Quam? It means love. Wish me luck. Dad! Whoa,

the beginning of a date, yeah. Just cry at the
end like I do. My whole life I've been trying

audio podcast yeah, well just nobody bring any
kryptonite to the party oh Man so in episode
96 we are going to be talking about Jerry motherfucking
McGuire Oh boy, did you see this in theaters?
I did not. I did not see this in theaters. I
honestly don't remember. I think the first time
I saw it, it was on TV. Or it was VHS or DVD.
I don't even know if they had DVDs in 97. I think
they did, but I don't remember. But no, I did
not see this in theaters, but I remember hearing
a lot about it not just because of who's the
main star but just because of the lines the quotes,
you know all this and all that plus that 1995
Bruce Springsteen song that got popular two years
later Yeah, this movie really seeped into pop
culture big time. Yeah, it was this It's every
it was everywhere and it is everywhere today
too. Sometimes if you search it out Yeah, I mean
there are so many quotes in this set have kind
of Popped into the lexicon of today Just show
me the money was everywhere. There was people
making jokes. I mean, I remember there were shows
that took that and there was like a crappy knock
off of Americans funny and some videos called
show me the funny there's like all these really
bad it it led to a lot of bad jokes unfortunately,
but yeah, and especially you know the Young kid
Lipnicki here in the film. He was he was everywhere
too. He was like the golden child He was almost
like a new Macaulay Culkin in a way Much younger,
but yes, you're right But you know, when I saw
this movie then and when I saw it now, I still
love it. I mean, you know, we'll let JT give
the plot and the just the facts and all that
stuff here in a minute, but if people bag on
this movie in its entirety, let me know because...
Well, I can see certain people having issues
with it. It's not that like It's no eyes wide
shut or it's no vanilla. It's not Tom Chris's
worst film I Know I mean it definitely gets sappy
at times. But yeah overall I think the The overall
opinion towards Jerry Maguire is relatively really
positive especially for sports fans because of
just it was a sports movie that was had little
sports in it in a way, but it was it kind of
showed you that the you know, the backstaging
of sports and how How much time has changed over
the time like during the early 90s, you know
agents sports agents they weren't well known
to the public but today sports agents are just
as popular as Sport stars and it could be because
of Jerry Maguire, but I think overall most people
have a positive feeling There might be some people
who don't we don't like Tom Cruise or just think
it's this romantic comedy and leave it at that
but from From when I personally am right with
you, and I think it's a really solid film Yeah,
I mean it is and you know of course as you said
it's it's basically You know testament to what
was going on in sports in the nineties and it
also has this this romantic angle in the back
like the sports thing obviously is the upfront
because it's it's the business it's the business
that he and and sugar and all those people are
in and he has this epiphany and he writes his
mission statement and all that and just I guess
the shit just hit the fan So we're gonna send
it on over to JT for Just the Facts, Jerry Maguire.
Jerry Maguire is the man when it comes to being
a sports agent. Enthusiastic and a hell of a
negotiator, Jerry has the right moves and the
right words to get things done. However, a career
spent doing whatever it takes to satisfy the
demands of his clients and his superiors at Sports
Management International have left Jerry with
a ton of stress and a guilty conscience which
comes to bite him in the ass in the form of a
nervous breakdown. After coming back to work,
Jerry writes a mission statement about how others
in the business should take a longer view of
their clients' careers instead of short -term
gains as a means of cleansing his conscience.
He hands out the memo to his friends and co -workers
at SMI who in turn applaud his honesty and clear
view of things, but his words also have the opposite
effect on the higher -ups who have Bob Sugar,
Jerry's apprentice, show him the door. His friends
suddenly forget all about Jerry and race to sign
as many of Jerry's clients as possible, the only
client not signed back to SMI is Arizona Cardinal's
wide receiver Rod Tidwell, who is unhappy with
his current contract. Through a long and somewhat
comically drawn -out phone call, Rod takes a
measure of Jerry's dedication to his client and
agrees to sign with him again, ending in the
infamous Show Me the Money scene. Jerry is also
successful in retaining college quarterback Frank
Cush Cushman, who's expected to be the number
one draft pick in the upcoming NFL draft after
visiting the young man at his family home. Jerry
leaves the office announcing he's going to open
his own sports agency and invites all who want
to join in to leave as well. Out of the whole
office, only secretary and single mom Dorothy
Boyd decides to leave with Jerry and she also
just happens to be in love with him. Jerry then
travels to the NFL Draft with both Kush and Rod,
who took some major convincing to join. The older
Rod doesn't have a good time feeling outshined
by the younger player. Jerry takes him aside
in the lobby and assures him that the one client
is just as important as the other. Too bad he
didn't also see keep your eyes on the prize because
while he's talking to Rod, the Weasley sugar
makes his move and fast talks Kush's dad Matt
into re -signing with SMI and cutting Jerry out.
It also doesn't help that the father, and possibly
Kush himself, is a bit racist when the elder
Kushman notes that Jerry was speaking to that
black fellow. When Jerry goes to Kush's hotel
room and sees what has happened, he is devastated
and seeks comfort from his fiance, Avery. But
she proves to be just two steps short of being
a gold digger, as when Jerry tells her he's lost
Kush and thus his bank account, Avery angrily
breaks up with him, slapping him and kicking
him in the pills before leaving the hotel room.
Comfort comes in the form of Dorothy, who helps
Jerry get back on his feet. As they work with
Rod and try to keep him happy, they fall in love
and eventually spend the night together. The
relationship with Dorothy and her young son Ray,
who quickly bonds with Jerry, proves to be just
what he needed to get his head back in the game.
But it's also revealed that Dorothy is thinking
of moving to San Diego for a real job, because
the money isn't exactly rolling in. Over the
next few months, Jerry dedicates as much time
as possible to both his professional responsibilities
with Rod and the new family he has with Dorothy
and Ray. Jerry's relationship with Rod, while
at first totally agent to player business -like,
starts to become more personal. Rod argues with
Jerry about how he doesn't think the agent is
working hard enough to get him what he wants,
that being finishing his career with the Cardinals.
Jerry accuses Rod of not working hard enough
to deserve the deal he's asking for. And upon
discovering that Dorothy had planned on moving
to San Diego for another job, Jerry proposes
to her and they are soon married. Unfortunately,
the marriage doesn't last as Jerry's work with
Rod leaves him emotionally cold and distant,
causing Dorothy to leave when she comes to think
that Jerry doesn't love her or Ray anymore. A
short time later, before a Monday night game
between the Cards and the Cowboys, Sugar attempts
to steal Rod away from Jerry. However, each man
comes to realize how much the other means to
them and they both tell Sugar to take a hike,
reconciling soon after. However, during the game
Rod suffers a huge hit from one of the Cowboys
offensive line and lands on his head hard. And
for a few moments it appears as if he's done
for, but he comes to and even dances for the
crowd who loudly cheer him on. Jerry and Rod
embrace each other afterwards, showing players
and agents alike that what Jerry talked about
in his memo is possible after all. Jerry then
flies home and goes to speak to Dorothy, who
is with her friends. He barges in and confesses
his love for her, making one of the most heartfelt
pleas in movie history. Dorothy, overcome with
emotion, takes Jerry back with just five simple
words. After reaffirming his love for Dorothy,
Jerry then quickly secures a deal with the Cardinals
for Rod, and while he is being interviewed on
the Roy Firestone sports show, Rod is informed
that his new contract has come through a four
-year deal worth $11 million, which will also
allow him to finish his football career with
the Cardinals. Overcome with emotion, Rod thanks
everyone, especially Jerry, for all his hard
work. The film ends with the McGuire family walking
through a park near a little league game. The
ball lands near them, and Ray throws it back
to the players, causing Jerry to comment on his
natural athletic ability, and Dorothy having
none of it. Jerry Maguire opened in theatres
during the Christmas of 1996 to a ton of positive
reviews and critical success. Headlined by Tom
Cruise and Renee Zellweger, the cast also included
Cuba Gooding Jr., Jay Moore, Beau Bridges, Jerry
O 'Connell, Kelly Preston, and young Jonathan
Lipnicki in one of his first on -screen roles.
The film was well loved by critics, many of which
cited the script by Cameron Crowe, who also directed
the film to be a major factor. Todd McCarthy
of Variety magazine said the film was smartly
written and had a sensational cast, not the least
of which was Tom Cruise, whom McCarthy said gave
one of his best performances in this film. And
Rita Kempley of the Washington Post commented
on how Cruise seemed to have grown as much as
his character, who brings gentleness, warmth,
and light -heartedness to his role, qualities
we haven't seen since he played air guitar in
Risky Business. And despite commenting on how
the plot was seemingly too full of subplots,
Roger Ebert gave the film 3 out of 4 stars, concluding
that the film was a delight. And because of all
this goodwill, the film currently holds an 85
% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes .com. Now as
I mentioned earlier, Cameron Crowe wrote the
script, which includes a character named Ethan
Valheer, played by Eric Stoltz, who also played
a guy named Valheer in Say Anything, which was
also written by Cameron Crowe. This leads fans
to believe that Jerry Maguire is in the same
cinematic universe as Lloyd Dobler and his ghetto
blaster. And unlike other movies where there
are many choices for the male lead, the role
of Dorothy had 11 different actresses attached
to it. These include Parker Posey, Marisa Tomei,
Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Patricia Arquette,
Nicole Kidman, Molly Ringwald, Uma Thurman, Winona
Ryder, Mira Servino, and Courtney Love. Which
is kind of a cool coincidence, because the song
playing when Jerry goes back to Kush's hotel
room on the night of the draft was Something
in the Way by Nirvana. And did you know that
the film is somewhat based on the life of sports
agent Lee Steinbert? He even cameos in the film
as the man who introduces Cruz to Troy Aikman
during the interview near the end of the film.
Now, I am not one who usually gravitates towards
dramatic movies. I am just not wired that way.
but I gave this film a chance based mainly on
my love for Tom Cruise films and I was not disappointed.
The movie really gets to me every time I watch
it. All the highs and lows from sugar snatching
away Kush at the draft to Rod's recovery during
the game to Jerry's impassioned plea for another
chance from Dorothy. Every time I watch the movie
it feels like the first time. It's rare when
a movie can do that for me. This has been Just
the Facts for Jerry Maguire. I'm JT from Saskatoon,
and now I'll be sending you back to the rest
of the guys on M -Wire. Later. Thank you once
again, JT, for the awesome Just the Facts and
all that information. Yeah, I mean, I know we
normally talk about the cast first and everything
else, but the plot of the movie isn't... It isn't
as bad as... Like, I hadn't seen this in years.
It's... It's probably been seven, eight years
since I had seen this. And how I saw it was,
again, kind of like almost the first time I saw
it. I caught it on AMC at like 11 o 'clock in
the morning a couple of weeks ago. I don't know
why AMC was running Jerry Maguire at 11 o 'clock
in the morning during the week. I have no clue.
But I caught it and I was like, oh yeah, hey,
if we could have recorded that episode, I guess
I should sit here and watch this. My guess is
they're probably rerunning it because it's Oscar
time and they're usually rerunning past Oscar
nominees and not Oscar winners. Probably. Yeah,
probably. I don't know. I mean, of course, outside
of their original programming -like freaking
zombie show and... All that stuff, you know AMC
is American movie classics and I guess If you
look at it in the decade that it was in and by
the time we're where we are now I guess 90s some
90s films can be considered classics In in that
span of oh, yeah the 90s, I guess I'm not saying
like I'm not saying Jerry Maguire is like the
next gone with the wind obviously it's not but
As time goes on the 90s kind of turns into kind
of like what the what the 30s and 40s were You
know what I mean as far as like films being able
to say that they're classics Yeah, I mean just
the films that were kind of mediocre and not
very good or become forgotten and those that
were quality movies tend to say the test of time
and are going to be played again and again on
cable television. I mean, very rarely. I mean,
occasionally there'll be old films that aren't
very good that are played, but most likely if
you're going to be played on AMC or one of the
higher networks, there's a reason for it. And
usually there's a following or you have a really
high quality movie. And I mean, when you think
of it, the nineties are 20 years ago almost I
mean this is almost in a few years this will
be 20 years old which seems crazy makes me feel
really old but makes you feel really old you
know but what did you what did you think of the
actual plot of the film the plot of the movie
it as I said before it's all about the business
at first because you know he you know we get
this behind the scenes look of what a sports
agent does Now sports you know agents in general
They have to go after the best deal the best
roles the best whatever for their client whether
it's sports whether it's Acting voice that will
music whatever they have to you know Do the best
for their client because the client is obvious
obviously they get a percentage of the clients
What however however agents get paid they get
it's not it's not hourly But they get a certain
like and the way I look at it. It's kind of like
a lawyer he they get a certain percentage of
a settlement or a win or whatever so You know
at first it's all business and then You know
the hockey players kid just says fuck you to
McGuire and he just goes off and says, what does
this business become? And I like that because
he's, it's almost like he's having a early to
midlife crisis, but not really. He's just looking
at his life and saying, what is, this isn't what
I wanted to become. Yeah. He's trying to define
what success is. And in a way, yes, he's very
successful in his job, but what does that cost
him morally? And what has that really led to?
And what is that costing him in his personal
life too? Cause you look at that, at that bachelor
tape and oh my God. Yeah. I mean the plot, like
we mentioned that the surface plot is that agent
story, but the overall plot's right in the title.
It's Jerry Maguire. This is the character. It's
about him. It's about the character. It's about
how he wants to proceed through life. Exactly.
And he writes this amazing. I love that whole
scene. I honestly do, I honestly do, I can't
see Tom Cruise sitting at a computer in the middle
of the night just typing away like that, but
I just, I love that whole scene where he writes
this up, he has this idea, he has this epiphany,
he goes out and makes god knows how many copies
puts, and this was at a time where And I know
nowadays, especially with the internet and stuff,
self -publishing is the rage now where you can
do it online. But back then, you had to do it
the way he did it. And granted, it's not something
that, you know, it's not a publication to where,
oh my god, this is going to be on the next Barnes
and Noble. But he did what probably most, I would
say, amateur writers would do, write it up, print
it out. Take it to a kinkos or an all -night
whatever FedEx cut whatever get a copy get a
you know get a Jacket and all that stuff on the
thing and everything else and then he goes And
then the crisis of conscience on his part with
holy shit, why did I give this to everybody?
Yeah, his his benefit is one of those things
where you and the moment it feels all right And
you kind of get caught up in it and you're thinking
all this is really gonna lead to something You
don't even know what but then as you see the
realization of what he did Starts to kind of
seep in and you realize this well, this is gonna
this is not gonna lead to good things But maybe
it will lead to certain good things. Obviously,
he means he's probably losing his job. He realizes
that you're probably hoping it doesn't but we
see Right when he walks in, everyone's clapping.
They're like, how long do you give him? Like,
give him a week. Because I know this is he wrote
his own death sentence. It's just obituary to
being a sports agent with this company. It's
his manifesto. But that manifesto is going to
piss off pretty much everyone he works with.
So and it's a really cutthroat business, as you
see, and kind of gets into that really deeply.
And I think that scene, like you mentioned, that
you liked a lot. I think it comes in. One reason
it's really effective is when you have a director
like Cameron Crowe, who is a very great writer
and that's what he really strives at. Obviously
he was able to, you know, lend that experience
to Tom Cruise in that moment. So it really worked
well. Oh yeah, it did. It very much did. I can't
believe Kelly Preston is the bitch in this. Oh
my god. She is just so cold and calculating.
Yeah. Avery Yeah, she is not very likable and
she gets a really great some really great punches
it on brush on Tom Cruise I mean he gets oh,
yeah, I highly doubt those were film Punches
where you know, they're pulled and there's just
no she She I bet she really did hit him. And
of course back then He was what maybe 15 16 years
into his career Well, yeah about that. I mean
actually this was was kind of crazy This was
this he was on a high because this was his fifth
film in a row That that gained over a hundred
million dollars, which was a record at the time
It may still be but he was riding high. It was
one of his biggest Like he kind of could do not
wrong, but he kind of started in the early. I
mean his movie career, I guess Depends on what
you say kind of broke him because he but I guess
if you go back to where he started the big thing
I think most people remember him from Trying
to think when did I mean do you obviously have
Risky business that was probably the biggest
film that kind of broke him and then Rain Man
and Top Gun and all those great 80s films Yeah,
I mean he's got Mean the outsiders possibly maybe
he wasn't it that that apps. Yeah apps as well.
Yeah But I mean he had like From 81 to 85 81
83 and 85 those three years He had a movie. He
had like one two. He had four movies in 1983
281 185 and then 86 88 a couple and you know,
so I mean it's one of those things where the
dude was just everywhere and By the time you
get down to Maguire That same year he launched
mission and he relaunched mission impossible
You know, I know I know a lot of people like
interview with the vampire I don't even before
I heard about the sparkly version. I didn't care
about vampires as a 14 year old But I mean I
I don't know what has somewhere between 96 and
99 he just Like once eyes wide shut came out.
I was like, what the heck did you do Tom? That
was a little crazy. I Think he I think he kind
of he got some notoriety as an actor. So he thought
he'd take some Chances, I mean eyes wide shut
I understand why he would do that movie being
Stanley Kubrick It's doing it was his wife at
the time Nicole Kinman But so I can understand
what he was trying to do He was also in Magnolia,
which I think is one of his best performances
that he's he's excellent But yeah, he I mean
eyes wide shut was mostly a disappointment Magnolia
is a smaller movie. So I think what happened
was he had a lot of He was coming off an Oscar
nomination, his second Oscar nomination, so perhaps
he was kind of done with the blockbusters and
wanted to do something different. But shortly
thereafter, he did Mission Impossible 2, and
then Vanilla Sky, which is another disappointment.
But I always remembered him having a really,
like, lackluster career after 96, but overall,
I mean, Mission Impossible 2 was a huge hit.
That was only a few years later, Minoral Report,
Last Samurai. The thing about Cruz after 96 is
not counting the Mission Impossible movies. He's
gone out of his way to find roles that people
wouldn't expect him to be in, like The Last Samurai.
Like, collateral, he was creepy as all hell in
that movie. Yeah. My God. Like, I didn't, like,
I knew it was him, but the white hair and he
looked like he was 50 years older than what he
actually was at the time in 2004. it was just
so creepy and he like I said outside of the whole
action thing and maybe outside of like Tropic
Thunder he's pretty much gone to the point of
what is the most unique role that people won't
see me as whatever like won't see me as Maverick
or won't see me as Brian from Cocktail or won't
see me as Ethan Hunt You know you take a look
at I think he's kind of I think he's kind of
like not to Not to be ironic here, but he think
I think he's kind of reaching with Jack Reacher
Because from what I've seen and I'm not judging
the movie I'm just saying that from what I've
seen of the trailers. It looks like it's some
sort of spy movie I haven't read up on it. I
think he's kind of reaching with that because
of the whole He has the Mission Impossible franchise
to deal with? I've seen Jack Reacher. It's not
really a spy film. It's more of a crime novel.
He plays an ex. He worked for kind of the NCIS
type of organization for the military, but he's
retired. And then he comes in to kind of help
this case with a sniper. But I think we're...
Reaching in that film not so much with the movies
that that book character was supposed to be this
like really kind of grisly Man and it was kind
of like brooding and that's not really Tom Cruise
I think he tried to do it in Jack Reacher, which
I think is an okay movie, but I don't think he
but he was really a Great choice for that role.
I don't think you really fit him really well
And then like 2012 wasn't really great this year
because he was also in Rock of Ages. And I think
he had a fun performance, but that movie overall
was kind of at best. So I think what he does
a lot is he does a movie for the studios and
he does a movie for himself. He does something
he thinks will be successful financially and
I'll do something smaller and take a bigger chance.
He'll do a night and day and then do a Valkyrie.
He'll do Mission Impossible 3, then do Alliance
for Lambs and play a smaller role. It's almost
like Steven Soderbergh is the director people
know for doing. He does one for the studio, then
he does one for himself. I think Tom Cruise is
the same way as an actor. The next thing he's
got coming up this year is Oblivion. I saw the
trailer for this and I didn't know what to like...
I've never really been into 1970s science fiction
films. Obviously I was born 10 years too late.
But it stars him and the chick from Quantum of
Boredom. Yeah. Curly whatever the hell her name
is. Yeah, I'm sure she wishes she could get that
off her resume. But that's what what he's got
coming up next in the next year according to
Wikipedia all you need is kill so There have
been reports that he wants to do a fifth mission
impossible movie Apparently Brad Bird said that
he probably wouldn't return to directing but
I'm sure they can find someone to the mission
impossible anyone would Honestly, who directed
the second one? Oh, it wasn't Ang Lee, it was
John Woo. I would like to see another John Woo
mission impossible. I'd rather not, I wasn't
a huge fan of that one. You might actually like
Oblivion because it's directed by the guy who
did Tron Legacy, so there's a nice connection
there for you. Cool, cool. So that's Tom Cruise.
You know, his character is, it's not a one -dimensional
character. It's very faceted with Jerry Maguire,
and it's very, very interesting. And then the
complete opposite of that is the one guy that
sticks with him, Rod Didwell, Cuba Gooding Jr.
Yes, the role that... Made his career. I don't
know if I don't know question more. Yeah question
mark. Yeah. Well before that people would have
Remembered actually Wow, I did not know this
He and Tom had starred in a film before a few
good men Corporal Carl Hamaker from a few good
men in 92 Yeah, and he was also in voice the
hood which Which was pretty good, but he I think
he just had a small role in a few good men, but
And then losing Isaiah in 95 before Jerry. Yeah,
I would say that Jerry Maguire probably was his
breakout as far as like a starring role Yeah,
I mean he everyone it won him the Oscar he a
lot of people expected big things and unfortunately
He when people look at people who have won Oscars
and haven't done much with them. He's usually
the top on that list He's been in a few things.
But overall he's been a lot of duds snow dogs
Men of honor, you know just bad movie. I was
a dud financial like financially financially,
okay Again like boat trip a radio which was I
think overall okay, but it was not success I
thought it would be It's kind of if you watch
Tropic Thunder this you know He kind of went
full retard with that as they say in that movie
But he he's had a few things here and there like
he was an American gangster that he did a good
job in that Yeah, I like that movie He was one
of the few things I thought a few good things.
I thought about red tails I liked his performance
in that for that film which I thought was overall
not successful, but Well, you know, I didn't
have lightsabers and stuff so Yeah, it's been
surprisingly But he's got Like a lot of these
like since we've been going back into the 90s
and looking at a lot of these movies and the
ones that we have looked at and looking at a
lot of these actors and kind of going in this
kind of almost a new format for him wire just
kind of going over what they've been in it surprises
me that some of these people Are still doing
as much as they like he's get he had four films
last year according to this he's got four films
coming up this year and then one obviously one
for next year, but He's got an amazing filmography
yes, I do agree that he does have a lot of duds
in there as well But I mean he's a he's a decent
actor. I I do feel though because of how popular
the character of Tidwell became because of show
me the money and You know, you can't shoplift
the poon because all that and and everything
else I believe he has been slightly typecasted
Simply because of Just that role. I mean that
role is like that's one of those roles where
it's so memorable. That's all you can see him
in and then you like watch snow dogs or you watch
you know something like that yeah it's almost
like they thought he might be like like the new
eddie murphy but in a way just like the new comedic
star they would go to just never really worked
out i think but uh who knows i mean he could
turn it around looking at his films like i forget
there are a few good movies in there just i guess
those dutch are so bad that they overshadow anything
good almost And then we move down to Bridget
Jones, or I'm sorry, Renee Zoelliger. The funny
thing is, it was after I saw Jerry Maguire, I
saw another film and I was shocked that she was
in it. 1995's Empire Records as Gina. I was like,
oh my God, what is she doing in that? That's
awesome. Let's see, what else people know her
from? Nurse Betty me myself and Irene obviously
the Bridget Jones movies People might know her
from white oleander Chicago and I mean cold mountain
cold mountain Yeah, she you know is an Oscar
winner. She she won for she she won for a role
in cold mountain Yeah, but probably what people
are mostly from is Stewart Maguire Bridget Jones
Jones because those were those were huge films
forget how big those were but those are kind
of You know during their time one of the really
big romantic comedies she kind of stayed in that
realm for a while But she stayed in that room
for a while, but as of three years ago. She hadn't
done nothing and My own love song in 2010 was
according to this was her last project She might
have more stuff listed over on the IMDB but According
to Wikipedia, that's it. Yeah, that's all she's
really done. She was in case 39 in 2009 I think
that was released in 2010, which is an absolutely
horrible movie But lately actually has not done
much still looks like there might be a new Bridger
Jones's movie But we really need another one
of those No, we don't Thank you But she's an
interesting actress a I Almost prefer her doing
voice acting from seeing from hearing her in
B movie then I do actually seeing her as an actress
on on screen I Don't know. It's just one of those
things where Yeah, she's a hard one to place
to it's it is cuz she's had some good stuff I
mean she was good in Coal Mountain. She was I
thought she was really good in this Yeah but
I would be completely okay with her getting a
second win of her career if she went more towards
voice acting. I think that might be a good road
for her to go down. Like you said, we don't know
when it's going to come out, but apparently it's
in pre -production, Bridget Jones' Baby. And
then according to IMDb also four and a half minutes
comes out next year. It's in pre -production
currently for her Kelly Preston, oh man Chandra
Volta's wife Really I had no idea I Believe so.
Let me just double -check that. I think I think
they were married it at one point. Yeah That
stuff I really sometimes I know I put most of
this Like he was married to who it's so hard
to keep track of with with Holly what it changes
so often Oh, I did not know that oh wow their
son passed away Oh, yeah, I believe it was they
were on vacation or something. I forget. Yeah
behind it But it was like a very unexpected tragedy
that occurred. Yeah But now she's still married
to John Travolta she's been in a lot of stuff,
not just film, but she was in an episode of Quincy
M .E. back in the day, she was in an episode
of Chips, Hawaii Five -O, I really think she
was in Twins, holy crap, which I can't believe
they're gonna be making a sequel out of that,
Triplets, ugh. Oh boy. Also in 96 she was in
From Dusk Till Dawn. But I honestly think just
looking at her filmography here probably the
most famous thing you would recognize her from
in the beginning is Jerry Maguire. I mean she's
done a bunch of other stuff before that but after
that she was in Nothing to Lose, Holy Man, Jack
Frost, For Love of the Game. She was in battlefield
earth. I mean battlefield earth. Yeah Yeah She
was in what a girl wants. I like her as an actress.
She's a really really good actress She was the
superhero mom in sky high in 2005. That was funny
But there really hasn't been any like I Like
her in a lot of films and I like her as an actress
but like she's not Like your mainstream actress,
I don't know why but like she's not someone you
would think of in Like a major role. I got like
us like a super like she's not Hey, here's Nicole
Kidman in birthday girl She's yeah, she's not
really a leading lady. She's good in certain
spots You can place her in in certain roles and
she's a good TV actress but She's not someone
who's going to carry a movie, one that you can
really rely on to give you really dramatic or
well -rounded performance. She has a certain
thing she does, and if she has a good director
behind her that can use her effectively, then
I think she can work well. I don't know how she's
going to perform this, but... She might be nominated
for an Oscar next year or the year after because
Next year. She's gonna be starring or she'll
show I don't know if it's a starring role or
not But she's gonna be in Gotti in the shadow
of my father as Victoria Vicky Gotti. It's in
pre -production That could be interesting yeah,
it also could be like a TV movie you never really
know Yes, that's true Yeah, but like just like
Renee Zellweger she hasn't Kelly hasn't done
anything since 2010 and I I think probably because
of the the death of Jet that's probably one of
the reasons why Yeah, I'm sure that plays into
it and they've also have a overall big family
to begin with so I mean even drawn to build as
well Didn't hasn't done much in the last 10 years
either. So they could have just be taking a break
or cut but yeah Who knows? Jerry O 'Connell.
Oh my god. This guy. Well, Stand By Me. Everybody
remembers Stand By Me, right? Of course. Maybe
his biggest claim to fame. He's the fat kid that
was in Stand By Me, grew up to actually be big
and athletic. Who would have thought? Police
Academy five assignment Miami Beach kid at the
beach Calendar girl Jerry Maguire scream to can't
hardly wait. Oh, yeah, he was tripping nearly
that he was uncredited for that role though I
mean my first I even want to add to this day
when I see Jerry O 'Connell, I think sliders
even Yeah on TV. Yeah I forgot all about the
fact that he was in this as the up -and -coming
quarterback of Jerry Maguire's big agent that
ends up turning his back on him. And again, as
far as film, he's done stuff with TV since 2010,
but as far as film... He hasn't done anything
on film since 2010. He did the voice of Captain
Marvel in Superman Shazam and Return of Black
Adam, as far as TV in the last three years. He
was on The Defenders, he was a voice on G .I.
Joe Renegades as Barbecue, and last year he was
in Mockingbird Lane, which is a TV movie. Other
than that, he hasn't been doing much. Looks like
he's gonna be in scary movie 5, which is probably
not a good sign because that looks god -awful.
Yeah, no Wait, what what the hell is Mitt Romney's
tax return hunt short Wow That's weird weird
Apparently he's gonna be in burning love in an
episode The look -alike is in post -production,
Space Station 76 is in post -production. Scary
Movie 5, oh my god. It's taken them too many
damn years to get five of those damn movies out
of here. I would have thought Scary Movie 5 would
have come out four years ago. I'm not complaining
that they're not making more of them, that's
the - I know, but I'm saying like, you know,
I thought by now we would be up to Scary Movie
10! I guess the issue is that there are many
- Big horror film so there's not much to You
know parody if there aren't many I mean they're
parroting trailers now of movies. It's crazy
like it's I don't know it's It's those films
are kind of they seem to be making the parody
films before the actual films are even out yet.
So Anyways anybody else in the cast list that
stands out to you Oh man, there are so many people.
I don't even think we can go through all of them,
but there are just so many. Jay Moore, Regina
King, Bonnie Hunt, all of those people stand
out. Regina King especially as Marcy because
she, I think was it later that year, she played
Will Smith's wife in Enemy of the State 96 or
was it 98? I think it was 98, I don't remember.
And the kid Love Kenny or whatever the heck his
name is yeah, yeah You know he's he I think he
was just on an episode of the nurse the other
day I don't remember he was on song I heard him
on something he was with it wasn't just him it
was somebody else with him, but But he's like
grown up to be a full -on director whatever what
kind of issues are you having what did you do
did you break it Hey, I'm back. Sorry, my battery
started going. I had it fully charged, but my
cord came out, so I had to re -plug it in so
my computer didn't shut down. No, a lot of these
people on here, like I said, Jonathan Lipnicki,
he's grown up to be a bona fide producer. I heard
him on something the other day. I don't know
if it was Nerdist Podcat I heard him on something
with some he was with somebody promoting something
it wasn't a YouTube video or anything like that,
but I Don't know I saw him somewhere But yeah,
I mean and you know Jay Moore he's he's been
in a ton of stuff Very very awesome Wasn't Eric
Stoltz the original Marty McFly? Yeah, if you
buy the if you buy the blu -ray they they're
actually scenes and on the blu -ray the Of him
and it's just it's such a strange thing watching
him play Marty McFly Because it's it lacks any
type of comedy. It's they made that the right
choice and Going asking him. Yeah As far as the
cameos, obviously, we're not gonna talk at length
about these people's careers because it's not
film former NFL quarterbacks Drew Bledsoe Troy
Aikman and Warren Moon Jordan ice skater Katrina
Witt then current Dallas Cowboys head coach Barry
Switzer former Detroit Lions coach Wayne Fontz
plays themselves in the film other NFL players
that cameos as themselves are Tim McDonald Johnny
Morton Rick Mirra Rob Moore Art Monk Kerry Collins
Of course, for sportscasters, you have the classic
90s ones, Al Michaels, Frank Gifford, Ray Firestone,
Mike Tertio, Dan Deardoff. You know, you've got
tons of cameos. some other ESPN personalities.
But yeah, it's kind of it brought me back. We
watching this, seeing some of those stars, seeing
what's kind of cool, too, is a lot of the sports
clips that they showed this the last final game
because there really is very little sports actually
being played except for that that main game at
the end. Yeah. And that was actually the majority
of that footage was taken from a real NFL game.
They just kind of edited it and putting in certain
scenes for the movie, which was kind of... Let's
hope they had the expressed written consent.
Yo, of course it did, because... No, I know,
but you know how they always say that at the
beginning of any sports thing? It's like, this
product cannot be copied, transmitted without
the expressed... It's kind of funny, too, because
it... Just seeing some of that old footage and
there's a kind of a cool thing and when they're
playing the Eagles and you're seeing the Eagles
in the old uniforms But when they're doing the
scenes At the stadium the new logo, which is
now the logo they have now is in the background
So there's obviously a transition going on there
But I kind of like that that they kind of use
real actual NFL footage for their games It was
a cheap way to do it but in it for them But it
made it more effective and made those those moments
feel more real and when they transition to the
moments directly related to the film. I never
really felt like I was watching a different game.
It all felt coherent and within the moment. Yeah.
No, the sports moments were really great and
I often wonder, well, I don't often wonder, but
I often wonder at least with watching this film,
do ESPN or like any of those news outlets whether
it's sports news whether it's regular do they
save like do you think that they save that those
footages and just had the had the cameos cut
a relic cut in Rod Tidwell's name or anything
because i'm wondering if those were like you
said it was it was old footage but i'm wondering
if it was if they did it as completely old broadcasts.
That's what I'm wondering is if ESPN saves like
May 21st, 1996, broadcast of Sports Center. You
see what I'm saying? So I'm wondering if those
places hold on to that stuff. I'm certain they
do. I mean, all NFL films keeps track of a lot.
They fall to pretty much every game that's ever
been played and the different productions of
it. Regarding like old episodes like Sports Center
or something like that that I'm certain they
do I would I would assume I don't know for sure
but because they They often cut back at times
and if you watch Sports Center today if something
happens if there's an anniversary They often
show old foot old footage of them covering it
at the time. So would be my guess You know the
whole love story thing within the film, right?
I found that interesting how that happened between
Jerry and Dorothy. I think all we're missing
is a tin man and a cowardly lion. But I found
it interesting how that happened. Watching it
back, I honestly think that the dialogue between
the two of them was kind of more it's when i
watched it back it felt like it was more forced
like the whole thing with at the end with well
if this is where it has to happen this is where
it has to happen you're my wife and i love you
know the whole thing and then of course everyone
nowadays in the last you know as you said this
film's almost 20 years old um everyone nowadays
always uses You had me at hello is one of the
worst lines of any film or whatever else but
it goes to what their love story is because he
does use the line that he asked her about with
a deaf couple in the elevator was you know you
complete me and all that and everything else
but I don't know I I like this for the sports
aspects I like it for his character aspects and
his development and his need to change, but I
don't know if I like the love story in this movie.
It's too strange for me. I could see the argument
that it is overwritten in a way. Did calculate
a lot of things to kind of play together a lot
or all those running motifs with that? Angry
woman's club of divorced woman all these kind
of ongoing lines like you mentioned the you complete
me thing and it all culminates into this last
moment and it does reap of being like a Moment
from like every other romantic comedy when there's
so much around it that was better than that It
does kind of cheapen it in a way like you mentioned
and you had me at a hello And it's kind of like
I rolling you're like, okay, that's a little
much. You didn't really necessarily need that
I mean, I do think we're saying that was Renee's
over here does a really good job delivering that
line even with the cheesiness, but I could see
that it does get a little camera crow does kind
of Need to like allow the film to be its own
thing sometimes and when he does it works really
well like that scene with Tom Cruise meeting
the Lipnicki's the young kid for the first time
and how that was completely ad -libbed He just
let him go and it feels really natural and that
compared to that final moment Which feels very
written and very forced like you mentioned it
you kind of wish he did that more often One of
the reasons why I think it's so written and so
forced is because throughout the entire film,
Dorothy essentially ignores the divorced women's
group. I assume the reason why the divorced women's
group meets in her sister's house is because
her sister might be divorced. It's never really
stated in the film, and I haven't really actually
read the plot online anywhere recently to see
if it says her divorced sister. but it's like
at the end she comes around is like yeah and
she joins the friggin group and i'm thinking
you you had a little fight you had a a slight
breakup you didn't divorce the guy already he
even calls you his wife when he comes that just
her character does seem very wishy -washy she
does she does not stand on firm ground she tends
to kind of React very quickly the things I mean
she falls in love with Tom Cruise almost immediately
just based upon his manifesto and listening over
a conversation he has in there on the on the
plane so I It kind of fits her character, but
you kind of what she had a moment where you felt
She was taking charge or you felt like she was
more full of her character We're in a lot of
ways. She was just a reactionary piece to Jerry
Maguire and I think she was he felt like I think
that would have strengthened the love story if
you felt there were moments where she was actually
doing something and she's not just trying to,
you know, make everyone happy, which almost seems
like what she does in a way. Like, I think the
big reason she tries to divorce her is almost
to please her sister. Like, everything she does
is calculated for other people and never kind
of for what's right or what's wrong, just what
she thinks will make things easier in a way.
Yeah, the other scene I really really enjoyed
was Drunk Jerry fucking Zeus clothes, right?
Yeah The stuff with with Lib Nikki is is awesome
You know, I don't know. I don't remember him
in much else after that as far as like an actor
like I said, I know nowadays he's more on the
on the backside on like producing and all that
stuff, but like after that film I cannot think
of one single film that he was in that I Really
really remember. I mean, I think the big thing
he did after that was the Stuart little movies
Again like those movies he would like I remember
him from like Mike He was also after Jerry Maguire
I think what they tried to do is put him in TV
series to think oh people love this kid They
were gonna love him on TV. They put him in the
Jeff Fox worthy show, which was a really bad
sitcom Yes, yes it was But yeah, his biggest
thing was stuart little which were pretty big
movies. He did some of the like the like the
disney things like little vampire and like mike,
but Yeah, I think still to this day He's gonna
always be known as that kid from jerry maguire
with the big head and where it's in the square
glasses Yeah, the human head weighs eight pounds.
Yeah, i'm sure he hears that on a daily basis
still to this day But the relationship I thought
really worked beyond just that romantic relationship
was that between Jerry Maguire and Rod. That
friendship really blossomed over the film, yeah.
And how different they are in just seeing them
both evolve and how they affect each other and
how something Cuban Gooding or Bratiduel would
say and how it would affect what Jerry Maguire
would... and how they kind of devolved each other.
And you see Rod having this kind of bravado when
it comes to sports, but when it comes to his
personal life, he's very loving, a very caring
person. And I think you see Jerome McGuire seeing
that, and he's just unable to do the same. There's
that scene in the pizza, I think it's a pizza
place or restaurant, and Rod Tidwell and his
wife are very... affectionate towards one another
and Tom Cruise is there with his wife and It's
being forced and they just don't feel comfortable
Yeah Well, you know when you propose to a woman
outside of a van in the middle of you know Just
for the hell of it to keep her from going away,
you know Like I don't Thinking about it now after
I watched the movie. I don't buy their love story
Not in the beginning. I don't because like sure
she as you said kind of falls in love with what
he wrote and I Don't know it's I think at the
beginning almost you're not supposed you're not
supposed to buy that moment. It's supposed to
feel unearned because it's Jerry Maguire being
that person who can't be alone and that person
who just is doing something without really thinking
it through just because he's afraid of what will
happen if he is kind of left by himself and then
when he gets to the point and he is alone and
He has that line to Rod Tidwell and he's in there
about to go to the game It's like oh you came
to show support. He's like, well, you're all
I have and I think that Kind of shows you at
the end. I think that's the first realization
of Him losing something he never really understood
what he had because he was unable to let it go
and when it was forced upon him He was kind of
able to reconcile and realized there was something
there He just never went for it because it was
too uncomfortable and something he wasn't used
to Right So but yeah, okay. No good. No, but
that's kind of what I saw that moment. So And
of course Wow Okay, well back in 1990 1996 there
were DVDs because The film was first released
on DVD on December 13th 1996 and I don't believe
this because I know it's it has to be true obviously
because it says there's features on it, but There's
both a standard edition and a two disc special
edition like I didn't like I hadn't noticed two
disc special editions till about 99 2000 And
as far as the legacy of the film, you know, I
Mean it's it's considered AFI listed as their
top ten number ten in the top ten greatest films
of all time those poets remembered two lines
from the film show me the money and You had me
I had a low or on AFL AFI both of them are on
top 25 and 52. Show me the money's at 25 You
had me and hello is at 52 and you complete me
was nominated 100 100 years 100 Cheers. It was
nominated 100 years 100 movies 10th anniversary
edition. It was nominated Topped 10 top 10 10
number 10 sports film also nominated romantic
comedy Let me ask you a question. Do you feel
this is a sports movie? Yes Because I know some
people say it isn't but I because there aren't
much sports in it But like I'm I'm with you.
I think it's very that's the thing about the
movie It's it's sports but it's not what you
as we said before it's not what you see It's
not what the average viewer would turn on their
television and see it's sports, but it's sports
behind the scenes It's taking you into the life
of a player in Rod Tidwell I guess to a lesser
extent, you know, Kush and his dad's stronger
than oak thing, you know, but it's more of a
behind the scenes sports movie than it is, oh
my God, it's Rod Tidwell in the game, yay. Exactly.
I see this more as a sports movie than I do a
romantic comedy because the romantic, the comedy,
not comedy, the romance part of it is the B story.
I mean, at the end, it turns into the A story,
obviously, because, yay, Rodgut, $11 .3 million
for four, you know, sure, all that happens. But
the beginning of this movie to about, I would
say, the 85, 90 % till it's done is a sports
movie. That last 10 % of the film is where the
romance really comes in. Yeah, I agree that I
would also consider a sports movie and I think
the fact that we asked that question on moments
It solidifies that it is a really good sports
movie. Yeah. Oh it is. It's it's very good I
can I could I could watch this every couple of
years. I just hadn't watched it in a long time
and then obviously You know, I saw it a couple
weeks ago before we recorded. Yeah, so and the
reason I can I also consider it's because people
Often I think sports movies become too much about
the sports not enough about the characters right
someone thinks of Rocky we always think of The
boxing but we really watched the first Rocky
film. There's very little about boxing in that
movie It's about Adrian. It's about Rocky and
they're really Yeah, exactly. And I think this
is really equates well to that film as it's Jerry
Maguire his relationships with just I think humanity
as a whole and right so I completely agree I
category as this is a sports movie. Last thing
I want to talk about before we head to an ad
break is Bruce Springsteen's Secret Garden. Apparently
a Bruce Springsteen song from 95 needs to be
re -released in 97 after being in the film to
get popularity. In the 90s close to I would say
well I'd say from 95 to 99 They always had this
thing of putting in stuff with the song from
whatever it was featured in. There is a Jerry
Maguire version of Secret Garden where it cuts
in quotes and audio scenes from the movie, like
the whole you had me at hello thing. That whole
time, from 95 to 99, there are many songs that
do that. Like, I think there's a version of...
And I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I'm just
saying I find it very interesting that they did
that. And I don't think a lot of stuff does that
nowadays. Which I think is good in a way, but
I remember Elton John's Candle in the Wind. There
was something there where they... There was a
version of that where they used some sort of
footage or some sort of audio bits. uh... what's
the other one uh... all things on they did stuff
with that i believe the kenny g version did stuff
with that so i don't know i like the song it's
a good song as far as the rest of the soundtrack
you've cast uh... in the man uh... rolling stones
Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Tom Petty, oh god, Tom
Cruise singing Free Fallin'. That was so hilarious.
Yeah, that moment when he's trying to fight the
right song for that. It's hilarious, because
if you know anything about King or Crow movies,
his soundtracks are almost always great. Even
when his movies aren't great, he's... great at
using music for the moment and I thought that
was hilarious because he's trying to find that
that right song to sing to because we so often
see that after something positive happens it
goes to the guy in the car singing along and
just trying to you know play you know play with
that common trope I thought was a great moment
what I found uh interesting about the the music
and the scoring and all that stuff and and the
songs that are in the film the film was scored
by Crow's then -wife, Nancy Wilson. One half
of heart. So I thought that's pretty interesting.
Any other, before we go to final thoughts, but
anything else you want to bring up about the
movie? Anything else. Well, I guess it's... People
maybe even forget just how critically praised
this movie was. I mean, it was nominated for
Best Picture. Cameron Crowe was nominated for
Best Screenplay, but not Best Director. It was
kind of odd that it's Best Picture, Best Screenplay,
but not Director. Tom Cruise was nominated There's
a lot like this was like loves at the Oscars
and I think people just Lump it in as a romantic
comedy, but it's a really quality film So in
a lot of great moments and a great performance
by Tom Cruise It I would put it up there as one
of his best maybe his top five Which is impressive
because you look at his career. He has had a
lot of great work All right, we're gonna head

What do you rank it? I'd give it a very solid
three, very heavy three. It's not something I
would rewatch over and over again. I think rewatching
that romantic angle doesn't work as well. Some
of those cheesy lines become a little bit more
cheesy, but I think it's something that is worth
watching. And if you're a sports movie fan, I
think the positive thing about it is if you're...
It's it's a cloud crowd pleaser You can guys
can get something out of it because of the sports
angle if you're fan of romantic comedies There's
something in there for you as well So I don't
think everything works in it like we mentioned
but enough is there to give it a very solid three
I Did have this on DVD for the longest time Now
though I would say you know rent it from iTunes
or you know I don't know. I'm like between a
high two to a high three because I just Like
I said, I don't think this is one that I could
watch more than maybe once every three or four
years It's a good movie. I'm not saying it's
not a good movie But it's just like to me this
doesn't seem like one of those ones where hey
I turn on TNT and it kind of was this time because
obviously I was like oh hey I have a podcast
coming up that I need to record for this I should
probably watch this since it's on but like those
movies that come on USA and TNT and TBS and Family
Chan you know those movies like Transformers
Revenge of the Fallen or like G .I. Joe Rise
of Cobra or you know those movies that the channels
currently always play those to me are movies
that I can put on and either watch or fall asleep
to This really isn't one of those ones where
I would put it on to Just lay there and watch
it. I don't know. I just It's the writing is
too deep and as we said at some points, it's
a little too convoluted. So If they erased the
the love story, it just kept it all about the
sports maybe I would be able to do so and watch
it more but Obviously that would take out the
main You know part of the main thing that made
the movie so good oh Boy all right, so I think
that's gonna do it for us We hope you enjoyed
this episode of NY I wish you'll join us next
time when we will be continuing the 90s flashback
with episode 97 the fifth element Yay, Alice
before she learned to talk anyway For now, I
am tfd1mike with movie revolt and Thank you for
listening keep those film reels rolling I was
just about to tell you That I love him I do I
love him. I love him I don't care what you think.
I love him for the man he wants to be and I love
him for the man that he almost is. I love him,
Laurel. I love him. I love him. You gotta be
fair to her. She loves you. If you don't love
her, you've got to tell her. What if we got married?
If I said that we'd... Would you stay? No, no.
Don't do that. Don't say that, Liz. Well, say
it if you want to. Will you marry me? Jerry Maguire,
take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife.
And do you, Dorothy Boy, take this man to be
your lawfully wedded husband. I now pronounce
you husband and wife. I pretended that proposal
by the car was real. And it might have just been
a hypothetical. I did this. And at least I can
do something about it now. So this break is a
break up. Come on, Jerry. You know this is...
Get rid of me. How about that? I'm just my wife.
