About this Episode

Tf and TV's Mr. Neil conclude their coverage of The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 by discussing the final five episodes: "Seven Continents for Seven Koopas," "True Colors," "Recycled Koopa," "The Venice Menace," and "Super Koopa." The hosts analyze the writing, the recurring usage of frog suits, and the social messages present in the later episodes, while sharing their final ratings for the series.

It is a legend no one will forget. Everyone thought

King Koopa had left the Mushroom Kingdom. And

then, his Doomship attacked. King Koopa was back,

with the greatest danger ever known. His Koopa

Kings. Using their new superpowers, the Super

Mario Brothers rescued Princess Toadstool and

beat back the evil Koopa family. Get those plumbers!

Hello and welcome to the 40th episode of pixels

in the animation I am one of your host Tf sharing

Mike joining me is TV's Mr. Deal. I'm a Mario.

I'm a gonna ween Mario Kart Yeah, I know what

gave the voices from thank you I was hoping you

were gonna make some sort of Venice reference,

but okay then Yeah, we're here to talk about

the final four cartoons from The Adventures of

Super Mario Bros. 3, those being Seven Continents

for Seven Koopas, True Colors, Recycled Koopa,

okay, five, The Venice Menace, and Super Koopa.

So. i think uh... i am going to be doing the

same thing i did with me it was episode thirty

six or thirty seven we're just going to have

straight discussions i'm not going to break them

up like i did last week with thirty nine uh...

so each episode will just have its own discussion

clip uh... i'm so glad we're almost done with

this series and then no more mario You know,

if we could find two more video game cartoons,

I could... Oh god, if we could find episodes

of Power Team, I would mash Mario together in

only two episodes. Seriously. Alright, so we're

gonna get to the episodes today after this. First

up today is Seven Continents for Seven Koopas.

This is after trapping the Super Mario Brothers

and Toad and the Mushroom World, Koopa orders

his kids each to take over one of Earth's seven

continents. Now where have I heard this plop

before? Oh wait, it's the same as that one other

one where Kootie Pie took over the United States.

Mm -hmm. See... now we know they're running out

of ideas they're ripping off their same a cartoon

in the same season yep and uh honestly this is

also this reminds me of um it reminds me of like

where in the world is Carmen Sandiego i'm not

saying that i'm not trying to disparage that

show but um This really does remind me of Where

in the World is Carmen Sandiego, because you

have all of her agents all over the world, and

she ends up in one... Basically, she has multiple

agents that go all over the world, and she is

the one main villain that is in one or two places

at once or twice. And that's really what I think

Koopa is, even though Koopa's just stuck in Dark

Land the whole damn time in the episode. That's

a pretty apt comparison, because I was going

to compare it to Mario is Missing. which is basically

a rip -off of Where in the World is Coming San

Diego. Wait a minute, Mario is Missing, is that

a new... Mario is Missing was an edutainment

title that came out on PC and there was also

a Super Nintendo board. You play as Luigi and

you go around the world looking for Mario. Yeah,

it's like Where in the World is Mario. Yeah,

so I was gonna say it's kind of like Luigi's

Mansion Only in so far that you play as Luigi.

It's it doesn't play anything like Luigi's Mansion

But I oddly enough daisies in the game for some

reason Anyway, go on in miss in Mario's missing

or Luigi's Mansion in Mario is missing. Oh Interesting.

It would make more sense for her to be in Luigi's

Mansion since, uh, you know, they dated for a

while. Oh wait, nobody likes to think of that

1993 classic. All right, um, as far as good moments

for this one, I... I don't know, I really kind

of like the... For this episode of the podcast,

there are two episodes out of the five that I

really enjoyed. And this is one of them, because

I do kind of like the idea of, you know, seven

continents, seven Koopas, where they can spread

their evil throughout the entire world instead

of just worrying about conquering Brooklyn or,

you know, conquering just one part of the world.

You know, I do kind of like that. And then we

have the princess back in the bathing suit again

Yeah, they really liked her in that bathing suit

didn't they? Yes. Yes, they did See she's not

drawn sexy. She's not drawn well enough to be

sexy in that she looks like a 12 year old She's

she's she's less developed than Raven on the

Teen Titans cartoon oh my god please do not say

anything about tentacles thank you very much

no i didn't say anything about tentacles i'm

just talking about them anyway what anyway um

the plot here is kind of pretty damn good like

i said i mean sure it's standard but at least

it's interesting because you get to see these

kids They're, I mean, we know that they're psychologically

damaged because, well, they're reptiles and they're

Koopa's kids, but they have some whacked out

ideas of what causing mischief really is. Like

even as a kid, when I wanted to cause mischief,

I didn't do half the crap these kids did. It's

like, I don't know. These kids are like beyond

help. What did you like about this one? a crocodile

Dundee cameo. Yes, there was. The ideas of conquering

the seven continents was kind of funny. One was

graffiti -ing the Great Wall of China. Another

one was building a giant, abominable snowman

in the Antarctic so that he could love him and

pet him and call him George. There was no way

I wasn't going to make that reference. Gosh,

it's hot. Turning people into kangaroos, turning

African animals into stuffed animals. Totally

out of the playbook of Skeletor and Cobra Commander.

These plots that make absolutely no sense. Yeah,

kind of. Was there anything you didn't like about

this one? Oh, the fucking frog suits are back.

They just look so stupid. Why are they wearing

frog suits? Can't they swim normally? We already

know they can breathe underwater. We're so the

Super Show established. Let's see. Oh, there

is that shitty version of the song Satisfaction,

which I think was in a different episode, wasn't

it? Mm might have been it's starting to fade.

So that's that's That's pretty much all I got

All right, we're gonna move on to see what kind

of oh god Ladies and gentlemen up next here in

pixels the animation we present to you Cindy

Lauper. We'll be back after this to find our

true colors, Neil. Cookie and Cheatsy use a special

paint to turn all the mushroom people either

red or blue and trick the two colors into hating

each other. Wow, they're desperate for, you know,

messages to teach people. And it's so, I mean,

I know I say this a lot on this show, and you

say it a lot as well, and I'm sure I've said

it in other shows that I do, but this episode

is so fucking standard. I've seen this plot so

many damn times. You get somebody that has a

different opinion or a different something from

somebody else, and then you try to get them to

fight. I mean, you know, that's like, just, you

know, forget about colors, just... Go watch Star

Wars. It's the same damn thing. Two opposing

views fighting each other. It wasn't just opposing

views. This was clearly a racism allegory. It

was, yeah. And I was just, uh, this. I can't

believe they're doing this with Mario. Mm -hmm.

And then they turned Mario blue and Luigi red?

Mm -hmm. Yeah. Oh, God. No. This episode. Just

no. I can't... I have nothing else for this one

because it's just... And it's so obvious that,

you know, Kooky and Cheatsy... First of all,

we're... What is this, like the 20 -something

or other number episode of the series or true

colors is the 24th episode out of 26. You mean

to tell me the previous 23 episodes, Mario and

Luigi don't know the sound of Kuki and Chichi's

voices? I don't know. It's... I don't know. So...

Cartoon stupidity. We are going to move on as

we all get recycled. Into Koopa zombies! Koopa

Kids, clean up this mess so you don't get to

do anything mean for a whole week. You heard

King Dad, get to work. Yeah, I heard him. Did

you hear him? You're a lazy br -br -bully, Bully.

If you don't help us, I ain't gonna tattle. I'm

doing the brain work, Big Mouth. Oh, no! I broke

a nail. This is no job for someone as magnificently

beautiful as I. I thought you were part of the

garbage, Scootypie! Alright, this is war! Eat

this! I hope you're making that jump disappear!

We're on it, King Dad. Presto, no more garbage!

Up next is Recycled Koopa. When the Koopalings

can't get away with dumping their trash in the

Mushroom Kingdom, they warp it all to Brooklyn.

The Koopa garbage is turning the citizens into

Koopa zombies, so Mario and Luigi must figure

out a way to recycle it all and stop Koopa from

turning Brooklyn into Kooplin. Oh, God. My brain

hurts. Ow. So we had one episode that was about

bullying. We had one episode that was about racism,

and now we got environmentalism. Where's Captain

Planet when you're - Yeah, these are Captain

Planet plots. Where's Captain Planet when you

really need him? And it even threw in the message

that was like, we can't use magic to clean this

up, we have to actually work. And then they build

a magic sweeper machine, which was directly out

of another heavy handed cartoon, which was The

Toxic Crusaders. Which I sort of got there was

an episode of that cartoon where they made they

made a street sweeper that just Garbage went

in one side and like flower petals and music

is not how recycling works And that's kind of

what they did here. I'm like but but the message

is shitty It's like It's not how recycling works

the only note I wrote down for this It's people

turning into Koopa zombies. Okay, then First

of all Trash is not DNA coded it just isn't like

You know, I can't take my trash to your house

and then you start turning into what I look like

that I mean You don't know I'm she thanks You

know what I'm saying is like the way that this

episode is written is that the trash because

it is Koopas in the Koopa kids that it has some

weird effect on the humans and They start turning

into I mean, it's a nice little funny gag when

you really think about it trash does not work

like that It just does I was trying to figure

out why that was happening. I guess it's because

the magic got involved or something. I don't

know I Don't know it was just so stupid Yeah,

because the magic because at one point they they

used the magic to sweep up all the garbage and

then the wand itself got got mixed in with the

garbage So I think that's what happened. I Don't

know. It's stupid Yeah, pretty much um very much

stupid so we will be back with the next episode

after this Alright, up next is the second to

last episode of the series for The Adventures

of Super Mario Bros. 3 entitled, The Venice Menace.

Koopa and Cootie Pie terrorized Venice with the

Doom Sub to warp the city to Koopa's castle and

turn it into a water park for Cootie Pie. Where's

Zelda's dad when you really need him? Oh god,

I wasn't thinking about that. I mean seriously,

you know, first of all, the Doom Sub? Never had

a damn doom sub in the game Right yeah, there

was never no damn doom sub it was always the

doom ship So they invented the doom sub just

for this episode pretty much I Guess I don't

know The whole time with this plot, you know

Mario's like I don't know why I have such a connection

to Venice and blah blah blah and of course They

show the audience the statues and we're like,

hey and the guy the the the pizza guy yeah, the

gondolier he uh He just starts spouting off all

these damn names, which like five out of how

many he spouted off, you know, I recognized,

but it's like seriously comparing all these people

and then to end it at the very end of the episode

with, it's a Mario and Luigi and it's like, oh

God, come on. He was just saying random Italian

words. I mean, he was like, pasta, spaghetti,

ravioli. And then he would throw in like, like

famous Italian people. He set a net food in cello

at one point. He even drew it a Lou Albano reference.

I did like that. I did like that. Although I

thought he said Albino, but I know he said Albano.

I got to say, though, out of all these episodes.

Really seven continents Venice menace probably

two out of the best ones out of these last four

or five I kind of like that they you know because

they are you know Italian plumbers in Brooklyn

I kind of like that they they tied it back to

Venice. I thought that was kind of cool. I do

like the whole thing This is pretty much when

when they're there's house or whatever it is

gets sunk by koopa and they're both asleep first

thing i thought of was uh... oh god let's name

that damn cartoon uh... the one where the mads

it's like one of the first gossamer cartoons

where the mad scientist is up in the castle on

a hill and he finds bugs and bugs just floats

to the castle because of the flood yeah as soon

as i saw mario Go to open the door underwater

Because they can breathe underwater apparently

You know I thought of that cartoon with bugs

because this is the same kind of thing What did

you think of the Venice menace hmm Kind of a

unusual episode I mean he had that doom stuff.

I'm trying to think of what What other video

game that kind of looks like it's from it, you

know It kind of looks like something out of Darius

Gaiden or something because that had like a weird

fish theme or being a space shooter. I don't

know but Like I said another episode I'm just

kind of exasperated this one. I'm just I don't

know what to say anymore because What what can

I say that has of it said before it's kind of

these weird plots and They get a lot of stuff

wrong in terms of how the real world works. At

one point they're underwater and the Kukla clan

is chopping down supports for the buildings and

I'm pretty sure that's not what's holding those

buildings up. It's just weird shit like that.

Fucking frog suits. I can't believe I can't believe

how how much they love the frog suits in this

show. I Can't believe cuz that one time when

they dressed up as Hammer Brothers doesn't count

I can't believe they never used the hammer suit.

You know, did they ever use the tanooki suit?

I don't remember Maybe super koopa does which

we'll talk about in a moment. Okay Alright, the

final episode of the Adventures of Super Mario

Bros. 3 cartoon series, Super Koopa! Kugi creates

a pendant that grants Koopa the Super Mario Bros.

powers, but it only works in the real world.

Koopa kidnaps Luigi to lure the others to Paris

to defeat them. Dun dun dun! Okay, I know I know

you hate the frog suit I know it but come on

now when you saw frog suit Koopa that was kind

of cool It kind of looked cool Kind of a little

bit scale of 1 to 10 maybe a 3 come on now Come

on a little bit You know, I actually went back

and played the game before watching this episode

to see if you could do Karubi Raccoon Fire. You

can't. No. You can do Karubi Raccoon, but you

can't do Karubi Raccoon Fire. Yeah, one thing

did come to mind about that Frog Suit Koopa.

Wouldn't that technically make him work at that

point? Yeah, it would. So maybe we finally got

our work our work reference into this show but

Yeah You can mix the shoe with the other power

-ups, but you can't mix the power -ups All right.

The shoe is actually called It's not Karubi.

It's like Karubo or something like that and For

years that was like the big mystery. It's like

who the fuck is Karubo. Why does he have? these

giant shoes. And later turned out that Kurubo

is just the Japanese name for the Goomba. And

I was like, oh, that's kind of lame. Why do Goombas

need shoes that big? I don't know. I don't know.

I do really like this episode. It's one of my

favorites of the series because again, he's doing

something that makes sense. It may look like

a plot of the week, but basically having Kuki

create a magic pendant that only grants him superpowers

in the real world and Mario and Luigi not being

able to get there because he uses his Koopa clogger.

These are the Super Mario Brothers of Plumbing.

They would have found a way to get rid of that

drain. Get rid of that clog, seriously. It took

the Princess being in the real world to trick

up a bomb into having his short fuse go off and

she threw it at the... at the... the... clogger

machine. So that was a little heavy -handed,

but, um... No, I thought Super Power Koopa was

awesome. Wish that wasn't actually in the games

Well As it would turn out What was it Super Mario

3d land or I don't know what it is, but he there

is a raccoon Koopa. Yeah And it's it's nightmare

fuel Yes, yes it is Alright, that's gonna do

it for Super Mario Bros. 3. We are done with

this series. We are, however, not done with the

Mario characters, as we have Super Mario World

left to deal with, which I am surprised they

didn't do more with that show, because if you

consider what... Super Mario World is and what

a feat that that was at the time that they would

have done a little bit more with it than what

they actually did and it just I know so alright

we're gonna take a quick break come back with

would you rate these episodes today? Seven Continents?

I'll give it two. I'm going to give it a four.

I really liked it. I thought it was really cool.

I thought it was really, really interesting.

True Colors? Zero. I've had it with cartoons

with social messages in them. I'll give it a

one only for the Cyndi Laufer reference. I mean,

because let's face it, Cyndi meant so much to

Captain Lou and everything else, so I'll give

it a one for that. Recycled Koopa? Zero. Same

reason. For me, yeah. It would have been better

if Captain Pollution showed up. I'll give it

a negative. Come on, dudes! Let's go wreck the

real world! Come on, Koopas, let's go! That's

the last thing we need to cross over with the

Captain Planet. The Venice Menace, what are you

going to give that? I'll give it a 2. I'm going

to give it a 3. I really dug it. I thought it

was pretty cool. I thought it was kind of funny.

And Super Koopa? I'll give it another 2. Give

it a five go Yep, probably the only five I've

given out the entire run, but I love this episode

so much It's just so awesome so All right, that's

gonna do it for us here on pixels in the animation

coming up next time We will have the adventures

of Super Mario Brothers 3 recap and then after

that we are actually going to be dedicating only

Let's see if I can do my math right here four

episodes to Super Mario World so We'll actually

get through that faster and then after that before

we get to Mega Man We're gonna do one episode

all about the power team I miss that show I missed

that car like that's a cartoon. I know is bad,

but I don't care because it was so cool All right
