About this Episode

TFG1Mike and TV's Mr. Neil continue their review of the Super Mario World animated series, covering six episodes: Ghosts R Us, King Scoopa Koopa, The Night Before Cave Christmas, Born to Ride, Party Line, and Gopher Bash. The hosts critique heavy-handed messaging, continuity issues with game elements, and character consistency across these installments.

Super Mario Super Mario Super Mario World Super

Mario World It's a block from the past In Super

Mario World You've got to move fast Mario and

Luigi Are doing what they can Yoshi and the Princess

Are giving them a hand Super Mario World Super

Mario World It's a blast from the past! In Super

Mario World! It's a blast! Hello and welcome

to the latest episode of Pixels in the Animation.

I am one of your hosts, TFJ and Megan. Joining

me in this epic journey is Stevie's Mr. Nail.

Blarg. Yeah. Too much rat goo. Okay folks because

we didn't want to drag it out and we want to

get over the Mario cartoons fairly fast in this

episode We are going to be talking about the

next six episodes of Super Mario World kill me

now How we are going to do this is we're gonna

talk about three at a time so It saves me on

the editing. I'm gonna I'm gonna make a a mashed

up clip of clips from each of the each of the

six cartoons and we'll just have one clip for

that discussion clip for the seconds three discussion

bam done might as well they all have the same

score oh come on now Now, it's been a while since

we were able to do feedback, but our buddy, our

listener, Patrick Moore, had sent us an email.

He says, hello, Peter. It's me again. After writing

about my thoughts on Captain America, I decided

to do one on Super Mario Bros. 3. Now, this is

a little late for us, because we record these

in advance. The show when I saw it was funny

and great, but after hearing your thoughts on

the episodes now, they do look kind of stupid

in storytelling. At least Mario isn't thinking

about food in this series. Now that's Luigi's

job. The Koopa Kids may be brats in this series,

and they are annoying as crap. I'm not saying

that they're good villains. and their voices

sound like chalk scratching when they sing. I

don't mind Megamove playing on the DVD versions,

but not when the lip -sinkers are singing on

screen. The voice actors do a great job in this

series, but the writers who do some of these

episodes just don't have the feel of a good Mario

story. He goes on to say that he thinks it's

more of a fan fiction than anything else. He

does agree with me. Super Koopa is a great ending

to the series and made Toad useful in his last

appearance ever. He says he remembers when he

saw the anti -gravity episode that was done before

in the original TMNT cartoon. Let's see here.

He goes on to ask if we're going to be covering

the new Nickelodeon cartoon Rabbids Invasion,

which apparently is based off the Rayman video

games that it's airing on Nickelodeon right now.

No, Patrick, sorry, we're not. No, no, no. No,

no, no. Fixes and the Animation is strictly classic

and old video game cartoons. uh... and he goes

on to ask us about earthworm jim which we did

say in episode thirty seven we are going to be

covering that as well so thank you so much patrick

for uh... sending in the email he does uh...

he does give peter uh... he does give uh... He

does give our reviews, our section of Mario 3

a five star for the funny jokes of the two of

us and can't wait for Super Mario World. Well,

we're in the middle of it. Oh, brother. What

you talking about, Willis? That's what I think

of. Alright, so we're gonna get into the first

three episodes after this. Where could that lost

cave kid be? Seems like we've been searching

the Enchanted Forest for hours. Don't worry,

Princess. We'll find little Luke Tarsoon. It's

almost past his bedtime. Creepity spookity scary.

Don't you hope no ghost's Enchanted Forest? Don't

be afraid, little buddy. There's not a ghost

in sight. Right, Luigi? That's right, Mario.

Yes! I thought you were a ghost! Watch out, Luigi!

It's the most terrible Koopa wizard in the entire

dino world! Wisenheimer! That's Wisenheimer!

Uka! Yoshi boogie! Yoshi's running away! Hey,

what's the big idea, wizard -wise guy of scaring

everybody like that? This is my enchanted forest.

Whoever enters it becomes my prisoners. Now!

plunge yourselves into that warp pipe no way

that warp pipe leads to a haunted house oh yeah

make us we're not afraid of you how do you feel

about bob arms those we're not so crazy about

Neither do you unless you're in trouble You've

got some explaining to do. No time. Let's go

bed like good cave kid. Wait for Santa to bring...

Presents? Haven't you opened all of Santa's presents

already? Me sorry. Uktar not been good. Not been

good? Uktar been bad? Yoshi no angel either.

Uktar promise be good cave boy for rest of life.

Cross Uktar heart. And cross Uktar's fingers

too. How Santa know? Santa was a bambino, er,

a boy, once himself, Uhtar. Get out of here.

All right, into bed, Uktar, before Yoshi loses

his wings. We still have presents to deliver

all over Dome City. Me no, Uktar, bad, cause

Santa big trouble. No deserve present. But, Uktar,

thankful Santa saved me from dinosaur, that present

enough. Why, Uktar, this isn't like you. Course,

if Santa won't leave Uktar... First up are the

in this section of this episode it's Ghosts are

us King scoopa koopa and the night before cave

Christmas for ghosts are us when a magic what

nothing I just all three of these episodes When

a Magi Koopa abducts Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool,

and Oogtar, or Rattgoo, Yoshi must brave a haunted

forest to rescue them. On the syndicated series

Super Mario All -Stars, the entire scene where

Yoshi faces the Big Boo was cut due to the scene

being too long. And obviously King Koopa isn't

even in this episode. Okay. I know that they

have to adapt the game to fit a cartoon format,

but Jesus Christ, follow along with continuity.

Yoshi cannot eat fireballs. He cannot eat the

par - If he - Oh wait, yes he can. Yeah, he can.

Damn. They did - Shit. I didn't remember that.

That's right. Oh god. Nearly just shot myself

in the foot. Um, yeah, when I was watching this,

I was like, oh god, he can't eat the plants,

but apparently he can. You're right. Uhtar is

so annoying, he might, he might, at this point

in the series, even be more annoying than Toad,

and that's a huge job. I'm waiting for him to

just pull the mask off and show that he is Toad.

It was me the whole time! god reminds me of broomstick

bunny oh man um this episode like i i like that

they are highlighting the game but oh here's

the problem the magi koopas were never in the

ghost houses right at least not the ones that

i've been in they were in the fortresses Yeah,

they were in the fourth, they were in the third,

fourth, they were in Lenny Koopa's castle, or

Larry Koopa's castle, one of them, no, I don't

know, one of them damn kids. Lemmy, Lenny, Larry,

Ludwig, whatever. By the way, I'm pretty sure

it's just pronounced Magic Koopa, because if

you call it Magi Koopa, it sounds like it's the

Bible or something. Whatever. But yeah, I mean,

I only ever saw them in... Castle number three

in the vanilla dome, so They were never really

in the haunted houses the ghost houses. I did

like how they always forgot his name and Purposefully

made him angry. I thought that was cool. I was

I do. Oh good I like that they made him Jewish

sounded like yeah, you sound like Jackie Mason

Hey, you always get my name wrong. Yeah I do

like the voice for the wizard. I thought that

was a really cool voice. What do you or don't

you like about Ghosts R Us? Well, I've only got

one thing written down here, and it's the fact

that when Yoshi eats the Wiggler, it genuinely

has a terrified look on its face. Like, what

have I gotten myself into? That's pretty much

it. Good for don't like I just have a tar Wow,

that's crazy. Um, yeah tar isn't You know He

just is He's probably the worst ten -year -old

on the planet at this point honestly, all right

King Scoopa Koopa, Luigi, Yoshi, and the cave

people get addicted to eating Koopa's new fast

food, which gives them unwanted side effects.

Dun dun dun. This whole episode is nightmare

fuel. Yeah, Luigi as a chicken looks... Always

I could think of it. This is insulting to what

I'm gonna reference this to always I can think

of is he's not a man. He's a chicken boo Is chicken

boo for man of 80x Compare this to a good cartoon.

No, I don't but that's what I'm saying It's like

that's the only thing I could think of as soon

as I saw Luigi. I'm like chicken boo had a horrible

horrible offspring home I Will say that it took

them a long ass time to get back to being you

know a food focused episode Unfortunately had

to be a heavy -handed anti fast food episode.

Yeah true I Don't want I don't want social messages

in my cartoon the whole time. I'm like Someone

throw a pie. Come on. I want funny cartoons.

Not this. I don't want to be preached at. Yeah.

Absolutely. Yeah. I mean, I kind of like it.

it's not like my most favorite and it really

isn't and it's not that great of an episode but

i kinda like it it was you know fairly game accurate

for what they were doing in this for the most

part uh... i will say this now and i will complain

about it later probably the show doesn't Way

back when we were talking about the star and

Super Mario 3 I mentioned that it just turns

my Mario into fire Mario. Yeah At least here,

you know later on I think they use a star in

these episodes and at least at least it flashes

white and blue and you know, at least it Least

it has some sort of visual effect of what the

star actually does in the games, right? But my

complaint here is Yoshi When Yoshi gets his wings,

he turns blue. I wish they would have made a

blue Yoshi. Oh, wow. Well, one last thing about

the whole evil fast food thing. It drives me

crazy that so many cartoons have to do this.

Whenever somebody wants to make money, they're

evil. Whereas I thought it was done much better

in Austin Powers when you had... you had starbucks

as the front of the evil organization and even

then they were asking well why don't we just

run starbucks yeah because we're making more

money doing starbucks than we are trying to take

over the world so i wish they would do that but

it's just oh god oh what about the dr mario reference

i thought that was i want to put my foot through

the screen no come on now that was a little hilarious

Alright, so the final one in this section of

this episode, the night before cave Christmas,

Mario and Luigi introduce Christmas to the cave

people in order to encourage kindness, but King

Koopa steals all of Santa Mario's toys. Is it

fair to say that He -Man and She -Ra did this

thing better? Yes. Yeah, it's basically the same

thing. It's like, Christmas comes to a weird

land that never had Christmas before. The bad

guys don't understand what Christmas is. Well,

Koopa does because he's been in other Christmas

episodes, but his kids don't. They're like, what's

Christmas? Who's the Santa Claus? Must be a wimp

who only gives presents to the good boys and

girls, you know, that whole routine. Yeah. Yeah,

it's basically the She -Ra, the He -Man and She

-Ra special all over again. Done in 11 minutes.

So what's better, the long version or this? I

would rather watch the He -Man one. At least

it's got funny moments. And it has the Skeletor

face turn. Wow. But this episode had... One thing

I just drives you crazy Koopa had a bond moment

in this where he sets he sets oogtar up to die

He has him over a pit tied to a vine and the

vines being slowly burned away by a candle and

then before it before the trap can Can go off

he leaves I Know this is a lazy cartoon, but

come on. This is lazy for you guys Yeah, yep

And you know, it doesn't surprise me that they

made Koopa the Grinch. I mean after all he is

the right color As much as I hate Yoshi's baby

talk I do oh No, this was rat goo as much as

I hate the backwards ass cave baby talk stuff

Santa Mario need to go on diets. Oh god. I like

that you got the Uhtar and Yoshi mixed up because

they are basically the same character. Kinda.

They're both idiots except the one has an eating

problem. Ain't that the truth. Alright we are

going to take a quick break. You're gonna hear

the next audio clip for the next three episodes

and we'll be back after this. wrench check pliers

check hey nice technique just a little something

i picked up from watching this old castle on

tv hey if this works we can install a shower

let's just worry about getting a sink in first

it's a piece of cannoli princess watch this trouble

at every turn see the cave people are always

hurting themselves always having accidents I

saw what happened show me where it hurts Yoshi

good thing band -aids come in four sizes small

medium and dinosaur that should make your dinosaur

feel better Yoshi what we really need is an emergency

number to call what do you think guys the field's

fine but I don't think the cave people are wild

about being farmers especially when all they

have to do when they're hungry is reach out and

grab some grub All right in this final segment

of the podcast this time around we have Born

to ride party line and gopher bash Born born

to ride after getting scolded by Mario Luigi

Yoshi joins up with an evil dinosaur biker gang

But Yoshi tells Mario Luigi and told still that

he is joining a social group Not a gang and obviously

Koopa is absent yet again All as I said on this

was all I have is oh damn seriously This is a

Yoshi running away episode and then he joins

a biker gang really seriously Don't get me wrong,

you know Running away from your problems is never

gonna solve them and you should never run away

from home but it's just one of those things where

it's like Like you said already today, you know

again there Like, why not? At this point, I would

rather have Koopa try to rob the gold treasury

again. Honestly, seriously. It's like, oh my

god, this entire cartoon is so heavy -handed

with messages. Right. I mean, yeah, this should

not have been an episode. This should have been

like... 30 seconds it should have been Yoshi

starting to run away and then shipwreck shows

up and says hey running away isn't the answer

gee Joe, you know God damn it. Why is this an

episode and then it's like anti gang. Yeah gang

suck, but again with the social messages, you

know, it's like And then I have some something

written here and I don't remember when it happened

in the episode bit I just have written down return

of the horrified wiggler because apparently a

wiggler gets eaten again by Yoshi And again,

it has a horrified face of like oh my god. I'm

getting eaten. I'm gonna die It really is a diss

really is like the most disturbing horrified

phase whenever a wiggler gets eaten by Yoshi

in this cartoon Yeah, now I I've been playing

the game on Super Mario all -stars a lot lately

I'd have to go back and look again, but when

Yoshi eats them in the game, they don't turn

around. He eats them face first, right? I think

you can eat them from either direction. Okay,

because a couple of times that he's eaten the

Wigglers, it's like, wow, why is he eating them

backwards? That makes no sense to me, but whatever.

So we can see their horrified faces as they go

in. Ew. I don't know what's worse, this or a

princess looking like a Kramer turkey. Oh no.

Up next is Party Line. Mario reinvents the telephone

for the cave people, but they soon find themselves

talking on the phone too much. Okay, this is...

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait! Note Tracy

Moore's voice for Princess Toadstool changed

in this episode. Really? Yep, and obviously Koopa's

not here Now you can go. Okay. This is the most

pessimistic show I think I've ever seen I mean

I swear the message of every single episode is

like anytime someone tries to do something nice

or enterprising or something that's you know

makes life more convenient the message is you're

an evil person, or things are going to go wrong,

and you're just going to make things worse, so

don't even try. So Mario and Luigi set up a telephone

system in Dome City, and of course, everything

goes wrong. People are on the phone too much.

They're causing havoc. There's vines everywhere.

The whole city looks ugly. So at the end, they

take it down. They're like, well, we'll go back

to being technologically illiterate. and not

have any uh not have any conveniences and we'll

better we'll be better for it i'm like fuck you

cartoon like yeah with that with that kind of

attitude the anti -enterprising no wonder deep

got sold a cookie jar yeah exactly um yeah i

mean this one all is i You know You know, but

even though this is heavy -handed as soon as

I saw all these people on the phone I'm thinking

this is like what most people are today being

on the internet and whether it's through mobile

phones or or Computers or laptops or tablets

or whatever else? Yeah, but it is kind of technophobic.

I mean, it's like it's like how parents are like

Why are you sitting on your ass all day watching

TV or sitting on the internet? Go read a book.

And it's like, but if you go read a book, you'll

be sitting on your ass anyway. I guess I kind

of understand the sentiment there, but still,

it's kind of splitting hairs. And then they go

and talk about, oh no, that's next week. I'm

sorry. There's another thing coming up. I'm just

glad they didn't do this in the age of the cell

phones, because they would have combined the

wheel episode with this episode and have the

cave people driving while they're talking on

the phone. Yeah. Yeah. They would have. Yeah.

All right. What's next? Oh, gopher bash. Good

lord. Worst title ever. When Luigi teaches the

cave people how to grow their own crops, Cheetzy

gets a group of Monty Moles. Is that really what

they're called? They're called Monty Moles. Oh

my god. So they got the animal wrong. It's not

a gopher, it's a mole. Although what some animal

expert would be like, well you're actually splitting

hairs. I don't know. So Cheatsy gets a group

of Monty Moles to steal the crops. Oh lord. This

is... Just crazy. It really really is just crazy.

You know, it's one of those things where... I

don't know this is one of those episodes where

I understand wanting them to you know grow their

own crops and whatever else and you know learn

for themselves I understand that but like seriously

really that's That's an episode of this show.

Yeah, I mean I'd rather have You know, honestly,

they could have only had what would this show

at 13? They could have had 12 episodes if they

would have taken This one and scoop a Koopa and

combined it into one episode Okay Because you

would have Koopa doing the fast food stuff on

one end you would have Luigi you know on the

other and trying to teach the people to well

it wouldn't be we do have to be somebody else

but i don't i i just told lord these episodes

i i thought i was gonna like some of them and

i do like a few of them but this one uh... uh...

you know they the only good thing about this

is every time the the scenery changes or the

or the action changes that they include all of

the different Mario World themes that are in

the game like when Yoshi starts going after the

berry It's Yoshi's Island theme play as he's

playing as he's running An animation error here

when they pull the crops down They are all one

color like their beats or something or whatever

else yet They have them all when they have them

all down. They are multicolored like corn and

carrots and blah -blah -blah When they were pulling

the vegetables down out of the garden, I felt

like I had seen this cartoon somewhere before.

But I'm pretty sure there's a Looney Tunes cartoon

that's like that. I'm pretty sure Bugs Bunny

did that a couple times where the carrots start

disappearing from the garden and it's Bugs Underground

taking them. There's that one and then there's

the one with Paul Bunyan. where it's a giant,

you know, it's Paul Bunyan's garden and Bugs

makes a mining carrot operation out of it. And

first of all, since you brought up Looney Tunes,

this ties into my last note for this episode.

How dare Yoshi, how dare he use a Looney Tunes

line. This means war. Oh my god. So, we are gonna

take another quick break, come back with final

thoughts and ratings after this. It's action.

the first segment, Ghosts Are Us, King's Koopa

Koopa, and The Night Before Christmas, what are

you giving each of the episodes? Hello? Okay,

you're back. Oh, wow. That sucked. Okay, 54 edit.

We are back and - For the first three episodes

today Ghosts are us King scoopa koopa and the

night before cave Christmas What are you rating

each of the episodes zero zero zero? I'm not

being I'm actually not being funny here. I'm

serious. This is a terrible cartoon I'm gonna

give ghosts are us zero I'm gonna give King Scoopa

Koopa a 2. Because there was part of it that

I did like. And it is one of the ones that I

do always remember seeing as a kid. Because I

think they played this at - Oh my god, I do remember

it now. They did reruns of this episode over

and over and over again. Because, let's face

it, this was, you know, late 80s, early 90s.

This was 91. And in 91 it was like, hey... American

kids are fat. We must fight obesity. And guess

what that means? No more fast food for anybody!

They re -ran this episode, this horrible episode.

Uh -huh. And the night before Cave Christmas,

I'm gonna give a 1. Because it does kind of remind

me of other Christmas specials, but at the same

time... It's not not that great The second half

we have born to ride party line and go for bash

ratings, sir All zeros Wow six zeros in a row

I think it's I think it's been all zeros entire

this entire episode or this entire series this

Super Mario World cartoon You might be right.

I'd have to go back and listen to last week's

episode, but you might be right. For me, Born

to Ride gets a one. Party Line gets a one and

Gopher Bash gets a zero. I mean, I kind of liked

Party Line, and there was a few funny things

in there, but the rest of it is just... So...

It's the social messages. I feel like I'm watching

Captain Planet. Yeah, that's... And that is an

insult. It's an insult to Mario or Captain Planet.
