About this Episode

We continue our look at the Police Academy series by diving into the third entry, Back in Training. We discuss the shifting dynamics as the original recruits are now sergeants tasked with training a new, quirky class of cadets to save their school from being closed. We cover the return of familiar faces like Commandant Lassard, Proctor, and Mauser, and share our thoughts on how this film stacks up against its predecessors.

Sentinel online now loading the geek cast radio

network of podcasts Hello and welcome to the

53rd episode of the MWIRE movie we can review.

Today we are going to be continuing the DVD spotlight

on the Police Academy films. I am TFJU and Mike

and as usual I'm joined by Steve Megatron. Hello.

Hello. I think between last week and this week,

I've podcasted over 20 hours total. Not surprising.

No, you have no idea. You have no idea this is

like This is new for me normally I don't record

so much in a week and a half or two weeks span

but And I've mentioned this several times in

these episodes, but there was that Saturday This

past Saturday where I was on that six -hour radio

free Cybertron San Diego comic -con coverage

in which In that case, I say you're crazy. And

then there was the... Then there was Tooncast

65, Sunday night, Nerd News Sunday afternoon.

We're doing all these this week. So if you add

those up, what, half hour, 40 minutes each? Plus,

last night I recorded two hours on two different

shows, one hour for Toycat, one hour and change

for Toycast, one hour and change for ATTF. So

yeah, it's like 10, 11, 15 maybe, 15 hours. Cool.

What have you been up to? Wish I was podcasting,

but no, I've been at various job hell forums,

I don't know. Basically trying to stop from being

complained at So I'm throwing the ball per se

back in their court to Let them eat their own

words Hmm Because yeah No, I'm getting chewed

out for doing my own job That's turn this into

a headshot because I'm not gonna complain. I'm

just yeah I get chewed out for doing my job,

which consists of three job specifications. It's

just that my primary job boss is pissed because

I'm helping the other departments when I don't

have anything to do. Sounds like you're in an

office space. Yes, it is getting very much like

that and... I am the computer tech for the entire

dealership so when something goes wrong I have

to go do it because nobody else can do it and

we're ordering new computers for half the areas

there and I have to set them all up because again

nobody knows how to do all the stuff that's associated

with it like getting them ready for people to

actually use So without me doing that, you know,

I mean I can still get my primary job 90 % of

the way done. It's just that the little extras

that I should be doing I don't have time for

and so yeah that's what I get chewed for. So

basically I'm not gonna do any of it and then

I'm gonna wait till people bitch at my boss and

so on and so forth. Creates a nice little opportunity

there then everybody else is going against him

and he's getting chewed instead of me Yes Actually,

this isn't really the place I wanted to thank

him, but I Will be getting a war for Cybertron

optimus from Godspeed. He said he had an extra

one. He'd send it to me. So that and I got to

order in to Hasbro toy shop. Hopefully it actually

goes through currently it's still on my bank

account is pending so thank God but hopefully

they don't screw it up and say oh those are on

pre -order like they do with my original War

for Cybertron toy order from Mighty Mugs exclusive

2010 SDCC Prowl which I just and again we're

getting massively off topic of movies but I just

realized something with the addition of Prowl

the Autobots will have the upper hand in the

Mighty Mug form In my collection more than mugs

the eye Well I was Anyways, um See what else

Yeah, that's that's pretty much it it's it's

kind of been a slow week I wish Friday would

hurry the hell up and get here. Other than the

random podcasting we've been doing? Yeah, well

it's not so much random. This little police academy

week isn't random or week and a half or however

long the hell we get to do these damn things

because holy crap. Speaking of which... Police

Academy 3 Back in Training is the third film

in the Police Academy film series. Released on

March 21st, 1986, the MPAA gave the film a PG

rating for silly violence and references to body

parts. I like body part comments. When did you

first see this one? Um, I think I've seen this

one like probably... Couple months later after

I seen the other ones just because my dad Decided

it would be funny to watch some more of them

and I of course Would not complain because I

actually prefer This film and the fourth film

being that they're pretty much sandwiched in

the middle Better than the others in my opinion

It shows some of them progressing through So

I mean it's it's just I like the films in general.

It's just they they keep getting better Yeah

a certain point where they'll plateau and kind

of go back reverse. Yep I Don't think you would

say that these are better than the than the first

one though No I would say the fourth one would

be pretty much tied arm -in -arm or that has

more to do with that you have the dynamic of

Harris back. Right. Oh yeah. I'd agree with that.

It's been a while since I've seen these especially

a lot of these later ones. I mean I specifically

remember four because it used to come on TV all

the time. So, I guess getting into the plot here,

the movie begins in a large garage structure

where Captain Proctor, oh boy, played by Lance

Kinsey, and Commandant Mouser, oh wait, they,

what, where's Lassard, dammit, they made Mouser

a commandant, what the fuck? Oh boy. Meet up

with former Police Academy cadets, now sergeants,

Chad Copeland, Kyle blanks oh crap they're sergeants

and oh god like I said it's been a while since

I've seen this so this is all very shocking to

me it seems one of the two police Academy schools

is getting the axe and Mauser wants Copeland

and blanks to make sure that Lissard screws up

after going after the governor's speech in which

he will appoint a committee to evaluate which

of the two schools should remain open. Mauser

starts getting an edge by kissing up to the governor,

offering the committee an escort, showing the

governor pages of useful tactics, etc. Commandant

Lassard, played by George Gaines, gets an idea

how to win, along with now Sergeant Jones, played

by Michael, oh, Michael Winslow, yay, cool, and

Lieutenant Callahan. Laid by Leslie Easterbrook.

He calls back Sergeant Mahoney. Uh -oh. And Sergeant

Hightower. So Mahoney, Hightower, and Tackleberry

are all sergeants now to help train the new recruits.

Among the new recruits are Sergeant Flackler's

wife. Oh no. Well, at least we all know she'll

run and jump in her nightie on a car. Yeah, so

yesterday when we released police Academy to

I was right Fackler is the moron that that has

The accident prones for everybody else So the

new recruits are Fackler's wife sweet Chuck Zed

well what the hell wait a minute Why the hell

is the villain from two a recruiting three that's

yeah that makes no fuck they liked him so much

that they decided to bring him back and couldn't

figure out a way of doing it without making him

a good guy which I can't stand the damn character

honestly I mean yeah there's just not enough

good things I can say I just I don't like his

annoying demeanor and how he acts. I would have

rathered that they didn't bring him back but

since he's as a cadet I actually like him better

as a cop than the villain. Just because he's

quirky and stupid. I'd rather have him as a cop

than the villain. Honestly, no disrespect to

Bobcat. I honestly can't stand him at all as

an actor. I cannot either. I mean... Just his

voice alone. Oh god, yeah. Yeah. Oh, let's see

here. The committee think they were hopeless.

Mouser wants them out on the field soon, knowing

the committee will be there. The recruits fail

and are teased by Mouser and Proctor. However,

Mahoney gets back at them by taping Mouser's

eyes closed while doing a taste test. Proctor

succeeds in removing the tape, but the tape pulls

off Mouser's eyebrows. Oh god. I love how Mahoney

does this stuff to him. Oh damn. I need to get

that Police Academy collection set. It is such

a good collection of movies. Oh damn. Both Lassard

and Mahoney give a pep talk to each of the cadets

before training resumes at the police person's

ball. Okay. Mahoney meets up with his hooker

friend from the first film and has her do a favor

on Proctor after he insults Mahoney and Adams.

Copeland accidentally spills punch on Mrs. Hurst

and Mauser tries to interfere. Meanwhile, the

hooker tricks Proctor into removing his clothes

and then locking him out of the hotel room, much

to the dismay of onlookers. He goes out and steals

a car and drives into the academy. The car is

out of gas, however, and Proctor enters a building.

However, the building he walks into is the Blue

Oyster Bar. Uh -oh. Hey, they're gonna have fun

with him tonight. Oh, God. That can't be right.

That just... That's just... Oh, boy. Uh, Malter

insults Lassard in front of the recruits by telling

them he is a winning... After he pestered Hearst

so much that Hearst made him believe he was winning.

So Mahoney gets him back by giving a speech at

the ball and then putting the microphone in a

pitcher of water. When Mouser grabbed it, it

electrocutes him. Why is it every time I look

at that character's name I keep seeing Mouser

and I keep thinking of Baxter Stockman's Mousers?

I just hear chomp chomp chomp. On the final day

of the cadet training slash evaluation competition,

one person from each school attends the governor's

wall. Proctor misunderstands and sends in two,

one of whom portrayed by David James Elliott,

Copeland, and Blanks play with the computer system,

and as cars are sent to the wrong locations but

are caught by hooks who... punches them out cold

at a governor's party the gang of thieves dressed

as busboys kidnap hedges and take the governor

hostage but the squad arrives in time to save

the day and rescue the governor. Lassard's school

stays open and the epilogue shows Lassard making

a speech on how the Academy is grateful for the

many many many recruits the graduating class

salutes to the camera before the movie ends.

Wow. That's right. Well, of course, I'm just

reading script, but that's not actually surprising

I did not expect some of the funny stuff in this

Yeah, and I definitely like the going back and

forth between the two schools yeah, although

in the end you always know what's going to be

the sard that wins because Yeah, and it's his

cadets which are actually now sergeants that

are saving his ass I like how they've promoted

everybody. I don't agree with Captain Mouser.

I don't agree with Commandant Mouser and Captain

Proctor. I don't agree with that crap. But all

the recruits from the first and second film being

sergeants and all that, I like that. I like that

they all got promoted. That... Nagoda was quite

hilarious as he was falling head over heels for

Callahan throughout the entire movie. And some

of the comments that just fly back and forth

between those two are just kind of strange. Yeah.

Well, it couldn't be any stranger. than the fake

accented French guy from the first film. Oh yeah,

that's different entirely. True. Like Callahan

says something to him. She's like, you had impressive

moves for Cadet. And he's like, thank you. You

see, it's a matter of the mind being mightier

than the bosom. And then she puts interesting

theory. Proctor as usual comes up with dumb dumb

comments Yeah, you know I mean I like to I thought

it was funny as hell that he had to run outside

and grab trash cans cover himself up with the

lids But yeah, he says Mahoney must think he's

as dumb as we are It's like Proctor you need

to you know get schooled a little bit because

Unless you have something smart to say shut your

pie hole. Yeah Yeah So, what did you think of

this one overall? I mean, did you like it? It's

one of my favorites of the series Between between

the first four, I mean obviously the first one's

going to be one of the best Yeah, but I find

this one to be it's below the first one in terms

of me liking it But it's still they're all still

perfectly funny. I mean I would this would be

my top three of the seven yeah, I think you know

now that I've gone through the plot here and

and kind of refresh my memory of the film because

as I said the only one I as I've said over the

last week that we've been releasing these the

only one I have is the is there's the first film

on DVD but this could easily have been the sequel

and just take out what police academy 2 was and

just make this like Like, take out that entire

plot in that whole film. You could still call

this Police Academy 2 their first assignment

or whatever the hell you want to call it. But

this could have easily been the first sequel.

Yeah, I honestly don't like the second film that

much. It's kind of like, and what's sad is I

like some of the ones from later better than

the second one. Yeah, even without Mahoney in

it. They've got the other Lassard that is in

there and Yeah, it fills the role of Mahoney

because between him and The Winslow yes the one

Winslow plays they are Bill Jones yes, they they

go pretty much pull the same pranks that Mahoney

would do and Larville would do so I mean it's

it's kind of funny to see that go on but I I

would I don't know I don't like the second film

that much the this one it's gonna let a funny

moments especially between you know what's going

on with Mauser and Proctor yeah just because

Mauser shows how much of a moron he is with his

choosing of his cadets, and yeah, just, I mean,

there's just so many funny moments that go on

that it's just amazing that they could keep straight

faces during some of this. Yeah, yeah, I agree.

I think, oh yeah, I don't know what to ask here.

How much did Larvel have to do in this one? I

mean, did he do any sound effects in this one?

Yeah, he had some in here. I haven't had a chance

to go back over and look at the clips. I'm pretty

much going to take for funny clips, I'm going

to take some funny clips if I can gather some,

and a bunch of larval clips. Yeah. and put them

at the end just because, yeah, it's just, he's

got a lot of the better parts in some of the

movies. Yes, I guess getting into the reaction

slash reception, the film grossed $43 ,579 ,163

in the U .S., making it the 17th highest -grossing

film of 1986. In the U .S., the film had competition

from films such as Top Gun, Crocodile Dundee,

Star Trek IV, The Voyage Home, The Karate Kid

Part II, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, when released

on VHS. It grossed 21 million dollars in the

U .S. You would think that, even though this

is a sequel, but you would think that this film

would have gotten lost amongst the ones I just

listed. Yeah, they do seem to get lost pretty

easy in the mix of the many. You have anything

else you want to say about Police Academy 3?

I would definitely put this on my must watch

list of the films. There's a lot of hilarious

moments. I like the fact that, you know, Mouser's

trying to kiss ass to the governor to make Lassard

look bad and then you've got Larville when Mouser

starts talking. he's like all I want to say is

and then Laravel goes and then the governor just

looks at him like what the hell is wrong with

this guy and then Lassard comes up says a couple

comments to the the governor and then Mauser's

like what I meant to say was and then Laravel

goes over and goes Police chief of pretty much

the state comes up to him and says stop talking,

you know But yeah, it's Larvel's got a lot of

the funny stuff Throughout the film But yeah,

it is at the same time funny watching these new

new cadets that they're schooling Yeah, it's

like It's like when you start a job and you get

the people that are experienced sitting there,

you know screwing with them. Yep. On purpose,

just to see how they react and make fun of them.

Somehow this reminds me of a certain car dealership

you work at. It wouldn't be far from it, except

for it's not quite as funny as these films. I

wish that we had some guy like Larville there

making sound effects and doing crazy crap like

that. Yeah. Pretending to do kung fu and move

in the mouth. and doing beeping sounds when everything

quits working. Oh, I just had a horrible, horrible

idea. He could do a beeping sound every time

somebody goes in or comes out of the bathroom.

Like a truck backing up sound. That would be

hilarious. Yeah. That'd be horrible. So many

people would be like, stop doing that to me.

What the hell is going on here? Alright, so I

think that's it for this episode. Dude, we don't

have anything else we want to bring up, do we?

No, but yeah, like I said, it's not the best

of the films, but it's still among them. You'll

be laughing pretty much from beginning to end

Zed scenes are a little awkward, but You'll get

over that. It's just it'll kind of glaze over

them It's just making note that he's now a cadet

instead of a guy of crime Yeah, well, you know

Bobcat himself is a little Yeah, he's a little

out there, but you'll get over that. It's it's

not that big of a deal It's not like some other

people from some other movies that I could name

that I don't like when he goes Are you making

fun of Jerry Chase? No, okay Oh Lord Oh Lord

Callahan. Oh, you've come to the right place,

brother. Grab yourself a pad and pencil, because

the love doctor is about to speak. I said it.
