About this Episode

Neil and Mike examine four episodes of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show: "Mario and Joliet," "Too Hot to Handle," "Hooded Robin and His Mario Men," and "20,000 Koopas Under the Sea." They discuss the show's habit of adapting classic stories, critique the animation and audio quality, and share their thoughts on the live-action segments.

Hey, paisanos! It's the Super Mario Bros. Super

Show! Hello and welcome to the la - episode of

pixels in the nation i am one of the hostage

and i can join me is to use mister do and that's

what a cello not here and of course we're doing

more of the super mario brothers super show uh...

we have four more episodes uh... today and uh...

Wow for those of you who listened to last week's

episode I nearly choked to death at the end of

the show From what we have to review this week

is oh my god I am sorry I'm sorry if people tuned

into this podcast thinking that we were going

to be kind to this as I said last week what the

fuck was I thinking as a nine -year -old watching

this because When we did the introduction episode

last year and when we did episode one back on

June 21st of this year my whole thing was It's

Mario from the games in the cartoon form. This

is going to be awesome 20 years later roughly

20 25 years later somewhere around there I think

I tried to warn you You probably did, but we've

started this journey. We might as well finish

it. We only have nine... Oh, God. We had to do

a countdown to episode 15, which is the series

recap for Super Show. We have nine episodes left

of the podcast before we switch to Legend of

Zelda. Well, Zelda will be short. so yeah um

anything you want to bring up before we get into

the episodes um i don't think so all right let's

go ahead and get into the first episode of the

day after this wrench wrench screwdriver screwdriver

Wreck! Wreck! Sorry, Wreck! Wreck! Stranger!

Stranger! Stranger! Who are you? Someone from

the past! You don't remember me? Are you kidding?

Come on! Mario! Mario! Come on! Luigi! You don't

recognize me? You don't see the family resemblance

family I'm the son no one ever mentioned for

fear bringing grief to our dear mama I'm your

long -lost brother All right, first up tonight

is fake bro, which was the live -action segment

a Schemer played by Vic Dunlap in order to get

rich quick pretends to be Mario and Luigi's missing

brother Well, I will say one thing about the

live -action segment. I'm glad they're actually

getting other actors and not just Dressing Mario

up in another different costume. Oh, yeah to

play the long -lost brother So cuz at first I

honestly thought it was Captain Louie get like

I thought they were cutting around him at first

like showing Mario and then showing the brother

and I thought they were cutting between them

to Say that hey, this isn't the same scene because

it's the same freaking person, but it's not Yeah,

you mean like the over -the -shoulder shot? Yeah,

yeah, the over -the -shoulder or yeah, yeah,

pretty much. But no, it's not. The line -of -action

segment was alright this time around. And again,

at least it's, you know, a different actor and

not them in drag or anything. For the animated

short, we have Mario and Joliet. Guess they can't

use the name Juliet They can it's they're being

nerds So the basic premise for this one Romano

and Juliet are unable to get married due to the

feud going on between their fathers Which Cooper

has secretly started episode is obviously based

on Romeo and Juliet the featured song was that

some more Dean Martin, oh my god Now I see why

Shout Factory couldn't get the rights for the

music. Holy crap. Was he still alive at this

point? Maybe that's what killed him. Damn, that's

so wrong, dude. Yes, he was. He died Christmas

Day, 1995, so he was still alive during that.

Ladies and gentlemen, you heard it here first.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show killed Dean

Martin. I'm sorry that he was alive to see this.

Alright. Let's go ahead and try to find some

fire. Now our fathers hate each other, and will

never let us marry. We don't know what to do!

Well, as their official princess, maybe I can

do something to stop this. So we are looking

for some fire flowers. And the first thing I

thought of was Romano, as in Ray Romano, really.

Nobody loves Raymond. Deborah! Oh my god! Ladies

and gentlemen, Ray Romano is here in the studio

with us. And I'm here too! And I do what I did

like about this episode which there isn't much

I have way more negative notes than I do positive

but I Did like that the Koopa Troopa used his

shell as a shield I thought that was awesome

Because you don't often see them do that like

to this point in the show You just see the Koopa

Troop is just standing there waiting to get hit

by fire flowers or fire power. You know, you

don't often see them being smart minions. No,

they're usually just standing around being idiots

and saying dumb things. Yeah. There was one particular

scene where the heroes are writing down a door.

down a flight of stairs and you see them all

get out of the way and the way it's animated

is really cute it's like the funniest side gag

in the entire episode just kind of flatten themselves

up against the wall it's really you know yeah

that was so great anything else that you liked

um let's see uh well i i did make reference to

the annette funitello joke which which was Cause

me to smirk a little so I'll count that as a

good as a good thing But otherwise, oh I know

I like that they had kind of kind of like a classical

painting style look for some of the interior

shots of of one of the families homes and then

you know, it's it ships Perspective and you see

that the people standing around are just paintings

like propped up on cardboard or something mmm

yeah no it's uh yeah I mean the animation in

this and it was really really good in this one

which is kind of weird because overall the episode

itself kind of sucks so let's get this stopping

on some Goombas decree I order this feud ended

Romano and Joliet are going to be married now

shake on it all right ladies and gentlemen we're

gonna be stomping on some goombas oh my god Romeo

and Juliet oh I feel like I'm back in school

watching the boring film, you know, the one with

without Claire Danes as Juliet. Claire Danes.

No, but seriously, honestly, I remember I don't

know if it was middle school or high school.

I remember them showing us the original Romeo

and Juliet in school. I remember seeing that

and I was so fucking bored. And this is basically.

Same thing, except it's done even worse than

what that film was. Well, it could be worse.

It could be the one that was done with Leonardo

DiCaprio. Well, that's the one I mentioned. I

said I'm, you know, that was the one that that

I thought was better than. Oh, OK. That's the

one with Claire Danz. Yeah. The one I'm talking

about is the original original one that they

I'll have to look it up on Wiki later. Okay,

excuse me for my confusion here, but it confuses

the hell out of me. How many freaking lands are

there in the Mushroom Kingdom? Not even King

Randor ruled the entire planet of Eternia. It

just... There's... I don't know. I know it's

convenient for the plot and all that stuff and

whatever else, but it's like, holy crap. Because

if you look at this game, if you look at this

cartoon as a compilation of both Super Mario

1 and 2, there's what? 15 worlds between the

two games. There's 8 in the first one and 7 in

the second. Right? Yeah, if you... Yeah, pretty

much. So really there should only be 15 lands

and by this time in the in the show's run. We've

seen so many damn different lands It's like oh,

I wish it was a little bit more faithful to the

game Wait, oh you're gonna love this. You're

gonna plots after I say this wait Koopa selling

weapons to both sides. This reminds me of an

old quit this on journal entry Yes, I have officially

tied Super Mario Bros. Super Show to Transformers

Generation 1, the Quintesson Journal from Season

3. As I predicted on Facebook, folks, Neil has

just dropped a mic and walked away. I'm just

shaking my head. Oh my god. And seriously, how

convenient for the plot that Joliet's bouquet

was fire flowers. Yeah. What didn't you like

about this one? It's kind of it's another one

of these episodes where it's just just them taking

a classic story and inserting the Mario characters

into them into it. And, you know, I'd say some

of the animation is kind of wonky, like. Don't

want to I don't want to nitpick like all the

animation errors But there was there's one that

always kind of bugs me and it seems to be a deep

problem it's you know when they were escaping

the the tower and they're on that door that has

the barbells for wheels and The background is

panning the wrong way because they're kind of

looking back at the at the castle and It makes

it look like they're like they're riding toward

the castle when they're supposed to be riding

away Yeah Basically, what is that a flip screen?

It's not even a flip screen I think what happened

is that the overseas animation didn't understand

that the characters were looking backwards So

they had it panning the wrong direction and then

nobody bothered to correct it Yeah, they could

have flipped that I mean that well The reason

why yeah, the reason why I asked you if it was

a flip screen is because I noticed and people

have pointed this out to me if you look at It's

the episode in Justice League Unlimited the return

for a mezzo comes back When they fire when the

lanterns fire all their rings and when the javelins

fire all their stuff in the closing credits of

Justice League Unlimited That that image of of

that scene is basically flopped is basically

flip -flopped to where it's backwards in the

credits So that's why I asked you if it was a

flip screen This episode is just bad it really

is it There are good ways to do you know tell

this story and There I am glad that they didn't

try to pull what love him and leave him pulled

though making Mario the because honestly when

I first before I even watched this and I saw

the title and you know, I Thought that oh crap

they're gonna do the same thing love and love

them and leave them did and they're gonna make

mario romeo and i'm like oh no don't do that

so i'm glad we got a future ray romano copycat

all right let's uh move on to the next episode

plumbers log number eight ten lava land the island

of wacky wacky The great fire guard had promised

to help us save the Mushroom Kingdom from King

Koopa. Up next is an episode that is definitely

too hot to handle. Rimshot. There's a rimshot

happen, you really need one. The live action

clip. Oh, the live action clip was awesome. It

was so hilarious. For this one, Time Out Luigi.

Luigi buys a watch that runs backwards from a

mysterious salesperson soon. He does everything

backwards even eating The only reason why I think

this live -action segment is so cool is simply

because of the very beginning when the episode

opens and She's like oh, it's ten dollars. I'll

give you a five. How about four? It's basically

pawn stars before pawn stars was pawn stars is

what this is The whole bartering thing. The cartoon

plot for Too Hot to Handle is pretty much Koopa

and Fry Guy use a fake volcano god to trick a

tribe of islanders to sacrificing the princess.

The featured song was Hot Hot Hot by Buster Poindexter.

Didn't I see this movie with Tom Hanks and Meg

Ryan? Joe versus the volcano I Don't know for

a second there. I thought you were maybe talking

about you've got mail or I've seen this plot

so many times. I think I think there was even

a Garfield episode. That was this The one where

they they drove the car into the volcano, but

anyway, that's not this cartoon Yeah, no, that's

not this cartoon at all What did you think of

the the plot of the cartoon? Just that it was

Just what I said it was I've seen this before

so it's it's It's just another one of these classic

type stories that they threw what they throw

Mario in and give give the Mario twist to it

Yeah And we have another episode where Mario

is eating it. Yeah No, I Swear like is Okay,

you know nowadays I know I need to get out and

exercise because I'm not in the best shape in

the world But I usually you know I'll have like

usually like crackers throughout the day or something

and I'll eat too deep like I'll eat lunch only

dinner, but you know throughout the day I'll

like snack on crackers or you know chips or something

throughout the day that like if I need something

to eat but you know i'm not constantly like mario

is constantly eating i'm surprised and of course

this will actually come up i think it's next

week where he does turn into a nine thousand

pound person um but uh it just it just watching

the show now just every time i see him eat just

just makes my insides just curl up and want to

die because holy crap Like I honestly don't remember

like watching this as a kid. I don't remember

him eating that much I Honestly don't like I

remember being a part of the show, but I don't

remember. Oh my god It's like 60 % of the episodes

just end with him taking out. I know All right,

let's get to the I will say that there are two

saving graces for this episode. Fry Guy is awesome,

that is all. Yeah, Fry Guy, he's been on the

show before but I think this is his first...

Like, time to shine. Yeah, first time to shine.

And he should because he is one of the major

bosses in Mario 2. He's a bastard is what he

is. Yes, he's very much so. And... Pineapple

Day keeps the shy guys away. Oh god. I liked

it, I thought it was funny. I was expecting them

to use the vegetables from the game, like have

animated versions of the giant vegetables that

you pull up in Super Mario 2. Well I think there

are pineapples in the game, or something that's

very much like those. Yeah, like I've said before

in the show I Never as a kid playing that game.

I played levels one two three and four. I never

got past four four is kind of a That requires

some real thumb work Yeah, and the princess the

flying princess is what it requires so Anything

you liked about this one when King Koopa is escaping

he jumps into one of the bird masks And that's

the first time I've seen that in the show thus

far. The bird mask from Mario 2, that is. Oh,

wow. Huh, interesting. All right, we are going

to go stomp on some numbers. Those pitiful plumbers

are falling hook line and plunger for my plan

to trap the princess. Let's stomp on some goombas

wow the live -action clip at the end got super

strange It got super strange The funny thing

was is Mario actually understood Luigi backwards

doc They think Mario's the only one I mean I

could pick it out It took me like a half second.

I was like, okay, I understand what you're saying.

That's pretty much all I wrote down. It wasn't

like Mario and Juliet where something just stuck

out to me to the point where, oh my god, this

is hard. Too hard to handle. It's not great,

but it wasn't the worst episode we've talked

about. No. Don't really have any major negative

points on it other than it's kind of a Just kind

of an average episode nothing really special.

Yeah, so let's move on to the next episode Number

203 we were in the middle of Sherwood Forest

and we were lost my mushroom paisano maybe it's

time to get a new map you won't need it when

you're going hunted robin with my trusty quarter

staff actually it's a buck and a quarter quarter

staff but i'm not telling him that Up next, ladies

and gentlemen, is Hooded Robin and his Mario

Man. Okay, can we just stop and just review Robin

Hood Daffy? Because that's so much better than

this. Oh my god. Especially when he starts doing

the thing with the staff and it keeps hitting

him in the beak. Thrust, turn, parry. I forget

everything else he says, but yeah, no, I... Alright,

so... Wait, where is this episode? Holy crap.

Is this not... Oh, here, okay, yeah, it... It's

here. I got tripped up because the regular Wikipedia

article lists them in the aerodate order. I keep

getting tripped up because LOZ 13. I'm like,

what the fuck? Where is LOZ? Oh, Zelda, right.

Hooded Robin and his Mario Man, the live action

segment was Flower Power. A taste of spaghetti

sauce with seeds in it causes Luigi to grow fruits

and vegetables out of his butt. Oh, I can't even

finish the sentence. They, you know, you said

it last week. I'll say it again this week. They

put these guys through so many strange things.

Like, it was cool when Magic Johnson showed up

in the mirror. It was cool. It was awesome when

Sergeant Slaughter showed up and, you know, basically,

you know... GI Joe them to death. It was cool

when Nicole Eggert show some of these guests

that they've gotten later in this series is just

like really And sometimes it's so lazy that people

can't even come they just call somebody I Just

oh God in the live -action segment about the

Luigi growing plants out of his orifices. Oh

God, yeah So Hooded Robin and his Mario Men.

Mario's group teams up with Hooded Robin to reclaim

all the gold coins that Koopa stole from a village.

Episode, of course, is based on Robin Hood. Featured

song was Rockin' Robin by Bobby Day. Well, wait.

Okay, wait a second. Ninety. I wonder this aired.

This aired... October 16th, 1989. Bobby day passed

away July 27th 1990. So yeah, he probably did

see This on television even I don't even know

if the guy watched television, but I'm saying

like he probably heard his song. Oh Boy, I heard

the house band cover his song Oh boy. Let's try

to... Do you have any thoughts on the overall

plot? Because I just don't know what to say about

it. Kind of dumb, honestly. Yeah, it would almost

be better if we review Robin the Daffy, because

as I said, that was so much better than this.

I'm not gonna... Don't join me, I'll join you.

Say hello to Friar Duck. Let's get to the fire

flowers. Surprisingly, I actually have a couple

of good thoughts about this. So for fire flowers,

uh... Hooded Robin, huh? Why isn't he wearing

a hood? Yeah But I do like that they incorporated

the they finally You know, we've we you know,

we started the series Way back when where they

were using drain pipes as as warp zones like

specifically Brooklyn bound though the plumber

said all this is the the war drain to get back

to brooklyn that you know they were using the

the pipes from from the original game and now

finally they introduced the potion doors from

super mario two i love that i thought that was

awesome use potion couple times or but yeah i'm

noticing in a lot more than zero yeah i'm uh...

yeah i'm sure they did like that i think there

was one last week work who be used it but i didn't

actively see him throw a potion i just saw a

door appear or he might have had one of the ones

which obviously don't come into play for another

year or so for mario three but uh... did you

like anything about this one falls to you the

ones he did have one of the scope of soviet yet

mario receptors indian indian those that they

really caught my eye otherwise let's go stomp

on some So we're gonna stomp on some goombas.

The child in Sherwood or Sherwood or whatever

the hell they're calling the thing. The voice

for the child. It's so high -pitched I thought

my eardrum was gonna break. Some horrible voice

acting. It's you know you said it before and

I know listeners are probably getting tired of

us saying this it's just Mario put in this setting

but really That's all these cartoons are and

I think honestly at this point We're more so

meant to just enjoy like just nothing to end

like nothing in here to me at least I didn't

catch any bad animation errors I didn't catch

any off moments. I didn't catch any what the

fuck moments as far as Holy crap. Why are they

doing it? It wasn't like Mario and Juliet earlier

at all It just wasn't I don't know what did you

have anything you didn't like about this one

uh? Well other than what I said the bland I thought

was kind of a dumb episode, but I I noticed some

animation which is in fact. I noticed a lot of

audio problems it was there were there were instances

of wrong characters speaking like There's a part

where Koopa is speaking toad's lines, and there

are times when their mouth is flapping and no

one's talking, and it seems like there's a lot

of sound effects missing. I meant to go back

and see the broadcast version and see if that's

any different, but I didn't have time. In fact,

there's one point, I don't know if it's like

this on the DVD, but there's one point where

the song kind of cuts out in the middle of the

scene. You still hear the sound effects and then

the song comes back Yeah, yeah it does on it

did on the DVD I didn't really notice it and

you know, I Don't know. It's it's one of those

things with the sound effects sometimes like

Certain ones of the classic sound effects if

they're not used properly that's just it just

sounds so wrong and You know, I don't have any,

I don't have my notes on this, but is this the

one where they made like a fry girl to... Yes,

yes. Yeah, that was weird because in order to

make the fry girl, Princess Peach climbs into

the room where Fry Guy is patrolling in front

of the gold coins and she's right there and he

doesn't see her. And I'm like, what? Yeah, yeah,

so animation glitches all over the place sound

glitches all over the place black episode Let's

move on to the last episode of today's podcast.

Oh boy I understand you have bats in your basement.

Right, I understand you're in bad need of a tan.

So finally up today we have 20 ,000 Koopas Under

the Sea and the live -action segment was Vampire

Until Ready. Was this another one of the live

-action segments that... I don't know, maybe

the people on Wiki... Regular we could be or

just lazy and didn't put anything in here for

it But I did see this on and it's basically Dracula's

back. Yeah I was gonna say is this the same guy

who was in an earlier episode? I think it's supposed

to be It looks like the same actor. Yeah, it

does It was it was a live -action segment that

was just like again, they're not like Everybody

says oh they had all these sports stars and all

these wrestling stars and all this and all that

and everything else When are we gonna get to

it? Cuz like I said, I don't know if I said earlier

this episode or last week in episode 5 When the

hell are we gonna get to it cuz so far we've

only had Slaughter Johnson and Eggert as far

as like people I actually know I don't know as

far as the cartoon Cooper scares a seaside town

into making him their ruler by using a mechanical

sea monster to scare them. The episode is obviously

based on 20 ,000 links under the sea. The featured

song, Splish Splash, by Bobby Darin. I think

I've seen this episode of Scooby -Doo. I know,

right? There literally was an episode of Scooby

-Doo with a mechanical sea monster. Yeah. Well,

yeah. Yeah, there was. But anyway. Not to say,

not to sound really, really down and in the dumps,

but Bobby Darin died in 1973, so at least he

didn't live to see a cover of his song. In Mario.

Yeah, in Mario. This just feels all kinds of

wrong to me for them to do this. It really does,

because... everyone at least everyone I know

enjoys the book and most everyone likes the movie

at least from people that I've talked to but

like it again they're just putting people they're

just putting the characters in these situations

and it just doesn't it just doesn't play out

for me as far as plots they're they're just there

Like, I don't know. What about you? I don't know.

I didn't think that this episode was anything

special, but it did make me laugh in a couple

spots just because the captain character is basically

a female Popeye. Yeah. And her boat looks like

olive oil's shoe. Oh my god. You know, I'm already

listing off the fire flowers here, so I'm just

going to get these out of the way. Yeah, go ahead,

because I don't have anything, so we were almost

going to skip it, but go ahead and list your

ones. The one that made me laugh out loud is

Mario, Peach, and Luigi are all captured inside

the mechanical sea monster, and Toad breaks in,

and he's about to open the door, and they all

turn their head because they can hear him squeaking.

The dog toys squeak they hear him approaching

it and they all turn their heads See I knew it

wasn't just me Yeah, I just down here is that

Mario and Luigi that is to say Captain Lou and

Danny Wells actually sound like they were in

the studio together in this episode because they're

not out of sync when they speak at the same time

this time. Interesting. That would be pretty

cool if they were. Because they seem to have

chemistry in this episode, which is something

that is hard to get when you're recording separately.

Yeah, that's very sure. Ensemble casts are always

the better way to go, but sometimes companies

don't like that. Let's go ahead and get to the

goombas cuz... wow. They'll never make me their

king now! Good! So, I'll just have to sail the

cupolas back to Happy Harbor and wreck the place!

Uh -oh! Not so good! But, in the meantime, I'll

make you three my galley slaves! This is awful!

Alright, we are going to stomp on some goombas

and normally I don't mind pirate stuff in general.

You know, I can enjoy it to a certain extent,

but holy crap is that captain annoying as all

hell. She is. She's just so annoying. And I'm

sorry, but this is just, this to me, doing a

parody of this story. This way the way that they've

done it and inserting these characters into it

just It's just insulting to the original material.

I think it just I don't I just don't like it

at all. I Don't know what didn't you like about

this one? Um Just some weird just the weird thing

is how they adapted the video game Content like

the star man. I think I mentioned this before

but Star man and the fire flower are treated

as though they're the same thing in this cartoon

and they find they find starmen under the sea

and Yeah, I'm not gonna go into the song through

but they find the starmen and That gives them

firepower and I'm like no It's not how it works

folks It's not how it works at all and yeah Oh

man. The end of the episode is kind of weird.

Koopa's mechanical monster crashes into the town

and it wrecks a couple buildings and everyone's

standing around going, yay, yay. It's funny the

fact that there's been massive property damage.

They're happy that Koopa was at least beaten.

I was like, okay, I guess. At least it didn't

end with Mario eating So it gets one point for

that we're gonna go to Sebastian singing a certain

song and then some other ads and we'll come back

after this Like animation? Come listen to Animation

and to recap this four -episode review podcast,

Mario and Juliet, what do you give it? I'll give

it a two. It was amusing in a couple spots, but

it wasn't really terrible, but it wasn't really

good either. So, two. I'm gonna give it a one.

I just... Too many conveniences for the plot,

like the fire flowers being the bouquet and other

stuff. What about Too Hot to Handle? What do

you give that? I'll give it a one. It was kind

of a bland story and not much in the way of redeeming

qualities. You know, I'll give it another viewing

if I... If I at least think it's funny, even

if it's unintentionally funny, but this one is

just kind of not, no. I'm gonna give it a two

because I really like Fry Guy. He was awesome

in this. I thought he was really cool. Who did

Robin and his Mario man? I'll give it a zero.

I didn't like the episode. It's got so many animation

audio problems. Yeah, it does. It really does.

Not a very good episode at all. What were they

doing that week? Yeah, it gets a zero from me

too. Like I said, you want a really cool Robin

Hood parody, go haunch Robin Hood daffy folks.

20 ,000 Koopas under the sea, what do you give

it? I'll give it a two. It was funny in some

spots. Maybe unintentionally, but it was at least

a little amusing. Yeah, I'll give it a two as

well. It doesn't deserve anything more than that.

And again, I don't think that story should have

been adapted into this cartoon. It just doesn't

fit for me at all. All right. Thank you for joining
