About this Episode

TFG1Mike welcomes Doug Abel from Talkin' Bout My Generation to discuss the 1999 heist thriller starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. They compare it to the 1968 Steve McQueen original, break down the clever art heist plot and the chemistry between the leads, and explore why the film's pacing, soundtrack, and supporting cast make it a rewatchable classic. Both hosts give it a perfect 5-star rating.

bucks. They shut off the air to drive out the

tourists. Then they close the gates to keep everybody

out. Diversion make a lot of noise over there.

So over here in this room, you can take 100 million

to MWIRE Movie Weekend Review brought to you

by the GeekCast Radio Network. I am one of your

hosts TFJ and Mike and joining me for the first

time here on Movie Weekend Review, we welcome

Doug Abel from Talking About My Generation. Woohoo!

Yes. So we are here. This is episode 110 of MWIRE.

We are celebrating MWIRE's fifth anniversary

because it launched I think... A month after

the GCRN launched? Yeah, it launched. This is

so silly, I tell this story all the time, but

since you don't think I've told you this. No.

The very first episode of MWIRE back in 2009,

it was the Back to the Future episode, or no,

it was episode, I don't know. Anyway, the very

first release was July 11th, 2009. You know why

it was Saturday, July 11th, 2009? Because that

was the day the new iPhone was coming out. Jesus.

But we are here. 110 and a few extra episodes

later To talk about a film that I did It's funny

because sometimes you see something you you know

You see something like what we're gonna be talking

about here today, and then you realize oh Wait,

this is a remit what the and then you go back

and look at the original film so today The main

focus of episode 110 here in M. Wire is going

to be the Thomas Crown Affair from 1999 starring

Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. We are going to

talk a little bit about the 1968 Steve McQueen

Faye Dunaway version. I will say that I did see

that version recently I think on one of the movie

channels I get on my cable whatever the hell

it is. Even though the original film is based

in Boston and it's a bank heist The 99 version

has more flair more and I'm not I'm not gonna

sit here and say anything bad about Steve McQueen

because I know people will come down on me like

like white on rice, you know, but it's just one

of those things where I Guess maybe it's not

my film. It's not my generation of film, you

know, it's one of those things where it was made

in 68 and it's always nice to go back and look

at some of these old films but honestly I prefer

them going after a painting and you know had

the hunt that way versus I mean anybody can rob

a bank for 2 .6 million dollars yeah I mean it

just I think the 99 version has like I said a

lot more flair a lot more ambiance so Okay, the

1968 version of This Is Us stars Steve McQueen.

It is basically a bank heist. It's basically

set up the exact same way. That's what I love

about some remakes that they basically follow

the original formula, even though they changed

the location in the 99 film and they changed

what he was stealing in the 99 film. At least

the formula is the same because, you know, Thomas

Crown... Approach it, you know, he gets these

five guys together to do all this stuff and he's

off somewhere else and and it's a very very interesting

format for a I Don't want to call it a heist

film, but I guess it is Yeah It's kind of like

a action suspenseful thriller kind of thing It

was at least yeah, it was kind of just a bunch

of different things I mean really like you said

it was the action thing. It was the alluring

sex You know sex pot scenes Mm -hmm, and then

you had the heist which you know it was It to

some extent it still reminded me of like the

Italian job. You know both the old and the new

one Mm -hmm, but still yeah, I mean you're right.

You know you've got all those aspects, and it

really wasn't just a heist film Yeah, well at

its core the the the majority of it the basic

criminal plot is they're going to steal something,

so that means it's a heist film. You know, just

the general core, but yeah, you're right. I mean,

it is one of those things where, you know, it

does have a lot of charisma in it, it does have

a lot of character to it. Like I said, the 99

one is my favorite, mainly because... i believe

was this before or after let me see here released

was this was released um three months before

the world is not enough in 1999. So you have,

now think about this, okay, the 1999 version,

you have Pierce Brosnan, okay? Pierce Brosnan

by 99 had already done two Bond films. He'd done

GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies. And we were

just waiting and waiting and waiting for the

next Bond film to come around and we found out

that it's gonna be The World Is Not Enough in

November, I think it was November 19th, 1999,

I believe that's when it was. And this comes

out in August of 99 and it's like hey, what's

Bond doing in another movie? What's going on

here? Because that was at the time of his hype

of being Bond and I didn't think that, you know,

I know a lot of people who have played Bond have

gone on to do other things, but I didn't know

a lot of people or some people would do things

while they're still that character. Would do

other movies separate from that which is interesting

Like I said the 1968 film is a is a gem of a

classic film. It's It's got a really nice flair

to it But we are here to talk about the 99 version

because honestly ladies and gentlemen like I

said a moment ago The 68 film just didn't really

do it for me. I No disrespect to the movie or

anything like that, but it just didn't do it

for me. So Had seen this I think when it hit

media release probably somewhere around She came

out in August. It probably hit DVD Christmas

or New Year's late. It was late 99 2000 when

I saw this I know I didn't see this in theaters.

I would have loved to have seen this in theaters

Oh, yeah, so would I that would have been amazing?

So I have seen it and watched it over and over

and over again for the last You know, 15, 16

years since it came out. You never even saw it

before until now. Yes, yes. Well, and let me

explain what happened with that, because originally

when I had first heard about this, my father

was my father is a huge Bond fanatic. And so

he he tries to drag me to all the Bond films.

And then we found out that world and the world

is not enough was going to be the next Bond film.

And we thought at first like he thought at first

that. Thomas Crown Affair was a Bond film because,

you know, again, Pierce Brosnan. Right. And then

he heard about it and he's like, oh, no, this

has nothing to do with it. And so he was really

kind of pissed off about it. So we never actually

went to see it. So I was like, oh, well, it's

not a Bond film. And, you know, you know, it

just wasn't something I wanted to see. Well,

you know, I came home today and I started watching

it and my wife comes home and she's watching

it and she goes, oh, this is really good. Well,

what's going on with with You know, James Bond,

I'm like, that's not James Bond. Same thing,

you know. Well, I have to explain that to her.

She's like, oh, OK, OK. So so she's in love with

her. What what's going on? Like, she sit down

and watch it. So yeah, you know, it's one. This

is a movie that I. Latched on to and I have watched

over the years. I cannot tell you how many times

I This is one of those movies that once I immediately

liked it and I liked what they did every part

every single piece of it I Had to go out and

get the soundtrack by Bill Conti and I have the

soundtrack on iTunes by Bill Conti I believe

I'm trying to think if it was used Know the song

that's on here that plays Center man, I know

it's on here. I know it's been used somewhere

else. I've heard it somewhere else I Don't remember

where though But I know I've heard it in another

movie so to set the stage really quickly basically

You've got the 1968 film but you know, for modern

times. And instead of being in Boston, which

is fine, I'd rather have, you know, a New York

museum stolen a piece of art from than a Boston

museum. But anyway, damn Yankees. So basically

what the basic plot here is when the painting

of St. George O'Meor's At Dusk by Monet is spirited

from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the insurer

The insurers of the 100 million dollar artworks

and investigator Katherine Banning, played by

Rene Russo, to assist NYPD detective Michael

McCann, played by Dennis Leary, in solving the

crime. Banning quickly carries, uh, comes to

suspect the wealthy financer Thomas Crown, played

by Chris Brosses, behind the theft, and a game

of cat and mouse ensues and leaves them in love.

Oh lord. Thomas Crown... is a guy who has everything

he could possibly want. He constantly says throughout

the entire film, it's not about the money. It

was never about the money. It was about the thrill

of the hunt or the thrill of the catch. Yeah.

And I love that. I think that's great. It was

a lot like he was just a board. You know like

he was a board a board billionaire. Yeah, exactly

You know he didn't choose to go the Tony Stark

route or the Bruce Wayne route. He chose to steal

paintings Pierce Brosnan is the next Batman might

be better than bat fleck, but anyway Yeah, so

I love Again this is one of those movies that

the music sets the stage The music, even though

some people don't notice it as much as I do,

but the music really sets the stage from the

opening numbers to the fact that these criminals

are hiding in essentially what is a Trojan horse.

For the most part. To them doing all this interesting

stuff, to them setting up the crime of stealing

the painting, and Thomas Crown would be a great

Bond villain. He really would! Well, yes he would.

He would make a great Bond villain and Because

he is so brash about it and he's so basically

This is what I'm going to do and I'm not going

to do anything else to distract you from this

is what I'm going to do But I'm gonna create

a whole lot of noise over here so that over here

I can just go ahead and get away with whatever

the hell I want to do Oh, yeah, definite misdirection.

He was a magician at this. Yes Amazing and I

love how they figure it out Because a few days

later after the robbery Michael Dennis Leary's

character You know Russo's character bannings

points out to him. She's like Michael. Come here.

Look at this Here's the image from before the

robbery. Here's the image after the robbery.

What do you notice? three legs Yes, the bench

And so they go in, they look, and it's one of

those... I don't want to say constructed cold.

It's one of those carbonite... I don't want to

say Samsonite. It's basically a briefcase that

can withstand a lot of pressure, pretty much,

because he had put that briefcase under the...

He put it under the gate, didn't he? Yeah. He

put it under the gate. Then he switched him out

and put the painting in and just walked right

out You know so we get to the point where it's

the love story That's a I like it. I like their

chemistry together. I honestly wish they had

more together That would be amazing to see the

two of them act more together I was really surprised

at how how well Renee Russo pulled this off.

I mean you know she was She was still the sex

pot I mean and granted this is you know 15 years

ago But she was still that sex pot even then

it was kind of like you could see her being an

older woman But damn she looked good Yes, she

did So they have this this confusing frustrating

relationship it frustrates her more than him

at first oh, yeah Cuz cuz he's just you know

He's like a cat who is just scratching at the

ball of yarn. I mean he's just, you know, dangling

her around on a string. And it's really interesting

that, you know, the whole time he knew the original

forger and now he supports the forger's daughter.

Everything else and but she jumps the wrong conclusion.

She thinks oh well He must be having you know

he must be seeing this younger woman or blah

blah blah So there's there's all that She her

character bannings care Russo's character banning.

She's uh She's a very strict by the book kind

of woman throughout most of the movie well there

I would kind of go a little off on that I would

disagree for a little bit only because she breaks

into his house To steal the painting what she

thinks is the painting anyway, and right that

I mean Dennis Leary is even there He's going

what do do the laws of the United States of America

mean nothing to you? And she's just like yeah,

well you know I just did it anyway, so what I

got the painting back Okay, so maybe by the book

isn't the exact term. I was looking for she is

more so Worried about what you know because he

tells her later in the film You know, I can leave

here tomorrow. Why don't you come with me? And

yeah, she can't she has an obligation the insurance

company She has all these things and but she

even calls her financial advisor and asks her

and then asks the person You know, what what

kind of loss would I be taking if I took everything

now? It's a wonderfully crafted film. Oh, yeah,

the funny thing is is that it's The reason why

the 1999 version is more my favorite than the

68 version is because It really has a little

bit of a die -hard element to it Yeah, because

McTiernan directed it yeah, yeah I mean Just

amazing it really really is what as you were

watching this what were some of your thoughts

on the plot as it as it unfolded You know, I

kept waiting for certain things to drop I honestly

when I first saw it at the very beginning when

you see the guys coming in I first kind of thought

okay, maybe it's him who's gonna be hiding in

this Trojan horse somehow and then I see him

going into going into the museum and I'm like

Well, how the hell does he get in there? You

know, how's it? How's he gonna steal this and

then I see the guys coming out and I'm like,

oh Well, maybe he's hired them to steal it and

then the more I'm starting to watch it and I'm

going no No, and then he sneaks in I'm like oh

shit. He's doing this. It's all it's all giant

ruse That's all it is and I really enjoyed the

fact that it kind of kept you guessing as to

what was going on I mean even some of the little

things like when you see Renee Russo, they're

they're down on the beach They're that they're

at his beach house, and she grabs the box and

says you know here I'm just gonna you know she

throws it in the fire and lets it burn and She's

like tell me that wasn't it What was it? That

was Runaway Was it was it real I guess we'll

never know You know just little things like that

and you start seeing it. It's just kind of you

go Wow, there's some nice little twists to it.

You think that oh my god She's really destroyed

it and then you find out. Oh, no, but maybe it

was something else valuable You kind of get that

tug going on throughout the entire movie and

I like that. I really did The back -and -forth

tug -of -war between the two of them, but who's

really gonna give first? I mean he really doesn't

Have anything that you know I mean he's ready

to walk with her. You know it's really her that

has to struggle to You know to kind of tug on

to the life that she has built to this point

versus going with him and doing whatever the

hell she wants Yeah, and that whole will she

won't she thing that was that was exciting I

mean, I actually liked that point because you

weren't sure what you're gonna do until the very

end Yeah I think one of the best scenes that

they did well they did this in the beginning

But I can't believe they did it in the end as

well because like you were mentioning they did

the misdirection in the beginning the misdirection

at the end was And what I like about films that

have Dennis Leary as a supporting character is

that he doesn't necessarily have to be the Dennis

Leary we all know and see online and in interviews

and in other things. most the time he he's very

brash he's very in your face and i don't have

a problem with that i like so what is care a

lot of the characters that he's played he was

brilliant and rescue me as the lead character

of the effects uh... but what i find is is the

films he stars in a most of them aren't are like

the second role or the third role or usually

not the main Main actor yeah, you know it's usually

not and that's kind of a good thing. I mean look

at him in in small soldiers Yes, yes, it's like

Good I was gonna say one of my favorite roles

with him Was him playing the dad or the stepfather

in the sandlot it was that to me was like oh

my god He's playing a completely different role.

He's not an asshole like he isn't everything

else and that really kind of surprised me Yeah,

absolutely I Mean he really He's really come

a long way He really really has So, you know,

like I said the the plot for this was great.

I thought the The pacing was really good as I

already said the music was great. The acting

is wonderful even a lot of support like the The

other detective that's his partner, the... Yeah.

Frankie Faison? Yeah. Frankie Faison, yeah. That

guy is basically at least what I... Now that

I know that it's McTarran that directed it, I

think I knew that in the back of my mind, but

now that I've actually looked it up, I'm thinking,

wow. Leary? is mcclain frankie is uh oh god yeah

carl winslow yes um i couldn't i couldn't think

of his name and uh al yeah al that's what it

was in die hard thomas crown affair has since

99 it really has held up honestly oh yeah mean

like I said before me personally the 68 version

I watched it and I didn't come away with it feeling

as good as I do when I when I watch this And

you've got all of these blockbuster stars in

this movie. You've got Brosnan, who as we already

said by this point had done two Bond films. You

got Leary who did a whole bunch of other stuff.

You've got Rene Russo, who by this point had

already finished two Lethal Weapon films. And

she's been in a number of others. That's one

of the movies we're gonna have to cover it once

sometime soon here in wire is when she reunited

with Mel Gibson for ransom Yes, that all wowed

that one was so good and she actually made me

think that a live -action Natasha could work

because she was Natasha of Boris and Natasha

in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle in

2000. Yes. Yes, you're right. I mean, she's just

had a long standing career of doing really, really

good films. Oh, yeah. Go ahead. I mean, she's

had some stinkers, too. Don't get me wrong. You

know, Get Shorty, I don't think was necessarily

one of her better ones. But again, it was one

of these Ensemble casts Yep I mean she's got

a whole list of amazing things to look forward

to from And Dennis Leary, I mean Dennis Leary

has done some awesome stuff as well He played

he brought George Stacey to life and death in

the amazing spider -man films He was the voice

of Diego in the Ice Age movies That was just

perfect. I mean his his whole attitude was just

like oh, yeah, you know, whatever Demolition

man that was probably one of my more favored

roles, but it was him basically Yeah, it really

was He was in the National Lampoon's loaded weapon

one. Oh my god You know alright, so Thomas Crown

Affair It is a really damn good movie if you

like the old movies go back and check out the

Steve McQueen version I absolutely love that

they gave Faye Dunaway the therapist role in

the 99 version because it's still her Working

with a crown yeah, you know and and and and in

the chemistry between the two of them It's ever

so subtle between Faye Dunaway and Pierce Brosnan

because he's just talking to her and She's just

let her character is just laughing at him all

the way because she's already let her character

is even though it's psychologist character She

has already lived through all this. Oh, yeah,

she already knows his personality and you can

see it coming and it's just like, okay Absolutely,

I cannot recommend this movie enough It's a really

really good movie the plot flows very very well

It's definitely got hooks I mean if because I'll

be honest my wife is not one to really sit down

and watch action films She's never really been

like that so for her to come in and sit there

and go oh What's going on and you know sit down

and go okay? So he's with her and what did he

do again? For her to get hooked like that. It's

a big thing this you know, you know for this

to happen I would have to say this is highly

highly Just yeah You know now that I think about

this more and more and I think about him doing

you know at his office and Talking about you

know doing business and acquiring things everything

else the more I think about it the more I realized

that this is a very late 20th century pretty

woman without the hooker angle Yeah, if you think

about it, he's a super rich guy and she's not

you know Her character is not poor by any means

and like I said, she's not a hooker, but he is

leading her on you know towards a life of She

even asks him, you know And this kind of goes

back to what you disagreed with where I said

she kind of follows by the book She even asks

him, you know, how would I hide the money? I

would teach you. Yeah, you know, and it's one

of those things where it Just the I don't know

if it's the fact that in this she's a redhead

That it reminds me so much of Julia Roberts being

a redhead and pretty woman But it's just Well,

it's just so interesting. Yeah. Well, I mean

now that you've said that of course, I'm gonna

have to point out There's a scene where you know,

she comes out and you see all you see is her

boots And they're walking out of the car and

I'm you know, they're the thigh high boots And

so of course now thinking that all I can think

of is Julia Roberts character and pretty woman

with the thigh. I'm pretty woman. Yep. Yep Thomas

crown affair is a wonderful wonderful film. There

are really no plot holes that they that they

leave open There's really no room for a sequel

either. Thank God. They haven't tried to remake

this version Well, you heard that they wanted

to do a sequel, right? Oh Really? Yeah, they

were gonna do it What was it? Thomas crown and

let me see here. Where did I see this? See sequel

there I go long been in development hell January

2007 2013 Verhoeven said he had left the project

due to script changes and changes in the regime

April 2014 edition of Empire John Martin and

revealed he had written a script for a sequel

whilst in prison Called the Thomas crown and

the missing lioness you know Yeah, I think I

think Pierce Hate to say this, but I think Brosnan

is too old now You know People said the same

thing about Sean Connery And Sean Connery went

back to go do entrapment with Yeah, what's her

name? Michael Douglas's wife yeah, I can't remember

Jones Jones captain's yeah, so I mean you know

he said he still at his advanced stage is still

getting spy type stuff spy roles to play so Think

that Pierce Brosnan could pull it off Whether

he would I don't know I I don't know that he

would fit into it the dude is 61 years old right

now, so When he was in his prime I guess you

could say He was in 99 he was 40 he's basically

almost you know close to 20 years apart He was

46 and 99 when he did the first film for Thomas

Crown. I mean, I don't know, because if they

were going to work on a sequel, would they get

the same cast again? How would they move the

plot along? There really isn't a lot of plot

details or anything. I don't even think things

in production. I just think that McTiernan has

something that he wants to do. I don't think

that it's going to happen anytime soon. Yeah,

I seen this. I really hope they don't. But I

mean, it's possible, but. Let's leave it where

it is. Yeah, I mean, I think it's a film that

can stand on its own without a sequel. I don't

think it should be remade again. No, because

you know what's going to happen if they remake

this. The cast is going to be 10 times younger.

And it's gonna you know it may go back to being

a bank robbery or it may you know hey, let's

go oh I'm having flash. Oh no flashes are like

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber playing in this

no no no no no no see Here's the worst thing

I was gonna go one worse than that. Here's the

thing they could basically take this plot put

Harold and Kumar in it, and they steal from White

Castle. Yeah, yeah, I can see that. I love this

film. The Pierce Brosnan -René Rousseau -Thomas

Crown Affair. It has everything you want in a

suspenseful movie. As I said before, there's

not much that isn't believable, or isn't... You

don't have to do too much suspension of disbelief

to see if this would actually happen. And he

as a criminal, Crown as a criminal, doesn't do

a lot of stuff to... I mean sure, they've linked

it back to him. She's trying, you know, as weird

as she's trying to find out if he really did

do it. Because I always watch these like crime

shows on like investigation discovery and CNBC

like American greed and all this and all that

right And it's like all these people do one stupid

mistake or do one stupid one or two or three

or ten different stupid things He didn't do too

many stupid things. He just kept it going because

he didn't leave a trail Yeah, he you know, he

didn't do anything like that. He didn't call

his mom to confess or anything like that But

Thomas Crown Affair, absolutely love it. Yeah.

there's not much really to pick apart with this

one I guess if I really had a nitpick I would

say the police force wasn't it didn't seem like

they were that interested other than Leary other

than Leary and his partner and Banning 100 million

dollar painting gets stolen from the Metropolitan

Metropolitan Art Museum you would think that

okay sure it's not you know the whitey bulger

murders, but at least you would think That you

know the New York Police Department would have

You know what I mean a lot more cops on this

yeah Well and like when you see them there in

the when you see in the museum, and there's all

the crime tape around Normally you would see

crime taping you'd see everybody dusting for

fingerprints or you know doing this and that

you'd see like You know CSI is all throughout

there. You didn't yeah, I was kind of like oh

that and I thought that it was kind of This is

a little odd, but okay. You know maybe they were

done at that point. That's all I could figure

Overall for me I still love this film I can what

I I love this film so much and I've seen it so

many times I can actually I still I because I

recorded on my DVR to watch it before before

we did this episode So I didn't look at it on

Netflix. I used my cable box I've had this on

my DVR for about I don't know three and a half

months now Whenever I can't get to sleep I know

this is gonna sound bad and this is not anything

against the movie It's because of the damn music

in it I can always put this on, there isn't a

lot of explosions, there isn't a lot of, you

know, it is a high, it's an action suspense thriller

movie, but there isn't a lot of, you know, this

isn't Die Hard, John McClane isn't gonna blow

up a helicopter with a car. So I can put this

on, I can roll over and fall asleep listening

to this movie. The soundtrack is nice and soothing,

too, when you think about it. It's not overly

obnoxious. So yeah, you're right. Yeah, absolutely.

Alright, for me on the GCR and Universal rating

scale, I'm going to give this a 5 out of 5 stars,

which is perfect. Like I said, there are a few

things that I could nitpick at, but the nitpicks

still do not take away my overall enjoyment of

the movie. What about you, sir? What are you

going to give it? I think I'm going to go with

the same. I'm going to give it 5 stars as well.

The only nitpick thing, and this is me because

I'm male. Okay, Renee Russo naked good thing

seeing Pierce Brosnan's ass didn't need to Okay,

that was it yeah I Don't know it always it's

so strange to me seeing major female stars naked

on screen. Yeah Especially her is not like yeah,

I didn't I didn't not enjoy it But there that

there are times for me that you know a scantily

clad dress is more attractive on a woman than

actually seeing bare breasts That whole dance

scene when she's pulling the dress up and in

you know moving around I was I gotta admit that

was more distracting because I thought oh I might

actually see something but Versus when you actually

saw everything Cuz it's like cuz I watched that

That when I watched the movie again, and I'm

like I saw that scene. I'm like Okay, they're

really going for it. They're going with that

our rating and Is one of those things I think

This might be a future movie we can review episode

actually I know it will be we're gonna take a

look at the at the MMPAA or MPAA and uh... because

it really shocks me what is are these days and

what is p g thirteen oh yeah and it really because

uh... i am so desensitized all these p g thirteen

movies which some of them honestly should be

are when i actually see an old reader and i mean

all i mean at least fifteen sixteen years uh...

when i actually see it an old read our movie

i'm like well okay so that happened okay so Yeah,

this movie must be rated R as like wow. Yeah

It's it's a little crazy Coming up all right,

so Thomas Crown Affair amazing movie Coming up

on M wire. I think next time we're gonna be suiting

up for SWAT. I think I'm trying to think, what

else do we got coming up on MWIRE? We've got

a Halloween episode this year that's going to

happen. And it's going to be all about shrunken

heads and ghosts and goblins and everything else.

What have you got coming up over at Talking About

My Generation? Well, we have quite a bit. We're

going to be shooting for... We just got back

from Comic -Con and... They were talking about

the Phineas and Ferb Star Wars. We're going to

be doing an episode there for Phineas and Ferb's

Star Wars episode. We have Cocktail coming out

with Tom Cruise and Elizabeth Shue. I'm shooting

to possibly do a movie themes like movie music,

movie montage type thing. And we'll kind of have

to see how that will work out. We'll just go

from there. I'm looking forward to it. Absolutely.
