About this Episode

Steve and Mike dive into Christopher Nolan's 2010 mind-bender Inception, discussing the film's complex plot, stellar ensemble cast, and stunning visual effects. While both acknowledge the movie's technical excellence and critical acclaim, they wrestle with whether the layered narrative and pacing work for them as viewers. They explore the film's development history, casting choices, and production trivia, including Nolan's refusal to shoot in 3D.

What's the most resilient parasite? An idea.

A single idea from the human mind can build cities.

An idea can transform the world and rewrite all

the rules. Which is why... I have to steal it.

Never recreate from your memory. Always imagine

new places. He's hiding something. We need to

find out what that is. We gotta break out of

here. Give him the kick! This was not a part

of the plan! Welcome to the fourth of ten special

episodes. You might be asking yourself. Why did

I did I just say that well? I'll tell you in

a moment This is M wire brought to you by the

geek cast a radio network I'm one of your hosts

Steve Joe and Mike joining me is Steve Megatron.

Hello good day, sir Today we're going to be talking

about that mind bender inception. So how are

you sir? fuckingly good Well, that's that's what

we're doing we're we're Talking about a movie

that mind fucks you yes exactly So yeah originally

there was only gonna be five special episodes

of M wire before the return in episode 81 well

Steve decided to buck the system and do a Pirates

of the Caribbean month so Steve will be doing

all four pirates movies in additional four additional

special episodes So those will actually be coming

in between this episode inception and when we

get to Independence Day for the 4th of July.

Yes. ID4. Stop. Start paying attention. Stop

being distracted. Sure. Arrgh. So what are you

been up to besides getting your pirate stuff

together? Oh, well, I'm after this going to be

recording my second pirates run Yeah, I fucked

up the first one Other than that everything's

been going great. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah same thing

for me. So yeah, just Just the usual, getting

stuff launched, getting interviews and all that

good stuff. So, we're gonna head to Steve's Just

the Fact and we'll be back with our thoughts

on Inception. Inception is a 2010 science fiction

action film written, co -produced, and directed

by Christopher Nolan. The film features an ensemble

cast starting Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe,

Joseph Gordon -Levitt, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy,

Cillian Murphy, and Michael Caine. DiCaprio plays

Dom Cobb, a specialized corporate spy and thief.

His work consists of secretly extracting valuable

information from commercial companies from the

unconscious mind of his targets while they are

asleep and dreaming. Unable to visit his children,

Cobb is offered a chance to regain his old life

in exchange for an almost impossible task, Inception.

The planting of an idea into a target's subconscious.

Development began roughly nine years before Inception

was released. In 2001, Nolan wrote an 80 -page

treatment about the Dreamstealers presenting

the idea to Warner Bros. It was originally envisioned

to be a horror film inspired by concepts of lucid

dreaming and dream incubation. Nolan opted to

work on Batman Begins, The Prestige, and The

Dark Knight before actually selling the script

to Warner Bros. Inception was a ref... Officially

budgeted at 160 million, a cost that was split

between Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures.

Nolan's reputation and success with The Dark

Knight helped secure the film's 100 million in

advertising expenditures. The box office for

this movie was a huge success. The film grossed

over $21 million on its opening day, with an

opening weekend gross of $62 .7 million. Overall,

Inception has grossed $800 million worldwide,

and is currently one of the highest -grossing

films of all time. In addition to strong box

office results, Inception has also grossed $68

million in DVD sales. Inception received wide

critical acclaim, with numerous critics praising

it for its originality cast crew. score and visual

effects. The film received eight Academy Award

nominations including Best Picture, Best Original

Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Art

Direction, and won four awards for Best Sound

Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Cinematography,

and Best Visual Effects. In addition to that,

the film opened to strongly positive reviews

Rotten Tomatoes reports that 86 % of 274 critics

gave the film a positive review with an average

score of 8 out of 10. And finally, Inception

was listed as number one of critics' top 10 lists

of 2010, and it was secondly mentioned behind

the social network. This has been Just the Facts,

now back to the show. This is a film that got

me thinking about the other shit that I had to

do. It's like oh That's what I was gonna look

up on Wikipedia pause the film. Oh, you know

You know all this not This isn't the film is

great. Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to

diss the film in any way But it just it's not

something that caught my attention at all Yeah,

I I'd like the film But as usual anything that

everybody flocks towards One I have a negative

concept of it right then there because to me

It goes along the same lines as the social network

avatar this was another one of those that everybody

had to flock to this was another one that killed

the The other films in the theater at the times

at least till Nolan came out with The Dark Knight,

but... I don't know, the movie is good, don't

get me wrong, but it's such a mindfuck that if

you miss any couple minutes of footage, you're

screwed. See, for me it's not even that, it's

just like from beginning to end. Like, I get

the idea behind the idea of the film, but...

It's not even if I missed something that I wouldn't

know what the hell was going on while I was actually

watching it from beginning to end It didn't capture

my attention. I don't know why Like the social

network. I saw that when I actually have it on

iTunes when it when it got released, you know

for for mass media like dvd on it i bought it

on itunes because i was and i was really interested

in that felt good course everybody nowadays is

all about social networking and all this all

that and i'm sure will cover social network at

some point here on wire don't know when but uh...

like the social network i was super excited to

see that and that caught my attention this i

don't know this just didn't catch my attention

at all i have was a film, 148 minutes. I think

I have four notes out of the entire movie, which

I already told you one. I get the idea behind

the idea, but the movie's too weird for me. It's

just way too weird. And like you said in the

Just the Facts thing, this was originally intended

to be a horror film. Well, if it had been a horror

film... Wouldn't be here talking about it cuz

I wouldn't watch it because I don't watch horror

movies. I don't have a choice. Oh Well, yeah,

I have a choice because I'm single and I'm not

you know, I'm married I have to concede if I

want her to watch my films once in a while Yeah,

I'm not a ball attached to a chain. Thank you.

Sorry Okay, um, you know I find you know when

I was watching it. I found it. I found myself

very disconnected like I I think my favorite

character was the character of the one that um

Oh, what's her name? Emma page Ellen page Yes,

Ellen page yeah, I think I Kinda got her aspect

of it more than anybody else's like she's trying

to tell these guys that there's something wrong

with cob there's you know, there's something

more going on there and Other than that I Had

no interest in any of these characters hell at

first because this is a Nolan film and this did

come out after the Dark Knight I thought Because

I saw Michael Cain in this I thought freaking

bail was in this And the first time I watched

it, the first time I rented it from Redbox, I

was like, OK, well, I'll give Inception a try.

Everybody's been saying, oh, it's such a great,

great film. Everybody's saying, oh, you need

to see this. And that first viewing, not even

the viewing I did just two hours ago today, the

first viewing, I'm like, OK, so when's Batman

going to show up? Where's Christian Bale? Because

in the trailer, I don't know if I was mistaking.

another character for bail you know another actor

for bail because in the trailer it shows michael

cain and i was like oh okay so it's kind of like

another batman thing um but i just i couldn't

connect with any of the people at all in this

um you know as i said before i've seen it twice

now both times while watching it i've paused

it to go do other things you know it's like It's

kind of like going to a movie theater and Going

to sit down. You know you get your drinks you

get your popcorn you get all this crap that you

don't need and You end up getting up in the middle

of the movie to go to the bathroom or Whatever

it's that same type of thing it just I don't

know and then my other note my my final note

here It is a great movie the effects were awesome.

I Just couldn't stay with it it It just didn't

I don't know. What do you feel about this one?

I like the film First and foremost. I like it

better than I liked avatar Which I'm not getting

into that here the social network ever watch

This would have been one of the better movies

of that year, but again What year did this come

out 2010 2010 last year? Just swore there's some

other movie that I liked better last year anyways

Yeah, I never went saw it in the theater. I saw

it when it hit DVD. But again, it had my attention

during parts of it and then other parts I kind

of was like, can we just skip to the next part?

I was getting bored. It's not that it isn't interesting

and that I don't get it, because I do. It's just

I don't. I felt it was too damn long. Yeah. A

lot of it was too drawn out. I mean, I see what

they were going for, and I admire what he did,

but it's not one of those movies I can watch

a lot. It's one of those movies I could visit

maybe once every year or two, whereas there's

other films I could watch every day and not get

bored with it. I do like that they ... like Cillian

Murphy and Michael Caine. For instance, they've

been in the two Batman films. I'm sure Sillian

Murphy will show up at some point in the third

one. Michael Caine was in The Prestige, so was

Christian Bale, which was also directed by Christopher

Nolan. He's constantly pulling his sack of people

around. For the next Batman film, Joseph Gordon

-Levitt and Tom Hardy are going to be in the

new film too. It's just kind of funny how they

keep pulling them all around. But Leonardo DiCaprio

on these guys, all of them did a pretty damn

good job in this film. Oh yeah, no, I'm not discounting

the actors at all. Great performances from everybody

all around. Just the characters and the story

and the plot. It just didn't... It was too thick.

It didn't, yeah. It didn't give me that... People

will like this. It didn't give me that kick.

You know? Yeah, kicking the balls. It just didn't

have... No, no, no, no, no. Not that kind of

kick. Like the kick that they're talking about

in the movie. The jump kick. Like when you're

asleep and you just startle away. That kind of

kick. It didn't give me the sensation of someone

kicking out my chair from underneath me and I

get soaked in freezing cold tub water. You know,

it just didn't give me that attention span at

all. The effects are awesome. When the city turned

upside down on itself, I thought that was hilarious.

That was just a really awesome effect. That's

where the mind -bending comes. But you're right,

it is way too layered. Cat appearance? Yes. You

know, it's just... Too many layers and honestly

seriously this movie has me scared to even go

to sleep and dream anymore because it's just

like The concept of inception the concept of

planting an idea in someone's subconscious. That's

scary as hell I'd do it I know gates you would

like to give me a million dollars Corporeal it's

not I Actually in preparation for this episode

I Don't use the discussions tab on our Facebook

fan page as much At all because really we don't

get that many replies I think I've created three

threads over there, but I created a thread because

I want to know the question is If you could plant

an idea in anyone's brain, who would it be and

why, and what would be the idea that you would

plant in someone's subconscious? For me, it's

very simple. Kevin, podcasting is more important

than real life. I know that would never take.

But that would well, you know, it's one of those

things or well, whatever anyway, you know, um

Do you have a favorite effect in the movie? I

Mean it's it's it's a good movie and everything,

but I really don't I don't know My favorite like

if I had to pick a favorite It would be when

she's creating the world, but it's when they

are under the bridge And she's moving the mirrors

around and then all of a sudden she puts her

hands up, she puts her hand up and the mirror

just shatters and it's a brand new part of the

world. I really like that. I thought that was

really, really cool. Getting into the casting,

we've kind of mentioned everybody. Ellen Page,

Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy.

Michael Caine. I almost said Tom Caine. Michael

Caine, do you have a favorite actor or actress

out of this? Say that DiCaprio did good, Gordon

Levitt did good, and Ellen Page. Everybody else

did good too, but I mean, those are pretty much

the top three of the film. Yeah, and I think

this is the first film that I've seen Ken Watanabe

in since The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise. Wow.

I know he's I know he's before people you know

start start saying you start commenting. Oh my

god He's been in plenty of other things. Yes,

I understand that he has been in plenty of other

things like he did The unbroken he was in Batman

Begins video game You know, yeah, he's done other

stuff I know but Like this and the last samurai

are the only two things that I really remember

him from You know for me I I like the Ellen page

character the best probably Just cuz she's like

an outsider kind of coming in But it just So

let's see here getting into some trivia the labyrinth

style of the movie's logo resembles the logo

of Christopher Nolan's production company Sin

copy. Well, that's cool. Mm -hmm Evan Rachel

Wood was Nolan's first choice to play Adrienne,

but she turned down the Nolan considered casting

Emily Blunt Rachel McAdams and Emma Roberts,

but chose Ellen Page instead Let's see, Leonardo

DiCaprio was Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan's

only choice for the role of Cobb. He's got some

really, really diverse roles under his belt.

He's done everything. Yeah, I have to agree.

He's done quite a bunch of things. I mean, you

cannot typecast him as anything. I mean, unless

you're gonna try to typecast him as Jack from

Titanic, but... Well, it's not like where you

see, like, Nicolas Cage, he plays the same looking

and acting character in everything he's in, despite

whatever its role may be. You know, I mean, there's

certain people that are just, you know, you've

got, I don't know, like Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.

I mean, there's people that just can't get out

of it, but he does have a pretty diverse... movie

base yeah i mean he's done some like a lot like

you examples i can think of that are so different

from each other um catch me if you can the beach

uh... titanic uh... what's the one he played

uh... king louis and uh... the man in the iron

mask uh... you know a bunch bunch of different

roles Prince of the movie were shipped to theaters

under the name hourglass. I Don't know if I can

see this I don't know if I could look at this

movie the same way if it was called hourglass

No, I definitely think conception was a good

Title it definitely gets you interested enough

to pull you in. Oh Yeah Get it pull you in yeah

mind. It's yeah mind fuck According to cinematographer

Wally P fister Warner Brothers executives approached

Christopher Nolan about making the film in 3d

But he refused the idea claiming it will distract

the storytelling experience of inception well,

I can yeah Yeah, I could see that but at the

same time I I'm glad he said no to the 3d though

Yeah, I am too, but at the same time I'm still

confused like I'm not confused as to what the

plot was but it just it's It's like you said

before it's too thick as it is and the 3d would

have made it ten times worse Yeah, yeah that

would have that would have ruined the movie Yes,

it would have well 3d ruins a lot of the movies,

but I'm not gonna go into that either True. Yeah,

that's a completely different thing. Last bit

of trivia here that I'm going to read off is

a series of numbers keeps appearing. The number

that Fisher gives Cobb and Arthur is 528491.

The two hotel rooms used are rooms 528 and 491.

The number that Eames as a woman gives to Fischer

is 528491. The combination to the strong room

starts with 52, and the combination to the safe

is the same number, 528491. This is all to reinforce

the importance of the number throughout the film.

Hmm, that's interesting. All right, so... The

number 23 all over again. Yeah, exactly. Getting

into the IGN replacement crew one through four

one is don't watch it even if it's free Two is

worth a watch if it's free on TV three is worth

adding to the Netflix list It's not on Netflix.

So you can't do that. You have to get it by DVD

from them Or for this is a must add to your DVD

collection Honestly the movie itself I would

probably give a 8 out of 10 as far as overall

rating, but as far as watchability for me, it's

a 1 or a 2. I would agree. I'd give it an 8 out

of 10 or a 9 out of 10 based on the film itself.

As for watching it, if you're really into this

kind of movie, Then I would say a four, but I

being that I you know I Don't watch films. I

mean I have films I have shitload of movies,

but out of all the the ones that I watch it's

pretty much the same set I would probably say

like a two or three Just because I mean I own

it so I mean technically I could put a four but

I would say it's at least worth the Netflix ad.

Yeah. Being that I wouldn't watch it all the

time. Yeah, exactly. Alright, so, and you can

find it on DVD, you can find it on iTunes. It

is not on Netflix instant, but I'm sure you could

probably get it through them. Eventually it'll

end up on instant, but that's... Yeah, it's rights

issues and all that stuff. uh... like i said

it is on multiple version dvds i'm sure there's

a one -disc two -disc three -disc ten -disc blu

-ray not saying there's a ten -disc blu -ray

but that's the way it seems to be going nowadays

where you have the blu -ray versions have six

seven eight desks like oh my god so yeah it is

Um. Yeah. No. This is not a film for me. a film

is the movie's great but it's just it's not something

i can watch i will probably never watch this

film ever again will more than likely watch it

again just not anytime soon i saw it probably

six months ago i probably won't watch it till

late next year this is a movie where like you

know when fx shows movies they'll show Like Don

Tucker must die or they'll show catch me if you

can or they'll show Any of the Marvel movies

that I've already been released like Axeman or

you know This is one of those things where if

I'm channel surfing and it's on I will Literally

go past it and not like oh, okay. That's on FX.

What else is on? You know, I I love baseball

So I'm not one of those people that oh baseball

is boring baseball puts people to sleep which

those people seriously need their head checked.

I would much rather watch baseball than watch

this movie. I wouldn't go that far. When I say

that, I mean it as if I had a choice. This isn't

saying anything against the movie. It's saying

that baseball would capture my attention more

than this film did. What if somebody glued your

head to the screen and made you watch it mmm

that would never happen What if they made you

watch this mind fuck of a movie that would never

happen you and your lies Kevin will go hog -tie

your ass at your house make you stare at the

screen watching inception Right. He's too lazy

for that He couldn't even show up to this recording

to give his thoughts in the movie, so I'm not

going there. Thank you for joining us here on
