This is bad comedy. Hello and welcome to Movie

Week in Review. We are celebrating the monumental

episode 100 here on our 4 year anniversary show.

And no haha from the peanut gallery there. Yeah,

it's like it's like TV you we just roll with

it. There's a roll with it, right? It's very

autobot Lee of you. Who is that jerked off? Oh,

wait a minute. I may introduce myself That's

in the next line spreading that double -d double

dinobot DNA all over the place Anyways, we're

covering all things Star Trek, not double Dinobot

DNA or double dumbass on you. Oh wait, that is

a Star Trek quote. I am your host, Steve Megatron

Phillips, and joining me in this episode of Epic

Proportions is... DFTO and Mike. And Peek On

The Court Michael. Hey, how's it going? Hey,

it's the trio again. Yes, that's right. Would

have been a quartet, but there was a solo problem

with internet, so... You know, we couldn't hand

that back to him. I almost had that last week,

actually. Good thing we weren't recording last

week, then. Yeah, well, we were scheduled to,

and then my computer went... That's funny. Yeah,

well, luckily I figured it out quickly and fixed

the issue, but... Well, if I was scared there,

I thought I was gonna be without a computer for

a while. Yeah, the board took his computer over,

ladies and gentlemen. The board. The board! You

know my headphones are on I can hear you, but

yeah, I'm just not sure what you said That'll

be an ongoing issue here the sound design that

nobody's home Can't hear you la la la So yes,

so before we get into this I understand that

this is technically not a show for the general

conversation For for the movie we can review

that is but this is a warranted special coverage

with reasoning that it has as many films as they've

had over the years and this franchise has been

going on almost 50 years now and has changed

the face of science fiction forever that's true

and plus when we first conceived of MWIRE we

originally before we even had the first episode

out on iTunes or wherever we originally slated

100 to be all things Star Trek Like right at

the genesis of the show Steve and I said 75 is

Star Wars 100 is Star Trek actually we argued

back and forth which was going to be which and

you're like no 100 has to be Star Trek We're

finally here though Yes, finally 100 is a big

number. I mean that's that's a lot of podcasts.

Oh, yeah, what's sadder is That or more sad because

I don't think that's an actual word. Um, it took

four years to do Not only that Being that it

was one of the founding shows Shoot GCR still

not there yet Is the fact that turn off his AC

Sorry, yep, that should turned off his AC go

ahead but anyways, um We've done probably I don't

know like over a thousand episodes I would guess

between all the shows not all of us have been

on all of them easily other than like um so yes

because I have no life thank you and he confirms

it for the world and right now he's roasting

in his oven of an apartment with no AC yeah him

and his floor nuts roasting on an open fire a

a Yes, I did record them out of order. So briefly,

how did you get into Star Trek? I Was a TNG kid,

you know Picard and wharf Geordi all you know

number one All that entire show is what I watched

as a kid in it, you know, 7, 8, 9 years old,

87, 88, 89. So, for me, that was my Star Trek.

I would say that I'm more of a casual fan. I'm

nowhere near a die -hard Star Trek fan. I pick

Star Wars over Star Trek any day. But I do enjoy

the franchise. I do enjoy certain aspects of

it. In the early 90s, I had to move with my dad

and my stepmom, and the choice was, for Sunday

mornings, you could either watch reruns of Classic

Trek or go to church. So I begrudgingly sat through

reruns of Classic Trek. Don't get me wrong, I

don't believe that Classic Star Trek is bad at

all, it's just if you're forced to do something,

you don't want to do it. Um, and I, as a kid,

starting off with TNG and then going back to

the classic, I just didn't care for the show

as a kid. I haven't gone back recently and watched

it, but I just, I didn't care. Uh, the first

Star Trek movie I ever saw was First Contact,

as far as like seeing in a theater. Um, and I

love that. I thought that was great. I kind of

miss out on Generations. I still have yet to

see that. Which, that's the whole point of the

upcoming Star Trek Spotlight here on MWIRE, is

we'll all watch the movies again. I have absolutely

no interest in motion picture through undiscovered

country. I don't have the time, I don't have

the energy to try to track them all down. When

the reboot happened, like right now, that crew...

That's my kirkensbach at this point with with

JJ Abrams reboot So that's where I'm kind of

coming from the only comic as far as that goes

and we'll bring this up later the only comic

I've ever read was the Star Trek 21 from IDW

the after darkness, which is the quote -unquote

Comic sequel to the current Star Trek film out.

The games, never played any of them. The books

and the comics, like I said, I've never really

read any of them. So that's where I'm coming

from. Michael? Uh, you know, I'm, I'm older,

so I... Yes, yes you are. You're 40, damn it.

So I watched the original series long before

there was the next generation. Uh, and yeah,

I was a big... You know Kirk fan Shatner fan,

let's say, you know from way back when But I

like, you know, like you my love of Star Wars

overshadows my love of Star Trek And by the time

the next generation came out Yeah, I was in college

I didn't have time to watch it I in fact it was

kind of like Beast Wars for me and Transformers

where you know Beast Wars came out and I'm off

Living my life, you know, I just didn't notice

it. It came and went I couldn't I couldn't be

expected to find myself in front of a television

at any given point in time And this was long

before DVR So no, I never saw any of those. It

was years later that I started catching next

generation on on cable You know in syndication

But no, I was a big original series fan And and

then you know by the time DS 9 came out I started

watching more TV because I was you know working

in a night stay up late and watch it But Voyager

I want to say Voyager was like a guilty pleasure

of mine, especially by the time seven of nine

came out Jerry Ryan came came to the show I know

in that cat suit. I know I actually went to Chicago

and sat in line to meet her once and Yeah, it

was like oh Yeah, she's like the prettiest girl

ever like the holy grail has been reached Exactly,

and then by the time enterprise came out, you

know, it's like oh, I'm in I'm all in you know

All my cards on the table deal me in And I was

really disappointed When enterprise did not get

to seven seasons Series since the original yeah,

and a tng made seven seasons ds9 made seven seasons

voyager made seven seasons There's absolutely

no reason why enterprise couldn't have gone on

for seven seasons And everybody knows that it

takes at least two seasons for syndication well

not syndication, but for a truck Series to find

its feet. Yeah Mean, honestly boy list to begin

with. Yeah. Well the first season of Enterprise

was like Ryker didn't have his beard yet You

know those there was he got to find your feet

the first couple seasons of Voyager. Oh boy.

Were they bad? Yeah, it's just like oh, oh, this

is awful But no, I really enjoyed the first season

of Enterprise the second season Maybe a little

less because they were making some questionable

decisions, but I had high hopes for like a third

season I don't know You know and I'm one of those

that really enjoyed the movies in the theaters

Some of them I was kind of wishing I hadn't seen

in the theaters, but You know like you first

contact. Oh, well probably one of my favorite

trek movies You know mainly because I hadn't

seen Wrath of Khan in the theater. I was way

too little back then yeah I saw Return of the

Jedi in the theater. That came out about the

same time. When did Wrath of Khan get released?

82. 82, yeah. Yeah, you were old enough. You

were almost 10 years old at that point. Yeah,

I probably could have gone, I suppose. But, you

know, I didn't have any friends that were hardcore

Star Trek fans at the time. I don't think Star

Trek fans skew into that age range, honestly.

I think that's more the... You know science fantasy

crowd star wars that type of thing. It's when

you get in the college When you start learning

more about science and technology and it occurs

to you that holy crap all this stuff in TNG is

plausible Yeah At that point you become more

of a fan. It's a it's a it's a it's really older

age group Yeah I don't see how Riker is even

in Enterprise, since Enterprise took place 100

years before Kirk. Why is Riker in Enterprise?

You said Riker didn't have his beard yet. No,

I meant TNG. The first season of TNG. It was

really kind of slow. I mean there wasn't yeah

an enterprise and I'm like wait a second Clarify

I was I was I was making a point there that that

they they shouldn't have cancelled enterprise

so early because Historically, it takes a couple

of seasons for Star Trek series to find their

feet. Yeah What about you Steve? Where did you

start? Where do I begin at the beginning? Well,

at the beginning, I was... No, never mind. No,

the thing that started for me was both my parents

grew up on Star Trek, the original series. So

we kind of had a tradition that when new episodes

would come out every week of The Next Generation,

we would watch them when they would air. And

in between during the week... Yeah, I mean it

was great we we watched it every week that was

kind of just you know The only time that the

TV was allowed to be on during dinner Wow Literally

We would ignore phone calls at dinner, so I mean

if Star Trek was a big thing your parents were

hardcore Yeah, we didn't have TVs in our room.

Well, I should scratch that I didn't have a TV

in my room when I moved out My brother's got

TVs in their rooms. So But that's another story

No, so I mean we watched the next generation

every week My mom ordered me This dates it to

a bunch of VHS tapes of the original series and

the next generation that we get to watch and

also caught reruns of the original series on

Sci -fi and other channels that played it at

the time. So I mean, it was one of those things

that I just, I grew up on it and then one of

my birthdays in the early 90s, I think it was

right after The Undiscovered Country came out.

It was probably in 92 when it was on VHS and

everything. I got the six film, VHS collection

where you put every film side -by -side and it

would show the enterprise. Oh Yeah, I've seen

those I had that entire set So I watched the

crap out of all the VHS tapes all the time So

whenever I was playing in the basement, I was

watching Star Trek primarily it was Star Trek

6 which was my favorite and it still is one of

my favorites to this day, but It's Also, I have

the infatuation with the Enterprise a yeah for

whatever reason but No, I mean that's pretty

much what started me out in the entire franchise

and I just from there I watched DS 9 I watched

the Star Trek films the only Star Trek film I've

missed in theater out of between 7 and 12 now

I missed Insurrection in theater, which I'm kind

of glad. You're not missing much. Well, I've

and I'll get into that, too. That film is, as

I stated in Future Imperfect with Dodd, is it's

basically a run on two parter TNG episode. Basically,

it's it's not even really a film. The rest of

them were films. This was it felt like it should

have been in TNG. In the series it even played

the intro outro music of the TV show. Yeah, so

But I like where it's like like they're gonna

they're gonna lose the rights to something if

they don't hurry up and use it Yeah, so they

just we're like, I will slide it in there and

be slick about it together. Yeah and then I Watched

es9 and I watched the first season and then kind

of got out of it just cuz it bored me It was

a little too out there for me. Although if I

would have stuck with it after season 3 it got

great. So Same thing with Voyager. I watched

the first season and then I started getting a

job and I just I didn't care anymore and then

Enterprise I really didn't care because they

superseded a lot of Stuff that happened in the

original series like first appearances of certain

aliens technologies appearing They were basically

retconning stuff from the other four series,

so it kind of threw me for a loop. But yeah,

that's pretty much where I got into it. Scott

Bakula will always be Sam for me. I don't care

how many people tell me, oh, we'll give Enterprise

a chance. I'm sorry. Anything 100 years before

Kirk, that's like saying... Hordak was around

100 years before the birth of Prince Adam, you

know, I just there's no way that I would After

we finish this episode I'm probably actually

gonna go back and go through TNG on Netflix and

in DS 9 because I remember really enjoying DS

9 Voyager I'll have to pick no I will argue though

that going back and watching them. I Enjoyed

them more now that I can sit there and understand

them and appreciate them. I'm sure Enterprise

would be the same way if I gave it a chance,

but I'm not going to yet until I have to watch

it for Future Imperfect. Overall, it's mostly

been television and film, it seems, for the three

of us. I know, Steve, you've done some of the

stuff with the games and stuff. had my hand in

every part of Trek. That sounds so wrong. I didn't

finger Trek. I just said I had my hand on it.

I didn't play with it. Oh, boy. All right. But

yeah, so since that's our brief intro, we'll

be back after the following clips. with Star

Trek the series. Space. The final frontier. These

are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its

continuing mission. To explore strange new worlds.

To seek out new life and new civilizations. To

boldly go where no one has gone before. And we're

back to cover the series of Star Trek and want

to take a guess at how many series there are?

That's a rhetorical question. It's written down

somewhere, crap. I know. It could be in the script.

Six. Six series, so apparently seven did not

eat nine. And ten. That's including the animated

series? Yes. Yes. There's the original series,

the animated series, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise.

And then of course there's various fan and actor

revivals that have gone on beyond that. Some

of those are pretty good. I'm really not to go

too far off topic, but I'm really looking forward

to Star Trek Renegades. I haven't heard of that.

It's got Admiral Chekhov. Nice. And you have

Tuvok. And those two are the head of Starfleet

security. And there's something going on with

Starfleet where it's not quite right. And so

Chekhov sends Tuvok with the renegade band of

Starfleet officers and non -Starfleet. gear and

ships and weaponry to try and figure out what's

going on and the conspiracy and everything and

try and correct everything. It's a series they're

working on and it's coming along fairly well.

There's no episodes yet, but there's trailers.

Oh, there was an episode. I forget the name of

it, but they they do a really good job of Recreating

the original series sets and and there's a of

guys and men Is that the one where Sulu is old?

No Now there's this There's this episode that

they literally it's fan made and they they brought

oh Hack they brought George to cut George to

Kay. Sorry into it George to Kay and to Kay is

he's old Sulu exactly Yeah, they take old Sulu

and old Sulu was in a transporter accident or

something and he was beamed to a planet and and

he had to live there for 50 years and he had

a daughter and then they somehow beamed him and

his daughter back to the enterprise and so you've

got young Sulu and old Sulu in the same the thing

and at the end I won't tell you how it ends but

it's just very interesting because you've got

like this you know savage land Sulu who's 70

years old and he's you know protecting his daughter

from from the lecherous Kirk, because he knows

exactly what Kirk wants to do with her. Take

her back to his quarters. Have you learned about

kissing on your planet? I'm surprised, you know,

I'm surprised you haven't heard of this. I want

to look it up now on the internet. Of God's Men

has Oprah and Chekhov and John Harriman. Ah.

See I would I would I would love to see nowadays

John Chu and George Takei get together and have

young and old Sulu they kind of like what they

did in the captains with Shat and fine fine.

Well, they've done that with Spock and Spock

No a car commercial. Oh, that was awesome That's

just it's terrible. It's like you got like letter

D way I don't know. He's like smoking a joint

in the car or something. He's just poking around.

There was a video recently. I forget what the

band is. I forget the name. I'm so woefully unprepared

here. But it had Nemoy and he's just putting

her around his house in his underwear. And then

he rolls himself out of bed and goes to the grocery

store and he's like pushing his cart around.

And, you know, just being mean to people. It's

just a really awful old man. And then, like,

pulls out a joint in the middle of the grocery

store, and they have to escort him off the premises

or something. So he's basically Galvatron gone

nuts. Oh, yeah, basically. It's a... Yeah, it's

like an insane nemoi. Just being a dick in his

neighborhood. Nobody likes him. Hmm. Kind of

wish I had again really wish I'd remembered this

this is recent. This isn't too long ago Someone's

gonna hear this and be like I know that one Maybe

mention it in the comments or something. But

yes, it was hilarious to feedback at geek cast

radio calm It's one of those things I want to

say I tweeted about it within the last year Anyway

what continue on I'm sorry anyways So what are

some of your favorite of the of the series? We're

just gonna kind of do like a rough overview of

all of them So that we don't get too in -depth

with every one of them just kind of do a rundown

of each one that you may or may not remember

and elements of them that you liked For me with

TOS even though as a kid I didn't care for it

You still have all the classic lines Classic

Spock lines, the Vulcan nerve pinch and, you

know, Scotty and all that his comedy entails

and everything else. And that's what I enjoyed

about that series. Again, I'm going to have to

go back eventually and rewatch the series now

and see if any of it really. I think my problem

with watching the original series is when I watched

the Captain's documentary, they showed different

clips and stuff from the original series. And

the picture is just so bad. I know it's 60s television.

I get it. But hell, Batman 66 looks better than

Star Trek. Maybe it was the film degradation.

I don't know. Maybe it was the kind of film they

used back then. I'm not sure. but I just cannot

watch it now because of the way it looks. It

has nothing to do with the fact that I'm not

gonna watch it because of, oh, I hate the series.

It doesn't look good to me at all as far as the

overall film. The animated series, I can safely

say I've never seen it. I don't even think I

even want to see it. I know eventually we will

get to it on Tooncast Beyond, but right now,

did they hold over any voice actors? Did they

use any of the original people for voices? I

think they did. Yes, they used every one. And

I don't think that they had Leonard Nimoy in

it. No, they replaced it with some Catgirl. Yeah.

See, that's so funny. You know what's funny?

James Doohan did all the voices for just about

everybody in that. Oh, sweet. Like all the extras.

If you watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the

current series. and I wanna say it's Donatello

that's really into the, oh what's it called?

It's called something like Space Heroes or something.

I don't know. No, it's it's Leo. He's into the

Star Trek. Yeah. Yeah, I know exactly what you're

doing It's a huge ripoff on Star Trek the animated

series to the point where somebody was asking

about that online like What is that supposed

to be and it's like and you kids nowadays, you

know So so yeah, I was actually sending out links

to people like check this out. You're gonna love

this stuff. Yeah With TNG, I absolutely love

it. Again, I'm going to have to rediscover a

lot of it, but I love all those characters. Every

single one of those characters has something

great about them. Between Picard, between Riker,

between Geordi, all of them have something unique

and awesome to offer for that series. DS9...

I remember it, but I don't remember it that well.

I remember enjoying it. Voyager and Enterprise,

I just don't care. What about you, Michael? That's

funny. I want to interject there about DS9. I

remember toward the end, they kept having these

Dominion Wars episodes. They were really cool.

There was a lot of really neat scenes. Then there

would be, Throw away baseball episode. Oh, my

dad needs a baseball. It's like screw your dad.

I want to see ships blowing up in space, man

I want to see another gem of dar splatter. It's

awesome But uh, yeah, no, I mean favorite moments

for me are mostly revolver on the original series,

you know You've got a lot of damage him, you

know, and you've got a lot of You know, i'm giving

it all she got she kept taking them all you know,

it's that type of thing that That's kind of ingrained

in my head and pops out when you know when I

least expect it But yeah, I mean like I said

next generation wasn't so much my thing and I

really didn't get into the series again until

Voyager and Voyager and DS9 were running concurrently.

So once it occurred to me that Star Trek was

pretty cool You know, maybe I'll watch some Voyager

and by then, you know, the Dominion War kicked

in which was again really cool Yeah, it was really

neat and That was That was pretty much it for

me. I mean honestly, I can't look at enterprise

and say oh enterprise was You know chock full

of stuff that That never left me and it was ingrained

into my consciousness because it really wasn't

You know the stuff that's really there with me

forever is gonna be the the old original series

Yeah, and plus really who can really look at

Scott Bakula and not think Sam from quantum leap.

I know You know, it's like the beam in you know,

actually, I think Dean Stockwell did beam in

with at least one episode What about you Steve

Well for me the original series in the next generation

to me are my two favorites just Those are the

two that that resonate the most with me the original

series because I love the cast I Love the characters.

They're they're dynamic how they're relating

to each other They're tight -knit group that

you get to see them go on so many adventures

in the feature films And they are the only cast

or an in crew that have had the most films in

the entire franchise Despite having the shortest

Seasonal series Yeah So I mean I really like

those the next generation I love the the the

new iteration how it continues with the enterprise

and You know this new generation and then you

have characters that are similar to the original

series, but they're their own thing. Oh Yeah,

I mean there's no way in hell you can consider

Ryker As the next Sulu. Yeah, I really I fail

to see the similarities. I think they they went

completely fresh slate They said, you know, the

only character that's returning here is the ship

and Even then you couldn't barely recognize it

well, I mean it was a new you know, it was just

sent, you know a new descendant of the ship,

but You can almost relate that data is like Spock

you could almost you know relate that Riker is

like Kirk. I might buy that. Okay, sure. Which

would be why Riker knows so much about Kirk and

everything throughout the series. I mean, some

of the other characters, yeah, they're new, like

Geordi and the visor thing. Worf being the first,

you know. The Klingon. Klingon, which, you know,

you can almost relate to Ohura in the sense that

she was the first, you know. African American.

African American on the Enterprise bridge. So

I mean, in that sense, it was like a first kind

of a new race type thing on the ship, kind of

breaking boundaries. I'll buy that. But I mean,

other than that, they're all pretty new or something

different. Because you don't have the bones dynamic.

Well, after watching Relics, I would say that

Jordy is, eventually he becomes a little. He

becomes the Scotty, but he doesn't start out

that way. No, not at all But I mean they all

eventually come into their own but I mean some

of their their basics are our original series

And then DS 9 I like it for it's it when it goes

military and they get the defiant That's when

I really start liking it. Yeah, I Didn't really

much care for the station part, but once they

introduced the defiant And it started getting

into the Dominion part then I started liking

that show Voyager I didn't like it till it was

hit or miss to the me on the episodes and then

there's one where they go back to seeing the

Excelsior and to Valk being on the ship and then

The various episodes with Q and then the episode

where Janeway commits genocide of the Borg And

Enterprise like I said, I have no opinion of

but overall I like the entire mess of it the

animated series I know I've lost over that it's

and we covered that in future imperfect that

is a terrible terribly animated show poorly animated

yes very poorly the the voice actors were you

know I mean the actual actors but it was like

they were phoning it in because it was so bad

that's terrible Mean it's I think with today's

technology if they were to do it again and have

an animated series I think it would do well just

for the fact that it would be cheaper to do an

animated series than an actual series. Yeah So

I can see them doing that but they can even go

CGI nowadays and it would be really nice. Oh,

yeah design Yeah, look like the video games.

I mean Yeah, I would I think with, yeah, with

a design. They already have a design. They've

did the video games. That's right. So, I mean,

it was just porting over. If it was written well.

You know, I think right now the franchise is

in a precarious place where as long as the writing

is well done, they, you know, they're going to

jump that shark. A decades long shark. Yes, that

they keep jumping down. Yeah, they messed up

the writing at this point and it's over. Oh,

I know. Look at 2002. You had Nemesis, which

was the final film until Abrams rebooted it in

2009. So it's seven years without a Trek film.

That's the longest span of time without a Star

Trek film since its original 79 release. It also

was the start of the end of Trek because in 2005

they cancelled Enterprise. We're still at a point

now where there's no Trek series and Paramount

and CBS have no ambition to create a new one.

They want to just keep going because I guess

Abrams wanted to bring a new series using the

people and the cast and everything for the new

film. and CBS said, no, we're not letting you

grow this into an expansive universe. You're

just going to do the films. Well, at that point,

the films are a cash cow. So no, you're not going

to let you ruin that. Well, right. And honestly,

at this point in time with the way that television

is nowadays, I don't even though it's Star Trek

and even if you make a series that a lot of the.

Fans any part of the fandom is gonna like if

it doesn't get those ratings I mean the last

two years for like big network television things

we've seen shows last one two three four episodes

before they just immediately pull the plug because

the network isn't getting the ratings that they

want right and I don't want the franchise of

Star Trek to go down that road again. I'm not

saying it's not going to be popular. There's

a huge fan base for Star Trek. I'm just saying

that the networks are all about the money, just

like the studios are. But as you just said, Star

Trek 2009, it turned into a huge cash cow. So

I'd prefer them just making films at this point.

I think after they get done with this next film,

the third one in the rebooted series, I think

they should have a series again. I think it should

come back to TV. Because think about it, this

is a way different tangent, and it kind of touches

on the film aspect. But the feature film universe

is getting over saturated with too much of the

same stuff. So eventually it's going to come

crashing down around them unless they want to

cement it further by having a TV show. Yeah,

there's that I Mean look at superheroes eventually

that wall is going to come crashing down because

they keep putting out Five six superhero movies

a year Right. So I mean movies at least I mean,

I mean it so far if they put out another Fantastic

four, you know that that's That trend would come

to a crashing halt. Well, they're making one

actually If it was done right, it wouldn't. Marvel

phase two is going to come crashing down. I have

a feeling, but that's again another subject.

Someone else died near Blanchard's neighborhood.

Yep. And silence. Anyways. So has everybody touched

on their series favorites? Yeah. We'll move on

to the games, which again, very brief. Do you

guys have any experience with the video games?

I've seen them. I don't have any interest in

playing any of them. I would rather play Super

Return of the Jedi. Super Return of the Jedi

than play any of the Star Trek games. Oh, that

was a cool game. Actually, those games were hard

as hell. Yeah, super Star Wars super super Empire

Strikes Back. Those were hard. I did not get

to the end of that one Anyway, but as far as

Star Trek games go Anyone who plays games and

and like Star Trek knows that There are no good

Star Trek games They've just been historically

very bad games I know There was a game My roommate

played it. I want to say it was like oh Hack

2002 somewhere around there There was a game

it was might have been a Voyager game based on

the unreal engine and my roommate said that was

pretty good and I forget the name of it offhand,

but you can actually walk around the bridge and

They had cameos from certain characters I Never

played it I know they have that MMO that just

came out. Did you play that one Steve? Yeah,

the Star Trek online Yeah, yeah that game was

terrible my buddy my buddy when it was When it

was new actually bought He actually bought the

game and paid to play it and I was like, yeah,

there's no way in hell I'm paying to play that

I waited Year it went free. I would rather play

DC universe online than play that game. Oh So

it's it's already it's already done the the DC

universe I'll talk about the Star Trek MMO. It's

Star Trek online That's been out it's it's been

out like two years now, I think and it's been

free to play for over a year, huh? That's the

kiss of death for MMOs Well, actually, they're

all going in that direction. I mean, even while

I was doing that. Really? The Star Wars MMO started

off really strong from what I had read, and now

they're free to play. Well, they all start out

to pay and then now they're all free to play.

But if you want certain upgrades or the ability

to add expansions or do anything else, they charge

you for any kind of extra. It's basically like

an iPhone or an iPad game where you can buy a

free version and then you have to you know, you

have in -game purchases see I I Don't play MMOs

for one. I just can't I Yeah, I don't I don't

do that But no the most recent game had a crispine

Kirk versus the Gorn That was where'd that go?

Is that is that come out yet? That video game.

Yeah Yeah, it's been out. Mike Dodd, I think,

said he played it and that sci -fi guy and they

said it was a mess. Oh, that's too bad. They

said something about the way proportions were

on the game and some other stuff in it. They

said that there was just user interface issues.

Well, that was supposed to kind of bridge the

gap between the first and the second movies and

show the dynamic between. The crispine Kirk and

me and the new Spock and how they how they became

friends or not so much friends But how they strengthen

their relationship? Not to say I wouldn't play

it though Yeah, well just to see the story I

mean just well what did happen between the first

movie and the first Abrams movie in the second

Abrams movie That would be it would be nice to

play. I swear. I don't think I want to pay 60

bucks for it No, and that's why I didn't get

it Well, you know, maybe next summer it'll be

on the steam summer sale for five bucks pick

it up then Yeah, I would I'd pick it up for five

bucks. I'd pick it up for I'll pick anything

up for five bucks I don't feel bad about chucking

it if I pay five bucks Yeah, exactly. I'll buy

that for a dollar for a dollar I mentioned it

earlier. I don't know if we want to use that

earlier clip I'll take her what but I'll over

every yeah, we'll reach I will go over it again

but originally why the first Trek game that I

ever played was a vector based arcade game and

I might have been ten and you know, I'd have

like My dad would take what me and my sister

to the arcade and just give us a few bucks and

let us play and one of the games was this Star

Trek game and it was literally it had a little

a little enterprise. That was a circle three

lines and you moved it in a 360 degree axis with

a spinner knob and there was a button for torpedoes

and there was a button for phaser I want to say

and then and then there was like thrust and you

would turn your turn your little enterprise in

the direction you wanted to go and Thrust it

forward and then shoot it at Klingons and then

occasionally you'd have to go back to base to

refill your your torpedoes. It was a very simple

game. It had, like, asteroid -like graphics.

It had, like, battle -zone -like graphics. Way

back then. So it's basically Star Trek version

of Space Invaders. Well, I would say Star Trek

Asteroids. I mean, Space Invaders wasn't vector

-based. If you know what vector -based graphics

are. It's like that, uh... It was like little

lines on the screen. You know, it wasn't like

pixels. Yeah, anyway, but a long time ago. I

think it was the first Star Trek game that ever

come out and and Play the hell out of that thing.

I must have put like a thousand quarters into

it over over the You know the course of however

long my dad would take us That's an exaggeration,

but yeah, yeah, yeah, I Are you done here? No,

go ahead. It exhausts my knowledge of Star Trek

video games. I don't know much about them. Okay.

I feel like they're all bad. Yeah, I will agree.

They are all bad. Every last one of them, especially

the ones that were in DOS. Oh, yeah. There were

a lot of DOS based games and I read about those,

but I've never played any. Surprisingly enough

there's Close to I think close to 50 games Of

Star Trek are we talking like video game like

always back face like like there's a path before

you which way do you go north 1971 was the text

based and the 1972 was a script game and then

the rest of them were visual Wow 79 through 2013

holy cow I didn't get a computer until 93 mmm

yeah something like that yeah I had that I had

to buy my own computer for college but yeah that

was that was a long time ago No, I will argue

that. But still not like 73. Geez, I mean, I

didn't even know there were computers in 73,

let alone Star Trek games. It was Apple computers

and Atari. Like a Commodore. Yeah. 64 games.

So apparently Commodore 64 games were supposed

to be really cool way back in the day. But I

didn't know there was Star Trek games. Now, there

were Star Trek games for the computer. I want

to say they were almost like Wing Commander games.

Yeah, there were several of that type. Yeah.

But bad, I guess. Bad Wing Commander knockoffs

or something. Basically, the general rule of

Star Trek games is, as Steve said, they're all

bad. Now let me ask you guys this. Is there any

studios, maybe, a certain high moon that could

actually make a good Star Trek game? Because,

after all, Hymen did make two good Transformers

games. I think they could. I would be... I wish

they would, honestly, because there's a trend

over the years. And I'll kind of just go over

it. There's a bunch of different studios, but

the most common in there is Simon and Schuster.

Yeah. Which did many of them. Interplay Entertainment,

which is, my guess, no longer around. Interplay

used to make some good games back in the day.

Yeah, back in the day, like I used to have the

Star Trek, the 25th anniversary game for DOS,

and it was a terrible game. You had to point

and tell it where to go. But there was no instructions

on what to do. Yeah. And I eventually got stuck

in a cave and couldn't figure out how to get

out to get past the first episode. That's awful.

And there's like 13 in the game or something

like that. Yeah. And then I had The Next Generation

of Final Unity, which I didn't get to play, but

it was by Microprose, which was another studio

that did several kind of good games at the time.

Yeah. Star Trek Borg, I've seen video. They actually

had video in that to go along with the game.

Like they had Q running the ship. Oh. Not really

running it but he was kind of instigating a Borg

battle with a ship and you kind of decided what

to do and He was seen video from that. Yeah,

I watched the whole put -together video on YouTube.

That's how I know about it Yeah, I think I've

seen the same thing you saw and it was it kept

having these little clips of John Delancey saying

you died Yeah, yeah There was and again there

was a lot of Simon Schuster up until 2001, it

looks like. Interplay did a lot of games up until

2001. And then, of course, in the early 2000s,

you start seeing Activision jumping in there.

And you would think their games would be better,

being that they're more known for gaming. Yeah,

I can't say that I can't say that Activision

makes bad games They don't but I think it has

a lot to do with the other studios. They're partnered

with Oh Is there always partner with another

video? Yeah, and they're always some random weird

name that you've never heard of before or after

And then eventually Activision lost a few and

then interplay got it back and then Activision

got it again and then they had Bethesda and then

for one game. What did Bethesda do? They did

Star Trek Legacy and a couple of PlayStation

2 games. Oh, that's it. Yeah, because Bethesda

usually puts out a good game. It was mostly,

you know, you fly the ship around type thing.

Ah, OK. Which was all right. And then Paramount

did a few and then Cryptic Studios did one and

then. Game Forge was supposed to have one but

it got cancelled then digital extremes did the

new Star Trek 2013 That just came out. I mean

it's Again, there's not really any good Star

Trek games I wonder how difficult it would be

to get the license to Star Trek right now and

not necessarily to the the Abrams verse Star

Trek, but just the overall Yeah, I mean, let's

say you wanted to do something, I don't know,

based on the books. There's a series of books

now that have nothing to do with Kirk. I want

to say it's like next generation era, but it's

a different crew on a different ship and it's

called... Oh crap, what are the books called?

I don't remember the name of the book. So anyway,

but when it comes down to is There's completely

different Series in the the expanded universe

fiction, let's say and let's say you wanted to

make a a Video game based on one of those how

hard would it be? I wanted to get the rights

to that I mean you think they'd be throwing it

at you at this point. Like nobody wants to make

a game on that. Why not? Go ahead. That would

be cool actually to see the studio get a hold

of it that actually wants it and kind of get

to play around a little bit. Yeah, I mean that

would be interesting. I think it'd be cool to

see High Moon try and do it, but I really doubt

they want to. Yeah, I don't think they want to

either, but if High Moon did do it I would want...

Star Trek Generations game where you have everybody

From the past including the Abrams like I would

want to see everybody together like all the character

designs and granted a lot of the voice act, you

know something like obviously you can't get the

original Scotty and stuff like that, but As many

of the originals that are still around For voices.

I would love to see I haven't do something like

that and have those two universes collide I don't

know if High Moon is the end -all be -all in,

you know, video games. I mean, Activision puts

out some really nice games. Gearbox Software,

with the exception of that horrible Aliens versus...

No, it was Aliens Colonial Marines that they

put out that was a subpar. They usually, you

know, put out some pretty strong showings. And

like I said, Bethesda's really good. Black Rock

Studios. puts us in really good games and we're

not talking like You know like MMOs or that type

of thing No, yeah, yeah That's why I mentioned

high moon is because I would want them to do

some things with Star Trek similar to what they

did with the transformers games that they made

like that kind of game where you have The story

direction and you can play as you know, you can

choose from three characters. So let's say for

example, you choose from Kirk prime Spock prime

or you know bones prime or what whatever you

know, I mean like You know what I mean? Damn

it. Yeah, I know what you're talking about. Yeah

Yeah, so that that's why I keep mentioning high

moon is because if we got a Star Trek game like

what they did with Transformers That would be

awesome. Yeah. Oh I'm trying to think who who

did the the last Once I like never winter nights

cuz I when I when I think of when I think of

Star Trek games I have I'm thinking more of like

RPGs, you know where you have you have you have

an away team You know that you designate and

they can gain rank or whatever and Different

items things like that. I just foresee like an

RPG game out of that and Maybe maybe the action

-based games just aren't where Star Trek needs

to be it doesn't lend itself to that You know

case in point the you know, Chris pine versus

the Gorn You know, it's it's Star Trek meets

Mass Effect. Maybe that's not the direction we

need to go in Maybe we'd be happier with a Baldur's

Gate meets Star Trek I'd be happy with that.

I like RPGs Yeah, I mean I I would like to see

just somebody take it and Actually do something

good with it. I think a lot of it has to do with

writing and a lot of it has to do with the gameplay

mechanism So anybody has become a lot more important

with video games in the last few years. Oh Yeah

So moving right along yes moving right right

along into the comics and we'll include toys

in that as well comics and toys Which I know

nothing about, uh... For me, the comic's the

only Star Trek comic I've ever read and quite

frankly I didn't particularly like it because

apparently Vulcans go through puberty every seven

years of their adult life. Oh, they just did

a really good booty call. So, spoilers for anyone

who hasn't read Star Trek 21. from IDW, Star

Trek After Darkness, basically picks up where

the film left off and the basic storyline is

Spock is going through the Vulcan version of

puberty. Sigh. Yeah. And the funny thing is this

issue is written by Mike Johnson, who is one

of the TF Prime writers. He's also the co -writer

on TF Prime Beast Hunters comic. It's good. It's

interesting. Like, I like the story. I like the

dialogue. I love the way the Enterprise looks

in different shots, but the art style and the

characters, it looks like 2D versions of wax

figures to me. I don't like... Like, it looks

like the cast. I'm not saying it doesn't look

like the cast, but it just doesn't... It's very

flat. It's not at all... I'd rather watch Wrath

of Khan You know, I would rather watch new Wrath

of Khan again than watch then then read more

of the Star Trek series and and I love IDW's

books I do I just don't think that this issue

Really does the the JJ Abrams cast justice at

all? That's a shame As far as the toys I've seen

them I like them I've never had any of them I'm

not a Star Trek toy collector. So yeah What about

you Michael my aunt Loves Star Trek a huge fan

of the original series and She collects Star

Trek toys. So, you know every once in a while

I would get her something Like a ways back guys

had have been I might have been it had have been

15 years ago or so I found the three -dimensional

chess set That they that they would play in the

original series. Oh, wow. Yeah, they had those

I Forget even where I got it, but I bought that

for her and she's got that on display in her

house She's got plastic over it. So it doesn't

get dusty And at one point I got her a Spock

teddy bear. He's got on the blue shirt with the

insignia and the ears. His teddy bear ears are

pointed. It's wow. It's adorable. Yeah. But she's

got a lot of the figures. And I don't know if

she like pick these up on clearance or what.

But back in the day, the Voyager Voyager, I'm

sorry, the Next Generation series had a lot of

action figures. And then every time a movie would

come out there'd be more action figures and she

she's got a lot of them. I think she's got like

a sea captain wharf or the one episode where

where Picard was on a holodeck and they were

all dressed up as as uh, British naval officers

that was in generations Okay. Yeah, there she's

got she's got I know for a fact she's got wharf

as a british naval officer, which is hilarious

And I want to say she really wanted the figures

from from the Abrams movie And those didn't turn

out too poorly and I think I want to say my cousin

got her a bunch of those but because I had like

a little actually each figure came with a part

of the bridge and And when you got all the figures

you could actually make I don't want to say you

want to make the bridge, but you'd have like

The captain's chair and all the consoles and

then there was a bridge playset Which only had

two consoles but had room for all the other ones

on it so you could plug them in and I want to

say all those were on clearance for like dirt

cheap About a year after the movie came out and

nobody wanted to buy him I guess but but they

were how they were big lots. They showed up at

big lots and I want to say my cousin got over

a bunch of those but she's got You know not like

an exhaustive collection, but but she's got quite

a few figures and collectibles Just around the

house I want to say she's she's got a original

series phaser on display in her house. That's

nuts It's yeah, it's it's really cool. I mean,

you know, but like I said, she's she's a huge

original series fan And she's got she's got some

pretty old stuff on display like records Star

Trek records Yeah Yeah, but yeah, but personally

no, I never got into it I remember Way back when

they had Galoo I want to say had the micro machines

Star Trek vehicles and Those were out at about

the same time that I was picking up some of the

micro machine Star Wars vehicles So, you know,

you could have a little Millennium Falcon fighting

a little enterprise And they're all by the same

company. They're all the same size. It was interesting.

I dug that type of thing, but I didn't buy any

of them. Well, I'm only allowed one collection.

What's that? His wife only allows him one collection,

and that collection transforms itself. Exactly.

I'm only allowed one collection. I can't buy

anything else. It transforms into what? Into

a truck. Or a monkey. Or a monkey. I've got some

that transform into monkeys, too. Yes. What about

you, Steve? For me, I had a lot of the toys.

I had every Next Generation toy before Generations

came out. I had the shuttlecraft, I had the enterprise

bridge, same thing with the original series toys.

I had all of the live action kind of role playing

toys where you had like the phaser, the communicators,

the com badge, the tricorders, but I had them

for just the original series and the next generation.

I had the DS9 run about I had a couple of the

big enterprise ships the electronic ones So and

the transporter and a couple other big ships,

but Nice eventually all of that went away, but

But yeah, I mean I had a lot of the toys for

a while and then the comics I had pretty much

all of the original series I believe DC Comics

did the comics for them I had the I'm pretty

sure the entire run of the original series of

the next generation for a little bit there and

then it went to like paramount image comics or

something like that and then bounced around before

IDW got it. So it wasn't in it too long but the

stories were good in a lot of the comics and

they had a lot of alternate universe stuff and

a lot of continuations from the original series

or the next generation picking up storylines

that had like one or two episodes and you never

saw again. So it was quite nice collecting those

kind of things because you could see things that

they never quite fully realized. Well, plus,

you have to go back a little bit earlier in the

story and remember that your parents were huge

original series fans. So, I mean, like right

now, I'm a huge Transformer fan and I buy a lot

of Transformers for my kids, which are kind of

secretly for me too. But so it's like I can imagine

your parents being like, hey, check out the new

Star Trek stuff on the shelf. I think I need

to get a couple of those for Steve. Or is that

not the case is it mostly like no, I totally

wanted that screw my parents, you know No, they

they didn't collect any of this stuff actually

Really? No, okay They were real big into collecting

stuff they would rather watch the shows or whatever

So, I mean it even in that I think the reason

why I got the comics was it was something to

read And they were trying to promote that. And

I had a lot of the Star Trek books. Well, not

a lot. I had mostly depending on I had all the

film books and then I had select episode ones

like relics and ship of the line and some of

those other ones kind of telling backstories

of other characters or more in depth episode

things. And then I have all I still have the

relics and then I still have all of the recent

film. books, and then I have all of the William

Shatner books, whether you love them or hate

them, they continue in directions that Star Trek

didn't do because Nemesis and everything else,

so. Yeah. It was interesting. Shatner was still

carrying the torch there for the original series.

Oh, he was carrying the torch to the extent that

he wrote a book that took place between Star

Trek 6 and 7. One that took between seven and

eight one between eight nine nine and ten and

then all of the rest of them were after ten Did

they all have Shatner in them? Oh, yes They brought

Kirk back he revived Kirk in the first book after

generations I I want to say didn't Spock go dig

up Kirk on the planet that he died in and then

They use like Borg technology to revive him or

something. It wasn't Spock. It was the Romulans

and the Borg. To use it as a weapon against the

Federation. But then Spock rescued him. He went

to the Borg and tried to be assimilated in his

place. And they said, we can't assimilate you.

You've already been assimilated. Pointing back

to Veger. Oh, wow. That's Shatner. He writes

a good book. So. Then it was with the Judith

and Garth field read Stevens Group that wrote

with him. So they wrote all those books with

him. So Yeah, they intertwined into just about

every aspect of Trek and they touched every series

Nice except for Enterprise because it doesn't

matter. Yeah Enterprise is not in continuity.

I liked Enterprise I think it's good as a standalone

if you're not like being hardcore against the

Stuff that came later as far as continuity wise

but Well, you know, I mean I they have that temporal

Cold War in there just just As a foil to any

retconning they did it's like well, you know,

they're actually in the future too and I mean

they even went so far as to having the Borg Really

Yeah, there was an episode with the Borg. The

loophole there is First Contact, where the Borg

transport to Earth after they're booted off the

Enterprise, basically. And then there's a sleeper

ship, and there's three Borg on it. And they

appear to be offline. And some archaeologists

are on the Arctic Circle and reawaken the One

of the borgs and it Infects him. Oh, and I oh,

oh Okay, and it was one of the ones from first

contact because this is like a hundred years

after Yeah, and co went after after Cochrane.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah See, you know, you know I remember

that for some reason it resonates in my head

like it was a book that I read Because I have

read some of the Star Trek books Couple of not

as many Star Wars books as I've read but I have

read a couple of the Star Trek books Primarily

like the Voyager stuff You know see what happened

with the characters after they got home See and

I think that's where the expanded stuff really

is nice to have yeah Because I like to know what

happens to them after the fact But you know Blanchard's

like, here's my rat's ass. He's like, don't give

it. No, it's not that I don't care about it,

it's just like... You can't have my rat's ass!

Because I don't give a rat's ass. And the old

jokes come out, and they still work! They still

work! I still got it, baby! So, anything else

on comics, toys? Really surprised you don't have

more insight on the toys because it's like I

I know you've got childhood memories that just

you know still bring a smile to your face concerning

these things I Wish I still had a lot of them

Well, do you wish you still had it in the same

way that I still wish that I had my you know

Darth Vader with the with you know with the plastic

cape and the And the thing that slides it, because

that's more for eBay purposes to be honest. Funny

thing is I still have the original series communicator.

Yeah. That my parents had to preorder from Toys

R Us when it was coming out. Nice. I still have

it. It still works to this day. Your parents

are awesome. Yeah, they were they were. I got

all kinds of Batman stuff. I had all the Ninja

Turtles toys. I had all the Star Trek stuff.

Oh, nice. Yeah, I had huge collections for a

long time. I don't know how I ended up with all

of everything, but eventually it all either got

passed to my brothers or I sold it. Oh, well,

that explains it. I was about to say, where did

it all go? Yeah, unfortunately, I had to sell

it all back in the early 2000s because I was

poor. Oh, that's tough. And now I'm older and

trying to reclaim my childhood, which is terrible,

because you have to spend two to three times

more to get what you had. Yeah, eBay is a tough

mistress, I tell you. But I do have a Star Trek

costume of Captain Kirk. Sweet. I don't have

a phaser. You know, I'm sure they have like a

Detroit Comic Con or something. You're going

to have to show up for that. Yeah, there is a

Detroit Comic Con. Nah. He would sooner put on

a Megatron costume than a Kirk costume. I wouldn't

go that far. All I have to do is throw on a shirt

and a pair of pants and cheap boots. You lazy

cosplayer. Yes. You know, when I was little,

my big collections were Star Wars from when I

was like four, five, six, seven. And then in

the early 80s, there was He -man and I had an

assload of he -man and then after that was transformers,

but I I I don't know what happened to my original

Star Star Wars stuff, but I distinctly remember

my mother Telling me she was going to sell my

he -man because I was playing with transformers

now and she and she didn't think I needed it

anymore And I think she sold like all my stuff

for like 40 bucks Know and you know, it was a

granted it was, you know 1986 or so when she

sold off all my he -man But I had a whole lot

of he -man and I really wish I still had it today

And not for eBay purposes kind of like Darth

Vader, but but yeah, I really wouldn't mind still

having my toys around Yeah That's a sore subject.

I've told that story many times over the last

five years that I've podcasted. 1986. Go down

to my dad's place in Rhode Island expecting my

Snake Mountain place set and all my villains

and everything else, because I kept all the heroes

in Castle Grayskull at my mom's house. So I would

bring select He -Man masters with me to go along

with the villains and have fights at Snake Mountain.

Go in the little room. Gone. Dan sold them all.

His reasoning? You're too old for toys at six

fucking years old. Yeah. Dude. As far as Star

Trek toys and stuff, like, as far as the comic

series, I'm sure if I go back and I get the current

IDW trades of the current series and not just

read one issue because of the latest film, I'm

sure I might get used to the art style, but...

The writing is, I will say that Mike Johnson's

writing in Star Trek 21 was damn good. It was

an interesting thing. Yeah, the plot's a little

spot going through puberty every seven years,

but... That's in the actual original series,

though. Yeah, that happened. No, I know. I mean,

yeah, it just... You can't get away from Ponfarr.

I mean, if they introduce a Vulcan character,

eventually she will go into heat. And he will

need to pound it. Yeah. Um, yeah, I get that

and I get that you can't get away from it. I

just I was I Don't know. I was expecting more

from because the whole point is with Star Trek

number 21 for IDW is its events after the latest

film and I was just expecting more than what

it was Well considering the last one was just

a rehash of old, you know original series stuff

that happened I'm not surprised that the comic

book isn't just a rehash of old original series

stuff that happened That's what a lot of it is

actually I almost said g1. I was kind of funny

That's why I didn't bother to pick up or read

any of the new stuff That's why I would rather

just read the old stuff because the IDW versus

just retreading Classic stories and giving them

a new twist, but it's pretty much the same outcome

well what episode was it when the I want to say

it was a DS 9 crew that actually went back in

time and and trouble with trouble and tribulations.

Yeah, when they hit the troubles. So that I love

that. That was so cool. That was probably one

of my favorite DS nine episodes. And I don't

I wouldn't mind it if they did something like

that. But if they're going to go back and redo

the entire just just, you know, here's the script

to the original. And then we erase the main character

names and put down the new names. I mean, that's

that's just lazy writing. Yeah, I will agree.

Yes. So with that, we'll take another break,

come back and cover the music, films, and future

of Trek, and close it out. Wow, this is long.

How about another challenge? You want to play

a round of golf at the club and get some lunch?

Whoever gets to the club last buys lunch. Stand

by to have your wallet emptied by a tractor bin.

Anything's possible, but probably not that. In

the middle of the earth in the land of Shire,

there's a brave little hobbit we all admire.

Long wooden pipe, fuzzy wooden toes. Lives in

a hobbit hole and everybody knows him, Bilbo.

Bilbo Baggins, the bravest little hobbit of them

all. Yeah. Go Bilbo! Paul Leonard. Go. Hey, where

are you? Use your sensors. No need. I'm already

here. You're there already? I feel like I'm stuck

in a black hole. No worries. I can practice my

swing if you need to pull over and take a nap.

Smartass. I have been and always shall be your

friend. Really? I had... Nice try. No, no, no,

I definitely had... Not for a second. Obviously,

you're buying lunch. Technically, we're not inside

yet. I'll see you inside. Fascinating. I know

you're still in there No use his patterns degraded

53 % He's gone I'm sorry so am I He was a good

lad I'm commander William Riker Starship Enterprise

Lieutenant Commander George LaForge. The Enterprise?

I should have known. I bet Jim Kirk himself hauled

the old gal out of mothballs to come looking

for me. Captain Montgomery Scott, tell me, how

long have I been missing? I have this analysis

done in an hour. How long would it really take?

An hour? Oh, you didn't tell him how long it

would really take, did you? Well, of course I

did. Already you've got a lot to learn of you

want people to think of you as a miracle worker

now listen Captain Scott I've tried to be patient.

I've tried to be polite, but I've got a job to

do here and quite frankly you're in the way I

Was driving Starships while your great -grandfather

was still in diapers I think you'd be a little

grateful for some help I'll leave you to work,

Mr. LaForge. Please enter program. The android

Enter when ready. So for film soundtracks from

the Motion Picture, for the original cast Motion

Picture through Undiscovered Country, there were

several composers that did the scores for those

films. Only one composer did the score for two

out of the six films. Jerry Goldsmith was the

original composer on Star Trek The Motion Picture.

You had James Horner doing Wrath of Khan and

Search for Spock. You had Leonard Roseman doing

the Voyage Home, Jerry Goldsmith again for Final

Frontier, and Cliff Eldleman for Undiscovered

Country. Jerry Goldsmith is one of those composers

that when he was alive, he could do no wrong.

He could manipulate music to whatever you wanted

it to be. And it was just so awesome. I mean,

everything that he has touched has just been

amazing. It's one of those, Jerry Goldsmith is

one of those composers that is like a John Williams,

like a John Dabney, like, you know, Hans Zimmer.

He's just one of those. And his, the stuff that

he's done music for is just amazing from all

the way to the 50s to... The the late 2000s the

last thing he did was Actually the last score

he actually ever did was Looney Tunes back in

action but Oh, wow, that's interesting, too Okay,

so that's the original series. Do we do you guys

have any thoughts on the original film series

of music? Michael my only thought is the Original

series fight music Anytime he had to fight somebody

all right anytime Kirk was fighting somebody

would break into the fight music and like the

cable guy Yeah, but that I don't know who wrote

that but he was a genius yes Steve, thoughts

for the original six films for the music? The

motion picture definitely brought in what would

be used later off and on between The Next Generation

and a lot of the franchise. A lot of the films

are just they're scored great. I mean, that's

one thing that you're going to remember the music

while you're watching. All the films. Oh, yeah

What is that? the original series theme song

Was performed with a with a particular instrument.

I want to say it was like a theremin But it's

like that weird says your reskin flute special

instruments a reskin flute was used within the

shows That wasn't so much the show. It was the

theme song was performed with this thing. It's

it's like it. It was like one of the first pieces

of music created for a TV show that used a synthesizer.

Ah, yeah. Yeah, I know what you're talking about.

I can't remember the name, but it's that that

sound that's like, wow, wow, wow, wow. You know

that by vibration. Exactly, that's not a traditional

instrument. It's like this funky thing and I

wish I could remember that again woefully unprepared,

but I heard a presentation on on that particular

Piece of music, you know where they were talking

about how it came to be or why they made it with

that and at first they wanted it to they wanted

it to be like a traditional song and then they

said well, no, maybe we shouldn't go that route

because you know we like we heard we heard this

particular instrument somewhere else and we were

like this is kind of an interesting thing why

don't we go with that i can't can't remember

the exact the exact name of it now and again

someone's out there going i know what that is

and yes totally like the comments about that

but yeah and i'm terribly unprepared and i really

should have known out of all 12 films Out of

all 12 films, Jerry Goldsmith is the one composer

that has done the most composing on it with four

films under his belt. After the original films

going into the Generation stuff, Dennis McCarthy

did the score for Generations, Jerry Goldsmith

along with his son, Joel Goldsmith, did First

Contact, and he also did Insurrection or Nemesis.

I love, again, Jerry Goldsmith, one of the best

composers of all time, at least in my mind. I

love the music in first contact. It was just

so awesome. It was so dark and ominous. I know

it, yeah. It was just so great and then Michael

guacchino or Jaquino or however the hell you

say his name Who is the film composer that JJ

Abrams always speed dials did both? Star Trek

oh nine and and into darkness my I liked good

Not to cut you off, but my pet peeve with that

guy's composing. Yeah, the the film sounded great

What little bit they did use during the films?

but The second film sounded to me like they didn't

actually have any new music whatsoever It sounded

like it was rehashed from the 2009 reboot, which

again all they did was take the original series

theme and Then they added a couple of bars to

the end of it so they don't go bomb bomb bomb

and then it would go right back to So, I mean

it was just It didn't I don't know didn't do

much for me. I like it, but it didn't do much

Well, I do know reading from interviews and also

Wikipedia that guacchino in both instances used

For Star Trek 1 and Star Trek 2 for Abrams films

He intentionally used the Alexander courage original

theme for the end of the film for the end credits

that way his newer themes for the various young

members of the enterprise you know could evolve

and all that but I don't know I have to see into

darkness again I just like I wasn't paying attention

to the music when I watched it Star Trek 2009

he did an amazing job with it I thought for what

it was considering it's an it's basically an

origin story Setting up these new characters

Michael thoughts on the Abrams verse music the

Abrams verse has music Yes It's like I said it

was it was mostly rehashed From the original

series it didn't strike me so much as something

that I would remember it I think it might have

been original series enough to make me go. Yeah,

that sounds a lot of the original series Because

I have a PhD in Google I was able to to quickly

solve my issue that I had earlier in that the

original Star Trek original series theme song

was I want to say the original original Well

here as a wiki it says it was a wordless rendition

of a melody line sung by soprano julie lee julie

lulie Who names her kid this lulie gene norman

with a flute and organ over an orchestral arrangement

And that was played with the original uh pilot

which was the cage Um, and and what happened

is after that they didn't use that anymore Because

Sheen Roddenberry decided to go with the the

electronic violin Which is where we get that

wow It makes me wonder what the original song

sounded like with like singing And a flute such

I don't know Anyway, moving along. That would

be too strange. Yeah, I mean honestly you gotta

ask myself how much do I really care? I don't

give a rat's ass. Just be too strange. For the

television series soundtracks Alexander Courage

did the original series. That he did. Ray Ellis

and Norm Prescott did the animated series. Wow,

there was actually a score for the animated series,

holy crap. Would it not be the same thing? They

just rehash it? And for the other remaining series,

Jerry Goldsmith and Dennis McCarthy switched

off. Jerry Goldsmith did Next Generation, McCarthy

did Deep Space Nine, Goldsmith did Voyager, and

then McCarthy did Enterprise. So Jerry Goldsmith

is pretty much the long -standing composer in

the entire Star Trek music franchise. Yeah? Cool.

No, the music is really good again like I've

said earlier in this in this episode that I'm

gonna have to go back and watch next -gen and

Just you know kind of relive it and whatever

else But I like the music overall so Yeah, so

getting into The future films What are you guys

Thoughts and favorites of those there were a

lot of them That's about it, that's all I got

good night everybody Well, you know I I will

say one thing I was really surprised that there

was no feature film And I want to say like after

after Insurrection let's say there was no feature

film that that brought back the DS 9 crew Or

the Voyager crew. I mean they could they could

have easily had a ds9 movie Or what what then

let's talk about, you know the reconstruction

after the dominion war What happened to those

characters? Uh, you know, you could tie in the

voyager characters What happened to those or

it could be a ds9 episode where the voyager characters

show up? On their way back from the delta quadrant.

It could have been anything and you know at that

point Maybe because Instruction did so poorly

in the in the box office They just said, you

know, we can't we can't afford to make any more

movies like this because you're just gonna tank

but if they had You know gone back to the well

and said alright, you know what? We can't afford

Patrick Stewart anymore. Let's get Every Brooks

out here and and have him do a movie You know,

I'm sure there's there's a fanfiction out there

that You know could be repurposed into a screenplay

For just oh, yeah, I'm sure and and I kind of

agree with you. I'm kind of disappointed that

they didn't at least try Yeah with the other

crews. I know they promoted Janeway to Admiral

Well, she showed up somewhere as Admiral Janeway

First contact or no nemesis. That was okay. Yeah.

Yep. No, that was nice That was a nice tip of

the hat to Voyager, but not what I was expecting

I mean there was a that was a cop -out. There

was a book series There was two books actually

About what happened when Voyager got home and

they immediately got mixed up in Oh hell, what

was it called? What's what's the the? The spy

agency called is it like section 31 section 31

So they immediately immediately gets mixed up

in section 31 and I want to say at the time Well,

the way the books were written section 31 was

very popular in the fiction So they tied that

in with voyager and they tied that in with like

seven of nine and and you know section 31 was

very interested in her Uh, but you know, why

couldn't there be? Uh Why couldn't there be a

section 31 centric movie where you introduce

these characters who are you know black ops spies

and they're investigating what happened After

voyager or or maybe the voyager shows up at the

uh DS9 and you got you know these these Literally

a Star Trek 007 who shows up and has to investigate

How all this ties together and and how something

went wrong? I don't know somebody killed wharf.

I'm not sure Well, seriously they kill off wharf

that'd be a huge movie just watching wharf die

Perhaps it is a good day to die There you go

Would it make you cry like when Dino Bot cried?

I don't know. Or when, you know, Dino Bot...

Dino Bot cried. Dino Bot bit the dust. We all

cried. No one bites dust. They did, honestly,

but anyway. Would I still cry when a wharf bites

it? Maybe? I don't know. Sometimes you gotta

kill off a Klingon to make a good movie, but

I would pay to watch that. If someone told me,

hey, I heard wharf died in this one, I'd be like,

fuck yeah, I'm gonna watch that movie. Anyway

As I've said before I have Seen bits and pieces

of the original six movies. I want to see generations

I just haven't yet and first contact was the

only movie that I had really seen in the theaters.

That was my first experience I have no interest

in insurrection or nemesis. I've heard that they're

very nemesis is all right Bad really it's yeah

It's got bane in it Tom Hardy He's doing a really

He's just doing this really really crappy accent

that doesn't you know, it's not his accent, but

it's not Patrick Stewart's accent either It's

like I thought you're supposed to wait a minute.

This doesn't make any sense You know, I just

feel that one was poorly written and poorly directed

Yeah, and I think for me with the Abrams verse

because I was never Exposed to the wrath of Khan

I didn't mind into darkness. I get it. I understand

why the Dire trekkies most of them optimus solo

not included do not like it because it's a rehash

of Khan No, it's not because it was rehash of

kind of weeks as fans We expected kind to show

up and what do they tell us cons out in this?

Who's in it? I don't know Harrison Williams.

What the hell John Harrison, what'd they call

him? They call him something They specifically

didn't call him con and they said no john harrison's

in this besides Does benedict cummerdink look

like? What's his name cummerd to cummerbatch?

Does he look like con? Hell? No, he doesn't look

anything like con. He's not con, you know, and

everybody goes All right, and they kind of squinted

jbj abrams ago Okay, if you say so and then what

happens they insult they insult our intelligence

They betray our trust. And they had a shitty

use of Khan. And it wasn't even a good Khan.

It might have been a really cool John Harrison.

I might have bought that. A really cool John

Harrison. We should have just done original.

You know what if they had if they called him

John Harrison and he would have been as badass

as he wasn't that He could have told us he was

a genetically modified super soldier in the vein

of Khan He was somebody who knew Khan and he

was frozen and then they unthought him. They

don't even have to say Oh, he's kind of like

Hans crew could have been anything like that

and I would have bought it and loved it But no,

they told us this isn't Khan and then at the

end I'm Khan Screw you Abrams just in your ear

buddy because well isn't that just kind of like

the argument of No, it's not Megatron. It's NBE

one. No good. Give them to Star Wars No, you

can do that in other in other fandoms Get away

with it, you know, you can you can do always

that Megatron's and be one and we'll be like,

oh, we know it's Megatron Ha ha, you know, but

if you do that to the Star Trek fandom These

are again. These are not science fantasy people

These are hardcore or hard sciences fans who

love the stuff because it's it's rooted in reality

And if you lie to them there goes their reality

You can't you can't lie to that particular fandom

outright bold -faced lie for months You know,

because this would be gone on forever. That's

just how I felt about it. I was hurt and betrayed

and the fact that the whole end of the movie,

no spoilers involved, is lazily written because

it was already written once. It hurt. I didn't

spoil it. What? I didn't say what happened. I

just said it. You know? It's been out for a couple

of months, who cares? Nearly similar to something

that had been written before! That's all! That

did it better the first time! You know what would've

made it better? You know, okay, looking at it

as a... As a die -hard one, as you guys would,

you know what would've made this act, made Into

Darkness better? John McClane? Okay, there's

that, but... If you had, I don't know, is the

original Con still alive? No. If he was still

alive when this movie was being filmed the story

could have been he was con Harrison was his son.

Oh Seriously that way you wouldn't have The whole

oh my god, it's not con. Yes. It's come, you

know, you wouldn't have that argument You know

my boys just just recently like within the last

year or so had gotten into the Spy Kids movies.

Oh god. And Robert Rodriguez, no, for kids they're

awesome, but Robert Rodriguez had Ricardo Montalban

play the grandfather. Oh yeah. Yeah, and that

movie couldn't have been that old. No, like within

the last five years or so, but I remember going

fuck Yeah, Ricardo Montalban, you know, cuz I

mean even old and it had been a wheelchair even

old and in a wheelchair he kicked ass Yeah, he

did. Yeah, it was it was he's like Don't touch

the chair. It is real Corinthian leather and

I was like This little fanboy squee, you know,

it would have been better if he says I would

From hell's dark heart I strike you thee. Like,

oh my god. I think I just wet myself a little.

Oh wow, I forgot he was in that. Wow. I can't

believe I've actually seen Ricardo Montalban

and other stuff because I completely forgot.

Okay, running down really quickly. After Wrath

of Khan. No, I'm sorry. We brought it up. I have

to go through this. Alright. After Wrath of Khan,

he did Cannonball Run 2. No. He was Vincent Ludwig

in the naked gun from the Files of Police squad.

Nice. And then in 2002 and 2003, he was the grandfather

in Spy Kids 2 and Spy Kids 3. Yeah, see, that

rocked. He died in 2009. Oh, man. How did I not

hear this? That's terrible. You are too busy

dealing with Transformers news. Well, I mean,

seriously, you know, when when Khan dies, everybody

should. You know shut a little tear cuz seriously

sweet Exactly Yes Then on TV going Exactly or

Yeah, that that that hurts, you know just the

other day I saw some newly released photos from

this Star Trek 2 set and Yeah, you got Ricardo

Montalban and who dressed up as Khan on the floor

they've got It's like it's it's like a remote

control car With a blow -up robot on top of it

that you could drive around you remember those

Okay Those were you know in early 80s, right?

Anyway, so you got it's like it's like a little

robot that you would drive around with a remote

control But it wasn't like a robot robot. It

was just a little remote control car with a blow

-up robot on top of it Anyway, but this particular

blow -up robot had a little look like he was

wearing a little white suit and They and they

they pasted a little picture of tattoos face

on top of it. Oh Wow It is funny cuz you got

con with his great big grin and he's kind of

pointing at it It's like this little tattoo robot.

It was really I thought it was hilarious because

you know Fantasy Alan he was a freakazoid Really?

He did a lot of voice work. Yeah, it was Those

guys that you can know not Jorge but Ricardo

Montalban he he's had that voice that you do

It's like oh my god, that's Ricardo Montalban

Or is somebody doing a damn good Ricardo Montalban

because there's a lot of voice actors that do

him very well. Oh Yeah, I mean that's kind of

like um Cory Burton is a dead ringer for Gary

Owens Cory Burton has has a radio and Marie Maurice

LaMarche. Yes. Yes, that's true But yeah, I mean

I like the current film series I know they are

gonna make one more I know for a fact that at

least pine and Quinto are gonna make one more

They're talking about starting filming next year.

Yeah, they're gonna do that No, they're saying

they're yeah, I do too They're saying now they're

gonna start filming next year and they're gonna

do it with Abrams and I'm like, there's no way

in hell Abrams is gonna be firmly entrenched

in Star Wars for the next Star Wars Yeah, foreseeable

future. I don't see how he's gonna be able to

do a third movie But I'm saying that there is

a third movie coming out and regardless of who

the director is we've already gotten to One really

good movie and one for most of you diehards it's

meh okay but for me I enjoyed both of them I

like both the direction I I do get sick of the

lens flare a little bit specifically in the original

2009 movie that's style buddy that's I know it's

I know it's style I get that but okay I understand

having lens flare in a battle but why do you

have why does he use lens flare when Spock is

arguing with Kirk when in the scene where kirk

is uh... trash make him show is uh... that that

is the compromise there's so much as they're

on the bridge that's why just i don't know i

don't hate the lens where thing i'd i'd you know

i know there's a lot of people out there that

hate it and that bitch about all the time i've

never really bitched about it but just thinking

about it now and i had seen the the film, I don't

know, a couple days before we recorded this.

And I'm thinking about it. I'm like, yeah, I

don't know. But I like the current film series.

I'm interested to see where they go from here.

I'm hoping that whenever the third film comes

that they'll do some new story and not just rehash

and make it The Search for Kirk. Well, they didn't

have to do that. I know. For obvious reasons.

Yes. I was totally expecting the third movie

to be The Search for Kirk. I know either either

they have a third movie for search for Kirk or

they they invent some magical unicorn blood that'll

bring it back this to life, you know, and That's

what they did. Yeah, exactly. It's like well

they congratulations you know, but destroyed

Vulcan and found the cure for death good job

And then what did they do they put him under?

You know, honestly in a real -world situation

he wouldn't be under he would be chained to a

bed Pump full of Coumadin and just making blood

24 -7 We're gonna we're gonna drain him of four

pints of blood and then we're gonna wait from

the heel About an hour later drain him of another

four pints of blood, you know Just keep going

Because there's you know to quote Tito if this

is torture chain me to the wall That's exactly

what they do to it It's like all right, you know

They'll they'll they'll sit there and tie They'll

tie him to the wall and make him watch animated

series reruns Over and over and over again till

he goes insane and just keep draining the blood

out of his arm Wow now that they can watch narwhals

Where do you see the future going? I'm glad that

Abrams is not on the next film why Just because

well, actually I can't say Abrams. He's made

a couple good movies. He's made other good stuff.

I don't see I more so mean, let me rephrase that.

The writers need to be replaced. Oh, Ortsy and

Kurtzman. Yes. They tend to get stale like they're

fine on TV shows and animated series. They're

fine. I have no beef with them there. OK. My

problem is when they get on a feature film series,

they're fine for the first film. Like they do

good because they they. Have to recreate something

from nothing Okay to reintroduce it Once they

get past that introduction film. It's all downhill

because then they're just pulling out of their

ass things to to use Before and and they didn't

write the second Transformers movie no, but they

did have a hand and part of that and Weren't

they in the third? You know, I think more of

the third but the third I enjoyed I did good

was a rehash of Of at least five different g1

episodes. Yeah, which you know, hey, I like that

They were they were good episodes and it was

I mean compared to Compared to the second movie,

you know, that was citizen Kane Yeah, there was

no there were there were no dog humping in the

third movie It was an improvement, but not by

much in my opinion. Just because of the fact

that they were still too many concepts taken

from something else instead of something new.

That's more so where I get a little irritated

with that duo. It's not that they're bad writers

because they do really well with what they have.

It's just my pet peeve is where there's nothing

new. Yeah. they recycle too much old stuff. I

mean, yeah, they mix a lot of it together to

make it kind of cohesive, but it's still not

as good as it could be if they just came up with

a new original idea, which granted, Hollywood

doesn't have very much of anymore. Very little

patience for new stuff. They're stalwart. You

know, we are not giving new money to new ideas

because the old ideas work so well. True. It's

true. I mean, it's really that's why you see

a lot of these indie developers Independent developers

that come out with just really interesting stuff

That may never get turned into a feature film

or a real video game or anything because they're

just you know, they're they're It's stuff that's

never been done before and big studios are not

willing to put money into something that isn't

a proven formula It's like enterprise, you know,

no, we're not gonna put money in enterprise because

You know it did dip below a certain a certain

line of ratings that we expect it to stay above

and there it goes Yep Exactly. Yep. So I I see

you know if they don't Change their ways. I see

them retreading and then getting stale all over

again I hope not Hopefully they'll just bring

in new writers That's kind of the direction I

would like to see them going Yeah, but then again

even in Hollywood Even with the writers you see

that they're not willing to change if you have

a couple of writers who've made a lot of money

Like, you know Ortsy and Kurtzman have their

names all over Transformers and Transformers

has made something along the lines of three billion

dollars You know, it's gonna be hard to get rid

of them even if you don't like them True Yeah,

you can't argue the numbers Three billion dollars

were the were the transformers movies that doesn't

hurt even if even if the writing itself was crap

It's crap. It's crap. I tell ya It's a crap Shoot

for the wallet, that's terrible I made that image

That was funny. Yeah, I saw that floating around.

I'm like that looks like Steve's work. Yeah I

did I did totally saw that I'm like, I think

Steve did that That's nice Yeah in the future

the future of the series the future of the franchise,

you know I I don't think they're gonna go with

another TV series There's nothing more they can

do. I mean people are saying oh they should do

Star Trek A Star Trek Academy, right and they

kind of hit it hit that in the movie and that

was interesting But I don't think you can base

a series on that People are saying oh ten seasons

of Smallville this There you go exactly Toward

the end of Oh, what was it the end of enterprise

where they had like the the the enterprise F

or something and it was the temporal warship

The temporal ship enterprise something like that

and they were saying oh, why don't you do a series

on that? So you're jumping another, you know

100 200 years in the future and you You can't

really have a series like that because the the

technology You know the technology a hundred

years ago a hundred years 200 years in the future

is so far advanced now that that you know, we

can't we can barely imagine like the holodeck

was the strange fantastical thing like wow i

can't even imagine that being real what where

would that come from well nowadays we're talking

about how do how do we create holodeck technology

in the next 10 years you know in the next 20

years how do we create this technology that would

help how do we help us go to mars you know if

we go to mars we may not need a holodeck but

we're definitely gonna need a food replicator

how do we build that That is in the planning

stages now. If we're talking another 100 years

on top of that, that technology, we can't even

envision. We have no idea what that's going to

look like. I mean, honestly, 100 years past next

generation, we're literally looking at WALL -E.

where everyone's sitting in chairs watching personal

video while they scoot around a ship and they're

like hippo -like orcas because nobody walks anywhere

anymore. But I don't see how we could do a series

like that based that far in the future because

the technology is like, well, if you have a temporal

ship that goes through time, well, how? Why don't

we just make Star Trek with Doctor Who? No, no

No, come on. You got a big ass turn around. It

looks like an enterprise Crap needs to stay over

in Britain where it belongs. I love dr. Who Yeah,

yeah, you could have Christopher Christopher

Eccleston as the as the next captain Captain

of the or have him as the next villain. I Don't

know a villain. He does he does he does a good

bill. He does a good hero, too, though Man him

as the next villain. Yeah, I'm having his Destro

so Commando Such a cheap shot I almost forgot

about that So this face to metal Anyway, it was

we get late. I'm getting a little punchy here

Yes, you are but the was I gonna say Yeah, so

so where do we foresee this? I could I would

like to see As a series of web episodes, honestly,

you know some some 15 -minute shorts where where

you just meet a new crew or You know, let's you

could even you don't even have to do a recurring

cast You could let's jump around Starfleet. You

know, let's let's meet the second shift you know,

on a particular ship, or let's see what a particular

planet looks like, or what's life like on a star

base. You know, that type of thing. Not like

DS9, but like, you know, a medical star base

or something. You know, I mean, there's all sorts

of different stories you could pull out of this

mythos. Right, and they don't necessarily have

to be even related And if you're making a web

series 15 minutes apiece all you need is a Decent

CGI and a decent writing and you can keep going

for her There are some web series that do anywhere

from five to seven minutes With damn decent writing

and it was a damn good series. The specific one

I can think of is actually start our buddy Jason

Marsden, he did Space Guys in Space for Epic

Level TV and those were five to nine minute YouTube

videos and it was just awesome. Yeah, you know,

it sucks because I had intended to check those

up and I didn't. Well, you can. I'll send you

the link after. Yeah, link me up. So where do

we go from here, Steve? Here we go to a commercial

break and come back with our... Final thoughts

on the whole thing and close it up. I've got

to sit in this chair. No, no, no. I don't think

that's a good idea. Instant. Hell the enemy.

Otherwise, based on past experience, we'd be

done by now. Okay, I'm a little confused here.

Oh my, can I help? Not that kind of confused.

What's George Takei doing here? Oh my! How many

times do I have to go through this? We can go

to our family ski lodge on Pluto! We don't have

a ski lodge on a dog! I know, kinda goofy, huh?

As peculiar and annoying as you can be, you're

still my little buddy. I'm not going to let that

end here tonight. Now put down that drink, let's

meet Brent Spiner and go home. Hey, Sheldon!

I'm so glad you made it. I found something I

think you might like. What I'd like is for him

to have a more depressing home. This is quite

lovely. This is for you. An original Minton package

Wesley Crusher action figure. I remembered your

story about the time you went to a convention

when you were a kid to get one signed and I didn't

show up. Look at what I wrote. To Sheldon. Sorry

this took so long. Your friend Will Wheaton.

It's my last one. I want you to have it. Look

everyone, Wil Wheaton is my friend! Oh wow, I

haven't seen one of these in years. Remember

how we used to make these things look like they

were masturbating? Fred Spiner, what have you

done? That was an original Minton package Wesley

Crusher action figure signed by my close personal

friend Wil Wheaton. Sorry, Slim. I've got some

Mr. Data dolls in the trunk of my car. You want

me to sign one for you? You've already signed

something, Brent Spiner. Your name on my list.

From this moment on, you are my mortal enemy.

Don't worry. It doesn't take up a whole lot of

your time. Come on, buddy. Let's not waste another

second on this loser. We'll love your house.

Can we get autographed dolls? Sure. Twenty bucks.

Ten. Eighteen. Twelve. Sixteen. Two for thirty.

And you come to my birthday party. Is someone

there? Down here, on your desk. Spock? I need

to speak with you. Fascinating. The only logical

explanation is that this is a dream. It is not

the only logical explanation. For example, you

could be hallucinating after being hit on the

head by, say, a coconut. Was I hit on the head

by a coconut? I'm not going to dignify that with

a response. Now, to the matter at hand, you need

to play with a transporter toy. But it's mint

in box. Yes, and to open it would destroy its

value. But remember, like me, you also have a

human half. Well, I'm not going to dignify that

with a response. Consider this. What is the purpose

of a toy? To be played with. Therefore, to not

play with it would be... Illogical. Damn it,

Spock, you're right. I'll do it. Sheldon, wait.

You have to wake up first. Of course. Set phasers

to dumb, right? Oh dear. Two suns and no sunscreen.

Hello again, Sheldon. What is it now, Tiny Spock?

I am very disappointed in you. You broke your

toy and switched it with Leonard's. You should

be ashamed of yourself. You're the one who told

me to play with it. If I told you to jump off

the bridge of the Enterprise, would you do it?

If I got on the bridge of the Enterprise, I would

never ever leave. Trust me, it gets old after

a while. You must right your wrong, Sheldon.

Why? I got away with it. Leonard has his toy,

and he's never going to open it, so he won't

know it's broken. And I have a toy that isn't

broken. Everybody's happy. Well, I am unhappy.

I thought where you come from, they don't have

emotions. I come from a factory in Taiwan. Now

do the right thing. You know what you are? You're

a green -blooded buzzkill. Perhaps this time

you beam on out of here. Fine. I will just use

the transporter. Oh, right. You broke it. Very

well. Cooper to Enterprise, one to beam up. Energize!

And we're back for the last bit of the M -Wire

episode 100 special on Star Trek. So, guys, what

are your final thoughts on the entire thing overall

of everything we've covered so far? For me, it's

the films. Like, whatever happens next, I'm really

interested in. I know you guys as die -hards

minus Optimus Sol, because Optimus Sol really

liked Wrath of... con remake but for me it's

the current film series i love that cast i think

that cast is great reimagining the characters

and having it in an alternate timeline or an

alternate universe or whatever the hell because

i remember listening to the i think it was was

a future i don't know i think it was future imperfect

when leo that sci -fi guy was like um yeah it's

not an alternate timeline. It's an alternate

dimension or it's something or other. I don't

remember what he said. He said something along

the lines of... Yeah, he said it's an alternate

dimension for the reboot because... Right. And

he got into all the specifics of it and it made

sense. Right, yeah. I mean, either way, no, it

made sense and that's fine. Either way, I'm still

really stoked to see how they developed these

characters and to see... the contrast between

what the friendship between Shat and Nimoy characters

were and what pine and Quinto Versions do So,

yeah What about you Michael final thoughts well

first I wanted to bring up something I mentioned

earlier and that was the The movie that's to

The one that had old Sulu and new Sulu there's

old Sulu and young Sulu. Sorry. Yeah, Star Trek

phase two. That's a fan series You can google

it. I sent you a link but it's got a yeah the

episode I was talking about was world enough

and time and That was it's under this Star Trek

new voyages label Really interesting stuff. I

actually sat through the whole thing and enjoyed

it Oh, what were we talking about? Final thoughts?

You know, I know that there are people out there

who are bigger fans of Star Trek than I am. You

know, people who can quote from the novels or

people who dress up in the costumes or people

who can speak Klingon because people speak Klingon.

People have Klingon weddings. Just oh my god.

Why am I flashing to the big bang theory Sheldon?

I told you not in Klingon exactly Exactly. It's

like first thing we're gonna do it in Klingon

and then we're gonna do it in Yiddish But Sheldon

shows up at a bar mitzvah and and and speaks

in Klingon and yeah, it sounds enough like Yiddish

but Yeah, but he also tried to do it at Howard's

wedding. Is that what it was? Okay. Yeah, I'm

Mistaking Howard's wedding for a bar mitzvah,

which honestly isn't that far The power is Jewish

so he's Jewish and four feet tall so, you know

wedding Jewish wedding Jewish bar mitzvah But

yeah, I mean there there are other people that

that take it to a level that, you know, I couldn't

see. But I do consider myself a big fan. I enjoy

the work. I like where Abrams is going. You know,

despite my misgivings about the second film,

I have a lot of fond memories about the original

series. And. You know, it's it's it's it's with

me, it's in my heart. That about covers it Steve

Overall I love the film series. I love the shows

To me those are the main two a lot of the other

stuff I could It doesn't really matter to me

at this point I'm looking forward to all the

watching a lot of the fan produced series because

funny thing about it is all the other cast other

than the two that are no longer with us and the

two famous ones out of the group, meaning Leonard

Nimoy and William Shatner, who neither one of

them would ever be seen on any of these, just

saying because, you know, Uhura, Sulu and Chekhov

are the only three that I've ever seen on any

of these fan -produced series from The original

cast didn't Shatner just put the Admiral uniform

back on for I want to say it was the The Oscar

Awards Yes, but that's the Oscars though, I mean

that's basically satirize that's basically satire.

Oh, yeah, it's making fun of himself There's

a difference between an original You know web

series that fan series and the friggin Oscars.

Yeah, I'll buy that sure I was hilarious. I didn't

watch the Oscars, but I had to go out and find

that clip So I you know, so I could see it cuz

I thought was hilarious. Yeah Yeah, I I found

that after the fact so I thought it's quite funny

Yeah, it's hilarious. Anytime Shatner puts back

on the uniform. I think it's hilarious It doesn't

happen very often No, I think now it is well

I don't want to say in his his twilight years,

but but yeah now that he's he's what 70 something

Something like that. Yeah, you know if he does

it. It's it's it's an event. It's It's like yeah,

if I see him dress up at this in a Star Trek

uniform I I gotta follow up and just waiting

for the day that there's a Star Trek Priceline

commercial I'll settle for the Yeah, I'm more

in favor of that passing of the torch. Yeah.

Thank you Big Bang Theory for introducing us

to Kaylee Kowaka. Actually, most of us knew her

from Eight Simple Rules beforehand. Nobody really

paid attention to her all that much. Yeah, I

never watched that. Oh, Eight Simple Rules. Yeah,

I did watch that. Yeah. Where she's a dissy blonde

that actually gets geek Yeah, no, that was a

good series. I do remember that now. That's what

I say with John or Ritter Yeah, no, it wasn't

it wasn't uh Was it John Ritter? Yep. Yeah, it

was John Ritter He's been dead a long time. Wow.

Yeah That was a long time ago. He was one of

those guys that didn't seem to age No, yeah,

it's kind of like Nicolas Cage. He's still Jack

Tripper, you know, yeah He'll always be Jack

Tripper. His clothes changed, but the face stayed

the same. Yeah, pretty much. But no, I mean,

Star Trek, you know, depending on how they approach

certain things, has a bright future in film and,

you know, if a TV series comes down the line,

sure. But we can always go back and watch the

old stuff. Yep. We'll always have Paris. Tom

Paris that is Sorry, okay the holiday Yeah, that's

that's a better reference What is the what's

the holodeck called on the what was the porn

deck on DS 9 called? I really call it the holodeck.

They called it up. Don't remember They call it

They call it so the the Ferengi called it something

I forget what they call it But that was a that

was like his big thing was who's got the the

most recent? programs for the porn deck. Yeah,

I don't know what it was called in DS 9. I can't

remember. It was it was some kind of a different

name, though. Yeah, like the Gucci bar. I don't

remember. So, you know, and again, there's a

harder core fan, a different caliber of fan out

there than I am. Who's out there with his arm

raise going, I know what that is. I and the sad

thing is the hollow suite, the whole maybe. Maybe

and the sad thing is the whole time you're mentioning

this as a bar the only thing I can think of is

hey when swerve gonna show up Blaster Direct

it Sunk oh You haven't seen that have you oh,

I'll explain it to him off. Oh my god. That's

hilarious. Yeah. Yeah Yeah, you know it's it's

sad too because I'm I'm still I'm still just

such a huge part of the Transformers fandom and

it always comes back to TF for me Yeah, and that

my first blaster. Oh my god. Is that funny? And

especially when taking in context of the series

is just oh Yeah, such such a well -written series.

I love that stuff Alright back on topic. Sorry

So yeah, I think that Pretty much covers our

expansive coverage of Star Trek in episode 100.

Anybody else have any final thoughts? Well, one

of the reasons why we did this giant topic for

episode 100 is that over the, I believe it's

the next 12 weeks, Steve and various other hosts,

Steve is headlining it, it's his baby, we're

doing the Star Trek film reviews. For motion

picture all the way up to into darkness. So Steve

is going to review them from VHS because he has

this whole whole set No, I don't have that anymore.

I actually have the DVD collection. Oh I've got

the first two movies on DVD. I was really proud

of that and Because I I just love rathacon so

much I had to watch it over and over and over

again. I I have the the the first six With the

the captain's thing all in one side Nice nice.

It's not blu -ray. It's DVD, but it's Regrettable

have they come out with a blu -ray version. Oh,

yeah, they've had that. Oh, yeah It can't be

any better than a DVD version because those weren't

originally filmed in like a high -res format

no But they they've got it. I mean it includes

more features and that kind of stuff. So oh There's

a lot of stuff they leave out Feature wise it's

just mostly the films on this but if you get

the blu -ray I think it has more Okay, and then

they have the same set for the the four TNG films

as well Interesting they're in slim packs in

a you know thing so like slim disc Cup right?

Yeah, so but yeah, it's nice Hey, I'm sorry like

what right at the end. I just now remembering

this but We haven't covered this if you guys

did did you guys go to the The Star Trek experience

in Vegas No, Steve may have no they they had

a thing actually Detroit couple years like it

was a year or two ago Unfortunately something

else was up during that time, but I wanted to

go so bad I went I went my roommate at the time

Carl Gomburg We flew out to his parents house

in California and then made a road trip over

to Vegas and then we did it then and Then when

I got married my wife and I went and we went

to The restaurant there which is kind of set

up like quarks I think it's called quarks and

they have people who are in costume that would

that would Serve you right and I think we have

like a Klingon waiter or something and he was

in character It was awesome and I had the I remember

like it was yesterday. I had the targ ribs Targ

ribs, dude, I know and we had the beer sampler

and they had Romulan ale Was actually blue and

they had Klingon blood wine Which was which was

dyed red and they had a couple different ones,

but I remember those two specifically I oh It

was it was a it was a good time and that was

and that's before you even get into the ride

Yeah, they they they closed that down a while

ago. You can't actually get into there anymore,

but you know, I I really enjoyed it. I thought

it was really cool. It was a cool ride. It was

literally like a theme park ride. You would get

in there and the whole thing would move around.

Yeah, I wish I would have been able to go. It

was really cool. Yeah, it was really neat. I

don't really want to wrap things up here, but

I feel like I should talk about this because

it was so damn cool. You go in there and there's

They say okay everyone, you know how when you

go to a Motion ride and they have everyone get

in a room and line up and They say okay Well

when the doors open then then there'll be the

the ride will be in front of you You go through

the doors and you sit in the seats Well in this

one they line everybody up in this room and they're

like, okay when the door is next to you open

Then everybody go in and sit down in the ride

then the lights turn off in this room and you

know and then the there's a flashing light and

you hear the teleporter sound and somehow you

know Hollywood magic when the lights come back

on you were on a transporter deck and Yeah It's

cool. They pulled the walls out or something

and you're on a transporter deck and there and

there's and that there's a Transporter officer

and he says, you know, I'm glad we were able

to pull you out The Klingons are trying to destroy

this your group because they believe that one

of you is important so And we have Commander

Riker on com, and he's going to explain to you

what it is, what the deal is. And they have a

security detail show up in the room, in the transporter

room. And they say, please come with us. And

you walk, the whole group walks, they follow

the security detail, down a hall that is straight

out of Next Generation. And you walk down the

hall, and then you empty out into the bridge.

And it's dead on bridge. And there are people

manning the consoles. And they're looking at

you like, what are they doing here? You know,

who are these people? What's going on? And then

on the screen is Ryker. And he says, he says,

you know, I'm glad you're here. I can't be with

you now because we're engaged elsewhere. We're

trying to defeat the Klingons and the Klingons

are here because they believe one of you and

we don't know which one, but we believe one of

you is an ancestor of John Luke Picard. And if

they believe if they destroy you or this group,

then they will destroy Picard the future. We

can't have that. We have to evacuate this whole

group. And then they say, okay, security detail,

take them down to the shuttle bay. The security

detail rounds up the group again, walks you down

another hallway and you're in a shuttle bay.

And this looks like a real shuttle bay and there's

a shuttle there. And the shuttle is actually

the ride, right? But the doors to the shuttle

bay open, you all climb in, it's like a dozen

people, climb in, get in there, the doors close,

and then the walls of the shuttle bay... So does

it take you to Vulcan and then Vulcan gets destroyed?

Is that basically the purpose? No, no. You know

what happens is you fly around Vegas. That's

just lame, I'm sorry, that's lame. No, what's

funny though is you're in the shuttle. You fly

out of the Enterprise and then you do a circle

around so you can see it, but then the Klingons

show up. The Klingons show up on screen in the

front and they're like, give us the Picard ancestor.

They're like, screw you man, fly away, we'll

provide cover. So you're flying. Literally through

through around these two ships that are that

are having, you know a battle they're they're

firing at each other and I forget exactly what

happens but the Klingons are defeated and And

then they say okay, you know, we're gonna have

to you know, drop you guys off at at whatever

Or take you take them back to the to the to their

theme park ride, you know crisis averted John

Luke is okay and And thank you for all your help

then The ship flies back to the MGM grand and

then descends down and you can see where the

lights are, you know, it says like basement level

and And when the door is open there's this guy

out there pushing a broom and he's like What

are you people doing here? You're in the basement.

You're not supposed to be in here He's a janitor,

you know, and then he shows you how to get Back

up and then you go through a staircase that takes

you back up into the restaurant into the gift

shop I guess you just had to be there for the

experience because that was one long boring run

-on sentence. I'm sorry free to edit that out

later that can be an outtake or something I just

wanted to relate that to you because that's cool.

The gift shop was awesome. The restaurant was

awesome We at Christy and I had a great time

It was just just a lot of fun. It's just sorry.

It's not still open Yeah, not a lot of those

classic rides and attractions in Vegas and Universal

like back to the future ride got shut down in

favor of something else I'm sure in a couple

of years the Transformers ride at Disney World

will get shut down or what? You know what? I

mean Universal Studios or whatever so they stopped

making a billion dollars a movie I can see that

happening, but the rides don't ever let like

you never see a theme ride like that last more

than a year or so which oh, yeah, yeah you do

I like the Universal had What the King Kong ride

for like 10 years? Before they shed the the jaws

right nowadays. You wouldn't see that though.

Oh, I don't I mean honestly It may it costs a

lot of money to build something like that and

they're not they're not gonna recoup that money

in a year No, they're gonna they're gonna let

us sit out there for 10 years And then you know

when they monitor that the traffic going through

there is less and less and less over time Then

they'll say well, you know what? Let's get something

new in there But yeah, I I'm really interested

in going on that ride at Universal In Florida

and then we and then we found out that most of

the rides at Universal have a height limit requirement

That my boys don't quite meet So we said okay

out of the you know, a dozen or so rides there

Universal they can go on three or four So we

just we decided we weren't gonna go there We're

gonna stick to Disney this year and then maybe

in a couple years when they're taller We'll do

we'll do universal. But yeah, I totally want

to see the Transformers, right? I totally want

to see the Harry Potter stuff Sorry, is there

a Star Trek right anywhere? No, they closed it

because they're bastards So just a reminder in

this long -ass closing of the show 20 minutes

or so Over the next 12 weeks. Mr. Will be doing

the Star Trek spotlight with Steve helming the

show. So there you go Feel free to edit that

whole rants out. I'm sorry. Nope. It's dated.

All right You should put a little disclaimer

in the beginning Michael Wilson is going to rant

for the next 20 minutes. Feel free to fast -forward

It's fine, it's fine, that's fine, you know,

there are people that might be interested in

this theme park ride that has been shut down

for a decade. Who knows? I actually read somewhere

there were plans to create a life -size enterprise,

enterprise A, in Vegas. And it would have been

the size of two football fields. And they were

going to put a ride, for one thing, in it, but

they were going to put a hotel in there. So you

would go up into the saucer section. and be able

to look outside. I don't think it never actually

got anywhere. I've seen pictures of what it would

have looked like. Or artist renditions. Interesting.

I would have went. I would have paid money. I

would have too. Yeah. But yes. Yeah. So in closing.

Yes. Thank you for listening to this retrospective

on all things Star Trek We hope you'll stay tuned

for the next 12 episodes as Mike stated as we

cover more in depth each feature film So until

next time we have been Dave Jones Mike, Peacock

or Michael and I've been Steve Megatron Phillips

saying live long and prosper and we'll catch

you in the theater somewhere out there Yeah,

so you with this you don't have to know every

aspect of all of them. It's just so that we can

touch on base on all of them, even if it's lightly.

Ah. Alright, because at this point I'm thinking,

God, how much do I know? It doesn't seem like

that much. Now, see, I always thought you were

a bigger Star Trek fan. I mean, I know you're

a huge Star Wars fan, but I also thought you

loved Star Trek as well. Yeah, I do. Yeah. No,

I really get on the Star Trek, but like I said,

I've never, like, played the games. I mean, because,

you know, everyone who's in the gaming and Star

Trek knows that the Star Trek games suck. Yeah.

So, I mean, I've never gotten into them. Yeah,

I'll agree to that. I've played so many of them.

It's bad. Apparently, there was a Voyager game

based on the Unreal Engine years ago, and that

was supposed to have been good. But I think that

was in the arcade. When I was little at the arcades,

there was a game that was It was almost, it was

Star Trek, but it was like vector based and there

was like a little enterprise consisting of a

circle and three lines. Yeah, and you use a spinner

to point it in one direction and then you had

a spinner and you had a thrust button and a fire

button. And it was almost like asteroids, except

instead of asteroids you had to come up across

Klingon warships and blow them up. And then warp

to the next sector and it just got Progressively

harder, but I mean the graphics at the time.

I mean it like I said, it was like asteroids

graphics And I played the hell out of that with

quarters when I was 12, but I don't Remember

I don't I haven't played any other games You

know, you know surprised you haven't played the

as the MMO come out yet Star Trek MMO, yeah it

did. Which one? Star Trek Online? Yeah. It's

terrible. It's terrible? Okay. I played it. I

mean it's free to play and free to download and

everything. I played it and I barely made it

past the beginning part. Did you play DC Universe

Online? No. Okay, that's a vastly superior game.

Okay. Just saying. I haven't played that either.

It's also free to play I know I don't know if

it's been released yet, but there was one there's

a new game and it's supposed to be like the crispine

Kirk and Dodd said that game's terrible really

and he said the proportions of everything they

said you have like It's it's bad. I guess. Okay,

so you like play that sci -fi guy That sucks,

you know, I heard good things about it too. It

looked like it was no there was a commercial

And it had... Oh, Christ, who was... I want to

say, it was definitely Shatner. Shatner and somebody

else were playing the game together. It wasn't

Chris Pine, though. I tweeted it a while ago,

and I, you know, it was like a preview for this

game. And the whole thing is that they were reintroducing

the Gorn. That, it was Shatner and the Gorn!

Shatner and the Gorn were sitting in his house

on the couch and they were playing the game and

the Gorn is like It's like don't you know, don't

complain to me cuz you suck at this game It's

funny I suppose yeah, it's like direct TV commercials

with Shatner and Star Trek 6 Yeah, I broke the

fourth wall and start talking to you. Oh, I don't

remember those it's hilarious if you look it

up on YouTube yeah because it fits like right

into Star Trek 6 right after they they shot the

Klingon ship and he's sitting in the chair and

then he just starts talking gets up and monologuing

to the direct TV thing and then Spock says something

and then he does his typical quote or whatever

and then goes in the turbo shaft and smiles and

it and it was just it was retarded but it was

funny You know you take what you can get from

shat I guess Yeah, that's before shat got fat

oh Shats been fed for years one meant to where

he couldn't fit in his starfleet uniform for

years I want to say it was like him as far back

as wrath of Khan. You know he could barely fit

in the Admiral suit It's like, holy crap, are

you tubby Shatner? What happened to you? It was

tailored that way. I eat really well for a starship

captain. Let yourself go. Do we have somewhere

in here to talk about the documentaries, Steve?

We can kind of throw that in there with... The

general discussion? Yeah, I mean that's... The

only one I've watched is the captains, so...

I've watched that and not recently, but I watched

it. I watched one of the ones that Shatner had

on I think it was no I was on Netflix. I think

at one point Yeah, better looks now. Yeah, and

I watched Trekkies and some of the other ones

on there and It's poking fun at the fans to some

extent so I haven't seen that one either Like

there's one There's one that was supposed to

be, like, a bunch of guys going to visit Shatner

somewhere. That's the Captain's. It's his film.

It's what he did was he basically goes to, like,

he goes to Picard. He goes to What's or Nuts.

He goes to the DS9 Captain. He goes to Kate Mulgur.

Ambrie Brooks is nuts in real life. Yeah, he

is. Really? He's out there. Yeah. He goes to

Quantum Leap Dudes. place oh really yeah yeah

he's like doing a rob paulson he's just pretty

much yeah but it's like most of the locations

in it like when he was with cape mulgrew it was

like in a theater he was with uh abrid brooks

it was it was at um his house and yeah shanner's

just kind of looking at him there's not much

dialogue there and then um What's so stupid with

that documentary, and it kind of pisses me off,

is there's not enough Kirk on Kirk. There's not

enough of... They had him arm -wrestling. ...Shot

and Stab. I would rather hear them do more...

He did more discussion with Avery Book, Brooks,

and Kate Mulgrew than he did with... with Pine.

Oh. You know. Eh, Pine's new to the role. Doesn't

matter. It's still Kirk versus Kirk. Are you

recording this? Yes, of course I'm okay good

because we'll just we'll just roll that into

the episode then Hey, it's an all it's an all

comprehensive look there we go. So I guess before

we get Since we're already started Anything any

further in there? I guess we should sing, you

know mention the show that this is so welcome

to movie we can review As we celebrate the monumental

episode 100 here on our four -year anniversary

show, which is actually like a week or two late

Today we'll be covering of course all things

Star Trek. I am always your host Well, not always

Hey, how's it going? It's it's it's going holy

crap the call got dropped what the hell Wow,

this is this is probably the best reason to start

over come on You just don't get it, do you, Jean

-Luc? The trial never ends. We wanted to see

if you had the ability to expand your mind and

your horizons. And for one brief moment, you

did. When I realized the paradox. Exactly. For

that one fraction of a second, you were open

to options you had never considered. That is

the exploration that awaits you. Not mapping

stars and studying nebulae. but charting the

unknown possibilities of existence. Q, what is

it that you're trying to tell me? You'll find

out. In any case, I'll be watching. And if you're

very lucky, I'll drop by to say hello from time

to time. See you. Space. The final frontier.

These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.

Its continuing mission. To explore strange new

worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations.

To boldly go where no man has gone before. You've
