About this Episode

We discuss the online reactions to leaked Captain Marvel set photos and why judging early, out-of-context production material rarely reflects the finished film. We cover how superhero costumes, CGI, and aesthetic choices often shift from set to screen, noting that final projects frequently silence early criticism. We also explore the tendency for fans to rely on comic book accuracy as a standard for live-action adaptations, questioning if that expectation is realistic for modern blockbuster filmmaking.

You are tuned in to Steve Megatron on Altered

Geek. Hello and welcome to another episode of

Altered Geek Off the Cuff. I am your host for

this episode, Michael Boothinja -Powers. I am

joined by your always host, Steve Megatron Phillips.

How you doing, Steve? Good. So by the time this

story goes - up. It may be a little late to the

party, but we're going to kind of wrap it all

into something discussion worthy here. Marvel

just, actually was it a leak or was it an official

shot? I think it was a leak. I don't think it

was an official shot. Okay, so the first, beating

around the bush here, the first photo of Brie

Larson from Captain Marvel showed up online with

her in costume or in or I'll say in a costume

and I don't know it's kind of more along the

lines of what I expected to see I don't I don't

know a whole lot about Captain Marvel the articles

that I saw floating around We're kind of surprised

to see the suit basically they were commenting

on the color scheme of the suit Because concept

art showed the more traditional red and blue

This one is more of that More of the it's like

a lime green or like a turquoise green silver

and black. Yeah And so they're you know, they're

kind of thrown off by that but having not read

the first article I saw and just giving right

to the picture I I immediately knew what was

going on It's Cree armor. It's a Cree suit At

least that's how I interpreted it when I first

saw it and then of course you read the article

and People are thrown off by the color scheme.

They don't they're theorizing as to why it's

this way and as opposed to the other way. I haven't

seen too many like negative reactions to it.

I've seen a lot of people going what the blah

blah blah like and just kind of losing it but

from what I've gathered because again I don't

know much about the character either. But they're

saying that the the the teal appearance seems

to be like a suit one, but worn by Marvail Yeah,

Marvail a create alien superhero from the ultimate.

Yeah, and I'm thinking that this may be like

when she first dons the suit because like the

hairdo somebody even Noticed that it was like

90s like and then compared it to a picture of

friends Like the haircut is like a 90s thing.

We already know it's a period piece. It's set

in the 90s. Yeah, so I'm thinking by the end

of it, she'll end up with the other color suit.

Absolutely. And then, well, not only will she

end up with it, we'll also know probably what

happened to her, like why we haven't seen her

in anything, like given that she's like the precursor

to Iron Man. Like she's after Captain America,

but before Iron Man. So. Okay, so the craziest

headline I saw here, it was on SlashFilm. I don't

know if other headlines covered it as well. But

when it comes to me, just a little aside here,

when it comes to me and movie news, if it's not

on SlashFilm, I don't really care for movie news.

Just I don't like like I'll read something like

I'll read one like the crazy headlines you see

on like Facebook or like a Or a spam article

on Twitter like I'll see the headline and then

I'll immediately head to slash film to see if

they've covered it In any capacity and it's like

if they haven't covered it then Your news is

clickbait, you know, you know, well like movie

pilot. They're they're pretty much clickbait

like every time right, right I kind of go to

Screen Rant a lot of the time. It's not that

I have anything against SlashFilm. I've checked

them too. It's just whoever I happen to click

on first. And so usually it's Screen Rant. And

they didn't have any clickbait title. It just

says Captain Marvel, Brie Larson, Donza, costume,

and new set photos. And then that's it. And then

it just kind of describes it. Yeah, but I was

just talking about this clickbait in general,

you know, like if I see something and I go, my

second source, if you will, is always SlashFilm.

So their headline, you know, basically said that

it looks like a suit from Power Rangers, which

is a reverse of like the headline we got when

the suits for Power Rangers were actually revealed

because... Websites were saying that these suits

and Power Rangers look like the suits from Iron

Man It's like You don't get to you know, like

oh the Power Rangers are now all Iron Man and

now it's back to oh this this suit looks like

a Power Rangers outfit like see I don't get that

just looking at the picture like I see You know

our typical modern -day superhero thing now granted

in this photo without these special effects or

anything else it looks like something from the

CW but It's still a superhero costume Yeah, it's

it's it is and it's I I don't know what people

really I don't know if it's so much like What

was really interesting would be the breakdown

is it is it account is a comic book fans that

are set back by it or is it like the like The

just the general movie going populous. It doesn't

follow comics. Well, this is kind of an interesting

Concept that you bring out because for instance,

I'm more of a DC fan of comics in its entirety

and every medium and then When it comes to the

Marvel universe, I have the exposure the animated

stuff as a kid But as far as these characters

in modern -day, my main exposure has been the

films and so I don't have any of the canon or

the nostalgia baggage of how they should look

or the vibes of any of them because I didn't

have that much exposure with them to begin with.

So I'm pretty much good to go with however any

of it turns out on film. Whereas DC, if it doesn't

meet my expectations of how certain characters

should look, act or behave or just how the visuals

are, throws me for a loop. I kind of think that

it might be that. I think if you weren't exposed

to it younger or exposed to it, you might not

have the same issues that somebody that read

these comics or had this predisposition of headcanon

of what things should be. Yeah, I don't know.

I'm kind of the opposite of you in certain ways,

so I cannot stand DC Comics. Ken, I've drawn

a record with this before. What I know of DC

comes primarily from their movies, and more importantly,

their animated stuff. Well, their Bruce Timm

stuff, their animated stuff from the DC animated

universe is probably the most golden, crystal

clear, cut and dry, best writing that we've ever

gotten out of the entire DC universe. Right.

Anything else outside of that is a total disaster

and mess. When I see a DC film, I more or less

think of, does this live -action DC movie live

up in some way to what I believe a live -action

Justice League episode would be? I love Marvel

Comics. More importantly, I love the X -Men comics.

I was never an Avengers fan. through each Marvel

movie that's been released, at what point, you

always hear, and I'm guilty of this too, I'm

sure a lot of people are guilty of this, but

you always hear, that's not how it was in the

comics. At what point do you actually get to,

do you wise up and sit back and go, these aren't

going to be like the comics anymore? Like, that's

not, like, You know what I'm saying? Like, everyone

expects, like, okay, so you've got... Well, they

do have the freedom of choosing from certain

storylines from the comics, but it doesn't necessarily

mean they're going to follow it to the T. Right,

exactly. But that's what I'm saying. Like, for

me, I think hoping that the Marvel movies were

going to be anything like their comic counterparts,

like, went out the window with phase two. Like

the minute we got the minute we got post Avengers

Like at that point it was like okay going forward

like nothing more importantly. It was age of

Ultron like At that point they were just grabbing

names from major comic book events and using

them as movie titles and the theme of the movie

like had little to do with Well, maybe the theme

did but the plot had nothing to do with what?

The the comic book was about yeah, right. So

Like I just like I just like like you I don't

I don't expect these to be any certain way like

I don't want to see It's it's kind of like this.

It's kind of like the joke of how many different

times Can we see uncle Ben die or how many different

times can we see? like Bruce Wayne's parents

get murdered like At a certain point you have

to evolve beyond that stuff like who who wants

to see that every time you don't even tell something

For one those are two of the most iconic superheroes

and everybody knows their origin, right? so if

you know it from the comic book or you know it

like like why do I need to Obviously you need

to do it at least once in like live -action,

right? But like you don't need to You don't need

to tell the same stories. It's kind of the same.

It's kind of the thing I have with Excuse me.

It's like one of the issues I have with the show

The Walking Dead Like just just another aside

here, but like Walking Dead The comic is amazing

The TV show like the first season was garbage

in my opinion And I've really enjoyed everything

that came after it but the worst thing I think

that they did was like adhere to the comic like

if they had I feel like because then you get

to people that just sit there and rag on it for

not being like the source material like that

in transformers gets the same rap like like I

give transformers crap for a totally different

reason and it's mostly because the writing is

bad and the aesthetics I've heard source material

referenced with Transformers before and that

just makes me laugh. I've got a pretty massive

Transformers knowledge base and I could care

less on what mythos they're deciding to pull

from this week. It's more so how non -cohesive

all of the films are together. Right. That bothers

me than anything else and and I think that the

fact that all the robots look exactly the same

pretty much on the screen is what really throws

me more so than than anything else like I think

I could look past a lot of it if they had less

of the the machinery kibble and had more of the

I'm not saying like go like full -on animated

style like and have you know the smooth sleek

everything and robot mode But like have some

of it like panels covered up better So that you

have a nice mix of the two Yeah, I think so this

kind of goes into the other thing that we kind

of wanted to bring up which was beyond bringing

up our thoughts on on the suit which is It looks

like a superhero suit. I Mean, I'm good with

it. I don't like that's that's fine. And obviously

this is like you said this is out of context.

This is probably her introduction into the suit

like her first you know foray into to fighting

crime and she's you know whatever form it is

you know Kree or otherwise and she hasn't really

gotten the knack for it yet this is like a new

suit and and then I think that later on she gets

that that other color which is exactly the same

suit just different color palette. Exactly. Much

like how Captain America goes through a couple

different suits. Yep, so the side topic that

we wanted to bring up here to kind of elongate

this or have a wider discussion is what we've

been kind of hitting on here for the last couple

minutes is butt hurt fans over like set photos.

And we've been getting this a lot lately over

the past couple years like especially the last

six months. See, okay now I've been off the radar

for a little bit here in terms of like geek news

Which is what makes us this doing this show kind

of hard for me right now But like for me like

when we when we brought up this off off before

we started recording or just bringing stuff up

like I remember fans being I remember people's

reaction negative reaction to Christopher Nolan's

tumblr like in Batman Begins because You know,

it was unlike any other Batmobile that came before

it. What was kind of cool about it, though, was

the fact that it was like... It was like if you

took... It's almost like something that you would

see in GI Joe. I mean, I'm not defending the...

I love the Tumblr. I'm not gonna sit here and

defend it. I'm just saying, like, you get...

It's almost like we could have a whole discussion

over... Things that people got but hurt over

and then we're over like an out -of -context

set photo And then we're completely taken aback

by it once the finished product was released

You know, like I feel like that's a that's a

much longer conversation for a more qualified

Movie podcast than our 20 minutes here with the

topic But I mean we can hit on some things like

I like I'm just recalling people's reaction to

the tumblr the the batwing Got the same reaction

from Dark Knight Rises. But people forget, once

these things hit the street, once the movie comes

out, it almost silences the naysayers. I have

this opinion too, watching a trailer for a movie

on your phone or even your TV at home, Like from

YouTube, like I feel like that is like completely

different than seeing that same trailer like

in a movie theater. And I can attest to that,

having sat through numerous, you know, films,

seen the seen the trailers, like even when we

all used to go to the the various movies on a

Friday night and hang out and seeing the trailer

in like IMAX compared to seeing it on your, you

know, on YouTube is totally different experience

altogether like one like sitting there in the

theater and having yourself immersed around it

or it around you it makes you that much more

excited for it you kind of vibe with what's going

on yeah whereas if you're you're kind of sitting

there staring at the screen you're kind of like

ah wins this over I gotta go watch this now One

of the things I remember, I don't even know if

we were recording podcasts. I know we were recording

podcasts at the time of this. I think you and

I may have talked about this on a podcast or

I talked about one of my many podcasts, but one

of the other things that kind of jumps to my

mind as an example of this is, we might get some

backlash here, but whatever, we need the fan

engagement here, right? The Green Lantern movie.

Yeah, like that trailer made everything about

their idea for bringing that suit to life Like

the trailer made it look like garbage. Yep, but

it didn't to me It didn't look that that that

garbage look in the trailer did not carry over

to the finished product No, actually the film

looked pretty pretty decent like as a whole.

I mean it wasn't it wasn't a good film like No,

not talking about that. I'm not I'm not but aesthetically

the other was there was a physical difference

and that Kind of makes me think of like the Star

Trek discovery trailer Mm -hmm of how when it

debuted It came out and you saw a shot of the

ship and then they did like kind of a 360 thing

around it of it leaving space dock and It looked

like the the 1970s phase two design that was

mothballed back in the 70s when they were going

to do that and they revived it and it looked

like super garbage like the CGI on it was trash

like it was just it was test footage that had

been released way too early and I was one of

the biggest haters on it because I knew where

it came from and the CG on it I'm like if this

is all that they've got to show for this show

it's doomed and you know so I was sitting there

kind of you know just dogging it I mean the show

the writing is not that solid but the aesthetics

on it because you have the backing financial

backing of Netflix and CBS which I don't think

that they had the backing of Netflix prior, but

the final product of it looks infinitely better.

Yeah, it's like. I just don't understand, you

know, I've never understood it. You know, fans

getting worked up over a picture of something

like. Because none of it's representative of

the finished product. I mean, and this carries

over to like. Don't want to drag this on another

aside but like this type of stuff like carries

over to like any like My wife and I are looking

at cars right now. Okay, this is just completely

different But but kind of the kind of similar

in my head right now, right? We're looking we're

looking at cars and we're we're looking online

first, right? So we're going to the the Chevy

website and we're doing the build a car thing.

Yep Yeah, you get the 3d thing of it, but that

that image that they're showing on the computer

is everyone knows the car looks completely different

in the field, right? Like, it doesn't look like

that. Yeah, it doesn't have the same shine or

the same, you know, the aesthetics are totally

different. Right, but it's the same idea, right?

You're getting like an idea of what this car

might look like and then you go see it in real

life and it either looks way better or way worse.

than what you saw online. It's the same idea,

right? We see this screenshot here, which is

obviously, it's a candid shot from the set, which

is a shot we will probably, we will never see

that specific shot in the movie. No. You know

what I'm saying? Nope. That's just a, here's

the suit. I mean, it might as well be the same

thing as here's concept art of what Brie Larson

is gonna look like. In this movie. Well remember

when when the the leaked footage was popping

up all over of Age of Ultron It was the same

type of thing people were like dogging it because

of certain people's costumes. I Don't I I don't

know if I went on a blackout for Age of Ultron.

I think you did I Think that you were intentionally

like kind of staying away from like any of the

spoilers and trailers Yeah, I think I was I the

Marvel stuff is like the the Marvel movies is

something like I know that I'm already gonna

go see them Like it's it's a it's a foregone

conclusion at this point Just give me a release

date, and I'll buy my ticket like I don't care

what the character is I'm gonna go to see how

it fits in with the rest of the story But I don't

know what do you is there listeners is there

like a a But hurt fandom that you can think of

or a time that you've been You've been completely

wrong about a set photo where you know you you

got mad about something and and The the production

value of it. You were proven wrong once you saw

the final product or maybe you were vindicated
