About this Episode

Steve and Mike preview the biggest films coming to theaters in summer 2011, covering releases from April through August. They discuss their expectations for blockbusters like Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Green Lantern, alongside smaller releases like Hobo with a Shotgun and Zookeeper. The hosts share their honest takes on which films they'll see in theaters versus waiting for DVD, and explain why trailer saturation sometimes kills their interest in movies.

Hello and welcome to Movie Week in Review, Summer

of 2011. In this episode, it's a special episode,

not a part of the regular M -Wire, but it's a

special presentation, obviously. And joining

me is... FJ1 Mike, hello. Hello. And we will

be talking about the 2011 summer movies. Yes.

We are back, but not really. We're gonna have

several specials like this leading up to the

return of MWIRE on Independence Day this year.

We're going to be doing a special on reviewing

Independence Day, the Will Smith 1996 film, and

then on the three -year anniversary, Steve, myself,

and Kevin will be coming back and we will be

starting, well, not starting. Didn't know this

probably but we're talking about adventures and

babysitting in the three -year anniversary or

two -year anniversary I should say So yeah, what's

been going on with you? Plenty of stuff with

my my various sites and then of course we've

got the top 100 animated series of all -time

project Yes, which is getting in a lot of Feedback,

so that's good Yes, yes So, shall we get right

into this? Yes, we shall, and we will start out

with the month of April. For me, there really

isn't a lot here in April. April's not usually

a big movie month to my knowledge as far as what

I can remember. I've seen trailers on end for

Hop, which is from the people that created Despicable

Me. Have you seen the trailer for this thing?

Yes, isn't that the one where the bunny poops

a jelly bean and then the girl eats it? Yes,

I've seen this. I love Despicable Me, but come

on, seriously? They go from full -on animated

CGI film To live -action CGI film. I mean seriously

They're only pulling an Alvin and the chipmunks

that's true and the damn money kind of looks

like a Longer -eared version of Alvin and the

chipmunks Yes, I Don't know one of the reasons

just so people know when people don't say oh

well And I'm looking at you Kevin optimus solo

One of the reasons why I sometimes get so negative

about movies is because I see endless trailers.

I see trailers all the time on TV for these damn

things. And I get so pissed off from seeing the

trailers that it makes me not want to go see

the movie or even rent the movie on DVD. So that's

one of my main reasons why if I don't attach

to something and I don't like it, then... I'll

wait three or four years to see it. Very true.

We also have, let's see, Insidious. I believe

I've seen trailers for this. I'm not sure. Have

you seen any trailers for Insidious? No, I have

not. I could have swore I saw something. Let's

see here. Oh. Apparently I haven't because it's

from the writer director team that behind saw

and paranormal activity Redefine the haunted

house genre and insidious this horror film is

the terrifying story of a family who shortly

after moving Discover that dark spirits have

possessed their home. Yeah, this is gonna be

a skip for me Yeah, I like some horror, but I

don't quite care to be honest The paranormal

activity was crap in my opinion. I know I might

catch flack for that but honestly it's just a

bunch of retarded people running around with

a freaking movie camera and going, ooh there's

scary shit. And Saw, that's done. So yeah, I

have no interest in anything in the horror genre

now. I'd actually call the Saw movies bad comedies.

This is bad comedy. John, is that you? Here's

a hint. And then I've seen trailers on end for

Hannah, but it seems like it's one of those...

types of movies that is just from what i've seen

from the trailers and i'm looking at the information

on coming soon dot net which we should also say

that's where our that's where we're getting our

our list from here as far as the releases yeah

this is basically just from looking over the

plot synopsis on coming soon dot net this is

basically your everyday type of You know assassin

movie She's out to kill the one person who holds

the secret that she needs, you know something

like that I mean it's very much in the vein at

least to me from what I've seen it from what

I've read online It's very much to me in the

vein of the alias TV series as far as Sydney

Bristow the character of Sydney Bristow wanting

to find answers to her life type of thing and

This is so not something I would see Yeah, well

I saw the trailer for this and to be honest The

the the look style of it doesn't really interest

me, but at the same time This looks like it could

be a good action movie. It's not what I'll see

in the theater. However. I will see it when it

hits DVD Yeah We also have, I mean, there's a

bunch of other movies, but right now, if they're

not showing trailers, we're probably not gonna

mention them. I think the only other one so far

that I've seen trailers for up to April 15th

is Scream 4. And... Again, I'm not too into those

type of movies. I supposedly they're gonna close

the franchise with this film, but... You know,

we've seen franchises like this that say oh the

fourth one's gonna be the last one or you know

You know, you know stuff like this I mean the

trailer it looks good. The story looks good from

what I've seen in the trailer But again because

I haven't been a real big fan of the scream movies

again because of over saturation In the media.

This is probably something I would skip Yeah,

I'm probably more than likely gonna go back and

watch the first three even though it's not needed

for this because it is a sequel and it does kind

of pick up where the other three left off but

it's supposed to be many many years later so

technically you probably don't need to see the

first three but it wouldn't hurt so I'm probably

gonna go back and watch them all with my wife

just to see them just for the fact that it was

Wes Craven that directed them which did you know

the nightmare series and But yeah, so it's not

going to be one of those ones that I'm going

to just highlight and go see in the theater.

It'll be another DVD rental, but I'll probably

pick that up before I'll pick up Hannah. Yeah,

Scream 4, I remember from seeing the trailers

recently, it said something about the plot is

where it's, I don't know if it's a year anniversary,

whether it's 10 year anniversary since the Scream

killer or whatever. all of a sudden somebody

else is doing it or you know whatever so that's

that's one of the plot lines as far as the continuity

of the film now April 22nd is April 22nd there

really isn't anything here in April 22nd Now,

you've missed a couple movies for the beginning

of the month. Did I? Yes, there's two. First

week of April is Source Code. Oh, yeah, Source

Code. Yeah, I've seen trailers for that. Which

that looks interesting in the sense that it's

an action thriller, and it's got Jake Gyllenhaal

in it playing this decorated soldier who is constantly

waking up in a body of an unknown man, but his

mission is he's gotta like prevent this bombing

of this train. But he can only be in that identity

for the last eight minutes of that life. I think

it's, is it eight minutes or is it? Yeah, it's

eight minutes. Really? I thought when I saw the

trailer it said like eight seconds or something.

No. Okay, but yeah and It's yeah, it's just it

looks interesting just to see how this is going

to be pulled off Kind of gives me a kind of a

like the the movie deja vu type feel Yeah, I

would say it's a toss -up between deja vu which

I love deja vu for what it was It's a toss -up

between deja vu and honestly next so technically

Jake Gyllenhaal is the new Nicolas Cage slash

Denzel Washington type character. But I mean,

the trailer, it does look interesting. I'd probably

get it from Redbox for a buck or something like

that. This would be one that if I was going to

go to the theater, I would go see it over the

other three. But I'm probably still going to

wait for DVD here. A lot of these in this month,

I'll probably wait for DVD. Primarily because

I'm waiting for movies that are coming out May,

June, and July. There's really only one movie

that I want to talk about in April, one that

I'm really looking forward to. I'll let you get

to that one in just a second. There's one other

movie for this month that's worth warranting,

and that's Your Highness. It's it's going to

be I know it's going to be stupid just for the

fact that it was done by the people that did

pineapple express and it has Danny McBride in

it and James Franco who were both in pineapple

express the only thing that is brought to this

is that it has Natalie Portman in it and It's

kind of a funny kind of in -your -face comedy

Danny McBride's basically an idiot Royal idiot

and then his brother James Franco is Not an idiot,

but he's you know, he's royalty too, but he's

evil No, he's good. It's just that they're trying

to rescue Franco's Soon -to -be wife okay, and

Yeah, so it's it's gonna be a stupid movie, but

it's gonna be funny For a second there I was

getting and people do not crucify me for this

but for a second there I was getting DiCaprio

flashbacks from the man in the iron mask When

you said they're brothers and they're I'm like,

oh no Not the whole one is good one is bad thing

again No No, it's the bumbling idiot brother

with the brother that's got intelligence, but

yeah It looks like it'll be good, but that's

another DVD rental for me So I will let you get

under the last and best movie for the month Yeah

pretty much for me the only one that I really

really that I will actually go out to with like

TF2 and Michael actually step outside of his

house to go see fast five Now say what you want

about the fast nefarious franchise The only one

that I have not liked so far is Tokyo Drift I've

liked all the other ones and it's just I mean

these this series has been around since what

2000 I think I think is when the first 2000 2001

somewhere around there is when the very first

one came out and one of the reasons why I absolutely

love fast five is they I Think they're going

out with a bang and they're gonna end this franchise

because they've brought back every single major

cast member from all the other films. You've

got Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster,

Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris. Anybody that you've

seen in the Fast and the Furious franchise so

far? will be here with the exception of Michelle

Rodriguez because she got killed in the previous

film in Fast and Furious for The Fast and Furious,

whatever the hell it was called. And they've

added Dwayne The Rock Johnson as the guy who's

hunting them down. And this movie is going to

kick so much ass. I cannot wait to go see this

in theaters. To hell with April 1st and payday

make April 29th get here now Yeah, I'm Honestly,

I was done with the Fast and Furious franchise

before Tokyo drift I probably won't see this

and It's more so for the fact that I haven't

seen the third or fourth which the third one

I really wouldn't need to see but You really

only need to see one two and four for to see

this one But it kind of lost its, I don't know.

I just don't care past the second one. It's not

one of those series where I'd care to watch another

one. Yeah. Just, I mean, no offense to you. No,

no. Yeah, I know. It's to each their own. I mean,

that's more than fine. But yeah, it doesn't look.

Out of the five, I would say this one looks more

interesting because of who's in it. You have

this, you know kick -ass cast in here. So in

that sense, I'd say it's better but overall I

probably wouldn't see this and the and the other

thing is this is Supposed like like I said, you

know one two and four I mean there was that little

bit in Tokyo drift where where Dominic Toretto

had shown up at one point But I mean really Tokyo

drift is its own entity I mean it does count

as part of the franchise But one, two, and four,

as far as continuity -wise, is what you would

need to see before this. And this is basically

them pulling the big, I mean this is seriously

the biggest job that they've ever tried to pull.

This is like, I think it's in the trailer that

Diesel's character said it was like a one million

dollar job or something like that. I don't know,

it's one of those movies that... You know it

for me. It's one of those movies that I can go

to the theater. I like all the characters I like

all the actors you know I I can just go and I

can watch and enjoy it It isn't it isn't a movie

that I go to for the plot. I mean it's it's I

mean it does have so far They've had fairly good

plots in my opinion People will say no those

movies sucked which is fine. That's that's their

opinion as well, but For me because I've been

what like I said, I've been watching the franchise

for the last 11 years, you know It it's one of

those things where I want to see how it ends

because supposedly this is going to be the the

last franchise film for this The other one in

April that I just realized was on the list comes

after Fats and the Furious comes out April 29th

as well is hoodwinked to Hood versus Evil. Now,

the only reason why I bring this up is actually

for PCAST Radio Network cross promotion. After

our interview with Phil Lamar, he emailed me

and said, oh, I forgot to bring up in the what

am I doing, what do I have coming up thing, that

Phil Lamar will be a voice in Hoodwinked 2. So

this is a sequel to Hoodwinked. Basically, I

thought this is the third one. No, this is the

second is only though that they only made one

Okay, yeah, they only made one they haven't made

another one since this one So this looks this

isn't something I'll go to the theater to see

but this is a movie that you know a red box rental

or something like that, but I like the first

film mainly for the voice cast because you have

Patrick Warburton in it. You have a whole bunch

of other really, really cool people. You've got

Glenn Close, Joan Cusack, Amy Poehler, David

Alan Greer, Andy Dick, even though I don't like

Andy Dick at all, Brad Garrett, Martin Short.

Cheech Marin, Tommy Chong are in it as voices

and it looks pretty good. I haven't seen a trailer

yet for it so maybe I should seek that out after

we get done with this but this is probably a

definite red box rental for me just because I

like the first film and I want to see what they're

doing now. I agree. I don't really have any other

statements on it. So we can move on to May. Yes,

we'll move on to May. Well, let's start out with,

I guess, Thor. OK. Yes. It looks to be interesting.

I'm not going to lie. I'm not a big fan of Thor

in general. I'm interested to see what they do

with this franchise. However, I really could

care less. This is probably not one of the ones

of Marvels I will see. There's nothing appealing

to me about Thor. I would rather see Captain

America. I'd rather see Iron Man because I think

it's more so that they're more relatable. Yeah,

I mean, Thor does come from, you know, Norse

gods and all that stuff, or whatever he comes

from, and... I mean, it's cool to see him in

something like Superhero Squad Show, which is

animation and all that, but... I mean, it does

look very interesting, but for me, it's probably

not something I'm gonna take, you know, time

out to go see in a theater. Yes. I will probably

wait till DVD if I'm going to see this at all.

I want to go back up the list for a minute, because

I want to talk about everybody that I know is

talking about hobo with a shotgun. You need to

click on that. Why? I don't know. Everybody I

know. I first heard it on The Action Room, which

is theactionroom .com. which is a little 15 minute,

20 minute weekly news update type things. And

then Mike Dodd over at This Week in Geek and

everybody is ranting and raving. And Mike Laidman

is ranting and raving how great Hobo with a shotgun

is. So since it's on the list here for a May

6 release, I wanted to look at it and see what

the plot was. It does star no one I know Honestly

the whole premise to it looks fucking stupid

It's just a bomb that comes from a train to A

new city not even saying what won And then where

criminals rule the streets and landlords evict

single mothers in the middle of the night Where

cities crime bosses reign supreme? Yeah, and

then uh so basically he just goes around starts

killing people Yeah, so it just goes to show

you what crazy Canadians have on their minds

Yeah, apparently killing people is one of them.

Yes Or you want to go to next I would probably

go to, and I'm going to skip over a couple. There's

a couple of romantic comedies that look interesting

that I'll probably end up seeing at some point

with my wife. But one of them would be Something

Borrowed and then Bridesmaids. I've seen trailers

for both of which look like they'll be funny.

But I don't know if they're worthy enough to

see in the theater. So I'll probably skip those.

Should we just jump down to Pirates? Yes. This

movie has me geeked, just because I liked the

original three, but more so because it's going

back to the elements of the first film. The second

and the third film were a little too dark, and

I think they're trying to lighten it up with

this. And I know that they're starting another

trilogy. And there's only a few people that are

carried over from the previous three. And that

would be Johnny Depp of course and then Jeffrey

Roth or rush and then a Couple of their you know

right -hand men yeah Johnny Depp's you know second

-in -command, and then you've got the the I think

the goofy guy and the guy with the missing eyeball

The other the other team, but I mean just so

all you fangirls know What's his nuts is not

in this movie? Orlando Bloom is not in it. They

tied off him and Keira Knightley's roles in the

previous film. They will not be back. They were

trying to go for a completely different cast,

which they did in the form of having Penelope

Cruz and Ian McShane as Johnny Depp's ex -girlfriend

and Blackbeard. This looks to be very interesting

and so far all the trailers I've seen look freaking

hilarious just because of what's going on. And

then everybody's fighting to get Jack Sparrow

on their team because he knows where the Fountain

of Youth is. Yeah. So it's funny. And then there's

zombies and creatures. And it's just totally

different league of its own. This, for me, I

don't dislike it at all. I dislike the hype and

the fandom behind it. This is one of those trailers

where I see it and it's like, really? They're

making another one of these movies again? And

this is probably something I won't see because

I haven't seen any of the previous films. It's

just not something I really care about, but...

Need to I need to clarify my opinion here. I

don't dislike it. I'm not against it It's just

something that isn't on my radar at all now this

I would say if You're not one that would watch

like Lord of the Rings or any of that kind of

stuff I would say that this is more a hell of

a lot more worthy than Lord of the Rings in some

senses I know I'm gonna get bashed for that because

More geeks gravitate towards Lord of the Rings.

I think that this combines some of the old -worldly

stuff along with some interesting acting styles

as well as plotline Lord of the Rings it to me

It's just way too fucking long. I've seen them

so many times because my wife every now and again

will watch it, which we never actually get through

the movie. We usually end up having to turn it

off because she passes out. But that's besides

the fact. Yeah, let's not get on a Lord of the

Rings kick here. Let's stick with Pirates. Yeah,

so I would say Pirates definitely, if you're

not going to watch Lord of the Rings or anything,

I would say to at least give the first film of

this a try. But yeah, it's definitely. More worth

in my opinion. There's only really two other

movies in May that we're gonna talk about which

one of them is the hangover part two Yes, I never

saw the first one. So I probably won't see this

one This is just one of those ones that I saw

the trailers. It's another drunken You know movie

to me. It isn't really anything as far as that.

I would really enjoy if I can if If a movie is

supposed to be a comedy and I don't laugh once

during the trailer or during a preview or anything

like that, then I probably won't ever see it.

Now, this one looks to be different than the

first one, obviously, because they're not in

Vegas. They're in Bangkok. But I saw the first

one, which it was at the drive -in whatever year

it came out. And they had Funny People, Adam

Sandler's movie. We went to see that. The Hangover

Part 1 was much better than Funny People, because

Funny People was written by the guy that does

Forgetting Sarah Marshall and 40 -Year -Old Virgin.

And it just wasn't a good Adam Sandler flick.

So I actually liked the Hangover more, as did

my wife. So I'm voting that the second Hangover

will be much better in some regards. And it will

be pretty much the same as the first one. I probably

will see this if it's in the drive -in with something

else that I want to see. If not, I'll probably

wait till DVD. Yes. And the final film, which

I don't think either of us are going to see.

I don't even know if either of us. I know I haven't

seen the first one, but I don't know about you.

I have. Kung Fu Panda 2. Yeah, I don't care.

I know that it's got the same cast. It's pretty

much the same type of story. The first film I

think should have just been left there, but since

Shrek is done, it pretty much has to have another

flagship. So that is Kung Fu Panda, which they're

going to have five films. Plus the TV series,

eventually. Talk about running something into

the ground. Literally. Moving on to June, as

we kick off the summer of blockbusters, I think

the first one, and the most obvious one, X -Men

First Class. Now, I actually had hoped that there

was rumors before the filming had started that

there was rumors of a, if you don't film by this

date, the rights to X -Men revert from Fox to

Marvel. I was actually hoping that... the rights

would revert because I would want to see what

Marvel would do with their own property like

with what they're doing with all their other

films. However, when I saw the trailer for this,

I thought it was for a quote unquote prequel

film or a film to start a new trilogy or whatever

that they're going to do with the X -Men franchise

now, I thought it was extremely well done from

what I saw. I can't complain about any of the

actors that they've chosen. I still wish that

Jean -Luc Picard was was professor Xavier, but

I mean I know that they're going for a younger

feel here and It just it looks amazing for me.

It's probably gonna be a red box rental because

I just X -Men movies for me like I don't even

think I think I saw x -men 1 and x -men 2 in

theaters. I don't think I Even I don't remember

going to see x3 and in theaters and I know I

didn't see Wolverine in theaters. So It looks

really really amazing, but for me it's probably

just gonna be a red box rental Yeah, I'm I'm

interested to see it I did like X -Men origins

Wolverine despite the fact that it had a bunch

of issues And I am looking forward to the second

one as well as this but I Just I don't know it's

I think more so it's rubbing me the wrong way

and the sense that they're changing too much

the appearance like these people don't even some

of them don't even resemble their future versions

and Like they could have picked a little bit

better people, you know at least for Xavier.

There's the guy that played his clone in Star

Trek nemesis and I think he would have been a

better Picard but that's besides the fact I'm

not getting into that here but it looks like

it's gonna be good it's not one of the ones I'm

gonna see in theater just because I I more so

gravitate towards certain movies that I go with

my wife and then it this is not one that I would

be saying it's just it not that it's gonna be

bad I just I prefer to See other movies that

are coming out this year, and this is not what

I mean We're not saying that x -men first class

is gonna be bad in any way and you know we should

also mention that Josh Schwartz is one of the

screenwriters It's directed by Matthew Vaughn

which at first I thought it was being directed

by Bryan Singer at first but You know I think

one of the reasons and I'm not sure how presence

How much of a presence this certain actor is

gonna have in this film because I don't know

what character he plays at this point in time,

but One thing that really pissed me off about

casting news for X -Men first -class that is

now tied to the six degrees of Kevin fucking

bacon. Oh Kevin Bacon's and everything. Yeah,

except transformers. Thank God. Yeah, he better

not show up in transformers. Let's show up in

the reboot It would be Simmons. So moving on,

have you heard anything about Super 8? I've heard

a lot about Super 8 from people. And apparently,

it's J .J. Abrams' next film. I've heard a lot

about it, except for the fact that, well, I mean,

I've heard enough about it. But honestly, there's

nothing about this movie that interests me. I

know I'm going to catch flak for that. But it's

an action horror thriller. Nobody in it that

I know, which is kind of like that other movie

Cloverfield that he did. And it's supposed to

be in the summer of 1979, a bunch of friends

witness some crazy train crash and learn that

it's something else, probably aliens. And I just,

it's fitting that Spielberg's a part of it because

of course it's you know, something odd. And so

Spielberg gravitates towards sci -fi for the

most part. But I just, this is not a movie that

I care for at all. This will most definitely

be a DVD for me. But even then, I kind of like,

it's one of those movies where everybody's gravitating

towards it this year, kind of like Avatar. And

I just don't care because of that. Yeah. And

this is one that isn't even really on my radar.

I had only heard about who was doing it. Again,

not to keep plugging them, but I had listened

to one of the action rooms episodes recently

and they had mentioned it there and they had

mentioned that it was, you know, J .J. Abrams

directing and he's basically trying to mimic

Steven Spielberg's style and this, that, and

the other thing. It's probably something I won't

see, not because I don't like it, just because

It's not high on my radar right now. There's

only two other ones I want to talk about. I don't

know about you, but the only other two that I

want to talk about. One is Van Wilder as Green

Lantern. I'm sorry. I will always say that I

don't care what people say to me about Oh don't

compare it to that. I don't care. It's fucking

Van Wilder as Green Lantern I saw the trailer

for Green Lantern and it's Ryan Reynolds Even

as hell Jordan. I mean, you know He's he's nothing

but his Van Wilder character of being funny obnoxious

and too over the damn top Yes, I know you know

that Hal Jordan is this you know pilot who has

a snarky sense of humor and goes You know too

far over the top as far as that goes, but I mean

Ryan Reynolds just He hasn't done enough serious

acting roles for me To warrant Me not typecasting

him as Van Wilder because half of his comedy

schtick is the Van Wilder type character and

Nothing about this film has me interested whatsoever

to see it. I On the other hand I'm going to see

it. This is one that I already told my wife.

I'm seeing in the theater. I don't care This

to me would probably be second to Batman Just

because and I know that it's you compared to

you know Van Wilder I don't compare the movie

to Van Wilder. Let me clarify. I don't compare

the movie to Van Wilder. I compare the way Reynolds

is playing the character of Hal Jordan slash

Green Lantern to Van Wilder. Well, despite that

fact, I still see Ryan Reynolds, despite anything

I see him in, as Van Wilder, just because that's

the first film I saw him in. But besides that,

I I'm interested to see what he does with the

movie. I'm interested to see the movie in general.

I'm pretty sure it's gonna be along the same

lines as like the first flight animated movie.

Just because that's the only really logical choice

they could do for a first film. But it's one

of those ones that I feel is gonna be more important

this year. out of them all right but I guess

we move on to the next film which is Cars 2 this

is pretty much the only one left in June and

hell yes I cannot wait to see this I'm so going

to theaters to see this movie I'm not seeing

it in the theater but that's more so because

of personal preference it's I'm I like the films

but I am going to wait until DVD for this for

sure now see This is where I can since we're

talking about cars, too This is where I can kind

of defend myself on my love of the cars franchise

at first Like every year that Pixar came out

with a film besides the Toy Story franchise Was

really skeptical about every year's film that

they any year every single year that that company

has been in business Outside of the Toy Story

franchise. I was super skeptical about every

film cars the original movie cars was something

I Never wanted to see when it initially came

out didn't care about it didn't know anything

about it And this was back in 2006 this is before

I started podcasting. I just I didn't really

You know, it was one of those things that I really

didn't care for it. And I eventually did see

it. And I absolutely fell in love with it. And

one of the reasons why I'm also in love with

the Cars franchise is because of Cars Toon's

Mater's Tall Tales, which is another discussion

from another day. But this is a franchise that

appeals to kids. This is a franchise that is

fun loving. You know, it's one of Pixar's best

films. It ranks in their best films for me. And

just having like, you know, the first film they

were in, Radiator Springs, and it was the story

of Lightning McQueen and how he had to, you know,

do the whole redemption thing. Now it's him and

Mater going, you know, across the world for the

Grand Prix. You know super spy stuff and more

Mater stuff and because of and they're not ignoring

this but because of that They've done the Mater's

tall tale cartoon shorts they don't ignore that

in this film because they go to Tokyo they go

to all these different places and This is something.

I'm so definitely going to see in the theaters

because I love this franchise Yeah, it's it's

not a bad franchise I'll admit that and it's

nice because Unlike Disney, when Pixar does a

sequel, they keep the original cast. Well, with

a few exceptions, because a couple of people

have passed away since. Paul Newman passed away,

and he was the voice of Doc Hudson. Which they

probably have Michael Cain playing this time.

since he's in the film. But anyways, yeah. So

that's pretty much all the good movies for June,

so I guess we'll move on to July, starting with

Transformers Dark of the Moon. This movie has

me all kinds of worried. I don't even know where

to start with this, because we already really,

I mean, we talk up Transformers stuff to death,

overrun all things Transformers, and... I don't

know, continue your thought about it, has you

worried? I'm gonna keep this short and sweet

just because I wanna get on to other films, but

it's keeping Shia LaBeouf, Josh Dumal, Tyrese

Gibson, Kevin Dunn, Julie White, and it's adding

a bunch of new characters, or new actors and

characters, and then they, instead of Megan Fox,

they got Rosie Huntingling. Rosie Huntingling

and Whiteley. Yes. That's a mouthful. There we

go. She looks as stick figure -ish and boring

as Megan Fox did in the first film. Megan Fox

started coming into it by the second film. Everything

I've seen her in has the same she's posing for

underwear look. Well, she is a Victoria's Secret

model, so. Yeah, well, they should have chosen

actress, but that's besides the fact. And then

they've got John Turturro, which is probably

going to be the only saving grace for the film.

I disagree with that. I love John Turturro, but

I hate that character. Oh, no, I hate the character.

But I'm saying that's going to be the only good

part, because it's going to have some memorable

line by him, like the previous film, One Man.

Defending his country that he loves or whatever,

you know, just I don't know. It was just goofy,

but it's I think it'll be good overall just because

they're introducing new robots I think what they're

doing to Megatron is gonna be ass, but It should

be alright, but I'm waiting to see how this plays

out considering the second will be blue Well,

you know, there's a few things and we've talked

about this before again over on all things transformers

there's no writer's strike going on now so it

has to be significantly better than the writing

from revenge of the fallen whether it's the best

movie ever no i'm not going to say that because

as we all know though the entire franchise has

been kind of tainted you know to to paraphrase

michael wilson michael bay has written my childhood

like star scream rapes metal bugs but anyway

um For me, I've never minded Josh Duhamel and

Tyrese Gibson in the roles that they're in in

these films because they're so secondary. I mean,

you see them like maybe 5, 10, 15 minutes out

of the movie as far as like where they're actually

like in Revenge of the Fallen, you saw them in

the... in the hangar scene. Other than that,

they're in action scenes where they're doing

their army stuff and they're doing their military

stuff to prevent the Decepticons and the bad

robots from taking over the world or whatever.

I mean, it isn't something where you have those

two characters in the limelight like you have

Shia LeBitch. I don't really care for him all

that much, but... He's doing all right with what

he's got, so I guess that's fine. Yes. Moving

on. Yes, moving on before we get on a whole other

tirade here. Winnie the Pooh would, well, I guess

we can go back up to Harry Potter and the Deathly

Hollows part two. I don't care. I'm so sick of

this franchise. I can't wait till it fucking

ends. I wasn't even going to bring it up. OK,

well, moving on then. I have a different film,

Zookeeper. OK, Zookeeper. What the hell is Zookeeper?

Let me click on this. It has Kevin James as the

starring role. And then he's the zookeeper. He

goes back in. Well, there's a bunch of people

playing the voices of these animals in the zoo,

being Adam Sandler, Sylvester Stallone. It's

another Happy Madison production. Is this basically

like Stillers' Night at the Museum type of thing?

Basically, it'll be along those lines. But the

animals can talk and he hears them. It's an interesting

movie to say the least. I think it'll be pretty

good. This more than likely I'll end up seeing

in theater. Yes, but it looks pretty good and

I think that's all I'm gonna say about it So

we need a poo we need a poo Looks like they changed

a bunch of voice actors I mean, I know some of

them haven't done the originals are probably

either gone or they haven't done the voice in

so long But yeah, they've got just on what coming

soon net has they've got Jim Cummings Craig Ferguson

Tom Kenny Travis Oates and Bud Lucky listed Which

I have no idea who's doing what voice but yeah

It'll be interesting to see what I'm sure once

the film comes out behind the voice actors comm

will have The voice actors and all that stuff.

Well, they'll have a complete breakdown. Yeah

But yes, that's that's one that I probably won't

watch but that's more so for the fact that I'm

older and I Mean because it's Disney and it's

a new Disney animated film I'll probably see

it, but it's probably, again, like I've said

majority for most of my films that I might see,

it's probably a red box rental. It's not something

I would see in theaters. Well, this would be

a Netflix for me as well. So we'll jump over

to Captain America, the first Avenger. Yes. What

do you think about this? First of all, no district,

like, OK, let's see. Because when I first heard

news of this and when I first heard the news

of who was going to be playing Captain America,

I'm like, wait, how the hell can you do that,

Marvel? How the hell can you take Johnny Storm

and make him Captain America? What the hell?

But I think that Chris Evans can probably fit

into the Steve Rogers role. Really what's got

me excited for this film is how badass they made

Hugo Weaving look as Red Skull. Oh, yeah. I mean,

that's like perfect casting. Like, Hugo weaving

his Megatron, that's nothing compared to this.

I mean, that's just a voice that Hugo does for

the Transformers franchise films. But this guy,

he looks like, I mean, no offense. And I mean,

no offense to the people that created the thing,

but it looks like Agent Smith as the Red Skull,

for Christ's sake. It's awesome. Yes. Yeah, this

is probably one of those ones where I will probably

have to see it in theaters I will More than likely

try to see it in theater whether I do or not.

It's a different story. But this movie does look

definitely badass and It's got tieovers to Iron

Man with yeah. Well, that's Marvel's whole stick

now They want to create all this carton cartoon

continuity movie continuity, but and they're

gonna have Howard Stark in it and basically helping

with the whole Avenger project and the armor

and probably the serum I'm betting and then the

shield. I'm sure he'll have a bigger part in

it. How the fuck Sam, or not Sam, Nick Fury,

I'm saying Samuel L. Jackson, but how the hell

he's gonna be in it and still be young is beyond

me. Boy. Uh, who are you talking about? Nick

Fury will be in this film. Who? Nick Fury. Oh,

um, Samuel L. Jackson. Um... Because he's knowing

Howard Stark and this is when Tony is a kid.

Hmm. If he's even my Paul. I don't know. I'm

not sure how they're going to do that, but I

mean, it's Sam Jackson. He can pull off any role

he does. I mean... I'll kill the motherfucking

snakes and the motherfucking plane Yeah, but

Captain America is so win for me I will probably

I will make my best attempts to catch it in theaters

Before we go into because really the only other

one which we're both probably gonna bash which

is that last one on July 29th I want to talk

about some of the one of the July's that are

TBA Thus sleeping beauty you have to be fucking

kidding me. Oh God At least it's not at least

it's not fucking Tim Burton directing the damn

thing But apparently they're doing a live -action

version of Sleeping Beauty And I've not heard

of any of the people that are even related to

it. I know Yeah, you know Skip. And again, it

says on here July TBA. So it doesn't have an

exact date. So let's go back to the Smurfs. Get

Smurfed. I'm sorry. I will not see this fucking

movie. I will probably see it in DVD. I will

not see this in theaters because it looks fucking

stupid. But they've got Neil Patrick Harris.

I think the one thing they got right from cartoon

to screen is how stalkerish and evil -looking

Gargamel looks because Hank Azaria plays him.

Hank Azaria can pretty much play any kind of

weird evil character. True. He kind of looks

like Moe. He does. Mo says lack from the Simpsons,

yeah. I think he does the voice for Mo, too.

I'd have to check on that. I think they're right,

yeah. But they've got Neil Patrick Harris playing

the human, and that somehow opens them up, and

then they're all there. Well, you have George

Lopez. You got Pee Wee Herman. You've got Kenan

Thompson from SNL. You've got Jeff Foxworthy.

You've got Katy Perry. Oh my god. And you've

got Alan coming in there. And Fred Armazan from

Saturday Night Live as well. But I mean, it's

a huge cast playing all these characters. But

there's going to be a lot of bathroom humor,

I can tell, just by who's involved. And if I

had kids, they would not be seeing this just

because. I mean, in the trailer, I've even seen

some shit that's kind of questionable. Yeah.

It's it's yeah, I I Think it'll be alright, but

I just I think they should have stopped with

Elvin and the chipmunks. They did a good job

with those films and They they hit the right

if they go back and do any of the other characters

kind of like this I mean, they've already botched

Yogi Bear. They've already they're gonna botch

the Smurfs They should just stop bringing back

80s goodness and destroying it. Yes, exactly.

Or 60s, or 70s, whatever. Anything previous,

they should stop. Yes. And finally, we are going

to round out this what are we looking forward

to summer 2011 movies with the August films.

There isn't much here. A lot of them I haven't

even seen trailers for. So where do we want to

start with this? Because really, there's only

two on here that I really don't want to spend

too much time on. I mean, maybe five minutes

each. But there really isn't anything here in

August so far that we've, I mean, because right

now it's only going into April. So I'm sure there's

going to be more listings added to this as we

go along. But right now. The only ones that I

really recognize spy kids for I thought this

fucking franchise was done already And then final

destination five, wait a second. I thought the

final destination was the last film in that franchise

It was supposed to be Oh God this this is I don't

know how it is says death makes a killing in

the next installment of the horror series Which

once again proves that no matter where you run

no matter where you hide you can't shoot death

Yeah, this is the same plot. They've been doing

for the last four films fucking let it die yeah

really I mean seriously people it's like this

movie is it's it they botched like the first

three were alright but in the third film was

getting more hokey as it got along and then the

fourth film was just utter crap I only ever saw

it was in 3D it had people I barely knew this

next film has nobody I'm gonna even know I only

ever saw the very first film If you see the first

two and even if you see the third one don't watch

past that. Well, I You know, I hate film franchises

like this They're like, oh, you know, you're

gonna you know, everybody's gonna die sometime,

which is true. Everyone will die sometime but

It's got you into this whole thing of, oh, let's

figure out when I'm going to die and how I'm

going to die and blah, blah, blah. There's an

application. And what order am I going to die?

Yeah. There's an application on Facebook called

Death Clock. And if you enter your birth date,

year, month, and. It's so old, too. I did that

back in high school. And every now and again,

I do it. And I die supposedly in the 2070s. I

mean, some of it is funny. Some of the reasons

ways to die are funny, but. I mean, seriously,

why would you want to promote a movie that promotes

death? I mean, really? Well, they did have Saw.

Well, yeah, but that's a whole other can of worms

that I don't ever want to get into. And I, you

know, I don't know about you, but as far as I'm

concerned, M .Wire will never cover those fucking

movies. I will eventually cover Saw. And I will

eventually cover Final Destination. Final Destination,

I'm fine with. I can cover the first one, but

I will never cover Saw. Never. That's fine. I'll

get somebody else. But that's besides the fact.

I will probably do that as a Halloween highlight,

not a regular episode. But yeah, other than that,

the only movies that I see that are memorable

for this month is there's Rise of the Apes. which

is, you know, a new take on... Planet of the

Apes? Yeah. Well, it's a new take on the Rise

of the Apes. There was the original story from

the 70s and 80s or whatever. Planet of the Apes

is the first one. Rise of the Apes is, like,

the next one. Oh, okay. So it's a sequel, kind

of. Basically, but it's got a few different people

on it. It's, like, James Franco is the lead in

this one. A lot of fucking movies this year so

far well, and he pretty much took off since spider

-man and Other than that I mean this movie looks

like it'll be interesting as well Definitely

a DVD rental But that's more so because I'm not

a fan of the apes movies as much as I used to

be Yeah, other than that there's there's only

a couple other ones like I said Conan the barbarian

looks interesting to see what they do with this

since Arnold did the original I Just I want to

see how much better they can do it than the first

despite the fact I've seen very little of the

first the governor the governor I would kill

you with my nine millimeter bullets But yeah,

then there's the change -up with Ryan Reynolds

Jason Bateman Alan Arkin, Leslie Mann, and Olivia

Wilde. I have no idea what this movie is about,

honestly, because the title caught me. It says,

Reynolds and Bateman were inseparable best friends,

and they've slowly drifted apart, and blah, blah,

blah. The only thing I can think of is ... Yeah,

so they wake up ... with their worlds turned

upside down after a drunken binge out together

and they wake up in each other's bodies and proceed

to freak the fuck out. That will be funny. Yeah,

I don't know. Again, because it's so far out

at this point, that's August, and I know that

we're covering up to then for now because of

summer stuff, but... Until I see a trailer for

something. I'm gonna reserve judge runoff on

a film like that. It sounds okay, you know, but

It's one of those things where I'm gonna have

to wait and see a trailer on Well, yeah, I'll

wait and see a trailer too. But more than likely

I'll probably see that in theater I'm like spy

kids for which I mean, I thought they would have

killed this but they're bringing back some of

the old cast and Tony of Ender is Alexa Vega

you know, some of the other people. Then they've

got Jeremy Piven in this, then they've got Jessica

Alba. So I'm just like, huh? Not a movie I'll

see ever, but still, huh? I think I've only,

and this is only because they were on TV, so

don't, no one come after me for this. The only

spy kids franchise movies I've ever seen. We're

the first and the third one and I only saw them

because they were on TV Yeah, I've seen bits

and pieces but that's only because I Don't know

just flipping channels. Yeah But yeah, I'm not

seeing anything related to this Yeah, so I guess

we will close this crap pile out We will be back

sooner than episode 80. 81. Yes, 81, my bad.

80 was already done. Yes. We will be back with

a special episode with Tron and Tron Legacy.

Featuring the guest hosting styles of Optibotamus.

Yes, and the only problem is, how do we get our

hands on Tron if we don't have a VHS? Guess what?

I actually just figured that I didn't figure

this out, but I actually searched this out. We

get our hands on Tron by going to iTunes. And

along with the Tron Legacy release coming up

this month on April 5th, they are re -releasing

Tron, the classic. You can either buy, I believe

there's a DVD two pack that's Tron Legacy and

Tron Classic. Oh, OK. Or you can get it from

iTunes. It's one of those franchises where they

have this new movie so that you know that they're

going to re -release the original. So I think

I'm going to get mine from iTunes. If anybody

wants to get me an iTunes gift card so I can

get that, that'd be great. But anyway, just sign

there. I'm likely going to if there is a two

-pack with the first film I'll probably buy that

just so that I can get both because I don't have

the first film and I saw it such a long time

ago that I don't really remember it Yeah, the

it says that it will be re -released on With

the Tron legacy, so that is cool. It's special

edition DVD and first time on Blu -ray in April.

So I will be getting this two -pack just because

I want to see both films again so that I can

see the second film and so that I can be prepared

for the third film. Yes. The only thing with

the Tron, well, that's Blu -ray. I've looked

it up right now. I'm trying to see here. Let's

see. See that that's gonna suck you know for

DVD you really only have two options you have

if you want to get the original along with the

The the new film you have Tron legacy slash Tron

the original classic five disc combo blu -ray

3d blu -ray DVD digital copy According to this,

one new and used from $49 .99 on Amazon. That

is a two movie collection. Or you can get the

Tron Legacy super special edition that comes

with identity disc collectable packaging for

$68 .99 on Amazon. And that, again, as Steve

said, comes on April 5th. Yes. Rounding out this

episode, I have been Steve Megatron Phillips

and... TFG1 Mike! And we will see you next time

in the Tron and Tron Legacy episode. See you

next time, folks. Hi, I'm Phil Lamar, voice of

Green Lantern and Justice League, and you're

listening to the Geekcast Radio Network. In 2006,

two unlikely friends became the heroes of Radiator

Springs. But on their next big road trip, they're

not only racing across the world. Wish me luck.

You go get him, buddy. Welcome to the inaugural

running of the World Grand Prix. They're racing

to save the world. No one can stop us. British

intelligence. So, Mater, average intelligence.

Welcome to Tokyo International Airport. Listen,

this isn't Radiator Springs. These Americans

are clearly master spies. Oh, you've got to be

joking. Ten more, Mater. I'm on approach. Roger

that. There he is! He's getting away! Hang on!

Cars 2 Good job! So I see you've all met. What's

this all about though? Yeah, man. Why'd you drag

us halfway around the world? Because we got a

job. That's a stealth mission. We'll be in and

out before they even know we're there. We're

talking about breaking into a police station.

This is crazy. This is a hundred million dollars.

You say what? I'm down. Is all of this really

necessary to apprehend two men? One's a former

federal officer who spent five years in deep

cover. The other one's a professional criminal,

escaped prison twice. We find them, we take them

as a team, and we bring them back. And above

all else, we don't ever, ever let them get into

cars. We just went from the middle of the most

wanted list to the very top. You gotta keep running

now. Running ain't freedom. You're going down,

Toreto. Big mistake. This just went from mission

impossible to mission in freaking sanity. Bars

are buried in a ditch somewhere. for us as we

sail to the Fountain of Youth. You could guide

an expedition. You are Jack Sparrow. There should

be a captain in there somewhere. I hear a rumour.

Jack Sparrow's in London. Hell bent to find the

Fountain of Youth. Don't be a fool, Jackie. The

Fountain will test you. Was that really necessary?

Gentlemen. The Fountain is the prize. No main

orders. That could be our path. Steady as she

goes. What's your play, Jack? I thought I should

give you a warning. We're taking the ship. It's

nothing personal. You might have had her off.

You just... Stay out of it. There'll be dangers

along the way. Firstly, mermaids, zombies, black

bears, the pirate all -pirates fear. If I do

not make it to the fountain, neither will you.

Is that it? I think so. How is it we can never

meet without you pointing something at me? There's

the jack I know. Fire to the beret! You know

that feeling you get when you're standing in

a high place? Suddenly there's a jump. I don't

have it. Did everyone see that? Because I will

not be doing it. In a world there, I said it

happy
