About this Episode

The panel discusses upcoming MagFest happenings, digs into streaming service changes and content availability, explores Nielsen ratings versus DVR and torrent tracking, and tackles a rapid-fire "Ten Minute Blitz" covering everything from Cadbury Cream Eggs to Windows 7 support to The Pirate Bay's cryptic comeback. They also touch on internet drama, cable bundling debates, and the state of television cancellations.

Hey, this is Steve blue and you are listening

to the geek cast radio network Hello and welcome

to Altered Geek Unlimited episode 73. Yes, last

week I misquoted because I miscounted. You're

a terrible person, Steve. Quit the show. Yeah,

I've had that suggestion a couple times. Geez.

Kind of joking, but anyways, the panel this week

rounds out with the same panel we had last week.

That's right. Happiness is mandatory now. They

gave us happy pills and they took our AARP card

away. That's a horse of a different color. Like

you, you're not allowed to be sad anymore. Be

happy or I'll kick the shit out of you. They've

got socks filled with billiard balls, guys. We

are back and we are so happy. I can't stop smiling.

It hurts. Okay, out of the three of us, Mike

and I are the fattest. So I'm wondering, out

of Mike and I, who would be Gomer Pyle who gets

beaten with the Sparsas soap from Full Metal

Jacket in the socks? Probably be me. I'd say

someone to piss someone off. So, should we talk

about why we're so happy this week? I think we

can save that for just a few minutes. We can

do like a brief round table of what's been new.

Oh, have I got a story for you then, if you want

to talk about music. Well, this weekend, coming

up in Maryland, is MagFest, one of the best conventions

you can go to, hang out with a bunch of internet

people. It's usually a really awesome time. Internet

drama aside. This year brings something special.

And I'm actually going to read this to you because

it's so good. There is the MagFest 2hoo Orgy

2015. What? On January 23rd, the 26th, there

will be a large group of guys and girls in one

of the suites, we don't have a number yet, who

will be hosting this year's MagFest 2hoo Group

Casual. Our suite will be stocked full of all

the necessities needed for endless sex for whoever

is in attendance. If interested, you can find

this large group of two -hoos on the floor and

ask around for where the orangey's at. Or you

can email with your violin picture. If you can

find where it is at and show up, expect to be

carded. Minimum age 21 IDs will be checked, as

there will be alcohol minimum. No exceptions.

You must be a cosplayer. The Tokus automatically

get special access to the private lounge. They

have a Twitter. My eyes are bleeding. What the

hell did I just hear? Let me tell you, if there

is good news to this week, there's going to be

a group of weirdos getting their sexy on. Oh

yeah. If you want to dress up like a maid and

get blown by a guy who looks like Pikachu, you

can make that happen. God So much for turning

this into a family show That's actually really

hilarious Not just one Hey man, if you can't

be your future spouse without a ball gag Do the

Oprah thing Tell him man Here's a family, here's

a family You can take him home, and her, and

him. Now the best part about going to the MAGFest

is the one is, I've went two years in a row.

The last time I was there at the hotel that it's

hosted at, which is the Gaylord International

in DC, they had this Shrek theme going on. So

you'd have all these really sexy girls in cosplay,

dudes in like super buff armor, next to fucking

Shrek and Fiona. It's weird. Like I said, who

knows? Perhaps this is the beginning of your

family, where you, dressed as Ash Katcham, can

meet your wife dressed up as the Major from Ghost

in the Shell, and have sex with ball gags and

furries. I'm looking forward to it. Back to you

fuckers! Okay, and... Could have sworn you were

gonna say this weekend was gonna be awesome because

you'd be sleeping on spade his couch again It

won't just be his couch We've been hanging out

with Mike too long Okay, this is not related

to anything but I just got a message of a dude

on Facebook who just sent me a picture of Hitler

Say, fucking American, we get you down, Germany.

What? That's just weird. I'm gonna send him a

picture of Bugs Bunny. You should send him Wile

E. Coyote and say, this is the equivalent of

who you've sent me. Yeah. All he does is blow

himself. Oh damn! I thought you were going to

add the up on the end of that! No, I did that

on purpose. Oh my god. Okay, what have you been

up to, Steve? Well, for instance, I was the first...

day that I saw the comments, which we'll get

into later, I was kind of wallowing in it like,

oh shit, what do I do? But then had this thing

called school start again. I still have yet to

get a book for my online class, which kind of

sucks, because I don't really have time for it

now. And then my class is an hour and a half,

and it's like 1230 to 2, so I have to allow myself

15 minutes before and after class to drive to

the campus. Oh, jeez. Which is literally about

10 minutes from where I work, if that. The longest

part is finding a damn parking spot. And today

it was the, because it was recording on Tuesday,

the hard part was finding the damn classroom

because I walked down one hallway and it was

like 11, or... 1017 or something for the classroom

and I walk in it's like 1107 and I'm like, okay,

where do I go? And so I start following it around

and I get it down into the 1030s and then I turn

a corner and it's the 1300s. Oh jeez. And I'm

like, okay, where did the rest of the numbers

go? And I ended up finding a doorway which goes

to another doorway which took me where I needed

to go and went into the class. And mind you,

this is new for me being that it's a acting class.

And I'm normally a chicken shit in public, believe

it or not. My persona is so much more reserved.

I'm not as outgoing in person as I am on the

internet because no one sees your face. Exactly.

That makes it easier sometimes, although I am

learning to project my online personality in

public, which kind of helps. We were in the class

and the teacher just right off the bat starts

talking about freedom of speech and being offended.

I shit you not that is what he started talking

out about after he got through the part of the

syllabus and he says The the whole idea of being

offended over something he says or somebody being

offended because what it what it came out of

this he was talking about the fact that You have

to say lines at some point which may say something

you don't want to say He said more or less fucking

deal with it And he said that in just brutal

honesty and managed to piss off one person that

actually left the class and didn't come back.

But in doing so, he said that when people get

offended over stuff, he says, you're protected

by free speech. He says, you can't have... Free

speech and be offended. He says if you don't

want to be offended don't open your fucking mouth

And I just I just was like, oh wow, this is just

hilarious And and so yeah, this whole thing goes

by and then you know, we're actually learning

in the class after that and he tells us this

this quote from something or an excerpt of a

script Or a monologue that we actually have to

write and then memorize Which the memorization

part will be difficult for me, but that's He

said you can interpret it any way you want. He

says you can be a dude in you know pretend you're

a Killer you know a weird stalker. He says you

could you know be you know just you could twist

it any way you want which I thought was kind

of hilarious. So I'm debating whether I'm going

to be mimicking a guy I work with who's in his

late 70s and he sounds like this when he talks

or by talking like the Joker and reading the

lines which I think would actually be hilarious

because I think it would throw everybody off.

They would just... Not know what the hell to

do Joker's sitting here reading these lines almost

Shakespearean in context Or you could do it as

crying That'll really freak people out Hey, I

don't know if it'd work with this text because

I thought about doing it as Beast Wars Megatron

and that Wouldn't flow very well. So that's the

only reason I was thinking the old man or doing

the Joker So but yeah that that was the extent

of my day for me this past week I have been Setting

up and getting ready to do multiple recordings

for movie and review to cast me on all that good

stuff to get the year off started right I have

been I actually just edited Showtime synergy

episode 1 this afternoon Ended up being just

shy of two hours uh... so that's uh... i'm telling

you the jim show the jim review show we've got

coming is going to be some people are going to

just laugh their asses off at that because every

single time i get with uh... get get together

on skype with my friends amy and nicole i'd just

laugh my ass off it's non -stop i wish i had

all the in -between recording things recorded

kids all my god it's just hilarious What else

have I been doing this week? Getting my top 10

TV shows and top 20 soundtracks of 2014 kind

of going again and getting that kind of finalized

and whatever else for blogs. TV's Mr. Neil and

I just recorded the final episode of Tunecast

Beyond's Animation Direction, which, because

this is Tuesday, it will have already been out.

We talked about Chuck Jones. Let's see, what

else, what else, what else? Yeah, this is pretty

much it. Waiting for all of the shows to kind

of come back. Mike, have you checked out CBS's

Scorpion at all? No, I saw... I saw the trailer,

so it looked interesting. The thing that completely

turned me off of it, though, I think it was on

I09 or something. There was, this is single -handedly

the stupidest hacking scene in the history of

media. I saw it, I'm thinking, well, that's enough

of that stupidity. And I haven't bothered. Which

hacking scene? The one with the plane? I don't

know, something about a fucking airplane and

it seems more like a land cable or something?

Yeah, that was in the pilot, but I'm telling

you, the characters, just everything about it

has been really, really cool. Are you ever a

fan of the American Pie movies, Mike? I know,

but I'm... Okay, and now I'm really curious to

know how this connects. At E .K. Thomas, Finchie

is one of the characters. He's the behavioral

psychologist part of the Genius team. That in

the American Pie movies? Yeah. No, who was that

with... Uh, Finch. Uh, Stifler's mom... Oh, Shitbrick!

Yeah, Shitbrick. Oh, okay. Well, that's more

interesting now. It's pretty awesome. I might

get a chance to check it out. I mean, the only

thing I'm really watching on TV is all the super

stuff and Master Chef Junior and some other shit.

Actually, all I watch is superhero stuff and

food stuff. Ultimate nerd combo, I guess. Yeah.

Yeah. So jumping a little bit down the line I

Will save part of housekeeping till the end of

the show I think Let's say we get into this week

in nerd history, which is something I'm going

to try out and see how it happens and See how

it's received anyhow So anyways, I'm doing it

this week because it's easier than doing it a

week instead of a day. On the 9th of January

in 2009, I know it's kind of a weird set of days,

but being that it's the 11th to the 17th this

week, but whatever, it's tailing the last week.

Anyways, the final episode of Stargate Atlantis

airs. uh... the same day in two thousand seven

the apple introduces the iphone to the public

at the mac world x conference in expo doesn't

seem like it's that long ago that they did that

yeah it is actually thought it was earlier than

that because it didn't it premiere in june of

that year june or july Mike I don't know. I don't

know. Oh God, he's like drunk bastard Anyhow,

I'll move on the 12th of January 1964 the founder

of Amazon is born That's kind of crazy, you know

in the meth capital of the world Albuquerque

bugs money should have taken a left turn there

and a right exit stage left uh... on the thirteenth

of january nineteen sixty six batman starting

at a must in bird warren premiered in a bc which

i did not know i knew it aired in nineteen sixty

six i just did not know what station in one day

uh... the thirteen yes and That's like those

graphics, what are they, and now you know, or

something like that. And they have the little

goofy star on them. Oh, no, no, no, that's NBC,

the more you know, and it has the peacock at

the end of it. Oh, the more you know, okay. Okay,

yeah, that's funny. of January 2000, Bill Gates

relinquishes his title as CEO to Microsoft President

Steve Ballmer. I did not know Ballmer's been

in charge that long. Good Lord. That's almost

scary to think about that he's been in charge

that long. 15 years, jeez. I thought Ballmer

had only been in charge maybe like 10, 8, something

like that. I didn't think he's been in charge

that long. Well, it's not even 15 years because

he stepped down. Goes at tail end at 2013. Oh,

okay. Yeah 13. Thanks It may have been No, it

wasn't 14 because the other guy had already been

in charge for a while And finally the 13th of

January 1930 or yet 1993 DS 9 debuts Hmm Star

Trek deep space 9 interesting, you know the funny

thing Do you have premiere in January, too? I'm

not quite sure. It may have, but it wasn't that

this specific week. Huh. Well, now we know. And

knowing is half the battle. The other half is

red laser and blue laser. That's right. The funny

thing about the Batman thing is it only took

them X number of years to finally get the show

on DVD, and next year in 2016 is its 50th anniversary.

Although the story of how Batman got on DVD is

so frigging interesting because of all the rights

clearances And all the legal stuff there. I think

there was a guy His entire job was to go through

all this handwritten correspondence over like

20 years It was ridiculous like go like go go

like Google it or something. I remember reading

an article I turn over where the hell I I read

it. I think it was on Kotaku or something But

it was insane Which by the way for those you

that own the Batman 66 blue rated set There is

a replacement program for certain discs that

are fucked up Yeah, and you need to contact Warner

Brothers for that. So it's just a heads up Quality

control. It's a lost art Recently that's had

a problem like this the last big release I could

think that had a recall program was for Star

Trek, I think it was the Next Generation Season

2. Had a fucked up disc and I think that was

pretty much the point. Yeah, the remastered.

Yeah, yeah. Which I finally got all those now

on Blu -Ray. Never thought I'd own the complete

Star Trek The Next Generation on Blu -Ray. It

eventually will. Pardon? I says I eventually

will, but I have them all on Netflix right now,

so. Which in Canada the only thing we have now

for Star Trek is all we have is TNG although

Through other services like crave TV and show

me which are these new streaming providers? You

can get them on there which They're odd point

to talk about this. I found out American Netflix.

You're losing almost all your like BBC shows

Which doesn't affect me personally because I

don't watch any of them, but I do understand

that a lot of people do. Yeah, like that's Doctor

Who, that's Red Dwarf, Downtown Abbey. Sherlock.

Sherlock, which I really need the power of those

then. But I don't think that'd take me too long

like a day. Red Dwarf. So that sucks. We've also

lost all the contracts for most of the Hasbro

cartoons trans all the Transformers cartoons

are pretty much gone Jam will be leaving the

February 2nd I would love if Cartoon Network

or somebody or Nickelodeon just some kids network

picked up a crap ton of rights to old cartoons

and it was like strictly for that Yeah. I would

pay ten bucks a month for that. It's cartoons

from 1960 to now. And if it was like Hulu, where

if you missed a week, it was there, the next

day. I would pay money for that. Large amount.

Yeah, we need something. Somebody make that shit

happen. Yeah, please. Yeah, put it on Hulu so

we actually have an excuse to buy it. See, I

watch Hulu and control. Mike knows why I threw

that dig in there. I like Hulu! No, no, no, it's

a long -ass story. We make a long -ass story

short. It's back to the old Tooncast. Oh, didn't

somebody give you shit because they're like,

you love Netflix and hate Hulu. They still were

doing it until this year when we permanently

got them kicked off of iTunes US. It's funny,

though, because, see... I could see their point,

but Hulu has the annoying fucking ass. See, that's

- Well, no, they're saying that we were being,

uh, prejudiced against them. Bullies. Bullies.

And bullies, we were telling people that, you

know, we hate them because they use Hulu and

all this other stuff, and it's not even true.

It's the only reason we use - because they're

saying that we never pimp out Hulu or anything

else, and it's like, we don't - What are the

alternatives? Well, there's Amazon Prime, Hulu...

HBO Go. Yeah. I don't use any of the streaming

services. The only reason I use Netflix is because

it has more variety than what, you know, I really

need, but it's more than like Hulu and I don't

want to watch commercials. And it's better than

piracy. Yeah. Right now, the only reason why

I use Hulu is for He -Man and the Master's Universe

and She -Ra Princess of Power to get Powers of

Grayskull series done for that podcast. And the

funny thing is in the last two weeks, I believe

I've intentionally said several times in episode

36 and 37 of Tales of Eternia, guys, I'm watching

this show on Hulu. So you can't, you know, I

didn't really, you know, but I did make that.

I just wish Hulu had a better back catalog of

cartoons. They've got some cool stuff on there,

but I'd like to see them get more. Like, I don't

know. I mean, it'd be really cool if they could

get the entire Filmation back catalog or something.

Like, hell, I would love to get that Ghostbusters

series on there, or even the real Ghostbusters,

you know, stuff like that. I'm actually really

surprised No Service has that. Yeah, that's true.

They've got the movies and shit. Yeah. They should

just have a nostalgia channel. Dude, money, throw

down a hole. They should have like a Netflix

for all the old stuff, and then they should have

a Netflix for all the new stuff, and then charge

20 bucks a month for the whole fucking package.

There was something I saw, and this was earlier,

I think it was middle of last year to late last

year. There's a channel... On the internet somewhere.

I can't remember where it is, but it's broadcasting

old Nickelodeon. Right. 1990? 2000? Mm -hmm.

Old commercials and all the shows as they were

originally broadcast. And it's part of some school's

experiment for something. I wish I could remember

what the hell it was. If anybody knows what the

hell I'm talking about, please let me know. I

remember reading about it, though, and I'm thinking,

man, I wish I could get this to work. And I didn't

have my VPN configured correctly on my computer

to get it to work. But man, that would be the

shit. Old school Nickelodeon or old school Cartoon

Network. But wait, actually, I kind of want to

bring this up. And I know this is jumping ahead

a fair chunk. And that feedback that we got talking

about how all the old stuff is crap and all the

new stuff is great. This person brought up Star

Trek things. And I actually spent a day or two

actually kind of stewing about this. In a fever

dream. In bed. I kind of did too. Talking to

Captain Kirk and Captain Janeway at the same

time. It was great. Oh Lord. And I really got

to thinking. It's not that they're wrong and

it's not that they're right. Each of the film

series has good movies and bad movies. I got

to thinking what movies of the original series

suck and this would be something we should probably

save for future imperfect. I was just thinking

movie one sucked, two is awesome, three is okay,

four is hilarious, five is just god -need with

a starship. Six is badass. Generations is...

It's middle of the ground. It's okay, I guess.

First Contact is the most amazing Star Trek movie

ever. Insurrection is the long episode they couldn't

squeeze on TV. Nemesis is okay. It's got Doom

buggies. It has double data and Captain Picard

finally gets seat belts on the Enterprise. And

Star Trek 09 is really cool and in the darkness.

If you could turn your brain off, it's all right.

If you don't look at it as a serious Star Trek

movie, it's OK. Just my thoughts is very, very,

very kind of briefly, because I was actually

thinking about that the other day. Like, how

would you even reboot a show for now? I kind

of wonder if Star Trek will have to stay in movies.

I don't know if it would necessarily work on

TV again. But that's a future imperfect discussion.

Just random thoughts I had. Once again, Captain

Kirk and Janeway, we're all sharing a bed cuddling.

Oh, good Lord, stop it. Jesus Christ, Mike. Janeway

was haunted back in 1996. I don't know what happened

since then. You know why? I would still do things

to Catherine Janeway. Okay, okay, stop. Just

stop. Stop. When she talks like a Russian or

when she talks like Janeway? Both. Tell me what

to do, Reg. Just tell me what to do. So going

off of this thing and not really getting into

the feedback. Not really getting into the feedback,

but part of the feedback was that... We all like

stuff from you know our childhood more than stuff

for today the problem I have with specifically

television today is That back when I was growing

up in the 80s Shows were given a chance to grow

like nowadays you have a show like That's one

of my biggest questions. Why do the studios,

ABC - I don't - No, no, no, wait, wait, wait.

Why do studios like ABC, NBC, Fox, CBS, CW, whatever,

why do they put all of this money, they create

Twitter handles, they create Facebook pages,

they put all this promotion and marketing into

a show, and then it only lasts three to five

episodes and is done? Because I can actually

answer this from a television perspective. Because

unless you've got the right buzz going in, you're

not going to attract advertisers. Advertisers

are very leery. Because of the way television

is now handled, both online and traditional media,

unless you're attracting so much, you're going

to lose money. You're going to cut your losses

sooner. Now, I'm glad you mentioned way back

in the day. And I can bring up an example. I

think this would have actually happened. Let's

take the Fox series firefly. It's a cool series

Broadcast at 13 episodes should have went longer,

right? We can more or less agree on this point

It got canceled in the early 2000s, right? Right

if that show had premiered in 1992 or say 93

Guarantee you that show would have went three

seasons Because it would have had a chance as

you said might defined its ground because eyes

are on television. The internet was not a thing

yet. At least not a very big thing. But see,

even now the cable companies and the television

studios are taking the internet and DVR and everything

else into account. Like I know of several podcasts

I listen to that do weekly television reviews

of like Gotham and Scorpion and Stalker and whatever

else that I listen to. One of them actually has

brought up DVR. ratings or DVR numbers, so they're

tracking all this stuff now. What they're doing

is they're... Well, recently they're essentially

making the Nielsen ratings a thing of the past.

Yeah, but I mean... Because they're not reliable.

Well, they're not reliable because it's only

covering what's actually on the television. The

DVR is a completely different number, the internet's

a different number, and even torrent numbers,

love them or hate them... Also kind of contribute

to the to the the factor of the show as well

because it shows how many people are actually

paying attention to it Game of Thrones and Breaking

Bad They're the most torrented shows ever Because

people torrent the early seasons and then they're

stuck watching them as they debut on TV, you

know and You know, that actually happens with

a lot of shows I watch. I mean, I get into them,

I torrent them, and then I'm stuck watching them

week to week after that because I get caught

up. But I think in addition to that issue of

the reason why we think stuff in the old days

were better, yeah, and I agree with you, Dodd,

on the Star Trek issue that, you know, those

movies were good and then... The only one I hate

on is the Into Darkness, but that, again, we've

already heard about it a million times. Oh, God,

we spent like an hour and a half bashing that

movie. Well, I mean, and we've done it on Future

Imperfect a couple times, too. So I'm not going

to beat that dead horse. And the Nolan thing,

that was more so a comment. I dislike a few of

his films. I don't hate everything he does. I

just, to me, he's another one of those Irene

and J .J. Abrams. But the the thing is is I think

a lot of the the problem with TV now And and

entertainment in general is there's so much of

it out there There's such an overload of of the

content where it's back in the 90s and even the

80s and everything a limited release in in television

and on on film and things tended to get a lot

better footing Back then because there wasn't

as much competition. Whereas now it's it's so

cutthroat that if you can't make it within the

first two episodes You're done. Well, yeah, because

I like when you think back to the 80s and 90s

Think how many dramas were actually on TV, right?

I mean you had I'm trying to think of examples

here because I'm more a 90s child when it comes

to this stuff I mean your law of them are still

around. Yeah, I mean Law and order is one of

the few Show still around. I mean admittedly.

It's only SBU now. Yeah That was a million incarnations

and that was a staple of Wednesday nights And

yet you think back to other shows like other

dramas like you think of the X -files? My wife

saying nightcore, but that's a comedy but that's

another thing too comedies back then were given

a chance to grow and nowadays Yeah, like Fox

for example, and this is what I don't get they

have a show on there called Malaney, which is

utterly frigging terrible and the only reason

it was kept alive and given a shortened season

because I've got nothing else Because other shows

get cut. Well, like you guys said so quickly.

There's a show this year I loved it. It was on

ABC and it was called selfie It was Karen Gillian

from Doctor Who and John Cho from from Star Trek

and he had such good chemistry and writing in

that show Had it gone a full season, I think

it would have been very successful. Now, they

did put the episodes on Hulu that didn't get

broadcast. But Steve's right though, there's

so much competition out there. You don't make

it in three to five episodes, you're done. Well,

I think the issue is selfie. I think that from

what I gather, again, it's not one that's hit

my radar. It would essentially be what the...

like the ugly Betty thing is in the past that

my wife watched that and I catch it occasionally

when I'm stuck in the same room. But it kind

of sounds like the same type of vibe to that.

But I think part of what killed that show is

the name. Yeah, I honestly think the pound sign

selfie or whatever, I think that whole thing

was the reason why that show didn't get as much

traction as what it probably should have. Because

it's just to me, I mean, and this is just my

personal bias right here, but. hate that word

with a passion because it's so asinine but that's

just again that's my my my bias there but I think

that I I do honestly think though that if it

had a different name I think people would have

gauged it better I mean yeah you know I've mentioned

this before and I'm kind of over it now but like

you know sticking with the whole Fox bandwagon

they put Red Band Society on the shelf after

only 13 episodes. I mean, I'm glad it got 13

episodes, but they pretty much left us on a cliffhanger.

And the show probably is never going to come

back, which really does suck because I truly

felt that that was one of the best new shows

to come out of last year's fall new premieres.

If there's anything that we've learned, though,

in the recent years, it's that nothing stays

dead. There's always now the possibility that

things can jump between different providers,

different channels. You look at Community, how

many times that's jumped around, or Futurama,

or stuff like that. Just based on critical acclaim

from the fans, that has enough driving force

to have, even if it's not the original station

that aired it. come up with more seasons of it,

and the potential for these shows to live on

even past their cancellation is infinite. Yeah,

that's true. So, with that, I think we should

take a quick break, and we'll come back with

the Blitz. Ten Minute Blitz! Ten! Ten minute

blitz. Ten minute blitz. And we're back to do

the ten minute blitz. It's been a while since

we've done this and I think that it will work

out pretty well doing whatever we happen to pull

up. So anybody have a suggestion on a starting

topic? I think we should just go down the list,

just go from top to finish, and I'll kind of

lead this one off. Well, I think we ought to

just get the Easter stuff out of the way first.

They're changing the recipe to Cadbury Cream

Eggs. Oh no! The end of civilization as we know

it! Yeah, pretty much. I don't think that's going

to have as much of a lasting impact as what people

think. I don't care, they're still tasty, I'll

still eat them. It's like new Coke, it'll change.

Birdman? Hold on a second. Now I've closed what

I was looking for. Give me a second here. Okay,

so we saw the first look at the Firestorm costume

for Arrow. I'm okay with it. It looks okay. You

know, it fits in -universe. It's not as bright

and insane as the comic book version, so I'm

cool with that. Although they're talking about

giving... Mean sticking with the CW news. I'm

just gonna throw us into one big news pile here

They're talking about giving the atom his own

series. I Think that's a mistake. I like Brandon

rep do not get me wrong But the problem is though.

I don't think you should oversaturate the CW

DC universe just yet Because I think if you build

on it too much, it's gonna collapse. Oh, absolutely

Yeah, like, let people get attached to Flash.

People already love Arrow. Let it be. Now, they're

even talking about some animated series called

Vixen taking place in the Arrow universe, which

is kind of a neat idea. That's kind of cool.

It's gonna be a web -only thing, though, so...

Okay, alright, then. I wasn't sure whether it

was actually gonna be broadcast or not, so...

Nope. I would like to see, though, if they could,

probably not gonna happen... Because NBC's Constantine,

they haven't decided whether it's coming back

or not yet for season two. They halted production,

but that doesn't necessarily mean shit. It may

have just got a short season. I would love to

see CW pick up that series. Because for some

reason, the powers that we have decided Supernatural

needs to go around again, quite more things again.

This will mark, and this is a CW thing, this

will make the first time that a show's gone past

10 seasons on the channel. And I think they need

to let that series end and let Constantine fill

that supernatural void there, because I think

they could take advantage of the DC property,

but also take advantage of the fact that if they

want a supernatural drama... That isn't fucking

Vampire Diaries or Teen Wolf or something. Well,

they're gonna have iZombie on there too, so.

That's not gonna last beyond seven episodes.

They're gonna be like, this isn't The Walking

Dead. Well, it's funny, like, zombie shows aren't

The Walking Dead. Like, there's one over on,

I think, the sci -fi channel called Zombie Nation.

Yeah. That's stupid. Yeah, it's Z Nation, yeah.

Yeah, and the Zombieland thing never went beyond

pilot. I don't know, I just... At least we know

Arrow and Flash are getting another season. Yeah,

and that's no big surprise and that's good. They're

already talking Agent Carter season 2. Can we

really even call that a season 2 because the

way ABC is even promoting that is it's a 7 episode

mini series. I mean, you could call it the second

act if you really wanted to. Like they could

jump some time. Yeah. like i think that i think

that's really cool especially if they picked

it up in like you know the 50s or 60s like especially

when all of the uh like after the mccarthy trials

for communism come out or something like that

looking for maybe soviet defectors i mean they've

already had i they've already had uh the vonko

guy and that's uh the crimson dynamo's dad yeah

so i don't know i mean it it could be really

cool i mean Agents of shield is guaranteed for

as long as the Marvel universe remains profitable

Until it collapses on itself. I Don't think you'll

see that until I think the big year telling will

be 2017 When we start getting building up to

Avengers because you have inhumans Black Panther

Guardians 2 I don't know. I think 2017 is gonna

be a big year because you're gonna see how well

Marvel's still gonna be Performing because you

still have Captain America Civil War Justice

Doctor Strange that year. I think 2016, right?

Yeah. Yeah, so I think those movies should do

fine But I think superhero burnout is gonna happen

2017 You're probably right. It's it's but it's

like the whole pirates thing and the whole vampire

thing it just it they're constantly one after

the other replacing each other and it just dies

out it's phases and you know what I think Marvel

has the advantage in the fact that there hasn't

really been a terrible Marvel movie yet when

there's a truly terrible one then the bubbles

gonna burst yeah I have to agree with you there

I think that that'll happen eventually I don't

think that it's coming anytime soon but I have

to agree once You know, we start getting a lot

more from from DC and Marvel in there. It's going

to blow up. Yeah, I mean, I'm hoping we get good

quality films for the foreseeable future, because

I really, in fact, that's something I'm really

excited about for movies for the next year is

all the Marvel stuff and maybe Star Wars. And

if you want to hear something truly sad and blasphemous,

I'm more excited about Terminator than I am Star

Wars. I'm more excited about both that and Star

Wars over Jurassic Park. Yeah, Jurassic Park

is okay. Sure. I'll see it if I got nothing else

to do that day. It's not an opening day for me.

And I remember seeing Jurassic Park opening day

when I was a kid in grade five. Oh, I don't know.

And dinosaurs are awesome, but I don't care.

I mean, it's been 14 years since we had the last

Jurassic Park movie. It's been really There really

wasn't a need past the first one, honestly. It's

been 25 years since I've cared about dinosaurs

at all, unless they're dino -bots. Unless they're

part of Transformers lore, I don't care anymore.

Well, I don't know. I mean, there's some really

- I take Jurassic Park over what we got in Age

of Extinction. No, when I mean dino -bots - I

know what you mean. I mean like the comics or

the cartoon or - I didn't mean that travesty

of what those - Anyways. Anyways Windows 7 exits

mainstream support Which has Mike upset? No,

I'm not really that upset. I'm just like it took

them forever to end the the Windows XP support.

Why are they now only waiting? Well, I mean they're

on 8 .1 and they're coming out with 10. So it's

it's only right that they're starting I think

I've got a Windows 7 machine. I'm pretty sure

I did I'm using Windows 7 on my machine right

now, but I'll probably buy 10 when that is out.

I guess when I have to upgrade, I'll do it. That's

what I'll do. I'll put 10 on. I'll end up putting

10 on, but I had XP on this machine before, so

it'll be fine. I missed the simplicity of XP.

Well, 7, you can set it up so that it runs like

XP, which is what I've done. It looks like it

and runs like it and then I've also figured out

a hack in Windows 8 to disable the Metro bar

and turn on the original start menu. So There's

that too But they're not ending complete support

of it until 2020. So you have five more years

Pirate Bay code is just decrypted in hilarious

return declaration I don't know if anybody saw

that No, I missed that please Yes, so I saw this

yesterday It says that There was a redditor user

that figured out that the AES dot PNG file that

was on the site is advanced encryption standard

technology He decrypted half of the message with

password hashing algorithm algorithms and It

Essentially comes up with a supercut of Arnold

saying I'll be back as their their gag on the

website And the countdown of the site is currently

counting down to February 1st To where they will

revive themselves I'm looking forward to having

it back more reliably me not that I encourage

piracy I don't use it for... Sometimes, it's

a good way to preview something. Yeah, and for

the most part, once in a while I use it for a

movie that's in the theater if I can't get out

kind of thing, and then I determine whether it's

something I really want to see or not. I mean,

99 % of the time, if it's something I like, I

buy the blasted Blu -ray anyway because that's

just how I am. For me, I use it for movies that

are not on Netflix. I would gladly pay for the

movie if it was on Netflix. You know what I mean?

Yeah. If the content catalogs were bigger. And

then at the same time, I use it for all my TV

downloading. I don't really care about that.

Like I don't download games or any of that kind

of stuff, like because I just don't care. I'd

rather own it. But like TV, if it's something

I'm watching week to week, I do that because

it's just easier. So I can't remember the last

thing I actually downloaded. And you know what

and this will be Like we're all guys here, you

know torrents have porn. I Can't remember the

last time I actually did I can't remember the

last time I actually downloaded porn And I bring

that up because the adult industry was really

worried about torrents Ruining their kind of

livelihood and I don't hear a lot about that

anymore I mean, I'm sure it still affects like

porn hub and all that shit, but actually help

there's a really bit of here's a bit of really

weird news they have their own esports team now

how does that even work i think they're getting

paid by pornhub and i think they're playing competitive

league of legends which is like a MOBA which

isn't my thing of gaming i mean if they did like

a call of duty team or something but activision

won't touch that with a 10 -foot pole but league

of legends doesn't care So I was just thinking

about that because I you never hear about people

forking porn anymore now It's like there isn't

actually I know there was a service like that.

They tried to have an app approved for PlayStation

I don't think it ever happened though. Where

was like Netflix but for porn And there was like

a little black stick or something you could put

in your ps3 or so. I can't remember what the

hell it was Oh, I know what you're talking about.

Yeah. Yeah, I wonder what it was Okay, okay.

So here's the deal. This actually ties into Amazon

it too There's a website out there called fire

TV calm. It's f y re TV calm so but it's pronounced

as fire TV and They were going to sue Amazon

Because Amazon came out with their fire TV and

fire TV stick and fire phone and fire this and

fire that and whatever else But yeah, it's basically

It is net it is basically the Netflix for porn,

but you actually have to you can buy scenes I

mean you there are multiple different ways to

do it. You can buy individual scenes or you can

buy You can buy whole movies, you can buy a subscription

to a certain studio, but I'm sure the subscriptions

actually will get very expensive. It would have

to be ludicrously expensive. I'm sure it is,

yeah. But yeah, I remember that story when I

came across that online about them suing Amazon

for the name. Which I kind of wonder how no one's

monopolized that yet, but I guess because porn

has so many different studios They probably just

can't come to some kind of an agreement. Yeah

Which I don't know. I mean hell there's another

way to curb piracy of pornography if people want

to pay for it You know someone to me obviously

porn stars making out money off their websites

to get by Well, you could probably say their

dick just wasn't in it Bad jokes just come through

my head sometimes so it's all Mike's fault true.

I'm definitely the worst person You know Yeah.

So after the guy sent me the picture of Hitler

and the word Germany, I sent him that picture

of Bugs Bunny, he called me a Jew, and then I

blocked him. That's right, my Fuhrer, suck my

ass. That's awesome. What a pussy party, who

does that? Internet races. Just so adorable.

That was just horrible. Oh, man. So yeah Blitz

is over and we've gone on that dark road New

York Comic Con 2014 there was a real -life Peter

Griffin at it. Oh That guy that guy's awesome.

I watched that video the other day and he just

goes yeah And you know does the voice and it

just it was hilarious Yeah, that guy is utterly

fantastic. I would like to see him do more conventions.

In fact, I think they should find, Seth MacFarlane

should find a part for him in his next movie,

even if it's just like a three -second cameo.

I think that'd be hilarious. Just him walk, well,

him walk in on Ted too. Yeah, and just laugh

and walk by. That'd be great. I mean, sure, this

kid gets a little bit of exposure, and Seth MacFarlane

gets to say, oh my god, my cartoons have come

to life. It would be funnier if he if he had

him walk through Ted to is like a guy that worked

at the guy's office I'm sitting at the chair

and say no Brian and then just start talking

to him on the phone And then the bear kicks his

ass it's the new Teddy Rocks been ladies and

gentlemen If Ted too had a scene where Ted auditioned

to be the new Teddy Ruxman, I would die. I would

seriously poop my pants in the theater because

that would be so funny. Did anybody ever see

McFarlane's last movie? Did anybody actually

see A Million Ways to Die in the West? No, I

did. I never did. No, it wasn't too bad as much

as people are saying that it was. Well, here's

a question to Netflix or pirate Netflix is just

easier Like I don't have cable right now because

it costs too damn much I wish that I wish cable

because I know or sorry there was a website that

came up today in my Facebook feed, and I think

we should share it with the listeners here. Just

let me find it. What does it show RSS? It was

something like, what are you paying for? And

it was a breakdown of every streaming service

versus cable over the course of one year. And

it shows you should you cut the cord or not.

I think I saw an article floating around about

that, but I didn't know what. Facebook right

now I think it's important and I think people

would actually Use this because I think this

will be a thing that'll come up Likely in other

conversations In the future and I think this

might help people make up their mind I also said

to you Blanchard so you can take a look But yeah,

just randomly thought of that. Sorry go on It

was on, I think it was on slate .com, wasn't

it? I saw this one on Lifehacker today. Okay.

Lifehacker. It's an amazing website you all should

check out. Sometimes you get some really cool

apps off there. I know I got one alarm clock

app I use for my iPhone like every day off there.

And sometimes just you get some really neat web

tools or like actually there's a really cool

thing on there. They do it every couple months.

They post links to an online school where you

can legitimately get certifications for shit

for free. Or courses that are legitimately accredited.

So if you want to take your education to the

next level because, hey, you're bored, you never

know. Hmm. And now you know. You know, maybe

this year I'll take a course on something for

something to do. I haven't thought about it.

Should you cut the cord thing? They talk about

the Sling TV, which is a new service that will

provide consumers who'd rather not pay for cable

TV with live streaming of ESPN, TNT, TBS, CNN,

and some other cable channels for 20 bucks a

month. And there's two other services launching

this year, PlayStation Vue and HBO Streaming.

The Sling TV will expand the universe of a la

carte digital media consumption beyond Netflix,

Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Yeah, it says, but how

many of these services can you subscribe to before

you're paying more than you would with cable?

Yeah, that's exactly the article that I was talking

about, yeah. And then they break it down like

they show that that Amazon Prime is 100 bucks

a year Hulu Plus 95 bucks a year Netflix is a

hundred and seven eighty eight a year Sling TV

is 240 a year CBS all -access 71 NFL game rewind

69 The PlayStation view 720 per year ouch Yeah,

but then again when you break out my cable bill,

you know, I'm really curious. Let's do some fun

math right now I pay about 200 bucks a month

for the best internet possible Like I'm super

fast up super fast down and I have like I think

the second best cable package they have I am

paying $200 a year It would almost be worth it

to switch to some of these services But unfortunately

because I'm in Canada and contact restrictions

because of geo blocking and all that shit Don't

know I still have to pay for internet. That's

another factor. They don't necessarily bring

into all these costs either Is what's your provider

unless you have fast internet streaming isn't

really fucking worth your time But then again

everybody now is on cable. I can't think of anybody

who's on Hell do they even still have what? What

was the internet called where you were it was

it wasn't dial -up. It was on the phone satellite

That's satellite else What was that Steve T1

line? Not T1. It was something else. I can't

remember. It was like PP only DSL do people still

have DSL? Yeah, it still exists The thing is

is AT &T is the only one that offers it. They

do have three different Well, they have multiple

versions if they don't have it in your area Then

what happens is You can get up to 768 kilobyte

download speeds Which is rather pathetic And

then the because I only know this because I've

done research on it with Because you know last

year we moved with this house and everything

and all we had was Comcast available and then

AT &T opened up and to begin with we were only

allowed the 768 or the 1 .5 megabyte download

and then After they got U -verse in the area,

we were allowed to get anywhere between 12, 16,

and 18. Then they had the option for 24 in some

areas, but we only could get as high as 18. I

still get faster with my Comcast one, which is

25. I only pay $29 .99 for my internet for a

year. For mine, because of my service, I have

unlimited up. Unlimited down and it's funny though

the the cable guy I spoke to about a week ago

before we got some new services added to our

account He was like well, I can sell you this

500 gigabyte thing because you'll never go Looking

at your data over the past few months You've

never gone over it and it's funny because I won

that Xbox one from Doritos and Mountain Dew Which

means I had to back up all my data from the Xbox

live clouds And I posted this on Twitter, Steve,

and you liked it. I downloaded 500 gigabytes

in just a little under a day. I don't see how

you could do that. Oh, man. Both my Xboxes are

fucking full right now with like two and a half

terabytes of games on. And I'm surprised Rogers,

which is my service provider, hasn't called me

up saying, Mike, what are you doing? You know

and because the internet now people use it for

so much I don't see how you cannot offer unlimited

but I guess companies count on you to do overage

if you fuck up or something and I know a lot

of the providers suspended The bandwidth cap

yeah in Canada they're starting to get rid of

it Or you pay for a different tier because I

know a lot of traffic internet traffic in the

u .s Is made up of streaming services now. I

think like Netflix is something like 30 or 40

percent of net traffic right now Mm -hmm, that's

insane But I guess it just it shows you the future

that we're kind of moving towards it happened

for quite some time, which I'm really excited

for but The cable networks aren't necessarily

excited for it No, but I mean if they would let

people choose what they want to get I think it

would help Well, I know right now once again,

they bring up Canada. There's this thing before

the CRTC, which is the Canadian television Radio

Commission or something like that Where they're

trying to put through some kind of a thing where

you can pick and choose what channels you want

in your individual cable pack For example if

I wanted say ESPN EBC's local affiliate, Fox,

and EBS or something. That's all I wanted. I

could do that. Whereas I don't need the Home

and Garden channel, nor do I need the NASCAR

channel or something like that, right? If that

could happen, my cable bill would drop so dramatically.

I can tell you, there are channels I have. I've

got over like 300. I don't think me and Blair

watch more than maybe 30 of them. I think that's

typical for anybody though. I honestly don't

think people watch a lot of regular TV channels.

I think there's those 30 set channels and you

pretty much watch just that. Yeah, I mean I can

almost name every single channel I watch. I mean

I myself right now I watch maybe five channels

with any degree of regularity, otherwise I DVR

it or I stream it. Yeah. I mean, here we have

in Louisville, Kentucky, we have one channel

that is the, the cable providers channel. Uh,

it's basically all, but it's basically news and

whatever else. But then there's like, like I

could do without all the stupid shopping networks.

Like home shopping network and QVC and there's

like 20 survived now. I know there's like 20

of them. Yeah and You know stuff like when you

get into like the upper 90s It's like all quote

-unquote local programming and don't get me wrong,

you know Watched Wayne's world. I know what it

is like to see public access and you know try

to succeed but most of these local programming

channels It's all politics and I just don't care.

So that's like four or five channels. I could

lose What I like because local television stations

local content people struggle for that see in

the States you're spoiled for it in Canada We

have we do have local content, but not that much

yeah actually rather jealous that you get that

and you're right though a lot of local content

is politics when i worked for a television station

up here in canada it was uh channel 53 up in

owen sound and i worked on three or four political

shows we had three or four political shows a

talk show and hockey other than that it was nothing

but local politics which is great for people

to interact with their local members of their

municipal government But I could use a Wayne's

world. I could use something a little bit more

fun and lighthearted. Are you going to fix these

sidewalks, sir? The other thing that I would

love to be able to do is to find... local channel

or like my my local channels here actually have

like one and two and three sub channels where

they put other conflict we have something called

retro TV and me TV where they show like all the

old like 70s and 80s shows like every Saturday

night on me TV I can watch two episodes of 1966

Batman on television So what I would love for

these channels to do instead of interrupting

agent Carter and have it air at 1 a .m. Actually

have it on the channel at the time and put the

stupid college basketball or football game on

the sub channel And that all comes down to money

Although in Canada, it's ten times worse for

example Let's say, for example, ABC. Agent Carter's

a great example. There are several different

networks in Canada. There's channels that are

owned by Rogers, which is a big media channel

up here. There's Bell. They own a bunch. And

CBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, whatever.

So there's a few providers. Different channels

or different companies will buy different Shows

like agent Carter, for example, right? And we

have to take the American feed of That channel.

So let's say our closest local one is Detroit

or Buffalo So we grab those ones off there. But

the thing is we get the content, but we don't

get any of the commercials so let's say Guys

are showing the basketball game that night but

it's available somewhere else. Odds are, we'll

get the stupid basketball game as opposed to

the TV show that we made. Sometimes, not all

the time. I've seen it happen a few times. But

it always bugged me, especially with Super Bowl

time, because we never see the same trailers

you do. Or commercials, but then again, that's

what YouTube for cuz honestly the second it airs.

It's on YouTube anyway Yeah, I mean and see that's

the other thing with television nowadays since

this has kind of become the whole you know the

whole discussion here is TV is that Why not just

have the Super Bowl on the internet? I know they

want the money from the network and whatever

else of whoever has I know I know I understand

that but like What does it matter watching Super

Bowl commercials? I mean the internet basically

takes the fun out of sitting there waiting for

the commercials or I mean if you if you're into

the game great, but you know I mean all of the

film trailers last year that premiered during

the Super Bowl. I saw him on my 15 minutes Yeah,

I saw online within like an hour of them premiering,

you know Like I remember I was waiting there

for transformers the age of extinction to show

up. Mm -hmm. All right It just premiered on TV

didn't see it because Canada so I'll just wait

20 minutes I'll go make myself a cup of coffee

or something. You know, I'm back and there it

is. Although think about this I wonder if television

Networks because the NFL is huge money and it

makes money off of Xbox and PS Whatever. I wonder

how much money they could make if they had an

internet only trailers You could only see this

if you have the ESPN app or something Just thinking,

because you know what? It doesn't cost Marvel

or Paranaut any more money to cut a trailer than

it does, you know, basically here. Get in a room,

edit something, here's your daily pay plus whatever.

Yeah. Not like they're going out and shooting

new footage. Just an idea. Yeah. And you know

what? To throw everything back to like 20 minutes

ago, I realized... Now that we're not old grumpy

old men, this has actually turned out really

good. I'm just saying, this is actually a really

good conversation, so I'm glad that person bitched

at us. Can you hear me smiling? Because I am.

I can tell. Oh yeah. So, um... I think... We'll

get to the questions that we'll ask and then

hopefully get an answer to next week. What are

some tech gadgets that you'd like to have if

they existed? Whether it be stuff that's from

some TV series or a movie like Back to the Future.

Stuff like that. And then what is your favorite

TV show that's returned so far? Tech gadgets.

Hardest would be awesome, but I'm guessing that

counts as a vehicle. Replicator from Star Trek.

Yeah, probably number one on my list, too. Or

holodeck. See you fuckers later. They're going

to pretend I'm going to I'm just going to go

to sleep. And as far as I know, when I wake up,

it's all real. Yeah. Oh god. Who needs porn sites

when you have the holodeck? Damn right! They

actually will reach out and touch you. Here's

a quarter, call somebody over here. Drop the

beat. Alrighty. Yeah, that went down a dark road

again. You're welcome. Go watch the Avengers

2 second teaser. There was a lot of new footage.

What's that? There was a lot of new footage.

There was a lot of new footage. Yeah. People

getting electrocuted and stuff. And so... Brother

Witch taking over the Hulk. Yeah. As far as I

can tell. Hulk versus Hulk Buster. That's one

thing I cannot wait for for Age of Ultron is

seeing Hulk versus Hulkbuster. I got a press

release from Hasbro a couple days ago about some

of the new Age of Ultron toys. I've got such

a chub for that Hulkbuster. I think it's called

the Tech Titan toys. It's like 30, 40 bucks.

but oh my god this thing looks so cool they also

have these other things where it's you can build

this you can build your own playset of avengers

tower and there's like different things you can

get like tony stark's lab or the hulk's containment

unit you can land like a quinjet there the figures

are only 2 .5 inches which i'm not a huge fan

of the new scale but it looks really freaking

badass But yeah, Age of Ultron trailer, fucking

sick, man. So stoked for May 1st. I can't wait.

I saw a video, I just saw it today actually,

it's probably a few months old, but somebody

put together some animation and a voiceover for

Ultron saying other Disney lines and making them

even more creepy since the song in the trailers

is from Pinocchio. It's hilarious. You'll have

to like that. Yeah. So if you'd like to interact
