About this Episode

The crew from What's On Joe Mind breaks down JoeCon 2013 in Indianapolis, covering the convention schedule, special pre-con tours, the Night Force and Cobra Demolitions collector figure sets, contests, and guest appearances. They discuss what to expect from the weekend, why fans make the trip, and how to register for the event.

This is Jason Marsden, voice of Duke, from G

.I. Joe Renegades. You are listening to the GeekCast

Radio Network. Hello and welcome again to another

edition of the special geek cast radio Joe con

coverage and with me in this special edition

is the what's on Joe mine crew. What's up guys?

Hey Give me a second here. I'm just tweeting

something second. Okay. Yeah, I'm good. Hi. How

are you? That's not funny Chuck That happened

before he started recording Four seconds it in

the recording I don't know, maybe. He could edit

it in. He's a master. Steve, how's it going,

man? Good. How are you guys? Again. We're pretty

damn good. We actually got some new news today,

which we can go over if you want. But we're gearing

up for our convention. Unfortunately, it's in

Indianapolis, which sucks. How is that unfortunate?

It's really in the backyard. There's nothing

good in Indianapolis. No, Gary. It just sucks

for you. It just sucks. I didn't say who it sucks

for or sucks again. Well, that just means you

get to spend more money at the con. Yeah, that's

what I keep telling him. That's what I would

do. Now, we're going to make a good weekend out

of it. I'm not going to spend time at my house

at all. I want to be down there on site at the

hotel the entire time. You just don't miss certain

things at the convention. Speaking of the convention,

what is what what are the Basically, the rundown

of this year's events of the convention, or the

theme of it, actually. Go ahead, Justin. Well,

the conventions... They're a little hit or miss

as far as theme goes. Sometimes they have one

central theme, sometimes they don't. Obviously

the big celebration probably this year is going

to be the G .I. Joe retaliation film, which opens

about a week before the cons happens. It's going

to be a special screening of the film that looks

like probably Friday night. But beyond that,

it's just kind of a look at what products coming

out this year. There's going to be a lot to celebrate

with the Collector's Club Figure Subscription

Service. But really the best part of the convention

is just getting together with all the other G

.I. Joe fans. throughout the country. It's just

a great time overall, regardless of what figures

are going to be out there and what's happening

in the geological world. But this year is going

to be something a little special, just because

they've got the big movie coming out, and I think

hopefully that will get a lot more attention

to it from a mass media standpoint, and it should

be a blast. Awesome. What is the figure sets?

Do you guys know anything about what's going

on as far as that's concerned? yep, they've got

um, it's a nocturnal fire is the name of the

convention set and most Well, well -educated

Joe fans as soon as they heard the word nocturnal

figured it was probably something to do with

night force back in 1988 89 Toys R Us did an

exclusive set of Repainted figures called night

force which took some popular GI Joe characters

repainted them in somewhat subdued paint schemes

a lot of black a lot of grays, a lot of browns,

and called the Night Force, which was a little

unusual because back in those years, the figures

were generally pretty bright, you know, a lot

of yellows and purples and blues and stuff, so

that was kind of a departure for them back then.

And the Night Forces remained a really popular

sub -team for GIU ever since, mostly because

the colors were so bright back then, people really

liked having some more muted tones, some more

realistic color schemes. So the Collectors Club

brought back Night Force in the... big way, giving

us a lot of fan favorite characters from that

original Toys R Us run. Characters like Charboil

and Spearhead and Max. Repeater, Psych -Out,

those are all a bunch of characters that are

going to be coming along with the Nightforce

colors, as well as Hit and Run, which was a character

that had never appeared in Nightforce before,

but the Collectors Club is doing it in Nightforce

because I love him and I rule the GHO community.

Chuck, take a shot. Hit the dump button hit the

dump button And Justin somehow has the ear of

the club we still have yet to figure that one

out And they're going up against the Cobra demolitions

team, which is going to be headed by Cobra Mike's

got to say a Cobra mortale He's got that Latino

vibe going on there. I am the SOS Latin heartthrob.

Yes. They must be his Latin heritage, I guess

and Cobra Letal is another one who were actually

coincidentally enough originally we said we had

our own brochure read along we had mentioned

that Cobra Mortale was based on Argentinian Brazilian

I can never remember one of the two and then

but it turns out they're actually they're actually

decoing him based on even rarer white repaint

of the Cobra mortal which actually came out of

Venezuela so And we got some frag vipers and

saw vipers to go along with them, which were

some popular... FRAG VIPER! Nice. Mike, you're

getting me a little excited over here. I gotta

cut down that Latino heat. Well, you know. That's

why I'm here. THE LATINO HEAT! I was waiting

for Freak to say something. Yes. Nice. Supermortal

was from Argentina, by the way Argentina. Yes.

Thank you. Yes. I get my Brazilians and my Argentinians

mixed up sometimes and you would piss them off

No, and if they heard you say that I know for

real good thing. You're not a you're not popular

out of the country Justin I'm not like Chuck.

I'm not huge in Japan But Zynga Yes, so I guess

give me a rundown and some of our listeners the

the rundown on the events of Joe con this year

Want to take that mic? No, you go ahead Well,

I don't have that I don't have anything open

right now I just got in the door so Show prep.

Show prep. Some of us have jobs. Actual jobs.

I have jobs. So do I. So you have careers. Is

that the difference? Yes. Well, actually, the

show starts off even before really the show itself

kicks off. There is the pre -show portion of

the convention. There's some pre -con tours and

classes that go on starting on Wednesday, April

3rd. People will be able to take attendees that

want to go on this particular trip Can take a

trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and visit

the grounds go to the Hall of Fame Museum after

that they go to the the Dallara race car factory.

Dallara makes chassis for the Indy Racing League

and other racing series. And you can see how

a chassis made actually right in one of the two

seater Indy cars and play some simulator games

that a lot of the drivers use to train in the

off season and some of the simulators. So you

can do that. That's $100 per person, but really

that's a full day and it's a great time. Then

on Thursday, It's a little bit of history day,

a little bit of military history and Indiana

history. On April 4th, we'll start with a trip

to, there's a private armor museum. A guy outside

of Indianapolis has just been purchasing up surplus

military armor and been refurbishing it and putting

it out on display for the public. And he'll be

going there for years now. Get ready to attack

the government. Yes, it's the militia. It's the

Crawfordsville militia. It's one dude with like

eight tanks. That's about, well, that's about

eight more tanks than my Westfield has, so. But

you get to do a trip out there and then they'll

take a bus trip all the way not too far from

my house to Connor Prairie. And Mike can speak

a little bit on Connor Prairie. I think he had

a family member working there. But basically

it's a, it is a locked -in period. uh... historical

theme park and it's locked in the eighteen thirties

and everyone talks and dresses and acts like

in their there in the eighteen thirties and just

about every school kid uh... well mike didn't

because mike actually moved here after the age

of people that uh... went on field trips period

uh... they tried about every school kid visited

connor prairie once in their scholastic or uh...

pre Pre -high school scholastic careers put it

that way but Mike Anything special about Connor

Prairie that you could mention since your sister

used to work there. Well, I know that they they

They don't they don't take kindly when you show

up early to pick up your family But but no besides

that I mean it's it's really cool it we we I

we've been teasing it the last couple of shows

But it's actually for what it is. It's it's very

good It's very accurate. They do their best to

keep as much historical content in there as they

can You know if you're bringing the family definitely

recommended Especially this time of year as opposed

to going sometime in the summer when it is just

as unbearable as the pioneers had it Yeah, but

but really it's it's it's it's a fun way to spend

the day if you've got the the wife and kids around

and and need something to take up an extra day.

Yeah, that's $75 per person. Then starting Thursday,

which is that evening, is that registration night

or package pickup night. Toys R' Us is sponsoring

a Creo GI Joe build -off. There'll be two teams

of 15 people per team, or a total of 30 folks

overall. So those 30 folks need to register early

to get in on this. It's $40. But they'll do a

build -off to build a G .I. Joe set or a Cobra

set. Not quite sure exactly on the rules. They're

kind of vague here, but winners can win some

of the new G .I. Joe Krios. Which, knowing Joe

fans, is probably the only time they'll actually

get those. Boo, Gary, just in the fandom. Boo.

Boo. At least people actually want the G .I.

Joe stuff. You know what the G .I. Joe, the official

G .I. Joe Bird says, right? Cheap, cheap, cheap,

cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap. Anyways. That joke

got got just as much response now as it did when

he used it a couple of months ago. Who's your

bird? Who's your bird? Have you ever heard the

African scissor bird before? No, no. Mike, you

heard that? No. OK, it's cut your cock off. I'm

afraid of where this is going. Cut your cock

off. There you go. Nice. I swear to God. It's

not us, Gary. It's actually not us. But do you

guys know the word? No, Chuck. No. Gary, you're

going to set this precedent. Yeah, I'm killing

this thing already. I'm not going to let Chuck

bring it down all the rest away. Friday night,

after registration, there will be a group screening

of the G .I. Joe movie that will cost everyone

25 bucks, but it will include an adult small

drink and popcorn. And it's about a four -block

walk down from the JW to the theater in Circle

Center Mall. On top of that is the standard contest

that we'll have at the show with the Frank and

Joe or the custom contest, small diorama contest,

medium diorama, photography contest, costume

contest or otherwise known as the James Cavanaugh

Jr. Memorial costume contest as our own noted

author that is on our. One of our substitute

co -host wins this contest every year to the

point that they actually changed the rules to

make it difficult for him to win the next year.

This year, the rule change was he was actually

with some of his friends, some of our other co

-hosts. They had Jay Hunger was in that one.

I'm just going to take credit for them all. Yeah,

Jay Hunger and George Greeno was in that one

too. And they were all dressed as Cold Slither.

And they won the contest by a landslide. But

they were all judged upon as a group. Well, this

year, if you come as a group, you're judged upon

individually. So once again, the What's On Joe

Mine staff has far reaching tentacles into the

legalities of Joe Khan. We are evil. But the

actual sets this year that are available, the

two sets, there's a 12 -inch set and a three

and three -quarter set. Both are kick -ass. We've

talked about the three and three -quarter set.

The American Hero package is $360. The Generals

package, which is the 12 -inch set, which definitely

has a James Bond vibe to it. Maybe I'll let Justin

speak a little bit more to it, because it's very,

very cool. That's $330. And if you want to just

show up for the day, that's General Admission.

And that's looking to set you back about 15 bucks

or so, but that really just gets you into the

sales floor. Not much else really. So if you're

looking to partake in all the seminars and panels,

all the contests, meet some of the guests. Certainly

casino night and do some room -to -room trading

You might just want to make a full weekend of

it Get one of the register forget one of the

larger packages and come on down to the JW Marriott

in Indianapolis The JW Marriott is an awesome

hotel probably one of the best hotels a joke

on it's ever been in period and it's hard That's

in my dare call at the top of the line. Yes Awesome

Jesse you want to talk about the 12 -inch set

real quick? Sure, yeah, the 12 inch set is it's

kind of it's interesting what they've been doing

with the 12 inch stuff for anybody who's kind

of a fan of the real American hero Mythology

for GI Joe, you know the 12 inch stuff came well

before it, you know the classic Standard GI Joe

figures to the adventure team and so on the club

is doing something really interesting and they're

kind of tying these these loose ends all together

the adventure team sets over the past few years

have definitely kind of made a transition between

the 12 inch line and the real American hero line.

And that kind of continues this year. We're getting

an assault on Black Dragon or Black Island. Hold

on, hold on, hold on. Lost my page. Yes, the

adventure team secret secret mission to Dragon

Island. Sorry. The Secret Mission of Dragon Island

is actually introducing in the Adventure Team

universe for the first time the character of

Black Dragon, which is a character that the Collectors

Club themselves actually debuted in 2003 with

an Operation Anaconda three and three -quarter

inch set. So they're kind of linking the two

universes together here. And the coolest thing

really about this Adventure Team set is that

it comes with a 12 -inch figure that's got a

tuxedo he can wear, and then a jumpsuit on over

it. Really calling back to James Bond, how he

used to parachute in from an airplane and then

take his gear off and have a tuxedo underneath

and just mingle in with a bar. And they're kind

of doing that same thing in the Adventure Team

set. It's a very unique, very cool idea. And

it manages to kind of meld all these different

things together from Black Dragon, the adventure

team, real American hero, and a little James

Bond infusion too, which is pretty cool. Secrets.

Nice. No, that's that's very, very cool. I'm

unfortunately not as knowledgeable of all these

different figures or their backgrounds as you

guys, having heard what I have heard. It does

make me want to know more As to some of their

backgrounds We are the itch on the underside

of interest yes, yes What you should do Steve

is abandon all of their toy lines and get back

with GI Joe You know you want to Hmm I don't

buy toy lines. I like to read comics though There

you go, Joe is revamping and rebranding this

year. So That's good news. It's always good to

jump on early when you do a revamp or resource,

otherwise you're just confused as hell. Yeah,

I did that with the DC New 52. Otherwise, I'd

lost interest in it for a while and tried to

jump back in. I'm like, I don't know what's going

on, so I waited. Yeah, that's cool that GI Joe's

doing that now. There will be special guests.

At least I got three special guests announced.

For now. For now, I'm sure they will have more.

They always tend to have more. Larry Hama, of

course, really needs no introduction. The godfather

of... I thought you meant you, me, and Justin.

I don't know. If you look in the... Where is

it? It says special guests, and they'll actually

say... I'm gonna find it here real quick. Yeah,

the first page... on the panels, a panel of seminars

led by special guests and experts in the G .I.

Joe community. So I think we've just yet to be

formally asked. That's true. That just makes

us know it all, not experts. Call whatever you

want. I call it semantics. That's how you know

that Chuck's not going to be there. Oh, that

was low. It's a low blow, Justin. Sorry, Chuck.

Also also going to be on hand and he tends to

be a staple last couple conventions an interesting

guy from the the original Hasbro marketing team

the marketing manager from the early 80s Kirk

Bozigan he is the likeness of Law the figure

law of law and order but if you're Mike the likeness

actually is Johnny bench. All right. There we

go. Johnny my Hall of Fame catcher Johnny bench

and Maybe of interest to you Steve since you

guys are big into voice actors Mary McDonnell

Lewis voice of Lady J will be on hand from the

old Sunbow series. Oh, wow. Yes, nice So those

are the three announced guests so far, you know

in the past Mark Palomo He's distinguished author

author Mark Palomo. I'm sure he would probably

show back up There's been some rumors of some

other voice actors Who have hints already appeared

on our show at some point have been probably

asked. We don't know that for sure Who knows

any any number of? Other celebrities they could

be asked we're hoping kind of maybe they'll have

someone there from the movie But that might be

asking a little too much But they did have someone

from the rise of Cobra there when the rise of

Cobra came out So, you know, I'll take a you

know, one of the lesser -known actors to be at

the con. That'll be kind of cool I'm sure it

won't be The Rock. Or Bruce Willis. Definitely

not Bruce Willis. We will have Todd Jordan in

attendance. That's true. The owner. And John

Armijo, too. He's just the operator of Kokomo

Toys, the owner. He's the hired help, yes. Yeah,

but wasn't he a photographer in the White House

scene, the White House press conference scene?

Oh, that's cool. He went down to Louisiana to

film that, and he got... He got right up close

and personal, and the great thing was is after

everything was done, he's driving, he's texting

me all these things. Here's what the president's

saying, here's the plot. It was a good time.

So he gets to have his millisecond of fame. He's

already been in the trailer a couple of times

because they showed him the scene. So a couple

of milliseconds of fame. More than me, anyways.

I'm jealous. That's right. Who could blame you?

I hate when I'm jealous. Nice so so what are

each of you that are going? Looking forward to

specifically of the con itself Come on Mike well,

it'll be a good opportunity to get out and record

a few episodes without Chuck But sorry Chuck

I couldn't help it He sees lost he's gone back

to sleep. I think he muted his mic. He's gone

But but no I I'm not quite the grizzled Convention

veteran that Gary and Justin are this will be

my third one as opposed to you know Gary who's

been to about 28 11 and Justin who's been to

24 9 but I don't know. It's always fun to just

be able to go into a room with a few hundred

other people and just be that much of a dork.

And you just know everybody in the room is there

for the same reason. It's a good place to be.

Yeah, I think I speak for most toy fans in general

and GI Joe fans specifically when I mean obviously

during most of your life You're kind of sharing

Sharing your hobby life with your real -world

life and have to sacrifice a little bit of one

for the other at any given time You know you

got job you got family you got other commitments

and for that one weekend out of the year you

just say Screw all your other commitments and

just dive 24 hours 24 7 into GI Joe, which is

really really fun You got a bunch of other guys

there who are eager to do the same thing and

when I say 24 7 it practically is I mean you're

getting a couple hours of sleep a night here

and there We had to remind Justin. He had kids

last year Yeah, but anyways so so it's always

a blast, you know, you're going out drinking

at night and having having a good time with your

friends and waking up at the crack of dawn to

go take pictures of toys and it's just, it's

a really fun time. Nice. I'm looking more, this

is on my 11th, like I said, and to me, I don't

care what the set is. I'm going to get the set.

The set could be Dreadnock Rampage 2. I'll probably

show up anyways. Yes, I was waiting for Mike

to say something the worst concept ever but anyways,

amen They could have that and it could be in

the worst location ever, you know, it could be,

you know Indianapolis again, whatever I'm still

gonna be there because It's about the only time

well, I actually I get to see Mike more often

than not just because he has family here But

it's the only time I get to see Justin. It's

the only time I get to see other friends of mine

in the hobby and you see them for about four

or five days maybe and then you don't see them

there for another 360 plus days. So that's kind

of what I'm going down there is friends and -

Or longer if you don't get to go every year like

cushy $80 ,000 a year jobs like Kerry. Yeah.

Just to see friends, camaraderie, good times.

That's what it means to me now. And I think anyone

that really goes because of the set or goes and

just stays in their hotel room or goes and shows

up for a day is either getting a preview and

not getting the full experience or just wasting

their money by just not experiencing anything

at all. So that's kind of what I'm looking most

forward to for this year. And being a good host,

even though I do bitch and moan that I don't

want it here. I am a proud Hoosier. I am a proud

resident of the city of Indianapolis. So I want

to do my part to make the city look as best as

possible. Justin hates it just because his teams

can't win here. Definitely, definitely awesome,

guys. Just as a brief overview, what would you

say the top five things are for people to be

interested in at the Con? Obviously, camaraderie

and coming to the Con and experiencing it is

always going to be number one. What would you

guys rate just below that? Seeing all the new

stuff from Hasbro. Yep. Getting the skinny from

Hasbro. Getting their ear, actually. You get

to actually talk to them. Yeah. I mean, you can

meet the design team. You can meet the marketing

team. There's all kinds of folks there. Last

year, of course, everybody heard us. We got to

get on the air with John Warden and Darrell the

Priest. And just the whole the whole lot and

and or no Darryl wasn't wasn't there on our interview,

but but still we had the whole design team on

We got to talk to him a whole lot anyway, so

it didn't it just felt like he was there but

But you know, maybe this time but you get to

you get to find out what's going on with the

club You know get it get a little bit of a lead

on what's coming from them in the coming year

The set itself is a big draw You know the first

time I went it was all about the set Didn't realize

till after that that you know There was some

other cool stuff going on that were good enough

reasons to go on their own as well The sets kind

of the worm on the hook as it were But it's still

very legitimately a good reason to go You know

and even just the opportunity to get out and

see other parts of the of the country, you know

This this it pops it hops all over the whole

United States year. Yeah, how about that? Yeah,

I? Hadn't been to New Orleans before last year.

Well, that's true. I like going on but yeah,

the JW's 45 minutes away Well granted, but I

hadn't been to I hadn't been to Atlanta Atlanta

before I went to Atlanta back and you know, it

was sick So five whatever year that was. Yep

So there's there was lots of you know, there's

lots of opportunities just to get out and and

see some different things You know even outside

of con time I'm kind of looking forward to this

year as well going to the movie and watching

Retaliation with hopefully hundreds of other

crazed fans definitely That'll be a blast. Yeah,

and again recording some shows without Chuck

Waiting for it Yeah, he's like screw you I'm

not gonna give you the satisfaction wait you're

talking about Joe con If it was if it was bot

con he'd be in oh yeah, hell yeah, he'd be in

WrestleMania or something Russell con Nice so

Yeah, obviously lots of stuff going on, lots

of great, great content, lots of great figures.

Some of you were fortunate enough to be close

enough to the event. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Hey, if

it wasn't that close, if I didn't have family

right there, I wouldn't be making this year.

I've had actually people tell me they brought

the con here because of me. That case, you're

screwing with me. Must appease the god so always

in your Always in your own mind there Yeah, yeah,

and I think they're screwing with me. Anyways,

keep keeping Gary happy keeps the pipeline to

the slow boat from China happy Well, you guys

are the number one GI Joe podcast by far By far

so they do have to appease you to some extent.

Oh, we've been very good to the club. You've

been very good to the club Yes so Justin's kind

of a prick Registration is not open yet in case

anyone is wondering at this point At the time

of this particular recording, which is the 21st

I don't know if you're when you're gonna exactly

post this but it's not open yet But if you you

hear this and you're interested Go to GI Joe

con comm and pay attention to the page and they'll

tell you when registration is over you can Make

your reservations at the hotel now 139 a night

at the JW is a freaking steal those rooms normally

are 300 bucks a night That's how yeah, this is

this is pretty much a five -star hotel So 139

a night and even if you think it's expensive

room with somebody split your cost do whatever

you need bring the cost down That's fine Great

room great hotel great facility So you can go

ahead and make your reservations there. You know,

it's gonna be they haven't I'm pretty sure at

this point guys are not going to change the date

like they did last year. Of course, I am talking

about the club, but I'm feeling quite certain

in my bones that they're not going to change

the date. You can probably go ahead and buy your

airplane tickets to Indianapolis as well and

make those ahead of time. Once registration comes

up, have your credit card ready and start ready

to get yourself on record for showing up to JoCon

2013. Awesome, awesome. And we look forward to

hearing more from you guys about the convention

Not only on the event or at the event or all

the way around it Yes, we definitely plan to

we did three shows last year We used to have

the plan to do a couple this year. Maybe something

special. We don't know yet We don't want to jinx

it don't want to tell anybody really what it

is Publicly right now, but if we be able to pull

that off that would be extremely awesome But

we definitely are going to have regular what's

on Joe mine coverage of an event and that will

be the three of us and maybe a substitute host

such as a noted author James Cavanaugh or Maybe

a Kevin Watts or something like that will have

join us as well. Our old host Greg will be on

hand as well He might join us as well. So who

knows? But definitely the three of us. We'll

call it a rotating cast of Joe Luminati. OK.

Call it what you want. We'll be there. We'll

definitely be producing shows. And we want to

thank the GeekCast Radio Network and you, Steve,

for supplying us with some content and making

sure that you get us on and seen on the network

so people can listen to what we have. Yes, no

problem, guys. Always love to help out with the

fandoms and with you guys because you guys are

freaking hilarious. Thank you. And informative.

Thank you. Yes. Always enjoy the show. Definitely

looking forward to what you guys have in the

future and what you guys could possibly maybe

have at the con. Secrets. Yes, secrets. Secrets

process. Oh very good. Thanks That's um, that

is really good. Yeah, that is really good. That's

not just that's just gotta give that gotta stop

and give that it's due You've really been working

on that haven't you Chuck What's that I was trying

to give credit to it for to Chuck but he's not

paying attention he's He's sleeping at the keyboard

with his Jack Daniels and Barbara's sitting on

him or something It's a cat So before this turns

into a train wreck Good thing we don't actually

Barbara's not home this evening so All right,

then and it took talking about a cat to bring

him out of retirement. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah Joe who

gives a shit? I Mean I'm not gonna acknowledge

all the shots taken at me, you know, it's just

you know cyber bullying Yeah, you know cyber

bullying, you know, you love it is what it is

Anyways before this gets into a train wreck Thank

you guys again and yeah, it's already run that
