GeekCast Radio
King Cohen Documentary at Music Box Theatre

About this Episode
This is Matt Verbois from La La Land Records
and you've entered the La La Land Lounge on Geekcast
Radio. You're going to be in for some really
radically unique entertainment. Larry started
as a writer, eventually became a director to
protect Larry the writer. Yeah, shut up. We don't
need all this bullshit. Bow. What was that? Larry
Cohen is so much the invisible man. It's entirely
possible to have seen a lot of his work without
knowing you were seeing his work. His movies
have this energy and this attack. Larry Cohen.
It's like the white Martin Luther King from movies.
I don't know what black exploitation means. Every
movie is exploitation. So what? He's a mad man,
but he makes these great little films. There's
a brilliance. There's a childish naughtiness
about him. He would do things that were dangerous.
Larry would not only shoot in the streets of
New York, he would drive cars up on the sidewalk
on the streets of New York. This is New York
City. They just get out of the way when you're
coming. I would go down to an area with 5 ,000
policemen and shoot a movie without permission.
But Larry gave himself permission. Shell cartridges
were raining down into the streets of New York.
People think that there's a terrorist attack.
He goes, get a cameraman and shoot somebody panicking.
And then the next day, there were articles about
it. They went, oh, Larry, you know. What you're
really seeing is somebody who looks deeply at
the present moment. Larry's movie is not necessarily
subtle. They thought from their reflections of
the world around them and the problems in that
world. All the movies I do take you something
which is considered benevolent and turning it
into some kind of monstrosity. What? Every time
I make a movie, they always tell me that's not
the way it's done, but I do it and it works.
He is the true independent filmmaker. His jump
out of the chopper, run and gun. Larry is the
best guerrilla filmmaker in the business. A wild
maverick sense in the tradition of the handmade
picture. He trusts his actors and they trust
him. The greatest dead devil Hollywood has ever
seen. The reality of life is you don't know all
the answers. You don't know why these things
occur. Let's face it. Anybody will put up with
anything if they think a movie is being shot.
Hello and welcome to the La Land Lounge here
on Geekcast Radio Presents. I am of course TFU
and Mike. The last time you would have heard
me, you would have heard Steve Megatron and myself
live in person as he was the best man at my wedding.
I am now married, living in Chicago. The only
thing is... Bad about living in Chicago is it's
in the central time zone. Ugh. Eastern or bust?
Anyway, this is the La Land Lounge. I had the
opportunity to go see the King Cohen documentary
at the Music Box Theater here in Chicago. As
everyone knows, since 2013 I've been doing soundtrack
reviews for La Land Records and Matt Verbois,
who is my contact over there... Reached out to
me and said hey, we're gonna be in your town
Would you like to come see this and cover it
on the podcast and I was like sure? I'm a month
or so late in getting this out The event was
November 4th 2017 I've been busy the last couple
of months folks You know, moving to Chicago,
finding true love, getting married within four
months of meeting each other. But here's the
thing, when it's right, it's right. Why wait?
My wife Karen and I are very happy. Uh, we are
creating and building a life together. It's amazing.
So I've finally gotten the time to take a breath,
sort of relax, and give you guys my opinions
on the King Cohen documentary. But first, here's
some... information about it. The film was directed
by Steve Mitchell, starring J .J. Abrams, Rick
Baker, Eric Boghossian, Eric Roberts. Eric Roberts
was actually at the event, Larry Cohen obviously.
Indie film legend Larry Cohen has directed cult
classics like Black Caesar, It's Alive, Cue the
Winging Serpent, and The Stuff. Hollywood screenwriter
Larry Cohen delivered enjoyable high -concept
matinees like best seller phone booth and cellular
and Those are just the tip of the iceberg fans
will savor every minute of this documentary as
it covers. Mr. Cohen's highly impressive career
and Newcomers will simply dig the classy old
guys attitude So after the film screening, there
was a lifetime achievement award given out to
the director Larry Cohen. Larry Cohen is the
sort of filmmaker who creates movie geeks. Upon
discovering Discover Black Caesar, It's Alive,
and Cue The Winged Serpent or The Stuff, you're
immediately tempted to see all of the director's
other movies. Between his directorial work and
his non -stop screenplays, it is a safe to say
that you've seen and loved a few of Larry Cohen's
movies without even knowing it and this year
he's here to hang out with the audience at sin
apocalypse and watch some movies so at the time
Karen and I were just engaged uh... we got engaged
october fourteenth twenty seventeen we had our
first date actual real date that wasn't dinner
or whatever uh... on november fourth twenty seventeen
when we get when we got to go see king cohen
this documentary about larry cohen i love the
film i think it's awesome the only fit like i've
heard of some of his movies i've heard larry
cohen's name but i haven't seen a lot of his
stuff at least a lot of the stuff that was featured
in the documentary i think the only movie i've
seen of his was phone booth i know that's sad
As someone who has been working with La La Land
Records, La La Land Entertainment for the last
four years or so, as soon as the La La Land logo
pops up before the movie starts, I'm like, yeah,
woohoo, La La Land rocks! Everybody else in the
theater was silent. I gotta show my support somehow,
right? I mean, come on! The Music Box Theater
here in Chicago is a nice little small, very
small venue to watch very specific films. It's
not a 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19 theater multiplex.
It's a place to go watch a movie that feels like
you're back in a drive -in even though it's in
a theater. The place was just gorgeous absolutely
loved it the movie itself was very very interesting
an interesting look I'm hoping I don't know yet
I haven't looked at this information and maybe
I'll take a break here in a moment to see if
I could find it I'm hoping this hits media release
at some point I'm sure it will but I'm not exactly
sure when it will if you've ever seen any of
the Larry Cohen films or anything else the man
has worked on or even wanted to see what the
man is like in person this was the thing to watch
this event here in Chicago was amazing as I said
Larry Cohen was there the director Steve Mitchell
was there Eric Roberts was there and before and
after the show there was after the show that
after the movie finished they did questions kinda
like a James Lipton type of ask you know the
audience asks the guy a question kind of thing
before that they did a little thing where before
the movie started you know they tried to give
little introductions everybody and Larry was
joking around and having a good time everyone
was really having a good time I think that documentaries
need to have more events like this this was a
very very cool thing to go to if It's still running
if it's still on tour or whatever. It's supposed
to be called you guys ought to go see this It's
very very cool All right, here's the deal folks
I have tweeted at King Cohen movie on Twitter
to see if it will be released on media I Highly
doubt it, but I'm hopeful I cannot find any information
on it at all saying that it'll be released on
DVD, iTunes, whatever. Put on Hulu or Netflix
or any of that. My favorite part of the movie
is just seeing how dedicated Larry Cohen is to
the craft. It's men like him who are carving
out and who have carved out his own their own
path Men women whatever people that carve out
their own path That makes me continue to carve
out my own path with the podcasting with my writing
with everything else just seeing this documentary
and seeing what larry cohen's home office looks
like paper everywhere oh my god that's kinda
like how i am with my computer i have document
files everywhere of ideas for podcasts that have
been you know six seven eight nine years in the
making uh... just absolutely fun and interesting
and i finally got to meet met for boys from all
and records that was cool Mean I know you know
some people like mad for boys. Yeah, okay, but
dude But I'm telling you people La Land Records
is the soundtrack company they are La Land Entertainment
is the new hotness in entertainment in Hollywood
in La La Land If you can, check out King Cohen.
It's a very cool documentary about a filmmaker
who blazed his own path and has no regrets about
anything he did in his life, as far as I can
tell, just based on watching the documentary.
Karen enjoyed seeing the film as well, hoping
we can go to more events like this in the future.

you guys next time i'm gonna go see if i can
find a phone booth Because it's alive. Four for
Britney Spears, right? No, you owe me, Stu. It's
gotta be the night of the 18th, and I will deliver
you a truckload of celebrities. But today...
Someone's got his number. Don't even think about
leaving that booth. Wrong number, pal. I'm aiming
at you right now. Can you feel it, Stu? Did you
call me Stu? Who is this? Someone who enjoys
watching you. I have a 30 caliber bolt action
700 with a hands -hold tactical scope. You mean,
like a rifle? At this range, the exit wound out
to be about the size of a small tangerine. You're
bluffing. There's only one way to find out. Oh,
my God. You shot him. Look at all of the people,
Stu. He's the shooter! I've seen him! It wasn't
me! What did I do to deserve this? How am I?
If you have to ask, then you're not ready to
know yet. I didn't shoot anybody. I just want
to hear your side of it. If you tell him, I will
kill you. I ain't got no side of it. You're in
this position because you're not telling the
truth. I'm in this position because you've got
a gun. Come on, Stu. Don't you get the game yet?
Confess your sins, Stuart. Hang up. Stu hasn't
been totally honest with you. His wife looks
very angry. He said he wasn't married. Leave
her out of this! I have your wife here with me.
This is exciting. You get to choose between them.
Kelly, Pam, Bam, Bam. Get her out of here, right?
They're in position. Move, move, move. I give
the orders here. Look, I'm sure we can work this
out. It's do or die time. One. Hold your fire!
Two.
