Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Return of an Old Friend Part 1 Commentary

Welcome to from the command center. It has been

a long time between episode 39 and we are here

at episode 40 of the podcast I am one of your

hosts TF2 and Mike from the geek cast right now

are joining me This time is Scotty cash from

the pop culture network. What's going on dude?

What's up, man? How are you? Pretty good. Pretty

good. Happy New Year since we haven't done this

show since 2013, right? We didn't we didn't do

what was it like Thanksgiving ish? Yeah, well

how I tend to do stuff just so that most most

listeners might know this but I have to record

stuff in advance I just do because that way if

I record it in advance it's already done I don't

have to worry about trying to get everybody together

to get it done so I will generally record three

or four episodes in like a month two months ahead

of when it's actually supposed to be out nothing

wrong with that Nope, no people get sick stuff

happens. So it's better to yeah have those already

on people start to talk like this all the time

cuz they're sad. Yep Alright, so I forget which

episode it was. It was one of the Tommy commentaries

that they, someone commented, I think it was

on our website on GeekCasterEar .com, that they

had wanted a little bit more of us talking during

the episode and they were hoping that Spada would

have given a little bit more insight to Tommy's

backstory or some allusion to the Sentai version.

I will try. at this point i honestly don't know

how many more commentaries were going to do uh...

i know i have several plans i'd like to get the

podcast at least a fifty episodes uh... but at

the same time i don't want to bug people down

with commentaries and the other thing is yes

we will be doing mega force as one whole episode

mega force and super mega force it's one whole

show people i don't care that they added a super

to it for the second season uh... But we will

be covering it when Super Megaforce completes.

It just started. I've seen the first two episodes

because I have it set on my DVR for Super Megaforce.

It's all right. I like that they have the legendary

powers, but it's better than regular Megaforce.

Yeah, I wish they didn't. I wish they would just

cut out. regular Megaforce before they would

go into Super Megaforce before they went into

the legendary mode. I mean it's just like What's

the point of that? Yeah, but um But yeah, I mean

it's just one of those things where I Don't know

it just I I've seen the first two episodes as

of this recording this will go up episode 40

will go up on February 28th We're recording this

February 22nd The second episode of Super Megaforce

just aired today. I saw it. I liked it. I just

can't get behind a lot of the character. The

best thing about the show is when they go into

other suits. Well, minus the samurai suits, but,

you know, because we've already seen all that.

I'm waiting for them to, like, this past, this

episode that just aired on the 22nd, they went

into SPD mode, which I like. I thought that was

cool. I'm waiting for them to go into, like,

Like real legendary mode and what I mean by real

legendary mode is like mighty morphin or zeo

or Something like that and hopefully I assume

super mega force is only going to be 20 episodes

Yeah, I'd have no idea but they I don't know

what they did. They did uh do a diary a die ranger

today Oh, yeah, which was not in america That's

true it was it was kind of neat because uh go

say said uh This isn't even from this planet

or something like that. Yeah But the the full

-on breakdown type of coverage that we've had

in the first 20 episodes of the podcast will

happen eventually Once super mega force hits

on Netflix So today we're here to continue celebrating

21 years of Power Rangers and we're going to

be doing a commentary on Return of an Old Friend

Part 1. Any initial thoughts? Nope. Alright,

you're going to hear the Morphin call and then

you can start your DVDs, players, instant streaming,

Xbox, whatever you watch the show on after this.

So yeah He's got to go to the bathroom after

10 ,000 years. I would imagine I Have to go after

we're done doing this podcast and it's only like,

you know an hour long So I can only imagine that

her teeth are floating You know as we're going

through season one here I still love the The

episodes I loved as a kid green candle green

or the evil I still love all that stuff and at

the same time I still dislike all the episodes

I disliked as a kid all the one -offs some of

the one -offs Yeah, it's unnecessary. You just

realized that a kid that these are all these

are unnecessary Yeah, and hey titanus Titanus

they actually just released photos of him at

a toy fair. He's gonna be $200 Yeah, it's a good

thing they're not marketing it towards kids.

Good thing. Alright, so we've got this... I hate

to use the stereotype, but nerdy looking guy

walking into the juice bar. I'm sure it's gonna

be Billy's dad, right? You could almost be right

with that. Wow. That's crazy. Is it? I want to

see. I want to see Balkans gold father Faja.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Faja. Faja. Faja. Can you hear

me? Oh, there's Zach's parents. It's like we

need to get parents that look exactly like the

kids. Same hair doing everything. Yup. Oh. So

it's probably safe to say that that cake is going

to go on bulk or skull. Uh huh. Yeah. Or the

principal. The principal has lots of stuff thrown

on him. Yes he does. Uh oh. Here we go. Oh, bulky

in the crew. Who's it going on? Good old Bulk.

That's awesome. That's Bulk's dad, huh? I find

that highly illogical. Huh. Look at Ernie. He's

definitely adopted. Yeah, he's definitely adopted.

And Kimberly's mom and dad. Yep. You know how

I knew that? The mom was wearing pair. And they're

very Valley girl ish. Okay. Look how clean cut

that is Yep That's yeah you go get her we'll

stay here by this cake Yeah, I Want to see Rita's

mom and dad. I guess we know her dad is right?

Yeah master vile You know, I bet Rita comes from

a really, really disturbed family other than

the fact that Master Vial is her ultimate evil

warrior father. I bet he's one of those guys

that killed their mother at some point. Her mom's

probably like a good guy. Oh, God, I'm having

flashes of mystic force. Stop it, dude. Just

don't. Don't know the monster in this one. I

don't either. It's obviously a groundhog of some

sort. Oh, hopefully doesn't show its shadow Yeah,

we've already had six more weeks of winter. We

don't need any more joke I'm sick of snow. Yeah.

Oh They're here let's go There's the putties

of course For Kimberly can get reunited the putty

show up. Yay You know what I liked about Super

Megaforce today is that they They fought not

in costume and I don't remember them doing that

before Yeah, I don't think they do that very

often if I remember correctly that could be completely

opposite wrong. I just Watch it today and was

like wait really cool You think their mom and

dad would catch on like how come every time you're

what your alarm goes off on your watch you guys

Get a group of people together and leave And

even though it's just Jason and Zack and that

previous scene The scene right here, even though

it's just the two of them, they're in a hallway

where there are lockers and banners and whatever

else. I mean, OK, if you look at that that shot

with them in front of the lockers and then you

look at the shot with them coming out of the

juice bar, I would assume that that's part of

the juice bar hallway slash entrance. Aren't

people coming in and out of that building? You

would think that somebody would catch them. They're

already in there. That's why they're not going

in. They've already ran away because the putties.

Yeah, that's true. I don't think they're trapped

in there yet. Not yet, but he's saying... Goldar

is basically expositioning that that's what the

plan is. Run away from the mole people, everybody!

Of course. Wait, is that Jason's dad, or is that

- Yeah, it's gotta cut off. Please, dude. I know,

but it looks more like someone that might be

like a brother age, not his father. So wait a

minute. This giant thing that's underground makes

all this disturbance, and all they do is just

disappear? The thing doesn't come up out into

the juice bar and drag them underground? Come

on. Even though Goldar did say they were taking

them to the dark dimension. That's still oh Yeah

Yeah That's strange. Really Billy This is episode

what 39 or what? No 49 up 49. So Yeah, so all

the stuff that's happened and this is strange

Yeah, really Don't you think he would have moved

like as soon as you saw the smoke coming out

of the ground dude run And he's sitting there

coughing. Oh my god. He's trying to go through

the protocol He's like, I know when there's a

fire you're supposed to stop drop and roll He's

trying to think like smoke out of the ground

smoke out of the ground. Yeah, I don't remember

She's hypnotizing him great So first she takes

control of Tommy now. She's taking control of

Billy Reader really needs some new plots What

was that? It's the monster do what I'm saying.

What was that movie where? They were those what

the hell was that movie? I think I think Kevin

Bacon was in there something like that turd turd

It started with a T. Tremors. Oh, Tremors, yeah.

Wasn't Kevin Bacon in that? I couldn't tell you

without looking it up. Yeah, but that's basically

what this episode is. It's Tremors. Tremors.

The return of an old tremor. Speaking of Dragon

Dagger I seen the legendary Dragon Dagger at

my Toys R Us a couple days ago and I just I couldn't

do it for $80 I just I mean I had I had it I

I looked online for maybe like a 20 % off or

something. I just not I can't I couldn't do it

for 80 bucks Now did they have it in some sort

of open packaging or you kind of test it? No,

you can see it, but you can't know there's no

test So it's not like push here for sound sometimes

That sucks at least they'd make some sort of

packaging that would do that so you could at

least hear the sound It's it may look as gorgeous

though. Did it mean? I'll probably eventually

have to pull the trigger if I can get some kind

of coupon or goes on sale or something So I'm

gonna go get my my dragon there and take I'm

also take it to Rita it's true. It's true owner

Yeah, I Really care about my friends, I mean

I like my friends, you know, I even say I love

some of them, you know and I think I would be

a pretty upset if they took my friends if they

took my parents I would be irate and I would

I would also start destroying the city Yeah,

happy like look. I'm gonna go ahead. Do my mom

back I would like just morph me to wherever and

give me all the Zords. I'll be back. I must have

missed something because Alpha's sitting there

snoozing like a like a Conked out robot and all

of a sudden Trini pinches him and he comes alive.

I'm like, wait a minute. What did Billy do to

Alpha? That actually made him in a toy form.

Did they really? About halfway through Well soon

as the monster shows up they have to go it's

morphin time, bro. Yep. I Still miss that green

guy at the beginning though. Yeah This is the

is this the first time now granted? We're not

doing all the episodes in season one for commentaries

But this is the first time more than Jason and

Tommy have been in the dark dimension Yeah, well

I know for a fact that it's more It's the first

time that the than the other people have been

in the dark dimension I don't think they ever

were in the dark dimension except for this Well,

that's what I'm saying. I don't know if there's

episodes between this and the last one we covered

I don't believe so Yeah, so that's interesting

that they all get to kind of fight in the dark

dimension And I'm thinking... Did Jason save

Tommy or did Tommy save Jason in the dark dimension?

It was both. They both saved each other. Isn't

there only been one person besides Goldar in

here? But no, I think there was both of them

at the same time. Yeah, it was Jason and Tommy.

They both saved each other. What, is Billy tired?

Or what, did he spring his ankle? Well, Billy's

still under the control. Well, then he should

be helping Goldar. What's he doing? What's he

I don't know what he's doing But he just snatched

it out of his hand It's like mine pwned you bitch

You that's exactly what Golar was thinking I

pwned you They're very understanding yeah, it's

not your fault It looks like Golar is gonna do

something really wrong with that thing stop Yes,

I know we try to make this a family podcast but

still since oh great an hourglass yay, I Think

I like the green candle better. We didn't have

a lighter Okay, what can you do? Wait, I thought

you couldn't morph up there. You can't you're

not spoke what? You can't morph in the dark domain

That's interesting seeing gold And he's playing

look look his left hand was playing it too. Yeah,

what things playing the blade? Yeah That's nuts,

I love the dragon sword no, I know but I'm just

thinking about Them being morphed in the dark

dimension, they could never do that before. They

were always in human form, both Jason and Thomas.

Look at his hand. He's playing the blade, dude.

Now when the Dragon's War comes out in legendary

mode or whatever, like the toy, I'll own it the

day I see it. I figured you would, yeah. That's

a must -have. Like this skin really old dude,

I'm sick of fighting the dragon sword Yeah, this

is like what the second time they fought him

yeah, well they fought him more than that but

second Occasion I guess yeah Cuz he kicked the

crap out of him like two or three times And then

they became a team. So this is probably like

a third time third or fourth time. Yeah I know

therms connected infracells are up no mega thrusters

are go that's the wrong show I'm telling you

dude It's extremely similar You know, I haven't

been paying a lot of attention to the Power Rangers

toy news I've been seeing a lot of the stuff

that Oh seen a lot of the stuff that JDF's been

doing. Oh my god Have you seen that first episode

of my morph in life? Oh Man, it's it's him. It's

basically his World record is the is the first

episode for the skydive karate sky karate That's

it's what it was. Okay, martial arts skydiving.

He jumped out of a plane and broke seven out

of eight boards to break a Guinness World Record

in midair. Yeah, I'm not kidding. I will send

you the link. I don't need to see that episode.

Well, first of all, why is that a Guinness record?

I don't know, but he did it and it was really

cool to see the like because part of the episode

isn't just watching him do it. It's showing you

how he gets it set up, how he contacts. you know

it's all the behind the scenes stuff um and it

was really really cool oh jeez thanks for nothing

yeah really Yeah, cuz that's what I would do

is believe gold are yeah, really You know a spider

-man would have done Not gave him the coins.

They would have been like look. It's just my

mom and dad or all the people in the world Technically

spider -man doesn't have his mom and dad anymore

No, spider -man would have done this spider -man

spider -man says when stacey and went after the

people and the real comic Yeah, well, this is

essentially them making a deal with the devil

and spider -man made a deal with the devil No,

that's not quite the same thing It's like look

we're gonna give you like your your parents,

but we're gonna destroy everything else always.

Oh, that's fine. Yeah, that's fair Oh, you got

me. Bazinga, Goldar, bazinga. So Rita has won

the day. Yep. In theory, she's really gonna have

to screw something up in order for this not to

go her way. I got the parents. I got their coins.

They can't do anything without the coins. I can't

screw this up. So if they still have the dragon

sword coin and See the tremors like seriously,

they couldn't even Have we even seen them face

the monster in part one here? No They faced gold

are putting he threat and the putties and he

threatened them and Then BAM we flashed to the

dragon's art coin and BAM Tommy's back And that's

all well and good, and we leave it off with where

is everybody? Seriously? Go Green Ranger, go.

Yeah. Alright, well that's the commentary. We

Fantastic. Allons -y! Alright folks, well, uh,

my final thoughts on this part one of Return

of an Old Friend? Sadly anti -climactic. I was

expecting something a little bit more than just

seeing Tom - seeing the flash of the Dragon Coin

and then seeing Tommy appear. Don't get me wrong,

I love seeing Tommy appear, but - It just really

felt like, wait, what? That's it? Rita's won?

They can't do anything? There's nothing? It's

not even an action shot. Like, there was one

of the... One of the multi -parties, it might

have been Green with Evil, where part of it,

like, as soon as... I think it was like part

four into part five. Part four ended on a really,

really great cliffhanger with the zords being

destroyed and everything else, and this is just

like... Well, that's how... I mean, if you stop

and think about it, that's how all of their multi

partners are. The first one is, you know, it's

always like that. It doesn't power rangers really

never ever ended on a cliffhanger. It was always

ended on like you're completely screwed. You're

done. Like agreeing with people one, two and

three. Remember how awful those were? Well, not

awful, but, you know, anti -climactic, like you

said. And basically that's how all their two

partners are is just like. This is what they

do. Yeah, it's just crazy man. It really really

is Alright any other? thoughts on Part one that

you want to bring up. I'm just I'm just glad

he's back at this point and I was I was juiced

For whatever reason though, I kind of I kind

of figured he was gonna come back, you know being

I don't remember how old I was what 13 You know,

I didn't have the internet or nothing like that.

So it wasn't like I was Googling this stuff or

anything. But it just always felt like you knew

he was going to come back. Yeah. Well, he is

currently 21 years later, the longest running,

most famous Power Ranger at this point. Alright,
