About this Episode

Mike and Dan dive into Pierce Brosnan's debut as James Bond, exploring how GoldenEye brought 007 back after a six-year gap and ushered in the Brosnan era. They discuss the film's strong cast—including Sean Bean as the rogue 006—its action sequences, pacing, score, and how it successfully modernized the franchise while honoring its roots. The hosts also address the relationship between the film's popularity and the iconic N64 game that followed.

on the Bond film franchise, which is brought

.com. I am one of your hosts, T .O. Joe and Mike,

and joining me as always is movie revolt Dan.

Hello. Hello. How are you? I am well, how are

you? I'm doing very, very well. Especially now

that we are in my era. This is mine. Okay, I

will just listen to you and I will, you know...

You'll be the teacher and I will be the student

At least you're old enough to remember what popularity

there was to this besides the video game Unlike

some people. Okay. So today we're going to be

finding out if gold and I truly does exist Which

it does now before we get into this before we

send it over to JT with just the facts before

Dan and I even Tell you when the first time we

saw this was Recently over at this week in geek

net they did their own topic show All about the

history of bond just like Dana and I did with

GCR We do that two months a month and a half

ago two months ago something like that and I

went and I listened that Between David double

D Dennis and Scotty do 32 who are both 90s children.

I believe Dave is like 24, 25 years old. Scotty

is only 20 years old. I am 33. I was 15 when

Gold and I came out. Now after listening to this

this topic show from ThisWeekInGeek .net I went

on my Facebook page, my personal Facebook page

and my fan page and I wrote A little rant out,

but I'm actually going to read this here. Bond

thoughts. GoldenEye. You damn kids, get off my

lawn! I was 15 years old in 1995 and I understood

what Goldeneye the film did for the Bond franchise.

In 1995, everyone I talked to was excited for

this new era of Bond. Everyone who loved the

franchise and wanted to see this film is slash

was it overhyped? Hell no. In Goldeneye, is Goldeneye

the best Bond film ever? No, but it depends on

who you ask. Everyone has their favorites, and

the ones they can't stand. For me personally,

GoldenEye is top 5 if I ranked all 23 films.

The reason for this is that it got me into Bond.

Sure, I had seen some of the previous entries

as a kid, but none of them really grabbed me

until I was an adult, and I could look back and

appreciate them. The Brosnan era was high action,

great gadgets, and overall just badass. As Ritgar

in Transformers The Movie would say, Sleek, sexy,

and import with turbo handling. So there you

go, my general thoughts on GoldenEye. Oh, and

don't touch that, that's my lunch. Sorry, it

took me a second to get that last joke. Oh, come

on! It took you a second to get the last joke,

really? I'm still on the uptake. I'm getting

my mind to go into my old age. but yeah I'm sorry

anyone that thinks that the N64 game was the

sole reason that this movie was had the hype

that it had and still has the the the popularity

that it has you need to stop smoking weed seriously

whatever you're smoking just put it down because

You're fucking crazy. I mean, I would say there's

probably a good population, especially people

a little bit younger than me, that they probably

played the game long before they saw the movie,

which I could understand. I think maybe that's

what they're getting at. I haven't listened to

the episode, so I can't really chime in. But

sometimes, honestly, thinking back on it, I never.

until kind of going back this year and looking

at Bond history, I always assumed the game came

out around the same time. It wasn't until I realized,

oh, that came out two years afterward. I always

think, you know, those two years always got combined

in my mind, so. But yeah, I think GoldenEye stands

on its own without the game. I think the game

is great, but the film is great without it. Oh,

exactly. And I agree. I think that... Because

most of the time at least nowadays, okay, you

know, okay, you know I can reference most Animated

film games or most, you know, most movie games

in general. Iron Man, for example. When Iron

Man came out... Oh my god, Iron Man came out

four years ago. Holy crap. Iron Man came out

in 2008, and then they released the video game

based on it. I think it was from Activision.

I could be wrong about that. And most movie video

games suck nowadays. That's just a staple of

movie -based video games. They suck. With GoldenEye,

I think everyone thought at the time that it

came out at GoldenEye 007, the 97 game, for N64,

I think everyone thought it came out at the same

time as the film, which it didn't, obviously.

I even thought that. Because in 97 you had Tomorrow

Never Dies, and it's subsequent games and everything

else. I never played GoldenEye 007. It wasn't

because of lack of wanting to, it's because the

N64 is the fucking devil with their controller.

That controller is just, it's not made for someone

like me who plays video games with just one hand.

As far as the size and the shape of the controller,

it's like, no. As the movie begins, we see a

man in black bungee jump off the top of a dam

in pre -collapse Soviet Russia. The man, who

turns out to be Secret Agent James Bond, is sneaking

into a top secret chemical weapons factory located

underneath the dam. After disabling a Sylvia

trooper in the men's room when he sneaks through

an air duct, Bond meets up with his partner,

Alec Trevely, in Agent 006. Together, they make

their way to the main storage room, and Bond

begins planting explosives while Trevelyan holds

off the Russians. But suddenly, it all goes quiet,

and Bond peeks out to see the leader of the base,

General Oremov, has 006 on his knees at gunpoint.

When Trevelyan yells for Bond to finish the job,

he is shot at point blank range. After seeing

his friend and fellow agent die, Bond escapes,

and the Russians give chase. 007 tries to steal

a small plane, but he is pulled from it by the

pilot, and then he steals a motorbike and chases

after the plane which falls off the cliff top.

runway. Bond goes over the edge too, barely able

to get on board and gain control of the plane

before it crashes. Bond flies away just as his

bombs explode and level the weapons factory.

Nine years go by and we find Bond in Monte Carlo

driving recklessly on the roads around the city

and at the same time terrifying Caroline, a government

psychologist who's been sent to give him an evaluation.

007 starts racing with an attractive brunette

and a Ferrari down the roads, almost colliding

with a bunch of cyclists. And after Bond almost

runs the brunette off the road, Caroline shouts

for him to pull over, which he does. He also

pulls out a bottle of Bollinger and proceeds

to seduce the hell out of a shrink. That evening,

Bond gets to a local casino and sees the Ferrari

from earlier. Inside, he finds a driver, a woman

named Zenya Anata playing Baccarat. Bond tries

to question her when she leaves, but she is whisked

away by her date, Canadian Admiral Chuck Farrell.

Bond follows covertly and sees them board the

Manticore, a luxury yacht moored in the harbour.

Bond sends pictures back to Moneypenny, who ID's

Xenia as a former Soviet fighter pilot who now

has ties to the genus Crime Syndicate. On board

the ship, Xenia kills the Admiral during sex

by crushing him between her thighs, while a man

in the shadows takes Farrell's ID card. The next

morning, Bonne sneaks on board the manticore

and discovers Admiral Farrell's body. Meanwhile,

Xenia and the mystery man use the credentials

to access the tiger, a helicopter built to handle

electromagnetic pulses. Bonne rushes to the demonstration

but is waylaid by security, allowing Xenia and

her mystery friend to steal the chopper. A couple

of days later, at the Space Weapons Control Centre

in Severnaya, Siberia, the routine of two programmers,

Natalia Simonova and Boris Vashenko, is interrupted

by the arrival of Zina and General Oromov, who

now has Russia's space division. The journal

claims he is there to inspect the GoldenEye satellite

weapon system and gets the base commander to

unlock the firing keys and the control core.

However, once Orimov has him in his hands, Zenya

fires on the programmers killing everyone inside

but Natalia and Boris. The two then set the Goldeneye

satellite to fire on the installation to cover

their tracks, with Orimov and Zenya escaping

with a stolen Tiger helicopter as Natalia looks

over the bodies of her friends and co -workers.

Back in London, Bob meets with his boss, the

new female M, who doesn't believe that Goldeneye

exists, but as they watch Russian mags fly to

check out the installation at Severnaya, the

Goldeneye fires an EMP pulse, blinding the British

satellite as well as destroying the base's massive

satellite dish. And when another satellite is

brought to bear, Bond and M see the destruction

GoldenEye can cause. M then orders 007, who reasons

that the Janus Syndicate is behind the Chomper's

theft and the attack, to track down the Kremogor's

leader and recover the GoldenEye components.

Bond also sees Q before he goes, receiving a

trick watch, a pen grenade, and a BMW Z3 Roadster,

which isn't really used at all in this movie.

Back in Russia, Oromov is attending a security

meeting led by Defense Minister Mishkin. Oromov

briefs Mishkin that the attack was caused by

separatists seeking to destabilize the government,

but there is no danger of another attack. However,

when Defense Minister Mishkin informs that two

people survived the attack, Oromov is shocked

as he believed that Boris was the only one who

got out. Bon soon arrives in St. Petersburg and

meets with Jack Wade, his new CIA contact. Wade

briefs 007 on Janus' crime syndicate, mentioning

the leader travels around in an old Sylviet missile

train. Deciding to follow the idea of the enemy

of my enemy is my friend, Bond goes to meet with

former KGB agent turned criminal entrepreneur

Vladimir Zakovsky, a man Bond has dealt with

before. Despite Vladimir getting the drop on

him, Bond manages to finesse his way out of getting

shot by offering to set up one of Zakovsky's

rivals if he can get him a meeting with Janus.

During this time, Natalia also arrives in St.

Petersburg searching for answers. She uses the

internet at a computer store to contact Boris,

who we find is now working for the Janus organization.

He arranges to meet with Natalia at a local church,

but when she shows up, Xenia takes her hostage.

Later that night, Bond is approached by Xenia

in his hotel's pool area and drops an awesome

one -liner. He doesn't need the gun. That depends

on your definition of safe sex. Xenia then tries

to seduce and kill 007 all at the same time,

but Bond avoids her thighs of doom and forces

her at gunpoint to take him to Janus. Xenia leads

Bond to a graveyard of fallen Russian icons to

meet with Janus, but when the mysterious criminal

finally shows himself, it's none other than Alec

Trevelyan. Trevelyan tells his son Bond how and

why he became a cry boss, which involves his

parents' murder by Stalin's forces when he was

a child. Mond is then taken out by a drug -tipped

dart and loaded into the Tiger helicopter with

Natalia, who eventually wakes him up with her

screaming. Literally using his head, Bond activates

the eject button and the two are sent flying

up into the sky as the missiles impact and destroy

the Tiger. However, their respite is short -lived

as they are soon arrested by the Russian military.

After being taken to Russian military headquarters,

Bond and Natalia are questioned by Minister Mishkin,

where Natalia reveals that there is another Goldeneye

satellite. Oromov then barges in, protesting

to Mishkin, but his boss shuts him down. Oromov

responds by assassinating Mishkin with Bond's

gun, intending to frame the secret agent. Bond

and Natalia then force their way past Oromov

and make a run for it, with Natalia being captured

before they can escape. Bond then chases after

her and Oromov with a freaking tank! Orimov takes

Natalia to Trevelyan's train, where the former

00 tries to seduce Natalia before he is interrupted

when Bonn sets his tank directly in the train's

path. Bonn destroys the engine car with the tank's

main gun, causing the train to derail inside

a tunnel, and Bonn boards the train, holding

Trevelyan and Xenia hostage. Bonn attempts to

convince Orimov that Trevelyan will betray him

right before he shoots and kills Orimov, which

allows Trevelyan and Xenia to escape. Trevelyan

then activates a self -destruct and traps Bonn

and Natalia inside. as Bond uses his watch laser

to cut a hole through the floor. Natalia uses

a computer to trace the location of the Janus

Syndicate's main base. 007 and Natalia then just

barely make it out of the train before it explodes.

Traveling to Cuba, Bond meets with Jack Wade

again, who informs 007 that there are no dishes

large enough to communicate with the satellite

locally. The next day, Bond and Natalia fly over

the island in a rented plane searching for the

Janus HQ when they are shot down near a large

lake. Both survive, but are knocked unconscious

for a time. And as Bond is coming to, Xenia arrives

in a chopper and rappels down. She grabs Bond

between her thunder thighs and tries to kill

him again, but he manages to get her machine

gun and fires on the chopper. Bond hits the pilot,

which causes the chopper to crash and drags Xenia

up into a tree, crushing her against it, and

allowing Bond to drop another piffy line. Inside

the hidden base, Trevillion has Boris activate

the satellite dish, which is actually submerged

beneath the lake's surface. Bond and Natalia

watch as the dish rises and locks onto the Golden

Eye satellite. They are discovered and fired

on by guards, which causes them to both fall

down into the giant dish, but Bond manages to

stop their slide and they sneak into the base.

Bond goes to plant explosives, while Natalia

changes the access codes to the satellite. Bond

even allows himself to be captured to give Natalia

more time, and Bond gets Trevelyan monologuing

about his plan, which involves Boris hacking

into dozens of England's banks and transferring

the money out to Janus accounts. Trevelyan feels

this is apropos because of how he thinks the

British government was involved in his parents'

death. Natalia is discovered and then brought

before Trevelyan and Boris, who is discovered

or hacking, which has also locked him out of

the system. Boris desperately tries to unlock

the system while relentlessly clicking Bond's

grenade pen. He inadvertently activates it, and

Bond tosses it near one of his bombs, which is

also attached to some fuel tanks, and the resulting

explosion decimates the base. Bond then races

to destroy the dish transmitter before Boris

breaks Natalia's codes. Bond and Trevalian then

engage in a running gun battle, as Bond makes

his way up a suspension bridge towards the transmitter

machine room, as Boris cracks the code and begins

to reposition the dish. Bond jams the inner workings

of the dish, and then begins to fight Trevalian

hand -to -hand, their fight kicking them down

to the underside of the transmitter, where Travellian

tries to knock Bond off as his helicopter draws

near. However, Natalia has commandeered the chopper,

and the momentary distraction allows Bond to

knock Travellian off the dish, who then falls

to the bottom of the fake lake bed. Bond then

leaps onto the chopper, and they move away just

before the dish explodes due to Bond's tampering.

The dish falls down onto a barely alive Trevelyan

and into the base, Boris miraculously surviving

all this. But his seeming invincibility is disproved

when he's frozen to death in liquid nitrogen.

Yes! I am invincible! Bond and Natalia soon abandon

the chopper are getting kind of frisky in the

jungle when Wayne shows up with some Marines

and the film ends as everyone is airlifted to

safety. After a six -year hiatus, James Bond

returned to the silver screen in GoldenEye on

November 13, 1995 to very favorable reviews.

Roger Ebert actually gave the new Bond film three

out of four stars, saying Brosnan's performance

as 007 was more vulnerable and more psychologically

complete than previous incarnations. James Bernadelli

of RealReviews .net says that despite a portion

of the moving being padding, loved Brosnan's

Bond as he had a flair for wit to go with his

natural charm. But not all was gold for GoldenEye

as some critics were not fans. Critic for Entertainment

Weekly Owen Gleiberman wrote that he thought

GoldenEye was proof that the franchise was in

a terminal state of exhaustion, and Kenneth Turan

of the LA Times said the film was an anxious

mess trying to be trendy. Despite this, the film

is still so popular with critics and fans alike

that it holds an 82 % fresh rating on RottenTomatoes

.com. The film was directed by Martin Campbell,

who returned in 2006 to direct the reboot of

the franchise in Casino Royale. The film also

starred TV's Remington Steel Pierce Brosnan in

his first of four turns as 007. The film also

starred Sean Bean as Alex Trevelyan, Dame Judi

Dench as the new M, Isabella Skorupko as Bond

girl Natalia, and future X -Men Famke Jensen

and Alan Cumming as Zenia Onatop and Boris Grishenko.

Jordan Baker actually returned as well to the

series after a one -movie hiatus to play Bond's

new CIA pal, Jack Waid. Now you might be wondering

about the 6 year gap between films. This was

a result of a legal pissing match over the ownership

of the James Bond character and the somewhat

disappointing financial return on license to

kill. And this was not the only time Pierce Brosnan

was approached to play the world's most secret

agent, as he was looked to play Bond in the Living

Daylights and License to Kill, but had to bow

out due to his commitment to the Remington Steel.

However, Brosnan was not the only guy Hollywood

looked at to play the new Bond. Producers also

looked at a Jedi Master and Captain Martin Riggs

to play Bond. That's right people, Liam Neeson

and Mel Gibson almost got to play Secret Agent.

Tina Turner provided the film's theme song, appropriate

titled GoldenEye, which was written by U2's Bono

and The Edge. And the film also generated a hugely

popular tie -in video game for the N64, as well

as the alternate timeline spin -off video game

GoldenEye Rogue Agent. GoldenEye is in my top

5 favorite Bond films of all time, and that should

say something. I have to say Brosnan is my favorite

Bond as he mixes equal parts of Connery badass

and Roger Moore swagger. The film itself was

a great reintroduction to the franchise for old

and new fans, as well as bringing James Bond

fully into the modern day. And it brought back

great hench people in the form of Zinnia and

Boris. This has been Just the Facts for Goldeneye.

This is JT from Saskatoon saying, later. Aren't

we all? You're late, 007. I had to stop in the

bathroom. Ready to save the world again? After

you, 006. Fire! Closing time, James! No score!

Buy me a pint! if it seems like james and the

other half thank you so much j t for all of the

uh... just the facts for goldeneye and breaking

down the plot synopsis uh... did you see this

one theaters in ninety -five or are you too young

at that point i don't know no i i i did not actually

I think I mentioned this in the GCR episode,

but I played the game. That was my first real

experience. I saw some Bond films before that,

but I think it's when my interest really started

peaking with the Bond franchises, with the game.

So I think I actually saw Tomorrow Never Dies

before I saw Goldeneye, but I never caught it

in the theater. I think I said in the GCR episode,

However long GoldenEye stayed in theaters, I

saw it at least 10, maybe 15 times in the theater.

I went every weekend that this movie was still

open, you know, even when it went to like a dollar,

you know, the dollar theater type of, you know,

back in those days when there still were such

things as dollar theaters, because nowadays,

at least here in Louisville, Kentucky, dollar

theaters now are like three dollars four dollars

you know it's not you know back in nineteen ninety

five you could go to some uh... we have a local

here called village eight uh... and they would

generally show films that are maybe three four

years older than what's currently out uh... we

could go there for matinee and pay a dollar fifty

to see a movie it's kinda like in my day when

i was a young and i remember this etc etc etc

um you know i feel all old and crotchety right

now holy crap uh so um you know i remember that

you know i remember doing that and uh yes i know

um uh you know so that That's one thing about

this film is that I saw it so many times it was

like That to me was like that was bond that was

that was my bond that was You know that was my

full -on first ever like experience where I actually

understood What was going on? You know and I

got it, and I've always been this type of person

that I know the difference between reality and

fiction. Anything that happens in media is fiction.

It's make -believe. You know what I mean? It's

kind of like going back to that thing of, oh,

video games are too violent. Video games are

causing kids to go out and murder people. No,

that's not. You raise your kid right, that's

not going to happen. You know what I mean? Yeah.

You know, it's one of those things. And I've

always considered myself to be Ahead of my time

as far as like I would always I when I was younger

I always hung out with the adults I never I wasn't

one of those kids that wanted to hang out with

the other kids, you know It's kind of like do

I really have to be stuck at the kid table because

I always felt I always felt this way whether

it's true or not I don't know and I know a lot

of people on GCR and other places online that

I know will debate this but I always felt that

I was Mature beyond my years as a child You know

what I mean? You're the kid at Chuck E. Cheese

for yelling at everyone to quiet down, basically.

Yeah. Yeah, I want to shoot that mouse in the

head. Chuck E. Cheese, yeah. But no, I loved,

like, the very first, I remember the very first

time I saw this in theaters and it was so awesome.

It just was. It was so awesome. So great. Yeah,

with that six year hiatus, I think this kind

of brought bond back for a huge generation of

people. Timothy Dalton era, well, I think you

and I both really enjoy it. I think for a lot

of people, they looked at work had. mixed feelings

about those films. And I think License of Kill

didn't do that great at the box office. So with

that in mind and that six year period, I think

this kind of really brought Bond back to the

forefront long before the video game and kind

of reminded people of why Bond is such an iconic

character. Yeah. Now I know those of you who

have already listened to our on Her Majesty's

stupid service uh... review i said that in there

an australian actor trying to do a really poor

british accent was just no good brosnan pierce

brosnan is is irish but he pulls off a really

cool british accent though I understand why a

lot of people think he is their best bond. I

mean, there's a huge amount of people that consider

him beyond Sean Connery. And it's not just, you

know, general fans, it's a lot of hardcore bond

fans. But yeah, he will get into that. But I

can understand why, because there's he kind of

has a lot of different pieces to him that combine

a lot of the best elements of the bonds that

came before. Oh, exactly. Let's go ahead and

talk about him as the new Bond getting into the

cast. You and I had said in the GCR episode that

before this, the only thing we had seen him in

was Mrs. Doubtfire. And I kind of remember him

as a kid watching Remington Steel, but I don't

remember a lot because Remington Steel was never

a show that I... Remington Steel to me was...

This is just my own personal opinion, but as

a kid, Remington Steel was like a side... to

something like Knight Rider or Airwolf or A -Team

or MacGyver. It was like a lesser -known 80s

franchise, even though I know it's not. I know

a lot of people do remember it from the 80s.

But it was one of those things where I may be

caught maybe two or three episodes as a kid,

but I don't remember it very vividly. But I do

remember very vividly, oh, I'm sorry, it was

a run -by fruiting. You know, I remember that

yeah, I personally never heard of everything

concealed before he became bond It was until

they were talking about president's career then

I heard about that television show before that

I had no idea It's just something I completely

missed Remington Steel was quite Revolutionary

for the time. It was essentially a female PI

And back in the 80s, no one was going to take

a woman being a private investigator seriously.

And again, I'm just going off of this by memory.

I'm not looking at any information. So if I'm

wrong about this, listeners, let me know. I'll

look it up as we go along. But she had him there

to essentially be her face. what all of Magnum

is, really. Like the character of Thomas Magnum,

Remington Steel is that, but it's for someone

versus him just being it. What do you think of

Brosnan overall, as far as being Bond in this?

Personally, he's not my favorite Bond, but I

think he's a great Bond. Probably I would put

him... If I was going to rank all the bonds,

I probably would put him right under Connery.

I think the reason being he, like I mentioned,

he can do almost, he can do it all. He can handle

the action. He can do the humor. He is legitimate

when it comes to the romance and he can have

that Schwab -Depenaire type of attitude, unlike

other bonds that kind of can do one or two things

like... Roger Moore, he really can't handle the

action. He really had a hamming up and kind of

uses comedic timing You know Timothy Dalton wasn't

really great with the relationship angle or he

never really bought him as like a swell playboy

But I think Brosnan can kind of do everything

really well He's like the five tool bond where

if you think of an area that bond needs to be

Good at and excel at he can he can handle it

I still think Connery is the best just because

I think he set the standard I think no one was

as comfortable with him in the role. I think

So he's still considered, in my mind, the best

bond, but I would put Brosnan right below him

and as a very close second. Right. While you

were talking there, I actually did look up Remington

Steel. The premise is that Laura Holt, a licensed

private detective played by Stephanie Zimblist,

opened a detective agency under her own name,

but found that potential clients refused to hire

a woman. However, qualified to serve the problem,

Laura invents a fictitious male superior whom

she names Remington Steele. Through a series

of events that unfold in the first episode licensed

to Steele, Pierce Brosnan's character, a former

thief and con man whose real name is never revealed,

assumes the identity of Remington Steele. Behind

the scenes, Laura remains firmly in charge. Just

from looking at her name, the actress's name,

Stephanie Zimbalist, it got me thinking. She

is Alfred's daughter. She is the daughter of

Ephraim Zimbalist Jr., who voiced Alfred in...

Batman the Animated Series and all the other

DCAU things. So if any of you out there have

seen Batman the Animated Series, Justice League,

anything like that, and you've seen Alfred in

those cartoons, that's his daughter. Which I

thought was very interesting, yeah. Bond and

Batman. They go together so well. It's like that

six degrees of separation, you're going to find

how they combine in some way. Yeah, yes, yes

six degrees of Kevin Bacon. Yeah, exactly But

no, I mean, you know, like you said for most

people Brosnan is is the best and honestly after

watching all the films and this isn't me not

being objective because I love the Brosnan era

No matter how many invisible cars they use It's

gonna be a sore spot when we get to that I just

know But having gone through this journey with

you and with the listeners here in 18 of the

23 films, even though I never saw Diamonds of

Forever, any of the other couple of ones that

Connery did, I personally, I put Brosnan just

above him. Brosnan is my number one. Connery

is my number two. Then it would most likely go

Dalton, Moore, and Craig. That might change.

by the time we get to the Craig era depending

but uh but no Pierce Brosnan he he was cool he

was collected he was suave he was brutal when

he had to be which we'll get to that next week

um but overall very very awesome new Bond uh

and you've got uh you're also having this Sean

Bean as everybody i'm so sick of this Apparently

they don't look at any information when they

come to this character's name. It is not Alex

Trevelyan. It's Alec with a C. You got Sean Bean

as Agent 006 slash Yanos. JT in the Just the

Facts pronounced it Janus, and I blame Stallone's

Judge Dredd for that, but it's actually, for

Goldeneye's sake, it's pronounced Yanos. or Janus,

or I don't know how it's supposed to be pronounced.

Who is the main antagonist? You've got Isabella

Skorupko. Your guess is as good as mine. That's

how I'm reading it, Skorupko. As Natalia Simeonova,

I still, I don't think anybody can pronounce

that character's last name. You've got Famke

Jansen as Zenia on the top. You've got Jordan

Baker as a good guy this time. And I hear the

new M is a lady. How interesting. You've got

Dame Judi Dench as M. Godfrey John as Orimoff.

You've got Robbie Coltrane as Valentin. Not Vladimir,

JT, Valentin. You're really taking that T -shirt

real hard today, aren't you? You got Alan Cumming

as Boris Grishkinko. Of course Desmond Llewellyn

is back as Q. We have a brand new Miss Moneypenny

in Samantha Bond. That lady probably gets so

many. So many jokes thrown at her because of

her name. Before she was a Skyler in 1997, Minnie

Driver appears as Irina in this. You've got Serena

Gordon who plays Caroline, the MI6 psychologist

evaluating James. Overall, the cast in this is

absolutely well done. Yeah, it's really strong.

I mean we talked about bras then but I think

we also have to give a lot of love to a person

At least I would have to a lot of love to Sean

Bean. Oh, yes, most definitely. Yeah. No Yeah,

I agree. I personally I'm a huge Sean Bean fan.

I think he he deserves a better career than he's

had He's been in a lot of films. He pops up in

almost everything. But I think he's a perfect

counterbalance to Bond because Bond is kind of

this, you know, he has that humor to him. He

can kind of crack a joke while Sean Bean is more

cold and calculating and more straightforward.

He's taking everything seriously. You can tell

that that little, you know, how Bond will say

everything with a wink really gets to him. So

I love that rivalry between them. What do you

expect from the Cossack? Exactly. But no, no,

no. Don't get me wrong, as much love as I have

for Brosnan as Bond, no, Sean Bean as Alec was

absolutely amazing. And I think this is the first

time in Bond film franchise history that we actually

see and not just hear about another 00. Yeah.

Because there are a couple of films. Which one

was the one? And again, my memory is essentially

mush. If it's not right in front of me, which

was the one where they said they killed double

eight or they killed double. There was one. I

think it was a view to a kill. Well, yes. And

they do. We do see in living daylights, they

have that opening sequence with all the different

double those are all kind of training. You know,

they all kind of come in flying sky, skydiving

in. Yeah. And also in. octopussy which we didn't

cover but there is a sequence in that word double

o gets murdered and we see that murder play out

but this is the first time i think a double o

a has gone rogue and b has actually played a

role where we hear him talk or is more than just

like there to die right right yeah yeah that's

my point here this is the first time that another

double o besides bond is front and center stage

exactly The only other film, and I'm going to

have to go back and look at Bean's filmography

to see if I've seen him in other things. The

only other film I can remember him in right now

that I really liked him in, and it's not that

I dislike any of the other stuff he's done, it's

just the only one I can remember, is National

Treasure. He was Ian Howe in National Treasure.

Yes, he wasn't he was national treasury those

Game of Thrones fans will know him from that

series as well Right, but yeah, he's been in

He was in Lord of the Rings. We can't forget

to mention that he was in Lord of the Rings the

film trilogy of that People kill us if we don't

mention that. Yeah, he's been in a ton of different

things He was in Ronin that you mentioned Lord

of the Rings equilibrium a lot of different really

Troy Some better films. He's been in a lot of

bad movies, to be fair. He was in 1994's Black

Beauty. Oh my god. Yeah, he's had an interesting

career. He's had his ups and downs, like I mentioned.

I think he deserves a better career than he has.

I think he's talented, but sometimes it's...

He's talented, but he's also, I guess, limited

in a way. He's good for roles, and I think probably

the best thing he's done in recent memory was

Game of Thrones. Why would he take a role in

that farce mirror mirror? Oh my god. He played

the king in mirror mirror cheer that movie was

that's off topic, but that movie was yes I saw

it and it's I I have OCD when it comes to movies.

I have to watch almost every movie straight through.

But it's the first one in a very long time that

it was tough to getting through that movie. I

remember seeing, and this is kind of off topic

here, but since we're talking about Sean Bean,

it kind of fits. I remember seeing the trailer,

both the trailers to Mirror Mirror and Snow White

and the Huntsman. And although I'm sure once

Mirror Mirror, I think it actually has already

hit Netflix. I will eventually go back and actually

watch the film. But the only reason why I'm basing

my opinion on this is because of the way that

the films looked in the trailers. Mirror Mirror

is a comedy look at Snow White, whereas Snow

White and the Huntsman is more of a serious look

at that story. And I prefer the serious look

over the comedy bits. The best way I'd describe.

It's as if people tried to make The Prince's

Bride, but those people didn't get the joke behind

The Prince's Bride. But yeah, that's pretty much

all that needs to be said about that movie. Natalia's

actress, I don't remember seeing her in a lot

of stuff. Most people will know Famke Jansen

as Jean Grey in the X -Men movies. I actually

saw her before, well, after After Golden Eye,

but before X -Men she was in was it 98 when the

hell that movie come out Yeah, 98 rounders so

two years before X -Men she was a club One of

the club she played Petra One of the card club

owners I don't think she owned the place. She

was one of the workers at one of the card clubs

in Rounders, which was a Matt Damon film. I really

like her. She's awesome and you can never not

be on a top of things. Yes, I guess that's the

case. Oh Come on, you know, that was a good.

Yeah, I Don't mind it. I don't know. I just felt

her character. I get what they were going for

I mean, they're trying to if it's with the bond

more and whatnot like her type of character,

but For me just she just felt like a little too

much. I she was funny and she's something she

led bond to some great one -liners, but I don't

know it's for some reason I just I could do without

a character. I think that one of the reasons

why I like her character in this granted she's

a murdering psychotic fuckhead is what she is

and she essentially you know you want to talk

about someone walking around with you know a

mini vibrator insider all day long every time

she's in a scene where she's killing someone

essentially to Zenya Killing and sex are the

same thing and she gets off on it every single

time I Know you're trying to get over what I

just said there a second ago, but But it's one

of those things where one of the reasons why

I like her in this is because she puts a twist

on Certain lines like, you know the line in the

in the card club, you know, we're bonds like,

you know Vodka martinis shake and not stirred.

I'll have the same but straight up with it You

know, I like the tailing because you we can hear

the shake and not stirred lines so many times

You know, we can just hear it's just bought just

bond the character of James Bond say it so many

times But this time and actually, you know, it

it kind of gave it a little angle It kind of

gave it a little like in some something new and

I and I like that about it Fair enough. I can

understand that You know Jordan Baker and again,

I saw this before I ever saw It was living daylights,

wasn't it? Yes, I saw this before I ever saw

living daylights. So I had no idea I just thought

hey Here's a guy who's supposed to be the the

Felix light of Felix light, you know what I mean?

It's it's supposed to be a comedy version of

lighter. Even though it's not lighter. It's supposed

to be someone that you know Is comic relief to

Bond? Yeah, and I think kind of we talked about

the fan theory I think in like GCR an episode

I think this is kind of proof that that doesn't

exist because they didn't go with Felix Leder

Because of what happened to him and licensed

to kill they went to a new character And I think

the reason they did that is because you know

this is supposed to be the same guy I think if

it wasn't they would have just gone back to Felix

But I think this is kind of proof showing that

the theory doesn't work I don't think GoldenEye

would be the same if it was Felix in this. I

don't feel that. Because in License, as we said

last week, in License we have a really, really

emotional, scarring backstory in film throughout.

And if you had brought Felix, whether it was

Felix being the same actor, or if it was felix

being a new actor if you brought him into goldeneye

it would not work um you know no it wouldn't

work to see a felix with like half an arm and

one leg i think for for one reason i think a

lot of bond fans would be confused about why

that why that is because a lot of people didn't

see license to kill um so yeah i think i think

i understand why they did this and i think this

is just pretty with that that theory isn't And

and and he has wait Wade has one of my favorite

lines oh Great another stiff -ass Brit with your

secret codes and your passwords Show me the Rose,

please no Yeah, this film I mean doesn't always

the Bond films always don't have the greatest

reputation of Americans it you know, sometimes

we're shown to be kind of straightforward and

kind of dumb at times, but it's kind of a funny

joke that it's hard not to get behind. Yeah.

Let's talk about Dame Judi Dench as a female

M. I prefer, I prefer to think of the Bond films

going from Bernard Lee straight to her. Like

Robert Brown never really kind of happened. Because

the only time I ever really liked Robert Brown

as M was actually in License to Kill. Yeah, he

never really made a huge impression on me. And

I honestly think Judi Dench is by far the best

M. Because for one, I think her character is

the first time I think. Em is more than just

a person who gives Bond orders. I felt like they

actually try to make her, especially in the Brosnan

era, into an actual character. And I think the

reason they went with Judi Dench is at the time,

Real MI6 was run by a woman, so they wanted to

kind of bring that into the Bond franchise. And

I just love the back and forth with Brosnan and

Judi Dench. They're two great actors, and I love

her in this role. She's a great actress. And

bringing her, some of her caliber to a Bond film

is a great idea. I love it when they get legitimate

actors to play even small roles. Yeah. What did

you think of Tzikovsky, little Robbie Coltrane

as Tzikovsky? He was fun. I think with so many

other characters going on, he kind of gets lost

in the shuffle a little bit because you have

Sean Bean and you have the new and Alan Cummings.

But he kind of he felt like a lot of other brawn

characters that have that similar role okay um

i thought he was uh i knew it um uh that'll come

into play later no i i really like what i like

about the brosden era is each film is a complete

and individual story that doesn't tie into the

others. However, each film we get more of his

version of Bond. Like in this one with Robbie

Coltrane and Zukofsky, we get the story of, you

know, Walther, PPK, you know, 3 .75 millimeter,

only three people I know carry that gun. I killed

two of them. You know, we get stories of Brosnan's

version of Bond, things that happen again we'll

get to this next time we talk about tomorrow

dies more but uh... i like how we see glimpses

into his past without actually having a movie

based around his pastor based around revenge

plot uh... sure once we get to the twentieth

that's one of the the fortieth anniversary film

which i'm not mentioning the name now that a

lot of people hated you know sure in that It

seems like every last film, not last film, but

almost every last film for every Bond actor has

to be a revenge film, whereas in Connery's era,

it seemed like... Diamonds of Forever? Yeah,

Diamonds of Forever. That was a revenge film.

License was a revenge film. Was it Spy Who...

I don't know. There was one of the ones in the

Moore era where it was... It seems like revenge

films go hand -in -hand with Bond movies, which

is so similar to Die. But this one, with Zukofsky,

I love how his character continues. And as we

go along, we'll talk about that in the next coming

weeks. Now... Boris Grishenko. I did not even

know this. I didn't even recognize him. Maybe

it's because he doesn't have his blue makeup

on. But this is Nightcrawler. Before he was Nightcrawler.

I did not even know that. Yeah, Alan Cumming.

And I love him in this movie, too. That's like

I mentioned with Robbie Coltrane, who I thought

was fine. And just like I mentioned, there's

so much other good going else going on. I love

Alan Cumming as Boris. He's a lot of fun, he's

a great character. I think he brings a lot of

character without being kind of too much. And

he's got a great line, he's funny, he's very,

it's very of the time, because this was when

the internet age was kind of taking off. So seeing

this kind of computer era type of idea of what

one of those people would be like, it's very

funny, especially seeing the graphics and stuff

on the computers. But yeah, I love Alan Cumming,

and especially in this movie. We got to talk

about Q Now when you watch this back Remember

I said back in from Russia would love Q's very

first appearance how I thought the scene with

Connery in the lab and the scene here in this

one were essentially Identical to each other

even though they're talking about different things

the Did you see what I was talking about when

you watch this one? Yeah, I can understand that.

Because you can see just even with the background

and how similar they are. It was a nice homage

to what came before. And I think his interplay,

Connery's interplay with Q, and Connery and Brosnan's

interplay with Q are very similar. Now going

back and we watch it. I picked up on it when

I first watched it. I never never caught it But

well, like I said, I had never seen any of the

Connery stuff before and because I had seen all

the you know, all the other stuff, you know before

that I went back and I'm like, hey, I Remember

this scene. Where do I remember? You know, it's

whatever that's wrong. All right Let's talk about

Samantha bond as the new miss money penny. This

is she is by far my favorite money penny I still

have a soft spot for the first money pinning,

but I think she's much better than the one during

the Dalton era. And I think she's perfect for

Bond, and they have really great chemistry. And

I kind of love where they go with their relationship

during the last present movie. But yeah, it's

very fitting. I don't know if she changed her

name, but having her stand the Bond, I mean,

that's just kind of hilarious. No, she was that's

According to Wikipedia, that's her real name.

It doesn't It must have helped that when she

was going for tryouts or when she was being cast

Samantha Bond, of course But no something else

Another podcast I listened to the one I mentioned

last week and the one I mentioned again this

week Better in the dark when I listened to their

coverage of of Bond They essentially said that,

Tom and Derek said that Moneypenny is the character

that James Bond, no matter who's in the role,

the character of Bond has the respect, the most

respect for not to sleep with her. You know what

I mean? To what, you know, possibly Bond and

Moneypenny could be a couple. at somewhere down

the line because of the fact that he has enough

respect for her not to sleep with her right away.

You know what I mean? Of course, that all changes

once we get to a certain film coming up. She's

that unattainable fruit. It's more about the

chase than the finish. But yeah, I think it's

more about the flirtation. But yeah, I could

understand that. Alright, so... You know, GoldenEye,

not only is it a great film, it has such good

music. Not even just the song, but the overall

score to the film, I love it. It's so great.

When it comes to the music, the theme song, GoldenEye,

was written by Bono in the Edge of U2. Yeah,

I don't think I could see them. I don't think

I could see Bono singing this though. I don't

know if it would work No, I don't see working

with his voice talents, but yeah, I do I love

the song too I think it's perfect because it

reminds me of a lot of Bon songs that came before

but it's still true to the time that it's in

It's like it's a great combination of both Right.

So yeah, I think it's a great song in a great

way To kind of bring bond back is having a great

song and they're Putting all this talent into

one thing really worked and I love it's one of

my favorite bond songs Yeah, it is and again

I don't mind and I think it's because of the

six -year gap that I didn't really notice it

even Even watching license and gold and I well

I watched license the night before we recorded

this or the night before we recorded that episode

and I watched Goldeneye the next day and you

know I essentially I didn't watch them back -to

-back but I watched them in a short amount of

time from each other that going from Gladys Knight's

license to kill Latina Turner's you know Goldeneye

singing it was just so awesome and it just reflective

of those times and and it was just music is just

so so awesome absolutely love it and we need

to talk about before we get into our highlights

and lowlights of the overall film we also need

to talk about appearances in other media now

JT mentioned it a couple of times in in the just

the facts but I have to go on another rant here

we've got three Times where goldeneye has been

in other media you've got goldeneye 007 the 1997

video game Which everyone absolutely loves and

I love it too. Even though I never played it.

I think it's an amazing amazing game You have

goldeneye rogue agent, which I have played and

I absolutely love And then you have goldeneye

007 the 2010 Reissue now. Here's where my rant

comes in Okay, so let me see here Well, GoldenEye

007 was modified into a racing game intended

to be released for the Virtual Boy console, however

the game was cancelled before release. 2004,

Electronic Arts released Goldeneye, Rogue Agent,

the first game in the James Bond series in which

the player does not take on the role of Bond.

Instead, the protagonist is an aspiring 00 agent,

Jonathan Hunter, known by his code name, Goldeneye.

Recruited by villain of the Bond universe, Ark

Goldfinger, except for the appearance of Xenia

on top, the game was unrelated to the film and

was released to mediocre reviews, which is kind

of sad because I really like that game. It was...

Let's see, okay, so Nintendo announced a remake

of the original GoldenEye007 game at their E3

press conference on June 15th, 2010. Now this

is two years ago. I have a huge issue with Nintendo

remaking GoldenEye007. The game is a modernized

retelling of the original movie story with Daniel

Craig playing the role of Bond. Fuck you, Nintendo.

Fuck you up the Mario tail -wagon ass. You have

to be fucking kidding me. In 2010, you... Okay,

I know by this time, 2006 came around, Craig

is Bond. Fine, I get it. But if you're gonna

remake one of the best games... Go back and get

the original fucking actor go back and get Pierce

Brosnan Don't oh God give me a fucking break

fuck that game I've never played it for At least

I don't remember playing it It wouldn't be strange.

I mean obviously it's marketing because they

want a lot of people that are gonna play that

aren't Wear bras and or their Craig is their

bond it but you know, it's they I mean the game

that came out earlier this year put Craig in

a lot of other comic or our classic Bond films

like Moonraker and things like that And so it's

I guess it's it's one of those things. What are

you gonna do about it? Well, yeah, but that's

that's still it's one of those things where Probably

also has to do with licensing like I'm sure they

didn't have the licensing to the renter for bras

then and probably but still I just Don't play

the remake folks if you want the true experience

for the GoldenEye game get the original for the

N64 Okay, so getting into the overall film for

highlights The whole beginning scene is just

awesome. I absolutely love it. 006, 007, all

that good stuff. Yeah, it was a great combination

of practical effects. The bungee sequence was

pretty impressive. I was in the 90s, extreme

sports for all the rage, so of course he's going

to be bungee jumping. First, it's an incredible

stunt because that's a huge jump and him being

that close to that wall, that's crazy. And then

they cap it off with him doing the jumping to

a plane, getting into the plane, and then flying

away with the plane. Obviously, that had more

computer graphics to it, but still, it was a

great opening. That opening is very important.

It's the first thing we're going to see in Bond

for six years. So I think they did a great job

of kind of having great action, giving us an

idea of what's come before and really introducing

us to Brosnan as Bond. It was perfect. One of

the best opening pre -title sequences in all

of Bond. Yeah, I absolutely love the pre -title

sequence. It was absolutely amazing. I actually,

for the longest time back when I was a youngin

in 95, I would use half of Half of luck is, you

know, Oh, what's the stupid line? God, I love

the line. What is it? Half of everything is luck

and the other half fate I would go around telling

people that the whole time in 95 And they actually

added in a sound effect to To the scene after

Well right before Alec is killed The squeaky

wheel I love the squeaky wheel because it wasn't

there apparently when you listen to like commentaries

or you or you listen to you read other other

Articles online apparently originally it wasn't

there and I think the director or the sound engineer

or somebody said You need to add something in

here to make it seem like he's doing something

or some sort of action is going on I love that

squeaky wheel on the thing. I thought that was

great Yeah, nice little touch to let you know

that bonds never just He's always thinking and

always trying to figure his way out of a situation

Who's that the next girl I love the comedy bits

and the suavness that Brosnan has Like like more

has comedy stuff, but Moore's comedy for me kind

of fell flat Yeah, he's very more hokey with

his comedy and it's more, you know, punnerific

as you would say. It's very on the nose, but

I think Brazen has a certain fineness to it,

you know, that more dip doesn't have. Yeah. The

spider kills the fly. Those are some amazing

thunder thighs, you know. Okay, now... After

that scene where she kills the Canadian, the

Canadian Admiral, I don't know how much debate

there is amongst Bond fans about this, but whose

hand was that? Some assume it was Alex, others

assume it was Orimov's. One of the reasons why

I always assumed it was Orimov in the room with

her, with Xenia after she kills Chuck, is that

because they are scene later flying the tiger

yeah that's what i was always assumed i always

assumed but a lot of people assume that it's

alex hand that takes the whatever it is i forget

what it is off top my head but in that scene

some people assume it was alex hand and it wouldn't

surprise me because when i was watching the film

the whole scene with the tiger when you see the

the chuck feral um doppelganger past the past

the ID card it's someone dressed up as Chuck

it's someone who essentially looks exactly like

Chuck Farrell and I could see that I could see

why a lot of people think that that it was Trevelyan

originally I could see that I honestly didn't

watching it. It's not something I really paid

a huge amount of attention to Honestly, I just

it didn't really I just assumed It wasn't but

I don't know I guess I can understand the speculation

behind that but yeah I guess watching it for

the first time you don't know Alec is alive I

mean you can kind of assume because you're not

gonna have Sean Bean in a movie and not Have

him come back, but I never I never even considered

it being Alec unless until you honestly brought

it up Yeah, I love the briefing scenes with them

those are just hilarious too bad the evil queen

of numbers won't let you play your hunch It's

kind of like no Tanner stop stop sign red light

stop And I love the drink offer I love their

whole Between M and bonds interactions, I just

love them all in this movie. They're just so

good Because she has an answer for everything

he would ever say. Yeah. I mean, she does not

give an inch to Bond whatsoever. And I think

the other Ms, I mean, they kind of just let Bond

be Bond. But I think she is more forceful. And

she lets her opinion be known, which I really

appreciate. Yeah. The greatest thing about this

film is former friends who become enemies It's

bond. It's it's it's essentially bonds ultimate

adversary. I mean Trivalent even says in himself.

It's it's insulting to think that I have not

anticipated your every move as You know, how

can James Bond go? How can double -oh -seven

go up against that? You can't you have to you

know, you have to figure something else out and

this is one of the reasons why Outside of the

fact that it's Brosnan outside of the fact that

the gadgets the plot of this film Is why I love

this film so much the fact that it's not just

Someone who wants to topple England in Europe

while it is topple England in Europe's, you know

put them back into the Stone Age. It's not just

a drug dealer, it's someone that James knew and

considered a friend. Yes, and plus Alec is a

more sympathetic villain in a way because his

family was legitimately screwed over by the British

government and he has a legitimate case and you

can understand where he's coming from and what's

happened to him. His plot. Yes, it's to eventually

It's one that's gonna work out financially, but

it's more of a personal one We talked about how

license to kill is a very personal film and this

one is and but this one's far more personal for

the bond villain which is Completely new for

the bond franchise. Yeah, I Have this in all

capital letters bond in a tank. Fuck. Yeah That

was just so an entire scene is so awesome. Use

the bumper. That's what it's for. I absolutely

love that scene. That is so freaking cool. Yes.

I love how they use the Bond theme in that scene,

too. I think it's so awesome. Just like right

when he breaks through the wall and that's when

it goes in the high gear. It's perfect. And it

answers the question. Tank vs. Train, what wins?

Seeing that showdown, yeah, that's great. I don't

know if this is true, but I'm assuming people

saw that scene, and it's like, that's what I

want to play. That could have been why there

was a video game, because that just looks like

a fun thing to be a part of. Oh yeah, most definitely.

Standard operating procedures, there are thousands,

but I only pay them lip service. And again, it

shows you the whole scene with Natalia. The beach

scene with Natalia. She actually points it out.

He was your friend and now he's not. Either he

will kill you or you will kill him. I do want

to point out, and it's not really a highlight

or a lowlight, but it's more of a plot thing,

and I don't know if you noticed this. I didn't

notice it until Spike TV because they are, well,

their original slogan was, you know, TV for men

or TV for guys, or guys, it was essentially like

Spike TV is the answer to the Wii Channel. And

I don't mean Wii as in Nintendo. You know they

love You know hanging their hat on running the

Star Wars films all six of them In a weekend

or something or else and I was watching before

I before I rewatched Goldeneye I was watching

Empire again and The end scene there where they

have to get Luke If you look at the bottom of

the antenna Where Alec and Bond are fighting

and you look how Bond is holding on At a couple

of points during the fight and then he obviously

he lets go of Alec That whole scene there reminded

me of Luke hanging off of the bottom of Cloud

City It just it looks so similar to me Just the

movements and everything else All in all, for

a final highlight for me, all in all, a fully

loaded film. I really, really enjoy watching

GoldenEye. It's not something where I've said

before, where, oh, this film is taking, you know,

it's taking too long. This film, to me, has the

right amount of pacing, has great music, has

great action, has great emotional moments. It's

just overall... One of the best Bond films. What

about you for highlights on GoldenEye? What did

you like about the film? Um, we touched upon

a lot of them already, but one thing in particular

Now this the Cold War's era over at this point

and they call it out to they mean that's what

I like about this Maybe they called out like,

you know, is there a place for bond in this new

world? and I think they proved that by kind of

a Using some of the past they have Russians,

you know evil Russian Characters, but they're

rogue agents are not part of the country So they

kind of pay homage to what came before and then

by kind of having the age kind of the evilness

is different It's not another country. It's another

person and they're vendetta against the past

I appreciate that I think it did a great job

of reinventing the character by saying truth

saying true to the franchise It's kind of incredible

that they could make this movie in the 90s And

a lot of it is very reminiscent of the 1960s,

but not to the point where it feels out of place.

I think that was pretty impressive. We talked

about just the action is fantastic. It holds

up really well. It's some of the best action

sequences, great car chase sequences. I love

the final showdown. I love when Bon, you. Uses

real -life locations and makes them fantastical

and in this that satellite which I think is located

in Puerto Rico my friend actually went there

it's This real place you can go to and it does

seem like a thing about a sign out of science

fiction And it fits perfectly with this movie

and I love when they use real locations like

that But yeah overall, it's it's supremely strong

cast is really great acting is top -notch pacing

is well done the plot is Complex someone but

it really is straightforward. They don't get

lost in it. The story is simple. It's like here

Here it is. This is the story unlike we mentioned

with license to kill that kind of convolutes

itself and gets things too much to us in turns

the turn in this there's one big turn there's

one big surprise and then it goes from there

and it's the If I were to rank my best Bond films

this has to be up top looking at everything it

does well and Howard And Brazen, of course, we

mentioned is perfect for this role and perfect

as a Bond character. Some of the things I just...

This is just nitpick. Most of it is just nitpicks

for me. It doesn't take away from my overall

enjoyment of the film. I just can't get into

a chick that smokes a cigar. That was my one

turn off to Xenia was she's smoking a cigar.

Just can't I just can't get into that Yeah, I

had to go back and think well they kind of touch

upon this in later Bond movies But when you see

a cigar and I was thinking like in the 90s, I'm

just thinking Bill Clinton is that a Bill Clinton

reference? But it was before that all went down.

So but yeah Okay now if a Lot of people say that

obviously because how the film plays out that

Boris is in on it from the beginning don't see

how even in the scene when they show up at Severnaya

I don't see after they land because we never

see him again until the church I think it is

or so I forget but if he's in on it then where

the hell is he when they fly out because it actually

shows you the tiger flying out of of Severnaya

it's a two -person helicopter it's not like he's

dangling Off the off the thing off the you know

the bottom of the helicopter It was like did

did Trevelyan show up somewhere and pick him

up on a snowmobile or you know? So that's one

of my biggest deals of how the hell is Boris

in on this Like how did that happen? Yeah, I

I struggled with that too I at the end I assumed

he wasn't because I figured like you mentioned

if he was he would have he would have gone with

them. I felt he was brought into it more because

he was forced to after what happened than he

wanted to. That was my assumption. Right. And

I can kind of go along with that because after

all, Trevelyan does say if he moves, kill him.

So it's not it's not like he is it's not like

Boris is one of those characters where he's fully

in. Boris is essentially I hate to say this,

but. He's essentially golden eyes Mayday Yeah,

yeah, he's kind of I think he's morally Questionable

and I think when he's very in towards in for

himself So if there's any chance that he might

in any way get hurt. He's gonna go with Whatever

is best for his true survival. That was my take

on his character. He was in for itself not for

anyone else And you know my my response to him

saying she's a level two programmer she only

has access to the guidance system well that's

kind of the fucking point boris because she is

a guidance system person she can change the direction

of the satellite duh i don't know did you have

any little lights on this one um not many like

we mentioned um overall i think natalia i like

natalia but i feel like they almost went They

maybe made her a little bit too much too straight

place like she doesn't feel like a bond girl

in any way They kind of get better with it in

time. I like her character I like that she has

a lot to do and she takes charge at times But

I just never felt like the relationship with

her and bond really was all that strong because

she never felt like a sexual character in a way

Which is a good thing, but for a bond girl you

expect something like that Or at least there

to be some sort of like a relationship or some

type of attraction between those characters But

my only really big nitpank was we talked about

how Alec knows bond He knows his history knows

what he's good at what he's bad at which kind

of which is why the ejectors there the sequence

and where they're in the Helicopter why that

scene always bugs me because he could he should

know that bond is always placed in situations

like this And always gets out of it. So like

why would they like why would you put bond in

that? Why would you kill him in that way type

of always kind of bugged me? I mean it was a

fun sequence it it was well crafted but If you

look at Alec and what he knows He should have

came up with a better way. It's typical bond.

It's something that is as much bond as anything.

But it just doesn't make sense when you look

at the actual character of Alec and his motivations

and what he knows. I think it would have been

a perfect place for him to say, no, don't do

this. He's great at these things and do something

else. But that one area just always bugged me

because it's like, why are they killing him?

It just seemed an odd choice, I guess. Alright,

so we are going to go to a quick commercial break

and we'll come back with our final thoughts on

GoldenEye. Self -destruct system, and naturally,

all the usual refinements. Now, this I'm particularly

proud of. Behind the headlights, Stinger missiles.

Excellent. Just a thing for unwinding after a

rough day at the office. Need I remind you, 007,

that you have a license to kill, not to break

the traffic laws? I wouldn't think of it. Good.

Right, let's get on to more practical matters.

A typical leather belt, male, size 34, buckle,

notch. We're finished. Yes. Good. A typical leather

belt. Hugh, I'm familiar with that device. Not

one with a 75 -foot repelling cord built into

the buckle. Fire and out shoots a pitot, followed

by a high tensile wire designed to support your

weight. I see. And what if I need additional

support? It's tested for one 007. Flight 878

to St. Petersburg. X -ray document scanner. A

pen. This is a Class 4 grenade. Three clicks,

arms the four -second fuse. Another three, disarms

it. How long did you say the fuse was? Oh, grow

up, 007. They all said the pen was mightier than

the sword. Thanks to me, they were right. Look,

let's ask Fred here to demonstrate for us. Here

we are. Sorry about this, Fred. One, two, three.

Don't say it. The writing's on the wall? Along

with the rest of you. Now, 007, do please try

and return... Do please try and return some of

this equipment in pristine order. Don't touch

that! It's my lunch. You can now hear the GeekCast

All right, so final thoughts on GoldenEye, sir.

It's a great Bond movie. It's a great movie.

It's the perfect way to bring back Bond. It's

a great way to introduce Brosnan as Bond. And

if you are not a Bond fan, you never watched

a Bond movie before, There are a few Bond movies

I think are great to start with and I honestly

think GoldenEye is a great way to start because

it kind of some people may be a little hesitant

to watch a movie from the 1960s, but I think

this one is a perfect one to go into if you've

never watched a Bond movie. It's very reminiscent

of what came before, but it also holds up for

today's standards. So yeah, a great Bond movie.

Yeah. Yeah, I absolutely love this one. um it's

it's such a great film it's i would have a hard

time i don't know i know you in our you know

bond month or bond spotlight here are going to

eventually go back and and and rank the films

i'm probably gonna have to do that as well most

likely for my own personal thing but I have a

hard time not ranking this one number one because

it is so damn good and Because it was like my

real first Introduction to bond where I was actually

able to get every you know I mean get understand

everything because a nine -year -old outside

of D plane D plane is not gonna get what the

hell is going on in the man with the golden gun

You know But overall Golden eye so good Just

so, so good. We hope you enjoyed the Bond film

review here in M .Y .R.'s Shake and Not Stirred

series, and wish you'll join us next time when

we will be talking about Tomorrow Never Dies.
