ToonCast
Andrew Hingson on Cartoon Origins

About this Episode
Well, ladies and gentlemen, this is TF2 and Mike
from the GeekCast Radio Network and here on Tooncast.
So, something I've debated doing over the years
is that originally Tooncast was meant to be finite.
One episode 000 to episode 100. whatever cartoons
we wanted to talk about and Optimus Solo and
I along with everyone else that appears on Tooncast
did that from 2009 when the network launched
on June 1st of that year through June 1st of
2011. At the time Tooncast we were aiming for
cartoons from Looney Tunes era 1920s 30s 40s
50s all the way up until 1999. So it was kind
of a retro thing. It was kind of a way back when
machine type of thing. When I launched Tooncast
Beyond in 2011, it was supposed to be cartoons
from the year 2000 to whenever now is. It's kind
of like how Bruce Timm explains the Batman Beyond
future. It takes place fifty years from whatever
the future is now obviously we now know that
the batman beyond future is twenty thirty eight
twenty thirty nine twenty forty etc etc etc holy
crap we're only a decade or so away from being
in the batman beyond future so There was two
shows. There was Tooncast Classic and there was
Tooncast Beyond for two very different eras of
cartoons. Well, it is now 2022. Tooncast Beyond
is 11 years old at this point. Tooncast Classic
is however the hell old. 13, I believe, if I'm
doing the math right in my head, which I don't
like doing math in my head. I prefer to take...
never mind. Anyway, so yeah. Tooncast Beyond
is 11 years old. Tooncast Classic is 13 years
old. Whole point in doing this whole spiel is
that I had Steve Megatron combine both feeds.
So if you ever listen to Tooncast... If you ever
start at the beginning, you're going to get Tooncast
episode 0 through Tooncast episode 100. And then
you're going to get Tooncast Beyond episode 0
up until Tooncast Beyond episode 82. After that,
it gets a little wonky, but then it goes back
to Tooncast Classic, where we've done the Marvel
What If things along with myself and Allison
Richards. and we've done other things, and interviews,
and this, that, anything. So the whole point
of all of this is to say, currently, Tooncast,
overall, the X number of, you know, the 13 -year
journey that Tooncast Classic and Tooncast Beyond
have been on is now in all one feed, which means
we have, not counting doubles, which I've already
deleted, we have 283 episodes of Tooncast. So,
what you're about to hear is the 284th episode
of Tooncast, even though in the episode I say
it's episode 331. So yeah, please enjoy Tooncast
episode 284 with myself and longtime friend of
the show, longtime friend of the network, Andrew
Sketch Hinkson, where I get his... origins in
cartoon habits. Up next, here on Tooncast, unleash
the Toon in you, and now on with the show. Hey,
it's your friendly neighborhood Spider -Man here,
and I'm swinging by the Geekcast Radio Network.
Hello and welcome to Tooncast this is episode
331 and yes, I know folks you may hear that me
say 331 well, that's because I'm trying To combine
the classic Tooncast with Tooncast Beyond because
I want Tooncast to be an overall show Instead
of having it be two separate shows and hopefully
we've done that by now. So I am deeming this
episode 331 I am, of course, TFGO and Mike, and
we are continuing on with the Tooncast origins
here on the Geekcast Radio Network. This time
around, we have the origins of Toonster, Mr.
Andrew Sketch Hinkson, who the last time he was
on a GCRN podcast was in 2016, question mark?
Yeah, that sounds right. He's the top 100 characters.
Yeah, top 100 animated characters. Uh, Mr. Sketch
and I, 1984, have had a lot of fun, uh, when
we, when I started Tooncast Beyond back in the
day, and we talked about a lot of good and bad
cartoons, both animated series and films. Cause
yeah, I'm, yeah, I'm pretty sure you were on
a lot of those DreamWorks films. Some of the
really, really bad ones, like Flushed Away. Why
would you, between - Oh yeah, I think I was on
Flushed Away. You were, I know you were, but
between Flushed Away - Clearly I had nothing
better to do. No, well, hey! Hey! So between
Flushed Away and Ratatouille, I don't understand
why DreamWorks and Disney needs to make a movie
about bathrooms and rats in restaurants. Couldn't
tell you. Couldn't tell you so yes here at tune
cast even though we will be getting back to the
cartoon discussions You know as time progresses.
I've had a lot of changes go on in life in the
last four and a half years some good some bad
and I will talk about those in a different episode
and I will let and I was gonna let him know beforehand,
but I'll let him know afterwards, but It's just
one of those things. Life happens and I'm resettling
myself in a new town and a new state and a new
apartment. And I'm not back up to full. I'm going
to watch the first five episodes of thundercats,
blah, blah, blah. And then have a podcast recording
with Optimus Solo. And Optimus Solo just moved
from Chicago to, or not from Chicago, from Rockford,
Illinois to Florida somewhere. So. he's in transition
as well so the cartoon review stuff will be coming
back until then though I will be doing cartoon
origins here on Tooncast we have 30 questions
all about cartoon watching habits number one
did you grow up watching cartoons and what were
some of your earliest cartoon memories Oh boy,
yeah I did. Definitely watched a lot of cartoons
growing up. I think actually one of my earliest
cartoon memories. I would have been three years
old when the pilot of Ninja Turtles aired. I
definitely remember the TV Guide ad. I'm not
sure if I caught it live, but I feel like I did.
And that's pretty far back when I was three years
old is when that came out. And around that same
time, you know, the first the DuckTales first
season, which was airing in syndication. Yep.
Yep, yep, yep. What cartoons were you watching
most as a kid? Were you a Saturday morning consumer
and after school consumer or both? Well, definitely
both. Would say more after school and before
school when I was growing up Because and this
is this was a truly magical time just before
the Disney afternoon Started in my area the syndicated
block of cartoons on weekday afternoons was Ducktales
rescue Rangers and Ninja Turtles and I was in
heaven a lot of other times Turtles was Weekday
mornings, and then eventually it was on the USA
Cartoon Express, and I catch the morning airings
of that. That's probably the only thing I watched
on USA Cartoon Express, actually. I love me some
turtles. And then, of course, when Disney Afternoon
came out, I was way into that. I liked Tailspin,
but not nearly as much as Darkwing Duck. I loved
Darkwing Duck. So after school was definitely
a big time for watching cartoons, even into my
teenage years, because in my teenage years, and
I got Cartoon Network, then there was the Toonami
action cartoon block in the afternoon from like
four to six. And that was a very big cartoon
block for me. Yes, but Saturday mornings. I feel
like I didn't really watch a lot of Saturday
morning cartoons until like kids WB And then
I definitely was doing more Saturday morning
cartoons But I do remember watching at the awful
time of like 6 a .m. The Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon
on ABC and Reboot that was also aired pretty
early if I recall Yeah, there is nothing like
Nothing like waking up at five 30 in the morning
to get ready for school and to get ready for
the bus and whatever else. And you're watching
like the last three and a half minutes of news
from five 57 to six AM. And then all of a sudden.
Sonic the Hedgehog goes, you know, speeding by
with his chili dog. Like, there's nothing like
that feeling of that show at six. Like, that's
just too much. I love you, I love you, I love
you, Urkel, but Sonic at 6 a .m. Just a little
much, a little much, a little too much of a tablespoon
of something when you're trying to, like, because
for me, when I was a kid. Uh, most of the time
when we had to catch the bus, the bus would come
at like six 30. So I had to be up at five 30,
take the shower, do the, this, the, that, the,
whatever, take the, you know, get the breakfast,
get everything together, brush the teeth, all
that stuff and be out of the house by like six
25. Cause the bus was like a five minute walk
up the street. So, you know, yeah. So yeah, Sonic.
a little too much juicing at 6 a .m. What was
your number one favorite cartoon as a kid? As
a kid, it is definitely Teenage Mutant Ninja
Turtles. If there was anything that was close
to second place, maybe either Darkwing Duck or
Animaniacs, but it's probably Ninja Turtles.
Cool cool So do you have other cartoons? Did
you have other cartoons that you liked? Do you
have a favorite cartoon genre type? I like all
manner of cartoons Growing up. I really liked
you know superhero shows spider -man Batman wasn't
too into x -men, but I definitely was into Superman
Batman and spider -man the tick I like the comedies,
the Warner Brothers comedies, Animaniacs, Freakazoid,
and Tiny Toons, of course. And even before that,
Tasmania. That's a good one, too. As I got older,
I liked more action -oriented animation. Around
the late 90s, when... Sometime after both Sailor
Moon and Dragon Ball were tried in syndication
Pokemon comes along and Suddenly, I know what
anime is I saw Samurai Pizza Cats before that
in the earlier 90s and that that was a fun show
But I didn't really connect that that was a Japanese
cartoon, but Pokemon I knew because I read Nintendo
Power I was like, oh Pokemon the animation from
Japan's coming over. I'm gonna check this out
And I was really into that in junior high. And
then into high school, I got into Dragon Ball,
Dragon Ball Z, Gundam, starting with Gundam Wing,
Antunami. I got that was because I unfortunately
didn't pay nearly enough attention to shows like
Gargoyles. Gundam Wing comes along and I'm like,
wow, this is a cartoon where I'm not sure who
the good guy is. This is compelling. Obviously
if I had paid more attention to gargoyles, I
would have dawned on that way sooner, but what
can you do? I rectified it eventually. But uh,
yeah, Toonami keeps introducing lots of different
anime, a lot of giant robot shows, a lot of space
sci -fi stuff, and a lot of martial arts stuff,
and kind of the later 2000s I got into Naruto
which seems like a natural progression after
Ninja Turtles, right? Ninja So I kind of fell
off of Naruto by the time The 2003 Ninja Turtles
comes along and then I was way into Ninja Turtles
again You know, there was just a kind of a little
period in the late 90s to the early 2000s But
I was so hyped for more Ninja Turtles in my high
school days. Yeah for Ninja Turtles to come back
Yeah, well that's the, you know, that's the funny
thing about specifically Transformers and Turtles.
So Generation 1 for Transformers, as everyone
knows, ran from 1984 to 1987. Turtles ran from
1987 to 1996. Yes, there was Generation 2 for
Transformers, but those were just repackaged
G1 episodes. But we did have you know we had
that in syndication but there was no new transformers
cartoons until nineteen ninety six where is from
ninety six to two thousand three there was no
new turtles stuff. Between the first you know
between the seventy seven thousand three it's
funny how that that happens in that goes in and
what i've noticed with animation and even anime
i am. I am a noob when it comes to anime. The
closest thing I come to anime, and it really
isn't even anime, is Steve Bloom as the voice
of Tom on Toonami. It's not that I dislike the
stuff, it's just it's not my thing, and that's
okay. I respect it for what it is, and I watch...
Alright, so you talk about Pokemon. How big of
a Pokemon fan were you? Oh, man in junior high
I was I was pretty deep into Pokemon I had the
cards I had the games I watched the anime I missed
one episode of Pokemon in syndication and I was
devastated just Devastated it's ridiculous. No,
they think back to it. But Yeah, I was I was
definitely into it for a short time Because for
me growing up, I watched it here or there. I
knew all the characters. I knew Squirtle. I knew
Pikachu. I knew Ash. I knew Misty. I knew Brock.
Jesse and James and Team Rocket and Meowth and
all of that. And I remember what a big deal Mewtwo
was. And I was like, Oh God. okay you guys can
have it no it was i know i know it was and i
and i respected for that my point in bringing
all of this up is is that pokemon if i was going
to get into anime pokemon was the show and then
like a year i don't i don't know how much after
it but all of a sudden here comes digimon and
i'm like wait what Yeah, and then all of the
Pokemon clones fall into place Everybody wanted
a piece Yeah, so how much of a Digimon fan were
you or did you just stay in the Pokemon camp?
Yeah, actually I really liked Digimon Early on
I like the first two seasons in particular by
the time the second season was coming out I was
I was kind of like Should I really be watching
this? I mean, it's obviously a show for younger
audiences than me a sophisticated teenager But
I was it was kind of a guilty pleasure. I And
at that point I hadn't I think I was probably
not watching Pokemon as much because Digimon
was kind of cooler Creatures could actually talk
and turn into like really big Monsters it's you
know, it was it was kind of cool. I Didn't really
get into any of the other Monster battle shows
like a lot of people roughly my age were into
Yu -Gi -Oh. Nah, not me Really? it's probably
because I don't really care for card games that
much like the Pokemon card game was the only
card game I ever really got into and Yeah, so
When my friends started playing Yu -Gi -Oh, I
was like, eh, whatever. Good for you. Obviously,
I won't understate the success of Yu -Gi -Oh
or its popularity. But yeah, I was a little over
it by then. I was too busy getting back into
Ninja Turtles. Yeah. Though I don't think I ever
really left. Oh, no. Once you saw the 87 series,
once you saw, and I'm going to say all three
of them, but once you saw the three films, even
if you were an early adopter, comic reader of
the original Mirage stuff, once you're a Turtles
fan, you're a Turtles fan. Same thing with Masters
of the Universe. Just because from 1987, yeah,
she relapsed it to 87. Yeah. Just because from
1987 to 2002, there was no, okay, technically
1987 to 1991 or two, because there was that new
adventures of He -Man. But let's just say from
Filmation to Mike Young Productions. You know,
just cause there wasn't anything doesn't mean
that you being a fan of it goes away. Like you're
still a fan of it. And that kind of ties into
question six, which is how often do you go back
and rewatch any other cartoons you grew up with?
Well, uh, I find it difficult to do that much
because there's such a wealth of content. Like
I'm. I'm finding new animation to watch all the
time. Like, just in Japanese shows, there's like
30 shows coming out every three months. And then
you have all the streaming service coming out
with new animation. You know, you have the main
networks still coming out with stuff. I mean,
like the kids networks, not. Yeah, there are
some prime time comedies, too, but I haven't
watched too many of those. But. There's there's
just so much that even though I I like to collect
the show so that I so I have them and I'll like
check out an episode every now and then it's
not too often that I rewatch a show except for
when they run on tsunami because a lot of times
what airs on tsunami is something I've already
seen or If it's a Toonami original production,
then for the purpose of talking about it on a
podcast, I'll probably watch that episode once
or twice on top of the original airing, depending
on, you know, how much I needed to pay attention.
But yeah, when it comes to just rewatching stuff
to revisit it, like. Definitely do that with
episodes of Ninja Turtles. I've definitely rewatched
the first five many many times I think we all
have yeah, I mean that it's it's the peak It's
the peak But beyond that, you know If there's
a particular other character that I really liked
like I'll throw out the punk frogs episode cuz
I like the punk frogs and leatherhead The you
soggy yo Jimbo episodes You know those those
particular episodes i'll i'll go back uh There
was a point where I was like trying to rewatch
the 2003 ninja turtles, but that's a lot of episodes
So yeah, I didn't get too far into that um And
and likewise You know, I enjoyed watching the
2012 show as it was airing, but I don't have
much of a desire to rewatch it It's the darndest
thing. Yeah, it's one of those things where,
and again, this actually ties in. We were talking
about this off air, how I don't feel like we
should hold up cartoons to see if they're the
best and or worst from our childhood. I said
off air that most of these cartoons, whenever
they were made, they were made in the time that
they were made. Like, 87 Turtles was not made
to, almost 40 years later, say, oh, this really
holds up. And the funny thing about the 87 Turtles
is, this past Christmas, for myself, I grabbed,
finally, after all these years, I grabbed the
Turtle Van 23 disc DVD set for Turtles. You paid
way too much for that. Me probably a whole second
single bet. Tell me you didn't pay money for
this Yeah, I know I I listened to you talking
about the the status of the discs in the case
and let me tell you there is there is a worse
there is a worse situation if you didn't buy
the turtle bin if You buy the complete set that
they put in like Walmart now All the discs are
like stacked on each other not enough rings it
is horrendous the only reason I bought that set
is because this is the only way that you can
get that entire series digitally is if you buy
it at Walmart in person then you scan your receipts
on Voodoo on Voodoo and then you get all the
episodes to stream and that I don't I don't touch
that box that I just stream them because Yeah,
honestly, you're better off just buying the individual
sets. They all have pretty neat box art anyway.
Though you might say the Season 3 set as opposed
to the individual volumes or the Season 7 set
as opposed to the individual volumes. Gosh, I
actually got the individual volumes for Season
7 which came with turtle figures. That was stupid.
I mean it was neat at the time was celebrating
the I want to say the 25th anniversary Yeah,
yeah, you know, it's you know, it's fine But
so when I rewatch shows I tend to go for the
small commitments like some of the adult swim
shows like Harvey Birdman attorney -at -law rewatch
episodes of that Space Ghost Coast to Coast episodes
of that the Brecht show C lab 2021, you know
those early adult swim shows because they're
very short There's not that many episodes of
them, so it's not a big commitment. I'll just
throw those on. Futurama, I used to rewatch a
lot, but I don't do so much these days. There
was a time period where streaming wasn't really
going yet, and I didn't have a lot of TV access.
And in that period, I was watching my DVDs. And
that was when I was revisiting 80s turtles, 2003
turtles, various anime. But as far as big commitments
that I have rewatched goes, and this kind of
sounds ridiculous, there's a show called One
Piece. It is my favorite anime, my favorite show,
period. My favorite media, even more so than
Ninja Turtles, or at least their neck and neck.
And it, I kid you not, in Japan it's over a thousand
episodes. Over a thousand and the first I want
to say 200 to 300 of them. I have rewatched probably
five times Which is crazy. I know Wow Now obviously
I haven't rewatched all the episodes that many
times but like the first 203 episodes. Yeah,
I did it because I I watched it the first time
and Then I would like watch it with friends So
I would introduce it to other friends and I would
watch it and this this is the show that like
kicked Naruto to the curb for me because One
piece a show about pirates though They don't
really do much in the way of pirating and they
all have like superpowers and they're ridiculously
powerful and it's this ongoing epic About finding
this treasure that they never find as it takes
forever But the characters are so great the character
dynamics The world building is fantastic. Every
location that they go to is so well thought out
and interesting. And that's how it's managed
to go for over a thousand comic chapters and
over a thousand animated episodes. And that show
started in 1999 in Japan, and I think the comic
started in 97. And it's still going. Wow. Supposedly
it's reaching towards its ending, but it is massive.
And the fact that it is one of the few things
that I have rewatched a considerable amount of
episodes of. Other than that, I'll revisit Spectacular
Spider -Man because it's not a big commitment
and I love that show. It's still the best Spider
-Man, in my opinion. Not that anything good has
come since, but we'll get to that, I guess. Wait
a minute. Into the Spider -Verse, I'll say, is
fantastic, but that's a movie. Yes, that's a
movie. I'm talking about TV shows. Right, right.
You know, I know there was all of these since
Disney bought Marvel, there was all of these
Spider -Man shows, you know, recently within
the last five, six, seven, eight, nine, maybe
a 10 years span at this point. You know, but
I only caught them here and there. I didn't like
I've never got like it's better than what I can.
The one I can think of off the top of my head
was Ultimate Spider -Man. I believe that was
one of them. It lasted longer than any other
Marvel animated series, and that makes my stomach
turn. Even beat X -Men. Well, the one thing that
I, because I recently rewatched Spectacular,
because again, when we were talking off air,
folks, you won't hear this, but... I'm gonna
tell it to you now. We did, I don't remember
this, but we did do an episode on Spectacular
Spider -Man on Tooncast Beyond back in 2013,
2012, whatever the hell that was. I do not remember
a damn thing about it because I haven't been
able to find Spectacular Spider -Man until it
recently hit Netflix. And it hit Netflix, I'm
like, okay, I'm gonna watch this. I never had
an opinion of the show. I knew Josh Keaton was
in it. I knew Gwen was going to be in it and
MJ was going to be in it. And I knew Gwen was
kind of going to be the best friend kind of thing.
I will say as kind of a pseudo review, the only
major things with the normal people in the show
that I didn't like is in like Liz Allen at all.
She can take her PD and shove it up. I cannot
stand Liz Allen in that show. Wow. That's my
only, I guess you could say, hot take because
holy crap, hot takes are a thing now, apparently.
Opinions are opinions, folks. They're like assholes.
Everybody's got an opinion. It doesn't have to
be a hot take. Oh my God. I actually thought
her relationship with Peter was... Not bad. It's,
okay, her relationship with him is not bad, and
I don't have a problem with that part of it.
It's just, but Petey, oh, Petey, like, oh, no,
stop. Kind of annoying, yeah. I'll give you that.
Yeah. It's just that one thing, her calling him
Petey. Petey. Yeah, that's the only thing. They
can have a relationship. They can date. They
can do whatever, even though we all know he wants
to be with Glenn. Yes, he does. Yes, he does.
I will say again, before I move on to the next
question for you here, is that one of the things
I missed out initially when we did, again, no
memory whatsoever. rewatching it again and I
actually cut the audio out so I'll probably put
it in here somewhere Josh Keaton is a voice so
like everyone's like oh my god Frank Welker the
man of a thousand voices and this is just a simple
simple simple thing that Josh did in the epithodes
when he was doing this So the reason why I'm
talking like this is I think you know why I burnt
my tongue. I burnt my tongue. I burnt my tongue.
Oh, I never saw that. I don't remember seeing
that originally X number, like a decade ago.
I don't remember it. And then I'm watching it
on Netflix. I'm like, oh my God, this is the
single greatest piece of voice acting. Like literally.
I love that. I love, I just, God. I almost want,
because I do want to get Josh back on to talk
because Josh has had a huge career before and
since we interviewed him the first time, but
I want to have him back on because not only do
I want to ask him about Skinny Steve and all
of that with the what -ifs and the what -evers,
but I almost wanted to do the whole interview.
Yeah, it was I just he has a hard time whipping
when he can't fuck That's right. You can't quit
when they can't talk. But yeah, no, absolutely
and I am only doing that voice folks because
of the burnt tongue aspect because what happened
was MJ kind of like looked at him and like, well,
I can't really hang out unless I have hangout
eyes. She made these like googly eyes at him.
And so he went off to get the hot chocolate.
He got hot chocolate spilled. Somebody bumped
into him and the hot chocolate spilled all over
him, burnt his tongue. I am not sitting here
talking like this because I'm trying to make
fun of Daffy Duck or anybody like that. You are
despicable. Yeah, exactly. I know. I'm the worst
podcaster ever. Anyway. Fuck run fucking fast.
Yeah, yeah. Wait, that's a completely different
speech impediment. You're right. This is the
last time I work with a duck with a speech impediment.
I can't do Donald. You'll find most ducks do
have speech impediments. Yep. And others just
have egos. Donald. I was going to say, if you
enjoy Josh Keaton acting like he's burnt his
tongue, in one piece there's a swordsman named
Zorro, and he often has his sword in his mouth,
like he uses three swords. He'll be serving like
this. Props to both the Japanese and English
actors for and all the other international actors
who play Roronoro Zoro. But Chris Sabat definitely
does a good job as Zoro doing that. So you've
kind of already talked about this, but questions
eight and nine kind of are flip sides of the
same coin. Eight is, which cartoons that aired
when you were an adult have you liked the most?
Okay, some more recent stuff. I think Bob's Burgers
is very entertaining. I liked Rick and Morty,
at least initially. I don't know how I feel about
it these days. It's getting kind of up its own
hoo -ha, so I don't know. It's not quite the...
The level that I appreciate something like the
venture brothers, which is an extremely clever
show and very entertaining which it just started
as kind of a parody of Johnny Quest and adventure
cartoons and it just Became this huge sprawling
narrative with great characters and it's it's
so much more than the sum of its parts And unfortunately,
it's pretty much canceled, though there is supposed
to be like one last movie. Right. As far as youth
cartoons go, in the early 2010s, I really liked
Young Justice. I really liked the... I really
liked Symbionic Titan from the creator of Samurai
Jack, Genndy Tartokowski. And... Also Dexter's
lab. And also in the comedy department, regular
show was my jam. I appreciated regular show on
the level that a young adult should. That it's
two slacker buddies piling around, getting into
trouble. Various parts about the show, particularly
the relationship drama is kind of not great.
But I definitely enjoyed the ride at the time
and it it lasted like over 200 episodes granted
They were 11 minutes for the most part but to
come up with that many ideas is crazy and the
creator of that show JG Quintel who worked on
other shows including the Marvelous world of
flapjack, which is a very weird cartoon He went
on to do close enough which was originally going
to be a TBS show but it got moved to HBO Max
and it lasted three seasons but they just cancelled
it and it's heartbreaking for me because I love
it because in a lot of ways it it's not quite
regular show but it's close enough but uh yeah
truthfully it's like if regular show didn't have
the constraints that a children's network put
on it Not that they didn't get away with a lot,
because they definitely did. But I really enjoyed
that. And in the... Man, I feel like I've been
an adult for a long time. So like the late 2000s,
that's when Spectacular Spider -Man aired. Love
that. And the other... I liked Wolverine and
the X -Men pretty well. I would have liked to
see more of it. But it's you know, it was okay,
but the Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes is
so good Absolutely fantastic. The only thing
that kills me about that show is when they switched
hands kind of late in the second season and it
kind of got messy and Also, they recast Josh
Keaton last minute and I hate them forever for
it Wait, wait, wait. Who was he in Avengers?
He was going to be Spider -Man. And then they
had Drake Bell dub over it. That's when Drake
started. Released the Keaton cut. I need it in
my life. Yeah, I was very disappointed in that.
They kind of make fun of it, honestly, because
there's this one part where it's like, what's
wrong with your voice? Think that was actually
the original line. So I don't know if they were
necessarily making fun of The particular voice,
but I just I hated that because that was sort
of the proof that spectacular spider -man was
in the same universe But and they all they also
were gonna have Darren Norris voice J Jonah Jameson
and kind of the evidence of that is he is listed
as some other character like Like just an additional
voice, but they of course had JK Simmons Rerecord
for Jameson because he was the he was the Jameson
voice and of course he's fantastic so I ain't
complaining about that, but man replacing Josh
Keaton Hurts yeah Especially because trying to
make that at all in continuity with ultimate
spider -man was pointless because they just cancelled
Avengers anyway, you know, yeah, so I Leaves
a real bad taste in my mouth. Yeah a lot of the
old A lot of the older Cartoons that we initially
covered on tooncast beyond I The only thing I
remember about Earth's Mightiest Heroes is that
those first ten episodes Are nothing Like what
the shit like they're the they're the vignettes
They're the you know, they're the mini movies
kind of thing and it threw me off and I didn't
like it I'm so fine because it was okay to the
characters Whatever it is What I'm saying is
those initial things about that show Basically
turned me off to that show and I've never gone
back. But now that we live in the streaming world,
I can, you know, hop on Disney plus or wherever
it's. It's streaming. Like I wasn't even sure
if regular show was streaming somewhere. And
then you mentioned HBO Max and I just looked
and I'm like, Oh, okay. I don't know how much
of regular show I'll be able to get through if
I want to even watch it. But at least I now know
that. there's an option to for me to go to to
watch it. So the flip side of this coin is that
are there any cartoons you hate or have been
greatly disappointed by? I want to say let's
start with greatly disappointed going with something
that's I initially very much liked and that is
I don't like the direction that Young Justice
has gone in since it was revived for HBO. Well,
actually was revived for DC Universe and then
continued on HBO Max. It's just not what I want
the story to do. They're not delivering on storylines
that were initiated in 2010. And I just. Want
them to do that. I know Greg likes to play the
long game, but I'm getting annoyed at this point.
And they constantly change focus to a different
group of characters. And like, what made the
first season so great is the cast that was so
great. And even in the second season, they're
like, well, now you have these new characters.
Like, but I want the old characters. And then
they kind of rectified that in the newer seasons,
but not really. They're just kind of just dipping
their toes in there, but there's still major
story things like, what is the story anymore?
I don't know. It's very convoluted. I tried to
explain it to somebody who hadn't seen Young
Justice before. I was like, you know what? I
give up. I can't. I can't do it. I can't do it.
So what you're saying is Young Justice has whelmed
itself out because it's not under or overwhelming,
it's just whelmed. Yeah, it's pretty whelmed.
Even at this level, it's still a good show, though
the production values definitely took a hit.
Overall, it's still a good show. It's just not
a great show anymore in my opinion and that that
pains me because it was such a great show like
there are I'll get into that later. So another
show And I was never the biggest fan of Avatar
the last airbender, but you know, I I watched
it. I enjoyed it The legend of Korra comes along
and I felt like the first season was really strong
But by the end of the fourth season, I was kind
of like, I don't know how much I like this show.
It's kind of lost me somewhere in there. I wouldn't
go so far as to say that's disappointing because
I wasn't really having high expectations, but
maybe, maybe a bit disappointing, yeah. I could
be here all day talking about anime that looked
promising in the first couple of episodes that
just absolutely Pitter out or crap the bed There
was it there was a show on tsunami called finna
pirate princess, which I like pirate shows and
It was a beautiful show the first several episodes
were very interesting fun characters they get
to the ending and I'm like That was terrible
You took you took like a a nine out of ten show
and brought it down to a six Hurts it hurts,
man It's so weird. Really, it is so weird to
see not just cartoons, but any long form visual
media. Movies don't count because movies are
fine. Even if you have a 23 or 24 or 27 film
universe, whatever it is, that doesn't count
because those movies are only ever like two to
seven hours each. You take cartoons, you take
live action television shows that go on for five,
six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 12, 13, however
many seasons you want to say. And at some point,
and this is what depresses me about it is because
at some point, to your point, by season four
or by this season, you're like, eh. I just don't,
it's taken a turn. It's kind of like, this is
a path that you're on that I can't follow. It's
like that line, like, okay, that's the path you
choose. That's fine. That's great. I'm sorry.
I cannot follow your path. You know what I mean?
Like, I don't know. At this point, I'm thankful
that the DCAU ended when it did. Yeah, it ended
before it got bad. Yeah. Have you read the comics?
Oh, and to that point, I mean, every now and
then there's like a sort of incontinuity movie
that comes out. I thought the Justice League
versus the Fatal Five was... That was okay. But
that... that that batman harley quinn movie i
don't you'll have to remind because i i don't
want to try to look it up you'll have to remind
me who is the voice of dick gracing in that uh
oh god i don't remember but anyway was it neil
patrick harris i it was it was either neil patrick
harris or they or it was it was I know it was
not Lauren. I know. I don't think it was Lauren.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Oh, OK. It was maybe it was.
No, no. United. No, I think it was. No, it won't.
Oh, God, it was because I know I remember this
now. This is the only thing I remember about
this film. So because they wanted to, I guess,
tie it into DCIU. Kevin returns as Batman, Lauren
returns as Nightwing. It was Lauren, oh gosh.
Yeah, it was. And the only reason why I remember
this is because of this line that I will place
right here, even though I'm going to probably
edit the next thing I say out. So just for your
edit, just for your own edification, stop laughing
so I can have an edit point, please. Just for
your own edification, what he said was. The things
I can't do for Gotham or the things that I do
for Gotham. He said one of those lines. Like
one of the like, I think it was, you know, I
do for Gotham. Yes. Yes. And obviously people
would have just heard it just now, but yeah,
that's the only thing I remember from that film
is him saying that line. So now I got to talk
about some cartoons that I flat out didn't like.
Okay, and that that is long list and Not not
really I mean I Really liked Dragon Ball, but
I hate Dragon Ball GT as most Dragon Ball fans
should and I really likes Naruto, but when it
got to its season the Naruto Shippuden series
which ran 500 episodes on its own Yeah, that
lost me at some point and I got to the point
where I no longer liked it and started disliking
it. But beyond that, in the late 2000s, Cartoon
Network was playing the crap out of Johnny Test
and I couldn't stand it. So I don't believe that
I was actually on that Johnny Test episode, but
maybe I was and suffered through it. I am pretty
damn sure you were on the Johnny test episode
because I don't generally do this. Usually I
have a bevy of co -hosts that I can just message
privately and say, Hey, would you like to be
on this podcast? And I think Johnny test was
one of those episodes where I'm like, Okay. Public
announcement time. Anybody want to be on the
Johnny test episode? And I think you were the
one that raised your, yup. I still need to fix
the audio file, but Andrew sketch 1984 Hinks
and, uh, you know, maybe I wanted to tear it
a new one. April 8th, 2015. And you know what?
Johnny test is. Okay, so he's what? 9, 10, 11,
12. He's somewhere before he's a teenager, right?
He's an obnoxious kid, that's what he is. Okay,
fine, but my point is, is that... The dog was
cool. Yes, Dookie is cool. My point is, is that
he's not Dexter age, or he's not Rugrats age,
or he's not, you know what I mean? Like, he's
supposed to be that... Ten eleven twelve year
old boy like we were is all grown up age. Oh
God stop it. Yeah, that's not bad enough But
my point is is that Johnny is? Supposed to be
that kid that's somewhere between 10 and 13 where
He just wants to be a kid. He wants those simple
summer pleasures He has his best friend dog that
can talk him into anything and then he has these
evil twisted twin sisters that make him do all
this stuff and Yeah, but there's way better characters
in that rough age range that are far more tolerable
like Maximilian goof never had a problem with
him or PJ but I will say that the Huey, Dewey,
and Louie in Quack Pack are kind of bad. Did
the voice actors change between DuckTales and
Quack Pack? Yes, because they're not all Roosie
Taylor. They were like EG Daily and I forget
who else. Yeah. So yeah, I, you know, you're
right. I mean, I still like Johnny though, because
I like what he represents and what that show
represents. And besides it's friggin Ian James
Corlett as the dad. Anytime Ian does anything,
I absolutely love it because it's just, he's,
he's a great, great voice actor. Alright any
other ones you want to mention that you particularly
hate I? Wouldn't say hate but I There was definitely
a time where like Johnny test Cartoon Network
was over playing a particular show and it was
scooby -doo and I Like I find scooby -doo fine
in small doses, and I really liked mystery ink
but They just played it way too much and I did
I was tired of seeing Scooby -Doo and then they
started playing it on kids WB and there's even
more Scooby -Doo so I never hated Scooby -Doo,
but I definitely grew to dislike its presence
and Yeah, when it comes to cartoons that I just
wish did not exist pretty much every Marvel cartoon
since Ultimate Spider -Man Except, uh, what if.
Except what if, yeah. Because, they're just so
not good. The Guardians of the Galaski Show was
okay, but the Avengers assemble was not good.
It's kind of gotten better as they shuffled the
lineup, but it's too beholden to the MCU, but
in weird ways. But it still tries to do its own
thing, but like I just think they look terrible
all of them Especially that Hulk show my gosh
the Hulk show had bad production value Hulk and
the agents of smash yeah that that one was at
least kind of entertaining Didn't last very long,
but no it did ultimate spider -man was super
obnoxious The Avengers show the Avengers were
acting like children fighting over cookies And
I was like, nope, I'm done. I mean, if I wanted
to watch that, I'd watch Super Hero Squad Show,
which is amazing. Yes, that is a good show. Yes,
that is a good show. The late 2000s period of
Marvel cartoons were great. The Super Hero Squad
Show, Wolverine and the X -Men, Avengers Earth's
Mightiest Heroes, and Spectacular Spider -Man,
all good shows. Well worth watching. Pretty much
everything ever since Disney bought Marvel has
been mediocre at best and it pains me Because
I like the MCU for the most part though in more
recent times I've been kind of disappointed by
multiple things on that front But I won't get
into that because it's not about yeah, that's
a yeah That's that's a discussion for a different
podcast that we can have at a later date. Thankfully.
What if was good? And I absolutely I want to
see the spider -man freshman year gosh, I hope
it's the first good spider -man since spectacular
Yeah, like I've given them all chances and I
just know No, they're not good Yeah, I yeah,
that's a the whole MC We will have an MCU episode
at some point on geek cast radio because I eventually
want to do something on geek cast radio or on
our other show studio 2009 Where we sit and review
the films But we review them in Chronological
order So you start with first Avenger you go
to captain, you know, you know what I mean, like
timeline order That's the way I want to that's
the way I want to do it now. Yeah, you can do
that now Yeah, exactly cuz all 23 24 25, but
what I'm gonna say here is is that after endgame
Other than what if and some other things this
phase four stuff, man, I don't know like I'm
not a horror person So I probably won't end up
watching Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of
Madness. However, I will more than willingly
read the Wikipedia article to see what I'm missing.
It's kind of like that thing where... It's not
really a horror movie. Okay, but I'm saying there
are horror elements in it because hello, it's
a Sam Raimi film. Anyway, you know, whatever.
But the point is, is that... Some of the stuff
is like, it's like that old saying when you're
at an office job or something and the boss calls
a meeting. This meeting could have been an email.
This meeting could have been a phone call. Some
of these phase four things could have been something
else. I'm not saying that about Dr. Strange.
I'm saying that about stuff like Eternals and
whatever else. Eternals probably should have
been a series so they could actually flesh out
the characters. Yeah, you think? But most of
the series, I feel like, should have just been
a movie. Yeah. And they usually go on too long,
like the middle is the worst part. Sometimes
the ending is okay. Yeah, sometimes But sometimes
I digress, but I just remembered something else
that I wanted another axe to grind Because I
was very very deep in my loyalty to Ninja Turtles.
So basically any Ninja Turtles knockoff not for
me except I made an exception for Mighty Ducks
Probably because they were ducks Yes, you can't
no I refuse to let you I got a duck bias it's
not Okay That animated series is completely separate
even though it's in line with the overall franchise
Yeah, it's its own thing. It's it but it's its
own like it's not like they put Charlie as as
no head You know, it's not like they put, not,
not flim flam, um, uh, Goldberg, uh, you know,
so it's its own thing. It's, it's, it's whatever.
And I always thought that was a good series.
I like it. Yeah. Okay. Good. Then, then you have
no extra ground. That is, that is the only one
that I accept. Like it's just my duck bias, I
guess, because I mean, I have, I don't hate.
Bikermice from Mars, or Street Sharks, or Extreme
Dinosaurs, or what have you. But I definitely
don't care about them. They're not for me. And
anytime they take swipes at Ninja Turtles, I'm
like, yeah, yeah, try to make fun of the better
show. Go ahead. Go ahead. Everybody knows pizzas
better than burgers, Street Sharks. Everybody
knows. Though I do enjoy a burger. You know,
in the last, okay, wait, Street Sharks. When
did Street Sharks come out? I wanna say 93. Okay.
Maybe 92. Okay, so let's just say the last 30
years. No, it must have been after X -Men, so
like 94? Okay, it's still close to being 30 years
old. The point is, is that 30 years ago... I
don't remember a lot of like, Hey, here's your
bacon cheeseburger pizza or whatever. Like literally
I just added to one of my Meyer carts, the Jack's
cheeseburger pizza. Like we've combined them
now. I'm not saying you should always do that,
but you can combine them. You don't have to fight.
You can combine them. Exactly. Just leave the
lettuce and tomato and onions away from that
stuff. Anyway. All right. Growing up, did you
and your friends ever pretend to be the cartoon
characters you saw on TV at say school recess
or something like that? So basically, you know,
you and your buddy insert name here is like,
you're like, I'm going to be Raphael from 87
and he's going to be Bebop and you're gonna kick
his butt or anything like that. Yeah, we definitely
did Ninja Turtles Not cartoons, but we also definitely
did Power Rangers I was big into Power Rangers
in the 90s But yeah, definitely Ninja Turtles
I Don't think I ever played Darkwing Duck, but
I did have a Darkwing Duck costume for Halloween
one year Hmm and I and I had the gas gun toy
Dope yes that gas gun was amazing Gotta make
sure it has an orange cap on it though. Mm -hmm
All right It's true. It's choosing time Who is
your end all be all favorite character from any
cartoon? You can pick a hero character and a
villain character All right, well I don't like
to pick just one of the Ninja Turtles. So I won't.
My favorite protagonist is Monkey D. Luffy from
One Piece. He is a goofball, also occasionally
a badass. He's not particularly heroic, like
he doesn't consider himself a hero, he is a pirate.
But if you need somebody to... kick somebody's
ass, he's a good choice. Also, he's just a big
goofball and he'll steal all the food and yeah,
he'd probably be pretty annoying, but I just
like him. I like him a lot. All right. Villain,
villain, villain, villain, villain. Oh man. Hmm
I am Not sure I'm not sure I mean there's been
so many versions of the shredder but You got
to go with James Avery shredder Yeah bouncing
off of Pat Fraley's Crang They were just the
best bad guy duo I Love I love those guys So,
yeah, probably them. Alright. What are some other
cartoon characters you like? Are there any you
hate? Yeah, I like all the turtles for various
reasons. You know, I feel like they're all kind
of a part of me. I like... All the primary characters
in one piece it's a whole crew There's the swordsman
Zoro the sharpshooter Usopp who also comes up
with inventions There's the navigator Nami and
the Archaeologist Robin sees a fairly stoic and
the really ridiculous cyborg guy Frankie He's
a lot of fun and a skeleton that plays the violin
Yes, the violin with an afro. He has an afro
and Chopper their Reindeer man companion that
is usually very small size, but can actually
become quite big Other characters that I generally
like hmm, there's a lot of characters that I
like Yeah hard to hard to say I like I like coupe
and Jamie and Kiva from Megas XLR this this gearhead
wrestling fan who soups up a giant robot from
the future and his slacker buddy who's voiced
by Steve Bloom and the straight man of the group
is a woman from the future named Kiva and she
just kind of tolerates them. So I think they're
a fun dynamic. I think Samurai Jack is a great
character. No text, not technically his name,
I suppose, but the samurai. Yes, so many good
characters out there. I do like Bebop and Rocksteady.
They are fun. And I do like April, of course,
like April and Casey, the various versions of
Casey Jones, the more unhinged and the less unhinged.
They're fun. Yeah, so I mentioned earlier that
I got the 23 disc Turtle Van set because mainly
really honestly at this point after having it
like the only reason why anyone would buy that
set even when it was at MSRP or after it was
at MSRP and it was that ungodly amount of money
you buy it for the turtle van so you can display
your other action figures with the turtle you
know with a decent you know turtle van but you
don't buy it for the DVD storage man that's a
whole other discussion for another day Where
was I going with this? I've lost my chair, but
oh So as I'm as I'm watching through this I'm
up to like disc six of the 23 and I'm it's like
corporate Raiders of Dimension X Yeah, something
like that close close to that But I see Casey
and I'm like, so here's the thing All as I ever
remember from Turtles as a kid cuz Turtles hit
when I was seven so it was one of those things
where Oh my God, I need the toys. We went out
and got all the toys for like five bucks each
and whatever. And, you know, oh my God, but all
is I ever remember is all of the VHS releases.
I do not remember watching turtles on television
until somewhere around 94 or 95. And by then
it was whatever it was ended up being kind of
thing. So as I'm watching through this show.
You're right. First five episodes? Amazing. Just,
you know, it's the best animation, it's the best
this, it's the best that. But some of these other
epi - like, I don't remember some of these plots.
I don't remember some of these plots. I don't
- I didn't realize, like, in the middle of season
two is when they started going into outer space
and going into other plan. Like - I don't remember
all that. I remember Irma, the 50 -foot woman
in New York City, or I remember Attack of the
Killer Pizzas, or that kind of stuff. And I remember
Leatherhead's debut. I remember the Leatherhead
episodes. I remember the Frogs episode, because
those were big deals. But the rest of this so
far, I'm like, what the hell am I watching? And
then, what makes me so upset, And I don't know
what was going on at the time and there's nothing
I can do to change it, but Some of the voice
acting changes In some of these at like That's
not how you're supposed to sound Leonardo That's
like Cam Clark must have been sick that day and
they must have put some weird other person in
there You must be thinking of a different turtle
because Leo has always been Cam Clark, but Don
and Ralph Definitely had substitutes Okay, well
Mike and Leo didn't Okay, and that's fine I'm
just saying Shredder did like for one or two
times and I know the substitute and I'm okay
with it It's still always gonna be James Avery,
but I believe if my ears are remembering this
right it was Dorian Harewood Yeah, I think he
did do that Yeah, because they also had Jim Cummings
and believe it or not, Townsend Coleman at least
once. Wow. So as I'm watching one of these episodes,
I'm like, wait a minute. What's 94 Iron Man?
What's War Machine? Because Dorian Harewood was
the voice of Jim Rhodes in the 94 Iron Man cartoon.
I'm like, wait a minute. What's frigging War
Machine doing as the voice of Shredder? What's
going on here? This is strange. I don't know.
So I'm still making my way through the DVDs.
Didn't James Avery take over for War Machine?
I'd have to research that. We can do that off
air. I honestly don't remember. I think he did,
so that would be kind of amusing. I think he
did. Yeah, you're right. That would be very amusing.
Speaking of voices... Who are some of your favorite
cartoon voices and or voice actors? Oh, yes Well,
I mean you got to give it up to Mel blank the
legend all of his characters truly wonderful
Oh Gosh, how do I pronounce his name? Do you
know how to pronounce the name of Donald Duck's
voice actor Tony? Oh I feel bad I met him once,
which was really great. Yeah, I think like nobody
else can do the voice like him. So Bill Farmer,
absolutely fantastic, is goofy. Jim Cummings.
Love Jim Cummings and especially since, you know,
the old Disney cartoons and being Darkwing Duck
himself. Also, Winnie the Pooh and so, so many
other characters. Rob Paulson, of course. I love
hearing Rob Paulson in all the things. Townsend
Coleman More more recently. I love Josh Keaton.
I'm always happy to hear Josh Keaton and more
things and Jason Spisak. I Love hearing Jason
Spisak he was Kit Flash and Young Justice and
razor in the Green Lantern and before that he
did some anime Which it was like hey good moving
on up in the world speaking of anime Steve Bloom
Love Steve bloom of course I have to love Steve
bloom For multitude of roles. I mean he's greatest
spiky cowboy bebop Jamie and Megas XLR So many
other characters, but as Tom on tsunami Opposite
of Sarah those those are also a couple of my
favorite characters, which is kind of a weird
thing to say but I Love Tom Sarah The thing about
the Tsunami era, the early parts of the Tsunami
era, or at least the Steve... I was doing...
Because I was looking into... Oh, because I know
what it was. Funko put out a pop of Tom. Yeah,
I got that. But it's not Steve Bloom Tom. No,
it's Sonny Strafe. Yeah, it's original 1 .0 Tom.
It's not Tom 2 .0. Yeah, and I'm like, okay Funko
When are you gonna put the Steve Blum? Yeah,
I'm out because it's not yeah, when's that happening?
So because of me getting that pot of that Funko
pop I Immediately went to YouTube searched if
Steve Blum tsunami Tom watched all the thing
about Tsunami Tom and Sarah and all of that and
the ship and all of that. It's the anime version
of USA Cartoon Express. It is. It's that thing
of having some sort of somebody be the narrator,
be the... You're trying to create a new cartoon
block. You're trying to create the Tsunami cartoon
block, whether it's... reruns of old cartoons
that are action cartoons like Justice League,
Justice League Unlimited, Batman the Animated
Series, Batman Beyond, whatever, or you're trying
to create it for the other side, which is all
of the anime shows, like One Piece, like Pokemon,
like this, like that, whatever else. So you have
to have somebody be the, he's, Steve Bloom, whether
you're listening to this or not, this is an ultimate
compliment because sadly this person is no longer
here. Steve Bloom, Tom is essentially Bob Saget
on America's funniest home videos. That's what
he is. And it's amazing and it's awesome. And
it's really, really cool. I'm sure you'd be honored
to hear it. Funko get on that Tom 2 .0 pop. Damn
it. I bought three of them. What more do you
want from me? Okay. One was a gift. One, one
was a gift to my friend, Jeff Harris, who's a
long time to know me historian. There you go
creator of the X bridge website, which is defunct
now But the X bridge website a wealth of information
on tsunami's earlier years Yeah, very cool. I
also got him the complete thundercats DVD set
because he's big into thundercats Very cool.
Very cool. Yeah, but there's so many more actors.
So sunny straight was the first voice of Tom.
He was also Krillin in Dragon Ball Z, the bald
guy, the little bald guy. He's Usopp in one piece,
the sharpshooter inventor guy. And he is just
so many other anime characters. But one of his
best roles is as this squid creature that used
to be human in that's kind of a spoiler. A squid
creature. with tentacles is this big yellow squid
creature that's trying to teach this class of
underperforming students in this prestigious
academy that really values their grades and he's
trying to, you know, give them their life lessons
and get their book smarts up and he just plays
this character with so many different emotions
and he's absolutely hilarious and Also delivers
on the drama when when the drama comes So sunny
sunny straight is fantastic. He's got his own
rig He teaches classes now Yeah, yeah and Another
one piece character Luffy's voice is a woman.
It's calling clinking beard who also was a Risa
Hawkeye on full mental alchemist and Urza on
fairy tale and many, many other characters, but
she is sensational, whether she's playing a young
boy, teen boy, or a woman of any age. She's very
talented, and I can't give her enough props.
And also Kari Wahlgren, who was Haruko on FLCL.
was like her first anime role. In more recent
years, she's done a lot of western animation.
She's on Rick and Morty. She's in the most recent
season of Young Justice. She was on kind of a
lot of action shows in the later 2000s. So she's
great. Very cool. And just to swing it back around
to Mr. Duck. I looked it up. It is Tony Anselmo.
Anselmo. So it's A -N -S -E -L -M -O is how his
last name is spelled. So the way I assume, it's
Tony Anselmo. Now, I don't, is this, I didn't
look further. Is he still with us? Yeah. I know.
Yeah. Okay. Okay. But who isn't is Joe Askley,
one of the great voices of Daffy Duck. Yeah,
because I love the Duck Dodgers show. Duck Dodgers.
And Bob Bergen, of course Bob Bergen, Porky Pig,
and Billy West. I love me some Billy West. I
love Futurama. And Billy West is everybody in
Futurama. Yeah, Billy West. And Maurice LaMars.
I was very happy to meet Maurice LaMars and Rob
Paulson one year. It was the darndest thing.
I was at a local convention. I want to say, oh
man, it was probably like 10 years ago at this
point. Rob was there with Jess Harnell and Tara
Strong and Maurice LaMarche and And Kevin Conroy
Who obviously had the largest line also Tara
because it was right around the time of My Little
Pony Friendship is Magic So they they had the
big lines and then like Jess and Maurice and
Rob the lines in comparison I was like, oh man
Yeah, but I got to spend some good time with
them. That was that was nice. I bumped into Rob
Before his signing like he was just walking around
like nobody knows who that guy is But I do He's
one of my heroes Yeah, I'll see if that was me
walking around and I saw him I Would just go
up to him I would wave at him I would then get
a little bit more into his space and I would
basically just whisper to him, Mr. Paulson, I
think I'm the only one here who knows who you
are. I might have said something to that effect.
I need to get Rob back on. It's such a treat.
We've talked to him twice here on Tooncast, and
I've only ever talked to Mr. LaMarche once, and
- Oh, he is such a delight. No, he is. Absolutely,
he is. I usually, and this is why, and I tell
this story all the time, but Maurice LaMarche,
I thought was going to be the - I thought he
was going to end the Geekcast Radio Network and
Tooncast because usually when I do interviews,
I don't really like, I, I prep them by saying,
Hey, I'm going to ask you this question, this
question, you know, these types of questions,
whatever. And I will tell them usually if you
want to curse, fine. If not fine, it doesn't
matter. We still tag it explicit anyway, because
of in you and do's or don'ts. And that was it.
And one of the questions we usually ask voice
actors is, what type of voice acting do you prefer
the most? Animation, or what type of acting?
Voice acting for animation, video games, or live
action acting, or whatever else. And he went
on to tell the story about how he just finished
up a voice session for Batman Arkham City. And
I was like, oh, can you tell us who you're playing?
Didn't even know at that point, I don't think
he goes, yeah, I'm, I'm playing the voice of
Mr. Freeze. And I was like, Oh, that's so cool.
Can you give us a sample of the voice? And he
was like, no, sadly not due to NDA. And I'm like,
Oh, okay. I edited that interview so fast and
got it online so fast. Some no name website picked
it up. I don't even know what website it was.
And I, I had already, I had edited it, released
it. and went out with my mom to do errands. So
I, and this is, you know, 2010, 2011, whenever
that, yeah, it was 2011 is when, when Arkham
City came out, somewhere around there. Anyway,
it was about a decade ago or so. So, you know,
back then, Didn't really have a full on like
I don't even remember if I had an iPhone or not
or whatever So basically I it's not like an hour.
I have my Google Pixel 6 Pro and I'm connected
to everything Like, you know, it isn't like oh
you have location services on no not at the moment
You know, it's not like that. It wasn't like
that back then so I Come back home and I see
all these messages from Steve Megatron and about
Maurice LaMarche and about the interview and
this that the other thing And I never asked him
at the end if there was anything he wanted us
to edit out. And I do this every time now on
interviews. I will ask them at the end, is there
anything that you've said in the last X number
of minutes or whatever that you do not want in
the final product? Because this thing blew up
this no name website grabbed it and then IGN
grabbed it because it's a video game and supposedly
IGN is about video games sort of I guess. They
grabbed it it blew up and I'm sitting here thinking
oh my god Maurice LaMarche is gonna fly from
California to Kentucky and he's going to murder
me. And I'm like frantically emailing his agent,
calling his agent, trying to get a hold of him
on Twitter or Facebook or whatever. I'm so sorry.
I'm so sorry. He goes, yeah, there's nothing
you can do about it now. It's out there. Oh my
God. And we've, I've never talked to him since
I've, I've maybe commented on his posts, but
like, I haven't had another interview with him
since then, but that was like our biggest, like,
Oh my God, we've done something that might put.
GCR and on the map kind of thing. I love the
guy to death. I would love to talk to him again.
I would love to have a conversation with him.
I know he's such a sweet, sweet man. They both,
him and Rob both. And every voice actor that
I know that, you know, all of them are just so,
so nice. And they're just, you know, people.
I mean, I think the second interview with Tara
strong that we did, she was in the friggin, uh,
hair salon, getting her hair done. As we were
doing the interview so, you know, they're just
they are regular people even though they're famous
and whatever else But yeah, no, it's it's yeah.
It's just one of those things. Yeah Did you ever
own anything based on a cartoon? So obviously
toys comics coloring books video games, etc why
yes, certainly I had a decent collection of Ninja
Turtles toys, but I Probably a finer accomplishment
was, I think I got all of the Darkwing Duck toys
that Playmates put out. I had the Ratcatcher,
I had the plane, I had the gas gun, and I had
all the individual figures, so I think I got
them all. Okay, Thunder Quack I get. The name
of the plane, I understand that. Why is the motorcycle
called the Rat Catcher? Because he's catching
rats. I guess. I don't ever remember seeing him
catch rats with it. Megavolt? Okay. Oh, well.
I don't think he named it specifically for Megavolt.
I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Thunder
Quack's a way cooler name. Yeah, anyway. Yeah,
absolutely. Well, the Rat Catcher does have a
nice ring to it. Mean it does if you're you know
trying to catch Remy and kick him out of the
restaurant business No No, I tell you man. I
got a thing about rats Yeah, but when I saw her
when I saw ratatouille and you get that scene
with all the rats in the kitchen Like no too
many rats at the kitchen too many rats in the
kitchen We're all we're all Indiana Jones. Yeah,
I didn't have to be rats I mean, I'm Year of
the Rat, 1984, Year of the Rat. So I also consider
it Year of the Turtle, because that is the year
that Ninja Turtles came into being. Yes. Yes.
I guess, technically, I would be Year of the
Empire, because 1980 was strikes back. But anyway.
What is your favorite cartoon theme song? You
can only pick one. They're the world's most fearsome
fighting teens. I I do like the 2012 version
but that original song by Chuck Lor and the other
guy Yeah, it is it slaps forever. It is just
so good. It is so good the only Contender is
Maybe the Darkwing Duck theme song. Oh, absolutely.
I mean quite good I mean you you can't even put
them in the ring together because they are both
so good in their own, right? And on a different
theme is so fun. I mean, why you got to put baloney
in your slacks and why you got Bill Clinton playing
the sax? Like, I get it, but come on. Well, don't
worry, the new version. Well, the new version
does have baloney in their slacks, but. Yeah,
I know. The original version I'm okay with, but
I'm just saying that because of just what it
is. It was some creative rhyming, I will say.
Yeah, and the new version... You know how, and
I've been using this a lot, but if you go...
on any, anyone's like, if, like, if I make a
post right now that I'm recording with you and
you go on Facebook, if you're on Facebook and
you, you go to the GIF section, you search transformers,
ha ha one word space. No, the first thing that
pops up is Devastator shooting a beam out of
his eyes. Ha ha no. And that's how I feel about
the. Modern Animaniacs theme song. I'm sorry.
That's just the way it's just not. All right.
All right. So some other fair contenders. The
Spectacular Spider -Man song is really good.
I mean, there's a lot of good Spider -Man songs
and it might be the best. It's at least the one,
well, it's maybe not the one with the most lyrics.
I think the 60s one might have the most lyrics.
But yeah, I think that one's really great. And
I mean, it just crawls into one's head all the
time. But the DuckTales theme, can you believe
that some version of that song was not going
to include the woohoo? That would have been the
biggest mistake in the history of theme songs.
History of theme songs and history of animation,
because if you don't include that, what's the
point? Yeah, that's the whole hook. I mean, it's
a fine song otherwise, but that's the whole hook,
man. I mean, that's like if you go back and you
re -edit the Goof Troop theme. And you take out
the, yeah. No, the yeah at the end. Yeah, you
take that out and it's like, what's the point?
Like, don't do that. Don't take out that awesome
ending. To the groove, true. Yeah. Yeah. How
big is your animation DVD or digital collection?
Are there any series that you own the entire
set of? I have a lot of animated series on DVD
and Blu -ray, especially if we count Japanese
ones. But American cartoons, I have a lot of
American cartoons. I have every Ninja Turtles
series on DVD. I have the 80s series. I collected
those when they were coming out. I have the 2003
series. I was collecting those when they came
out. I have the 2012 series. I collected those
when they came out. And I have the two discs
of Rise of the TMNT. And digitally, I have the
first three seasons of 2003, and I have all the
episodes of the other ones. And it annoys me
very much that the other seasons of 2003 are
not buyable digitally. Give me a DVD box set
for... Come on, Viacom. You're leaving money
at the table. I mean, it's coming up on 20 years.
It is! 20 years next year. Next year. I need
that 20th anniversary box set. Give it to me.
It is nice that it's at least on Paramount+.
I was just gonna say that. It's the whole reason
I'm subscribed to Paramount+. Exactly, yes. Yeah,
I did enjoy what I saw of Star Trek Lower Decks.
And there's going to be new Ninja Turtles stuff
coming next year, maybe the year after there's
like animated movies featuring the villains.
Yeah, that's something I heard about that, which
sounds promising. So besides turtles, which the
collection is extensive. Spectacular Spider -Man,
Avengers, Earth's Mightiest Heroes. I used to
have all of Justice League, but I had to part
ways with that box set at some point. Why? Money
trouble. Oh, OK. Well, yeah, that's it. And it
was signed by Bruce Tim, man. Oh, no. Very embarrassing
the time I met Bruce Tim. I'm like, Bruce Tim,
I'm a fan of your work. Well, that was awkward
Yeah, so I used I used to have more but uh Yeah,
I have um not all 1 ,000 episodes of one piece.
I probably have about 500 episodes of one piece
Yeah, and I Got a bunch of the Disney cartoons
as they came out Darkwing rescue Rangers Ducktales
They just came out with the full set of Rescue
Rangers, which is nice. Finally having all of
that as opposed to most of it. And I wish they
would do that with Darkwing. Because, yeah, it's
not even that many episodes that didn't come
out on DVD, but it's still... I'm a completionist.
I need it. Speaking of completionists, we never
got the last season of the 2003 Turtles in the
US. They got it in Australia. It's not on Paramount
Plus? It is, it is on Paramount Plus, but they
never put it on DVD. No. They put both, they
put all the Fast Forward on DVD, and let me tell
you, I took my time buying those ones. That wasn't
until many years later that I was like, alright,
I'll go ahead and get the Fast Forward disc.
But, yeah. So I bought the original... Release
of the 80s cartoon and then I did get the the
full season set But like I said, that was mainly
so that I could have it digitally Because otherwise,
you know where we have it Right. Yeah, but yeah
Mostly turtles and a lot of anime Well, this
says it's a repackage but you can get Justice
League the complete series on Amazon for Twenty
seven sixteen fifty five percent off of the MSRP
of sixty dollars. Yeah. So where is that I guess?
I actually had it on DVD so I could upgrade to
the Blu -ray. Yeah that's true. What surprises
me just looking here on Amazon is that they don't
have like they have season one and season two
in Blu -rays and then they have unlimited in
Blu -ray. But they don't have a full -on like
complete box set like the original Yeah DVD like
that's what bugs me probably get around to it
now that they've already re -released Batman
Superman and Batman Beyond Yeah, I did get that
Batman set. Oh And samurai Jack when they released
the whole thing Yeah, you're talking about the
the complete series Batman Beyond set with the
Funko pop No, the original Batman, not the not
beyond. Oh, I will probably pick that up at some
point. Yeah, as soon as I like soon as the Batman
Beyond was like, OK, I haven't had that in however
long and it comes with a metallic Batman Beyond.
Yep, got to have it. Got to have it. So it's
it's still in storage at my dad's. But but yeah.
No, it's it's awesome. Some fun odds and ends.
I picked up SWAT cats Warner Archive released
that I I have the real adventures of Johnny Quest
digitally because that was just the most affordable
way to get it Right, right And it's like I guess
you could still get the DVDs, but it's not like
it's streaming anywhere but yeah, some sometimes
you just gotta Go with the Amazon video because
there's no better options. I was glad to get
SWAT cats actually on disk. That's another sort
of Turtles -y show that I am willing to have
in my life. I mean, one of them was a turtle.
There you go. Barry Gordon. He was also a snork.
He was an all -star snork. Alright, what are...
Oh boy, I am way down the line here. Let's see.
So I think I already know the answer to this,
but which cartoons had the biggest impact on
your life? Yeah, it's definitely Turtles. I don't
think too many cartoons actually affected me.
in significant ways, like for me as a character.
Well, I might have to give some credit to like
the McGee and me video series. Very good morals
in those very good skates. Expectations is the
best one. Hands down, no arguments done. Period.
Stamp of approval to get expectations is the
best one. I like the the art, the art focused
one. You might think someone's better than you,
but there are things only you can do. Yeah, so
it was a fun video series. But Turtles, Turtles
definitely helped form my sense of humor, my
interest in action animation. Obviously things
like Tiny Toons and Animaniacs also factored
into my sense of humor in those 90s. comedies
and also like old Looney Tunes shorts and such
but um but really impacting my life it definitely
would have to be Turtles and I guess to a lesser
extent Pokemon because it was like the first
anime that I was really into and anime is such
a big part of everything I do now but uh Toonami
itself Toonami is a blog Just as a huge thing,
but not in like Not in like an impactful way.
It's just more like um This is something that
I've been talking about for the past 20 years
kind of thing. Yeah, but turtles Turtles was
both both good and bad Because I'm pretty sure
I can trace some uh less than great things back
to ninja turtles and that is my dislike of things
like body horror and my paranoia of chemicals
would definitely trace back to ninja turtles
because there are some unfortunate souls in the
history of ninja turtles that turn into grotesque
things and they might have been popular toys
and i constantly see them And I just can't get
over the trauma the first time I saw those characters.
They just hang with me. It's gross. You ooze,
you lose. Yeah. I mean, you really roll the dice
when you get oozed. Yes. Yes, you do. So yeah.
And ever since then, I've had probably an unhealthy
concern with chemicals like... When I was working
as a airplane Manufacturer and we had all these
chemicals around for cleaning. I was like, oh,
what could this turn me into? Nothing, it might
give you a bad burn if anything. Yeah Toxic waste
isn't that exciting actually not that I know
of any toxic waste This is more like different
kinds of alcohol cleaners Jesus Yeah, it was,
uh, yeah. Ever since Ninja Turtles, I've been
grossed out by body horror and like, and this
also carries over to like X -Men because sometimes
humans have unfortunate superpowers in X -Men
and it's, yeah, that sort of thing. Or you end
up like Senator Kelly in the X -Men movie. That
was, ugh, disturbing. Poor Senator Kelly. Disturbing.
So yeah, there's both good things and bad things
that hang in my mind. Like, I almost can't think
of Ninja Turtles without thinking of these things
I don't want to think about. Which is just crappy.
Just have some Choco Puffs on your pizza, you'll
be fine. I actually did try peanut butter and
chocolate. on a pizza recently uh -huh i mean
this is pretty good yeah nothing too crazy so
when i was living out in washington there was
this place i forget what it was called off top
of my head but they had a peanut butter pickled
cheeseburger pizza now i Was like no pickles
No, no, not even just no take that off. Just
it's like That's like Michelangelo You put anchovies
on this thing. You're in big trouble. Okay You
know same thing like you put pickles on this
pizza. You're in big trouble. Okay So it was
a peanut butter bacon cheeseburger pizza That's
instead of Huh, that sounds all right Yeah, so
I don't like mustard or ketchup. So Well, okay,
but it was just the bacon the burger and the
cheese. There was no mustard. No ketchup. It's
pizza. Remember Well, sometimes they put the
mustard in the ketchup on there for authenticity
Gross only places like Taco Bell tried to do
crap like that Okay, so anyway So, you know,
it's if you did this like with a normal pizza,
it would be the the marinara sauce, the crust,
the cheese, the burger and the bacon. Well, with
this, instead of using marinara sauce, they use
the peanut butter sauce for the base of like.
Yeah, it was so. fucking good. I absolutely loved
it, except half the time when I tried to use
DoorDash to order it after the first time, they're
like, yeah, we're not allowing substitutions.
So I couldn't remove the damn pickles. And I
am sorry. Once you have pickle on anything, even
if you remove the pickle, the taste is still
there. This is absolutely true. Like if they
put a pickle on the side with my fries, I'm like,
I can still taste that pickle. Yeah, I can smell
it a mile away. At the same time, when I was
a kid, I used to love eating midget pickle gherkins,
so I was a weird kid. Anyway, what was the most
money you spent on a cartoon item ever? This
could be a DVD complete series set, a cell, a
print, etc. Well, I haven't gotten any cells,
and I'd probably like to, but I just haven't
really done it. Haven't ever paid too much for
an autographed For an individual item There was
a small Megas XLR Figurine that was sold on the
Cartoon Network store for probably like 15 bucks
many years later I bought that off eBay from
some guy for like $80 and that was a Questionable
choice I might say but I really wanted that figure
and I had expendable income but Probably the
thing I have spent the most on a single item
was I did pick up the arcade one up Ninja Turtles
arcade for like $450. Oh, wow. Yeah. Yeah. If
the Cowabunga collection had come out any sooner,
I probably wouldn't have. done that but at the
time there was no other way to play the arcade
games legally other than going to an arcade or
buying an actual arcade so it seemed like a reasonable
comparison but it was still like the most ridiculous
purchase I feel like I've ever made so there's
that And then they came out with a better version
that has Wi -Fi included for an extra $200. It's
like, I'm not paying an extra $200 for something
I just paid $450 for. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. But
thank goodness for the Cowabunga collection,
so you don't have to. Yep. There have only ever
been two cabinets that I've ever wanted to have
in wherever place I was living. And they're enormous
cabinets. That would be the turtles for turtles
in time because let's face it, we all love that
game. I love it to death. Yeah. And the original
Star Wars trilogy, the full on sit down surrounds
like literally. I hear lightsabers and blasters
coming out of speakers that are like right behind
like that sit down cabinet, that big display
thing that has to be projected onto a wall or
a script. Like literally those have only ever
been the only two arcade games I have ever wanted
to have at wherever I was living. Will I ever
have either one of them? Hell no, because I will
be in this one -bedroom apartment until I die.
Hopefully that's in the next, you know, 20, 30
years or so, I guess. Maybe. I don't know. You
know, it's just one of those things where, I
don't know. I barely have room for this thing.
Yeah, exactly. And it's smaller than the actual
cabinet. Yeah, you know. Those mini cabinets
that Walmart sells now, I'm like, huh? Yeah,
those are cute for things like Pac -Man. The
ones for tabletops. Those are alright. They're
alright. Do you have a, my parents wouldn't let
me watch that cartoon story? I sure do. Because
my parents at some point forbade me from watching
Ren and Stimpy, but my grandparents would watch
it with me. Your parents have excellent taste
your grandparents. I'm not so sure You know like
my grandparents They let me watch Ren and Stimpy.
They would show me recordings of Beanie and Cecil
and some other old cartoons So I think they generally
had good taste in cartoons Beanie and Cecil are
awesome. Yeah, Bob Clampett good stuff Which
They probably like Ren and Stimpy because it's
heavily inspired by those kinds of cartoons.
But also with a heavy dose of, oh, look at how
gross we can make this. Yeah, honestly, at the
end of the day, I liked Rocco's Modern Life a
lot more than Ren and Stimpy. I don't think there
was ever a point where my parents said, you can't
watch The Simpsons, but I don't think I really
did watch it until... I was at least 10 or so.
And I was I was a very good boy. I kind of self
regulated. So like I was aware of Beavis and
Butthead in South Park and I might have caught
a moment of them. But I mean, like this is something
my parents would not want me watching. Oh, so
I'm not going to watch it. And when Adult Swim
came along. Was not quite an adult yet, and I
took that like Overly seriously, so I was like
hey, but I'm a dad I know I'm not quite 18 yet,
but there's these animated series late at night
It's okay if I watch them. They're like yeah.
Yeah, that's fine. You're 17. Don't worry about
it And I was I was 17 watching Aqua Teen Hunger
Force and R .V. Birdman and Yu Yu Hakusho on
Saturday nights. Cowboy Bebop. Inuyasha. That
was the big thing. Yu Yu Hakusho at 11 p .m.
on Saturday nights was like, it's only 11 p .m.
I can still wake up in time for church. It's
okay. It'll be okay. Yeah, so I mostly self -regulated.
But yeah, the Ren and Stiffy thing always sticks
with me. Because to this day, I think my grandparents
were very cool about that. Very cool, very cool.
What is your opinion on cartoon reboots and which
ones do you think have been the most successful?
Oh gee, I wonder. I like all the new versions
of the Ninja Turtles. I feel very blessed that
I feel like every version of Ninja Turtles that
has come out since my childhood is at least watchable.
I thought the 2003 series was fantastic. I thought
the 2012 series was fantastic. And I do think
Rise of the TMNT is good in its own way. If nothing
else, it has absolutely amazing animation and
is probably the funniest Ninja Turtles since
the 80s cartoon. Really? Yeah, they Okay, first
of all, you got Donatello who's got way more
of an ego than he has ever had and he's very
sardonic and his line delivery is just so good
and Then you have the Leonardo's a real loose
cannon and you have the most fun splinter there's
ever been Some people don't like that about it,
but I can kind of roll with Hamato Yoshi who's
a big screw -up as opposed to a, you know, actually
responsible person. You know, like, we had this
big responsibility to seal away the Shredder
and keep him sealed away, and you were supposed
to train all these years. Oh yeah, I didn't do
that. Well, now we have a problem. And that version
of the Shredder is just an unhinged demon, which
is kinda neat. And they all relate it back to
the Hamato clan in cool ways. But yeah, the action
animation in that show is just the best Ninja
Turtles has ever looked, which is saying something.
I mean, if you go back and you look at the...
Nah, I'm not gonna do that. But I always thought
the 2012 show had good fluid animation, even
if you weren't really keen on the CG. And it
was also very expressive, the character faces.
A 2003 show is kind of stiff, actually, especially
in the later seasons. But in the earlier seasons,
it looked pretty good. They definitely cut corners.
You can see that when you rewatch it. But, you
know, it had a nice style to it, which I think
goes a long way. Another reboot that I thought
was really good was the DuckTales. I thought
that the 2017 DuckTales was really good. I also
At least warmed up to what they did with Darkwing
Duck. I wasn't entirely on board with that, but
I think overall it was a fine choice for Doing
a new version of Darkwing Another reboot that
I thought Probably Transformers Prime and I know
other other people have said things about GI
Joe renegades, but I actually like that one But
I'm not not too beholden to GI Joe to be honest
And that's the funny thing about all these cartoons
and eventually we will be covering GI Joe real
American hero the original 80s cartoon on this
podcast, but the funny thing about GI Joe is
is that It's only had several like It isn't like
Transformers where there's one every five, six,
seven, eight, nine, ten years or... You know,
I think the military thing is probably why that
is. Obviously. Yes, obviously. You know, I'm
not trying to sit here and not, you know, say
that, but I'm saying like, you know, it didn't
have this effect on me. But what if watching
G .I. Joe in the 80s, had it had an effect on
some on some male child, some 10 year old. Oh,
mom and dad, I want to be in the army so I can
fight the bad guys. You know, you know what I
mean? Like, I'm sure that it did. And that's
fine. But, you know, it is it is what it is.
The toys alone definitely did that. Yeah, yeah,
absolutely. Which cartoons? Yeah, I'm trying
to think of some other reboots that I think the
Voltron legendary defender, I thought that was
pretty good. Good old Josh Keaton in that. Yup.
And Shiro. I just started rewatching that. So
my buddy Joe Reed and I covered the first two
seasons a number of years ago now. Because of
my spectacular spider -man watch through i've
had this josh keaton kick in my brain so much
legendary defender i never actually watched.
The entire series so i think i'm in the middle
of season one episode two at this point and they're
still learning and it's kind of before. The whole
zarkon thing and that show man. The only thing
in that show so far and I don't know if this
changes because I I never made it past season
two and honestly I've recorded that podcast So
damn long ago. I don't remember what the hell
we said in it Rewatch I'm only two episodes in
I want to shoot Koran I want to take Voltron
sword and cut his voice box out And I know this
is supposed to be your origin episode, and I'm
not trying to take away from it, but oh my God,
just because I've recently started to rewatch
this thing, I've had to tell somebody, even though
I know I could tell it online, whatever, but
it's much easier in a podcast to say this. I
fucking hate legendary defender Karan. Peter
Cullen was the superior Karan. Well, I mean,
I'm not going to argue otherwise. Truly a legend.
Have you, have you watched any of his recent
NASA videos? I was like, you can't convince me
that's not a Toonami promo. No, I haven't. I'll
have to check those out. It's Peter Cohen talking
about space and the wonders of space. I was like,
this, this, this is just Toonami. Now they did,
you know, I should have mentioned Peter Cohen
earlier with the voice actors because obviously
Peter Cohen. I mean, yeah, you know. Yeah, I
mean I what is it Reese Darviz is I think I said
that right as as Koran Yeah, I guess I don't
know. I just I think he's doing shit He's good
in some roles, but he's he's a he's a bit much
just Like the Koran character in legendary defender
so far in the first like I said I'm like like
five six seven eight minutes into the second
episode of the first season right now And I have
seen this show before, but I don't remember it.
So in this show, and as you know, because your
memory is better than mine, he gets up in your
face and they try to do like, he does these freak
outs where the animation tries to make him look
like he has his eyes bugging out of his head.
Like, no, stop. You are not the Ren and Stimpy
of the Voltron cartoons. You're not. Don't do
that. Knock it off and just behave. Anyway. Oh
God. So. Yeah. Which cart, which cartoon series
from the past would you most want to see more
of whether it be a reboot live action movie or
any other form of media? Now I will put a caveat
on this because. I have always wanted to see
what they would do now today. With 1984 animation
for G1, like if you were going to take G1 from
the rebirth, which is the final three episodes
of the United States airing of the show. If you
were going to take, you know, move on from that
story, but I would want to see that in the same
1984 animation, but for you. Which one from which
cartoon series from the past would you most want
to see more of? today Well, there was definitely
a time when I would have instantly said spectacular
spider -man But given my feelings towards young
justice, which is the same showrunner I don't
think Tad stones would Keep Greg Wiseman from
Greg Wiseman in a little too hard and even the
second season of that show They tried to cram
in too much, so I'm concerned at what direction
that show would actually go in if they made more,
but I mean, I'd still probably take it, at least
over other Spider -Man cartoons. But two wonderful
giant robot shows that were sadly cut short.
Genndy Tartakovsky's Symbionic Titan. It's so
good, such a good sci -fi animated series. that
Cartoon Network unfortunately did not support.
And I would love to see more of that. And I would
always love to see more of Megas XLR from the
creators were Jody Schafer and George Christic.
And who was the other guy involved with that
at Titmouse? Titmouse didn't actually make the
show. They only made the intro. But the the people
that They were doing that. Yeah Megas XLR is
another giant robot show the Cartoon Network
did not support well enough and I really would
love to see it come back, but I There's legal
nonsense that makes both of those shows very
unlikely to ever Get more which is painful Another
spider -man show that I'd really like at least
some closure would be the 94 Spider -Man. I see
they're doing the 90s X -Men, they're doing X
-Men 97, and it kind of gives me a little bit
of hope that maybe we'll finally see what happens
after Spider -Man goes on his journey to find
Mary Jane. Though there are notes, I am aware
of what has been said about what they were going
to do. Yes, and I frankly don't know how I feel
about those things, but I still I haven't closure
Yeah, I have not seen that. I am friends with
John Semper jr. I did interview the guy during
the 20th anniversary of spider -man in 2014 But
yeah, I I have not seen his notes or whatever
that The reason why I don't want that is because
Stan and Joan aren't here anymore. Now Stan,
okay fine, he's in the real world fine, but Joan
Lee was the voice of Madame Webb. There are certain
voice actors where that voice is that voice.
Peter Cullen's Optimus Prime, Generation One
Optimus Prime. There are plenty of sound -alikes
and imitators and people who will try to do a
Peter Cullen, you know, but you take something
like, oh, what's one voice? Well, perfect example
is 87 Donatello, Barry Gordon. That's just his,
that's how he talks. He's not putting on a voice.
That's how he talks. There is nobody else that
could do like, if you're, if you're going to
get a Donatello for a new series, you're going
to get, it's going to be somebody else. It's
going to sound like something else. It's never
going to be Barry Gordon unless you get Barry
Gordon. And the same thing with Joan Lee as Madam
Webb is that. Do I, do I, do I agree with you?
Yes. I agree with you in the sense that I would
love to have closure. However, I would want Marvel
to give John the chance to write maybe a one
-shot or something. Oh, comic. Yeah, because
in comics, I can have her voice in my head. Yeah,
that's a good point. Face front, true believer,
we're going to go find the real Mary Jane Watson.
You know, like, you know. I can deal with that.
I can handle that. I can, I can have that in
my head. I don't have to worry about the fact
that Chris summer is trying. I'm not saying anything
against Chris summer. I'm saying her name because
she was, um, Hagar in legendary defender. Like,
you know, you know, it's just. If it was another
voice, if it was another person. If Madame Webb
did not have that moment, sort of, with Spider
-Man at the end where, you know, he comes back
and he's like, you know, that Stan Lee sure is
an amazing guy, whatever he says. And then she
says, yes. Or is that exotic woman? Yeah, exactly.
Like, you know, and again, it's because they
intentionally, and I love that they did this,
intentionally made them. Made Stan Lee the animated
character and the madam web like I have her funko
pop It's still in a box currently, but I like
literally they need to out of all the Stan Lee's
funko has released We need a 1994 Stanley, you
know what whatever but anyway, yeah, no, it's
it it's so yeah All right. Wait, there's more.
There's more. There's Avengers Earth's Mightiest
Heroes. Give me more of that. Give me more Green
Lantern animated series. There actually was a
little something for that in the new season of
Young Justice. I don't know how I feel about
them putting that in Young Justice, but it was
nice to catch up with one of those characters.
But yeah, I really like the Green Lantern show.
I would have loved to see more of that. And Earth's
Mightiest Heroes was so good. Give me back the
Yoast verse. Give it back. I want it back. I
Mean not really making another Avengers cartoon
right now. So why not? The Yoast verse what is
Chris what is Yoast? Is a show producer. He actually
has written a lot of MCU movies. Oh Cool. Yeah,
but he was he was a He was a writer producer
on Avengers are his mightiest heroes, and I believe
he was involved in Wolverine and the X -Men.
Not so much spectacular Spider -Man, but... Right,
right. Well, you mentioned Yost, and I'm like,
what does Billy the Blue Ranger have to do? Yeah,
what does Billy Cranston have to do with anything?
Yeah, exactly. Yeah, not David Yost. Chris Yost.
Yes, Chris Yost. Comic and television writer.
Chris Yost. It's David's brother or cousin or
whatever. Not really. No, I'm just making that
up. Uh, what is he, uh, who knows? What is, what
is your opinion of the cartoon sidekick? Snarf,
Orko, T Bob and Scott from mask, uh, cartoon
sidekicks from the nineties. Uh, technically
I guess you could say lunch pad, but lunch pad
was an okay sidekick. in Darkwing Duck, but essentially
sidekick characters. What is your opinion of
them? I feel like there's many categories. I
mean, there's the mascot, like Slimer, and then
there's the sidekick, like Launchpad, and then
there's the kid characters, like Gosselin, and
I don't think Gosselin is a bad kid character.
I think Gosselin and Honker were fine. I think
Huey Dooley and Louie were fine. Webby? Not so
much. Why be this kind of annoying? Kid Codkicker?
Cool. Molly? No, they made Molly very annoying.
I think maybe it's because I am a boy, but these
female characters were awfully annoying. Well,
the thing of it is that as cartoons progressed
from the 80s into the previous decade and now
the current decade, see, in the 80s, folks, Where
you had people like me who were seven years old
and watched all the He -Man stuff and reruns
even though I watched it Before then when it
was actually airing, you know regular so Orcos
all right, man. Yeah. Well, yeah or goes Whatever
is what it is He's not the worst 80s kid or sidekick.
Anyway, the point is is that Starting in like
82 83 going forward Like with He -Man and She
-Ra, He -Man was for the boys, She -Ra was for
the girls. So with something like DuckTales with
Webby, the Huey, Dewey and Louie are for the
boys, Webby's supposed to be for the girls. Instead
of having to then say, oh, we're going to do
DuckTales 2017 until 2019. And then in 2019 -
Webby's fun in that one. It's the Webby show.
Yeah. Yeah. But then even at the same time, you
know, like you got Gadget on Rescue Rangers,
great character. You had the female gummy bears.
They were cool. Yeah. Yeah. They were cool. So,
you know, it's it's not all the same. And I had
no problem with Gosselin. I thought I like I
like the dynamic of Gosselin, her her father,
Drake Mallard and all that. That's that's fine.
I was never a big fan of like kids hanging out
with the heroes of like Transformers shows, particularly
Transformers Armada. Those kids were terrible,
especially Carlos. Everybody like Carlos. Matt
Hill doing a really not great accent. Mr. Ed
himself doing a not great accent. I, you know,
then didn't get those. Matt Hill, I love the
man. I had a chance to interview him years ago
now and every once in a while I'll comment on
it on his posts and whatever. But Matt Hill will
always be two characters in my mind. He will
be the guy in the suit for Turtles because he
was the guy in the suit for Turtles 3, I believe.
And he will always be the voice of Captain N,
the Game Master. Oh yeah, he was Captain N. That's
right. And again, that's one of those voices
where it's essentially his own, like, literally,
I remember when we did that interview, because
you never know when you do interviews, like,
again, you take somebody like Rob Paulson or
Maurice Lamarr short, if you've never heard them
before, outside of the voices they do, you don't
know what they're going to sound like. And that
was this one night that we had the interview
with Matt Hill and I was like, What's he gonna
sound like? I don't even know and then the first
thing as soon as I connected the call I'm like
to my co -host. I think I think I think Neil
Neil Purcell did this with me. I'm like, okay
Neil, are you here? Yep. I'm here Matt. Are you
here? Hi, this is yeah, I'm mad I'm here and
literally it's like Captain ends like right like
he's not even trying to be the character. He
just that's his voice again. It's one of those
Barry Gordon aspect thing. What did you think
he would sound like Ed? I don't know. I don't
know. At least he doesn't sound like next mutation
Raphael. Oh, man. Why wasn't he Michelangelo?
Would have been a way better voice for my well
actually I like curvy Maros Michelangelo may
rest in peace I Would rather take the singing
voice of Raphael on coming out of their shells
the next mutation Raphael Yeah, I thought the
singing voice was pretty good. That's what I'm
saying That's what I mean. Yeah anyway Album
so much so much so Do you still have the original
cassette album? Like it's only... You know, I
think I might have the cassette somewhere. Okay.
I might. Do you have a full -on stereo mono version
of it? Where it's at? So here's the thing, folks.
I think I have a digital copy. Okay, but anyway,
this is what I'm saying. Here's the thing. I
have had the... album coming out of their shells
for the longest time. For the longest time, it
was just like it was back when it released, which
is it's in one year. It's only in one year. Cause
it was only recorded on one side or whatever,
whatever that, whatever the tech, I forgot the
sound. So I'm like, Steve, I'm like Steve Megatron.
Like I can do a lot of things with audio editing
and things like that, but there are some things
I can not do. I'm like, look, this is coming
out of my left speaker. I want it coming out
of the left and right speaker. So he did whatever
magical audio thing he did. And I now have a
full, like literally, literally I have it. I
have the local files linked in my Spotify. I
can go play it on my phone after we record this.
And I most likely will now that I'm talking about
it. But if you don't have something that plays
it out of both speakers, I'm telling you, we
can talk later. That's right. That's right. You
can count on us. You can count on us. That's
right. In your opinion, which decade represents
the quote unquote Golden era of cartoons and
why 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s 2000s or 2010s I Feel
like it's the 90s and the main reason I say that
is because that was the time when a lot more
creator driven Cartoons were getting made that
was right the early Nick tunes and Some of the
early Cartoon Network shows, all of those, they
had a specific creative vision and they weren't
just cartoons by committee. I think for that
reason in particular, where we're getting away
from telling stories to sell toys and we're finally
really letting a creator make the show they wanna
make. You know, with some restrictions, usually
for the better because we see what happens when
they're unrestricted. And I'm looking at you,
Ren and Stimpy. But yeah, I think I think that
part of me wants to say like the 2000s, maybe
more so. But I think it's probably got to be
the 90s because you also have Batman, the animated
series, which took what we thought. was possible
with an action animation show and just like blew
the top off of it. Like everything before that
pales in comparison to what they did with Batman,
the animated series. So and then also, I think
some of the best animated comedies were from
the 90s. So, yeah, and also a lot of the the
best like prime time animation came out. in that
era too. Though a lot did come out in the 2000s.
But I feel like, well, it's probably the 90s.
And over on the Japanese side, like some of the
all -time classics came out in the 90s. Like,
people tell you if there's any anime you need
to see, if you've never watched any other anime,
it's Cowboy Bebop by Shinichiro Watanabe. Shinichiro
Watanabe. He, uh, it is... like film noir, space
cowboy, sci -fi. It's such a great show to introduce
people who have never seen Japanese animation
before. And that came out in the 90s among lots
of other things like Dragon Ball Z came out in
the technically late 80s, but mostly in the 90s.
Yeah. Sailor Moon came out in the 90s. Pokemon
came out in the 90s. So the 90s was just such
a big, big era. But, of course, I can't discredit,
like, what they were doing in the 50s. Like,
those were sensational. And, you know, you can
still watch them today and they're still entertaining.
Even, like, even those flight, the Flesher Superman
shorts are really good. Really good. Yeah. And
yeah, but I think 90s. I know a lot of you guys
are very beholden to the 80s, but maybe because
I was born in 84 and didn't really watch cartoons
until 87. Yeah, see, that's the thing. You know,
that's yeah. You were born in the 80s, but you
grew up in the 90s kind of thing. Whereas, you
know, people who were born in, say, 79, 80, 81,
82, we were born. In those whatever which every
year you wanna pick but we still grew up in the
eighties and the nineties kind of thing and i
agree with you i mean you know i personally would
say eighties because of all of the cartoons for
me that were. Then what i've noticed is the trends
changing from. Week day afternoons and saturday
mornings to cartoon blocks to. having various
shows at various times. The reason why it only
goes from the 50s to the 2010s is because we're
only two years into the 2020s. This decade isn't
even done yet, so who the hell knows what's going
to happen when we hit 2029. I'm going to make
it that long. because a lot of you guys brought
up syndication which is a big a big factor there
like in the 80s there was a lot of syndication
that's how i saw a lot of the like the hannah
barbera cartoons but in the 90s the early cable
years you could see so much animation it was
blessed yeah it was everywhere it was on hbo
it was on this that and the other thing nickelodeon
cartoon network They had blocks on TNT USA Cartoon
Express like the cartoons were everywhere and
That is the reason why I was able to see so many
cartoons. Well before I was born and That's another
reason why I might say the 2000s might be slightly
better in that regard, because the sampling by
the 2000s was very, very wide, but still probably
into the 90s. Some people view cartoons as something
for children and don't view animation as a serious
form of media that adults should consume. Who
should cartoons be made for, in your opinion?
You see, that is a almost strictly American line
of thinking. In other parts of the world, in
France, in Asia, in other parts of Europe, even
in Latin America, animation's more so for everybody.
There's not that kind of stigma that cartoons
are just for kids, or if they're not just for
kids, then they're like Family Guy or The Simpsons.
Right, yeah. In that respect, I truly believe
that animation is for everybody. Animation is
a fantastic medium to tell any kind of story,
whether it's everyday stuff or workplace comedy.
I love animated workplace comedies. I think those
are great. And you can relate to people on so
many levels with animation. Storytelling through
animation that I really feel like it's a limitless
possibility So yeah, absolutely animations for
everybody I do think that there are cartoons
that are specifically made for children And I
don't think that's a problem particularly if
they're like, you know preschool age cartoons
I mean, that's you know, that's all though those
should exist It should be a gradual scale, but
I think some of the best cartoons the cartoons
that appeal to the broadest range are the ones
that are acceptable for kids to watch, but appealing
to everybody else. And I think a lot of cartoons
manage that just fine. And now in the streaming
age, there's even less of a concern about only
targeting to kids. But at the same time, I still
feel like there should be more specifically Targeting
older audiences than they're currently is in
production a lot of times. It's just comedy there
have been some dramas some action shows like
invincible But even that you know heavy dose
of comedy Vox Machina heavy dose of comedy and
Some of the other stuff and then you have Gendi
Tartakovsky's primal which is a drama that almost
has no talking for the entirety of nine episodes
and wow yeah it's coming back for another season
now it's it's a beautiful show is very expressive
despite not really having dialogue and it is
definitely not for kids because it is brutally
violence and it is really straight -up badass
and I want to see more that kind of thing more
like creepy cartoons for older audiences more
I'm not really big fan of horror honestly but
I mean I like to see all these genres explored
any given season of anime in Japan there's like
oh half a dozen shows set in high school or junior
high where young people are just palling around
which can be entertaining but I generally prefer
to find the shows that are more about older characters,
people in college, people in the workplace, that
kind of thing. So there's just such a broad range
of content out there outside of the US, as well
as a growing amount of content in the US that
shows that animation is for everybody. So animation
is for everybody. You can make shows for kids,
but why not make it for everybody? Yeah, and
that's the answer everybody is given to that
question. I mean cuz honestly, you're right There's
something here for everyone at every age level
no matter what I mean, I think the only Okay,
well it wasn't right it wasn't really a preschool
or kindergarten cartoon or anything like that
But like Muppet Babies and like Berenstain Bears
are the two like young kid eighties cartoons
I can think of off the top of my head kind of
thing, you know. But, you know, it is what it
is. And you're right. And the reason why that's
phrased that way is because when I wrote that
question out, you know, when it says some people
view cartoons as something for children or whatever,
or some people view it as not something for children.
I was thinking of all those old dumb ass senators
and politics, like all of those things in the
eighties where it's like, Oh my God, the cartoon
violence is so bad. Oh my God. We must stop cartoon.
Are you kidding? They rarely use their weapons.
Okay, yeah, but that's why the red lasers and
the blue lasers shoot over the head of the villain.
That's right. No direct hits. They can't hit.
Yeah, but I mean, well, I mean, there are a couple,
whatever, but then, and of course there is the
classic fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight,
fight, you know, hammer and knife and nail and
whatever. Good old Tom and Jerry cartoon violence.
Yeah, I was, you're right. I was thinking more
of Itchy and Scratchy when I said fight, fight,
fight, fight, fight, fight, fight. I'm thinking
of Marge's campaign against, uh, against Itchy
and Scratchy in the early seasons of The Simpsons.
Cause again, that was a thing back then. Like,
you know, parents were going after these cartoon
people. Because the cartoons were so - and nowadays
it's like, oh no, we'll put anything we want
on Netflix. Eh, we'll put parental controls and
then we'll leave it in your hands. Like it's
- Parents don't care, now it's, uh, young adults
that have nothing better to do but complain about
cartoons to the creators of said cartoons. Complain,
complain. You know, when life gives you lemons
- I COMPLAIN ABOUT THE LEMONS! And look. Have
I expressed negative opinions about cartoons?
Yes, everyone has, but I am not good. If it's
something that I don't like, I am not going to
sit here and waste my time on Twitter, Facebook,
Instagram, TikTok, whatever, and go to a creator
and get in their face and say, Hey, I think your
insert cartoon name here is really, really ugly,
dumb, shitty. What, you know, like. I'll talk
about how I don't give a shit and I think it
Ren and Stimpy is disgusting as all hell But
I'm not gonna go to John Kay and sit like you
know, but he totally deserves it Okay. Well,
that's fine Bad example. Yeah, but you know what
I'm saying though, like don't get me wrong He
is a human being almost on the levels of Bill
Cosby kind of thing. But like You know, I don't
know. And it is what it is as far as very, but
my point is, is that if I like, oh my God, I
can't get used to the fact that you have Darkwing
Duck, the actor, which is Jim Cummings, and you
have Darkwing Duck, the person, which is a completely
different voice. I can get used to that. And
that's fine. I may not like the voice that is
coming out of Darkwing Duck, the, the, you know,
separate from, you know what I mean? Like that
was, that threw me off. Cause again, I've only
seen very and the Darkwing cause hello, it's
Darkwing Duck and that's the only Darkwing we've
gotten since the original series. So I was never
not going to miss that. Yeah. So yeah. Yeah.
All right. We are now entering the cartoon fantasy
land, so anything said in here is all pretend
and make -believe. Imagine you're on trolley
and you're going through Mr. Rogers' little tunnel
into the land of make -believe. Yeah, I don't
think Mr. Roger would approve of some of these
upcoming answers. No, probably not. Any vehicle
featured in a cartoon, which would it be and
why? Well, I'm tempted to say a Gundam mobile
suit because those things are really cool. Megas,
the robot from Megas XLR, which is a futuristic
robot that has been modified to have a bunch
of video game stuff inside of it. And the head
is a muscle car. I want that. I want I want Megas.
Okay, that thing is way cool. Oh It has like
a cannon in its chest, which is a reference to
star blazers. Oh Wow. Yeah, I Love it. I love
it Awesome. Awesome. If you could live in any
cartoon world that you wanted, where would you
live and why? Right. I thought about this a lot.
I like Let me be clear, I definitely don't want
to live in the world of Ninja Turtles because
1 -Mutagen and life is crappy. But I would like
to live in a world where there's superpowers.
And that would maybe lead me to One Piece because
I don't think anybody has gotten superpowers
that are, like, unfortunate in One Piece so much.
But One Piece is also a story where... there's
like this whole lost history of the world situation
going on and the uh powers that be are like real
scary so i don't think i want to live in that
society either also they don't have they don't
have like the creature comforts that i have come
to appreciate in life such as television and
blu -ray box sets and streaming and video games
and all of that. So I want to live in a world
where there are superpowers and we got cool entertainment
to enjoy because that's what I'm about. So my
choice is the world of an anime called Tiger
and Bunny. It's on Netflix. In that world, people
are kind of like the X -Men. They can develop
superpowers, but. Unlike in the X -Men, it doesn't
seem like anybody ever gets the raw deal on that
one. So you can get cool superpowers, maybe,
not necessarily, but they have a pretty advanced
level of technology and it just seems like a
cool place to be. Also, Josh Keaton is in the
second season playing a character that is very
Batman -like. Which is a good time. So yeah,
my answer would be Tiger and Bunny. You can watch
both seasons on Netflix. See what I'm talking
about. Awesome. Very cool, very cool. Okay, so
you are yourself, obviously. Who would be your
top three toon pals to join you and become a
quartet? Man, I can't leave out one of the Ninja
Turtles. That's just cruel. I would have a harder
time picking which turtle I like the least. versus
which turtle I like the most. Though, for a time,
Michelangelo was my favorite, particularly in
childhood. But I think I would not hang out with
a Ninja Turtle because, realistically, that would
probably get me Salmonella. And that's not cool,
dude. So I'm going to pick two members of the
Straw Hat Pirates from One Piece. Luffy, the
protagonist, who also has rubber powers. I didn't
mention that before. He has like, Mr. Fantastic
powers. Which is kind of neat. He can stretch
and do all kinds of rubbery things with his body.
Yes, everything. Not that they ever really explore
that, but... Thank God. Somebody asked the author
about that one time. He says, yeah, everything
stretches. Alright. And the navigator of the
crew, Nami. because I need her to keep Luffy
in line and also I like her very very much. I
feel like I should have somebody smart that can
like invent cool stuff, but for a smart character,
and though I'm tempted to go with Donatello,
but for the reasons that I skipped on Michelangelo,
I will not do Donatello either. I think Spider
-Man. Spider -Man would be nice to hang out with.
Ha, hang. Yeah I know not every version of spider
-man is quite the same level of genius but I
mean some of them are like as smart as Tony Stark
so I Think I think that's a good good choice
to go with So yeah to two members of the straw
hat pirates from one piece and spider -man that's
my that's my team Very cool. Very cool If you
could date any cartoon character, which one would
it be and why? Obviously, for many years, I had
a crush on April O 'Neill. And because of that,
I have always had an interest in redheads. Girls
with orange or red hair. And Nami has orangish
red hair. And I think she's very lovely. And
I would want to date her. She would do a good
job of keeping me in line She's a no -nonsense
kind of gal. Very cool. Very cool What is the
holy grail of cartoon artifacts? The Sword of
Omens, The Matrix of Leadership, The Power Sword
from He -Man, etc. You know, The Power Sword
from He -Man seems like a pretty good choice.
You know, you pick that thing up and you're filled
with massive power. So I could kind of roll with
that. But I think I probably want to go with
something that could like grant me any kind of
wish that I would care for. So... There's a lot
of different things in media and animation that
if you have it, grant you a wish, bad things
are gonna happen. I don't think that's necessarily
the case with the Dragon Balls from Dragon Ball.
there's seven of them magical orbs you collect
them all summon the dragon you can wish for all
manner of things you can bring somebody back
to life you can send somebody to another planet
you can get massive riches you can become immortal
or invincible or any number of things and if
we're retconning dragon ball gt as we should
because it's garbage uh nothing bad comes from
using the dragon balls In GT, they kind of explore
the possibility of something bad happening from
using the Dragon Balls, but I'm just ignoring
that. So I'm gonna say the Dragon Balls. I think
Dragon Balls would be pretty cool to have. Alright.
We are now exiting the cartoon fantasy land,
and the final question, sir. What is one piece
of advice that you'd give the cartoon fandom
in general? You said one piece. Ha ha that's
my advice watch one piece all one thousand plus
episodes of it no, but seriously Chill out Yeah,
it's good to be passionate. I appreciate passion,
but there is too much passion sometimes you gotta
You gotta chill out let people enjoy what they
enjoy You know by all means promote the things
that you like and try to encourage other people
to check them out but don't like beat people
over the head with it you know if people don't
want to check it out they don't have to you certainly
don't have to look into everything out there
either you know just yeah to to quote bill and
ted be excellent to each other yes please you
know there's just there's there's so much There's
so much animosity in animation fandom and it's
so needless. Can't we all just get along? Get
along. Yeah. Yeah. And I think that's between
any of these Origins episodes, that's always
the last question, whichever fandom it is, whether
it's Transformers, whether it's comics, whether
it's cartoons, whether it's podcasting. whether
it's, uh, well, not really the podcasting one,
but whether it's, you know, master the universe,
you know, what's the one piece of advice you
would give. And that's really what most of all
of us have said is because there is just it's
animosity animation, but it's also animosity
and, and, and other things in every other fandom.
And it just, it just sucks at times. And it's
like, stop. It's like Robin Williams said the
whole point of sucking the marrow out of life
is that you don't choke on the bone I almost
went with the genie's lamp by the way, cuz wouldn't
it be fun to hang out with genie? I didn't even
think because again when we wrote this I was
writing it with a fellow 80s and yeah, I mean
and it honestly Seriously, it could be any cartoon
artifact that that has been in any man. I don't
need the matrix of leadership Yeah, nobody needs
that burden. Yeah, nobody needs that burden.
Oh, burden hardest to bear. Oh, boy. All right.
My other advice is, it's cool to enjoy cartoons.
Don't sweat it. Yes. Cartoons, animation is for
everyone. Yep, absolutely. All right, we're going
to head to a quick break. But before we do that,
would you like to be on the Origins episodes

which is a block that airs Saturday nights on
Adult Swim on Cartoon Network from midnight to
4 a .m That'll be currently airing the second
season of Gendi Tartakovsky's primal, which is
again very good and people should watch it That's
it midnight Yes Obviously most kids aren't going
to be up from midnight to four a .m. So thankfully
Cartoon Network has a section of their day or
night or whatever you want to call it to dedicate
to the adult viewer of cartoons and especially
putting anime on that late. It's kind of like,
hey, let's grab some popcorn and Okay, anime
is not horror, but I'm going to say let's grab
some popcorn and have a horror movie Friday night
or something So sometimes they do horror. They're
actually developing a horror show for this upcoming
fall that's about a creepy things happening at
a housing complex called housing complex C and
Uzumaki, which is based on Junji Ito's famous
manga Uzumaki, that's uh, that's been delayed
many times because they're trying to do this
black -and -white animation style and it looks
gorgeous But it's gonna take a long time to make
so that's not coming out until sometime next
year. Oh Wow, yeah, very cool Very cool. So check
out the tsunami faithful podcast with Andrew
and all of his tsunami pals very very awesome

Actually, we will be giving you our thoughts
on this, but my friends, Eduardo and Patricia,
she's actually making her GCRN debut, but it's
his wife. They are jumping in the car with me,
Plucky, and Hampton. and we're gonna talk about
how we spent our vacation. Oh, man. So it's the
middle of summer, folks. It's the middle of July.
What do you do in July? You talk about a vacation
movie that has nothing to do with Chevy Chase.
You talk about the Tiny Toons, how I spent my
vacation. Now, I have been researching this.
in order to prepare for this, and right now currently
how I spent my vacation is streaming on Hulu.
However, I always remembered it as TinyToon Adventures
how I spent my summer vacation. How I spent my
summer vacation because I thought that is what
it was titled at one point or another, and it
was, except they removed it. In order to basically
have it apply to any and all vacations Because
they eventually go back to school because the
whole point in the beginning of the thing is
they're waiting on technically summer vacation
because they're you know waiting on the clock
to tick down and tick down and three o 'clock
and you know, what you do in in school and Then
obviously close to the end of the movie. They
maybe rich. I don't remember what the end of
the movie is. I I know Just based off of memory,
Plucky and Hampton end up in some weird version
of Wally World. It's not Wackyland, it's something
else. I'm sure you'll say it here in a minute
as soon as I let you talk. But yeah, so that's
coming up next. And what is the weird Wally World
amalgam for Plucky and Hampton? I think it is
Wackyland. No, they don't go see Gogo. No, no,
no, they don't they I know they don't all right.
Anyway, we're gonna get the heck out of here
For now, I am TFG one Mike with Andrew sketch
Hinkson. Thank you for listening until next time
Oh, yeah, and unleash the tune in you
No chapter markers for this episode.
