About this Episode

The Remote Control panel kicks off their massive Top 100 Television Shows Countdown, covering entries 100-76. Dan, who orchestrated the project, explains how the list was built from 29 aggregated rankings submitted across 20+ podcasts, resulting in over 600 shows receiving at least one vote. The hosts discuss the methodology behind such a sprawling countdown, the impact of nostalgia and accessibility on rankings, and the challenges of comparing shows across different eras and genres. Featured discussions include The Flintstones' primetime significance, Supernatural, How I Met Your Mother, Knight Rider, Home Improvement, The Golden Girls, and Homeland, with panelists Steve, Mike, Kevin, and Amanda weighing in on placement and cultural impact.

Hey, this is Steve blue and you are listening

to the geek cast radio network You are listening

to the cast radio network Radio Network's Top

100 Television Show Countdown. Unleash the geek

in you. It's time to get things started because

we at the GCRN are ready to kick off the Top

100 Television Show's Countdown. This will be

unlike any of the previous Top 100 Countdowns.

and it will be cross promoted on three of our

podcasts, Geekcast Radio, The Telecast, and Remote

Control. TF2 and Mike here, and before I hand

the reins over to TV Role, Dan, I just want to

say that Geekcast Radio will be making a huge

comeback for the end of 2015 and the rest of

2016. We've got a number of things lined up to

finally get us to 100 podcast episodes and more.

So joining the countdown, we have Steve Megachon.

Hello. Hello. Optimus Solo, hello. I'm here.

Yes, we know. And T .V. Royal Dan, hello. Hey,

how's it going? Wow. Somehow I think Michael

Wilson should be here too, but anyway. Let's

get to the countdown these hands top 100 TV shows

taking away Dan since you essentially are the

which is my mind It's weird that you're the mastermind

behind the top 100 television shows countdown

because you've told me on multiple Occasions

that you just aren't the TV guy at all Well,

that's kind of recently changed as it gets harder

and harder to go to the movie theater. So it

gets easier to watch TV. So it's kind of I along

with many people are kind of making that transition

as TV is getting better and better. And, you

know, movies are just as good. But, you know,

I can watch great quality television, comfort

my own home, just as good as a movie. And, you

know, not have to go out to the theater and pay,

you know, $20. So it's a it's a it's a comfort.

And, you know, they do say we are in the golden

age of TV, which is one of the reasons we are

kind of doing this. This is the third top one

hundred count. And we're doing this time on TV.

We've done top animated TV series. We've done

top animated movies. We're moving out of the

animated world, looking at live action television.

But animated films are included as long as they

are in those those prime time slots. But. This

is one of the most massive countdowns that we've

had so far. To give you an idea of how big it

is exactly, we've had 29 different lists have

been submitted. Over about 20 different podcasts

are taking part in this. And some of the podcasts

that you're familiar with, some of that helped

us out last time, like Pop At Old Podcast, Wits

Movie Reviews, Kevin Dillon, who was a movie

reviewer as well. A lot of classic partners that

we've had, some new ones that some people you've

heard on. podcast here, like the True Bromance

podcast, the Simplistic Reviews podcast, In Session

Film podcast, a host, and we're actually going

to have a page up, hopefully soon, of all the

different people that are partaking in this.

So it's a massive project. It is KeithCastRadio's

Top 100, but in all honesty, we are one piece

of this gigantic puzzle to try to represent TV

as best that we can. So to give you an idea of

just what we're talking about here with 29 lists

the way it works is based everyone that contributes

provides a list. They rank that list. It's pretty

simple. The higher its rank, the more points

it receives. I combine all those lists and we

make our top 100. Within all the combinations

with all those lists, it was kind of crazy just

seeing the variety of TV shows that got nominations.

So much so that we actually had over 600 shows

got at least one vote from someone. So if you

like a TV show, chances are, even if it's not

in the top 100, someone voided on it someplace.

So I'm going to say this knowing what happened

with the last top 100. This might be... This

might be one of the most unique that we've done

so far. You're going to see a lot of differences.

You're going to see a lot of surprises early

on and often, honestly. So I guess I'll throw

it over to you guys. This is the third time you

guys have done a top 100. I've only been part

of two of them. And Kevin, I know this is unique

for you because you're usually on the other end

of this as the list master going down and knowing

the list going in. This is the first time you're

going in not knowing. How does it feel to be

on the other side? I think it's actually kind

of exciting to not know what the results are

going to be because it's going to be the first

time that I'm actually able to react and not

kind of know what's going to happen ahead of

time because before I knew what the what the

lists were going to be so I kind of knew if this

person was going to react or if that person was

going to react so I was kind of already braced

for that but I like the idea of not knowing it

and especially for a list like this when TV series

you're dealing with So many shows that have existed

and so many different routes that people could

have gone so it's not gonna be like I Have a

feeling it's gonna be very much different than

it like take for example when we did our top

100 animated movies Once you get down to the

nitty -gritty you might not have known the order

But you kind of knew which movies were left that

were gonna show up like in the top 10 top 5 type

of thing So it so it became somewhat easy to

figure out what was still left I don't think

that's going to be nearly the case with this.

I have a feeling we could get down to the number

two show and I still could have a question on

what number one was going to be. Possibly. Hopefully

not because hopefully it's shows that I voted

on, but I just have a feeling it's going to be

a lot more unpredictable and hopefully... I don't

know. It's going to be hard to say. I mean, we've

had different biases that have shown up in both

of the other top 100s. It's hard to say if that's

going to show up here, but I'm excited to be

on this side of the fence for once. Yeah, and

that's true. So one thing I was thinking of with

television is, you know, with movies, if you

look at the best movies of all time, it's pretty

shocking or the most notable movies of all time.

It's pretty shocking to say someone says, I've

never seen Star Wars or Godfather. People are

a little bit more taken back by it. It's more

common to see those. But if you look at the best

TV shows it's a there's not much consensus one

list can really vary from the next and I think

it's more common for people not to see a great

tv show because there's much more of a time commitment

some tv shows are harder to find than others

so with that it's it's harder to kind of nail

down exactly what is technically the best tv

show so we'll kind of see how that lays out here

Steve Kevin mentioned biases and we've seen some

of those biases in the past anything you think

might impact the list overall any type of shows

you feel might populate the list more, any genres

you feel might get higher knowing we are a geek

-centric podcast considering what we've seen

with past Top 100s? Well, I mean, I think in

kind of just slightly touching on what you said

before about the palette of selection here, the

animated films and animated TV series are a lot

less filled as television happens to be. So there's

a lot more selection to choose from here. And

like you said, there's things that there's some

whether they survived or got canceled there.

They all existed. So I think we're going to see

a lot of shows like those hidden gem shows that

you that some of us may have ever heard of. And

we're going to hear about some shows, obviously,

like you're going to see Game of Thrones and

those type of shows like your HBO type shows

or AMC shows. You're going to see a lot of those

probably show up. I'm guessing probably going

to see a lot of the superhero shows show up.

To some capacity, not really sure how. They're

going to be spaced out only because, as you said,

like, personal biases and tastes are going to

come into to play into this, but having so many

other contributors to this, I think that it's

going to make it. It's going to be scary for

everybody to figure out what ended where just

because it's just such a big playing field. This

time around compared to the other two. There's

just there's just so much more that that can

happen Definitely definitely and Mike Do you

have anything that you are hoping to see within

this top 100 anything that you're worried about

seeing as we start this countdown? Only because

of the real -life ramifications and because most

people are not like me that can't separate Real

life from television. I'm kind of worried to

see where the Cosby show is gonna land Because

as much as we all love the show, most people

that I know nowadays are like, oh, I'm not denying

that the guy's a monster, but it's just one of

those things where I can still watch that show.

Where certain things could end up coming to play

because of personal action of the person involved

in the show. can damage the show possibly. I

do want to say something else really quick as

far as some housekeeping things with this Top

100. This Top 100, we're doing it a little bit

differently. Previous two, we've had seven and

six episodes. This Top 100, we're only having

five total podcasts, which is interesting because

this first part is going to be the intro and

numbers 100 through 76. So we're going 25 at

a time instead of... 20 at a time like we used

to so that's again that that's gonna make it

kind of interesting to see where The end of each

podcast is gonna land us, you know, because I

think it's gonna end up being a lot more interesting

of a cliffhanger being in 25s to As we go along

because we're gonna be like damn they didn't

make this 25 block Yeah, absolutely all righty

I did wanna bring up one thing, so we did talk

about how TV is a huge scope, because we're talking

about from... TV from its infancy to today. So

we did try to narrow that scope a little bit.

So if you're curious about like, you know, what

about sports programs, news shows, we did try

to eliminate those also shows like game shows,

reality TV, just because they're harder to compare

to general TV. Maybe we'll do like a top 100

game shows at one point, I don't know. But when

you're when you're talking about such a large

amount of a medium that has so much to choose

from, we did try to at least steer people a little

bit. But even with that steering, We've still

got a variety of different picks and I think

it was really great getting such a huge amount

of feedback and getting a lot of Lists because

it did allow for certain tastes to come out.

So we'll see how that goes. I know with the the

top animated T movies podcast it was early Early

on it was dominated by really recent stuff 20

2000 to 2010. Do we think we're gonna see that

again here? I can I can definitely see that happening.

That's what my biggest question is going into

this whole thing now, obviously we have a different

group of contributors in a different pool that

we're choosing from so maybe that changes things

a lot but my question is more so about not necessarily

maybe the 90s and the in the 2000s as More as

it is the modern, you know, like we talked about

a little bit in some of those past countdowns.

Is it more the modern stuff, the stuff that's

still fresh on your minds or the stuff that's

been in, you know, on repeat for the last five

or 10 years, even if it's not brand new shows?

And I wonder if maybe some of those older shows

have been forgotten or will be lost in the shuffle

or or that type of thing. So my only fear is,

will people be more creating their list based

on what's what comes first to their mind and

what's more modern and what's more in the now?

So I don't know. how that will shake out. Yeah,

and luckily we do actually have another special

guest just joining us and with another member

of the Center of Geeks podcast, Amanda, I do

have to thank you for joining us here. And this

is your top 100 debut. So I don't know if you

listened to the top, the previous top 100 podcasts

or not, but I'm curious to hear what your thoughts

are going into. Yeah, popping the top 100 cherry

tonight. So that should be fun. I think that

this was such a super daunting task for me. I

definitely had to enlist the veteran, Kevin,

over here to get my list made last minute here.

I did see Kevin's list. I think I've seen less

complicated like NASA and stuff like that, just

all the points. So it was intense. So I'm sure

he had a steer. I gave her the simplified version

of that and let her kind of go on her own. He

was coaching me through the whole thing. She

didn't want to eliminate shows. I'm like, you

have to get rid of 27 more shows. I'll just combine.

She's like, can I do that with all these different

shows? I'm like, no. So essentially, you were

her Adam Levine. I don't know what that means.

From the voice? From the voice. Duh, dummy. He

still has his hair, though. Otherwise, we would

not be in a relationship anymore. I'm part Adam,

part Blake, I guess. I don't know. Yeah. Wait

a second. You made the image of me being Blake.

What the hell's wrong with you? Come on now.

It's a long time ago. Yeah, it was, wasn't it?

I have no idea what's going on right now, but

who thought the first TV show we talked about

today in the top 100 countdown would be The Voice?

Well, there you go. It's not eligible, folks.

No. I'm going to channel my inner Gwen Stefani

and get this going. All right. Well, without

any further ado, let's get the countdown started.

One hundred. All right. Well, starting the countdown

at number 100, we talked about like the top 100.

animated movies started off in a lot of the 2000s,

2010s. Well, we're actually starting in the good

old 1989 with Show I think that I think Kevin

and Mike and I know it holds a special place

in your all heart and I know Amanda as well because

You were the top rinker with this as number 100

is none other than saved by the bell. This is

a travesty Kind of surprised honestly, it was

on nine lists received a total of 394 points.

So just give you an idea of what that means is

in order to get in the top 100 you needed to

score 394 points and consider one list someone

is ranked at one it would receive 100 so that

lets you know that in order for a show to get

on this it had to get had to be had a lot of

a claim for this one it ranked 9th so it was

on a good number of lists it just was not ranked

very high the highest rink here like I mentioned

was Amanda as she ranked it all the way up at

number 14 so Amanda let's start with you here

are you a little a little sad to see it go already

no I mean, I'm a big fan. I think that it holds

a lot of nostalgia for a lot of people, even

today. And I think that it, I don't know if it

really deserves much more acclaim than they got.

It tried to do its spin -off thing and I don't

think that was successful. So we'll hold the

higher spots for those that can hold out a little

bit better. The college years was awesome, no

matter what anyone says. It lasted a long time.

Sadly new class was the longest part of that

series I know I believe you've you did say by

the bell for the telecast so Considering that

how do you feel about it making the top 100?

Should it make the top 100 should it be higher

or what are your thoughts? I think if I'm ranking

my personal favorite shows, it probably has a

shot of making them top 100 especially if I'm

not narrowing that focus by going for a specific

type of show, primetime or different genres or

that type of thing, I actually didn't rank Safe

by the Bell on my list. I felt like I shouldn't

rank Any of the ones that to me it's I was looking

more I guess as primetime TV shows and I kind

of eliminated a lot of the more afternoon or

Saturday type shows So it was just a personal

thing to help me get down to my 100 that I eliminated

all of those types of shows and I figured that

was also a good way to get some of my bias out

of it because I would have voted for a lot of

these as far as personal favorites, but it did

not make my countdown. That's where I was. I

had a block there. I was like, so I can't just

put all my favorite shows on here. This actually

has to be some shows that are good that I don't

think are good. Who doesn't know the Saved by

the Bell theme song? Who doesn't, you know, understand

the references? It's one of the few shows I want

to own on DVD or Blu -ray or whatever so I can

watch whatever I want. I just couldn't rank it

in the top 100, personally. I want a Zach Morris

cell phone, okay? Don't we all, don't we all?

Steve, so we're at number 100 with Saved by the

Bell. You say you own Saved by the Bell, and

I know in past lists we saw a lot of our childhood

favorites tend to dominate the list. What does

that say to you, do you think, knowing that we're

already seeing a show like Saved by the Bell

within the top 100 at the very 100 spot? I mean,

I'm glad it hit the list, at least, but I kind

of understand where it's at, because as far as

writing, while it was strong for what it was,

and it was kind of a groundbreaker at the time,

compared to other shows that have come since

that, I don't think that it's as acclaimed anymore

as it was. I think it gets more acclaimed in

nostalgia glasses than anything else. Yeah, I

think that makes any sense sometimes you see

that with with those shows though I gotta say

it was it's one of the I think there are some

interesting aspects of it I know like what it

was a Jimmy Fallon who did that that skits of

bringing back the The classic Saturday Night

Live and there's still a lot of love out there

So it could be on nostalgia who knows it's been

a very long time since I saw it Mike I know the

first words out of your mouth was travesty. It

did not take very long for that to happen So

is it travesty for it because it's too high too

low or because it is it came in at 100 I would

expect something to come in at 100 at like Gotham

or you know something horrible to come in at

number 100. I hope nothing horrible makes the

list. Well you never know. Beggars can't be choosers.

Was Saved by the Belt it was a generational thing

it was one of those things one of those shows

that we grew up on it was one of those shows

that I remember watching it after Saturday Morning

Cartoons. When Saved by the Bell started until

when it ended, I remember getting up 6, 7, 8

a .m. every Saturday watching cartoons till 11

30 or noon and then after that Saved by the Bell

was on whether it was reruns or whatever. Did

you ever play outside or is your Saturdays all

TV? Yeah, it's all TV. He doesn't believe in

the outside, come on now. No, the outside world

really, really, really sucks. He burns us, he

burns us precious. Shut up. I thought you were

going to say the outside world rejects you. He's

like the kid on that movie with... For a second

there, I really thought you were going to make

a Bubble Boy reference. I was going to have to

punch you. No, I wasn't going to say Bubble Boy.

It's the one with David Spade and Rob Schneider

and the brother of David Spade in the movies

sits inside a closed room and eats sunscreen.

Black Sheep? No, that's... Anyway, whatever.

This is TV, not movies. Saved by the Bell. I

love the show. I don't think I've seen any episodes

since. We did the telecast episode for the review

of the series. It's just not something, like

I said a second ago, a little while ago, I personally

can watch the college years more than I can watch

the rest of Saved by the Bell. But, you know,

hey, it's that 100, it's kicking things off and

who knows. Alrighty, well, let's get over to

number 99 and let's just say we're about to hit

a milestone already. 99. Yes, that's right. We're

already hitting a milestone. The reason being

we're already seeing someone's number one come

off the board and we're only two shows in and

I gotta say of all the shows that we talked about

today this might be one of my biggest surprises

because it's a show I forgot existed before I

started doing this countdown and that at number

99 we have the adventures of briscoe county jr

someone had it ranked all the way up at number

one it was on only on six lists but that number

one rank really did push it up it only beat save

by the bell by four points so it was quite a

squeeze there what I know it's second for a second

there. I thought you were saying quite a screech

there I'm like, wait a second was quite a speech

there How does a series that was on for one season

make somebody's number one? That's a good question.

It is. Well, yeah, I know it's it's again TV

has a huge variety. So kev I personally am not

well versed in the ventures of briscoe county

jr Any any response of seeing it come on the

list at number 99? I can honestly tell you I've

never seen an episode of it. It was on in 1993,

which I was like 12 and it was only on for like

a year. You were 12 and 93? Shush. So I mean,

it was only on for a year. I mean, I like westerns,

but I don't remember this being something that

anybody was talking about. I mean, it's pretty

unacclaimed. That's how you want to say it. So

this must be a personal favorite of somebody's.

Steve any any reaction to briscoe county jr.

I'm kind of surprised that it's actually beating

saved by the bell Yeah, I mean again the power

i'm surprised that it's i'm surprised that it's

beating 700 other shows That's my point is one

season and it's it's this Wow, I do know actually

doing some research it does have quite the cult

following It was one of those shows that many

felt was canceled far too soon It had that death

slot of being on a Friday at 8 38 o 'clock where

it was well received at the time But certainly

the ratings did not did not show and also had

considering it didn't have that The geek icon

Bruce Campbell who actually said this was his

favorite thing he ever did So it does have his

stamp of approval. So there so there are some

positives of the show Mike, I'm not sure if you,

I know it wasn't on your list, but any thoughts

of seeing Griscode County, Jr.? I used to love

this show. How did I know that? Here's the thing

with this show though, the show was weird for

me because they didn't play in between Waddock,

Texas Ranger and Nash Bridges 90 chance. 93 was

before and Nash Bridges was 96. Oh, my bad. but

i remember this was this was weird for me because

it was like adventures of briscoe county jr then

the x -files so that was back when it was on

was this on the same time as like the young indiana

jones or something like that i remember because

i don't remember that show but i think so risk

adventures of briscoe county jr was a really

weird show because they had like one or two or

that they had a series of the episodes that they

told this story about the whole John Bly character

and everything else and then all of a sudden

they ended that immediately and then went into

some serialized thing it was like the show changed

mid -tempo and after that arc kind of stopped

I kind of lost interest in it I mean don't get

me wrong I love Bruce Campbell in this show this

is the first show first time I was ever introduced

to him as an actor oh what the heck I'll call

you. Five kings. Five aces. It's okay, boys.

Put your guns away. You cheated me fair. We are

gonna get something out of this, though, because

I think this show being on here will spawn...

five years from now, us doing like the top 100

one season shows that didn't make it through

one season. The top 100 one hit wonders. Well,

there actually is a TV guide list of the top

100 or the top 60 shows that were canceled too

soon. But I mean, I didn't want to get your opinion

on this if you have one. I don't know if you

even know the shows existed. But any thoughts

on Briscoe County Junior? I have never even heard

of the show and I think I'm OK with that. Good

to know. Good to know. I mean, you could catch

up on it real quickly. It's probably only 13

episodes or something. I don't know if that's

something I want to commit to. It might last

shorter than this episode. Who knows? We'll see.

All right. All right. So. That's it for number

99 and what that does tell you though is Though

being number one on the list does get you someplace

that you can see that does not get you very far

You need you need to be on a lot of lists You

need to get a lot of people loving your show

in order to make this top 100 Let's get on to

the next of the countdown 98 All right. Well,

so we had a huge surprise already. We're gonna

take a quite a trip though because very different

in genre a little bit more more current actually

the most current show we're getting to so far

and we're going to go into the first show we

see on a cable network show as we get into our

number 98 with it's always sunny in philadelphia

the fx comedy it was on nine lists the highest

it was ranked was 28 so unlike briscoe county

junior it did not get ranked very high one thing

coming into this we talked about being on different

networks, being on cable that would have any

impact on this show, knowing that you're going

to the big thing with these is being able to

have exposure and having people seen it. So I

know I was the only one on the panel currently

that did rate the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

And I got to say, I am definitely really happy

you made the list. I wasn't sure where it would

rank. It's deserving. I think it's actually at

a pretty good spot. I think I had it ranked higher

in my list, but I understand it being ranked

here. It's the type of comedy Let's just say

it, there's nothing it won't do, for sure. What

are you doing? It is two in the morning. I was

sleeping, Dennis. Let's cool it up now, baby.

So let's do some yachts. No, I don't drink. You

know that. I think it makes people look ugly.

I... Maybe I should go to my room. That is not

your room anymore. It is my craft studio. So

kindly stay out of there. Don't forget, dude.

It's all good, dude. She turned it into a craft

studio where she makes terrible sweatshirts out

of cats or puts cats in sweatshirts. And then

I'm like, dude, what the hell did you do? Dennis,

do not talk to me that way. I am your wife. Please

show me some respect in front of your friends.

That was honestly almost canceled after the first

season, but luckily with Danny DeVito coming

on, which is a weird thing to see in the second

season, it really took off, and it's a show that's

not really afraid to offend people in any way,

and I think it really set the stage for what

was to come with FX comedies. Amanda or Kevin,

any thoughts on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia?

Uh, I've seen... I would say a handful of episodes,

but I laughed the whole time and it does go there.

I mean, didn't somebody poop the bed? It wasn't

that a thing. That's the one of the more tame

things that happened. Within the second season,

you see people on welfare in smoking crack. Just

for fun. So that's again, there's there's, you

know, it's if you see shows like Saddle Park,

other though it's around the same vein. But again,

it's I would say it's more than shock comedy

because it's what it does with it. I think especially

the characters are kind of very, very interesting.

Think it's all it's a dumb comedy, but there's

also so many plot twists that you're like what?

It's one of those shows that kind of creates

its own language in a way with the different

things it does and then you have something like

one of its characters just purposely gaining

weight because he just gives you notices that

Most characters and TV shows look better as a

series goes on so he just wants to reverse that

but it has nothing to do with the show He just

does it for the effect of it, but uh Kevin Mike

anything to say on it's always funny It's one

of those shows, there's a handful of comedies

that were out in that time period in the mid

2000s up to where we're at today that I have

nothing against, but for some reason I just haven't

sat down to catch up on. And I like Danny DeVito,

so I think I would like it. I've probably seen

maybe an episode or a couple parts of episodes.

I just hadn't seen enough of it to fully put

it on my list, which But that doesn't always

eliminate shows from being put on my list, but

that in combination with some other things kept

it off of my list. But it's something that I

need to catch up with. I think me and D should

be best buds. I think we hang out with all the

time. It is available in a lot of places. You

can stream it on Hulu. It's available on Netflix.

And I think Amazon Prime as well. So if it's

a show, it's one actually I started, I caught

up a little bit when we were doing this list.

I wanted to watch more of it. So it's a, it's

better as it goes on. And a show that's been

on for at least 10 seasons deserves some credit.

Yeah, considering it was with an FX when it was

in its infancy, I think. That rule depends on

the show, because there's some shows that lasted

10 seasons that could have only lasted five in

actual good quality content. Looking at you,

Smallville, as far as it's always sunny, all

I can think of is, oh my god, that's the friggin'

penguin. What is he doing there? Don't worry,

I warned Amanda about your references. That was

a little bit more common than I was expected.

He is far from the penguin in this. He even looks

shorter than he is when he's the penguin in this.

At least he doesn't have the fins. You don't

know that. Steve, I did have a question for you.

Knowing this is our first show from not a major

network, do you think it has any indication of

what's to come on the list? I'm really sure.

Like, I have this feeling that we're gonna see

a lot more shows with Vane pop up because I have

this feeling that everybody else likes these

kind of shows. I am not one of these people,

but it's not necessarily, it's more so because

I don't get cable. So, and I don't have all,

I don't subscribe to all these things, so what

I watch is on the basic cable channel, so. Lot

of my rankings are from that or from what I have

had cable in the past. I Think that a lot of

these type shows the landfx HBO You know em see

like I said before I think a lot of these are

gonna show up to some capacity Yeah, and like

I said, that's a good point. So because some

with TV unlike movies Accessibility can impact

you know the way a show falls on this list contrary

to popular belief We are not professional movie

critics or TV critics. I know it's hard to believe

I know but because of that Time accesses will

possibly have an impact on what people go for

so keep that in mind Alright, and let's just

say we're kind of getting back to old times as

we get into our next in the countdown 97 Yes,

well, it did not take long for us to enter familiar

ground as with it's only at number 97 and we're

already in and we're already back to the world

of animation with The Flintstones at number 97.

Most notably, as we mentioned, primetime animated

shows are eligible and sometimes people forget

that The Flintstones was not actually a Saturday

morning cartoon show, but it was designed for

adults and designed for primetime. Steve, Mike,

we ended with you last time, so let's start with

you here. We're starting with an animated show

already. You're surprised that we're already

getting back to the world of animation? A little

bit, because I just never remembered the Flintstones

in prime time. I remembered it in Saturday morning

reruns. Do you think it's deserving of a top

100 TV countdown? Oh, it is. I mean, it's essentially

an animated version of The Honeymooners. But,

you know, it's just one of those things where

I felt when we were creating the rules for the

countdown that... the animated show should have

been axed because we've already done that you

know I mean I get its importance I get all that

but this is supposed to be about live action

not animation I disagree with that. I'll strongly

disagree with that. And let's just say, you know,

we'll see why as we as we continue to count down.

Well, Amanda hasn't done any of that. So we're

going to just veto that and say, yes, that fluence

condom should be on there because I said so.

And I can't argue with that. So, Amanda, are

you knowing that you think it belongs? Do you

think it should be higher? Is it in a good spot?

What are your thoughts? I think it's a good spot.

I don't think it's a high enough caliber in the

animation field as like a Simpsons or something

along that lines. I think maybe it could have

been a little higher, but yeah. Sure That's that's

that sounds it sounds right about right Kevin

I know you ranked Flintstones really high when

it came to the animated series countdown But

comparing it to TV is a different piece because

you're you know, you're comparing it to other

comedies rather than other other animated TV

series So it's kind of on the other end of the

list here. Is that Show you that animation maybe

is not respected as much as live -action. What

is that? Do you think that says about the Flintstones?

Well, what number are we on? We're on 90 97 I

rank this 96, so I'm pretty happy with it. But

the main reason why I think it deserves to be

on here is I think people forget three different

things. Number one, they forget that it was a

primetime show. And number two, I think they

forget the impact that it had on animation and

on the ability of a prime of an animated show

to be in primetime and not just be there but

to compete with the top rated shows. This was

a show that was nominated for an Emmy. This was

a show that was in the top 20 rated primetime

TV shows one of its years and it was in the top

32 of its years. So it's not something that was

just some fly in the pan or flash in the pan

type animated show that Made headlines, but nobody

really watched it. I mean, this was a successful

Milestone impact -making animated show and yes

It does have a lot of ties to other live -action

shows like Mike mentioned, but I don't think

that can be discounted I don't I'm not saying

there's a million animated shows that belong

in this but there's definitely a handful and

it's one of them I mean, did you see the movie

that they made? Let's not talk about that. That

might actually hurt. Never mind. The sequel to

that movie was even worse, but John Goodman was

easily the best live -action Fred Flintstone

in 1994. Oh, ever. There's stiff competition

for that. Moving on. Steve, any thoughts on the

Flintstones before we move on to the next one?

Well, it was kind of like when we were... Developing

the idea of this of animation entering into this

I I was like initially against it Because like

Mike had said we had done it. However It's hard

to discount the relevance of this show or the

shows that it's spawned from it Because if we

wouldn't have had the Flintstones, we wouldn't

have had you know, your family guy the Simpsons

I mean because essentially these these like comedy

family kind of things that are going on spawned

from that and So without having that strong foundation

of something to kind of play off of I don't think

that we would have the What we have today and

in the animation world that's in the other primetime

spectrum Definitely definitely and like Kevin

mentioned this was a show that was legit when

it came out so much though It was the first as

Kevin mentioned the first animated show ever

to be nominated for a primetime Emmy not the

daytime any Emmy not like some random Award that

doesn't matter was nominated for best outstanding

comedy series. So it unlocks the loss to another

classic show that the Jack Benny show So again,

it's a highly respected show So I know I too

growing up just assumed it was Saturday morning

cartoon show But when you go back and look at

it, it kind of makes sense that it wasn't so

alrighty Let's move on to the next in the countdown

and let's just say one person in the panel Might

not be too happy with what we have in store 96.

All right things might start getting real as

we saw a number one off the board and we are

about to see a number two come off the board

as at number 96, we have Supernatural. God damn

it! Yes, as you can see, a lot of lovers of Supernatural

on the panel. It was on seven lists. It was highest

ranked as number two, like I mentioned, by none

other than Steve Megatron Phillips. So it's fitting

that we start with you, Steve. Seeing your number

to go off the board. I know how that feels cuz

last last time we did this mine My number two

was off the board at a hundred So at least you

beat my number two from last time but the little

little upset seeing it fall this low already.

Ah Surprisingly, yes. Oh, that's such a pain

because the last two top 100s mine at least made

it to the top five Yeah, this is This is real

rough on me because I've been watching the show,

my wife and I have been watching it since just

before the second season aired. We picked it

up at like a video store and started watching

the blitz through the whole first season and

since have watched it religiously. And for a

show that has gone on this long, I'm surprised

to see it this end of the spectrum. Like I was

expecting maybe like the, you know, the top 50,

but not like the bottom feeder edition of the

top 100. So yeah, this is kind of painful to

watch this fall this early. I've been there.

I've been there. We're going to start our own

little counseling sessions as we talk about our

top shows going down way too early. And Amanda,

I think I heard you also not too happy seeing

this fall already. So a little a little shock

that Supernatural is already coming down the

board. Jensen Ackles is my future ex -husband.

He just doesn't know it yet. This was originally

your number two. This should have been. If we

were doing a personal list, this would have been

my number one show, hands down. It came in at

my number five just because I felt like I had

to put some more high caliber, better accepted

shows on my list higher. But this has to be my

favorite show ever. I've seen the season several

times. All the reruns, as soon as it's on TV,

the new episode, I want to see it. I follow them

all on Twitter, on Facebook, anything and everything.

I've got t -shirts in the closet right now. She's

not lying. And I just cannot. Understand why

it's so low. I don't get it probably because

it's a bunch of dudes that can't appreciate some

sexy men killing ghosts Hey, we hey, we love

the Ghostbusters. I don't know what you're saying

Dan Ackroyd's not sexy come on Maybe not that

Dan Ackroyd now, but then It just keeps getting

bigger, but yeah, I think this is a travesty

so That that's probably the the biggest hit I'm

gonna take this whole show So it's okay up to

this point. We've seen a Western we've seen Comedy

we've seen a kids show we've seen a cartoon and

and now a fantasy TV show Is it seem kind of

odd seeing such a mixture of genres and we've

only a few episodes few shows in so far I don't

know if I would say odd I may be surprised at

those genres being the ones, and there's a few

that we haven't seen represented yet that I would

definitely expect to see very soon. I had this

one ranked number 93, so I'm still happy. I'm

doing good so far. Was there like a fantasy draft

kings or something that we entered this? I don't

know, but nobody entered any fan duel stuff.

I'm just liking my chances so far being the most

accurate list. Do we have a pummel list for people

that rank things? inaccurately yeah i have it

on my list there was only what nine or seven

for this one there's nine nine people rank this

hey i'm one of nine i'm one of nine yeah okay

so you're you're not bad i gave us points yeah

considering that's that's 20 people that you

have them on that pummel list so i gotta you

gotta consider that i'm safe so far no eye poking

for me i'll find them down all righty well we're

gonna return to familiar ground with our next

on the list so 95 Yeah, that's right. Well, we

talked about one FX comedy, and we're going to

go talk about another one. And I'm not sure how

much we're going to have with the panel today,

but I got to say I'm happy to see this on the

list because it is one of my current favorite

shows. We have Louie. Again, another FX show.

It was on nine lists. It was as highest ranked

as 11. An average rank of 41. So no one ranked

it super high except for maybe one person. I

got to say, I am a huge fan of the Louie show.

It's odd. It is a show without structure, in

a way. There's no predictability from episode

to episode, season to season. Different characters,

different actors play different characters. You

never really know what you're gonna get. It is

like Forrest Gump and a box of chocolates in

that way. Very, very happy. All you have to do

is go on YouTube and tell everybody that I did

not steal your material. I never said that you

stole my jokes. You never said it, but you let

other people say it. What let? I can't tell people

what to say. You're full of sh... Dane, look.

You know what? I'm excited that you're in this

room right now, because I've waited four years

to tell you this. Do you know that you're 2006?

2006? Yes, 2006. You don't really say 2006. It's

2006. 2006 is like saying the year 2000 and,

by the way, the number six. 2006 was the greatest

year of my entire life. I had a double platinum

comedy album, first one ever to exist. I had

a massive HBO special. I was on the cover of

Time. Well, you were on the corner, that little

corner thing that wasn't... Not like when the

president is on the cover. 2006. That should

have been like my triumph. And I enjoyed it,

Louie, for maybe two months. Two months before

it started to suck, because everything I read

about me was about how I stole jokes from you,

which I didn't. I kind of think you did. Dude,

why would I steal three jokes from you when I

have hours of material? Why? Why would I do that?

Risk my reputation? Because they were funny jokes,

but it's also just you know really funny coming

from the mind of Louis CK and what's kind of

cool about it for those that don't know is that

Louis did not want to do a TV show and F actually

wanted him to do one so they kind of just said

hey Do whatever you want and that's what he did

and did did it to routing success because it

is on our list It is coming with a pedigree.

It has won multiple golden. It's been nominated

for multiple Golden Globe Awards It's won multiple

Emmys for best writing best directing Lead actor

for louis ck. So it is well regarded one of the

most decorated shows of today I know amanda.

You said you watched it's always sunny. Do you

ever catch louis? Um, i've seen little snippets

and I think that his Because he does he have

like a sarcastic dry kind of like ass. Holy humor

Is that's only actually a good good word good

word to use. I would say he's definitely uh Unfiltered

in a way. I would say and it's like the R rated

version of Seinfeld if you want to put it that

way Yes, I Agree that it's decorated and I think

that gives it some credence I mean it hasn't

been it's only been on for what five seasons

and it already has, you know multiple Awards

to go with it. So it's obviously well done. I

don't get That channel and I've never seen it

so I can't speak for it But I don't think too

many people would have a problem with it showing

up on the countdown Definitely not and I will

say again I no longer have cable but it is I

did try to look at shows that Are currently streaming

some people didn't want to check this out. This

is one that is currently streaming on on Netflix

So if you wanted to check it out I will say it's

first season a little rough around the edges

but it really kind of hit its strides season

2 season 3 and Don't go in expecting the same

type of roles you would you would see for a normal

sitcom because it kind of just does its own thing

it's sometimes it'll just be a random like side

story sometimes it's like a combination of short

stories within a TV show it's it's really cool

on that end like it's just like him trying to

really rewrite the rules of TV so all right well

let's move on to our next show and let's just

say well we're gonna be talking about an icon

and we might see some uh some strong reaction

to where this show falls uh -oh 94 all right

yes i'm talking about an icon so much so we we

had one number one on our list fall and we had

one number two Guess what? We're having another

number one fall and it's our first sketch comedy

TV show of the day And that is none other than

the Carol Burnett show one of the most decorated

shows of its time and We've been kind of in our

current period of time so we're taking some trip

back and I know this is a show that's unique

in the sense that it's a show that I think was

before much of our childhood so I was actually

surprised to see it ranked so well. It was on

seven list and as I mentioned is ranked as high

as number one. An average rank of 40 so for the

most people did not rank it above top 25 top

30 so it's kind of why it's falling here. Mike

any thoughts on seeing the Carol Burnett show

at number 96? It deserves to make the list, but

at the same time, I do not remember any sketches

from this thing. Didn't she have, like, a sweet

wig and she dressed up like an old lady? She

did a lot of things. Kevin, any thoughts on The

Carabinette Show? Yeah, I mean, I guess I should

be happy that it's on the countdown. I would

make the argument that it should be higher. I

think this is what I was talking about in the

introduction where I said I was afraid that maybe

some of the older shows would fall. fall to the

wayside or get lost in the shuffle. So I am glad

it made the countdown. I think it deserves a

little bit more credit. It was on 11 seasons.

Out of those 11 seasons, it was nominated for

awards, 10 of them. It was in the top 30 of the

TV ratings for eight of those 11 seasons and

this was something that really shaped the landscape

of sketch comedy in a way I mean there was a

lot of sketch comedy shows back in that time

period in the early TV days all the way up through

the 60s and 70s heading into like stuff like

Saturday Night Live and etc, but I just think

some of the stuff that she Did was amazing. And

if anybody is a like a night owl, I'm sure you've

seen like the Carol Burnett clips in like some

type of 2am infomercial because they used to

play all the time. But yeah, that's kind of funny

how I remember it too much that such I would

see are the commercials and tell me to buy VHS

tapes all the time. So Yeah, I'm just happy it's

on the list. I guess it was interesting to it

actually had a revival series in the 90s I think

I when I when I caught it cuz my my parents were

a big fan of the show and it came out and it

has a Huge impact. I think that the kind of the

bad thing about a variety show or a sketch could

show like this one It doesn't you don't see it

in reruns a lot So for many of us when it being

before our time It's not something that's gonna

get syndicated not something you're seeing like

a Nick at night or something like that So it's

like it doesn't necessarily have that staying

power. So it may be why you know those That did

experience it really loved it. Like I mentioned

already up to number one number one on one person's

list So those people that were probably you had

the opportunity to see it did enjoy it a great

deal as Kevin mentioned it was huge success of

its time, but I ranked it number 19. So obviously

I'm in support of it. Yeah, sure Steve any thoughts

on the carabine show Well, I did forget that

show I do remember watching clips of it. I guess

I just never associated name with Stuff I've

watched of it and it was normally late night

stuff and in when you're up playing video games

late at night and everything and you had the

TV on for background sound I you know, I've caught

stuff like that and the crazy old lady skit where

you know She's wearing the grandma's wig and

everything. So I mean like I'm familiar with

a lot of the stuff in it. I It's nice to see

an older show With such a following actually

show up in the list Regardless, it was come before

or after it. Yeah, definitely, definitely. So

that's one thing. We're at number 94 right now,

and we're seeing a yin -yang of years. We've

not really stated one period of time for longer.

And, well, next one's going to be kind of interesting.

I think it's going to lead to some fun discussion.

So let's get to it. 93. I'm going to start this

by asking you all a question. Can you actually

tell me? Can you tell me how? Can you tell me

how to get? to Sesame Street because that is

our number 93 show Sesame Street. I was shocked

to see this on the list. It was on eight lists

as high as ranked. It did not get ranked super,

super high. The highest it was ranked was twenty

eight. So no nowhere in the top 10 top 15. But

Mike, let's start with you. You I know you had

some thoughts on the show, like saved by the

bell and where it landed. What do you what did

you think about Sesame Street coming in here?

This is just crazy. It goes to show what we said

in the intro about where shows are gonna fall.

It's just gonna affect us all very differently.

Yeah, Sesame Street was very groundbreaking.

It was probably the first show most of us in

the 80s saw as kids. It was one of those morning

shows where that's where we got our morning lessons

before we actually went off to school. Yeah,

I mean, it's definitely had a huge impact on

our childhood. Kev, I know what you said was

saved by the bell. You kind of didn't include

it because you were mostly focused on more prime

time action shows and prime time shows. So I

know Sesame Street did not make your list, but

how do you feel about it ranking here in the

top 100? I mean, if you hear the term top 100

television shows of all time, it makes sense

to include something like Sesame Street, just

like it. Flintstones, just like Saved by the

Bell for the impact and for kind of the type

of genre they were and being kind of the best

of those genres. And nobody can obviously argue

with its longevity. Again, I left it off my list

because I guess in my focus, I was in order to

try to come down to 100. I was mainly thinking

about primetime television shows. But as far

as, like I said, hearing the phrase top shows

of all time, Sesame Street should be in the conversation.

It certainly makes sense. I mean, it does have

some primetime acclaim. It's actually won six

primetime Emmys for its different primetime specials.

So it has some pedigree there. It's actually

kind of insane because there's actually some

surveys done in the latest S2006 that says 95

% of all American children have watched System

Street at one time or another. So it certainly

has impact. It has won over 159 Emmy awards.

And also, if you took some type of statistic

as to which show has been seen by more people,

in more countries in the world, I would guess

that Sesame Street would be number one on that

list. It sure would rank there. Steve, let's

move over to you. What are your thoughts on seeing

Sesame Street at number 93? It definitely deserves

to be on the list. I mean, it's been around since

the, what, the 60s? And then it's had multiple

iterations across, you know, worldwide. And then

the fact that it's got probably one of the longest

running series ever. And the fact that everybody's,

like you guys have said, everybody's watched

it at some point in their life. Amanda, any thoughts

on Sesame Street? Yeah, I watched Sesame Street

just as much as anybody growing up. I watched

it in preschool. I know all the characters. I

think that it was not... as dynamic as some of

the shows. I think it stayed what it was for

a very long period of time until it kind of made

itself a little bit more modern. Bringing in

Elmo, I thought that was really, really fun.

I like him as a character, not just the Oscar

the Grouch. Burton Ernie and all those guys I

don't think he was a part of the original cast

was he he just brought in a little bit later

No, he was part of the original cast. I remember

him Elmo was not when he first debuted to is

more like a caveman He wasn't like the Elmo we

know and love they kind of switched him around

and to what he is now Yeah, he's more of the

focus of the show now, which is the the I think

the key thing there right Yeah, it's shifted

gears a little bit, but I think that they made

a little bit more PC a little bit more now and

I think they've been able to grow with. Yeah,

and most shows can't reinvent themselves as successfully

as Sesame Street has to become relevant and can

stay relevant. And you got a little some of its

pop culture references it's done, like some references

like Game of Thrones and Mad Men. They're pretty

incredible what it can do. And one thing I would

advise seeing is there's actually a documentary

that came out this year, I Am Big Bird, which

talks about Lewis Carroll and his work as Big

Bird. I think that kind of shows you just how

much impact Sesame Street can have. looking at

one specific character so I too didn't rank my

list and just some behind the scenes I did provide

everyone a master list and this was actually

even included in the master list because I just

didn't even think of it but so it was actually

written in by people so that's how much people

love it they loved it so much it was a write

-in campaign to get it on this list so maybe

if I included it would have been higher I'm not

sure but uh it's cool ground roots people have

spoken I know, I know. It's insane. There was

an online campaign. It was crazy. It's Kickstarter,

I think. All right. Any other thoughts on Sesame

Street before we move on? All righty. Well, this

next one's going to be fun, so I'd just say I

could see some people not looking what we're

going to be having for our number 92 slot. 92.

I talked about Prisco County Junior was maybe

the most surprising show because I never really

heard of it. this show is most surprising because

i didn't think anyone liked it and that is none

other than agents of shield is showing up at

number 92 it was on seven list highest ranked

as number nine a show that i tried to watch it

and could not get through it steve we ended with

you last time let's start with you here thoughts

about agents of shield coming in at number 92

i hit my top 20 but that's it's at the high end

of it but um i would say that The show has actually

kind of gotten to its own now, as sad as it's

taken it three seasons to get there. I have kept

up with it. The first season, like the beginning

of it, it was kind of, you know, playing with

the mystery of Colson. Then you get it to the

end and it's really weak when it's not surrounded

by a movie. However, season two did pick it up

a lot better than season one did. And then after

Age of Ultron, it seems like this series can

actually hold on its own now. It is sad it's

taken it three seasons to do that on its own,

but it has gotten a lot better than what it once

was Mike did you watch agents of shield at all?

I made it through five episodes of season one

I've never gone back to it and I probably won't

until it gets cancelled Do you think it deserves

top 100? No, honestly Just sheer out of season

one out of what I've seen no Amanda, let's go

to you next. Do you think agents of shield is

kind of getting some love because of the Marvel

movies? Do you think without those it would make

this list? Yeah, I think it's totally dragon

on the coattails of the films. Um, I love the

Marvel universe I love all the movies, but this

show I could not get behind I think I only made

it through a few minutes of an episode and I

just was completely disinterested but the more

I hear people you know, getting hooked on this

show, it makes me want to watch it, but I feel

like I'm so far behind now, I'm not sure if I

want to binge and really try to get on board

with this. Kevin, any thoughts on Agents of S

.H .I .E .L .D.? Well, we've never been accused

of having a superhero bias, have we? Once or

twice, once or twice. OK. I mean, this is a product

of being a superhero show, a Geekcast radio network,

as the name of our website. It's also a modern

show, so I guess it's fresh on people's minds.

But for someone to rank this number nine of all

time, that's got to be... I don't know. He's

British, so... That person has not seen a lot

of TV. But I, man, I can't watch this. I'm still

trying to catch up with like more legit superhero

TV shows. So I'm still trying to catch up with

Arrow and Flash and... waiting for more Daredevil

and stuff like that, so I have no time for Agents

of Shield. Do you think it's a sign of more superhero

shows to come? If this is on there and those

other, I would be shocked if we don't see at

least a half dozen more. Alrighty. Any other

thoughts on Agents of Shield before we move on?

I'm interested to see where... Agent Carter comes

into play here, then doesn't she have her own

show? She does, she does. Is she your number

one? Is there any, Dan I gotta ask you a question

before we go any further. Are there any shows

that made the countdown that haven't actually

aired any episodes yet? Well, funny that you

say that No, just not Okay, good. I don't think

that whatever that shit that it was it legends

of tomorrow for Supergirls not on the list or

wonder girl or whatever it is as much as I wanted

to list like heroes reborn and there was Well,

I mean like I still had to see it first and it's

still not done So, I mean it realistically couldn't

be included in legends tomorrow and Supergirl

again same issue And with all the other Netflix

series coming out I will say you know like I

like Steve mentioned I have seen people saw people

say that it does get better as it goes on I personally

I Friday watch it a few times. I cannot get past

the fifth episode in the first I will say the

first 13 episodes are horrid I almost the show

myself at that point and then I made it past

that point And then they started kind of dangling

that carrot you got an actual episode with Sam

Jackson in it for an entire episode helping Coulson,

which helped and then which was on the co -potting

of Captain America 2. And then then you get into

the second season and in the second season, the

beginning of it fell short until you got wrapped

around the close to the eventually and then it

kind of picked up and it stayed that way. So.

In Agent Carter's eight episodes, that was more

interesting to me than the five episodes I've

seen of S .H .I .E .L .D. I did like Agent Carter.

I didn't. I'd be curious if... Sorry to interrupt.

I think it kind of lends itself, though, because

the shorter season, they can tell a tighter -knit

story instead of filling it with filler garbage.

I just think she's more interesting than Colson

at this point. What I'm saying is, because there's

22 episodes of Agents of S .H .I .E .L .D. compared

to the eight episodes of Agent Carter... There's

not as much junk in the in the show. Yeah. Alrighty.

Well, let's move on to the next in our countdown

91 so we were in the world of action Superhero

we were in Sesame Street Well, let's move back

to the world of comedy It's been a while since

we went there with another sitcom a more recent

sitcom that just recently ended and that is At

number 91 we have how I met your mother. It was

on seven lists The highest was ranked at was

actually in the top 10 wasn't was number eight

Was on nine less 433 points only beat agents

of shield by one point Like I said, i'm going

to bring that out a few times. This list is super

super close Uh, let's start with amanda here

any thoughts on how I met your mother not legitimately

but to show Stay away from my mom dan This is

another one where I haven't caught an entire

episode and I think it's one of those that I

didn't see from the beginning and it's a lot

of inside jokes is what I've felt from it and

I think that I need to watch it from the beginning

to get more out of it. I just really couldn't

get on board with it. I mean, MPH, cool, but.

Hey, it did bring his revive his career. So points

for it there. Steve, any thoughts on how I met

your mother? No, I was trying to make a joke

and it came out bad. But no, I mean, I watched

the show, like, on Nessing. I kind of felt that

with the inside joke thing, but at the same time,

I felt that the episodes were kind of almost

standalone -ish, that you didn't necessarily

have to know the jokes that were going on because

they were kind of... create new ones every episode.

And so it kind of lended to itself and you really

didn't have to understand what was going on because

it kind of explained it. I mean, I don't have

a problem with showing up on the show. It did

last quite a few seasons. So I think it does

deserve to be there because it was a funny comedy,

but. Kevin, up to this point we've had three

modern sitcoms show up. We've had Louis, we've

had It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and now

How I Met Your Mother. Do you think we've got

those shows in the correct order? It's hard to

say because I haven't necessarily been a religious

watcher of any of them to really compare them,

but I think when it comes to which show was talked

about the most or which show kind of was more,

not necessarily critically acclaimed, but...

More watched, more talked about, et cetera. I

would think How I Met Your Mother probably is

the highest ranking one out of that. That doesn't

always necessarily mean it's the best show. But

again, a show that was on for nine, 10 seasons

or something like that. So it had some staying

power, which a lot of times is not the case,

especially in the world of sitcoms. You see that

sometimes more with the crime or the action shows

that are able to last that long, but... sitcoms,

it seems like a harder game to sustain for 10

plus seasons. So it has some critical acclaim

behind it. It obviously was talked about a lot

of that in Big Bang Theory quite a bit. So I

ranked it, even though I haven't seen a ton of

episodes because I felt like at least it deserved

a spot somewhere in the countdown. Yeah, I was

along the same lines and it does have some acclaim

like you mentioned it wasn't nominated for 28

Emmy Awards So it's you know, it has been highly

regarded and it was highly rated and I think

when you kind of look at today's Landscape is

kind of strange. You try to say what is the show

of the 2000s because there is huge variety there

usually the one of the shows I think that you

would the most common show you think you would

hear people talk about one was how I met your

mother So I personally wasn't a show I regularly

watch but I could recognize, you know how good

it was and would catch it on syndication here

and there. So it was funny and NPH knew Patrick

Harris. Let's say I do think he was quite funny.

So and I see what Amanda's saying with the inside

joke thing. I do think that you do see that you

where it's a lot of references to itself and

it might be harder to get into it unless you're

in on the ground for Amanda. Quick question.

Any chance we see another NPH show is doesn't

he just have the new Best ever or I guess Okay,

yeah, I definitely Considered the dukes for my

list. So we'll see. All right. Well, he better

be I mean, I think he is one of the biggest I

want to say like a pop culture icon in the TV

world Mean if you have like a child prodigy,

you're gonna call him Doogie Howser no matter

what he he's into his doctor or You know nuclear

physicist or whatever he is. He's gonna be a

little Doogie Howser in my book Alrighty. Well,

I'm gonna put a little bit of a warning before

we get into our next pick. You keep scaring me

with these warnings, Dan I know I'll just say

if you're listening on headphones might want

to turn the volume down a little bit cuz you're

You're about to hear some screaming Alright,

yes, with our next pick, we saw one of our panels

number 2 go down, now we're seeing one of our

panels number 3 go down, because everyone's thinking

about who it could be, who could it be. Well,

at number 90, we have one of the most iconic

cars of all time. And that is Knight Rider as

number 90. It was on seven list, highest ranked

as number three by none other than TFG1 Mike.

Mike, let's start with you here. Obviously coming

in a lot lower than you had it. What are your

thoughts on seeing Knight Rider show up at number

90? I could see the 2008 reboot coming this low,

but come on. If the 2008 show was on our countdown,

I might leave. Well, at this point, yeah, I would

too. But I'm just saying that, I mean, come on,

this You take Knight Rider, Airwolf, and A -Team.

Those were the three, three of the biggest. Might

have one good show. Oh, shut up, MacGyver. You

know, those were the three shows, three action

shows I remember watching as a kid. And Knight

Rider, I did a whole podcast on Knight Rider

alone and reviewed every single episode from

all three incarnations of that franchise. But

I think Evil Kit from Killer Kit would say it

best, I ain't your pal. Well, that's good to

know. I have no idea what that means. But Steve,

any thoughts on Knight Rider showing up at number

90? I don't necessarily have a problem with it.

I mean, I have it in my later half of... I actually

have it at 76. But no problem showing up where

it does. I do see that it's iconic. It does scream

80s cheese. I don't know. It's a fun show with

a talking car that's... That's, you know, helping

solve crime and everything. So, um, dude, you

got to at least give. It's Feeny. I know. Come

on. Come on. I don't much care for his drivers.

This is Feeny before Feeny was Feeny. Come on

now. I don't care. He's Feeny. See, they like

references. That's how they work. That's the

way to go. Amanda, I know. He likes his references.

I just have to capitalize on them. Amanda, any

thoughts? Any? Thoughts on that writer whatsoever.

Oh that I'm way too young And I do remember what

the theme sounded like and what the car looked

like Can I tell you what any of the episodes

were? No, I think that it's it's definitely iconic

So I'm a little shocked that it's so low but

definitely not Top five material in my book.

Yeah, I'm too young. It's probably something

that David Hasselhoff hears way too much nowadays

I'll say this When the show was airing, I was

- Mike, you already had your turn. Shut up. When

it was actually airing from 82 to 86, I was a

bit too young, but I'd caught it in reruns. And

in 1986, when I was six years old, I actually

went to the Boston Budweiser Expo and I got to

stand in front of Kit. I get to sit in Kit and

I actually got my picture taken with Michael

Knight. That was just - So you were at a beer

expo when you were six. His real name's not Michael

Knight, by the way. Shut up. You don't wanna

hear it. The character, you idiots. I know. Well,

I was born in 87 so I should get a pass from

this awful show Yeah, most of you youngsters

get a pass so Kev I'll go to you next. Do you

think Knight Rider is top 100 worthy or is it

one of those situations? I know we've seen it

in the past with when it comes to 80 properties

that maybe quote -unquote You know nostalgia

or novelty glasses that people are wearing when

reviewing this show. I Mean, I like don't get

me wrong. I like Knight Rider our family watched

it off and on. It wasn't something we watched

like religiously or all the time or anything

like that, but it's a decent show. I have a problem

putting any show in the top 100 that stars David

Hasselhoff, but maybe that's just a bias on my

end. Wait, then why was Baywatch Nights number

two on your list? Shhh, Dan. Not supposed to

reveal stuff that's not actually going to show

up in the top 100. Wait, you put Nights as the...

Oh my god, I was going to say you put the original

show fine, but Nights... Alright, I'm gonna be

cursed with that forever now. But no, that did

not make my list either. I considered it in my

initial, you know, selection of shows, but as

soon as I went through the second draft, it was

cut out because there was just too many other

good shows that I had to make room for. So nothing

against Knight Rider. I think if it's in the

90s, that's fine, but it should definitely not

be any higher than that. All right, so we're

we're already out of the 90s going into the 80s.

So let's see what we have next 89 the surprises

continue with our number 89 I think for those

people might want to go to their IMDB get ready

to type in this show's name because I think there's

a slight a good amount of people that don't know

this show ever existed because it's another show

that was only on for a short time and that is

Sports nights coming in at number 89. No, not

Sports Center. No No, not some sort of sports

show, but actually Sports Night. It ran for two

seasons on ABC. The show was on 10 lists. It

was on a great deal of lists, as high as ranked

as number three. I gotta say, I know Briscoe

County Junior is a show I talked about being

a surprise, but this to me was a huge surprise

because it's a show I really enjoyed, but did

not know there was that much love out for Sports

Night. I know a lot of people may not even know

it existed, but... Created by Aaron Sorkin was

his first show before he went to West Wing so

kind of where he cut his teeth Kev, let's start

with you here was sports night a show you have

watched at all and or maybe caught I know it

wasn't syndication on like Comedy Central and

a few other shows for a short bit. I Think when

you just mentioned it was probably the first

time I heard it since whatever commercial I might

have seen in 1998 or 1999 for it. I at least

have heard of Briscoe County. Who is in this?

Jason Molina and there's a legit actors I can't

think of their names, but some actors that are

in good wife now I will say it does have maybe

not like star studded cast But if you watched

any Aaron Serkin show, you're gonna see some

other similar actors Yeah, I just I probably

knew this existed in 1998, but my current self

did not Doesn't this have Felicity Huffman in

it? Yes, it does. Yeah, I remember that. I don't

remember the show Actively I had seen I Would

always catch it at its tail end when they were

going to close the broadcast because wasn't this

essentially The 90s sports like version of what

the newsroom was for HBO. Yeah, it's basically

what it was It was you know, yeah Sports Center

was maybe at its height maybe not the heights

but it was certainly breaking out and it was

kind of the behind the scenes of a News program

and like behind the scenes very much newsrooms

a good comparison. It was like that before sports

Yeah, I saw that. Can I say it? It's chickens.

Well, I think it's also pigeons. Do pigeons roost?

I think they do. I think they perch. They roost.

Look, it's fine with me. Hey, you know what?

I think someone was flirting with me today. I'm

sorry? Someone might have been flirting with

me today. Sally? How did you know? Sally's always

flirting with you. Well, she's not. Yes, she

is. It's okay. I've been flirting back. You're

kind of feeble, aren't you? Well, have I? I really

don't know. I don't want to look foolish. Not

much chance of that. Do I flirt badly? You flirt

fine. Seriously. You flirt fine. Dana. Flirt

with me now. Flirt with you now? Yes. I will.

Start. How you doing? That's good, Casey. How

many years of college? I've got more. I'm just

saying hi. Lay it on me. What's your name? Casey,

I'm saying flirt with me. I'm not playing somebody

else. You're not helping. Start again. Flirt

with me. I'm starting now. What's your name?

My name's Dana. You unbelievable moron. You've

known me for 15 years. Flirt with me. Tell me

why you like me better than Sally. I do like

you better than Sally. Tell me why. I don't understand.

I don't think you're ever going to have sex again.

I gotta go. You're smoky. I'm sorry? The difference

between you and Sally, you're smoky. I'm smoky?

You're smoky. You're a lot of other things too,

but you're smoky. I don't know what that means,

but I like the sound of it. Tell me what it means.

That's hard to translate. Try. You'll make a

joke. We're flirting. It's okay. Are we really

flirting, or are you just pretending to be you

flirting with me actually being me? You think

I'm smoky? Classy, impressive, sexy. Was sexy

going too far? It was fine. You're smoky. Thank

you. Natalie, wait up. I'm sorry. I got to talk

to Natalie. That's fine. We're on the air in

very soon and Natalie's there. Okay. So, I'll

see you later. Yeah, just a little bit in fact.

Because we're going on the air. And you're okay

with birds roosting? I'm okay with birds doing

anything you tell them to do. I'm really surprised

it is this high, honestly. I'm surprised we've

seen multiple shows now, well, multiple meaning

two, that were on for such a short amount of

time and did not really have much as far as notoriety

at the time or since for maybe forgotten type

of shows and it's interesting to see that ten

people put this on their list. It did get some

acclaim when it was out. It was nominated for

best performance in it in for a Golden Globe

It did rank in TV guide actually talked about

it getting canceled too soon It it ranks number

10 in the 2000 list made by TV guide for shows

canceled too soon So there is I think it's a

show that I got more love when it became one

of the shows that Comedy Central showed when

it expanded and it was on all the time. That's

when I started watching it. The first season

is almost unwatchable, though, because it has

a laugh track, but it's not like a three -sam,

it's three -camera sitcom, so it feels very artificial,

but it's still a really good show. And if you're

a fan of Aaron Sorkin's writing, I think you

really see it here. And it's actually a question.

I know with... Animated movies we saw it dominated

by Disney Pixar those types of names and you

see that a lot too with actors or directors You

get dominant lists at times someone like Aaron

Sorkin or other TV creators have do you think

there's any chance there are other Names like

that that tend to dominate a list like this knowing

that sometimes you know Just being attached or

having a certain name attached and get it get

people to rank it higher. Maybe then they should

I don't know if it would necessarily get it to

be ranked higher, but I think names being attached

at times have led to more of the series getting

greenlit or more of the series being... on for

multiple seasons that type of stuff i mean there's

been definitely some names along the way that

i remember like back in the what was the early

2000s if david e kelly's name was attached to

something it seemed like it got a lot of praise

so i mean i think names can have more of effect

of the shows either seeing the light of day or

getting some critical acclaim at the time that

they were out i don't know how much it would

affect somebody ranking it though Think it might

have helped people go back and always like, you

know You do it like a direct perspective when

you go back and you watch all their movies Sometimes

you might see that with a TV show knowing it

has you know This is where you know Aaron Torkin

did things before this he had you know few good

men and and things like that But this was kind

of the show that he did before West Wing So it

I think if he didn't do that It could have actually

maybe even be a little higher on the list and

I don't know I couldn't find this if it was available

streaming any place I don't know how well it

holds up. But any other thoughts? on Sports Night

before we move on to the next on the list. Alrighty,

well, this is going to be a drastic change as

we go into what's next, so let's see how it goes.

One thing that's interesting about number 88

is the fact that it actually tied with sports

tonight, but it beat it out based upon number

a list in average rank. And I think it's probably

I talked about sports tonight to show not many

people heard of. I don't think you can find many

people who have not heard of this show or at

least watched it here and there, even if it was

just their kid. And coming in at number 88, it

is the Andy Griffiths show. We're going we're

going back to classic comedy classic sitcom.

Let's start with Steve Let's start with you here

any thoughts on seeing the Andy Griffith show

showing up at number 88 I know that it's it's

a very iconic show. I seen bits and pieces of

it It's definitely not from our time But it's

like the starting point for a lot of people that

you'll end up following so on I'm not real well

versed in it but I do know that it does deserve

a place on on here because of Just the sheer

syndication numbers. This show should have been

in the top 50 at least. I agree with Mike on

this. I mean, this is the Andy friggin Griffith

show, people. This is Barney Fife for crap's

sake. What's wrong with you people? What are

we doing, Andy? I mean, how can you not love

Don Knotts as Barney Fife? I mean, essentially...

Andy and Barney were the Batman and Robin of

this show. They really were. They were the Adam

West and Burt Ward to this show because it was

so awesome. Then you have Ron Howard as little

Opie Taylor. This is one of those shows that,

like The Cosby Show, like Family Matters, like

some of the other comedies and family show type

shows, this is a show that taught you lessons.

Opie's got growing up. He's he's learning the

same and even even Barney even Andy had to teach

Barney a few lessons or two But I mean having

it this low is again We're gonna be using this

word a lot in this countdown folks. This is a

travesty having it at 88 Kevin. Do you agree

with that sentiment? I don't know if I'd go so

far to say travesty because I think it's more

of a sign of like I said, maybe some older stuff

Not resonating as much with today's audiences

or today's you know, when people are comparing

it to the number of shows that have become available

since then, my argument would be this. I would

argue that it should be on the other side of

the 50 mark. I had it ranked at number 37. This

is my main argument for the Andy Griffiths show,

though. And it's not just, you know, classic

syndrome or nostalgia or anything like that.

A lot of shows, it takes a few seasons before

they get, you know, before they gain steam and

really start clicking. Or if they're instant

successes, they often kind of peter out as you

get towards their final two three seasons or

something like that this was a show that was

successful from episode one until the last episode

it was on for eight seasons and in eight of those

eight seasons it was top 10 rated show in the

country, including one year where it was the

number one rated show overall for the whole year.

So to be in the top 10 rated show every single

season of its existence to me says something.

And I just think it probably deserves to be a

tiny bit higher, but I'm happy that it is on

the show on the list. I'll say this. It's the

only show as a kid that I learned to whistle

the theme song. Well, there you go. Amanda, I

know the show was before your time. Luckily,

it was before all of our times. Any thoughts

on any Griffith? I actually did catch quite a

bit of this in the rerun form, obviously. And

I think you guys have touched on all the main

parts. I think it was really iconic. And it was

definitely one of those lesson driven TV shows

that I think it was reminiscent of, you know,

like The Waltons and things like that. And it

had a feel good. feeling even if you didn't um

i guess it gave me the feels i mean it wasn't

always a happy ending i would say either i think

there were some hard lessons taught and uh i

think that uh little ron howard was super cute

little opi and i think that like you said everybody

knows that whistle theme song so i mean i think

it should have been definitely in the top 50

Yeah, I can I agree I think it should be higher

I am a little surprised I think it too it comes

back to What we mentioned it's just experience

watching the show. Maybe people forgot about

it didn't see it I do have a difficulty watching

some old shows. I can usually watch old sitcoms

Okay, and the Annie Griffith shows I think one

of them when I think classic TV There are a few

shows that come to my mind and Annie Griffith

certainly one of them It's just it has that you

know homestyle feeling to it. It feels good.

You know Aunt B. Who doesn't love Aunt B, right?

Yeah, so all right. Well with number 87 we're

going into a territory that's A few have gone

before maybe I don't know. I think I got that

quote wrong. We'll see as we get into next on

the countdown. 87. Alrighty, at number 87 we

have Star Trek Deep Space Nine. There's five

of them. I mean, I know. I know. You got to give

that space just for people to guess which one

it could be. Yes, Star Trek Deep Space Nine had

438 points. It was only on six lists. So it was

not on many lists, but it was ranked really high

as the highest number 10 on one list. And I guess

we should probably start with the guy who has

a Star Trek podcast. Steve, thoughts on Star

Trek Deep Space Nine. Is this Star Trek deserving

a top 100? Yes, actually. This is one of those

Star Trek shows that actually took me a long

time to appreciate, because growing up I had

no appreciation for the show whatsoever. It wasn't

until I started the Star Trek podcast and Dodd

challenged me to return to it as an adult, and

it covers a lot of different themes in it that

aren't necessarily covered on any of the other

tracks. You get kind of the random, hokey stuff

in the original track, but in this one you get...

less of the diplomatic and more of the the war

territory and and how these people have to survive

during war time and it's it's almost constantly

going on during this entire thing because it's

constantly struggles and and border battles and

then it's just a all -out war by the end of it

but the way they handle these characters the

evolution that they they kind of play throughout

the series i almost feel is more than what we

get in some of the other Trek series as far as

character development I mean, it happens in some

of the other ones, but I think that it happens

a little bit more here because there's a lot

of changing of everything. I know you're another

Star Trek fan. Does this rank high for you in

the many Star Trek series? It was towards the

end of my first kind of wave, I guess, of interest

in Star Trek. I was die -hard Star Trek fan before

it and definitely watched the first probably

two to three seasons the first half of the show

and then for some reason or another I kind of

lost interest or got distracted by other things

I don't know I was in high school at that time

so whatever reason I stopped watching it but

I think it was a good show I think there was

some interesting characters involved I would

I haven't seen enough of a couple of the other

series to tell you where I would rank it but

my personal top 100 there was only so many Spots

I could put Star Trek in so it did not get ranked

on my list But it's interesting to see it make

it I makes me wonder how many Star Trek shows

will make the entire list Amanda let me throw

that question to you any thoughts on how many

Star Trek shows we're gonna see on this list

I'm not really sure This one being, I think,

maybe one of the least known for me, I think

it's reasonable to see it come in at this rank.

Maybe there is going to be a couple more higher

up, I think, without a doubt. But if it's not

Kirk or Picard, I'm not really sure what's going

on with it. Mike, any thoughts on Star Trek Deep

Space Nine? I remember catching episodes of this

show here and there when it was airing. I remember

Captain Cisco and all that stuff and I don't

know, it's just one of those shows that I saw

when it was on but I never really paid attention

to it because I was still more into the reruns

of Next Generation. But it's actually a show

that I'm actually going to be watching all seven

seasons of here soon because I have to... write

a review for the Allland Records limited edition

scores. So I'm actually going to be going back

and revisiting this show for the first time in

a long time. That's going to take a while. Seven

seasons on Netflix, yep. Yeah, I did that on

Netflix when I got it. I will say that one of

the significance of this show too is it's the

first sequel from The Next Generation and it

takes place in the same universe and same timeline

as The Next Generation. This show grows its legs

out of best of both worlds on TNG, so. It does

have some award acclaim. It did win four Primetime

Emmys, both for hairstyle and makeup. But still,

you know, those are important. You got to look

good. You got to look good. Got to make your

Klingons and Romulans look legit. I know. I know.

All right. All right. Any other thoughts on Star

Trek before we go on to our next on the countdown?

I hope we only I'm not. I'm a huge Star Trek

fan, but I would be I don't know. Are we going

to see two more? Because if we see more than

two more, I'm going to be shocked. Well, we'll

have to see. We'll have to see. All right. Let's

go on to our next on our list. 86. All right.

Well, for our next on a list, I'm actually going

to. Start with a request and that request is

just to give the facts because in number 86 We

have the TV cop drama dragnet It was on nine

lists received four hundred and forty three points

as highest ranked as number 12 on one person's

list Mike we ended with you last time. Let's

start with you here thoughts on dragnet coming

in at number 86 The most memorable thing about

this show was Joe Friday's narration and how

they set the show up. I just absolutely love

that. I just thought that was so cool where it's

I think that's where cops kind of got their I

don't mean the TV show I mean the animated show

kind of got their narration from was Dragnet.

Honestly, Dragnet, it's something I haven't seen

in a long time. You know you have certain aspects

of TV shows that you remember more than others

and the opening narration and and how he narrated

the story Throughout each episode is the one

thing I remember most about dragnet Amanda questions

for you. This is a first cop drama first cop

show We're seeing cop shows are usually pretty

well well known within TV that kind of go hand

-in -hand Surprised it took this long to get

to one a little bit. I think there's so much

crime cop dramas, especially out there, especially

over the years that I'm a tad surprised, but

I think with what we've seen thus far, a couple

of those that are a little out of the blue maybe

could have been replaced by some of these cop

dramas. Yeah, I could see that. Kevin, any thoughts

on Dragonet? Yeah, I mean, Dragnet's classic.

It's hard to hate on Dragnet too much. It was

also something that was definitely popular when

it was on. It aired for eight seasons and for

those seasons, it was top 10 rated show. So,

I mean, it was something that was successful

at the time. Definitely people were watching

it, talking about it, et cetera. In my head,

for some reason now, it's Confused, Dragnet,

and Get Smart. I know they're not the same show.

Really? You missed it by that much? For some

reason in my head, they're like combined as the

same show. I like Dragnet. I think it's good

to have some more classic stuff show up, so I

have no problem with it. Steve, any thoughts

on Dragnet? Most of what I know from it is the

parody of it, which was the film, which was supposed

to actually take place after decades after the

original. Yeah, I mean, Dragnet is certainly

iconic. What's kind of interesting doing research

is you hear, you know, just the facts, man, is

one of those famous misquotes is not... Actually

what what Joe Friday says it says all we want

are the facts ma 'am. Not just the facts So it's

like Luke. I am your father It's you know, one

of those things that kind of gets misinterpreted

in and miss said all the time And it does it

was a huge show for its time and like Kevin mentioned

it did win five primetime Emmys for which is

this is award I wish they would bring back best

mystery and intrigue series. I mean, come on

now if you're winning best intrigue series, that's

that's impressive We need to bring that award

back. I need to be a movie Oscar for that, too

Yeah, and yeah and speaking of movie suite there

were three film versions of the dragon that there

were some revival series as well Like they came

back to show that that would not die. It was

a formula They tried repeating it, but it really

was best done best the first time I've actually

could see an argument for it going higher Its

impact within the the cop genre per se and I

think it's better than most of those shows around

the same time So but I'm glad like we said we're

seeing some old shows being represented already.

So Alright, any other thoughts on Dragnet before

we move on? Yeah, thankfully the quote, it might

have been, you know, changed or misquoted or

whatever else, but there's at least one classic

show that you can never misquote. Excuse me,

sir, just one more thing. And let's go to one

more thing as we go into the next in the countdown.

At number 85, we are going back to the world

of comedy and another comedy classic in the show.

I'm actually I'm happy it's on the list a little

sad. It's not higher, but I'll live with it at

number 85 We have the Bob Newhart show with four

hundred and forty nine points on eight lists

was actually on fewer lists than Dragnet but

it was ranked higher because it had an average

rank of forty four point nine where Dragnet had

it fifty one meaning that people who did rank

it tend to rank it higher the Bob Newhart show

Kevin, we're talking about classic comedies and

where they're ranking. You think this is another

sign of a show that should be higher or are you

happy where it's falling? I think it's good.

I don't know if maybe some of it, I mean there

was other shows that he was in. And I don't know

if maybe there was a new heart. That's the thing.

That's the problem. There's a new heart show.

There's a Bob Newhart show. Sometimes it's we

got votes for all of them. I'm not I can't say

if any of them else ranked on the list, but that

is that is a common confusion because when you

put your name in the title for every show you're

in. Right. So my question is, did that hurt this

show overall? Did maybe some people only vote

for one of them or, you know, if they had been

a combined entry, I guess, would they have gotten

more votes? So I don't know. I could see it being

a little bit higher. just because of the presence

Newhart had in television, especially, you know,

throughout the 70s and 80s, so I could see that

argument. I personally am fine with where it's

at, but I'm like you, I could see it being a

little bit higher just for his presence. Steve,

any thoughts on the Bob Newhart show? No, not

really. I mean, I've heard of it, but most of

my exposure to the guy has been in film or in

the Big Bang Theory, so... I remember the Newhart

show. I don't remember the like the Newhart show

was was the one that I always watched Yeah, that

is I could see what you're saying Mike with the

Bob Newhart show in the Newhart show I It's really

splitting hairs for me I think I've always enjoyed

the Bob Newhart show a little bit more but either

have Bob Newhart who I think is like the nicest

dude ever created and I really personally love

his style of comedy very subtle it I don't know

he would say things and say hilarious things

without ever like Making it obvious. How was

the rest of your day? Oh, it was great. I gave

my first IQ test today. Well, how'd they come

out? I don't know. I haven't graded them yet.

How did the one come out you gave last night,

you know, to me? Oh, fine. How fine? Well, you're

so interested. I thought you didn't believe in

IQ tests. Well, Emily, if I can give up three

hours of my life to take an IQ test, you can

give up three seconds of your life to answer

it for me. What was the score? I don't think

people should know their IQs. Well, you know

your IQ. Well, that's different. I have to know

mine. Well, I have to know mine. What was it?

129. 129. That's good, isn't it? Oh, that's very

good, Bob. That's almost gifted. Almost gifted.

What's yours? Oh, it's not important. I know

it's not important, but what is it? I'm embarrassed.

Honey, don't be embarrassed. I had four more

years of college than you had. Bobby, it's 151.

His comedy still works today when you don't see

that with many classic comedies I think it is

you can watch the show unlike a lot of sitcoms

and still laugh at most of the jokes the same

way They're meant to be left at at the time.

So I think it's a good spot 85 I think you know,

you possibly higher I don't know but again like

like Kevin mentioned it could be in with Mike

as well combination of having similar shows get

an impact, you know, we're short land so I don't

think we're going to have that problem done with

Next on the list because I'm pretty sure everyone

on the panel has at least watched it once. At

number 84, we are having one of the biggest shows

of the 1990s as we are going to no other than

Tool... time itself, Home Improvement coming

in at number 84 with 450 votes. It was on nine

lists as highest ranked as number two. Amanda,

I'm hoping this is one show that was not before

your time. Any thoughts on Home Improvement?

Oh no, yes. I wish that I could make the Tim

The Toolman growl noise right now or whatever

it is. Something like that, yeah. I watched a

lot of this when I was younger. I think that

I had a huge crush on JTT back in the day, Jonathan

Taylor Thomas. I liked seeing the kids grow up.

I loved the relationship the mom and the dad

had. I even loved that he had this completely

separate life. aspect. I think he had his TV

show, but then he also came home and kind of

shed that popularity and that fame and was just

a real dad, you know, with a hobby car in the

garage and, you know, his wife trying to get

through school and kids to manage. And I thought

it was a really fun show. And Wilson, was that

the neighbor's name? I think he was probably

my favorite character. Mike, any thoughts on

Home Improvement? Home Improvement was amazing

at the time. You know, as Amanda was saying,

you have so many different aspects of the show.

You have him on his TV show. You have him with

his family. And then the third aspect is you

have his friendship with Al Borland, played by

Richard, Richard Karn. And that's just one of

the craziest TV friendships I think I've ever

seen between the two of them. It's such a love

-hate. It's so awesome, and I'm going to reference

the current show Tim is on. It's so awesome when

they had the characters from Home Improvement

come back to be on Last Man Standing, the episode

where Patricia came back and they made all the

jokes about Home Improvement. That was just awesome.

But Home Improvement itself, as Amanda said,

watching the kids grow up, watching Tim eventually

evolve into this really cool TV dad of the 90s.

a damn good show. Yeah. And Kev, I know when

you talked about Andy Griffith's show, you talked

about a show that started off strong and ended

strong. And we see that too with Hope Improvement.

It started ratings wise. It debuted in the top

10 and stayed in the top 10 for all eight of

its seasons. So similar to that show, do you

feel that Home Improvement should be higher on

this list? I'm going to be the one person that

probably gets some hate on this one. I think

that is the one argument for it is how popular

was when it was out, how high it was rated from

the very get -go, and what kind of pivotal role

it played in the ABC lineup at that time. I think

it was ABC. Was that the TGIF? It wasn't a TGIF,

but it was on ABC. Right. Well, you know, it

was around a time where they were making a push

with a bunch of shows that were somewhat similar.

So I think it was popular, I think it had an

impact and things like that. For me personally

though, and maybe it's a factor that I was a

little older at that time, but I just feel with

Home Improvement and I could name a couple other

sitcoms in the 90s, to me they just didn't do

anything. that I hadn't seen before. There was

nothing groundbreaking in those shows compared

to some of the same sitcoms I had seen in previous

years or previous decades. So for me, I actually

left it off of my list completely. It just didn't

have enough going for it to bump some of these

other shows off my list. I think it's warranted

because of the ratings, because of how popular

it was, and because of how much love there is

for it. I'm glad that it's not any higher, though.

I'm surprised it's not higher. i'm surprised

it's not higher but i'm glad it's not higher

but i can definitely see why people would make

an argument that it should be somewhere in the

top 100 but i know i'm going to be in the minority

there i ranked ranked it in the top 40 but like

i i find it more entertaining than a lot of the

other shows that have come since like everybody

loves raymond or that that kind of show like

i i will give you that there is nothing unique

about it It is nice. The dynamics that's good

in it. The actors are good in it. The writing

is good. So I can see why it's in the top 100.

I'm just glad that it made the list, at least.

For me, this show is more important to me than

a lot of the other ones that are in the same

vein that have come out around it or after it.

So that's why I ranked it where I did. Right.

And I think that's valid. I think for certain

people, certain shows are going to hit more of

a soft spot or they're going to resonate more

depending on That type of thing. So I think that's

super natural. I think that's a legit argument.

You cannot compare supernatural to home improvement.

Oh, I can do whatever I want. It's a different

vein, but I do agree spiritual should be a lot

higher. So I don't think you can argue against

someone when they say, you know, if you're looking

at like, let's say all the sitcoms of that vein,

whichever one strikes more of a chord with you,

that's the one that you should rank. So I don't

have a problem with that. I was just for me personally,

it's not the one that resonated as much for me.

Yeah, and I could see that. I think it's hard

for me when you mention groundbreaking or not

doing something other shows done before. It's

hard for me to say because when I saw it, it

was like one of the first shows of that nature

I got into. So it is, you know, a show I grew

up really liking and I still, there are not many

shows of that time period I can watch and still

laugh at. Home Improvement is one of them. Like

I watched something like Full House, for example.

I loved that show as a kid. Watching it now,

I cringe a lot. Yep. Yep. A show on Whoop improvement,

I think it's still funny. I think Tim Allen,

he did incorporate a lot of his standup into

that show, which is the common thing to do. You

see that with a lot of standups. It was a thing

at the time. Same thing in college we did. So

it did follow that formula, but I don't know.

I think there was something just, I think maybe

who it was speaking to, the fact that it was

a show within a show and not that that hadn't

been done before, but I think it all kind of

just comes around to just maybe the chemistry

of the cast and I don't know. I think a lot had

to do with him and himself and the the the naivety

of the character that he played Yeah, it like

it had that slapstick comedy. I think that you

know, he would expect for a family show So and

yeah, I mean actually this is about right where

I had it on my list So I think it's a good spot

for it and I like you guys I'm a little surprised

it's not higher But again, it's a continuing

the one common that we're seeing with that list

and that surprises So let's see what's next on

the list as we get into the next show on our

countdown Eighty -three Well, so far we saw shows

on Network TV, we saw shows on cable TV. Well,

we're seeing our first show with number 83, our

first show that is actually on a streaming service

as we are breaking ground here with Orange is

the New Black at number 83. It was on eight lists.

We received 454 points, four more points than

Home Improvement, as high as ranked as number

nine. So it was on one person's top 10 list.

that I know it's getting a lot of claim it's

surprising enough it's actually but when people

not realize the most watched show on Netflix

so it is breaking ground in that end so it's

a kind of cool seeing where one show on a streaming

service showing up already Amanda let's start

with you here any thoughts on orange is the new

black showing up at number 83 I actually only

ranked this in my top 100 because I know how

popular it is I've only seen maybe five minutes

of an episode and it was some weird lesbian prison

sex and I was like yeah I'm not really sure about

the show yet so I think that I need to warm up

to it a little bit more because um who's that

chick from that 70s show Donna it was her and

some other chick and they were like hardcore

getting it on in jail and I was like yeah I think

this is pretty much all the show is but I know

that it's so popular that there's got be something

behind it. Kevin, any thoughts on Orange is the

New Black? I'm still trying to... picture Amanda's

face when she watched those five minutes and

didn't know what she was getting into. I was

a little confused, and then when I realized what

was happening, I was like, well, I think I kind

of knew this is what was going to happen. I can

see the draw to the... That's dumb to say right

after she said that. I can see the draw. I watch

it for the article. Right? They have good wings.

You watch it for the article. At this point,

that's all you can do. No, I understand that

notwithstanding. I can understand how people

got into it for other reasons. I think it was

something that was unique. It was something that

was kind of maybe for a lot of other people that

were seeing a lot of those types of shows as

far as what I'm talking about with like gritty

crime prison type stuff. They were seeing a lot

of that that was basically dominated by male

casts. And so I can see where maybe this one

comes along and offer something different that

people gravitate to. I've only seen a part of

a few episodes when other people were watching

it and I did kind of get sucked into whatever

the story was, but because I didn't continue

watching, I can't really tell you much about

characters or plot lines or anything like that.

But I think it definitely does have the ability

to kind of capture you once you've been watching

an episode or two and kind of keep you for the

long haul. I think it goes for that being the

all -female cast. I think that they do play super

heavy on the girl on girl thing because they

think that's what people really want to see.

And I think that that should be a small part

of it. I think that if I watch more of this,

I'll be interested to see what the story does

to see if they don't just go for that sex sells

kind of viewpoint. So we'll see. oranges in the

black for me was a show that I didn't have much

interest in but my my wife started watching it

and I kind of Yeah, I like caught it secondhand.

I wasn't really paying attention, but I did get

sucked into it and I would say that yeah There

is you know, that sex aspect of it But that's

really a small piece of it and it really hits

that dramedy not to bring up that word because

it's an awful word But it really hits that that

sweet spot really well because there are some

comic moments But it gets some into some dark

moments too. And it was interesting that it's

one of the few shows that was been and nominated

for both best comedy and best drama. And it has

been nominated for 12 Emmy awards. It's won a

few for performances, Golden Globes as well.

So it does come in with award acclaim. And it's

saying a lot. It really kind of, you know, House

of Cards really, I think, got the attention showing,

like, because it had big names attached. But

I think Orange is the New Black to me was maybe

arguably the better show. Being an all -female

cast is I think an additional benefit to it because

it does get into a lot and gets into all the

characters. There are a lot of characters that

are specific, a lot of episodes are specifically

directed to specific characters and you kind

of get their background and you end up with such

a rich show because you get so many well -developed

relationships and you're really understanding

where the people come from and it's a variety

of different types of people and types of people

you don't necessarily see on TV. They're not

the glamorous types. It's and it's not overly

gritty like something like Oz It's not like the

woman version of Oz, but it's able to really

catch that balance So I think it's deserving

of 83. I can maybe even argue that it should

be higher I do think that maybe that the fact

that it's on netflix could impact people because

if you don't have that netflix You can't watch

it so it could have Being on netflix they can

they can do a little bit more as far as what

they could put on these other prime time shows,

I think that That's they push the envelope because

they can and that's what people want I think

this too is going to be one of an Examples of

shows that you know, maybe we talk about when

we get to the wrap -up But this is a prime candidate

for something that if you do this list five years

from now Ten years from now could definitely

jump in the rankings Yeah, and and like you and

I think being on netflix too. Not only can you

just do whatever you want. You also don't need

to Go to small things like time format. You could

be like 47 minutes or something like that. Like

you can you can make your show last as long as

it should. So there's been a lot of that. But

Steve, I don't think you was ranked on the list

or you saw the show, but I did have a question

for you. Do you think you will see any more shows

like this? Orange is black. Any of those those

shows that are on the streaming services, which

is relatively new only in the last few years.

Any chance we'll see more show up in the top

100? I can only say so because I think a lot

of the stronger shows that we're getting now

at this point are coming out on these streaming

services only in that they don't have, and I'm

not saying that there aren't strong shows on

the other networks, but I think that because

the other ones are controlled by networks, they're

hindered in that fashion. Much like you guys

said, they can make them however long they need

to be or kind of get around those obstacles because

of being at a streaming service compared or being

on cable where just anybody can get on it. Because

I mean, Netflix can be different by profiles

based on age. So you can lock kids out of that.

So it can be as graphic as it needs to be compared

to being on cable where any kid can just flip

the channel and watch it. So that's why they

can't really do any of the stuff that they're

getting away with away with here. But that being

said, like my wife watches the show like I have

caught it here or there just being in the same

room. It's not a show I get into personally,

but it's I can see why the acclaims there. I

think the other thing with the Netflix shows

is Yes, we're gonna wait on the production of

the show But once it releases they release a

whole season at one point. It's not just no I

know but I'm starting to change though, right

but I'm saying like, you know, you take something

like The Flash or Arrow or any other show that's

on broadcast network television and you still

have to wait a week for the next episode whereas

with orange is the new black and any other show

house of cards that's on netflix they put the

whole season out at once so you can just sit

there and binge watch if you're interested in

whatever show that they put out i do that with

hemlock grove but as soon as i put that out i'm

like yeah watch this and then i'm like i have

no idea what's going on now i have to wait for

this to happen Again like yeah, but I'm glad

that they do that because I hate when books and

on the cliffhanger I hate when movies that are

gonna have a sequel and a cliffhanger. I just

I want to know I want to know now Occasionally

occasionally some people's watch maybe certain

scenes, you know Already well, let's get out

of this conversation as quickly as possible as

we get it into the next in the countdown 82 Well

for this next show on this list, maybe we should

just Adlib because it would be fitting for as

number number 82 coming in with seven on seven

lists with 454 points is whose line is it? Anyway,

it was highest ranked as number nine. So it did

reach the top ten for for one person It was on

the fewest list we've seen so far only seven

But for the people that did rank it did rank

it relatively high. Let's start with Mike here

Was this a shot show that was defined? when we

came up with the rules because there's two versions

of this there's the u .s. version in the u .k.

version and both got votes so both the whose

line is in any way it was separated so both the

u .s. version and the u .k. version did get votes

so and uh they were separated so this was which

one is this this is the u .s. version okay a

good one whoa no offense to uk listeners Yeah,

you can't think that like talk about books and

stuff. I'm very well versed in both universes

I will say there technically there's been three

areas of the show the two American which are

technically a continuation of each other and

then there's the the British version and Without

getting into the British version the American

version. Yes, it started with true Carrie, but

it was very PC and very there were only so many

limited things that they could do because of

it being on an ABC channel So there were a lot

of things that they couldn't actually talk about

or actually say or actually do Whereas now that

it's on the CW and it's it's got the new host

and it's got the new format And not as strict

to the guidelines they can go anywhere. They

want to they just bleep out whatever it shouldn't

on air so But it's just going I mean on 12 seasons

total if you combine with the the 2000 well the

98 to 2004 and then when they revived it in 2000

I want to say 11 yeah with the true carry version

it They may have been restricted, but they still

got away with a lot of jokes Not really if you

go back to watch the because I have a lot of

the DVDs with a lot of the outtakes And there's

a lot of stuff that did past as there were certain

things that got passed, but it depended I would

almost argue that the the the newer version is

better than that But it's also at the same time

because it's got all the special guests instead

of actually having more for the skits So it's

kind of a double -edged sword. I I love the show

but it's it's I Almost want to argue that the

UK one's better My only problem with the current

incarnation of the US one is the guests because

they have the way they structure it is a guest

will come out and they'll do a skit then they'll

act like oh hey you're leaving see you bye and

it's like if you're gonna have a guest in the

entire show to work with most of the skits have

them on the whole show don't just have them show

up for 10 seconds Alrighty, I can't say to that

because I've not watched the updated version.

But I mean, thoughts on whose line is it anyway

showing up on here at number 82. Do you think

it gets hurt by the fact there are so many versions

of it? I don't think it draws away because you

either like the show I think or you don't. And

I mean, two words stick out. Wayne Brady, that's

pretty much all I get out of that. So I mean,

I enjoyed it. It wasn't my favorite show. I've

seen quite a bit of it, but nothing that really

stuck out that I remembered. I had fun with it,

but I think I got bored with it after a while.

So I don't think I even got into the newer versions

or even the UK. I think it's a good spot where

it's at. Kevin, any thoughts? I mean, I loved

Wayne Brady and I'm going to forget the other

two guys. Brian Stiles and Colin Mochrie. Yeah,

I loved all of those guys, but I have never been

a fan of Drew Carey. So that kind of was a turnoff

for me, but I remember enjoying the show and,

you know, I did like it. I like certain segments

better than other segments, but generally did

laugh. And I do like that improv style. I think

if we're talking sketch shows, I would put Carol

Burnett and a higher ranking than whose line

is it anyway. But again, it was on for a long

time. There's been multiple versions. A lot of

people like it. So I don't have a problem with

it being on the countdown. Yeah, I don't disagree.

I think I would definitely put carol banana head

of whose line maybe do it a little bit of a flip

-flop I do like his line. It was a lot of fun.

I didn't really watch the new version I did watch

a little the uk version when it was like syndicated

on comedy central But I think my heart was with

the abc version What's kind of interesting is

that someone did try to combine the versions

and see who? Had the most points who ranks at

number one any ideas of who ranks at number one

for the most points And who line isn't anyway?

Wow Cost you I'm gonna say Colin McCree. It doesn't

matter because of points that matter. No Number

number one was actually Wayne Brady as he had

total points of over 50 billion 72 million points

number two was Ryan Stiles he only had 11 11

billion so and then call mockery with a measly

3 billion. So yeah That is that is that's doing

a fantasy ranking for whose line that there's

your top three That was actually my least favorite

part of the show was the and I know it's just

sketch comedy and whatnot But maybe I'm just

too cutthroat. I wanted the points to be more

systematic They actually did count in the British

one. Yeah, okay American one if they didn't matter

The the British when they actually counted the

points and like Clive Anderson was the host of

that one and he would actually break it down

and tell who was actually winner of it and They'd

have to basically sit out but That's the winner

get to sit out. Yeah, they're like you're gonna

sit out everybody else has to be my improv monkeys

out there and but no, I think that the One of

the funny things about the whole thing is the

whole staple of the show pretty much is Colin

Mochrie and Ryan Stiles Being that Ryan was on

it for the almost its entirety since the the

initial UK version and then Colin joined in shortly

thereafter and they've been on it ever since

I remember when I first saw the ABC version of

whose line I'm just like wait a second. What's

judge Reinhold doing on skits? I swear Ryan Stiles

and judge Reinhold almost look exactly alike

No, he wasn't All right, well let's Let's put

a ribbon on the whose line is it anyway talk

and move on to the next on the lesson Let's just

say we're gonna get maybe a little bit more modern

I've said hint was a little too on the nose as

in number 81 We're going back and we're staying

in the world of comedy with one of today's most

recognized comedies modern family at number 81

it was on ten lists, so it's actually on one

of the higher amount of lists so far, 460 points.

Highest ranked though, it did not get ranked

very high by many people, it was 32, so it did

not rank higher than that, which I found a little

surprising. Maybe Kev, let's start with you here.

Any thoughts on Modern Family coming in at number

81? I had it ranked at 77. So again a little

close again a little close. I mean, it's it's

it's further apart, but you know, your streaks

still live. But no, I think this is this is legitimately

deserving for a lot of reasons. It's very popular,

obviously does well with the ratings, but it

does super well when it comes to awards. So,

I mean, I think it's one actually for best comedy

five times out of the seven seasons. So that's

a bit obnoxious to the rest of the competitors

that have been nominated. That's like back in

the day when... I can't remember what show literally

like won every year. And it was like, all right,

guys, Frazier or Seinfeld or something like that.

So I mean, Modern Family definitely does well

with whoever's in charge of the Emmys. But I

think it's deserving. That's why I put it on

77. It kind of falls in that same range for me

as How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory

and a few other ones that are these modern comedies

that have kind of shifted away from just the

standard sitcom and gotten a little bit more

diverse with their styles and stuff like that,

so I think it's deserving. Amanda, like Kevin

mentioned, Modern Family is a show that gets

a lot of accolades, gets a lot of awards. Do

you think it actually hurts it as people get,

like Kevin mentioned, get annoyed just by how

much love it gets? I think that the way it gets

hurt is it's setting its own bar, it's setting

its own standard, and can it... live up to its

own expectations and for the next season. I think

it is a really great show. I'm not really sure

about awards and things because I'm not that

cool. Or that nerdy. Or that nerdy. Either way,

same difference. People could get annoyed just

like I get annoyed with Taylor Swift fucking

winning everything and I hate her in her face

and her teeth and She just have awful teeth Just

her whole face I just want to rearrange it with

my face I didn't think we'd get Taylor Swift

mentions on the record today We got a little

Taylor Swift some T Swift as I like to say when

I'm on the radio cuz I don't like saying her

whole fucking names I hate her that same thing

where people, there's so much love surrounding

them and I think there might be a faction that

just doesn't get it and they might be those ones

that are annoyed with it. See, I think I've heard

you talk about Modern Family a few times. I believe

you're not a fan, so are you, do you think it

does not deserve to be in the top 100? I get

why people like it. Like, I mean, I... Something

about the show just doesn't sit right with me

when I'm trying to watch it, so I can't really

fathom putting myself to more of it. If that

makes any sense, like, it's just not my style

of comedy, so I don't really like it. If it doesn't

have a laugh track, I find it immensely unentertaining

to me. I wouldn't say boring because I laughed

for that last time, but I just, I don't find

it entertaining. that regard, but I don't necessarily

watch a show because it has the laugh track and

that doesn't cause me to laugh or anything. I

just, I'd usually choose to watch the shows that

have it because I don't like the dead air during

the show because it sounds very off -putting.

With a show like Water Family, what you see with

a mockumentary style, there is almost, it's a

pseudo laugh track where it's not necessarily...

The laugh track, but it's the reaction of people

around the conversations that are happening where

you almost it's the looking at the camera It's

like the breaking the the fourth wall where it's

almost taking the replace of your if your common

laughter But if that's not something that you

know, you don't like that style I can understand

that and that could be why I don't like it because

I've never thought about the fact that it's a

mockumentary which is You know, it's basically

documentary style shooting and I don't like documentaries.

So that's probably what else I could. Blasphemy

blasphemy. Kevin, you mentioned like ranking

it within How I Met Your Mother and those type

of Big Bang Theory. And to me, this show is,

in all honesty, a step above those shows. Writing

wise, it's so much more clever to me than a show

like How I Met Your Mother. And unlike How I

Met Your Mother, I think it's a show you can

you could watch any bits and pieces of it like

come in season six. or whatever. Episode 18 and

understand everything that's going on. I think

it gets kind of a bad rap for being a safe show

per se It's it's a you know, it's a family show

So it doesn't maybe it's not as risky as something

like we talked about with it's always sunny in

Philadelphia It doesn't go that route But I think

it's it's a safe show that is able to be really

clever and there's some jokes that are Really

smart and really it's really keen on the great

setup. It knows how to really set up jokes Well

almost as well as I'm not to put it in this came

for something like Seinfeld or something like

that, that it sets the stage and then when the

punchline hits it really works. It does, I think,

rely on some of the same jokes too much with

some of the characters, but Phil Dunphy to me

is a fun character. I do really enjoy it. And

it does, again, maybe rely on some of the tropes

of that side of the mockumentary a little too

much, but I don't know. I enjoy Modern Family.

Could it be higher? Maybe, but you know, it's

not like it's going to go anyplace, so I think

it's a good spot for it where it's at. All righty,

let's move on to next in the countdown Coming

in this to me I get another surprise coming in

at number 80 not necessarily It's bad, but when

you think you cast radio you think nerd you think

geek type of shows This is not necessarily a

show you think would be have universal love but

apparently it does because it's coming in and

number 80 and that is The Golden Girls, coming

in with 461 points and beat Modern Family by

a point. Eight lists, as high as ranked as number

nine. So it didn't meet the top 10. So that's

kind of where it beat out Modern Family, getting

ranked a little higher. Mike, starting with you

here, do you think The Golden Girls is getting

ranked so high simply based upon looks of its

cast? No. Do you have Glanche's poster in your

room still? No, but seriously though any thoughts

on the golden girl? This show it's it's essentially

a show about friendship It's a show that broke

ground really for women in television because

there were issues in that show that Had never

been on TV before and a pause You'd know We've

already established that I'm the young one here,

so don't try to hate i'm still viable this is

going down a road i did not expect all right

do you think uh mike that golden girls is is

number 80 good spot for it should it be higher

what are your thoughts it could be a bit higher

but 80 is fine for what we're doing here amanda

i know this is maybe a show before your time

as well but any thoughts on golden girls i love

golden girls i've seen so many reruns obviously

not when they first aired but there's been a

ton of lessons to be learned From these ladies,

I think that that opening song, I don't care

what you're doing, when you hear this song, you

get that feel good feeling and you want to go

sit in your kitchen and have some pie and talk

about Saint Olaf or wherever you're from. So

I think that I'm a little shocked that this is

this low. I think it's one of those big iconic

shows that everybody at least will know and maybe

not love, but I think that there's a lot to take

away from the show, and I think it should definitely

be higher. Steve, are you a fan of Golden Girls?

Do you think you're surprised to see it here

on this list? I'm not surprised to see it. I

mean, I understand somebody may have voted for

it. It's surprising being a predominantly geeky

list, to have it actually show up. in general,

but I don't disregard why it's here. I personally

did not vote for it, but that's neither here

nor there. It's kind of funny. Kevin, thoughts

on Golden Girls? I'm still trying to figure out

what's happening. When you said that, I was actually

somewhat in shock. I couldn't hear it because

I gasped. He swooned. No, I don't get it. I had

this at number 15. it was on seven seasons it

was nominated for best comedy seven times all

seven years for golden globe six of the years

for an amy it was in the top 10 rated shows six

out of its seven seasons it has a lot of people

as funny as it is i think way more people enjoy

the show than you would realize in all circles

geek circles, different age groups, different

whatever. I think for some reason this resonates

a lot and a lot of people have caught this on

rerun. just the cast involved and the whole dynamic.

This is a comedy that was, it was unique. It

was different than a lot of the other types of

sitcoms out there. I mean, how many other sitcoms

were about a group of five aging women or there's

not even one about five aging men. Like it's,

I don't know. It's, this one deserves to be higher.

I don't understand. You could probably blame

me because I didn't rank it. Maybe that was more

of a brain fart on my part, but it's just, it's

a show that I, you know, it's one I didn't really

watch a great deal. But thinking about it, looking

at it, it does make a lot of sense considering

at the end of the day, no matter the age of the

characters, gender of the characters, when you

have a funny show, it can resonate with a lot

of people. And I think that's bottom line what

Golden Girls was, you know, obviously had more

than just laughs. It had, as Amanda mentioned,

dealt with a lot of, and Mike mentioned, dealt

with a lot of Strong issues, but at the end of

the day I think just having really funny dynamic

characters that are all diverse and have their

own personality and talking about the cast as

far as how You know, I mean all of the almost

all these people did more than Golden Girls before

or after like there's some very experienced actresses

involved in the Golden Girls And I'm sorry, I

didn't mean to cut you off. I'm still trying

to come to terms. Yeah, I know. It's a little

shocking, a little shocking. We'll get through

it, though. We'll get through it together. Yeah,

yeah. So yeah, Golden Girls growing down at number

80 and coming up next, we're about to break new

ground in multiple ways. So let's see what's

in store next. Yes, we're breaking ground for

a few reasons first off usually this is when

the show ends and we're in our next episode But

as we're going to number 76 today, we keep on

going But we also break new ground because we're

getting our first show on a premium Network as

we're getting at number 79 Homeland. Yes, we

received 462 points on seven lists, highest ranked

at number 12 by two separate people. Kevin, are

you shocked that this is the first time we're

getting to a show that is not on one of those

cable networks or general ABC embassy networks?

I'm either shocked or... I'm shocked if it turns

out one direction and I'm not shocked if it turns

out another one because it surprises me that

it has taken this long to get there. So I would

be shocked if that means that there's not going

to be as many of these or maybe it just means

that the ones that are on there are going to

be ranked much higher. This definitely has a

whole lot of critical acclaim and has been very

much put. You know, if people were ranking, especially

if we were doing like modern shows, like ranked

the best shows from the year 2000 on, this would

probably be, you know, very high on that list.

So I am a little bit surprised that it's taken

this long, but maybe that means that a lot of

them are ranked pretty high. And it's kind of

interesting when you look at how close the last

few shows are. Modern Family was number 81 with

460 points. Homeland at 79. 462 points. So we've

only gone up, we've gone up three spots and each

spot has only been one more point. That means

all it took was one person ranking at 100 to

boost it over those other ones. Exactly, exactly.

Well, luckily for this, no one ranked that extremely

high. I've heard a lot of people compare current

shows to what Homeland used to do. Or what it

did originally like I know a lot of people that

do podcasts for like reviews of the blacklist

or Some shows like that and they compare it to

homeland a lot. I just don't get the appeal I

do honestly the first season to me I have seen

I haven't seen the most recent season, but I've

seen every other season before that Speaking

of someone who has watched the show the first

season ranks to me is one of the best seasons

I've ever seen it You know, Claire Danes, it's

her character can kind of get on your nerves

a little bit, her character being like bipolar

at times, and it's just she can maybe play it

a little too on the nose, but at the end of the

day, it was, you know, it is that thriller show.

It had an interesting plot, really great mystery.

What do you got there? Nothing. Do you want me

to take a look? When you brought the computers

back up, you rebooted the monitoring system.

I'm still station chief. I get notified whenever

someone opens a safe. Well, I know this isn't

for you. Or this. Where is he? I don't know.

Okay, where are you supposed to deliver this

then? Nowhere. Max, what are you trying to do?

You took advantage of her. You mean Farrah? She

was a financial analyst. I know. She did spreadsheets.

And you brought her here to this f***ing place.

And I told you how sorry I am. What more do you

want me to say? Don't say anything. Okay, what

do you want me to do then? Bring her back. I

wish I could, but I can't. Then get Hakani. I

can't do that either. Since when? You never say

that. You were in charge here, and you survived,

and now you're saying there's nothing to do for

her, but you're just not willing. I am willing,

but I cannot lose anyone else. It kind of lost

its way in season three when it tried to maybe

keep characters around longer than it should,

but The last season really kind of brought it

back in the head when it kind of jumped around

a little bit in time. But when this show was

really on, it's again, suspenseful. It's very

timely dealing with a lot of the stuff of today,

obviously being homeland, being dealing with

terrorists. I've never seen Blacklist. I think

I don't know how it really compares from what

I did see at Blacklist. It's a little bit more.

It's not super, super realistic. It's not like

it's. Documentary like style is super gritty,

but I would think it's more not nearly as out

there as as blacklist I think it's more you know

put you in the ground trying to get some sort

of reality compared to That a blacklist. I do

think it deserves to be on here I could see maybe

an argument for being higher, but knowing what's

on the list. I think it's an etiquette spot I'm

not arguing for being lower, but okay Have you

watched it? No, but The point that I was saying

earlier about people that watch the Blacklist

that relate the Blacklist to Homeland is more

so how the FBI works in both shows. That's where

the comparisons are coming from. OK, but it's

dealing with the CIA. They do different things.

But hey, I have not really watched Blacklist

a great deal. But I do enjoy what I did see.

But I really enjoy Homeland. So I think it does

deserve being on here. So I'd be curious to hear

what other people have to say. I just think it's

really surprising it took this long to get to

a premium network. So we'll see what that has

in store as we continue this list. So we took

a small break from the world of comedy, but we're

going back again at number 78 with 464 points

It was on nine lists. I show I guess there's

more love for it than I realized and that is

scrubs Yeah, Zach grass himself coming in at

number 78 Caviar will start with you here Shocked

to see scrubs. I guess maybe for me up so high

I don't know if I'm unloading that This makes

me wish that we were having another briscoe county

take a spot here. I actively hate this show I

I am turned off by just about I've tried I've

been around a lot of people that watch this show

and I I think I had a roommate that really liked

this show at one point and I tried and I was

just Honestly, I actively turned off by it. I

didn't find it funny. I found most of the...

I couldn't appreciate it for anything. I couldn't

appreciate it for the actors, for the jokes,

for anything about it. I hate the show. Sorry.

I've been here five years, big guy. I know that.

Kim, it's a game we play. What's your name? It's

Dirk. What's that guy's name? I don't know. He's

a patient. Looks like a Dave. Are you a Dave?

Maybe he's a Dave. We don't know. Hey. Torture

him about this. We'll do. Peace out. How come

I never noticed her before? Oh, because she wears

a wedding ring. Yeah, you don't notice women

who wear wedding rings. Kim was here on your

first day. That's enough. She was at Ben's funeral.

Dude, she's been around. So you're saying because

she wears a wedding ring, she's invisible to

me? Yes. Please, T. I'm not that shallow. Oh,

really? Will all women who are married in the

area please remove your wedding rings? Thank

you. Dr. Feinberg? Anastasia? Don't hold back.

I was hoping it did not make the list. What's

that? How the hell did it get nine years? Well,

that's the thing. It ended up, this is one of

those shows that, you know, it was on NBC. Lee's

NBC gave us ABC for a few years, perhaps maybe

staying on for too long. Steve, is Scrubs a show

you saw? Any thoughts on Scrubs? I've tried watching

it. It has that like campy and like really stupid

comedy in it. So I just, I couldn't do it. Anyone

have any positive things? It depends on the episode,

honestly. It depends on how the episodes are

set up. I've seen a few episodes. I eventually

want to go back and rediscover the show. There's

two actors in this show that I absolutely love.

It's the chief of the overall hospital and, oh

god, I forget what his name is, the other guy

that's the second -in -command. And I'm not looking

at... any lists or anything as far as who it

is, but I really enjoy those actors. But yeah,

this show, this is, I think this is stranger

showing up on our countdown than Golden Girls.

Yeah, I guess. I mean, I don't I don't hate the

show per se. I'm not a big fan of Zach Grass

and pretty much anything he does. Do you want

to rank this as the 10th best show of all time?

It did happen. It did happen. I'm sorry. So up

to number 10. Yeah, it was on my list as high

as ranked as number 10. So yeah, there you go.

But consider again, we're talking about how close

this list is. I mentioned Modern Family had 460

points. Scrubs has 464. So as we go up this list,

when it comes to the point totals, we're not

going up that far. So it's really nitty gritty

here. Let's see if that continues as we get into

the next in our countdown. 77. Well, it's been

quite a long time since we talked about a cop

show back in number 86 with dragnet and we're

gonna talk about another one at number 77 we

have NY PD blue with 466 points again only two

more points than scrubs We're not getting huge

difference in points here on nine lists as high

as ranked as number 15 Kev, I know you hated

Scrubs. Any better feelings towards NYPD Blue?

NYPD Blue deserves a spot over Scrubs. Every

single time you make this list, at any point

in the future, the past, whatever. Man, I'm still

getting over the Scrubs thing. But yeah, I mean,

NYPD Blue was pretty well -acclaimed, nominated

for a lot of awards. It was very much high -rated.

Two seasons in the top 10, five seasons in the

top 20. Over half of its seasons were nominated

as far as best drama. So, I mean, I'm not someone

that watched, excuse me, that was like a die

-hard watcher of NYPD Blue. So, I'm not its biggest

fan, but I still recognized how popular it was

and how well -received it was. So, I have no

problem with it showing up somewhere on the list.

Mike, I know you watched a little bit of NYPD

Blue. Thoughts on it coming in here at 77? Let's

get a little bit of background leading up to

our top 100 here Dan had been putting and I think

you're still gonna be putting up matchups But

on our Facebook page and Twitter and all that

he would put up matchups of show versus show

and which was the better one and Before we recorded

this episode the the one you put up was the shield

FX is the shield versus NYPD blue and one of

my comments on the post was Yeah NYPD blue the

show that was like every week. Okay, how can

we show Dennis France's ass? Cuz that's really

I'm sure that was their goal. I'm sure it was

too I mean, let's face it that show was all Andy

Sifowitz Dennis France's character it was pretty

much all his character and dealing around the

stories that you know, dealt with him. I haven't

thought about NYPD Blue in at least 15 years.

I know it was a damn good show at its time, at

its peak, but I haven't actually seen an episode

in such a long time. I do remember, though, when

one of the, I forget which season it is, you

know, Zach Morris joined the cast. I'm like,

oh, maybe that'll bring the ratings up for it.

Getting all that saved by the bell, well, yes,

I'm sure. Yeah. Well, we started with Saved by

the Bell. It's fitting that we're getting near

the end here with a Saved by the Bell connection.

Amanda, any thoughts on NYPD Blue? Uh, I haven't

seen any of this either, so I'm out. I caught,

sadly enough, I actually, in there with Mike,

I actually started watching NYPD Blue simply

because I'm like, oh, that's Zach Moore. So I

remember when he was cool. So I started watching

NYPD Blue. And, you know, it's weird seeing him

in a different light and went back and watched

the show. I like NYPD Blue. Some people maybe

argue that it should be higher than Kevin mentioned

with all the accolades, you know, has. Won multiple

Emmys. It was highly ranked. It was highly one

of those shows that was both high ratings and

Well received by critics to me. I like it It

still fits in within the cop procedurals. I think

it's better than most shows. I think it may be

better. It's more middle of the road. Not middle

of the road, but I think there are cop shows

that are way, way above NYPD Blue. It gets a

lot of claim for its grittiness. I think the

issue that hurts NYPD Blue is the shows that

have come after that are... It was gritty for

early 90s, and it kind of represented the type

of show that was out there with the Commish and

NYPD Blue and Homicide Life on the street. Which

at the time probably seemed a lot more gritty

than it does now Yeah, and Amy it did push the

boundaries. I mean it was a network TV show so

Considering that but I think that is kind of

what happens with when that's like a key point

to your show when you have shows that can do

it better Than you so I think it deserves a good

spotter. I think it deserves top 177 is I think

a decent spot for it Steve any thoughts before

we move on to the last of today as we get into

number 76 and a cop t -drill fan So that's not

something I would have watched. All right. Well,

we have one more show to go before we end today's

episode We've had a lot of variety. We kind of

got in a lot of directions and I don't know this

is gonna be We talked about surprises. I think

that's gonna continue with our next entry 76

All right. Well, we've had two sketch comedy

shows already with Carol Burnett and whose line

is it anyway? Maybe this show maybe not as well

known but it certainly has a cult cult following

a strong following as you'll see here coming

in at number 76. It is those crazy Canadians,

the kids in the hall with 476 points. So this

is the first time we took a jump in point totals.

NYPD Blue only had had 466 points, which was

only six more than number 81. So we're taking

a 10 point jump here. Only on eight lists though,

I think, so it's on fewer lists, but it got its

highest ranked as number 16. In fact, the majority

of people who voted for this voted for it within

their top 25. Big reason why it's on the list

here. You know, it is, I think, a show that,

again, a show that wasn't, I came to because

of its syndication in Comedy Central, a show

that has a very unique comedy setting. Kevin,

I know with Scrubs you talked about how you hated

that comedy. Any thoughts on The Kids in the

Hall? I'm going to be somewhat ignorant on this

one. I haven't seen enough to speak too much

of it. I know that there is a cult following

to it, and I know it definitely has a certain

fandom for it in the same way that a few other

sketch comedy shows might have as well. I think

it's one that kind of flies under the radar and

could get lost in the shuffle, but obviously

those people that voted on it voted on it high

enough to make the list. The first time I watched

it, I think it was The Bird Lady or something

like that, and I'm like, what in the world is

this show? The show business is full of actors,

singers, dancers, and models. And then there's

me. Actor, singer, dancer, model, Canadian. I

can make the word Canadian sound sexy. Most people

think that I'm from the States. And even worse,

they think that I'm from New York. Because I'm

so sexy. But New York isn't sexy. It's sleazy.

Americans know as much about Canada as... straight

people do about gays. This was a group that was

existed prior, but Lauren Michaels brought them

to TV and helped make them stars per se. And

necessarily it did receive some I mean, love

for outstanding variety show did receive a couple

nominations, though maybe its best award perhaps

the best award we've talked about today is the

fact that its hosts, the members of its cast

did get the worldwide acclaim of getting a star

on Canada's Walk of Fame. So let's be honest,

I can't really get a higher accolade than that,

being on the Canadian Walk of Fame there with

Wayne Gretzky and, I don't know. Sling to get

under somebody. Pamela Anderson probably, just

right next to them. But yeah, the kids in the

hall, it's... As I mentioned, it's only on eight

lists, so I think what happens with these types

of sketch shows is that there is a certain type

of taste comedy -wise, and it gets difficult

if you're not within that, but I think, too,

it got a huge second life on things like YouTube

and those shows where people can watch its clips

and things. Steve or Amanda, any thoughts on

Kids in the Hall? Play hockey, and that's as

close to anything Canadian as I get. Question

here is we had three sketch comedies. We had

Kevin. I throw this question to you because you

I think you We had kids in the hall. We had who

whose line is it anyway, and we had the Carol

Burnett show How did we get that order? Do you

think we got the order right should be switched

at all? Um, we got it in reverse So who's that

stays where it is and the girl Burnett gets where

this is that? Yep, that's what I would go with.

I would put Carol Burnett as the best and then

out of these three and then who's lying. But

I'm saying that completely ignorant on Kids in

the Hall because I just haven't seen enough of

it to judge it fairly. Do you think it is a sign

of things to come knowing that we're seeing some

of these shows that really have strong cult followings

doing pretty well? I think maybe with the group

that we have we're going to have some more shows

that have maybe smaller... under the radar cult

followings that maybe got enough points to make

the list. Maybe we have a group that really likes

sketch comedy and maybe we're going to see a

whole bunch of other sketch comedy shows added

to the list. It's weird though because sketch

comedy was way more of a prevalent and popular

thing in the early TV days and my thought is

going to be that we're going to probably see

a lot more modern sketch comedy shows which it's

going to be an interesting conversation if you

were to take the genre of it's you know on its

own once we're done with this list to see how

it stacks up because every other show was a sketch

comedy show back in the early early tv days so

i have a feeling we're not going to see as many

of those but we might see a handful you know

two three more modern ones all right well let's

take a quick break and when we come back let's

just get some final thoughts before we end today's

episode Hey guys, this is JD from the In Session

Film Podcast. Every week on our show, you can

join my co -host Brendan and I as we review the

latest films that's out in theaters. It also

inspires us to discuss a top three list of some

sort, and we have a lot of other fun movie discussions

as well. It's always a blast. And we also have

a show on Fridays called our Extra Film Podcast.

This is a show that gives us the space to talk

about the latest Indies and art films and other

classics that we normally just don't get to talk

about on our main show. You can find our podcast

on iTunes, Stitcher Radio, SoundCloud, TuneIn

Radio, Player FM and more. In fact, you can just

see everything about us, including our social

medias at InSessionFilm .com. So join us every

week. We'd absolutely love to have you. I'm Colin

Baker. My name's Fraser Hinds. Hi, I'm Daphne

Ashbrook. This is Andrew Cartman. Hi. This is

Colin Spohr. Hello, I'm Simon Fischerbecker.

This is Ian McNeese. Hi, this is Travis Richie.

You listen to this bark. Oh, for two minutes.

Listen to Mark Who 42's universe. If you're into

Doctor Who, listen to Mark Who 42's universe.

We always have the latest Doctor Who news, reviews,

and interviews. So we have 25 shows down so far.

Unlike last list, we did not see any domination

in genre, any domination in years. We saw a huge

variety of everything, really. Kevin, starting

with you here. Surprise on what we saw so far.

Anything that stands out to you? man like you

said there's definitely some diversity going

on here i am surprised that we had a couple shows

that were on for such a short amount of time

make the list in uh you know one or two seasons

type of shows i am basically scared and cowering

in a corner because so far only eight of my 100

have made the list so i either have a lot that

are gonna still hopefully dominate the rest of

the countdown or I am going to have a whole lot

of my list that's not represented. So I'm going

to cry a few tears probably by the time this

whole thing is over. Steve, any shows to you

so far that really stand out that really shocked

you? I guess like the Briscoe County Junior and

the Scrubs and the shows like that that we all

had our public outcry about. I really don't know

of any other ones besides that and I think it's

kind of funny I've only got nine so far that

have been on my top 100 that have shown up I've

been keeping track because I'm like I have a

feeling which ones are gonna end up being closer

to the front but I'm probably way off the way

this list is going Amanda this is your first

time doing a top 100 list Was it everything you

expected? And more. Except that my favorite show

on the planet was so freaking low, and I don't

get it, and I'm pouting still. It blew my mind.

You guys crushed my dreams and my hopes. So I'm

not really sure what the rest of this list is

going to... Yeah, it just burst my little super

-action bubble. It's on the list, though. Half

my shows aren't going to be on the list. It just

sucks, though, because it's at the bottom end

of the spectrum and... It was number two for

me. Yeah, Dan the other thing too just not to

butt in but Maybe it's gonna have to deal with

the fact that we have so many more people that

contributed less than our last two top 100s Almost

by probably like 30 % more lists But we have

seen a whole bunch of shows that have been ranked

in People's top five already fall and that was

something that was never the case really too

much in our past countdowns I wanna know who

these motherfuckers are because I'm a little

upset. Yeah, I mean speaking we know not only

that we saw already so far three number ones

fall We saw a couple number threes fall couple

number twos fall a number four here in their

fall So yeah, I mean being ranked highly on one

person's list. It doesn't guarantee you I mean

it may it might help you get into the list for

sure But you needed like I mentioned it's one

thing we're gonna continue to see in order to

be on this list We're having so many people contribute

you need you know, either a couple of things

that happened being on a lot of lists or being

rankly really high on a select few. The fewest

list a show was on going into this was six lists.

So, which is honestly, which is low, but considering

the amount of people in the variety, and like

I mentioned, over 630 shows got votes on it so

far. Mike, you didn't get a chance to chime in

here. Yeah. So any thoughts on the countdown?

So as we... got into the first top 25. I think

still the biggest shock for this first episode

of the countdown is that Saved by the Bell was

100. You've got to be kidding me. I'm surprised

it made the list, but I think it's good. Well,

I think it's good. I just think it should be

higher. Yeah, I mean I could see that I'm not

saying I'm not saying higher is in top I mean,

I know everybody loves say by the bell most people

do apparently not by our standards, but I'm saying

like at least in the 80s maybe or the 70s not

just right at 100 because I was expect like Essentially

for me if I was doing this list, I'd probably

switch Say by the bell with agents of shit and

put agents of shit at 100 Well, you could do

that any other if there was one show that we

could take off and maybe Remove from this section

and bring in to next week's show any show. Do

you think that is most deserving Kevin? I mean

the the highest two that I had ranked were Golden

Girls and Carol Burnett show So I would probably

put Golden Girls in the next episode rather than

this one if that's what you're asking Yeah, I

think that's what I'm asking. So Uh, so 25 shows

down 75 shows more to go Any thoughts before

we bring this episode to a close? Um, we only

have 75 shows left and I need to fit 92 of them

in there It's not gonna happen well funny funny

story about that Alright, well that's gonna do

it for this first part of the top 100 television

  • Just started listening and I have to defend Briscoe County Jr. That show was awesome and just cause it was only one season doesn’t effect is quality. I only own three TV shows on DVD, and Firefly and Brisco County Jr. are two of them (Sci-Fi Westerns for the win). It’s sillier than Firefly, but has a really good mixture of plot and humor and the lead actors are just great.

    • I’m there with you. I don’t own the show but how aweomse was it to have Bruce Campbell on TV. Especially at that time. I’d love to see him play this character again. After seeing him in the Ash vs Evil dead show he could still do it.

  • So happy you guys are doing another one of these. Once I heard you were doing another one I got super stoked about getting a chance to see how it turn out. Have to say a few big surprises. The good: Kids of the Hall making the list (love that show), Always Sunny Making the list (although it should be much higher). The Bad: All the hate for Scrubs. Sorry but I love that show, Sports Night being on the list. Really? Where did that come from. Overall though happy with what you have so far. I love you get shows like Saved By the Bell, Andy Griffith and Louie all in one show.

    • See I remember enjoying Scrubs but haven’t seen it in years. It is a show I’m going to be re watching soon. Thanks for the feedback, glad you are enjoying the show!

  • Some random thoughts on the list.
“Kids in the Hall”- It’s okay, but if I was gonna put a Canadian sketch series,I would’ve probably put either “SCTV Network” or “Bizarre” ahead of it, if more people knew about them, they would’ve been ahead of them. Especially “Bizarre”, which I thought about too late to consider for my list, but yeah, “KITH” is okay, but there’s better sketch comedy on there.

“Scrubs”- Way too low. It was way ahead of it’s time, challenge many of the notions of comedy, it’s doesn’t the credit it should. It’s this generations “M*A*S*H”, and I don’t get the panning of it by some of you. It’s way too low, should’ve been Top 50, easily.

“Whose Line Is It Anyway?”-I had the British version on there, I would’ve brought up, how it really was, essential sketch comedy at it’s barest, literally, improvising, which had not been done more, and that’s why, at least some version belongs on the list. Really, revealing the first drafts of the writing process essentially, and that’s the thing that’s really unique about the series. Really stripping down something that, most people proudly didn’t think could be stripped down.

“Orange is the New Black”-Too soon, but okay.

“Home Improvement”-Didn’t make my list, but probably would’ve made send top 100. Um, I actually don’t think it holds up as well now, than it does back then, especially the later seasons. I think when you go back to those post-“Roseanne” shows that were about the more midwest, realist, stand-up influenced shows, “Grace Under Fire” is the one that really holds up better now, but still, I’m glad it’s on there.

“Knight Rider”-How the hell did this make it? Even if you’re going by nostalgia, I can think of five better cars from the eighties I would’ve put on there before “Knight Rider”. “Magnum”‘s car, “The Rockford Files”, eh, “Miami Vice” holds up better. I don’t get this at all.

“How I Met Your Mother”-If this show was on, in the ’70s, when “All in the Family” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “Soap”, and “Good Times” and all those other shows that were really re-imagining what a sitcom could be, then this show would be more respected. I mean, it’s hard to do a nine-season run on a sitcom, with a running storyline that you literally start from the first episode, very bold, very daring, even though, too many can easily mistake this as a “Friends” ripoff, it’s really, shocking how well they did this. A different era and it would’ve gotten more respect.

“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”- Okay, this is bullshit. Shouldn’t be on the list, shouldn’t have considered. Not a good show, at all,-, it’s yeah, this is when it’s clear that some people have TV knowledge and some don’t when crap like this makes it.

“Sesame Street”-It’s the only kids series that made my list, I’m curious to see if something like “Mister Rogers’s Neighborhood” or something like that makes it though; it’s tough to compare, but there is definitely more than enough reasons why “Sesame Street” needs to be on the list.

“Supernatural”-I don’t get why people like this show. WTH? It’s a dumber version of “The X-Files”, wth? This and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” people like certain things and therefore they’ll vote for, superhero, supernatural stuff, without regarding quality even within the genre. Yeah, I’m baffled it made the list, much less people defending it.

“The Adventures of Briscoe County, Jr.”-I don’t remember this show, but when I did my poll on my blog years ago, after polling 100 people, with just Top Ten lists, it did get one vote, so there is a base for it, I’m a bit shocked it showed up here. I do three one-season shows on my list, and yeah, I understand not putting too much stock in length of time, some thing don’t catch on, but this wasn’t one of them. And somebody has to explain to me the appeal of Bruce Campbell, I don’t get it.

“The Flintstones”-I guess you can argue it’s importance, but I’m a little surprised it showed up here. Let’s not even just compare it to animation, when you think of some of it’s competitors in the genres of a family sitcom where the family’s strange for some reason, up against “The Munsters” or “The Addams Family” or “Bewitched”, in that era, I don’t know, it’s kitsch appeal gets more faint the longer it’s passed in my mind.

“Saved By the Bell”- Oh c’mon, I know it’s nostalgic but this show is terrible. Just because we remember it fondly, I don’t know if it should be on here.

“Homeland”-I’m actually a little surprised this one showed up. It’s good, but I don’t rank it as a great series. Even in it’s first season, it’s basically a show with one trajectory and had nowhere to go but down, maybe it’s gotten a rebound lately, but-eh. It’s the same people who did “24” I believe, but that show was always intended to be a season long, only, and then they figured out how to extend it, and “Homeland” is kind of an example why you shouldn’t do that in my mind.

“Dragnet”-I’m glad the original version made the list, I was afraid the late ’60s one would’ve made it; not that that version, undeserving, but it’s oddly more dated, especially how anti-drug it was, it comes off more comedic. The gritty ’50s version, based on the radio series, definitely holds up better.

“The Carol Burnett Show”-Way, way, way too low. And it still holds the record for the longest recorded laugh in TV history with the “Gone With the Wind” parody sketch. That alone should’ve put it on the list.

Overall, eh, I’m nervous about the rest, but it’s not as bad as I worried it would be, so far anyway. Looking forward to the rest of the list.

    • Supernatural is a pretty decent show really, better than most. It’s not The Sopranos or anything, but it isn’t trying to be. It’s funny, the leads are pretty likeable, there are some really good horror moments.

It does run a bit long, they really are reaching for ideas by season 7 or so, and it’s fan community is really, really fucking crazy, but if you’re looking for an above average popcorn show, you could do a lot worse.

      • Yeah, “Decent”, that’s the word. That’s what annoys me with putting it on here. It’s decent, it’s not in the great echelon of series. No it isn’t a bad show-, (Well, it’s not bad for a CW show, I will need to qualify this) but it’s not great. I wonder about the fans of it, I know some myself, I suspect that A. they haven’t seen some of the better shows before and after it, but especially with horror fans, I have a theory that horror fans will anything horror whether it’s good or bad and react the same way. Hell, there’s a whole film subgenre based on this, grand guignal, horror as comedy. But, as to “Supernatural” the leads, eh, I don’t know they don’t seem interesting to me, I think they’re too pretty boy-ish honestly, Tina Fey has that theory about how “Friends” is the exception and no other TV show has been successful with all it’s main characters being young good-looking people, (I’d argue the British version of “Coupling” is the other exception, but…) it sorta applies here, to me and other than that though, all it ever feels like is a cheesy retread of better shows, and not done with like a nod to those others like, “Monk” for instance. I really don’t see the appeal.

        • I would argue that Party of Five was pretty dang successful with a cast of good looking people as well. Regardless of any opinions good or bad on Supernatural I would say it definitely has a huge following and maybe that alone warrants it getting a spot on the list.

          • Eh, some of the worst shows of all-time have a “following”, that’s- eh, I can’t go that far. Especially today, you know, people forget this now, but we’re in such a horrible time for television because there’s so much of it and, it’s all specialized towards an audience of some kind. A specific, it’s not going out into the ether and see who comes to it, which is new; that was never the case. Before there was three channels and that was it, you watched everything. A show like, “New Girl”, which is basically the center of FOX’s comedy lineup, gets ratings that were a 1/3 of shows that got cancelled ten years ago. Meanwhile, if you check the top most-watched TV broadcasts of all-time list, like the top 50 or top 100 or something, and most of it, what you expect, last episodes of “M*A*S*H”, “Cheers”, “Seinfeld”, “Magnum, P.I.”, (Yes, the highest rated drama series finale of all-time, is still “Magnum, P.I.”, by a mile btw over every other drama series finale you can think of.) and about twenty Super Bowls, and “Roots” and the “Who Shot JR”, Dallas, etc. etc., and somewhere on that list, like 49th still, or something like that, is an episode of “The Beverly Hillbillies”. Not a special episode, not a memorable episode, not a good episode, a random episode of “The Beverly Hillbillies”, that there is literally no explanation for why it’s has those ratings. Half the damn country watched it that night (And it was about half the country at the time) you watched things ’cause the novelty of a screen in your living room playing stuff, was still fresh. Popularity can make it noted but, I’d hardly call it a warranting reason for a list like this. (And in case you’re wondering, in it’s time, however big you think “Supernatural” is among it’s fans, “The Beverly Hillbillies” was about 25 times bigger, and worldwide too. Seems unbelievable today, but there a huge fanbase for it, that’s Beatle-like almost.) Anyway, I disagree fandom alone that not warrant a spot of a list like this. It shouldn’t anyway.

As to “Party of Five”, eh, it was moderately successful, although you’re the first person I’ve heard even mention it in fifteen years. It’s been that long since I’ve seen it, and from what I remember it, most of the cast was supposedly kids, (or were supposed to be) and it was primetime soap a la “…90210”, and, yeah, soap operas might be an exception to this rule, although most of the soap operas I can name have at least aged character that’s not exactly the epitome of youth. It’s been too long since I revisited “Party of Five” for me to remember, but I’ll bet there’s a regular that you might be forgetting that doesn’t fit the mold.

          • Interesting you have some done really well thought out responses and love reading them. Unfortunately I think I’ve disagreed with you on every point you’ve made so far. Again I didn’t say fandom or popularity is the end all be all of if a show should make the list. I said it’s one of a dozen components that should be considered. also you say you have no time for personal favorites…I hate to break it to you but Scrubs is clearly one of yours and I’m sorry it’s not funny it’s not genius and it’s not too 100 worthy!

          • I assume you are joking lol, but even as someone who didn’t enjoy Scrubs I could see its argument for Top 100. I honestly didn’t realize how critically praised it was until I started doing research. Still not a fan of it, but I do respect it.

          • Yeah, I’m not in the majority when it comes to believing this is the greatest era of television. That’s not to say that there aren’t great shows, I agree, but I think it’s closer to for every one “Breaking Bad”, there’s about ten “2 Broke Girl$”. Let me give a stat, 1973, Saturday Night Lineup for CBS. 8:00pm, “M*A*S*H”, 8:30pm, “All in the Family”, 9:00: “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, 9:30pm, “The Bob Newhart Show”, 10:00pm, “The Carol Burnett Show”. You will never get a lineup that good again. Now, here’s the other question I point to, when I see a lineup like that, “Who was the audience that those shows were aiming for?” And the answer to all of them is nobody. Actually that’s wrong, the answer is “Everybody”, and that’s the thing that really makes television unbearable to me nowadays, and why, maybe we have a lot of good shows on TV, but is it a good era of television, and I say no. Because everything is micromanaged to the point, where even great shows like a “Scrubs”, are going to be attracted to only a very particular group of people. The demographics era if you will, and too much of television does this. Not just in content, but even in audience, even to the point where networks are just based around getting that audience of whoever. CW particularly I find obnoxious (although they are getting slightly better) ’cause they usually seems to aim specifically for dumb 13-year-olds and usually takes what could have been a decent idea and then dumbs them down to the point where you’re no longer bringing an audience up to you, you’re going down to them. (That’s actually probably the #1 real reason I would strike “Saved By the Bell”, ’cause lets face it, you didn’t exactly feel like you were getting something substantial out of watching it. It’s sugary cereal, nothing nutritious but you feel filled up) I mean, I get it for a cable network to be doing that, ESPN should just be trying to get sports fans, but a basic network, I don’t even have to pay for? And yeah, every HBO and AMC, and Showtime, there’s ten or twelve TLC’s out there, and it’s not even that it’s reality vs. scripted, even a show “Game of Thrones”, a show I like, but it’s definitely more akin to a specific demographic than other demographics. That’s why I find it frustrating, there’s a lot more good stuff out there, but 20 or 30x more bad stuff too, and even sorting through the good stuff can just be an overload nightmare, and even then, it’s catering to an audience too much usually. There’s a great “A Bit of Fry & Laurie” sketch from the ’80s that I always like, it was in a restaurant, and they were serving a guy who wants to break up BBC, and make UK television more like American cable, and give everybody more of an opportunity to get on television, free to all. Understandable, makes sense, but they soon take his fork away and they bring him back a bag of plastic sporks. This is what you want, a lot of lesser quality programs on many channels, and not one perfectly good working fork. That’s kinda how I see a lot of television these days. Perfectly fine a lot of it, more of it but I also tend to see that I’m swimming through sporks looking for a fork. And as television and movies, I do think there’s a switch in freedom and quality that does indicate that people are moving away from film and to television, although I would argue that that’s as much movies faltering as it is television getting better. There’s more freedom in television, some television now than ever before, but, eh, that’s actually been that way for awhile. Technically there’s nothing on HBO that couldn’t be on network if they put it on at ten o’clock or later, they just aren’t doing it.

As to favorites, eh, I’m weird, well, if I do have favorites, I won’t admit them. That said, I don’t think of “Scrubs” as a favorite, but I’ve gone on this rant before elsewhere, but I’m not a “favorites” guy, I look at the quality before I ever look at preferences, and it’s cost me a few times, personally but I, I always believe that the distinction that people should make before anything else is between what is “good” and what you “like”, and like, is a bias, so I immediately discard it. The only time like ever comes into play when I’m analyzing is when I honestly have gone through every other piece of analysis, and even then, it’s just a tiebreaker. To me, I want to know why something’s good, tell me you like it, and i tune out, that’s a preference, and you’ll like something regardless of quality, so it means very little to me and I don’t consider, so I when someone bashing something, whether they like it or not, that’s almost indefensible behavior, ’cause quality isn’t really something debatable. I know we pretend it is, but it is determinable and measurable. I mean you can claim “Plan 9 from Outer Space” is better than “Citizen Kane”, it ain’t gonna be true. 95% of analyzing something, pretty much isn’t opinionated or debatable, now when you get to arguing whether “Citizen Kane” is better than “Casablanca” or “The Godfather” or something like, then that 5% of analysis gets a little more interesting, but I don’t consider personal favorites. Sorry, just not how I analyze work. Apparently that’s weird, but I was taught that, I figured everybody else was, until, you know, the outside world heard about it, but… (Shrugs) I’d still argue it better than taking your favorites as preferential over what might be good.

          • You can act like your taste has nothing to do with your analysis all you want, heck you can even actually believe that that’s true. Unfortunately it’s not man. I’m sorry but you can try all you want to say quality is not debatable or personal taste can be removed from your analysis but bottom line is……it’s not and it can’t. Quality is subjective and personal taste always plays a part whether you admit it or not our whether you are doing it subconsciously or not. also numerous times in this discourse on this page you have made comments to allude to the fact that somehow you have a superior skill set, upbringing or intelligence level….those aren’t good habits to get into in these types of debates and commentary just fyi

          • Um, no I don’t buy that. There’s a lot of stuff that’s great that I can’t stand at all a lot of it I actually did put on my list. But, yeah, I strongly disagree with this. If quality was really that subjective than at some point in the last 500 years or so, something would’ve replaced the Mona Lisa at the Louvre. A part, that’s subjective, yeah, but the more I think about it, it matters less and less. I can’t say someone’s untalented even if I can’t stand what they do, when clearly they are. Quality, for the most part, isn’t subjective. That’s like saying that somebody who’s a professional juggler, can’t juggle. No, I can see he can juggle and he’s worked at it for years, you know. How well they use those skills to the best of their ability and towards the piece as a whole, how well does the juggler use his skills, that’s a bit more debatable, but, yeah I get upset when I see people, really embrace the things they prefer or like, over the stuff that’s clearly better and good. To me, that’s a complete reversal on how to analyze quality and that’s just limiting. This is another reason why I say this isn’t a good time for television, especially with so many outlets and shows that, you’re no longer to go and sit and see what’s presented, people just look for the things they are already predisposed to liking. It’s limiting when you do that, but it’s encouraged now to seek out the shows that you’re already supposedly pre-disposed to liking. I find that frustrating and limiting. We don’t all have the same accesses to everything, we’re seeking out what we’re prone to seek out on our own. The fact is, you never know what you’ll actually “like” until you discover it, much less what’s good. I truly do tend to ignore my personal taste. How successful, I am, I think overall I’m pretty good at it. Doesn’t mean I haven’t occasionally rewatched a “California Dreams” when no one’s looking, but still, I’m not looking at it as something I like to watch anymore, so that’s an improvement.

As to alluding to being more intelligent, I’m not trying to. I just come off like that sometimes, I’m told. Yeah I wish I had something better to respond there, but (Shrugs) it comes with the MENSA card, what can I tell ya? No, I’m kidding about that, but I am trying not to do that and to listen intently to everyone else’s perspective, but I often don’t agree, and I try to explain why. That’s about it.

          • Except your Mona Lisa argument doesn’t work because its as much about the history of the piece and who made it , as it is as the quality of the product of why its there. As speaking with a brother in law who goes to Yale for an Art doctorate I can tell you artists often have very bad things to say about many famous artists and their work that appear in museums. (it doesn’t get annoying at all)

Being a professional doesn’t in turn make you great or good at what you do. Rob Ryan has been a professional defensive coordinator for decades now, I’m pretty comfortable in saying his pretty awful at his job. No matter what your status, history, or occupation you still need to execute.

Maybe its due to text as that can cause cloud someone’s true intentions, but You’ll do yourself a huge favor in life if you realize that everyone doesn’t have to think, absorb, debate, or determine the exact way you think they should. You talk about limiting, and that mindset will only go to limit your own perspective. I didn’t read, watch, or listen to reviews to reinforce my stance or disregard others. I tend to enjoy learning how others process films, and the reason they like or dislike something. Their opinions won’t change mine usually, but I also won’t disregard it either. I love your thoughts, your reviews are great, and well thought out, but they aren’t gospel. Nor are mine by any stretch of the imagination. No one’s opinions are, when someone acts like they are that’s when they lose me.

I look at a documentary like Leviathan. I personal love it, and feel its a great doc for reasons I won’t go into, but I also realize people are going to hate it for good reason. I don’t see how anyone can walk out of that movie and say this is in fact the true score of what this movie is. Because what unbreakable facts are you biasing that off of.

What are the non debatable elements you use to determine the exact quality of a show. is it providing the audience with what they want? Is it creating a show that anyone can enjoy any episode? Is it ignoring the audience and creating a show that will only appeal to a specialize few? Is it creating a show before its time? Creating a show of its time? Is there an exact pacing scale someone should follow? Can’t be too quick, or too long? What’s the right or wrong way to use your dialog? How much humor should it have?
            .
There are perceived great movies that Roger Ebert doesn’t like, and perceived bad ones that he does. Same for every critic, and everyone person. I’d hate to live in a world where Rotten Tomatoes has two scores 100% or 0% because we now have objective blue print to review media. Just sounds really boring to me. But that’s a subjective opinion I grant you .:)

          • I think I did pan “Leviathan”, but eh,- look I get what you guys mean in the general consensus, but on a personal perspective, eh,…. If you’re not going to go out and defend every perspective one has on something, I-eh, it doesn’t hold up. Look, I know people disagree about The Mona Lisa, I’m one of them, but A. the point still holds, historical context is apart of how you analyze a work too, and to some extent opinions are subjective, some more than others, but, I don’t understand, at all, treating them that way. If you’re not gonna go out on a limb, and really analyze everything about something if you can, then, what are you doing, just passively observing? Eh, you know, I understand that some aren’t gonna accept, see or appreciate something the ways I will, but I don’t like of idea of not promoting my perspective, and anybody else doing the same thing for that matter. I genuinely don’t think it’s good that people allow they’re subjective opinions to be the main basis for how they analyze art, of any kind, and I definitely think that it’s worth exploring and promoting my process. It doesn’t preclude disagreement by the way, just a higher level of it. It’s not assumption, either, you do have to prove one is talented. I’ve panned every Shane Carruth, ’cause I’m convinced he’s not capable of creating, an actual human character for instance (or tell a story that doesn’t involve all the characters unknowingly controlled by things outside themselves). If he can change my mind on that I’ll be ecstatic, but I’m not assuming anything, prove one’s talented and then I’ll look at how that talent is used. As to analyzing art mathematically, well,… yeah, it’s not necessarily mathematical, but I do disagree with that scene in “Dead Poets Society” where Robin Williams makes everybody tear up the part of the book about analyzing authors that way. Not that one has to prefer Shakespeare over Frost or whoever, you should still, understand where people come from with how they come to that conclusion. If anything, I find it makes it even easier to criticize and pan stuff that is otherwise generally accepted. I don’t know how you guys started misinterpreting what I’ve been writing as anything more than spirited debates and analysis, just because i analyze it differently, and because it’s my perspective, I think you need to present it as, one’s own gospel almost…-, okay, not gospel, that’s a terrible word to use there, but as assured as possible. I’m presenting an argument, and I’m looking for the defense to present a better or more convincing one. That’s all, I’m looking at the evidence and trying to read it, and you can read it differently than me, then, show me how to read it better. Even still, it’s-, you know to go back to “Leviathan”, eh, understand why some might disagree, I get, but just accepting. It’s your truth that you see it one way. This above all, to thy own self be true, it should be presented as truth, from you, it’s how you see it. That’s why I always present my perspective that way.

As to analyzing from an archaic perspective, eh, you know, that’s the thing, it’s not archaic a perspective, it’s just not the perspective of television. I mean, it’s not new, I doubt that people who loved John Wayne movies cared about “The Brady Bunch”, but it’s overly prevalent, and especially with all the availability of other outlets, it’s causing television to not be television. That’s what I’m more skeptical of, with all these shows and ways of viewing them, it’s not-so much that it’s analyze differently than before, but it’s analyzed in a way that’s, simply not television. It’s easier to avoid bad shows, it’s also easier to miss good ones, and frankly neither of those are actually good. There’s plenty of bad television that’s ingrained in our culture and mind that’s secondhand verbiage now, hell, I just mentioned one of them. And that’s a part of television, is seeing everything available, that’s just not happening anymore. We didn’t watch a lot of those shows because we liked them, we watched them ’cause they were what’s on, and a big part of it too. That’s the real reason I don’t like the micromanaging of series towards demographics, especially today, it shouldn’t be just that easy to avoid. Television at it’s core is supposed to be all-encompassing, and that’s not what it’s becoming, now it’s, literally everybody watching their own thing on their own computers. I mean, yes there’s more freedom (Although Jack Benny had just as much freedom as Louis C.K. has now in his time and there’s a few other exceptions.) but the focusing in on demographics, that’s what’s narrowing about it, even more than the availability of other viewing options (Although I’m only begrudging accepting those just apart of the world at large now too). I get it from a business perspective to lean towards some more than others, but especially on network television, it shouldn’t be this obvious about it. And I’d argue that because some channels offer freedom for artists, doesn’t mean that’s greater either; in some ways it’s much more difficult to be going after everybody possible and getting that while creating great television. As great as it is that we are getting great shows now, we got great shows in the past too and terrible ones then and now as well, but now it’s not more limiting than ever to an audience. Despite the great shows, I find that, that makes television and in many ways, us, a lot more worst off than we used to be. That’s why when television industry as a whole nowadays, I don’t see us progressing as others do. I’m not saying I wouldn’t be avoid watching “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”, but it should honestly, be harder to avoid it than it is.

          • You really come off as someone who thinks his own shit doesn’t stink. I went to your site, checked out your reviews and they are fine, they aren’t as good as you think they are. All I see you say is give evidence and your reviews are nearly all opinion on how things should be made the way you want. That and jesus christ dude paragraphs are your friend and not every review needs to be war and piece. A little less rambling would go a long way. Honestly man you come off as a person that needs to get over himself. You are not on a higher plain then everyone else. You just get way too high on your own supply.

          • That’s not necessary. I’m all for debate and disagreement. Personal attacks like this are taking things in a direction that is not needed. If you want to disagree with someone fine, but it’s not that difficult to be civil about it.

          • I guess I’m not understanding what you are saying. Correct me if I’m wrong but what I gather from your thoughts is there is a definitive answer to whether a product is good or bad. And those that don’t agree with that answer are only doing so because they let personal biases get in the way.

I’m not saying opinions don’t require evidence, just that two people can watch a movie or TV show, and provide equal evidence of what it is good or bad.

Look at your Shane Carruth example. You are starting with a subjective opinion that a movie is required to have a human character at its center. I’m sure you can provide evidence of why that’s important, as I good indicating why that has no impact on what the movie is actually accomplishing. If you need that in your films I get that, but what I
get from what your saying is that in order to argue the quality of Primer I would have to argue it has a human character at its center, because that’s the determining factor of why it’s good or bad.

The reason we are misinterpreting what you are trying to say is because you speak as your opinion as fact, or like you have some uncanny ability we all don’t and that’s why you think the way you do. You have talent for sure, but you’re not alone in that.

You may not realize but you come at viewpoints as if someone needs to perceive or evaluate something the same way you do, like the quality of TV today. You say provide evidence but I’ve yet to see you give evidence of why TV is better back then than today beyond TV doesn’t fit into the format you prefer, or networks don’t work the way you think they should. If they don’t fine, if that’s the way you want things I get it. But it’s
not the way things have to be. You keep speaking about quality of something, yet I have to see how a show’s demographics impacts its quality. You aren’t following through with your own requirement.

For me the bottom line is with TV today the talent is better at all fronts. The heights of TV today are greater than before, and we are able to create TV that is equal to that of film on every level. That wasn’t the case before. TV felt like TV because it wasn’t as well
produced, didn’t have the same level of acting talent, and was beholden to ratings. Yes there is garbage, and yes it could easy for great TV to get lost in the shuffle, as has always been the case. Personally I prefer living in a world where I don’t have to watch TV based on a specific day and specific time. It would be impossible for me to watch anything if that was the case. My questions is how much greatness is there. And how high does that greatness go. Awful stuff will be forgotten and go away like it always does. It’s not like the 70’s was void of bad movies, but its look at with such regard because of the amount of great movies and just how great those movies where. That’s what I see with today. A time where its impossible just to keep up with how much great stuff there is. Not an issue when everything at a specific day and time it was on.

You may think differently, or have different expectations of what TV should do. I respect that and would never state you have to have the same expectations that I do.

However, It’s as if you unwilling to realize that the way you prefer things are not fact, or completely objective. You act as if you evidence is fact, you ask for something better but it’s impossible when you unwilling to acknowledge the evidence you are using to determine the quality of something may be evidence that has no impact on someone’s view point. You attack a Shane Carruth movie based on what you expect from a film. Great love seeing how you interpret movies and what you wish to get out of them. If his film doesn’t met those expectations then feel free to explain why. My issue is your expectations are your expectations. don’t need a human character at the center of my film to enjoy it. I enjoy movies that aren’t character driven and can appreciate films trying a different approach.

What I gather from your responses though is that a viewpoint like that is not valid. And it’s only because I’m a casual viewer who doesn’t have the ability you do to perceive film. Maybe that’s not your attention, and I don’t think it is. But based upon the evidence you are providing that appears to be what you are arguing.

          • Okay, after two days before my computer finally started working again, I’ve long forgotten what I was planning to write in response, (Although I’m probably gonna end up turning the “horrible time for television” reaction/comment into my own blogpost eventually, and I’m definitely not signing off that because it’s more well-produced now, some of it, means TV’s better overall now) but yes, I think there is some misinterpretation of my thoughts going on, and yes, I tend to present my opinions as facts, ’cause that’s how I was taught to present them and argue them. That said, I also don’t think much of a fan perspective, so I do disregard it immediately usually. To me, not only does it play off as bias, which it is, but it often leads to a narrowing of one’s perspective and honestly I see more bad in that perspective than good and find it better to take a look at work outside of that perspective, and usually through a more educated prism. To me, there’s a distinct difference between “like and good” and too often, I see it confused for each other, and often the like completely dominant over the good, and I just disagree with that approach, if for no other, than I just don’t buy that art is as subjective as some say. It kinda feels like saying, “This turning on of the camera and recording of people acting and performing is equal to this other turn on of the camera and recording of people acting,” as, somebody who’s a film school graduate and does still occasionally work in the industry, I know for a fact that’s not true and there’s so much more to it, so when I see people treat it them as though they are and it’s only preference that distinguishes them, I see it as an affront to be completely honest. Maybe that’s why I seem more combative than I’m trying to be, but it doesn’t come off right in my mind.

Okay, I didn’t say I hated Carruth ’cause I’m against a non-human main character, I said, “He’s not capable of it”, there’s a difference. I won’t get too into all my theories on Carruth, but basically the way he uses the symbolic and tonal touches of his films and his outright refusal to create characters that actually are characters and not just people under others’ controls under others’ control or whatever-the-hell, make me believe that he uses though these techniques as a way of hiding the fact that he can’t create a human character or a typical story for that matter. Like I said, maybe his next film will prove me wrong, but two films in nine years and basically it’s like he never passed the first lessons of screenwriting, but someone gave him the advanced Final Cut Pro to use. I mean, Malick never has a traditional narrative either but he could easily do one if he wanted to, but Carruth, I don’t think he does and that’s why I’ve heavily panned both his films…. and my Carruth rant goes on from there, and I’ll save that for another time.

          • But by being so focused on presenting your point as fact, you don’t seem to be listening or in this case reading the point I’m making.

I don’t’ really care what you think if Shane Carruth. My point regarding your Shane Carruth criticism was that you were basing your argument on something you feel a movie has to have tobe good. My point is who is to say that is a requirement, or a movie can’t be good without that. As there are many critics, who I can only assume have an education like yours, who feel differently than you do. So if we are to use your argument that greatness of quality is without subjectivity than those who disagree with you are flat out wrong.

And that’s my issue. You are so caught up on the idea that you are above bias that you refuse to see how truly bias you are. You’re so caught up on the fact that you come at things from a higher perspective, what you don’t realize is you sound more narrow minded than anyone. Your entire argument on TV is based on your idea of the way TV should act. That is not the case. You don’t make the rules because you went to some school for a film degree. Sure you have tools to review something, but those tools have been sharpened based on your personal taste and preferences. Yes in order to state something is good or bad you need to provide objective evidence, but the final formation of that opinion will still be effected by personal taste.

If you wan’t to continue to think its not fine, but all I need to do is read your thoughts on something to see how you prove my point for me. I enjoy doing so anyways, so its a win win.

          • This is the biggest problem with your entire argument…you say “Television at it’s core is supposed to be all-encompassing.” …Ummm, says who? See you are working under this artificial construction that there are rules to what TV is and is not supposed to be. Just because you want everyone to be forced to watch the same shows every night and eliminate any show that doesn’t appeal to the ENTIRE family or doesn’t have at least something for each age/race/gender/maturity level/intelligence level/personal taste does not mean that’s how everyone views TV. What is wrong with someone knowing that they really really really enjoy science fiction, and therefore seeks out and watches a variety of science fiction programming? How is that somehow dumbing them down or lessening the quality of said programming that they are watching?

I understand the nostalgia for wanting a day, like days gone by where the entire family gathers around the ONE TV set in the living room after dinner and bonds over a good wholesome program. There’s nothing wrong with you liking that or longing for that…but that doesn’t mean that any other way people value or view television outside of that notion is wrong or evil. You keep saying that people are narrowing their vision because they let the fact that they ‘like’ something shape their opinion of it…yet your vision of television and what purpose it serves is more narrow than anything else presented in this entire discussion.

It absolutely blows my mind how you think you aren’t letting your personal taste, opinions and upbringing etc play into which shows you are saying are ‘good’ and ‘bad’ quality. Remember, we aren’t talking extremes here. No one is saying California Dreams or Beverly Hills 90210 is as high quality as E.R. or All in the Family. But for the hundreds of shows that fall in between those two extremes, there is not right or wrong answers as to how they should be ordered. You could take into account things like actors, directors, writers, longevity, ratings, awards, spin-offs, or a number of other objective pieces of information, but when it comes down to it, the difference between your #76 selection and your #77 selection is most likely almost 100% subjective and based on personal opinions.

          • You’re grading television today off an archaic principal. People don’t consume their media the same way they did in the 70’s and we have many more networks to choose from. If you were to suddenly limit the amount of networks to what it was in the 70’s you’d have just as good of lineups now as then.

Yes it’s a flooded market so you will get garbage TV, but it’s really easy to avoid. I don’t get how you say it’s hard to fine the great stuff. I tend to just click a button, and boom great TV.

I mean I long gave up on cable and still have access to all the best shows in TV now. I don’t care what networks catered to what demographic, that doesn’t then diminish the fact that there is more great TV than ever before. You say you only argue based on quality yet you ignore the fact there is no debate that the talent involved with TV today is far superior than ever before. That TV never came close to the heights that it does today. You argue that TV is more micromanaged, that’s just not true. Okay CW caters to a certain audience. Great, that’s a tiny piece of the TV landscape. Other networks like FX, AMC, HBO, Showtime, etc… give content creators nearly full control.

You seemed consumed with this idea that television is lesser than before because it’s only directed towards a certain audience, yet then on the same hand argue that when you review a show you only review based upon its quality. How do those points not contradict one another? How can you say on one hand your personal taste doesn’t impact your view point, and then use an element like a show’s viewership as a gauge to judge the overall quality of a show or the medium itself? Does 2001 lose points because if you were to show that to an audience of 100 people only 25 of them on a good day would actually like it? How does being liked by more people make a show better or worse?

TV, Movies, or any form of art isn’t a cut and dry business. Analyzing a TV show is not akin to analyzing the blueprints of building or a mathematical
equation where opinion is null and based solely in fact. No matter how great a critic someone is or how well versed in a topic someone is personal taste plays a factor, especially when you consider something like comedy which is hugely subjective. To act like your opinion towards (the show of the episode I guess) Scrubs is not affected by your personal taste is plainly untrue. Just because you find it humorous does not make it fact, nor does me not finding it funny make that in fact true.

To assume quality of art is not debatable is then to assume there
is a right or wrong opinion towards a given property. There are critics who have well-formed reviews of Pulp Fiction which completely bash the film with legitimate grievances, and then there are those that sing its praises as one of the best of all time. Both which bring up equal valued points. Yes there are extremes like arguing the worst movie of all time against one of the greatest,

To disregard someone else’s opinion that differs than yours as that’s just them allowing their personal bias to get in the way, where I don’t do that cause I only look at facts is odd to say the least. Yes there are extremes or arguing the greatest of all time verse the worst, but at the end of the day to assume your perception of a given property is not effected by your own personal bias is either you not realizing or unwilling to admit it.

Look at some like sports that has quantifiable factors like stats, metrics, etc.. that should give a black and white picture over the quality of player. Yet the greatest coaches and players of all time can’t clearly define how great a player Eli Manning truly is. So how someone can say there are non-debatable factors that determine the quality of an art form to me is a really does nothing more than limit the way you able to experience it.

          • Dangit! Dan had way more time than I had to form my response and said every single thing I was thinking in a much better way. This is getting weird and unusual but I 100% agree with Dan on every point here

          • That Scrubs is automatically a personal choice. Though I’m not a fan I think there is merit in ranking it based on critical response.

          • I don’t see how you can say we are in horrible time for TV. Sorry but TV has never been better. It’s a double edge sword I grant you, as with every Breaking Bad, Mad Men, True Detective you get a Real Housewives or Two Broke Girls. But its also never been easier to find great content, and for creators to get that content directly to the people.

There was a reason why being considered at TV actor was a bad thing, why true cinematic talent didn’t bother with the medium, because you were stuck with a limit amount of networks that had to worry about ratings much more than do today. From production, to acting, to cinematography, writing, the list goes on, the shows today are superior in every way. Shows don’t’ have to be predicable episodic procedurals that only stretch the medium just enough to keep people on board.

It was unheard of in the pre 2000’s era for a Academy Award Winning Actor’s next big project to be a TV show like it was for Matthew McConaughey. When a young director like Rian Johnson would look to a show like Breaking Bad to stretch his creative muscle as equally as film.

TV before could never touch film as a tool for artistic expression. It had too many, restrictions, and cooks in the kitchen to let great people be great. Now we live in a world where content creators can have creative control. Does that lead to more specialized content? Sure, but give me specialized over a broad piece of entertainment any day of the week.

          • “but we’re in such a horrible time for television” You are literally the first person I have come across with this viewpoint… I’m baffled on this one

      • I am a fan of Supernatural but honestly Seasons 1-5 were the best. Seasons 6-8 are terrible. Seasons 9+ have been going strongest IMO since Season 5. That being said, I think Season 11 is a bit much. I love the show but I think it’s time to put this puppy to bed after this Season end it.

    • Thank you for the awesome breakdown.

The one thing I’ll defend is Knight Rider…. it does deserve to be on the list. You say all the other cars were cooler… really? Could Magnum’s car TURBO BOOST….NOPE! It was shiny nd looked good, but it had no A.I. personality like K.I.T.T. Should Knight Rider have been higher…. in my personal opinion yes, but as far as what we are doing here having in the bottom section of the countdown is an ok place for it.

As I said in the ep I plan on revisiting Scrubs and seeing if I still laugh at it. Completely agree on Agents of Shit. LOL

      • Oh, I don’t know, just because it had a literal “personality”, it’s hard for me to defend “Knight Rider”. That’s kinda like saying, that “Knight Rider” was better and more interesting than “My Mother the Car”, technically true, but still missing the point. (And yes, just because can talk and do things, more than most cars doesn’t mean it’s better than a regular car. That said, I’ll take the gadgetmobile, you take KITT, and we’ll see who survives the demolition derby. 🙂

“Scrubs”, is quite genius, especially when you look at it as a modern version of “M*A*S*H”. On top of the other innovations, the first person narrative, through a voiceover, the cutaways, etc. (A lot of their ideas get credited to “Arrested Development” even though “Scrubs” was on first, that annoys me a bit too) but really the show is, doctors dealing with the everyday like of seeing sick people all day, through humor and their own psychoses. It’s the same as “M*A*S*H”, it’s just not on the level of war, so it’s not aiming there, and yet the show many times, becomes incredibly poignant and emotional despite that. I think it’s very underrated. People ten years from now, and gonna look back and wonder how a network show as inventive as “Scrubs” was, was not a hit show and barely registered and award season and will be dumbfounded by it.

        • If we are talking K.I.T.T. Season 1 or 2 before he lost his molecular bonded shell…. K.I.T.T. wins the derby. If we are talking after that and when the SPM was added well then it’s a toss up. But the Gadgetmobile really? That think would fall apart! Now if you wanna take the General Lee against K.I.T.T. that I could see being a closer battle.

Thanks for all the great comments!!!

        • Sorry but can’t disagree with you more about Scrubs, absolutely nothing genius about that show…unless you are talking about genius new ways to deliver toilet humor and jokes that are never funny.

          • There may have been hospital humor, but I don’t remember toilet humor, none that wasn’t relevant to the plot. No, the show has thousands of funny moments. It’s definitely stream-of-consciousness in it’s approach, which is also unique to that show, but it’s just flat-out funny-as-hell, but it’s also touching, and frankly some of the most powerful moments in television recently are from “Scrubs”. Every time I watch “Grey’s Anatomy”, all I ever think is it’s “Scrubs” but not realistic. (And, like twenty years late, that show always feel like it should’ve been on after “St. Elsewhere” to me, not “Desperate Housewives”.) No seriously, realistic. Cause it’s humor comes from that first instant of your thought process, and not necessarily what’s said, which is, correct, people do usually work their thoughts and words that way, and it just recognizes it, that in the toughest or most dire or depressing of places and circumstances, sometimes the most childish of gallow’s humor is what you come up with to get through it. Everything’s brilliant about that show. Even the last med school season, which yeah, they probably shouldn’t have done, but if somebody other than me had watched it…; it was funny; it would’ve worked.

    • I’ve seen about 15 episodes of “Scrubs” and it lacks something major…intelligence. Yes, there is an entire montage of toilet jokes in one episode. The characters are as dry as the Sahara desert…we have J.D.’s word for it that Kelso is mean, instead of being shown Kelso being mean. The jokes less subtle than a punch in the face…it’s more like being shot in the crotch with an RPG. And most of all, it is far too juvenile…it’s as if it was made for first-graders who giggle every time they hear the word “sex”. To put it in the same category as M*A*S*H is insane,

      • Oh, I think you’ve simplified the show too much. Kelso is shown as being mean, but he’s not a single-mindedly mean character, it’s also part of his job, and apart of his approach to medicine, and it’s like, I would compare him and Dr. Cox to-eh, the Berenger and Defoe characters in “Platoon” almost. (I know, easy comparison since McGinley was in “Platoon”, but it’s the obvious comparison) As to the jokes, um, again, I disagree. A. most of them are funny, and B. they’re juvenile, because they’re doctors and it’s the counter-reaction to having that kind of job and responsibility, especially for the younger doctors, the titular “Scrubs”, and what I particularly admire about the show, is how those big obvious, over-the-top jokes, that, yeah there’s a bit of “Family Guy” and other kinda not-so-subtle approaches humor to them, but they’re so big you end up seeing the great subtlety in the drama that comes from it on the other side. When things do hit them like a ton of bricks in real life, they don’t shy from it. And yes, the comparisons to “M*A*S*H”, are absolutely legitimate; it is essentially the same premise, doctors dealing with constant putting people together through childish humor and pranks, using comedy to deal with reality. No, it is on the level of a “M*A*S*H” unit in the Korean War, but it’s also not trying for that, it’s trying for the level of somewhat precocious obnoxious youth doctors out of med school, working at a regular second-tier hospital that gets eventually gets torn down by the end of the series. Yeah, they’re not going through a war, so yeah, they’re humor might be a little more juvenile, having not been jaded by something like that. This is why I think it’s also more realistic than most hospital drama series. It’s not aiming as high as “M*A*S*H” smartly, but it more-than-hits it’s mark where it’s aiming and that’s why it’s such a strong show. I think you guys see the show in front of you and whatever it is, being tuned out to it by something that doesn’t hit you on the surface, but the greatness of the series is how there is so much more going on then just the humor in the forefront.

        • Having the same premise as MASH doesn’t mean they are comparable in caliber of show. And no I’m not an idiot and don’t just see what’s in the forefront. I understand the subtext it is trying to go for. It doesn’t work. When the majority of the show is a glorified cartoon and then you try to switch gears to what you call subtle drama, which I see their drama as subtle as a 80’s after school special, it doesn’t work at all.

Just because they are doctors doesn’t make the ridiculous jokes funny. Sorry but Children’s Hospital is far superior at meshing humor into a hospital setting than Scrubs. The show is too much in love with itself.

          • Oh “Children’s Hospital” is a satire of hospital shows and other things, it’s funny, but “Scrubs” was going for something more. And, you know, I’ve bashed live-action shows for being too much like cartoons before, “Malcolm in the Middle” for instance, I always thought was a bit overrated for some for that ’cause it often never did give you a breather into something that was a resemblance of reality, but it works for “Scrubs” because of how it uses the perspectives of the characters and the voice over narration. It’s that approach to instantaneous thought, almost in the improv tradition, but a lot of humor is from the ability to capture that. And that’s realistic to me, we do think that way. We may not always say it, or have it shown visually, but emotionally we do and that’s a tough form of comedy, especially in live-action. If it doesn’t make you laugh, fine, but there’s thing that don’t make me laugh that are funny too. I’m not one that things all comedy needs to make you laugh out loud when it’s structured well, whether it’s “Nurse Jackie” or “Happy Endings” but if it’s a glorified cartoon, it’s because it’s how the characters often perceive the incident and many times it isn’t, and I disagree completely on how well they handled that contrast. I hate using the word “Dramedy”, but “Scrubs” knew exactly when and how to hit you over the head with reality, especially during moments when everything else seemed so outlandish, and that’s…, that’s life in real life, and that’s life working in a hospital too. I buy that this is the emotional feelings that these characters are going through and I found those sharp swings believable. They might not be the most likable characters or the ones we’d rather have as doctors, but I don’t like the idea of Marcus Welby clones either. It might not be the right comedy for everybody, but it’s right for this show and it does it with a good reason and it’s built into the series why it’s done that way and they do it well.

          • Sorry I won’t ever agree with anything positive about Scrubs. The way you describe it its like we watched two different shows. I like shows that meld comedy and drama. Scrubs just had bad comedy mixed with bad drama. In this case two negatives don’t make a positive.

          • Yea, I’m in the same boat. You can defend this until you are blue in the face. I watched the show on multiple occasions and don’t see it the same way you do. Its bad mixed with bad topped with more bad.

    • The big thing with this project is that classic debate of favorite vs best. Based on the lists I received it was about split on how people ranked their movies. Some went the more subjective route by giong based simply on what they like. Because of that we are getting like this episode. Some more of personal favorites like Supernatural or Saved BY the Bell, then those that are argue are better quality shows like Louie, Always Sunny, Homeland, and Andy Griffith. I kind of like it that way to be honest. On a selfish side it makes the record more fun because you get true reactions and surprises, and more importantly I like having a list that represents all sorts of fandoms and critical responses.

I agree Carol Burnett is way too high. Honestly I probably ranked it too low on my list. Mostly do to the fact I did watch much of it, and like I mentioned its not a show people were able to experience in syndication. Agents of SHIELD was a big surprise to me. No idea people thought of it fondly at all. Saved By The Bell I’m not surprised it made the list at all. In fact I was more worried it would be higher. GCRN tends to show a lot of love to childhood favorites like that, and we are well known for having a super hero bias. Although most of GCRN’s core crew didn’t vote for Agents of SHIELD. Oddly that one wasn’t just on us.

I could never get into Scrubs. I’ve tried but Zach Braff is like fingernails on a chalk board for me. I don’t buy him as a dramatic actor so every time the show was trying get serious and he was the core it never worked for me. I”m usually open to most tastes in humor but it didn’t work either. I still ranked it on my list because my issues I realize are more of a personal manner.

I like SCTV but I tend to prefer Kids in the Hall, and think its much more than okay. Similar to why I like Upright Citizens Brigade they are sketch shows that stand on their own more and don’t feel just like lesser versions of SNL. As cliche as it sounds the more alternative style helped shape my sense of humor.

Also completely disagree on Homeland. I do rank it as a great series. Much of that is due to its amazing first season which I rank as one of my favorite TV seasons of all time. It did keep that plot going longer than it should in seasons 2 & 3, but regained much of its footing i n season 4.

With Home Improvement I will again disagree. I do feel it holds up, especially compared to shows of similar ilk like Family Matters, Full House of Fresh Prince. Haven’t seen Grace Under Fire since the 90’s so on that front I can’t compare. Maybe its me allowing nostalgia to play too big of a role but watching I still highly enjoy it. Not sayings its an remarkably well written show. The relationships of tthe characters I still find charming. Most of it is because of Patricia Richardson honestly. She plays really well off Tim Allen.

      • If you want alternative sketch comedy, look up “Bizarre” one day, you’ll really get alternative. Last I checked it’s on Youtube, an for now, it’s the uncensored versions. You see, I saw the first season of “Homeland” and immediately realized half-way through, “Okay, this show can’t last more than two years, tops,” and that to me, as good as it was, although, I wouldn’t rank it as a great series, that really it what killed it for me. It was basically that had nowhere to go. It might have found it later, by abandoning much of that original plot, but when a show, is so heavily based on an initial storyline, these two characters, and is-he or isn’t he a terrorist, I was halfway through the season, already seeing the problems of seasons 2 and 3, and whatever ahead of time, and that’s something that’s such a high degree of difficulty, and frankly, you shouldn’t do it with television…-, Jason Alexander talked about this, in-eh, what’s-his-name’s book, um, Warren Littlefield’s book “Top of the Rock” about NBC’s Must See TV era and it’s dominance for 20 years, and Alexander talked about pitching show ideas nowadays, and he’s be pitching and the guy would say, “Well, what’s gonna happen in season three?” and Alexander would look at him weirdly an answer back “Well, I’ll come in here and ask for a raise, ’cause apparently we’ve had two successful seasons.” He’s right. “Homeland” in many respects should’ve just been a miniseries, and then was made into a series anyway. Sometimes that works, “24” is the best example, but they stuck to the one-season gimmick of the show, and that’s all that they really needed to stick to, “Homeland” was already doomed to me, in that first season. Maybe I just know the formulas so well that I catch it before others, but I was already seeing the problems of that series.

Yes, “Home Improvement” is better than those shows… (Well, oddly “The Fresh…” holds up better than it shoud but…) but that’s not the shows you compare it to. You gotta remember, the other side of ABC, there was the TGIF lineup, but the other side was the “Roseanne”, side, and that along with a couple other series, started two things, this influx of stand-up comics, sorta creating shows around their lives and characters, “The Cosby Show”, “Seinfeld”, “Ellen”, in particular, ’cause that’s also an ABC series of the time, but also, this focus on, eh, not lower-class, but definitely a middle-America tone and feel of shows. Technically, “Married… with Children” was first with this, but “Roseanne” took the realistic approach, and that’s where “Home Improvement” comes in. Comparing it to “Roseanne”, to “Grace Under Fire”, to “Ellen”, to-eh, “The Jeff Foxworthy Show”, “The Drew Carey Show”, it’s those shows that “Home Improvement” actually fits into. And it does hold up, especially the early episodes, once the kids grew up and they were doing things on “Tool Time” that were clearly stuff that nobody would ever do for their home or on their own, that’s when it loses it for me a bit. That’s where “Home Improvement” falls a bit to me. It’s still a great show, I was actually a bit surprised I didn’t find a spot for it in the end, but even though it was definitely the most popular of those shows at the time, time has sorta changed my perceptions of it, and a couple of those other shows hold up a bit better to me. If this was a Top 200, I would’ve found a spot for it, but ABC at that time, was a bit schizophrenic, kinda like NBC is now, only without the quality series, and you have to kinda separate, they had the kid sitcoms, they had these mid-America/stand-up sitcoms, and they had “NYPD Blue”, and BTW, this is the Disney network. It’s a little weird, but “Home Improvement” belongs in this other category of series and that’s where, I see it slipping a bit as time passes. Just a bit, I can’t stress that enough, narrowing to a Top 100 is hard; I get it.

And yeah, I’m somebody who has very little use for personal favorites of people, so I’m a bit worried about what some people put on there, but then again, trying to police that, is a-eh, very lonely and often useless quest, so…. except the worst, hope for the best, at least that’s what I’m looking forward to with the rest of this list.

        • I have not seen or honestly heard of Bizzare but I’ll surely check it out. Again doomed is a strong word for Homeland. Season 2 and 3 weren’t amazing, but I wouldn’t call them doomed or awful. At times even with their issues they were quite good, but didn’t have the same impact as season one. Also disagree with the notion you can’t do that with TV. I hate the idea of putting any type of perimeters that TV has to be one way or another. That mindset is why TV was such a secondary medium for such a long time. Creators and Networks were too unwilling to break from formula or create shows that may isolate audiences. You can never achieve greatness if you are worried about leaving audience members behind. One reason I enjoy Louie so much. He pays little attention to the say you are ‘supposed’ to make TV.

I don’t think you were alone in the worry regarding season 2 and 3 of Homeland. At time time of the first season release that was the biggest question I saw people asking, was how can the sustain this for multiple season. Honestly, that’s not something I at all care about all that much when I’m enjoy the season I’m watching. Especially today when series will end after two seasons because that was the original plan from the beginning. Also completely okay if a show switches directions completely

Regarding Home Improvement. I don’t think it was not aimed at nearly the same audience as Roseane or Married…with Children at all. They may have been representing the same culture and they both revolve around stand-ups, but tonally and the type of comedy are not very similar.

To me I compare to who those shows were directed at. If you did a venn diagram of the audiences of Fresh Prince, Full House, Roseanne, Home Improvement, etc.. I almost guarantee that Prince & Full house would share much more of a same audience with Home Improvement than Roseanne or Married…with Children. I don’t disagree Roseanne is a better show, I just never considered it in the same ilk as Home Improvement.

Regarding personal favorites, everyone’s list is guilty of it one way or another. Some more than others, but no matter how acclaimed or well knowledge someone is personal taste still plays a huge part.

          • Okay, I might have done something wrong by posting those Youtube Clips, eh, sorry about that, can’t seem to get rid of them. Meant to just the site’s page, not the videos. Sorry about that.

    • You made some very good points, and many I do agree with. I have nothing against Orange is the New Black. I tried to get into and bailed after 4 or so episodes. Regardless of how good it is, it’s too soon for it to be on a top 100 list when there are EASILY 100 shows more deserving. That’s my point with Homeland and some of the other shows.

Yes, WTF is Knight Rider doing on this countdown?!

“”Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”- Okay, this is bullshit. Shouldn’t be on the
list, shouldn’t have considered. Not a good show, at all,-, it’s yeah,
this is when it’s clear that some people have TV knowledge and some
don’t when crap like this makes it.”

This is the point I made in another comment. Come on. I’m not that old, but I know of shows that were made decades before my time and understand their relevance even if I never watched them.

        • Growing up, I watched it. But I haven’t seen it since, so I can’t speak to its quality. It was a pop-culture hit, but I don’t know that it was a critical success. The theme song, the car, and the premise were a lot of fun though. Still, out of the 80’s shows like this, I would expect to see Miami Vice or Magnum PI above it.

          • You are missing ONE big one that unfortunately I don’t think we are going to see that trumps them all! 🙁

      • Well, to be fair, “Orange is the New Black” is quite good, I’m through the first season and I gotta catch up on the rest so far, but yeah, I thought it was a long way off. Also, it’s always too early to tell with Jenji Kohan, people forget she made “Weeds” before this, which was a great show, but that show, eh, it didn’t get bad, but she can get bored quickly it seems, and suddenly the entire show can change itself multiple times over. I’m hoping the fact that she trapped herself into a literal prison, will help but yeah, “Orange…” is a show I’m a bit weary of putting the all-time great banner on it.

      • I disagree with something being too soon to be on the list just because its recent. We’ll get to this more in the next episode, but to me if your show is great I’m not going to hold off because its only a few years old. Because there are not 100 shows that are easily better than Homeland and Orange is the New Black. I could see tje argument for Homeland but if anything OISTNB should be higher. Its had three seasons, its not like its only half a season in.

I stay by the fact that TV today is far superior than TV pre 2000. The caliber of acting on down is the best its ever been. The best actors of today will appear on TV when that was never the case before unless it was on SNL or some other sketch show.

If this was a film list I’d be upset if it was full of current stuff compared to classic stuff. Being a TV list I think its not only expected, but the right call honestly.

  • If Agents of SHIELD made it and Daredevil or Flash don’t we riot lol. Am I the only one that never got the appeal of the Andy Griffith Show? I don’t see how it holds up at all. It’s way too simplearly and over simplifies everything.

    • I’ll be the first with torches and pitchforks to the riot party!!!! With Andy Griffith yes it was simple, but wasn’t that the point at the time? Give everyone Simple life lessons? Having it this early in the countdown is fine with me. Thanks for listening!!

  • Kids of the Hall is one of my all time favorite sketch comedies. Made me a Dave Folley for life, reason why I watched Newsradio.

  • How can Mike say Homeland should be lower and he has never saw it? How is that possible? That comment had me stratching my head. So far I’m happy with what’s been on the list. Except for Agents of Shield. That’s not even one of the best 100 shows of today let alone ever. Also Orange is the New Black should be much higher. Top 50 easy.

      • That something I don’t understand what you mean either. What makes you think Homeland should be lower?

        • I made my personal Top 100 to submit for the overall GCRN list out of shows I’ve actually seen. Even if I’ve only seen a few episodes of said show. Then I ranked them as far as where I thought they deserved to be. So for me any show I haven’t seen deserves to be lower than one I have So Homeland never made my list, because I didn’t think I could accurately rank it, yet, Saved By The Bell did make my list. On my list it was at 65. So That was my thought process. That clear things up?

          • I’ve listened to lists where people announce the criteria they had for making their lists, and I think that may be something to think about in the future. And to emphasize that the countdowns are the GCRN Favorite X so people don’t get so upset about the picks. Just a thought. I, for one, enjoy the discussions, and a lot of people probably do enjoy that aspect more than anything.

          • the list is specifically not suppose to be the “Favorite” it is about the best, or it should be. Yea we usually do go over the ‘criteria’ we all have for making the lists but with doing 25 episodes per podcast we had to streamline a bit for times sake.

          • With 29 people apart of the project we can’t really speak for everyone. The project was presented as the Best Shows of All time, and some clearly allowed personal taste to play a bigger factor than others.

          • Can’t you look at the acclaim and response a show received and conclude it should be on the list or not. My question though is way automatically say it should be lower because you haven’t seen it.

    • Surely people involved in the rankings would at least know of some of these shows and understand how critically-acclaimed they are from reading about or hearing about them? And age isn’t an excuse. You had to have heard of I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, The Twilight Zone even if you’ve never seen them. I’ve never seen Homeland either. Yet I know it is one of the top shows out there right now based on critical acclaim. I am fine with it being on the list and its placement because I think even though it has gotten a lot of acclaim, it’s too soon to say whether it will have staying power. Hence, why Agents of Crap should not be on this list. Arrow. Love the show. The first two seasons were gold, IMO. But it missed the cut because there are easily 100 other shows more deserving, IMO.

  • Awesome that this is happening to say off the bat. Enjoyed the episode and the discussion. Some did have some issue so far with the countdown. Saved By the Bell is an okay kids show or whatever you want to call it. Does not deserve to be in a conversation with great tv shows.I am glad you did include animation. Some of the favorite shows right now are animated tv shows. Archer, Bojack, Rick & Morty, are easily some of the best stuff I watch. I never got The Flintstones. It had some visual gags sure. Not much more. The humor in KIDS IN THE HALL is, for the most part, purely unexplainable, and sometimes it’s actually subtly disturbing–an experimental sort of comedy that best fits in the “either you get it or you don’t” category. When watching KITH with a group, the viewer response will invariably be split: one half will be teary-eyed from laughter while the rest of the gang will be hopelessly confused or frustrated, making condescending statements like “I don’t see how you think this is funny!” . I think its good enough for top 100. 76 is a tad high. Maybe 90’s would be better off. Homeland is spell-binding, packed with enough twists and turns to keep even a seasoned mystery writer wondering. Superb acting and a script that manages to avoid the usual clichés. Kudos to the writers! I found myself debating the civil liberties vs. national security issues that are so artfully posed each week.Claire Danes, Damien Lewis and Mandy Patinkin inhabit their characters. The producers also refrained from populating the cast with impossibly beautiful people who are unlikely candidates for clandestine operatives. The performances are nuanced and exquisitely wrought. They raise serious questions about the sacrifices both personal and physical that are required in the world of espionage, and the political consequences of using “heroes” for cynical ends.

A lot of talk about two things for me have no impact on a show. First being ratings. A show being popular does not make it good. Two and a Half Men is one of the most popular shows but its god awful. Please god don’t make it on the list. The other being Emmy’s or awards. The people who vote on the Emmy’s are well known just to pick the same people every year just because they like them. Long after shows have past their prime they will get nominated because the actor or actress did something good in their past, or just plain habit.

One thing that caught me ear was the honest reaction you all have. I like that you’ll call something out if you don’t think it belongs on the list, which yes is a little weird too since its your list, though as mentioned you had a lot of people contribute.

Any chance you’ll do like a listener or fan vote list? That would be cool to see.

    • I agree that just because a show has good ratings and/or awards doesn’t make it good. However, it should be part of the discussion. When trying to rate shows its important to bring in objective facts to provide why a show should be higher, lower, or not on the list at all. Emmy’s like all award shows have their issues for sure, but they do mean something.

    • I agree with most of what you are saying but 100% DISAGREE with your take on critical acclaim/ratings etc. Should it be the only thing looked at or considered…absolutely not. Should it alone be enough to get something on the list, most times no. However, it very much should be a component of how you break down shows. There is something to be said for a show that is actually watched and talked about and part of the water cooler conversation. A show is made to be watched and if its the ‘most watched’ show of its time or a majority of its seasons than that should count for something in a project like this. And regardless how biased you feel emmy’s or golden globes are it still is worth bringing up. I view it as less important than ratings but again these are only 2 of 6 components I considered when shaping my list and attempting to be as objective as possible. I’ll address this more in the next episode’s intro if possible!

      • I can see you point on the awards, but how does being talked about make a show good or effect the quality of the show? Is Vincent van Gogh not a great artist because no one talked about him at the time? Your show should speak for yourself. Being popular or getting high ratings rarely has anything to do with how good a show is. Baywatch was one of the most watched shows in the 90’s and probably ever. Would you put that on the list? Look at as show like Spaced. Was not talked about much at the time in the US. A lot of people still haven’t seen it in fact. But it is amazing show full of people who are now major stars. Would you not count that because it didn’t win awards or was talked about at the water cooler as you say. Even though if you go back an watch it now you can see how brilliant it is. Also ratings and being talked about aren’t one in the same. I remember everyone talking about Firefly but the ratings were awful. Then you have a show like JAG that had huge ratings, no one talked about it, and everyone has pretty much forgotten it. I can point to show after show that was popular but not good or memorable so that’s why I don’t think that should count for anything when rating shows like this.

        • I think we are arguing extremes here. I don’t think anyone would say an average show with great ratings is deserving or a great show with bad ratings is not deserving of being on the list. For me the first and biggest thing I looked at was quality of the show. How great did it get. Then I considered things like impact, influence, and at times popularity. It wasn’t a huge factor but if a show had an impact on pop culture because of its popularity that is a positive.

          • Right that’s my point. I think you are having trouble separating one of many contributing factors and THE only contributing factor. IN my mind Ratings should very much be one of the many components considered. Why? Mainly because is cold hard numbers. You say it should be based on quality…yes but quality after a certain point is the most biased component you can consider. None of us were alive in 1950 (or most of us I assume) so who are we now really to judge those shows accurately? Ratings and Awards can help with that. Even if you rewatch every episode, it may not resonate with our generation because we are watching it after the fact, and in a completely different environment. Ultimately any show put out there is put out there to ‘succeed’ and success by television standards IS ratings. It would be the equivalent of not using statistics when trying to judge a baseball player that no one living ever saw in person. Thats a terrible example but with time I could come up with a dozen better ones. Again is a minor contributing factor but how successful a show was (TV Networkds Standard of success), how much it was watched (any tv shows goal) and how much it was part of the popular culture of the time should 100% be a part of the discussion in the creation of a list such as this!

          • So let me ask you a question. You have Show A. Show A came out in the 1950’s at the time wasn’t well regarded, didn’t win awards, but now looking back on it it was ahead of its time and an overall great show. You then have Show B. Show B is a show you personally don’t like now watching, but has won awards and had high ratings. Which show would you put over the other?

          • I would need to know how Show A and Show B rate in the other half dozen criteria/aspects I look at when judging its overall worth.

          • That makes sense. I still feel it should be a factor. Shows are often popular because who is in them or because they appeal to a large audience. Jay Leno had huge ratings because his jokes were bland and easy. When he left no one really cared. Letterman though was unique and broke new ground. Never got close to him in the ratings. When Letterman left it was a big deal. because those who loved him really loved him.

  • Agents of Shield? AGENTS OF SHIELD! What is that all about. Agent Carter I could see. Agents of SHIELD is not as bad as people say but no way should be on this list. My prediction for the top 10: 10. Game of Thrones. 9. Daredevil 8. The Sopranos. 7. 24. 6. The Walking Dead. 5. Seinfeld. 4. Mad Men. 3. I Love Lucy 2. Breaking Bad. 1. MASH.

    • Solid choices! I think 3 of those for sure will be Top 10 – But the list has been unpredictable so far! Agree with you on Agents of Shield 100%!

    • People hate on AOS way too much. Same with Gotham. People watched the first few episodes, didn’t like them, and then went on to assume the shows didn’t get better when they did. Season 2 of Gotham has been great, and for my money is the best Superhero show on TV right now.

      • I agree Gotham has gotten better. Lets not go crazy though. Arrow and Flash are still way better. Arrow has rebounded strong this season and could be the best season yet if all works out right.

      • Sorry I have stayed with AOS and its not been good at all. Its gotten better but it being better only makes it average.

      • Gotham S2 has been on par with the best superhero shows on TV, including past seasons of Arrow. I find myself eager to see the next episode. They’ve weaving the storylines very tightly. To say it is possibly the best superhero show on TV right now…you may be right. Sure, I love Arrow…it’s doing better this season so far. Flash…it’s still doing well. But Gotham is killing it.

          • Flash is very strong. I finished ep 5, so I am still catching up. King Shark was awesome. It and Gotham are very close for me. Gotham has been a total surprise though. I am glad I stuck with it when I wanted to drop it and my wife insisted we keep watching. It is definitely the most-improved show.

          • eh its hard for me to get over some of the cheese and the terrible dialogue/writing…we still are watching it for some reason though

          • Terrible writing??? You are kidding right? The Flash as a character is supposed to be light hearted and upbeat, and fun. Until something dire happens to him or his family. I say this because there’s meant to be a bit of cheese in there, and it’s a good thing that there is. At least it’s not 90s cheese lol

    • Even as a lover of Walking Dead it does not deserve top 10. Top 50 Maybe. Its a fun show but lets not go crazy. The rest I agree on. Although All in the Family should be there some place.

  • NIce! This made my long trip into work so much better. I cannot get enough of countdowns especially when I don’t have to read anything lol. I hope to see some of my favorite shows make the list. Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Arrow, The Simpsons, South Park, and Community.

  • A lot of fun so far. Did not expect all the love for Golden Girls. Never liked anything about that show at all. Not geeky enough for me lol.

  • Why is Louie so low? The humor is of the best kind – dry and effective, and Louie faces some real problems that are common for all of us at one point – aging and going through tough (but hilarious) changes in life… Seeing THAT from Louie’s point of view is particularly interesting… The show itself is refreshing in the sea of mediocre popular boringness that we see today on TV and has only gotten better. Its way better than Modern Family. More people just need to see it.

My other issue is that Whose Line is it Anyway? is on this list. The UK version was much better and even that its just an above average improv comedy show that just got famous cause it was on TV.

    • Oh its better than an average improv comedy show. I’ve gone to a bunch and most improv shows are garbage to be honest. Unless you have a well known group that is well regarded and well trained. On a format stand point yes its basic improv. But quality was its very good. It has some of the best improvers in the business.

  • Isn’t this a nice
surprise. Didn’t realize this was happening and next thing I know look at my
iphone and have a gem waiting for me. I like this format more. Getting right to
it and 25 entries per episode make more sense for me. Plus I’m weird and like
long podcasts. Now the list itself. Hard to say anything about some of the
older shows. Anything pre late 70s is off my radar. I do have to back up Scrubs
though. What’s with the hate? I get not everyone’s comedy style is the same but
Scrubs was a damn fine show. Yes the ABC
seasons were a huge step down but that’s the same with a lot of shows. I’m glad
it made the list and it’s at a good spot.

  • I wonder with this being a geek top 100 TV list where other Joss Whedon shows will fall if Agents of Shield made the cut. Is Dollhouse top 50? Firefly would have to be Top 10. Buffy too even. Although I always preferred Angel.

  • I’m enjoying the countdown. The addition of Amanda is welcome to the countdowns, even though I often disagree with her picks. 🙂

I think the list is shaping up nicely so far. I’m disappointed at the placement for Andy Griffith. That is easily one of the most respected TV hits, and a pop culture icon. Oh, and what’s the hate for Scrubs? I understand it is quirky and some people don’t like that style of humor (just like I don’t like The Office), but I was surprised that no one on the panel seemed to like it.

By the way, some picks are just pure head-scratchers. I mean, Supernatural as a #1 TV show? And what is Agents of Shi! doing on this list? Maybe this should have been called a Geek Top 100 TV shows? Some shows aren’t appealing to me, but I still ranked them because they were relevant, ground-breaking, critically-acclaimed, are pop-culture icons, etc.. For instance, I don’t like M.A.S.H., but I expect it to be on this list, and it should be. Agents of Shield doesn’t deserve to be on a list that isn’t more specific (e.g., Top 100 Sci-Fi or Fantasy). Saved by the Bell…I think there are easily 100 shows more deserving. At least some people had the sense to rank Bob Newhart, Carol Burnett, and other classic shows that are still watchable today. In a few years, I doubt anyone will care about what happened on Agents of Shield. Supernatural seems like a decent show. I have seen the first few episodes, but it is not a top ten, top 20, or top 100 show. X-Files and even shows like Buffy or Angel were more relevant, critically-acclaimed, and resonant in pop culture and are more deserving to be on this list.

I noticed that I did not rank The Golden Girls on my list, and that was an error. I’m glad others ranked it. Again, not a show I watched, but I knew of it and believe it deserves a spot here.

Looking forward to the next podcast!

    • You need to watch Supernatural into it a while before making judgment. Seasons 1-5 and 8-11 are great. Seasons 6-7 are utter garbage. It has lasting power and better than some I’ve seen show up so far. It should be in the Top 50 at least.

    • To clarify no one had Supernatural at their number one spot. Amanda said it was her favorite show, but didn’t list it as number one however. Someone did list it as number 2.

I don’t disagree that many did allow personal biases to get in the way, and there are shows in the countdown that aren’t in the right spot for sure.

To be fair I didn’t require people to provide a reasoning for their list. It’s hard enough to make one. Maybe if we did it would cause some to look at it differently. My hope was by getting a bigger pool personal taste would be less and less a factor. I think for the most part that happened with some side effects. Like with you and Golden Girls it can be easy to forget a show. So what tends to happen is the shows people are passionate about almost always make the list. While others they didn’t see, had little exposure to, or are unaware of are easily left off. In that case many of the classic shows that aren’t talked about today.

I’ll say things change as the list goes on, and for the most part there are only a handful of shows that made the final list i think are 100% not worthy of the top 100. AOS being one of them.

      • Still, you understand my point. #2 or #1…anyone voting Supernatural that high obviously is voting based on personal favorites or bias. And that is fine if that is the intent of this list. I also made out a list as one of the contributors, so I know it is difficult to fit everything in or not leave shows out. I do like the discussions regarding the shows and seeing some surprises. It’s all in good fun, honestly.

As for shows today being better…yes, production values and the quality of the writing is better in many respects, but I am surprised to hear you make a blanket statement about TV now being better than TV before 2000. What shows were able to do with their limited budgets by creating memorable characters and stories despite their low budgets makes them even more of an achievement, in my opinion.

        • To discount modern shows, length of programming and the type is also a bias. So to each their own. There were shows that are going to be biased on the list and there are going to be ones that aren’t. By pooling them together it makes it so the bias more or less leaks out. Had Supernatural NOT been at #2 on a list, it wouldn’t have made the Top 100 which it most certainly should. Not saying it deserves the #2 spot overall but the point is overall they counterbalance bias with more official results once the pool is collected.

Yes smaller budgets have increased but so have the quality of shows. Do we get shows overall that are poor by design, yes but the quality shows more than outweigh the non-quality programs.

When making the list, it gets quite daunting trying to select only 100. Then again when making it your most memorable and favorite shows are going to be remembered for the list first. Followed by the ones you cared less for. I knew of some and forgot them in an honest mistake which may have impacted more of my 50-100 range but predominately my list consists of shows I actively watch or have watched in the past even to some small degree.

        • Yes I 100% agree placing something like Supernatural that high is based more on personal taste than overall quality.

I’m not saying all TV is better than before, or than I didn’t have classic TV shows in my Top 25, 10, or 5, because I did.

But overall yes I do feel TV is much improved. Its more than just production for me. its the quality of talent on all phases. TV of the past was stuck with episodic story telling that limited its scope and thematic depth. Sure there are exceptions like M*A*S*H ect… but overall you could never get something the caliber of The Sopranos (which I realize was pre 2000), The Wire, Breaking Bad, or True Detective. As we talked about in this episode something like NYPD Blue was looked at as edgy and true to life. Not that its a requirement for a TV show, but if I’m watching a cop drama I’m much more impressed with something like The Wire that does feel almost too close to real life.

Similar with acting and directing talent. Being a TV director is actually beginning to mean something. Looking at True Detective someone like Cary Fukunaga can shape 8 hours of TV to fit very extraordinary cinematic vision to create what was basically an extended film. Some of the best actors are choosing to be on TV rather than getting placed there because their careers in film is over. TV actor used to be a negative, now TV actors are often more respected than most film actors.

To summarize the highs are higher and more often. I’m not saying great TV didn’t exist previously, but as someone who prefers film over TV I always saw it as a lesser medium. To me that’s not the case now. In the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s the gap between the quality of film and TV could fill the grand canyon. Today they are on par with one another.

I understand we also live in a world with every rich or redneck family has a reality TV show, but I find it rather easy to ignore all of that. We have some of the worst TV ever I grant you and some of the best. You, take the good, you take the bad, … I feel like I heard his from some place before.

  • “Someone had Scrubs at number 10??”

    I’M SPARTACUS!

But seriously, for its first eight seasons this was a terrific show with a ton of memorable and diverse characters, even the bit players. Not to mention it found great use for Tara Reid, Michael J Fox, Heather Graham and Brendan Fraser. It walks a fine line between hilarious and tragic in the same half hour slot. I ranked it so high partly out of personal preference and the fact that it remained consistently throughout its first run.

I had no issue with Zach Braff here as this was the first thing I had ever seen him in, so I was in on the ground floor.

Thoroughly enjoyed this episode, and am really looking forward to the rest.

The debate about critical acclaim vs personal preference will always be there, but for me I left off some of the big hitter shows of the last ten-fifteen years purely because I haven’t seen them. I didn’t want to skew the list by adding shows purely because I felt I had to.

    Keep up the great work!!

    • I did not expect Scrubs to get the hate that it did. I did have it on my list, even though its not my favorite show because I do know there is acclaim out there for it. For some reason Zach Braff is nails on a chalk board for me, and I honestly don’t know hwy.

The creating of the list is always a debate. Do you put shows on there you haven’t seen just because they have acclaim? I can see the argument both ways on that. When I made my list the biggest thing I looked at was how great was your show. So things like number of seasons or year of release didn’t come into play that much. In a way I designed it as if I was releasing it as a stand alone article. So maybe a show I’m not well versed in may be higher due to other factors, While something like The Office which is one of my all time favorite shows doesn’t make my top 20 because I realize quality wise, importance wise, impact wise, its not has high as something like All in the Family.

At the end of the day its more of an exercise to get good discussion on a podcast and in the forums or post. Which I feel is happening so I’m happy with it so far.

      • And you’re certainly getting that. It’s been really fun so far, and Amanda definitely adds a great dynamic to the podcast.

  • I can honestly say that I had no problem in NOT placing The Cosby Show on my list. Even if Cosby hadn’t turned out to be a monster, I wouldn’t have placed it in the top 100. I found it more preachy than enjoyable.

My goal wasn’t to single out Cosby. There were just at least 100 shows I found more entertaining, and I also managed to avoid ranking such alleged “classics” as The Brady Bunch, Mork & Mindy, Gilligan’s Island, and most if not all of ABC’s TGIF lineup. #DidIDoThat?

Now Cosby’s live albums were gems. The stand-up performances that originated the Fat Albert character were among my favorites.

    • I think you commented on the wrong post. Love the feedback though, even if I strongly disagree with your take on The Cosby Show

      • I was replying to Mike’s dread over the placement of the Cosby Show, which was literally within the first five minutes of the podcast.

Tangentially, I was the one who put Carol Burnett at #1. I’m really glad I did now, considering where it placed.
