And now the latest and greatest in movies with
M wire C Jarvis is it that time the house party
protocol sir correct? Hello and welcome to MWIRE
movie weekend review brought to you by the GeekCast
Radio Network. I am one of your hosts, movie
role Dan and joining me on today's adventure
is TfG1 Mike. Hello. How are you today? Tired,
hot and ready to get this summer over with. That's
the trifecta. So that's awesome. Also joining
us today is from AlterGeek and off the cuff is
Michael Booth Powers. How are you? Good. How
are you? i am amazing uh... i am at all action
that last summer's tagline i'm just i'm happy
uh... well i guess we can kind of given that
people a little bit of idea of what we're doing
here today because it's a little bit different
than normal we're not necessarily doing a movie
review if you have checked out and were previously
probably checked out some of our summer preview
caps in our fall preview, but this is a little
bit different. We're actually going to be looking
past at the looking back at this past summer
to see like how it stacks up kind of give a little
bit roundabout our view of of the summer of 2013
movie wise you know as the days are getting shorter
the airs are getting a little bit crisper and
the kids are going back to school you know summer
summer is fortunately or unfortunately coming
to an end so with that comes the end of the summer
movie season you know the end of the block he
says the air is getting a little bit crisper
that's only if you live on the atlantic ocean
or in michigan it's it's cold here Wish it was
cold here in Kentucky. Holy crap. Yeah. Well,
it's a little bit crisp, you know football's
in the air here in Baltimore Yes, the Ravens.
Let's hope they can win I'm hoping not anyways,
but Anyway, so that kind of ends the summer movie
season as well We're kind of getting into the
fall now a lot of the blockbusters are kind of
going away I'm seeing a little bit of transition
But before we say goodbye, we thought we would
do a little bit of a recap of this past summer
the highs the lows the good the bad all that
great stuff. So the first thing we're going to
do here, though, is kind of if you're anything
like me, when you were in school, the big thing
you did when you came back was you did that classic,
you know, how I spent my summer vacation, you
know, whether you went to the theme park or the
beach or if you were cool and hip and with it
and you spent your summer inside air conditioning
playing video games all day, whatever that may
be. We're going to take that idea and twist it
a little bit for this episode. And we're going
to talk about how we spent our summer movie season,
what we saw, what we didn't see, all that. that
good stuff? I think I'll do a little bit of reverse
order here and I'll start with Booth. Since we
have two mics, it's going to get a little confusing,
but since you are one of those that works in
a movie theater, you can provide some good insight.
For the summer of 2013, what stood out for you,
good or bad? Didn't you see that you wanted to
see all that good stuff? How was your summer
movie season of 2013? I'd have to say surprising.
There was a lot of things that I was disappointed
by this summer. But, you know, the one thing
I kept kept my hopes up for was Pacific Rim.
And luckily, that didn't disappoint me as much
as other things did this summer. There wasn't
a whole lot that I wanted to see that I didn't
get to see. Because, you know, you work at a
movie theater, you know. Yeah, I do but sometimes
you know, there's a certain point where You know
if you if you were not me I mean I work two days
a week at the theater But I work doubles both
days and then I have the rest of the time off
But if you're my wife who's the general manager
of a theater and she works like five days She
doesn't want to go in preview movies, even though
she can for free because that's where she is
five days a week She doesn't want to go and do
that But So, you know, it kind of depends on
how often you work. And, you know, I like to
go Wednesday night if there's a movie that I
want to see and I'll catch something like I've
seen Riddick, which was fun. I'd have to say
the most disappointing movie to me this summer
is probably some other. I don't know how you
guys felt about it in general, but Iron Man 3
was my most disappointing movie of the summer.
That's it. You're off the shelf. We did an episode
of That Way Back When, but I don't think it's
disappointing. I overall enjoyed that movie,
but I guess not in getting, since it's not an
Iron Man review, but why do you think that movie
was disappointing, just to kind of give an idea?
I just felt like it was the first movie to come
out post -Avengers, so I had a lot riding on
that particular movie. As in terms of how the
Marvel movies are going to stack up post Avengers
And I don't think it did as well as I it didn't
it didn't live up to my expectations It felt
more like it should have been Iron Man 2 than
Iron Man 3 and I felt like Iron Man 2 should
have been Iron Man 3 In terms of the amount of
shield presence in either of the movies to keep
that connective tissue running But we talked
about that on an altered geek which you know,
will air sometime. But, I don't know. You know,
Pacific Rim was the one I had high hopes for
and it definitely delivered. I was looking forward
to Man of Steel and that didn't really disappoint
me that much. I don't know, you know, it's weird.
Everything was, almost everything was kind of,
sort of a let down. It's kind of a meh summer
for me with the exception of Pacific Rim. So,
but... Now we can let Mike talk about How he
spent his summer movies Yes, Mike. Well, how
was your I mean, you're pretty well known as
you're not the biggest fan of going in the movies
But you go here and there but for what you did
see what did you think of the summer of 2013?
like for the for the theater the for the theaters
that I go to I go to like if Okay, I'm gonna
let the audience in on my life here a little
bit currently I'm taking care of my mom because
she can't really take care of herself all the
time um every now and then we will go to movies
together so i go to that theater and it's maybe
20 bucks for the two of us for tickets because
i don't buy i will never i'm sorry mike i don't
mean to offend but movie theaters in general
suck for me now because they're like oh Spend
money on tickets and then spend seventy dollars
on popcorn and soda. Oh No, I don't even buy
concessions when I go like no Never I didn't
want to offend since you work it. You're not
going to offend me. Okay. Well, you know, so
I myself, you know, I might Bring a soda or bring
a box of candy and a backpack or you know something
that they're not gonna say anything to me about
But you know, we'll go to that theater and we'll
spend 20 bucks to see a movie or I will go to
a theater that is basically a hole in the wall
and I'll spend 675 and I think I saw Iron Man
3 I saw Despicable Me 2 Man of Steel Honestly,
I think those are the only three that because
I saw Iron Man 3 twice, but I'm trying to remember
if I saw any... I know there's a lot of ones
that I wanted to see. I wanted to see Fast and
Furious 6. I wanted to see G .I. Joe Retaliation,
which I know G .I. Joe currently, as of this
recording, Retaliation is out. I don't know if
Fast 6 is out yet, but... There's a lot of ones
I wanted to see, and normally for me, Fast 6,
that would have been the first thing I see, but
didn't they release that? They usually release
the Fast movies in early April. or they used
to, at least Fast Five came out in April when
it came out. So I think Fast Six was like, okay,
well, I'll get to it when I get to it. And that's
pretty much how I've been this summer. I'll get
to it when it gets to Redbox or Netflix or whatever
else. And it's not that I don't want to see the
movies. I don't want to have to go to the theater
to see it unless it's super big budget. With
me and Iron Man 3, I disagree with Mike. Iron
Man 2 was... Was it's not the best movie. I'm
not ever gonna say it was but it was a good movie
it focused on setting up the Avengers and Iron
Man 3 is kind of like the epilogue epilogue to
Avengers for Tony Stark because in the Avengers
as we said in that episode in the Iron Man 3
episode He basically had this life -altering
thing happen to him. So the third movie based
on him is gonna You know be what the third movie
was and he's going excuse me going to be doing
a lot of introspective thinking and rearranging
his life. So I loved Iron Man. OK, but the thing
is, they did that. Well, my thoughts on it are
actually, and like I said, Steve and I talked
about an alter geek. So maybe you'll understand
what I'm talking about when you hear that. But
I got the whole introspective thing. I totally
got that. I just felt like because he gets introspective
in the second one, too, about his dad. And I
felt like you could have mashed those two things
together and like she'll I don't know. The shield
involvement in two which nobody liked but I liked
it in two I felt would have felt it would have
fit better in three being that it's post Avengers
and they would be keeping an eye on their quote
-unquote heroes Versus all the shield involvement
in Iron Man 2 that everyone hated having like
They're just there for no reason So that's that's
I wasn't one of those everyone hated bits cuz
one of the things I love about the Iron Man 3
movie is that he's telling a story to someone
that we don't know until the very end of the
movie but Going on you know for me. I I don't
care what what other animated movies come out
this year for me Despicable me too is the animated
movie of the year for me Man of Steel I liked
it because it was something different. Thank
God somebody's not you know, trying to emulate
Richard Donner. You know, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed
the storytelling in that movie more than I thought
I would because I was like everybody else saying,
oh, wait, this isn't how it's supposed to happen.
This is, you know, and then they showed us how
he crash landed, you know, you know, in flashbacks.
I like that. I like that they took the in flashback
approach other than those. Three I can't think
of any other ones to this point of you know when
we're gonna release this that I've seen This
year, it's you know I want to see Such and such
and such and such I want to see now you see me
I want to see two guns I want to see a lot of
the stuff that's that's come out. I just haven't
I just I pick and choose I maybe see Between
the spring like the early months if something
good comes out in the summer I see maybe five
films a year. Wintertime, last year it was a
little bit better than what this year is gonna
be for me, but we'll get into that when we get
to Christmas time. But the summer movie season,
it was okay. For me the highlight overall for
live action was Iron Man 3 though. What about
you, Dan? Okay, well, I kind of will repeat what
Mike said, and this summer was surprising for
a few reasons. I mean, there were a few disappointments
for me. The two biggest that come to mind are
definitely Star Trek Into Darkness and Man of
Steel. Two movies I think overall enjoyed, but
two that I think expectation -wise they did not
meet. Like, they kind of just felt like passable,
but they didn't seem to kind of take advantage
of their opportunity all that much. Iron Man
3, like you mentioned, I thought it was fine.
I thought it was overall solid. I do think, though,
the more, like, that's not a movie I see myself
really resonating with me the years go on. And
for the most part, the big summer movies this
year, it's kind of the consistent, even the ones
I like, like World War Z. I mean, I've seen pretty
much everything. I'm kind of like the opposite
of you, TFG1 Mike. I go to the movies nearly
every weekend. I mean, I saw, last weekend, I
saw These three movies in the theater or just
just last weekend, you know, I've seen kick -ass
to I've seen I've seen pretty recently I've the
world's end and if I look back at the movies
that I feel like Really stood out to me and on
a good end or Pacific Rim, which I thought was
awesome It's to me what summer movies are for
it's huge a lot of a huge amount of fun great
special effects, great fight scenes. It's one
of the best movies experiences I had this year,
just in the huge massive scope of that movie.
And the second was The World's End, Edgar Wright's
movie, which I thought was really, really well
done. The first time I saw it, I thought it was
good. I kind of wasn't blown away by it, but
actually the second viewing was a must. And I
just realized how intricate that story is and
how deep it really gets. It's just... an amazingly
told story, and Simon Pegg in that movie is fantastic.
But for the most part, I would say besides those
two movies, it just seemed like Elysium to me
was a disappointment. It was good, but not nearly
to the level of District 9. And that seems to
be the consistent theory. It's just things are
good, but not great. I would if I were to like
grade this summer I would give it a passing grade
like maybe a c -minus or so um, it just I don't
know it just to me seemed like a summer of just
Like power said it just nothing really. I feel
like it's going to go on Yeah, I mean I like
i'm looking at you know The the show notes that
the viewers can't see here and I uh, I think
i've seen All but three of the movies in the
top 15 for the summer blockbusters um, and I
know like when we get down into some of the later
stuff, there's something that really surprised
me. But I totally agree about Star Trek Into
Darkness. I think that's one of the most... After
Iron Man 3, that becomes the next most disappointing
movie of the summer that I saw because I didn't
like the rehash of everything. There were certain
choices I think they could have made. Going into
the movie... I was expect like I knew that Benedict
Cumberbatch was in it. I knew there was the rumor
that he was going to play Khan and whatnot and
you know, it was it was a rumor because all the
production stills said he was some other guy
and You know, it's fine. Okay, so there it's
a it's a new villain and I'm I remember walking
into the theater It was gonna the IMAX version
of it had already been previewed and later that
night they were gonna preview the standard version
and I walked in in the morning and the people
that had previewed it, they started talking about
Khan and I was like, wait a minute, are you guys
talking about Into Darkness? They're like, yeah.
I'm like, ugh. Now I'm just even more let down
by the movie. Now, let me ask you this, are you
let down by the movie because it was Khan because
they went back to the old continuity to bring
him? No, it wasn't so much it was my initial
reaction yes i was bummed that it was con again
so like you know it's just you know they they
they made this huge effort in the first one to
make this to create this alternate reality and
then they just now and this is kind of like okay
but now we're just going to retell the same stories
but with a twist and then there wasn't even that
twist that there was that you know there there
wasn't even like a twist it was almost like a
straight up straight up retelling of it my the
twist to me would have been if I always thought
that Khan, because Starfleet, the way that movie
was portrayed, Starfleet, they looked like jerks
in that movie. And I felt sorry for Khan. I did
not feel sorry for Starfleet at all. I felt sorry
for Khan because I felt like he was some guy
that was, you know, he was woken up. His team
was woken up. They were going to be used as weapons.
I thought like in the beginning of the movie,
I thought that their payload. Was you know, they
were gonna their orders were to fire the torpedoes
at the Klingon homeworld and I thought his troops
were gonna be like the first wave of like a shock
team and They were gonna, you know go in stealthily
and and and start a battle with the Klingons
I thought that's what they were I thought Khan,
you know Hitch was going along with this plan
and he was like the mastermind of it But then
somewhere along the way he was like wait, I don't
want this for my people We just want to be left
alone. And I thought he was going to be like
just some guy that was trying to get his people
free. Right. And he was doing it the only way
he knew how. And then and then all of a sudden,
all of a sudden they do this whole thing where
it's like, OK, well, that's not what it is. And
we're going to dial up future Spock. And he's
going to tell us that Khan is a bad guy. And
then everyone's going to treat him like he's
a bad guy. I was like, now you've lost me. See,
I don't have you know, I've mentioned this many
times before in the over. 100 episodes we've
done here on Mwire. The only classic Trek films
I've ever seen, I've seen bits and pieces of
Search for Spock, I've seen bits and pieces of
Voyage Home, and bits and pieces of The Undiscovered
Country. I have absolutely zero interest in seeing
any of these films, any of the original six films.
in their entirety so i didn't have going into
it i went into it with okay we have the new universe
in the 2009 movie what is that crew gonna do
now i didn't have the you know baggage of oh
star trek to wrath of con oh whatever his name
was that played the original con you know i didn't
have that at all i get the diehard trekkies some
diehard trekkies uh didn't like it but I just
wish there was like something more happened in
that movie. Well, that's what I'm getting at.
I mean, I'm not trying to compare it directly
to Star Trek 2. I mean, I wasn't even doing that,
but that was also my fear is like, OK, now you're
just doing Khan and now you're opening yourself
up to being compared to another directly compared
to another movie. And so that's like right there.
You're setting yourself up for criticism. But
like, yeah, I agree. They didn't do enough. They
didn't put a new spin on the character and they
could have. Speaking about Star Trek, and kind
of this gets me into a question I want to ask
you all. Mike, I know you haven't seen much this
summer, but I think you can still even add into
this question. And with Star Trek, especially
with the con, I mean, I guess, but there's a
huge amount of 9 -11. The big topic this year
I felt in movies I've heard a lot was the constant
usage of 9 -11 imagery. I mean, you saw it in
Star Trek when you have the... Con like you mentioned
you see the sympathetic villain that was kind
of used by the government for certain purpose
and then he tries to take advantage of it and
crash a gigantic building or vehicle into you
know a city and you sort of mean that idea came
up a lot to you with With man of steel also with
iron man 3 in the post -traumatic stress and
they seems like that was a common theme and a
lot of people complain about it a lot of people
thought it was overdone and my question is do
you think there is actually Increase of 9 -11
imagery or we just kind of or people just kind
of using that or they kind of seeing it when
it's not really there They just you see a building
falling down and they're just saying hey, that's
9 -11 imagery when it isn't meant to be It's
just meant to be a building falling down I see
it as it's meant to be a building falling I mean
unless they actually show not necessarily because
they're gone but unless they actually show two
buildings that look exactly like the old towers
unless they actually show that kind of like direct
imagery of hey we're gonna homage this tragic
event in America's history if a building falls
down a building falls down I don't necessarily
see 9 -eleven imagery in it You know with with
Iron Man 3 The dude went through Time well not
time, but he went through space. He went through
a space portal. You're gonna have post -traumatic
stress None of that has ever happened in real
life. I don't care who the hell is working on
friggin warp drive for the real world That's
never gonna happen in any of our lifetimes With
Man of Steel, the problem with Man of Steel is
they choose to set Metropolis in New York every
single time. That's the problem with the Superman
movies. That's why I can see some people saying,
oh, it's not 11 imagery. If you choose to put
Metropolis in New York City, well, duh. Well,
I think, I mean. Before the powers go I think
if you it's more so I pointed out the billy's
falling down But I think there's because that's
the obvious go -to but there's definitely a little
bit more to it than than that if you just look
at the after effects of disasters and just how
They're the dealt with afterwards and stuff like
that. Like just even just the you know, the common
use of dust is a big thing I mean, we've had
earlier this year. I went through all the Spielberg
films and one that Was the mind is well where
the world's which is one of the really first
huge summer blockbuster is that death? Like used
a huge amount of 9 -eleven imagery. It was really
one of the first summer movies to kind of do
that I mean to a great extent and it was it was
obvious and just in the way that The overall
mood of summer movies in a way because if you
look at Just the big movies this summer iron
and three men of steel start trick in the darkness
There is a darker edge to them. They are more
cynical more gritty. I mean that could just be
a product of the time, or it could be a reflection
of where we are as a society. Because if you
look at, there aren't many movies like Pacific
Rim. I think that's a big reason that movie stands
out, is because it's fun. And I think movies
are afraid to be fun anymore. Even something
like Avengers, yes, I think that was an example
of a movie that was willing to be fun. But overall,
a lot of the big summer films are kind of taking
that dark night effect and becoming a lot more
real. I mean, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
It's just an interesting... That's just what's
happened this year. Look at last year. Look at
2012, summer of last year. You had specifically
the Avengers. That was a good, fun comic movie
with a couple of dark moments in it. You know,
that was, you know... But I would also say Amazing
Spider -Man felt far... was a lot more moody
than Raimi's Spider -Man and obviously Darkknock
Rises, which is... Yeah. Well, you know, I was
specifically looking at something like Avengers
or something like, you know, way back in the
day, Hook. That was an amazing summer movie right
there. Well, yeah, but that was also like 20
years ago. Yeah, I know. I'm saying we don't
see a lot of that. Anyways, I haven't been talking
enough. Not this year we haven't, no. And maybe
next year it'll be different. Mike, Powers, I
should say, I guess. So there's no confusion.
What do you what are your feelings about the
topic? Okay, the whole 9 -eleven imagery thing
I've heard that in connection a lot with Man
of Steel and I Hate it. I hate I don't I don't
understand why all of a sudden now like the 9
-eleven stuff is coming up I mean, I see what
people are talking about But I think I see it
because they're talking about it Like I Sure,
I mean I see a giant building falling down, you
know, I'm reminded of I you know, obviously 2001
happened, you know, I I see a giant building
falling down. I remember that But I don't like
link the two and like hate on the movie or think
the movies like trying to do something it's just
like, you know, I know that's what that's what
a building looks like when it's falling down
and I think that it's just And even before the
Twin Towers, you know, fell, I saw, I've seen
buildings, you know, through controlled demolitions
come down. And there's a certain, you know, the
Hollywood, the bigger Hollywood blockbusters
are going for the more realistic approach and
trying to set things in this real world. And
that's fine. I just, I mean, I don't know. I'm
not offended by it, I guess. I don't get offended
by it, so I can't really speak to it. In a way,
I feel like it's just like clickbait on the internet
like, you know Trying to like stir up some kind
of discussion that doesn't really need to happen
But then again, I'm also the guy that was mad
that you know all the promotional stuff for spider
-man that you know The first spider -man got
pulled when the Twin Towers fell I'm the one
that got mad when Sony went back through and
ripped out the last half of Men in Black 2 because
9 11 happened because like Hollywood's first
reaction to 9 11 was, oh, we have to take the
Twin Towers out of everything. And everyone's
kind of doing this. You know, Americans doing
this. Remember the Twin Towers. But yet they're
trying to do all this stuff to pull the Twin
Towers from memory. And that's irritated me.
But I'm also the guy that was kind of like when
it happened, I was like, you know, the biggest
middle finger we can give right now is just to
rebuild the damn things taller. You know like
in defiance that was my gut react. I mean yeah,
I was devastated with everybody But I also wasn't
like crying over it. I was more like let's just
be defiant and rebuild the damn things You know
shift them shift them on their plot build a memorial
build two new towers build them taller and say
F you I Mean I 100 % agree regarding the I just
brought it up because I felt it was like every
Every time I read a review for Man of Steel,
every time I read a review for Star Trek in the
Darkness, or listen to a review, it was a constant
theme people brought up, and I understand it
with Into Darkness a little bit more because
of the idea of taking a ship and trying to crash
it into a building, but I do think I am with
you. I think it is kind of a self -fulfilling
prophecy here. No. Go ahead. I'm sorry, I don't
mean to interrupt you. Where did In Into Darkness?
I'm trying to remember this now he was are we
talking about the very end when the enterprise
is or when the when the Dauntless is that what
it was I can't remember what the name of the
frickin ship was the whatever ship Benedict Cumberbatch
was it me it was in a controlled fall was he
actually trying to crash it in or is he just
trying to crash it or is he actually trying to
crash it into something from what my understanding
was that he was trying to crash it into the where
Starfleet HQ Starfleet HQ was that was my understanding
I could be incorrect I only saw the movie once
so I I can see that but then again there's a
giant there's a difference between a giant spaceship
that's in I don't know but I'm also kind of wondering
why Pacific Rim doesn't get thrown in this I
mean and I think a reason Pacific Rim maybe doesn't
throw into it is because of the mood of the movie
it is a little bit I mean it's a little more
cheeky it's not as dark or grim or something
like that maybe because it takes place in Tokyo
I don't know and I go ahead So basically movies
that are so any movie that shows Destruction
in a city that has a human aspect to it Is automatically
be considering is automatically drawing up 9
-eleven imagery for some people Seem so and I
I want to I'm agreeing I've just brought it up
because I 100 % disagree with it too I don't
think I think people are kind of saying it's
there when it really isn't just because it's
an easy It's an easy criticism. It's an easy
talking point. Like you said, it's an easy click
You know, you know why not in Pacific Rim and
there's huge destructions of buildings there
is you know, you see especially like beginning
of the movie when they're talking about like
Trying to fight, you know fighting fighting the
terror and all that stuff. You can you can probably
you know, it's like those movies that are those
shows that conspiracy theories when they tie
all these things together and saying what this
really meant and what this really meant and all
that good stuff and I think you can kind of find
meaning in everything if you try hard enough
and I think yes, maybe it's there but I think
it's more conscious and I think People are putting
it when it doesn't really like a movie like World
of the World is obviously Doing it and Spielberg
is pretty evident with it. I don't think Man
of Steel did it I think Man of Steel has buildings
falling because The whole point of any media,
especially this day and age, is to escape real
life people, come on. I've stated this opinion
many times before on this show and others. I
know the difference between you know Superman
flying through a building and it getting collapsed
over and you know that's make -believe and a
plane crashing into a tower killing millions
of people. There's a huge difference there and
the fact is one of them is fake. Yeah it's just
I don't know, the one argument, and I don't even
consider it like 9 -11 imagery, the one thing
I can kind of get on board with like Man of Steel
is that if Zack had taken the time to show one
shot of Metropolis being evacuated, I think that
part of the movie would have played a lot better
because as it is, there's a lot of people that
are just like, that fight was completely reckless
and you know. Hundreds of thousands of people
died because of what was going on I mean and
that's just and a lot of people have said on
the along with that argument. It's because Zack
never showed anybody getting out The fight just
happened in and around civilians that were just
kind of you know watching what was going on you
know, it was and The other thing is kind of like
I One issue I had with Manaseel at the end, too,
is like, you know, when the dubstep machine is
going off and they wait, you know, they see cars
and people getting pancaked and everything, and
they wait until the last possible minute to start
evacuating their building. Who? Yeah, I was like,
that's the wrong way to frame that. That just
goes back to if he had framed it a different
way and shown people evacuating, blah, blah,
blah, which he did to a certain extent, but just
not in a way that I guess not in a way that.
Conveyed that enough people got out I guess Which
I can totally see that speaking and speaking
on that just for one moment that we could probably
move on to The next section did you hear he did
recently come out with an explanation behind
that whole end of the movie controversy Did any
of you hear what he had to say of regarding it
at all building the lore? It was building the
lore and his big thing was that Massive death
was meant to I don't have the quote in front
of me exactly so I apologize if I misquote him
but the gist just of it from what I read was
you know building a massive death is meant to
signify tragedy and which I felt was kind of
an odd quote because isn't massive death in itself
tragedy so I didn't really understand what he
was going for and his explanation didn't really
for me Give me an idea really what he was trying
to say. I don't think he really had an idea I
think he just wanted to see things blow up, which
is fine. Whatever. I'm curious to maybe get that
blue right and listen to the You know commentary
unless they pull a Star Trek in the darkness
and only put it on the iTunes version Let's not
even call me well the thing about With the with
what Zack said in the lore. That's kind of like
what I said when I walked out of Man of Steel
It's like now I have to wait and see how this
is addressed in the next movie Yeah, I think
with the Batman thing maybe in the long run Man
of Steel is one of those movies people look back
on and maybe a little more forgiving because
of how it's handled in upcoming films well that
just touching on that real quick one of the most
compelling rumors I heard is that they could
view the the batman versus superman thing could
the the setup for it could be that because of
the destruction that happened in metropolis that
batman could view superman as a villain and superman
you know views batman as a villain because you
know he's a vigilante so um that's like one of
the possible setups i've heard for that movie
Okay, so overall the summer it seems like seems
like the overall thought process is that it is
uneven to say the least You know some highlights
here, but overall nothing really besides maybe
Pacific Rim for some of us iron three man Iron
Man three for others, but doesn't seem like to
be a huge overall success It's not something
I think we would look back and think some 2013
is one and that's gonna be like the summer of
1982 that has like hit after hit Anything else
you want to say before we move on to the next
big topic? Is that the box office stuff? Yes.
I'll just wait then. Yeah, no, go ahead and go
with the box office stuff. Okay. So obviously
with the summer box office, the big thing, I
mean, the summer movies, the big thing is box
office. What movie is going to dominate the box
office this year? What are going to be the big
flops? Overall, I we do have we're gonna just
run down the top movies of this year real quick
and if yeah I feel free to chime in if anything
really jumps out to you as a surprise or something
that just seems pretty obvious and the number
one movies it's I think it's a one the number
one movie many people thought was gonna be here
at the beginning and that of course is Iron Man
3 and I'm just going based off domestic I did
not include worldwide box office. I figured that
could be a separate discussion. We can also talk
about but right now just We're just focusing
on domestic and I am in the summer as of right
now. This could also change us When I first made
this it aren't you changed only in a week or
so But it has made four hundred and eight million
dollars a little bit over almost four hundred
and nine Million dollars with a budget of two
hundred million. So it's at this point suddenly
doubled his budget just in the domestic alone
Number two for the summer was actually despicable
meat too, which for me was a little bit of surprise
Didn't think it would go up that high I figured
it would be up there But I thought well when
you have crap like turbo and whatever else came
out Turbo and planes and all that you know what
I like. It's a gem. I like planes rather than
cars Like planes, but oh well that's to each
their own I haven't seen planes yet, so I cannot
chime in on that but despicable me was to with
Three hundred and fifty five million nearly eight
hundred eighty six thousand nine hundred and
fifty dollars with a budget of seventy six million
What's interesting almost tripled its budget
or it made back almost triple the budget? Yeah
And what's interesting about this if you look
at number one and number two is that there's
only as of right now one movie this summer that
has has made over four hundred million dollars,
which is huge drop off compared to last summer
and I believe the summer before when you had
obviously Avengers making a billion dollars you
had Dark Knight Rises making over 400 million
so this summer seems to be like didn't Rises
take in a billion too or no? I I want to say
yes, but I don't know I think so because since
I think I think worldwide overall it did but
yeah domestically Yeah, I was I was I was gonna
say before we jump down here This was gonna say
like this is the first time in a while where
we haven't had a billion dollar box office No,
nothing really even came close in number three
Which is a man of steel which was two and ninety
million seven hundred sixty nine thousand eight
hundred and fifty two dollars The budget of 225
million. So it has a had a bigger budget than
iron man 3 came out a little I know a little
bit a little bit less obviously almost 200 i'm
about 115 million less and For some for manistee
what I find interesting is that depending on
who you talk to some people say it's a massive
success Some people say it was a disappointment
Um to me, I I guess it didn't make as much as
they were hoping for because I think They were
hoping for that billion -dollar box office for
man of steel and they didn't get it And I think
a reason we can tell they're disappointed was
the fact that they went to Batman and Superman
so quickly and the fact they are getting an a
-list star like Affleck tells you a lot I just
think that And everyone knows on the network
that I have a massive heart on for Christian
Bale But I think that head over it. First of
all, I am over it. Trust me First of all, man
of steel anyone thought man of steel was gonna
be a billion dollar movie retarded because like
that Man of Steel was Batman Begins like it had
you I mean Batman Begins didn't make the box
obviously did not make the bank that the Dark
Knight or Dark Knight Rises did not even close
and It was trying to get over all the stigma
from the two move from like Batman and Robin
and Batman forever And that's why it was like
no one was tuning into it, you know, and then
you know Batman Begins was awesome Word of mouth
got out and you know, the next one was crazy
successful not to mention leisure went and killed
himself. I'm sure that didn't hurt You act like
they planned that I'm not no I'm not saying they
planned it I'm just saying it doesn't it doesn't
hurt right it because it's like it's his last
performance We've got to go see it So, you know
people that might not have gone would have gone
and it was it was a thing, right? It was more
than just Batman it was An actor's last role
and it was like a big deal. So anyways And then
they tried to as a side note, then they tried
to cheapen it by saying oh Well, this is his
last official film role But he actually filmed
some other stuff for some other movie that no
one's heard about sense I don't even remember
what that other project was supposed to be. I
know they finished it with another actor Yeah,
there you go. But I think, too, a big reason
I think some people thought Man of Steel was
going to make more than it did was its opening
weekend was pretty large. And then it dropped
significantly the second weekend, maybe a large
part of all the negative word of mouth. And I
think a lot of the haters kind of got hold of
it. And it just did not have that staying power
of an RMN3 or other films. And I do agree that.
I have a feeling even if they didn't go Batman
vs Superman, if they went Man of Steel 2 or what
have you, you probably would see an increase.
Maybe you would get that billion -dollar Superman
movie or something more marketable. Just real
quick, I'm sorry. Jumping to Batman, this is
why I was going to say I have the heart on for
Christian Bale. Jumping to Batman, having to
recast Batman? Just because it's Batman, I don't
think it's good. If it had been Bale, they would
have been guaranteed bank, right? Like having
to do like a new Batman and introduce new care
like new You know a new actor as him and get
people to buy it I mean you're gonna have that
tune -in audience. So there's that but I don't
think it's gonna make as much money as It would
if they had paid bail whatever ridiculous amount
of money it would have taken You know what I'm
saying? I definitely agree and especially losing
also without if they were able to put Nolan's
name on it again I think that would also be a
huge increase too. I do think bail Affleck's
gonna be hard sell for some people so I I don't
think it's gonna get to the point that Batman
Superman movie is gonna be like Avengers level
But because that's a wait and see I mean, it's
hard to say now when it hasn't even started shooting
yet, but right All right moving on to number
four. So so far. I'm in three despicable me to
man of steel number four Maybe probably movie.
I thought would be a little higher necessarily
as monsters University You know, Pixar is usually
the king of summer. This summer, they weren't
so much. They really kind of lost that title
in the last few years. Rightfully so. Exactly.
No lying there, but Monster University came in
at fourth place with $264 ,385 ,381. And I didn't
get a budget for that. I don't know if it wasn't
released or what happened. I know Disney's a
private company, so they're... I don't know.
I couldn't find a budget for that. But my guess
is the budget wasn't that high considering it
is an animated movie. Go ahead, Mike. I don't
understand why Pixar had to put out... Well,
okay, well, technically it's not Pixar for the
second one, but Disney put out two movies so
close together. Well, Planes was supposed to
be direct to video. Right. Well, originally it
was supposed to be theater, then it went to direct
-to -video, and then it went back to theater
because people were like, ooh, we need to see
this. Well, it was always supposed to be direct
-to -video because it was done by their cheap
studio on the station in the Philippines or India
or something like that. The reason I think they
put it in theaters is because they figured, hey,
there's not much competition here. We don't need
to do that much marketing and we can make bank
on it and they I think planes wasn't hugely successful
It wasn't to the level of you know, any Pixar
Disney movie It certainly, you know gave them
a profit and after losing all the money on Lone
Ranger, which we'll get to I'm sure that they
were okay with making some But brave brave and
Monsters University. I was so disappointed by
I brave is nothing but animated Braveheart with
The only problem I had with brave is that it
was a Disney story with Pixar visuals I mean
brave is perfectly watchable, but it's definitely
a Disney story and that's one of the reasons
I hated it And again for me the reason why I
say oh, it's just an animated 21st century Braveheart
is because yes, I've seen the movie I didn't
like the movie, but even before I saw brave Because
I watch Disney Channel sadly I see all these
features of oh how awesome it's gonna be Going
back to Monsters University according to Wikipedia
the budget for that was 200 million. What? Yeah,
that's why I didn't I don't believe Wikipedia
cuz I I don't see it being that high that seems
like an enormous amount for Lone Ranger money.
Yeah, I'd see that's why I in I boxed up from
Simoja, which is pretty official Didn't have
one in so I didn't I don't feel like 200 million
was correct. It just to me seems kind of ridiculous.
The only thing I didn't like about Monsters University
is, you know, something that another movie reviewer
says, is that you already know where the characters
end up. Yeah, that's true. It's very hard to
show them in any kind of peril or in danger.
And actually, the best part of Monsters University,
in my opinion, was the closing montage. and the
short at the beginning, because Pixar shorts
are excellent. I've yet to see Monsters University.
Monsters University, that is one I have missed.
I missed it too. I wanted to see it, but I'm
sorry, Despicable Me 2 was more important to
me than a prequel to Monsters Inc. Yeah, neither
of them were very important to me, unfortunately.
Number five is the one I... did see in theaters,
and that is Fast and Furious 6. And that is a
franchise that seems to just get better with
age. That made $238 million, $675 ,730 with a
budget of $160 million. So a smaller budget than
both Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel, and made not
much less than Man of Steel, only about a little
bit About 50 million less which is pretty pretty
impressive for a franchise that in its sixth
installment But does anybody remember when passing
furious was about to die? Yeah, I thought so.
Yeah, Tokyo drift. Yeah, I thought Tokyo drift
I'm like, oh that franchise is done. Usually
when you see some place go like oh, it's this
city It's like oh, oh that's over with and then
you know, it's just I Fast five brought in a
new life. And then I must say I was not a fan
of that franchise I never saw it. I just I shouldn't
say I wasn't a fan of the franchise I wasn't
a fan of the people who saw Fast and the Furious
and then thought they were in the movie when
they were driving and Had got like that movie
like took over my high school and college Every
one had a part that they're going in this new
direction that they're making it more about A
heist franchise than it is that used to be a
street racing franchise four five and six have
been great Yes, I agree. It's speaking of that's
about fun and that to me was out there that in
Pacific friend both a whole lot of fun and super
psyched for fast and furious seven kids Good
lord. That was one of the best teasers ever All
right, did you hear about the latest casting
news? Yes, Tony John's and church for passage
material seven. Oh, no the other one Oh that
I don't know Kurt Russell. Oh, I did hear that
rumor as well. That's really Because it's snake
why not? I'd rather him be in two minutes Jor
-el What what you said Kurt Russell, what is
he Jor -el Kurt Russell was Jor -el. No, you're
thinking of Russell Crowe Oh. I'm sorry. I'm
thinking of Snake Plissken. Escape to New York.
Oh, yeah. Okay. I imagine, like, he got a thing
on his desk. It's like a post -it note from an
agent. You can either do the Expendables or Fast
and the Furious. And I think you chose the right
one. Me too. Me too. Considering Riggs is in
Expendables 3. And Harrison Ford and Rusty Snipes
and whoever they can, you know... Need whoever
needs a job Yeah, really? That's all that franchise
is turning into whoever needs an action movie
job right now based upon you know, the Stallone's
and Schwarzenegger and Willis's luck with action
movies lately. It seems like they can only be
successful if they team up So, you know, all
right moving on to number six. So at the top
five just to recap real quick I am in three to
speckle me to man of steel to modern use of monsters
University fascinating fury And number six, possibly
a disappointment for some, was Star Trek Into
Darkness, which made $228 ,574 ,111 with a budget
of $227 ,424 ,110. That is a very succinct budget.
It made a thousand bucks more. And considering
the fact that was just re -released in theaters
this past weekend with partnering with World
War Z That I think put it over at the edge just
a little bit and even for now But what's interesting
about Into Darkness though? I know we talked
about when I'm not doing I have foreign box office
But it crushed it in the foreign market unlike
the first Star Trek which didn't do well overseas
for some reason I don't know if it's better than
a cummerbatch or what -have -you, but it's It
did really well overseas. So we're seeing that
being more and more of an increase. I want to
talk about the little more when we get to disappointments.
But yeah, I mean, in the dark, just domestically,
I would say overall was a disappointment. And
that I find surprising. I thought that hype for
that movie was really up there. And it seemed
like a movie a lot of people pointed to as one
of their most anticipated. But that opening weekend
even was not very, very impressive box office
wise. And also with like huge, you know, that
was again one of those movies that Suffered from
a lot of haters and you know, there were some
people who loved it but there was a lot of people
who were like myself like it seems like All three
of us felt it was just kind of meh or okay and
had issues I liked it. But like you just said
it had its issues I mean, I you know, I didn't
feel like I just I liked what I saw but as I
said earlier Wish there was more to it than what
it was. I can always use more bandit cover batch,
too So you're not alone there. Yeah, there's
nothing to do with it I just I like the actors
that make up the new characters for the crew.
That's just teasing you Your day's always better
when you started with a cover batch just I'll
say As we go into the run out this top ten, we're
actually getting to some surprises sir But more
on the positive end at least this one is a positive
for me just because I'm or at least one that
I'm surprised it as well as it did and for number
seven is actually World War Z, which is made
two hundred and seven two hundred seven hundred
and seven days I cannot talk tonight. So what
it ain't just of two hundred million dollars
in a hundred and ninety million exactly so Considering
World War Z was one of the movies that was suffering
from a lot of production delays It had a lot
of negative negative A lot of negative comments
going into that before it came out and it was
to me a surprise hit I did not expect it to be
in the top ten, but it seems I enjoyed it I thought
World War Z was pretty was pretty good. It wasn't
the greatest movie ever. It was not necessarily
It was barely a zombie movie, but it was to me
much more impressive than the trailers let on
but What did you how do you guys feel about World
War Z coming here at number seven? I like World
War Z I haven't seen it. I've seen trailers and
um, you know, everybody gets on me for commenting
on trailers So I'm just not gonna say anything.
I know it's horror. So here that's kind of you
know, against your religion I mean, I like the
religion I like the book World War Z a lot Didn't
really have a long time ago I think I came to
grips with you know, the theatrical version of
a book is never going to match the book So I
kind of just you know, I kind of divorce it and
I divorce my opinion of it and I'm kind of like
well What can they what can they possibly do
with the book and in the tie -ins and I like
that I like the nods that they had to the book
in World War Z if the like the idea that they're
if the plan for the sequel comes through. I'm
interested to see what happens given the way
that this movie wraps up. I wasn't I really wasn't
worried about seeing the movie because I mean,
I like Brad Pitt. I just know it was fun. I honestly
have to say, because we were having conversations
at work about, you know, zombies that run. And.
Because before you know in all we were talking
about was like, you know talk about what we saw
in the trailer and it was like, you know Clearly,
you're all not clearly because I didn't think
it was running zombies in the trailer I thought
because they never showed them up close in the
trailer So I was thinking well, maybe it's just
people scrambling like crazy cattle Trying to
get away from something So I was and we were
doing like a rundown of like movies that actually
have legitimate fast -moving zombies in it and
I couldn't think of that many so um because I
know a lot of people are like the fast moving
zombie thing is so overdone it's overused and
like we're just kind of like there aren't really
that many of them yeah I mean I mean I guess
if you count 20 I know people I get it they're
not zombies but for me whatever the zombies and
it's 28 days later um the new the Get dawn of
the dead had fast zombies But I think I think
we came up with dawn of the dead and the later
resident evil movies had the fast -moving zombies
But we did not count 28 days later because those
are just really angry people Yeah, and I don't
know about though the horde and I'm not sure
about that snow if they had fast zombies or not
But those are getting the aren't big movies.
Yeah, I don't I to me I I'd like the idea of
fast zombies. I mean either one it's fine with
me, but I think some people the Thought that
goes in the zombies sometimes kind of frightens
me and how crazy people get into it. I like zombies
I love the parking dead and what we're see I
look like you I love the book. I absolutely love
the audio book to that too It's if you're at
all if you're a fan of podcasts and you want
to listen to an audio book Listen to what we're
see it has amazing voice actors Martin Scorsese
reads a chapter in the news version of it It's
freaking awesome. But anyway, anything else about
what we'll see before we move on? No, I'm good.
All righty. Again, another big surprise here.
And that is the box office queen that Melissa
McCarthy has grown into as number eight was the
Heat with about $158 million with a budget of
only $43 million. So considering, I mean, it's
a comedy. You always have that breakout comedy
this year and box office wise it seems like it
was the heat I mean, there's a few more that
we can get down to but I I saw the heat I thought
it was passive. It was fine. It I mean, I like
Melissa McCarthy. I think she is funny. I do
like Sandra Bullock. They had good chemistry
I do think it's I don't think it's a movie that's
people are gonna really pay attention to you
on the line it had some moments, but I'm Kind
of shocked by how like Melissa McCarthy also
had identity see if that was one of the bigger
hits this year so far as well. So she seems to
be the, you know, the hot come on when it comes
to comedies. Yeah, we saw the heat. I think that's
mostly just the the Sandra Bullock and, you know,
the female moviegoers is what that was. Yeah,
it's one of those. That movie is the 21st century
female version of bosom buddies. Basically just
had women instead of men in drag. I think, too,
it's a comedy that is, it is an R -rated comedy
that I think, I think with Summer, too, you're
looking for something to go to that you can,
a large group of friends can get into, and The
Heat is kind of that. It's, it's, you know, guys
can like it, girls can like it. I do think that
is a big factor. Like you mentioned, Sandra Bullock,
too, is, there's a lot of people who love her,
and, you know, she's, she has her along with
Mark McCarthy, seems to be a pretty strong name.
All right, moving quickly on to the next one,
which is to me, again, I thought this movie was
going to bomb just because I just didn't think
audiences would really want to see a type of
movie like this in the summer. And that's number
nine, which is The Great Gatsby, which made $145
million was a budget of $105 million. I haven't
seen The Great Gatsby, like I mentioned. I want
to check it out. But I was shocked that it made
this much money. I thought it was going to be
like a huge disaster just because it was supposed
to come out in December of last year. It got
pushed back to the summer. And I don't know.
To me, it wasn't necessarily a summer movie.
And it did really well. And I'm kind of glad
it did well just because I'm glad to see different
movies being successful in the summer so it doesn't
just have to be superhero movie after superhero
movie but how do you feel about why do you think
the great gaspy was actually successful people
oh well one Leonardo DiCaprio um and i think
like i you know people read the book you know
i mean i never read the book in high school but
i know everyone else i for some reason everyone
else i know seems to have read the book in high
school and that's why they all wanted to go see
it because they wanted to see how it stacked
up to the book Yeah, it might have been the first
time ever being able to see Like I don't know
maybe some have read the book but never bothered
to watch because this is a remake, right? So
maybe there was made in the 1970s with Robert
Redford, which is pretty notorious for how bad
it is So maybe they I mean some of these people
may have never have seen that movie and they
you know This is like now they go see this one.
I don't know It's a movie think that like it
definitely was targeted towards younger audiences
with its use of music It's a lot of you know,
jay -z coming onto the trailers and stuff like
that and but it probably will get that older
crowd because again Like you said, it's a book
that has been around forever So a lot of people
do kind of want to see that adaptation on the
big screen let's not forget they also marketed
as the guy that made Romeo and Juliet and I just
had it and I ran out of my mind Moulin Rouge
yes true, so I mean those movies have fans So
I'm guessing they would have gone to see I mean
I didn't care for Moulin Rouge, but I did like
Romeo and Juliet so And I you know I'm gonna
be kind of light on the comments for this and
the next two because I haven't seen them Well,
I can I can talk about number ten which is again
another big surprise there seems to be a lot
like the last three this one maybe even The biggest
and actually this film if you go based upon budget
actually had the highest turnover considering
budget and overall box office and that was the
Conjuring which is made a hundred and thirty
four million dollars with a budget of twenty
million, which is pretty incredible I mean there
seems to be always that horror film that kind
of comes out of nowhere like if it's paranormal
activity or what have you in Lena James one also
had insidious, which is also was hugely profitable
with like a million dollar budget and that did
really well in the box office and the conjuring
did even better. I did see the conjuring and
I honestly was one of the better movies of the
summer for me. I'm not the hugest horror fan
but I thought it was pretty, it was scary, it
was well done, it really felt like a classic
horror film from the 70s with its mood and atmosphere
and it does have, I know it's fascinating if
you're seven, it's a completely different type
of movie. But when you can direct it would be
that well It does have me excited for what? The
director will be doing for fashion if you're
seven because be able to do that much with only
a 20 million dollar budget is pretty impressive
So let me ask you this about the conjuring the
the deeper the deeper Conversation we can have
at a later date, but the conjuring was rated
R And this summer there's been a lot of controversy
about the difference between a rated -r movie
and a pg -13 movie And from people that have
written the articles about the broken rating
system and everything, one of the examples they
used was the conjuring being rated R for being
scary. Not because it's violent or that there's
foul language, but because it's too scary, it
was rated R. Can you, one, can you confirm that
as, because I haven't seen it, can you confirm
that that is actually the case? And two, Um,
can you imagine the box office offices would
have gotten if it had been pg -13? Geez, okay
regarding i'll start with the first question
first regarding our rating. I Yeah, I mean there
is there is very little cursing in that from
what I can remember I don't I don't think the
f -word was ever spoken for or if it was it was
brief and Because it was a movie about this family
and with kids and you know, most of it was language
and was fine for the most part. I mean, there
might have been an exorcism scene, some cursing
there, but nothing to the point of, I would think,
oh, this is our rated movie. Violence -wise,
nothing really that bad. To me, I'm pretty sure
the paranormal films are PG -13. And I didn't
think, if you were just going up ratings version,
that it was anything worse than those. And if
you consider something like, I can't think of
a really violent movie that's... The Wolverine?
The Wolverine, which was at PG -13? Yes. Yes,
that was PG -13. I would say the Wolverine, by
far, is so much more violent than the Conjuring.
Is it scary? Yeah. That to me, it's hard to say
because it's so scary that it's rated R, but
I don't know. You could say that about a lot
of things. I don't disagree with it being rated
R, though, because I don't know if I would say
someone over... That's hard. Like I, I'm not
a fan of writing to begin with. I think the whole
MPA is kind of messed up, but I'm, that doesn't
bother me as much. Like something like the conjuring
getting rated R I, I can kind of understand that
more so than something like the King's speech
getting R because I said the F word a few times.
I think you have more legitimacy in saying the
conjuring. It does kind of bother me something
like the Wolverine is PG -13 when that movie
is pretty violent. There's a, I mean, I know
they cut away and it's a lot of the violence
and. could easily make that movie into an R rated
movie, but yeah and And what was your second
question? I forget. I'm sorry Can you imagine
what the conjuring would have made if it had
been actually rated PG -13? I mean it probably
I mean it could have been nearly two million
I would say because you think of how many people
how many kids teenagers bought? Tickets for other
movies and then once you sneak into the conjuring.
I'm sure tons of them did Or they bought them
at the kiosk. I know they say they're supposed
to check for ID, but I never see one ever do
that. It's not a law. The MPAA is not enforceable.
I have found that out. It's not a government
agency. It's an agency developed by the major
movie studios. There's actually a really great
documentary called, this film is not yet rated,
that goes into the misworkings of the MPAA and
all that craziness. That is good. That does impact
the I mean and that is actually a pretty important
topic regarding this stuff because that is a
huge impact on box office and The R rating versus
PG -13 rating because like you mentioned the
summer doesn't really have many are rated movies
I mean some of the comedies like this is the
end the world's end the heat They are all have
that are reading and some of them. It's like
the heat didn't seem affected by it This is the
end didn't seem affected by it the world's end.
I don't think they are waiting really mattered
It's just not it's it's kind of a niche audience
to begin with but and for the for the next film
and So that was that basically was the top ten
just to recap it real quick. It was was I meant
three Despicable Me 2 Man of Steel Monster University
Fast and Furious 6 Star Trek into darkness World
War Z the heat the great gaspian number 10 is
the conjuring. I do the the top teen here as
well and just some quick ones just we won't go
in depth in these and One one thing that's took
out to me is how much grown -ups to made which
is actually number 11 and that made 130 million
dollars Was the 80 million dollar budget which
a I don't know how when I was to cost 80 million
dollars most most I'm guessing 75 million. It's
Adam Sandler He poured his money into it. He
pours his money into every movie. He does no
matter how good or bad it is I'm saying I'm guessing
75 million went into Adam Sandler's The Wolverine
which is and this could go up because this is
still in theaters in some places Which was number
12, which is 128 million dollars To me which
I that to me is right on expectations I'm nothing
it didn't do nearly as well as more Wolverine
origins Which no one I think expected to because
I think most people thought it was gonna be garbage
which I movie I liked I thought it was good Enjoyed
just the how it was very much It's like a classic
martial arts film. In number 13, another big
surprise, which was Now You See Me, which made
$117 million and did so well, there's now going
to be a sequel. Number 14, which is actually
the biggest movie of August which I mentioned
this on Twitter and and Mike powers corrected
me because I'm like I don't know anyone that
saw we the millers and that movie made a hundred
and fourteen million dollars Which is more than
hangover part three, which only made a hundred
and twelve So which is kind of crazy. So that
movie is doing really well in it for me It's
still under the radar. I haven't seen it But
I think powers you can probably speak more to
it than I can as you have you have seen it Yeah,
it was fun. I enjoyed it. I laughed a couple
times. I mean, it's just a good, it's a good
date movie. I mean, I think that's one of the
reasons why it's doing so well. I mean, it's
still like at my theater in particular, it's
still in one of the largest houses. And usually
those movies get rotated out of the large house
really quick. And it's been in the large house
since it opened. I mean, they're not selling
it out, but they're still doing a sizeable amount
of business on it. Okay, any so any anything
else we wanted to say about the top movies before
we move on to the the disappointments of the
summer Can the hangover franchise be dead now,
please? I think I think it pretty much is unless
you see like it does the American pie route where
they say they you know They kind of do the direct
to DVD movies like the hangover when it's a different
cast and different people and whatnot But yeah,
I think I think a hangover part three the cap
on that series Didn't nearly do as well as I
hoped it it it barely made its money back. So
I think hangover is kind of over done with Can
I tackle the disappointments, please I need something
to do All right. Yes, let's move on to the big
thing this summer probably the biggest story
of 2000 summer 2013 was the huge amount maybe
hugest hyperbole, but there was a good amount
of 100 million dollar plus, 200 million dollar
plus movies that failed at the box office. So
Mike, I will set you free and what did you have
to say? Hang on, hang on, hang on. Can we just
preface this with failed domestically? Yes, domestically
failed. That's what I wanted to talk about. It's
based off of the US box office and budget. It's
not based off of worldwide. Number one that failed
and I still want to see this regardless of its
failings our IPD the budget for that was a hundred
and thirty million opening weekend it got twelve
just north of twelve million the total box office
for the US was Just under thirty three million
dollars. Well, it's still in theaters, too And
yeah, just so you know Mike this this isn't in
any type of order. This is just the no I know.
Yeah, I know turbo DreamWorks is latest Travesty
seems like they can't make a good movie unless
it's how to train your dragon sequels or animated
series or Shrek movies We don't know that how
to train your dragon 2 is good I'm so just I'm
just saying that I just spent the better half
of 2012 and this year Well, actually all of 2012
going through majority of dream works as films
up to flushed away and Outside of Shrek in the
original how to train your dragon. Most of them
are just duds What that's my personal opinion
but the thing about RPG turbo and Mike I know
you have Let me get the numbers out of the way
really quick for Turbo. Turbo had a budget of
$135 million. Oh my god. The opening weekend
was just north of $21 million and the total box
office for the U .S. was just under $79 million.
What's interesting about R .P .D. and Turbo was
I know you have a negative hard -on for Ryan
Reynolds, and how both of them... He's in both
of them. He's in both of them, and they both
failed on the same weekend, which... But the
thing is with R .I .P .D., I did not like...
For me, the reason why I want to see that movie
is two, well, threefold. The Hot Chick, Jeff
Bridges, and the guy that plays... one of the
avatars what's his name the Chinese guy he's
hilarious as much as you think okay but they
get things right you say Jeff Bridges with a
hot chick no okay no that's not what I said all
right up next is the Lone Ranger tanto don't
go to town they're gonna beat you up again Had
a budget of 215 million with it being a Jerry
Brockheimer production. I don't see why I Well,
I see why it had that amount of budget. I don't
see why it didn't make Any part of that back
the opening weekend? I just got under 30 million
at the box office and then total US box office
was just under 88 million dollars And that one
is also not doing well overseas as well I mean
the West Raves has never really been a trial
overseas to begin with You asked like why that
didn't do well. I mean, I know Harley Hammer
and Armory Hammer and Johnny Depp both came out
and said the critics kind of are the ones to
blame for Failing as much as it did and I don't
necessarily agree with that. I think for one
it's the Lone Ranger It's not a come on. It's
not like a name that really resonates with many
people anymore it I mean, a budget that big for
a western is kind of crazy. And Jerry Brockhammer's
name, I don't think has kind of been sullied
with the failure of the last, I mean, I guess...
No, it hasn't. That's why I'm saying I don't
understand why this wasn't a huge... this should
have been a huge success for him and his production
company. Well, yes, they've been successful financially,
but critically and overall fandom, it seems like
most people have kind of... that name doesn't
hold weight with a lot of people. Well, if he
eventually get around to doing national... Treasure
3, maybe. That'll do it for him. Johnny Depp,
he was a huge draw, but I think he is wearing
thin on a lot of people too. Last year he had
Dark Shadows, which was a failure, and The Taurus,
which was a failure. He was usually one of the
few people that was still left that would bring
people into the studio. Not the studio, but the
movie theater, and I don't think that happened.
I mean, I wasn't a fan of Lone Ranger. I think
people kind of destroyed it more so than it needed
to be destroyed Like they went after that thing
like it was like the worst thing ever created
and I don't think it's nearly that bad and I
think it was that little hanging fruit that People
just attacked because they needed something to
attack in some way so kind of in some way I agree
with what army hammer and Johnny Depp did and
that people are overly nasty to that just because
it It was the perfect storm. It had a trouble
production. It was over budgeted. It had Johnny
Depp in and it was like, I think critics were
ready to kind of just pounce on it and they did.
And then when it didn't do well, it just, it
just added fuel to the fire. But I don't know.
I don't, to me it was, I enjoyed, I didn't overall
find the movie successful, but I enjoyed that
more than I enjoyed the last two Pirates movies.
I enjoyed Lord Ranger 2 and I don't I mean I
feel bad for Armie Hammer and Gore Verbinski
because I like both of them. Up next is the real
American hero White House Down. Made a budget
of 150 million the opening weekend 24 million
just just north of that. The total box office
domestically is 72 million 425 thousand dollars
in change. um everyone keeps saying this should
have been gi Joe retaliation good god no or was
it it was either that or um oh die the die you're
mixing them up your olympus has fallen should
have been die hard oh Okay, I think this suffered
one of those one of those White House movies
should have been die -hard I think I think that
is what killed White House down was the fact
that it'll just fall and kind of stole a lot
of its thunder It was better. I thought what
else it was better. I do agree I think what else
Olympus has fallen was a better movie and we
talked about Jerry Brockheimer and then you have
you know Ron Emmerich who? Was usually even in
his bad film scenes and do well like 2012 was
Was a huge not a huge success, but it was successful
and you know, this had Jamie Foxx eating tatum
But and to this is another one that was a really
one of the more fun films from like it would
felt like a throwback movie from the 90s and
I think it did It was killed for a it was just
overkill because I think we saw this It did feel
like another die -hard movie and we already had
like two die -hard movies up to up to that point
But yeah, I'm not surprised right house down
Wasn't successful. It just I don't know like
Roland Emmerich is a hit miss for me and I enjoyed
White House down a little bit but it I Was waiting
for a giant alien ship to come overhead and just
boom blow it up That's a sequel and they do talk
about in the pen to say in that movie because
yeah Like as in continuity or like as a movie
that exists in the movie It's like a movie that
they'd like this is the White House. You saw
it probably when it was destroyed in Independence
Day or something Okay, okay. Yeah, it's not like
let's hope it's not continuity Will Smith doesn't
show up or anything like that and talk about
punching ET in the face Oh, but you know what
I I didn't see this one, but I saw I caught the
end like the the very end Where with with the
flag? Okay, that kind of that's right up there
with the gymnastics in Lost World Yeah It was
pretty sad you want to talk about 9 -eleven imagery
White House son was full of it in full of it
in wrong wrong ways. Yeah Up next is after earth.
It had a budget of a hundred and thirty million
dollars. The opening weekend was just Over 27
million the total domestic gross is just over
60 million Can we please stop doing these post
-apocalyptic movies all in one summer? I mean,
holy crap that was not this movie's problem No,
I understand that but I'm saying like you've
got after earth. You've got the world's end and
this is the end and All this other, all these
post -apocalyptic world movies and it's like
crap. Well, okay. In fairness, World's End and
This is the End, it's not the same as After Earth
and Oblivion. No, no, no, I know, but I'm just
saying that in general, the sub -genre of post
-apocalyptic films, can we please stop putting
all of them out in one summer? I mean, I guess,
I mean, that could be a reason. Why I mean it's
summers have kind of been full of that for a
long time. I mean yourself at least even stuff
like that I think after Ruth though, I think
was dead on arrival for a few reasons a M. Night
Shyamalan even if the fact that they They tried
to hide his name on this like I'm surprised didn't
try to hack IMDB and remove it and put someone
else's name on and put a pseudonym or something
and to I think everyone saw that it just you
know, people called it nepotism the movie it
just it just felt like Will Smith trying to make
his son into a star and I haven't seen after
earth I haven't seen the karate kids remake of
his son. I have seen the kid in Was a pursuit
of happiness. He was fine in that but he was
like four years old So it's not hard for a four
-year -old to kind of look cute. Um, but I To
me after earth suffered for a lot and just also
looked really it was that movie just felt I Don't
know. It just it did not look very interesting
to me in any way shape or form Up next is the
internship with a budget of 58 million the opening
weekend was just north of 17 million and the
total domestic gross so far for the box office
is just north of 44 million I did not see this
remind me what this movie is. This is with Will
Wilson Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn. They're
the ones that go to Google and try to Oh, yeah,
I remember the trailer now. I mean, box office
wise, this is not nearly a huge disappointment
compared to something like After Earth, but it's
a big disappointment in the fact that, you know,
people were hoping this would make Wedding Crashers
money or at least come close and it really didn't.
I mean, it didn't make its money back. And so
I think that's why it's been it's on the disappointment
list. Yes. Next up on the disappointment list,
I also hope this is the end of this franchise
to kick ass to. Budget of 28 million opening
weekend was just north of 13 million total domestic
was just Barely north of 24 million dollars.
Oh my god. I hope it's not over. I Hope this
stupid. Hey anybody can be a superhero. Have
you seen the movies? I've seen the first one.
It was horrible. I I love the first one the second
one I I enjoyed you I people were killing on
it, but I thought it was it was fun I don't think
it's I don't know if it's coming back I was surprised
the second one was made just because the First
one didn't do as well as they were hoping it
would would I mean it's 24 million now But this
is still in theaters some places so it could
still make its money back And it's probably gonna
be a huge on DVD, but I know I I loved kick -ass
one. I loved it a lot I thought that movie was
great. It's a terrible very I mean Chloe rats
was great. I mean kick -ass to I think suffered
from the fact that I think kick -ass wasn't very
interesting in it But I loved hit girl and I
loved everything else that was in that movie.
So Up next on the disappointment list financially
at least thank God Pacific Rim total budget 190
million opening weekend 37 just north of 37 million
total domestic gross Just north of 99 million
dollars. So basically domestically it only made
back 20 % of its budget How does it make only
back 20 % when it's over when it's over half
I Mean it's over. It's made almost a hundred
million on a hundred ninety million dollar budget
Eh, whatever. That's not 20%. I'm glad it's in
the disappointment category, because hopefully
we won't get a sequel. We are getting a sequel.
Put it through Kickstarter or something. No,
we're getting a sequel. And the reason I didn't...
Mike mentioned this to point out this is only
domestic, and it's a good reason to point this
out, because specific RAM is kicking butt overseas.
Well, that's because it's a Godzilla movie with
Transformers and G .I. Joe suits, so... You are
so wrong. I know, right? First of all, we can't
just move on from that. Yes, we can. Red 2, Bruce
Willis' other movie this year. $84 million budget.
Opening weekend, $18 million. Total domestic
gross, $52 million. I didn't see Red 1, so I
have no interest in Red 2. Was surprised that
movie cost as much as it did and I it wasn't
really marketed All that well that came out like
in a weekend with a lot a lot else came out that
it was just a bunch of movies that didn't do
well, but Yeah, I mean I enjoyed red one, but
I was surprised red 2 was released in the summer
it read to comes to me It feels more like a January
or February release not necessarily a summer
release and I think that's what kind of killed
it It was just was a release in the wrong month
Yeah Tyler Perry presents insert title here.
Oh, I'm sorry people's The total budget was 15
million opening weekend just north of 4 million
total domestic just over 9 million I don't watch
Tyler Perry movies. I just not my cup of tea.
I don't dislike them But at the same time I don't
like them either So I have no interest in this
at all. Yeah, I mean This is on a disappointment
list a cuz Tyler Perry named it does have weight
and it does tend to you know His movies do really
well they they appeal to certain audiences that
most of you know Hollywood kind of ignores and
I was kind of hoping people's would do well not
because I'm a Tyler Perry fan, but I'm a Craig
Robertson fan and I find him hilarious so I was
hoping that you know for his sake and we could
see him in more things and be the lead in more
things but It just was kind of again. It just
didn't too well that i don't i mean that's not
a movie that really markets the movie before
you begin with so i really can't speak on why
it didn't do well but it again it's just one
of those another example of a disappointment
to summer and the final one on the disappointment
list for the summer of 2013 didn't this just
come out the mortal instruments yes it did and
there's how is it already on the disappointment
list if it just well kick ass just came out too
so actually kick ass came out after mortal instruments
did it really Yeah, and it's on the disappointment
list a because it costs 60 million dollars and
say we also live in a world where your opening
weekend and is everything Yeah, that's true.
And if you don't do well in your opening weekend,
if you usually don't make around, you know at
least half or 75 to 25 percent of your budget
on your opening weekend. You're not going to
do well in this opening week was a little over
nine million dollars and it's only made up to
20 nearly like a little bit under 25 million
dollars and there's currently shooting a sequel
for this because they a lot of people thought
it would be the next Twilight series and they
were hoping for it to be I thought that was gonna
be the host there's been a lot of movies that
try to be the next Twilight and a lot of people
thought this would be it because I guess I've
never read the books I don't know much about
them But the more mortal instruments of city
of bones, I guess is a pretty popular book, but
it just again didn't do well didn't it just Didn't
kind of hit hit it as much as I thought it would
and who knows if that sequel is gonna happen
now and might still come out But as of right
now, it's already shooting so I guess it's going
to but it just shows you that maybe we studios
won't count their chickens before they're hatched
in the future and it's assumed something's gonna
do well when You know, it might feel like At
least they didn't shoot for the moon with the
budget and I feel like I was going to preview
this movie and then I totally forgot it was getting
previewed and I just went to bed but Mortal instruments
the guys that I know at work that did preview
it said that there wasn't any it wasn't like
a bad movie But it didn't live up to its potential
So maybe that's kind of what they're banking
on here. I don't know I mean, maybe the sequel
will do amazing. We've seen it happen before
where the I mean something like the Austin powers,
which wasn't that great in that the seek the
original didn't do that Well, but it did great
on home video and then the sequels or you know
when they hit theater So, I mean that's also
a potential as well. So that man begins as well.
We talked about that earlier so before we move
on any I did want to comment on Pacific Rim go
back to that real quick and the reason I wanted
to is because This shows you what we're seeing
a lot right now is the fact that the foreign
box office is meaning more and more and domestic
is meaning less and less. We're gonna get a Pacific
Rim sequel because of China in a lot of ways,
because of other countries and China is obviously,
it's a huge thing right now that China is growing
as a market. I mean, Iron Man 3, making scenes
just for the China audience. and in that market
is a huge, you know, huge consideration when
people are making movies because They only lens
from China only allow certain films. So something
like Pacific Rim obviously ominously appeal selling
Because it takes lots from the that culture to
begin with necessarily China, but a lot of Japan
I'm and what and what not but it's also set in
their backyard Exactly. True. True. And it also
is showing You know, it's I'm thinking it's kind
of great that we something like the Wolverine
to where you're seeing movies not just full of
white people not to get like into a race thing
here, but Seeing seeing that you are seeing,
you know a foreign influences in a good way I
think it was for Wolverine. It makes sense because
that goes into his history and it's always been
a part of One Wolverine's history and something
like Pacific Rim again, I mean that's hugely
influenced by the you know Japanese and manga
and all that great stuff So it makes sense to
so and in some ways it's there's some negatives
to it because you get something like Iron Man
3 that just to horns things in just to try to
You know cater to a certain audience went to
the detriment of the film when those scenes aren't
even directed the person who made the movie but
then you get good things like I'm hoping we get
another Pacific Rim because of this so I think
that's a huge positive and we're gonna just see
more and more of that where you know domestic
audiences we seem to be going to the theaters
less and less yes I know the summer of 2013 was
the most you know had the highest overall box
office total but When you consider the increase
of ticket prices and stuff like that, I don't
know if that means as much as it does I mean,
I always wondered why with movie theater worth
movies you go based upon How mo made and not
how many tickets were sold compared to something
like music where you go based upon a number of
albums I was always I'd be curious if To change
what that would stack with inflation and for
ticket prices and whatnot. So I'm always curious
about what now It's pretty evident that we aren't
nearly as going to the theaters as much as we
used to well, you know It's all on how you skew
the numbers right because everyone We can be
done when I'm done with this if you guys want
but or you know go to whatever but the um You
know, it's like when a new Call of Duty comes
out and it's the highest grossing, you know media
thing ever But then you realize you have to pay
$60 to get it You know, it's like it's just all
in how you skew the numbers So it's like is it
seven dollars a ticket and like so many people
go or is it $60 a copy and ten million people
buy it So you make six hundred million dollars,
you know, it's like yeah That's how you skew
it to make the you know, the stockholders happy
basically. It's like hey So cuz I mean the big
thing this summer was there I mean we went over
a bunch of failures and our disappointments I
should say domestically and I'm sure there's
more that we didn't cover but anything else anyone
has to say about the the overall box office before
we move on nope nope okay well we're going to
take a little bit of break here and when we come
back we're going to get into the other side of
things we talked about the box office and of
course besides box office there is the other
side of the coin which is the critics what do
the critics think what was successful which was
what were the critics what did the critics love
what did they hate we'll get into that shortly
right after this break is this thing on Oh, goody!

and we make fun of Chuck. Right, and we, hey,
again? Come on, Chuck. We're just kidding, kinda.
Sometimes Chuck makes fun of himself. Right,
and we... Okay, seriously, this is just getting
ridiculous now. It's What's On Joe Mind, every

something about Transformers, can I? Good grief.
What about sports? Yeah, that's alright. All
right, and welcome back to Mware as we are kind
of going into the Rotten Tomatoes scores of the
summer movie Releases and to see what the critics
loved and what they hated You know Rotten Tomatoes
as many people know it's the website that collects,
you know, the the movie reviews of the critics
and puts it's a nice little score an average
and you know decides what that percentage is
Anything above 60 % is obviously fresh anything
below is rotten So what's kind of interesting
here is what movies we're going to touch upon,
mainly the top big budget movies. We're going
to briefly touch upon the more limited movies,
but just a little bit. The first thing we're
going to talk about are the best films of the
summer, at least in the critics' eyes. Again,
this is the Rotten Tomatoes rating, so this doesn't
necessarily mean a huge amount, but it's kind
of a good parameter of... You know what people
were thinking this past summer and there's actually
a few surprises here for me the number one What's
really surprising is what's that number one and
so I think in a good way I kind of agree with
this and that is number one movie this summer
based upon the critics rating was actually The
world's end Edgar writes the movie with a with
a rotten tomatoes rating of 90 % What's interesting
about that is that means there's only one movie?
The critics rated this year for summer blockbusters.
That was 90 % or above which is a little bit
crazy Kind of shows you what they thought of
this summer when the fact that you only have
one thing in the 90s Number two, which is probably
what I'm going to talk about a little bit more
which is to me Mike Powers mentioned this in
the break But probably the most surprising is
number two is actually Star Trek into darkness,
which is 87 % So that to me is not something
Would have guessed that considering, you know,
if you read Twitter or anything like that. It
seems like that movie is not nearly as Loved
by fans as it seems to be by critics. Yeah, and
usually fans will hit this site and drive that
score down Well, that's metacritic that does
that has that problem but Yeah, I was surprised
about Into Darkness. World's End doesn't really
surprise me all that much because I think even
for a critic, I think the base story of the world's
end taps into something that's very easily relatable
for people our age. And, you know, Edgar Wright
is a respected director, and I mean, you know,
Hot Fuzz and Shonda the Dead were both critically
adored as well. They both had, you know, they
were in the 90s too. I was more surprised that
that was the only... in the 90s, it just seemed
a little bit surprising to me. Coming in at number
three, a little bit of a surprise, and this was
a huge success both selfless -wise and also critically,
and that was The Conjuring, which came in at
86%. You know, horror films, they aren't always
adored by critics. They kind of, you know, paranormal
activity, they tend to, you know, be wishy -washy,
but The Conjuring was, seems to be a huge hit.
All across the board and coming in at number
four We talked about movies that are about the
end of the world and it's another movie about
the end of the world And that is this is the
end which coming in came in at 84 % I really
I didn't find I didn't find this is the end funny.
I did enjoy it I didn't love it nearly as much
as I seemed like everyone else did and I thought
the world's end was a far superior movie But
didn't else see this is the end. I did Michael
Cera was the crown jewel of that movie That's
true. That is probably one of the best that has
happened this entire summer. And then, as we
get to number five, what's interesting is that
it already drops down to the 78%. I don't put
a huge lot of stock in Rotten Tomatoes, but to
me it just shows you that when you have your
top five and you're already down to almost 25
% of the critics don't like something, shows
you that maybe this summer wasn't the greatest
in the world. And that is Iron Man 3, which is
number five at 78%. So just looking at the top
five real quick, do we think the critics got
it right, got it wrong? What do we think? I mean
probably the number one is right. I've heard
nothing but good things about the world's end.
I don't, okay, what people, what at least I didn't
realize at first, but I know now. What most people
might not realize is the New York Times has several
different bestseller lists that they go by. And
I think that's what Rotten Tomatoes needs to
have is top films by genre. I don't see The Conjuring
being the number third film of the entire summer
at all. It's because the only reason it's not
is because I don't... care or I like or dislike
the film, it's horror. I wish that these top
film lists would be by genre versus... It's just
weird to me to see a damn horror movie that isn't
like a Freddy or a Jason or Mike Myers. I mean,
that's like putting... Oh, what was that stupid
franchise? Crap, it's like putting paranormal
activity in the top 10. That's just like what
we talked about back with the box office results.
That's just how do you want to skew your numbers?
Do you want to do several different generalists
or do you want to see how it stacks up against
everything and that's what this list is? I mean,
you can probably sort it by genre, but we've
got the list of. Yeah, no, I understand that
I'm just saying that I Brown Tomatoes does have
it has like a summer report card where it puts
every movie that came out this summer and I did
kind of Did split it into two because I just
I took took out the bigger films and made it
in their own list So yeah, I mean I guess you
can use it any way you want and the thing with
these movies is they're not related to each other
It's not like they're saying this no I understand
that I just to me when I see any any horror movie
in a top ten for For critics, it just weirds
me out. That's all. All right. So going on real
quickly to the next. Number six, which is Monsters
University, which slightly baked out another
big animated movie, Despicable Me 2. Monsters
University at 78%. Despicable Me 2, 76%. And
coming in a little bit after that. Pacific Rim
again 72 % so maybe that was overall Enjoyed
by critics for the most part me 72 % It's pretty
solid score. But again didn't do that wasn't
that successful. It was really high for a while,
too. Yeah, and They kind of the haters kind of
that wasn't nothing 80s high 80s 90s and they
kind of went down What's interesting so far?
I guess this Pacific Rim At number eight is probably
the only movie so far that we've got to that
was actually a disappointment at the box office.
I mean, yes, Star Trek and the Dark Isles and
whatnot, but considering all the disappointments
we went over, it took up to number eight to actually
get to a movie that wasn't successful both critically
and financially overall. Again, moving on to
number nine, which was a huge surprise. We didn't
talk about this in box office wise. Total number
wasn't that great, but considering the budget,
which is number nine, which is Lee Daniels, The
Butler, which was critically at 73%, but also
seems like there's a lot of Oscar buzz about
The Butler. I have not seen it yet. I just did
not have any desire. I had the opportunity to
see this, and I ended up seeing The Grandmaster
instead, because it's a better movie. And I shouldn't
say that, but yeah, that's another movie that
it's kind of a lot of people are comparing it
to the help of a few years ago, that this summer
is the help. So a lot of Oscar buzzer for forest
here and maybe even Oprah because you know, she
needs another thing to put on her shelf Really?
Have it have anyone's has anyone seen the butler?
No, I have not Okay, I think again. It's that
to me wasn't when I needed to rush out and see
in theaters and then running out the top ten
With was Alicia which was that 69 %? So just
you know, 9 % above making it fresh and that
to me Not that surprising, but I guess that's
considered a huge disappointment if you compare
it to District 9, which was loved by so many
people, it was nominated for Best Picture, and
Elysium, for a lot of people, was a disappointment.
I guess overall for me, it would have been disappointing
if you just compare it to District 9, but on
its own, I thought it was successful. And then
quickly, just the... Just other ones of note
the Wolverine which was at 68 % Maybe what is
that triple of the origin score of what was that
negative three of the first Wolverine movie?
Wow I was just being facetious there. I don't
really think I don't know what the score was
But I'm pretty sure it was you know in the teens
at the best and then Fast and Furious. Shouldn't
those two be? Mixed around shouldn't Wolverine
be number 12. That was based the the Wolverine
was number 11 Because it had more I don't know
why tomatoes does it but some depending on the
score is rated higher on the report card then
fashion if you're six which had 69 % because
the Wolverine had more had more and more Yeah,
okay, and then just quickly World War Z 75 is
60 % and then the heat 65 then epic surprisingly,
which was actually the top 15 financially until
We the we are the rhythm alias pumped it out.
So Overall that was the top 15 movies and you
what you'll see there is there is a lot of similarity
between both the disappointments and the overall
critics overall successful films, but yeah, so
Anything on there that jumps out to anyone that
we think got no way higher score way lower score
didn't deserve start drinking to darkness Yeah,
that's that's too high if I was as a professional
critic if I was without any bias if I was gonna
make this list I would put Star Trek and The
Conjuring down to probably 8 and 9 move Iron
Man 3 and Despicable Me 2 up to higher you know
maybe have Iron Man 3 at 4 and Despicable Me
2 at 5 and I would just basically move it all
around to have Star Trek and The Conjuring not
be the top Two and three slot at all the rest.
I'm fine with and what an epic I mean, I haven't
even heard outside of Consistent commercials
of it coming out. I haven't even really heard
anything about that stupid movie. No me either
and what's interesting What's not on this list
is you know man of steel which was yeah, which
was a little bit I think that was 18 or 19, but
I didn't put it on here and I agree I think Star
Trek in the darkness is 87 percent. I don't know.
Maybe the critics are feeling Generous for that.
I'm not sure but I Would agree and I would probably
put Pacific Rim a lot higher. But again, this
is just percentages So it's hard to kind of play
with those and I But overall, I mean, there's
nothing that stands out to me. That was horribly
bad or anything I think it was overrated per
se maybe the ever feeling that movie is gonna
be a little bit overrated, but I haven't seen
it yet. So I don't feel it's fair for me to say
that so Alright, just real quickly. I just What
that was not including where the limited releases
and this summer I didn't want to talk about a
little bit because this summer to me Was full
of a lot of amazing smaller films. There was
a ton of them and What's great about smaller
films too is the use of video on demand and how
much that's increasing and how a lot of smaller
films are Now available, you know on your TV
and don't even have to go to see them None of
these per se but some of these I did see in theaters,
but overall just quickly the number one movie
If you include everything that came out was actually
Before Midnight, which was the third film in
the Before trilogy, which I thought of too was
fantastic. One of my favorite films of the year
so far. Mud, with sorry, Matthew McConaughey,
which just recently came to theaters and both
of those had 98%. And again, two. two really
great movies. Food Frills Station, which to me
is actually my favorite film so far this year,
which was, you talk about movie, that type of
movies, and that was at 94%. With limited releases,
you also have fewer critics reviewing them, so
their scores are a little skewed, and talk about
playing with numbers, and that happens here now
as well. Number four is Frances Ha, at 93%. number
five spectacular now 92 percent and it takes
to number six until we actually get one of the
bigger releases which is the world's end at 90
percent and number seven is woody allen's latest
film blue jasmine at 89 percent what's interesting
about that is that that was actually in the high
90s until last week when it went open wide and
it dropped out significantly and then again number
eight Star Trek in the darkness number nine the
card during and number ten the way way back Which
is I think also coming to DVD very shortly I
know a lot of those movies you may not have heard
of people may not have heard of but I To me that
was one sometimes the best thing she can try
to go out and find I would if you're out there
you have not seen mud Definitely track it down.
It's on home media right now. It's a really great
summer movie It's to me if you're a fan of something
like stand by me, you think you'll appreciate
something like that. So Alright, and now lastly,
before we move on to the closing, just the bombs
of this year. The worst - Yay, I get to do something
again! The worst films of 2013 according to Rotten
Tomatoes, at least summer -wise. Mike, take it
away. I gotta really look up Ethan Hawkes by
Filmography, because The Getaway was the first
film I had heard of him doing since probably...
Assault on Precinct 13. Well, what's interesting
is he's also in Before Midnight, which is the
highest rated movie of the summer. All right,
so lowest score is The Getaway with 2%. Paranoia
with 4%. Grown Ups 2 with 7%. Wow, Adam Sandler
fans, damn. RIPD with 11%. After Earth with also
11%. The Smurfs 2 with 12%. I can't believe that
even got 12%. Holy crap. Hangover 3 with 19%.
Jobs with 25%. I thought critics would like that
a little more. Kickass 2 with 29%. That's not
surprising at all since the franchise sucks.
And the Lone Ranger with 30%. Wow. Can't wait
to see what the winter numbers are gonna be like
Yeah, I mean, I mean nothing really hugely surprising
there, I mean I guess Kick -ass to I guess is
considered disappointment But that movie is kind
of a hard sell for critics because it's so violent
and and whatnot you mentioned jobs Yeah, that
is kind of surprising. It was that bad, but I
had no expectations with that. I mean I think
Steve Jobs does not seem like something that's
all that appealing and besides that I mean leaving
afterwards of course that was going to be horrible
r .a .p .d. that just looked bad so nothing really
here that for animals too i'm surprised it made
seven percent i thought it would be you know
more than that so um regarding jobs i bought
astin kutcher as jobs um you know the more i
see the trailer the more i i see him as as as
you know a fictional version of steve jobs i
mean They do a really smart thing in the movie
where they open with the Steve jobs that the
More mainstream audience knows like the older
Steve jobs they open with the introduction of
the iPod and it's eerie How much like because
I've seen videos of the iPod introduction. I've
seen that keynote and it's eerie how Well, he
did and then from there They go way back to like
the beginning, like not necessarily the beginning
of his life, but him in college. Yeah, him in
college with was and starting out. Yeah, that's
basically the beginning of it. And then they
move forward from there. The problem is I and
my wife was completely lost most of the time.
And myself, I wouldn't know what was happening
most of the time if I had not read the biography
that came out after he died. Because I saw I
haven't so I'm sorry to cut you off. I haven't
seen jobs yet But like I said, I've seen the
trailer enough times that I do want to see the
film. I saw the Netflix on -demand By a biography
special one last thing that came out a couple
of years ago And as soon as I saw that and I
saw this trailer I'm like, oh, so they're just
doing a fictionalized version of one last thing
It's not even that like it's it's because of
the way that the movie was told it's it was the
director went around and interviewed people that
work with jobs and so the movie is like jobs
is the center of the movie right but he the all
the scenes are from the perspective of the other
people in the scene so you don't really get an
insight into him you just get how people interpreted
him and so it jumps it like the first half of
the movie makes a lot of sense and then just
starts you skip Years, and you don't under it's
like you don't understand what happened And there's
a lot of stuff that gets cut out because Steve
becomes a very private person And he wasn't close
to people that he you know he wasn't able to
get interviews that were were With people that
were close to Steve at that time So there's just
gaps that end up forming in the movie, and then
it just kind of ends, but I bought Ashton Kutcher
As Steve Jobs, I'm more curious to see who Sony
gets to play jobs in Aaron Sorkin's movie So
yeah, I mean I guess I shouldn't judge that based
off the trailer So yeah, I mean if he if he's
good at that, that's that's pretty positive I'm
there with you too. I'm the Aaron Sorkin doing
Doing that that story. I think was something
I'm far more excited in and I don't know who
they'll get but I pretty much adore anything
Aaron Torkin does so I'm pretty sure I'm just
gonna have to like it just by nature. Anything
else anyone wanted to talk about before we move
on to the before we take a little break here?
No I think that's it I mean the the critics are
what the critics are I don't I put stock into
what my friends think some of the time But I
also, you know, have my own opinions on movies.
Like, getaway, I'll give it a Netflix. You know,
I'll watch it eventually. RIPD, again, I'll watch
it eventually. But there are some that I just
would never even... The only problem I have with
RIPD is that the villain's motivations aren't
clear. And that was very weird for movies nowadays,
where usually you get both sides of the story.
RIPD is very much told from the good guy's side
and you don't get any interaction with the villains
unless the good guys are in the scene with them.
So it's weird to only get half of a story in
a movie, but I did like it. Haven't seen it.
I mean I was I was talking on it, but I again
I shouldn't do the whole dog on something I haven't
seen but I I actually had that on my five top
five more anticipated until I saw the trailer
just because I thought the concept seemed interesting
and I'm still gonna watch it because I Am like
that and pretty much have to see everything that
comes out. So hopefully it is good Seems to be
a theme this summer a lot of fun films Maybe
not a lot of great films and like Mike said,
I mean Ron tomatoes is interesting I think people
get too caught up with what the score is and
that why people vote the way they do and I think
it's good to kind of go on there and see what
people think but I think also read the reviews
and see why people love a movie not just they
gave it a positive review because if maybe they
appreciate something about film that you don't
in a different way or maybe there's something
that appeals to them that wanted to you so I
think It's interesting to kind of look at it
in this way, like it's like a report card of
the summer movie season to see what was positive
and what was negative, but is the brown tomatoes
going to be the be -all and all? No, definitely
not, but it's a tool that you can use and you
can use it the way you see fit, but it's an interesting
way to kind of get a quick overview of the summer.
All right, so that's pretty much we're gonna
take a little break here and we're gonna just
give a final overview of the summer movie season
before we Let you all go and get all set for
the you know fall movie season. So see you in
a bit It's impossible Lois could never have Superman's
baby. Do you think her fallopian tubes can handle
this sperm? I guarantee blows the load like a
shotgun right through her back. What about her
wound? Do you think it's strong enough to carry
his child? He's an alien, for Christ's sake.
His Kryptonian biological makeup is enhanced
by Earth's yellow sun. If Lois gets a tan, the
kid could kick right through her stomach. Only
someone like Wonder Woman has a strong enough
uterus to carry his kid. The only way he could
bang regular chicks is with a Kryptonite condom.
That would kill him. Hello, pop culture connoisseurs.

Before we let you go and before we say goodbye
to the summer of 2013, we're just going to kind
of talk about our favorite and least favorite
thing that happened this summer. This is kind
of a wide open topic where we can really choose
anything movie related that happened and kind
of give everyone an idea of what we can talk
about. I guess I'll just start by talking about
personally the favorite thing that happened to
me this summer regarding movies and overall.
And I kind of touched about this a little bit,
and that was just the increase of video on demand.
I mean, I'm going to risk sounding like a little
bit pretentious here and a little bit of a movie
snob, but bear with me for a moment. I love huge
summer blockbuster films, and I love Pacific
Rim, all that great stuff. But I also enjoy smaller
films. I also enjoy just something that will
take its time and kind of be willing to be small
and intimate and all that great stuff. This summer
was full of a lot of great movies that came out
on video on demand. Like that stigma of being
released on video on demand has kind of been
gone and you're seeing great things like, you
know, the director of Drive, Wending Left End
came out with Only God Forgives, something like
Hell Baby with a comedy by the guys who did Bring
Down 9 -1 -1, Prince Avalanche by David Gordon
Green who did, you know, Pineapple Express and
a few other films. There's an abundance of really
great movies that you can get just from your
couch. In a way hurting theaters because now
you don't have to go out and see good movies,
but in a good way because those smaller films
that you won't be able to get in the middle of
America or in smaller areas are now at a touch
of a butt. And I think that's great because the
thing I love most about talking about movies
is finding those hidden gems, finding those movies
that no one's talking about and really getting
to experience them and so I would advise IndieWire,
actually the website IndieWire has a great article
every month about the top movies they watch on
demand. Check that out, they have trailers there
for you. You can really find something and see
that independent films are just as wide and varied
as all other films. There are great action movies,
there are great dramas, there are great comedies
and that stigma of being like, everything being
like Juno is starting to go away for a lot of
people. So that was the, for me, my everything
that happened this summer. My least favorite
thing, this is going to be really quickly because
it's probably didn't talk to you to death, and
that is just the craziness of fans when it comes
to casting. And obviously the go -to is Ben Affleck,
and I kind of understood that to a certain extent,
but creating petitions on websites, like on change
stuff. And fanboys are not alone, because recently
when the 50 Shades of Grey cast was announced,
that also had people going on to create petitions
that changed the casting of people. I don't know
what world we live in where like that has become
people go so crazy for Casting that they're gonna
go on to a website and do a petition that is
meant for like literally political type of things
and it's craziness and I mean You guys talked
to Mike powers and Steve talked greatly about
this on alter geek So check out those episodes
because I really get into it more in depth and
more than I will hear but I just to me that's
just craziness and i think there's so much more
to talk about and so much worse things to get
crazy about than the casting of movies but anyway
so yeah there was a and i think steve mentioned
this on on altered geek he was like yeah there's
there's all these pictures on all these memes
online of you know something happens in syria
yet ben afla gets cast as batman and everybody
loses their minds um the one thing you know i
you know people can listen to the pullback episode
27 for my thoughts on on bad flack i was fine
with it you know they couldn't have done it's
not like that you know they couldn't have done
any worse so um what about you mike what is your
favorite or least favorite and least favorite
thing for summer 2013 my favorite thing honestly
is because i think starting at the beginning
of the year at least when we got the first poster
uh... for pacific rim uh... you know we are personally
broken records here but uh... you know it showed
up at work in uh... i knew a little bit about
i knew is gerald el toro i knew it was giant
robots in either any the concept of it but i
hadn't seen anything is you know comic -con is
complete waste of everyone's time that's not
actually there uh... for for some reason uh...
But you know everyone at work was kind of like
okay, whatever and then the first trailer came
out and everyone at work So they're like it looks
okay. I'm like are you guys freaking kidding
me like it's it It's the only thing that's coming
out this year that has like zero baggage attached
to it. It's the it Yes, the ideas are borrowed
from everywhere else under the Sun, but that
can be said about anything But it was the only
original movie coming out this summer and I was
just kind of like, you guys are crazy if you
don't think this is going to be good or at least
exciting or to not be excited about it because
it's the only original thing coming this summer.
Everything else is either based off of a book
or a comic book or as a sequel to something that's
already come. And it's just like, you're nuts.
And I kept championing it and championing it.
And I was the only one at work that was excited
for it. And I think it was like the third trailer
that came out. And I was that was a trailer that
made me go, OK, I see why they did that. But
that's a really piss poor trailer. But then all
of a sudden, everyone at work was like, I see
and I totally see what you're talking about.
I get it. Now I'm really excited for this movie.
And of course, they got excited for it. And then
I got nervous because I was like, oh, man, I've
been I've been on board this thing from like
the get go. And if this thing sucks, I'm I've
never going to be able to live it down. And.
I luckily I went and you know I went and previewed
it in the IMAX and I saw it with everybody else
that you know I had you know gotten on board
my hype train and we all had the biggest grins
on our face from beginning to end and everybody
that I saw it with enjoyed it so I was like oh
thank god I didn't get on the wrong horse and
that that that was that was really satisfying
but I think in terms of like bad things that
have happened just and it's not even like it's
not bad right because we just talked about the
petitions and all the stuff that you know people
get people get mad about the casting stuff and
there's plenty of other things to get you know
so immature and stupid but hashtag for me for
me hashtag first world problems the worst thing
that i've seen or heard so far this summer is
the movie industry taking a cue from like the
the video game industry And we touched on this
a little earlier with the commentary track for
Man of Steel being locked to something. That
to me really bums me out. Don't get me wrong,
I use iTunes. I love the iTunes ecosystem and
everything. I've got all the toys that go along
with it. But I do not own any digital copies
of movies that I don't also have the Blu -ray
of, you know, like I get the Blu -ray that has
the digital copy. I've never bought a movie.
Just on iTunes, because, you know, streaming
media, downloaded media cannot does not match
Blu -ray yet, and it won't for a long time. And
I feel like. It bums me out that they're trying
that they're starting to do this like, you know
the commentary track for I love commentary tracks
This is this is why it really irritated me was
commentary track is only available on Apple,
you know on the iTunes store and then all the
other special features are divvied up and chopped
up, you know and dispersed among See, that's
the problem with the movie and the game industry
both movie industry specifically. I remember
when Iron Man Get released to DVD Go to the store
to get this version go to the store to get this
go to this story at this It's not just Iron Man
Transformers did it all these big budget movies
do it where all the stores want exclusives well
That shouldn't be how it is. There should be
one disc or two. Do you know one set? For whatever
movie it is one set with all the features you're
gonna put on it outside You know outside of like
collectors editions one standard to disc bonus
feature disc whatever That has everything that
you're going to put out unless it's special blu
-ray stuff I'm talking, you know just regular
old DVD here That just pisses me off that the
movie industry does that now and that just that's
just wrong It's I mean I I was fine with it early
on when it was just you know, you know target
with the Iron Man They got the steel case for
for Iron Man, but it was it was Yeah, but it
was the same version as everything else. It just
had a steel case to it And you know like best
buy gets like an exclusive slip cover some stupid,
you know thing like that They're all essentially
the same movie and then I can't remember. I think
it started with Transformers 2 They they had
Walmart got the IMAX version of Transformers
2 on blu -ray, and it's like what the heck man
now you've got But they still had all the same
special features as everybody else they just
had the IMAX one So I just had to go there to
buy it, but now it's like now. It's like Okay,
so everyone's getting the same movie, but and
we made all these special features, but now it's
like, okay, you get these two and you get these
two and you get the one that this guy wants.
I can't like I don't get that mad with the video
game stuff because I don't care about skins.
I don't care about extra map packs. I don't know.
That stuff is intangible to me. I don't really
care. I and the Avengers, I mean. the avengers
blu -ray was bare bones as anything unless you
bought it from somewhere which i didn't buy it
there um and that irritated me to no end i i'm
just it's really sad to see it go that way because
it makes me one it makes me not want to spend
my money when the movies come out and wait for
like some kind of special edition um so they're
they're they're losing money it's just and i
remember you know when avatar uh came out they
announced like three different versions Love
it like right off the bat and then they announce
like another two that we're coming at a later
time And it's like why would you announce all
this stuff ahead of time? Why would you not?
See that's that's like me now I know I know your
need to want the blu -ray and all that stuff,
but for me at this point If I can if I can spend
a buck on it at red box if I really want to see
it now Or I can wait three or four months till
it's on Netflix. I'm more of oh hey I'm going
to wait until the super collect like The Dark
Knight trilogy is coming out with a super collector's
edition with all three films and all this extra
other stuff. I'm to the point now where why am
I going to go spend 20 bucks on a two disc edition
when I can just wait? You know, I have that preordered.
I'm so excited to get that because I mean, I
own two copies. Actually, I have three copies
of Batman Begins. I've got the DVD, the HD DVD
and the Blu Ray. And then I've got I don't but.
For me, I don't own Dark Knight Rises, so I'm
willing to pay the 80 bucks just to get Dark
Knight Rises. Right, yeah. Seems fair enough.
All right, TFG1 Mike, what are your favorite
and least favorite things that happened this
summer? Going to see Iron Man 3. I know Mike
isn't specifically hip on that movie, but I just
thought it was a really cool, interesting way
to focus on him to set up phase two. Without
all of the shield baggage that was what I loved
about iron man 3 it was a story with him and
roadie and them being best friends and Sure,
he was out of the suit 90 % of the film But I
thought that was really cool that they did that
also Despicable me too is easily the funniest
comedy of the year as far as animated comedies
go disappointments on It's Kind of movie related,
but it's kind of not. I recently upgraded my
cable package, so I have a DVR now. The Hub aired
Tiny Tunes. I spent my summer vacation. And that
animated feature film is not what I remember
it being at all. I know it's not exactly theatrical,
but it just... It just wasn't what I... I remember
the Plucky Duck stuff with Hampton and Plucky,
but the whole Buster and Babs thing going down
the river, the whole thing, I just... I don't
know. As far as something in the theaters, you
know, I don't really have any bad moments for
theaters because if it's something that I believe
I can wait for digital release or something like
that, I won't go see it. I don't go to movies
expecting to be let down. I don't I don't either
I usually go and I try to go in with an open
mind which is like why like a lot of these movies
like even Like I said, I like RAPD even like
the Lone Ranger I enjoyed to a certain extent
it might have been the lack of Johnny Depp that's
in it even though he was He's in it in the previews
it looks like he's in it more than he actually
is yeah It's just I can't I go in with a certain
set of expectations, but it seems like the last
few years, especially after last summer, I go
in with lower than expected expectations. So
if I really don't like a movie, it's pretty bad.
Yeah, I mean, to me, if I'm on the fence about
seeing something I usually see in theaters, just
because to me, I think movies are meant to see
on a big screen. At all feel like I think this
will be a positive experience. I'll see it. I
don't see everything but I see most things and
For me like like you this I try to curtail my
expectations as much as possible Which is maybe
why something Alicia wasn't nearly as disappointing
for me as it was for a lot of people But I don't
try to like hey, I love district 9 this better
be as good as district 9 or it's unsuccessful
I think to me I try to View everything on its
own as much as I possibly can and so but so sometimes,
you know things still disappoint me and I don't
love everything but For the most part out of
what I've seen this summer I mean there are a
few things that I gave bad reviews But overall,
you know most of the things I say were at least
passable or at least recommend I would recommend
to someone to see even if you know something
like Wolverine did really well I thought that
was pleasant rise, but nothing really wowed me.
All right. Anything else anyone would like to
say it before we One last thing, they just need
to let Neil Blomkamp make his Halo movie already.
That's true. I'm tired of him teasing us with
District 9 and Elysium. Just let him make it
already. I don't even follow the Halo franchise.
Neither do I. I don't even like it. I just want
to see his movie. The closest thing I come to
the Halo franchise is the red versus blue guys.
Those are good. Yes, they are. and uh... final
thoughts yet this summer wasn't last summer you
had avengers spider -man and dark knight this
summer we had iron man three and wolverine and
later this year will warn us i am in a steel
okay yeah and and man of steel uh... you know
those six months i don't know what it is like
twenty twelve Don't know and I think maybe that'll
change once we Get more like if we get more consistent
films with Superman versus every 20 years or
every Seven years or whatever it is. You know
what I mean like I think if we get more consistent
films with that character It would be better
Honestly, I wanted them to do something slightly
different than what Marvel did. I wanted DC to
just say, screw it. Let's go all in with a Justice
League movie, get the perfect cast, and then
branch off of the Justice League movie to tell
individual movies. I know that probably isn't
going to work in most people's eyes, but that's
what I wanted them to do. Man of Steel kind of
set up a new DC cinematic universe, and we'll
see where it goes from there. I think 2013, you
know, you have sports teams that do this where
they have rebuilding year. I think 2013 is kind
of that rebuilding year where I think I'm more
excited about what Marvel has to come than I
was about RMP3 or even Thor 2. Like Guardians
of the Galaxy to me is far more interesting.
And I'm really psyched for Cap 2 because I just
I love that that comic series. So I'm excited
to see that come to the big screen. And I'm also
probably more excited for Batman and Superman
than I would have been for Man of Steel. So I
think that just regarding comic book movies,
I think We kind of set the stage a little bit
here and hopefully we will see better things
to come per se. Who knows what's going to happen?
I mean, who knows what will happen with Star
Trek if that will continue? I'm certain it will.
But yeah, I mean, like I said, I think 2013 is
a rebuilding year, though I am super excited
for the fall, which will hopefully get to dive
into even more in upcoming MY. Yes. Alright,
