About this Episode

A review of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, discussing the performances of characters like Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the film's visual effects, and its post-credits scenes. The conversation also touches on the current box office, the casting of Johnny Knoxville and Tony Shalhoub for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and recent thoughts on Big Trouble in Little China.

Today on MWIRE, we'll be discussing which children's

films and adult television series are on the

verge of being remade, turtle voices, and our

reactions to Captain America The Winter Soldier.

All that and more coming up on MWIRE Weekly.

All right, it's time for MY Weekly and joining

me as always here lately, always and lately,

yes, is Nathan. Hello. Hello. I forgot to refer

to you as Adolpha Shabadoo. Oh, go ahead. And

Matt Fridley sent hello. Hello. We're trying

to pimp out Twitters. It's more like oaring out.

Oaring out our Twitter names. Alright, so getting

in, as we always do, to box office first. Taking

a look at last weekend, there should be no surprise

as to who came away with the crown for the weekend.

I think we all could predict that pretty easily

and that would be Captain America the Winter

Soldier coming in at, as of this point, 96 million

dollars. Wow, wow. That's a good one. That's

a decent start. So that's half its budget of

170 million and Interesting though. I was reading

an article about the top ten opening weekends

for superhero films 96 million would not be enough

to get into that territory Anybody want to guess

on which superhero film had the best opening

weekend? Well Avengers is like one of the best

grossing movies of all time, right? Avengers

was number one. It had an opening weekend of

two hundred and seven million. Which didn't even

meet its budget. So, yeah, it was two hundred

and seven for Avengers. Then, actually, it's

surprising. Next was Iron Man 3 with a hundred.

Yeah, with one hundred and seventy four. Then

we have the Dark Knight Rises and the Dark Knight

with one hundred and sixty and one hundred fifty

eight. Then it goes to Spider -Man 2, Spider

-Man 3, the Amazing Spider -Man. Man of Steel,

Iron Man 2, and Spider -Man 1. Wow, I didn't

think the Man of Steel would be that high. So

they all had over $115 million opening weekends,

and so Captain America The Winter Soldier comes

in at about $96, so a little bit shy of that,

but it did, I believe, if memory serves correctly,

better than the original. Captain America did

in its opening weekend. I'd have to look at the

stats exactly, but I'm pretty sure it did better

than that. Anyway, so that was number one. Rounding

up your top five, we have NOAA at number two

with 17 million, a slight drop from the 96 million

that Captain America did. Divergent number three

at 13 million. God's Not Dead still hanging around

up there, just under 8 million. And then number

five, Grand Budapest Hotel. with just over six

million, just barely beating out the Muppets

most wanted for that fifth spot. Not much surprises

there amongst the top five. I will say that Mr.

Peabody and Sherman just broke the 100 million

mark after a very slow start, and it's still

not at its budget. So that one's in trouble.

How does its budget get so high? Like the Lego

movie is only 60 million. Yeah, and that one's

at a hundred and forty five like It's a 90 minute

You know, yeah, that's ridiculous. It had the

same almost the same budget as frozen Which frozen

look like five years to make speaking of frozen

Besides it's still in the theater It's it's almost

up to three hundred ninety nine million mark,

but something newsworthy noteworthy for frozen

this Week if you go to all -time Worldwide Grosses,

which is not just the domestic, but we're talking

worldwide gross frozen this week became the number

one Highest grossing animated film of all time

Wow Wow Yay Any idea of what film that would

have just passed? Lanking no one more guess Toy

Story Toy Story 3 So it has passed Toy Story

3 as the number one highest grossing animated

film of all time. And it has also broken into

the top 10 of just highest grossing films of

all time. It's at number nine right now. It just

passed. It just passed the Dark Knight Rises.

Yeah. So if you're going overall, like worldwide

grosses, number one is Avatar. Number two is

Titanic. Three is the Avengers. Then Harry Potter

and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Iron Man 3, Transformers

Dark of the Moon, Lord of the Rings, Return of

the King, Skyfall, and then Frozen. Really? I

didn't expect Skyfall to be on that list. Again,

that's worldwide, not domestic. So domestic list

is a slight touch different. And Frozen, if you're

looking at the domestic gross, is at number 19.

So anyways, and then if we're looking at our

yearly... Box office so far. We still have the

Lego movie reigning supreme at number one Ride

-along number two divergent three three hundred

rise of an empire four and mr. Peabody and Sherman

number five with Captain America right on everybody's

heels It's gonna get you it's gonna get you anything

box office wise that you guys wanted to bring

up I'm glad that Now you go I'm glad that the

Grand Budapest Hotel is up there like it didn't

just like flounder or anything. Yeah, it only

actually dropped it usually when a big film like

this opens you see major drops like at least

50 % drops across the board like you see Noah

even at number two dropped 60 % Divergent even

at number three dropped 50 % but Grand Budapest

Hotel only dropped 26 % so that's pretty good

for it given a different genre and a different

type of film for people to see that maybe aren't

into the superhero action genre Yeah, it was

fun. I'm glad Muppets did as well as it did still,

like another two weeks at where it's at and it'll

make its budget while it's still in theaters.

Yeah, it made a good chunk of the remaining part

up towards that and, you know, it's only been

out for, what, three weeks now? So it still has

a good probably seven, eight, nine, ten weeks

left to be out in theaters, depending on all

the other animated films coming out, not that

Muppets is animated, but all the other kids'

films coming out. I would suspect it's going

to be out there at least for a couple more months,

so it should have no problem making its budget

up. Biggest drop for the week out of the major

films that are still kind of noteworthy. 300

Rise of Empire and Cesar Chavez and Sabotage

all dropped a good deal. Sabotage can add that

probably to the list of flops for 2014. It's

only made about just under 9 million so far in

two weeks. That's not a good opening in two weeks.

So anything else, Nate? Nope. All right, Matt?

Alright getting into news and headlines for the

week not a huge news week as far as movies go

So we will get right into them a couple brief

headlines one for people that are fans of aardman

animation There has been some material put out

for one of their next films, teaser, trailer,

poster, and for those that don't know who our

admin animations are, you didn't listen to our

top 100 animated films of all time. It's the

creators of Wallace and Gromit, among other things,

Chicken Run, and they have a new film that they're

working on called Sean the Sheep. won't come

out until about a year from now, but they're

just starting to trickle out information, so

anybody that likes Armin animation should be

excited for that. Nate, what is your opinion

on the Wallace and Gromit series, Chicken Run,

and the other stuff they've done? Unfortunately,

I haven't seen any of them, like, at all. But

I really respect the art of it, and I love the

style of it, and I really want to see them, but

for some reason, I've never had a chance to actually

go and actually watch any Wallace and Gromit

movie. I actually prefer Chicken Run to the Wallace

and Gromit films. Well, you hate British people.

Yes, and... It's a brush -off. Yeah, whatever.

Well, no, the reason being because Chicken Run

is kind of a nod to a lot of kind of classic

movie making and kind of different themes that

they used to use a lot in like old spy films

and different stuff like that. So it's kind of

like a... Spoof yet not so I kind of like that

Matt. Have you seen any of the Ardman stuff?

We had a big debate because there's a lot of

people that are Opposed to the stop -motion animation

that they do and won't watch films because of

it. Why why would they be opposed to that? Well,

they a lot of people have certain styles that

they just stay away from whether it be like,

some people are opposed to anime, some people

are opposed to claymation, stop motion, 3D, whatever.

And when we were talking about our top 100 animated

films, there was a couple of people in particular

that were right off this stuff just because of

the stop motion quality, which is unfortunate

because there is some good stuff to be seen from

this company. Yeah. So the thing about showing

the sheep, though, is it reminds me of sheep

in the big city. Which, I don't know if you've

ever watched that, Kevin? No, I have not. I watched

that one. Such a good, silly cartoon show from

the 90s. Interesting. I might have to check that

out. The other headline before we get into actual

casting and remake news was around a film called

Pixels, which, if I'm not mistaken, I have not

heard anything about this. And the only reason,

yeah, the only reason I really put it in here

was because of the Kind of the plot synopsis

that's put in this article In the and I'm reading

this verbatim, so I apologize But basically in

the film aliens misinterpret video feeds of classic

arcade games as a declaration of war against

them And they attack the earth using the games

as models for their assaults So like the president

has to call in his childhood friend who's a 80s

video game champion To like help save the planet

like it sounds awesome, but then you're like

Adam Sandler And you're like as it is being produced

by Happy Madison's Adam Sandler and is he gonna

be in it or is it just produced by him? Um, I

believe he's there. It says the cast is Michelle

Monahan Adam Sandler Kevin James Josh Gadd sure

dink dinklage So, I don't know that just sounds

something like that It really sounds cool. I

would I don't want to write it off as being another

Adam Sandler movie, but, you know, it's going

to be an Adam Sandler movie. So it says it says

it's being done directed by Chris Columbus, who

some people will be familiar with. It says that

they're working with the 80s, most iconic video

game brands in an effort to bring some of those

characters to the film. Don't know which ones

they'd be targeting or how that leaking the legalities

of all that would play out, but Hey, whatever

I'm all for more video game stuff as long as

it's not trying to be a complete replicate Replication

of something like record Ralph or stuff like

that. It definitely doesn't look like it based

on that like teaser yeah That looks that looks

really cool. Yeah, so I mean we'll have to see

as more information gets put out on that one

if that's something that's gonna be worth a watch

or not. Getting into sequels and remakes, that's

where the bulk of our news is today. No surprise

there. And it seems to be a slew of either kids

movies from like the 80s or like adult television

series from like the 70s. So we'll get right

into it. The first one, Pink Panther. Apparently

going to get an animated reboot and has hired

the director of The Simpsons movie. Now this

is Pink Panther, not Peter Sellers Pink Panther.

This is the animated actual Pink Space Panther.

So I don't know how that would work. He was silent

in all his stuff. So I don't know if that's going

to remain a silent animated character and how

that will play with today's audiences. But I

don't know like I've never been a fan of pink

panther so I'm not really super interested but

I Don't know if there's a calling for this I

Believe so I Can't see this one doing super great

because I don't think there's like a big fan

base for pink panther But whatever I'm getting

into a couple things that I think are somewhat

interesting to see what exactly which direction

they go with a pair of movies from my childhood

that are likely getting a reboot or a sequel

treatment first is Goonies Goonies to This is

from Richard Donner the director who a lot of

people will be familiar with from his work with

a lethal weapon Superman Apparently he is saying

that Goonies 2 is going to happen and he's actually

trying to get all of the original cast members

together to be a part of it and For those people

that don't know the cast members from Goonies

Are pretty familiar people Josh Brolin, Corey

Feldman, Sean Astin They're out and about they're

doing stuff so Don't know I don't know how they

would play into a sequel as they're much older

than they were obviously back in 1985 but I Guess

if they're gonna do another Indiana Jones, they

might as well do the the junior version, which

is the Goonies Nate have you seen the Goonies?

I know it's on her table of stuff to watch I

have not Okay, we're watching eventually here

Just know that they are in a cave and there's

like treasure and there's like a ghost or something

maybe And I was like, I didn't see that one.

Yeah, I don't get your references. I was also

a very poor kid and didn't go to see a lot of

movies. OK, fair enough. So we watched that,

and then you can comment on it at a later date.

He said it was 1985, so it was in theaters before

your born date. True dat. True dat. It's definitely

worth a watch. It's classic 80s. And like I said,

it's kind of like if you took like an Indiana

Jones or something like that and made it for

kids That's kind of how I would sum it up another

film Came out right around the same time that

might be getting a remake is the other G movie

gremlins They call this a horror comedy there

really wasn't much horror about this film Most

people probably know what a gremlin. No kind

of can picture what the gremlins look like Steven

Spielberg was involved with this Joe Dante There

was a sequel Back in 1990 called the new batch,

which was a little bit different tone and take

to this film But apparently they're just going

to completely remake it possibly I think there's

a lot of hurdles that they still have to go through

to get that But Warner Brothers is apparently

interested in doing that um and you guys have

i know you have not seen gremlins either right

no i've seen this one all right did you like

the original gremlins matt uh yeah i mean i don't

remember like the big plot points or anything

but i i definitely remembered enjoying it as

a child i i haven't seen it in a long time but

i just basically remember that that the gremlins

uh kind of had like certain It's almost like

zombies like certain things They couldn't handle

like water I think or something like that and

maybe some I don't know if it was sunlight water

or certain types of food or whatever But there

were certain things that that would get to them

And the kind of the trick of the movie was figuring

figuring out what those things were and how to

combat them because there's gizmo the nice friendly

good ol Gremlin that kind of reminds you of what

furbies would later become and then there's kind

of the evil gremlins, but so interesting to see

that Goonies and gremlins may be on the verge

of some remakes. For the older crowd and people

that like television series, Rockford Files apparently

is being turned into a movie starring James Garner

as Jim Rockford was the 70s at NBC series and

now Vince Vaughn has been attached to take on

the role for a film adaptation of that. I did

never watch Rockford Files So I'm not really

attached to this property or tied to it in any

way, but Vince Vaughn can do some stuff good.

I've seen ads for the Rockford files on an antenna

TV, a local station here that might be in other

places. As far as I can tell it's just like a

standard 70s detective show I don't know quite

why they needed to buy the franchise to make

a movie rather than just making a new movie about

detectives But if you do a Google search on Jim

Rockford, which is the main character like he

Vince Vaughn looks like a good choice just face

to face You know, so okay, we'll see So it might

be good casting for that. Interesting to see

him in that type of role. Like I said, I haven't

seen the Rockford file, so I don't know how Jim

Rockford was portrayed in that. You know what

I mean? I don't know if he's, besides the physicality,

is he somewhat comedic? Yeah, I don't know. So,

be interesting to see, but like I said, I guess

I would have to actually watch an episode of

The Rockford Files to have any ounce of interest.

Nah, I watched MacGyver not the Rockford Files

Also, I only put this in here because of your

guys's love for kung fu Universal and legendary

apparently are moving forward with kung fu movie

It was also a 70s television show kung fu I did

not watch it starred David Carradine yeah as

a monk traveling across america looking for his

father and it involved martial arts obviously

so it ran from 1972 to 1975 and apparently there

is now talks about a kung fu movie another property

that i have no nostalgic ties to but uh what

do you guys think kung fu the movie Well, I mean

even if you haven't seen the show everyone knows

the take the fly from my hand grasshopper And

I'm sure there are other moments from kung fu

that people you know that I can at least see

why they would want to get this franchise There

are moments that are that are suffused in our

culture So I mean I'm interested that I mean,

you know, I'll hold my breath until I see a trailer,

but kung fu movies are good So why not? Can can

arrival if man It was amazing above average kung

-fu movies Say it man was above average I did

that's that's good. I think there needs to be

less hyperbole on the internet Hyperbole kind

of guy yeah, I blow everything out of proportion

Also another remake which is unnecessary Pete's

dragon. Yeah So that was another 70s thing. What's

up with the 70s things lately here? I thought

we were on the 80s remakes Yeah, 70 when we're

gonna get the 90s remakes. I mean like a decade

Let's get it right No, we got to wait for at

least like another five or six years until you

guys are all having kids. No, no. Then they'll

start with those and be like, oh, we'll get those

parents now. But anyways, Pete's Dragon was the

Disney. It was also a hybrid film where it was

like live action with some animated stuff because

they couldn't really do a dragon back then. So

they animated it. I like that the the article

is trying to say that it speaks. That they're

doing this because of all the interest lately

and stuff like Game of Thrones and the Hobbit.

That's so silly. Like the Pete's Dragon is a

big doofy dragon. It's like nothing to do with

the Game of Thrones. And also a weird thing is

that David Lowery is being tied to this and The

last movie I saw him do was Ain't Them Bodies

Saints, which is like a according to this article,

I'll read their genre for it, Southern Gothic

crime thriller, which is about as far from Disney

as you can possibly get. So I don't know what

he's going to be doing with this property, but

I didn't like Pete's Drag in the original. So

again, I have no interest in any reroute. But

if you're a huge fan of dragons and you like

Game of Thrones and The Hobbit, then Pete's dragon

might be for you. Oh man. I don't know what to

say about that. Alright, let's get into probably

the biggest news story that actually almost hit

immediately after we recorded our previous week's

episode, which was casting news about Teenage

Mutant Ninja Turtles. That casting news being

specifically about the voices of two characters

Leonardo and splinter and I think this article

came out like on April Fool's Day, and I was

really hoping it was an April Fool's joke Because

they're attaching Johnny Knoxville as the voice

of Leonardo and Tony Shalhoub aka monk as the

voice of splinter Don't have a problem as much

with Tony Shalhoub, but Johnny Knoxville being

the voice of Leonardo makes me want to punch

a baby. Oh, the poor baby. Dude, dude, Johnny

Knoxville, you can get him to punch a baby. That's

like right up his alley. Hey, I'm Johnny Knoxville.

Welcome to Jackass. We're punching babies on

this episode. Like the big debate in the voiceover

world when it comes to. Big budget films or animated

films. There's always like this either go with

like your traditional voice actors Or you go

with like the big name celebrity actors like

when you have You know will smith or chris rock

or whoever doing these dreamworks films What's

the last thing chris rock was in? I think an

adam salin movie actually Yeah, madagascar 16,

I think um But this is doing neither of those

things they didn't get a actual voice actor and

they did not get a celebrity actor They got Johnny

Knoxville. Okay. Yeah Yeah, and and I think Johnny

Knoxville Can do good I Think he can what has

Raphael or my not Raphael is Michelangelo. No,

yeah Leonardo why not? They picked him to do

Leonardo Oh, yeah, yeah, he should definitely

not be Leonardo. He should be like Michelangelo

or Rapia. Yeah, might be able to stomach it a

little bit more if it's like Michelangelo, because

he's kind of like the jokester of the group traditionally.

Shouldn't we know who's Michelangelo? Because

he was in the trailer. Well, I think those are

possibly... See, the thing is, were the first

four actors that were tied to the turtles all

just like the suit slash motion capture people

or were some of them going to also do the voices?

We're just these two getting redubbed by different

actors as far as their voice or will there be

more voice casting down the line? That is kind

of up for The rumor mills to be turning and to

see what happens with that, but it's possible.

These are the only two That are gonna be have

separate voices, which is weird. Yeah, that is

weird So whatever it is really poorly dubbed

Agile just doesn't know what he's doing end of

his career. I thought the end of his career was

when Jackass got canceled a decade ago. No, because

he's still doing Jackass movies that are making

a lot of money. Yeah, the the the one where he

was an old man did did well, right? It was like

nominated for an Oscar, right? Got an Oscar nomination

and did super well at the box office. Yeah. But

I would just like to chalk this up as yet another

bad thing. on the list of cons for the Teenage

Mutant Ninja Turtle movie. I know some other

people in the network are more excited for this,

and I'm hoping I'm wrong about everything, but

every single news story that comes out about

this movie is like a red flag. I think Tony Shalhoub

is good. I really like him. I like Tony Shalhoub.

I don't know if he strikes me as a good splinter,

though. He's gonna play it exactly like he plays

monk that would be hilarious Yeah, a rat that

is a clean freak that's weird So that is the

news for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I know

a lot of people have been talking about that

on the internet the old internet another casting

news is Zac Efron getting a somewhat Big role

here, I guess breaking out of his mold of being

What he was as a as a youngster because he's

been cast as possible lead in one of John Grisham's

films The associate which is yet will be the

next John Grisham novel to become a big screen

film I Guess Zac Efron can go ahead and do that

Seems like a weird choice, but I guess he's trying

to really break out of that mold and make him

like a legit Actor I'm cool with that like like

here He kind of reminds me of Leonardo DiCaprio

because he was like ooh teen heartthrob And then

he started doing like really weird stuff and

now he's like Wolf of Wall Street Yeah, you know

and and I also I really like Zac Efron when in

Hairspray. I don't know I like that movie And

there's a chance there's a chance you can do

it. I Think he's got he's got the skills to pay

said bills Yeah, I guess it's similar to back

in the day like when Some of the other characters

that have appeared in John Grisham I think wasn't

Matt Damon in a John Grisham film or something

at some point when he was younger I don't know.

I could be getting that confused with Some other

novels back in the day, but anyways, and then

there is all kinds of Batman and Superman stuff

going around there I don't really have much to

say about it because I'm just trying to wait

until we get more on this but Holly hunter And

I don't know how to say everybody else's names

Tao Akamoto and Callan Mulvey is that how you

say his name? Yeah, yeah, they're all perfect

They've all been added to the cast for Batman

versus Superman. So we will see. There's all

kinds of rumors going around as far as what kind

of characters they possibly could be playing.

I don't care until I actually know. But joining

the cast there with Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck

and everybody else. As a note, if we ever mispronounce

your name wrong and you want to correct it and

get on the show, feel free to contact us. Yeah.

Just be like, hey, that's not how you say that

guy's name or that's not how you say my name.

Yeah. You've got to be the celebrity. Yeah. A

really good impersonation so that we can then

put you on and then get a seasoned assist letter

from the said actor. That would be incredible.

So yeah, so if you're a big, huge. Batman, Superman

film. Feel free to give us your thoughts on those

three being added to the cast. Otherwise, I'm

not going to speak of it too much. And getting

into trailer talk, we had a few trailers released

this week. Sex Talk, Wolf Creek 2, Palo Alto,

The Drop, Lucky Them, Lucy, Angriest Man in Brooklyn,

Blended, and Venus Inferred. Did any of those

catch your guys' fancy? It's Sex Tape, not Sex

Talk. No, it's Sex Talk. Is it Sex Tape? It is

sex tape. Oh. Not that it's very important. I

mean, it's... No, it's important. It's like the

whole reason for the movie. It's different. Yeah.

Yes. Yes. I mean, just that movie doesn't look

that important. Very true. Let's talk about The

Anger's Man in Brooklyn, because it's a semi

-serious, fun comedy with Robin Williams. Finally.

I've been waiting all the years. It's two or

three years since he's done that, right? I think

so. He did that one show on TV that Kevin watches

sometimes. The television. With Sarah Michelle

Geller. Yeah, that looks tolerable. I don't know.

I haven't seen it. So this one is Angerous Man

of Brooklyn is Robin Williams and Mila Kunis.

She's better cast in this than in the Jupiter

Ascending. Yeah, definitely. She basically plays

a nurse or a doctor or whatever and tells Robin

Williams that he has 90 minutes to live, even

though that's a lie. That's not a spoiler, it's

in the trailer. So Robin Williams goes crazy

thinking he has 90 minutes to live in the classic

story of must make everything right before you

die type thing. But it's Robin Williams, so it'll

be filled with hilarity and probably a few genie

voices. I like how It started off with him doing

like an internal monologue or like, uh, I don't

know. I just like, I like movies with voiceover

of the characters with what they're thinking.

Does that make sense? No, that's cool. Like that's,

I don't see that enough and I like it. Gives

you another level to things. Um, reminds me of

like, uh, what was it? Stranger than fiction.

Yes. That's exactly what I thought when I, when

I saw it, I was like, are they doing like another

one of those? Now you guys saw a different showing

of Captain America than I did. Did they show

the trailer for Lucy when you guys saw that?

Yes. What do you guys think of that? I love Scarlett

Johansson, but I'm not enthused about that one.

I was with it for like the first part? Yeah,

yeah. It was like, hey, we kidnapped a chicken.

We're gonna get her to smuggle something for

us. And it's in her belly and stuff like that.

And then she turned into superhuman. And then

a weird kind of superhuman that doesn't really

make sense. Like, I can read everyone's nervous

system. I can use more of my brain, which now

allows me to force throw people like I'm in Star

Wars, which was weird to me. Also, I thought

that I said this to Nate when we got out of our

showing. I'm pretty sure science disproved that

whole 10 % of the brain theory like a decade

ago, and that it's just certain sections of the

brain are working at different times that do

different things. Well, not if you're Lucy. Yeah.

Well, hey, you were kinder to the film, so why

don't you be there? No, that's it. I just, I

don't know. It looks good. I'd watch it. I mean,

I'll watch Scarlett Johansson be Scarlett Johansson

and kick ass and do stuff. There's so many jokes

that could be made right there that I'll refrain

from making them all Blended was the other one.

I wanted to bring up only because it's another

Adam Sandler film As bad as the other ones He

goes on vacation and then hilarity ensues which

has been done before with another one of his

films. But anyway, it seems like every movie

he's been going on vacation and meeting people

that he didn't expect to run into. Yeah, but

here's the thing. Adam Sandler has done some

great films. He's done some absolutely garbage

films. And then there's been some that are kind

of like, but this has him with Drew Barrymore.

And to me, so far, that's been a decent combination.

I like 50 first dates. Yeah Weddings the wedding

singer singer and I'm trying to think there was

a third one they were in together or not But

I like those two films, so maybe those two just

make a good pair. I Think they do So we'll see

and it's got a bunch of Got a bunch of people's

real -life kids. I think in there, which is gonna

be weird. It's got Terry Crews in it But I think

like the kids that are playing their kids are

actual kids of people involved in the film weird

Would I would want to do that wouldn't you? Yeah,

my kid was in an Adam Sandler movie. Yeah, no,

I would want to do that I'm just questioning

if they're gonna be able to be believable or

not. But like I said, it's They're gonna be kids.

They're gonna be terrible actors. These kids

are unbelievable as children All right now I

sound stupid no, oh my gosh when we were at the

theater though that The blended thing came on

and people were dying in the in there. Oh, yeah,

dude. That's so funny. Oh, yeah. People were

absolutely riotous over blended. I expected them

to clap when the trailer was done. They do it.

They didn't show that for me. For me, it is on

fire. They show million laughs and then they

showed six Marvel trailer. Yeah. Yeah. We got

Lucy and blended and then six more. Wait, what

were the six we got? We got three or four. Oh,

yes, better man and Yeah, man you said you didn't

like you you're like worried about Guardians

of the Galaxy I think it looks awesome. I'm not

gonna lie. I've read the Guardians of the Galaxy

books because my Marvel Unlimited subscription

ended, but I've read the first 20 or so issues

of the Guardians of the Galaxy set up to the

Annihilation Wave, and they've changed a lot.

And I mentioned probably every podcast I've been

in that I'm a sucker for if you take the franchise,

you should stay true to the original thing. I

mean, I don't want you to just do a shot -for

-shot remake of the comics. I mean, no one wants

that. If we wanted that, we'd just go reread

the comics. But they've changed a lot. And some

of the characters that they've changed the most

are characters that have been in Marvel Universe

for 30 years. And so that has me a little worried.

It does look like a fun movie, and I'm gonna

go see it probably in theaters. But I am a little

upset at what they have changed so far that I

can see in the trailer. And just to clarify,

there's a difference between wanting something

to stay true to the source material and wanting

or not wanting remakes in general. Yeah. So,

that. X -Men was the other Marvel trailer that

they were. Oh yeah, yeah. Things have been advanced.

So any other trailer talk that you guys want

to do? Um... The Venus in Fur looked really weird.

Like, did you guys watch that? I did not get

a chance to watch that one. It's like a foreign

film, it's in French. And they had, like, the

whole movie's in French as far as I can tell,

but the trailer had a narrator? which it really

needed because it was really confusing. As far

as I could tell, it's just like a casting agent.

It's like an actress takes revenge on a casting

agent, I guess, or casting director or something.

Gotcha. But it just it looks interesting. And

the drop is kind of special to note because I

believe that's James Gandolfini's last on screen

role that hasn't come out yet. Oh, yeah, I forgot

about that. Hope it does well for that, because

James Gandolfini was amazing. Yeah, so that might

be something that I'd probably eventually watch

like on Redbox or On Demand or something once

it came out. It looks too intense for me to see

in the theaters. Yeah. Gotta pick and choose

movie theater films wisely. Speaking of which,

let's get into some films that we saw at the

theater. So coming up next after this clip, we'll

get into our main attraction, which this week

is Captain America, The Winter Soldier. Most

of the intelligence community doesn't believe

he exists. The ones that do call him the Winter

Soldier. He's a ghost. You'll never find him.

I joined SHIELD to protect people. Captain. To

build a better world sometimes means tearing

the old one down. You are tearing me apart, Lisa!

Alright, welcome back. As we said, the main attraction

this week is Captain America the Winter Soldier,

but before we get to that, we're gonna do a little

bit of what we've been watching this previous

week, starting with a film that the three of

us saw on Friday. We were somewhat live tweeting

about it. It's a movie that Nate and Matt had

seen before, but they wanted me to watch it,

and that movie is Nate. The room? Yes. Oh, it's

that one. Good. The room. Somebody give me like

an intro to the room. Someone explain the plot

synopsis. You can't just explain the room in

a sentence or two. It's the most complicated.

You need to see it at least twice just to understand

it. And every American should see it in theaters.

This is coming from an interview. with the man

himself who did everything on this film. There's

an interview with him and he specifically says

that not only does every American need to see

this in the theater, but then you need to see

it on DVD twice to get what it's all about. Tommy

was so visionary. Yes. I think all three of us

can attest to the fact that you do not. need

to see this film more than once to know what

it's about. Whoa, wow, okay, yeah. Now every

person should see The Broom at least twice, but

yeah, you pretty much can get it in one. It's

really about a really nice guy who's really trusting

and then he gets betrayed and kind of goes off

the deep end. Don't know what my favorite thing

about this film is I don't know if it's the fact

that in a film where there was no green screen

necessary whatsoever That half the film is green

screen Or if it's the incredible acting that

you get to observe while you watch the film It's

a toss -up. I Think it's a cinematography. I

think that's why you watch it that too As someone

who's been reading the book, my girlfriend bought

me The Disaster Artist, which is written by Mark,

the second lead, I guess, of the movie, about

his meeting Tommy Wiseau five years before shooting

The Room, and then their friendship leading up

to it, and then the shooting of The Room. I've

been reading that book and it's just like there's

so much more going on like it just looks like

there's nothing going on in this movie it's like

what do they do and it's so amateur but like

knowing what's behind the scenes is even more

incredible and anyone who's seen The Room which

I imagine is a lot of people at this point because

it's become like a hit of its own in its own

way like should definitely check out the book

because it's it's crazy and for those of you

who still have no idea what film we're talking

about The Room is has grown as what a lot of

people have claimed to be the worst movie ever

made. It's on a lot of lists of worst film ever.

And you're going to watch it and you're going

to think that it was done as a joke or to be

kind of a joke. But as Matt can attest to this,

the guy was 100 percent serious about this film.

100 percent. He really believes in this film

and the power of this film Nate what's your favorite

part of the room? No, I don't I hate this movie

No, it's it's uh, I don't know Um, it's hard

to say what my favorite part of this movie is

cuz it's all bad probably the the psychiatrist

character I don't know I feel like he's out of

place like he shouldn't be in that movie at all

there's a great scene with him when there's two

other characters speaking and he's kind of in

the background and he's literally like feeling

the like DVD rack or the CD rack have I told

you why I know I told Nate last night because

I found out I was I actually after after us watching

it I went home and read about another chapter

of the book Apparently, when he enters the scene,

he bashed his head on the staircase and had a

concussion when they shot that and he was trying

to get his bearings. He had no idea and no perception.

So yeah, he's just rubbing up against things,

trying to figure out where everything is in relation

to his body. They didn't stop shooting for whatever

reason. They just got a concussion and just started

and it felt this way through the scene. You got

to understand that they can't just stop shooting

in that film because. They don't really know

how cameras work. There's a scene in the interview

there, a question where he literally talks about

a scene being very hard because someone fell

in the scene and they're going to have to shoot

that and capture that person falling. And they

also admit to using they use two different cameras

to to shoot the film because he did not have

the information necessary at his disposal. To

to know the difference between the two different

formats he was shooting in Which was HD digital

and then 35 millimeter This film is all kinds

of great This is the type of film where if you're

ever gonna start a crappy movie night like this

could be one that you start with to set the tone

for everybody as to what kind of fun you can

have while watching a completely ridiculous film.

And it's so bizarre because of how passionate

and absolutely batshit insane this guy is. It

definitely makes it so much better that he's

so passionate about it. It's like Birdemic. It

felt like they're being serious with their movie

and they're trying to get a message across and

I'm really worried because apparently they're

either doing or they've already done Birdemic

2 and It's like you asked for it That was like

their tag line and it's like you're just gonna

make a bad movie to make a bad movie You're not

gonna try to make a good movie and then it I

feel like it loses some of the magic You know

what I mean? I feel you can't be one of the worst

movies of all time if you're trying to be one

of the worst movies of all time Yeah, exactly

You have to legitimately be trying to make a

good movie that just turns out to be a terrible

movie. In The Room, it definitely fits that criteria.

I'm interested to see some more stuff that you

learn from your reading of the book as you go

through and complete the book you're reading,

Matt, and get some more trivia about the inner

workings of the cast and crew of The Room. And

by crew, I mean Tommy Wiseau. Tommy Wiseau. Who

did everything in this film. I like the fact

that in one of the credits you pointed out that

a couple people that were credited for certain

things weren't even alive. Yeah, according to

the book it was like, I think it might have been

Tommy Wiseau's assistants. It was like two of

the people were dead, one person was never on

set, and then one person was the guy they were

renting the studio from. It's like none of those

are assistants. He doesn't know what an assistant

is either. Getting into some other stuff, what

other movies did you watch this week, Nate? Anything

else you saw? Well, we watched Big Trouble in

Little China. Matt did not. I was - No, Matt

was - Oh, a portion of that movie. You were asleep.

I attribute Big Trouble in Little China and the

feelings I had towards that film were very similar

to the feelings I had during Noah. I thought

I was going to see a certain type of movie and

turned out to be something a little different.

Yes. I thought I was going to see like an 80s

action film with some kung fu or something like

that. And then people start climbing lightning

bolts and Yeah, that one guy was literally climbing

the lightning bolt like he would grab the lightning

bolt with his hand and then like move up it and

then he would come down it and stuff. Fair enough.

Yeah. And then, you know, people like shooting

stuff out of their eyes. And the best part about

that film was James Hong, who is a pretty famous

voice actor and actor. But he played the main

villain, I guess you can call it. as both an

old wrinkled up decaying corpse of a person and

a younger shooting lasers out of your eyes, badass

villain. Yeah. See, I don't I don't know. I felt

like you didn't enjoy it that much. And I know

Matt was like, ah, whatever. But I don't know

how you can not enjoy this movie. It's so much

fun. I didn't say I didn't enjoy the experience.

I just. For some reason, for the first 30 years

of my life, whenever I heard people referring

to that, I was mistaken as to what they were

referring to. I thought that was like a different

movie. It was more unexpected than a lack of

enjoyment. It had, who's the main guy? Kurt Russell.

Yeah, it's Kurt Russell. I mean, I should have

known that I couldn't take the film serious when

Kurt Russell was involved. But no, it was fun.

It was like classic fun from the 80s in a way.

And I thought there was a lot of funny and entertaining

scenes. What's your favorite part about the film,

Nate? Probably just how crappy of a hero Kurt

Russell plays in this movie. Like, it's not his...

Movie at all like there's no reason for him to

be there Like everything would have worked out

fine if he didn't do anything in that movie I

feel and the funny thing is it's not even him

like being a it's not him being a bad actor or

delivering lines badly It's written in to the

script like oh, yeah, correctly is written in

for him to be kind of this bumbling idiot of

a hero And it's more subtle than that. He doesn't

like is not overly like bumbling like I don't

know what I'm doing. He's just like he tries

really hard and then he just doesn't get it right.

Like he never gets it perfect on the first try

or you know, because because if you were put

in a situation like that, you want it, you know,

you would like accidentally like jam your gun

and be like crap. What do I do? I don't know.

I feel like it was. It was more interesting than

if he was like a perfect action 80s action hero

Matt I know you kind of fell asleep partially

into this is this a film that you're ever gonna

watch all the way through I Kind of want to rewatch

it. Yeah, it looked interesting Hey, I think

it's one of those ones I probably have to be

in the mood for Knowing now like cuz I going

into I thought exactly you thought this is not

at all what I was expecting when I started watching

it but Yeah, I will probably hope to see it again.

I'm not going to say I'm going to make the effort,

because I'm a crappy person, and I make really

poor efforts on things, as most people that know

me in the real life can attest to. But I would

be willing to watch it again, should an opportunity

arise. It looked fun. Any other films that you

guys saw over the week that you wanted to bring

up before we get into both a little bit of talk

of the original Captain America and then the

Captain America the Winter Soldier? I was gonna

say I rewatched the original Cap before we went

and saw the new one. Okay, well, let's get into

that a little bit then and get our feelings so

that people kind of can see where we're coming

from as we move into the second Captain America.

Starting with you, Matt, what was your opinion?

And this can be completely full of spoilers because

the movie's been out for a long time. But what

was your... Long time! Oh, wait, oh, the first

one, I'm sorry. Yeah, the first one. No, it's

been out for two days, people, jeez. Get with

me. You should know it all already. It's already

done $100 million. Everybody important went and

saw it. Matt, what was your feelings about the

first Captain America? The first Captain America,

I liked it a lot. And the thing that was great

about re -watching it, because I don't think

I'd seen it since it was in theaters. was when

I was re -watching it I noticed things that I

had missed like uh like Arnim Zola was the the

Red Skull's assistant I was like oh hey that's

Arnim Zola like I hope they bring him back um

and uh I mean they they weren't 100 % faithful

like uh and and that didn't bother me it was

it was still good um like because there's some

choices that you just couldn't do like they couldn't

make Bucky a 12 year old Robin you know clone.

Like it just probably wouldn't work for modern

audiences. But the changes I thought were generally

good. What did you feel of Chris Evans as that

role? I don't remember him in the Fantastic Four

movie like all that much and that's the only

thing I think I've ever saw with him in it. I

thought he did a great job both as early Steve

Rogers and then again as Cap. I thought he did

it great. job and the fact that he says he's

good done after Marvel you know I'm not gonna

be like we're gonna lose a great but like we

he's done a good job and I hope he continues

to do a good job Nate how did you feel about

the first film's ability to capture what you

envision the world of Captain America and kind

of the feel in the atmosphere that should be

present for it? Captain America is my favorite

dude he's my favorite superhero So like, well,

he's my favorite Marvel superhero. So I felt

like the actor, who's the actor again? Chris

Evans. Chris Evans. Chris Evans is like, he did

a great job and he's awesome at it. Yeah. I don't

know. It's really good. All right. Just fucking

go. Just go. Kind of just to get a finalized

idea of how we Felt of the original Captain America

going into this one. Like if we take all of the

phase one films, um, you know the original Is

that what they call them? Do people call them

phase one films? Yeah cool Now we're in the phase

two. Okay, or phase two is avengers and now we're

into phase three I don't know how it all works.

But anyways out of that original grouping with

with uh with the original Iron Man, and sometimes

they lump Iron Man 2 into that, but Captain America,

Hulk, the original Thor there, which ones of

those were you most, like which ones were your

favorites and which ones didn't you like as much,

Matt, for that first round of films? Well, I

think, for including Iron Man 2, Iron Man 2 was

kind of the weakest of all of them. Iron Man

1, again, I'm an originalist kind of guy. They

did a good job with it. I enjoyed it a lot. I

think I enjoyed that one. That might have been

the one I enjoyed the most in theaters. Looking

back on them, as I said a few podcasts ago, I

think that's the greatest Hulk movie we're ever

gonna get. Um, and so that one I want to rank

it high just because of that, but I don't really

like the Hulk as a character. So I wanted to

say the Cap America is probably my favorite of

all of those. Cool. What about you, Nate? Yeah,

Cap America. Okay, so you're both big fans of

the original Captain America film. I liked almost

all the first films. I didn't see the Hulk film.

I still haven't, actually. I don't know why.

I've just never been a fan of the Hulk, but maybe

after watching the Avengers, I'll give it a shot,

even if the Hulk's been portrayed by like a thousand

different people now. But I liked Thor more than

most people did. I really liked Captain America.

That was my first exposure to him as a character

really and the combination of just kind of geek

that like superheroes films in general and Kind

of the the history buff I guess kind of like

those two worlds melding and I think it's more

present. That's the thing like in all of these

With the Avengers that are included in this Team

up so far you kind of get a little bit of each,

like they each have a different. Just like sub

genre that they speak to you like Captain America

gives you a little bit more of the historical

side with you know The war the war and the Nazis

etc Whereas Thor gives you you know the the supernatural

the magic and that type of thing where you know

Iron Man gives you the technological And scientific

type things so I mean you kind of have it speaks

to a lot of different people when you team all

these people up together So I kind of appreciated

all of all the original ones My favorites would

have been real close between Captain America

and Thor actually I wasn't as huge on Iron Man

as everyone else was until later on And like

I said, I just have an aversion to the Hulk in

general. So going into Captain America 2 Did

you have high expectations? Were you excited

about it? What was kind of your your feelings

before the movie started Matt? Well, I was aware

of the Winter Soldier story. So going in, I knew

what the comic book expectations were. They did

add other side stories to it that were interesting

and a different take than I expected. Going in,

I had high hopes. I try not to do that. I try

to go in with low expectations so that I can

enjoy just the movie for what it is. But I came

in with higher hopes that I probably should have.

Gotcha. What about you, Nate? Yeah, I went in

with high hopes as well, mainly just because

it's Captain America and I didn't want to see

a bad Captain America film. And I don't think

I saw a bad Captain America film. I think it

was good. And I actually had pretty neutral neutral

thoughts on this one. I wasn't. Expect I didn't

have high expectations or low expectations for

once I was actually somewhat able to avoid that

and I avoided most information about it and since

I'm not I've never read any of the comics or

don't have that knowledge going into obviously

I didn't wasn't aware of the Winter Soldier story

So I really had no expectations from that whatsoever

my expectations this year as far as comic book

stuff the one I can't avoid being excited about

is as X -Men which I'll probably regret being

as excited as I am about it. But so this one

I was fairly neutral. Coming out of the theater

and we'll get we'll get to what happens in between

here in a little bit. But coming out of the theater,

what was your initial reaction, Nate? I remember

I was thinking like I enjoyed it a lot, but I.

I don't know. Yeah, I really liked it. You didn't

regret going to see it in theater. Well, I regret

I regretted going to see it in the theater at

the time I saw it just because of it was late

on a on a Saturday night prime time to watch

movie time and There was just a bunch of jerks

in the audience and I don't like that Yeah for

reference Matt and Nate saw this at what about

seven o 'clock on a Saturday night? Yep. Yeah

opening weekend. I saw it at 12 o 'clock midday

on a Sunday Afternoon so slightly different experience.

Although the theater was full for me, too But

I have a feeling it was a different crowd There

was like a kid narrating the movie behind me.

Oh my god. Yeah It was as bad as Matt watching

the room So yeah, I know everything I don't know

everything but I've read reading the book about

the room I've seen the room five or six times

and so like I point out things and Was bothering

going you were like, oh, this is the scene where

this happens and we were like, okay I did that

like one time you did it I Didn't mind it. I

don't think you can ruin the room That's true

Matt what about you you walked out of the theater

in your initial reaction is um, I I didn't have

one like I was You know, I was just trying to

rethink all over it. I guess really like it was

it was good. It was fun. I enjoyed it. It was

a little long for me and I had, you know, it's

like I was trying to not get absorbed into nitpicky

things that bothered me. There were a lot to

nitpick, I feel. Yeah. But I mean, I enjoyed

it. Overall as a movie, I think it was like a

well done movie, but there are certain things

in the movie that are just like. when you think

about them it's kind of weird. I guess it'd be

interesting to get into it a little bit more

because I don't know if the nitpicks and the

problems that you guys have with it are more

related because you know the history of the character

and you know the comics and the stories that

this is coming out of. I actually left the theater

and my initial reaction was I don't know if I

have, outside of a very few small things, I couldn't

find a major problem with the film that I experienced

in the first viewing. Like there wasn't something

that just jumped out at me like that could have

been done better or this person was a terrible

actor or that person was miscast or there was

a major flaw with this. There was a couple of

minor things where I was like, that was a little

jinky or something like that. But yeah, so I

actually left thinking That was better than I

thought it was gonna be and it might be one of

the better Marvel films that I've seen but maybe

in some reviewing I will have that opinion changed

I Don't know I Generally enjoyed the film though.

I thought it was good and I I can see where Matt

you're saying that's a little long at times I

think this one separated itself from some of

the other films in this universe because it wasn't

it didn't have that like action upon action upon

action feel that some of them have had. It wasn't

just like we're going to throw this action scene

on you and then before you can digest that we're

going to throw you another action scene and then

another action scene. There was a lot of um a

lot of storytelling I guess you could call it.

I'm not saying that it was like a very super

complex or complicated plot or anything, but

but there was a lot of story. I think it was

probably the most complicated plot of like the

current Marvel movies right now. And maybe that's

why I'm feeling that way. But I felt like there

was a lot more of actual storytelling and dialogue

and and that type of thing where I'm not saying

it didn't have action. And when it had action,

it did throw it at you tenfold. But. It almost

had a slower approach than some of the other

Marvel films have had. Well, I think that's probably

because of Like it's Captain America as a spy,

you know, it's not you know Thor as a god and

Tony Stark as an asshole. I Don't know Yeah What

about, I know a lot of people have had issues

with certain characters, specifically Scarlett

Johansson. A lot of people complained about her

in previous Marvel films. Have you guys ever

had a problem with her in this universe or how

did you feel she did in this film in particular?

I've never had an issue with her. I think she

did great. I love Black Widow as a character.

I've always loved the Black Widow. I will admit

there was one or two scenes in the Avengers that

were like... I don't know, like the one where

it's like her versus the Hulk and she was just

getting trashed around was kind of upsetting

because it's like she's really good. I thought

like in this movie, like anytime Cap was there,

she seemed less, but anytime it was her without,

you know, the super soldier next to her, she

was totally kicking ass and like I loved her

and I even commented I think right after the

movie or might have been later after I had...

broken up with Nate and was just with me and

my girlfriend. I said something to the effect

of like, I'm so upset that we're not going to

get a Black Widow movie. They said they're not

going to give a Black Widow movie. They want

to bring in new characters rather than just being

like, well, we're going to give her one finally.

Like, you know, so like I'm upset because I really

like the Black Widow character. And I think Scarlett

Johansson has done a great job. There was a lot

of articles this last week about About the idea

of her having her own film and whether she should

or not I saw like four or five different websites

that had articles that were basically like, you

know Should the black widow get it and get the

single movie treatment or not? So you would be

in favor of that Matt 100 % opening weekend.

What about you Nate? Yeah, definitely. I don't

I don't know if I would rather have a current

story or a backstory to her Yeah, they definitely

set us up to get some backstory with this one.

Yeah, there's a lot of Yeah, that's that's what

I was most hoping to get was more information

on her backstory because they've alluded to it

time and time and time again We haven't really

got a whole lot other than there's stuff that

she's done that she's not proud of type situation

Speaking of characters, I think maybe my favorite

part of this film revolves around two characters

that I think they nailed and Maybe that's from

my ignorance of this world and maybe you you

guys can shed some light on on it from a comic

book fan standpoint but I thought that the Winter

Soldier and Falcon yeah, we're done perfectly

for what I what I envisioned them to be I Think

the Falcon did like was really good, but I feel

like the Winter Soldier They didn't give enough

time for him and he barely said anything and

I don't know I've heard that from a few people

actually about they wanted more Winter Soldier,

they wanted him to have more time. I'm kind of

on the fence to that because I think, well the

first part that I liked about him, I just liked

the design, I liked the visual aspect of him

and how they designed the costume, the outfit,

the arm, everything about him and the actor that

they have playing him, obviously I think fits.

But I question if... Have given him too much

time would have taken away a little bit of the

the mystique or the the mystery I wasn't trying

to do an x -men reference there But the kind

of the little mystery that the character had

which I think added something for me like I kind

of liked that he wasn't talking a lot and I liked

that he was kind of this more like Like just

a mysterious character and obviously you get

more information as the movie goes on Etc about

his character, but I don't know, I liked that

he didn't appear as much or talk as much. Matt,

what did you think about him? I think I agree

with Nate when he said what he said and that

I agree with you when you said what you said.

I'm thinking on it and it's like he does have

a very interesting story and they've touched

on it a bunch of times since the original Winter

Soldier story came out like a decade or so ago

and I think it is really interesting and I don't

want to say fun, but I don't think that's the

right word for it, because he's an assassin.

And then he's a very straight -laced, hardcore

assassin. But, like, I think I need to see it

again, because I think they should have played

it up. Like, wow, I mean, he's been credited

with 20 kills in the last 50 years, and it's

like, oh, so he's just a myth. And it's like,

I think they should have played that up a bit

more. Think they could have had something to

I don't know if it would have been done in the

beginning or in some type of flashback or or

something where they showed him being Having

that ruthless bone in him Where you see an example

of him just having no heart and just being a

cold -blooded assassin because you don't necessarily

get him ever Following through on something major

where you know what I mean? Like he doesn't have

no Think there was a moment in the movie that

I shall not talk about that was kind of important

where he just totally Screws up a dude I Don't

think that's well, that's not necessarily spoiling

it too much, but I do like his entrance though.

I do I do like how they introduced him in the

film Yeah, I remember that scene. I was just

like, what is going on in this? And it's like,

oh, I forgot that that was who this movie's named

after. Like his intro scene was really good.

Well, Matt, what was your thoughts on Falcon?

Oh, my God, they like I'm not going to lie from

the earlier trailers. I was very worried about

how they're going to do Falcon and like it's

like, what is up with the suit? Like, what is

he like? How is he going to act? And they nailed

him as well as I could have hoped. Like I can't

I get hope they bring him in and Avengers 2 like

yeah, definitely Yeah, he he definitely needs

more screen time and I and I kind of like that

They glossed over his like suit. He was like,

yeah, it's uh, it's yeah, you know I was expecting

them to have that next scene being them recovering

it and then oh my god Yes Where it's like, oh,

it's just this like this this and this like that'll

be easy for us And if anyone that listens to

our podcast is a fan of the fantasy fiction podcast,

it was a total fantasy fiction moment where it's

like, we need this item. And it's like, oh, no,

it's going to be behind these 15 walls. It's

going to be an epic quest. Cut two, they already

have the item. That was great. Even the actor,

Anthony Mackie, he had a statement in an interview

that he felt like It was the first time that

the Falcons origin or backstory has been done

right. Nice. I don't know how it's been done

in the past, but is that something is that a

statement that you agree or disagree with? I,

I'm not going to lie. I've read a lot of Avengers

with the Falcon in it. I've never read up on

his backstory and I think they did a great job

with this backstory. So I'm going to say he's

right. Matt says he's right. No, I think. I think

what they have right now in the Captain America

franchise is they have a perfect Captain America

and a perfect Falcon. They should do a Captain

America Falcon movie just like focusing entirely

on those two characters. For those that don't

know, obviously, MWIRE Weekly here. We don't

usually get into too much of spoilers or try

to give away too much. There will be a regular

episode on Captain America, which they will be

going in depth and either tearing it apart or

putting it on a pedestal and they'll be dissecting

all the little bits and pieces. But that being

said, we might have a couple of moments where

we do spoil something and then conversation here.

And if we do, we will we will warn you about

that. But Nate, what was maybe your what were

some of the Quickly like you're the things you

had the most problem with what were some of the

if you had to nitpick? What were some of the

major problems you had with the film? Well Am

I allowed to spoil anything? Yeah, we'll just

throw a spoiler alert right here If you would

like to avoid any Captain America spoilers, please

skip to the 1 hour 27 minute 35 second mark Alright

cool There's just like a couple of things like

and these are these are incredibly nitpicky and

whatever the this the movie doesn't it's not

a worse movie because of this but it's just like

There was a moment where he was the the one bad

guy was talking to Nick Fury and he's like He's

like your your your retinal scan isn't in the

system anymore. We deleted it And then, uh, he's

like, yeah, well, how about the other eye? And

then he just uses his other eye and it works.

And it's like, why would that work? It makes

no sense. They deleted your record. They shouldn't

even have that eye on the record. I, I don't

know if I missed something where he like replaced

his eye with someone else's eye or something,

but it's just. I was completely thrown off by

that as well. That was probably one of the two

major moments in the film where I was just like.

Huh? Because either it makes sense if you have

someone else's eye, but we've never been shown

that scene. If it's just his damaged eye, then

when they did the original retinal scan, either

it would have been in the system, which they

would have deleted with everything else or. That

didn't make any sense And everyone wants to see

your eyes so let's write into the script a place

where you couldn't show your eye Yeah, exactly

and and like I feel I feel like most of the audience

thought it was a huge moment and it's like yeah

We get to see his eye and it's just like it's

it's I don't know. It looks like a blind eye.

I don't scratch on it But no, um also what a

really cool Easter egg on the tombstone I didn't...

Well, again, spoilers. Nick Fury's Tombstone.

It said the Ezekiel passage from Pulp Fiction.

Oh, jeez. Yeah. It's awesome. I knew it. Oh,

my God. That's so good. Nice. And you guys, you

can feel free to get all your spoilers out of

the way now. We won't have to. We'll just tell

people. We'll edit this part that I'm saying

right now out. But we're just going to give them

a time stamp to jump to to avoid all the spoilers

so we can just get them all out right now. But

what were we just talking about? I think the

whole concept of Like, we've built this thing

that'll float in space, and it'll just kill anyone

the American government thinks is gonna be a

terrorist, maybe. I don't think that would ever

get approved by anyone, and we'd be immediately

invaded by everyone. Yeah, it would definitely

cause, like, a huge world war. Did you guys hear

all the names that they were listing? Wait, here?

No, did you guys hear in the movie when they

were listing off different targets that it was

gonna have on its list? No. because they were

they showed a thing where it was uh well they

they showed a scene basically where they were

showing the radar and it would yeah at one point

it would grab someone and there would be names

next to them or whatever and i there was one

where it was uh where it was tony stark um where

it like pinned up on him i think it was tony

stark it said something stark and i thought it

said tony stark and then there was another one

that said i believe the the name of another Comic

book character. Is there somebody named? Stephen

strange. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah, the

guy did say yeah Yeah, dr. Strange. So I think

there was some interesting Things they kind of

threw in there. Yeah, that was totally a hint.

I'm sure yeah I guess my only other complaint

and it shouldn't really be a complaint. It's

I guess I'm morbid Because this is the ninth

ninth film in this universe so far Okay, I believe

And for some reason part of me wants another

major Character or so to to be killed out of

the universe They had a lot of chance to do that

and they specifically didn't yeah, like I understand

that the that the one agent got killed and You

know the Avengers film No, he didn't oh he didn't

he came back to See, I just feel like this far

into the thing and there's like, maybe it's just

me, but I don't picture this universe going.

30 more years into the future regardless of how

far they have it mapped Like so wait when so

like when when Nick Fury died were you like,

yes, they're doing something cool Yeah, cuz I

was that way too. I was like, holy shit. They

killed Nick Fury Really? Yes, they're doing something

cool, but it was like this is more realistic

now because if we're nine films in and we have

X number of films to go like do we need every

single character to last through the entire universe

of films intact. I mean, I know it's a comic

book thing and it's a superhero thing that most

people just seem to come back and come back and

come back, but there's deaths in the comic books,

right? Yeah, that's a comic book thing. They

die and they come back. Yeah, I guess. I don't

know. I guess I just want like a character of

some sort to not make it through. Captain America

died. Came back like two years later or something.

Gotcha. His death was actually the worst death.

And I know they have this mapped out for a long

time, but I'm assuming they'll do different properties

in different groups of people. So if you're only

doing three or four films of each of these people,

at one point, I want somebody to not make it.

Because not because I'm morbid and want somebody

to die, but because I think it adds a sense of

realism to you can't just expect all of your

heroes to make it all the way through every single

film. Well, I mean there's what they've got their

movies mapped out for 14 years But they've only

got Chris Evans for what three or four more movies

and you know Robert Downey jr. Is not gonna do

Iron Man forever Yeah, so like are they going

to come off or they just gonna be all like well

now we're retiring at the age of 37 because 35

Yeah, so I don't know that was like a minor nitpick

was that especially when they teased it with

Nick Fury almost dying Like I was actually thinking

oh this makes sense like we're actually gonna

have a character die I'm all for that etc But

obviously that didn't happen Did you guys? Well,

I didn't give you a chance to talk about what

were your most nitpick moments or what was a

moment that you kind of that stood out that you

Preferred to be done a different way. Well, I

minor really like I don't know minor nitpicks

like like I feel like um... explosions affected

uh... the black widow differently depending on

when they were like similar -sized explosions

like like the boat explosion versus the RPG on

the street explosion versus like the explosion

at the end they all seem to affect her differently

um... like it's like what was the shrapnel that

should be like injuring her permanently uh...

and then like uh... The way a soldier wears a

mask until it gets taken off and then he just

stops wearing the mask and it's like did the

mask serve a function or not? If it's literally

just to hide your face from one guy in the whole

world Why? That's true. And if it and if it's

like if it does serve a function Why did you

stop wearing it once I got taken off once? That's

a good point. I did not think about that when

I was That one bothered me a little bit more

than it should have but it did I still think

it's like way too nitpicky like yeah, I mean

it's just I try not to be nitpicky ever because

if you get into that then you're just not enjoying

a movie because you want to nitpick and you Like

I don't go to a movie to find flaws in movies.

I go to a movie and enjoy myself. So I think

you can do both I can watch a movie and completely

enjoy it and then as I think about it later start

to come up with stuff that might be a problem

or might not work, you know, contextually with

the with the plot or this, that and the other.

But it doesn't take away from the initial enjoyment

I have. For me, it adds another level of I'm

thinking about it, you know, again, or I'm just

kind of living on after the experience that I

can enjoy it on a different level, I guess. But

last bit of spoilers I wanted to get into before

we kind of go back to some general thoughts was

the end credit scenes and First of all, can I

just say? Again, this is the ninth film in this

universe Why when the movie ends is half the

theater getting up and leaving? Yeah One of our

party said that exact same thing is like they

know it's a Marvel movie, right? This isn't new

It's not it's no longer like it was the first

couple times where you're sitting there like

wondering are they gonna do it again like cuz

right away it wasn't like a given like the You

know, so like the second film you're like, well,

I remember there was a credit scene in the first

film So I'm gonna stick around. Oh, they did

it again at that point. Okay, it's gonna happen

every single time There were nine films in it

that's done at every film Yeah, oh, I there's

there might be people out there. They just don't

care and they're like whatever I'll find on the

internet I need to get my car and get home now

Sure, I don't rush two minutes to wait for the

end of this credit scene I can see not waiting

for the second and credit scene because that

kind of at this point traditionally is not as

important. It's just kind of more of an entertainment

one whereas the first end credit scene usually

gives you some type of tip or some type of kind

of connection to something else they're doing

or you know the next film etc. So giving each

of you a chance, Matt what was your initial reaction

to or what did you think of the both of the end

credit scenes? What was the first one? The first

one is the one where they show Loki's staff and

then the twins. Oh yeah. Oh, that was the first

one? And the second one was just where they show

a Bucky. Oh, okay, okay, okay. Yeah. Sorry. No,

the first one was very interesting because it's

pretty much got to be Quicksilver and the Scarlet

Witch, Magneto's children. Right. Because, I

mean, that's what their power is set and the

fact that they're siblings and kind of the design,

but not really of them. so like it's my immediate

initial reaction was shouldn't those be Sony's

right now hmm they're Magneto's children like

those are so closely tied into the X -Men movie

or the X -Men comics they're more X -Men than

the Revengers by a long shot yeah it's gonna

be weird like there's gonna be mutants they can't

be yeah and they're not gonna mention Magneto

at all and yeah That was uh, that was something

we talked about or the Right when we first started

my weekly because there was news that came out

that that Well, there was there's news that came

out that both characters were going to appear

in both, you know the Avengers and in X -Men

the X -Men films and we were trying to figure

out how that was gonna work and and how they

got around that and there was a Story that came

out that there are certain characters that aren't

tied to one of the properties Like specifically

and it's not just Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch

I think there's a couple other characters as

well that aren't pinned legally I guess or whatever

however you want to kind of phrase it to either

Sony or to Disney and that kind of leaves them

in that state where they can be in both films

and it was we were wondering how they were gonna

do that and how they were going to have them

in both universes and what kind of the play around

would be. I have to say that I was an idiot during

the first end credit scene because I completely

was focusing on the guy with the monocle, the

bad character that was kind of like the head

guy in that scene. Yeah. And I was so I was like,

man, if I knew comics better, I would Probably

know who this guy is like I feel like I should

know who this is like this is an important guy

and I completely ignored the fact that they were

even showing the twins I didn't even like it

didn't even register in my brain Wow, so I missed

like the major part of that credit scene because

I was so focused on Who is this guy? And I think

I should know who this guy is. Baron Strucker

is important. He's like Arnim Zola important,

maybe a step below, which is a step below the

red skull. They're important Hydra generals.

So yeah, he is pretty important. I would argue

generally, in my Marvel experience, more important

than Scarlet Witch or Quicksilver, but I don't

think that's what they're trying to do with these

movies. Gotcha. um nate i didn't get your reaction

from that scene i just liked how uh the audience

was so like gaspy over stuff like oh my god they

knew that they were supposed to gasp at the end

scene because it's like there's a reveal and

i just i don't know i felt like it wasn't more

at the site of the twins or more at loki staff

The staff? Yeah, they were like, oh, it's that

thing that was in that movie I saw! It's like,

that guy held that thing, I have no idea what

it does, so I'm gonna gasp, collectively. It

was a weird moment. We had a weird audience with

us. It sounds like it. What about the second

end scene? Any value whatsoever in that scene,

or was it worth staying to watch that little

shot of... No. I'm going to say totally. I'm

going to go with the exact opposite of Nate for

the first time in my life. Love you, Nate. It's

the second time. Not Time Goes to Marry. That

one show that's like Time Goes to Marry, but

suck. Yeah, I think, well, I don't even want

to talk about the future of Captain America,

but like what we were talking about earlier,

I think they could set Bucky up. that we're still

in spoiler mode. Set him up for what he future

does and making him into an eventual good guy

could be an interesting thing. I would love to

see his development as a character as maybe like

a gray area character and then eventually a good

guy or gray area character that eventually dies

either way in the future movies. I'm interested.

All right well we will end the spoiler part now

so we'll give them a mark to go to. All right,

another general question here, because maybe

I'm the only one that had this issue. I don't

know. I haven't seen anybody that's been writing

reviews on online saying anything about it. But

what was your opinion of the CGI and the visual

aspect of this film in general, like what they

did digitally compared to realistically, I guess?

Did you guys have any times where you've where

you felt you were watching CG? No, I mean it

gets it's harder and harder to tell And I mean

I mean obviously like all the huge explosions

and the huge hella carriers and stuff They were

probably done CG, but it's it's so well done

that it I don't think about it as CG when I watch

it The only time I had a slight issue where it

looked fake to me, even though I love how they

handle the character and I love the look of the

character and most of the stuff they did, there

was a few times with Falcon that either how he

landed or how he came out of the air and into

like walking again, et cetera. There was a few

of those times where it looked fake to me. It

looked like he was on wires, probably. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah, I can see that. But outside of that

I didn't really have too many visual problems

with the film and like I said there's just a

couple moments with Falcon where I felt a little

disjointed where it kind of took me out of the

experience of watching a movie and said you know

because I for me I watch a film and I want to

be immersed into that and if something happens

like bad acting or or Some type of visual thing

where it kind of takes me back out for a second

I noticed that right away and it happened like

two times with Falcon, but outside of that. I

didn't have any major issues Matt No, I didn't.

The CG was really well done and it didn't take

me out of it at all. All right. Final thoughts

or do you have anything else that you guys would

like to talk about as far as the film goes and

anything, any issues or moments that you would

like to bring up and discuss? There was something

but I lost it. I know that it's like one of the

things that like when you see account in the

comic books when Captain America throws a shield

You'll have like an action line and then it'll

have like a bunch of points where it hits a bunch

of people and you're like He had all those dudes

with the shield in the movie. It's way more brutal

looking and don't hit people with your shield

They will die or be severely maimed Yeah, I thought

the stuff that they did with a shield that's

weird because they nothing that they they've

mastered the visual aspects of the shield. Yeah.

Yeah. Like that all is just a seamless like it

looks so great and it's like so fun to kind of

watch the path of what the shield does. It actually

somewhat reminds me of the shield use in the

the Marvel Lego video game because when you have

when you play as Captain America you can throw

the shield and you can like click on like Eight

different things that you wanted to hit before

it comes back to you and then you can throw it

and it's like BAM BAM BAM BAM and some kind of

fun It reminded me of that. So I definitely like

that As far as like a final rating If you were

giving this one, you know on our five -star scale

Nate, where would you go one through five? You

can give half points if you'd like I always gotta

go first. All right, Matt. Go ahead. Yay It's

funny because they went first once I'm gonna

give it a 3 .5 I'm gonna say like I you know

It's it's it's I think it could be a little bit

shorter. I think with that length. They could

have done a bit more I think the story was fairly

solid with a few nitpicky problems I enjoyed

it. I'm willing to see it in theaters again even

but it's not gonna be Probably not my top 10

for the year. I forgot to mention that there

was a cameo from a UFC wrestler or UFC fighter

in this. Oh Bartok. Yeah, George St. Pierre and

it took me a few scenes to realize who that was.

Obviously, he didn't have a lot of lines. Nate,

what about your ranking? I'd probably give the

original a 4 .5 and this probably a 4. Do you

agree that the originals Better Matt, I forget

that you said after seeing this when you say

the first one's better. Yeah, I'd say the first

one's better, but it's it's close Just solidly

better, but this one's good. This one's good.

Go see it. Yeah, the difference for me Like the

Iron Man films Have a lot of the same feel and

like the the Thor films for me have the same

feel but Captain America 1 and Captain America

2 are two completely different films As far as

oh, yeah, definitely the tone is completely different

right the setting the tone what they're trying

to accomplish The only thing that's consistent

is Captain America like he stays the same character

in both movies and it's awesome That's what you

want. Yeah as for my reading I'm going to actually

agree with Matt and I'm going to give this one

a three and a half at this point out of five

I don't You know, he said it probably won't be

in his top 10 films of the year. I don't even

know if it will be, even if you take the sub

-genre of superhero films, if it will be the

best of the year. I think it's got some stiff

competition left to still come out this year

between X -Men and Guardians of the Galaxy and

Spider -Man in there and some other stuff. So

it'll be interesting to see how they all play

out, but there's room for somebody to beat it,

that's for sure. But overall, I thought it was

a good experience, a fun movie to watch. And

I still don't think Marvel has slipped up yet.

No. Yeah, they haven't had a terrible movie.

Yeah, they haven't laid an egg yet. So we'll

still wait and see if they ever do that. All

right, so as far as coming attractions go, coming

out on Blu -ray this week is nothing. Yeah, let's

fuck it. We do have one thing the hobbit desolation

of smog comes out I Love Lucy the ultimate season

one Believe but as far as in the the original

season one they released like five years ago

But as far as the major releases, it's just a

hobbit this week. That will be the big moneymaker

as far as DVD Blu -ray releases. As far as theater

releases, one thing you should know, when a movie

like Captain America comes out, sometimes films

don't want to try to compete with that. And that

is an example of what's happening this week as

nothing comes out. No. Draft Day, Kevin Costner

does another sports film, movie comes out. And

then we have animated film Rio 2. So we'll see

how Rio 2 affects the other Muppets and some

of the other kids films that are out there these

days if it makes them drop down or drop out or

or how that goes. Really, there's nothing else

of note that's going to come out in theater this

next week. Do you think Rio 2 has any shot of

knocking Captain America out of the one spot?

No. I think it'll probably be Mr. Peabody, but...

Will Rio 2 come in second? I don't think so.

Divergent's still out. Divergent Noah still is.

God's Not Dead has been climbing up, hasn't it?

It's been staying pretty consistent. I know Rio

2 is just an animated sequel or whatever, but

the original Rio did do pretty well. We were

talking about Rio 2 as having an outside shot

of being one of the bigger moneymakers over the

course of the year, just because animated films

have a long shelf life, etc. But again, it's

going against some stiff competition, but it's

a different type of film. So we'll see maybe

people that avoided Peabody and Sherman will

go see this instead as their kids film for the

next few months. But yeah, Captain America should

stay at number one, I would think. Alright getting

into our credit conversation last week. We talked

about what DC character would be best for the

rock We also talked about casting choices for

either a new Indiana Jones or a new young Indiana

Jones and then there was just general feedback

on the site as well as far as Our episode on

the Grand Budapest Hotel Obviously a few things

have been brought up as far as audio quality

We are working on that. So please be patient.

We're trying to get mic situations figured out

for a few of us and just some general editing

things that we might be able to clear it up.

I don't know if everyone else is having a staticky

issue, then please let us know because we've

only had that reported by one person as far as

it sounding like an AM radio that's not quite

on the right channel. I don't believe that was

from our end. I think that might have been the

listener and something that was set on his settings.

But if everyone else is having fuzzy problems

like that, please let us know in the comment

post so we can try to get to the bottom of what's

causing that, because we're not hearing that.

We'll work on the equalization part as far as

getting all our levels in sync, but I don't hear

anything staticky. I've listened to every single

episode myself. I would suggest trying it on

a different device. If you're listening on a

phone, listening on a computer, if you're listening

on a computer, listening on a iPod, if you are

having that problem. and they get back to us

we'll we're definitely looking into everything

yeah and we might need to know like what kind

of device you're listening on and etc so we can

try to figure out what that is um also had uh

some some comments as far as uh my comments on

the scarface uh remake and i promised that i

would address that here so i'll try to get that

done fairly quickly um but basically he was saying

that uh this is super film fan 98 he was saying

that uh i shouldn't uh give the idea of a Scarface

remake a hard time because it's already was a

remake. Obviously it was made in the in the 30s

and then it was made again in the 80s. And I

guess my point that I was trying to get across

and I guess I was doing a bad job of it is to

me it doesn't matter how many times a film has

either been remade or not been been remade. I

think you're still entitled to have an opinion

on if it should be remade again or not. For me,

there are films that should never be remade.

Like, you should never remake Star Wars Return

of the, you know, Empire Strikes Back or something

like that. Like, don't remake that. That would

be silly. Like, it never needs to be remade at

all. There's other films that have been remade.

Let's say, like, you know, like we've had two

or three versions of The Incredible Hulk. Not

that they're necessarily remaking the film, but

they're doing the same, you know, same character,

same general story. You know you could do that

to a point and maybe you get a definitive version

of it at that point I would say don't remake

it anymore. It's been done the best it can possibly

be done So I don't really think it matters if

a film's been remade or not He was saying that

basically once the seal has been broken that

you can't You can't fault a film for being remade

a thousand times if it needed to because you'd

be hypocritical because it was already remade

I don't see that logic. I Think a film could

be made 16 times if the 16th time is the definitive

end -all be -all greatest Version that I can

expect from that story, then I don't want it

to be remade a 17th time So that was my point

you don't have to agree with it But that was

the logic that I was trying to get across with

that. I'd be okay with a 17th remake of Scarface

I just don't think it just the fact that a film

has been remade does not Have any bearing on

a future possibility of a remake All right other

comments that they had as far as the Rock and

as far as Indiana Jones. Someone mentioned King

of Kongs that Ryan Gosling as a new Indiana Jones.

I can actually see that somewhat. I think he's

somewhat the right age and the right kind of

charisma to do that. A lot of people just said

don't do it though. A lot of people agree that

Indiana Jones should not be remade. Lobo as far

as the Rock goes. Someone said Green Lantern.

I think they mean the Jon Stewart one, but I

think he's wrong for that too. Yeah, definitely.

A lot of Black Adams and Lobos like we mentioned

in the actual episode, so not a big surprise

there. I don't even know if anyone else got mentioned

besides Green Lantern outside of that. No, I

don't think so and we kind of gave our thoughts

on those issues in the actual episode as far

as a question from next week Did one of you guys

have something you wanted to pose to the listeners?

I've got one if no one else has anything Which

is um Marvel has their movies panned out till

2028 So what characters do you want to see you

get their own standalone features? Or even just

cameos or smaller or what teams do you want to

see like what Marvel movie do you want to see?

most most And then maybe what you don't want

to see like what character do you want them not

to bring in? Yeah, if we're gonna be the scene

Marvel films for the next decade and two decades,

whatever What should we see and what should we

not? What would what would get you the most excited

the rumor that this film is being made? And which

one would get you the most that could be Marvel's

first mistake That's a good question. Alright,
