16th episode of the telecast brought to you by

the Geekcast Radio Network and today we are starting

a brand new block of shows and this time the

theme for this block of shows is going to be

all about game shows from our childhood And to

help me out, once again I have with me Steve

Megatron Phillips. Hello. Hello. And also back

with us again is JT from Saskatoon. Hello, sir.

Good day to you. Good day to you. And today the

three of us are going to be talking about...

It takes a certain kind of something to keep

the heart pumping Something everybody needs to

achieve to succeed You'll need a lot Do you have

it? Do you have it? Alright folks, we are talking

about Guts. And before we get too far into our

discussion, here's a little bit of background

information on the show. It debuted in 1992 on

Nickelodeon and ran four seasons until 1996.

There was 126 episodes, it was a 30 minute show,

and there was actually a couple different spin

-off type attempts at it that we'll get into

a little bit later. And for those of you that

don't remember Guts, it's basically kind of like

a... American Gladiators for kids minus the Gladiators

because it's just kids competing in these quote

-unquote athletic events. So let's just get into

some of our memories on the actual show. Let's

start with JT here. JT, what do you remember

about Guts from back in the 90s? I remember having

a dying passion to participate on the show. As

did we all. Well, it's just a type of kid that

would love to climb in jungle gyms and run around

and have fun like that. Of course, I loved American

Gladiators, so I just love that reference. You

look at some of the things like, yeah, I was

more athletic and almost educational in the activities,

but it's just something. to have fun like that

competing in some pretty fun games. It would

have just been awesome to participate like that.

I lived in pretty much the middle of nowhere,

so pretty much I had a jungle gym and a merry

-go -round, so I had to make do with my imagination.

Yeah. Well, in what game show don't you watch

as a kid that you don't want to be in or want

to be on? I mean, I think that's going to be

probably safe to say for all the ones we talk

about in this block, or at least the majority

of them that we're all probably wanting to be

on on that game show. The appeal for this one

is there was a lot of harnesses with bungee jumping

type things or just flying through the air type

stuff. It was the type of stuff that there was

no way you could do on your own. It wasn't like

they were just doing regular athletic events

that you could mimic in your backyard. Access

to a bungee cord slam dunk with so yeah, you

can't slam dunk on an 11 -foot hoop by jumping

off of a padded wall with a bungee cord attached

to you Steve what do you remember about guts

from from the 90s? Well, I didn't know the that

the host was later on, you know regular TV and

movies but right I I remember watching this show

and wanting to be on it That's what JT was saying

too. It's such a fun competitive and even if

you screw up during the show, they're still coaching

you on to do a good job. Yeah. It's always an

uphill show that they just ... I don't know.

All the activities in it are so diverse, depending

on the episode. Yeah. It was just stuff that

looked like it would be fun to try. Yeah. Especially

like there was that one thing where you're basically

sitting in one of those pedal bike type things

that run over an obstacle course. I saw that

and I was like, that would be so awesome. But

even just the simple jumping on these contraptions

where you're either slamming a basketball or

you're spiking a volleyball or just any of these

things that you're flying through the air. There

was another one that I saw where they were shooting

these like nerf foam type. Darts or but like

a bow and arrow at a target as they were flying

through the air And I mean just all that stuff

looks like it would be fun at least to try once

But I think we're all in agreement. We all wanted

to be on the show at one point Yeah, they had

some really fun games on that Yeah, and since

since Steve mentioned the host I think we can

get into I mean there's not a lot of who's who

as far as guts But there is a couple people that

I'd like to mention and first one obviously is

the host whose name is Michael Malley and we'll

get into a little bit as far as where he is now

later, but as far as just his role on Guts and

his hosting job on this particular show, what

were your guys' opinions? Did you like him? Did

he annoy you? What was he good or bad at as far

as hosting Guts? JT, do you have any thoughts

on Mike O'Malley as the host? I liked Mike, but

he really straddled that fine line between annoying

and guy that you really wanted to hang out with

because you know he had all this energy and he

would like go completely nuts like doing the

play -by -play and such like that because you

know I watched a few episodes on YouTube in preparation

and just I kind of almost forgot how childlike

he could be yeah I always remember even as a

kid not liking him as much as other hosts of

other game shows You know like you know like

some of the ones we'll get to later like maybe

would double dare or even the guy from legends

of the hidden temple like this Michael Malley

to me as a kid was More so on the over -the -top

annoying part rather than the I don't know Like

cool want to hang it wanna want it be on his

show type thing. I don't know He always seemed

more Like when the camera was on and that's when

I liked him, but he's doing the play -by -play

and he just He was stumbling. Yeah, he would

always be stumbling over what he was gonna say

next and then they'd say something stupid and

then he would just like throw it over to his

other person Yeah, I Fucked this up. Take it

away mo Exactly Steve, what are your thoughts

on Michael Maile? Just as a host on the show

granted he was kind of bumbling on the show and

I can't say anything, you know other than that,

but I mean he overall Isn't that bad? No, no,

he's not that bad. It's just you know, I think

JT said it it's kind of like straddling that

line where if he would have gone even more To

that one extreme then it would have been bad.

Yeah No, it's just like I said, it's just when

he's on camera I kind of liked him when he's

doing the play -by -play And he just put too

much into it. He's like, oh my god I'm gonna

overreact Part of it's cool because they're dealing

with a bunch of kids and they're trying to make

it super entertaining, so I get the energy part.

And he has a cool voice for it. Yeah, sometimes

it was a little over the top for me, I guess.

Exactly. And then, of course, I mentioned he

throws it over to his co -host Mo, Maura Quirk.

I kind of actually liked her. Was it the British?

Yeah, she was a Brit. Yeah, so she had the British

accent and whatnot and I thought it was a good

dynamic and I thought they played off of each

other pretty well. What do you think Steve? I

was gonna say she is a kind of a needed dynamic

for it For the show and she does kind of help

put things along I don't know. It kind of breaks

away from Mike O'Malley a little bit and Kind

of bounced him out Yeah, it did help that and

the British voicing to it was a little bit more

interesting than listening to him go, oh my lord,

look at this. So I mean, it was a nice added

feature to the show. Yeah, I thought they interacted

with each other pretty well and they played off

of each other both. Like, you know, he would

do something weird and she would kind of comment

on it or back and forth. Like I said, it's like

whereas Mike is like almost Totally unrepressed,

you know, she's just like she was like the adult

in the situation that you know She just kind

of leveled him off Yeah, and it didn't hurt that

she was kind of hot No, she wasn't bad -looking

either. So that didn't hurt at all So you had

Mike and Moe which is kind of interesting, but

I didn't realize they had these guest stars on

Maybe I wasn't watching it that season, but I

guess one of the seasons they had Dominique Wilkins,

Evander Holyfield, Adam Oates, Charlie Ward,

Pickaboo Street. So they had some real athletes

that came in. I guess they just did a little

bit of like advice type thing to the contestants

or whatnot. Do any of you remember any guests

like this? I don't. I don't personally. Yeah,

so they had some guests, but we're not going

to talk about it really because we don't remember

them ever appearing, but they were there. And

we'll get into a couple interesting contestants

a little bit later on. But I think it's time

for us to go into our next segment, which is...

The Good. The Bad. The Ugly. That's right. It's

time for the good the bad and the ugly of guts

and for me at least There's a little bit of all

of it a little bit of good a little bit of bad

and maybe some ugly Well, let's start with just

the the intro the theme song that they had for

the show What are your impressions on the theme

song JT? I didn't like it Like I don't know what

it was. I think it's just like one of those rare

things from the show that I didn't like okay,

I just It annoyed me. It annoyed you? I like

parts of it, I guess. I like some of the music

when it's like, I kind of like that. But as far

as like overall theme song, I wouldn't like put

it at the top of my list, but everybody knew

as a kid the whole guts, you know, that part.

No, it's just like, I like the music, but it's

for some reason. Steve, what do you think about

the theme? I thought it was pretty catchy. Yeah.

Despite the fact that it could be annoying at

times, it was pretty good to listen to and it

did get you kind of pumped up for the show. Yeah,

that's why I kind of like the music part. Like

I said, it kind of was catchy for me too. It

got me excited for it. I wouldn't want to listen

to it like over and over and over again or anything

like that, but I guess there's not a ton of theme

songs I would like to listen to nonstop. But

I don't know I think it was fitting for the type

of show that it was doing Yeah, I would definitely

see that I could see that it's just I Thought

it was a little for being kids, you know Game

show activity show like that. I thought I was

kind of thought it was maybe just a little stiff

Like it didn't necessarily have the right Energy

for a show like this, but that's probably just

me We'll see if anyone else has thoughts on the

theme song they can leave comments and whatnot

But I don't know I have kind of mixed feelings

about it but I do not have mixed feelings about

another segment that they did which was the spilling

your guts segment where they Gave information

on the kids as far as like how old they were

and what they liked and stuff like that and I

don't know what you guys feel like but that was

a segment I could have done without Now the it

was kind of kind of interesting to hear from

these kids like you see where they come from

Especially so when it was global guts. Yeah kind

of what the show involved into and you get kids

from other countries and You it's always kind

of fun to hear you where people are coming from

and all that I Think I would have liked it better

if they I mean they gave like the age and I don't

know if they gave like Sometimes they gave where

they're from but then it was just like some random

Fact about the kid that yeah seemed kind of stupid

It's like, you know, I'm my chick from Tallahassee

and it's just sometimes when they got to do and

it's like where they talk about where they're

from or what they like to do songs it just Seems

scripted. Well, yeah, and it'd be like this is

so -and -so and they well first of all In the

at least in the early stages Michael Malley would

say, you know It's time for you to spill your

guts, but then he would be the one that actually

said all the information Yeah, so it's like no,

they're not spilling their guts. You're talking

about them And he'd be like, you know, this is

their 13. They're from this and they collect

baseball cards Okay, so does almost every kid

that age like or you know, like they play Basketball

or football in their spare time like give me

something a little bit more unique to this person.

I guess yeah, I Don't know Steve your thoughts

on the whole spilling your guts part I don't

know, it really was not that interesting to be

honest. I would have just preferred that they

just played the games and went through. Yeah,

me too. It's like I don't necessarily need to

know much about these kids. I can understand

JTA with the global one as far as wanting to

know where they're from. And ages are fine, but

they can do that as they talk about the event

or as they introduce the kid to the event. They

don't have to put this whole little segment on.

The other thing about the kids is whenever they

would interview them after an event, he would

ask them questions that there was no way they

were going to answer. They're just kind of designed

to throw them off and they just kind of look

at them like, uh. And then they give some stupid

answer. Yeah. And I'm just like, stop. They're

kids. You can't ask them questions that they're

not going to get when they know they're on camera

and they're nervous already. Yeah, it's good.

So do you think of the current geopolitical?

Kid just is like, you know cricket cricket Yeah,

I mean, I don't know to me anytime they interacted

with the kids the show got awkward. Yeah and

it's not like the interaction that I found weird

it's like the whole Nicknaming thing that they

got like when the kids would come on getting

in the show and it's like, you know Nick the

knife whatever or Vicky the viper and I was like

my God, people, are you putting pressure on them

or what? And then a couple times he would mess

them up because he would have the wrong nickname

for the kid. Yeah. Because obviously they're

assigning the nicknames or maybe the kids got

to pick their own, I don't know, but he'd be

like, uh, so -and -so the clutch or wait a second,

they're the Cobra or I don't know. Yeah. What

did you think about the nicknames and just when

they interviewed the kids after the event, Steve?

I think that maybe where everybody started coming

up with nicknames for everything that they do,

I mean, present company, obviously we do that.

That's true. Podcasting. That's the Internet.

why they did it, you know, so they just kind

of make it seem like, oh yeah, these guys are

cool, look at this, they got a nickname, we even

gave it to them. And if the Gladiators is what

they were trying to be like, I guess all the

American Gladiators had those types of names

too. Yeah, and I could see that, but I mean,

some of it was kind of unnecessary, but I can

see where the appeal was there because you're

like, I want a cool nickname. Yeah. Makes it

seem like it's more something, you know intense

instead of just these regular kids off the street.

They're like these like superhero type kids I

think right off the streets like hey kids you

want to jump in a bungee cord and slam a basketball

I guess I mean I don't think I would have minded

him talking to the kids after the things if it

didn't come across as so awkward to me or the

fact that he didn't down like an entire pot of

coffee before he did because Like when he was

on camera whether he's talking to the audience

or he's talking to the kid it just looked like

this guy was like wired beyond belief and That's

another thing that just kind of took me out of

it if he wills Yeah, it's like he didn't care

Another thing I wanted to kind of talk about

we kind of mentioned in a little bit was some

of the actual events And if there is any that

you remember specifically, I mean we kind of

talked about like slam dunking the basketball

and some stuff like that. Is there any other

event that kind of either you watched on YouTube

recently or just you remember from your childhood

that you wanted to partake in more than any others?

I forget what they call it, but they have like

this obstacle course. where you had to walk across

a tightrope and you'd slide down on the T -bar.

There was a cargo net. Yeah. You had to climb

through the elastic jungle before you got to

the cargo net. You'd climb up the cargo net and

you'd jump down into a giant airbag. I saw another

one where you slid down a slide into a pool at

the end instead of the airbag. Yeah. It was kind

of like the Eliminator in the American Gladiators

where you had a bunch of things back to back.

Yeah. I always thought that would kind of be

cool. And then I forget what you call it, but

there's like one of those sit down bikes that

you have to go over the obstacle course like

the bumps and the potholes and you get to crash

right through a wall and I always thought that

would have been fun. I just always thought to

me the ones that would have been the most fun

were the ones where you were jumping off the

bungee cord and either slamming the basketball

or spiking a volleyball or stuff like that. I

mean there was some stuff that was like in a

pool. They had a bunch of different things in

this big old pool but some of those seemed like

they weren't quite as fun as the others because

they'd either be way too hard or way too easy.

Yeah and then there was one, again I can't remember

what they called it, where you're hung from the

ceiling like 90 degrees to the floor and it's

like you're running along this wall and you jump

over a couple of hurdles and you swing around

the corner. You know best time okay over this

thing, but you're hanging like perpendicular

to the floor nice No, that'd be cool to Steve

any events that you're specifically remember

Not really I mean I I really liked the the rock

climbing type stuff like when they'd have to

you know get up like these mountains of whatever

or just you know where they're up in the air

doing kind of the you know obstacle course on

the high ropes or especially the the race car

type stuff i i like those a lot too yeah um i

staying with some of the events a couple notes

that i jotted down after the the fact here it

kind of bugged me that they would check the scoreboard

after the very first event like yeah i realized

they needed to do that as they went through but

it's not necessary after the very first event

because we know what the score is because they

don't seem like they went in depth after that

first check in and then like, okay, let's see

where the leaderboard is. But that first one,

they're like adding it up and giving like additional

commentary on how the kids performed in that.

It's like, I guess I know that person got first

point or first place. So they're in the lead

right now. Exactly. It's the only event that's

happened so far. I also saw that a lot of times

when the kids struggled at stuff, sometimes it

wasn't their fault. Sometimes it was these weird

ass contraptions that they had come up with for

the events that just weren't working right. Especially

in the ones where they were in the harness doing

the bungee jump type thing, they would jump down

and they wouldn't be able to get back up to where

they started. Like they would have like three

or four spotters trying to help them up because

it wasn't Easy for them to just get back up and

jump again. And sometimes it costs the kids like

almost the entire time Well, yeah, and then there's

like said there's like the the sitting pedal

bike, you know, you flip those over if you took

the turn too sharp or you'd slip off the Tight

rope in the obstacle course and fall like that.

Oh, did you see the video? I posted of the girl

that fell Good thing it was a girl. She was walking

across, for those of you that obviously don't

know what we're talking about, she's walking

across like a ring thing where like there's rings

hanging on ropes and so you can grab the ropes

and put your feet in the rings and walk across

and her foot slips through the ring and it basically

gets her right between the legs. And then she

flips and then like all the way around and falls

to the ground. I'm glad it was a girl. I also

didn't like that when they would do a timing

event that They would show the event and they

would show the kid You know that have a clock

on the screen and they showed the kid finish

and the clock would stop And then it would go

to Mike and then he would go to mo and be like,

what's the official time? Like it was the time

that was on the screen moron. Well, like it was

never not that time It's not like it was ever

like a discrepancy 7 .2 seconds is where the

clock stopped on the TV, and then like a minute

later, what was the time, Mo? Oh, 7 .2, really?

We all know that. I think it was partially the

problem of whoever wrote it and produced it,

because I mean, it's just kind of asinine to

double dip on everything. But I think it was

also maybe them trying to fill a time void. Yeah,

well, as the other contestants were getting ready,

you mean? Yeah. Yeah, I can see that. It just

seemed like come up with something better than

that. looks like they're trying to make this

as much of an athletic event for kids as they

could and It's just trying to make it seem more

real Well, it was also like at the end of the

actual show right before they do the last round

When they did the recap of all the events they'd

already done Yeah, I'm like yes, we saw that

We were watching. It was another thing like Steve

said they were probably just doing while they

were getting people ready or to make sure that

the show took the allotted amount of time or

whatever because they maybe didn't have time

to squeeze in another event. But it just seemed

like there was a lot of stuff that was like,

I don't need to see this part. Like I saw it

when it happened. It was 10 minutes ago. But

the other thing, I have a couple other things.

First of all, what were you guys feelings about

the guys and girls competing against each other.

Like sometimes it was just all three guys or

I don't know if they ever had all three girls,

but a lot of times it was like two guys and a

girl or two girls and a guy. I mean, did that

either bother you or were you fine with it? I

guess at that age, girls are almost more athletic

than guys, maybe. It never really bothered me,

honestly. It's like kids competing. I kind of

liked it when there was at least one girl in

there and she would be kicking the boy's ass.

The girls usually did kick the guy's ass, actually.

Yeah. Because they were a lot faster, more agile.

At that age, it's like girls are already a foot

taller than all the guys. They're mature, so

they can handle the feet better. Yeah. I just

thought it was an interesting dynamic that they

just randomly ... It seemed like there was never

a rhyme or reason as to who was on there. Like

I said, sometimes it was three guys, sometimes

it was two, sometimes it was one. One of the

things that bugged me and why I always wanted

to be on the show though, to me it seemed like

they were getting these kids out of the retarded

end of the athletic kid pool. I'm not trying

to be mean, but some of these kids had no business

doing any of these events. You're like, I could

do this so much better. Is this kid retarded?

I apologize for saying retarded a lot. I know

that's not PC or whatever, but whatever. You're

not even sure how well you do in the competition,

but if it's clearly that they're screwing up,

how hard is it? You're wearing the bungee cord

for some reason. You jump off, you jump up again,

you slam a basketball. And sometimes it's like

they don't even try to jump towards the net they

they when they pop up to like the Apex of their

jump and they're still like three feet away from

the basket. Yeah Well, it's just like even that

obstacle course you're talking about like a couple

things like one when they were going across like

the There's one where they're going across the

rings and instead of stepping in the rings They

were it was like more like a monkey bar type

thing Yeah, and you'd see people like taking

a lot of time and making sure they're stepping

on every single thing. I'm like Forget your feet,

it's monkey bars, just swing with your hands,

like one to the next to the next and you're done.

Exactly. Or like you said, like the elastic jungle

or whatever. I saw a kid get stuck in that thing

for at least like 40 seconds and it's like just

go low, like do an army crawl and you're good

to go. Yeah. The elastic jungle is always afraid

someone is going to get in there and like just

get so caught up that they're like, okay, Mo,

cut the clock. Cut the clock. We have to actually

cut the jungle apart because they're so stuck.

I don't know, it just always seemed like, I guarantee,

and that's just probably me being a cocky SOB

or whatever, but I was always like, I would kick

your ass if I was on this show. No, it's just

some of those things you're watching, it's almost

painful to watch because these people have no

idea what they're doing. Yeah. And I'm not trying

to stereotype every kid that was on the show

because a couple of them really did do well,

and a couple of them you could tell had a brain

and some athletic ability. But it seemed like

for a while they were picking, who got picked

last for kickball yesterday? Because we're going

to have you be on guts. Or who is the one that

never participated in any athletic events in

the playground or doesn't know what monkey bars

are? We want you to be on this show. Let's get

the cool kid. And we'd be remiss if we didn't

talk about the last event, the good old aggro

crag. Where did they get that name from? I don't

know. But basically, for those of you that don't

know, it's like this big rock type mountain thing

that was actually pretty freaking tall. And each

person had a similar path to the top. hit these

like light sensors or activators or whatever

they call them and I think there were seven of

them that you had to activate on your way to

the top and obviously the last one was at the

top and they would throw these like, I don't

know, foamish rock things at you at one point

or you'd have to like do a little rock climbing

or zigzag back and forth and basically that was

the final event and it was worth the most points.

What did you think of the aggro, Craig, Steve?

I loved that part. Yeah. That was like the most

awesome like obstacle course piece ever. Yeah,

that's the one event that for sure you'd want

to participate in at least once yeah, and then

since the First of all they try to make it like

all scary and whatnot like just looking at and

I'm just kind of like Not intimidated. It was

kind of dark. They didn't have a lot of light

on it and you know had like that glowing effect

and You know, stuff would be flying at you. I

always liked it when someone would get almost

towards the top and they had somehow forgot,

like, the first button to push. Yeah, they have

to go back. For me, I always noticed that it

seemed like almost everybody, and I don't just

mean the three kids on that episode. I mean,

almost every show, when they get to the top,

they start wailing on that final button. It's

like, this will get me the game! Like, they hit

it three times. Yeah. You start pounding on it.

I saw one kid that hit the other kid's button.

I was like, that's not yours. You're over on

the right, buddy. Yeah. Especially when they

go up the middle and it's just like hit mine

and it's just like boop boop. Well, the other

thing that I thought was kind of interesting

is without being there, you don't know quite

what it's like because you can't see where the

kids are actually like the surface that they're

walking on or running on. I know at some point

there's a little path for them, but then at other

points they're like climbing stuff. Without actually

doing it, you can't quite tell exactly what goes

into climbing this thing. Yeah. So there's a

mystery. And with the quick cuts back and forth,

all three competitors, like, oh, Jamie's going

up here, and Mike's going up here. But you can't

follow it with any sort of continuity. Yeah.

And it's over in 30 seconds. Oh, it's very quick.

That's the only thing that like it is over almost

before it starts. It's like they're done I'm

like what unless they got hit by some rocks or

forgot an activator or whatever Yeah, but I don't

know I think it was a pretty cool like Steve

said is a pretty awesome Last little obstacle

course event to have on your show and I think

that's what most people liked most about the

show Yeah And then, of course, when you're all

done and the points are added up, there are prizes.

And since it's kind of like this Olympic -type

athletic event, they basically have a medal stand

and they award bronze, silver, and gold Guts

medals to the contestants. And then, of course,

the winner gets a glowing piece of the aggro

crag. That is something that everybody wanted

as a kid. That thing was freaking huge, first

of all. And just so you could say that you were

on the game show and you won and you had that,

every kid wanted that sitting in the corner of

their room. I remember seeing it. I thought it

would be cool to win and get the thing. But I

don't know if I really wanted to have a glowing

piece of plastic that big in my room. Just for

a little while to show off to everybody. Yeah.

You can just imagine going to show and tell or

something the next day, and this is what I got

for climbing over a mountain. Which is essentially,

you know, you beat the Craig. You know, that's

what you get. What were your guys' thoughts about

some of the spin -offs here? Because we had two

different spin -offs. We had Global Guts in 1995,

and then we had My Family's Got Guts. which was

apparently something that just happened a few

years ago in 2008. I did not know that existed.

I knew about global guts, but I never watched

it much. JT, you had mentioned it, so maybe you

have a better memory of what global guts was

like. Yeah, because I never got to watch guts

on a continuous basis growing up, but I did remember

watching guts, and then eventually it was global

guts. So it didn't really change that much for

me except also man that they've got like an international

competition angle going on Yeah, but global guts.

It was basically the same show you just you get

Vasili from Russia and Jose from Mexico and Mike

from America and that's it. My only complaint

about global guts is like where was Canada? We're

active in Canada, then how dare you not include

us? You guys suck. They wanted to go for that

European nauseous. Steve, do you remember either

one of these, the global guts, or apparently

this recent incarnation, my family's got guts?

kind of was flipping channels and found that

my family's got guts. I've never actually watched

it because it didn't look that interesting to

me. I was like, oh, I'll rip off the guts. And

I was like, flip. But yeah, I mean, I didn't

have really any exposure after the regular guts

ended. I think I may have caught a couple of

the global guts, but I don't really remember

for sure. Yeah, I don't remember the global guts

as much. I mean, I remember knowing that it existed

and I knew the premise of it and having the people

from other countries, but I don't remember watching

it much at that point. Yeah. But I don't know.

For me it was just the original and then everything

else. Maybe I just kind of got bored with the

show so I didn't watch any of these spin -offs

and obviously I didn't know the other one existed.

That just came out three years ago. I don't know

if it's still like doing new shows or if it only

lasted a little bit. I'm not 100 % sure. But

apparently there was also a Super Nintendo Guts

game. Did either of you ever play that? I didn't

know it existed. I did not know it existed either.

I knew a game existed for it, but I didn't even

own a Super Nintendo until the 2000s. Yeah. I

imagine it was somewhat like the American Gladiators

game that I remember for, I think it was Super

Nintendo, and it was just not as cool as watching

the game show. No, it's just, I didn't get Super

Nintendo with guts. Wow. Something to look out

for for the all you retro gamer people go go

play Super Nintendo Guts and tell us what it's

like or download the emulator of it. There you

go illegal, but Still who cares I certainly wouldn't

know anything about that So Anything else you

guys had as far as like the regular parts of

the show the events the people the contestants

the way it went Before we we go on to the next

segment It was definitely a 90s program. Yeah,

I mean late 80s early 90s because something like

this Granted they may have tried rebooting it,

but I sincerely don't think it's gonna last as

long as what they think Yeah, I mean, it's just

something it's a 90s fad that kind of died with

the 80s and 90s. So Plus you gotta look at if

you had a show like that now, there is no way

you'd get the The way parents and family is such

now that you would never get parents to sign

up on that because it's like, well, kids are

going to get hurt. It's something like that.

You wouldn't get the permits for it. The insurance

rates would be through the roof. You know there's

going to be some aggro mom and dad out there

who if their little Johnny and Susie don't do

as well as they're going to threaten a lawsuit

to Nickelodeon because it was fixed. It was fixed.

Yeah, you never know. I mean, I always thought

it would be cool to have something like this

tried in more recent years, like some of the

old. I mean, we used to have all kinds of kids

game shows, which we're going to talk about over

the next five episodes of the telecast. And it

just seems like there's a void right now of kids

game shows. I know The Hub obviously now has

their family game night and a couple of things

like that. So maybe they'll do more stuff. But

I think they're maybe not this exact type of

show, but I think there's room for kids game

shows out there right now because there doesn't

seem to be that very many for them to. be excited

about or, you know, what do you do when you go

to Universal Studios these days? I don't know.

Are their game shows free to be on? I don't even

think they have them down there anymore. Well,

that's a shame. My wife said that her family

used to go to Disney every year and they kind

of closed down a lot of those studios. Boo. Yeah.

All right. Well, I guess that does it for the

good, the bad and the ugly of Guts and now it

is time for... Things that make you go hmm That's

right. It's time for things. You didn't know

about guts So here's some of the things that

you might not know about this game show first

of all we haven't talked about any of the specific

contestants, but in 1992 Backstreet Boy AJ Mean

McLean appeared on guts competing against two

girls and he finished second I don't know why

I think that's funny, but He did a win he did

win one event which was the slam dunk event So

if you want to see a younger version of one of

the backstreet boys yes, they actually appeared

on the show guts Now I think he had that I watched

that one on YouTube last night I think he had

the best time through that elastic jungle thing

yeah well I don't know, I'm interested to see

as we go through some of these other game shows

if we can run across any other later on to be

famous contestants. There was a couple other

people that I found listed on the internet, but

I didn't recognize them, but I don't know. I

think it's kind of interesting that one of the

Backstreet Boys was on Guts. Call me crazy. This

one JT kind of alluded at, but following the

show... I never knew this, and this would have

pissed me off as a kid. The winner would have

to give back the glowing piece of the radical

rock that they were presented with. So they didn't

actually get to take it home. Boom. That's false

advertising. Well, yeah, they're probably like,

oh, yeah, take a few pictures. Now give that

back to us. Well, when I read that they had to

give back the rock, the radical rock. 90s for

you. It just reminded me of one episode of Fresh

Prince where Will won this money in some charity

raffle event, and then they're like, well, no,

you give it back. That's just terrible. Yeah,

and he's like, hell no. And he takes the money.

And that would have been my reaction. It's like,

OK, you've got to give the rock back. And I was

like, dad, start the car. And I actually love

this third thing, the children. that competed

in these athletic events, it took place in what

they call the Extreme Arena, which is actually

now the Impact Zone, where TNA total nonstop

action wrestling takes place. Awesome. So anybody

that's a wrestling fan, when you watch TNA, most

of their shows are taped in the exact same place

that Guts was taped. Why don't you just call

it Guts? Yeah. You know, the next time I watch

TNA, the gut steam song's probably going to roll

through my head. You're going to be like, wait

a second, that's where the aggro crag was, right

there. With a bunch of people, that was where

the basketball slam dunk was. It's just like,

wow, I didn't know that. That's actually kind

of cool to think that happened there. And that

the place is still being used just for a completely

different purpose. So we had Backstreet Boys

giving back the rock and TNA reference all in

our Things That You Don't Know About Guts, so

can't get much better than that. As far as where

they are now, we just have the two people, obviously,

Michael Malley and Mo. And like Steve kind of

alluded to in the very first segment, as far

as what he remembers, you should, if you go back

and watch an episode of Guts, you're going to

recognize Michael Malley, most likely. Because

he's been on yes, dear. My name is Earl. He's

currently on Glee and Parenthood So I remember

most from yes, dear. Yeah, I didn't watch that

show a lot, but I recognize him No, I remember

the first time I saw yes, dear and I was like,

yeah, that's a dude from guts Wow, he got fat

and he got bald It's like he lost like three

quarters of the energy that he had on the show.

He doesn't drink a pot of coffee before he's

showing anymore apparently. Exactly. He's just

like laid back and he's just got that sleepy

look on him. But kudos for him from going from,

Guts was one of his first roles. He was on Get

the Picture, also a kids thing, and he was on

one other thing, but those were his first three

things, and then he kind of went on to do all

these obviously sitcom or comedy type shows.

So hats off to him for sticking around in the

business and basically promoting himself from

a kids game show host to an actual sitcom actor,

which I guess is a promotion, maybe. I don't

know. something. And I was interested to find

out that Moe actually went on to be a pretty

busy voice actress, which I wouldn't have ever

guessed based on the show, but she's appeared

as voices on Johnny Bravo, Hey Arnold, The Wild

Thornberry's What's New Scooby -Doo, Codename

Kid Next Door, and My Life as a Teenage Robot.

So she's doing a lot of different voice acting.

And you'll talk about this some other time, but

I mean I just had the hugest crush on mo But

it just it's weird to go from like this like

referee type person on a kids game show To a

voice actor. It seems like an odd Transition

to me. Yeah, you know she got work and that's

cool Yeah, and I liked her voice so I mean it

makes sense thinking of it from that way But

so both of them are still basically in you know

the business in one way shape or form so alright

i think it's time for a quick intermission we

got lots of guts related stuff for a commercial

break as well as some uh... ads and stuff for

some stuff we got going on at the cast radio

Because there is no DVDs for it. It's not available

on Netflix. It's not available on iTunes I wasn't

able to check too many of the other outlets that

we've had suggested to us so far So your one

and only option as far as what I can tell is

YouTube Now we can talk a little bit about YouTube.

I don't know. I only found three specific episodes

on YouTube I Don't know if you guys were able

to find more I found three episodes that were

broken into three parts a piece. One of them

is the Backstreet Boy, AJ McLean one, and then

I found two other random ones. As far as the

regular guts, I didn't search for any global

guts or my family's got guts. There is a few

other like little just short clips like 30 second

or a minute long clips of stuff like that girl

falling or someone crashing on one of those pedal

bike type things. Were you guys able to find

anything more than three episodes? Yeah, I just

found the AJ one. I found one was Mexico, Russia,

US, and assorted clips of wipeouts and best -ofs

and that. There's a fair bit you can find on

YouTube, but it's not a show that you're apt

to find a lot of episodes you're going to want

to watch. But it was still kind of cool to like

go back like that and you'll see this show and

kind of reminisce about like man I And being

how old I am now, you know, just watch that it's

like man. I would totally kick ass Steve do you

agree that it's basically a there's enough to

get a feeling for what the show was like and

to remember everything I mean, there's enough

to get a feel for what the show is like. There's

enough to get a feel for it, feel your nostalgia

need, but to also remind you that even if it

was out on DVD or anything, you probably wouldn't

want to buy it. Yeah. I mean, you can see from

start to finish a couple episodes and get a feel

for it. You can see the host. You can see the

gist of it. Some of them are somewhat clear.

Some of them are a little bit blurry, so the

quality kind of ranges. Don't know like there's

enough on there for you to get your taste or

your nostalgia feel like Steve said I think But

Steve, why don't you start it off since you're

kind of getting into our ratings here. What would

you give this one? Um, I Would have to say that

I Still like the show. I would watch it if it

was on TV Just for the heck of it I probably,

other than this, won't look it up on YouTube

again unless I'm really into seeing some guts.

So I'd probably have to give it probably a 2.

Yeah. Just because it doesn't quite hold up as

well as what I thought it would. Yeah. No, I

agree with you. I'm going to give it a 2 as well.

It actually wasn't one of my favorite game shows

when I was a kid even. I mean, there was other

ones I liked much better than it. So I'm actually

going to say it's like a low two for me because

I didn't love the show when I was a kid. I liked

it. I watched it. But like you, I've seen a couple

of episodes on YouTube. I don't think I need

to see anything any further. I mean, if I was

flipping through TV and they were like doing

some type of retro on something channel and there

was an episode of Guts, I might watch it on TV,

but only if there was nothing else on. So a low

two for me. How about you, JT? I'm right there

with you guys. I'm giving them a solid two. I'd

probably watch it if it was on TV, if there was

a newer version or something, but I'm content

just to think back to the good old days. I watched

it on YouTube here in research, but if it was

on TV now, I'd probably still watch it. Okay,

well, how about any last words on on guts in

general or the beginning of our game show block

here JT? well as far as guts go it like I said,

it's the show that I really loved watching growing

up and I Didn't know they have to give back the

piece of the craig and I think that sucks Yeah,

because if I was on there and I won I It's like,

what do you mean? I have to give the rock back.

Screw you. Let's go. Yeah, I'd be best. Yeah.

Anybody would. OK, first of all, you're on TV.

And you're dancing in front of the camera for

America. And you get the prize. And then they're

like, yeah, you don't actually get to keep the

prize. It was like, screw you guys. So I love

the show, but. Like I said, it just kind of bugs

me that you don't you win the prize. Why don't

you get to keep the prize? Yeah, makes no sense.

I agree with you a hundred percent Steve any

other thoughts last thoughts on guts or you know

what you're looking forward to as far as the

game show block I'm looking forward to some of

the more I don't know arcade ish game shows and

Don't know just some of the video games and some

of the other Kind of one similar to this but

not really they're not really obstacle course

or more so Treasure hunting and all that kind

of stuff So I mean it's a little bit more interesting

and plus there's more learning facts in it Yeah

So I guess I would say that those would be a

better watch than these that I could probably

still sit through today But yeah starting off

with with guts I'd have to say that it's Yeah,

it can only go up. Yeah, definitely some of the

ones coming up. I definitely enjoyed a lot more

than I did guts. Yeah, so if you didn't like

guts or whatever, don't worry. We're going to

get to even some other ones that you almost most

definitely did like. All right, I'd like to thank
