CINEMA GEEKS
Top 10 Comic Book Films of the Decade

About this Episode
Hey, this is Greg burger and you are listening
to the geek cast radio network Hello and welcome
to episode 188 of the cinema geeks I am one of
your cinema geeks optimus solo and joining me
for today's record is movie revolt and hello
Dan Hello, how's it going? Going it is going
a new world that I'm living in right now. Yeah
Congratulations, by the way Thank you. The little
daughter is one week and one day old. No one
week and two days old now It's flying by already.
You don't know I don't it's all a blur Also,
we spent the first five days in the hospital.
So it was a quite an ordeal but Everything's
good. So we're back home and we're good to go.
So a little seersha Quinn so She's doing good.
But we are here to continue our series in our
Best movies of the decade list. We've already
done science fiction. We have also done Animation
and now today we're gonna continue that by looking
at the world of movies based on comic books And
we are not alone as you heard there are some
guests here. So joining Dan and myself the dynamic
duo returns. Mr. DJ Valentine. Hello Which Sir
Charonan movies are you gonna make your daughter
listen to first or watch further? It's gonna
be Hannah. We're gonna LadyBerry where we're
going with it Yeah, it's gonna be interesting
what we choose first. I think some of them will
come later down the road What was interesting
a side note here? We were our Amanda and I were
watching a bunch of animated films trying to
catch up before Dan and Amanda myself and JD
did the top animated films of the decade and
one of the songs that we are one of the songs
one of the movies that we watched to catch up
was song of the song of the sea i think i said
that right and the main girl's name in there
is seersha and uh that was the first time i've
heard a like a character name that in a movie
so uh we'll have to show that probably before
we get to any of the the live action stuff but
uh it'll be cool um it was kind of weird too
because it was like right beforehand and we were
still solidifying the name and this that and
the other and i was like oh She has a movie that
has a character with her name in it. So that's
cool. I'm done I'm Legitimize right right, right.
I guess we're good to go then. Um, and DJ is
not alone He brought his partner in crime Matthew
Stewart. Hello partner in crime Always department
crime to be committed Matthew 15 20 Obviously
we had these guys on with the science fiction
but felt like there's no better duel to also
come in and talk about comic book films So bring
them back return appearance. Sorry if you don't
like the sound of their voice, but they're here
to stay I like listening to their nonsense back
and forth usually more educated nonsense than
I spew out, so that's always good. So we're doing
things a little different with this list than
we did with the other ones. The other ones, we
all just had our top 10, and we just went 10
through one, each bouncing back and forth as
we climbed towards the top of our list. What
we did at the half decade point for the comic
book films is we all submitted a list and then
had just one combined top 10. Partially because
you know at the half decade mark there hadn't
been that many Comic book films to choose from
so we didn't want to get into a top ten where
it's like, oh, that's my number seven Oh, that's
not my number four and we're just kind of talking
all over each other So we're gonna do a combined
list and then at the end as far as honorable
mentions go Each person will be able to talk
about anything that was on their individual list
that did not make The combined list if that makes
any sense to anybody You guys all submitted your
list to me. Nobody else knows what's on the combined
list except for me So it'll kind of be a reveal
as we go through here, but I wanted to ask you
guys a couple questions Before we start because
you each independently submitted a list so that
means that we had four top ten submitted so The
least amount of films that we could be talking
about in today's episode would obviously be ten
films if we all had the same ten films The most
we could be talking about simple math here would
be 40 if we had no not a single film that Managed
to duplicate on anybody's list. So we have to
be somewhere between 10 and 40 films I just want
to pull you guys a little bit. How many films
do you think we will be talking about DJ? Say
about half that I say about 20 20. What about
you Matt? I'll go lower. I'll do the under and
say 15 just because science fiction we had a
lot of crossover and I feel like this is even
a smaller pool So I'll say 15. Yeah, that's what
I thought too, because if you look back at our
half decade list, and that was just DJ Dan and
myself. So the range was a little bit different.
That was 10 to 30, basically. And we only talked
about 15 films on that one. We had a lot of crossover
on our half decade list. And I was anticipating
a whole lot of crossover on this one as well.
And there was not. We are going to be talking
about 23 different films on this list. I feel
like that's a lot. Showdown. Yeah, basically.
You didn't. You weren't close enough, though,
to win like the extra the both showdown. So I
don't think I'm going to. I think this trip to
Switzerland. I'm sorry. That was surprising to
me for sure. Twenty three films being covered.
And just to go off of a little bit more, there
was only two films that appear on all four of
our lists. Wow. That surprised me. So there's
two films that appeared on all four of our list.
And there's only two films that appeared on three
of the four less. So, yeah, there was seven films
that appeared on two people's list and 12 films
that were only on one list. I think it's my fault
here. I'm kind of a comic book purist, so maybe
I'm old. Maybe I'm looking for things in movies
that you guys are looking for things It is interesting
there the the films that did not appear on more
than two people's lists Some of them are very
surprising to me. So we'll have to get into that.
But before we start unveiling Actual movies that
appeared on the combined list. I wanted to get
your guys is just quick You know thoughts on
forming the list and kind of what you were looking
for Because it was a big decade for comic book
films obviously probably unarguably the biggest
decade ever when it comes to comic book films.
So DJ, how was the process of trying to whittle
this down to 10? I mean, I think we gave a list
out that was kind of a rough, rough list and
it was about 100 films. Obviously there could
have been some outside of that, but how was that
whittling process down for you? Well, you might
not remember when you first brought this up,
I gave you my list in five minutes. So because
I, my top five was very, very easy for me because
Till this day it probably has been the least
amount of movement between the top five for me
The bottom five was the one where I was like,
hmm, what should I put here? There's a little
bit more interesting way from six to ten then
from one to five one to five is has been my one
to five since Probably these those movies had
come out. So yeah, right I was very similar my
one to fours were locked the whole time my five
through eight were locks Just didn't know where
they would fall And it was my nine and 10 that
were kind of a little bit more of a toss up that
I was trying to debate between a few films as
far as what got in there. Matt, how was your
process and what do you look for in a comic book
film? I'm kind of a comic. I mean, DJ can attest
to this. I'm very spastic. And if you go back
to listen to any any of our podcasts from probably
what 2000 and what? 12 14 15 I was the first
one to be ringing the door bring in the dinner
bell like I'm tired of this genre I'm over it
Perfect to have me on the show But Funny enough
like I ended up kind of falling down like a rabbit
hole rewatching Pretty much. I mean out. Yeah,
everything that's on my list. I rewatched reaffirm
how much I like these as my top 10 and then even
some other ones as well. So kind of got a little
bit of a comic book kick watching all these films.
I don't know. I went by source material. I went
by what I like. And I didn't really go by the...
Some of this will probably fall in consensus,
but obviously not because we have 23 different
films we got to talk about. So I'm interested
to see what everybody else said, but I go by
my gut and what... what emotionally invests me
in these films. Thanks. I don't think anybody
can blame that strategy and that criteria. That's
a good one to go with. Dan, obviously the decade
was huge for the MCU with just the sheer volume
of films that came out during this decade. Did
that make it a lot harder for some of the maybe
non -superhero comic book films or some of the
comic book films that were outside of the MCU
to crack lists or how do you think the process
was? it was honestly harder for me to like determine
with when it came to MCC you like a lot of it
just jumbled together in the sense of like I
didn't want to have You know a lot of MCU movies.
I do like them a lot but it almost It made me
realize how how many of those are super close
to me when it comes to like quality wise like
You know my top five MCU films my bottom and
what my top ten is like always moving for the
most part I think I have my top two and everything
beneath that kind of Always is pretty varied
does that mean a little bit harder? But I think
what's different about this list is you know
is keys. It's just it's comic book movies and
superhero films It's they don't have it doesn't
have to be a superhero film to qualify just based
upon a comic book Which is a little harder to
judge against since you know science fiction
films tend to be going after similar things Where
you know i'll have a for example in my top 10
I had a movie that's much more a political comedy
compared to something that's like an action thriller
and That's a little harder to compare it to each
other So this is much probably the most personal
list for me when it came to all these Because
it's just really what really resonated with me
often a lot of these I have Personal experience
with the source material as well So if I really
like the source material and I feel like they
did it justice or in some cases even approved
upon it That kind of gave it extra points as
well. So But yeah, I think the MCU was is his
own and it's entity and In a way it I when I
was doing my list I just I didn't want to dominate
it from MCU films plus I think there are a lot
a lot of other movies also Deserved it too. So
yeah, right another interesting thing that we
have to deal with each individually as you know
Especially for DJ man now that you've guys been
on a couple episode and Dan myself This is what
our third one or whatever is how we treat films
that are, you know cross genres and Can be considered
for multiple lists? Do you include them on all
your list or do you keep them off? So that might
be something that we get into as well because
there's definitely some that qualify for Comic
book films that may have come up in both either
animated or science fiction as well So that'll
be interesting to kind of go through as well
like I said if don't feel bad if we don't get
to one of your individual films during the combined
list you will all get a chance to highlight those
and Brag about them or get them involved in the
discussion towards the end. So we're gonna start
off weird though because We're gonna start off
with our number 10 combined pick is actually
a three -way tie. And just to kind of highlight,
I guess the the lack of crossover, it will be
the only spot on the countdown that a movie only
had to appear on one person's list to get there.
So it's funny, though, because it's the same
spot on on three different lists. So this is
a fourth or let's see. Fourth, no. On my list
this would have been Sorry, I'm compiling a lot
of different lists here He's crunching the numbers
folks. I am crunching the numbers It helps if
I'm looking at the full decade and not the half
decade list. So that's that's one thing that
helps this was number three on Three of our different
lists. So it's it's three of our number three
picks if that makes sense So kind of going all
across the spectrum here. It's a three -way tie
for Avengers Infinity War Blue is the warmest
color and x -men days of future past so that
was ranked number three uh dj you had infinity
war ranked number three dan you had blue is the
warmest color ranked number three and i had x
-men days of future past ranked number three
so that is our weird tie at the tenth spot um
dj i'll give it to you first how do you break
that down i i think i prefer infinity war uh
over let's say uh in game or the regular avengers
movie or age of ultron because for one this that
movie starts and does not let up at all i think
there is maybe one slow moment and that moment
is uh character development for the film's protagonist
thanos which is crazy unto itself where the monumental
huge summer blockbuster makes the protagonist
not captain america or iron man but thanos It's
a heist movie seen through the eyes of a crook,
which is great. It's almost like an Ocean's Eleven
genre -bending superhero movie. Thanos being
that crook, a character that was built up for
eight years, maybe seven years, a long time,
and who totally delivers visually, visually,
narratively, performance -wise. I remember leaving
Iron Man. One with my stepdad who got me into
comic books to begin with and he said to me after
we left the first Iron Man He was like, hey Maybe
they could do Thanos because he read comic books
and he knew that Thanos Appeared in Iron Man
comic books the first time and I was I just remember
laughing I was like there's no effing way they'll
ever do Thanos. Thanos is too far out there and
I could not even conceive of them doing it and
they pulled him off so perfectly and the Infinity
Gauntlet saga I didn't think they'd ever be able
to pull off killing all these people. Seven million
memes later, Avengers Infinity War, I think,
for my money, is the most well -constructed of
the Avengers films in which literally every single
character from Wong to Okoye to Peter Dinklage
gets a moment. So I think Avengers Infinity War
is my favorite Avengers movie and that's why
it was my number three. Alright Dan I'm gonna
give you a chance to talk about blue is the warmest
color then I'll talk about days the future past
and then we'll let Matt kind of Summarize it
at the end since he is obviously the odd man
out here before I like to talk about blue is
the warmest color I couldn't rank blue is the
warmest color because I didn't get a chance to
watch it yet So it is a while for me. Otherwise,
it might have cracked my list, but I just haven't
seen it So Dan what makes blue is the warmest
color? Something that should be this high Think
it's I think it's all streaming on Hulu or no
Netflix. It has been for a while I don't know
if that's one that I can show or I can watch
with Amanda. No, no That's super rated are super
Yeah, I would say like, you know if there was
one complaint about blue the war was coming colors
that you could argue It just get pretty gratuitous
at times almost like it's when it comes to the
the sex scenes and things without any shirt but
I think what I think what drives it what makes
it work even despite that or the performances
of you know, the two lead actresses. They're
just phenomenal I wasn't really familiar with
the the manga it's based upon or if it's qualified
as manga or what have you I've read a little
bit of it since then um, but it's just uh Really
well constructed well done. Um, beautifully told
coming of age film within within this romance
that just feels very authentic and Despite what
I said about the sex scenes, it is beautifully
shot as well. I always feel like with sometimes
with horror films, it's hard to really pick up
on performances because of the language barrier.
You can't always see them at the same light as
you would a film that you can understand the
language of. But I think even the strength of
the performance are there because of a lot of
the quiet moments as well. Obviously not the
first thing that people think about when they
think about comic book movies. But I think that's
what it why I also wanted to highlight it as
well is because it just shows the variety of
stories that are told Through comic books that
they're not always superhero films. They can
be these smaller life stories as well And this
to me was one of the best represent representations
of it of the genre And the film genre as well.
So nice Interesting. I think that one came up
as honorable mention last time I don't think
everybody had seen it at that point either obviously
I still haven't but when we did the half decade
list, obviously Infinity War had not been released
yet X -Men Days of Future Past which was my number
three which was the other one that was tied in
this group was obviously out at the half decade
part And DJ and Dan you both had it ranked number
five on your half decade list. I had it ranked
number four And it came up number four on the
combined list. I actually just this last Couple
days or last week rewatched both. Well, we rewatched
about five comic book movies, but two of them
were X -Men First Class and X -Men Days of Future
Past just because it had been a while. And I
wanted to kind of rewatch that one and see if
it was still as high on my list as I had it at
that point. And it definitely is like I really
enjoy Days of Future Past. Like that one is just
as good now to me as it was when I saw it in
the theaters. I love the dynamics. I love the
mixing of the two different casts together and
kind of what they're doing there and I think
Some of these films and there's gonna be another
one that we might talk about later at some point
but the X -Men films as well as some of the other
comic book films that kind of predated the Not
necessarily the whole MCU movement, but kind
of like the peak of the MCU movement I'm wondering
if some of those have gotten not necessarily
forgotten about but Buried in a way with all
the different comic book films that have come
out since then because I don't know I would definitely
still sing the praises of days of future past
I want to I saw what Dan and DJ one of you either
watched it recently or one of you was tweeting
about it recently I was tweeting about both of
them. Yeah I see more and more about first first
class, but days of future past. I think I said
that has my favorite as a favorite but most logical
explanation of time travel That I've seen in
a movie over Terminator A little bit over back
to the future because it's kind of back to the
future rules, but because they're not transporting
matter the transporting consciousness Makes more
logical sense to me because you can't have two
Marty McFly that always bothers me, but I I Love
that movie Except for maybe a little bits bits
near the end, but everything else about it is
it's fantastic Dan did you just rewatch it? Yeah,
I haven't finished rewatching it but It came
on Disney Plus, you know, they're slowly Disney
silly adding the X -Men films on It's weird which
ones they have the X -Men apocalypse in first
class and like that's it which is kind of weird
Uh, but yeah, I think that's kind of what hurts
the x -men films is that they're they are rather
inconsistent you tend to have They're almost
like the star trek ones where you have a great
one and a bad one a great one and a bad one Although
with first class and days of future past, I think
you have the two strongest back to back But I
do I do really enjoy that as well I think to
me what i've always enjoyed over with the x -men
films even over the mcu or the character dynamics
I find much more dynamic and uh, there's more
depth there compared to the mcu because of obviously
what they're representing um you know between
i can just see michael fassbender and james mcdavoy
go back and forth all day long like one of my
favorite scenes in that entire movie is just
uh michael fassbender saying names on an airplane
but it just worked Yeah, what he's making them
he's yelling out all the dead mutants. Yeah Yeah,
it's just and it's tense and it's just like just
fasteners. It's so great as Magneto My only complaint
really about the first class is that they didn't
bring back the Magneto theme from first class,
which was fantastic The Andrew Jackman score
Frankenstein. Yeah. Yeah. Oh good It that was
that I really hope I don't know why they stopped
using it, but they it was perfect They kind of
kept kept the gum, but they didn't but Yeah,
I can do the score for a feature pass. I can't
even remember. I think it's same. I think it's
same. But it's I don't know off the top of my
head, to be honest with you. But it's fun to
see Fassbender and Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman
and, you know, some of these actors all in the
same, you know, superhero film basically is something
that you would not necessarily put, you know,
right down on paper is something that you would
think would work, but it works really well. This
is one digression from the comic book that I
think works. Well because uh and i know why they
did it because they wanted to have more screen
time for you jack because i own the book it's
shadow cat or ellen page's character that goes
in the past and they did it where it's jackman
it goes in the past but i think it works very
very well even though this is a a clear studio
decision we got to put jackman in this we can't
just have ellen page well even with all the x
-men movies before that it was always the wolverine
show in so many ways it didn't really matter
about the x -men it was like Okay, what's wolverine's
past from the very first x -men movie all the
way pretty much until you know apocalypse in
a lot of ways It was like who is wolverine. What
does he do? We have to market him because everybody
loves wolverine. Everybody else is like shadow
cat So mad three very different films Here with
infinity war blues and warmest color and days
of future past thoughts on any of them Or would
you give the edge to one over the other? I mean
You sometimes forget, I mean, Dan brings up a
good point where blue is the warmest color. You
forget that it was a manga or a graphic novel
or whatever it might've been before it became
a film. But as a film, it's fantastic. You know,
and this is where we're going to kind of, I guess
maybe split hairs along the way about what's
a comic book movie versus a drama versus a coming
of age story and stuff like that. So opening
your, you know, I guess, Dan firing the first
shots like, this is going to be the classy list,
not like you other... And then Infinity War,
I mean, that was in my revision list, that was
in the top 20, same thing as Days of Future Past.
I feel like with Days of Future Past, Apocalypse
kind of... Tarnished I don't want to say tarnished
it but it kind of did in some ways where you
forget how good either first -class was or days
of future past was because of how Not good Apocalypse
was in a lot of ways and maybe maybe it's also
the The director I'm blanking on his name right
now Brian Singer thing type thing where you're
like, oh well cancel that a little bit And then
infinity war. Yeah It's in any in any other version
of a list, it would have been on my list. But
again, I'm judging my list on other things. And
of course, I'm the one weirdo who did not include
that on my list at all or anything like that.
So I mean, I respect them all. They're all they're
all fine. They're all fine films and everything
is just came down to. Taste in my weirdness a
lot of ways. Hey, we all have that so alright.
Let's move on to our number I do want to mention
so the person we brought it up John Altman did
the music for that's why yeah, he works with
singer all the time Gotcha, so we don't get any
any tweets at us that we didn't know what our
stuff Dan came in with the save there. All right,
so for our number nine, this is kind of going
into another group of films that I feel like
also has been buried by the MCU. For number nine,
we're gonna go to Dark Knight Rises. It was on
Matthew and my list, not on DJ's or Dan's list.
That was one that, I guess it depends on which
one you like in that trilogy. But for me, the
reason why I decided to put it on my top 10 is,
you know, pre mcu blow up etc etc. I feel like
really this trilogy of batman films somewhat
changed the game um in a major way like I feel
like and i'm sure there's exceptions and there's
ones that you know you could point out that did
it first or whatever but my opinion of comic
book films and specifically of superhero films
within that kind of subgenre of comic book films
you know throughout the 80s 90s etc was that
it was always Really cheesy, you know what I
mean? It was always not that that's always a
bad thing, but it was it was really More fun
more kidlike and again, these aren't bad things.
We're talking about, you know a type of comic
book Which that's kind of what they are. They
should be comic bookie. They should be for kids
But it was not until you know, this Dark Knight
trilogy came out that I was kind of seeing comic
book films as Something else they could do something
else that they can achieve and be successful
with With this more serious More dramatic style
where it's not as out of this world, you know
The the effects are a little bit more realistic
looking the the costumes and the characters are
a little more realistic looking Kind of the antithesis
to what Batman and Robin from back in the day
or something like that. So I just feel like they
deserve to be talked about still in a highway
I feel like it's almost like the inception of
what we had with the sci -fi list where it's
something that Really was groundbreaking at the
time and and was talked about a lot when the
movie came out But now that we've gone through
the whole decade, we've had so many other movies
We've had so many other years and I just feel
like they're somewhat buried somewhat underappreciated
But for me Dark Knight Rises still deserves to
be talked about so I had it all the way up at
my number four Matt, you had it at your number
eight. What made you have Dark Knight kind of
crack your top ten? This is the classic, you
know, you can stumble. I mean, we go back to
the I guess the revision, revisionist history
of the of the new X -Men films for Fox with the
first class trilogy, the third film. I mean,
other people, I'm sure they love Apocalypse.
I'm not in that camp. There are a few things
that might be OK. But overall, it's like this
is a mess and I don't want to watch this anymore.
But After being emotionally invested after after
the first Batman after Batman begins you're like
this is cool I like where they're going with
this and then you had kind of I mean in a lot
of ways you could say Dark Knight The Dark Knight
kind of changed the game. It legitimized Comic
book movies for a lot of people. Wow, this is
high art. It's like you guys were just shitting
all over Batman and Robin Six years ago now,
it's high art, of course, but I digress about
that but then Dark Knight Rises, it made me weep
in a theater, which I don't, well, I do often.
But the way Nolan kind of just made the story,
and as much as people like the poke holes in
this movie now, it's like, this doesn't make
sense. That doesn't make sense. Like, it's a
comic book movie, people. This isn't brain surgery
or anything. Plus, why can't we just, I mean,
and this is a newer kind of like symptom of just
like, it's the culture now where people are like,
Automatically this is crap. You know, it's probably
a lot of the Joker bros out there and stuff like
that, but whatever But in a lot not you're gonna
get a lot of hate mail in this This is gonna
be I'm going in all these people now but just
the way he weaved that story where at the end
of the day it came down to You know in spoiler
alert and everything like that Bruce Wayne losing
his whole world but then one person saying, it's
gonna be okay. And I'm getting goosebumps just
thinking about that scene right now a lot of
ways because that is the point of the entire
thing that there are good people in the world.
No matter how horrific an event you have, you
had that one good guy who was like, I'm not gonna
be a bad guy or anything like that. And I'm helping
this kid because he's going through the worst
time of his life. And it's amazing. Another interesting
thing this is another set of the movies that
I just rewatched recently I rewatched all three
of the Batman Begins Dark Knight Dark Knight
Rises just to again refresh and make sure I still
felt that way about them but it's interesting
going back ten years and watching this film and
then after all these other films have come out
that have had some of the actors that appeared
in this because we got you know Christian Bale
obviously Gary Oldman's a veteran but you have
Tom Hardy you know Maybe not before people knew
him but he obviously even made more of a name
for himself over the decade Marion Cotillard
Joseph Gordon Levitt You have Ben Mendelsohn
in here, you know temple Cillian Murphy Aaron
Eckhart, etc I mean it is a crazy cast and Hathaway
Morgan Freeman obviously to to Liam Neeson I
mean I could keep going there's just a ton of
people in here that it's interesting to see ten
years later that they were all in this film together,
but um dan or dj any thoughts on Is it if it
was dark night would it have made it or is dark
night rises a step down? Or how do you feel about
those? I think it was dark night dark night would
probably be my number one of this decade. Um,
I I like dark night rises a lot. Uh, I do think
there are I don't think it's nearly the level
of dark night, which is hard. It's just impossible
to really do I think uh, but I I do think there
are a lot of issues with it, um narratively that
To me I can overlook but to me when i'm breaking
the best films I couldn't put it on this list
because of that uh, but there are like a lot
of standout moments to that movie. I love I love
like the um the moment near the end of the film
where you have all the police officers just like
doing this like lord of the rings ass charge
on the onto all the bench forces and for bruce
wayne yeah, it's probably like it's which I think
weird is that it's You know no one's films were
all about like realism, but there is a lot of
comic bookness in that movie compared to What
came before even like the giant bat symbol that
gets turned on fire, which I think is a great
moment But it's it's kind of funny. It's like
you spent all that time getting that set up.
But uh, but I I those Logic things. I kind of
feel like people make a big deal about that aren't
necessarily That big of a deal. Um, it's also
kind of funny because it's like, you know It's
not realistic that people would just let all
these people die and not do anything about it
But now we know that's not the case anymore.
Apparently I was ahead of the curve. Art has
become reality, so yeah. But yeah, I do really
like it. It's I I. But like I said, just because
I'm looking at the best of the best if. Some
of those things you know heard, you know, love
Zimmer score is fantastic. The opening sequence
again to that was really strong to the with the
plane, the practical effects that were done.
But and I know people make a big deal about Tom
Hardy's voice. I've never had an issue understand.
I like it Yeah, but I I do like I do like being
as a as a character and that's where it kind
of leaves it drops off for me is that they Uns
yeah, you guys had me on wrestling podcast before
who do I love? I love the bad guys. Yeah, maybe
unceremoniously just get rid of him and you don't
even No, did he die? That's what kind of knocks
it down. Some is that even Talia it's it's it's
so like. Pairing it to another movie on any of
the other movies on my list how they deal with
the villain if this wouldn't had the week even
the how they deal with the Joker was in the Dark
Knight or a race in the first one was more Ceremonious
than the way they got rid of who would Bane was
such amazing character running this movie he's
the engine of this movie and That's it by and
we're not even gonna mention him for the rest
of the time as a that's what kind of knocked
it down for me Makes sense makes sense. All right.
Well, let's move into one that was a little bit
more Universal here This was one of the two films
that was on three of our list even though it
comes in down here at the number eight spot It
was let's see number ten on DJ's list It was
number six on my list and number seven on Matthew's
list DJ will let you start with this one. We're
talking about Guardians of the Galaxy Nobody
thought it would work most of all I remember
when they announced this film at Comic Con I
was pissed off. Like, I was like, I think I was
there. I was like, Kevin Feige, you son of a
bitch. That's what you're doing next. Boy, did
I, they proved me wrong setting up the galactic
universe. of the MCU is probably the most important
thing James Gunn did with this movie because
every skeleton of this movie is what we live
off of now with Thor, Ragnarok, with Guardians
2, with Infinity War, with Endgame. It's all
coming from this. Probably Eternals, probably
Doctor Strange, all comes from Guardians of the
Galaxy. And the fact that James Gunn was Loud
to make these characters so distinct and lovable
and flawed and now their household names a frickin
tree and a talking raccoon i say all the time
the fact that you can't get superman to work
but you can have a raccoon with a machine gun
and a tree work baffles my mind but yeah the
fact that this is kind of only a bread crumb
of Thanos one of the few bread crumbs but I was
so giddy when I saw him. It was so, I think,
perfect of a launching point. Like if anybody
else would do Guardians, I don't think it would
work. And this is why when I left, I was very
worried because I don't see, even though Russo's
did very well with these characters, I don't
trust a lot of people to take, understand how
to navigate the The drama the humor and the action
of the guardians of the galaxy as much as james
gun, which he pulled through which nobody Anybody
tell you. Oh, I knew it was gonna be a hit. They're
lying in your face. Nobody knew this was gonna
be here. Nobody That existed before this release
and when news was out and you can hear everybody
including probably myself sound like idiots About
what this was gonna be and what was interesting
to me is, you know mcu is a lot of things especially,
you know, if you're doing I can compare and contrast
mcu to dc And one thing MCU is known for is being
a little bit more light a little bit more humorous
and like Guardians of the Galaxy is like the
exclamation point on that aspect of the MCU And
but like you said, also being able to balance
it with the story and the action, et cetera.
So, yeah, it was I believe it came out within
like a year. This is like a January, February
release or something like early August. Oh, this
is August. Yeah, I remember. OK. But it came
out of nowhere when it did drop in and nobody
was expecting it to just be not just successful
within like geek circles like ours, but just
a moneymaker as well. Like nobody was anticipating
it to be the blockbuster that it was. So. Matt
this one was your number seven. So obviously
you're somewhat in agreement with everything
we said Yeah, pretty much. I mean I I mean and
I'll Out there. I mean I I knew of the Guardians
of the Galaxy when they announced it I mean,
I probably said like that's cool. They got like
weird characters and I mean I was already a big
James Gunn fan I mean, I'd like James Gunn going
all the way back to trauma days and slither and
because all his weird just kind of oddball You
know sensibility appeal to me. I'm like, oh wow,
you could make this But it's like, how is, how
are they going to let James Gunn, a guy who was
like the trauma version of like John Waters and
stuff like that, kind of get away with like,
how was he getting into the MCU? And of course
they tried to drive him out and everything. That's,
that's a whole different story altogether. But
I mean, it's, he works so much stuff into, in
giving every character. their time to shine and
their own little personality so you can like
your own characters. Oh, I'm a Drax guy. Well,
I'm a storyboard guy. I'm a Gamora girl or something
like that. Something like that was really cool
and exciting. Plus, he was able to weave his
own brand of humor and the fact that he could
include like... a cum joke into a movie without
people really knowing? It's true. It's still
interesting to me. Jackson Pollock? You know,
the Jackson Pollock. It's like, not a lot of
people know. It's like, OK, we're all adults
here. We know what it is. But, you know, the
fact that he said that at the theater, I'm like,
did he just, like, make a joke about, like, he's
having sex all over his ship? That's freaking
awesome. I love that. You know, the other thing
that. I talked about the comedy and the other
thing that obviously this movie did very well
that hit with a lot of people was the music and
the soundtrack obviously there's a main part
of it as well that kind of helped it kind of
Differentiate itself from what we had seen prior
in the comic book world and it just was a lot
of fun Dan I know you also had this in your extended
list. I think it was the number 15 So obviously
you're somewhat in agreement here of the the
merits of Guardians of the Galaxy Oh, yeah, definitely.
I I love galaxy gardens a galaxy. I even really
love gala gardening to the galaxy, too I think
ego is one of the best MC villains ever created
and people think it's a big stamp down I've seen
that a lot, but I think it's Nearly as strong
as the first film I'd maybe that the comedy isn't
as sharp but I was a huge fan of the Dan Amnett
and Landing run in Guardians of Galaxy, which
this kind of comes out of because there's different
versions of Guardians and Galaxy that are a lot
different characters, but even like, you know,
being a gun fan and seeing him utilize his style,
bringing people like Mickey, not Mickey Bork,
but, oh my goodness. The other Rourke, what's
his name? Rourke? Michael Rourke. Michael Rourke,
yeah, there you go. Michael Rourke. I thought
he's, you know, he was a lot of fun. One of the
best weapons in any MCU film. That was a great
scene. I think, you know, Maybe the weakest part
of it would be Ronan, but ultimately that's really
not what the movie is about It's about the guardians
themselves and who and I remember, you know being
kind of scared about being Batista Being in being
in this film, but he was you know, it was a breakout
role for him I mean tracks into a much more fun
character a better character I would argue then
he really is often in the comics. So yeah, that
was some expert directing too as well to make
But he's been to this the star that and he has
good time and i'm not trying to take anything
away but it was good directing and writing to
know what to do with him as well that you brought
up the last and some of the and michael rickard
what not is still to this day mary poppins y
'all is my maybe the loudest i've ever laughed
in a movie theater i lost my ever loving mind
on that moment and i was not expecting it. I'm
not I'm not the type of person that's gonna like
spit my drink out or popcorn out or whatever
But I I think I missed like the following ten
minutes after that Struck a chord with me. So
I will always appreciate it for that So Guardians
of Galaxy comes in at our number eight. Let's
move on to our number seven, which is also the
first time We're gonna see someone's number one
fall Which I'm surprised this didn't get a few
more votes I guess but the only people that had
it on their list was DJ and myself And that is
into the staying in the MCU with Captain America
Civil War Captain America Civil War out of the
different Captain America's that we could do
obviously there's first Avenger and Winter Soldier
etc, but we see Captain America Civil War here
at number 7 DJ. This was your number one This
was my number 10 and just missed probably being
on the other list I think this is a we're gonna
get into this again probably later on here as
well, but With some of these films that have
like multiple installments like you're gonna
have with Captain America or you know with Avengers
or different things like that. I'm wondering
if it's a Comes becomes a hard thing where you're
trying to pick one out of the group or where
you're trying to rank those and maybe some fall
because you Slightly like another film better
dan you just had this outside you had this at
number 11 Um, so dj why civil war number one
on your list? There is no I mean this this question
keeps I was on another show and they brought
it they asked me this question and Like it's
almost like a reflex act. I'm like Civil War
Civil War not even a thought when you brought
this question up the first one at Civil War not
even a question There is no comic book film that
not only gave me the best interpretation of my
favorite superhero spider -man gave me my first
pretty damn fantastic film introduction of Black
Panther and gave me the such a well -executed
gravitas of a third act than Captain America
Civil War. When I first watched it, the kid in
me really focused on that second act finale airport
battle because it's comics come to life essentially.
But as time has gone on since I've seen it, the
adults in me has come to appreciate that final
act of the film that it is. the purest MCU tragedy
of all of the MCU films. There is no MCU film
that has a more tragic moment and I am including
Infinity War than this movie. It's the little
things that most people miss or construe as just
action. Like, for example, the section in which
Iron Man has Bucky in a sleeper hold after he's
been revealed, spoiler alert for Captain America
Civil War, that Bucky killed Iron Man's parents
and Iron Man asked Bucky, Do you even remember
them referring to his parents? And Bucky responds,
I remember all of them. That bit is great because
Iron Man can't see Bucky's face. So when Bucky
says that, he thinks Bucky's bragging, but we
see Bucky's face and we know he's not. It haunts
him, and it just pisses off Iron Man more to
fight him and to kill him. And it's just these
little, little moments like that where Infinity
War was tragic because he lost all these heroes,
but it was this character that came out of nowhere.
These are two best friends breaking up, essentially,
that we've watched become friends, grow tight,
and realize that this fundamental thing is Reason
for them not to be together anymore. It has nothing
to do with the accords It's this and cap can't
turn one way and Iron Man can't turn the other
way everyone in this final act is perfect I think
the film glossed over people this gloss over.
Oh, this is the one with the airport fight That's
what everybody says and they don't really think
about that final act of the movie But it really
is the tragedy of these guys friendship come
to an understandable reason Understandable reasons
of why they wouldn't be people are you team cap
or you team Iron Man? It has all that stuff in
it it's kind of like their version of Revenge
of the Sith if it was done correctly or been
her, if you will, you know, with these two friends
that you want them to be friends, but this thing
gets in the middle of it. And I heard one person
say about Civil War that it's so good, it's suspicious.
And I highly agree with that sentiment. Civil
War will always, until, I mean, if any war in
another movie came very close, It's just that
that scene where my father gave you that shield
stuff like that and that got me that that emotional
Rage of a friendship breaking up is something
you don't get out of any other superhero movie
Like that because you know these you you know
Iron Man, you know, right? We've seen this guy
for 12 years. We know what Captain America is
it over a decade? The watch these two fall apart
is really really really good I mean bad, but
good to watch another interesting thing that
it accomplishes on that same line as on such
a large stage in a grand stage, you know, talking
about superheroes and things like that. But taking
something that can be so relatable to everybody
as far as, you know, we all had, you know, that
friend that you're friends with, you know, in
whatever grade school or middle school. And then
as you grow, you know, there's going to be that
that issue or that thing that that draws you
apart, whether it's a. you know philosophical
thing or whether it's just uh i'm interested
in that and you're now interested in and something
completely different and we're gonna go our different
paths like we can all relate to that on so many
various levels um that i think it was very clever
the way they did that and it's also something
that we hadn't seen much in comic book films
or superhero films up to this point which is
basically almost throw the villain out the window
and now turn your two heroes and make that conflict
between them the central focus and that is almost
the antagonist in a way he's pre Thanos he breaks
entire MCU with a videotape right that's worse
than a gauntlet he didn't have to do any physical
violence at all he just had to tell him the truth
imagine you're Tony Stark this is why I'm team
Iron Man and your father treated you like shit
for your entire life and idolizes this man who's
been hiding his killer that's that whole moment
where he goes don't bullshit me cap tell me that
moment where I think this is the best you're
going to see Robert Downey Jr. act and other
than maybe in endgame. It's that moment of re
because you never really see Iron Man or Tony
Stark angry. This is the only time and it's justified.
That's what makes it sad. It's like, oh, it's
not just a miscommunication. All the cards are
on the table. Captain America doesn't lie except
for this one time. And that's the time that Tony
Stark cannot believe you're lying about protecting
the guy that idolized you that he killed that
that whole thing that whole third act to me it
puts it always number one Matt I'm assuming that
this one just messed your list and funny enough
it was Definitely on the lot outside looking
and I think it was maybe in like maybe 21. They
didn't make and And maybe that's just me not
looking at it correctly. I mean, this is why
you bring both of us on. You have the high thinking
mammalian brain of DJ. And you have the lower
thinking reptilian brain of Matt. So this is
why you have both of us on, because we're so
dynamically different. The dynamic duo. The non
-dynamic duo. But this is one of the movies that
I did rewatch. But I rewatched all the cat movies.
uh pretty much everything kind of like from I
think Winter Soldier on we just Nicole and I
we just kind of marathon through and I remember
watching Civil War was like wow this this is
I mean it's it's a it's a fantastic movie and
to DJ's point the third act is what should hit
at home and but the first two acts while they're
they're fine they're good the fighting is okay
I mean I like the fact that they brought crossbones
back that was like kind of geeking out like yeah
crossbones but they kill them off of course but
oh wow. Um, but the third act which I should
be focusing on, you know, it is The it's a culmination
of let's say from the 1940s all the way up until
this movie the starks and rogers have been Intimately
connected from world war two all up until this
civil war And I guess when dj talks about what
he what he was just kind of expounding on a lot
of ways It makes sense. I mean, of course i'm
like, oh shit. I I must be a complete moron because
I don't understand comic book movies at all.
But it is like seeing the ultimate breakup of
a family relationship that's been built for 75
years or something like that. And I guess you
lose sight of that. And maybe potentially in
me making this list, I lost sight of that because
you have so many bombastic things. You have Ant
-Man becoming Giant Man. You have Black Panther,
which everybody was like losing their using the
shit over like, oh my god, Black Panther's finally
here. And then you kind of forget it's like,
oh yeah, Black Panther, his dad got killed too,
by the way, just in case anybody's wondering,
this is what kind of puts him into motion as
well too, just in case you're wondering. But
yeah, it's like the Captain America Iron Man
breakup movie that of course is, you know, fixed
after, you know, a bigger. Extra dimensional
extra galactic force comes into play But I don't
know why I kind of had this it could have been
something where I was like This isn't my favorite
Captain America movie or something like that.
I mean, that's why I kind of listen for me Yeah,
it was it was one of those I was fighting for
that tenth spot for me There was about four films
that were fighting 12 through 9 and this one
slotted in at number 10 Dan I know you're a huge
Captain America fan. So I'm sure you have no
problem with it get in some love here No, not
what none whatsoever this and This is probably
my number two uh marvel movie. It's in it's very
close to number one. Um, so it's i think it's
uh, I think if anything my number one's more
based upon enjoying the source material a bit
more like I think This is far better than the
comic books of a war especially in alias. It's
where it's where Yeah, it comes from it comes
from a similar place but the outcome and the
everything behind it is much more impactful and
much more meaningful than Uh where and the ending
too is great. Um As cj pointed out Uh, but yeah,
it's it's probably and it was technically not
an adventure film though. It kind of feels like
an adventure film Um, yeah, although and I think
that is what one of the benefits of a two is
that even though it is You have all these characters
event. It's still at the core of it. Uh Captain
america story even like the funeral sequence,
uh, how they kind of took that and actually took
uh repurposed something that was said to Captain
America and ever he said and utilized that within
Within the movie itself. I thought was kind of
a clever way of handling it. So Yeah, all right
about think about how a studio Probably 10 years
ago would never have this movie structured that
way. There is no way 10 years ago They have the
airport scene not be the finale. They didn't
do it for this one. That's what always another
thing that always makes me go Wow, they had carte
blanche to make this more intimate fight be the
final, not the big Ant -Man, Black Panther, Black
Widow fight to be the big thing. They gave their
audience the benefit of that and said, like,
I think our audience is a little bit smarter
than this. Also brought, you know, Spider -Man
to the MCU. So, yep. Oh, yeah, that guy. Absolutely.
All right. So let's go from one that was on DJ
and my list to one that was on Dan and Matt's
list at our number six. And that would be none
other than Scott Pilgrim versus the world Dan
you had this at number seven Matt You had a little
higher all the way up at number three. So I'll
let you start first Why Scott Pilgrim worthy
of being in the discussion? It's I mean, I guess
it's it kind of fall I don't want to say falls
into like that whole like blues warmest color
thing, but Indie comic Darling, you know people
who know about Scott Pilgrim know about Scott
Pilgrim. It's cute. It's quirky. It's funny.
It's weird but this was like the thing that Edgar
Wright was You know, he was he was already doing
his, you know, shot on the dead, you know, hot
fuzz, all that stuff that people kind of knew
from the from the what do you call that the whatever
trilogy, the ice cream trilogy or whatever it
is or not. Oh, thank you. The Coronado trilogy.
But then he takes the time to just make this
quirky little comic book movie that probably
would never have gotten made. Probably if like,
I don't know if hot fuzz or if like shot of the
dead weren't hits. And then suddenly Edgar Wright
is like the talk of the town is like, hey, what
do you want to do is like Oh Mike I want to do
a movie about this Canadian these Canadian folks,
you know, that's a horrible girl You're here
Edgar Wright is on the podcast. He's on the podcast.
You know some amazing impersonation surprise
guest Limited Edgar, right? but it's just such
a quirky and I know a lot of people again, this
is become one of those movie that's like a problematic
movie and it's I guess in this day and age where
it's like Scott Pilgrim is kind of a creep and
kind of a scumbag and horrible person and stuff
like that and a lot of the characters are kind
of insufferable and things like that, but just
bringing a comic book to life in injecting everything
I kind of like about pop culture and video games
and manga and anime and Everything about that
is like so instructured. So well, it's done so
it's done There's so many inside jokes. There's
so many things you can kind of kind of take in
and out of it Mary Elizabeth Wine said, I think
she's a freaking angel in this movie. I love
her so much, even though she's just, she's kind
of like the flighty girl that people are going
after. But, you know, it's a heartwarming story
about just a bunch of freaks and weirdos. And
it has Captain America in it, which is really
cool. And Superman. It's got Superman in too,
I forget about that. Captain Marvel's in there.
Captain Marvel, it's got every, well one day
we're just gonna talk about like, every movie
has had every - Has every superhero in it. Ever
in the history of that. But I don't know, just
something about it, it's just choreographed so
well and it's endearing, it's charming, it's
- Don't know I guess it brings it's something
I watch at least once or twice a year and it's
something that I can watch with My wife and we
both enjoyed a lot So it has kind of a soft spot
For me where the rewatch ability is very high
and I can always get something a little bit different
out of it every time I watch it Excellent interesting
to look at the half decade list Scott Pilgrim
was on the combined list number six That is obviously
where it was here as well, so it was number six
at both the half decade and at the entire decade
list of Dan. Obviously it made your list as well
at number seven, so what are your thoughts on
Scott Pilgrim? Scott Pilgrim's movie I think
I've enjoyed much more the more I've watched
it over and over again, especially you can really
see how well Edgar Wright's direction is when
it comes to utilizing a lot of the special effects
because this is a movie that is overwhelmed with
special effects. However, there's a lot of practical
elements to it, too, that make those special
effects work and make them integrated so they
feel like they're part of the world, which is
key for that movie to work. It's like a live
action video game in a way. It's super clever
and it's just really bombastic in that way. There's
so much energy throughout the entire film. I
don't think anyone else could have done it quite
like how it was made without it being Edgar Wright
and Michael Sarah, who I know gets a lot of complaints
for him playing the same character over and over
again. I do think he was great casting. He does
fit that part well and actually can pull the
action sequences and with Jason Schwartz, which
should be really awkward actually works. And
it's just it's a feast for the eyes just as you
look at it, like all the little things that are
there, all the visual gags, all the visual jokes,
all the Artistry that's that's at play and then
there's just a lot of great gasp watches was
mentioned like Chris Evans to spot Brandon Routh
it just it's really funny and It's kind of a
crazy movie that I'm surprised was ever made
Honestly compare, you know considering it's a
shame that it it was a huge bomb and didn't wasn't
successful whatsoever Because I think if it was
maybe we could have gotten more films that were
you know took took risks like that But unfortunately
just wasn't successful. So We really it was kind
of it's one of a kind because of it All right.
So that is a good spot for us to take a quick
break at the halfway mark here We're gonna give
a couple ads out here I actually remember to
put them in this time and then when we come back

spot dot com I'm sure your insurance company
will cover that no they won't no they probably
won't Alright, thanks for sticking with us. You've
already heard our ten through six which included
two extra films So we had Avengers Infinity War
X -Men days of future past blue is the warmest
color Dark Knight Rises Guardians of the Galaxy
Captain America Civil War and Scott Pilgrim versus
the world So it's time for our top five on our
combined list here starting off with the number
five going back into the MCU This film only appeared
on two lists, which this one might shock have
shocked me. This one and the next one are the
ones that shocked me the most that they only
appeared on two lists. So just on Matthew and
myself, we both had it at the same spot, actually.
And that would be Black Panther. It comes in
at number five. We both had it at number five.
So, Matt, I'll let you start. Why Black Panther
amongst all of the MCU films deserve in a spot
here? Again, I'm sure DJ can speak better this.
A decade ago, would you have ever have imagined
You know, in Black Panther, I mean, insert, I
mean, full disclosure, I mean, I never read Black
Panther. I mean, I read the I read the comic
book characters that I knew or maybe appealed
to me or maybe look like me in a lot of ways.
But there were a lot of people who read the crap
out of Black Panther, probably because he was
what an empty what alone African -American superhero
for a lot of people. And I don't, I hate to say
it made him a novelty, but I mean, unfortunately,
it probably did for a long time. But with good
writing, you know, good stories that kind of
led up to this, you know, coming out party in
Civil War. And then you got a full out Black
Panther movie that, I mean, I want to say it,
I won't say it changed the world, but it definitely
changed the direction of how we see, you know,
just not even it's even more about the it's not
even about the character it's more about the
cult culture you know seeing a different world
that people aren't used to and of course i mean
this was i don't want to say it was polarizing
but i mean ultimately you got the unfortunate
people that were like i can't believe this this
movie's too black for me because i heard i heard
that a lot i'm like holy shit i can't believe
i'm hearing something like this now i mean i'm
not surprised in the day and age we live in right
now but this was just create it was Cole it was
embracing a culture that people knew so little
about and showing the love and showing that yes,
this is a very important part of our world culture
and even from the beginning of the movie, it's
like Civilization started here. So it's like
a history lesson and in a lot of ways and You
know, it just turned out to be to be fantastic.
I would just say this is Black Panther was a
cultural comic book touchstone for a lot of people.
Again, directed by a director who a lot of people,
I mean, I don't want to compare it to James Gunn
or anything like that, but Ryan Coogler working
on stuff like Fruitville Station and then Creed.
And then it's like, we're trusting you to basically
unite a culture with one singular. The pressure.
Yeah. Here's the pressure. It's like, here it
is. You're going to do this. Here's Black Panther.
You're going to direct the first African -American
comic book superhero movie. Don't mess up. You're
fine. You know, it's like, don't worry. It's
not static shock or anything like that. You're
doing Black Panther. So it was something that
I think a lot of people would have never seen
in their life. And we got it. It was great. DJ
Thoughts? Again, you guys have me on the Wrestling
Podcast. Who do I love? I love I love the villains
like the heel like the heels and this Killmonger
until Thanos came around I think was up there
as one of the greatest heels I'm a movie history
because but is he a heel if that's the great
thing about him he has a great thing about he's
a heel because of his methods not because of
his madness he believes what he believes in is
correct you guys have let us die for centuries
You guys should help us. You know what? I'm going
to do it myself. I'm going to do it in this mean
way." But he was right. That's why Black Panther
implements his plan differently at the end. But
the best thing about it is he beats Black Panther
straight up. There is no cheating. There's no
nothing. Beats Black Panther straight up. Anyway,
on top of the cool comic book nerdy stuff, the
cultural phenomenon that Matt's talking about
is correct. And I remember when I first saw Creed,
Nobody was gonna I bookmarked this tweet. I was
like I want him to direct Black Panther I remember
saying I want Ryan Coogler to direct Black Panther
because I think one in terms of spectacle and
taking a property that's beloved and it's important
and not messing it up He took the pressure you're
talking about for Black Panther. He had to reboot
Rocky Rocky's pretty pretty big cultural phenomenon.
He did pretty good with that. So In the way he
did with Black Panther Black Panther is almost
not even a movie. It's almost like I just saying
it's it's It's more than that. It's a writing.
It's important and the fact that he Not only
made it enjoyable, but he still had to juggle
the MCU cultural significance First all this
stuff. It's great. I didn't have it on my list
because in terms of emotional pathos and stuff
like that it didn't me story wise, as much as
the other ones. But in terms of cultural phenomenon,
if we're doing a cultural phenomenon list, yeah,
it'd be really, really high on my list. All right,
you beat me to the question of why it was not
on your list so good job sir Let's move on to
our number four interesting here, you know, I
was talking about with Captain America that you
know There's obviously multiple Captain America
films. How do you separate them? I feel like
you have another situation here with our number
four However, this was number one at the half
decade on our combined list as well as on DJ's
list and my list It was number three on Dan's
list Only appears on two people's list this time.
Just DJ and myself. We're talking about Avengers
Not anything else not infinity or not end game.
No colts. No colon Just good old Avengers DJ
you had a number four like I said, so it comes
in at number four here on the combined list What
do you think? This is factual information. It's
the film that broke Hollywood It broke it. It's
the film that forced every studio to try. Let's
build our own cinematic universe. Dark universe,
DCEU. Now they're trying to do the bloodshot
universe or the Veniverse, whatever it's called.
It broke Hollywood. It still broke Hollywood.
And why? Because Marvel put the work in. They
didn't rush to get to 2012's Avengers. They made
you understand who these characters were first.
The real risk was seeing how these characters
we liked would get along. And when they do it,
it just feels like magic, pure cinematic magic
where you can't understand the trick, but you
know, you've seen something special. I told the
story. I told him billions of times on Twitter
everywhere. I took my baby sister to see Avengers.
She was like 14 years old and Matt knows my sister.
She's not in the comic book, sir. She has attention
span of like - I thought you said your babysitter
at first. I was like, that's weird. She's always
going to be my babysitter because I'm older than
John. My grown woman sister who was a baby at
the time. She was like 14 and I was like, whatever,
20 something. I know the story well, yes. She
has an attention span of like a, you know, the
fish from the Finding Nemo movie that I can't
remember. But yeah, I remember we watched the
movie and she doesn't say anything the entire
film and then there's that long shot, not the
circle shot, the long shot where Hulk and Thor
are on the thing and then they're going up and
she just leans over and whispers to me, this
is so cool. And I will remember that moment for
the rest of my life, for my sister to actually
be like enthralled by a movie where. To me, it
was just like I was walking through heaven. But
for it to affect her, somebody who has no connection
to anything comic book stuff, no connection to
anything other than through me and my silly ramblings,
to actually just be unstruck for two hours and
then have the... She doesn't say anything just
to whisper to me that it was cool. Avengers will
always have that place. It's almost like a polar
opposite for me of what you get with Guardians
of Galaxy because Guardians of Galaxy comes out
Nobody expects anything. Nobody has you know
thinks it's gonna work and and the success with
Avengers I mean we should make a top 10 list
at one point of like movies throughout time that
have had the most pressure or the most riding
on it Yeah, like Avengers would be a shoe in
on that list I don't know where it would fall
but it has to be towards the top like you have
put Everything into this you have done all these
solo movies This is supposed to catapult you
onto X number of more solo movies and more combo
movies, etc, etc But nobody knows if you can
pull off putting all these characters in a movie
sharing screen time having them together having
them apart and making it somehow work and not
feel like Just a gobbledygook like you got like
again with the Batman And was a Batman and Robin
that tried to throw like 700 characters into
that movie. Yeah, just ridiculous And that's
what could have happened in a way here. It could
have just felt like this jumbled mess and Avengers
knocked it out of the park. So that's why it
was so high on my list. I had a number two this
time. Number one at the half decade mark just
for what it accomplished, what it achieved. I
know there might be other MCU films that resonated
more to individual people, maybe more maybe other
MCU films that are technically a better film.
But for what this one had to accomplish and for
it to do it. with you know a lot of success and
I just think that there's something that goes
with that I think you know there was a lot riding
on it that could have changed if Avengers would
have not been as successful going through they
might have switched strategies they might have
you know curtailed things they might have gone
a different direction but Avengers worked it
also we talked about comic book villains and
for me Loki is still always going to be towards
the top of that list. I just think that he's
a lot of fun to deal with. Tom Hiddleston is
a great actor and I just like kind of how that
plays into everything and how it, you know, you
can't trust him, you can't trust him, you can't
trust him, you can trust him type thing and then
how that kind of all goes. So I. I'm surprised
that only two of us had Avengers, but again,
is this a thing where now since we've had Infinity
War and we've had Endgame and we've had all these
different installments, you could even throw,
you know, Captain America Civil War is almost
an Avengers film in there. Does it become a thing
where you're picking your favorite one and it
loses some ground? Because we had infinity wars
show up on one person's list. We had endgame
show up on one person's list. Nobody had age
of Ultron, but Under age of Ultron has his moments.
But yeah, I think Avengers is the first craft
to make take flight and you've seen like jets
and spaceships and stuff but Avengers none of
this would happen. There's no infinity war without
Avengers. There's no a lot of stuff without Avengers.
You're probably not getting comic book movies
the way we're getting without Avengers. There
are no cinematic universes. There are no hey
we're gonna make a solo a Star Wars story because
we want to make a Star Wars cinematic. There's
none of that without Avengers working. Dan this
one obviously was number what I said three on
your half decade list Just missed it. Obviously
here. I know it's still one that you appreciate
So what caused Avengers to just kind of slip
out of the top ten here? I do think it's what
happens is Avengers the second half is amazing,
but When you can feel like other other ventures
films and other mcu films have built upon what
it did and done in a more complete fashion Because
I do think the first first hour or so of avengers
is not as strong There are some good character
moments, but some of the like the very opening
I don't it's kind of weird with like the loki
coming into the field base like I think that
compared to like worthy for something like, you
know civil war or Even some of the other avenger
movies like infinity war That they had more of
an emotional beat to it as well. Um Again, though
like dj mentioned that the the act when the invasion
actually starts Like that was some of the most
fun i've had this decade in a theater And I think
it was only top when you know with other other
avengers films seeing you know Seeing people
clap and cheer and yell and scream. Um, and like
if avengers isn't what it is if it isn't as successful
as is it was and as good as it was who knows
where The movies would have gone. Um, but again,
I still love that movie. It's just I think Where
we've gotten to like the other avengers films,
I guess as you mentioned would not have be able
to do what they're doing but Like they should
they're evolving and becoming better. So that's
why I just didn't make my my top 10 fair enough
All right, let's move on to our number three
pick This was the second film that was on three
people's lists. So I'm the only bad guy here
that didn't have this one listed But I have specific
reasons for that We already saw DJ's number one
fall. So let's have Dan and Matt's number one
fall And it was DJ's number six. So we're going
with spider -man into the spider -verse at our
number three pick here So just recapping DJ number
six Dan and Matt both number one DJ I let you
go first and then we'll let the two guys I had
at the top of their list wax poetic What did
you think of spider -man spider -verse and why
this high so I mean everybody I mean every time
I talk comic books of people something comes
around who is your favorite character and it's
always spider -man it's always gonna be spider
-man and Spider -man into the spider -verse serves
as a true love letter to spider -man in all of
his forms made by people who understand how cool
and important Spider -Man really is, where Supes
and Batsy are gods, almost. Spidey is us. He
has powers, but he has problems we can relate
to, which is true for Miles and Peter. That suit
is the respite to those problems. That suit gives
him the power to do what is beneficial for, not
for himself, but for others, to do what's right.
This movie is a great in the fact that it could
make 40 of them. And I wouldn't think is enough
because it's just under the fact when you watch
a movie, let's say a Fantastic Four movie where
they don't get character. And then you watch
a movie where just from the word go, oh, they
these guys did their work. They did the homework.
They put the work in us for the first five minutes.
I know I'm in good hands. And that's how I felt
when the first act of in a spider verse, when
I'm seeing Spider Nick cage is spider -man the
war come in or whatever and or or spider -ham
once I saw spider -ham I'm like, okay, that's
it. That's it. This movie is There is no way
they they they slept walked in when they wrote
this script to have spider -ham in this there's
they had to put the work in and this movie puts
work and it has A really good story miles morales
is one of the only characters in comic books
that jump universes from the ultimate universe
to the 616 universe And the fact that he's such
a compelling character, his story is so good.
And usually there's always replacement heroes
where, oh, I want the new version of this guy.
Miles is not that, but he's also his own person.
This movie is just great. I remember when I watched
it in theater and the animation. people were
freaking out because they couldn't understand
the the stop -motion kind of effects of what
they were doing and there was even a method to
the madness of that where spider -man is the
his effect is at 24 frames a second and Miles
is at 16 because he's not at he's gonna look
janky because he does not do spider -man yet
just the homework they put into this movie is
so good so much so spider -man in the spider
-verse was it's hard to put it lower than than
than five for me but it's it's up there Dan obviously
we talked about this one a little bit during
the animated segment of our countdown and it
appeared on three of the four people's list there
as well. Why Spider -Man Into the Spider -Verse
number one for comic book films for you. I think
it just stands out amongst the crowd for a number
of different things and I don't think there's
a movie that we watch more than Spider -Man Into
the Spider -Verse because my son loves it and
I've listened to the soundtrack so many times.
and watch it so many times and despite the fact
that i've watched it i still actually really
enjoy it and i still find myself becoming invested
and seeing little different visual gags here
and there of what they did and To me it's it's
i hate the term perfect movie because i don't
know what that means but to me it's as close
as a perfect movie That i could could think of
because it does everything You want to and then
some and it's not you have a great miles miles
story that if you even would take out everything
else that's in the film that's really strong
enough for it to stand on its own but then you're
able to add all these other factors even peter
parker story itself is. No he's well rounded
you when cece's character you know that you have
all these different facets that all work really
well the animation is i think is mind blowing
me amazing and. Hopefully will kind of show what
we can do with animation and push push the medium
forward So I think what this benefits from is
not only does it a whole high bar for the world
of comic book films and superhero films but also
animated films because I think it it does it
Exceeds what came before it in both areas and
in a lot of ways the voice casting is really
strong as well and they're not they're not You
know the most obvious choices, you know for those
characters either Love that. It's it's willing
to kind of look weird. It's willing to have Kingpin
look, you know completely not human with like
gigantic shoulders and a small head but it works
because of this how it's stylized and I I think
too I think this is gonna be maybe Perhaps maybe
only Black Panther a subtle film for I think
a lot of kids and this is gonna have one of those
films that has more of an impact even as decades
go on I'm where you know miles morales is going
to be in the same level as a character is peter
parker for you know i the generation that is
that is growing up now which is something that
wasn't the case you know kids because the characters
only been around for about a decade or so now
they're going to be on the same path and can
i showing that anyone can be underneath the mask
is i think the type of thing that is perfect
for this time but really anytime and it's something
that's kind of fit the character as well because
there's been Um, you know classic peter, uh spider
-man stories that i've touched upon that in a
way. Um, and then also I think perhaps the best
stanley Uh, one of the best stanley moments,
um, and very timely as well because it came out
right around his passing So that's why it was
my number one. It's it's it It's the one I felt
the most comfortable with like it was really
like I said with like captain america civil war
and winter soldier They're so close, but they're
also You know, they feel very similar in a way
where there's nothing quite like into the spider
-verse so that's why it was kind of easy to put
it for number one for me because of just how
Special it is compared to everything else in
the genre makes sense makes sense Matt. You also
headed at number one So I assume you echo most
of those sentiments. Yeah, most of them I mean
I guess also to to Dan's point, you know his
his son like his son loves the movie and this
is kind of brings it into a DJ's point about
the Avengers a little bit too where I can watch
a movie with my wife, you know, a comic book
movies. We watch a lot of movies. You won't watch
horror, but no, that's another thing altogether.
But her coming out of the movie, I mean, this
is probably more based on my excitement to show
her because I mean, I get off and I get off on
a lot of things, but I get off on the idea that
I can use my my my geek knowledge and your knowledge
when. Nicole, my wife, she asked me questions
about after things after the fact, like, Oh,
so who's my house? Why is he around? Why is this?
Well, who's the kingpin? Who's this? And the
fact that so many things were shot her way and
she retained everything in that film and a film
that very much like Scott, there must be a reason
why Scott Pilgrim was my number three in Spider
-Man Into the Spider -Verse is my number one
because I like bombastic. I like things that
are just coming at me and I can't even control
my brain because there's so many synapses firing
off. But her asking me all these questions, genuinely,
lovingly interested in what kind of went on with
Miles Morales and, you know, looking over and
seeing her like, you know, the whole thing with,
you know, his uncle with the prowler. And even
when, you know, Peter Parker says like, no kid,
you can't do this. And he webs him up and it's
like, it's a heartbreaking scene. And I see her
like kind of like crying. I'm like, oh, I get
that. I get where it's like in life people tell
you you can't do things You can't do things and
for so long everybody always said you can't do
a miles where alice a spider -man movie He's
black or he's mixed race spider -man's white
forever. It's like no he's not white spider -man
to Dan's point again spider -man is anybody who
wants to get up and take a stand against things
that aren't right in the world and that's why
you have so many different people who have written
spider -man over the course of his 60 years I
guess over 60 years of being a comic book character
and That just brings home and so many like special
different different ways and aside from it just
being a extremely entertaining animated film
and you know was Chris Miller and Phil Lord being
kind of like the harbingers of like we're gonna
make this film and we're gonna make this the
spider -man for everybody film because for so
long every film has been tribal. It's like, this
movie's for me, this movie's for me. It's like,
no, this movie is for every person who enjoys
characters and people that, you know, they don't
exist, but you can attain or you can grow to
maybe be that person or be that person in your
own way. So I'm getting like emotional about
this but I'm also I'm sorry Good so spider -man
into the spider -verse is our number three. Let's
move on to our number two Hey, we haven't heard
from the DC universe for a while. No, I'm just
kidding. There's no DC films left All right number
two we're down to the top two films which are
also the two films that were on all four of our
lists So for our number three pick we had spider
-man into the spider verse that was both Dan
and Matt's number one So for our number two pick
let's go to Dan and Matt's number two And that
is back to the world of Captain America this
time with the Winter Soldier So Captain America
Winter Soldier comes in at number two. It was
also number two at the half decade mark Dan,
again, I know you are, like I said, a huge Captain
America fan. I don't know if that's your favorite
superhero, but I believe it's up there if it's
not. So why Winter Soldier a little bit more
than maybe Civil War? And are you happy that
it came in here at number two? Yeah, so Captain
America is probably my favorite superhero. And
like I mentioned, it's probably one of my personal
list, because Winter Soldier, that storyline
is one of my all time favorites. And it kind
of got me back into reading comics when it first
came out, because I Every breaker son phillips
who did it it's utilization of like history and
kind of diving into the the psyche of captain
america What was it it showed how well rounded
a character cap can be outside of this kind of
this political or kind of a hyper realized Boy
scout type of hero it showed he's there's much
more depth to him And utilizing doing what was
at that time considered kind of sacrilegious
bringing back Bucky who was like the one character
that stayed dead in comics and but it ended up
working and I thought this took it was this is
very different than that story It doesn't delve
as much into the the world war two aspect of
the character. Some of the characters have changed
But it got that that core correct that that that
relationship between Captain America and Bucky
and how it drives Really kind of Captain America's
actions To me, Captain America, what makes him
an interesting character is that he morally does
the right thing. His ideology is not tied to
a country, it's not tied to a political stance,
it's what he believes is right. So the best thing
you can do to make him even more interesting
is giving him a situation where there's no clean
cut right or wrong answer, where things are complicated.
Or maybe he has to take what's considered the
wrong choice for the right reason which I thought
winter soldier did and did very effectively uh,
and made winter soldier himself into even kind
of a terminator ass type of character and probably
has my favorite action scenes within the mcu
the the The bridge fight, you know between and
what unfolds. It's fantastic. Uh, even like the
reveal two of hydra was huge. I thought that
was it Added so much to that film when the previous
films and what was to come within within the
MCU which was Kind of tied into similar Captain
America. That was more taken from a different
story, but I thought that was a really smart
move I love the relationship between I'll see
Rogers and Black Widow and I thought it actually
made Black Widow into a better round rounded
character to kind of see and give and give scholar
Johansson like wouldn't when that movie when
that came out I was like that's To me the first
signs of seeing yeah, they definitely should
do a black with a movie eventually. Maybe we'll
see one day. Hopefully don't come out sometimes,
but But yeah, so there that's again like i think
civil war, uh, as dj mentioned you could probably
say there's a much more emotional Um and ending
to that and there's a lot more at stake compared
to maybe winter soldier with the weather winter
soldiers end and ending is a little bit more
bombastic There you know it's kind of maybe too
big in a way where someone with the opposite
route. And so that that might make me drop it
down a few pegs but also brought back what's
my old time favorite captain america uniform
within the movies itself got rid of that awful
one from the avengers. I was a fan of and also
again this introducing. Falcon and that relationship
and how that on your left thing eventually comes
back. into the future Avengers films, but I don't
know. To me, it just, it made Captain America
into one of the best MCU characters, which, you
know, I love the first Avengers. I think it's
a really good movie, but this to me, it just
set a new bar from the opening sequence on the
ship. That one was fantastic, and it just kind
of just exceeded from there. And George St. Pierre
makes an appearance. DJ, what do you think of
Winter Soldier being at number two? It was my
number five. So the MCU, this movie came out,
I think was fine. We're like post Avengers. But
Winter Soldier, as Dan's saying, when it came
out, it was this film that really showed that
comic book films had longer legs than probably
most people thought. with the adoption of a genre
with a superhero sheen on top of it. I know Nolan
did it with the Dark Knight, but this kind of
showed that, oh, that wasn't a one trick thing.
You could do it with spies. As I said before,
you can do with Ant -Man, they use it with criminals,
the heist movies, stuff like that. And this movie
to me is not my number one. but I think it's
nearly a perfect movie. There's nothing I can
really pull. I mean, I guess the, the, the climax
with the, the, the hella cares. Some people crap
on, but I, I think it's more than that. I always
lean toward the emotional stuff. The I'm with
you cap to the end of the line stuff. And as
Dan had hinted at and is very, the most accurate
depiction I've ever heard. Lucky Barnes Winter
Soldier is the best Terminator you'll you've
seen since the t -1000 and yes to this day the
best Terminator you've ever seen it was the first
time in a movie where the villains get my oh
my god, I don't know He's gonna kill them. I
because he was so unstoppable and I remember
a friend of mine or somebody I talked to before
it said that Bucky is better at killing people
than Cap is at protecting them. That's what makes
him dangerous. So it's like Bucky might not be
as strong as Cap, but he's so, there is no hesitation.
And so that fight on the bridge where every move
Bucky makes is he's pulling a weapon. It's so
fantastic. And this is my favorite portrayal
until this Black Widow movie that I keep hearing
rumors about ever comes out. This is my favorite
Black Widow performance. This is my favorite
version of Scarlett Johansson where she, is a
sphinx until the scene where Cap is like, just
stop lying to me. That part, when she confesses
who the Winter Soldier is, I just love how Scarlett
plays that role in this movie. Every other time,
she's kind of like pushed to the side. But to
me here, the moments that she has with Steve,
and it's not even a, they kind of do a little
hint to the romantic thing, but it's not that.
I don't think Cap and Black Widow have that.
It's more like a brother -sister mutual respect
thing. And the way they're having a conversation
in Sam's house, and would you trust me to make
that decision? I trust you now. That stuff right
there, that stuff was what makes Winter Soldier,
to me, very within the score. Henry Jackman,
we keep talking about this guy. The score for
Captain America, Winter Soldier, is fan -friggin'
-tastic. I don't know which one I prefer more,
this one or his first class score. It's fantastic.
The music where Cap is escaping the Triskelion,
It's amazing. I would put it up there with any
MCU score I've heard. All right, Matt, quick
thoughts on Winter Soldier before we get to our
reveal of our number one. The fact that this
was coming out off of like the Avengers, but
the Avengers for me, it didn't make my list because
of the lack of stakes. I'm big on films where
I can go and go into a film thinking like, wow,
anything could happen. It's like, you're not
going to kill any of your big heroes in Avengers.
Give me a break. Good guys are going to win.
This one, to everybody's point about just Bucky
being the Terminator where it's like, wow, this
guy will kill anybody and can and has the ability
to do that. And there's literal like, wow, this
has got me on the edge of my seat. This is a
spy thriller that I don't really know what's
gonna happen. And it gets you emotionally invested
in both. Because you feel this pity and sympathy
for Bucky the entire time. Like this guy's obviously
being controlled from a higher power. You have
his best friend who wants so damn hard to do
whatever he can to protect him. And he doesn't
want to make the ultimate choice. And sometimes
he almost has to. But the fact that a movie like
this can have stakes and it's so well -crafted
and it showed you that the Russo brothers knew
what the hell they were doing. And the fact that
Kevin Feige and the whole MCU Godhead was like,
you're the guys, you brothers, you guys who directed
an episode of Community with Paintball Guns.
Welcome to Collinwood. Here you go. Here are
the keys. Are going to be the Sherpas to get
us to the very, very top of the entire universe
is also an interesting concept to me too. But
yeah. Good good great reveals. I mean the swerves
left and right and everything hydra being revealed.
It's like the they're not dead. They're still
here. It's everything about that movie. Just
it's That's why it's number two for me. It's
so damn good. It's so exciting. I love it So
staying at that number two spot halfway point
and at the full decade point So that is DJ Dan
and Matt's number ones have all been picked Dan
myself and Matt all of our number twos are off
the board. Everybody's number three is off the
board So what does that leave left for our number
one overall is on all four of our lists DJ any
guesses? I hope it's my number two. It is. Oh,
thank God Logan Logan comes in here DJs number
two Dan's number six Matt number four my number
one So DJ will let you start why Logan? There
have been we've talked about the many films out
there that have tried to deconstruct the superhero
I think Logan is the one film that does it right
while still showing respect to the character
This was the first and like he last film gloves
are off on the character Wolverine, but it It's
high on my list because of the surprisingly fantastic
performance and arc of Patrick Stewart's Charles
Xavier not surprising because I didn't think
he could do it Just because I didn't expect it
going in I thought this was all this is gonna
be the Logan show But they took a big facet of
the old Logan comic book Storyline and put it
on Xavier having for alert him be the one responsible
killing all the X -Men on accident, that the
tragedy of that, a man who has dedicated all
these movies since 2000, his life for peace and
mutant kind, unable to stop himself from eradicating
that same dream. On top of that, we get this
father and son relationship between Xavier and
Logan, which is like. Reminded me of this French
film called Amor. It's just very sad and depressing
because it's like he's doting on his father Xavier
is essentially the closest things out to a dad
and then on top of that you get this unapologetic
father and daughter a story with Logan and x23
I mean the film the film is just so brutal and
intense the actor sequences are directed like
It was like a Western 310 to Yuma by the guy
who directed 310 to Yuma. I mean and We could
talk about like you might make a list of the
top 10 best comic book moments in a movie and
the final shot of this film is one of those best
comic book movie moments I say that because there
is no dialogue The moving of the cross to form
an X got an audible response from me, everyone
in the theater. It is the one movie or the first,
I guess you can count it in game, but it was
the first comic movie where I like, I don't want
to say I was bawling my eyes out, but tears were
running on my face, especially the Xavier, the
Xavier confession scene on the bed when he's
just talking or I had a good day. This is the,
I don't deserve this. That was heart wrenching.
the ending it's it's so well done and you can
just tell that Mangold and Jackman and Stewart
left it all on the field for this movie Absolutely,
Matt. What are your thoughts on Logan being our
number one? I mean having it in my in my top
five having it in my in my number four and it's
funny the kind of the difference that man gold
made between making the wolverine and then logan
because a lot of people shit on the wolverine
i like the wolverine personally because i like
i like having logan in in japan i think it's
an interesting comic arc and i was always a big
fan of that because i think uh correct me if
i'm if i'm wrong damn that was frank miller who
did that uh story yeah yeah that was so but i'm
a huge frank miller fan i'm a mark for him because
i think he is Just unapologetic himself, even
though he probably says a lot of dumb things,
but I still like his work. But Logan from beginning
to end, it transcends. I mean, yes, it's comic
book characters doing comic book things. But
this brings me to the whole thing of the very
first X -Men movie by Bryan Singer. It has always
been about Wolverine. Wolverine has been the
epicenter of the X -Men universe from the beginning.
And then basically making this film in a dystopian
future where all the X -Men have been killed
by the one person who swore to save them. And
also just he doesn't have a memory of it happening
too, which is even tragic. The fact that the
greatest mind in mutant kind has Alzheimer's
and can't control his powers is pretty bleak.
That's a very bleak future I would never want
to want to live in as well. And you have Logan
who's given up Given up the life and chosen to
be a a chauffeur for his father in a lot of ways
and it's just It's done. It's rugged. It's gory.
It's There's so many things about it that you
know, you still get comic book fans can still
sink their teeth into all the comic book aspects
but a lot to dj's point is this humanity behind
The the characters where you strip away all the
powers you strip away Suits the costumes this
and that you strip away the adamantium and the
mutant power psychic powers and you just have
these People which they I mean they weren't unfortunately
weren't they weren't born people they were born
special a lot of ways But it's a very very human
story in I mean I will say this where DJ was
shedding a tear with the X thing. I Was groaning
at the end of that I mean, I don't know. I'm
just of course. This is me being you know an
asshole probably about the whole thing I'm like,
oh, of course. They put it access. He's an axe
man. I'm like It bothers me a little bit but
everything up until and even that end is still
very Like it's it's it's so well made the whole
film for the whole thing. I can look past something
That's like okay. I get he's an x -man. But the
film is just I don't know it's to just point
again the deconstruction of the uh of the x -man
or the x -man x -woman whatever you want one
of the habit to be is uh pretty pretty incredible
to behold i had never seen it i was like why
why would you make this movie it's very bleak
it's like because we have to make a movie like
this this is this is a swan song of these characters
you've been watching for 20 years you know i
think that's what it boils down for me you know
patrick stewart and hugh jackman are acting royalty
in my book And like there, this is like the perfect
way for them both simultaneously to put exclamation
points on characters that they've played for
decades, it seems like. And it's just done so
well that the emotional, the emotional cord that
runs throughout this film for me is what puts
it at my number one. I had more of an emotional
reaction to this one than I probably had anything
else that we've talked about today. Dan, any
surprise that Logan shows up here at the number
one spot? Yeah, most price is number one. I thought
it'd be top five for sure but I Don't have that
much argument against it. Obviously it wasn't
my top five. I do really like it as well It's
weird because I never really considered it necessarily
a deconstruction of the comic book genres appear
genre But I guess you could certainly make that
make that argument. Maybe that's why it's a successful
one But too I mean it's obvious as it's you know
in the film itself, but clearly like a huge reference
point is something like Shane And you know it
being kind of a neo -western in a way and again
as i talked about it with uh x -men these future
past one of my favorite things about the x -men
film since the very beginning is there the dynamics
of the characters and the strength of the performances
and what with it and i don't think you can do
logan with other without having Those you know
literally decades of years for those characters
to build that relationship i give logan was the
only film. Right i don't know if it would be
a strong not to take anything away from it but
showing that there are also. Some benefits to
having some sort of franchise like there's people
complain about that and think there's some legitimacy
to it but it also can lead to something as impactful
as as logan and i thought you know. I know it
was I believe it was on many different Oscar
for best screenplay And remember that that being
kind of a surprise, but we're really hoping that
you know pound I thought Patrick Stewart for
certainly was Oscar worthy within that role and
certainly deserved it I mean in that even though
it's a more than like someone like well You know
some people played the Joker in the recent past,
but I thought there was more There's more to
that character Charles Xavier and FNA just More
later I'd say in the tragedy of him and kind
of like the in you know, how he's playing this
kind of Man was gone insane and trying to cap,
you know the guilt he has I know I just feel
like there's so much To the direction they took
him. I want you to decide I love the changing
of the you know, slowly just tilting the cross
into an axe I can't get it because i just thought
they did it. It makes sense again being a comic
book film and how it was done and why who did
it i think it also kind of slow fires that relationship.
I'm always always been that character that so
for some reason always tricks up relationships
with younger girls and it making it not being
creepy and actually working with you know rogue
in the first x -men film and. You know extra
x -23 here, although technically she kind of
his daughter. I guess you could argue with but
yeah, it's it was I remember when we the trailer
came out and was like the What song was it? I
can think of it Johnny Cash hurt Yeah, and it
is it's very much like a Johnny Cash song lived
through the superhero world. So Surprises number
one considering like it's you know a much different
film compared to what we are typically getting
in with the superhero genre. But I think you
can make a lot of argument that it's deserving
of it. And I think a good representation of what
you can do when you have great actors and a director
who believes in the property. Absolutely. All
right. We're going to give everybody a quick
chance just to highlight some of the films that
were on their individual list that didn't make
the top 10. And then we'll wrap this show up.
So, DJ, for you, we're talking about Wonder Woman,
Deadpool and Dread. What do you think about those
and why did they make your list? Bread was my
highest of those three because Stallone murdered
the first one then Carl Urban comes around not
a good way and Then Carl Urban comes around and
goes this is how you do it man. This is how you
Honor a character understand a character. You
don't take the helmet off. And again, like I
tell you all the time I love the baddies and
Lena Headley's mom mama is so good And so understand
she doesn't do a lot of crazy stuff is just that
she does crazy stuff but i mean it's just a perfect
foil to him and a lot of people say oh dreaded
he doesn't really have a character and i think
that's the point he is just the embodiment of
the law. Anderson is our avatar into that role.
So I love Dread. Deadpool is Deadpool. There's
no other actor other than Hugh Jackman or maybe
RDJ that was born to play a role other than Ryan
Reynolds playing Deadpool. Deadpool essentially
is the pendulum swing away from X -Men Origins
Wolverine to where you have the entirely the
worst version of a character to the best version
of the character wrapped up in a very, very,
very great Romantic subplot or not even subplot.
It's the plot of the movie. It's probably why
I don't like Deadpool 2 as much because they
abandoned that the Marine Bracken and Ryan Reynolds
relationship is fantastic and Wonder Woman you
can just copy and paste everything I said about
Guardians of the Galaxy because nobody thought
it would work Me most of all, Gal Gadot, I was
pissed off when they cast her and she's not only
the probably the best cast person in the DCEU.
She is like one of the greatest ambassadors for
that character. And it's the only shining light
that DCEU have is Wonder Woman for me. Wonder
Woman was the only film that did not make the
combined list that was on two people's list,
because I also had it at number nine. It was
the DC's other best chance at getting in there.
So we chance Some films on your list that didn't
make the overall list we had dr. Strange spider
-man homecoming and kick -ass any thoughts on
any of those I like kick -ass because it's just
weird and it's off the wall and It's another
one of these it's it's a superhero film in the
idea that there's people that are dressed up
as comic book characters, but there's nothing
super about any of them and I also just like
I like Mark Millar a lot because he is a He just
creates horribly grotesque situations that I
think are amazing in the in the same way of like
a Garth Ennis or anybody else or Anybody who's
kind of from the UK who just is like well, I'm
gonna make weird stuff. So hope you guys enjoy
this Spider -man homecoming was my spider -man
second spider -man thing. I mean, it's it I don't
know Tom Holland was born to make it and it has
Batman playing the vulture, which I think is
poetic in a lot of ways and I don't know it's
it's a lot of fun and Dr. Strange I like I mean,
I'm definitely I guarantee I'm probably in the
minority on that but Ben in the combat cummerbatching
embodies everything I would want a doctor strange
he's in Asshole in the beginning and then turns
into a superhero and the ending of it with the
whole of using the time gem Is is so wonderful
and I get so much joy about watching that last
about 15 minutes of the film where he's just
playing games with Doramo I Have it's probably
one of my top three DC not DC MCU moments ever
in the history of the MCU just that one thing
going back with an almighty almighty entity of
the universe and you being a guy who just happens
to master the mystic arts and have the The time
gem and do that. It's clever. It's done. Well,
and it also Begs the question of where we're
gonna get Baron Baron Mordo down the line, which
I love Baron Mordo I think everything about that
movie is just really good and it's fun I lied
Wonder Woman and kick ass both were on two people's
lesson didn't make the list because kick ass
was also on Dan's Kick ass and dread both made
the half decade list so we did give them some
more love at that point Real quick before you
give yours Dan the ones that were on my list
that didn't make it There was really only two
Wonder Woman and Avengers endgame. I really thought
about Thor Ragnarok That one came close And Deadpool
was really close and then I just gave a brief
moment just because personally I like the two
films but Kingsman the Secret Service and Amazing
spider -man just the first one if we could ignore
everybody's hate for the other one. I like the
first one because I like Garfield as that character,
but those are the ones that I thought about Dan
you had some on yours as well. We have death
of Stalin edge of tomorrow Snowpiercer and kick
-ass thoughts on any of those Yeah i think i
can guys again is one of the films i feel like
is better than the source material even though
i do enjoy the source material you know i just
want we talked a lot about in the sci fi lists
again it's just that movie just. Pure underrated
adrenaline and just a great concept that's executed
brilliantly at the death of stolen is a comic
i like what movies you know fantastic obviously
i'm coming from people that is v and. I'm in
the loop it's just great dark circle humor and
again showing what you can do with the comic
book genre dealing with. I'm with one of the
most chaotic. What's in recent you know in your
history with the last century. And some of the
camera my top 20 I know we were kind of thunking
on the TCEU or whatever we call it and rightfully
so but I did also really like outside of Wonder
Woman. I did really like Shazam. You don't want
to get hit by lightning. It's understandable.
I know I don't know why I can't say that word,
but. I did really like that, especially kind
of how that to me has one of the darker moments.
You know we talked about the. know Batman vs
Superman and how dark that is To me that has
a dark moment that actually works in the right
way And yeah in X -Men first class we talked
a lot about days of future past My X -Men film
that was on my top 10 was first class And I actually
did mention this it was on Twitter last night
talking about the the final moment with the coin
Which is such a fantastic film. I imagine the
Magneto theme It has, to me, one of my favorite
moments. One of my favorites in that is actually
halfway through it, where Charles Xavier and
Magneto have this really small intimate moment
where all he does is help Magneto, Eric, to move
a satellite, kind of finding that perfect moment
of zen. And Fastbender kills it. It's just a
focus on his face. And it just sells it completely.
And to me, that's the core of that Movie in what
will what makes that ending so tragic and then
and seeing that that relationship further Kind
of devolve in days of future past again, which
is why I love the action films and you know There
are some issues with first class, you know, like
how Darwin is is taken out I think is not a great
not a great thing but the sequence up to that
how the use a Israel's power to anyways, I can
talk about the movie all day. It's kind of basically
James Bond movie um as well um so i do really
love first class um but yeah so i think we're
gonna mention all the all the movies yeah you're
gonna mention the uh magneto in the in the bar
scene oh yeah that's a fantastic moment too that
brings me a lot of joy because personally gives
me a lot of joy i'm like yes finally Full transparency,
if Edge of Tomorrow and Snowpiercer had not appeared
on my list for the last episode, they would have
appeared here. So that would have probably booted
out Wonder Woman and Captain America Civil War
off of my list for those two. So I just kept
them off since I had just talked about them on
the last list, but I'm definitely in favor of
those as well. So there's a lot of good comic
book films to talk about, to go watch, to review
from the last decade. I don't think anybody can
argue that it was probably the best decade. That
we've ever had when it comes to comic book films
Unless I'm just being blind to some other decade.
I that's not a question, right? Last decade.
I think you're right These were pretty good.
They had the Punisher and stuff. I'll stop it.
Stop it. I have a Nick Ferry movie in there.
