About this Episode

TFG1Mike and PecanCtMichael analyze the Phineas and Ferb episodes "The Fast and the Phineas" and "Lawn Gnome Beach Party of Terror." They share their thoughts on the series' approach to storytelling, the debut of recurring characters like Buford, and Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s schemes. The hosts also discuss the evolution of the show's musical numbers and the recurring gags that appear throughout these early entries.

Women and children and the faint of heart may

wish to leave now. It's an alternating sign matrix

number It's a number of partitions of ten Don't

tell Galvatron it has something to do with the

matrix For 42 is the key to the decepticon matrix

of leadership And welcome to episode two, the

second day of summer here on the Palka, the podcast

organization, medical acronym brought to you

by the GeekCast radio network. I am your host

TFU and Mike. And joining me is Pecan Court Michael.

Hello. Hey, how's it going? It's going. Today's

the second day of summer. And today is our second

day of journeying to Phineas and Ferb. We're

going to be talking about the fast and the Phineas

and Lawn Nome beach party of terror. Now let

me ask you really quickly before we get into

the fast and the Phineas Were you a family like

dr. Duvin Schmertz? Did you have lawn gnomes

to scare away? Whatever lawn gnomes are supposed

to scare away. I don't understand lawn gnomes

I don't understand pink flamingos. I Don't understand

those ducks that you dress up Have you seen these

on porches? I Yeah, I don't get it. I I just

don't I I don't I can't no All right, we're gonna

go on down the racetrack and catch up with the

fast and the Phineas after this What should we

do today, I mean besides giving Perry a bath

What is that wonderful noise in the third lane,

the newcomers, Team Phineas. Now, is it just

me or does he look a little bit young to be behind

the wheel of a 700 -horsepower racing machine?

Yes, yes he does. And look, he's already got

his own screaming fans! Phineas! Hey, Candice

is rooting for us. Candice, you're on the big

screen. Phineas! And your little brother's gonna

be on TV. Phineas? On TV? The fast and the Phineas

inspired by a car race in the distance Phineas

and Ferb upgrade mom's car and turn it into a

race car number 42 and enter in the swamp oil

500 where Phineas races against other racers

with Ferb acting as his helper and Isabella and

the fireside girls as his pit crew Candice constantly

tries to bust them by just surprising Linda with

what they're doing But keeps missing by just

a second elsewhere. Dr. Duffin Schmerz tries

to deflate everything in the tri -state area

from his blimp okay so this is I can't decide

if they're trying to go for like days of thunder

kind of reference here or going for a If they're

going for a Fast and the Furious reference here

if it's a combination of both I certainly don't

think it's a reference as far as the That quote

-unquote classic 2001 film starring Sylvester

Stallone driven. I know it's not a reference

to that clearly that No, but this is you know

your your NASCAR kind of race thing. It's it's

And also I can think of his sweet daddy D one

of Jeff Dunham's puppets. Oh Lordy, there's no

hockey. What are we gonna do? Oh, let's watch

NASCAR. Look, they're gonna make a left turn

and another left turn Wait 10 minutes come back

Doing the same stuff all over again This I I

like this one, I think this one's really cool

Was not my favorite I Really dug this one. I

have more I have more. Yes. Yes, we do moments

than no No, we don't moments on this one because

I'm one of those types of people that I'm I used

to be a NASCAR fan yeah, back when back in the

Early, I just don't understand NASCAR either

That back in the early 2000s, I think in 2002

2003. Yeah, right right around there. I was I

was living with a buddy of mine and we we'd what

he watched NASCAR all the time and vote, you

know, root for Dale Earnhardt Jr. and all that

stuff and everything else back then. You know,

all right. Back when Matt Kenseth was first on

the scene and all that stuff and whatever I mean,

I like NASCAR. I've seen days of thunder. I like

Tom Cruise in a race car. It's all right You

know, I'm just not a fan. I yeah, I don't I don't

understand it. Yeah, you turn left again Turn

left again. Are you just waiting for it's like

hockey. Are you waiting for someone to get hurt?

Are we are we one high stick away from you know,

getting Return on investment of all the time

we put into this I'm gonna five -minute Penalty

for game misconduct pal. It's long thing of his

raff and Casey in the original Turtles movie

Going back and forth in Central Park. It's all

I can think of when it comes to hockey But that's

you know, I Live about an hour and a half two

hours tops away from the Canadian border. So

I'm pretty far away from the Mason Dixie line

Therefore I don't understand Racing Just it's

just not One of those things that I dig Yeah,

I dig it. It just depends. I mean, I think it's

cool They're showing us from yesterday's episode

to this episode that they're showing us How much

different stuff that Phineas and Ferber are gonna

be doing and basically the possibilities are

endless Yeah, also we can almost triangulate

where Danville is Mm -hmm. So you're either You're

got to be somewhere within driving distance of

South Dakota and you have to be somewhere below

the Mason Dixie line Mm -hmm. It's Mason Dixon

not Mason Dixie Well, you know, I learned about

this from from Chuck Jones cartoon. So it's kind

of like pixie and Dixie. Anyway, all right. Which

is also only in the south. I can think of as

Beanie and Cecil. I see. There's a conspiracy

here somewhere. Yes. Any other thoughts on the

overall plot? No, let's just get an oral license.

Just like all right. Yes. Yes, we do moments

blogging a new pick for her blog Can you imagine

what Candice would do today with all the social

media apps like tinder and grinder and? Snapchat

and oh my god that girl would be on social media

all the time. I would swipe left Swiper no swiping

I can't believe I worked in a Dora the Explorer

reference into this show I do actually Dora the

Explorer nowadays reminds me of Ariel winter

That's because it is aerial winter, isn't it?

Well, yeah, if you watch the Funny or Die stuff,

yeah. Oh, okay. It's like... Free reduction aerial

winter. So in the... When Candice is trying to

get mom to bust them, they're having the car

drive back and forth up and down the street.

I love when it does that. They constantly whoosh

the hairstyles between the two brothers and they

change. They change colors. They change heads.

They change, yeah. And then Phineas is like,

what's the red button for? And then Ferb just

hands it to him. And I'm like, dude, you never

press the red button. The red button is the best

part. Come on. And I got a kick out of this.

When we get to the motor speedway, they announce

what it is. It's the Jefferson County Motor Speedway.

Well, I actually live in Jefferson County. Somewhere

below the Mason Dixie line. Yeah. But not within

driving distance of Mount Rushmore. Yes, no,

we are in a huge driving distance of Mount Rushmore

It's a schlep I like that they say The they call

it the swamp oil 500 Mm -hmm, and I was wondering

if that was somehow a reference to the creators

of the show swampy marsh. Yeah What do they call

damn poppin Meyer oily No, his name's in the

town oil No, where'd they get swamp oil the swamp

oil? Mm -hmm. I don't know man. They mean they

could have called it the the swamp Meyer My or

500 it's probably two on the nose, but I had

both their names in it kind of sorta What else

did you like about this one 42? Okay, it's the

amazingly accurate answer to life the universe

and everything apparently so in your world Well

if you read hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy

It explains you've never read it. Have you you

just turn in your geek card right now? Yeah,

it's not a big deal. I mean honestly just go

read it was it 500 pages. I don't know Just read

it. You're supposed to have read it. You don't

know how long anyway Oh, you know there's around

here somewhere. I don't want to dig it out though

around here somewhere amongst all these other

transformers I haven't buried under buried under

all the toys. I don't know Somewhere all right

anything else for a moment you like the first

inator First inator. Yeah, the deflate inator

ray Yeah, such a stupid idea. Backfired on him.

It's like out of all the tires that are going

by on the racetrack, it hits a beach ball. Oh,

I'll talk about that in a minute. Oh, you have

more? Okay. No, I'll get to that when we get

to the no, no, you don't. Oh my. All right. No,

no, we don't moments. All right I know it's a

part of the plot and it's a setup is to set up

team Phineas for the win But why is there a beach

ball at the racetrack? Come on people It's because

the race itself is not entertaining enough. You

have to have props in the audience Like I know

everyone like, you know, you look at a baseball

game everybody brings foam fingers or funky looking

drink dispensing hats or anything like that like

I get that I just don't understand why at any

sporting event unless like you said unless you're

getting bored why you would bring up bring and

blow up a beach ball and eventually have it interfere

with whatever like I get it for this it's part

of the plot it sets up whatever but just It's

just one of those things. Um, okay. Wait a minute

You're telling me that it's socially acceptable

to wear the weird beer hats at these things The

beer drinking hats with the do it all the time

really this Wow Okay Yeah. It's NASCAR. They

have to stay drunk somehow. I'm gonna add this

to the list of why I'm better than most people.

It's a long list. Yeah, but see here's the difference

between you and every other regular Joe. You

drink wine. You drink that fruity stuff. You

don't drink beer. No, I like wine and I like

good beer. There's a difference. Good beer is

not drunk from your forehead. It doesn't work

that way. Good beer is not drunk from your forehead.

You don't stick good beer into your hat or however

that shit works and drink from it. It's just

wrong. So wrong. In fact, if you can avoid drinking

good beer from a straw, do so. I'm just saying.

OK, then. All right. So so so no wine with a

screw off top then, right? Oh, no. You get you'll

be here all night. You'll be here all night.

Your mother fervent top away from my mother fervent

wine. Savages, savages in this town. Right. All

right. Drinking beer from their heads and putting

I'm in the locks. It would just say All right.

No, no, we don't moments. I know it's a oh, I

already said this so we are know a little check

mark next to things I Got drunk off all the all

the drink talks. Well, that's exactly what it

was. Yeah. Okay, so we mentioned last Episode

yesterday's episode that Phineas's voice is off.

Uh -huh Isabella's animation model changes clothes

three times in this episode at first She's seen

in her regular outfit then when she's with the

fireside girls She's in her fireside girls outfit

and then when she's at the racetrack singing

go go Phineas She's in her regular clothes again.

Oh You know, I I didn't think that was a problem.

I mean, it's the fireside girls were there so

she Changes yeah, but she's usually in her foot

when that when she is with them. She's usually

in her fireside girl outfit So that's why oh,

I just didn't see that as a problem I thought

it would be funny if they all had like pit crew

outfits, but yeah, you know, but you know I'll

deal with the fireside girl outfit sure why not

Didn't seem like a problem to me Why does that

sound so wrong coming from you? What they're

all dressed up in their in their fireside girl

uniforms, yeah Take tails In you went don'ts.

Yeah The only the only other thing I had was

twice when Candice into Kansas interrupts mom

more than once but twice when she interrupts

Linda I noticed that Linda puts her cards down

face up Basically shows the hand to the other

ladies from the bridge club or the Whatever they're

playing on conspiracy. No, did they add up to

42? I bet they did Freeze frame freeze frame

and count. Nope. What what didn't you like about

this one? NASCAR You know, it just wasn't as

exciting um again you know it's like we have

to top the first episode and a big remote control

car to me just isn't doing it it's not we haven't

we haven't gone beyond you know what we've already

done we need to top that somehow maybe by making

a beach or something i don't know I kind of thought

they did top it a little bit during the point

where Phineas is asking for him to go faster

and all of a sudden he slows down and you know

when 1920s car rolls by. That was kind of good.

That was kind of funny. I like when he plugs

the car battery in and he goes so fast his face

is peeling off and he's like ahhh. Yeah, that's

what I'm talking about. That was a funny psych

gag, yeah. Alright folks, time for ratings. What

would you give this one? Oh man, I haven't given

one a significantly poor rating yet, so I think

we're gonna give this one a 2. Okay, I'm gonna

give it a 2 .5. I did enjoy it, but... As you

said, there are better episodes. I did enjoy

it for what it is. I do like NASCAR, but what

really drug me down this time was, and that's

probably going to be running gag with me throughout

the entire time we do this this summer, is that

sometimes the Phineas and Ferb plot. is kind

of lame and then um on some episodes and then

the doofenshmirtz plot is great and then vice

versa and this was one of those vice versa's

where i enjoyed the phineas and ferb plot more

than i did the deflatinator i mean come on it

bounced off a mirror and hit it oh just that

is so cliche so yeah two and a half for me two

for you We are gonna get to the Long Gnome Beach

Party of Terror after this. the tv remote i've

got to start labeling these things you are mine

finally i will read myself of you but first all

right folks last up today in this episode of

podcast organizational radical acronym we have

lawn gnome beach party of terror phineas and

verb bill a huge paradise of a beach in their

backyard on the hottest day of the year. Meanwhile,

H &P tries to stop Dr. Doofenshmirtz from stealing

all the lawn gnomes in the Tri -State area in

revenge for having to dress as one in his youth.

Oh my god, this episode makes absolute sense.

Well, doesn't he want to destroy them or something

or other? I'm not sure exactly what he's trying

to do. Did he collect them all to destroy them?

I thought that's what it was. I mean, technically

he could have ground them all up and then used

their remains to pave his road to China. You

know, I noticed a running gag between... I didn't

mention this in Fast and the Finneas, but...

When Candice tells mom to turn on the TV she

goes in and she's like, oh which remote is it?

And this is Garcia, but you're all it's Shapiro's

like, oh turn on the cable box for is like six

different remotes We have a running gag in here

with doofenshmirtz in his in his room. It's like

a multiple remotes. Yeah, what no what was a

Ship room. What was her name again? Mrs. Garcia

should yeah, was she not just Painfully stereotypically

Jewish She says oy vey Chris, she's like who

says oy vey? I'm like Jewish people I think You

know I yeah, she kind of the first time I saw

her she got again She kind of reminded me of

a really old Jewish princess It's so human I

think she's trying too hard Anyway, I'm sorry

Yeah, and she's one of those moms that loves

to talk your ear off and ask you like like we

see in this episode talk your yeah In last episode

talk your ear off and everything else. Yeah,

but long known beach party of terror beach party

of terror like how they're going to basically

defy what the what the deed the morning DJ says

and then later on in the summer in a future episode

they do have a do -nothing lazy day because the

DJ says to them in this you know it's so hot

out there the best thing to do is to grab a semi

-aquatic mammal and and a best friend or a brother

and get under a shady tree and just have a do

-nothing day or whatever you didn't like uh...

okay that's not gonna happen firm today we're

going to build the giant middle finger that that's

a radio guy can see from orbit so mom is going

to the impression that the boys are going to

build their beach out of their sandbox and candice's

like yeah you know it's going to be bigger than

their sandbox right It's a beach! Yeah, it's

a beach. Life's a beach. That's the truth. So

now, apparently, Danville is in Southern California.

Well, you know, we've already seen their backyard,

and we know that their backyard is not butted

up next to a lake or an ocean or a large body

of water of any sort. Yeah. So technically they

made their own beach. They said we're gonna need

more sand Right, and they're gonna need more

water But the way it looks like it looks like

a cow it looks like Venice Beach or Malibu Beach

or whatever beaches out there They did a really

good job Yeah, they did they vastly outdid their

remote -control race car. Yes. Yes, they did

and And their their national monument defacement

Yeah, yeah, so this is this is the episode I

was waiting for Yeah, no, I really like this

one. There's a lot of cool things going on Yeah,

this is the So we met Isabella in the last episode

in the last couple episodes actually and this

is the first time we meet Buford Van Stomp Buford's

first appearance. Yep, and also the first appearance

of Jenny and Stacey Yep, and I didn't realize

that Jenny was was introduced so early. I thought

she came later Because she's kind of used sporadically

that's kind of like when yeah when Stacy's not

around They'll bring Jenny or when when they

deliberately omit Stacy they'll bring out Jenny

but Yeah, I didn't realize that she was introduced

so early in the series, but Jenny and Stacy make

an appearance You know, that was kind of cool

Jeremy and all his friends come Jeremy's back.

Yeah They have They have Bobby Nelson they have

Jordan. Oh, what's his name? Are those real people?

No Bobby Nelson is the kid that the Buford ends

up using to beat the other kid and oh for some

reason I thought maybe that was like an extreme

sports legend that I just wasn't aware of I don't

follow NASCAR and I don't follow extreme sports,

so it's entirely possible that... The kid that

Buford starts using the half Nelson and the full

Nelson, he starts beating him with Bobby Nelson.

He's using a Bobby Nelson. Yeah. Yeah. That kid

is... We will see him again. That is Jordan.

That's the kid whose dad does the super giant

stuff. that that's in a later episode that's

the episode where they go to the museum and it's

the unpainted desert or something or other they

are i just remember the kid's name uh okay you

know so so yeah um so candice goes up to jeremy

tries to give him a Coconut soda or something

smoothie. I don't know whatever it is No, she

gets hit by some she gets hit by a surfer or

something and ends up getting carried away by

a crab which Allows her to win the how low can

you go? Limbo contest which then makes her Queen

wahini of the beach All right Meanwhile, dr.

Doofenshmirtz an agent P Are so doctor, this

is I believe this is the first episode where

he's done a backstory At least in the order that

we're watching them in right, right? I believe

this first episode he did a backstory. He talks

about his days in Gimmel stomp Where apparently

lawn gnomes were in in short supply and apparently

if you didn't make your payments on your lawn

gnome It got taken away repossessed your lawn.

Yeah repossessed repossessed of lawn gnomes oh

god i can just see lizard lick towing or any

of those other re re re re re re re re re re

re re re re re re re re re So he was a lawn gnome

for most of his life And because of this he wants

at least a whole summer. I think yeah, yeah because

of this he wants to basically Collect or destroy

or take away all the lawn gnomes from everybody

else So I guess all the other people in Danville

now have to be lawn gnomes like he was I the

logic of the scheme is crazy Yeah, why not let

us have the lawn gnomes. Yeah, honestly, they're

disturbing So So he has this destructo inator

or destructinator And it has two settings on

it suck and blow In you and don't yes What that's

what it says on it is right on there. Yeah, it

reminded me of mega made It's a giant vacuum.

It has gone from suck to blow. To blow, that's

right. So eventually he does suck up all the

lawn gnomes and then he and Agent P get into

a fight and Agent P knocks him back into the

thing which basically turns it into a volcano

and instead of... Gnome again. No, it's no look

at it. We get run for your life Everybody get

hit get I love the one guy who's protecting our

gardens It's hilarious My concrete duck and this

Halloween costume is back there now. It's okay.

They had everything under control Mm -hmm. I

don't understand the concrete Alright, yes, yes

we do moments here. I had to laugh at Dr. D's

remote conundrum. So many remotes, so little

time. The craziest and coolest thing about the

Phineas and Ferb cartoons are just how fast,

easy, and efficient the cleanup is. The irony

of Dr. D's Destructinator erasing the evidence

that they built a beach in the backyard is just

so hilarious. If anything, that could be counted

as another running gag, though. That's how the

A story and the B story meet. Yep, pretty much.

Yeah, the destruction Yeah, the destruction of

dr. Dufrin smirks his contraptions is nine times

out of ten what makes the boys is uh boys Barry

the boys Yeah, what makes their contraptions

disappear or their their shenanigans if you will

yeah that All right, what did you like about

this one? The musical numbers Hmm, you know,

I mean I thought Way back when I had read somewhere

that this show was kind of based on the idea

that they would have a musical number and you

know later on every pretty much every show has

like Something at least at least one song at

least one and this being you know kind of like

the fourth episode They they crammed at least

three in there to make up for the lack of music

So they have the the Ferb reggae song Backyard

Beach. Yeah, they've got the slow dance, which

you only had one line of dialogue or one line

of lyric I guess but yeah, but that was there

and then at the very end you've got the Perry

theme for the first time You know So I mean they

they really tried to make up for it I got the

impression that maybe they wanted to include

like the Perry theme earlier, but just didn't

get a chance to or or something. Either that,

or they said, wow, we really need music. We gotta

cram everything in here. But that's what they

did. Did you notice there's no evil jingle in

this episode? No, I didn't. Yep, no evil jingle.

I didn't have enough time with all the other

music. Apparently one of the other gags is, and

we didn't mention this earlier, it's always the

bird that runs into the Phineas and Ferb's inventions.

Instead of running into their invention, it flies

too close to the sun and bursts into flames.

I didn't notice that. You know, I didn't even

think of the bird as a running gag. But now that

you say, now that you mention it, yeah, it has

happened at least three times. Did it happen

in the first episode? It happened in Roller Coaster.

Oh, right. So no, that's right. He hits the roller

coaster. And then when Candice loses her head,

he hits the painting of Mount Rushmore. Yeah.

And the Fests and the Phineas? I don't remember

off the top of my head. Oh, I'm going to have

to go back and watch the whole damn thing now.

Watch for that bird. In this one, this is the

first time I believe we get a platypus. Perry

the Platypus! He's like what are you doing here?

Oh wait, he's a platypus wait, he's pairing the

platypus. Yeah, that's hilarious. I was gonna

mention that and I Yeah, that was funny, you

know, I gotta say When the boys were a lot younger

at one point we oh Where did we get this it was?

at one point we got a like sticker form sheet

that was like a beach scene and and and all the

stickers were from the show so you've got you

know Candice and Jeremy and the boys and Perry

you're talking about your actual kids not facing

for no my kids yeah okay okay yeah they were

much younger than they are now but but yeah so

doing that my boys got It had like a placemat

that you could peel stickers on and off and and

it but it was a beach scene and then they had

stickers that were you know from here and there

was a I'm trying to remember what all the stickers

were but you know, you basically make your own

beach scene and and They had a lot of fun with

that Yeah, but it's but I mean the cool thing

is when you go back and watch the episode again

I think we I didn't see this episode for the

first time until after they got the sticker set

and then it was like Oh, this is what that's

from Cool. Yeah, so it's really neat to see I

Have no no we don't moments. I absolutely love

this episode. Yes cartoon is great. I love the

volcano Yep, oh, you know I love the gnome again

Yeah, I mean there. There's just no there's no

downside here. I mean even Candice had a good

time Yeah, until mom came home and ruined it

all and she's like I love her I love her explanation,

but she's like Candice Just what's going on back,

and then she runs through it all as everything

else is unfurling and then Volcano is sucking

back into the ocean as a giant hole and perry

perry comes up from the giant hole. Oh there

there you are. Yeah This giant hole from the

depths of hell peels open the earth and out comes

a platypus. Yes, that's right If that doesn't

tell you there's something wrong if that doesn't

ring a red bell or flag or warnings of some sort

then there's a problem Yeah I just everything

about this was really really cool. Candice had

a nice time the guys. Hey, you got Phineas out

there Hey in 10 20 32 30. We're not sure We're

not sure if there's a name for whatever else

he does. That's right I think the coolest part

of what Phineas did though is when Buford first

comes in strata He's gonna try to van stomp him.

Yeah his Buford's last name is van stomp It's

a hologram And I'm like, oh, that's just genius.

That's the hologram. Yeah, you know, because

why actually surf when you can, you know. Well,

he is surfing. He's just distracting Buford.

Anyway, what are you going to rate Lon Nome Beach

Party of terror? I want to give it a five. Same

here just so happy with this episode and honestly

if this could have been the second episode I

would have I would have been happy with it Yeah,

absolutely. I mean this episode was just awesome.

Everything in it is just so cool. Yeah Absolutely.

the crap out of him until I punched Bob in the

face a couple times. Wow, good lord. Talk about

innuendos. Don't be smacking your bopper out.

Your whole train of thought disappears and you

have no idea what you're talking about. Alright,

I really dug both of these episodes. I thought

it was kind of cool seeing the differences in

what they're doing each day. Doofenshmirtz schemes

are always gonna be half brained and half witted

and everything else, but they've got to get better

I mean, they really have got to get better. I

think that a goodly chunk of what makes doofenshmirtz

so lovable isn't so much as Schemes schemes that

are bad. It's the backstory Yeah, this is where

they introduce the backstory and just and you're

thinking wow, this is really weird uh... later

on you know he basically says uh... you know

you can't be a good film without your backstory

you know what what's your backstory if you don't

have a backstory that you can't you know where's

all yours your motivation well you know the funny

thing is is that uh... this episode does actually

come back uh... the long -known thing comes back

also No, no, no, yeah, I know it does but I'm

saying that The fact of where his look like there's

a whole episode dedicated to the story of what

happened to long gnome nine seven six five four

or whatever it It actually does have a number.

That's not the number that it is I'm not looking

it up what it is, but there is an actual Storyline

based around I think it's like Father's Day or

his dad's birthday or something special long

no Yeah I don't know. All right. Yeah, sure.

We'll get to that. Yep. Absolutely. All right.
