Muppets Most Wanted Review

About this Episode
Today on MYR Weekly we'll be discussing which
Pixar film is receiving the rare sequel treatment,
Gem and the Holograms, The Little Mermaid, more
Peter Pan casting, and a possible Jungle Book
war. All that and more coming up on MYR Weekly.
episode joining me as they have the last two
weeks are Nathan hello hello and Matt hello hello
and we are all ready to give you a bunch of movie
news and fun and we're actually even gonna go
back to the original format this week and give
you a solo main attraction and that will be Muppets
Most Wanted this week but before we get that
to that we're going to have to take a quick look
at the box office from this last weekend to see
what exactly happened out there in movie land
and we have a new number one and a new both the
two of them some movies that opened are taking
the first and the second spot so 300 rise of
an empire falls mr. p riding sherman falls need
for speed falls and we have a couple of new ones
at the top first spot will go to divergent which
I was curious how well that would do and it did
well. Taking the number one spot at 54 million
dollars, which is over half of its budget in
the first week. So apparently there is a young
adult audience that was willing and wanting to
see Divergent, which is good since they already
have a whole set of these movies planned. Taking
the number two spot would be Muppets Most Wanted,
which brought in 17 million on a 50 million budget.
And then, rounding up the top five, we have Mr.
Peabody and Sherman, just under 12 million. God's
Not Dead? I must have missed what that was even
about. I mean, I guess you can kinda... It has
something to do with Duck's Dynasty, that's all
I know. My mom's like, oh, it's a good movie.
Well, that just, just under, or just over 9 million.
For that movie that kind of flew under the radar
I guess and then rotten the top five there would
round up with 300 rise of an empire brand in
another 8 million which means it's only about
Six and a half million away from it's a hundred
and ten million dollar budget So any surprise
from you guys just looking at that top five.
Did we expect divergent? To take that much of
a commanding lead or are we a little shocked
at how much that did? I'm a little surprised.
I thought Muppets would do a better showing.
I didn't think it was going to win necessarily,
but I thought it would be closer to Divergent.
Yeah, I am happy that Muppets was in the top
two. That makes me happy. I mean, Muppets as
a franchise, it's not like a blockbuster franchise
where it's going to... It doesn't quite have
the effect that a straight -up animated movie
does. I don't know if it's... I don't know what
the... formula or the secret behind that is that
it doesn't quite do an act in the theaters like
animated movies seem to do, but that's why I
was at least happy that it came in top two. Muppet
movies don't usually have huge budgets, so it
still should be a financial success once all
is said and done. Hopefully we'll get another
one out of it. Yeah. I was a little surprised
that this movie I'd never even heard of, God's
Not Dead, made it into the top five. That usually
doesn't seem to happen, but maybe there is a
buzz out there like you were saying, Nate. Especially
when it wasn't in that many theaters to do that
much money. If these numbers are right, it was
only in about 800 theaters compared to a lot
of mainstream opening weekends. You're in usually
like two, three thousand theaters. So that's
interesting. I will mention that a big drop there
for a need for speed Just under 8 million, which
means it is still not halfway to its budget so
Might have the makings of another addition to
the flop list for 2014 which Hopefully we won't
get a need for speed too. Yes, no more of those
Even though I didn't see it, so I guess I shouldn't
say anything about it But it seems like we have
a little bit of a switch in the trend, because
for all of January and February, we seem to be
talking about movie after movie after movie that
was just flopping, that was not even coming close
to its budget. And it seems like we have a little
bit of a shift now with a lot of these films.
Divergent's going to be a success financially.
Muppets probably. 300 Rides of an Empire will
end up doing at least over its budget. nonstop,
even, you know, Liam Neeson taken in the air,
that's gonna have a chance of not quite doubling
its budget, but it had a 50 million budget and
it's almost at 80 million already. So even something
like that did good. We know the Lego movie did
good. Yeah, it did. Yeah, Monuments Men has surpassed
its budget, so Ride Along killed its budget.
So it seems like in the last two, three weeks
that we've really seen a shift in and not as
many flops. But Need for Speed might be one of
them to join the ranks of all those films from
that first two months, which most of them I can't
even remember because they were so bad. And I
will mention, since we keep kind of... Going
back to it frozen, which I thought would have
a better week this week It's finally well under
the 1 million mark for the week or for the weekend
and it's Kind of kind of putting around not quite
making it to that 400 million mark. Well, I think
now it's out on DVDs so people can just watch
it at home so I don't know if it's gonna make
that extra two and a half million to bust that
400 million mark, but I guess we'll have to wait
and see. A couple other milestones that we'll
see probably within the next week or two. 300
Rise of an Empire within a week, maybe two weeks
should hit the 100 million mark. The Lego movie,
maybe two more weeks will hit the 250 million
mark. So those two films definitely doing pretty
darn good. And American Hustle is going to squeak
into the 150 million territory as well with its
kind of late Oscar rush. Anything that you guys
saw that you wanted to point out as far as the
box office anything that surprised you or that
you felt in need to mention? That hasn't been
mentioned already Well, let's take it. I know
we usually talk about theater releases later
on but I will say that the big The big films
coming out next week are gonna be sabotage the
raid to and Noah Predictions for next week. Who
will we see at top? Does a virgin stay there?
Or does something like Noah take its spot? And
I'm hope that I don't know You know, I don't
I think Noah's gonna do well even with all of
the overseas problems and it's probably gonna
Bump divergent. That's that'd be my prediction.
I Would not be surprised to see Noah at number
one, Divergent at two, and Muppet's Stand steady
at number three, but we'll have to see. I don't
think Sabotage is going to have the makings of
a box office success, but maybe I'm wrong. We'll
have to see how one of the, a lot of films like
that have been failing this year, so maybe you
can buck the trend. Alright. Moving away from
the box office here and going into some news
and we got a lot of it So we will try to keep
it moving as much as possible, but we have stuff
from all over the place We got comic book stuff.
We have Star Wars stuff. We have animated stuff
Just a lot of stuff say stuff a few more times
in this little segment First up, Fox releases
a release date schedule. That's redundant. But
Fox has stated a few things as far as stuff coming
out in the next few years, including a sequel
to Wolverine, a sequel to The Fantastic Four,
which the first one's not even out yet, and an
untitled Marvel film. We're talking about all
the way up to 2018 that they're talking about
stuff. Confirmation about A Taken Three, Daniel
Radcliffe's film Frankenstein? I don't know how
to respond to that. But anything that you guys
saw that either excites you or worries you about
20th Century Fox's release dates? Didn't they
already do a Frankenstein movie? I just think
there's been a thousand Frankenstein movies.
I'm not quite sure. No, no, no. I Frankenstein?
Yeah, it was one of 2014's flops already. Was
that Fox that did that? I didn't think it was.
Anyway, I like, and by like, I mean, I don't
like that they have a release date for Fantastic
Four 2, and like, glad to have one come out first.
When, I secretly, when studios do that, it makes
a part of me hope that the first one just bombs.
Not that I want Fantastic Four to be bad, but
when they already have greenlit sequels or trilogies
or like, five or six different films. I'm just
like, doing this that far ahead, I hope your
first film does crappy. So you have to redo all
your schedules. I really want this first Fantastic
Four movie to either be just amazing or to bump
so hard that they're like, wow, this isn't worth
keeping the title and give it back to Disney
Marvel who can make a good movie. What about
the idea of a sequel to The Wolverine? Did either
of you guys see that last year? No. No, I did
not. Okay. I will say, I mean, obviously when
we're talking about the X -Men franchise, it's
had its ups and downs, mainly down when it was
talking about the origin of the Wolverine, according
to most people. Oh yeah, Wolverine origins. Yeah.
But the Wolverine that hit theaters last year...
was, to me, a step in the right direction. I
actually enjoyed that film quite a bit, and I
like that they're gonna kinda play that into
the X -Men Days of Future Past storyline in a
way. So I'm not, I mean, Hugh Jackman, I don't
know how many more Wolverine films he can do
before he becomes not able to play that part,
I don't know. But I don't mind the idea of another
Wolverine, I guess. Anything else Nate from you
as far as any of those sequels? No, I don't know.
I just think it's weird when I agree when when
they're planning like Fantastic four two already
and the first one isn't out or whatever I mean,
that's not what's happening, but it's just really
dumb And and also I don't like it when they write
a movie planning on it having sequels Like it's
okay if like it ends on a slight like hint at
what a sequel might be but when it's just like
They plan the movie and there are huge plot points
that don't get resolved like I don't know that
that's really annoying because like they don't
focus on making one good movie They focus on
making the whole universe because that's what
you have to do in films now. It's kind of lame
I agree And speaking of we talked a little bit
about need for speed. How about the next video
game? franchise to receive a movie treatment,
and that would be none other than Splinter Cell.
And the article being published this week is
talking about reports that Doug Liman is in final
negotiations to join the project as a director.
And for those of you that are not aware of him,
he was the director on Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The
Bourne Identity, and a movie coming out this
year, Edge of Tomorrow. I'm not super huge on
any of those films. I mean, I like The Bourne
Identity, but you guys are much more into video
games. Does Splinter Cell the type of game that
can translate onto the big screen with Tom Hardy
as the main actor? Your video game. What's that?
It's your video games, go. Oh, sure, yeah. No,
I don't know. I don't see the point of making
a Splinter Cell movie when you could just make
another spy movie because... like the Splinter
Cell universe isn't like crazy like in depth
or anything it's just like there's a secret agent
and there's terrorism and you know it could be
another born movie if they felt like it the the
Splinter Cell license isn't really going to make
a better movie it's kind of like when um when
they made uh a Tomb Raider movie and it just
turned out to be a bad Indiana Jones movie It's
like, well, that's what Tomb Raider was. It's
a woman, Indiana Jones. I don't know. I like
the last line in this story. Could this be a
rare example of a video game adaptation that
doesn't suck? Which we'll have to talk about
a little bit later. But Matt, any thoughts of
Splinter Cell being a movie? I want to just asterisk
what Nate just said where Indiana Jones as a
woman isn't necessarily a bad idea, just that
one was a bad execution. Because the way you
said that sounded, I don't know, weird. But I
think it's just going to be Mission Impossible
with the NFL names. Which, I mean, I could do
with the Mission Impossible reboot without Tom
Cruise. Because he's getting a little too Tom
Cruise -y for Mission Impossible at this point.
But I think the gameplay of that game is too
slow for a movie. So it's just going to have
the name and probably not be a lot like the...
Or they're going to cut out the hours of walking
you have to do in that game. Like that you just
show a guy sitting around for a half hour waiting
for a guard to pass. Yeah, he's got to learn
all of the walking paths of all the guards and
then he can move. Why don't video game movies
have more tutorials in them? Yeah, or achievements.
Right. That's a good question. Not only do we
have video games being made into movies, but
we're gonna have possibly another TV show made
into a film, and I'm dying to actually have the
chance to watch this TV show in its entirety
so far, but the one we're talking about would
be Game of Thrones, and it's saying that there's
a discussion that's being had about the Game
of Thrones film. Nate, what are your thoughts
on Game of Thrones being turned into a film?
I don't know. I like it. I've seen the first
season of Game of Thrones. It was good. I haven't
had time to watch it all. But I don't know. If
they need a bigger budget to have some dragons
in it, then that's cool. They can do that. Although
I hope a lot of times when they take a show and
they make it into a movie, it just feels like
a long edition of a show. So hopefully it doesn't
feel like that. I'm thinking the thought that,
you know, that it kind of alludes to in the article
is that this would be a way to bring the series
to a close, that you'd have the TV series go
for so long and then this would be like the epic
conclusion would be, you know, put into a film
version. That'd be cool. It'd be like Serenity
for Firefly. I mean, yeah, I mean, I think that's
a better way to do it than just to have a random
two -hour long episode, which you can do just
by having a two -part or whatever. But Matt,
have you watched any Game of Thrones? Yeah, yeah,
I actually watched it as it happened in the first
season, because I have HBO. And I've read a lot
of the books, a couple of the books. I think
I agree with everything you guys said, where
it's like, it'd be a great way to end it. But
the one thing I said when I started watching
the show was, this is how all book should be
done, because a movie just does not have the
time. So doing a book as a 12 -hour TV show is
a way better idea. And so I think that that would
be a step in the wrong direction, unless it was
just the finale of the books. But he's got to
finish writing the books before they can have
the finale, right? So I don't know I'd be interested
to see this I like I said I've only seen one
or two episodes here and I really want to see
more because I really enjoyed those so I got
to catch up in time for this to take I guess
more of an effect for me but I like the idea
especially if they use it as something to close
out the series proper. Moving on some comic book
rumors here Kevin Fage obviously Head of Marvel
is he the head of Marvel or is he just I don't
know what his actual position is I know he's
a big shot in Marvel Discussing the possibility
of bringing some more female superheroes to the
big screen and the one that he was talking about
that He quote says I think that would be very
cool would be Captain Marvel Nate's Captain Marvel
bring in more female superhero presence to the
big screen. What do you think? I don't know.
It's not the Captain Marvel I would have chosen.
Matt, you talk about this. I don't know. Nate
and I both loved Ms. Marvel back when she was
Ms. Marvel. I mean, this Captain Marvel, the
comic books was just the, like, you know, she's
assuming the throne of Captain Marvel, the alien
who's died and gave her powers or whatever. I
would, I'd love to see it. I mean, female superhero
movies or something I'm interested in. All superhero
movies are things I'm interested in, I guess.
Except for Wolverine. I'm kind of done with him.
So yeah, I'm interested. But then we'll have
to see more news before I can say yay or nay
on anything. All right. And I know nothing about
the character, so I will not try to sound like
I do. Interesting story here revolving spider
-man as we're getting closer and closer to the
amazing spider -man 2's release Mark Webb who
is signed on to also be directing a third one
says that that will be his final Involvement
in the spider -man franchise and after three
films. He will be leaving the franchise. I'm
just gonna read a quote from you because I think
it kind of alludes to some interesting stuff
here. And that's coming from Markwell. We're
building out a more complicated Spider -Man universe
with characters that people haven't seen in other
Spider -Man movies. The Sinister Six, Venom,
and more. We'd all love to overlap with other
studios, but it's beyond my pay grade. That's
an interesting last little part there. And obviously,
most comic book fans and geeks out there know
about the different ways that the Marvel universe
has been splintered, whether it be Sony, Fox,
or Disney Marvel, and that it's preventing certain
characters from... overlapping with some of those
other movies. So it's interesting that he brings
it up there about that. I don't have a problem
with him stepping away after three films. I think
most people, after they do a certain franchise
for so long, need to kind of branch out a bit.
So there's nothing wrong with that. But I don't
know. I just thought it was interesting that
he said something about the desire there to overlap
with other studios. I don't really even know
how many more Spider -Man movies I need. They've
kind of been doing that character to death recently
yeah, I mean I I guess I'll wait and see how
this next one plays out, but I'm still skeptical
of this set of spider the amazing spider -man
Whatever it's gonna be however many movies are
going to do because it seems like they didn't
really know what they were doing to begin with
Like I understand they wanted to reboot it But
it was like they rebooted it and put that first
film out and then everything that happened with
Marvel happened and then all the stuff that's
happening with you know DC with the you know
Superman Batman stuff is happening and then all
of a sudden it seemed like they backtracked and
now they're like well wait we were we're supposed
to be creating this mega universe and whatnot
so now we need to instead of you know completely
going with everything we set up in that first
film we need to kind of abandon that we'll call
it the Amazing Spider -Man 2 but it really just
feels like the first film that's trying to set
up this major universe with, like you said, Sinister
Six, Venom, and all these different evil characters.
Definitely the way that this particular... This
is Sony Films. The way that they seem to be doing
the Amazing Spider -Man is kind of just, they're
going where the money is really. I feel like
the first Amazing Spider -Man that came out was
just a checklist of Spider -Man. They did cast
a really good Peter Parker, but everything else
it was just like, let's get all these stars in
here. let's just push this out as fast as possible.
And I believe it was made just so that they could
keep the license, because if they didn't make
a Spider -Man movie, they were gonna lose the
license, so... I don't like it. Right, and it
seems like the vision that they have now necessarily
wasn't there when they were doing the first one,
and it's like they're midstream and they're trying
to shift gears. For me. Yeah, and I don't know,
it just doesn't... it doesn't feel like they're
really, like, in it to make a really good movie.
Of course... Most movie studios probably are
in it to just make a lot of money. So yeah, I
don't know What about you Matt? I really really
liked the amazing spider -man and I'm very hesitant
about this next one like I know that they threw
a lot of stars in there but like the the Aunt
May and Uncle Ben they got were amazing like
Martin Sheen was amazing like And that's like,
I said that a lot when the movie came out. It
was amazing. It's the perfect adjective to describe
this movie. Because I don't think we're ever
going to get a better Spider -Man movie than
that. Really? Yeah. I really don't. I know you
have problems with certain bits of it, but I
think overall it's the closest to a good Spider
-Man movie we're probably ever going to get.
And they started with Gwen Stacy rather than
Mary Jane. From a comic book standpoint, I really
liked that movie. I'd really like that. I'm not
trying to downplay it. I'd really like The Amazing
Spider -Man 2. I think it was superior to The
Spider -Man that came before it in a lot of different
ways. I'm just questioning what the kind of the
train of thought that had, you know, in the minds
that were behind the first one and now with the
direction that they're going and I don't know.
I'm just not quite sure it's all going to be.
It's all gonna kind of jive, but maybe, hopefully
it will. Yeah. So that is Spider -Man news, but
how about some Jungle Book Wars? I didn't know...
We get this more and more nowadays where two
films seem to want to do the exact same topic
and come out very close proximity to each other.
We've talked kind of ad nauseam about the two
Snow White films a couple years ago where we
had Snow White and the Huntsman and we had Mirror
Mirror. We have the dual Steve Jobs biopics.
One that's already been released, one that's
coming soon. We have two Hercules films coming
out this year. So I guess you can add Jungle
Book to the collection where there's going to
be two versions of live -action Jungle Book.
First we have Disney and Jon Favreau's The Jungle
Book, which has Idris Elba. And now we're apparently
going to get one from Warner Brothers. And interestingly,
the director tap for this one is none other than
Andy Serkis. For those of you who don't know
who Andy Serkis is, he is the motion capture
guru that you saw with Gollum in The Lord of
the Rings, that you saw with Caesar in Planet
of the Apes, he's been involved with King Kong,
and apparently he is going to be directing the
Warner Brothers version of Jungle Book. Do we
need two competing Jungle Book live action films?
No. I don't think so, especially when you have
Andy Serkis behind the other one. I love Andy
Serkis. He always has really good projects that
he's working on. The weird part is usually there's
a clear like, this one's going to be better,
and then there's a clear like, this one's probably
not going to be as good. Mirror Mirror seemed
like it was... Not even going to be close to
as good as Snow White and the Huntsman. Not that
either of the two Hercules films were going to
be good, but one of them had The Rock and one
of them had whatever that other guy is. Yeah,
so obviously you go to the one with The Rock
in it, right? Right, right. Yeah, because you
smell what he's cooking. And the people behind
the two Steve Jobs movies, it seemed to be pretty
clear. But this one, I don't know, like, Jon
Favreau is pretty good, and Andy Serkis is pretty
good. Yeah. It's true, I don't know. Disney and
Warner Brothers, there's no clear cut. There's
still just like, there's not enough information
on any of this. No, that's true. I want to go
with Andy Serkis because I like him. I gotta
say though that his knowledge of motion capture
and that type of thing maybe comes in handy in
the live action material like the Jungle Book.
Yeah. Yeah, he's definitely got a leg up. So
I don't know we'll see as more rumors get I mean
obviously we have Idris Elba already being cast
in the Disney one We don't have any casting news
for the Warner Brothers one, so we will wait
and see what happens with that As far as sequels
and remakes for those people that have been waiting
for decades for another Ghostbusters film Maybe
some bad news for you on that front. Whereas
Ivan Reitman is no longer on board to direct
Ghostbusters 3 but Ghostbusters 3 will be coming
next year No way. I never thought that would
actually come out Set to arrive in 2015. Obviously
this has been a roller coaster of up and down
for Ghostbusters fans, like I said, for a long
time. Bill Murray was very much against it for
a long time. Then he said he would be in it only
if he was killed off immediately. And then obviously
with... He's spoiling the movie before it even
comes out. Come on. Yes. And then Harold Ramis,
obviously his passing shifted gears. And I think
that's what drove Ivan Reivend to say he just
didn't feel comfortable doing it anymore. So,
but apparently it is still gonna be coming out.
I think the rumors are that it's gonna be a younger
Ghostbusters squad I don't know if they're gonna
be getting trained by some of the originals or
even if the originals are gonna be in it at all
As far as the ones that are still living so we'll
have to wait and see but Ivan Reitman no longer
directing that one I feel like that's gonna be
a very like hacked up like mess of a movie Yeah,
I don't think people have been waiting so long
to see what could happen here, but But apparently
he still had a lot to do. Ivan Raymond still
had some impact and some input on what's been
going on so far, as far as I think story and
production goes. So maybe there's a sliver of
hope there. Matt, do you think there needs to
be another Ghostbusters? No, totally not. But
if they kill off Bill Murray, I want him to come
back as a ghost. If that, then this, for sure.
Yes. That would be incredible. Moving on to something
I didn't ever think would happen, but apparently
it's that time where all of our animated classics
get turned into live -action films. We're gonna
have to, like, go down a list eventually and
have just an episode where we talk about this.
I mean, we're getting Maleficent, Cinderella
is in the works, we've talked about Jungle Book,
we've talked about Peter Pan. Joining the group
in the live -action adaptation will be none other
than the Little Mermaid. directed by Sophia Coppola
and This has come out here in the last week.
Not only that she's behind it that she had a
certain person kind of pegged to play I believe
it will be the part of Ariel or the Little Mermaid
and that would be Emma Watson from God Harry
Potter fame among other things uh... a little
more than that i can't even imagine that like
in my head it just seems so weird well there's
a lot of animated films that you i mean i thought
i don't necessarily need any of them to be live
action i mean i'm excited about maleficent and
i think that's a cool thing where you kind of
focus on the villain and kind of do their story
it's all good and and what not but i can think
of a lot of animated films that i would consider
at least consider the possibility of being a
success live action wise and little mermaid would
not be one of them It was a share and what was
the she in a mermaid live -action film? Did you
say share? Yeah, like like the the artist like
it's not shared. What was it? She was enough.
She played a mermaid. I swear to god. Oh, no,
no, no. She was in Christina Aguilera movie called
Bump it. I don't know. That is not what I was
thinking about People are probably screaming
at their computers because I don't know the film
that Cher was in. We're all by computers. We
have IMDb. I'm looking up Photoshopped pictures
of Evan Watson as Little Mermaid. This is a completely
different turn. Oh my gosh. That made it so clear
that I wanted to see if someone else could see
it. Mermaid yes share was in a movie called mermaids
in 1990 all I can remember is that that movie
was terrible and they like splash only without
Good actors. I don't know I can little mermaid
really be turned into a live -action film Yeah,
I I don't see it I don't know we'll have to see
it could be another frozen wouldn't like when
frozen came out when I saw the teaser trailer
I was like ah whatever and then it was amazing
I don't know. I don't know how I feel about Little
Mermaid I like I said I could think of a lot
of other films that I would rather see turned
into live -action before that Speaking of sequels
and remakes that we have been another news here,
and that's all about Jurassic World Apparently
the original cast will not be returning for the
next installment of the Jurassic Park franchise
Darn, no Jeff Goldblum. Yeah, there was a lot
of talk about Jeff Goldblum and Who played a
grant Samuel? There's a lot of talk about them
apparently not happening. We do know that Vy
Wong will be returning as the doctor though.
I mean, so he is an original cast member just
not a main character And we also do know that
Vincent D 'Onofrio Will be on there as well as
Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins and it's opening
in just over a year can How do you guys feel,
first of all, about the idea of Jurassic Park
having yet another sequel and do they need to
have some connection to the other ones or can
it be its own thing altogether? Well, me personally,
Jurassic Park 3, I think, was the first ever
movie I saw in theaters and had the thought,
wow, I guess they can make a bad movie. Because
growing up, I just assumed all movies were good
because so much time and budget and everything
went into them. You know, I was like, I don't
know, 10 when Dresspark 3 came out, I think.
Wow. Really? Wasn't it like 15 years ago? Maybe
more? 1994, somewhere in there. The first one.
Oh, no, but the third one was like, yeah, late
90s. I don't know. 2001. Okay, so I was, you
know, 12. So yeah, I didn't have... I mean, I
don't really think we need another one. Definitely
not. I'd love to see Jeff Goldblum do a similar
character to what he did in the Wes Anderson
film. The Life Aquatic. Have him have a cameo
similar to that. No, I'm not dealing with dinosaurs
anymore. Like, I mean, I don't like to do this
thing when I can anymore, but just give me a
cameo and that'll make that movie so much better
for me. Yeah. Yeah. I'd like to see at least
something connecting it to the original ones,
but I don't see it. Like, they don't necessarily
need the whole cast there or anything like that.
But yeah, like you said, like a cameo or something,
so they at least reference that those people
exist would be good in my books. I don't know.
Yeah, some of the Jurassic Park films were good,
some were bad, but the first one was just so
good. And I just can't wait to see what they
could do, even to a higher degree visually, from
an effects standpoint. Should look amazing, at
least. Get Andy Serkis to mope the dinosaurs.
Andy Serkis can do everything. When we talk about
sequels and when we start talking about animated
films we get a lot of Dreamworks and we get a
lot of a few other studios What we don't usually
get a lot of and I was just talking to actually
to some people that work about this recently
We don't get a lot of Pixar sequels, and we don't
get a lot of good Disney sequels We'll have to
hold our breath because I know there's been a
lot of talk about a Frozen sequel, and if there
was a Frozen sequel, this is completely off -topic
and off -script, but if there was a Frozen sequel,
could it be the first ever, like, legit, both
box office and critically acclaimed, decent Disney
sequel? I don't know, man. I think a Frozen sequel
would be a terrible idea. Disney has never had
a good sequel. My girlfriend is of the opinion
that every Aladdin single is worth watching I'm
not saying there's not some that are fun to watch
if you're really fans of that like that Franchise
or that story and those characters But none of
them have been like obviously a lot of more direct
to video type sequels But but none of them have
had like the overwhelming like this is a great
film I mean you can find some stuff to like on
some of the Lion King and some of the Aladdin
sequels, but there hasn't been like just that
definitive like this is a good disney sequel
like you have with like a toy story 2 or a toy
story 3 or something like that and dreamworks
you know just beats their franchises to death
over and over and over again so i mean i guess
there's probably some good sequels in there and
some that are really awful But the new story
coming out this week was about the potential
for some Pixar sequels, which we usually don't
get a lot of. Obviously we've had the Toy Story
franchise, but Ratatouille never received any
type of sequel. Wall -E didn't. Up didn't. I
don't think there's been any talk about Brave
having one. I hope they do. All intents and purposes
usually just consider Pixar just to be a kind
of a one -and -done which is I think One reason
why they've been so good because they put all
their time and effort into making that one so
good And then they kind of go on to the next
thing Well if there was ever a Pixar film that
people did Seemingly want a sequel to they are
getting their wish because Disney Pixar has confirmed
that there will be the Incredibles 2 Sweet Nate
you're a fan of the first one. Yeah. Yeah, definitely
And you think this is a, if they were to pick
one of their films to do a sequel in, is this
the one? Yeah, I mean it has the most potential
to have an interesting world because of all of
the different superpowers and stuff. And they
have a completely new family dynamic than the
first one, because it ended on such a different
um just like a regular family with powers now
they can do a full they can basically do a really
good fantastic four movie don't forget the baby
and a baby yeah fantastic five movie and uh on
the other end of the spectrum they also confirm
that there's going to be a cars three um anyway
but i thought it was funny because they originally
announced that on on twitter i don't know if
you guys saw that it was something like we're
a twitter genius I actually got this from a web
forum that I'm not going to mention. Someone
posted it on Twitter. Shut up, man. I don't even
know if I was on Twitter at the time. You know,
like, if I had my Twitter. This was like a...
Well, I probably did, because I think this was
last week. But it said something like, Incredibles
and Cars sequel. And it was like, oh no, don't
do it. Don't put them together. Like, how are
you... But, uh... Yeah, I don't know. Like...
I just like that every headline is Incredibles
2 and then there's always like a little sub -headline
or a little note at the bottom of the article
and Cars 3 also. Yeah, everyone expects Cars
3. You can expect that forever. Cars 3 makes
Pixar like 80 % of its money because of all the
merchandising that it has. Oh, I bet. You're
talking about Twitter. I gotta say anybody that's
listening that likes us or likes hearing nonsense
or likes just general I guess you won't really
hear us But you should follow if you don't follow
us on Twitter do it and then make sure you're
by your Twitter on Fridays Because we watch them
generally at the same time. We could put up warnings
saying, you're going to start live tweeting this
movie in 10 minutes. Get ready. Yeah, we'll do
that. Because we had some complete nonsense tweeting
last Friday. And hopefully, people enjoyed it.
I don't think anyone was paying attention to
us, honestly. Now they will. And they can see
all kinds of fun hashtags and whatnot. So anyways,
Incredibles 2 coming out. I'm all about it. Let's
see it. Let's do it. Let's see if Pixar can pull
off a successful sequel like they did. Obviously,
probably not to the level of Toy Story, but it
doesn't have to be that great to be still watchable.
If it's not about taking some animated films
and turning them into live action, it's about
taking some 80s cartoon series and making them
into movies. We're talking about an 80s dream
come true, so the headline reads. Jim and the
holograms live -action movie is coming GI Joe
retaliation director John Chu announces the project
on YouTube this past week Yeah, it's really weird
if you did you watch that video where he's like,
this is how we're gonna make the movie posts
on tumblr be in our movie Show us that you can
sing and dance and act and stuff. You can be
Jim. It's really weird or you can be the Misfits
Yeah, to me this makes sense though it's capitalizing
on a bunch of different stuff obviously you have
you know the whole retro thing where you're getting
the the adults that grew up with this stuff hopefully
gonna want to watch it and take their kids to
it but it's also you know this is seemingly um
you know a time in Pop culture where you know,
it's all about singing and dancing and stuff
like that and pitch perfect was successful So
this seems to make sense like they're doing it
at the right time if they were ever going to
do it I guess And I know there's a lot of people
excited about it. So we'll have to see are they
gonna do all of these like, you know kind of
auditions of new unknown people will they have
any actual Well known actors or singers in there.
I know that there's been a lot of people thrown
about there that people were saying would make
a perfect uh oh gosh what's the bad person's
name um misfit lady jim and oh god people are
hating me everywhere um i don't hate you the
the main bad character if you want to call her
bad character i think i've heard like kesha's
name thrown out there i think oh god of course
you know all these kind of Whatever you want
to call them there. I'm not gonna call them singers,
but uh those people I Don't know. It's like it's
like Pizzazz Pizzazz you're right. Is that the
bad girl? Yeah, okay, but listen. I just hope
that they They stick with like the either a retro
80s like aesthetic, but it should look like the
future as The 80s thought the future would look
like Like a clean retro future. That's the aesthetic
that I want for the movie. If they make it like
a modern day like, this is happening now and
it's just a weird 80s pop star out of place,
then I would be really upset with the movie.
It should have special effects up the butt. It
should have singing goodness up the... Well,
it's true, but I'm just saying... I hope that
they don't get away from the style of Jim because
I always like, I don't know. Jim's like so neon
and cheesy and fun. That's true. Matt, any thoughts
of a Jim film? I wasn't really big into the whole
Jim show. I've seen it a few times. It's not
bad. Yeah, I think I agree with Nate's retro
80s future. I want that in any movie. Everything
everything has to be neon lights Yeah We were
talking a little bit before about films that
were battling each other and I guess these Although
at one point were rumored to be coming out in
the same year That's not gonna happen, but there
is still talks going on about that second Steve
Jobs film the one that most people were more
excited about because of the involvement with
a sorkin as the guy who wrote the script. People
just assumed that would be better since Aaron
Sorkin was involved with it. Apparently, David
Fincher is still interested in the project and
is still being considered for the director, but
he released a statement or an article came out
this last week where he said he will only direct
the Steve Jobs biopic if Christian Bale is in
the lead as Steve Jobs. So the first one we had
Ashton Kutcher play Steve Jobs and now he wants
Christian Bale. So is it weirder that we had
two Steve Jobs films being produced simultaneously
or that Ashton Kutcher and Christian Bale are
the two choices? Yeah, all of that's weird. Very
weird. I don't know. I don't have no interest
in seeing a Steve Jobs movie really. I will say
I saw the first one with Ashton Kutcher. Ashton
Kutcher was better than I thought he would be
in the role. And it is an interesting story.
Like Steve Jobs, the story of Steve Jobs is an
interesting story. And his relationship with
some of the other kind of famous individuals
as far as, you know, that... Their businesses
went and how he treated them or didn't treat
them or how things played out. It is somewhat
interesting I'm kind of interested to see what
Sorkin does or what he did with the script But
I don't know Christian Bale and Ashton Kutcher
just seemed like weird choices. They don't come
to mind when you think Steve Jobs But I don't
really come to mind for me for most roles I guess
they both typecast themselves. Like, I want Ashton
Kutcher to be the big, dopey guy that he was
on that 70s show for forever. And then you want
Christian Bale to be Batman? No. No. And for
people that are huge Peter Pan fans, we talked
about a lot of different rumors. We've talked
about Hugh Jackman way back in the day being
cast for that. We talked last week about Rooney
Mara being in discussions for Tiger Lively. Apparently
now there's a name also being thrown about for
Peter Pan, which is Levi or Levy Miller. Fairly
unknown young kid. He was in an episode of Terra
Nova, the TV series. He apparently is being considered
for Peter Pan. So if you're a huge Peter Pan
fan, I guess look up Levy Miller and see who
might be your next Peter Pan I don't really have
much to say because I don't Really haven't seen
him in anything and he's just a young kid. So
I'm sure it's fine Yeah, I mean it's it's hard
to comment on something like that Yeah, so let's
get into trailer talk something that we have
seen stuff that we can actually sink our teeth
into not just rumors but stuff with We've seen
now in little bits and pieces some trailers released
this last week, including Maze Runner, which
I talked about as something that I was somewhat
intrigued in when Dan and I were doing our list
of 2014 films we were looking forward to. A brief
first look at the 3D world of Peanuts. A look
at Nymphomaniac Part 2. The first one's already
been released this year, but Part 2 is coming
up soon. Another look at Godzilla, our first
look at The Giver, which was another one I talked
about when we were talking about 2014 films.
Earth to Echo, another one we brought up then.
Step Up All In, one we did not bring up when
we were talking about 2014 films we were looking
forward to. Brick Mansion, starring Paul Walker,
Raid 2, Filth, and another look at some more
stuff about The Amazing Spider -Man 2. Who wants
to start on anything they saw that kind of caught
their eye there? I want to talk about peanuts.
No, go out peanuts. You talk about peanuts. Yeah.
Dude, they are nailing the style in 3D. They're
taking 3D models and making them look like the
classic cartoons. It's really well done. I think
that's, that's too, it's something that they
kind of took a chance on because obviously peanuts
have been around for a long time. And if that
was just when you entered the podcast, you're
not going to have a clue what I'm talking about.
Um, peanuts have been around for a long time,
but the franchise has been around for a long
time and they've always had the exact same look.
So it's kind of taking a chance here and changing
things and updating it. But like you said, uh,
it seems like they've nailed it. It like they
could have had a big old round -headed Charlie
Brown and have him just you know, like turn around
and be all weird -looking but Like his his movements
are jerky like the the actual show was and it
just looks great I'm excited for just Justin
just for the animation in that one and as someone
who just recently with my work it behind the
voice actors I I I actually gathered images from
all 50 plus Peanuts TV specials. Some of them
are a little peanuted out right now. But I don't
know, it looks interesting. It looks like it
could be an interesting and unique addition to
the franchise and maybe kind of give it some
new life. Matt, Peanuts fan or not? I love the
comic strip, like a lot of the movie specials
things. Not enthused about this. I don't know.
Really? It did not look like something that I
would want at all. I can see both sides of it.
I'm going to stay on the fence and see. I think
if they're going to go different, maybe they
nailed it as far as the style goes. But we'll
see here. That pretty much describes me about
everything though. I'll stay on the fence until
it's out. Yeah. What else Nate that you had that
you wanted to bring up? I don't know. I feel
like I should be excited for step up all in since
I'm a huge fan of like breaking but I don't know
Dance movies should be fun, but that's rarely
the case But like I'm a little set for some reason
I couldn't get the trailers for a few of them
loadups Step up was one of them and that was
what I wanted to see Oh, I kind of want to talk
about Amazing Spider -Man 2. Go for it. The transformation
for Electro, they showed him falling into a tank
of electric eels. That looks hilarious. I like
the classic, like, this doesn't even make sense,
but we'll make it work with... Comic science.
Yeah, comic science is a great idea. I love that,
although I just like everything else. I like
how they even like are showing the actors because
in that clip a lot of the actors are kind of
explaining their characters or what's happening
and when they get to that part like, who is it,
Jamie Foxx? Yeah, like even he doesn't have a
clue what's happening. He's like They're doing
some stuff with some gene splicing or some DNA
stuff and there was like an electricity and Like
he can't even explain it himself. That's okay,
though But yeah, that's an interesting interesting
way to take that I guess I want to say that For
the couple movies that I mentioned that were
ones that I was kind of intrigued on but it was
it was those that Dan and I were making this
list of 2014 films. We were looking forward to
and a lot of it You know there is there was trailers
for some films, but a lot of it was based just
simply on plots or or Directors or you know the
premise or some stuff like that So we hadn't
seen anything on a few of them and Maze Runner
The Giver and Earth to Echo are three of those
that we hadn't seen anything yet on but we were
all kind of in Both of us were intrigued on him
him more than me on some and me more than him
on some But this is a first look at some of these
films. I thought Maze Runner, I'm not sure. I
still think it's an interesting premise, but
it seemingly seems like it's going to fall into
that same... Genre that we've been getting a
lot of films where it might appeal to that young
adult audience, but I'm not sure how good it
will be the premise there obviously is that they're
all kind of trapped in this maze and and every
I don't know if it's every day or every week
or every month a new boy gets added to the group
and this trailer shows the first time a girl's
been introduced and Obviously trying to get out
of this maze. I was literally thinking like halfway
through the trailer like Jesus is a sausage festival
And then here's a girl and all I all I could
think was is oh my god. She's gonna get raped.
Yeah Yeah But then I remembered it wasn't an
episode of law and order. So maybe that won't
happen And earth to echo this is a completely
different look than what we kind of got We got
a teaser a long time ago and it kind of gave
us both the idea of the Super 8, which came out
a couple years ago. I don't know if either of
you guys saw that film, but that was interesting.
And A Little E .T. I don't know, this trailer
was completely different to me, and I'm actually
more excited about Earth to Echo now than I was
even to begin with. I think it's a cool film.
You've got a bunch of kids who basically come
into contact with this alien robotic type of
figure who can manipulate metal slash machines
it seems like Who obviously the kids form a bond
with and then you know the big bad adults and
government are gonna try to come Take control
of it or something. I don't know. I thought that
Trailer looks somewhat interesting. I don't know
what you guys thought about that one You summed
it up like You didn't say it looked like a robot
owl. I don't think which is what it looks like
to me. That's true Other than that. Yeah, it's
like a robot owl with magneto movie powers Could
be, could be interesting. Um, and The Giver,
obviously based on the famous book The Giver,
um, I never read that book, so I guess I don't
know exactly what to expect from that, but I
don't know, it looks interesting, I guess. Like,
uh, I've seen The Giver, and the cover of The
Giver, if you haven't seen it, which I doubt
anyone here hasn't seen it, is just like some
old dude's face. Right. And it usually has like
the medal for whatever awards it's won. Like
when I was a little kid, I've read a lot of fantasy
So I just assumed it was a novel about like druids
because I think there's might be a trees in the
background something It's like yeah, he's just
a druid And so this is my first experience to
it Was the trailer and I don't know just looks
like another divergent Hunger Games, etc. So
Yeah, I do think though You know you mentioned
that title or I'm sorry the cover and that that
kind of that classic look for it which to me
when I hear about the person that they cast in
that, Jeff Bridges, and he can almost look identical
to that cover. Yeah. So I find that interesting.
Nate, did you ever read The Giver? I have not.
Me neither. I need to read more. I am not cultured
at all. Hey, my sister has a copy of it and my
girlfriend read it last year and she she was
listening like she wasn't watching But she heard
just the trailer talking and she's like that
sounds like the giver and I'm like that's what
it is So at least they got it well enough in
that respect, huh? Yeah, anything else trailer
wise that you guys wanted to bring up before
we go to our main attraction? Unfortunately Godzilla
looks pretty dull to me. It looks like a dull
version of Pacific Rim I don't know. I'm not
feeling that one at all. There is a lot of correlations
that people are trying to draw to Pacific Rim
in that film. It's a giant monster movie. I don't
know. It's really easy to make correlations between
the two. I wanted to mention Brick Mansions because
it's got that Paul Walker who's dead. It's always
weird whenever a movie comes out of a guy who's
died. It usually translates into a little bit
better success at the box office. Oh yeah? Yep.
And then Raid 2, I didn't know there was a Raid
1. But the trailer for Raid 2, in fact, I even
searched for Raid. You got bug spray. Yeah. I
think Amazon was all like, it had a really weird
subtitle and I was like, that might be it. But
the trailer was like, just quotes, like a bunch
of quotes and very, very slow. And then all of
a sudden it was just like a minute and a half
of people punching each other in the face. Gratuitous
violence, like, this dude's dying and that dude's
dying. You were like, I'm all for it. Yeah. Mixed
feelings. I mean, I don't want to see Punchfest
2 without seeing Punchfest 1, though. Fair enough.
Alright, so that does it for our trailer talk
and all these links to the trailers will be on
the webpage and we'll try to make sure that they're
all working by the time we put that up there.
And it is time to transition into our main attraction
and we'll be right back to talk about that. was
never quite as good. That's right, we are ready
for our main attraction this week. We are going
to be talking about Muppets Mosawana, which is
in theaters now. But before we get that to the
Muppets in general, which we will talk about
the first one as well, I want to quickly talk
about what we started talking about last week
when we all had seen the original Oldboy. So
we'll take a drastic turn into a completely different
style film, and then we'll come back and clean
it up and cleanse ourselves with Muppet talk.
But Dan Nate or sorry Dan Nate Matt and I were
all able to watch the remake Reboot whatever
you want to call it the modern version of old
boy this past week so that we could compare and
contrast it to the original old boy and Who wants
to start with our reactions towards? The old
boy that was in theaters for about a day. Oh
my reactions That's the face I had the whole
time I Don't know um The only I don't know it
was definitely not as good a movie as the first
one I don't know I just felt there was less of
a movie and it was unnecessary to make a Remake
to that movie since it was only what 10 years
old or 12 years old yeah, I don't know I feel
like we could have waited a long time for that
remake my thought is Obviously I didn't see the
entire original old boy. I kind of saw the last
what? third of it, but it seemed like just from
that what I gained from that was that when they
had their violence and when they had their action
sequences It all served a purpose and it did
have a style to it but it kind of had us like
I said a style with a purpose whereas this one
that just seemed like I think Matt said that
when we were watching just gratuitous violence
for the sake of gratuitous violence Yeah, they
had a lot of that and then I don't know I also
felt like The the Remaking of old boy. They just
remade it verbatim and didn't really think about
what they were doing when they made it a lot
of the weird cultural things they just left in
like the the dumplings. I don't know, that just
didn't make much sense. The giant fight with
a hammer, it didn't make any sense. Especially
when they acknowledged that everyone had guns
already, like no one even tried to shoot them
in that scene. It was just really weird. Think
they set up the character much differently and
we kind of talked about this while we were watching
it But the actual main character is a completely
different character in the two films In the first
film it's this guy who gets drunk and he's really
annoying And it's just like, you know, he's not
a terrible person But he gets drunk and he's
not reliable and then this other one's like there's
this dick and everything he does is ruin people's
lives and then like you just don't feel for the
the American guy at all like I didn't feel there
was one second when I was like oh and then like
immediately it was gone yeah you had a much more
connection with the original character and he
seemed a lot more human and you could kind of
have a little bit of understanding and compassion
for him like you you're hoping things would somehow
you know not be as bad whereas the other one
is like I don't I haven't like But yeah, I think
you guys were talking about there was maybe one
scene at the most where you actually were like,
oh, I feel bad for this character. Otherwise,
you're just like, no, he's kind of a dick. I
felt more sorry for the the rats that he had.
He had a well, a mouse. He had a pet mouse for
like a day and then they just killed it. I don't
know. That was that was the most sad I was at
the movie. It was just like the mouse didn't
deserve any of that. And by setting him up as
this character that really just You had no feel
for compassion or empathy for Like by them setting
him up like that to me the ending doesn't make
sense that they use And I'm not trying to spoil
anything, but I just think he completely acts
out of character for about the last Oh, yeah
15 or 20 minutes of the film and does stuff that
I met that character as they've built him throughout
the movie would not do So I don't know I had
a lot of problems with it Like like Nate was
saying they didn't change a lot of things but
the things they did change seemed unnecessary
and wrong like Change the things that Nate says
and don't change the things you did change Yeah,
it's like some of the stuff they changed were
Kind of took key elements away from the story
that then make other elements that they left
in not work totally so thumbs down Yeah, definitely.
Yeah, it's really hard to talk about this movie
without spoiling anything, but yeah I don't know
definitely not not worth seeing go watch the
original and then I don't know plan to take a
nap afterwards Yeah, you know do something where
you can kind of route think about what you just
would you just seen and then hold back on any
desire to see the new one Yeah The guy who actually
suggested the original one to me, I went to him
at work this morning. It was like, don't see
the remake. Just don't put yourself through it.
Don't do it. All right, shifting gears completely,
let's talk about the most recent, not the one
that's in the theater now, but the most recent
Muppet movie from a few years ago, The Muppets.
The original reboot, I guess we can call it.
Which, Matt, you had not seen until recently.
We all were able to watch that film within this
last week here. Matt, as someone who had not
seen the film, what was your reaction to this
kind of reintroduction to The Muppets? I had
actually never seen any Muppets movie or the
original TV show. My only experience with The
Muppets was The Muppet Babies in the 90s. I had
an idea. Like, Ms. Figgy loves Kermit, Kermit's
silly, Fozzy has really bad humor, and Gonzo's
the one that's, you know, he's Gonzo. And so,
like, I had an idea of going in what to expect,
but I really enjoyed this movie. A lot more than
I expected myself to, because, you know, I always
go on the fence with kids' movies or younger
movies, but this had, like, it had so many things
that I was expecting that I wanted, and... didn't
have things I was worried about. I remember at
one point I was like, oh, they're going to do
that one cliched thing. And Nate turned to me
and went, yeah, that's what they've been doing
this whole movie. And I was like, oh, yeah, I
guess it's been enjoyable. It's poking fun at
everything that it was supposed to be doing.
It's like, these are the things we do. Isn't
it funny? And I was like, yes, yes it is. And
then I immediately, when it was done, pulled
out my laptop and bought the soundtrack off Amazon.
Right there. It is a great soundtrack. The question
is now, do you want your Muppet experience and
what you think about when you think about the
Muppet franchise to be these two films, or do
you have a desire now to go back and watch any
of the originals? Oh, I totally. If I could find
a box set with the originals or something at
a good price, I would immediately buy it. And
I do want to see the old ones. And I wish they
were on Amazon, Hulu, or Netflix so that I could
watch them. Yeah and there's definitely both
good and bad with the with the originals and
there's definitely a lot to choose from. I mean
you got the Muppet movie, The Great Muppet Caper,
Muppets Take Manhattan, Muppet Treasure Island,
Muppets in Space. So I mean not all of them are
as good as the other ones. So is it bad that
I really liked Muppet Treasure Island? No. Because
I'm pretty sure that's one of the ones that everyone
hates. And The Muppet Christmas Carol, I forgot
about that one. It'd be interesting to see your
reaction to each one of those and see which ones
you liked and which ones you didn't like a conversation
for another time But you mentioned the soundtrack
the music is awesome. Obviously a lot of influence
there from some people that we are familiar with
from their Flight of the Concords as well as
other stuff that they did And you could definitely
tell the songs that are most influenced by them
It had definitely their voice in their songs.
It was like listening to the Muppets sing Fight
of the Concord songs. Exactly what I want in
life. That's what everyone should want in life.
And I guess for you, I guess it doesn't really
spoil the originals. You wouldn't have had, since
you didn't see the originals, you wouldn't realize
which characters were from the originals and
which characters were new to the film. But one
thing I liked that the Muppet movie did was introduce
specifically one major character that was new,
and it didn't feel like he was out of place,
and it felt like all of them coexisted pretty
well, so I liked that. And I loved... the way
that they not only made a remake or a reboot,
but they played complete, paid complete respect
and homage to the original films in a lot of
clever ways that didn't make it seem overhanded.
Nate, you enjoyed the first one as well, right?
Yeah, yeah, the first Muppet movie and then the
new one here was really good. Okay, so we all
then went and saw Muppets Most Wanted and we'll
get it as far as you know, later on we can talk
as compared to the Muppets and see which one
we liked better, et cetera. And one thing that
you guys probably aren't aware of that we usually
do is when we have a main attraction that's in
theaters, we do give it a star rating, one through
five, at the end of our discussion so you can
start thinking about that. And you can give halves
if you want, like two and a half, three and a
half, or whatever. But we usually do that towards
the end. But first reaction, you went and saw
Muppets Most Wanted. You know, Matt, for you,
basically a day after you saw the Muppets. What
was your first reaction coming out of the theater
after seeing Muppets Most Wanted? Well, I had
seen a bunch of trailers, and I don't know what
I was expecting. It seemed a little different
than what I expected, and mostly in good ways,
honestly. It opened up with that song where they
talked about how sequels aren't usually as good
as the... the original and then they're like
well this is actually like our seventh sequel
anyway um which i thought those were both great
points um and so i didn't try to have too high
of expectations um i don't know like it was one
of those things it was like i don't know if it
was as good as the previous one but i definitely
would go and see a third one if they made it
i guess would be what i came out of the theater's
thinking i felt a lot of similar things there.
I felt like I didn't know if it was quite as
good as the one before it, but it wasn't such
a letdown that I still completely enjoyed myself.
I still found myself laughing to a lot of things.
And I felt confident that they had maintained
what they started with that most recent one and
that they left the possibility for success and
for more Muppet movies to come. And that's always
my desire is for as many Muppet movies as possible.
You know what at one point I would like to point
out I guess that I didn't mention was that uh
when I walked out of the theater I was like,
I don't know. I was pretty good But then the
more I thought about it and the more I started
talking other people I just realized how many
moments I just really loved Yeah, and you mentioned
the opening and for me that is my that was actually
my favorite part of the film the first 15 minutes
Obviously it takes a completely different tone,
not really tone, but it does shift gears once
it gets into the actual main plot. I almost wish
they would have kept just going with the way
it started. and somehow made a plot that kind
of kept that same feel that they had in that
opening. Well, I think what you're trying to
talk about is the idea of how meta the opening
was. Because they're making self -referential
jokes about it being a movie and all of this
stuff. And then they kind of get into this section
where the rest of the movie is all of them just
being in a movie. And they're not really commenting
on the fact that it's a movie or anything. just
trying to do a regular movie, and that wasn't
working as well as all the meta -jokes were earlier.
In the new Muppet movie, the one right before
this one, like the whole movie is chock full
of like in jokes and jokes where it's like it's
like hey look this is a movie ha ha ha we just
did this i don't know and and that that was great
stuff and i wish i would i would have seen more
of that in this one and i think even if they
did go into like the actual movie and even if
they kind of abandoned some of the meta stuff
like it wouldn't have been not that it was jarring
or whatever but it Like I don't know that you
have plots for what do we have seven eight nine
eight Muppet movies so far and and some are some
are more serious than others Some are more fun.
Some are more goofy. Some are more whatever and
like this one like you go from this Kind of making
fun of itself and and this kind of fun airy type
vibe And I get that you're gonna eventually transition
into a plot for this film but but we went from
that straight to like gulag and Constantine and
you know this like not that it was like super
heavy or like spy whatever but it was like I
Don't know. It's just like you went from this
and then immediately was like oh stop feeling
like that Stop feeling like you're having fun.
We're gonna go do stuff in the gulag Yeah, not
that it wasn't fun still there as the movie but
it was just like a quick like about face like
whoop shift gears and No, it was definitely fun.
That was a great movie. Um Yeah, I don't know
the only Don't know I kind of want to talk about
Tina Fey for a second because I love Tina Fey
and I've just I don't know I felt like she didn't
get to do anything as a character because her
character was just like so one -sided It really
depressed me because I love Tina Fey so much
Yeah, I thought she had her moments and then
it kind of got her parts kind of got old on me
Yeah, eventually and I yeah, I think they could
have done better stuff Not only met your thoughts
on Tina Fey, but both of you I'm curious if you
had a favorite cameo appearance Well, I guess
I'll lead off with a double on both of those
I think my favorite was when Tina Fey was all
like good night Danny Trejo I personally just
love Danny Trejo. I've seen Machete and it was
great. I've seen other of his movies. Nearly
as many as Nate has seen But I enjoy him as an
actor. I've seen all of the Spy Kids movies.
So his cameo there, which was a little bit more
than a cameo, really. I love Tina Fey in this,
and I get that she was kind of a one -dimensional
character, but I think she really sold that and
I was interested in everything she did and said.
I don't know I feel like I would I would have
liked it better if she was recasted as More of
a normal person instead of this Russian Like
gulag, I don't even know warden. Yeah Did you
have a favorite cameo Nate? Don't know I'm thinking
I'm actually thinking about the cameos in this
movie and they weren't as strong as the other
ones There is the one before this one I had to
this stuck out for me while you while you think
about it, and I agree I don't think they were
quite as strong as other one, but the two that
stuck out the most for me was number one Mr.
Hobo making because it was a cameo. Oh, yeah
from the movie previous that Galifianakis is
in it. Hobo Joe! Hobo Joe there and my other
one because I was curious who was doing the singing
when they kept going to the the guy that was
in the the chamber by himself and when when Josh
Groban came out I thought that was pretty clever
So those are the two that kind of got the most
chuckle out of me, but go back to some that you
liked Or didn't like I don't know. I thought
Ray Liotta was hilarious. Not because he was
being funny, but just because he was there because
I haven't seen Ray Liotta in forever. I think
I missed at least half of the cameos. I didn't
get who Josh Groban was. Nate told me later that
Jermaine Clement was in it and I didn't see him
at all. Like I just missed all the cameos. It
was just like people in that movie to me. Jermaine
was... Jimmy Jemaine was the bearded Like the
main gulag guy. Yeah, he was the inmate. Yeah,
it seemed that that was Danny Trejo to me cuz
Danny Trejo steals the scene I thought it was
great. I thought he did a great I thought all
those the gulag guys were pretty good and that's
something too mad that I guess you're not as
used to looking for the cameos but like after
watching seven other Muppet films like it's just
part of the culture like you that's something
you expect because that's just kind of tradition
with what they do with these movies so you're
always kind of looking for you know some other
ones that we had in this one what do we have
we had I don't know what name he goes by now
but Puff Daddy was in there. Usher? Yeah Usher
that was a good one a decent one too. Yeah that
was pretty good. Yeah, it is just chock full
of them, and everybody probably has different
ones that they like the most, but it's just kind
of part of the Muppet fun. What else did you
like or dislike about this film, Nate? Well,
I love the puppetry. The actual, like, the emotion
behind the characters, they've always done a
great job with that, and it's just amazing to
see that kind of stuff. That was probably my
favorite part about you're just watching Kermit
like a moat when he's just a sock puppet, you
know favorite Muppet in this film It's always
animal every time I see animal I'm just like
yeah He was a he played a bigger part in this
one than he does a lot of times and I thought
that was cool because obviously he was kind of
playing the animal role where he could sniff
out or sense You know good versus bad, I guess,
or the familiar versus the unfamiliar. I don't
know which character I like the best in this
one. I'd probably have to think about it a little
bit more. Matt, did you have a Muppet in this
one that stood out to you the most? Well, I relate
to Fozzie the most, personally, but I really
liked, oh, shoot, the evil Kermit. Constantine?
Constantine. I don't know, I think it was his
voice, and him not being able to pronounce things
at all, and nobody really going, wait a second.
I like that they reference that, and there's
not really spoilers in this, because it's all
Muppets stuff. That's like trailer stuff. I like
the fact that even at one point Fozzie's like,
or I think it was Fozzie who kind of like realizes
that he sounded nothing. Oh, I guess he didn't
really sound anything like you. Oh, but I got
a favorite cameo, it's Christoph Waltz. Oh jeez,
I forgot about his. Doing the Waltz. I don't
even know who that guy is. He was the one doing
the dance at one of the first shows with like
the big ol' huge muppet thing. He's from Inglourious
Pastry, he's the Jew Hunter. He's from Django
Unchained. Yeah, he plays German guys in Boldable.
Yeah. Yeah. Because he's German. Go figure. And
since we were in that, yeah. But no, I don't
know. There's a lot of good things about this
film, like I said. I don't know if I'd quite
put it up to the level of the last one, but...
Simber, what about the music in this one compared
to the... You said you went out and bought the
soundtrack from that first one. Immediately,
music live up to par or not quite? I don't think
it was as good as the first one, but I think
if I had the money, I'd probably seriously consider
buying it from the second one. Don't know if
it did or not, but it almost seemed like I had
more music like they did they went to music more
often in this one But maybe not I don't know.
I I think my favorite song though is definitely
the interrogation song I don't know if you remember
that one trying to think it's uh They're like
trying to figure out if the Muppets did the robbery
and they're singing a song It's a duet between
the the eagle That was a toe -tapper. That was
a toe -tapper. I don't know if any of them stood
up to the level of Man or Muppet or whatever.
I did like that original, the opening song, like
I said, but that's more because I liked the entire
opening of this film. What about radians for
this one? If we're going on a five -star scale,
what do you guys think about Muppet's Most Wanted?
Nate, what's your ranking for it? Well, jeez,
um, I don't know no I give uh, I give the the
Muppets the one before this one probably a four
and I give this one probably a 3 .5 Matt that
that was exactly what I would have given I agree
100 % with Nate 3 .5 for this one We're not supposed
to agree on this show. No, I'm just kidding.
Come on. Well, I think the issue here is that
Matt and I think so much alike that it's hard.
I usually just let Matt talk and he's like, yeah,
I'm like, yeah, that's what Matt said. I would
actually probably do the exact same, though,
too. I think. Oh, God. Yeah, I think the first
one gets four, really strong four. I'd almost
even consider going to four and a half but but
it really strong for and then this one again
Just a step below it. So if you're going to step
below four, you're at three and a half So but
it's still a good movie and you should all see
it. Yeah, totally in theaters recommend All right.
Well that does it for the main attraction as
far as coming attractions go some stuff coming
out on DVD Blu -ray here this week anything that
caught your guys eye outside of the few big ones
that I wanted to bring up which there really
wasn't much besides the Wolf of Wall Street as
far as films from last year Wolf of Wall Street
is coming out and there wasn't any other like
major major films from last year but anything
that caught your guys eye as far as Blu -ray
releases? Just the Avengers confidential Black
Widow Punisher but I mean that caught my eye
when we were watching it was an old boy that
had a preview for it and I was like that's not
a team up. Yeah. Also, Punish is not really an
Avenger in my book. Oh, Delivery Man, I guess,
was a film from last year. That's coming out
too. I didn't ever remember anything much about
that one. Missed that one last year on purpose.
And we talked about the theater releases. Obviously,
Noah, Raid 2, Sabotage, Caesar Chavez, a biopic
coming out. So some stuff there. It's starting
to pick up here. We're getting into a little
bit busier movie times. So you kind of have your
choice now. You can go see Muppets. You can go
see 300. You got Noah out there. You got Divergent.
So there's some choices as you visit the theater
next week, if you do. Anything coming out next
week that you guys are actually interested in
from theater releases? Any interest in Noah,
Nate? Yeah, definitely. I'm interested in Noah.
I'd go see that with you if you wanted to. We
will do that. Um, yeah, no is that at the top
of my list out of those I really want to see
how that it looks epic and I am a sucker for
epics Even if a lot of them are bad, I will see
them because I enjoy them It looks like um the
classic like charlton heston style like uh crazy
magic stuff. I like it. Yeah, um as far as Last
week's credit conversation we were talking about
We talked about Nazis at the center of the earth
last week and the question that you guys brought
up was The most predictable or more most shocking
the best twist the worst twist that you guys
have seen As far as the movies go and we did
get some responses there from quite a few people
anything that any of the Go ahead. Is someone,
like, shuffling foil? What's going on? Oh, that's
me. My bad. Come on. Anything that, uh, any of
the comments from the, uh, from last week's post
that you guys wanted to bring up of people's,
uh, twist endings or shocking endings that you
agreed with or disagree with? I can't get to
the website to see the comments. Darn it all.
It says maintenance mode is on when I go there.
Um... Let's see, I'm trying to remember now off
the top of my head. I mean, just for everyone
who has posted a comment, I've read every comment
on there probably four times. I also have a really
terrible memory. I'm the type of guy to refresh
it three or four or five times a day and be like,
aw, we haven't had a comment in three hours.
I do the same thing. Comment as much as you guys
want, and we'll try to respond to all of them.
Yeah, except for when the website doesn't work
and we can't read any of them. Yeah. Because
it's happening. It's not just Matt's computer.
The website is apparently down right now. I do
remember one guy said the least shocking was
The Village, which I have to say, as someone
who's a fan of M. Night Shyamalan with only ever
seen one of his movies ever, every time I hear
one of his endings, I'm like, whoa, really? And
so when I saw the previews for that, And then
I was told what the ending was probably five,
six years later. I thought it was shocking, but
that's just me, I guess. Well, maybe we can kind
of get into that. And before we try to respond
to comments that we can't see, maybe we can get
into our own choices for what we feel are some
of the best twists or some of the most obvious
worst twists that we've seen. in our movie history,
I got a couple off the top of my head here that
are some of the best that I remember. The twist,
I guess you can call it a twist though, but the
whole movie for me. Usual Suspects to me has
a great twist at the end. Have either of you
guys seen Usual Suspects? I have, I'm really
into heist movies in the last six months. I've
been buying up every heist movie I see. I mean,
I bought American Hustle last week without having
seen it just because I want another heist movie
in my collection. But I've been told... Since
the 90s the usual suspects has the greatest twist
ending so going into it I was sitting there dissecting
the whole movie the whole time So I wasn't half
as surprised as I should have been right But
I mean it I mean it was so well done that if
you didn't know that there was an ending I imagine
it was crazy that kind of goes to what one of
the people commented on with with Star Wars which
to me is literally Impossible like the percentage
of people that saw that film that could actually
appreciate the twist Has got to be such a small
number Yeah, I mean I got that that twist spoiled
for me when I was like in first grade The problem
with that is the twist is one of the most repeated
lines Yeah, you know in movie history it seems
like so it's like So many people had to have
that spoiled way before that, so it's almost
like it defeats the purpose of it at this point.
I think I knew about Luke, I Am Your Father,
before I knew what Star Wars was. Right. See,
I grew up on Star Wars, so I probably had that
as an original thing. I was just, you know, four.
It's like I can't remember being shocked, because,
like, I mean, I had those movies practically
memorized before the special editions came out.
Those are those were movies before you even saw
them you knew you're like, oh, that's that's
you know, Luke's father And then you're like,
what's I don't get this scene Didn't we already
know this some other ones that I like one that
kind of falls under the radar a little bit Arlington
Road I I've never heard of that. Okay. Well,
here's the situation. I and this is Kind of Monte
Cristo is one of those films that I always bring
up that that nobody's ever seen and then I show
that to people and 99 % of the time people enjoy
it. Is that on our coffee table stack? Yes. No,
Arlington Road is not. Oh, dang it. Arlington
Road is one of those films that I bring up that
nobody's ever seen and then I show them the film
and then they hate me for it. Now I need to see
it. But I really enjoy the film. But yeah, that's
a twist that I enjoy. And then Memento, obviously,
is a classic twist. Those were some of the first
ones that came to my mind. I guess for worst
twists, I got to go with Titanic. No, I'm just
kidding. What were some of your guys' best and
least favorite twists that you've seen over the
years? I don't know. It's so hard to pick a bad
twist movie, because if a twist is done poorly,
then it's hard. What about some good ones that
you've seen then? I didn't know he was the twist
guy, so when I saw it, I just was going in to
see a new Bruce Willis movie. And so at the end,
it was just like, what? What was I watching?
And I guess you bring up him. Sixth Sense, I
guess, has a classic twist as well. Yeah. I've
actually never seen Sixth Sense because the twist
has been ruined for me. So I feel like, what's
the point? That's another one where I guess there's
a quote that goes right along with it that is
used a lot. So maybe that can... plan to ruin
it for a lot of people. For good twists, I actually
really enjoyed the Lego movie. I felt like that
actually had a decent twist to it. Yeah, I can
see that. I agree with that. Matt, what about
a couple that you like? Unbreakable is the one
I had planned, which is why I kind of stole the
light from Nate. Sorry, dude. Any that you were
completely predictable on your end that you remember.
To me, that's hard. I was trying to think of
it. I know there's been a lot that I've been
like, oh, you didn't see that coming. Or I've
been sitting in next to someone that was watching
it with me, and I'm like, wait, that was a twist
for you. But then I forget about them, so I can't
even think of those movies. Um, yeah. Like...
Titanic 2 would have been such a great twist.
Ooh, it's spoilers! I'll bleep it out. Just leave
it as Titanic 2 would've been, and then just
bleep. Yeah, yeah. I gotta find that bleep sound
effect now. Now I forgot it, because that's what
happens. I guess there were a couple of them
that were pretty twist -surprising, but for one
reason or another didn't hit me. The first old
boy, I was just like, this is what's happening.
And then it happened like a minute later, and
I was like, I probably shouldn't have just said
that, just kept that to myself. And then, yeah,
there was another one then. I got a bad memory.
I mentioned that before. No one blamed me. Blame
his memory. Well, I mean, we can keep the conversation
going on the website, too. And I'm trying to
think of other people's other movies that people
brought up. without being able to look at them
currently. I know that brought up - Star Wars.
Yeah, there was Star Wars, there was Memento,
I think a couple other people brought that one
up too. Shoot. We all have bad memories. And
then there was that one guy, thank you to the
guy who brought up why Taco Bell was relevant
to Demolition Man. That wasn't a twist, but it
was something that we had all forgotten. Yes.
We always like to be educated by the listeners.
And we'll have to look back at some of the other
comments, and maybe we'll respond to them at
the beginning of the next episode, since none
of us can view them currently. Dope. I do have
a question for this next week, though, that I
just came up with over the course of recording
this. And we talked about the Need for Speed
doing bad. This last couple weeks and we talked
about the idea that a splinter cell Movie is
in the works. So how about this one for a question
for next week? What is the best or your favorite
video game adaptation? film wise Best and worst.
Well, what's the best and worst video game film
adaptations? We've had or even take it a step
further What video game has not been made into
a movie that you would love to see in movie form?
I could talk about this for a whole episode.
So we will have a whole big long credit conversation
next week with Nate since he is a video game
guru. So yeah, which video game movie is awesome,
which video game movie is terrible, and which
video game movie do you want to see happen? That'll
be the question for next week. And as always,
