the first five or 10 minutes of the
first episode and I'm like, oh, this is really
interesting. I should point this out to my wife
to see if she would like it and We haven't started
watching the rest of it yet But you know, it's
one of those things where if somebody points
it out to me, I'll check it out Or if somebody
said that's kind of like how how I found upload
a buddy of mine on Facebook posted about it And
I'm like, oh hmm, that sounds interesting. I'll
check it out You know, but if it's too much if
it's over saturation of of of media or of advertising
for it it's like no I'll wait I'll wait until
this train has has has left the station and come
back again and check it out later when no one
else is paying attention to it in other words
you don't jump on the hype train not a lot of
times I don't unless it's a property you're already
enjoying and then you're like I'll hop on this
right or unless it's a concept that I think could
be cool So yeah Yeah Yeah, that reminds me I
need to revisit Beast Machines It's been a while
since I've watched that Yeah, that's that's pretty
much the entire episode this week So if you guys
have some nostalgia shows that you really enjoy
and would like to let us know what they are Or
shows that just You've seen him a million times.
There's no anxiety with it. You don't have to
worry about it. It's just kind of like a guilty
pleasure show Let us know you can email us feedback
at geek cast radio comm you can let me know on
the Twitter sphere at SCP 21 and of course on
the Facebook page That's right and speaking of
geek cast radio We're getting close to that 11
year mark, aren't we? Yes, yes, we are Some some
new things are being planned out Won't be rolled
out all at once, but they're in the works There's
a lot of things that are realistic Gonna kind
of go back to our core a little bit I don't even
remember us having a core, but no, I know I know
what you're saying. Yeah But but yeah, we're
gonna make things a little bit easier as far
as the websites concerned and As far as features
and all these other ideas that we have floating
about some new graphics some new design elements
that you'll rather enjoy once we reveal them,
so Yep, my categories Yes your categories, so
I posted this May 17th At that time we were I
think two weeks away from the 11 year anniversary,
which is June 1st 2020 That is the geek cast
radio networks 11 year anniversary and all that
time which podcast of ours have you listened
to and which do you still listen to our goal
has always been to in all caps entertain you
and Have in all caps fun while doing it We here
at the GCR and always want to unleash the geek
in you and give you the best podcasts we can.
Thank you to all the listeners, fans, friends,
and all you other people. Thank you to all the
geeks and geek cats that have recorded podcasts
with us. Thank you to everyone who has allowed
us to interview them. We have some feedback from
this, not a lot, but some on that post that I
wrote. A super fan and good friend, Mike Carvalho.
Hope I'm pronouncing his name, right? It's Mike
you can send hate mail to tfg1 Mike at gmail
.com Yep, or you know you can send money to that
address too anyway work Yep, do you have you
and Mike at gmail .com for PayPal and any other
transactions you'd like to send anyway? Radio
calm that's right also longtime supporter super
fan Brad Mull He goes on and says, thank you
for 11 years of great content. The library has
decreased a bit on my iPod mainly because of
a lot of the recap shows are over with. But The
Beast Unleashed will always be my fave and I
relisten to some episodes from time to time.
A lot comes down to personal preference. Since
cutting the cable, I don't watch wrestling anymore
and I've noticed most of the GCRN episodes are
wrestler related or comic related, so I don't
listen to much there. My number one weekly listen
now is obviously Altered Geek and Future Imperfect
when apps are released. And a whole thread. Came
of this and I replied to Brad said you should
read comics. There's something there for everyone
and then listen to the pull bag Our good buddy
exactly our good buddy Jeremy Fane says it's
always legends of the dark knight pull bag and
tune cast for me Michael Wilson has to rear his
ugly head People still listen to beast unleashed
I'm like It's the ultimate Beast Wars Beast Machines
podcast. Well, it's not every day you get a lot
of voice actors, a lot of creators, and you get
a dude that can imitate Megatron and Waspinator
in the same show. Yep. And then our good friend,
longtime co -host only did a few things with
this terrace from Canada says, glad to have been
a part of it and gave me so much insight and
experience. Hope to come back one day and record
again. Anyone that has already recorded with
us that You know, we still are in contact with
anyone is available as long as you're available
or we're available Anyone can always come back.
I mean, it's Luke Skywalker said no one's ever
really gone. I Know bad. Well, that's kind of
heartbreaking considering Our good friend optimus
skirt you started toy cast with me he did pass
away but yeah He could be with you in spirit.
Exactly. As long as he doesn't haunt the toys
you play with. I don't know what Gary would think
of Funko Pops. I honestly don't know because
they weren't really a thing when we were recording
the show. Like they were around, I think, obviously,
because Funko's been around for like 20 years.
But I was not. I was on my Mighty Mugs kick back
then because Mighty Mugs were super popular.
Um, and I think funko was doing like wacky wobblers
I don't I don't think the pops had taken off
yet back in 20 2009 2010 2011 Um, but anyway,
I I just you know Anyone that we have recorded
with in the past that we still continue to record
with or reach out to Is always more than welcome
to come back to the show. Anytime anyone has
anything to say michael powers As long as we
all have time for it, we would love to have you
back on the show. Yep Cuz we all know I suck
at this podcasting thing and we need better hosts
You mean insights insight No, I'm out of sight
see ya Yeah, poof I got snapped away I was the
one percent that got snapped away when when that
idiot snapped his fingers Oh, we all know that
that doesn't happen. Besides, did you see what
I posted to Jeremy? Oh, where was this? On his
Facebook. So he made he made this was this was
kind of funny because he made a comment about
This is my two thoughts on the HBO Max Justice
League Snyder cut. It's one It's an excuse to
get HBO Max and add another subscription service
to your debt to you I don't know how and why
not a bad thing Disney Marvel got to build a
Marvel cinematic universe, but He says but they
did it the bastards did it. Yeah, and Disney
Marvel got lucky WB is just throwing character
ideas to a wall and here we go it took individual
films, sequels, and major plot to bring the Avengers
together and go up against Thanos. Darkseid is
no Thanos, and the Anti -Life Equation is no
Infinity Gauntlet. Just let it die. Ben moved
on. Shazam is not teaming up with the League.
Wonder Woman is adequate, but nothing great.
Same as Aquaman. Watch them once and once only,
and I'm kind of super -heroed out. Thoughts.
And one of his... Friends on there goes on the
dark side topic He is in fit infinitely more
dangerous than Thanos need proof read final crisis
anything that occurs there is just because he
showed up not because he had to do collect some
rocks to make him powerful and and it was kind
of humorous and then Somebody says Thanos is
weaker because he's always trying to impress
the female personification of death dark side
loves no one Yeah. Then you post the image of...
And then I post these memes, because I collect
anything with Star Trek related. And honestly,
I collect memes anyway. But it shows Thanos with
the Infinity Gauntlet and all the stones. This
is, once I've gotten the Infinity Gauntlet and
collected all six Infinity Stones, I'll finally
be able to shape reality with just a snap of
my fingers. And then below it, it's a picture
of Q. Lower life forms are so amusing. And then
he snaps his finger. And then there was another
one because I've got there's like six of them
with Q There's one with Thanos on the bridge
of the Enterprise and says Your federation is
spread through the galaxy like a cancer consuming
all in its path Your replicators produce so much
for your own kind while you allow entire planets
within your reach to starve and die because of
your cruel prime directive. I am here to end
your plague and begin galactic healing. I will
eradicate your entire federation with simply
a snap of my... And then you see the queue flash
like he's gone. And it says in the queue sitting
there next to Wesley, I'm sorry, but I just couldn't
let him babble on anymore. Not everyone needs
19 movies and a pretty glove to learn the Donald
old parlor trick. It snaps his finger, you know?
Yes. I find those amusing. Yeah, absolutely.
The first commenter, Edward Hale, is a longtime
friend of Jeremy's now, Edward and his wife Kendra.
I actually just became friends with them on Facebook
because I have all these new connections that
I want to record with and bring on to the network
as co -hosts and whatever, just guest spots and
whatever. So I'm trying to be more... Social
on social media But more social yes anti -social
anti -social anti So yeah Quick before we get
out of here and this will probably be the last
thing because I'd really in six days I really
don't think they're gonna hit 500 grand I will
give one final update for Legend of the White
Dragon Kickstarter. They hit the $300 ,000 mark,
which means a comic book prequel series will
be made. So that's going to be cool. I think
that's it. I think that's all I got. That's all
I've got for this episode anyways. Yep. So let
us know, folks. Shoot us an email. Send us messages
on Twitter. He's at SCP 21. I'm at TF2 and Mike
You can also tweet at altered geek or at geek
