Legends of the Hidden Temple

Next on Nickelodeon, it's Salute Your Shorts,

followed by Legends of the Hidden Temple. It's

time for the Telecast, brought to you by the

host Optimus Solo and I'd like to say hello and

welcome to the 17th episode of the Telecast brought

to you by the Geekcast Radio Network. Today we

are continuing our look at game shows from our

childhood and to help me out once again is JT

from Saskatoon. Hello sir. Good day to you. Good

day to you. And today the two of us are going

to be talking about That's right folks we are

talking about Legends of the Hidden Temple. And

before we get too far into our discussion, here's

a little quick background information on the

show. It debuted in 1993, aired three seasons

until 1995 on Nickelodeon, and it aired for a

total of 120 episodes, 40 episodes per season.

For those of you that don't know, Legends of

the Hidden Temple was a game show in which teams

consisting of two children a piece competed to

retrieve artifacts by answering questions based

on history, geography, mythology, and different

subjects. and then eventually would compete in

some other physical challenger type events as

well. So JT, what do you remember about Legends

of the Hidden Temple? I remember I wanted to

be on this show more than I ever wanted to be

on Guts. Yes. I agree with you 100%. If only

for the simple fact it would have allowed me

to live out my Indiana Jones fantasies in some

small fashion. A lot of people compare this to

like a Jeopardy meets Indiana Jones type. You

know, like a quiz show meets some type of hidden...

Well, obviously the title is hidden temple, but

you know, all these trap doors and different

things. Yeah. This looked like one of the coolest

ones to be on. I mean, out of all the game shows

that I remember from being a kid, like this,

at least four, and we'll get into it a little

bit more, but the temple run at the end, that

was the most intense. look like is the coolest

thing there and you just wanted to see if you

could do it because it looked like something

that like the agro craig is easy it looks easy

to get up like it's just how fast can you do

it this one was actually hard yeah and there

was I mean unlike the craig there wasn't like

you know these hidden jets blowing can silvery

confetti you know I think you look pretty simple

to get up but there's ample opportunity for you

to fall down and crack yourself in the head yeah

I mean you're wearing a helmet but still But

no, this one, like the initial, like the physical

challenges, there were some of them, like there's,

and we'll talk about it later, there's some where

you do some bungee jumping things and you got

to spell out like events or the names of locations

that are, deal with the theme of the day. But

no, I mean, this one, it just, I keep trying

to cram education into these. It's like, I'm

sorry. It's just not right, but. It's a kid showing,

well, the kid's got to be educated somehow, and

might as well do it this way. But overall, this

is probably outside of a certain other show that

will be discussed later on in the series. This

is probably one of my favorite game shows that

I watched growing up. I actually agree about

100%. This is one of the two or three game shows

that... I loved Way More Than Guts. I actually

would make sure I could watch the show. As a

kid I had no idea when Guts was on. I think I

just watched it if it happened to be on when

I was watching TV. But with Legends of the Hidden

Temple I actually knew when it was on and my

sister and I always made sure we were there to

watch it. It's just all kinds of fun. There's

just so many things that we can get into so hopefully

people will be interested to hear our thoughts

as we go through here. Let's just get right into

the who's who. It's not a lot. There's only really

two people to talk about. Number one is the host,

Kirk Fogg. If you are not familiar with that

name, there's a good reason for that. What were

your opinions on Kirk Fogg as a host? I know

you were sharing a few things off air, but for

the listeners out there, what did you think of

the host on this one? Eminently forgettable.

Looking at the guy, he looks ... Like I should

know him from somewhere. He's just got that kind

of face. Mm -hmm, but I And I say forgettable

because it's very truly I don't know I don't

can recall anything I've ever seen this guy in

besides Legends of the Hidden Temple, right and

I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't done it

beyond Legends of the Hidden Temple but He looks

like a host like Like he has the look for a game

show host to me. Like you just look at him and

you're like, Oh, that guy is probably a game

show host. But, uh, and then he kind of has the

sound for it, but like, you're right. Like even

though it seems like he fit the role and he's

also very forgettable. Yeah. Cause I mean, you

look at him, he's got that kind of, uh, proto

Jeff probes from survivor. Like he's just got

that yes, a square jaw, all American man. Yeah.

You know, and that it's, he, Think of the right

word to describe like because I watched an episode

of YouTube last night and and and he had a motion

and He was doing good play -by -play, but there

was just no passion right see for me You know

if I compare him to the one from the last episode

with Michael Malley and guts Like I know you

might have a different opinion, but for me somehow

I wasn't as annoyed with Kirk Fogg as I was with

Michael Malley because Michael Malley was so

energetic and so over the top. To me, Michael

Malley's play -by -play, he would often get confused

or get stuck and then just throw it over to Moe

because he didn't know where he was going with

his own thought process. Whereas Kirk Fogg's

play -by -play was more accurate. It wasn't over

the top, but it also wasn't emotional hardly

at all. Yeah, it was just kind of like bland,

but it was better play -by -play But it like

didn't like capture you like you didn't tune

in to legend of the hidden temple to see Kirk

fog Yeah, no His was more consistent Like his

play -by -play, but again, like I said, there's

just no substance to this guy almost and not

to knock the guy like I'm sure You know, he worked

hard and all that the show it's just yeah, and

I was listening to an interview he gave and he

actually said that He doesn't like watching any

episodes from the first season because he says

like in the first season he just didn't have

a clue what he was doing. He had him in a different

outfit and everything but he said by the time

second and third season he had taken a lot of

at his craft and get accustomed to it. I didn't

watch enough episodes to see if I could notice

a noticeable difference between the first season

and the other seasons, but he was trying hard

and I'll give him that. I guess for me, he didn't

add anything to the show, but he didn't take

anything away. Exactly. He didn't hurt, he didn't

help either. I think there's only really one

other person we can talk. About and I know this

almost should be in like the things you didn't

know about Legends of the hidden temple section,

but we're gonna talk about it here in the who's

who because everybody remembers Olmec You know

the big head with the moving mouth that talked

deep and whatnot I did not know until this week

Who the voice was behind Olmec? But it is none

other than D Bradley Baker who anybody that knows

anything about animation these days or voice

acting He is one of the busiest guys around.

Yeah, he's kind of up there with like Kevin Michael

Richardson Yeah, I heard his voice in like a

thousand different roles. Yeah, and this was

one of his first things he had done like one

or two projects before Hidden Temple, and then

he kind of did this and I guess at the time he

was living in Orlando or he was down in that

area since that's where all these Nickelodeon

game shows were filmed. In the interview with

Kirk Fogg, Kirk Fogg even says that he told Dee

Bradley Baker, like, you got a fantastic tool.

You need to get out of Orlando and go to LA or

something and get some more work. I don't know

if that's the main reason why he went on to do,

to start doing all that and move to LA or do

whatever he did. Kind of interesting that he

got a start here on the Legends of the Hidden

Temple. Yeah, no, I mean, because you look at

some of the stuff he went on to do like Ben 10

and Codename Kids Next Door and stuff like that.

But yeah, I love the character such as it was

on the show of Olmec because he was more of the

host, like dropping the info than Kirk Fogg was.

He's running the questions, he's given the story,

he gives that, I love the one episode I watched

on YouTube, he gave the awesome description of

all the different areas and rooms that you can

go through in the temple at the end of the episodes.

And he just had the way he did Olmec, he had

this kind of stately, almost rocky voice, just

as would be fit a giant talking stone idol. He's

like, you know, like we said for Kirk Fawke,

we said like he didn't take anything away. He

didn't add anything. He didn't hurt and help.

It's not the case with Olmec. Olmec was the show.

Yeah. Like that's why people tuned in. Besides

like seeing some of the events and wanting to

be on the actual show and doing stuff or whatever,

like Olmec added to the show. Oh yeah. No, it's

uh, and it wasn't very often, I remember, but

he would occasionally get a couple of good zingers.

In his little little speaking part. So he had

a cool look like I mean is this is giant like

cool looking like You know Mayan esque Temple

God face look going and it just everything nice

Yeah, everything fit together the way his mouth

moved was kind of cool. It seemed like pretty

fluid So it was just a great idea to have him

as a part of the show and a without him you don't

They wouldn't have successfully gotten that Indiana

Jones Mayan temple old school feel to it. It

would have been just a game show trying to do

that, but with him it actually made it feel like

it. Certainly I like legends of the hidden table.

It just kind of added to the overall aesthetic.

Right. The elements of the show just all kind

of came together, so. And that's what made me

like this game show maybe even more than Guts

and some of those other things was because I

had this kind of magic to it, this old, you know,

I can't think of anything better to say than

Indiana Jones feel to it, but that's what drew

me to this show. Yeah. But the only thing that

could have made it more like Indiana Jones is

if Fogg came down in a cowboy hat and a whip.

And then they had to go across to pit of snakes

or something. Yeah. Although in the second and

third season, Fogg did start coming in on ropes

and being lowered into the set and stuff like

that. So they did get a little bit more crazy,

but they couldn't do too much. He didn't seem

like the most, I don't know, agile stuntman in

the world, so to speak. But I think that does

it for the two people. I mean, that's it for

the who's who. I tried to find anything on some

of the contestants and it doesn't seem like we

had too many contestants that went on to do anything

like we had the NSYNC person in Guts or whatever.

So, I guess it is time for... The Good. The Bad.

The Ugly. That's right, it's time for The Good,

The Bad, and The Ugly of Legends of the Hidden

Temple, and I just have a few notes written down.

I'll let you add some stuff if you want, but

the first part I just want to talk about the

contestants a little bit, because we kind of

talked about the contestants in Guts as kind

of being like the, I don't know... in the scrap

heap of athletic ability. The contestants on

Legends of the Hidden Temple had to be between

11 and 14 years old. Now, to me, it seemed like

you had a pretty good mix here. You had some

pretty decent athletes. It didn't seem like we

had the retarded athlete, Gene Pool. It didn't

seem like we had the star athletes either, but

it seemed like they did a good job of just getting

your average everyday kids on this one. pretty

physically demanding show. Let's, you know, to

call a spade a spade. Like some of those things

you have to be able to put one foot in front

of the other consistently in order not to wipe

your ass out. But no, I mean this one, it's good,

just good solid physical activity without it

being too complicated. Like I know a lot of episodes,

like they started with like what six teams. Yeah,

they start with six teams and then they go down

to four and then they go down to two and we'll

go through the rounds here in a second. Yeah,

but it was like a round robin in every episode

almost and like that for a lot of times it's

basically you got a shitting across this giant

rubber covered rope over a shallow pool and yeah,

you know, you can't wipe out. Otherwise you got

to start all over again. Well, one thing I liked

that they didn't do in here, that they didn't

waste any time talking to the contestants a lot.

They didn't do the spill your guts and give us

a bunch of information. For me, I kind of liked

that they didn't do that because it left more

time for the actual action. You basically got

the two kids, like each team was two kids. You

got their names and what team they were. That's

about it, yeah. Well and they didn't, it seemed

like on this show they didn't, like in Guts we

talked about the fact that they were trying to

fill time a lot while people were getting ready

for different events and they would do that by

telling us stuff we didn't need to know and recapping

the score and you know doing this or that. They

packed so much stuff into this one that we didn't

have to have any of that. This was a much faster

paced game show it seemed to me because there

was no filler. It was like from one thing right

to the next to the next to the next. Yeah, there's

very few slow moments. It's like, okay, here

are these teams. Let's do the first event. Here's

the next event. Let's go. It's like pow, pow,

pow. They kept cracking the whip. It's almost

like it was almost too fast. They weren't spending

enough time on stuff, but I kind of liked it

better than the pace that we had in Guts where

you have to fill time for two or three minutes

while people are getting harnessed up for a next

bungee cord jumping thing or whatever. Plus,

you didn't have the... Mike, I had a whole pot

of coffee and then some for Work O'Malley screaming

at you the whole time. What did you think of

the team names as far as the six teams we have?

We have the Red Jaguars, the Blue Bear Cudas,

the Green Monkeys, the Orange Iguanas, the Purple

Parrots and the Silver Snakes. What did you think

about how they did with the names and the shirts

and all that? I wanted the Green Monkey shirt

so bad that I always cheered for the monkeys.

Yeah, they had some interesting shirts and I

guess the team members from each team actually

got to keep their shirts when they left Except

so they did that they got to keep something from

the show. Yes. They got to actually keep their

shirts except for the silver snakes The silver

snakes did not get to keep their shirts because

their shirts were Altered so that they would

show up better on camera. Okay, so they got to

take home a replica shirt That wasn't altered.

I guess I don't know if it was it was made out

of reflective tape I don't know like they didn't

get to take their own shirts home I don't know

if they recycled the shirts that were altered

for film and everybody had to wear the same shirt

So they didn't get to take those home or what

and just to mention like for our listeners That

if you listen the guts, you know, they didn't

get to take home the the piece of the radical

rock Yes, they didn't even get to take home the

right I go Craig So, kudos for Legends of Hidden

Temple actually letting them take something home.

I can almost see some guy in the meetings like,

okay, we take the rock away from the kids and

then Guts, they're keeping the shirts, man. Exactly.

I want to get in a little bit more detail about

the round -by -round stuff that they would go

through. Obviously, the first event was really

a pretty quick one because you had six teams

and it was just kind of like the introductory

thing to whittle it down to four immediately.

Usually, it had something to do with a moat,

where they'd have to cross by doing different

things. I know I saw one where they had to go

through different little inflatable tubes, like

the inner tubes. They kind of looked like tires,

and they'd have to crawl through one to the next

to the next until they got across or whatnot.

Then there was always this little button that

they would hit at the end that would ring a gong.

But they had different ways to cross this mold,

but basically the first four teams I got across

were good, and the last two teams you never heard

from again. What do you think about this opening

way of doing things? Well, like I said, the whole

round robin aspect is something I liked. Again,

it's an equalizer in a way that you got six teams,

because I remember reading they had to go through

a physical test and a written test. qualify for

the show. So I mean, you already had that. So

out of all the kids and say given week that are

on this show, you know, you get it down to six

and then, okay, we got to cut two teams. And

so yeah, this was a pretty, I think it was a

pretty decent way. Like everyone gets, it's a

level playing field. Everyone got a chance to,

you know, swing for the fences. And how pissed

would you have been if you would have actually

got on the game show and got out in that first

round? Oh, I would have been. I would have been

so pissed. I would have been like, you've got

to be freaking kidding me. I was like, dad, get

the wallet. We're going to Dairy Queen. Exactly.

It's a therapy. Yeah. So that was the first round.

So it was kind of more of a physical thing. Just

quick eliminate two teams. And I think they usually

gave away a prize to those two teams. Like they'd

get a pair of shoes or something or something

really ridiculous. And then it would go to the

second round, which was the steps of knowledge.

Now, this was by far the easiest part of the

show because basically every show had a theme.

It was like the story of the legend of so -and

-so or the legend of this and the whole show

was themed after that or based around that theme.

So the steps of knowledge, you'd have Olmec and

he would tell a story about the legend and then

basically right after it, they would ask you

questions about the story and you would answer

it. and get to move down these steps. So you

start with four teams across four steps, and

then there's like three steps on the next thing

or something, or two steps. Eventually you get

down to where you only have these two teams.

But the questions were so easy, like I don't

understand some of the, this is where some of

the kids showed not to be very bright. Yeah,

because I mean, you know, drops the legend of

the day on whatever artifact they're looking

for. Some of the questions he asked, and again

it goes back to them doing that written test

beforehand, because some of the questions he

asked wouldn't necessarily be in the legend that

he gives you. That's true. Again, like I said

before this thing, the whole round robin aspect

really comes in a sharp focus and the steps of

knowledge because Unless you know what you're

talking about You're gonna be standing up at

the head of the top of the stairs there with

this sad look on your face and basically what

how you did it is there were each step had like

these little markings on and you would step on

them and it would like light up and then you'd

get to answer kind of like as a buzzing in thing

there an ancient marking yeah, the thing about

this one is like This is why I would have been

pissed if I would have ever got off and got eliminated

in that first round because I guarantee If I

got to the second round I am making it to the

third round Like, I am not going to fail at the

steps of knowledge unless there's like someone

that is so fast at buzzing in. And the funny

part is that some people were getting those ...

I mean, some of them just got like ... I know

some of them, they had to know stuff that wasn't

necessarily said, but some stuff it was like

just instantly recalling stuff that they just

said. And it was kind of funny to see some of

the people get them wrong. Like, you weren't

listening. I know. And it's like I said, how

Olmec would sometimes give a little ... Snide

remark is because if someone hit the marking

and like buzzed in while he was still asking

the question He would immediately stop talking.

Yeah, you know that is correct didn't they move

on down? So this one yeah, I remember one of

them. He's like that was not a choice Yeah, it's

like oh shoot and yeah, and aside from like I

think one game that goes on In the third round,

this is the most educational aspect. Right, this

is their insert of education content. Yeah, it's

like, stop training shoehorn learning into fun.

So after the steps of knowledge, we'd be left

with two teams. and then they would go to something

called the temple games and this was a pretty

cool part they had some pretty cool games in

here and basically what they they did is they

had like three physical challenges almost kinda

like you know like double their head their physical

challenges or whatever uh... and you would earn

half uh... or whole pendants of life as they

called it uh... usually the first two physical

challenges were each a half pendant and then

the the last one was a full pendant and you know

these would come into play in our final round

but the each challenge was kind of cool like

I saw one where they were like um they had like

these balls that they were like slingshotting

into these things to try to knock them over um

they had like a little thing where you were on

this pole and they were spinning around and you

had to hold on as long as you could and I mean

they just seemed like kind of fun little physical

challenges I mean it wasn't like they were like

impossible or whatever it was just like quick

like 60 second challenges. Yeah. No, it's, uh,

again, it just kept with like the, the, the breakneck

pace of the shows. It just kept going and going

and going. Uh, one of my favorites was, uh, and

it kind of harken back to guts where they strap

one of the kids into this like bungee, uh, bungee

cord harness and they got to, you know, back

up a couple of steps, keep a running bounce and

grab these magnetic letters and bounce back to

the other side. slap them up in the correct order

to spell out a location or a name of someone

involved with the legend. And then, you know,

whoever gets it done first gets, like, you know,

the pendant to life or half pendant to however

it works. So this part was probably, aside from

the Temple run, the Temple Games is probably

my favorite because you got a couple of good

because the The moat and the steps of knowledge

out of like the 20 20 minute runtime of the show

Only really takes up like maybe 10 minutes Yeah,

and the good part about the temple games is it's

not just one little thing you get a you know

You're getting a couple chances like you know,

you're gonna be competing in three different

challenges. So it's not like it's like Over before

it even begins when you're all sudden you're

eliminated I also saw one where they were in

some type of harness and they would have to pick

these little ball, like these squishy balls up

or whatever with their feet and then they would

get swung across and they'd have to try to drop

them in a little target. That was kind of, looked

like it would be fun. And then what would happen

if there ever was a tie, like let's say one team,

let's say the Blue Bear Kudos won the first two

half pendants and then the... Orange iguanas

won the full pennant in the third game. So they

both had one full pendant They would ask them

a question to break the tie that had to do that

had to do with the legend and whoever had the

most penance was who got to advance to the Final

round which was the temple run And this is where

legends of the hidden temple kicks ass. Oh, yeah,

first of all, this is the most complex set building

thing for a game show I think I've ever seen.

Never mind the fact that this thing is... It's

like playing a video game for real. You've got

multiple paths, multiple options, the temple

guards who are these guys that come out in these

freaky deaky Aztec... Mayan type costumes and

I think I'm pretty sure if I ever went through

this as a kid I probably would have needed a

change of underwear because Freaky Diki is a

perfect description of those guys actually yeah

because you never know where like they had all

sorts of hidden holes for these guys to pop out

of and grab you and oh and you know when you're

in the moment when you're so focused on trying

to get from point A to point B and get stuff

and somebody jumps out you know that that's It

could be very scary no matter who you are because

you're not even thinking about that. You're just

going around. You know it's there. You have that

fear in your head, maybe in the back of your

head, but you can't think about it. Yeah, and

the other thing that I always thought watching

this, the Temple Run, is it looked like a life

-size playset from some toy line. Oh, it's so

awesome. There's basically, to describe it a

little bit more for those that aren't aware,

there's 12 or 13 rooms on at least two to three

different levels of height. Basically, each room

has a doorway or something that goes to the adjacent

room. It's like a maze, but each room has its

own theme, its own trick. Basically, you have

to find a way to open the door to get to the

next room for a lot of them. Like the Shrine

of the Silver Monkey, you have to put these three

pieces of the monkey together to get to the next

room. There was a laser room where you had six

panels and you had to uncover the one that has

the white laser shooting out of it to unlock

into the next room. Some kids would get so stuck

on one of the things. I can just remember almost

screaming at the television set, like, �You got

to do this, or you got to turn this around, or

why are you going that way? You�re going the

long way.� But just to describe it a little bit

more before we get our thoughts on some of these

things, like you said, the temple guards would

jump out and if the temple guard jumped out,

you had to give away a pendant to that person

if you wanted to keep going and if you didn't

have any pendants left, you were done and then

the other person got to run in and try to catch

up and do everything. And once you got the artifact,

which was in one of the random rooms, the artifact

that kind of ties in with the legend for that

day, once you grab that, all the doors open,

all the temple guards vanish, and you just have

to book ass, haul ass out of the place and get

basically out of the temple before your time

runs up. And you had three minutes to complete

this all. That's not just three minutes per person,

that's three minutes for the team. Yeah. I always

thought it sucked because... I mean, I love this.

This is probably one of my favorite bonus rounds

of like, well, one of my two favorite bonus rounds

of all game shows. But what sucked sometimes

for the team, though, was that one person sometimes

didn't even get to go. Like, sometimes the first

person would take like literally all the time

and the other person would have like 20 seconds

to go do something. And I always felt bad for

that person. Yeah, no, because it's like the

first one's being a dumbass. Like and a lot of

times like there'd be like the Medusa room where

you have to Stick these snakes into the head

in order to unlock the door to go forward Or

the shrine of the silver monkey, which was my

favorite Yeah, and sometimes my least favorite

because you get some people it's not that hard

to figure out how to put the friggin statue together

Right people have like the head face in the wrong

way Yeah, or they have the middle section on

the bottom. It's like, oh, come on, people. Yeah.

One of the episodes I watched, it was kind of

funny because Olmec kind of gives you a preview

of the Temple Run before you go on it. And he's

like, you can go this way. And he names four

different rooms to the artifact. And then he's

like, or you can go this way. And the next one's

like 12 rooms to get there. And the people tried

that way like they didn't start with the one

that was the quick way. I'm like, what are you

doing? Like that makes no sense. You're going

the long way and they didn't win. I'm so sad

But I want to smack them sometimes Yeah, and

you know, they would win prizes as they went

Sometimes they'd win up to like three different

prizes for the temple run Now, everybody that

was involved, all the contestants, all six teams,

I believe, won something. Yeah, you might win

a backpack or a pair of shoes or some type of

book or whatever, but in the final round, the

one I watched, there was three different prizes.

One was luggage that they got and then they also

could get a karaoke machine and then a three

-day, I think it was a three -day cruise. I don't

know. They're dated for their time, obviously.

I mean, it was just stuff. Yeah, I watched the

one last night. It's like, you could win this

boombox. And I was like, ooh, a double deck tape

player. Right. I mean, I guess you're really

not on these game shows for the prizes, I guess.

It's not like you're going on Who Wants to be

a Millionaire and you're going because you want

to win a million dollars or some of these game

shows for adults. When you're a kid and you're

going on some of these game shows, you're going

on there for the experience. So, I mean, the

prizes are just kind of an extra bonus, but I

don't know. Some of the prizes were okay, some

of them were not. I don't know. At least you

get to keep your stuff. Oh, yeah. You're not

going away empty -handed. So, what was your favorite

part about the overall show throughout the four

different rounds and all that? What were the

parts you liked the best? The tempo run. Yeah.

It's pretty much the tempo. Everything else looked

fun and everything, but come on, if you make

it to round four, the tempo run, you are Indiana

Jones. I can't speak for the girls, but every

boy that would have got there, the music is going

through their head. I would have given up so

much stuff as a kid to be able to do that one

time. Oh, yeah. Because it just looks so badass.

It looks so fun. I mean, I'm not saying this

would go through your head, but you know, I'm

going through there. I'm humming the song. Yeah.

And at the very least, that one line of Salas

from The Last Crusade, the dog, that that would

have been going through my mind, because I'm

thinking Indiana Jones. Yeah. I just would like

to go through one time just to see if I could

do it. It's one thing where you felt like you

could do it, but it wasn't like guts where you

knew you could get up the crag without a problem.

Yeah, you might take a little bit longer, but

you know you can do it. This one is like, can

I really get all that and put all these things

together? I mean, you think you can. It would

just be fun to try and see if you can do it within

the three minutes. There's not a lot of bad stuff

about this show to me. Steps of knowledge was

kind of a little cheesy And the host wasn't like

spectacular, but overall I mean from beginning

to the end it was a fast -paced fun Game show

that I didn't really have any complaints about

except that I didn't get to participate. Yeah

And also For the run only being three minutes.

It could be pretty damn intense and looking up

Info on the show. It's it. Oh, don't don't don't

don't go too far here. Don't you don't give away

my things? You don't know about the show But

it's just for It's just I'm amazed that you know,

they can make three minutes of television. So

intense. Oh, yeah for sure I think someone out

there with a lot of money Should have recreate

the aggro Craig and the temple run some of the

stuff from Double Dare, all these things from

our childhood and create an amusement park where

you can go through all the different bonus rounds

from game shows from the past. As an adult. As

an adult now, and they would have a gold mine

on their hands. Oh, God, yes. Because how many

people, first of all, would want to try it as

an adult, and second, would want to take their

kids and let them try it? Yeah. Literally, if

that happened, I'm going in there with the Indiana

Jones hat and one of those... No doubt. The toy

whips that play the music like they can have

a kid's version and adult version side -by -side

of these different events or like obstacle courses

or different stuff like even like take like the

the the obstacle course at the end of American

gladiators or like You know just difference like

the double dare obstacle course like you could

do all these things It would be it would be a

heck of a lot of fun. I'd rather go there than

great America. Oh, yeah So, uh, I think it's

time for us to move into our next segment of

the show, which is... Things that make you go,

hmmm... That's right, it's time for Things You

Didn't Know About Legends of the Hidden Temple.

uh... legends won a cable ace award in nineteen

ninety five for the best game show special or

series that was its second year i believe second

or third year so they they did win for best game

show one time so hats off to them uh... number

two i thought this might be where you're going

with that one before but the number two thing

you might not know about legends of the hidden

temple out of a hundred and twenty temple rounds

or temple runs the artifact was only returned

thirty two times so the grand prize was only

one 26 .7 % of the time. So this was a hard final

round. Well, and again, and like we were saying,

sometimes if you're number two and your partner

goes in first, then they can figure out. The

monkey statue or yeah, you're just like out there.

Just Get caught by a temple guard Yeah, sometimes

I mean they usually tried to send in I thought

saw a lot of times where they try to send in

the least athletic of the two people in first

and sometimes that backfired because yes, the

the person that would come in later would be

like tearing through stuff and running through

stuff and trying to like catch up and Maybe have

a better chance, but sometimes there just wasn't

enough time left Don't know like only a fourth

of the time. Basically. They actually won. Yes,

that's intense Third thing that you might not

know about legends the hidden temple to control

the motion of Olmec's mouth a D Bradley Baker

pulled a wire that activated its movement For

the mouth the eyes on the other hand were voice

activated and grew brighter with volume so a

little inside the Olmec there I kind of wondered

how they did that And apparently the first season

there was a tear in his mouth somewhere. I don't

know. I guess if you look at first season episode,

you can see a tear in him somewhere that got

fixed later. Next ones are kind of interesting.

Number four and number five things that you might

not know about the show. They actually recorded

up to six episodes a day. And the way they did

this is they would tape all six round one motes

first. then they would tape all six steps of

knowledge and So they do it round by round So

like you'd have one set of teams and they do

the moat and then they you know I guess give

them a break and do another set of teams and

do the moat and then they do that six times and

before they went to round two So by the time

they got to the temple run Sometimes the tapings

were still going on at like 11 p .m. Midnight

1 a .m. By the time they were getting all the

teams through the temple run. Oh wow, so Sometimes

the studios had been closed by that time so the

audience wasn't even there during the temple

run and they would put like a Audio track so

that it would sound like there was an audience

watching You know suddenly it all makes sense

when someone's a complete idiot during the temple

run. Yeah, and The host in his interview said

some of these kids by the time it got to here

were just like wiped out tired like Almost not

wanting to be there sometimes or just like you

know any kid that's doing something for that

long You usually see the attention span start

to drop, but I don't know what the logistics

of it was and why they had to do It had to do

it that way but I don't know if that was all

the way through but it says that especially in

the third season you know there was a lot of

times there was nobody in the audience during

those temple run records and that's probably

why they never you know during the First couple

events they usually pan out and you see the audience.

But now that I'm thinking about it, I never recall

them showing audiences during the Temple run.

So I guess sometimes they weren't there. Yeah,

I did not know that. So interesting choice of

how to record a game show, I guess. Keep kids

up till 1 AM and then have them do the intense

bonus round at the end. Like you said, no wonder

some of them were just like, die. Yeah, exactly.

And I do have one added thing I want to throw

in there that I heard through the interview with

Kirk Fogg, a little inside scoop at some stuff.

I guess there was times that stuff would happen

during the tempo run where they would have to

stop recording or stop filming and reset things

and start again. Like I guess there was one time

where somebody like fell out of something and

they kind of had to stop it and reset the time

and then start them again. There was also a time

where one of the contestants I believe either

temple guard came out after him or something

happened and they threw up a girl threw up and

they had to stop filming like towel her off and

whatnot and then reset the time clock to whatever

it was and put her back in and have her keep

going that's just cruel So I guess it goes hand

in hand with the whole you're kind of focused

in the moment and you're doing what you're doing

and if something goes wrong or you get startled

or something, you never know what's going to

happen. So I don't know, some interesting things

that you might not have known or might not wanted

to have known about the legends of the Hidden

Temple. My illusions are all shattered. Yeah,

it's not as bad as not getting to keep the aggro

crag though. That's still the worst thing I've

ever seen. That was such a rip. As far as where

are they now, the reason like you said when we

were talking about the who's who, why you haven't

heard of Kirk Fogg or why you don't think you've

seen him in anything is because really he hasn't

been in anything. I looked him up on IMDB and

there was about four different roles that he's

had since this in almost a 20 year period here

now. He is into I guess writing and directing

his own stuff now. There was a movie that he

Directed what was it called like? Distortion

or something like that and he directed and wrote

it and starred in it and he's trying to do a

few things like that I mean, it doesn't seem

like he's had a lot of success So, I mean basically

his claim to fame will always be legends of the

hidden temple As for Dee Bradley Baker, I don't

think we really need to talk too much about him.

I mean, he's gone on to be one of the best voice

actors of a generation. Yeah, like I said, he's

like him and Kevin Michael Richardson. They're

just workhorses. Yeah, he's done some work in

the different Star Wars games and shows. Like

you said, he's done stuff in... What was the

one that you mentioned earlier? Ben 10. Yeah,

Ben 10. He's done stuff for different Scooby

-Doo projects. a lot of stuff in the Clone Wars

animated stuff. And interesting, unless, I'm

not 100 % sure this is confirmed or not, but

for those of you that are retro 80s cartoon fans,

there is a new Thundercats series coming out,

apparently, in the next year, or during this

year, actually. And I've just seen some information

that he is supposed to be voicing the character

of Slithe. So we will see if that comes true.

That would be very cool. looking up his stuff.

He plays the voice of the clock king on Batman

Brave and the Bold, who's one of my favorite

villains on that show, just because it's absolutely

insane. Yeah, and if you visit, I always plug

ever done it on here on the telecast, but if

has done. just an amazingly talented guy. So

obviously, you know, he might have started with

the Legends of the Hidden Temple, kind of, but

a lot of adventure, and maybe a hero or two.

you enjoyed some of those commercials and retro

tunes. So we're getting into the segment as far

as how you can watch this show now and unfortunately

I think the game show segment of this season

has some trends coming because it seems like

game shows don't get put out on DVD as much as

like some of the classic, you know, kids like

sitcom or live action type shows. The game shows

aren't getting the same treatment. I don't know

if that's just something that people haven't

thought about yet, but this is basically not

available on DVD. I could find nothing on Netflix

or iTunes for it. I believe it is showing currently

on a digital channel on cable. I don't know if

I get the channel or if it's Something that was

being shown like in the last couple years that

isn't shown anymore but at some point either

right now or in the recent past it has been available

on like a Nick cable digital game show type channel,

but yeah, no, it's Pretty much for what I found

there's like one complete episode on YouTube

And then there's at least three or four other

episodes, but I'll can only find like the first

two of three parts Yeah, there's not very many

that have like from beginning to end. I did find

that, and the YouTube quality is pretty clear.

It's not bad quality for the ones that I did

find. What I could find was almost all, not all

of them, but a ton of the different Temple runs.

So if you wanted to just watch the bonus round

where they were trying to get through the Temple

run in three minutes, you can find multiple of

those. I don't remember what I searched for to

find them, but on one page I had at least a dozen

different Temple Runs I could watch. But there's

not a lot where you can watch the beginning to

the end and see all four rounds. It's kind of

unfortunate the more of this isn't available.

Maybe one day somebody will get the idea and

start putting some of these game shows on DVD

because we didn't have anything with Guts, we

don't have anything with this, and I'm afraid...

to even think of, but I'm pretty sure the next

couple of episodes we're not going to be able

to find on DVD either, but we'll wait until we

get to those. I don't think it would be something

that would be bad to put on DVD. I think some

people would be interested in some of this stuff.

Well, yeah, they could do a best of or something,

because unlike Guts, they didn't have a comeback

episode where they'd bring back previous winners

or anything like that. It's pretty much like

... wash, rinse, repeat. Or Nickelodeon since

most of these game shows were on Nickelodeon.

Nickelodeon could have done some type of collection,

like one DVD set that has episodes of Guts, episodes

of Legends of the Hidden Temple, episodes of

Double Dare. It could have a few episodes of

each. I don't see what would be the harm. That

would be a good seller. Some kind of a retro

review thing like that would actually sound kind

of cool. You know, but it all depends on how

they execute it, I guess. Yeah, so I don't know.

We'll keep our eyes open and our hopes for eventually

something to be released. But as for now, you're

stuck with YouTube, so go search it out on YouTube.

And like I said, you can watch quite a few of

the temple runs at least. So let's get into our

rating system here as far as how many stars we're

going to give. Legends of the Hidden Temple 1

2 3 or 4 and a quick explanation JT. What do

you give legends? Like a two and a half like

I really do like the show But And like I said,

I'd love it, but I just don't think it holds

up today Okay, so, you know if I'll watch the

clips on YouTube, but I'm not really gonna you

know I can understand that. For me, this one,

just comparing it to the ones we've talked about

so far, which is just Guts, Guts for me was almost

painful to rewatch. It was harder for me to watch

the episodes of Guts than it was for me to watch

the Legends of the Hidden Temple episodes in

preparation for our records. I almost was into

it more with Legends of the Hidden Temple, so

if it was on TV, I would actually watch it occasionally.

I don't know if I would buy it on DVD. Like I

said, if there was some type of compilation set

that had a few episodes of all these different

game shows, I would buy it. I don't know if I

would buy one straight up for Legends of the

Hidden Temple unless it was a really good price.

But I would watch it on TV if it was on. So I'm

going to give this one a 3. I know it doesn't

completely hold up. But to me it holds up better

than some of those game shows, so I'm going to

stick with a three on this one. I don't know,

this is just one of those game shows that for

me I just really love, and for me it was far

superior than Guts, even though I wanted to be

on both of them. So what are your last words,

or final thoughts on Legend of the Hidden Temple,

anything we didn't get to, anything you didn't

get to share? No, I pretty much got all my my

thoughts out there. It's just you know after

listening to that things you didn't know it's

just Like the whole idea of it being like just

so cookie -cutter Yeah, now that I know that

just kind of takes me out of it a little bit

I ruined I ruined legends for you. Damn you Kevin

It's no longer a legend and you know how Olmec

works and it's not like that. It's like, you

know I was more crestfallen when I found out

that Kermis was really a muppet and not a frock,

but that's besides the point. Knowing that it's

just one after the other, like, okay, we're going

to do six of the opening, six of the steps. Guts

is, as much as I was annoyed by Mike O'Malley

on Guts, Almost say guts would be the better

show because you know, they're doing in front

of a live studio audience or arena Yeah, you

know this one and it's basically I Don't know

it just kind of takes it out of it. It takes

me out of it now Yeah, I can understand that

for me what sells it for me and what makes it

You know, maybe it wouldn't have been as fun

to be on as I thought it would have been knowing

how they did it but for me that that just that

legendary like Indiana Jones like Treasure finding

secret door passages type stuff that that magical

feel to it It's kind of is what what draws me

to it But you're right it it probably would not

have been as fun to be on it as I had once Imagined

it would have been oh, yeah, but still great

retro game show that you should have at least,

you should at least know what it is and you should

have at least watched a few episodes as a kid

and if you didn't you should go out and at least

watch a few episodes on YouTube just so you know

about it. And then if you're an adult play land

of Legends of the Hidden Tailpole and Double

Darever opens up you know I'm going to be first

in line. Heck yeah man, let's make this happen
