About this Episode

Steve, TFG1 Mike, and The Birdman discuss which movies successfully transition to TV and which don't. They dig into adaptations like Lethal Weapon, Frequency, Westworld, and Limitless, weighing what works when properties move from film to the small screen. The conversation also covers DVD collecting habits, tech frustrations with Skype recording, and Halloween traditions.

You're tuned in to Steve Megatron on Altered

Geek Unlimited Hello and welcome to Altered Geek,

I'm your host Steve Megatron Phillips and returning

this week is TFG1 Mike. Yeah, I was gonna say

nobody's here Yeah, and from the Great White

North finally the Dodd has come back. What's

up, bitches? I'm just gonna throw a whole bunch

of different references in there, but anyway,

I'm freaking back. What's up? I'm excited. Can't

you tell? I can tell. Too much vodka and Red

Bull. Oh, we're not nearly enough depending on

how you want to look at the situation So What

have you guys been up to let's go with Mike Mike

hasn't been on the show for a while Well, try

and keep a PG just recently celebrated my 35th

birthday Last week which which went over tremendously

well Thank you. So now I Pretty much. I think

there's a I think this is where I get the red

dot in my hand and I die like the prisoner So

that's exciting. Um Let me see, what else have

I been doing? I've done a lot of recording recently.

We actually just finished working with Onyx Path

Press, I think that's their name, for their Kickstarter

for the role -playing game Scion. We did a play

test of it, which was really, really, really

cool. We were one of the first people in the

world to try it out. So that was really, really

cool. We did five days of recording, and that

was a marathon, and that was a lot of fun. Other

than that, a lot of review stuff going on. I've

been working on stuff for Batman Return the Arkham,

which just went live tonight. In the latest nerd

news, I'm working on Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2,

Titanfall 2. I'm anxiously awaiting as of this

recording. It's like 1030 at night on Thursday.

In about an hour and a half, Skyrim comes out,

Skyrim Special Edition, so I won't be sleeping.

Have you ever sleep? I... more like... ungracefully

pass out would be a more accurate description.

Yeah, I was gonna say it's been about next year

will be twigs 10 year anniversary. It's been

about 10 years since I've known you at this point

or so and I've never known you to sleep more

than an hour and a half every four days. Yeah,

that's basically I'm like turbocharged. I either

sleep a crap ton where you think I'm dead or

I'm like, hey guys, how's it going? I can see

through time and I just happen to be awake. So

yeah. You take the term over 9 ,000 to new extremes

pretty much. I mean that's sort of my modus operandi

Also, I've been playing a crap ton of Gears of

War 4 I don't know why I've never been a huge

gears guy, but for some reason I'm really liking

this I've been playing a lot of 2k 17 for WWE

I'd like to meet the person who designed the

career mode and hit them in the face with the

turnbuckle Because my god it makes no sense And

a lot of his writing reading so typical twig

stuff took took a bit of a breather this month

because typically this month is very taxing for

me mentally so but I'm coming back strong. I'm

feeling good man back in the ring Awesome awesome

Blanchard you celebrated your 35th birthday this

year next year. I'll be 37 in a row Wow you old

yeah, yeah exactly watch those For me I've been

dealing with audio bullcrap for the last month

or so So that's pretty much gotten, essentially

I've said to others, I've said to you guys and

I've said to others, there may be a time where

in the future if I don't figure out a solution

to this, whether it's an alternate recording

method or whether Skype gets its head out of

its butt and works with Pamela Call Recorder,

I may end up quitting podcasting. Uh, cause I

just don't want to burden anyone else. Like for

me at this point, I've been recording, editing,

doing almost everything for all the shows that

I do. And if I have to ask somebody else to take

care of even one part of that, it's just like,

eh, well, whatever. So. See, Mike, this is why

you just have to learn some new skills, man.

There's always a solution. It's just not always

the easiest. Yeah. Speaking of solutions. For

those that hate the current version of Skype,

you can do a Google search and there's some websites

that basically do all the download. Old apps

will not give you a previous version of Skype,

which is typically the one I use to download

old Adobe readers when I need it. But you can

do like some of the I forget some of the websites,

but they're They're ones that typically have

downloads for files You know kind of like how

CNET used to have downloads and stuff like that

but obviously not any of the mainstream ones

are gonna have it because they have to link back

to Microsoft For the current version I went back

to a two -year -old version Uh, and now my call

recorder works and my audio works and my ringing

for when somebody's calling me works Which hasn't

worked. None of my stuff has worked right in

the last year Yeah, see you would think with

all the money microsoft pours into skype They

could get it to work properly, but I I remember

reading quite some time ago that they purposefully

don't like podcasters and other people recording

stuff via Skype. Like supposedly it's it eats

into the bottom line somehow. I don't see how.

Because it's it's bandwidth. We're eating bandwidth

and we're not paying a dime. Hey, man, I pay

for my Skype, so I don't. Yeah, I pay anywhere

from. 60 to 90 bucks a year for a Skype number

and a US and Canada calling subscription. So

for interviews and things like that, because

sometimes when you get an interview with anybody,

it doesn't matter who it is, voice actor, artist,

some people either don't use Skype or don't have

it. So I'm like, OK, well, give us a number so

we can contact you. And I think they killed Google

Hangouts too, didn't they? They turned it into

something else. I forget what the hell. It's

YouTube Live. OK, well, there you go. It's just

one of those things where you would think that,

you know, if I'm paying for Skype services and

I'm also like the Pamela pro call recorder that

I have. At the time, I think I paid like 30 bucks

for the license to use unlimited recording, and

since it does work with Skype, it's supposed

to. You'd think that it's not taking anything

from Microsoft at all. I mean, what is it taking

if I'm already paying them $90 a year for a calling

subscription and a phone number? How is that

taking money from them that's actually giving

them money a month or money money a year So and

I don't know. It's just the whole damn thing

has got me just all kinds of fed up So, yeah,

I will be Off -air helping TFG one might get

it situated. Yes. Thank you one way or Another

the recording light stays on Yes, and they have

to learn to new new learn some new tools which

hey you may you may even find something more

Accessible or you may find something that has

a lot more options for you. See I don't need

the I don't need a lot of options I don't need

a lot of bells and bells and whistles while I'm

recording a podcast. I just need it to record

properly and I want you to think of it like this

you're going from an automatic transmission to

manual transmission now, you know Automatic forever

to hell with stick shifts. I don't know man.

Take your stick and shove it. It's a lost art.

Yeah, exactly. It's a lot. Yeah, exactly. But

hey, it's a good way to stop someone from stealing

your car. It is too. You're like, I don't know

how to drive this thing. Ha! Loser. Thank God

I don't drive and I don't have to worry about

someone stealing. I know how to drive a stick

shift. I had to learn that my first week at my

job. I tried. I didn't do very well with it.

They made me do it salesman made me drive around

the parking lot till I got the hang of it and

then I still had to drive it off and on like

different ones, but I Still actively avoid them

if I can help it. Yeah So the few that are left,

you know It's really funny when we bring up certain

topics and aspects like this and I know everyone

hates the man for his past and the horribleness

that he has done but Whenever we talk about certain

topics specifically driving I always have to

reference Cosby's driving in San Francisco Where

he says I'll burn out a clutch in a minute His

career so I've been working on various video

projects for my my classroom stuff in college.

And so my first video, this is just recapping,

I've done a promo for the Top 100 Animated Characters,

because we had to do a promo of some kind. So

I animated it of my avatar, animated the mouth,

and did all this fancy crap with it. Basically

showed up everybody in the class. Because that's

what I do and then the second video I made you

had to do a 30 second spot on either a social

political issue Of some kind and I did a good

idea bad idea Like Animaniacs to do go out and

vote Not telling people who to vote for just

telling people to go out and vote Otherwise,

you're dropping a colossal nuke on the world

and it's your fault so that was essentially what

my my 30 second spot is and then for the current

one because I there's six videos we're gonna

make in this class to for the final project and

I got one that's due Monday that You had to do

either a 30 second Video doing like Like a company

logo or something coming on the screen and I

was like I Don't really know how I would do that

in 30 seconds because I every one of them I've

made has been like 12 to 15 and That's pushing

it So you had the option of also doing a TV show

promo which is 60 seconds Which I have successfully

put together. It's taken me like three days Whereas

everybody else it's taken a lot longer. I'm still

doing a cop -out method because I still have

not rented out a camera yet Because I'm using

footage that I've already recorded in other methods

and Didn't have a higher enough res version of

one of the the previous Google Hangouts that

we did for altered geek in the past with me and

powers so I'm gonna have to download the one

directly from my main YouTube channel So I can

import that because it's kind of grainy the one

that's in there and then my my video game stuff

that I've streamed Was more grainy than the video

I used from that so I actually have to capture

new footage After I record this to input It which

means I got a capture to my hard drive not necessarily

to Skype because my internet connection can't

handle it So yeah, that's it's gonna be 60 seconds

and it's a promo for like altered geek content

so and Then on the other side I get to do voiceover

for the transformers network .com doing Beast

Wars Megatron for the voice of Megatronus, who's

the one of the villains of season one of the

new 2015 Robots in Disguise Transformers cartoon.

And then I had to get a narrator in an Optimus

Prime, and the narrator is one of the guys from

the Headmasters fan dub that does the Victor

Karolyi voice. And he's a... Dead Ringer sounded

like for him, so I was like, because I got to

cast the people for it. I was like, definitely

that guy. And then the Optimus Prime, I had to

get a Peter Cullen sound like, and I'm like,

well, that's John Bailey. And I went and asked

him and he's like, I can't really legally do

that anymore. He says, I work for Hasbro now,

so I can't. use that voice pretty much outside

of that unless it's, you know, his own nonprofit

stuff. So I was like, OK, because it's for a

school project. It. Well, this isn't. Oh, well,

in that case, screw you. This this one's a paid

gig. So I it's not up to industry standard. And

Hasbro pretty much owns him now because of the

combiner wars. But. So I was like, okay, so I

was letting the guy that's doing the Victor Karolyi

would know and he's like, well, I know two people

that can do a Prime voice. And then he let me

know one guy from our fan dub and then Dr. Smoove.

Dr. Smoove is awesome. We have Dr. Smoove. He

is our Optimus Prime. That's awesome. So, yeah.

So I'm going to be excited to see how this comes

out. Once I get all the lines and once the animator

puts it all together I'm looking forward to that

plus there's we're having rumors of that we're

gonna start our own version of transformers with

own original characters and this animator is

going to create them and Basically do like a

fundraiser so we do our own like mini animated

series So I'm kind of excited about that But

yeah, that's pretty much what's been going on

with me I mean other than kind of keeping up

with what's going on geeked him and watching

a crap load of TV So I'm actually only watching

like two shows right now and I feel terrible

I'm only watching the Goldberg's and I'm watching

Survivor Everything else has totally missed me

as hell. I'm not even watching shield right now.

I'm recording. I just haven't caught up with

it I quit watching Agents of S .H .I .E .L .D.

after the first episode of the season. I realize

that it's got Ghost Rider. I just I don't care

anymore. I've seen the clips on YouTube. Ghost

Rider does seem pretty cool. He is very good

for television budget. And they do even in this

recent episode, I guess, reference Johnny Blaze,

which is Nicolas Cage's. His version. Yeah. Oh,

yeah. I just think of something else I'm watching.

Walking Dead 2. Yeah, I don't watch it. Wow.

Yeah, let's just say this this past Sunday was

so polarizing because people were like whoa And

I don't want to give out spoilers, but called

one death Kind of figured the other one was gonna

happen anyway because of the comics but uh Man,

that is some dark freaking tv. Let me tell you

um But uh, yeah, that's all you think i'm really

watching I mean I found out I only watch the

super serious stuff now, and it's so hard for

me to watch anything quote -unquote light -hearted

now, because I watch Walking Dead, I watch Game

of Thrones, which it's killing me to wait till

next frigging summer for that. Next summer's

almost here. You'll be all right. Yeah, I gotta

find something to fill that gap for Game of Thrones.

So I'm thinking about maybe checking out a show

called Vikings. There's another one called Black

Sails, which is kind of like Assassin's Creed

Black Flag the series. So maybe I'll get back

into that, but I need something to scratch that

dark fantasy itch. If only there was like a D

&D TV series or something that isn't like a cartoon

I would so totally be happy but that's neither

here nor there Yeah, I I only watch Pretty much

stuff that's already started the only like I've

been watching like anything DC television. Yep

and then like but I watch Last Man Standing Big

Bang Theory Watch that new Kevin James show.

Kevin Can Wait. I've been watching Lethal Weapon

and Frequency. I'm surprised Lethal Weapon's

still going. I mean, are it good? Yeah, it's

a good show. It is. It is really good. And those

two actors, like they basically take what Danny

Glover and Mel Gibson did and then make it their

own. But it's it's so. If those actors had been

in actual movies, you would not even they basically

embody those characters. That surprises me, and

I'm really glad to see those type of shows can

succeed considering we had the really crappy

rush hour last year. I'm not surprised that bombed.

Okay, the way that I look at the Lethal Weapon

series is, and actually next week, my buddy DJ

Valentine from Simplistic Reviews, we actually

did an episode of Remote Control talking about

the first five episodes of Lethal Weapon. I'll

say here what I'm going to say there next week.

The way I look at the Lethal Weapon TV series

is the four movies exist on their own as their

plot from one to four. There's no way you could

have a Lethal Weapon 5 anymore at this point

in time. Old people are too old. Well, it's not

even that. It is that, but it just wouldn't happen.

It just wouldn't have the same magic. And I know

people hate for the more comedy it had than seriousness,

but the way I look at the series is they take

bits and pieces of the movies without crapping

over the plots of it. Basically, the TV series

is creating its own story. Like, in this rigs

is from El Paso. His wife gets hit by a tractor

-trailer. That's how she dies. Murtaugh is a

Wayans brother. It's Damon Wayans. I know. I

know. It's Damon Wayans. It's major pain. Yeah.

Murtaugh is major pain. God, that's so crazy.

What I mean by saying that it takes bits and

pieces from the movies... it hasn't because it's

Fox and I know Fox has always been known to kind

of be a barrier breaker and really really edgy

but I think because it is network television

they have not let Riggs go full off the chain

crazy Riggs like he was in the movies but there's

a scene in episode five where Murtaugh shoots

out a window and they dive out of a building

Riggs shoots a bomb and they land in a pool.

First thing I thought of was Lethal Weapon 2,

when they fall out of the hotel with Leo, and

they land in the pool. So, there are comparisons

to the movies, but it's completely separate from

the movies. It's essentially... Well, even the

first episode, he walks in the bank, and basically

there's an armed robbery, and they... They point

a gun at him and he's like, if you're going to

do it, he's like, just blow my brains out. He

says, I don't want to be, you know, partially

paralyzed because you guys can't finish the job.

And like he puts a gun barrel right to his forehead.

Yeah. And he, of course, he walks out and everybody's

out and he just comes strolling out and he's

eating a piece of pizza. And then the building

blows up. It's really, really good. Well, you

know what? Maybe here's a brief topic for us

to talk about. What television shows actually

work or sorry, what movies actually work as TV

shows? Not a lot. Because there was one I think

had a lot of potential, but I think they squandered

it. I liked the idea of Minority Report. I thought

that would have been a cool TV series if they'd

done it about 10 years ago. Well, they've done

that. They've done the firm. Limitless. The Firm

lasted, what, one episode? No, it lasted, like,

three. Which one? The Firm. The Firm. Yeah, yeah,

it didn't last. But it was supposed to be a direct

continuation of the Tom Cruise films. They're

supposed to do one based on... It was one with

Sarah Michelle Gellar. That hasn't come out yet.

Yeah, that's supposed to happen soon. That was,

what was it, like, Fatal Attraction or something?

Or some shit like that, yeah. Something something

like that. I don't know. It's it's not out yet.

It's been delayed. It's it'll probably be out

next year There was limitless. Yeah, which only

made it one season and it was a continuation

of the Bradley Cooper movie Because somebody

else got his hand on some of that And Bradley

Cooper actually made like a cameo or something.

Yeah Yeah, he was actually in it because he was

pulling the strings. He he found out that this

other guy got his hands on some of the stuff

and he actually played his same character from

the film and he's a senator just like he was

at the end of the films and he more or less gives

this character Brian Finch a shot that allows

him to take as much of this drug as he wants

without any side effects because they found that

people that were just taking this drug to unlock

their brain it was frying them within a matter

of months and it just like destroying them and

he created this serum that you can you get booster

shots of it like every six months or something

like that and it it just you can take as much

of it as you want of the other stuff and it doesn't

affect you so yeah he plays a senator in this

film and the other guy ends up working for the

FBI helping them solve cases and but he's secretly

a mole for the the guy from the film So it's

really good, but it only lasts one season. It's

on Netflix. So I was watching that for a little

bit. I just forgot about it. I remember years

ago. This would be back about maybe 1999, maybe

even as late as 2003. There was a long conversation

about bringing George Romero's Night of the Living

Dead as a television series to TV. And now that

we have So many different zombie shows. We've

got Walking Dead, Z Nation, and I know there's

like one or two others. Like, although I think

the strain is vampires or something. And I kind

of wonder if that show would have been successful.

There's the Scream TV show. There was the Friday

the 13th TV show back in the 80s, which had nothing

to do with Camp Crystal Lake. I always found

that really kind of screwed up. um there was

the freddy's nightmares in the 80s as well and

i've just always wondered could other series

or other movies be successful in this like i'm

trying to think of you know i'll talk about this

and the only thing i can think of is at the end

of chasing amy you essentially took your characters

and turned them into a 90 minute long gay joke

well you know what i kind of wonder if the view

of skewiverse might actually work as, say, a

half -hour sitcom -like thing, because Clerks

was the animated series for six episodes, and

arguably, that would succeed now as opposed to

then. Yeah. Which I really think it's unfortunate

that they never did get the money together to

produce that. Now, if I ever became stupid rich,

I'd be like, look, Kevin... Here's the money.

Just give me a season, OK? But Kevin at this

point is stupid rich like he needs to stop making

shit like Tusk and hosers and make that was pretty

bad. Yeah. Like, see, I like everything else

is holy shit, dude. OK, seriously. And I think

I've said this before. I don't know if I've said

this on this show. I circa 99 or so, I didn't

know a lot about Kevin Smith. I knew of Clerks,

I knew of Mallrats, I knew of Chasing Amy, but

I didn't know there was this whole universe tie

-in thing. Didn't really know about the guy.

From that point forward to now, I found out about

the guy. I really like a lot of his original,

you know, his early movies and things like that.

Nowadays, I don't give a crap about Kevin Smith

or anything that he does. Honestly, like, I just,

I've lost all interest. in anything that he does,

and I shake my head whenever I hear of him being

involved with any of the DC stuff. It just...

I don't know, it just... Well, his stuff hasn't

actually been that bad with DC. Yeah. It's any

of his original projects that tend to go off

the rails. His original stuff doesn't usually

pan out all that well. Like you said, I would

like to see... a view with skewniverse tv series

i think it could work out just set it in red

bank and let it go and just kind of see what

happens and i think they're talking about bringing

clerks or not clerks mall rats as a series to

netflix and actually getting together the original

cast which that i'm totally up for because that

could be amazingly funny especially if you got

jason lee back and joey lauren adams and all

them so I know they're talking about rebooting

the Friday the 13th TV series as actually the

tie -in with Jason But that's been in production

talks for like seven years or more See that's

the thing with a lot of these things anything

that's been in production nightmare production

hell for X number of years That's not gonna get

unless you know, like you said earlier Mike unless

somebody throws a giant bag of money at them

It's not going to get made. I don't know You

have to look at like a really good example of

this is Freddie versus Jason that should have

happened in 1994. It didn't happen until 2005

I think but it did happen well, you know you

look at another thing the the the mouse Sith

Lord has resurrected Ascension. We were all,

I was all excited for Tron 3 and then they killed

it and I saw a story recently where supposedly,

because it's James Gunn from Guardians of the

Galaxy, and I'm not saying anything against that

guy at all, I'm just saying because it's him,

Disney apparently may or may not be resurrecting

Tron 3, which I think is cool, but it's just

one of those things where if too much time goes

by in between movies, whether they get made or

not, I lose interest after a while. I don't know.

I'm trying to think whether James Gunn would

be the right guy to do Tron 3, though. I mean,

visually, yeah, I could totally see him being

the visual guy. Storyteller -wise, I just don't

see the quirkiness working. I'd want someone

a little more serious for something like that.

I mean, but then again, you look at the gap between

Tron and Tron Legacy, that was, what, 25 years?

Yeah, something like that. I'd rather wait till

the next big leap in technology happens to give

me a Tron 3. Yeah, I'm totally fine with that

now. Another thing I'd like to see. Hell, this

would be a really cool mini series because I

don't know what she's doing right now. Kill Bill.

If you gave me a Kill Bill five episode mini

series with the deadly Viper assassination squad,

I am so there. Like yesterday. And I bet you

Quentin Tarantino might do it. Hell, there's

even, this just made me think of this. Netflix

actually has a series from Dusk Till Dawn and

that's Robert Rodriguez's vampire movies. And

that's a TV show. And from what I hear, it's

fairly decent. I'm just trying to get out of

horror movies if I can think of other movies

that would work as a TV series. I'd like to see

the A -Team come back. I think that could work.

I think that could work. I mean, I've seen the

2010 movie a few times, and I really enjoyed

it for what it was. It had the humor and the

fun of the original series, because I'm a huge

fan of the original Eight Team series. Everyone

says the 2010 movie just completely sucked. I

don't think it was that bad. It wasn't that bad.

As long as they got that cast back together,

I'd be all for another Eight Team movie. Don't

think you'd see that them do it on TV again I

think that they I think that that one might be

actually almost better left off where it Ended

what series of movies could work as a TV show,

but you'd have to have the right budget for it

Star Wars to exceptionally. Oh my god, um Fast

and the furious If you had a series about underground

car racing and just have it on the periphery

of the other series. Maybe Vin Diesel can show

up once or twice a season. I could see that happening

on Fox if they were to do it anymore. Well, the

problem with that is that the Fast and Furious

movies, as they've progressed, have gone beyond...

If you look at the first two Fast and Furious

movies, Fast 1 and Fast 2 are essentially mostly

all about street racing, at least the first film

was. After about... four and five it goes into

like heist film kind of territory action suspense

thing with car racing on the side like it's it's

not what i could see what you're saying mike

if it was done back in 2002 2003 but now those

that that franchise has branched off almost completely

from street racing oh okay now alright i just

thought of another thing but this will require

a scrooge mcduck vault full of money to pull

off If you could get the guys, and I think one

of them is dead, so that's a problem, but we

can overcome that. If you could give me an Ocean's

Eleven TV series, a different heist every week,

with that level of care and thought going into

it, you just imagine how much fun that would

be. It'd be like leverage. They will never do

it only because they're doing the female Ocean's

Eight. Who's in that? It's a lot of people see

I'd be okay with that as long as it's cool. I

don't care whether it's girls or I just wanted

to not suck Yeah, it's probably gonna so these

movies were actually some of my favorites out

of the the 2000 not just from the music in the

cinematography just those movies had such charisma

and If you could trim it's it's because of who

they had in it. It's not even See, this movie

is going to have Helena Bonham Carter, which

can't stand her, Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock,

Cate Blanchett. Weird. Trying to find who else

is like a part of their little crew of eight.

They don't see and they don't have any names

like actually on the page of who they're playing

or whatever. I'm not the biggest fan of Helena

Bonham Carter, because I swear to God, you get

the same performance from her in every movie.

But then again, when she's not involved with

her husband, you do get some decent stuff. Hell,

the expendables. You give that to a network that's

gotten money, and you could have some real fun

with that. Hell, it's basically, here's... Oh

my god, I just thought of something else. In

sort of the same vein, you guys talked about

Lethal Weapon. Die Hard, the TV series. I would

rather see that than see all these crap films

that keep coming out. Yeah, that would be so

cool. You give me a young John McClane in New

York after the first Die Hard movie. Bam! That

would be actually pretty good. That would be

so cool. It'd have to get the right person for

it, but yeah, that would be good Frequency that's

that's another show. That's based off of a movie

No, no, that's the one where they have like there

were a Burialis allows the These old ham radios

to communicate through time and it jumps 30 years

In the film anyway did So it allows This kid

that he's a kid in the previous timeline in there

they're going after this This type of killer

they basically the guy abducts like women all

over the place and then he abducts like nurses

after a while and eventually gets His mom but

like to begin with he he figures out that this

box communicates with his dad and from the past,

and they figure out who each other is, and then

they're both caught, like the one's a firefighter

and the other one's a cop. The son's a cop and

the dad's a firefighter, so he lets him know

that he's gonna die on this particular day and

ends up saving him, but as a result, his mother

gets captured by this killer, the Nightingale

killer, and so his timeline changes. But his

dad keeps dying at random points throughout time.

So he's trying to save him too. So it's like,

you know It gets very complicated, but the movie

is really well done and the series so far has

Managed to save the dad, but he dies still like

five years earlier from the current timeline

because of like a car crash But the mom is dead

because the night Gail murders so like the and

they switched so the instead of the son, it's

a daughter, and instead of the father being a

firefighter, he's a cop. So they flip -flop those

things, but it's been really well done so far.

And with everything that they've figured out,

they keep inching closer to the Nightingale murder,

and then there's a monkey wrench that gets thrown

in because both of them ends up screwing up at

some point. So, but it's been really well done.

I've been interested in it. It's on the CW. I

haven't had a chance to check it out yet. I want

to. I love the original movie. Mike, the original

movie is with Dennis Quaid, isn't it? Dennis

Quaid and Jim Caviezel and Andre Brauer. Jim

Caviezel? Was that the guy that played Jesus?

Yes. Okay. Yeah. He was also the one that was

in Person of Interest. Man, I love that would

work if you could reboot the entire franchise

right from the beginning You could turn saw into

a really good crime procedural show and just

have them be on the hunt for the like jigsaw

killer You could do a lot with that. The problem

is you'd have to put it on a network like showcase

or AMC because of the traps Because they'd have

to be Truthfully, it'd be pretty The The the

funny thing about that is a guy that plays jigsaw.

He's actually the voice of dr. Alchemy in the

flash That's cool I'm actually watching the saw

movies because tomorrow I do a video a show with

the angry video game nerd James Rolfe You know,

they're doing another movie, right? God damn

it. I It's gonna be out. I believe next year.

It's like saw like Well, what happened is I don't

know if you remember when the seventh film came

out it was supposed to be a seventh and eighth

film but because of What's that stupid movie

that was found footage It came out every Halloween

Yeah, paranormal activity the first one because

it did so well They kept coming out every year

so it essentially bombed the Saw franchise and

it literally died So instead of having a seventh

and eighth film they just combined them and made

one film So yeah, they They're gonna return with

Saw legacy and the The film will be out in October

27 2017 And it's a lot of the same people that

had to do with the first six seven but they're

gonna revisit some particular Well, you remember

the fire I haven't seen it yet. I'm actually

I'm on the fourth one right now There's when

you notice what happens in the seventh film,

it'll become blatantly obvious because there's

always an ultimatum with everybody in the series.

There's always the final test or whatever. Yeah,

there's always well, and they always show what

happens to somebody no matter what. Even if they

don't, you know, if they leave it hanging, you

know, there's always an ultimatum and there's

only really one person that ever like. Passes

the test, you could say. Without repercussions

later Throughout the franchise, but um, I I think

he'll be back for And I'm wondering if they're

gonna have Because you said yeah Yeah, okay.

So you already know jigsaw which oh, I just had

another thought For series that would work based

on a movie and this wouldn't require a shit shit

ton of CG it would require some it'd be more

practical costuming more more so than anything

dread judge dread if you look at the 2012 movie

as its basis as opposed to the 95 stalone movie

you could so pull off dread i could see that

being a netflix series based off carl or like

if you got carl back if you got that he wants

to do it It's just a matter of getting the thing

to keep moving. Throw money at it until... See,

that should just be the solution to... Just throw

money at it and it'll happen. You know what?

And this is gonna sound really weird, but hear

me out. Have you ever wondered if those people

who win those, like, here, here's like the $250

million Powerball lottery? Telly, if you won

that, if you wanted something to happen... Would

you not just do it? I know it's funny you say

that and I'm only gonna bring this up because

you said this Here locally sadly the morning

show is not on anymore There was a morning show

radio show here in Louisville for the last three

or four years called the Carter man program Last

year when I first started listening to them They

started a campaign to get him an Iron Man suit

since he kind of has the Tony Stark look and

basically for getting him an Ironman suit, he

would go around to hospitals and charities and

various things as Ironman. Well, a 2011 Kentucky

Powerball winner came to the station and basically

told them here, to build the suit it was going

to cost $3 ,000. So you now go fund me as you

can list up to whatever the goal that you want.

So he had people donate money and he would give

them various prizes at the donation levels, whatever

else. This guy who was this Powerball winner

came in with a three thousand dollar check so

basically all the donations actually went to

the charity and the guy essentially paid for

for for carter's suit so yeah that was yeah it

would be very cool the problem is we have to

actually win the lottery see if i had that kind

of money and this is where you're going to get

hate mail so let the heat flow through you no

cursing i would front three quarters of the money

for a Ghostbusters 2016 sequel. Like, hey, Paul

Feig, yeah, hey, you wanna make that Ghostbusters

sequel? Yeah, okay, here you go. A different

director and better writers, I'd be fine with

it. Yeah, like honestly, no, I'm okay with his

direction, but I do want different writers. Just

cause listening to the commentaries on that DVD,

which is... stupidly loaded with special features.

They had to load it up with something. There's

nothing there for the actual story of the movie.

They essentially repeat 1984. Well, that's neither

here nor there. But still, I want to advance

that world. I want to see what would happen if

they did make the sequel. So I would do that

if I had the money. Or I'd do that dread thing,

one or the other. So all I need to do is win

the Powerball. Yeah, and you will have nerdity

like you will never seen before because I always

wonder why hasn't some super nerd won the lottery?

Why is it always like Jim Jim the hobo from Hoboken,

New Jersey or Little Timmy from Arkansas who

who's like I bought this on the way to get my

shoe in tobacco Like, you know, I'm just worried.

Why is it not? Little Bob from like Los Angeles

who has a stupid Iron Man collection Sort of

thing, you know what I mean? Like I'm just waiting

for that super nerd to win the lottery and we

get the ultimate TV movie or comic book series

just funded Yeah Before we move move on to whatever

other stories. Do you want to talk about? Well,

I realize that We're recording this the Thursday

and Friday before Halloween. So I figure, oh,

this would be a cool time for us to go around

the table and say, what is one Halloween tradition

we've kept up since we were kids, Mike? I could

say something totally screwed up, but I don't

think I should if we're trying to go PG right

now. Yes, PG. I was going to say obnoxiously

loud nookie time. No. But it has to be Halloween

-based. I mean, unless you and Blair are in vampire

costumes, it doesn't count. Ghosts, sheets, it

counts. Oh, no. Technically, those three sheets.

I always try and watch the original Halloween

on Halloween. That's sort of my thing. Or I'll

watch Ghostbusters. On Halloween. I always try

and keep that up. It's been a little slack in

last couple years, but two years ago I bought

this really awesome Halloween blu -ray set and

Truth be told I haven't watched the original

out of it yet. So maybe I'll make those plans

for Monday Cool, and I can't believe Halloween's

that close. Yep. What about you Steve? I know

we've talked about on this show that you and

your wife are not doing Halloween this year,

but In your Halloween past, what was one tradition

you always kept doing? Well, she always wanted

to watch movies all October. Like any type of

scary movie. I'm not one for scary movies. Saw

was an anomaly in that group. For how wretched

the film series is, that's one of the few for

some reason I was intrigued by the storyline.

Not necessarily the gore Because it was fun to

figure out the little web of deception that was

throughout the entire series so But we would

pretty much watch like almost every series like

we'd watch the you know Friday the 13th we'd

watch Or not Friday the 13th the nightmare on

Elm Street. We'd watch Like saw we'd watch like

the Hannibal movies You know mostly that I mean

we used to go And when we had our Trailer and

we had a few other places that have done trick

-or -treating we've Done the whole handout candy

scare people blah blah blah But yeah, obviously

we're not doing it anymore, but I don't know

if you heard that episode, Mike, but just tell

him in brief why you're not doing Halloween anymore,

Steve. It's more so for two reasons. It's one,

the amount of disturbing costumes that come out

of Halloween anymore, specifically because adults

dress up in them. And it terrified my child last

year. There were well between like creepy werewolf

things that looked almost too realistic and zombies

and stuff like that It just it spooked my kid

and that's fair It wasn't wasn't a pleasant experience

plus We're recently Over the last six months

kind of going back to church and everything.

So it's Just a thing And I'm and I don't have

to be mocking. I'm just legitimately curious

Depends on the church For the most part like

I know the denomination we believe in it doesn't

they don't really go for that whole thing and

it some churches do the trunker tree, which is

fine, but like Ours particularly does a harvest

fest, which is not really that much different

than Halloween. It's just not Halloween and not

associated with any of the Creep factor of stuff,

you know, I just had kind of a fucked up idea.

Oh shit. Sorry. No twice. See Now shut up for

a minute for me 13 the one the one Halloween

tradition. I will always keep up It's the great

pumpkin Charlie Brown. I've never seen that Really?

Yeah, it's a I think it's like ABC like tomorrow.

So maybe I'll watch it for the first time. Yeah

Yeah, you should It was a rate of passage is

And for me, you know, I grew up My mom let me

watch anything. So I've you know, I'd seen all

the Michael Myers and Nightmare on Elm Street

said, you know, however old I was when each of

them came out So as a kid, I had plenty of nightmares.

So the horror genre just isn't my thing anymore

I just do not I just don't do Halloween horror

stuff and all that stuff anymore. So I will say

one of my favorite things of Halloween, though,

was the Simpsons Halloween's Treehouse of Horror

episodes. But they got progressively worse over

the years. Well, my favorite one is the one where

Homer goes into the behind the bookcase and becomes

3D and he's in the 3D world. He's like, Sexy

cakes? Unprocessed -ish sticks. And, you know,

he sees that and then the wormhole opens up and

he gets swallowed up and then he's in the real

world. This year's wasn't that bad. It was pretty

good, actually. It's been, I will admit, it's

been a few years since I've watched any of them.

Although, for my birthday, my friend Chris, who

owns a comic book store, got me a Simpsons comic

and it was a Ghostbusters variant for The Tree

House of Horror this year, which was kind of

cool. I just had a really messed up thought.

I think next year for Halloween I should watch

nothing but Christmas movies and on Christmas

time I should watch nothing but Halloween movies.

Just to switch things up. Alright, sad, strange

little man. Come on! Can you imagine watching

It's a Wonderful Life on like, Halloween? With

that, we'll be taking a quick break. Oh my god,

I'm gonna do my house up for Christmas! Welcome

to the Wicked Radio Network. Look for us every

week on geekcastradio .com, of course, Stitcher

Smart Radio, iTunes, Blog Talk Radio, and alteredgeek

.com. And now, back to the show. And we're back.

So, because we had a lengthy discussion on films

that should come to TV... We're gonna go to the

listener comments which I've compiled over the

last episode or so and from emails and So yeah

In episode 160 Kind of Murphy asks anyone watching

Westworld. He says that show has been amazing

I know you both don't watch HBO shows, but that

is one to watch if you can find a way And then

for returning shows can't wait. This is obviously

before The Walking Dead came back Even with how

much the finale sucked he's hyped so Has anybody

watched Westworld? No, but I want to because

I haven't seen the original movie But I've heard

the concept and I've heard people talk about

Westworld and I like some of the ideas that are

coming out of it Maybe that could be your filler

show Mike That's kind of what I'm thinking. Maybe

I'll see if there's an option to buy it a la

carte or by the season. I'm interested in it,

only for the fact that it's got Anthony Hopkins

and Ed Harris. Well, one of the interesting ideas

that came out about it, I was watching something

I think on YouTube and it was the nerd is saying,

what if video games get to this point and NPCs

are self -aware? Do they have rights as people?

And Westworld is essentially about a giant video

game. And I'm thinking, man, I never really thought

of it like that. I mean, if you, for example,

let's say you're running through Grand Theft

Auto and it's a simulation. If you kill a hooker,

did you just kill a person? How do you define

digital? How do you define alive? Yeah. So I'm

thinking if Westworld's taking that approach,

this sounds so cool. I'm in. Yeah, I'm not entirely

sure if I'm going to. Watch the show, but it

has me interested. I may watch when it's like

all done type of thing. But yeah, because that'll

give me something because that'll kill time until

well Game of Thrones coming back. I'm still watching

more shows than what I intended to at this point

in time. So that's not really on my list is to

add more. So how many episodes is Westworld supposed

to run this season? I don't even know. My guess

is no idea. And no clue. No idea who's next Haley

Bailey says the biggest surprise from Show is

Supergirl it went from okay to arguably the best

superhero show on CW right now easily the best

Superman portrayal since Christopher Reeve This

is dear snack Zack Snyder watch this show to

learn how to get Superman, right? Yeah, ain't

that the truth? I think clips of this He is actually

very good and I would agree with that statement

of Christopher Reeve He's good in both roles

as Clark and as Superman the only negative and

it really isn't against the show It's more so

against the costume design. I don't like the

injustice cape the yellow Buttons on the cape

where his shoulders are that's really the only

thing I don't like about it And I agree with

Haley Bailey where that person says since Christopher

Reeve I would also throw in Dean Kane in there

for live -action Superman as well because Say

what you will about Lois and Clark from 1993

that show was the only Live -action Superman

thing we had besides quest for peace And that

show has some damn good episodes and Dean Cain

was a good Clark Kent and Superman both So did

Tom Welling and like Smallville too. Yeah Wasn't

Superman it was clay was junior Clark Kent it

was Clark it was Clark and friends. Yeah I do

enjoy Smallville, but that's not Superman. I

didn't enjoy Smallville I kind of gave up after

the eighth season, but I need to go back and

finish it at some point. It's on Hulu Plus. I

watched the first season. I had no intention

of going back. Smallville is a CW show, though,

so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets yanked

from Hulu at some point. I don't think so. They

just added it. And it isn't a new show. It's

over 10 years old. Yeah, so that might be all

right. What'd you say, Mike? I said, my God,

it's hard to fathom that some of these shows

are that many years old. You realize Buffy's

almost like 20 -something now? It is 20. That's

ridiculous. Yeah. You know, next year, next year's

going to be Lethal Weapons 30th anniversary.

It's going to be Beverly Hills Cops 2 30th anniversary.

It's going to be Chasing Amy's 20th anniversary.

There's a whole bunch of anniversaries. King

of Kongs brings up the Nintendo Switch, which

we will talk about in length next episode. Brad

Lincoln says he's excited to know two things

on the Switch, which again, we'll bring that

up again next week. Scanner 51, I got some emails.

He says he wants to piggyback on something that

I brought up on 160 and that is who buys DVDs

anymore? He says short answer I do still he says

but like Steve I find myself being overly picky

on the ones I buy in fact I find myself passing

a 95 % of them the DVDs I buy on a consistent

basis are the animated DC movies the proper ones

This is he owns one of the Lego zero Batman unlimited

He says when my daughter's She's three, wants

a movie. I find myself buying the digital copy

and saving it to my phone or my old phone so

she can Chromecast to the TV. Says I don't find

myself buying a lot of blu -rays either. Again,

just easier to get them from Google Play and

cast them. I buy a lot of TV shows just because

I like having all the extra features. For buying

movies, I'll always buy Marvel. I'll always buy

anything superhero for sure. But I typically

get sent a lot of stuff from like different companies

so I Don't know. I'm picky on stuff I haven't

bought DVDs in years. I'd love to but I just

I I get some sent to me occasionally from Warner

Brothers I don't buy television series because

I can stream them I mean when and and as far

as DVDs I always buy the combo. Yeah, I don't

buy a single DVD and I don't buy blu -ray I buy

the combo even if it's a couple bucks more because

I have a DVD player in my computer and I don't

have a blu -ray player because I just haven't

Decided to buy one yet and I have a blu -ray

player out in my living room. So I like having

the option of either or But I only buy Star Trek

or Star Wars movies I don't buy anything else

anymore. Or like I bought the Back to the Future

Blu -rays when those came out. But I don't typically

buy films anymore unless they're something that

I had this like huge passion for. So, yeah. I

thought of something. I'll only buy my superhero

movies from Best Buy because of the steel cases.

I only buy a lot of I only used to buy a lot

of stuff from Best Buy the only reason why I

used to buy TVs on DVD were because of the fact

of the bonus features like if you look at the

Justice League complete series or Batman Beyond

or anything like that It wasn't because I wanted

the show on DVD because like Steve said you can

essentially find it anywhere now It was for the

special features that that they had on them,

but I have not bought any DVDs in over 10 years

Like, I typically, when I get the combos, I typically

give my sister -in -law or my friends the DVD

copies, because I'm thinking, I'm Blu -ray in

every room of the house, so I don't use them.

And my codes, I usually give to my friend Steve,

just because he's like, well, you watch a lot

of shit on the bus and the subway to go to work.

So he gets like every digital code, like hell.

I think in the last 10 years, I've given that

kid probably over 300 movies, including like

complete television series. Like I remember giving

them the complete Breaking Bad, the complete

Batman 1966 series and stuff like that. But yeah,

DVDs to me, they're coasters, but I know someone

will get use out of them. So like Steve, I'm

like you, I'll spend the extra dollar or two

and get the combo. See, for me, I used to have

an entire, there's pictures on Facebook. I used

to have three DVD shows with TV shows, DVDs,

everything. And throughout the time that I had

them, it's like I'd go to it and, nah, I don't

want to watch that. I don't want to watch that.

And I would end up going doing something else

and not watching anything. So it's like, I'd

rather just have it all online and just be able

to find it online, whether it's via iTunes or

Netflix or Hulu or whatever. Now that being said,

I have these binders like you, Mike, where there's

just a shit ton of movies. I would like to pay

someone to digitize them. Get me like a gajillion

terabyte hard drive and just be able to stream

everything. Because in Canada, our streaming

options are surprisingly getting shittier now

because we're losing a service called ShowMe

in the next month, which really sucks. It was

a Netflix competitor ish. um and it's shutting

down so i wonder if such a service exists where

someone would do that because i own the movies

i just kind of want to get rid of the physical

disks you know you can download this program

called vidcoder and you can physically rip the

disk to your computer into a mp4 this sounds

like a lot of work if you're willing to put the

work in to get the you know this is true Tainment

value in the end see Because otherwise you'd

end up paying a buttload of money for that So

that's maybe not a bad idea because what I should

just do is just grab a shitty computer Throw

in a couple of terabyte hard drives. It just

rip all my DVDs and just get rid of them Yeah,

just take an old machine of yours and just set

it up and then just let it run and then when

it's done just pop the disc and pop the next

one and that's what I've been doing at work with

because vehicles don't come with CD players anymore.

They have USB ports for flash drives and customers

because our clientele are 50 plus for the most

part because that's who they market to is like

older than that. They don't want to lose their

CDs and so they're like well I'm not going to

buy it if I can't play my CDs and so They learned

that I know how to rip them too because all I

do is I Take we have spare computers laying around

and I have an extra one laying in my office along

with my PC that I use And it's a Windows XP machine.

It's essentially a coaster. Anyway All it's good

for is ripping CDs at this point. So I use it

With media player and it downloads all the track

information and I have it rip right to the flash

drive Then as soon as one disc is done, I just

pop the next disc in and it just keeps going

until it's done. That's essentially like I've

been digitizing people's content for them and

then in exchange, the salesperson either has

to pay me or buy me lunch. It's a nice little

side gig. I got to get more of the money thing

though because I don't really want lunch every

day. So I'm gonna get to the rest of this email

and then we'll close out the show Scanner also

says he's OCD on the DC movies only buying the

DVDs for those because he wants them to be level

in his bookcase He says Same with DC live -action

movies, but those are only blu -ray again to

be level It says I rebought Star Wars 7 on DVD

just so it can be level with the six other movies

I don't own the blu -rays. He says, do you guys

have that problem or am I alone in my OCD on

level DVDs? Yeah, you're alone there, bro. I

kind of just buy whatever I buy, and it just

depends on the film. Like some of them I don't.

It depends on cost for one. And then two, it

just depends on if I want the combo or not. Actually,

I did think of something OCD and it makes me

worse than him. I'll buy multiple versions of

the same movie. Yeah, but why? Because they only

have one feature on one or one feature on the

other and they make you buy all the day. Yep.

I found this out with the Matrix and Star Trek

box set and anything Star Trek. Yeah, those those

bastards. Yeah, I won't do that. I'm I'm cheap.

I will buy the one copy from like Amazon or something

so I can get it the same day it comes out. And

then that's it. And then I can get it cheapest.

And then he's got one other question saying,

what are your feelings on letting kids use tablets

or phones? Well, my wife's a teacher and they're

a wonderful teaching tool. I totally think it's

cool just as long as you monitor what they're

doing. Don't let them screw around too much with

the fun stuff when they're supposed to be learning.

So yeah, I think it's a good thing. I mean, we

live in a tech... technologically savvy aids

so the sooner they learn the technology the better

I'm kind of in a little bit of a gray area I

at this on the one hand I want him to know about

it and I want him to use it and understand it

and but I don't want him getting glued to it

because he's got the same type of personality

I do and because I'm so glued to all this stuff

it tends to cause problems So which that's same

problem for the rest of my family We're so glued

to our PCs that or tech devices that we don't

really have a life outside of them and So I don't

really want my son getting it all that at least

this early and So but we do have a tablet we

have a Kindle fire that we use and I've loaded

up I've ripped like various YouTube channels

videos to the device and he can watch those or

play games that we've authorized and then of

course, it's passworded and everything but we

only give it to him like if we know we're gonna

be traveling For two plus hours any anything

over two hours we give it to him to keep him

busy And then we don't give him a phone He's

got like one of my old flip phones is a like

a joke phone like it's it doesn't do anything

no battery in it, so But yeah, I don't give him

any of that stuff. I mean we use just pretty

much coloring books toys trying to keep him away

from that because Technologies kind of got to

that point where it's entirely too easy to get

your hands on stuff that you shouldn't you know

so that would be my point in case so is there

anything you guys want to pimp out before we

go uh well tomorrow as i mentioned uh i'll be

doing a show with james ralph the angry video

game nerd we're going to be talking about the

saw franchise that should be out i'm guessing

saturday uh give or take so that'll be our annual

cinemassacre halloween special i do with james

every single year Um, I should also have a bots

draw. I know I've been saying that for months,

but I actually have an interview tomorrow about

uh, one of the guys who works on the new version

of delta green, which is call of Cthulhu meets

like jason boran slash 24 So if you think jason

boran can take on a show goth Well, we're gonna

find out who's gonna win that one. So that'll

be available probably on halloween And other

than that terrible warriors .com. We're doing

the road. I think I think we're running Ravenloft,

Dead by Dawn's Light right now, which is a game

that I'm GMing for our players, and that's exciting.

Good stuff. So yeah, thiswickedgeek .net, terriblewarriors

.com. I'm always around. Blanchard? No, nothing.

He's like, no, I'm clocked out for the year.

Hey, it's Halloween. I usually slow down at Halloween,

but with these damn audio issues, which I know

hopefully will be fixed after this recording,

you know still just One way or another the whole

thing is just killed my spirit to do anything

That's why you should take up crocheting I ain't

afraid of no ghosts, right? Bad pun bad pun As

for myself, I will have that video for the AlterGeek

thing out probably on my YouTube channel later

this week after I've re -edited particular footage

and fixed an audio issue I noticed while I was

watching it because I have to play some more

of Battlefield 1 in order to recapture some of

the footage for the video that I did because

it was very badly digitized, like I said, because

of my internet connection so... Yeah, I get a

place more than I only have about an hour and

a half left of the the trial 10 -hour Version

of battlefield because I can't afford to buy

the game yet Which I'll probably wait till around

Black Friday and try to get my hands on it What's

that oh, yeah, there'll be a Black Friday deal

for sure Yeah, and I'm waiting for that because

I'm hoping I can get for about 30 bucks because

then I could splurge 50 or 60 I'm like no I'll

pass And that's with any game. It doesn't matter

what it is 60 bucks makes me pass either way

And then there of course, there's the $50, you

know season pass that comes with it You know

that you're gonna buy separate to so that I was

not spending $120 a damn game. So So yeah, I

got to record some footage of that I'll probably

be playing that after the show and then Yeah,

I probably have a review on the vid channel as

well for the Batman return of the Caped Crusader

Yep Because I have that now That is a good movie

and it's got Adam Westbert Ward and Yep, playing

their respective roles again, and it's actually

very entertaining. I would not mind having more

of this classic Batman in animation form with

today's graphics, so. But, yeah, so until next

time, get altered, get geeky with the Altered

Geeks.
