About this Episode

Mike and Steve welcome Doug Abel from Talkin' Bout My Generation for a crossover episode covering San Diego Comic-Con 2016. Doug spent all five days at the convention and discusses its evolution since his first visit in 1991, celebrity sightings in costume (including Adam Savage, Orlando Bloom, and Tom Hiddleston), booth experiences like Fear the Walking Dead x Jack in the Box and South Park's 20th anniversary, and major trailer reveals including Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Star Trek: Discovery, and the animated Killing Joke film. The hosts break down the Star Trek: Discovery acronym controversy, Wonder Woman's visual style compared to DC's darker tone, and discuss Bruce Timm's creative intent behind the controversial Bruce Wayne and Batgirl relationship scene in the Killing Joke adaptation.

About My Generation. I am one of your hosts,

TF2 and Mike from the GeekCast Radio Network.

Also joining me from the GeekCast Radio Network

is the other co -creator, Steve Megatron. Hello.

Hello. And we are here to talk about Send You

Comic Con 2016. And you might be wondering, wait,

this is Talking About My Generation. Where the

hell is Doug? Well, Doug's been asleep for the

last 12 hours because he spent All five days

at comic -con this year and you know, he's pretty

much turned into a undead zombie. He's a vegetable

He's a he's a purpley pickled egg or something

or other so what we're doing here this is talking

about my generation episode 3 This is also going

to be a special Wednesday or Thursday episode

of Altered Geek over on the GeekCast Radio Network,

a huge giant crossover. We're here to talk about

San Diego Comic Con 2016. In general, Steve,

what is your overall opinion of the event that

happens in San Diego each year during the summer,

in brief summary? Well, I mean, you're saying

as far as like the Just the event itself, what

it covers, but just the whole process and the

whole potential experience if we ever eventually

get to go. Well, I technically got to go if you

count watching it on Comic -Con HQ, which funny

enough was something we talked about last year

on Altered Geek, where I was saying, you know

what would be nice about this time of year? I

was like having... the ability to watch it online

for those that cannot go. And sure enough, they

had a lot of the panel stuff on there, but it

depended on what site you went to. But that aside,

no, I mean, I love the announcements, the geeky

announcements that come out every year from Comic

-Con, the trailers, the panels. I could give

less about the commentaries that are in between

each. from these various websites, but no, I

mean, I look forward to mostly to the trailers

of television and of film. Right, and we'll talk

about those in a little bit. Now Doug has been

going to Comic -Con for 25, 26 years now. This

was 25 years for me. Oh, this is 25 years. I'm

not gonna ask you your overall because your overall

would take... Seven hours to get through 25 years,

but what I will ask you is Compare your first

ever comic -con to this year and what the differences

are To the beginning to what it is now as far

as the growth overall of the convention. Okay.

Well, let me first off start Comic -con it's

not about comics anymore. It has not been about

comics for probably the last ten years There

are comics don't get me wrong I actually had

a very nice conversation this year with with

Chuck Rosansky about this and We kind of talked

back and forth about how comics are kind of falling

by the wayside unfortunately It is the very first

year that I went in 1991 My dad and I we walked

into the convention center, and we walked the

entire floor in a day And there was just so much

to see my father actually put on they had Battletoads

And he put on this big Battletoads head and we

got a Polaroid picture of him standing there

doing a muscle pose wearing a Battletoads head.

And it was the most goofy thing I think I've

ever seen. But I still have that picture somewhere

and it was enjoyable. You could walk the floor.

You could buy a ticket that day. As a matter

of fact, it wasn't waiting, you know, and immediately

going, shit, tickets are sold out two hours after

they went on sale. Right, you know it's it's

changed that said It's in a lot of ways. It's

gotten more fun because there's more of a camaraderie.

It's it's not just back then geek used to be

a four -letter word and By that I mean that it

was a very dirty word if you were a geek If you

were nerdy, you know, you were not accepted.

You read comic books. Oh, my God. You dirty geek.

Yeah. And now now being a geek is, you know,

we finally gotten our we finally have the we

finally rule when you look at this. Comic Con

means more to San Diego than sports and San Diego

Chargers. OK, we the nerds of the geeks of the

world. Mean more than the jocks do well finally

and honestly with with the sports in San Diego

That's that's not surprising considering the

team that's out all the teams that are out in

San Diego Yeah, I mean we've had we've had Two

teams that have gone one gun to the World Series

twice couldn't do a damn thing lost got swept

Chargers went to the Super Bowl and completely

embarrassed themselves. Yes, so But we have hockey.

We have the San Diego goals. We've had the San

Diego Soccer's. Hey. Yeah, exactly. You know,

they're minor league teams. What can you say?

But in short, you know, San Diego, it's Comic

Con is it is still the big daddy and everybody

wants to go. Everybody enjoys it. It's yes, it's

wall to wall people. Yes, it's wall to wall bad

B .O. But it all in all the people who were there

everybody kind of just nerds out together is

the best way to describe it. Everybody's cool

with each other. That's good. So we're going

to take a quick break. You're going to hear some

sort of snippet from something. You're either

going to hear a trailer from one of the trailer

reveals or you're going to hear a snippet from

one of the panels of audio that Doug grabbed.

We'll be back on talking about my generation

altered geek. sdcc twenty sixteen after this

when I was writing it, and Paul Rugga, the great

writer for the show, had written the little ditty

with the planets with the Uranus dad. So I took

it out. So I'm going to sing it to you. This

is the original version of Planets and the original

ending to the song which they made. And it's

part of a vast interplanetary system with everyone

revolving around the sun. With Mercury between

us, and after that comes Venus, and still the

solar system's just begun. Past the earth runs

towards the stars, where we find planet Mars,

which is over 50 million miles away. After the

rain and powder, and our Jupiter and Saturn,

the rain has dipped the food of so we shake all

together. It's a great big universe, and everyone's

a part of it. No one knows just where the end

has started. We all live here together. It's

our home forever. It's a small world. All right,

folks, we hope you enjoyed that snippet into

the life of Comic -Con. And now we have the Unabled

Body Comic -Con Report. So this is about what

Doug saw, what he experienced this year at SDCC,

any kind of panels you went to. What was the

first thing that you were able to do? Because

you go all five days. Well, you go all five days.

And it would take us two or three or four hours

to get through all five days. What's the first

thing every year you normally do on Wednesday

night preview night? Well, it's kind of normally

we kind of just walk the floor and see if there's

any Any exclusives that we want to get because

that's usually the best time to go and get it

Because most of the places still have exclusives

Right. So with that in mind, I decided that I

would start my my journey over to the IDW booth

Yeah, cuz You know, somebody on this podcast

asking me about. Hey, wait a second. Hey, wait

a second here. I asked you once. I said, if you're

there and it's there, can you grab it? You know

I said on I said on Twitter and Facebook Very

rarely if ever do I ask anybody any one of my

friends going to any convention? To get me crap

because I want them to go to the convention and

have a good time But I figure Doug's an old pro

at this he's been doing this for 25 years One

little stop isn't gonna kill his entire five

-day weekend Let me tell you what happened with

that stop too because I had the hardest time

trying to find IDW the way that the floor is

kind of laid out is that They try to put all

the publishers kind of right by each other and

then like the major studios off to one side You

know golden and silver age comics and modern

comics off to another side and then way down

at the other end they put like the game publishers,

so you have like Nintendo and blizzard and so

forth over on the far end. Well, so I'm walking

through the publishers on one Where the hell

is IDW? I'm pulling up everything I can possibly

find in the Comic Con app and the book that lays

it out for the exhibitors. I'm having the hardest

time. My wife all of a sudden goes, hey, isn't

that it right there? Literally. So I walk over

and I go up and I ask the guys, you know, I'm

trying to get in line and they're going, well,

yeah, we kind of have a line. I'm like, no, no,

that's fine. I want to get in line. Can you tell

me if you have the lithographs? And he goes,

well, we have some. Which one are you looking

for? Immediately, I'm going, oh, shit, I'm going

to hear from Mike if they don't have it. It's

Wednesday night. They should have this little.

Yeah. Luckily enough, they had it. And so I get

in line and I go to buy them. And as I'm paying

for them, they go, oh, by the way, the guys who

did the artwork for this are citing right behind

the booth. I'm like. Well, okay, I'll go get

it signed, you know And you messaged me asking

hey, do you want this sign? And my first thought

was sure if it doesn't cost anything extra because

now I'm not saying anything about any of the

IDW guys at all But everybody knows going to

conventions certain people will charge for their

signature. So, you know And that's the things

that most of the time. Here's the way that a

lot of that works is Generally if you buy something

from the booth, and they're there signing they'll

sign it for you usually for free Right not always,

but you know yeah Yeah, if you're buying from

them most of the time they will You know so what

they don't want to do is they don't want to have

you taking up You know two hours of signing all

their other crap which right that's fair So I

go around the booth I walk behind the booth and

I get in line and as I'm standing there I I see

you know I see Santa Luco there. I see two other

guys and I'm like, OK, and I walk him up. I'm

holding these lithographs and the first two guys

go here. Give that to us. You want it signed?

I says, OK. I have to be honest, I did not. I

do not know the artist like if you look for me,

I can look at voice actors and I can go, OK,

that's Jess Harnell. That's, you know. Rob Paulson,

That's Greg Griffin, and so forth. I know that.

But the artists for artists and writers for a

lot of the comic books, I simply don't know.

I know the names. Yeah. And plus, you're not

really reading a lot of the IDW stuff, right?

Right. So I mean, you know, that's that's completely

understandable. So essentially what myself and

our buddy Joe Reed got was one litho each with

Eastman. uh... waltz curnaut and santa luco signatures

everybody knows who the hell kevin eastman is

he's the he's you know part one of the granddaddy

of them all tmnt team uh... bobby curnaut is

the editor of the comic tom waltz is the writer

uh... on most of it on most of the things and

and yeah no this thing looks absolutely epic

what this lithograph is folks is they took There

was a whole section of the TMNT comic last year,

issues 45 to 50, that Santalucco did an all interconnected

cover. So when you buy the comics individually,

you see shades of what this is supposed to be.

This lithograph is everything connected together

to tell you one giant story of this epic... Five

issues of the comic because during these five

issues Donatello is dead Shredder is Shredder

is about to win that kind of thing so But this

when they originally announced this I'm like,

oh that would be awesome to have because they

announced this way before SEC see this this this

litho has been floating around For a while I

forget which convention it originally debuted

at but I think it was it might have been SDCC

last year Yeah, I think it was yeah, I don't

know I'm sure they still obviously they still

had extras, but yeah, thank you so much for that

But yeah, this is this Litho is just gonna be

amazing. Absolutely Yeah, I and be honest. I

was really shocked when they go. Oh, yeah, by

the way at the end there is Kevin Eastman Oh

my god, I know who Kevin Eastman is okay that

what I know You know come on any child of the

80s if you watch TMNT you knew Kevin Eastman

was Exactly yes, exactly and the other funny

thing is when you said when you message me saying

oh my god Kevin Eastman just son yours and Joe's

lithos I'm like did you ask him for an interview?

It's almost kind of the wrong place to ask them

anyway, yeah, but still No, I I do have some

I do have some interview Tied up which we will

discuss once we actually have them on and and

do that We'll talk about that off air. So Absolutely

All right. So what else did you see through Thursday

through Sunday? My god We saw we saw scorpion

We went to the big bang writers panel Wow, we

saw Bernadette Who I will tell you that is not

her real voice on TV just in case anybody hasn't

figured that out It is yeah, it's not quite as

nasal. She's no Yeah, and I will tell you she

is just as adorable in person as she is on TV

Just that cute bubbly personality that carries

through that is her to to a lot of extent Yeah,

the funny thing with that is I knew that the

high -pitchy Bernadette voice on on TV wasn't

Melissa but I also knew it was also part of her

because she had, I forget which con it was, there's

a video, I'll have to find it, there's a video

floating around online about a Big Bang Theory

panel, it might have been an SDCC, this is from

a couple of years ago, where they're talking

about the show and the writing and they start

talking about certain characters and one of the

audience members is dressed up like Leia did.

In written Jedi the same below. What is it? What's

that stupid character? What's that costume's

name? Slave Leia? Slave Leia? No, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, this person quotes

the famous lines from Jedi and Bernadette is

like, dude, who are you? takes off the mask,

someone who loves you, and it's friggin' Johnny

Galecki in the bush. He basically crashed the

panel. That happens more often than you'd think

with a lot of these guys. Okay, Princess Leia

in disguise. My question is, the people or the

players, I'm sorry I'm so nervous, the cast,

are they like our characters? Are the cast like,

are we like our characters? Well, Mayim in real

life is a neuroscientist and she plays one on

the show. That's not an acceptable answer. Wow,

okay, excuse me It's not an acceptable answer

Really who are you reveal yourself? Someone who

loves you I see stories all the time of certain

people dressing up as certain characters and

walking around just And I think the reason why

they do it is not to insult other cosplayers

It's just so they can have so they can have the

comic con experience without being ambushed Exactly

that freedom to actually experience the con Well,

let me give you an example of one that actually

happened this year every year for the past We've

got probably five or six years at least Adam

Savage shows up at Comic Con And he has a couple

of costumes that he does one. He does so that

he can walk around the convention unhindered,

you know, without people bothering him. Another

one that he just dresses up kind of for fun.

Well, last year and this year he brought along

other people. He actually had Orlando Bloom with

him at one point. He had Conan O 'Brien running

around with him at one point, and he had Alton

Brown running around with him. Now. But when

he was he was with Alton Brown, they dressed

up like the like the two guys in the white suits

from Matrix Revolutions. I think it was right.

So they were running around dressed up. They

had like the white dreads on their hair. And,

you know, it looked absolutely ridiculous. But

if you looked at it and you looked at them hard,

you could recognize who they were. But if you

weren't really paying attention, they'd just

go right past. You'd be like, OK. Last year,

for example, and I know I'm going back to last

year, but that's fine My wife and I were walking

around on the floor. We happen to look and I

go Hey, and we literally walk past this guy and

I looked out I go man. That's a really good Loki

outfit Turns out damn it. It was Tom Hiddleston

dressed up as frickin Loki Yeah, it was mr. T.

It was mr. Taylor Swift. Yeah. Well, it's funny

because Terry strong was running around his Harley

Quinn Yes, and surprise. Oh, yeah, she always

looks pretty good. Yeah, you know Which that

brings me to you kind of another thing that I

saw I went I have to kind of relive this just

a little bit for everybody Good. My wife and

I went and saw on Saturday We sat for three hours

in one particular room to see quick draw cartoon

voices one and then WWE and scooby -doo curse

of the speed demon Coming out with another one.

That's why Rocksteady was there For those that

don't know behind the scenes again here Doug

was sending me pictures of shit from comic -con.

So This picture he sent me he's like Who it is

and I'm looking and I'm looking and I don't notice

course I had just like in Steve knows this on

You know very well when I first wake up from

something when I first wake up in the morning

and stuff I barely noticed shit half the time.

So I'm looking at this picture. I'm like, oh,

hey, it's Rocksteady It's Seamus from W. What's

he doing there? Yeah, well turns out that he

and Paige from WWE were there to promote their

promote the Scooby Doo WWE crossover, which I'm

not quite sure how they're pulling this off,

but they had all sorts of characters mixed in

here from WWE. They had Seamus. They had the

Undertaker. They had Dusty Rhodes and Dusty Rhodes

actually has probably one of the best lines of

the entire thing that I did the like three or

four clips that they showed us. He says, it's

time to get funky like a monkey. And I went,

OK, yeah, I like that one. But throughout the

panel like gray Griffin is there and oh my god.

She's so cute. She is adorable I actually got

a hug from her. I will admit that I had a t -shirt

that I made for her son and her son Absolutely

loved it. So I'm happy for that but anyway, we

were there and we see we see Matthew Lillard

and Paige and some kid gets up and asks Paige

What's your favorite move? And Paige goes mine

and she goes, well, I was going to ask Seamus.

No, it's it's mine. He likes mine the best. And

so Matthew Leonard goes, well, what's your move?

And she goes, well, it's a submission move here.

I'll show you. And he's like, oh, no. I got next,

you know, next slammed in front of my kids and

had to try and explain that. You know, I'm not

going to be getting up here and having you try

to do any moves on me. So the audience is like,

yes, yes, yes. The audience goes nuts. So he

finally we the audience finally coerces him to

get up on stage and let Paige do her submission

move, which I. For those that don't know, it's

called the page turner. Yes. And to me, it looked

like the old school figure four leg lock. OK,

this tells you how far back in WWE history I

go. Yeah, it's a type of that but it's completely

different Yeah, it uses part of the figure four

but it's not the figure four Well, they they

get her they get Matthew Lillard and Paige up

on the table on the stage They're probably lifted

up about about, you know, seven or eight feet

up off the ground floor here, right? Yeah, and

she's here doing this twist Gray took a picture

of it and I managed to grab a copy of it and

post it up. It is the most hilarious damn thing

I think I've ever seen. Matthew Lillard is twisted

around on his stomach and Shavis is trying to

catch him to prepare to prevent him from falling

off the table. Oh, man, I. Both my wife and I

were dying of laughter and I really wish I'd

gotten video of it because it was just too damn

funny to pass up. It was probably the best thing

I saw the entire weekend and that and that's

like pushing it because there's a few things

that were slightly, you know, right there with

it like the Animaniacs live panel. That was that

was incredible there as well. We had Rob Paulson,

we had Tress McNeil, we had. Jess Harnell and

Randy Rogel basically laying out and doing songs

from the Animaniacs. Right. Yeah. And, you know,

it wasn't it wasn't funny necessarily, but it

was like I watched it and I immediately felt

like I was sitting in front of the TV, you know,

after I'd come home from school watching watching

these cartoons again. Right. Oh, absolutely.

It was total time turner. Yeah, I just recently

turned my girl Jen on to I finally got her after

bugging her and bugging her Finally got her to

listen to two or three different rock sugar songs,

and I'm like look babe. That's That's wacko.

That's that's grim gloom from the 70. That's

Jess Harnell. She's like, I now have a new found

respect for Jess. Well, and it's funny because

if anybody if you have not seen what Jess Harnell

looks like, he actually he actually made a comment

as he's standing up there on stage. He goes,

yeah, people don't realize that I that I wacko.

He goes, I look like somebody from Whitesnake,

so they mistake me for that all the time. He's

got this long curly hair. He's wearing sunglasses,

and he always has a baseball cap on and he looks

kind of scruffy He looks like a typical rocker.

Yeah, he does. That's the beauty of a voice actor.

Nobody knows Yeah, nobody knows until until they

pop out the voice. Nobody knows yeah Was there

anything else that? That you guys that you and

your wife saw that you want to talk about. Oh,

God. There's there was just so much to see. You

know, my wife seeing my wife recognizing Kevin

Eastman on, you know, we were sitting in a panel

and she's just like, hey, is that Kevin Eastman

over there? I'm like, oh, my God, my wife is

becoming a geek. Yeah. I know it's a little thing,

but, you know, hey. It's the little things that

count. So yeah, I mean that was it I In some

ways, I wish we had gotten into some of the bigger

panels. I I missed out on the MacGyver panel

because We wanted to go see something else that

happened in another room and I forget what it

happened like the same time as a MacGyver panel

we missed out on the Supergirl and Flash panels

because those were just crazy in ballroom 20

And basically anything that happened in Hall

H, we kind of looked at each other. We said,

look, unless we're camping out from right at

the start, we're not getting there. You know,

it's that's just the way it was. People camped

out and you spent all day in Hall H to see whatever

you wanted to see in Hall H. You know, so. I

honestly think, and I don't know what they're

going to do for next year, we can talk about

that at the end of the show, but I honestly think

if it's going to stay in San Diego, because I

know there was a news item last year saying,

oh, San Diego Comic -Con stays in San Diego until

2018. So if they're going to continue to stay

in San Diego, I almost think Hall H should just

be a completely separate experience from the

rest of the con. You just can't do everything

plus anything that happens at Hall H. It's just

not friggin' possible. I am gonna bring up one

thing that was kind of a negative this year.

It was a big, big thing for a lot of people.

This year they started with these RFID badges.

Basically they put a radio frequency chip inside

the badges. Instead of them being like a paper

badge that had a hologram put into it prevent

counterfeiting because People were paying on

eBay Almost 10 grand for a four -day badge. Oh

Yeah, yeah, and stupid I'll tell you I looked

at it and I kind of went, you know 10 grand But

you know, I can't that's a down payment. It's

part of a down payment of a house I mean that

just it to me. That's like I'll go next year

Yeah, and like I said, you know, okay most of

these big events any any kind of big vacation

whether it's a whether it's a San Diego Comic

Con or whether it's a Disneyland whether it's

a Disney World You have to pick and plan what

you want to do. You're not gonna be able to do

everything like I remember as a kid going to

Disney World several different times. I went

when I was three and six and nine, I think, when

I was a kid. Back then, we could do everything

in the Magic Kingdom and Epcot in the 80s at

Disney World in about a week. Nowadays, since

they've expanded so much, you can't do that anymore.

Same thing with sending it to Comic -Con. I am

sorry. That convention is awesome, but it is

not worth $10 ,000 frigging dollars. It's just

not. I mean, it's a great, amazing, one of the

best comic conventions, or one of the best conventions

that we have in this country. But just to get

a four -day pass, there's no way in hell. You

know, between that, I understand why people are

counterfeiting, obviously, because if they're

going for that much online, you know, got to

help us for why the hackers, you know, why the

hackers and the counterfeiters aren't doing it.

It's it's cheap for them to try. But because

of that RFID chip, it caused a huge amount of

backup for anybody going in and out of the convention

center. What you had to do every time you went

in the front doors you had to scan your badge

Every time you left you had to scan your badge

And while it's kind of quick you have to imagine

a hundred and thirty thousand people Going to

the front doors and having to beep on each and

every time they went in and out Oh dear lord,

it was a pain in the ass is painting the ass

going in at the very beginning in the morning

Are they gonna do this again next year? I would

assume to stop hackers probably probably so they're

gonna start doing this every year now, so because

of this before we move on let me ask you Doug

is there Is that other than getting food or going

to your car to drop off stuff? Is there any reason

really why? during the day that you should even

be leaving the convention center unless you're

going home. Well, actually, yes. Yes, there is.

OK. Outside the convention center because there

is stuff that spills outside of it. Their Fox

and FX had a really cool thing outside where

they had stuff from Archer that they have these

like really cool artworks. They had like chairs

and stuff that you go to sit in. They had. This

they have this wall that you could actually go

and climb up And then you'd come across this

top of this wall after you got up the top And

then they would have you actually leap off onto

one of these stunt bags like these big air pillows

that you see stuntmen jump off of You know, they

jump off 20 30 feet and land on the pillow They

have that sort of stuff for you to go and do

for free So that was stuff getting people outside

of the convention center, which kind of helped

uh... across the way over behind petco park they

had a ferris wheel they had uh... razor uh...

razor who does mice and gaming components everything

they were giving away stuff left and right uh...

they had that one of the more odd things of the

convention that they had mixed together was Fear

the Walking Dead and Jack in the Box. I'm not

sure. Wait, wait, wait. You mean like Jack in

the Box, like the restaurant Jack in the Box?

Yes. Yes. OK, so now all I can think of is zombies

popping out of Jack in the Boxes. Well, that's

kind of what it was. You could actually go up.

They had this little Jack in the Box that was

there. So you could go up and you could order

things. And it was basically a truncated menu.

So you can only order like I want to say like

three or four different kinds of burgers there.

And you can order like fries and, you know, fries

on a drink type of thing. But that was basically

it. That was all you could get there. Previous

years, Carl's Jr. did something like that where

they had you could get you could get a double

Western bacon cheeseburger or you could get a

chicken sandwich or you could get, you know,

a famous star. And they were all pretty much

They cooked them all right there in the truck.

They brought it to you. You got a drink. You

were good to go. You know, and it was it was.

Yeah, it was a little bit more than you pay for

going to the actual Carl's Jr. or Jack in the

Box restaurant. But it was right there. You didn't

have to go, you know, you didn't have to get

on a shuttle bus to take it three, you know,

you know, 13 or 14 blocks away type of thing

to go get a Jack in the Box burger. So you pay

for convenience. They also had outside they had

South Park. They did their this is 20 years of

South Park. So they had this big huge display

that ran Yeah, I know. I'm not a huge fan of

South Park myself No, I think it's cool that

they're you know, they're celebrating 20 years

of their show. That's awesome Oh, yeah, but I

mean they had this huge run of stuff that you

could go through and you could look at South

Park characters and they had clips from from

over the 20 years they had Thing we could actually

go and demo the new South Park fractured, but

whole video game They had one of the more cool

things for it was they actually had the school

bus that you see at the very beginning and they

had all the kids on there and they had a less

less claypool character who's Stuck to the side

of the school bus playing a playing a banjo or

a bass or whatever was that he's supposed to

be playing So that was kind of fun and at the

very far end of that they had Amazon had showed

up and they were promoting the new The new series

on Amazon Prime instant video of the man in the

high castle and then the new Thunderbirds or

go series So they had stuff outside of the convention

to do They also know I almost forgot nerd our

Comic -con HQ had their booth over by the FX

and Hilton Bayfront So you could actually go

and see them doing live stream events right there

when they were talking and doing interviews with

people. Oh, cool. So, you know, this is all stuff

that you don't have to have a badge to go down

and experience. So even if you aren't, even if

you don't have the comic con badge, you can still

go down and spend the entire day down there and

have fun and see stuff and experience stuff that

comic con goers are experiencing. Yeah, very

cool, very cool. Alright, we're gonna take another

quick break and then we're to come back with

the SDCC news roundup after this Computer how

do I put the Joker in Arkham Asylum quickest

route no freeways Computer do you hear me? Master

Bruce, I have just taken away your computer privileges.

Gasp! Sir, it's time for you to stop this unhealthy

behavior. You can't spend the rest of your life

alone, dressed in black, and staying up all night.

Good night, Alfred. Sir, it's morning. You need

to take responsibility for your life, and it

starts by raising your son. I'm sorry. I literally

have no idea what you're talking about. The young

orphan you adopted at the gala. I thought I was

being sarcastic. Hello secret camera Oh my gosh,

oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh,

oh my gosh Batman whoa, you're darn right. Whoa.

Wait, does Batman live in Bruce Wayne's basement?

No, Bruce Wayne lives in Batman's attic Don't

touch that I like that one. That one is culturally

insensitive. What do we think of this? Absolutely

not. Wait, what's that one there? I love it.

My only trouble is his pants are just a little

tight. I got an idea. It's better. Now I'm free.

Now I'm moving. Come on, Batman. Let's get grooving.

I can only look you in the eyes right now. Are

you ready to follow Batman and maybe learn a

few life lessons along the way? I sure am. But

first, where's the seat belt? The first lesson

is... Life doesn't give you seatbelts. Alfred,

I have incredible reflexes. Oh! Oh my goodness!

I am so sorry! Soon as I get back to the Batcave,

I will make sure that Alfred puts seatbelts on

there. But for the time being, I'm just gonna

put my arm right here, and we're just gonna gently

ease outta here. Real gentle -like. Hey, computer!

I'm home! What is the password? Na -na -na -na

-na -na -na Batman! Thank you. I love it. There

is a stranger who comes to this village from

the sea. He comes in the winter when people are

hungry and he brings fish. He comes on the king

tide. That was last night. Tuck? I believe that

an enemy is coming from far away. I'm looking

for warriors. This stranger. Others like him.

I'm building an alliance to defend us. It's very

important that I see this man. Barry Allen. Bruce

Wayne. You said that like it explains why there's

a total stranger sitting in the dark in my second

favorite chair. He said he'll fight with us?

More or less. More more or more less Probably

more less he said no he said no Look man. I don't

know who you are, but whoever you're looking

for So you're fast. That feels like an oversimplification.

I'm putting together a team. People with special

abilities. You see, I believe enemies are coming.

Stop right there. I'm in. You are? Just like

that? Yeah. I... I need... friends. Great. Can

I keep this? Alright folks, we are back and we're

here to talk about the trailers, the panels,

everything that we saw online come out of San

Diego Comic -Con. I think the first thing we

ought to start with is television because we

saw Arrow training the other Super Friends, which

is meh for season five for me. Steve, what did

you think of the Arrow trailer? I mean it showed

the new the new trainees more or less coming

in but other than that it really didn't do nothing

for me because I don't know it my problem with

a lot of these teasers for some of these shows

are they spend more time showing stuff we've

already seen from like the current season over

just showing us something new yeah Doug, what

did you think of the Arrow trailer overall? Well,

I kind of liked it for what I saw, but I'm kind

of like, damn it, there's spoilers in this because

I'm still watching season one of Arrow. I just

got started, so I apologize. Yeah. Doug's trying

to catch up. OK, so Arrow for me, like I said,

it was all right. And as I've said on Altered

Geek, I haven't said it too much and talk about

my generation, but as I've said on Altered Geek,

Arrow is hit, Steve and I have talked about this,

Arrow is hit or miss. seasons one and two were

epic awesome and great there may have been one

or two episodes in each of season one and two

that are there season three you might as well

have brought in Batman that's all I'll say about

that season four again it went back to depending

on the episode that you're watching that week

whether it's good or bad and season five when

I saw the trailer I just thought okay so winner

uh... uh... janna and and say i'm going to show

up and in glee to we will be big week now uh...

well felt like they didn't smallville here you

go uh... so the extra lessons steve brought up

about the whole thing of showing everything in

the first two years and only one minute and something

seconds of of the third year let's talk about

fox i mean fox And Gotham Season 3. So the Gotham

Season 3 trailer was more of a Season 1, Season

2 highlight reel for 3 minutes and 56 seconds.

The last minute and 14 seconds or whatever it

is actually showed us stuff from Season 3. So

Steve, out of the Season 3 stuff you saw, is

it enticing you to keep watching Gotham or no?

I mean honestly, I didn't really see anything

I didn't expect to see. Like, it was... Stuff

that they kind of teed up anyway at the last

couple episodes of season two of Gotham. So I

mean Honestly, I didn't notice You're saying

that there's like over a minute of new footage.

I didn't really see over a minute of new footage

I just saw like 30 seconds if that but I Don't

know that's that's one of those shows that it's

gonna have to wow me when it comes back or it's

gonna be on my chopping block Yeah, what about

you Doug? I didn't even bother. I looked at it.

I saw it. I went, yeah. Gotham has not. I watched

a couple of episodes for the first season. I

went, eh, not interested. Move on. The season

two was a much better improvement overall as

far as the writing, as far as the story. But

again, there. there's only so like i hope to

god this show does not do 10 seasons because

there's just no way that they can do a smallville

10 season run because you don't have i mean david

maus or mazuz or however he says his name i'm

not trying to insult the kid but Unless we're

gonna watch him grow up and become Batman on

the show and him grow up in real life There's

just no way well on the last episode They're

gonna pull a small bill and they're gonna have

him turn around and you're gonna see bat -flag

Talk about old man Bruce. All right. Let's they

did not show a Supergirl legends trailer. Did

they? No, they did show legends. They did not

have a Supergirl Okay, I did not see the legends

trailer yet. I want to I just the legends trailer

more or less is a lot of the same It's very in

the vein of Arrow and that it shows pretty much

everything We've already seen it has like a little

bit of an explainer There's maybe about 30 seconds

of new footage in there at the end of it more

or less not giving you anything To go off of

other than one villain that they've tapped to

be in the series Um, being Damien Dark, but it

clearly looks like a past version of him. Um,

and they have Sarah in there and then they have,

um, that Rex guy with, uh, uh, Heatwave flying

the wave writer. So it's, it's, yeah. I didn't,

there really wasn't that much there either, but

I'm more enticed for the show just for the fact.

I, I'm not any more or less than I was last season,

but I like the cast. So it's enough to keep me

on. Oh yeah, I love the first season of Legends.

I thought it was just so refreshing to have Team

Up show. I mean, I enjoyed it, but I hated the

fact that it was Vandal Savage every episode

and it was like, oh, it's episodic, it's Villain

of the Week with the same villain. Yeah. So,

I mean, yeah, it was a new timeline, but it was

getting annoying because it was the same guy,

whereas this season will be a little bit different

because you're going to have all of the Arrow

and Flash villains being villains in this. Yeah,

because they're gonna go up against Legion of

Doom. Alright, so let's get to the granddaddy

of them all. The best show CW has going outside

of Supergirl, which is The Flash Season 3. And

it's Flashpoint time, Steve. I know, it's set

up a lot of stuff in this one. This is actually

the most new footage in a trailer that we saw

of any of the shows. And I was kind of surprised

by that, the fact that... Predominantly all of

it was new Yeah, yeah I'm kind of kind of hoping

that my wife can't hear me because I really don't

want her to know that Cisco is a rich guy I don't

know if anybody saw this couple it was like a

week or two ago But somebody posted on geek cast

radio on the last episode of alter geek and it

says and you get to be a speedster and you get

To be a speedster and had like a picture of Oprah

and yeah had like everybody that's getting to

be a speedster. So That that was the other thing

is is she's unfortunately my wife has already

seen the pictures of Wally West as kid flash

So that's not too much of a surprise to her.

But you know the fact that Everything is totally

different in Flashpoint and I I kind of looked

at I went yes This looks like it's gonna be a

good season all the way around. I can't well,

it's gonna be totally new Oh, yeah, I cannot

wait for October 4th. That's all I can say Let's

switch over to movies. Well, I have one quick

one that I have to bring up that looked absolutely

good for it for a series for a TV show that's

going to be on stars real quick. American Gods.

If you have not read Neil Gaiman's book, American

Gods came out back in 2001. First off, pick it

up, read it. It is absolutely incredible with

how it is. The TV series that they're coming

out with television adaptation. It's it's basically

going to go on here. Everybody's been talking

about for probably about five years now, and

we have got some absolutely incredible people

who are going to be in this thing. We've got

Ricky White playing as one of the main characters,

Shadow. We've got Ian McShane from Deadwood,

who's going to be Mr. Wednesday, Cloris Leachman

playing as Zoria. That sure. Yeah, I think it

is like God. I'm probably butchering it but basically

you're getting a bunch of gods that are showing

up and Everything looks absolutely beautiful.

You've got the you got like an Irish God. You've

got Thor that's supposed to be showing up or

Odin that's supposed to be showing up later on

and all these different gods showing up in America

and you're gonna have You're gonna have like

these Native American gods. They're gonna be

showing up throughout the series from what? from

what I've seen of the trailers. It just looks

absolutely, absolutely gorgeous. So if you have

stars, go watch it. If you don't pay a little

bit extra to get the star streaming app, just

like you would have for HBO Go or Showtime Go.

Well worth it. Yeah. Oh, one of the thing we

need to bring up before we get to film, because

I actually want to take a break in between the

two here. But Star Trek. had an eventful comic

con and they revealed the ship and they revealed

the subtitle to the series. Steve, thoughts on

the ship that they revealed for the Star Trek

CBS television series? No, thank you. They can

keep it to themselves. I don't need any STDs

in my Star Trek. Oh, come on. Don't you like

Starship Discovery Channel? Well, you know what's

funny about Starship Discovery? I was doing some

research the other day and just kind of nonchalantly

came across a article about cancelled and failed

Trek universes that never made it. And surprisingly

enough, another one that Fuller was attached

to was the ship was the exact same design for

that failed TV show. Uh huh. As the discovery

for the new show. Oh wow. And I screen capped

between the two and compared them because it

irritated me. And I... It looks I mean one's

the underside one's the over side but like it

was called Star Trek planet of the Titans which

was the original show is supposed to be more

war like and the ship is to a tee the same ship

and The thing that irritates me with this is

like it looks so cheap looks so cheap But I'm

hoping that it's just teaser footage, but um

yeah, I'm Like in in Trek and Discovery are kind

of an oxymoron so Well, you're discovering the

unknown either way like you're tracking you're

going on yeah, so I had asked I actually had

to re -record it, because I wasn't recording

at the time, but I had asked my girl Jen about

what, you know, had she heard about it and whatever

else, and we had a little bit of an over -sexualized

conversation about that, so anyone with squeamish

stomachs, skip ahead about a minute, minute and

a half, two minutes, we'll be back after this,

because it's just hilarious. We make nothing

but condom jokes the entire time. We'll be back

after this. Oh no! They sent the wrong Spock!

Live long and suck it, Zachary Quinto. So Jen,

have you seen the new name, the new subtitle

for the Star Trek series? Yes, I have, Mike.

Yeah. Star Trek Discovery. Just think about that

for a minute. Star Trek Discovery. It's an STD.

Well, then I guess we're going to have to watch

it with condoms. We don't need no STDs over here.

I think we sit honest to God. I can see we can

watch it. I can see us on the couch like sitting

there watching it and just for the fucking hell

of it every week we'll just get our little like

thing of like we'll like just blow up some little

like condoms like balloons and just kind of wrap

them all over the TV and shit and just make a

little viewing party out of it every week. CBS,

what have you done? Oh my god, Star Trek Discovery,

it's an STD, folks. Oh my god. Watch it with

passion. Watch it with passion, yeah. Watch it

with Trojans. Don't forget the K and Y. That's

a whole other thing right there. That's a whole

other lubricant problem. Turn around, Kirk. That's

a Trojan horse of a different color. Oh god,

we could keep going all night with that. I know.

now that you've heard nothing but bad Star Trek

discovery STD jokes... Now that we're done trekking

to the D, let's move on. To the films! And we're

gonna start with the suiciders. We're gonna start

with Suicide Squad. There was two clips I saw.

I saw the full trailer. And then there was another

clip with Harley and Joker where she says, Batsy,

you're ruining date night! So Steve, what did

you think of the overall Suicide Squad trailer?

Meh. I have little to no interest in this film.

I think it looks fun, and at least we'll see

Batman not hunting Superman, so there's that.

Doug, thoughts on Suicide Squad? Well, I only

saw the date night. Date night stuff because

that was what was on Conan O 'Brien and I caught

that and I was like, oh That's okay Batman shows

up. Whoa And that and then I saw a picture of

Harley Quinn of Harley's actual black and you

know black and red actual outfit that she had

on in You know way back when and Batman the animated

series, right and I kind of went oh my god and

she doesn't wear it it sounds like it yeah there's

a jiff yeah there's a jiff going around online

of her tearing it up no she throws it away yeah

yeah yeah no sorry yeah whatever all right uh

let's see we got uh wonder woman what do we think

of wonder woman mr steve trevor over there i'm

sorry uh huh huh you mean steve rogers i mean

steve trevor i mean they're the same guy um or

Or, or, technically, Captain Kirk, seeing as

how Chris Pine is Steve Trevor. That's a technical

foul. So, I think that that's going to be a really

good movie. I think it's going to be really good.

I think it's going to be very much along the

lines of Captain America, you know, the first

Avenger. I think it's going to be very much in

that vein because it takes place around the same

time. So I mean, it's I have good hopes for that

film I think it's gonna do better than any of

the DC universe that's come out extended universe

that's come out so far Doug thoughts on the Wonder

Woman trailer. Oh my god, there's color Like

the first thing when I saw it it's not all dark

there's color there's a beach There's a beach.

There's red and blue in there. Oh, my God. There's

there's actually, you know, that was what shocked

me. Don't they have a female director for that?

I think so, but I'd have to look. I'm pretty

sure they do because they wanted that for that

film. But thank God. Yeah, it's just I mean,

that was like I saw the trailer and I just kind

of went, oh, thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I think that's going to be one of the best ones

so far with that universe. Well. And it's kind

of funny because comic book resources, they actually

listed like they ranked a lot of the trailers

and they ranked Wonder Woman's trailer as the

number one trailer out of 13. So. Yes, I kind

of have to agree with this. Yeah, the director

is Patty Jenkins. Well, kudos to her. Yeah. Just

to give people some background on her for films.

She directed 2003's Monster and she directed

2011's Five. For television, she did episodes

of Entourage, Arrested Development, Sarah Silverman

program. She was an actor on there. But yeah,

no, the Wonder Woman trailer looked awesome.

I think it looks great. It's nice and bright.

I just found it super ironic that they have Captain

Kirk as Steve Trevor. And then, for me, even

though it looks dark, for me, the granddaddy

of them all, the theatrical debut highlight reel,

whatever the hell they're calling it, Justice

League. I was very... skeptical when it came

on, but when I got to actually see the footage

and I saw Bruce Wayne doing the whole thing with

Aquaman and then you get to see Cyborg and then

you see Batman and Wonder Woman kind of in the

recruitment phase. The comedy that they threw

into this to kind of lighten it up, Bruce being

more lighthearted, was nicer to see in this.

Getting to see Barry Allen The Flash instead

of what we got in The Batman V Superman it kind

of fleshed it out a little bit you get to actually

see color on some of these guys even though it

was dark it was still color by comparison to

the previous two films and So far by what I've

seen I'm thinking that they've turned a corner

and that may actually be headed in the right

direction with two good DC films next year instead

of whatever we got this year yeah yeah I mean

just see this is the thing this is what I've

they changed the bat suit again though yeah it's

all black now and they added like padded armor

so again you can't see the bats emblem because

it's mixed in the background of the damn suit

and honestly that I mean it bothers me Okay,

well and I mean I saw bits of pieces of it until

I actually see an actual photo of him in the

suit Okay, well all right it bothers you. We're

sorry. Well. It looks like they're trying to

go back to stinking Nolan I Don't think it. I

don't I don't think they're I don't think they

are I think they're trying to more homage Keaton

than anything else I don't think they're trying

to go back to Nolan. I think that they're yeah,

so for me This is what I've been saying for years

over an altered geek folks if you're not listening

You know if you're listening to talk about my

generation, but you're not listening to altered

geek or listening to altered geek on geek cast

radio But it's one of those things where I've

been saying for years now about the bat suit

and about about these things now that For Batman

v Superman was the worst way for him to be introduced

I think because He's just in a cockfight with

Superman, essentially, the whole damn movie.

I didn't have a problem with it because it's

saying that he's been established for years instead

of going through his origin of becoming Batman.

We actually had him functioning as Batman for

like 15, 20 years. Yeah, and that's fine the

you know and again I'm not trying to take this

comic -con episode down into that the BS that

is BVS But it's one of those things where that

was his debut And I did not see enough of here

see the problem with BVS is they tried to cram

so much into that damn movie That you don't really

get quality things out of being able to see Batfleck

I mean we see him we see him interacting with

certain people we see the fight we see all that

but Like the Justice League trailer I saw more

of Bruce Wayne and Batman in a what two and a

half minute trailer than I did a two almost two

almost three -hour goddamn movie that that just

is wrong. I'm sorry Yeah, you know and Justice

League to me looks amazing. It looks great It

it still looks dark. It still looks like it has

to me. It looks like it has the potential to

go sideways And I'm hoping it doesn't I really

actually would love to see DC finally have you

know a really good movie kind of kind of going

back to You know the 1970s Era of when they had

excellent, you know when they had excellent cartoon

or not cartoons. I Tell it was Joe. Thank you.

God. Why am I screwing that up? But you know,

I mean that was that was when DC lived was in

the 70s If they can do that with the movies here

for, you know, for 2017, I wish them the best

of luck because we had the crap of BBS. You know,

we had we had the Dark Knight ascends or whatever

it was. Dark Knight Rises. Yeah, I don't. OK,

so the darkness is we're talking about this now.

The Dark Knight Rises. It's. Compared to bad

and begins in the dark night. It's it's about

yes, you know, whatever but the Dark Knight Rises

was not as bad as the For me and again for the

listeners of talking about my generational you

altered geek people You already have heard me

talk about this for three freaking years The

BS that is BBS is three years of marketing for

a film That's up to almost three hours that essentially

does nothing for me for for me personally the

only thing I got enjoyment out of BBS was seeing

Batfleck as Batman, seeing the Batmobile, that's

about it. The whole joke that I continue to make,

Martha, why did you say that name? Martha is

the safe word, people. Well, he was on top of

Superman. Let's change to a different Batman

movie, shall we? Can we talk about Lego Batman?

Yes, Lego Batman. I almost forgot about Lego

Batman. Will Arnett is awesome as animated Batman.

If anybody's going to succeed, and I don't have

any problem with the guy that's doing the current

DC animated stuff next to Conroy, but Arnett

is a natural at it. Oh god, yes, I mean he is

he's the perfect character and when I first heard

that he was gonna be Lego Batman and Lego movie

I was kind of like Oh Why couldn't they get Kevin

Conroy to do it, you know I mean that was that

was my thought at first and then I saw Lego bat

You know Lego movie and I went oh He's actually

not half bad. And then I saw the Lego Batman

movie trailer and I wait Oh shit, he's perfect

for this. Alfred locks him out of the Batcave

computer. And then he's like, oh, you have to

take care of your son. And he's like, and they're

like, where's the seat belt? We don't need seat

belts. And then he smacks, oh, I'll get Alfred

to install those later. Yes. Now, that's supposed

to be Grayson or is that supposed to be Damian?

I think it's supposed to be Damian, but I don't

I don't think there's a specification. I just

think they're saying Robin because he's supposed

to be working. They said his board, so it might

actually be Grayson might actually be Grayson.

Yeah. Lego Batman movie was the Lego Batman trailer

was awesome. Absolutely loved that. There were

some great one liners and they're like, oh, so

so Batman lives in Bruce Wayne's basement. No,

Bruce Wayne lives in Batman's attic. I love that

line. That and then the whole all the different

costumes of Batman. He's got the one that's obviously

going to become the Robin and it's the reggae

man. And he goes up, he goes, oh, these pants

are a little tight. Ah, that feels so much better.

He's like, I seriously cannot look at anything

but above the waist. Yeah. Yeah, it's hilarious.

So some other things that happened at Comic -Con,

specifically to TV and film and animation scores,

we had La La Land Records debuting seven titles,

actually seven, but five are discs, two are vinyls.

They had the Star Trek 50th anniversary vinyl.

that they introduced. They had the Wonder Woman's

seven -inch picture disc vinyl that they introduced.

And then the five CD soundtracks, we have Justice

League, the first two seasons of the Bruce Timm

cartoon, Justice League, from Secret Origins

Three -Partier to the Star -Crossed Three -Partier.

So all of that music is now on four discs. They

had Supergirl Season One, The Flash Season Two,

Batman the animated series volume 4 which closes

out the first 65 episode run of music for Batman

the animated series That I do know for a fact

at some point down the line. They're gonna be

doing Adventures of Batman and Robin and then

new Batman adventures the way that La Land does

these releases is that they're wanting to single

them out to show as the individual kind of show

like The way that Warner Brothers and DC marketed

BTIS was that one whole season for the 65 run,

then they changed the shows and all that, so

they're all ends doing it that way. They also

had, oh god, what was the other one? Flash, Supergirl,

BTIS, Justice League, oh yeah, the killing joke

with Dynamic Music Partners, Michael McQuistion,

Lola Tremontes, and Christopher Carter. and also

guest starring Mark Hamill on the track I Go

Loony. Now, have we all seen the movie? Yes.

I have not yet, but I kind of know what happens,

so it's... Okay, so let me just say this right

now, folks. There have been plenty of times in

the past, specifically Batman, Mr. and the Batwoman,

that ties into the DC animated universe, Where

it has been alluded to that Bruce Wayne and Barbara

Gordon have some sort of relationship. La, la,

la, la, la, la, la. I know. I'm going to say

in a second here. So in that movie, they slightly

hinted them having some sort of relationship.

In the comics for DCAU, Kyle Higgins expanded

on that and made the story emotionally charged

and emotionally taxing and emotionally well written.

They did that. what he did was he took a just

a piece of a scene and created a whole story

around it and it was epic and it was awesome

and whatever else but everybody including all

the news media outlets online are like oh my

god Bruce Wayne has sex with Barbara Babbitt

has sex with Batgirl oh my god it's the end of

the world no it's not yes You know, I know I

get it most people including Doug who's gonna

talk here in a second see Bruce Wayne and Barbara

Gordon as more of a father -daughter kind of

thing, but Apparently, that's not how DC sees

it in the animated series that was insinuated

that she wanted the D so that was Yeah, or she

wanted the two so I know that came up in Batman

Beyond that they talked about them having a romantic

fling but I still you know even this day. I'm

kind of like I don't like that. It's just it

feels wrong to me because just because like I

said Batman always seemed like more of a father

figure to Barbara Gordon Then you know Commissioner

Gordon Jim Gordon never really was to worry and

part of that was because Jim was kind of just

married to his job You know that's kind of why

I got the feeling like Barbara went off to go

be Batgirl was because She wanted the attentions

of her dad. She wanted her her dad to take notice

of what she was doing with her life. And, you

know, that was how Batman was looking at her.

And so she was feeling that. So for her and Batman

to, you know, get down and dirty, it was kind

of like, oh, this doesn't feel right. You know,

and that's I know that there's only supposed

to be like a 10 year age difference and all that.

It's still not something I like. That's me. You

know. And if everybody else wants to go off on

it, and everybody else likes it, great. You guys

can like it. I have my opinion, and that's it.

Right. Okay, so... Yeah, I didn't care either

way. It didn't impact the story that much for

me to relatively have it in there when it's been

insinuated for years, but... Yeah, and the other

thing is, in the story of the killing joke, without

spoiling it too much for Doug, I mean, really,

the relationship is... It's essentially a nil

factor. because it really doesn't like because

they're they just constantly insinuate that there

is and they have well you you've seen the GIF

online right Doug well I I know what happens

that I know that article and all that so right

well well that's part of the story that's part

of the graphic novel but I'm saying the sex scene

is there's a GIF of the sex scene They're on

a rooftop and they end up having sex because

supposedly they're dating. But they dance around

the issue but really for me it's not even about

that. The whole movie isn't even really about

that. I do want to read this verbatim so I get

the quote right. This is quoted from Bruce Timm

on comic book resources regarding the whole sex

scene thing. Quote, it came from a three -way

conversation between co -producer Alan Burnett,

screenwriter Brian Azzarello and myself, Tim

said of the scene's origins in an interview with

Vulture. I don't remember who initially came

up with the idea, but we all kind of jumped on

it at the same time and said, yeah, that's kind

of where we need to go. My memory kind of says

it was Brian, maybe who came up with the idea,

but I'm not sure. Tim noted in the interview

that he wasn't shocked at the reaction of the

scene. We were aware that it's a little risky.

That it's definitely something stuffed in the

first part of the movie that's going to be controversial.

Here's where we came down on that specific issue.

It was really important for us to show that both

of the characters make some pretty big mistakes.

I mean, his parental skills aren't that great.

Maybe never having had any kids of his own, he

doesn't realize that if you tell a kid to not

do something, they're going to want to do it

even more. And then she makes the same some mistakes

and he kind of overreacts to her. her mistakes

and that she overacts to his overreaction. So

it's very human. It's very understandable story.

It's tricky because it's messy because relationships

are sometimes messy. But to me, to Alan, to Brian,

it was all very fascinating to us to explore

that angle. So with Bruce Tim saying this, I

don't, again, for me, like the way that the news

media outlets were making this was like, Oh my

God, it's the end of the world. It isn't that

damn bad people. Get over it. Yeah. And I mean,

overall, it's a very small part, like you said.

Yeah, it's just everybody's dwelling on that

one piece. Me, it's you know, I would really

think and you've read the comic, right? Yeah.

Yeah. OK. So I really think people would have

more overreacted to the scene where in the film

that the Joker takes the commissioner through

the through the funhouse in the roller coaster

thing and shows him various images of. Barbara,

like I really think because essentially that's

a rape scene. Yeah. You know, I would think that

people would would more overreact to that than

overreacting Batman and Batgirl getting it on.

Yeah. People are fickle these days. All right.

Is there anything else that we saw? Steve, is

there anything else that you saw at Comic Con

that you want to talk about? Not that I can remember.

Doug was there anything else that you wanted

to to bring up? Well just that there were some

really interesting cosplays that I saw I Did

see a guy who was running around as a mashup

of Ronald McDonald and Thor Yeah, that was pretty

interesting there was another really good one

which I was really fascinated by which was a

girl who She did Mandalorian armor. And it was

a snow white Mandalorian armor. And I know you

I know, Mike, that you don't care for Snow White,

but this looked so damn good. She had the red

and the blue and the yellow going on when she

took her helmet off. She had the she had the

bow in her hair like you would see for Snow White.

And she just looked cute. I mean, it looked it

was really kind of weird because you don't expect.

You know a Boba Fett type character to look cute

like that. She pulled it off perfectly Yeah,

my problem has to do with more the content of

the 1937 animated quote -unquote classic than

the actual character herself Yeah, like I've

read I've read the character in various different

iterations and things like that and all that

but I mean, yeah Hey cool Snow White as a as

a Mandalorian that works. Yeah, what other what

other costumes did you say? Well, there were

there were tons of the the big thing that everybody

was dressing as this year was Harley Quinn and

the Suicide Squad Harley Quinn Yeah, which I

kind of went. Oh god, really, please. Can we

just move off of that? You know there there was

that there were there were people that were there

were several people who were dressed up as the

Pokemon go pokey stops Okay It was, it was different.

And I saw it, I kind of went, okay, that's, that's

cute, but not really special. You know, I'm essentially

over the whole Pokemon go thing, but originally

when it started, I created this hashtag, which

sadly never caught on hashtag stop Pokemon go.

And it's more so about the fact of The irresponsibility

of certain people of some people like there is

several different news stories Like the two guys

that fell off a cliff in California Because they're

trying to play the game and the and half the

news stories about the game only focused on the

catching part They don't focus on the fact of

you have to then train these digital animals

and then fight other people All is they want

to focus on is the whole and don't get me wrong

getting outside and getting exercises all well

and good and everything else But that's all they

want to focus on And some of these like, like,

like the girl that found the dead body. It just

I don't know. It's just I'm over it at this point.

But oh, God, that the Pokemon girl was a fad

that I wish would fade out faster than beating

babies did. Yeah. The last one that was really

kind of I don't know whether to be confused by

it or think it was really cool because there

was a guy I saw who was walking the floor. And

he was dressed up as Supergirl and either he

was a really ugly Supergirl or a very very Superman

Okay on that note we're gonna take another quick

break you're here some sort of panel audio or

something We're gonna come back to close the

show after this We have got company. Batsy, Batsy,

Batsy. Stupid Batsy, you're ruining date night!

There's only one thing I know about life. I know

some things happen by chance. And some things

happen because we make them happen. Just say

it now. I'm finally free. I'm home. Hey, slugger.

There's my beautiful boy. Is everything alright?

Everything's great. You look really familiar.

I've seen you before, haven't I? Uh, Barry. Barry?

Barry Allen. Right, sorry. Some people are just

meant to be in your life. Hey. Who the hell is

this? Cisco Ramona's the richest man in America.

helicopter? Cisco... Uh -uh. Don't call me that.

I don't know you, Stringbean. We're not partners

and we're not friends. You don't know me. You

don't know my life. We're something else to each

other where you come from, aren't we? This isn't

your home, Barry. It's a mirage. It's already

screwing with you and everyone you love and pretty

soon it's gonna take me right down along with

you. What should we call this brave new world

and lots of deodorant Yes, and I will bring that

up because I was one of the dumb idiots. Oh,
