Do You Letterboxd?

In the world of today’s technology we are inundated with a new type of social network on a daily basis. So it’s valid to ask why I would be talking about another social network. Well the reason is Letterboxd.com is far more than a social network. In fact what I enjoy most about the site it how you can utilize Letterboxd without participating in the social aspect of it.  Though if you do your experience is that much richer.

So the first question is what is Letterboxd? Well who better to explain that question then the website itselt:

Letterboxd is a social network for sharing your taste in film. Use it as a diary to record your opinion about films as you watch them, or just to keep track of films you’ve seen in the past. Rate, review and tag films as you add them. Find and follow your friends to see what they’re enjoying. Keep a watchlist of films you’d like to see, and create lists/collections on any given topic, for example: favorite heist films. Import historic data from several popular apps, and add films to your US Netflix instant queue directly from the site.

The Layout:

When you login your homepage looks something like the picture above. You can view the recently watched films of people you follow and see what they thought of each movie. What is also great about this layout is how each poster acts as a tool. You can rate the film, like the film, or add it to your watch list. So say if your best friend rates a movie 5 stars and you want to check it out later you can easily add it to your watch list, which will also add the film to your instant Netflix que if it is available for streaming.

Your Profile:

Your profile is pretty straight forward. You can list your contact info, a short bio, and your favorite films. It also lists what you recently watched, your most popular reviews, and the lists you created.  It is pretty much the one stop shop for everything you can do with Letterboxd. There are many sites that operate similar to Letterboxd, but what sets it apart is how user friendly it is. You can quickly access everything from pretty much anywhere.

The Movie Diary:

This is easily my favorite function of this website. The movie diary is an awesome way to keep track of what you watch throughout the year. By simply clicking on the ‘Add A Film’ button you can add a movie to your diary.

When you add a film you can indicate the day you saw it, whether it was a rewatch or first time watch, what you would rate it, and even write a review of the movie. You can then look back on your diary and see what you watched and what your thoughts were at the time. If you are like me you often wonder, “Did I watch that?”, well with this site that question now has an answer.

Lists:

Another great feature of Letterboxd is the ability to make lists. I’m a list junky and love creating and reading other peoples lists on a number of topics, so this function is right up my alley. You can make a list private so no one else can see or share a list with the rest of the world. There is also a specific list section of the site that shows the most creative and talked about lists.

Overview:

If you are a movie fan that enjoys conversing and sharing opinions with others you will find great enjoyment with this site. I personally use it a lot to get recommendations from others, which allows me to catch movies I otherwise would have missed. Plus you can find a number of great discussions that further evolve the movie going experience. If you are a movie fan at all I would advise checking out this site and I’m sure you’ll get hooked.
