CINEMA GEEKS
Most Anticipated Films of 2015

About this Episode
I got my ticket for the long way round To buy
the whiskey far the way And I sure would like
some sweet company And I'm leaving tomorrow,
what do you say? When I'm gone When I'm gone
listening to the GeekCast radio network. our
most anticipated films for 2015. That's right,
we're starting to close the book officially on
2014. Turn the page and do one of the couple
episodes that I probably look forward to the
most. When Dan and I did this last year, we did
our anticipated films of 2014. That and our box
office predictions, those are very fun records
to do. So we have one of those coming today as
our special episode. And because it's our special
episode, I decided to try to bring the two people
that I believe know movies best out there. And
one of those would, of course, be our very own
movie revolt. Dan, hello. Hello. You need to
get to know better people. There's about four
or five different ways I was going to introduce
you guys and I decided to be the nicest I possibly
could. I'm trying to shed my contrarian title
early on in 2015 here. And the other person I
have with us here is JD from In Session Films.
Hello. Thanks for having me and I'm glad to hear
that you can see that I am the best and that
2014 was an awesome year for film I just wish
I would have agreed with people more often And
we're calling this in in true true bromance fashion
We're gonna call this the definitive list for
the most anticipated films of 2015 Because I
believe when they put their top 10 list out,
they did call it the definitive. They did. Yes,
that is such a true romance thing. So this is
the definitive, most anticipated films look.
But before we get into our picks for what we're
looking forward to the most in 2015, not that
anybody doesn't know who you are or where they
can listen to you more, JD, but give us a little
bit of where people can find you on the internet
and what they should be looking forward to hear
more about you. Yeah, we are In Session Film.
You can find the In Session Film podcast on our
site at InSessionFilm .com. You can also find
our podcast on iTunes, Stitcher Radio, TuneIn
Radio, pretty much anywhere you can find podcasts.
But the quickest way to find anything about us
and to find the links to all those places is
just on our site at InSessionFilm .com, as well
as all of our social media stuff. And pretty
much if you just search In Session Film anywhere
on the internet, you're probably going to find
us. So yeah, you're lucky enough to have a unique
name that no one's tried to rip off or anything
like yeah, so there's there's easy ways to find
you guys and If you guys have not listened to
the in session film podcast yet and your movie
fans You need to correct that immediately and
listen to it. Thank you. They have great content
JD does a great job of Not only having great
co -hosts, but he has great guests and they do
a lot of fun stuff not only reviewing current
movies, but also doing awesome top three list.
And I like that you guys do top three lists.
We've done a lot of top 10 lists. And what by
doing a top three list, it really It makes you
have to put some thought into it. You do. Yeah.
And it makes it nice. And it's, it's short enough
that it makes the show, I think fluid and it's
nice and a good little segment in terms of time,
but you're right. I mean, you really have to
think about it hard. Cause some of these, some
of the, some of the categories that we pick You
can have like a million choices. So to pick just
three is is sometimes a real challenge, but it's
a lot of fun. We have a lot of fun with it. I
agree. And it's a lot of fun to listen to it.
It's one of the I was telling this in our 2014
look back at GeekCast Radio Network that this
was kind of the first year that I kind of went
from being someone that was just behind the mic
to actually listening to podcasts It's just something
that I hadn't done before but I was thinking
to myself and I basically have you know a 20
to 30 minute drive to work every day and then
about for the first hour or two that I'm there
I'm usually there by myself or possibly with
one other person and Was thinking myself after
a while like why don't I use this time to do
something that when I was thinking I'm like well
I could listen to music I usually listen to sports
talk radio on the way, but it was getting older
I can only listen to talk about the Chicago Bears
so much So I started listening to podcasts Because
I had that time and I could usually listen to
it to one at least before Before I had to do
other things with my with my ears and everything
like that and and both Talking in Circles, which
is obviously Dan's podcast and your podcast,
the In Session Film Podcast, were the two that
kind of made me realize that that was a good
decision and I haven't stopped. You had to you
had to deal with the fact that I was going back
and listening to episodes from like six months
prior. You're wondering why I'm commenting on
those episodes. Well, we appreciate the listen
and we appreciate the feedback. I've loved the
comments that you left on our website, no matter
how old the episode is and no matter how much
you disagreed with us, which was pretty often.
A few recently and directing my my ire towards
Brendan instead, so No, it's been fun and you
guys have really got me into listening podcast
obviously now I've added some other ones to the
rotation like true bromance and and some others
that you hear about so but in session film is
definitely one that you guys should check out
and and don't just take my word for it because
in I guess timely fashion here because we also
have something going on at GeekCast Radio currently
which is our second annual GeekCast Radio awards.
And what we've done this year is we let the voters
decide who our nominations would be first off.
So we took feedback from people and people could
submit their forms and talk about which things
they thought should be nominated. And we took
all that feedback and then actually created our
nominees for this year. And we also expanded
it so it's not just about people picking their
favorite TV shows, favorite comic books, favorite
movies. But we also have the ability for people
to pick their favorite key cast radio shows.
Their favorite syndicated shows that we have
our partner shows and then their favorite shows
from outside the network favorite YouTube series
so we expanded it to a lot of different categories
and and JD the Listeners and the fans as you
know and decided that you should be one of the
nominees for the best review podcast outside
of the get cast radio network, so Yeah That was
that was fun. I was glad to see you there Thank
you. Yeah, we were absolutely blown away by that.
Like I had no idea. It's not like it's anything
that we can't pay for anything. I got the tweet
from Dan, like last Tuesday or whatever it was.
And I was just, I was really blown away and I
immediately texted Brendan and I was like, you're
not even going to believe this. And then when
I found out that it was fan voting, it even further
blew me away. And I mean, I don't know exactly
what it was. Maybe I just wasn't expecting it,
but, uh, I don't know. It was, it was really
special. And we really do appreciate everyone
that listens and supports us and that voted for
us. It really means a lot. It's really cool.
Being it's really cool to be nominated with the
other four podcasts that's out there because
those are other podcasts that love and I listen
to all the time, especially simplistic reviews
are really, really good friends of mine. So it's
just really neat. We were really humbled by the
whole thing. The difference between the Academy
and the voters that helped us form our nominees
is we got we got the nominees right. Exactly.
So we have that goal for us. And one other kind
of side announcement for for the listeners of
Weekend at the movies, which is our name now,
I guess it's been changed so many times, but
We've been on a little hiatus We're coming back
with these special episodes like Dan and I did
a couple weeks ago with our top tens of 2014
and then Dan and Fridley sent and I will be back
in another week or so doing our box office predictions,
but We will be back with some regular episodes
now on a weekly basis and there's also been some
changes at the Geekcast Radio Network as far
as our schedule goes. So I want to get that business
real quick out of the way. Up to this point,
we've really had just about one podcast for each
different type of topic is what we've kind of
tried to stick to over there. So one podcast
dealing with comic books or one podcast dealing
with certain cartoons or movies, etc. And we've
just actually expanded our schedule a little
bit. And what we want to do is we want to try
to cater to people that have a distinct taste.
Maybe they only listen to podcasts about movies
or they only listen to podcasts about comic books
or whatever. What we're trying to do over at
GeekCast Radio Network is try to give you five
days a week worth of content tailored to whatever
taste you have in what you want to listen. Meaning,
if you're a cartoon fan, we're going to try to
allow for you to have a different show that you
can listen to Monday through Friday. So every
day if you're going to work like me and trying
to listen to something in the morning, we'll
have content for you Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, and Friday. All different shows, all
different takes on whatever type of content you
like to listen to. I bring that up because JD,
you said that the awards kind of hit you out
of left field and you weren't expecting it. Well,
you're probably not expecting this either and
hopefully you'll be. down for this or else it's
going to cause for some awkward live air here.
But we'd like to invite In Session Films to be
our Monday content at the Geekcast Radio Network.
Sure. And something that would be syndicated
and put out on our website as well. And so everybody
could start the week listening to In Session
Films on Mondays. Yeah, absolutely. We would
love to be a part. That sounds amazing. All right.
Thanks for the invite for that. Thanks for saying
yes if not causing me to... You went all in so
so basically in session films will be the Monday
content We'll have a weekend at the movies will
fill another day and Mike and Steve and what
they do with M wire will be on another day we
also have a Affiliation with the Geek Scholar
movie news, which will take up one slot. There
will be one other open slot so if you want to
see if that's something that you could potentially
fill any of the other podcasts that are listening
out there go to get cast radio network comm and
Check out the main page. There's a grid there
that has Monday through Friday and it has different
channels. There's a TV channel, a comic book
channel, a movie channel. So check out which
the movie channels are and you'll see that there's
an open slot on a certain day. And if you release
your content on that day of the week or if you're
wanting to adjust your schedule so that you would
release on that day of the week, fill out the
application that's available there or just get
a hold of Dan or I and we can try to help you
out because we do have one more slot in our week
that we want to fill to provide five days a week
movie content for those movie fans out there.
So that is something cool. That's new for 2015
at the GeekCast Radio Network. All right. I've
ran. Go ahead. I was going to say it sounds awesome.
Yeah. And that's kind of something that kind
of was something that I needed because I basically
only listen to movie podcasts with the exception
of Talking in Circles, which they do talk about
movies, but it's more of a general podcast. And
what I was finding is, you know, I work five
days a week and I would only have content to
listen to, you know. three or two or three days
or maybe four days. And so I was having to try
to branch out and find stuff on my own. So with
Geocast reader network, we're trying to do some
of the work for you and give you some options
for what to listen to. So all right. All the
business is out of the way. Then we can get to
the fun stuff, which is talking about what we're
anticipating for movies in 2015. Remember, Dan,
this is the year that the world was going to
explode. Based on everybody freaking out about
what was it 12 to 18 months ago. Yeah this is
like the you know this is it after 2015. Yeah
everybody was was completely wanting to bypass
2014 about you know a year and a half ago and
nobody wanted to talk about any films are coming
out in 2014 it was all about the gazillion movies
are coming out in 2015 and. Trying to warn people
that hey stuff's gonna get pushed around stuff's
gonna get delayed or pushed you know out of 2015
into 2016 and it immediately happened when Batman
versus Superman the Dark Knights of Justice something
when we were rumoring all the different titles
that they were going to talk about got pushed
to 2016 now we've seen another move here recently
where Mission Impossible has has conveniently
moved to the summer of 2015 not because of Star
Wars though right. Yeah, nothing to do with that.
I love that the press release did not say the
word Star Wars ever. Yeah We all know the truth
But yeah, we're finally to 2015 the year that
everybody was freaking out about and how we're
gonna do this Very similar to what we did last
year to those that listened to Dan and I go down
our 2014 most anticipated list We're gonna have
two different sections. We're gonna have a first
section, which is just our unique picks Basically,
what happened was is JD was kind enough to rank
a good deal of movies. And I think you ranked
what, 50? Yeah, 50, yeah. Dan ranked 100. And
I stopped it where JD did I stopped at 50 but
we took we took each other's top 30 the top 30
that each of us ranked and We broke it down from
there So what we have is if there was a film
that was on all three of our list We're gonna
save those films till the second half There was
nine films that all three of us are very much
anticipating for 2015 So you'll hear that in
the second half in the first half We're gonna
count down the films that were more unique to
just either one person's list or that only appeared
on two of the three And we'll just kind of rotate
around there was a couple films Like I said that
wrote that appeared on two of the three lists
in that case whoever ranked that movie higher
We're gonna wait until that person comes up to
talk about that film, but they love it more.
What's that? Because they love it more. They
love it more apparently they're Anticipating
it more before we get into our picks though,
Dan Maybe be fun to take a quick look back at
what you and I had for the previous year and
see if we were either out of our minds or What
we learned about doing this last year. I'm just
gonna read real quickly recap Dan and I's individual
top tens from 2014 I'm assuming Dan you remember
most of them, but I have it here in front of
me just in case you don't One thing that I learned
last year that I'm gonna try not to do this year
is pick a bunch of movies that aren't gonna come
out It's always a good idea because I'm pretty
sure there was like six films I had in my top
30 last year that didn't even come out in 2015
Yeah, I had a few I had the gunman James got
a gun Serena a few other movies that did not
end up coming out until this year. Yeah, I had
I had Everest Which is coming out this year and
a couple other ones. I'm not gonna get into But
uh breaking down our top 10 from 2014. I had
uh, maleficent was my number 10 most anticipated
film Then I had muppets most wanted Good lord.
I had transcendence At eight transcendence was
my number four last year. Hey, I i'm a sci -fi
fan I usually anticipate in those types of films
johnny depp without makeup. I mean, come on I
thought maybe um, and I had captain america the
winter soldier at seven uh guardians of the galaxy
at six i'm actually proud I had that at my top
10 because Yeah, it was not on a lot of people's
radar there and I definitely did not predict
it as a box office hit Oh my goodness Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles at number five That's nostalgia
I'm pretty sure I said on that record that this
has a good chance of being crap you did I went
back into the woods at four Interstellar at three.
I think everybody had interstellar really high
list. Uh -huh. X -Men Days of Future Past was
my number two most anticipated film and Dawn
of the Planet of the Apes was my number one.
All I can say is that I'm happy that at least
the one I had at the top did not disappoint me.
I really enjoyed Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
So, Dan, you had Box Trolls at 10, Gone Girl
at 9, Boyhood at 8, How to Train Your Dragon
2 at 7, Godzilla at six. I apologize Captain
America at five Foxcatcher at four inherent vice
at three interstellar at two and x -men Days
of future past at number one. How did you feel
that your most anticipated films did last year?
I Think nine out of ten. I at least had positive
responses to you. So that's not bad I was gonna
say Dan your list was mostly pretty good for
for how I thought about him Anyway, I mean there
was a few that I was kind of if you know, that's
pretty good list I think yeah, I mean there's
so much like I don't like I Bucksholz was a little
disappointing, but I still sure. Yeah. But, uh,
you know, Godzilla is the one that I gave it
a positive review, but it's, it did not at all
come close to what I was hoping for. So go ahead.
I was going to say it's one of those movies that
it's flawed. You know, it's flawed, but you can
still have fun with it. At least I, yeah. Definitely.
I mean like, you know as long as the humans aren't
on screen I'm having that was supposed to be
what my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pick was
like there was I was hoping it was gonna be flawed
but still fun Yeah, it didn't end up any of those
they ended up flawed and not it was very flawed
Elevator scene was pretty fun. Yes, we had one
good So all that should tell you guys is is when
you're listening to our list in 2015 completely
disregard everything I say and and pay attention
to what Dan says and and hopefully JD has just
as good a luck because Danny yours is almost
reminiscent to what a lot of people had is their
top 10 films I mean gone girl Boyhood how to
train your dragon Fox catcher Inherent vice and
a lot of people put either Captain America or
x -men or guardians one of the three in there
So yeah, I mean I didn't take much chances. I
kind of gave one with this dab of talent Taking
Michael Jordan as your number one All right,
so with 2014 out of the way as far as what we
did last year Let's look at what we did this
year. We will let the guest host go first. So
JD As far as our unique list go, what is your
number 10 most anticipated film for 2015? Yeah,
my number 10 is I'm going to a director that
I actually wasn't that familiar with until a
couple years ago. For my number 10, I'm going
with Joe Swamberg and Digging for Fire. And mostly
I don't know anything about this project. I don't
know much about the story other than it was written
by Joe Swamberg and also Jake Johnson, who is
an actor. that I really like quite a bit. And
to see him now into the writing process with
Joe Swanberg is really interesting to me. The
cast for this film looks really intriguing as
well. I'm hoping that... And I'm kind of expecting
that this is going to stay within kind of that
mama core style where they kind of freestyle.
They have a semi script and then they're just
kind of kind of go with it. Uh, but like I said,
I don't know much about this project. I'm mostly
going on this pick based off of, I really loved
drinking buddies in 2013. I really liked happy
Christmas last year. Not quite as much as drinking
buddies, but I still liked it quite a bit. Uh,
and so those two films, two for two for me. So
this was a pretty easy choice for me. looking
forward to this. I know it just kind of premiered
at Sundance. I haven't read any reviews yet.
I'm trying to stay away from that, but one I'm
really, really excited for. Yeah, Drinking Buddies
was actually my number 10 film of 2013 when we
did the list. I don't know how much would have
changed since then. I've seen a few more films,
but yeah, it was one of my top 10. So I'm definitely
intrigued by that one as well. My yeah, it's
on my it's in my top 100 sigma number 37 or so.
I do love drinking buddies I'm a huge fan of
Jake Johnson as well. I love new girl. He's on
he was in that and yeah, I went to go see let's
be cops and He couldn't make it any good, but
he tried That movie was just kind of a spinoff
of new girl It was yeah, exactly Anna Kendrickson
digging for fire too. So yeah, that has me excited.
So yeah, I'm excited for it All right. My number
10 is I actually didn't know much about this
Dan until I went over your top 100 because I
had done You know tried to do my best research
and I had gone, you know through a lot of different
sites and what movies were coming out in 2015
and scoured things but I somehow would miss this
one until I Spanned a scan over your your top
100. My number 10 is gonna be truth I am a sucker
for New stories about the news kind of of the
ilk of good night and good luck That's why I'm
somewhat intrigued about this. I don't know if
it'll be to that level But just getting in behind
the news and I guess the history buffing me has
a sweet tooth for that I guess but To go into
a time period that I necessarily wasn't paying
it as a as much attention to the news Being younger
to kind of look back and see what kind of things
were going on during that time And then just
kind of go behind that story Dan. I know you
have that on your top 100 list So maybe you can
give a little bit more as to why that made your
list Well like you I'm a big fan movies that
surround about about news and for those that
don't know this kind of is Robert reference can
be playing Dan rather during like his last right
before his retirement when he has a expose on
George Bush during George Bush Jr., I should
say. It kind of goes into that. Storyline and
like in this gigantic report that he went through
and I like I'm excited for it too because of
the news aspect and I like Robert Redford and
Seeing him playing that character of Dan Rather
should be kind of interesting I'm a little worried
it might be a little too politically like heavy
and Kind of just one of those movies that's more
interested about making a point than actually
making a movie But uh, you know the concept seems
interesting and I like the I like the cast so
yeah, I don't remember who it's being directed
by it's being directed by James James Vanderbilt.
And this is my one concern with that movie is
he's written some screenplays, some of them I
don't care for at all. And this is his directorial
debut, I'm pretty sure. So that's where I'm a
little iffy too, especially with some of the
political stuff you're talking about. Dan, I'm
not sure if he'll be able to handle that appropriately.
And Robert Redford has had similar films in the
past, like Lions for Lambs, where It was it was
just like blatantly just a political message,
which can get kind of annoying even if you agree
with it It's just that it's like all right. I
get it. I get what you're trying to do here So
that's my one worry, but yeah, the idea does
it's an intriguing story Sure And that's something
too that that kind of will get into as we go
through our list is there's a number of different
reasons Why why a film can make your most anticipated
list or why you're looking forward to something
obviously? It could be related to a certain franchise.
It could be the actual story or plot that you
find intriguing It can be the set of actors,
you know, whoever's cast for it, or in some cases
the director. You know, I mean, we all have different
things that we look for that make us interested
in it. That one, you know, not so much the director
like JD is talking about, but it's it's the subject
matter. And hopefully, you know, hopefully it's
not as much Alliance for Lambs and a little bit
more like a good night and good luck for me.
Otherwise, I probably will be disappointed with
it, but it's still something that intrigues me
enough that that I'll be there to see it. So,
Dan, what's your number 10? Well, this is speaking
of why you're interested in a film This is one
I'm interested mainly because of the director
who like JD you mentioned with your number 10
that you weren't Aware of the director until
a few years ago. This is a director I wasn't
aware of until last year when he made like father
like son My top ten last year and that's the
director is I'm gonna butcher this name up front.
So just go for it man. Over it hero hero kazoo
Karita and the movie he's making is called That's
also gonna be something I butchered Unimachi
Diary. I think it got Diary right. There's not
much about it, but basically the story revolves
around three sisters who live in their grandmother's
home and one of the new sister ends up arriving
and it's just this family dynamic. And one thing
I loved about Like Father Like Son is it took
a concept that was rather basic one you see all
the time and really did it interesting. Story
with it. So I really like that and I was really
surprised by that film. So That has me intrigued
about what he's gonna do next. So it is gonna
be a Japanese film So those who don't like subtitles
may not want to partake in it. Yeah, I'm rather
Mike already stopped listening to this episode
I don't know anything about his diary movie,
but I really liked like father like son, too.
And I loved the way that he handled the characters
in that movie, especially I thought they were
really intriguing, all of them. And there was
some nice exploration with several of them, especially
the two fathers, which I thought was really,
really compelling. So based off of that alone,
I would agree, Dan, it's it's at least worth
giving it a shot for sure. And if his name is
not Hirokazu, I think it should be. I don't think
it is but I like it. That's just fun to say.
There you go That might be We're gonna get some
type of response from that from Pokemon fan somewhere
out there with a picture of that character JD,
what's your number nine? My number nine comes
from a director who does not make bad movies
I'm going with Matthew Vaughn and Kingsman the
Secret Service at my number nine. I really don't
care Who's in this movie? I don't care what the
story is. The fact that this was made by Matthew
Vaughn is all that I need to know to go see this
movie. Cause I've loved everything he does. I
love the first kick ass X -Men first class. Everything
he's done for me has been amazing. So that alone
is intriguing. I've loved the trailers. I do
like the cast though here. Um, you know, with,
uh, Sammy Jackson and Colin Firth and Mark Hamill
and a few other people list goes on and on. And
it's this R rated action movie, which he does
really well. So I'm really, really excited for
this. Um, and I've heard from some early reports.
I don't know how true it is, but the very, the
very few things that I've read is that this is
possibly arguably maybe his best movie yet. So,
uh, I couldn't be more excited for this movie.
I'm glad you've heard those reports because I
was, I'm. Looking forward to this for a couple
of reasons number one for my own liking but it's
also a film that my girlfriend's looking forward
to and she actually Came to me today and she's
like I've heard bad things about Kingsman and
I really want to see it Yeah, I mean the one
thing that is concerning to me Is that it was
supposed to come out at the end of October last
year and then they moved it to February Which
is usually a dumping ground, right? this time
of year. So normally when movies move from the
fall to like Monuments Men did last year, that
was not a very good movie. And so I'm a little
concerned because of that, but it's not enough
that when I consider Matthew Vaughn and what
he's done and what I've seen from the trailers,
it's hard for me to take that as Too concerning
I guess like I'm still more excited than I am
concerned right and I just told her this and
the same thing that Obviously based on my track
record. I'm clearly not concerned about anybody
else. I like you to move here. Yeah So I said
no worries we're still gonna go see it um But
yeah, I think that one's an intriguing one to
hopefully hopefully not a letdown with the with
the bump into February my number nine is I really
don't. This is going to be a prime example of
it's simply an actor that is placed in this movie
in my top 10 here. And that is going to be Beasts
of No Nation starring Idris Elba. Yeah. I mean,
the setting and the actor and I'm sold. So. There's
not a lot I gotta say yeah, there's not a lot
out I mean as far as like a cast or or a lot
of things about it I mean, there's there's a
decent plot summary obviously and we all know
that the setting that it's going to be in kind
of the tone of the film and To me, I don't necessarily,
this is the type of film, I don't necessarily
need to know too much about it. I don't even
want to know too much about it. I want to go
in with a clean slate and just see Idris Elba
act and hopefully everything else comes together
so I'm not disappointed. Another thing to go
along with that when you were talking about all
you need to hear is Idris Elba in this setting
and I would agree with that for sure. But the
one thing that I would add to that After last
year is that the director here is the same director
that did true detective Which was my favorite
TV series of last year, right? So you add that
to the mix and yeah, just say that and I'm on
board. So All right, Dan, what's your number
nine? My number nine is Speaking of directors
that have kind of proven themselves and this
is probably one of the directors I think is you
know been really hitting it out of the park with
every film. I don't think You know, again another
director I think has done a bad movie and that
is Jeff Nichols with yeah Midnight Smith You
know, it's he you know, Jeff Nichols was done
take shelter mud He's his films have been this
like tremendously great and he's been really
great at getting really strong performances from
actors Beth McConaughey Michael Shannon Michael
Shannon once again stars in Midnight Special
along with Adam Driver and Jill Edgerton So that's
kind of like the strong cast with a really strong
director Um, not a lot out about it yet. It was
actually kind of, some people thought it might've
came out last year, but it's actually coming
out this year. And it's about a father and son
who, uh, go on the run after they find out their
son has like special powers and don't really
know what they mean by special powers, which
has me interested. Cause I think back to something
like take shelter, which kind of had a supernatural
element where you weren't really sure if what
you were witnessing was just someone going crazy
or whatnot. So Curious to see what this, what
this entails. So, and it has me excited, mostly
because of Jeff Nichols and I'll see anything
he does. That's a good reason. Um, yeah, yeah.
Jeff Nichols and Michael Shannon together are
incredible. So this one, for whatever reason,
slipped under the cracks for me a little bit.
I think if I would have remembered this, this
probably would be in my, my top 20 most anticipated,
quite honestly. Uh, I love everything you said,
Dan. I'm a hundred thousand percent on board
with what you're saying. That's one of the reasons
why I love both making the anticipated list and
then listening to other people's is that's a
time when you hear about stuff that you either
don't know about or you've forgotten or you've
never heard anything about compared to like when
you're listening to everybody's top 10 movies
this year and you're you kind of have an idea
of what's gonna be on there give or take, you
know, I mean, you know what the possibilities
are. But I learned a lot listening to all these
anticipated films lists. So hopefully everybody
else out there can hear about at least a couple
of films here that they didn't have on their
radar before that we list here. So that brings
it back to you, JD. What's next on your list?
For my number eight, I'm going with, again, a
director I wasn't familiar with until a few years
ago, but his last two films have really, really
sold me. For my number eight, I'm going with
Dennis Villanueva and Cesario which is a film
that one I think has an amazing cast as well
with Emily Blunt and John Bernthal and Josh Brolin
and I don't know about you guys. I absolutely
loved enemy last year. It was in my top 20 or
close to it. I also really liked Prisoners in
2013 as well. So I really loved what this guy
does. I love his great direction and his aesthetics
that he's able to create. I think he gets some
amazing performances from his actors. I thought
Jake Gyllenhaal was just as good an enemy as
he was a nightcrawler in my opinion. And I thought
the performances he got out of Hugh Jackman and
Jake Gyllenhaal and Prisoners was amazing as
well. So I'm really, really looking forward to
this. Again, I don't know anything about it other
than just the short synopsis about it that you
can read on IMDB. But, um, again, just because
of the cast and the project, I mean, that is
enough for it to sell for me. So I'll be really
intrigued to see a poster or trailer, um, you
know, whenever, whenever that comes out. But,
uh, yeah, I'm really looking forward to what
Dennis Villanueva has next. He's just one of
those directors. That's really high on my radar
right now. Yeah, I even really liked on unsung
D as well, which came I think might have been
his first film and I think what's really interesting
about him as a director is that each of his movies
have been really distinct and unlike each other
like there's they've All like enemies not really
all that much like prisoners and unsung D's completely
different than all They all have like aspects
that you can kind of come to see and there's
certain thrilling aspects that are Concurrent
through all of them But overall like each is
kind of unique in its own its own film does seem
like he he's very well and yeah only is rather
short And I think the stories that it tells are
really interesting and there's a lot of depth
to them. I know prisoners was a little bit more
straightforward than enemy, but it still had
little pieces of it that you could really chew
on and really dissect a lot. And of course, enemy
was that the whole movie was like that. So he's
just really good at bringing some really compelling
films, I think. Yeah, I think that's a great
picture GD and that's actually a film that was
on my top list in the early iteration of it and
then as as more films more films became Evident
to me. I just missed and just kind of slipped
through the cracks there But it would definitely
was something that I have on my radar. I like
prisoners Still need to see enemy. I apologize
It's very high on my list of to do I'll be curious
to hear your thoughts too because it's it's it's
not It's not it's when you have to sit on it's
certainly not for everybody So and based off
of other films that are kind of like it that
I know your opinion of I'd be very very curious.
I like prisoners. I do I am growing to like Jake
Gyllenhaal more and more every time I see him
I really liked him in end of watch and Yeah,
yeah ever since then he's kind of been on my
radar So definitely willing to give enemy a shot
It's it's been you know as I as we go through
the process of trying to select which movies
we're gonna watch It's it's always in the discussion,
so I think it's about time for it to come up
here All right my number eight I think I might
be Somewhat alone on this one because I haven't
seen it make too many other people's lists so
that scares me but my number eight is gonna be
the gunman and Only because I wanted to put two
Idris Elba films in a row So this one has big
sites I just Elva Javier Bardem and Sean Penn
That's usually you know anytime you can get three
actors that I really like that's usually a good
thing I know some Sean Penn somewhat polarizing,
but I'm actually a big fan of his And it's being
directed by Pierre Morel who directed District
13 from Paris with Love and Taken. I'm not necessarily
saying that's like a Hall of Fame resume, but
I do like some of his work there. And the main
selling though here is obviously Sean Penn, Idris
Elba and Javier Bardem all being in the same
film. Actually had that my list last year because
for my top 30 last year, but I'm not coming out
So I that's only reason I didn't include it for
this year, but I do look forward to it It could
be Sean Penn's taken which is kind of mine mind
-boggling to think about but we're running out
of people to do that with so we Can do it I can
do it I can't either Yeah, now I'm coming up
blank too. So we'll get comments on this people
inform us Like 15 that we're missing out on So
that is my number eight Dan, what about you?
Well, this is one we actually kind of talked
about a little bit already and I had like two
serious traumas So I kind of need a fun blockbuster
in here this put things up a little bit and it's
one that's actually I'm anticipating it so much
that they moved it up five months from Mission
possible five. I actually I like the mission
possible franchise. I think is really interesting
It's kind of like a good comparison to like the
fast and furious franchise and it's actually
kind of gotten better the longer Yeah, so like
I you know mission possible ones All right, two
is kind of a it's kind of a mass three gets better
and then four I think is I love mission possible
for a lot because it's preferred but So yeah,
and that's I mean that's one issue like you with
Brad Bird not being in missional possible five
Little worried that you know, that's his absence
is gonna be notice. It's going to be directed
by the guy who did Jack yeah, yeah Christopher
McQuarrie who you know, Jack Reacher was kind
of bland, but I'm an on a bash Tom Cruise fan
I know he gets a lot of hate. I like it too.
I really like him too. Yeah For a lot of good
reasons, you know his some of his personal life
sure as a movie fan. I'm a fan Yeah, no one can
run on screen But so yeah, and I had edge of
tomorrow or whatever they're calling in on my
list last year So I guess I have to have a Tom
Cruise movie every year But it has me excited
and a lot of people are coming back and including
Jeremy Renner So that that has me excited fair
enough. I'm willing to give Tom Cruise a chance
after after live die repeat On the edge of tomorrow,
whatever they're calling it, whatever DVD cover
you get. So yeah, I'm willing to give them a
shot. I yeah, I'm excited for it too. I know
I wasn't a huge fan of Jack Reacher, but I really
love Tom Cruise as well. And I don't know if
you guys have heard about some of the stunts
in this film, but I saw some of the photos. It's
kind of crazy. It looks nuts. So yeah, I'm pretty
intrigued for sure. All right, JD Europe for
my what are we on number 76? Whatever, whatever,
whatever number seven. My next one is my first
blockbuster as well. I'm going with my girl.
I'm going with Jennifer Lawrence and the Hunger
Games Mockingjay part two. I think I'm the only
one on the planet that really loved Mockingjay
part one. It seems like so. Uh, I loved it. I,
you know, I had the same experience actually
with the Harry Potter series when they split
up the last, uh, the last film, if you will,
I really liked part one better than part two.
And, and I think I'm going to have the same experience
here. I've read the book. So, uh, part two will
be more action and it's going to have this huge
climax and it'll probably have a lot more fun
aspects to it. But what I loved about part one.
Was it was more gritty and it was emotional and
it was more human to me. There was a huge struggle
there with the Katniss character that I loved.
I absolutely dug it. So I'm really looking forward
to part two because I'm hoping that they extend
that even though I know there's going to be a
lot more action. It's probably going to be more
fast paced, but it's the same director, Francis
Lawrence. Um, and of course all the cast as well.
So, um, so yeah, I'm pretty excited to see where
it goes. I know a lot of people weren't a huge
fan of how the book ended. A lot of people consider
the third book actually the worst of the three.
I'm kind of in that camp, but I've heard that
they've rewritten the ending to this film. So
it's going to be different than the book. So
I'm really curious to see all of that. So based
off of what I've loved about The Hunger Games,
it's only gotten better and better and better
for me. So I'm hoping that the trend continues
with Mockingjay part two. And regardless of how
well it's received or not received from critics,
it is probably going to be the first, I believe,
the first Hunger Games film that's not going
to take number one at the box office. Is that
correct? Yeah, at the most, it'll be number three.
I think that's pretty much guaranteed at this
point. I think all the other ones have been number
one. Maybe I'm maybe I'm misspeaking with that.
The last one didn't, because Guardians. No, it
did. It surpassed Guardians. Oh, it did. Bullshit.
Hey, watch your language. Just kidding. I don't
know if this is considered a blockbuster. You
guys both went with blockbusters with your last
pick. But it's somewhat close, I guess. Dan I
think you had this one rated pretty high on your
top 100 as well and that will be the Martian
for my number seven Why because I don't learn
from And and Ridley Scott can just continue to
abuse me But man, I have a soft spot for Matt
Damon. I also have a soft spot for science fiction
and Yes, Ridley Scott's directing it but Whatever,
I'll still go see it and I'll still be excited
for it. Jessica Chastain, Michael Pena, Jeff
Daniels, Sean Bean, Egya For, or however I mispronounce
his name. So I mean, it's got a ridiculous cast,
it's science fiction, I'm... Probably going to
be burned on this but the Martian is my number
seven I have learned with Ridley Scott as of
late to not get excited just because it has a
good cast because that doesn't mean anything
with him apparently But I will say him and sci
-fi in the past On in his resume have usually
yeah, it that's usually been his best work So
i'm hoping him going back to that will be a step
up. But yeah his his last few Um, and i'm hoping
it's better than prometheus. I wasn't a huge
fan of that film Although i've liked that a lot
better than his last few films, but I agree.
You're you're kind of playing with fire there.
Yeah, I keep having visions of like prometheus
and alice i'm like Somehow because of Matt Damon
or this guy like forming a movie together and
hopefully that product is good. I don't know
if that's One of the few that really like I like
Prometheus I think it was I I know I see it to
choose but I thought I thought it was overall
enjoyable So that's kind of why I like I I'm
excited that he's getting back to sci -fi Yeah,
and yeah, but the cast doesn't mean anything
see the counselor and exactly That's what I was
referring to. Yeah But it did have a scene in
my top scenes list of 2013 back in the... It
was certainly interesting, that's for sure. Dan,
what do you have at number seven before we go
down that path? Well, my number seven actually
doesn't even have a title yet. I'm assuming that's
going to change soon. But right now it's just
called the Untitled Christmas Eve Project by
Jonathan Levine. And if that name sounds familiar,
it's probably because you've heard it before
in relation to a movie that came out a few years
ago called 50 50, which I thought was fantastic
and made my top. That was my number one film
of that year. Yeah, I think it was it was in
my top five, if I'm not mistaken. And it was
great. You know, great. Combination of comedy
and drama and with this he's once again teaming
with Seth Rogen and George and Gordon Leffit
also anything Mackey is is joining the cast as
well as and Lizzie Kaplan so I Has me really
excited just cuz how much I love 50 -50 seeing
these guys all together again and Jonathan Levine
also made Warm bodies. Yeah was a lot better
than I thought exactly Awful, but it'll be kind
of you know not interesting little film So it
has me excited for what he what he can do with
this and it is covert in my m Goldberg Who also
co -wrote he co -wrote a lot of stuff with Seth
Rogen including interview So I do know that their
writing style can get kind of tedious at times
But I just like the castle like the director
and the the concept seems rather interesting
It's just really just you know sending around
Christmas Eve in New York City, so Found that
there's at least a dozen movies out there. They
don't have titles yet. I Like going through lists.
It's on title this project untitled that project
But makes it yeah, that's what they're going
with. It's like it's like going with yeah. Yeah,
that's really interesting going back to to something
that you guys are saying. I can't remember which
one of you said it, but, you know, going back
to this idea of doing this list and, and getting
something new out of it. I hadn't, I hadn't heard
of this project yet until you just brought that
up, Dan. And, uh, I completely agree. 50 50 was
great. And warm bodies was such a nice surprise.
I thought it was going to be trash. And I was
really pleasantly surprised by it. So I'm adding
this one to the list as we speak. Very cool.
Excellent. Um, well what's one that is on your
list JD then at number six. At my number six
is a film that was supposed to come out here
pretty soon and Then just got pushed back to
December and I'm actually really excited for
that move because I'm talking about Ron Howard's
in the heart of the sea I Really liked the trailer
when this came out. I loved the poster for this.
I'm pretty sure a lot of people have seen this
by now. If you haven't, or if you're not familiar
with it, it's pretty much the story that inspired
the book Moby Dick. Ron Howard with his films
when they're based off of true stories are kind
of biographical. tend to be his best. And his
last film Rush was number eight for me in 2013.
And it was another biographical film. So I'm
loving that he's kind of sticking with that genre.
I love Chris Helmsworth in this, at least in
the trailer. I think he looks great. It looks
like he's going to be a much better fit in this
than a recent project of his that just came out.
I've already, I've already awarded that the worst
cast. What the heck. But I think he looks much
better here and I'm pretty excited for this.
I love, like I said, I love the move to December.
I love that the studio is so confident in it
that they're going to move it into award season.
So I am huge, huge on this movie. I'm definitely
down for it. It's actually in my top 25. So I
also had it amongst the ones that were possible
for this countdown. Definitely looking forward
to it. Ron Howard does a lot of good things and
it just seems like it could have that. epic feel,
but also a good emotional tug to it. So I think
it has a lot of elements that could come together
and work pretty well with it. Absolutely. All
right. My number six, since you had one at number
six, I was on my list. I think I have one that
is on your list at my number six. And that would
be the Sea of Trees film, uh, tracked by Gus
Van Sant starring Matthew McConaughey, um, Ken
Watanabe, Naomi Watts. Um, I mean, I could have
stopped at Matthew McConaughey. Guess that's
one another person that really his name and I'm
good. I'll watch it. Can I hear him do some voiceover?
I don't know But uh, but Gus Van Sant, I mean
he has a pretty Yeah, pretty big filmography.
They're probably one of the biggest films that
you might know from him would be good while hunting
But he did milk recently and I mean he's done
a ton of stuff. So I mean you got an experienced
person here um with this uh kind of drama slash
mystery uh tone from what i'm getting um as far
as the the plot synopsis um i just think this
is this one's intriguing and and could have a
lot to chew on so sea of trees is my number six
jd i know you're looking forward to this one
too yeah yeah it's it's definitely in my in my
top 30 um for the ones i'm looking forward to
as well so Yeah, for I really don't have anything
to add other than what you just said. I love
the guy's track record and the cast here as you
were talking about looks amazing. So I'm going
to try and go into it as blind as possible. I
don't know much about the story other than, you
know, what's the little synopsis that's out there.
So, yeah, exactly. Exactly. All right, Dan, what's
yours? Number six. Well, I'm a big fan of like
dystopian future films, which is kind of why
this is really high on my list And it's a zebra
Zachariah. Yeah starring Margot Robbie from Wolf
of Wall Street fame Chris Pine, you know Captain
Kirk himself and Turretel Ejiofor so really and
that's the cast because it's it's in a future
where basically the world has somehow ended and
these three are left and it gets into their relationships
with one another. It's also directed by Craig
Sowell, who did compliance two years ago, which
if you haven't seen, it's the film about a fast
food worker who is accused over the phone of
stealing. And I don't want to get anything away
in that film, but what happens is kind of based
on his crazy. And yeah, it's a, and that wasn't,
I thought, I had some issues with that film,
but I thought it was overall effective. So it
has me really intrigued and mostly the cast,
mostly to tell you before and Margot Robbie ever
since she did. Well, Wall Street was looking
forward to like her next big project to tell.
I mean, after 12 years of slave, I've actually
been a fan of him since I saw him in the Serenity
a few years ago. I always thought he would be
a perfect casting for Black Panther. But, you
know, you can. That has me excited. Yeah. And
like I said, I know we get tons of dystopian
feature films. They're an abundance of them.
Maybe some could say too much, but... Considering
the the cast evolved it. I think there's potential
for this one to stand out a little bit I know
it did premiere at Sundance. I don't know what
the reception was overall Like I think JJ you
mentioned I try to avoid that until I can go
see it Looking forward to seeing it come out.
I agree. I really like compliance as well It
was very effective for me overall just such an
arduous film to watch and I know that this is
another dystopian film is you're kind of talking
about and my biggest concern going into this
is is it gonna Is the kind of love triangle stuff
going to work? Or is it going to feel like a
Pearl Harbor when you have all this action and
chaos surrounding it? And is that going to mix
well? And that's my only concern with the film.
But when you look at the cast involved, the director,
as you were talking about, I mean, it's certainly
interesting. It's definitely my top 50 as far
as my list as well. I'm definitely looking forward
to it. Haven't read any reviews either. I'm staying
away as much as I can. I think you just made
me throw up a little in my mouth when you said
Pearl Harbor. I have some pretty strong feelings
about that film. But yes, I won't go into it
here. All right, JD, that brings us to our top
five as far as our unique list go. So start it
off with your number five choice. Yeah. My number
five is a film that I haven't seen in a ton of
top 10 most anticipated lists, but maybe I just
haven't searched hard enough. My number five,
I'm going with Gamora Del Toro with Crimson Peak.
And as much as I love Del Toro's, you know, fun
adventure films, I love the Pacific Rim and the
Hellboy movies are fun. I love that he's getting
back to kind of his roots kind of filmmaking.
I love the devil's backbone. I love Pan's lab
brand. I think those two films are incredible.
I know he's working on some sort of third film
to make a trilogy out of those kinds of films.
And so I definitely want to see him get back
to that. This also has Tom Hiddleston and Mia
Wasikowska in it. And Jessica Chastain, I think,
is also in it and Charlie Hunnam. And I know
a lot of people aren't huge on Charlie Hunnam,
but I think the rest of that cast makes up for
it. And I love Del Toro. I love it when he gets
back to these really gritty stories that it's
going to have a lot of heart behind. it as well.
So, Curbsome Peak, I can't wait for it. I'm just
glad that you said his name before I had to try
to because for some reason I always butcher his
name. I get tongue tied in all kinds of this
actually. Sure. In the early, if we were going
with my first list of most anticipated film,
this would have been our 10th film that all three
of us had in common. But it just got bumped out
at the last minute when I changed a few films
So I was looking forward to this as well Which
is it the true bromance guys or the first -time
watchers that one of those groups do not like
Pacific Rim Every time it makes a bad comment
about it. I'm like, wait a second. Do these guys
not like Pacific Rim? Sorry, that's a side. Yeah,
but Dan I know you had this one high on your
list to what makes you looking forward to this
one Honestly, it's mostly del Toro and like JD
kind of explained it really well as not much
more I can add it so I did that he's getting
back into the realm of horror he's kind of like
Done a little bit here and there like last year.
He produced and did the first episode for this
the strain. Yeah Which was awful TV show It was
such a disappointment But I love that book in
the yet. It just I don't know. I just did not
translate Well, but I'm well the fact he's getting
back to it movie wise. Yeah And I know, like
you mentioned with Charlie Hunnam, I wasn't the
hugest fan of him in Pacific Rim, but I've been
catching up with Sons of Anarchy, and he's actually
really good in that, so it just could have been
the material. I think he's a better actor than
people are giving him credit for, so. Alright.
Hopefully he gets more of a chance in Prism Peaks.
Yeah, I think this is on, I know GD said you
haven't seen it on a lot of people's lists, but
it was almost on all three of our lists, so I
think there are a lot of people looking forward
to it. I think Del Toro has that. that type of
following that he does have a good following
for sure. Which is good because I wouldn't be
surprised if there's a cult that surrounds it.
It's possible. It's possible. Remember guys what
I preface this whole thing. Listen to their list.
Ignore most of my list. But my number five again
big setup for possible failure. But my number
five is Jupiter ascending only because it was.
Really on my list last year, I believe and then
it kept getting pushed but Yeah, I mean the Wachowski's
as far as direction I mean, obviously people
know them from the whole Matrix trilogy V for
vendetta cloud atlas from a few years ago Channing
Tatum Milo Kunis Eddie Redmayne and again Sean
Bean if anyone's involved in our fantasy film
league Maybe maybe write down Sean Bean's name
as a possible draft because he's shown up all
over the place regardless of if he dies or not
in each film Which we know he's going to let's
just be I know this has the chance that it could
be ridiculous, but I am a sucker like I said
not only for science fiction, but especially
like these space opera type films and I'll sign
up and put me in the seat. I'll watch Jupiter
sending and if it disappoints me so be it I will
say Yeah, go ahead. Go ahead. I was. Yeah, I
had it. I have it like way like like the 80s,
I think, or something like that for my overall
list. But I don't know. I just they have to be
able to make a good movie again. Right. It's
just like it has to happen to making the matrix.
There has to be like they have to be able to
get to another great science fiction film. But
I'm holding out. I didn't mind V for that cloud
atlas. Well, they didn't directly be for ended.
I think the only. Oh, yeah, that's true. They're
just the producers on that. Yeah. I did like
I thought cloudless was an improvement. Yeah,
I don't know something about that Jupiter just
feel like it can be a huge mass or I think this
is one that especially like if you if you were
saying the cast name like if you had read the
cast two years ago, I Think most of us would
have been laughable. Yeah, it's like Jimmy Tatum
in mine Milo Kunis like Nobody knew who Eddie
Redmayne was right two or three years ago. Yeah,
now all of a sudden you see those names and it's
like I will say, you know, cause you were talking
about how this was supposed to come out last
August or something like that. And it got pushed
back. And, you know, in the spring last year,
they were showing trailers for this all over
the place and I was not sold on it. It looked
horrible to me. And then they decided to do some
edits or reshoots or whatever it was. And it
got pushed back. And then I saw they redid the
trailer. I don't know what a few months ago or
whatever and the new version of this trailer
looked much better to me And I remember sitting
in the theater going this looks different. It
feels a little bit different to me I don't know
what they did to it, but I'm actually kind of
excited now, so. Well, I think, too. Last year,
I mean, I had it on a list of things that I was
thinking about, things that I was anticipating,
but it was almost like it was just in a big group.
Like there was, you know, you had Jupiter ascending,
you had Divergent, obviously Hunger Games is
in a little different league, but it was coming
out. You had stuff like Maze Runner and The Giver.
I mean, you had just like a gluttony of of, you
know, these science fiction slash space slash
fantasy, you know, whether it be. looks like
it's somewhat geared towards a younger audience
at times. And I think it almost is better that
it's now being removed from all that. And hopefully
the time spent and the delays are worth it. But
I'm not going to say that I'm going to be surprised
if I'm disappointed with this. So it's just kind
of one that I'm going to take my chances, but
I'm not going to lie. I'm still somewhat looking
forward to it. All right. So all right, Dan,
what's your number five? Well, my next is actually
a remake but it's a remake of a documentary one
of my all -time favorite documentaries man on
wire Directed by Roberts and Mechis again starring
George and Gordon Levitt. I guess, you know,
he'd be another one to think of for that possible
League draft that we're having in the future,
but it is called the walk. Yeah for those that
don't know the movie Is kind of a retelling i
don't know if you would consider to remake since
it's telling the same story of the documentary
but it's about a high water high wire artist
philippe petite is his attempt to cross over
from one of the twin towers to the next and it's
a real -life encounter that happened in the 1970s
and now it's being made by into live -action
film and This one I feel like if you ask me which
one on my list could end up being absolutely
awful I do think this has the possibility of
it just because I don't know like the character
that Gordon leverage portraying I honestly boggles
my mind to see him try to do that type of thinking
of the documentary. So I don't know, I'll hold
off hope maybe he can do it. And Robert Zemeckis
was having, you know, his huge downward spiral
of a career when he got stuck in motion capture,
just doing that over and over again. But he,
you know, he came back a little bit with flight
and ended up getting Denzel. Washington, uh,
another Oscar nomination. So maybe this is kind
of another step on him to the back to the profits
of old. So mainly just, I really loved the documentary,
so I'm hoping it can do that. I actually had
this one ranked. on my list as well, just a little
bit further down. So I'm actually in agreement.
See, I am agreeing with everybody here. So I'm
also looking forward to the walk. Anything Robert
Zemeckis names behind these days, I'm at least
intrigued by it. I'm not necessarily sold, but
I'm at least intrigued. Yeah, this is at number
37 on my list. But I will agree with you, Dan,
that This project could be really fun and really
great because the documentary is incredibly fascinating.
The one thing that I'm curious about and not
just the director, but you were talking about
Joseph Gordon -Levitt. Like if you watch the
documentary, the guy that he is playing, he's
super talkative. He's very fast paced. He's got
a lot of energy to him. So, and Joseph Gordon
-Levitt and some of his roles, you know, I think
of like Inception. He's it's like he's not always
that way at all. Like he's going to have to put
a lot into this performance to make it believable
for those that have seen the documentary, I think.
Yeah, definitely. It is a type of character for
Felipe, who I think really works well in a documentary
because he's so eccentric. Yeah. Kind of hard.
Yeah. Like it's like he seems too big to be real.
When you try to put that person into a movie,
it could seem unauthentic and like it just, you
know, a little bit. Yeah. Corny so it's that's
a challenging. Yeah, I'm gonna take a documentary
try to do it live -action. They're doing it in
more of a dramatic sense. It's Just because it
works in real life doesn't necessarily mean.
Yeah I think that's the only reason why it kind
of fell a little bit further down I think I had
it ranked 29th was because of that Not not necessarily
not being sold on the content and the people
behind it or whatever But if they were gonna
be able to pull it off in a way that was gonna
make it You know good not just for a documentary,
but now for a film. I was I was worried. That's
why it fell a little bit on mine Yeah, if you
if you've seen some like there's like some photos
out for this. It's It looks like an interesting
film though. Either way. I'm I'm excited for
it All right, JD. We're back to you then for
your number four so 2014 was Maybe the best year
for animated film I've seen it in a really long
time because there was five films better than
the Lego movie Yeah, I mean, you know everyone's
complaining and talking a lot about it being
snubbed at the Oscars and you know I would probably
say it's top five but for me I'm not complaining
as much because it would be like fourth or fifth
on my list and I loved it Go listen to our podcast.
I raved about it all year I think it's an amazing
film. But for me, an animated film last year,
it was just incredible. It was such a special,
amazing year. And in a year without Pixar, which
is kind of hard to believe. So at my number four,
I am going with Pixar. They're finally coming
back and they're coming back with what looks
like a really unique movie in Inside Out. So
how was the first day of school? It was fine,
I guess. I don't know. Do you ever look at someone
and wonder what is going on inside their head?
Did you guys pick up on that? Sure did. Something's
wrong. We're gonna find out what's happening,
but we'll need support. Signal the husband. Oh,
she's looking at us. What did she say? What?
Oh, sorry, sir. No one was listening. Is it garbage
night? We left the toilet seat up. What? What
is it, woman? What? Signal him again. Ah, so,
Riley, how was school? For this, we gave up that
Brazilian helicopter pilot? School was great,
alright? What was that? I thought you said we
were gonna act casual. Riley, is everything okay?
Sir, she just rolled her eyes at us. Alright,
make a show of force. I don't want to have to
put the foot down. It looks so original in a
lot of ways. The concept is going to be way over
the kids' heads, but they've made the characters
very goofy and entertaining that I think will
keep the kids laughing throughout, but will entertain
the adults and the parents that are taking their
kids there in a fashion that is just really intriguing
to me. And I really love the cast here. I think
they got a really special cast. I really love
Especially the Louis black cast as anger. That
is just the perfect choice. Like no one else
could have played that I think they started there
and then they meet right Let's make those premise
off of loose black 2014 is gonna be a tough one
to compete against as far as animated films But
you would hope that the year that that Pixar
took You know without releasing a film is gonna
pay off here with this one. Otherwise, it's gonna
I agree Yeah, I mean, and this looks really great.
I love the trailer. It looks like a lot of fun,
but also a lot of high concepts that it's something
that I feel like a lot of us have thought about
at some point. But a lot of these things are
not going to be personified in front of us. And
that's going to be really interesting to see.
My biggest question for this one is, are they
going to be able to because it seems like it's
a film that just within its essence should be
something that appeals to both kids and adults.
It seems like it has a lot of potential there
to speak to all ages And I guess my only question
is are they going to be able to balance that
in a way that doesn't lose either? You know like
the young audience or the older audience My answer
to that is it's Pixar. They're amazing. I mean,
sure, they've kind of tailed off a little bit
of the last few years, but their track record,
I think, speaks for themselves. And they usually
come out with stuff that I think does both incredibly,
incredibly well. And this looks to be back on
track for them. They took Disney's biggest punch
last year, and now it's time for them to get
off the mat. I know they're the same company,
but still. It's also good sign that it is also
coming from the director of up. So that yeah
Yeah, also which is similar which it had in a
concept which you think would be far over the
heads of kids But ends up really working exactly
So I think that you know if for someone's gonna
make that concept work It would be and then you
had this one pretty high on your list as well
I had it on my list not as high as you two Because
I have a different animated film that might be
coming up in the future that everybody that knows
me should be able to predict but I have no problem
with Inside Out being listed. I think that's
got a lot of potential. My number four, I actually
had to go back after I got your guys's list.
I had to go back and make sure that this came
out and is coming out in 2015 because it's not
on either one of your lists. And I'm trying to
figure out why or if I'm just once again on an
island by myself. My number four is called Black
Mass directed by Scott Cooper. who most recently
did Out of the Furnace, starring Johnny Depp,
Kevin Bacon, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton,
Sienna Miller, and Dakota Johnson. That isn't
my top 100, but it didn't make me third. It was
close to making my top 50, too. I mean, I'm definitely
aware of the project. OK, good. Because I thought,
am I looking at one that's not coming out until
2016? Because originally, I did have one or two
films that I found out had been pushed to 2016.
And I'm like, Oh, I got to get those off my list.
But I know that cast is ridiculous, first of
all. And I really liked Scott Cooper with what
he did with Out of the Furnace. So I mean, did
that film have some issues? Yes, it did. But
it was still something that I got enjoyment out
of. And I think the whole idea behind this, the
plot of this crime drama is intriguing. And you
know, I don't even know who in the cast I should
be most looking forward to because that's a lot
of big names Hopefully they can all balance but
like you said we've seen that not work before
but this one's not directed by really Scott so
Yeah, I am correction. I actually do have this
at number 45 on my list. So I am looking forward
to it and Johnny Depp in a movie without makeup,
hopefully a nice supporting role could work We've
seen that not work before. That's true. But is
that the lead here? So maybe that'll help. That's
true. All right, Dan, what's your number four?
My number four is this is a movie. I feel like
I'm putting a lot of faith in mainly because
of the two actors that are starring in it. And
to my favorite actors going today, if they're
in a movie, I'm going to see it. And now they're
in a movie together. So that has me really excited.
Those two actors are Michael Fassbender, of course,
and Brendan Gleason. Who I? Felt gave one of
the best performance last year in Calvary. Yeah,
it's trespass against us and Is the one it's
directed by Adam Smith who is? Rather unproven
director at this point. He's really more work
primarily in television though I have heard from
dr Who fans that he has directed some of the
best dr Who episodes So maybe you know, maybe
he's a great director in the making The actual
the synopsis there's not much of a synopsis at
this point All this is about a man who looks
to find a way to escape the criminal ways of
his outlaw family So not a lot to go on there,
but I just think the potential of having Fassbender
and Brendan Gleeson going toe -to -toe and acting.
Yeah, just gonna be to be great you know there
are two types of actors who tend to own the screen
whenever they come on and seeing them have to
kind of own the screen together i just think
that'll be uh has me super excited so again not
a whole lot to go on but that to me just is a
potential for something i like to maybe just
throw it out there and you know it's kind of
like you know Playing lottery or something. I
might you know might get burned but I Actually
have this one ranked at 21, so I once again for
the record I'm in agreement with you very much
looking forward to this one. I really liked Gleason
and Calvary and Fassbenders obviously everybody's
one of everybody's favorite actors these days
So I think just the idea of those two going against
each other is intriguing So I will be in line
for that one as well opening weekend Assuming
that plays another one near me. Another one I'm
having to add to the list right now. I've never
even heard of it, but that sounds really fun.
JD, what do you have as your number three? Well,
Dan is going to come up with all these awesome
obscure picks that I've never heard of that I'm
going to be writing down. pay close attention
to. But my next one is one that I think a lot
of people are aware of. I'm going with David
O. Russell and Joy for my next film. I love Jennifer
Lawrence. And, you know, as I mentioned when
I was talking about Mockingjay, and if you read
the synopsis about this, it's kind of based on
the life of the who becomes really successful
and to picture Jennifer Lawrence in that kind
of a role, depending on how it's done. But when
I've envisioned that in my mind, it just sounds
awesome. It looks amazing. So, and I trust David
or Russell. I really love what he's done with
turning his career around back in 2010. I really
loved the fighter. I really love silver linings.
I liked American house a lot more than a lot
of other people did. I know that was a little
bit more divisive than the other two, but I love
that we have Jennifer Lawrence teaming up once
again with Bradley Cooper. That's really exciting.
They've been doing some really great work together,
I think. And then we got Robert DeNiro also joining
the team once again from after they did several
lining things together. So I really look forward
to this. I love what David Russell has done as
of late. He doesn't let me down. He always brings
some nice Humor that that I love I think he gets
some of the best humor out of Jennifer Lawrence
I love the emotion that I'm able to to get pulled
out of me and his films as well So I'm really
excited for this one. Joy would be what are we
on number three? Yep, and Dan that one's also
on your list pretty high as well. So obviously
you're in agreement with that Yeah, I mean I
I did enjoy American Hustle and Super Loanings
and the fighter too Tender in really I like David
Russell's films and maybe don't love them as
much as some people but like Janie mentioned
He's really great at getting great performances
out of actors and excited that he's working with
another familiar cast Yeah, I think when you
I think with David Russell, you're always I think
in You're you're you're Gonna have a good chance.
You're gonna watch a good movie. So I think yeah,
yeah, it's a safe silver linings was in my top
five American Hustle I think was in my top 15
and fighters in my top 10 so I mean I'm willing
to as well I think the only reason that I didn't
necessarily rank this one as high as I Probably
would eventually was just the limited amount
of information on odd about it I know David O
Russell and and you know that the actors that
you guys listed should probably be enough But
for some reason I was holding out just to see
something more about it. I want to know too much
I just want to know a little bit Um, I, I just,
I love that Jennifer Lawrence is obviously going
to be the center of attention. And I think her
and Russell's films is probably my favorite acting
she's ever done. I mean, she, she can do dramatic
in those roles. We've seen that, but she's also
hilarious in David or Russell's movies. I mean,
she's, she's never been more endearing than in
a David or Russell movie to me. And I think when
you add on the premise that's involved here,
I think they have a lot to work with. And that
gets me really excited. Yeah. I think those are
all valid points my number three again not necessarily
on your guys's list at least not in the top 30,
but it's something that Brought its way all the
way up to number three on our unique list and
that would be the upcoming drama film called
life About the friendship of life photographer
Dennis stock and Hollywood actor James Dean Again,
you say these names two years ago, and maybe
you don't get the same reaction starring Robert
Pattinson Dane DeHaan, Joel Edgerton, and of
course, Ben Kingsley. Write that name down for
the draft as well. But after seeing Robert Pattinson
last year in The Rover, obviously a new respect
for him. I am a huge James Dean fan, both of
his movies and just kind of the lore around him.
I actually have a picture of James Dean in my
living room over there. So this is just something
that I find intriguing. Anton Corbin. is the
director of this. He did A Most Wanted Man in
2014, which I think I didn't put it in my top
10, but I think kind of went under the radar
a little. And I think it was worth seeing. So
I liked his work with that one. And I'm looking
forward to the movie Life. Dan, I know you had
this rank just not quite as high as I did. Yeah,
I guess my like I only reason I didn't bring
it any higher is because like you mentioned with
Anton Corbin He's a type of director that I think
he really loves his soul plate and slow pace
Especially even in the American which was George
Clooney He just likes to take his time and I
think it works for movies like Almost Wanted
Man and the American which are kind of in that
spy genre, but with a more dramatic film I wonder
if it'll if that will work if it keeps that pace
it can maybe get a little bit too Mean over watch
with with with drama if he continues that but
uh, yeah, like I'm excited to see what they do
they do Han does as James Dean that has me Yeah,
and like you mentioned Robert Pattinson. I think
he's a lot of people think Twilight But like
you mentioned with the Rover and yeah, he's a
legit actor I'm really hoping this isn't a film
come the end of the year that we're saying You
know that had a lot of potential if it was handled
by a different director type thing But because
I think there is potential in the story there.
Yeah, I'm kind of intrigued by this. This is
one that didn't quite make my top 50. If I was
going to do like a top 75, this might have been
in there. But I agree with you. The cast looks
pretty interesting. I'm not a huge, huge fan
of Corbin's work. I mean, I really appreciated
a most wanted man. I thought it was a nice little
flick, but I'm not like super in love with his
films. Right. Alright, then that means it is
your turn for your number three film Well, my
last pick was like a director trying to prove
himself for the first time My next pick is one
as a director who's probably a lot of people
would go with with maybe one of the best directors
today Maybe some people some people may say he's
one of the worst directors today because he loves
Does like to make decisive films and that is
of course town's Terrence Malick in his latest
film night of cups, which is Possibly one of
the weirdest names ever our titles ever. But
uh, yeah I mean it has again a strong cast with
a Terrence Malick film. You never know If someone's
it's just because someone's cast doesn't mean
they're actually gonna play a big part in a movie
like with Sean Penn entry of life But uh, Terrence
Malick has a certain style to him that I know
a lot of people You know tend to not enjoy a
great deal something like tree of life. I remember
I saw that in theaters and I would say I could
75 of the audience was booing by the end so for
those that didn't walk out during it, but I really
liked real life and The first time I saw it was
you know, I think I didn't know what I was getting
into But the more I watched it the more I've
loved it. So definitely looking forward to it
Yeah, I'm right there with you, Dan. I really
like Terrence Malick too, and I really like Tree
of Life, and this is one that I'm definitely
intrigued for. I mean, this was sitting at number
23, I think, on my list, and for all the reasons
that you're talking about, I mean, you just,
you kind of maybe sort of have an idea of what
you're walking into, but you're not actually
going to be sure, and it's going to be one you
and I, I'm sure, will process and talk about
six months afterwards and still try to figure
out. So that's what makes them fun. Exactly.
I haven't loved everything Terrence Malick did.
I was not a big fan of To the Wonder. Yeah, me
either. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. I thought that
was just, it felt like the, you know, little
unforgotten cousins of Tree of Life or something.
It just did not work for me. I agree. But I'm
curious to see what, you know, what he can do
next. And I think maybe To the Wonder was just
too soon of a film because he tends to take a
long time between movies. So maybe now he's taking
a year or two. It might be time for me to give
this guy another chance I I wanted to put this
on my list based on on the cast and the write
-up until I saw his name and then immediately
Kicked it off of my top 50 I think but That is
only because I've only seen one of his films.
So I really need to give him a better chance
And another chance. It's been a long time since
1998 and the thin red line. So maybe Maybe this
will get me back into his his good graces because
the thin red line is one of my least favorite
films of all time I love that film, too You and
I just get a lot great. Yeah, I don't know if
it like I said being Big into history, and I
think I just had the wrong expectations going
into that film. Probably. And I was not prepared
to see the two and a half hours of scenery that
I saw. So but that was a long time ago. And again,
I haven't seen that film for almost 16 years
or something. So I should maybe even rewatch
that film, because a lot of people like it. So
maybe I will give Night of Cups a chance if there
was ever a bet that. that somebody did to make
me watch a film that might be one of them that
they would have to choose. But again, a lot of
intriguing things about that film. So I'm not
going to rip on it when I haven't even seen anything
about it yet. All right. So that brings it back
to JD for his number two. Oh, man. I really decided
to talk about these next two and especially this
next one, because I'm pretty sure one of you
might feel a little bit differently than I do.
Uh, for those that listed to our incision film
award show or our top 10 show, you know that
I was a huge fan of Birdman. Absolutely loved
it. I think what Alejandro Gonzalez Inarrito
did with that was really special. And right now
he's shooting another film that sounds just as
special. And for my number two, I'm going with
the Revenant. And it's not only that it's Alejandro
Inarrito. It's not even And that he is also once
again, teaming up with Emmanuel Lubezki, his
cinematography or cinematographer from Birdman.
But when you add that and then you add a cast
of Tom Hardy, my boy, Tom Hardy and Leonardo
DiCaprio kind of going toe to toe. uh yeah that's
all you have to say and on top of that the story
sounds really intriguing about it's this thriller
set in the 1820s where i'm assuming leo is the
lead here he's uh basically mauled in the woods
his friends abandon him and he goes after for
Wrench and that sounds freaking awesome to me
and they're only shooting this film with natural
light So on the technical side, it sounds awesome.
The cast sounds awesome. The story sounds awesome
This whole project sounds freaking awesome. I
can not wait Yeah, and look that's in my list
too, it's not I think it's in my top 40 ish or
40 ish. I'm not Not sure. I did really like Birdran
as well My only issue is I haven't liked Eerie
2's other films all that much. I, you know, things
like Babble or 21 Grams, which were just like
Misery Fast upon Misery Fast. And which is kind
of why I like Birdman so much because it's like,
oh, this guy actually has a sense of humor. So
I'm just hoping that he can kind of keep with
that in some ways with with the Revenant. It
doesn't seem like it'll be a movie that's going
to be. All you know anything like babble or 21
gram so I am holding out hope and like you mentioned
the cast involved us Does have me intrigued anything
with you know, leo and tom hardy. That's a pretty
good combination for for the right hand Yeah
for the record. I do have this in my top 50 Okay,
so um, I am more like more likely to see this
than the knight of cups. Um, I am super intrigued.
Um by you know, leonardo and tom hardy Playing
off of each other. Um, I Don't want to sound
like this is gonna sound but I Do think it would
be it's gonna be an interesting achievement as
far as doing the whole thing with the natural
light And I think that'll be interesting Sure,
my fear is is that there are people out there
and I will try not to be one of them We'll we'll
see that Birdman done one year with one certain
Way of filming and then this one done the next
year with another unique way of filming that
people might take some exception to that. In
a way of saying, oh, this guy is just, you know,
trying to do, you know, I don't want to use the
word, Dan, but but one gimmick after the other.
And I'm hoping if it's a, you know, if it's a
good film that people aren't going to use that
against it. But I am intrigued to see how that
plays out and how that kind of turns out. My
my response to that would be that. film, I think,
and so many different ways is meant to be an
experience, whether that's an adventure or fun
or something emotional, but it's meant to be
an experience. And I think what Birdman did,
whether you liked it or not, I think the one
shot take and all that sort of stuff, it was
supposed to put you into this hysteria of this
backstage play and what was going on with the
characters there. And it gave you an experience.
Now, some people may not have liked that. I loved
it. And I think all that Alejandro Enrito is
doing here, and really what Emmanuel Lubezki
is doing, because even outside of him, but also
what he's done with Alfonso Cuarón as well, is
that he is giving you that experience in a really
interesting and unique way that I've loved. No
matter what director Lubezki has worked for,
I've loved what he's done from a visual style.
It only enhances that experience. Obviously with
films, it's more than just cinematography. There's
got to be a lot of other parts involved. But
usually with what he's doing, it just adds to
that for me. So that's how I would take it. And
that's how I would hope people would take it
is don't compare it to necessarily anything else.
Just enjoy the experience that they're trying
to give you. And I think this is the type of
a film and a setting and a storyline where it
makes sense to do what he's doing. And I think
it should add something to it. And I'm not opposed
to that I do think there are some people out
there doing certain things Just to get the attention
that they're doing those certain things Sure,
but I don't necessarily see that as the case
with with either Birdman or this And I think
this is the right type of setting to try that
I'm hoping it all works because I am gonna I'm
gonna You know sit down and pay money to watch
this. Yeah, and and hopefully hopefully enjoy
it. So And it's they're shooting this in Canada
right now and there's gonna be a lot of snow
on the ground So shooting a natural light with
the reflection off of the snow makes sense as
well So, I mean it I think it's gonna work. It
should work And it's I think natural lighting
is not necessarily something that's so all struck
or something that's going to be so noticeable
to most people, you know, because, you know,
it's not like it's revolutionary is nothing that
people have done before. Yeah. I think for the
thought that it is, it makes sense. There's probably
a lot of movies people watch that have rely on
natural lighting. They don't even realize it.
It just depends on what you're trying to do with
your cinematographer. So yeah. All right. That
is up to me then for my number two. Again, if
there is one on my list that I'm going to be
wrong about. Not that there hasn't been a couple
options there, but if there's one, it's probably
going to be this one. But I will watch this gentleman's
movies no matter what. And the director is Kevin
Reynolds. Ignore Waterworld, people. Ignore Waterworld.
He did the Count of Monte Cristo, which is one
of probably my top 10 films of all time. And
so ever since then, I have signed up. hook line
is thinker for whatever he does he's doing a
movie called Clavius I could be pronouncing that
wrong which is basically the resurrection story
from the Bible starring Tom Felton Josephine's
Peter Firth and I'm assuming eventually Jim Caviezel
just kidding, but I Don't know if it'll be on
the same type of you know when you do stories
based on Biblical goings -ons. You take a chance,
you know, you could have something on the level
of a Passion of the Christ or you could have
something that's as far from that as possible
and could be... Like Exodus? Yes. Or some other
films that have come out, you know, throughout
different, you know, left behind. No, that's
not really... But uh, so yeah, I mean I I'm taking
a big chance of even listing this here, but I
think Regardless of if you like Kevin Reynolds
work or not. He did Tristan and I sold kind of
Monte Cristo Robin Hood Prince of Thieves And
some other things that I won't mention because
it'll make him sound not as good But when you
combine him with a few of those people in the
story, I'm willing to give it a shot I know I
can get burned on this one, but Don't know. I
know I'm probably one of the only people that
will list this on their list But I don't even
know if it'll play in the theater near me, but
if it is I will at least give it a shot I'm I'm
really not one I was aware of so I'm pretty intrigued
by it just because you know the events that they're
wanting to depict is after his Body is missing
right like that's not something that even the
biblical text talks about a ton. So I'm really
intrigued to see what they're going to do for
a two hour length film and what they're going
to explore itself. I think raises interesting
questions. That's pretty intriguing. Yeah. So,
I mean, obviously they'll have to wait and see
more. I mean, this is one that you almost have
to see a trailer first, just to get the feel
and the tone of what they're doing. Because there
can always be a lot of different Emotions or
or kind of tonal settings that you put on these
types of films and it can kind of make or break
it So I will you know kind of reserve judgment
until I see more But just based on the depiction
or the events that there are depicting and some
of the people connected to it It was enough for
me to put it on the list Very cool. All right,
Dan second to last one here before we get into
our comment picks. What do you got? Yeah, what
my one comes from a director that I was not aware
of until last year when he came out with Blue
Ruin which I Really loved and ended up making
my top 10 of last year Jeremy so yeah, he was
coming out with a new movie this year I guess
in in relation to blue room. He this year's coming
out with green room and in his third film he's
getting some actually like true acting talent
to with Patrick Stewart and and telling Yelchin
joining and the the concept is A lot different
than the last movie, which was a very, you know,
crime thriller focusing on revenge. It's about
a young punk rock band that finds themselves
trapped in a secluded venue after stumbling upon
a horrific act of violence. So it's just I'm
interested about what that's going to be like.
And with Patrick Stewart attached, that has me.
Yeah. And so and like, I love Leroy and I love
what he did there. So after that, I'll see anything
he does until he disappoints me. So that's a
green room. And I'm not sure when it's coming
out, but hopefully. Hopefully soon. And JD, you
have that on your list as well. Yeah, this was
number 17 for me. And I agree with you, Dad.
You do a small little film called Blue Ruin,
and then your next project, you're able to get
Patrick Stewart. You must be doing something
right. But yeah, I mean, for all the reasons
that you said, it looks intriguing. The cast
looks great. And based off of what I saw in Blue
Ruin, yeah, I can't wait to see another film
from him. Looks looks pretty exciting to me All
right number one. Is that where we're at? We're
at our number one JD. What do you got? Yeah number
one is a director We've kind of already talked
about I cannot wait to see this my number one
I'm going with Brad Bird and Tomorrowland What
if there was a place? Nothing was impossible
This is a guy who did the Iron Giant, the Incredibles,
Ratatouille. And, you know, we already talked
about Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, which
is my favorite of the Mission Impossible movies.
And I just have no reason to doubt this guy at
all based on just the information we have. And
then they released that trailer and When I saw
the trailer, I had no idea what I was watching.
I didn't even know it was a Brad Bird movie to
begin with. I went into it blind and... It just
blew me away. I love the fantasy element and
how that intertwines with kind of this real world
setting that we see at the beginning just looks
amazing. And you add on top of that the cast
that he's having to work with and just kind of
this setting and the world that he's going to
thrust this into just looks amazing. And I don't
know anything about Tomorrowland. I don't know
anything about the script or where we're going.
I'm just excited based off of what I know. I
mean, you could just tell me Brad Bird's name
and be like, yeah, here's my money. I'll go see
it. But then you add in all these other things
I just talked about. And I'm super hyped for
this. In fact, I will probably I don't want anything
to be ruined. I don't need to see a second trailer.
I don't need to see a poster. All I need is the
release date to get here. I'll give you my money
as soon as I possibly can. And I'll sit in that
theater. I mean I'll pay for a ticket right now
if I could Is George not George Clooney is a
voiceover in the trailer just as effective as
Matthew McConaughey's last year in interstellar
as far as a trailer goes oh For me personally,
I mean, I I think it's more than just Clooney's
voice though I think I think his voice works
great, but I think it's the dialogue that he's
delivering on top of yeah The visual elements
that were given there all of that just in the
music I mean it just all comes together and works
great But yeah, I think Clooney's voice works
really great in that trailer It gave me that
same type of feel that we had when we just had
the straight, you know monologue from Matthew
McConaughey and interstellar before any hopes
were dashed or whatever But uh just kind of that
same epic feel to it and dan you had this one
high pretty high ranked on your list as well
Yeah, it's in like my top 15 or so and uh I've
heard it's like a really great visual storyteller
like he didn't say so much without without any
words being spoken and yeah him in a movie called
Tomorrowland and that potential I think it's
just he can use that talent a lot of great ways
So that has been really intrigued and George
Clooney attached also to he's he's got a great
movie mind as well So seeing those two work together
could hopefully use something great. I agree.
I can't wait. I'm super I'm super excited Alright,
so early on I had said that I was gonna save
it an animated movie for a bit later And I guess
since we're down to our number one spot. I've
ran out of slots to talk about it So I'll talk
about it here I would like to mention though
that my number one on my unique list is actually
number eight on my overall list So my top seven
are all the ones that we all three had in common
So I guess I don't differ very much this year
from from everybody. So my number eight overall
my number one on the unique list I'm going with
the Minions, because I'm a sucker. Finding a
master was easy keeping a master that's where
things got tricky Without a master they had no
purpose they became aimless and depressed If
this went on much longer, they would surely perish
then one minion stepped forward Kevin felt pride
he was going to be the one to find his tribe
the biggest baddest villain to serve Stuart felt
Hungry mostly he was going to be the one to eat
this banana and Bob Bob was frightened of the
journey ahead I'm still living off of the love
from the original Despicable Me Regardless of
how much money the second one made even though
it was inferior And this is already I think Danny's
you probably it's stated that this movie when
we talked about the The first news about this
or something. I think you had mentioned that
it's already making money. I think I gotta say
though I do even though I was a little disappointed
with the with the second despicable me I Absolutely
love the trailer for this And I love that. It's
like a prequel so to speak as they're going at
least from the trailer could be completely different
when we get to the movie, but of the minions
looking for Someone to lead them and how they're
going through time trying to find that person
before they eventually Wind up with grew I I
love the first movie so much. It's one of my
favorite animated films of the last what 10 15
years camera what year came out, but Animated
film that I love quoting and I don't usually
do that with any films So I am definitely gonna
be there opening weekend to see the minions even
if inside out possibly has more potential Here's
the thing I was gonna say here's my thing with
the minions is Okay, so earlier we were talking
about box office, right? And we I think we know
what the number one and number two spots were
gonna be I think when you toss up What the number
first what the number three spot could be it
could be mocking jay part two. It could be specter
Uh, maybe jurassic world I think minions has
a really really high chance of taking that third
spot. I mean this sneaky Despicable me too made
over a billion dollars a billion million dollars
and it was inferior as you were saying to the
first Despicable Me movie. These things just
are money machines and now they have their own
movie. For 52 weeks out of the year. Crazy. This
I think will outdo, I think it'll outdo Despicable
Me 2. I think it's going to make buttloads of
money. I think Inside Out will be a highly, you
know, highly better movie. I think it's going
to be better criticized, but this movie Minions
is going to... They're counting money right now
like it's gonna do its best a lego movie impersonation
Make a crap ton of money and we will not hear
about it ever after that Yeah, so crazy that
is my number one dan. What is yours? My number
one actually is my number overall. I guess number
two on my list and it comes from a director that
Last two years he had a movie in my top 10 and
last year was boyhood the year before that before
midnight. And next year or this year, he'd say
he is coming out with another film. That director,
of course, is Richard Linklater. And the movie
that he's coming out with is that's what I'm
talking about, which is, from what I hear, a
spiritual sequel. Yeah. To this. I forget the
name of the. These are confused from so that
has me super excited. I love it. We're drilling
player style. The last, you know, like I mentioned,
like everything you've been doing lately has
been hitting it out of the park, in my opinion.
So and just seeing him kind of going back and
doing a period piece again has me has me excited.
So I hope he kind of it's. like a lot of huge
amount of information on the plot quite yet and
You know the cast is, you know, relatively unknown
for the most part But uh just with Richard link
later attached It's it's really what's driving
me to put it up to sign for the record on the
idiot that doesn't have it on my list But that's
not saying I'm not looking forward to it. It's
say days and confused and I'm interested I haven't
been as big of a person on the Richard link later
Wagon I guess because I've missed a bunch of
his films But I'll try to rectify that and get
just as much excitement behind this as everybody
else does because JD you have this very high
on your list as well Yes, this is sitting at
number seven for me on my true list and for all
the reasons you're talking about Dan I mean,
I loved boyhood. It didn't quite make my top
10 of 2014, but it was very Very, very, very
close. And before Midnight was in my top five
of 2013. So, I mean, everything this guy does,
I love. I mean, the Before series, I think, is
my favorite trilogy of all time. It's incredible.
I love every second of it. And I love the realism
and how natural and authentic just his characters
are. I mean, just some of the best conversations
you'll ever see in experience in film. Just true
emotion. I love everything Linklater does. So,
and I love that this is kind of a pseudo sequel
to Dazed and confused and you know, even kind
of boyhood really because it from what I know
it it it picks up with the kid moving into his
college dorm room in the very first scene of
this movie, which is exactly where boy had left
off. So I'm excited to see what he does with
that. It's it's gonna be pretty awesome. I think
Alright, so that is the unique list that we each
had if you take out the ones that we all three
had in common I do want to say real quick There
was two films that we didn't talk about that
did appear in two of the three lists Just we
didn't have them ranked high enough to talk about
them I had Southpaw ranked at 30 and JD you had
it at 25th So we both had Southpaw on our list
So I do want to give that a mention and then
you guys each had the same number 30 furious
seven so All right. So those are a couple films
that at least appeared on multiple lists. For
the sake of time, since we are all film geeks
and we talk a lot when we start talking about
films, we're not going to give a huge amount
of information for our common films. We're going
to take a quick break when we'll be back and
we'll give you the quick rundown of the nine
films that all three of us are looking forward
to. Now, for a behind -the -scenes look at GeekCast
Radio Network's newest show, Talking in Circles!
So, Chuck, Greg, what are you guys thinking for
this week's show? Well, Dan, how about we just
talk about the things that we've read or watched
this week? We do reviews like that every week,
Chuck. How about a game, like Factor Fiction,
or The Power of Names? Those are great, and we're
always coming up with new ideas for games. And
how about some Top 5s? You know how I love my
Top 5s. What about tournament style brackets
or sequel reboot and destroy who will win in
a fight taking too far crazy, but true news or
yes It appears we have lots of things to work
on Listen to talking in circles taking timeless
topics in new directions every Tuesday on iTunes
or geek cast radio .com the geek cast radio network
Hey, Dan, who's the guy with the creepy voice?
Alright, thanks for sticking with us. And like
I said, now it's time for the nine films that
all three of us had in common that we're all
looking forward to for 2015. Most of these won't
need a lot said about them because everybody
knows about them, hopefully. And I'm gonna give
it in order. We just averaged out how we had
them all ranked to give us somewhat of an order.
So our number ninth pick that we all had in common
was the film Chappy. I brought you into this
world. A machine that can think and feel. That's
it. Come. Come. Come in, little buddy. That's
a watch. That's a watch. Watch! It's like a child.
It has to learn. Your name? Chappie. Chappie.
Anything you want to do in your life, you can
do. Write poetry, have original ideas. Wow. People
are always fearful of something they don't understand.
The problem with artificial intelligence is it's
way too unpredictable. GD or Dan, any comments
about Chappie? I just, you know, Neil Plomkamp
does robots well. So I'm interested in seeing
what he does with the movie centering on like,
you know, intelligent robot. I've actually tried
to not watch the trailer. I've been skipping
it. So I'm just kind of going in. That's impressive
because I think it's the most shown trailer in
the country right now. It doesn't matter what
film you go see. You see a trailer for Chappie.
Yeah. So I haven't seen this. I haven't seen
the second trailer. I've only seen the teaser
and I loved it. Absolutely loved it. In fact,
as soon as I got home from seeing it in the theaters,
as you were just talking about, I downloaded
the trailer music immediately. So I absolutely
love it. And I don't care how cheesy it looks.
I don't care if these themes have been tackled
before. I like Neil Blomkamp overall, even though
Elysium was a little bit of a disappointment
for me. I'm on board. I'm super excited for this
one as well. And I'd watch this type of film
no matter what, just because I like this genre.
And it was at number seven on my list. So I had
the highest amongst us, so hopefully it does
not disappoint. I also had our number eight film,
The Highest Among Us, and that would be Jurassic
World. Evacuate the island. She's a highly intelligent
animal. She'll kill anything that moves You guys
had this more towards your 25 26 range I have
it in my top 10 just because I'm a sucker And
maybe I was the right age when when the original
Jurassic Park came out to to really have that
nostalgic? Grasp firmly around me for that film
regardless of what happened after Jurassic Park
So hopefully they can recapture some of that
and not go the way that the house did Yeah, well
dressing park is in my all -time top five favorite
films. So it's I do have that nostalgia for it
I'm just you know, I'm looking forward to it.
I'm just a little Hesitant just because it's
every other movie that's come after Jurassic
Park has been you know a disappointment So yeah,
I I like what I've seen so far the idea of genetic
dinosaurs like enhanced dinosaurs does have me
You know wondering how that's gonna work, but
yeah, you know and Chris Pratt has me interested
to. Yeah, Chris Pratt's on fire right now. I
really like the director here, Colin Trevorrow.
He hasn't done a film on this level, though.
So that is a little bit concerning, although
the trailer, I think, is pretty intriguing. I'm
pretty excited for it, too. But like you guys
were saying, Jurassic Park 2 and 3, pretty much
a downer. Hopefully this gets us back on track.
And I'm excited to be back in this world. But
I guess we'll see. But I'm excited for it either
way. Alright number seven that we all had in
common. We actually all had this one pretty Similar
places and that would be the film silence Again
an example probably of just putting a director's
name next to a film and it was directing this
again Martin. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah That's
all I need to know So, yeah, I mean, yeah, silence
is our next one up. We all had it within, you
know, like the eight to 16 mark. I don't even
want to know anything about the film. Just tell
me where to sit. What day? And I'll show up and
then just put the film on. Where can I pay? The
only worry is that it will. Yeah. Yeah. My only
worry is that it might not come out this year
because it hasn't started filming yet. So that's
my only concern is that maybe this will be one
that we have on next year's list as well. Well,
then we'll have it on our most common list next
year as well. For next up, let's see, what are
we at? Number six here? Yes, number six. Again,
another example of put a director's name on something
and we will all just like sheep. Show up at the
theater, especially if you put this combination
of Spielberg and Tom Hanks together And that
would be the Cold War thriller. I believe the
title is gonna be st. James place, but I don't
know if that's been confirmed It hasn't it was
and then it wasn't so I think it's still gotcha
I actually had this number two on my list overall
Again, this is any time you put any type of historical
thing and then put Spielberg next to it and Tom
Hanks in there Full board ahead and ready for
that. So They should just leave it untitled untitled.
It doesn't mean it Yeah, just leave it as that
put Spielberg and Tom Hanks do a movie and They
would just be like in the winter is Steven Spielberg
and Tom Hanks did a movie Alright, so moving
on to our number fifth pick in common. Dan had
this one a little higher than the other two of
us and that would be Spectre. Dan, this is your
number one. That's my number one. I, you know,
I wasn't, I did not, I was not a born James Bond
fan. I kind of became a fan the first Bond film
I actually saw in theaters was Quantum of Solace
mostly because, you know, I loved Casino Royale.
It's all really surprised me and got me into
the franchise. And then when, uh, Skyfall came
out a few years ago and at the 50th anniversary
ended up going through all the Bond films and
been watching them So I've really grown into
a great Bond fan into a rather large Bond fan,
and I love skyfall I love Sam Mendes and what
he did with that franchise I think skyfall ranks
up near the top of all the franchise films that
in the series And seeing him coming back, he
is losing Roger Deakins as his D .P., but he's
getting the D .P. who did Interstellar. Let the
right one in and her. So though Deakins is leaving
excited about losing much. Yeah. And one of the
best things about Skyfall was a cinematography,
which is a weird thing to say about a James Bond
film. But it was. Yeah. But Sam Indy's is known
for, I think. Teaming up with great visuals of
it great Cinematographer, so I think he'll do
that also may have my my have my early pick for
villain of the year Yeah, yeah and bringing back
specter which is a classic bond, you know team
and has not been in a movie Official James Bond
film since I think Thunderball or I forget the
last one actually now I think it was times are
forever was last time any like a any member of
specter which in a film so it's a lot of people
been waiting for this to come and now JD I think
you guys are having a talk on this upon one of
your episodes as as far as the idea of Christoph
Waltz being A villain and being able to pull
it off. Yeah, and I'm full in agreement with
you I believe it was you on that thing that saying
that that's a perfect casting Yeah, I love that.
Yeah, we debated I can't remember exactly who
was guesting on that but I know Brendan would
and the guest on that show was fighting me on
that they thought But it was maybe too stereotypical
of a choice or, you know, maybe Kristoff Watts
should do something else. But I mean, when you're
talking about this kind of role and yeah, maybe
it fits into his mold, but he does this really
well. And I'm excited to see what he's able to
do with it. And I think we have the. And I think
it's going to fit this world amazingly well.
I'm hugely excited for it. To me, it's it's like
we've seen hints of what he could do with this
type of role, but he hasn't gotten this role
yet. Yeah, is how I can see like I see he has
all the makings to do this role, but he hasn't
had like a full -on to me character like What
he's probably gonna get with this that he can
just really take and and then kind of craft into
his own Hopefully a big villain. So I'm I think
that was also technically the first time I ever
was on your side in an argument between People
talking about movies it happens from time to
time So moving on to our number fourth in common
Dan and I had this slightly higher than you JD
But but we were all in agreement that we're looking
forward to Mad Max Fury Road My world is fire
and blood. Everything is dependent on oil. We
are killing for gasoline. The world is almost
out of water. Water. Now there's the water wars.
Here they come again. Everybody's gone out of
their mind. Dan? you had this number four i just
yeah hearing the project coming up was like i
don't know you know i don't know if this this
franchise kind of seems like it's kind of come
and gone But then I saw the trailer and like
I'm in so that's really all it's based upon I
was just like that trailers is one of the best
trailers I've seen and like I can't even yeah,
it's amazing five or six years It's just such
a you know, and again Tom Hardy is attached as
well and Charlie's there on so I'm hoping I'm
hoping that you know It can actually bring this
franchise back to what it once was it's gonna
give me a reason to rewatch all the other films
as well So I I had this ranked number three,
so I'm definitely looking forward to this a trailer.
Like I said It's a like or like you said, it's
a idea that originally might have not sounded
great But I think as soon as everybody saw that
trailer they were there signed up and paid for
their advance ticket Yeah, and George Miller
back to direct pretty exciting as well. Yeah
So especially coming off of Happy Feet 2. What
a juxtaposition that is, right? Well, the last
time we did a live action movie was Bay Piggins.
It's gonna be weird. Big transition back to this.
Hopefully there's no rust to shake off there.
Our number three, I guess we're all in agreement
on this one. We had this ranked respectively
fifth, third, and sixth if we're going me, Dan,
and JD around the table here. And that would
be our number three film in common, The Hateful
Eight. So I guess we're all happy that this actually
became a movie and wasn't abandoned as it was
once rumored to be I mean I can understand Quentin
Tarantino be a little bit upset about that, but
I'm glad he was able to just swallow his anger
Swallow his pride a little bit. Let's just make
this and make it awesome and I'm sorry who was
drunk. I think that's what he's doing. Yeah I
didn't even know that I'm even more excited.
Um, yeah, this has all the makings of another
great film and he's coming off of a couple real
real great ones in my opinion, so Enchanting
Tato with Tarantino. Yeah, I love that. Love
that combo So we're all signed up for the hateful
eight and that means there's only two spots left
for those that are I wonder what these are. You
might know what these are. We'll start with our
number two. I had a number four on my list. Dan,
you had a number eight on your list. JD, this
is the top of your list. Number two would be
Avengers Age of Ultron. This vulnerable world
needs something more powerful than any of us.
Everyone creates the thing they dread. Ultra
in the flesh. No matter who wins or loses, trouble
always comes around. You metal do something you
don't understand. We have no place in the world.
Yes, yeah, and that's all we need to say about
that So I mean if you're not going to see this
you are the only person on the planet because
it's gonna make over Six hundred million dollars.
So just domestically the question is it's gonna
make a million dollars Yeah The only question
is which movie will make more money this or our
number one in common? Which Dan had at number
six JD you had at number two and I of course
had at number one as I drink out Of a Star Wars
cup myself here right now as we're recording
this Star Wars The Force Awakens will be our
number one in common home I would be surprised
if Star Wars doesn't take home Just because I
think Star Wars has It just has more legs underneath
it. I mean Marvel has been great I love what
they've been doing, but it's still relatively
new when it comes to the film game I mean Star
Wars has been around a lot longer has more generations
attached to it And it's got both old and younger
generations. So I mean I'd be I'd be honestly
shocked if it doesn't take home the box office
unless for whatever reason I don't foresee this
happening unless the reviews come out and it's
not very good and people you know I could see
that I still think it's gonna make a ton of money
either way but as far as the number one and number
two goes that would be the only reason I would
see it changing but I'd be shocked if Star Wars
didn't take home. The box office award in 2015,
but Avengers are gonna be great. It's obviously
gonna make a lot of money, too It just it that
franchise just doesn't have as much legs to it.
Yeah, it's gonna be interesting I mean the last
Avengers made I think a 600 million domestically
the highest grossing in the Star Wars movie ever
has only made 400 Now obviously you have this
is that and count inflation though. No, that's
what I'm saying So I mean you can't factor that
into and the highest grossing whenever I believe
if I look right was the Phantom Menace and they
just needed they just needed beat that to kind
of wipe that right so i mean even if it's even
if it becomes the most it could be the the highest
gross in star wars film ever and still not beat
avengers possibly but that's the debate that
dan and i uh and matt are going to get even more
into when we talk about our box office predictions
obviously those are going to be the number one
and two it's just going to depend on who puts
which one where um and we've actually expanded
it last year we did our top 10 this year we're
going to because of some obvious ones at the
top we're going to actually expand it to the
top 15 since uh the top list is is pretty predictable
outside of what order they actually fall in.
So, in common we had Chappie, Jurassic World,
Silence, the Steven Spielberg Cold War thriller,
Spectre, Mad Max, The Hateful Eight, The Avengers,
and Star Wars The Force Awakens. Hopefully between
those and some of the other 30 films that we
mentioned you've added one or two to your list
like JD did during the record. Of films you want
to see in 2015. What is your overall just real
quick and closing? I'll start with you JD. What's
your overall look at 2015? Remember as we open
this was the year that everybody was freaking
out about there was so much coming out in 2015
the world was gonna explode Now that it's actually
here. What are your feelings as you look towards
2015? Yeah, I mean I just think this could be
an amazing year. You know, I know you and I have
argued back and forth on 2014, which was a year
that I loved. Absolutely loved 2014. It was very
consistent from the springtime all the way through.
to December for me anyway. And when I look at
2015 on paper, anyway, it looks to be the same
way. I mean, and we're getting films from directors
we haven't seen in the last couple of years,
which is exciting. You know, just in terms of
the big blockbusters, you know, you look at Star
Wars, you look at Avengers, who thought that
we would get those two movies in the exact same
year? It's gonna be crazy. And there's rumors
about maybe a possible DC film. might make an
appearance too, which would be even crazier.
But even outside of that, I think everything
from the blockbusters to these small indie films
that are being made, it just looks like it's
going to be one heck of a year. You know, my
only concern, because this is a big genre for
me, is the animated genre. Like I said, 2014
was a superb year outside of Pixar's film, Inside
Out. It's a little questionable to me. So we'll
see. We'll see how that goes. I just I love that
genre, but everything else looks amazing. I just
think this is going to be a hell of a year. Yeah,
I think so too. I think it has a lot of potential
and you know kind of like Dan and I said when
we were talking down our top 10 films of 2014,
it wasn't that I thought 2014 was a bad year.
I think it did have a consistently a lot of interesting
films, a lot of unique films. Somewhat buck the
trend of that the only thing Hollywood offers
is, you know, remakes and reboots and sequels
and stuff like that. There were so many unique
films to see in 2014. My only issue with 2014
comparatively to like 2012 and 2013 or some of
the previous years, I just didn't have that film
that just floored me. I had a whole bunch of
films that I liked and that entertained me, but
I didn't have that one that just knocked me down
and said, this is a... you know one of the best
films of the decade type thing where which i
got with like her 12 years of slave um and some
of the other things like Les Mis um and some
of those types of films so i still think it was
a good film overall and i think it's it'd be
interesting also as a contrasting year to 2015
which is chock full of franchise films of remakes
of reboots of sequels And it's kind of crazy
because 2014 you could argue is maybe the best
year for the superhero genre or even kind of
blockbusters we've seen. I mean, with cap two
and which a lot of people say are maybe they're
too favorable. And then you have Dawn of the
Planet of the Apes, which was very close to my
top 10. And I know that was the case for a lot
of people. So it just seemed like it was a really
great year. for those kinds of films and the
animated genre as I talked about it. And if you're
like me who liked Whiplash and Birdman, you did
get those art house indie films that did kind
of for you as well. So, I mean, I know not everyone's
going to feel the same way I did, but I think
in general, though, there was so much to appreciate
about last year and this year just looks even
better. Yeah, I agree. And what are your overall
thoughts on 2015? Yeah, I think, I mean, you
have a year that is going to have a film from
Tarantino, Richard Linklater. Spielberg, Gus
Van Sant, Terrence Malick, J .J. Abrams, Josh
Whedon. I mean, if you look at some of the big
directors of today. Yeah, they're like all coming
out with movies next year. So that has me intrigued
plus a lot of like young directors They're you
know, like we mentioned some directors that are
coming off of a really strong movie from last
year or two years ago I mean wouldn't be reason
I did a top 100 because I started putting it
together. I'm like, well, there's just a lot
Yeah, yeah, you know this diverse films that
are coming out and from I mean like I think Tom
Hardy himself has like seven movies coming out
this only only surpassed by Michael Fassbender
Yeah, exactly. I think Fassbender and Hemsworth
are having this competition to see who could
be in the most movies in one given year. Crazy.
But yeah, but in the end we all win because they're
all great actors. It could be. Yeah, I think
2015 has a lot of potential and a lot of people
are going to point to the blockbusters. But I
think, you know, for like a cinephile or art
house standpoint, there's actually maybe even
more to be excited about. Just, you know, a lot
of people that are coming out with movies. I
mean, even like John Hillcoats coming out with
the film this year and Warren Beatty is coming
back from doing the movie and he hasn't done
one since the 90s. So I think there's a lot of
intrigue coming in. Could be a very interesting
class for a best director next a year from now
in the Oscars. It could be an interesting group
of people if some of these films actually kind
of build, you know, follow through with their
potential. Um, and another group of films that
we haven't talked about, we won't have time to
go into here, but is the foreign language films.
Uh, there's several, I mean, I probably have
10 or so, uh, foreign language films I could
talk about that I'm really excited about as well.
So, I mean, you add in that group as well. And
on paper, just, it's going to be a great year,
hopefully. So yeah, um, definitely chime in,
