Hi, this is Christy Marx, the writer of Gem and

the Holograms and Beast Wars, and you're listening

to GeekCast Radio Network. Today on NWR Weekly,

we have tons of trailers to discuss possible

Knight Rider casting and a discussion of the

latest remake of Robocop. All that and more coming

up on NWR Weekly. Welcome to MY Weekly, the podcast

dedicated to the movie week that was. I am one

of your hosts, Dan Clark, and joining me, as

always, is Kevin Optima Solo. How's it going,

man? It's going excellent. Going well, going

well. It's your winter. You surviving this awesome

winter? I am ready for it to be over. I guess

we got spoiled with some mild winters in the

last decade, and this is not one of them. No,

no. Yeah, it's saving up for one big... Pile

of dump over one day, but uh, yeah, I'm ready

for spring I'm like I'm ready for like this summer

movie season and just because it'll also be warmer.

So yes double bonus for those returning For those

return visitors are for those first time listeners,

we are MY Weekly. Like I mentioned, we have a

podcast dedicated to the movie week that was.

We'll start with a discussion of what we've been

watching recently. Then we'll move on into the

movie news and we'll head on over to our main

attraction after that. And this week we'll be

discussing the remake of Robocon that recently

came out. And we'll finish up with our credit

conversation where we discussed the feedback

from last week and look forward to upcoming Blu

-ray and DVD releases. Also, I should mention

that we do have a little bit of a special game

We'll be playing if you listen previously, you

know, we talked about the box office a lot So

with all that box office knowledge, we decided

to try a little bit of a game We'll we'll be

trying to protect what we feel end up being the

top 10 films of 2014 in regarding a box office

So we'll see how we are and as we go through

the box efforts each week It'll add another little

element to it. So it should be fun. Yeah But

to start things off, I guess we'll start things

off like we always do. Kevin, have you been watching

anything recently? It was actually a slow week

for me as far as being able to get to watch very

many films. I believe the only film I saw this

week was Scott Pilgrim. I had never seen that

one in its entirety. And so my roommates and

I watched that one. And that was definitely a

good, interesting film there, fun, kind of turn

your brain off and just enjoy a film, I guess.

So so I enjoyed that one Kind of missed out on

it. I guess when it was out, I don't know why

but I did so I saw that and I saw RoboCop But

I don't believe I saw anything else unless it's

just completely left me already So I guess are

you a fan of like Edgar Wright's other movies

like hot fuzz and the world's end and of course

on with the dad at all like Do you feel like

how it backs up to those? Haven't seen any of

those in like there. I haven't seen any of them

from beginning to end that's on my list of things

to watch Okay. Yeah, it took me I think I watched

onto the dead like four or five times until I

finally sat down to watch it like straight through

So I can understand that I'm kind of right there

with you. I haven't watched a great deal I got

to watch a few extra things because I end up

being snowed in for a day But and one of them

is one that I know you've seen and that's runner

runner Okay, finally got a chance to see that

it was a little bit of a red box visit and Yeah,

I know there's a lot of hatred to that movie

and I do agree I wasn't a big fan of it I didn't

have a high expectations going in of course and

for those that don't know it starts turning it

starts Justin Timberlake as He's a college student

basically trying to Make ends meet. He's a failed

stockbroker or something of that in order to

can pay his tuition. He gets into Online poker

and eventually he loses all and he has to kind

of try to get it back So he goes into the Cayman

Islands I believe to track down the person who

runs the gambling site in which is played by

Ben Affleck and He of course gets brought into

this world and takes it over and it's like this

rags riches But there's a cough type of story,

you know Ben Affleck playing kind of like a gangster

not necessarily but uh It had moments for sure.

I think Justin Timberlake was Was pretty good.

I mean, he's definitely You can see like a leading

man in him. I think he has charisma. He has charm

I do think though is one of those movies that

wasn't nearly as smart as it thought it was at

times It would use a lot of like, you know lingo

and stuff like that regarding gambling and poker

but it felt like it was trying to be smart just

by talking fast a lot of the time but it's also

a movie kind of it's a story you've seen before,

you know and I also didn't really think Ben Affleck

was all that fantastic as the antagonist. He

doesn't have a menace. He's supposed to be this

guy that you hate or this guy that you fear.

And I didn't really get that from him. He just

felt really miscast in that. There were some

fun moments, though, like I mentioned, some of

the poker stuff. The relationships and whatnot

worked for the most part, but it's it's a fine

rental. I Wasn't the biggest fan of it, but I

think it's I think it had like a 12 % on rotten

tomatoes I don't know if it's that bad, but I

couldn't necessarily recommend it either. So

yeah, I echo all that as time has passed, you

know, it was You know, I enjoyed seeing Justin

Timberlake and I was interested just to see how

him and Ben Affleck would play off of each other,

but it definitely didn't live up to the potential

it could have had. There's a lot of movies last

year about the pitfalls of being beyond filthy

rich. Didn't really recognize that as I was going

through the year, but looking back, there was

a lot of those stories where people just were

making a lot of money. Suffering, you know due

to their choices or this that and the other.

Yeah. Yeah, very true. You had died like Gatsby

and Wolf of Wall Street You also had oh Spring

Breakers kind of mentions that a little bit and

other so yeah that is that was a big theme last

year was the kind of like the take on that American

dream of Getting as much as you can as quickly

as you can and the repercussions that follow

The other movie I saw well Sorry, oh and with

another 23 or I'll go with another 2013 film,

which is very very different which was enough

said Sorry, Julia Dreyfus and James Gandolfini.

It's a small small independent film kind of like

a romantic comedy in a way and I didn't actually

enjoy this quite a bit. It's very charming The

chemistry between elites are very is very strong.

It felt very realistic at times like they're

There's a really great dinner scene between them.

Like it's a first date and it feels like a first

date, the conversations and the awkwardness.

It really hits that. And I can't help but while

watching this just feel sad because it's James

Gandolfini and it's him playing against hype

for the most part. He's not playing a gangster.

He's not playing, you know, some mob guy. He's

like just kind of the big teddy bear in a way.

Kind of like a slob, but you kind of just love

him and he's such a good guy in it. And he hits

that role really well. He's really quiet in that

role. And it just sad because I felt like this

would be a movie that could probably open up

more doors for him and kind of get him away from

being typecast. But unfortunately, with him passing

away, that won't happen. Right. But my only really

big issue with this, and I don't want to go into

depth because there's a spoiler attached to it,

there's this really big coincidence that happens

that kind of ties the movie together. It's kind

of this big reveal near the end. Well, you know

what's going on. but like halfway through. And

it just felt unnecessary for this movie. It just

felt like a really unnecessary gag that really

didn't come to much. Like I said, I don't really

want to give it away, but basically it involves

a relationship between two characters and how

close they really are without you knowing. But

I don't know. I would definitely recommend it.

I know it was nominated for a few Golden Globes,

and I do agree. There aren't a lot of amazing

romantic comedies, but I would say this is pretty

good one and it's a good like middle age one

of course because it it comments a lot on marriages

and comments a lot about second marriages and

that and how to keep Those together and the openness

with those relationships, but it's really good.

I would highly recommend it And i'll finish off

with a kind of classic I mentioned like a few

episodes ago that i'm trying to kind of knock

some movies off of my list of shame and I did

last week with M and also Easy Rider. This one's

not necessarily, you know, the cinematic feet

of M but it's known to be really great. mostly

because of the director and the person who wrote

it and that the writer being Quentin Tarantino

and the director Tony Scott and The movie's true

true romance. Have you seen true romance at all?

No, that's also on my list of things that I need

to watch when I was making my decade list I remember

doing the 90s and 1993 and writing that one down

as one of the ones I needed to see still Yeah,

and actually I picked it up on Blu -ray at Target

for like five dollars So I'm like, okay now I

have no excuse not to see it finally sat down

and watch it and I Completely understand where

the love of that movie is coming from. I don't

know if I Loved it as much as I hear some people

like saying it's like Tony Scott's best movie

And stuff like that and I could kind of see that

it doesn't really feel like a Tony Scott movie

It feels more like a Quentin Tarantino movie

you know Christian Slater stars in it and Basically,

he kind of falls in such his relationship with

this prostitute and You kind of go on this like

really weird adventure. The cast is like insane.

You have everyone from Christian Slater to Do

you like I'm James Gannon Alfini has a small

role in it to go back to James golf and Alfini

you have oh Dennis Hopper you have This name

just slipped my mind. I had it written down,

but I forget Christopher Walken actually that's

what I'm thinking of and Christopher Walken gives

this awesome He's only in it for a brief time,

but he has this awesome interrogation with Dennis

Hopper and it's probably the best scene in the

movie It's a it's a great scene. It's root makes

you realize Oh, yeah Christopher Walken used

to be a an actor and not just a joke that people

made in Didn't impersonations of but yeah, so

again, I know a lot of people have already seen

it. It's really well regarded, but I was just

happy to cross that off my list. So I enjoyed

it a great deal. So I think that's pretty much

it for us from what we've been watching recently.

It might be a little bit of a quicker episode,

but I think that's OK. So when we come back,

we'll be discussing the news and getting into

the future box office. So we'll see you in a

bit. Hey, I'm Gary. I'm Mike. I'm Chuck. And

I still can't say something about Transformers,

can I? Good grief. What about sports? Yeah, that's

alright. Alright and welcome back We're gonna

begin the news like we always do with a look

at this past weekends box office And I think

we called it last week. It was kind of an obvious

call, but we went with it anyways and Number

one again is of course the leg of movie the biggest

the first blockbuster of 2014 ranking in another

48 million dollars So with a total gross of 129

million and a budget of only 60 million making

it, you know, making it double its budget already

in only two weeks. So we know it's getting a

sequel. Something new? Go ahead. Well, and the

thing with that is it's kind of interesting since

it already doubled its budget in a two week time

period is we know based on our time so far with

MWR Weekly, you know, towards the end of last

year that the shelf life of animated films can

be very long depending on, you know, how many

come out. In the future to bump it. So I mean

it could have a very long shelf life, which if

it's already double its budget it could it could

Have potential to to rake in some money before

it gets to split into placed too far down the

list. Yeah Yeah, we like you said we saw that

with like frozen and then Despicable me and even

a couple of other ones from last year that just

lasted a long time But another thing just real

quick before you move on on Lego movie. It's

interesting. You don't always have a number one

as far as the best box office of the weekend

that also had a drop in 30 % from last week.

Usually you see an increase or a flat line of

a brand new movie, not always where you see one

that has a decline like that that's still in

first place. Yeah, very true, very true. We had

a few new films come out last week and the number

one, the highest ranking film debut of course

is about last night. with it being Valentine's

Day. Not too surprising, coming in with $27 million.

Not far behind our main attraction for this week,

Robocop. Not necessarily the biggest state movie

of the year, though that is what I saw at the

theater with my wife on Valentine's Day. So who

knows? That came in with $21 million. And number

two from last week, Monuments Men, drops all

the way down to number four with $15 million

and finishing off the top five. The other another

big release for 20 for last weekend, which was

endless love coming in with 13 million Looking

at just the new ones from this week. We talked

about how it would rank out So we had about last

night then RoboCop then endless love and then

winter's tale So it was interesting to see how

those shook up I wasn't quite sure exactly how

they were gonna line up but not super surprising

I guess you know again about last night making

a good amount of money and I wonder if it's Kevin

Hart factor that guy can just rank in box office.

I mean right now he has two movies in the top

ten Kind of crazy. Yeah for sure I would say

that that the people behind RoboCop have to be

somewhat disappointed with that opening though

Only because of its budget size and if it only

got a fifth of its budget back in the opening

weekend They might be a little nervous Yeah,

yeah, it's with a budget of a hundred million

dollars if it could crack it's gonna be an uphill

battle for that to For that to crack a hundred

million, but I guess on the bright side There's

not a huge amount coming out for this rest of

the this month So maybe it will have a little

bit of a saying panel The other bright side for

it is number one There's not you know a bunch

of huge movies that are going to displace it

But also there's not a bunch of movies in its

genre that it's competing against very true I

mean Jack Ryan in shadow recruits not really

a competition for that and You know, there's

really nothing else even in the top 20 that is

that type of film So maybe it can have you know

Even if it can just have the same and kind of

flatline a little bit and have you know 15 to

20 million for a few weeks It would be a positive

for that film. Very true. Very true. Anything

else in the box office and kind of stand out

to you? You know, not necessarily. Obviously

we still have a lot of the Oscar films that are

up there still kind of trickling in some dollars.

Big drop for Labor Day went from 10th last week

down to 17th. So that was kind of a surprise

that it dropped as much as it did and now Vampire

Academy and a few things like that are ahead

of it. But other than that, no, nothing that's

too surprising. And if you look at our yearly

box office so far, which we started doing last

week, as we predicted, LEGO Movie has taken the

top spot now for 2014. And the top five is made

up of LEGO Movie, Ride Along, The Nut Job, Jack

Ryan's Shadow Recruit, and then Monuments Men,

all in the $40 to $129 million range. Interesting,

interesting. One thing I did want to make note

is officially, though, with the Wolf of Wall

Street, didn't make a lot of money last weekend,

but one thing it did do, and it became the highest

grossing movie for Martin Scorsese ever. Which

is kind of crazy. With making it right now, it

has 110 million dollars. So, never would have

thought that, but I guess part of that is inflation

and stuff like that. Because you think about

it, his last big hit was probably, well, I mean,

he's had a lot of... But like things like The

Aviator and Kings of New York didn't really have

the box office of Wolf of Wall Street. So interesting.

I guess if you count on inflation, I'm sure things

like Goodfellas would make a lot more. But the

fact that theater prices are a little higher,

I think it accounts for that a little bit. But

a little bit interesting. I think it's one of

those... I can see that being one of those trivia

questions you get in the future where people

aren't really sure. Yeah, for sure. And Frozen...

As we mentioned has been you know, moving up

the ranks a little bit. It was I think it last

time we checked in all time It was like somewhere

in the 27th range. It's now into the 23rd all

-time domestic Gross for box office at 376 million.

It's a a million behind the Lord of the Rings

returning the king Wow, and it's probably gonna

be that's crazy. I never and then after that

it's it's about 4 million behind Star Wars Revenge

of the Sith and Finding Nemo so Definitely an

impressive showing from Disney. Yeah that yeah,

you think that'll make 400 million you think

you could crash that I don't know. They kind

of did that rerelease of like the sing -along

version in the theater I don't know exactly what

that's like or what that consists of but uh,

I don't know It's gonna be an uphill battle for

it to try to get up to that point It would take

some type of rerelease at some point down the

road I would think and it does also we never

really talked about it and but and it's already

been this but it It is the number two Disney

animated film of all time, if I'm looking at

everything right with the only one ahead of it

being Lion King. Makes sense, makes sense. So

very interesting there. And speaking of the yearly

thing, maybe you can talk a little bit more about

what we're doing with that. Yeah, so basically

what we decided to do kind of A little bit spiced

to this countdown each week was, we're gonna

try to guess what we feel will be the top 10

movies of box office by the end of the year.

Before you get too far into it, what we're actually

gonna do, and maybe we can give a brief, how

much, you know, because we basically started

doing MR Weekly and started looking at the box

office numbers on a weekly basis when the show

started, but how much... Prior to that, did you

pay attention to the box office numbers? Is it

something that's piqued your interest for a long

time? Is it something you're fairly new as far

as getting involved and tracking it and seeing

what types of films do well and different trends

and stuff like that? How long have you been kind

of aware of the box office or paying close attention?

Is this something that we're just kind of starting

together? Well, I never paid as much attention

as we do now. I think I would, the most I would,

I would just see what won for the weekend. Like

in, I never, you know, seeing how much, uh, like

what was number one, that was the kind, I always

found that a little bit interesting. And then,

uh, checking out what made it by the end of the

year, but I never really, I think, considered,

um, I never really considered money wise, like

how much something is making or is longevity.

It's more of like a week by week thing. So bye.

I always was curious about that, but nothing

to this extent, but how about yourself? I'm kind

of in the same aspect. I've always I've I always

seem to look at like the all -time list to see

which films are making it up there and And what

you know over time which decades which films

are doing good for that decade or whatever? And

like I said, I've looked at see which one what

film is top it like on a weekly basis But I've

never looked into it like we have been with this

On a weekly basis and it's really starting to

show me some things different trends different

genres that do well or don't do well different

the amount of shelf life that certain movies

have compared to others. So obviously we're not

super like well versed in all things box office.

So this is going to be kind of an initial attempt

to try to predict the box office. So might be

completely terrible at it, but it's going to

be fun to see how we do along the way. And as

we track it and as our films come out that we

that we're about to list, we'll be either disappointed

or or I guess looking forward to seeing how much

they can bring in. Yeah, yeah, very true. I it

could be it could be pretty bad, but I think

I think in some ways There are ones you could

assume would be up there from just past history

But I think when it gets really hard especially

near the top with the top Like I think five to

ten is so much harder to predict than like one

to five And just for people's sake that are listening

to us. This isn't just something at least for

my standpoint. This isn't just I didn't just

take a list of movies that are going to be released

over the course of the year and just kind of

take stabs of the dark and just rank them. I

actually did some research for this. I looked

at the genre of the film it was. I looked at

previous incarnations in a certain franchise,

if it belonged to a franchise, or I tried to

match it up with films that were most like it.

So this isn't just completely just whipping a

list together in a couple seconds, at least not

on my part. I assume you did some similar looks

at certain films. Yeah, I looked at last year.

I looked at trends last year. I looked at the

directors that are coming out with movies this

year and how their performance previously, like

you said, with franchises. I also considered

the time of year, what was around that time,

if it was coming out kind of in a dry period,

if I think that could help it out. And also,

if it was a name property, like how popular that

property really is, and if there was something

I could kind of relate it to, that I think, okay,

well, something ever along those lines did very

well. So I think possibly this could be this

next, you know, how everyone's looking for the

next twilight. So I was trying to look for something

that could follow some of those surprises that

have Fan bases that maybe I'm not completely

aware of but based upon my research have to were

a lot larger than I than I realized so And so

what exactly are we going to be doing there for

the listeners? So we'll start kind of like our

norm I say we start with like a normal countdown

like we wouldn't with our top 10 movies of the

year Well, I'll be giving my number 10 kind of

explaining what I think it is, and then Kev,

I'll transition to you so you can give your number

10 as well. And I'm sure we'll have some crossover.

I would think it would be impossible not to,

but it'd be kind of interesting to see the different

places we rank things if that works out for you.

Yeah, for sure. And then like he said, we're

going to be tracking it throughout the year and

see as films come out and we'll take a look at.

Obviously right now it's card because there's

only been a few films in 2014 But as we will

take a look at the yearly box office each week

And we'll start to see how things are stacking

up as more and more films come out. Yeah, very

true very true so I guess okay, I Will kick things

off here with number 10 and when I talked about

Kind of the next twilight and this isn't necessarily

one I think it might be the next twilight, but

possibly the next Hunger Games it's starring

a Young up -and -coming actress that has received

some credit a critical crank claim It's a franchise

that has pretty rabbit fan base and that is a

divergent a film that I'm not particularly excited

for but I feel it Fits in that framework I could

be completely wrong because we've seen films

that try to capture the magic of Twilight or

whatever you want to call it and it failed but

I think divergent has a potential a is coming

out in a little bit of a time of year with that's

Not with not a huge amount of competition. I

think I'm not There's not a lot around it that

would it be competing again. So I have strong

faith. It'll be number 10 But I could be completely

wrong. So who knows? When I was doing this to

another thing I kind of tried to do is I tried

to put an actual gross Amount next to each film

kind of like a ballpark that I thought each film

would make Because I actually went through a

lot of films and and kind of got my prediction

for what they would actually do and then I kind

of sorted them to Give me my top ten or twenty

or so but looking back if you go back from 2010

to last year and You look at the top tens and

the money that each one brought in what I kind

of seemed to find is In order to be in the top

ten. It seems like you have to be a film. That's

going to breach the 200 million mark Going back

from 2010 like I said you had ten films in 2010

that breached 200 and then one of the other years

you had 11 and then 13 and then 7 as far as films

surpassing that 200 million mark. So I kind of

use that as a benchmark. It had to be a film

that I thought was going to do at least $200

million in order to make the top 10 of the year,

especially with a year like this year, which

seems to have a lot of potential moneymakers.

Obviously, a lot of years seem like they have

a bunch of potential moneymakers, and you have

the flops, and you have the ones that disappoint,

et cetera. But it seems like a year that could

have a lot of, I would say it might have more

than 10 $200 million. movies. And Divergent was

one of the ones I considered but I actually went

with my number 10 and some people might think

I have this way too low and hopefully I do but

my number 10 is going to be Captain America The

Winter Soldier. I think it is now the first chapter

in that franchise made 176 and I think it will

make more than that. But there hasn't been a

lot of Outside of the actual Avengers and the

Iron Man films there hasn't been a lot of them

the Marvel films that have that have surpassed

that 200 mark besides the last Thor the now Thor

went from 181 to 205 and I'm putting at this

one about the same going from 176 to around that

205 million marks So that's why I thought maybe

Captain America might take that tenth spot yeah,

I could I could see that I I'll hold off on saying

much more because that might be coming up shortly,

but yeah, I can understand where you're coming

from regarding that. And I got to use a similar

logic when I got my number nine. And we've talked

about family films a lot, and animation films,

and how much of a long stay they have. I think

one trend, too, when it comes to animation films

is how much the sequels tend to even explode

compared to the original. You look at Spickle

Me 2, which made so much more than it's first

film so that was kind of my thought process with

this might be some people might think this is

another one that may not belong in the top 10

but i think if you think about it i think it

has a shot and that's rio too uh the first rio

made nearly 150 million dollars you talked about

200 million dollars being a good barometer considering

the trend when it comes to sequels for animation

films i think you can you can go into that what

you see a lot is It becomes a huge hit on Blu

-ray and DVD, kids who didn't see it in the theater

now are fans of that franchise who want to go

see it again. I don't think it'll be anything

near the spectacle of me or anything like that,

but it comes out part time of the year where

there's again not a huge amount of animated films

that we know how long those things can stay in

the theater. So again, that was my mindset with

my number nine. So for me, number nine is Rio

2. I definitely considered Rio 2. If we were

expanding this to a top 20 list, I had it in

there. So I can definitely see it coming in there.

And it is hard to see. Some sequels to animated

films, it's almost different with animated films.

Like sequels to live action films seem to drop

a little bit, unless that first one is so good

that it really pumps people up. A lot of times,

sequels drop. Whereas animated films, they either

stay the same or it seems like they increase.

So I can definitely see that. And I was looking

at animated films for my number nine spot too.

And I feel like I'm somewhat cheating here since

it has already been released and we know it's

done since, you know, decent so far. But I think

the Lego movie has the potential, especially

coming out this early in the year, to have enough

time to be in the theater, whether it be through

re -releases later on, or just as long as it's

gonna stay here, because I don't see it being

displaced right away. in as far as animated films.

So I can see that lasting. I have it about in

the two hundred and ten million dollar mark.

I try to compare it to to kind of unique animated

films that we've seen recently. And if you look

at animated films, you have like the the ridiculous

like Frozen and Despicable Me 2 and Finding Nemo

who are up skyrocketing past that three hundred

and seventy range. And then you have like a tier

below that where like Monsters Inc, The Incredibles,

and Shrek were all in like the 260, 280 range.

I don't see it anywhere near that. Braves. Brave

Cars, Toy Story 2 were all about the 230 to 250

range and then after that you get into like Tangled,

Happy Feet, Ice Age, Madagascar, and Wreck -It

Ralph, which were all in like the 180 to 200

range. And I kind of think maybe Lego Movie would

be akin to something like a Wreck -It Ralph,

which was at 189. So I think it's gonna do maybe

a little bit better than that coming out so early

in the year. So I had the Lego Movie at number

nine. Well, interesting because I I have the

Lego movie at number eight So again, I did I

kind of wanted to put a little higher I debated

I was looking at Oz a great powerful which came

out around similar time last year and that ended

up making in the top 10 for 2013 and Unexpectedly

again something that I think stayed in theaters

and had a huge Huge self -life, so I thought

similar with Lego, but I went up with number

eight with Lego I could easily see this making

it even higher considering the fact that there's

it's Dominating right now. It's getting great

reviews. So it it's probably gonna stay that

way for quite a while But uh, so pretty much

just echo exactly what you said with my number

eight with Lego Alright going to my number eight.

I am switching things up a little bit here not

necessarily Don't know I didn't expect this to

necessarily be in my top ten, but as I was looking

at things I'm kind of trying to be somewhat,

you know Scientific I guess with this I came

down to the film Godzilla that's going to be

coming out Now the trick here is we're just looking

at what we're predicting for domestic gross if

we were making a list, you know based on the

entire International and everything that it would

be different because obviously that's gonna appeal

more Than some movies, you know overseas, etc

But what I looked at for that one trying to compare

it a little bit Obviously, there was a Godzilla

film that came out way back in 1998. I don't

think it's a fair comparison exactly to do that,

but maybe gives you a little bit of a of an Inkliness

to the fan base and the 1998 Godzilla film did

about 136 Then I also looked at the King Kong

film from 2005 which did about 218 And I think

that's more so along the lines of what we're

looking for, you know with the visual Advancements

that we've made technology wise etc. So I think

it's gonna be a huge improvement on the 1998

Godzilla Think maybe around the 220 million mark

might be a spot for that. I could be selling

it short Maybe it's gonna be doing even better

than that If it gets you know, if it has good

reviews right away and good buzz. I can see a

lot of people seeing this This is what film know

that if it gets, you know tanked right at the

beginning people might steer away I don't know,

but I have a Godzilla coming in at number eight

interesting interesting Again, I'll hold off

because I think I'll be talking about that one

shortly my number So I went number seven kind

of goes back to when you talked about it already

and that is Captain America. I too thought about

making it higher, but I'm apprehensive because

I feel like Captain America and Thor, they did

well, but they didn't do amazing. They didn't

do Iron Man numbers. So I don't see Captain America

doing the same. It's also coming out in April.

So it's a little bit early for the summer movie

push that you're used to. Think it's gonna do

well. I think it's gonna do much better than

the original dead, but I don't see it Making

it pass anywhere past number seven. I just think

it I think it's gonna I still think that character

is a hard sell for people for certain people

so And I think it's gonna have that Marvel push

like it always does I think Marvel was required

to have a movie in the top ten But I don't see

them cracking the top five for this past for

2014. So um but so that's my number seven so

what is your number seven um you know when i

was looking at this list i I was forced to look

and say, there's got to be some animated films

in here somewhere. There always is. 2010 had

four animated films in the top 10. If you look

at 2012, it had two, which seemed like a lower

number. Last year, you had Frozen, Despicable

Me 2, Monsters University. So it had three in

there. I figure there had to be some animated

films. We already talked about the Lego movie

as well as you talked about Rio too. I think

another animated film that has a good chance

of obviously ending up in the top 10 would be

the sequel to How to Train Your Dragon, How to

Train Your Dragon 2. The first one did 217 million.

I don't know if it will be a huge jump up from

the first one. The first one is pretty well received.

It has the animated series. So I might be selling

this one short too. It might be higher. But I

kind of ran into somewhere around the 220 to

230 range. I think it probably, as far as what

I'm thinking will be the highest ranked animated

film at the box office. I think there's one that

is a sleeper that could get a lot of buzz later

on I did not rank it in my top ten But I have

how to train your dragon to at the seventh spot

as the highest as far as myself goes the highest

rated animated film It's just an interesting

tread There's an interesting trend right now

and that's the fact that I feel like my top my

bottom five in your My bottom five should seem

to come right after yours and that's that my

number six is also Godzilla I would not also

but my number six is Godzilla and I Thought I

would I could see this getting even higher. I

do think Godzilla is a little bit Not the name

for people in America as much it is overseas.

Like you mentioned I think when people hear Godzilla

they think of that bad role in a movie from the

1990s with Matt Matthew Broderick But that trailer

is just amazing. I think it's gonna sell a lot

of people. I Did kind of look at like Pacific

Rim though, which did not do very well last year

But I don't know if it's a true comparison. I

mean you have something like Cloverfield which

wasn't Nowhere near the top ten when it came

out But I think it did have pretty good traction

and doesn't have the budget of Godzilla doesn't

have the cast of Godzilla Also the fact it was

shaky cam so that could have stopped people from

coming So I think it's I think it has potential

being one of the biggest hits of the summer So

I I put it as my number six All right, fair enough

a lot of similarities obviously in our list.

My number six is a guess maybe If I had to say

my riskiest choice of the countdown, it's probably

my number six. Just because science fiction as

a genre is so unpredictable as to how it's going

to play out in the box office. Think science

fiction more than anything else can just completely

flap or or can just get that buzz going that

just completely goes crazy I mean we saw obviously

with something. I know it's an extreme example,

but if you look at something like Avatar You

know certain science fiction films if they get

a buzz behind them can go crazy and Certain science

fiction films can just completely tank and be

utter failures, so It's really hard to save it.

I think when you combine that with no one's name,

then maybe it's not too much of a stretch to

think that Interstellar has a good shot of breaking

into the top 10. I looked at Inception, which

had 292 million. I looked at even something on

the lower level, like I Am Legend still did 256.

So I think Interstellar has a great chance of

being somewhere between 250, you know, upwards

of, you know, Possibly even coming close to 300.

I have it more so in like the 260 265 range But

again, hopefully I think the buzz behind it with

the director and some of the stars and the trailer

so far look good So I think there is going to

be a buzz behind that so I have interstellar

being kind of my risky pick Maybe not risky but

coming in at number six. I'll just say maybe

I'm a little bit riskier with that pick I don't

know possibly coming up in the future, but My

number five, I thought about putting this maybe

lower. I thought about putting it higher. When

its original came out, not its original, but

when in 2009, or sorry, 2012, The Amazing Spider

-Man ranked number seven with 262 million that

year. So I was wondering what to do higher, but

I figured that also was a summer with The Avengers

and, you know, The Dark Knight Rises. So it kind

of stole a little bit of its thunder. So. For

my number five, I'm going Amazing Spider -Man

2. Again, the sequel of Spider -Man 2 did better

than Spider -Man, so maybe it will continue that

twin. My worry, though, is that I feel there's

a lot of negative buzz about it. No one's really

seen it yet, but I think a lot of people weren't

fans of the trailer, myself included. But it

is spider -man and spider -man brings in the

kids If you can go to any like target toy section,

you're gonna see tons of spider -man stuff like

they know how to market that character It's got

a lot of different character, you know It's got

a lot of different villains in it so that could

attract people Jamie Foxx might bring in a new

audience I didn't go to the other one. So for

my number five, I had amazing spider -man 2 It's

it's never it's never a bad thing to put some

superhero films in the top ten now very true

You always have a good shot at that Perhaps I'm

putting this one too low and I might get people

saying that This is crazy to have it this low

just because as a franchise. It's known as bringing

in tremendous money But I'm looking at the last

two of this franchise which did three hundred

and three million and then dropped the second

one all the way down to 256. I don't know if

that will be a trend. I think the third one rebounds

a little bit from that, but there was so much

hype behind Smog and some stuff about that last

Hobbit film that, you know, the second one only

doing 256 scares me a little bit. So I'm not

going to rank this one as high as you would think

people would rank the Hobbit there and back again.

I'm going to drop it all the way down to the

fifth spot. I think there are four films that

will make more money than that. Call me crazy.

And hopefully I am wrong, and it does even better,

but I have it around the $265 - $270 million

range. I'm doing a little bit better than the

last one, but not by that much, so The Hobbit

there and back again is my number five. And I'll

just say, spoiler alert, but actually I did not

include The Hobbit in my top ten. I felt worried

not including it, but I just think a lot of people

after the second one kind of gave up on the franchise,

didn't like it, and I didn't have that issue,

but I thought I'd... Do a bold choice not include

it, but that could end up be biting me in the

butt. So who knows I can hope my number four

It'll get back to one that you talked about and

I will say I agree with you that how to train

your dragon 2 will be the top Animated film of

2014. I just think it might make it a little

bit higher Just I think that is gaining popularity

with the TV show. I think that's gonna bring

in new fans The the first one did tremendous.

It didn't come out in the summer though. I think

that It came out around the time Lego movie came

out. So I think that Helped it out a great deal

and ended up making more money that way. But

again it's that it's that rule when it comes

to Animated sequels. I just tend to do better

not always but I think it won't be the case with

how to train your dragon 2 So it also has 3d

and I think how to train your dragon was a movie

people purposely saw in 3d And I think that'll

continue again with this film. So Unlike something

like Rio that doesn't really have a 3d component.

That's nearly as important So I think that's

gonna be like a huge Reason it does better and

makes it up as high. So my number four is how

to train your dragon to What is your number four?

I'm gonna go with a sequel as well for number

four and just like you I'm gonna talk about one

that's already been talked about I do think the

amazing spider -man 2 will will find itself somewhere

in our top 10 Where that is is hard to say now

if you look at the original Trilogy you had 403

373 and 336 those are all super impressive numbers

Anything over 300 million is top 50 all time

at this point in our movie history So, you know,

they have the original spider -man all three

in the franchise are basically top 50 films all

time Then we had the amazing spider -man like

you said was all the way down at 262, you know

anywhere from you know 70 to over 150 million

drop from that franchise, but like you said It

was going to get some pretty stiff competition

that really shut it out a little bit. Not saying

that there's not stiff competition here, but

we don't have the Avengers, we don't have the

Dark Knight going directly against it. And like

you said, Spider -Man is one of the most beloved

superhero characters of all time. So I see it.

possibly rebounding a little bit from the 262.

And if it's going to do better than the first

one did against that stiff competition, and the

first one did 262, that puts it somewhere between

260 and 300. And if it does that, I think it

has what it takes to crack our top five. So I'm

going to put it at our number four spot, the

Amazing Spider -Man 2. Great, great. And for

my number three, I'm talking about one that you've

talked about already. And again, this is when

I looked at the director and I'm like, OK, this

guy's box office gold. I can't put him any lower

than number three. I just can't do it. And that

is, of course, Christopher Nolan with his movie

Interstellar. I also looked at something like

Gravity. Not exact comparison. We don't know

what Interstellar is really going to be like.

But we saw there was a thirst there for science

fiction or space. with gravity, so that could

help it even more. Like you, I looked at Inception

that came out, made 292 million. Again, that's

a summer film, but it didn't necessarily feel

like a summer film. You also have Matthew McConaughey,

who could potentially be an Oscar winner by the

time that movie comes out. Right. So has a lot

going for it. Again, Nolan's a person I trust.

I think his name carries more weight to it than

I think any director going right now. You know

it because When you see the trailer, it doesn't

say from the director of Dark Knight. It says

from Christopher Nolan. He's kind of even gone

beyond. He's become like the name name brand

director like Steven Spielberg of our generation.

So I think that is a big reason this movie is

going to do as well as it did. Like I think you

could probably put another director on this movie.

Maybe it's just as good, but I don't think it'll

make nearly as much money. So that's why I went

for it for number three. Alright, a bold move

and possibly one that will pay off towards the

end of the year. I feel silly, like maybe this

is the riskiest pick I have because it's not

on your list at all, I'm guessing. I have a good

idea of what your next two are. And I don't think

this one's in there, but I just can't ignore

the money that the previous films in this franchise

have made. I did not have this in my list of

films I was looking forward to most in 2014.

Some people thought that was odd. But the first

film made 319, the second film made 402, the

third film made 352. Even if it drops 50 million

from the last one all the way down to 300, I

still think that's enough for it to break our

top five and possibly top three. Regardless of

the turmoil behind it or the people that hate

certain people involved with it I can't ignore

the money that transformers makes so I'm gonna

put transformers age of extinction at number

three Like I said, even if it's the lowest making

film out of the four Even if it drops 50 million

from the last incarnation. It's still gonna make

300 million Yeah, yeah, we'll definitely see

I oh unless it's a complete flop, which it could

be it has that potential For my number two, my

number one and my number two, I went back and

forth a lot. I was like, okay, I was strong that

these would be number one and number two, which

one I'm gonna go with first. And I ended up with

number two going with, I talked about, well,

Divergent's gonna be the next Hunger Games, or

potentially, so number two, there's a Hunger

Games movie coming out, so I'll go with that

one. You know, the Hunger Games last year was...

What are the top movies of the year? It's been

gaining in popularity. Now, I hate kind of saying

this in this context, but it's hard not to ignore

the fact that you have Phil Seymour Hoffman in

it and he's passed away that could add something

to it. I mean, it's just a franchise that keeps

going and getting bigger and getting bigger.

It's so I went with number two was Hunger Games.

I just think it's a franchise that's unsolvable

at this point, so. There is absolutely no chance

that it's not going to be in the top 10 somewhere.

So it's going to be here somewhere. It's just

where exactly will it be? And I think what you

said, too, with the unfortunate passing of Philip

Seymour Hoffman and the way that that that last

movie kind of seemed like it was revving up to

something, you know, sometimes you got to look

at when you're in a franchise that has multiple

movies, the the way. Kind of the life cycle of

that franchise and what part you're in to going

into that next film because sometimes you're

kind of on a low or sometimes you're kind of

Staying is you know standing pat and sometimes

there's that you know It seems like you're just

building and building towards that climax And

you got a little of that with that last Hunger

Games move so that could help it project into

the excitement for that next chapter So I can

definitely see what you're saying with that I

however I'm gonna be a little bit different and

with my number two The only reason I don't have

this hire is because of the franchise history

and I'm not saying the franchise has a bad history

at all but It's gonna take the leaps and bounds

for this to to get To the point where I was comfortable

putting at my number one spot My number two is

gonna be X -Men Days of Future Past now we've

had a number of films from this franchise and

None of them have made more than 230 million

We've had 157, 214, 234. If you want to count

the origins film, 179. And then with the last

X -Men film, we had 146. So even though I love

all these films and I love this franchise, they

don't seem to quite be on the same level. If

you look at the history of like a Spider -Man,

Hunger Games, Transformers, even The Hobbit,

none of them are making that much. I say that

much, they're making $200 million. It's a lot

of money. Even with that being said, I think

X -Men Days of Future Past will easily be the

biggest moneymaker of the franchise's history.

It will be leaps and bounds above all the other

ones. I put it around 310 to 320, which is 100

million more than any other film in this franchise

has ever made. But I think it breaks the 300

million mark. And maybe it has a chance of taking

that number one spot. I felt too nervous putting

it there based on the numbers that the other

films in this franchise. Put up so i'm putting

it at number two x -men days of future past Very

nice. Well, I will say this which might be I

guess I didn't expect this to be a surprising

but maybe it is I did not include that in my

top 10 Mainly because of the past history that

you mentioned I looked at x -men first class,

which did now 100 nearly 150 million Wolverine

last summer did not do very well either did well,

but not nearly all that tremendous and Maybe

with the joining of two cast it will change,

but I guess I was a little bit apprehensive with

that past history I think it's gonna do amazingly

well, but being in jam -packed summer with a

lot of competition going on I just felt I don't

know I was a little bit I Didn't know if there's

enough there for it to make That much more than

its predecessors, but I could be wrong. It could

be wrong I would not be against me being wrong

because I am highly looking forward to that well

now I am very much looking forward to seeing

whatever your number one is Well, I actually

have no clue. Well, I guess my number one is

and I want To me this is uh, I guess this is

maybe risky. I didn't think it was risky. I feel

like I missed one No, you didn't like I missed

a film somewhere. It's one that you've already

talked about. It's a Transformers agent extension.

I think it'll be the number one movie of the

year Will be good. Who knows but I just transformers

films are huge and again You have IMAX considering

you want the fact that this franchise is just

Everyone seems not to like the movies, but yet

everyone goes to them and they just get bigger

and bigger and bigger You have Mark Wahlberg

now, and I think that's gonna be huge. I think

He makes a lot. He has a box office draw to him

to certain extent look at lone survivor Look

at how all that's in maybe not just of him But

I mean he's had bad movies here and there that

haven't done well, but he you know He'd look

at something like Ted that brought in a lot of

money. So He does have, you know, a lot of fans.

He also has a reality TV show going on right

now, which I still don't understand. But Michael,

and it's going to have, I think that the dino

factor of the, you know, the dino botch, I think

it's going to be huge. I think that could bring

in a lot of kids, like the Transformers movies

always do. Couldn't I couldn't find any research.

I tried to find out if it was in 3d or not, but

I wasn't able I didn't say it was so I don't

know if that's for sure The last one was so I

would assume this one would be too But so that's

something I also considered 3d IMAX. That's it's

you know increased ticket prices So I see that

happening. So for my number one, I went with

Transformers each of extinction. So I'm curious

to find out what your number one is My number

one like yours was one that you had already talked

about as well. You know, if you look at the past,

just as far as which films have made the most

money, it's no shock to see Transformers up there.

You know, we both listed Amazing Spider -Man,

which as a franchise does amazing. You know,

I had The Hobbit on there, which has made a lot

of money. Um, but I obviously can't ignore and

I haven't listed it yet. So I would have to list

it at number one because otherwise I'd be a fool

not to have it in my top 10. Uh, and that would

be the Hunger Games, Mockingjay part one. Like

I said, I just think the, the, um, the direction

that those movies are going leads more people

in to be excited for this one with the ending

of the last Hunger Games film. I think the way

that it left, you double that with the death

of Philip Seymour Hoffman. You look at the 423

and 408 million that the last two films have

done. I think this has a chance to be, at this

point, the highest of the franchise. And if those

were at 408 and 423, that puts this one possibly,

I think, at the highest one, which could be 430.

I just don't know if any film will have enough

to beat that. You know, when you're looking at

a film in the 430s, now you're talking top 10

of all time. And I don't think we're going to

see two films next year that are both going to

be in our top 10 of all time. We could. It could

be that type of year, because if you look at

Transformers, the highest one of that franchise

ranks 18th. The highest Hunger Games right now

ranks 11th. So they could be going back and forth

against each other. Maybe I'm the fool for throwing

X -Men in there when that franchise has not done

well historically, as far as the... type of level

we're talking about. They obviously have all

been successful. So yeah, I have Hunger Games,

Mockingjay Part 1 at my number one. Very nice.

Interesting to see that a lot of similarities

in our list, just differences in where we put

it. There's only two differences. I have X -Men

and The Hobbit ranked, and you have Rio 2 and

Divergent ranked. So outside of that, the other

eight films that we have are identical, just

different in placement. Very true. I'll just

run down my top 10 one more time real quick.

My number 10 was Divergent, like you mentioned.

Number 9, Rio 2, 8 with LEGO, 7, Captain America,

Winter Soldier, 6, Godzilla, 5, Amazing Spider

-Man, 4, How to Train Your Dragon, 2, 3, Interstellar,

2, The Hunger Games, and number 1, I had Transformers.

And for me, it was number 10, Captain America

Winter Soldier, number nine, The Lego Movie,

number eight, Godzilla, number seven, How to

Train Your Dragon 2, number six, Interstellar,

number five, The Hobbit There and Back Again,

number four, The Amazing Spider -Man 2, number

three, Transformers Age of Extinction, number

two, X -Men Days of Future Past, and number one,

Hunger Games Mockingjay Part One. Looking at

the list overall and some of the films we left

off of it, You know, we both have How to Train

Your Dragon 2 as the highest animated film. The

other ones we have listed are the LEGO movie.

And then you had Rio 2. Is there a chance that

a sleeper like Big Hero 6 could surpass any of

those? Or do you think we have the top three

animated films listed? I don't see any of them.

I mean, I could see Box Trolls possibly doing

well, but it's also with stop motion. So probably

not. I don't see any of those. Dominating something

like How do you train your dragon too? I think

it's gonna be impossible at this point. They

may do well You know what we we might see someone

like be a surprise hit Like I think Despicable

Me 2 was a lot better than people expected, but

I don't see them anything coming close to those

two now And then I talked about possibly needing

to have that 200 million mark in order to make

it top 10. I did have one other film on my list

making 200 million, but not being in the top

10. 300 Rise of an Empire, I think, has an outside

shot of breaking that 200 million mark, the first

300 at 210. But that's a sequel. I don't know

if that does better or if that actually goes

back a step. So have to wait and see any other

big ones that you wanted to mention that didn't

quite make your list that you were considering

heavily I This one I was questioning but I I

didn't know way which way was gonna go and that

was Maleficent I thought you know, you look at

something like Alice in Wonderland that thing

made a billion dollars But some of the other

live -action fairy tale movies Jack the giant

killer The Snow White films that came out like

Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsmen,

they didn't do anywhere near that. So I would

guess it probably would fall in the middle someplace

with something like Angelina Jolie, but I think

that has potential. With that, I looked at Snow

White and the Huntsman, which made 155, and I

looked at Oz from last year at 235. I don't know

why I felt like that was a similar audience possibly.

So that's going from 155 to 235. If it does as

well as Oz the Great and Powerful, then you have

a case for that being in the top 10. If it falls

down to where Snow White and the Huntsman is,

then it's definitely not going to make the top

10. So that's kind of a tricky one. Yeah. That's

why I was a little bit, I'm going to go with

put that off because I think it's a little bit

too much of a risk. This was a huge wild card.

It may not come anywhere close, but I know there's

a huge love for this book, and I know a lot of

you have been talking about it. I know a lot

of people, it's also coming from a director that

a lot of people love, and that's Gone Girl. I

think sometimes you have those hits that come

out of nowhere, like Gravity last year. Again,

nothing at all close to one another, but it has

a fandom built into it. Sometimes you see those

novels that become adaptations of movies, and

then they're Take off so That to me was one of

those just like stab in the dark Maybe this one

has a chance but I'd end up not putting in my

top 10 because I thought it was too much of a

stab in the dark I can see that Some other kind

of big franchise names that I was looking at.

I just didn't think possibly might not stack

up You know, we didn't talk about Guardians of

the Galaxy. I really that's that is a wild card

I absolutely don't know where that one's gonna

fall You know, like we said, if you're looking

at the other Marvel films, Captain America, the

first one was at about 176. Thor ranges from

180 to 200, but the Hulk film was down by 134.

I don't know where Guardians of the Galaxy falls

in that spectrum. Yeah, yeah, that was tough.

I felt it would probably... I don't see it making

any more than Thor or Captain America. I would

think it makes maybe around the amount of Incredible

Hulk, just because it's such an odd film. That

I think it's gonna be hard sell for a lot of

people the fact that you have a raccoon With

a gun and a talking tree. It's gonna be a little

bit difficult. That's like hard science fiction

So like you said previously science fiction is

kind of hard to tell what's gonna do well and

what's not so speaking of science fiction that

kind of scared me a little bit because I had

a couple that I was considering. I did rank interstellar.

I was very heavily considering Divergent like

you had. I even looked at like a Jupiter Ascending

or Transcendence and some of those, but I'm just

too scared to put too many science fiction films

on that list. I was also scared to put Teenage

Mutant Ninja Turtles on the list. I didn't realize,

but the original live action way back in the,

whatever it was, 1990, I actually did 135. Which

I was surprised that it did that much so this

one maybe has a chance to be you know more than

that somewhere in the 150 175 range I just don't

think it's gonna have quite enough to break it.

I also didn't think You know the original Planet

of the Apes well not the original but the the

most recent Planet of the Apes was at 176 It

did have a lot of buzz after that it was very

well received so I can see the second one doing

better than that and If you're doing better than

176 you might have a shot I just had it just

slightly falling out any other ones you wanted

to bring up Also thought about the hercules movie

not the one that came out but the one that's

coming out with the rock just because we know

how much Pull the rock has so I thought about

it, but I didn't think there's anything really

enough for us to go off of it's not necessarily

an original property, but It's too hard. I fall

it kind of compared it to like Melissa Melissa

Finn like I Didn't feel strongly enough to put

it there, but I think it could be a dark horse.

It does really well I couldn't find anything

to compare Noah or access to really I don't think

they compared a passion of the Christ By any

means and I don't know if you can compare it

to something like the gladiator I'd really couldn't

find anything to compare those two So it was

too much of a shot in the dark for me to rank

those two And I also didn't know with like a

movie like Need for Speed You know Fast and the

Furious is a well -built, you know long -lasting

franchise I don't think Need for Speed can come

in and immediately achieve that Um, but I guess

there is that fan base out there for that type

of movie. And another thing, nobody, uh, you

or myself have not ranked any in our top 10 or

even talked about is there's, there's not a single

comedy amongst it. And I know comedies don't

make a ton of money. Um, but if you look at like

every once in a while, there is that comedy that

comes out, like a hangover or wedding crashers

that, that does break the 200 million mark. Do

you think there's any comedies that have even

close to the potential of doing that this next

year? I personally didn't see any I know there's

hunger or not hunger games to a horrible horrible

horrible bosses to I Don't see it happening when

we talk about trailers. There's that movie Tammy

coming out So we know how much mean Melissa McCarthy

makes a lot of money for her film so possibly

but I don't know I'd nothing Comedy wise it seemed

like it again. Another not a strong year at least

box -office wise I looked at Dumb and Dumber

2 or Night of the Museum 3 as possibilities,

but I just couldn't put them in my top 10. All

right. But yeah, so it'll be fun kind of going

down and comparing these at the end of the year.

So I'll be cheering very hard for Divergent when

it comes out. Hopefully it lives up to my expectations.

All right. Anything else before we get into this

week's headlines? No, hopefully you guys enjoyed

that and you can track them along with us. Like

I said, we'll be checking in each week and as

these films release and seeing how, you know,

it'll be a little more exciting to see those

opening week numbers and to see, you know, now

that we know what we're looking for, you know,

as far as some targets possibly being that 200

million mark, et cetera, for ending up in the

top 10. Yeah, very, very true. So I know this

weekend was a little bit late on headlines, but

why don't you get us kicked off by having us

look at what happened this past week. Yeah, last

week we had a lot of news and this week we didn't.

That's just all there is to it. We're gonna start

off with an interesting note there about one

of the films that we briefly mentioned there,

which is Darren Aronofsky's Noah. Apparently

there was different cuts of that one being...

Sent out as far as gauging audience response,

etc. And at one point they were maybe gonna go

without his cut of it Which I guess angered him

a lot, but it seems like the studio Paramount

we're talking about has decided that they are

going to release his cut of Noah which I believe

it said it was two hours and 12 minute cut getting

the nod for the release So I always think it's

good when the director gets their wishes because

they're the ones that are Putting the vision

together and if you slice and dice and stuff

like that, it's just never fair to them Yeah,

I always feel like if you if the cut that comes

out is not the director's vision When you like

critique it it almost comes with an asterisk

because you feel like you're not watching the

movie That was meant to be made. So I agree Also,

talking about some headlines as far as another

film that is on the radar as being made, John

Singleton is tagged to write, produce, and direct

a Tupac biopic. So a long -planned project finally

up and running. What do you think about that

one? It makes sense. You know, he's an iconic

figure tragic ending, of course, so I'm gonna

get um, can they get kevin hart to play tupac?

Because that'll that'll ensure success Maybe

one of his friends. It'll be like good bucks.

He'll play uh, easy or whatever. Uh, who was

in nwa with I just up my street cred with that

one. And it was originally going to be Antoine,

I can never say his last name, who had directed

Olympus, has fallen most recently and now being

John Singleton. How do you feel about his work?

Obviously he did Too Fast Too Furious, Shaft,

Boys in the Hood. How do you think as far as

him being the one tag for this film? Well, I

mean he had a great decade in the 90s with like

boys in the hood like you mentioned Lately nothing

fantastic, but I don't know Based upon like his

stuff in the 90s like he was very much in that

culture You represented it well then so I can

kind of see that I could see why they would go

his route But I just hope it's better than stuff.

He's putting putting out recently All right And

talking about two franchises that I can never

keep straight as far as what's coming out, what's

not coming out. One would be the Peter Pan franchise,

and the other one's Tarzan. I can never... keep

straight what's going on with these franchises.

But apparently Warner has set a 2016 release

date for the film entitled Tarzan 3D. The film

will arrive July 1st, 2016 is what it's saying.

Now let's not get too excited and project what

it will be going against. We don't know. Apparently

Alexander Skarsgard is on board to play Tarzan

with Margot Robbie from Wolf of Wall Street signed

on to play Jane. Samuel L. Jackson and Kristoff

Waltz are also confirmed to co -star. And according

to the article David Yates set to set behind

the camera for the first time since his quote

marathon stint directing the last four Harry

Potter films. Now, again, this set to go head

to head against Independence Day 2. We'll see.

But talk about some names there. Skarsgard, Robbie,

Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz. Maybe I should

be paying more attention to this film. Possibly.

I feel like Samuel L. Jackson is like in every

movie. So really. Yeah, I guess. I don't know.

Tarzan. You talked about Peter Pan and like Tarzan.

It just it's not a name that like, oh, yeah,

you know, the Tarzan movie. I remember watching

some of the classic ones back in the day, but

I was always more of a fan as a kid of George

of the Jungle because he was funny. Not that

that movie was very good, but yeah, it could

be good. It's funny. I feel like 2016 is now

getting filled up with all this stuff. You know,

we already have Batman and Superman there. We

have you like you mentioned The film that's going

out against so independence day independence

day to Tarzan 3d though Tarzan 3d could be really

cool Like if it's done, right and I like David

H in his work on the Harry Potter movies I thought

he did a fantastic job with those Alright well

not a lot of casting news just one piece that

I know will find one person at the network a

very excited Apparently Chris Pratt and Danny

McBride, or maybe he's not won't be excited I

don't know what he feels about these two individuals,

but they are to star in a Knight Rider movie

According to this article that is dream casting

So I don't know what that means exactly So yeah

proposed adaptation of Knight Rider according

to these two Chris Brandon McBride and I'm saying

or it's saying that Pratt is in line to take

on David Hasselhoff's role as Michael Knight

with McBride Being the voice of kit, which is

what they're rumoring that to be. What do you

think? So kit won't be nearly as elegant as he

was back in the day when he was voiced by mr.

Feeney from Boy Meets World, right? I guess it

sounds like it's going to go that route when

we do the remakes of the 80s properties where

it's more comedic if it's going to be voiced

by Danny McBride. He's okay in my book. I'm not

the biggest Danny McBride fan. I think he works

well. I thought he was really funny in This is

the End because he was kind of playing like a

joke of himself. But I do feel like he gets a

little bit tiresome at times. But maybe if he's

only a voice, it won't be too bad. I mean, I

just say I'm not huge on the Knight Rider franchise.

I watched the show a little bit back in the 80s.

I wasn't a humongous fan of it, but I don't know

if I can see either of these people in that role

unless you say like they're gonna take some other

type of weird angle towards it which I don't

think would go over very well, but maybe I'm

wrong because it seems to have done well with

21 Jump Street and a couple other films like

that. So I just don't see Chris Pratt as Michael

Knight and I don't see McBride. I don't see the

logic behind him being the voice of kids. Yeah,

I I like you I was never a big knight writer

for a fan Do I think we need the movie? No, not

really. But uh, I mean, can't you get David Hasselhoff?

It's not like he's doing anything else. But doesn't

have a son or something. I don't know He definitely

isn't doing anything else But, uh, so that's

the only other casting news, so we're just gonna

do a bit of trailer talk. There was actually

quite a few trailers that came out, a few of

them were just updated versions of trailers that

were already released, so we won't talk as much

about them. But if you're interested in any of

these trailers, and then we'll talk about them

a little bit, but Two Faces of January, The Double,

Under the Skin, a new trailer for Transcendence,

Brick Mansion, Tammy, Think Like a Man, Authors

Anonymous, The Love Punch, The Bag Man, another

one for Nymphomaniac, and Drive Hard. as well

as an updated one for Joe. Which ones of those

caught your attention? Actually, the one that

really caught my attention the most was Joe.

It looks like Nicolas Cage is actually going

to do acting again, which is nice. He's not done

that in a while. It's coming from David Gordon

Green, who It was kind of on a downward slope.

It came back last year with Princess Avalanche,

which I thought was really good. Also, it was

Ty Sheridan, who was in Mud, who I thought was

excellent in Mud. So I'm super stoked for that

movie. I'm kind of thinking, like, I probably

should have put that in my most anticipated,

because I think that looks really good. But did

you get a chance to see that one? Yeah, that

was one that I saw the original spot for it.

I talked briefly about it last week. It did seem

interesting. I could see that, you know, I kind

of made it an analogy to Labor Day in a bit as,

you know, when Josh Brolin is basically a convict

that's somewhat playing a role model father figure

to a child. This reminded me of that a little

bit. So I'm definitely interested in that. Which

other ones caught your attention? The double,

which looks really It starts Jesse Eisenberg

and the trailer is really like odd in a good

way like it's hard to really even understand

what's going on with it really and you just hear

like a voiceover and A lot of scenes that are

kind of between like you'd really have no idea

what the plot is or anything like that Very existential

very kind of cryptic with what it's doing That's

also interesting because in that trailer certain

times they would when they were introducing each

actor Some of them they were showing twice Yeah,

the name flashed twice and some of them it didn't

and with the name being the double and I know

it's something to do with at least Jesse Eisenberg's

having like a Double, you know body double of

some sort. I don't know if there's gonna be multiple

characters that have that or if it's just a one

There's a lot of mystery behind that one. Yeah

that to me looks pretty interesting. I I'm kind

of very intrigued by that like it like I have

no idea what it's gonna be like but The trailer

has me interested Two films that will obviously

do well in the box office, since we've been talking

about it. Tammy, like you said, and then probably

Think Like a Man, too, for the actors and actresses

involved. But I thought both of those trailers

looked decent. I mean, Tammy looked like it had

the potential to be funny. And I think Think

Like a Man will do well. Yeah, it actually wasn't

that bad. Didn't I saw thinking like a man the

first one and it surprised me. It was better

than I expected Nothing amazing, but I thought

it was fine and I did laugh a good deal at Tammy.

I'm not gonna lie It's more of a scene than a

trailer, but It's Melissa McCarthy doing her

thing. So And that can be funny if done, right?

So and I think that's actually directed by your

husband, which is kind of interesting interesting

The brick mansion of course starring Paul Walker

So that'll be interesting to see how that does.

I thought authors anonymous looked pretty lame

As well as drive hard, I don't know if I can

take that one serious as well I don't know if

they're trying to sound like die hard So that

I'm like is driving up and die hard combining

And the one that did seem like it could be kind

of quirky interesting but could also be awful

was the the love punch with if I'm getting that

one right, that's the one with Emma Thompson

and James Bond. You have Pierce Brosnan? Yeah.

I don't know. It looked like it could be kind

of quirky and interesting, but it could also

be awful. To go back to the Brick Mansion movie,

that's actually a remake of a movie I really

like a lot, which is District B -13. It's on

Netflix right now. It's actually a French action

film, but it's... I know like every movie now

in action has parkour, but the guy who was actually

in the remake too, he's like this parkour master

or whatever, but some of the stunts in action

in that are just awesome to watch. It's a really,

it's like one of the fastest movies I've ever

seen because it just never stops moving. So I,

I'm like, I had no idea they were making an American

remake of it. I completely missed that. So I

don't know how good it's going to be, but that

has me intrigued just because I love the original

property a lot. I still can't get a good read

on Under the Skin or Transcendence. I'm still

up in the air on those two, but I was interested

to see what your take was. Vito Mortensen, Kirsten

Dunst, Oscar Isaac, all involved with Two Faces

of January. Do you think that had any potential

whatsoever? I do. I guess it's based on the person

who wrote a novel, the same guy who wrote The

Talented Mr. Ripley. I don't know. It looks like

it could be good. It could also just be dry and

stereotypical and just... paint by numbers, but

I like the actors that are in it. So I do think

it has potential. All right. Well, if you want

to see the trailers for any of those films, there'll

be links to them in our episode posts. You can

click on those and take a look, or you can give

us your opinions on some of those trailers that

we talked about, which ones you're looking forward

to the most. Definitely, definitely. And when

we come back, we'll be talking about the latest

remake of Robocop. So we'll see you in a bit.

What if I told you that even the worst neighborhood

in America could be made completely safe? How

do I know this? Because it's happening right

now in every country in the world, but this one.

It is great to see American machines helping

to promote peace abroad. So then tell me, why

can't we use these machines here at home? Why

is America so robo -phobic? We need to give Americans

a product they can love. Figure they can rally

behind. We can't put a machine on the street.

Forget machines. They want a product with a conscience.

Something that knows what it feels like to be

human. I'll give you a body kiss. Bye, baby.

Too slow, boy. We're gonna put a man inside a

machine. Time to wake him up. Make him more tactical.

Let's go with black. Quality control, EM -208

versus Tin Man. Good cop, bad cop. Bad cop, robocop.

He's undoing what we did to him. Thank you for

your cooperation. Alright and welcome back. Like

I mentioned, we're gonna be talking about the

remake of Robocop coming out directed by Jose

Padilla. I think I'm pronouncing that probably

incorrectly, but it's starring Joel Canaham,

Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and a few others.

But I guess before we start talking about the

new Robocop, probably a good idea to just discuss...

the old RoboCop and if we were a fan never really

got into it if we liked the movie all that great

stuff so do you have any fondness or any recollection

of the original RoboCop movie? I mean I remember

seeing it it was kind of along that same time

period when stuff like Terminator and Total Recall

and you know there was that 80s time period when

sci -fi was running rampant And they all have

that just that same feel to them, which is not

bad. But it's just kind of that feel where we

were still in a time period from a technical

standpoint where these films could not. Some

of them, some of them looked very well done.

But, you know, we're kind of in that limbo where

it wasn't like when you see science fiction films

from back, like in the, you know, like the 60s

or the 70s, where they just look ridiculous.

The 90s had that time where they were starting

to look believable, but not to the point where

we're at now. I mean, I guess this is something

you can always say, you know, every 10, 20 years,

it's going to be able to look better and better.

But but they didn't have that. I'm not going

to say cheese factor, but they had that just

something about it where you didn't necessarily

take them super serious. You just watched them

and let yourself have fun with them and escape

and just enjoy them. I have them all on DVD.

I did not. Like I wanted to, I wish I would have

had more time because I really wanted to rewatch

the originals before I saw this. Instead, I'm

going to have to rewatch them afterwards so I

can catch up on how the originals went exactly

because it's been a long time since I've seen

all of them from beginning to end. But I didn't

dislike them. They weren't like my favorite films

of all time. I definitely had films during that

time period that I liked better. But I do remember

seeing the original RoboCop maybe a couple years

ago and still enjoying it and thinking it was

fine, you know, and a fun adventure. So I went

into this one with neither high or low expectations.

I kind of went in neutral, remembering that,

yeah, I liked the old ones, but they weren't

like fantastic, but they weren't awful. So I

kind of was expecting something along those lines.

Interesting. Yeah, when I was. Kid, I remember

liking Robocop, but I don't know if I ever saw

it. I think I just liked the idea of the fact

that it was called Robocop. I think I saw it

on TV or so because I remember watching it like

you a year or two ago. Again, I recently saw

Robocop 2 again, but I have in Robocop and realizing

as a kid, I don't think I watched this version

of it because it's so much more violent than

when I saw it as a kid. And I don't think I got

it. Obviously, when I was a kid, I just liked

it because it was called Robocop. I didn't really

get the fact that Peter von Hoeven was doing

a satirical take on the action of that day. I

think a lot of people didn't. When you look at

his style of attracting, he very much is not...

He's giving you a... a movie that's very layered.

And I think as an adult, I appreciate that movie

so much more. How its violence gets so ridiculous

and over the top that it almost becomes comedic

in a way and how smartly written it is and how

it's a lot of great deal of social commentary

and the satire is really on point. But you can

also just appreciate it as an action film, a

science film. And like you mentioned, some of

the special effects are... You know don't hold

up amazingly well, especially like Ed 209 with

the stop -motion animation that they kind of

used for that It's in I always find it really

funny where you see a scene of that character

like trying to go upstairs and suddenly it's

like on its back and for no apparent reason There's

like a tiger roaring in the background. Like

it's supposed to be making that noise. I just

found that kind of odd So I do have a high respect

for Robocop The sequel of RoboCop 2 is kind of

nothing fantastic. It's kind of take it or leave

it. Hasn't been much, but nothing bad. I haven't

had a chance to rewatch RoboCop 3. I remember

as a kid liking it, but I think I just liked

it because it was RoboCop, I'm sure, because

all I hear is horrible things about it. So I've

always wanted to go back and rewatch it. But

like you, I'll have to do that afterwards. So

I guess then the question is, how do you With

having very limited or kind of open up expectations

with 20 with this remake. How do you feel it?

It did You know, like I said, I didn't go in

with high expectations or low expectations and

the film I will say then met my expectations

It wasn't something I was upset about It wasn't

something I was jumping up and down about I thought

you know from a visual standpoint I thought they

did a lot of things well I thought they did a

good job of updating things but still Capturing

the classic look and feel for the most part I

Think Michael Keaton was fine in that role for

the most part Acting wise maybe the highlight

of the film Is that fair to say I don't know

I'm not gonna be able to go into my major problems

that I have as much because it would be complete

spoilers But I do have some major problems with

how the ending is played out. Let me just say

this way. One of my favorite parts of the original

RoboCop films was the fact that obviously we're

dealing with... Well, I mean, I like the concept

overall. I like the whole idea of the whole man

versus machine thing and how you balance that,

et cetera. But in the original one, you know,

obviously he has certain programs that are in

place And I absolutely remember loving the part

and I'll have to rewatch this to see exactly

how that sequence goes down but where there is

a an individual that basically he can't Do what

he wants to do because there's a program that

prevents him from doing it But one of my favorite

parts of that original film is then humans obviously

I don't know, kind of touched on a bunch of flaws,

I guess, of human nature. Number one, arrogance,

I guess. Or number two, the idea that we're ultimately

smarter than everything else, or that we can

outsmart or outfox things. And the fact that

then that human character does something which

bypasses the programming in a RoboCop, which

now makes him a criminal, which now allows the

RoboCop to do what he needs to do. The situation

presented itself for them to do something very

similar in this film and they chose not to and

I didn't quite understand why and I didn't like

How they did it instead if that makes sense?

Yeah, actually kind of know where you're going

and I can kind of go off that because There were

stuff in this movie that surprised me it was

It started off better than I anticipated, but

to kind of go off what you were saying, I think

the biggest thing it lacked was that thing like

that. How they solve that issue is there's really

very little reason for it. Things just kind of

happen. And I think that's probably a big issue

with me. I had with like the last, I would say.

30 minutes or so where you lose progression of

the story and things just kind of start happening

and There is little to no reason at times. It

just seems to kind of fit and I do think they

got the character of rebel comp, right? I think

they got his I liked his look I know there's

a lot of people when like the first images came

out that they were like, oh it looks really stupid

It looks really dumb, but I think it fit it's

a little bit more sleek. I liked how they kind

of Played all my homage to the original with

like the gray look in the beginning and then

they updated it But I liked it. I thought if

it fine the motorcycle thing. I thought was pretty

cool, too So I thought they got Robocop right,

but I think they got the world the world he resides

in kind of wrong and just If you the premise

of the story really is like the idea that Robocop

is supposed to be created to try to make Americans

feel More welcoming towards robots being on the

streets because it's a market that they're not

tapping into it's in the trailer You can see

that, you know, there's robots across the world

That America has put in different countries to

kind of secure those areas, but they're not allowed

in the United States So let's get rebel cop to

kind of fix that and I guess I just didn't feel

like it sold that idea very well or I thought

the movie lacked an antagonist I minus you know,

minus the person who helps create RoboComp. I

felt like there wasn't really someone really

to get kind of angry with. We talked about Michael

Keaton's character and I liked his character.

I thought he was a nice character, but I don't,

I guess I felt like I don't have an enemy that

this film was going towards or I don't see like

the point. I think it kind of loses a huge amount

of steam near the end. Once like RoboComp kind

of starts rewriting his program like you mentioned

it I don't know it just kind of loses its steam

and I'm just like I don't know where this is

going like where are you going with this and

it just I don't know it felt really flat for

me I think I agree with a lot of things you said

there actually almost everything I agree with

the visual part of it as far as the suit and

the look I think they got it right I don't understand

what people were complaining about for me it

Like I said, it does the updating and modernizing

it with still keeping it the same. I think obviously

there's two different colors that people go back

and forth about, but I think that was done well

too as far as how that played out. And I was

on board with especially the first, I don't know,

I'm just saying, I don't know exactly timestamps,

but I'm saying like the first half. I like how

they introduce his character. I like how they

introduce the suit. Um, I like how they showed

kind of him, you know, um, in and out of the

suit, I guess you can say. Um, and I thought

they set up things, you know, well, and that,

you know, he was going to have to deal with,

uh, avenging obviously what happened to him.

That's not spoiling anything. Um, and that he

was dealing with, you know, the idea of being

robo cop and being part of that suit. But I think

what they missed is, like you said, the world

that he's in. They have one scene where he's

being unveiled, announced, where he isn't able

to enforce the law right on the spot. I thought

it needed more of that. It needed more of him

dealing with society at some point first. Because

basically, they have this figure who's going

to be the new look of law enforcement, making

our streets safe. but they don't really touch

any they do such a quick job of showing that

purpose before he is immediately into the main

plot line of the vengeance and everything where

I didn't get enough of I think one thing that

was cool about the original RoboCops is they

showed a believable, well believable as much

as you can believe it I guess, but a believable

reality of how they would actually be as a police

officer. And I don't think we got the police

officer part of this enough in this film Yeah,

that's very true. Like he just kind of I feel

you you got more of his story beforehand like

more of who Alex Murphy was But you got less

of like what Robocop was and and I think they

just I think it's too easy to just be like oh,

we're changing, you know the levels of certain

drugs or proteins or food or dopamine or whatever

it is I don't know if I just enjoy that part

because it makes, I don't know. As soon as they

started doing that, I felt like the movie started

going downhill. Not because of that, but because

it became too much of a focus of we're just turning

them on and off type of thing. I don't know,

I want more of the actual struggle between the

human and the machine. And I can't deal with

just the fact that, oh, he's part human so he

can just override everything at any time. Yeah,

yeah, it's it kind of hinted at it like there's

a line like oh what is his soul cuz there's like

there's a factor we can control But it did it

did lack it felt like a really easy write -off.

It's like always human So he's rewriting it why

can you rewrite it? Well, it's because of the

human factor and that's it like that's that's

the reasoning you get behind it and see and I

think it would have been better if You know,

like I said like the original one where either

someone does something where all sudden it's

within the programming or he as a human aspect

of him can can trick somebody into doing something

that then makes his program accept it. I thought

more of that needed to be there. And on a completely

different note, I mentioned Michael Keaton as

being one of the highlights. I don't want to

go without saying that Gary Oldman did a fine

job as well. Yeah, yeah. He was a lot of fun.

It was weird. I felt like his character in a

way. I talked about how there wasn't really a

villain in it. And I kind of felt like his character

was maybe the Biggest villain in some instances

like he I think was kind of brought into like

the situation. He played like a doctor and But

he does a lot of questionable things But then

he kind of you know, there's progression there

and I'm like, well, he's kind of like the person

I felt like most of the negative stuff that happens

to a dreadful copper beat was because of him

and I felt like that one unresolved I do want

to say though. How did you feel that? Robocop

himself, Joel Kinnaman did in that role. I thought

he was fine. I don't think he was the problem.

I don't think the people that were involved actor

-wise were the problem. I don't think the characters

that were involved necessarily were the problem.

I think it was more so the choices that were

made by the writing slash directing team and

what those... people and what those characters

would be doing. I think the setup was there.

I think you had the people in place. I think

you had the characters in place. I think you

had the actors that fit those characters fine

to pull it off, minus either needing more development

with a few of those characters, like you said,

in order to have that antagonist. I think there

was a couple potential people there that if they

would have done it right or else you had to add

someone else or something. Yeah, I think the

people were in place. I just don't know if they

did the right things with them I think they did

for half the movie and they set it all up well

And then I just think it goes off kilter and

kind of spirals out of control Yeah, like I like

what they were setting up that they they seem

to have like Robocop when he's established has

a more humanity to him There's he isn't just

like this Robocop with no, you know, it's monotone

and he's He's just you know, you know a robot

with somewhat human like they kind of started

him off where he's a little bit different He

is has more human qualities He he has that edge

to him and I thought that'd be interesting road

to go down where you have this man who literally

is barely together anymore and put together with

just pieces of robot and You know what that means

and what you could do with that But like you

said they kind of just abandoned that with you

know this idea of dopamine. It's okay. We're

gonna get rid of that and go back to what the

old Robocop was and I think you just ended up

losing your, potentially your best angle with

the movie and just going back and becoming just,

you know, trying to do what the other Robocop

movie did but not doing it as well. I guess the

other big question is it is RoboCop. So the question

is well, was it fun? How was the action? How

did you feel like the action was? Did you enjoy

that most of the action scenes? Did they stand

out to you in any way? Yeah, I did for the most

part I thought Nothing that like wowed me so

to speak But I enjoyed mostly action scenes.

I enjoyed the idea that you really got to feel

for the weight of his outfit, etc. I did think

towards the climactic, I guess, action scene.

At one point that it could have been built up

a little bit better, it seemed like it was kind

of happened and there wasn't really a lot of

buildup towards it. But overall, I thought they

did a good job showing his suit, his weaponry.

Um, and especially in the training scenes, they

did a good job of kind of explaining. I really

liked, I did like that part about it where they

were really comparing him to the, um, the pure

machines. And I thought at that point, everything

in the movie was going well. And I thought all

that was excellent stuff to show. And that was

kind of building up the potential. Um, and I

liked the training sequences with him, you know,

kind of the live training and stuff. So I thought

all that was good. I thought maybe there was

a few times, like I said, at the end where the

action could have been a little bit more built

up as far as certain deaths or certain things

like that. But other than that, it was fine.

Yeah. Actually, like you said, the training sequence

I thought was a lot of fun. I thought that was

pretty cool. I thought it was shot well. The

director also, this is the first time he's directing

an American film. I have not seen the elite squad

films, which are these cop drama films from Take

Place in Brazil, and I've heard amazing things

about them, but I've unfortunately not seen them.

So I was curious how he would transition into,

you know, an American movie. And I thought the

action was strong for the most part. Like you

said, there are some issues. And I apologize

one of my favorite actually action scenes was

one of the first ones Where it's just Alex Murphy

and his partner trying to like fight their way

out of this restaurant. I thought that was shot

really well. I liked The angles that the camera

was using I thought it was like a common situation,

but done really well So I'm like, oh, I kind

of like this a little more grittier than I expected

A little it felt a little bit more realistic

than I was anticipating But it goes away from

that, which I'm not surprised because you're

suddenly dealing with a rebel cop. So you're

not going to have that type of action. But I

did like that. There were moments I liked. I

liked the interface, like the using of first

person shooting. I did like there was a specific

scene that's like at night, not nighttime, but

it's dark. So it's a lot of night vision. I like

that. I thought that was probably after that

moment is when the movie kind of lost me. I liked

that moment, but then it just it just didn't

know where to go after that. And I think after

everything after that was just lesser than. And

if anything like he could have ended the movie

there, I probably would have liked it more. So,

yeah, no, I agree. So overall, I mean, if you

were people always like the scores here for your

given given this one score, where would you land

at? At the end of the day, like I said, I think

they think the thing they got right was. Robocop,

but they got so much else wrong and like the

last I Would say last half like when you're half

of your movie isn't successful and your first

half isn't amazing I can't give you a passing

grade So I went back and forth with this one,

but I if I was gonna give this an actual grade

I would give it a two out of five. So that's

You know didn't like it. Basically. I it just

did not completely work for me to be fair it

That could have been a lot worse if anything,

so how about yourself? It definitely could have

been worse and I don't like the fact that I'm

gonna say that I've given her a name that says

didn't like necessarily because I do think they

did a lot of stuff right and they did a lot of

things that Were good and they made a lot of

wise choices at the beginning of the film But

yeah, there's just way too much that kind of

spirals like I said out of control to give it

a passing grade So I'm laying in the same as

you I'm giving that two out of five All right,

so that's two two out of fives for us and If

you agree or disagree with our takes, let us

know in our comment section below. And we'll

also leave all the different ways of the feedback

at the end of the episode. But before we go,

we also want to take a look at the movies that

will be coming out in theater as well as DVD

and Blu -ray. And it is a slow week, to say the

least, coming out in theater. Not a great deal.

You do have Kevin Costner's attempt of becoming

Liam Neeson in Three Days to Kill. Also, you

have Pompeii, the disaster film, which I think

you might know the ending towards. I'm a little

curious. I'm just kind of curious how are you

going to make that into a movie when you kind

of know. Also, Opening Limited, which will be

expanding shortly, is the Wren Wise Rises, which

got a lot of claim last year for it being...

It was nominated for Golden Globe for best foreign

film and it looks like it was one of the best

animated films for a lot of people last year.

We'll finally get a chance to see it. Anything

else coming in theater that interests you at

all? No, I will go ahead and take advantage this

week and see either another film that's in the

theater from a few weeks ago that I haven't seen

yet or some films at home and I will save my

money until there's not another release coming

out until... the last release date of the month

when Stalingrad comes out on the 28th that I

might see. Yeah, it's a slow, you know, it's

that type of year or that time of year where

it's not a lot great coming out. And then, of

course, DVD and Blu -ray, unfortunately, is not

that much better. I guess on the bright side,

there are stuff coming out next week. So save

your money this weekend because next week it's

going to be a doozy. I don't know why they didn't

decide to split it up a little bit, but a lot

of these movies I've never even heard of, so

I can't really give any claim to them. Coming

out is Afternoon Delight, Battle of the Damned,

On the Job, and The Thorn. Again, heard none

of those. I guess you could also say Game of

Thrones Season 3 is coming out, so if you have

something, at least TV -wise. And then to finish

up the episode, way back when we talked about

Last week, we asked you guys what your favorite

Philip Seymour Hoffman performance was. We didn't

get a great deal of feedback. I'm not that surprised.

We did have a later episode last week, so I'm

sure some people are still trying to catch up

with it now. But we did get some people mentioning

what they liked, what stood out to them for Hoffman's

career. There's a lot to choose from. So from

the front it says, God Hoffman's career was so

amazing. I think the first role he let me know

just how amazing he was was in Boogie Nights.

He took a role that could have been nothing and

made it into a standout movie. That guy could

do it all. And I think I saw Boogie Nights I

think after Hoffman became a huge name. But I

know a lot of people point to that movie as like

the first thing that like, hey, this actor is

a serious actor. He has talent. Also, On a different

spectrum, Chuck mentioned, my fellow co -host

on Talking in Circles mentioned, I'm probably

not gonna get taken seriously for this, but the

answer, but I really... loved Hoffman in Twister.

I haven't really seen a lot of his movies, but

I thought he was really funny in that role, and

he made the movie a little more down to earth.

After all the special effects were a little crazy,

but I still loved that movie. But I thought Hoffman

was fun and engaging, kind of made it relatable,

like he was that type of guy that everyone knows,

just silly and fun. So how about your, you were

getting, I'm sorry, I didn't think I cut you

off there. No, we just got a, we definitely got

the whole gamut as far as. types of films that

he was in. Some that I, you know, I wasn't expecting

to get all those that mention like, you know,

Twister and what did we have here? Along Came

Polly got a mention, I believe. You know, The

Master. So we definitely got a lot of different

films there. I didn't follow his career at the

beginning. I was kind of late in the game as

far as No, you know recognizing him and and kind

of doing that type of thing but if I was to probably

go to a favorite I liked him in doubt I liked

him in Capote, I guess. He's just done so much.

It's kind of hard to land on a specific one.

And a lot of stuff you probably didn't know that

he was in because you watched it before you knew

of him like you were talking about with Twister.

A lot of those films where he was in them and

you probably just didn't realize it until you

go back. So yeah, probably doubt would be my

number one. Yeah, definitely. I mean, one to

talk about that. I honestly didn't even realize

he was in until animated at animation addict

meant I mentioned that Phil Seymour Hoffman provided

the voice for the movie Marion Max, which is

a movie I really like and I didn't even know

that was him. So that's crazy. Probably my favorite

Hoffman performance is maybe not the most notable

or recognizable, but it's from Philip Seymour

Hoffman. It's from Charlie Wilson's war. I just

find him, he's so much energy in that movie.

He's just unmistakable. His intro to that was

one of my favorite scenes. It's him with this

huge argument with his superior. He plays a CIA

agent and it's just, he's such a huge presence

and it's so funny at the same time. He's just

ferocious and it's an amazing performance. And

I think at that time, I didn't really know who

Hoffman was. He looks so different. He's got

this really crazy mustache and odd hair and big

gigantic glasses. But I think he makes that movie

so much better. I love that movie, mainly because

of his performance. And I think that's something

he did a lot, was that he would make a movie

better just by stepping into it. I haven't seen

Thount, so I really can't mention that. And he

was obviously great in Capote. That's where he

won his Oscar. But he has so much... Of a career

some I still need to catch up with so All right,
