.com Top 10 Comedy Films Hello and welcome to

episode 42 of Geekcast Radio. I am one of your

hosts, Steve, Joe and Mike. Joining me is Steve

Megatron. Hello. Hello. Movie revolt Dan, hello.

Hello. Booth Ninja from XRG, Off the Cuff, whatever

the hell they're calling that show this week.

You sound so enthusiastic. And of course, Optimus

Solo is here to tell us that we are counting

down our top 10 comedy films. Last episode we

did the action films, and now it's time to see

who is actually funny in this podcast. mostly

since 1970 onward, which was the stipulation

that most of these lists had. And then we compiled

points and votes and all this other stuff to

come up with our top ten. Anything that got a

vote that didn't make the top ten, we will talk

about in the kind of introductory honorable mentions

section. But before we get to that, before we

think about any actual films, I just want to

throw a question out there to you guys and see

what you would say. If I was to say that we're

coming up with a top 10 comedy list, and you're

not thinking necessarily any specific films,

but more so just comedians, then I'll start with

Dan. Who comes to your mind as someone you would

expect to see represented in a top 10, top 20

type list when it comes to comedies of all time?

Well, if you're talking actors, the first person

that comes to my mind is probably Bill Murray.

Just because he's been in so many great... comedies

throughout the 80s and 90s, even 2000s. If you're

talking about writers or directors, probably

Lee Mel Brooks. I think he's a comedic genius.

He's been so influential. Those are probably

the two biggest names I would suspect would be

on that list. Mine always goes with their time

period. If I'm thinking about old school people

and people that just really made me laugh, I'm

thinking like John Candy and Steve Martin. Those

types of guys if I'm thinking a little bit more

current I'm thinking like like Adam Sandler or

Jim Carrey or something along those lines I agree

though Bill Murray is by far one of the funniest

men to ever act and Mike, what are you about

you? Anybody you're expecting to see represented

which Mike Open your mouth I'll call him Michael

um for me it depends on the decade it depends

on when they started it depends on you know like

like you said kevin steve martin john candy um

i know steve's gonna hate me for saying this

but i think carrie's jim carrie's comedy peaked

at the early 2000s he then went into more serious

roles Like I haven't seen a decent Jim Carrey

comedy in a long time Yeah, but in his day like

when he was first bursting on the scene. Oh,

no His day was the 90s That was his time slot

I won't disagree that the only thing good to

come out of Carrie in the last 10 years has been

serious Anything within the last 10 years he

hasn't really done a decent comedy and if he

has it's kind of been a plan something he did

before Yeah, I should I should Throw mr. Blanchard

under the bus here. So Mike, do you expect to

see any Will Ferrell or Steve Carell movies on

here? Okay, look I just don't like like there's

only one two Will Ferrell movies I can ever watch

old school and stranger than fiction Oh Shut

up, shut up, three. Jay and Silent Bob strike

back, because he is fourth build on that. But

that's just me. I don't like his style. I just

don't like him in general. As far as Steve Carell,

he's just an annoying prick, other than what

he's doing with the voice of Gru. Hey, I swear

to God Don Adams is rolling over in his grave

for that craptastic performance He didn't get

and here's another here's another instance where

you blame the actor and not the the people in

charge of making the film But he carried out

what they? You know what he was paid to do it

moviegoer that isn't stuck on the internet all

the time There's been a 40 year old version,

there's been - But the last two years he had

two gems. He had Daylight, the one year and -

Oh, what is it? A crazy stupid love? Yeah, a

crazy stupid love. Those two - Yeah, those two

were great. Can I just interject you real quick?

Yes. I don't like Will Ferrell either. Thank

God. Hang on. Hang on. I don't like him for the

same reason I don't like Dane Cook, and that's

because they feel like they need to yell to be

funny? Don't like that. That's the only that's

like if they're agree with that if they're funny

and they're not yelling I like them, but if they

like if they're in a role where they have to

like yell to be funny I don't I can't That it's

not funny to me Another person that I'm not sure

if he necessarily has a great chance. I mean,

I don't want to give anything away here there

but When I think of comedians and film I think

of Robin Williams sometimes too You know, he

doesn't necessarily have those Some of those

films that have just become iconic like some

of those other guys, but he is by far one of

the funniest men alive Oh, yeah, he is and the

thing about Robin is that? He's done both in

his career. He started out in comedy, but I you

know you see him in stuff like one -hour photo

or You know like that really serious stuff or

you see him on TV in an episode of law and order

where he's playing this completely creepy bad

-ass, you know what I mean? It's one of those

actors that's very versatile. It's one of those

things though that, and we can talk about this

on another show entirely, it's comedy actors

can play drama really well. Yeah, who was it?

Was it Joss Whedon on the commentary track for

Serenity said that comedy is hard, drama is easy?

Right. Timing -wise, you can't take just any

old actor and put them in a comedy and have it

work. But the genius comedians out there, it

seems like they've all done a dramatic role at

some point, and it's just been magical. You're

like, what the hell? Look at Jim Carrey. He did

the number 23. That was freaking badass for something

for him. Well, even think of Adam Sandler in

Reign Over Me. Fun Stroke Love? Yeah, some of

those, it's just like, or Jim Carrey has had

a couple where he's pulled off some pretty serious

roles. So yeah, I think you're right. Yeah, Truman

Show. Eternal Sunshine. Eternal Sunshine of the

Spouse Mind. Another guy we haven't mentioned

is Eddie Murphy. Now, I know he's had his share

of rotten eggs and whatnot, but... You mean the

decade of the two dads? Well, they all have had

their own share of rotten eggs, but... He's had

his... Good share, but at one time, he was kind

of synonymous with comedy and thinking of...

80s? Funny films and stuff like that. All right,

well, anybody else comments on comedians in particular

before we get to the list of honorable mentions?

This one quick aspect about comedy I think people

don't appreciate is just how important editing

is with a comedy, just because comedy relies

on timing a lot and it's so hard without even

an audience there to tightly edit You know jokes

to work so and you never see comedies up for

best editing But when you really look at great

comedies, they tend to be edited really well

and they and that's usually one like the the

great comedians in their background and stand

-up comedy kind of comes into play because they

know how to time a joke and that's a really important

factor with most great comedies I agree Starting

off with oh, let's see. Let's start with you

Blanchard Looking over the list of honorable

mentions which ones stand out the most to you

or which ones Are you sad to see here and not

in our top ten countdown? airplane for one holy

crap There oh and you know for those of you looking

at the list the top one there Fletch Fletch and

trading places were the closest to making it

and they missed it out missed out on it by two

points So that's how close it was. But yeah airplane

was the fourth highest I'm surprised to have

a Gilmore didn't make it. I you know that was

like the peak Sandler time like one of his I

think Steve wasn't Billy Madison is first Actually,

no he had a couple of other like bit part movies,

but like for a big budget Yeah, Billy Madison

was his first then happy no more, and that's

how he got happy Madison I mean, you know that

Gilmore, you know, the price is wrong Bob. The

price is right bitch all that stuff One thing

I'm not trying to interrupt you and I'll let

you continue in a second But this is one thing

that I was kind of interested to see because

we saw it with the action film because there's

a lot of action films that have you know sequels

and Trilogies and four or five six G's, you know

So it was interested to see what the action film

if we were gonna split based on which Like which

die -hard was voted the best or which lethal

weapon and does that eliminate the other ones,

you know did it? Steal votes the way it said

or if you split the vote like we did with the

Bourne movies You know does that cost one of

them a spot or make one higher lower with with

comedy I was interested to see because you don't

really have as many Of these sets of movies,

but I was interested to see if it would like

if an actor would split votes you know what I

mean like Do you know does everybody vote one

Adam Sandler movie higher than the other or does

everybody vote? You know one Jim Carrey movie

higher than the other and does it steal away

from some of those other ones? I don't know if

that took place But I know when making my list,

you know, I I had to decide amongst an actor

which of his films that I like better So yeah,

I was you know, I'm kind of surprised to see

happy Gilmore here but continue your thought

Mike I'm also surprised to see that both the

good Beverly Hills Cop movies didn't make it

because you know you talk about Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy isn't he's funny but he's funny

raw when he's cursing up a storm he can make

that funny without it talking down to the audience

it only you know obviously you go back and you

watch Beverly Hills Cop 2 and you just laugh

at the bar scene where he's like can I get a

coke no ice Whatever it was he says and the bartender

gives to him. He goes it'll be seven bucks, buddy

Seven dollars I can get blown for seven dollars,

you know It's that kind of comedy and I'm surprised

that's here. I'm surprised that both More so

the first one the same I'm surprised both caddyshack

films did not make it. I'm surprised the first

one That's probably one of my biggest shocking

things. I thought that everybody remembers the

turd in the pool You know Old baby Ruth. Well,

I mean I think when you when you ask most people

to list like the top comedies Everyone always

seems to list caddyshack somewhere and I was

I was a little surprised I did not have it on

I had it on my list of top 20 I did not have

it on my list of top 10 But I was surprised that

it didn't get more votes I figured it would be

a shoe -in but yeah, it's it's left here in the

honorable mention group I'm also the last one

I'll talk about actually the last two I'll talk

about is Liar liar and grumpy grumpy old men

liar liar. That is That is Jim Carrey playing

a low -key ace Ventura He's not too over -the

-top at the same time. It's still his style and

he's still very funny So I'm surprised that didn't

make it my ass You dummy yeah For me, it was

really three that stood out that I was really

shocked at we already talked about caddyshack

a little bit and others can expand on that when

we when we get around to them, but the other

two huge ones for me Number one that neither

one of the Ace Ventura movies made it. I know

I I love both of them. So do I. Especially Pet

Detective. I think I've ranked Pet Detective

a little bit higher, but I was just surprised

because I think Ace Ventura movies were kind

of like groundbreaking for not just Jim Carrey,

but it kind of a shift in what we knew as comedies

in the 90s there. And the other one that I think

is a travesty that it's not on the list, and

that's What About Bob. What About Bob I had ranked

at number two. and it's left here and honorable

mention to me that's bill murray at his best

and also richard rifus is best so i just i can

watch that movie a million times and i don't

know how it didn't make our list um... dan what

are your thoughts on some things that you're

seeing here it goes i hope to god that evan almighty

didn't make the list is a bruce almighty didn't

make the list evan almighty doesn't even need

to be on here i have to agree Um the go -off

of what you said about Bill Murray not making

less with what about Bob? I'm really surprised

Groundhog Day did not make it To me that's that

that's probably my favorite Bill Murray film

just because it really has a great heart to it

and that story overall It's just it's really

well hand and handled high cops at high -end

concept comedy. It's hard to do Right, but it

got pretty it got really dark quick, though Yeah,

but I think that that darkness kind of made a

lot of that like that final like that finale

really work and I think that I Don't know there

was that there was a really dark comedy aspect

like you mentioned that I really love with that

movie Also one that I'm not surprised didn't

make it. I was hoping it would which was my number

one, which was Annie Hall I just I'm a big fan

of Woody Allen. I think that Any Hall is a quintessential

romantic comedy that has come out in the last

30 years. And just, it was a really human story

and it's like Woody Allen at its best. But other

ones I'm surprised didn't make it. Christmas

Vacation. That's another classic film to hang

over. That's... You know modern times. Yeah for

modern times. I see like a movie like hangover

or What was that stepbrothers? Those are two

of the to me two are the more funny movies that

have come out in the last little bit and both

of them are obviously left here Sometimes I think

comedies it takes a little more time for them

to get the kind of the the credit or the you

know It's not like an instant. Everyone's a little

shy to rate Comedy is high when they just come

out or you know when it's only been like three

or four years It's to me different than some

of the other genres where it takes time to for

people to really appreciate a good comedy That's

very true because with comedy think the big It's

the big factor with it is its lasting power if

it can be funny 10 15 years after it comes out

because some comedies are funny for the time

But after a while they tend to kind of lose a

lot of the cluster Yeah, I was gonna I was gonna

bring that up that you know, it's Want to bring

up comedies that are recent but the if they don't

have you don't know if they stay on the test

of time I find like when I watch a comedy now

if they make any kind of What's the word for

where they reference like a current event? Yeah,

pulp culture like I I mean it could kind of cringe

cuz I'm like, how's that gonna play? Right when

no one gets it. It's so it's it's you know, it's

that kind of thing And the last one that I'm

surprised didn't make it is the jerk like I was

just gonna mention that one the Steve Martin

and again That's I would think is his best film

his most well -known film and really surprised

that did not make the list I agree to me that's

his best film and that's one like again I can

watch over and over and it was really close.

I mean it was you know, only about ten points

away It was in our kind of the it would have

been the next in the next group of ten But yeah,

I agree with you there. Go ahead if you had other

thoughts. That's pretty much it. The other ones

I think we talked about are those films that

are hard to pick. There's Shaun of the Dead and

Zombieland. I think some people kind of split

those. And there's other films regarding like

Anchorman, also another one that's recent. So

maybe that's not a film people didn't want to

put on their list because they're not sure how

well that's going to stand up. But yeah, that's

pretty much the ones that I'm the most surprised

by you know We talked about some of the current

ones like step brothers and hangover another

one that kind of fits that mold for me as wedding

crashers That was literally one of the first

times in like a decade where I was laughing out

loud in the theater It kind of like rejuvenated

my my love for comedies in a way in more of the

modern because I was kind of like had given up

on You know, I loved all these classics. I love,

you know, John Candy or Steve Martin or Bill

Murray, et cetera, et cetera. And kind of after

the Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler run of the 90s,

I just wasn't finding stuff funny. And then Wedding

Crashers came along and it kind of like, oh,

there are still funny people out there for me.

So I kind of appreciated that one. Ninja, since

I can't call you Mike, what about you looking

over this list of honorable mentions? Uh, well,

you know, all I have to say is I'm glad Anchorman

didn't even make the list. I mean, it's here

on the honor roll mentions, but it's not in the

top ten because I don't understand people's...

Me neither. Fascination with that movie. I'll

stand for it. I love that movie I think I love

I love its oddity and its willingness to kind

of go for it and be weird and strange and the

kind of this it's just It's just so random at

times. I guess that's what I appreciate. Oh,

no, that's fine. I just I mean, it's a funny

movie I just there, you know, I work with a bunch

of people That absolutely loved Anchorman and

they'd like had a freaking party when Anchorman

2 was announced and I was like really like I

don't Yeah, I mean it's great but Sure, if it's

on TV, I might watch it But you know, I don't

own it and the other thing just looking over

the list I'm really interested to see what the

top 10 is after looking at what didn't make it.

Yeah, but I comedies for me like I just Don't

know I watch they're not like something. I actively

seek out I don't go to a movie specifically because

it's comedy, but I'm looking at these and I'm

kind of wondering What stands out because they

had like a catchphrase for the day Or like our

key one -liner and that just kind of that kind

of like sticks with you You know as you get older

like the Jim Carrey stuff Because I know before

we started recording we were all going crazy

with the Yeah, but detective one -liners and

stuff like that. I'm just you know, I'm wondering

How that plays into your psyche when you're yeah,

like is it is it because I what I think about

these movies I just remember like the key phrases,

but I don't remember like I Take them out of

context and I don't really chuckle when I say

the key phrases But I I know the movies for their

key phrases more than them being funny I Guess

this is what I'm trying to say. Yeah. No that

makes sense I think I think some movies have

that you know I think some of them that I wouldn't

have ranked quite as high have that to me that's

what separates the ones that I ranked in my top

10 or top 20 was it was more than just catchphrases

it was stuff where I can remember scenes and

lines and characters and like all kinds like

it's non -stop stuff that I can think about that

was funny compared to some of these movies that

I'm seeing an honorable mention where I can only

think of like one scene or one line or Yeah,

I remember so -and -so was in that and I think

they were funny, but I don't remember why type

thing Like I see just going back to anchorman

real quick. I look at that and I think I think

about the the whole what are we yelling at part

Yeah, it's just that's like one of the only scenes

that stands out in that movie to me Another one

that usually gets a lot of credit from people

is there's something about Mary I went for the

comb in her hair. Well, that's one way to say

it, I guess. You just went right for it. I guess,

yeah, you were not messing around. You are not,

you are blunt as all can be with that. And before

Steve gets his thoughts, you know, another thing

I'm seeing with the honorable mentions is, and

I love these movies and... It's movies that have

had you know, they're all kind of in that same

spoof type genre and some of them I've had multiple

incarnations, but some stuff in honorable mentions

like Naked Gun Like Police Academy Like Robin

Hood men in tights some of those that we got

kind of a lot of those types of movies Didn't

rank as high amongst our list, but I'm glad some

of them got votes and whatnot But I'm not surprised

that they're honorable mentions Major League

would be another one like that some of those

that are just kind of like more of a series of

movies and One other one from my list that I

want to give a quick shout out because it never

gets enough credit is maverick. I Freaking love

maverick But Steve, what are your thoughts about

looking over the honorable mention list? Well,

I'm obviously sad that Ace Ventura in any capacity

is not in this top 10. I find that those movies

are entertaining. Yeah, there's catchphrases

in it, but there's a lot of funny moments between

them. The only thing that dates them is Ace Ventura

1 has the sports stuff in it. So that kind of

dates that one a little bit. But still, I'm surprised

that's not on there. I'm surprised that Training

Places and Fletch aren't on there. Those are

some classic 80s films that should have been

on there. One of Mel Brooks' films, The Robin

Hood Men in Tights, I really like that film.

I find it very funny. Granted, there's some kind

of pop culture references in it to some degree,

but I find it still entertaining despite that.

I see quite a few Adam Sandler films, whether

it be Anger Management or Click or Happy Gilmore.

I'm just surprised because some of those films

are very funny, especially with who they've got

in them. I mean, look at Anger Management. You

have that crazy amount of comedic talent. between

Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler going back and

forth, and then John Titoro. So that's just really

funny. Horrible bosses. I'm kind of surprised

it's not on there, but kind of not at the same

time. Just the fact that it's more of a happy

coincidence of certain things happening. It was

still funny, but it's more of that. and then

of course the you know the liar liar and police

academy and kind of like the super troopers I

I'm really surprised on some of those but that's

I guess pretty much what rounds out my surprise

that at least one of those films didn't make

it as far as any of the you know the better police

academy ones or stuff like that so Is there any

movie among the lists that hasn't been mentioned

yet that anyone wants to give a shout out to

that thinks they deserve at least a Mention on

the podcast episode Something that we haven't

talked about yet that you're seeing on that list

anybody was asking about lines that stand out

and The last thing I'll say is even though I

only watch it at Christmas time every so often

Hallelujah, holy shit. Where's the Tylenol? Pumps

into my hand. Chevy chases rant from Christmas

vacation at the end that and his His tie thing

of looking at his wrist. I've got a thing Because

he doesn't have a watch on One that I would also

like to mention that I missed was The Big Lebowski.

Conan Brothers' comedy is really unique. It's

kind of hard. There are films that you kind of

have to watch a few times often to kind of define

the jokes, because they're not very blatant.

But they're really great at creating colorful

characters. And the thing about The Big Lebowski,

that's one that's kind of aged better with time.

It wasn't really looked upon as a great film

when it first came out. after time it's kind

of great created this cult following it's a movie

i go back to a lot that um john goodman and um

a really great cast that i find really hilarious

but um i can understand why it's not on the list

because it's comedy it's comedy is kind of it's

not very broad and if you don't like that style

you you probably want to be able to embrace it

so funny thing is i just saw that movie about

two weeks ago because a guy in my media class

showed her to me. Yeah, that's one that you either

like or you don't like. It's kind of one end

or the other. Anyone else, a film that they want

to mention that hasn't been talked about yet

that they're seeing on the list? Blanchard, anything?

Blanchard's dead. South Park. I mean, I... Oh,

South Park. That's just funny that... I don't

consider that a top 10 film. That's an incredible

movie though. Yeah, it is I'm not saying I I'm

just saying I don't consider it a top 10 film

maybe a top 20 film if we were doing a top 20

list But I don't consider it a top 10 film No,

I don't go ahead. Sorry Mike. No, I was gonna

say I mean just looking over the honorable mentions

I'm pretty sure I would have forgotten about

most of these movies making a top 10 list like

if I was just paying 10 I was trying to remember

10 movies off the top, comedies off the top of

my head. I'm fairly certain most of these probably

would not pop into my head. Yeah. Mostly because

some of these I've only seen when I was a kid.

My dad was like, hey, check this out with me

son. And I had no idea what I was watching, like,

you know, Fletcher, Airplane. I can remember

scenes from Airplane, but, you know, older stuff

like that. I've been candy shack. I've seen them.

I've seen those but you know, I haven't seen

them as a as an adult like I was like Probably

less than 10 when I was watching those movies

with my dad so And that too plays into it, you

know at what point we did you see it originally

and you know Where were you in your life where

it could either make an impact or not make an

impact? So, yeah anybody else last comment before

we go to number 10 Nope, that's it All right

Coming in at number 10. We talked about people

that we might see or might not see well We're

gonna knock two of them out with one one stone

here at number 10 and that is the 1987 comedy

film starring John Candy and Steve Martin Plains

trains and automobiles. Oh, that's not a pillow

It actually came in a tie for tenth with another

one that we'll get to it right after it But yeah

planes trains and automobiles. I definitely had

I had a number four on my list I Just I love

these two guys and this together in this film.

Well, they were freaking amazing. Oh, that was

comedy gold So I am not upset at all that this

is amongst our top ten Mike you had it on your

list. Oh Yeah, I love this movie This movie is

what is so great about the about 80s comedy because

Well, most not most but there's a lot of 80s

comedies that center around Christmas time this

one centers around Thanksgiving and that's why

I kind of like it and and John Candy was everywhere

I mean this Home Alone, you know, he was he was

everywhere not not just in his own movies, but

Just the combination of Of these two guys put

them together. It's kind of like putting Steve

Martin next to Martin Short in father of the

bride the same thing there There's all these

fireworks because Steve Martin at least in this

movie Basically has a stick up his ass the whole

time Not literally, you know and just that one

scene with the foot the rental lady with Good

old Edie McClurg That was just hilarious and

just the trials and tribulations that they that

his character goes through to get home is just

crazy Yeah, it has a 94 % rating on positive

rating on Rotten Tomatoes Got two thumbs up from

Siskel and Ebert Siskel said it was John Candy's

best role about up to that point There's a lot

of memorable scenes in this and it was one of

those where it wasn't just funny like it was

both funny and like Don't know like it had some

like heartfelt moments in it that were mixed

in like you really feel bad for John Candy's

character But at the same time you realize how

annoying and how much of a nuisance he is to

Steve Martin's character So I just think the

two of them fit those roles perfectly Dan what

are your thoughts on planes and trains? It's

not a movie that made my list, but I think it's

it's it fits this list perfectly It's Mike powers

mentioned about movies that that he maybe watched

as a kid and doesn't really remember that much.

This is one that kind of fits that for me. I

remember watching it as a kid, but I really haven't

revisited it in a long time. But what I do remember

is that relationship between Candy and Martin

and how well they had worked together and how

great chemistry they had. But it's honestly been

a really long time since I revisited that film,

so I really don't have a lot to say about it.

I'm just gonna go real quick because I have to

agree with what Dan said. This is one of those

movies I was talking about. Yeah. To me it's

worth a re -watch because this movie is just

gold to me. Like every time I watch it I'm busting

up and you know it's one of those words yeah

there are certain lines that stick with me but

there's all it's like they're so numerous and

the number of scenes that I can remember and

just like when you when it doesn't seem I can

get any worse it just gets worse and it's just

like oh you just how much Trouble can these guys

have to go through in their in their adventure

and you kind of feel for both of them Steve What

are your thoughts about this one? I just I love

that film. It's it's so funny. I mean you get

them driving around in the husk of a car. I mean

it's Yeah, you know and John Candy selling all

these you know What was it shower curtain pieces?

Yeah, I mean it's just Some of the stuff going

on in this film is just goofy as all hell, but

between the two of them. It's it's it's such

a rewatchable movie just because of the two of

them and I mean especially around Thanksgiving

time, but it's uh It's one of those ones that

I find really enjoyable that I don't think I

even had seen it up until about a year or two

ago and I Am so glad that I saw it I agree. And

like I said, it wasn't alone in its spot in our

rankings. It actually tied. So I guess we'll

consider this one number nine, but it's still

basically the same as number 10 here. So we had

our eighties film so far. Now we're going to

jump into the nineties. Another star that we

expected to see, although me personally, I would

have expected to see him in one of his other

films that was on the honorable mention. And

it's 1994's The Mask with Jim Carrey. I personally

put Ace Ventura ahead of The Mask. I enjoy Ace

Ventura much more. But talking about lines, Somebody

Stop Me is definitely one of the most quoted

lines from any comedy film. And that was on AFI's

100 years, 100 movie quotes that Somebody Stop

Me was nominated for that list. So who wants

to start with The Mask? I think it was on Steve's

list, it was on Mike's list. You guys both had

it ranked pretty high, so I don't want you guys

to give it a run. This is one of those films

that, I mean, when I first had seen it, I didn't

know it was based off a comic book, so that was

kind of refreshing to see that, that it really

played out well. Jim Carrey did a really really

good job at playing this character I mean it

had a little bit of his ace Ventura flair to

it But you know it's it's got a lot of his personality

Or split personality thereof It also features

the cinematic debut of Cameron Diaz That's true

in this film you get to see Jim Carrey, you know

where he He sings at the park and kind of mesmerizes

all the cops and constantly being chased. And

he's, you know, this this dorky bank representative.

And, you know, finally grows a pair because he's

become the mask and everything by the end of

the movie. But I mean, it's it's so entertaining

to watch. You've got the lines of, you know,

somebody stop me smoking and then, you know,

you know, it's party time. And, you know, I mean,

just all these different, you know, kind of some

of them being pop culture references and some

of them just being, you know, his personality

and the character. But it's I think that it's

a very entertaining film to watch that I find

it hard to get bored with. Mike, what about your

thoughts for you since you had it ranked pretty

high as well? I pretty much agree with Steve.

I mean, this is one of those films that. You

just can't help but love Because it not only

is it funny, but it also Basically, it's he plays

in every man who turns into this superhero As

he puts it better nice Ventura Wouldn't it's

better than ace Ventura to I will say that Oh

boo I like the second one look the mother rhinos

giving birth I like where he's in the monster

truck actually, but But no the mask I love the

mask. It's so cool. It's so cool What what he

can do I like when he when he when he imitates

the wolf from Looney Tunes when he's in the club

But it just goes to show you how much Jim Carrey's

comedic style has come since then, and it's a

true testament to how he started out. One thing

about the mask though is that is clearly a role

that it was made for Jim Carrey and it really

used his his talents well, I mean he has that

rubber face and literally and literally in this

movie with the mask but like that his facial

expressions and they made sense in this movie

and Personally it like you guys mentioned. I

think there's maybe better Jim Carrey films that

could go on this list like East Ventura or even

Big fan of Dumb and Dumber. But I remember watching

this movie as a kid, and the thing that still

sticks in my mind is when the dog gets the mask

and pees on the guy with acid pee or whatever.

That's the first thing I think of when I think

of the mask and the cartoon that followed it.

But yeah, I'm actually kind of surprised to see

it on the list, honestly. Booth Ninja, you got

any comments on the mask? Just from what I remember

of the mask, because I haven't watched it in

the last decade. To me, it just seemed like more

of a kooky superhero film. I do remember laughing

at it, but it definitely doesn't come across

as a full -fledged comedy to me because so much

of it was... I don't know. I cannot form a complete

thought tonight. I don't know what is wrong with

me. Well, I kind of view it the same way. I saw

it once when it was new and I literally haven't

watched it since. I've just never had a desire

to watch it again I thought it was funny in its

time and I thought it was Jim Carrey in his element

like Dan said it was a role made for Jim Carrey

but what separates it from Ace Ventura for me

is I every once in a while have a desire to watch

Ace Ventura again where I never seemed to want

to watch the mask again even though I know it

was funny and I know it was good for what it

was I'm not surprised to see it on our list I'm

just surprised to see it on our list in lieu

of Ace Ventura I agree Yeah, I think that surprises

me too. And just like we had a tie for number

nine, we do have one more tie in our countdown

and that's coming up next. I guess it would be

a tie for seventh. And the first one we will

talk about is also from, well it's one year later,

from 1995. And we all thought that we'd see him

somewhere, so it's Adam Sandler in Billy Madison.

So that is coming in as a tie for number 7th

Happy Gilmore did not make the list Billy Madison

did Mike which from which of the movies do you

prefer I? like them both but I I Think it's cuz

I saw Happy Gilmore for first I like that one

better But I still like and enjoy Billy Madison

like your personality Billy Madison is more lame

like your personality. Okay Mine's more inventive

Your ears results into beating things with a

stick Yeah, you you keep sniffing stuff so you'll

see penguins everywhere I literally had a pet

detective Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison ranked

one right after the other with Billy Madison

being the highest and I don't know, I just something

about the story for that one separated a little

bit for me. I just I don't know. I like I love

both Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. And I'm

glad that one of Adam Sandler's film is represented

on this list because he literally dominated the

comedy film scene for much of a decade. So I'm

glad that one of his better ones before he kind

of went off the wagon a little while later is

represented Steve your thoughts on on Billy Madison

because I know you had it ranked number three

on your list This is one of those films that

my wife and I can pop in all the time or that

we can sit there and quote and it never gets

old watching it just from you know the the various

stupid antics that he has or where he's you know

in the bathtub fighting with the the shampoo

and the conditioner and you know spills and then

he's like stop looking at me swan or he's chasing

an invisible penguin throughout the film where

he you know starts the the old Doyle's prank

which later comes into play in Click and then

you know it's There's a bunch of funny different

things. You've got Chris Farley in it. You've

got Norm MacDonald where he starts having SNL

cast members in his films. It's one of those

classic Adam Sandler films that, yes, it does

actually have a point to the film, unlike some

of his later films. Mean a lot of his earlier

films did where he dominated through the 90s

and part of the 2000s, but This was I think the

first one that kind of You know showed that he

can do wacky and then he kind of went in different

directions from there But well, there's also

I think both happy Gilmore and Billy Madison

Score a lot of points for being the original

ones and you know, there was a formula kind of

used over and over again But people don't Give

these films as much of a hard time because they

were the original ones You know it got to the

point where it seemed like it was repetitive

where we would see it You know all of his friends

show up, and I don't necessarily dislike that

at all But I know a lot of people kind of got

tired of the same somewhat same formula being

used movie after movie and these are his the

Billy Madison and happy Gilmour's before he even

formed his company to start producing his own

films mm -hmm and the guys that wrote a lot of

his films that were comedy gold wrote for both

Chris Farley and Adam Sandler on Saturday Night

Live. Right. Yeah, and good Lord, we didn't talk

about Chris Farley at all, but that guy was a

comedic genius too. Yeah, although only for a

short time. Dan, are you not an Adam Sandler

fan? Because I don't believe any Adam Sandler

films made your top 20. I'm not not an Adam Sandler

fan. Like, I mean, probably my favorite film

would be Happy Gilmore or Also, I also really

enjoy wedding singer I just thought honestly

there was just a lot stronger comedies that I

felt belonged Ahead of his films and I think

part of partially is because you mentioned he

kind of does rely on the same thing over and

over again I do like Billy Madison. I think my

first exposure growing up was happy Gilmore So

I think that's why I probably favor that one

over Billy Madison what I do like about Billy

Madison it does have A decent not not as surprisingly

strong cast like also has Bradley what's Woodford

from West Wing? He's been in a bunch of other

shows He was in Cabin in the Woods last year

and also Steve Buscemi as being the creepy guy

who comes in the safe I'm at the end and Steve

Buscemi plays a great creepy guy. So Yeah, I

I don't dislike Adam Sandler. I'm just maybe

not as big of a fan of you guys as you guys are

Was introduced to Billy Madison and heavy Gilmore

at the same time thanks to my cousin We rented

both of them and one night and watched them both

back -to -back and almost every weekend after

that we proceeded to rent the same two movies

But Billy Madison was always my favorite I think

I just identified with the well I can't really

say identified, but I got the whole I found the

adult going back to school thing a lot funnier

than some guy trying to win a golf tournament

yeah um so they both have they're both funny

and i i do enjoy them more than say big daddy

or something like that so yeah i agree with dan

the only other one i kind of put up there that

i can really enjoy is like the wedding singer

that would be my third one um that i put on that

list from that early from you know that 90s period

before I mean there's something that he did later

on in the 2000s that I appreciate but 90s for

me it was either happy Gilmore Billy Madison

and then wedding or yeah the wedding singer right

after that and As I mentioned before we had another

tie here. So the one that was tied here for the

seventh spot We're gonna have to go a little

bit farther back to 1983 And we're gonna check

another comedian off our list that was not mentioned

in the introductory segment and that's a chase

And the movie here is National Lampoon's Vacation,

or sometimes referred to as Just Vacation. But

yeah, the 1983 film directed by Harold Ramis

starring Chevy Chase with a cameo by John Candy.

I'm not surprised that one of the Lampoon movies

is represented. I think there was a split in

the vote where you had Christmas Vacation get

some votes that could have possibly gone to Just

the regular vacation. I guess we can call it

Who wants to talk about? national influence vacation

Nobody well Same here. Yeah, I don't think I

last for me. I don't it's not that I don't want

to want to see it I just I don't think I've ever

seen it or if I have seen it I've caught it like

in the middle of it on TV or something like that

But I honestly don't remember this movie at all.

John Candy's in the very end of it. They go to

Wally World. To me, I mean, I don't know. I mean,

it's... This was the... Am I referring to this

right? Is this the first one? Yes, this is the

very first vacation film. Yeah, so for me it

gets a little bit of credit for launching this

whole franchise. I'm not talking about... the

bastardization that has happened to this franchise

in the last decade or so but are you talking

about the national lampoon name yeah the way

that they actually the rights to the national

lampoon thing not to go off in too far of a tangent

got sold off and so around the time of the vegas

vacation it's not actually a national lampoon

film right that's what i'm saying but i think

a lot of people kind of confuse that or get it

all mixed together and to me when i think of

You know that name or this series. I mean, it's

it's this one. It's European vacation Christmas

vacation You know, that's that's about it. I

don't think of hardly any other films when I

think about this That name of National Lampoon's

Van Wilder Well, there's Van Wilder. There's

Van Wilder 2 there's Van Wilder 3 Vegas vacation

senior trip National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon

1, which spoofs all the action movies, stars

Emilio Estevez. Charlie Sheen. Exactly. I'm winning.

Currently Garner's 94 % fresh rating on Rotten

Tomatoes. It's widely considered to be the best

film in National Lampoon series of vacation films.

Dan, what are your thoughts on this chapter of

the National Lampoon saga? I think it's probably

the The usually the best of this that series

maybe even the best national lampoons. I guess

you can argue a few others It's Chevy Chase being

funny, which he stopped being a while ago, though.

He's funny again now community There's a there's

a lot of like great moments in the in that in

that film especially with the grandmother and

the dog don't want to give anything away because

like it sounds like two people haven't seen that

film but it's it's just and it's a great family

story too i think that's um when those Vacation

films are working. It's when they still have

that the family aspect to it But they kind of

play with it a little bit and they're not as

conventional and I don't know if you all are

aware but they also they're talking about doing

of course doing a remake of the Original vacation

film and maybe not a remake more. There's news.

There's two different things that they're talking

about one's either rebooting it completely or

the other is to Send it off with Chevy Chase

and Beverly D 'Angelo as the grandparents and

then having it take place with Rusty and his

kids Yeah, and the person they were thinking

for Rusty would be at Helms From the office.

He was in Cedar Rapids, which I think would actually

be a pretty good choice But anyways, I like vacation

didn't make my list. I'm glad National Lampoon's

is on here I know their name doesn't mean anything

now, but I think when it was working it was really

respected name and comedy Unfortunately, they

kind of ran it into the ground just to throw

it on DVDs. But, you know, you'll have that.

I think honestly, if if they were going to do

that with Rusty and bring him back and have them

be the grandparents, I would choose for an actor.

I would probably choose either honestly, Ethan

Embry from Vegas Vacation or if they really wanted

to do an homage to the classic of the franchise.

Go with Leonard from Big Bang Theory because

he was rusty and Christmas vacation Johnny Galecki

But yeah, I mean that's series that entire series

any anything that Chevy Chase is in with vacation

in the name of it It was always it was always

funny All right, any other thoughts on the vacation

franchise I'm glad like Like you guys said, I'm

just glad it's on the spot on the list somewhere

that one of those movies is represented I I could

be just as happy if this was Christmas vacation,

but to me, this is the original one. So it kind

of deserves that Going into number six apparently

1994 was a good year for comedy because we already

had a film that came out in 1994 on our list

with the mask the next one Starring Jim Carrey

and Jeff Daniels to me is the comedy of our generation

Dumb and Dumber. Dumb and Dumber. It literally

does not get any funnier than this as far as

movies that came out in the 90s to me. I'd put

Ace Ventura and some of the Adam Sandler ones

close, but they don't touch Dumb and Dumber.

I got a little bit of inside information on Dumb

and Dumber. Dumb and Dumber was actually not

done by the Farrelly Brothers. Right. That's

why it sucked. And Peter Farrelly was on The

Nerdist a couple of weeks ago, and he actually

leaked out and said that they're in talks with

Jeff and Jim for a sequel. They've been doing

that for two years now. Yeah, that's not new.

That's going to be in limbo forever. In 2000,

Total Film magazine voted it the fifth greatest

comedy of all time. It's 445th on Empire magazine's

500 greatest movies of all time. But like I said,

to me this one just, it's Jim Carrey at his best

and kind of a weird pairing but an excellent

pairing with Jeff Daniels that just worked so

well. Just so many moments in this film. For

me, the one that probably stands out is when

the laxative slash whatever you want to call

it scene is just hilarious. There's so many parts

of this film that are just absolutely memorable

comedic gem. Yes Someone else talk about this

Epic film for me. It was the one scene. I always

laughed at and I know it's cruel to laugh at

this but the cork in the snow owl That's horrible

Because you know exactly where it's going you

soon as you you knew as soon as you saw them

in that room And they were messing around with

the champagne bottle you knew exactly what was

gonna happen, and I laugh at that every time

so Listen in Michael Blanchard supports animal

cruelty I really enjoyed dumb and dumber. It's

actually one of the movies that I can You know

I can watch and keep laughing and I actually

like what the opening scene just Daniels in the

low Oh, yeah, he's in he's in the back. He's

trying to pick up the girl and she turns him

down So then he climbs to the front. He's he's

actually the driver. I just there's there's There's

too much good things about that Usually it's

easy for me to pick something bad about it out

of us only when it's all good But I can't remember

anything being bad about that movie. I had another

scene too when he's going down the street on

the bike and he's got like the frost and the

bugs hitting him and like yeah oh my goodness

the drool and whatnot turning into frozen it's

just there's so many I do have a question though

because this is one of those I was obviously

the one that compiled all the rankings and the

voting and I was literally flipping out because

All the movies that I thought were shoe -ins

after I had like three or four of the lists were

not even close to making the list We already

talked I already talked about the travesty. I

think that is what about Bob not making the list

This is literally one of the films that wasn't

gonna be on the list until I got the last list

turned in Because it didn't appear on anybody's

it didn't appear on Steve Mike Dan none of your

guys's list had dumb and dumber on it Think I

overlooked that only for the fact that I had

other films. I wanted to yeah Kind of Michael

Wilson saved the day because he put it at his

number three of all time, which is where it was

on my list I Was gonna be shocked that if this

didn't make the final list because to me this

is this is the funniest movie of our childhood

slash adolescence For me, honestly, I just it

there's just stronger films within We are considering

from the 70s to now. So overall I loved them

a dumber but consider trying to cram, you know

hundreds of hundreds of comedies into a 20 top

20 or top 10 list you don't really have much

from the You're not a 90s fan when it comes to

comedy No, I had a lot of 70s a few 80s, but

yeah, I Yeah, I guess I don't know that 90s comedy

I the only one that really made my list were

like, Groundhog Day, Big Lebowski. But when I

was growing up, this was one of my favorite movies

and there are an endless amount of quotes like,

you know, we have no jobs, our pet's heads are

falling off, you know, there's just so many great

lines, you know, it's like, it's endlessly quotable,

like, you know, where the women will flow like

to see a Capistrano, like, although I'm probably

missing out most of the lines, but. You know

It is it's hilarious. It is really funny. I guess

just as we mentioned comedy. I felt comedy was

a lot harder to Formulate into top 20 than it

was for action when action I kind of knew where

I would put things but when it came to comedy

certain films I thought like which would be dumb

and dumber would easily make my top 20 when I

Considered everything it just didn't make my

list Fair enough anybody else have thoughts on

dumb and dumber before we head to the next group

of five I could start some shit by saying Dumb

and Dumber and Cable Guy are about the same in

greatness in my opinion. Oh, fuck you, they are

not. Cable Guy is so worse. I love Cable Guy.

I didn't even think about Cable Guy. I hate that

movie. I love it. Cable Guy. I probably like

Cable Guy as much as I do because I pulled up

a really great prank that ended up getting me

slapped in the face on the first day of high

school. Fuck. I Think it's a good good thing

that we knocked out some of our comedians so

so far in our top ten list We've gone through

five films and we've seen John Candy We've seen

Steve Martin Jim Carey Adam Sandler and Chevy

Chase So we knocked out a bunch of the the main

headliners Which is probably a good thing because

we're not gonna knock many out the rest of the

way I'm not saying anything bad about the films,

but We we're not gonna have those headliners

as much That just come to your mind that we mentioned

in that opening segment And nothing is more truer

than that than with number five on our list Which

I'm gonna have to have somebody else take the

reins on this one because I just can't stand

anything about this franchise But I know that

it is a cult favorite and and so many people

respect and love it and that is 1975's Which

I am glad that a couple of these people are here,

but Monty Python and the Holy Grail comes in

at number five I just gave it a ring and endorsement,

so somebody else should talk now. This would

be Dan's cup of tea. Yeah, this was my number

three. I'm surprised to hear bad things about

Mighty Python, because they are innovators when

it comes to comedy. A lot of their non sequitur

humor, if you look at their movies, they're very

reminiscent of the Marx Brothers, because the

people I talked about editing earlier, and they're

people who know how to really edit jokes, and

they're really like... money python and the search

in the holy grail are really like a lot of skits

I kind of Put into a movie and yet it works really

well Because you could really pick that film

up at any part and watch any any section of it

without watching anything before And it still

makes sense. It's still funny. You know, you

have some of the most well -known comedic moments

like with the black knight it's just What I love

about money python is they're very abrasive and

They do certain things that you probably couldn't

get away with nowadays, especially because they're

British They have a certain charm to them where

people seem not to mind I almost thought about

putting life of Brian on my list because I think

that's a better movie But overall considering

how much Holy Holy Grail has kind of influenced

pop culture and comedy in general That's why

I kind of put that one a little higher But I

know I love money python just because they're

just There's a silliness to them, yet they are

still kind of genuine and they don't go too far

with it. They can be slapstick, but they're also

really quippy as well. So that's why I appreciate

MoneyPython. Understand like that how popular

it is and how many people like it and then for

the record Michael Wilson. This was his number

one ranked movie Just for me. It's just not my

style I can literally watch the end and I can

put any Monty Python film on in front of me And

I will watch the entire thing and I will not

laugh one time Michael Wilson tried the I'm sorry

to interrupt you Michael Wilson tried to get

me to watch several clips from several of the

Monty Python movies And I just I'm the same way.

I did not laugh I just don't find that style

of humor funny at all, I don't know. I guess

it's like me with Adam Sandler. Exactly. It's

just with comedy, that's the hard thing with

comedy. It's hard to, people have different tastes.

Like with an action movie, there are action movies

that I think everyone can appreciate, but with

comedy there's... Different styles and different

ways of telling jokes and like maybe you more

into like a type of adam sandler or you think

more thought -provoking like a west anderson

And I think that's why it gets hard harder with

a comedy list because they're all those different

types of styles Yeah, I mean you have the goofy

stuff like the like the jim carrey just off -the

-wall crazy stuff You have the spoof type things

like we talked about with like a police academy

or a robin hoodman and tights And then you have

british humor and that's just something that

I just can't wrap my head around um But I do

appreciate that so many people love the Monty

Python series in a way. If they're going to name

one movie that's at the top, it is usually Holy

Grail. So I'm not surprised that it's on our

top 10. It's just not something I can vote for.

Dan, you have any thought or not? Why do I keep

calling Michael Dan? I have no idea. No, I have

to I kind of agree with everybody except for

Dan. It's not my thing. I have. I have seen portions

of quite a few of the Monty Python things and

I just there I'll chuckle at some but I don't

think I'll ever straight -up laugh at anything

but I I respect it like I get you know, I Not

gonna say it's bad because I can understand why

people like it It's it's the same way with you

know, there's there's certain video game franchises

that I just won't play But I can't deny what

they've done for the video games. So I can't

deny what Monty Python's done for comedy. It's

just not my thing. Right. Steve, any thoughts?

I think he muted himself. He likes to do that.

Yes, I did. I did. But I was saying on mute that...

That I don't find it very entertaining or funny.

I have a lot of friends that find it entertaining

and funny. I just I don't care for it either

Yeah But we're gonna stay about that same time

period for our fourth one on the list We're going

a what is the year forward or your backwards

here a year backwards back to 1974 I am happy

that we have Eugene Wilder citing and this is

the Mel Brooks 1974 film Blazing Saddles. I expected

Blazing Saddles or Caddyshack or both to be on

here. I was surprised that Caddyshack wasn't.

I'm not saying that they're anywhere near the

same movies or anything like each other but this

was ranked number six on America or AFI's 100

years 100 laughs list so I'm not surprised that

it ranks in our top 10. I haven't seen it in

a long time. So I can't speak too much of it,

but I'm sure Dan can can speak a little bit to

blazing saddles Hopefully I talked about yeah

with blazing saddles I talked about Monty Python

how a lot of their jokes probably wouldn't fly

now Blazing saddles would it would cause them

up or if it came out today, but just in how it

deals with race and There are certain jokes that

has because a lot of it was written written by

Richard Pyer That during like the 70s were certain

things were more accepted As we've come more

PC, they just, you know, they're not as as accepted

as they were back then. When looking, I'm glad

Mel Brooks made this list because he deserves

to his style of comedy. His is been so influential.

You see it everywhere. Look, I don't think you

get the Zucker brothers without getting Mel Brooks.

And I think everyone has their favorite Mel Brooks

film. It some people have space balls and people

love young Frankenstein. It's really hard to

choose I go with blazing saddles and I think

mainly because of Gene Wilder His who is also

in young Frankenstein, but what I love about

it, too It's just it's take on Westerns and like

it's how it's heavily influenced by like old

Hollywood films and Kind of not Brooks takes

those concepts of like John Ford or other classic,

you know Western filmmakers and puts it in a

comedic state setting and we talked about how

comedy has different forms. Mel Brooks is king

at taking all those forms and putting it in one

movie. You have a scene which is just a bunch

of cowboys eating beans and farting and yet it's

funny because of it and there's all the really

great quotes and Mel Brooks is like kindly comedy.

So I think that's why Blazing Saddles works so

well because it has something for everyone. Well

said and I you know, I think it too. Yeah, it

kind of defined I think you could say like For

the 70s that was one of the one of the you know

Go -to films as far as comedies go, you know

We talked about Dumb and Dumber being that way

for the 90s to me blazing saddles is kind of

that way for the 70s So many people love this

movie. Like I said, I just need to rewatch it

because I haven't seen it in a long time to be

able to. I did rank it because I remember loving

it when I watched it. I just can't speak to like

specific scenes or anything because it's been

so long since I've seen it. I'm the same way

like you. I need to rewatch it. Same. So it's

on my list to rewatch. But so we've had two 70s

films making our list here back to back. We are

going to jump away from the 70s, though, and

go somewhere we haven't gone very often. And

that is the 80s. And again, this is one that

if it wasn't for the last two people to turn

in list JT and Michael Wilson This film would

not have made the list and I probably would have

boycotted this entire thing This is not only

my favorite comedy of all time. It's quite possibly

one of my favorite movies of all time. Since

we're doing the AFI thing, I'll tell you where

it goes here. It was nominated for AFI's 100

Years, 100 Laughs. It was on the 100 Years, 100

Quotes. This movie is just ridiculously awesome.

And for me, again, the best comedy ever, and

that's The Princess Bride in 1987. We get a little

bit of Peter Falk, we get Carrie Ells, Mandy

Patinkin, Andre the freaking giant, Christopher

Gass, Billy Crystal, Wallace Shawn. I can watch

this movie every week and not get tired of it.

So I am very happy that it ranks on our list.

Number three, The Princess Bride. Anybody else

have comments on this movie? I got nothing. It's

just not my thing. How can you not like Under

the Giant? I didn't say I didn't like Under the

Giant. I'm just saying the movie, it doesn't

hold anything for me. I think it came on AMC

a couple of years ago, maybe 2011, and I tried

to watch it. I fell asleep after five minutes.

Well, you've got to get past the first little

bit. It's a good movie when you get into it.

I'm not, I'm not saying that I dislike it. I'm

not saying I won't ever watch it. I'm just saying

like, I kept hearing about, you know, Kevin kept

going on about it. Everybody online that I know

kept going on. Oh, it's the best comedy ever.

Oh, this, oh that. And I was like, okay, well,

it's on AMC at like 11 o 'clock at night. I'll

watch it. I made it through the opening monologue

and that was it and I fell asleep. This is just

my sense of humor. This is my style of comedy

to a T. Every part of it I find funny. I'm not

saying it's a bad movie. That's not what I was

saying. Right, right. And I'm not saying that

either. It's just not eyes. And of course the

quote about, my name is an eagle Montoya, you

killed my father, prepared to die. And the six

-fingered man and I got to stop talking about

it. But anyways, I love Manny Patinkin in this

film. And I think, I don't care what you say

about Andre the Giant as far as I, a lot of people

are like, oh, it's just, you know, the big wrestler

guy in this movie, but he was freaking hilarious.

Especially when Kerry Ells is mostly dead in

the film and when Andre the Giant is holding

him up and making him do things and stuff like

that. Dan, what are your thoughts on The Princess

Bride? I guess I love that movie. Be on your

side with this, but I guess when I think of the

Princess Bride, I don't necessarily think comedy

for some reason I just I just always considered

it more I always think of I guess the sword fights

and just the just the format of that movie just

the fantasy aspect So maybe that's I think that's

why when I was making my list it just didn't

come to mind but I'd like you I love I'll just

love the just the When you watch that movie,

it's very old -school Hollywood like the sets

look like sets it Feels very like things look

fake ish, but purposely and also a Billy Crystal

on that is the old crazy man And I forget who

plays his wife, but that's another great scene,

but I guess I think so I guess that's what the

reason it didn't make wireless is because when

I think of think of that film the comedic aspect

isn't something that I think it more of a the

romantic aspect and and it's more action and

fantasy elements and it's comedy but it rightfully

so there are now that you're talking about it

i can think of a lot of comedic moments that

make it deserving for this list i think wallace

sean is like understated like he's i remember

him from the cosby show being one of the neighbors

or whatever but uh his his scene with the uh

the bet that he has with cari alza and then they're

gonna take the uh the poison and is it in this

cup or that cup and they keep going around and

it's just a hilarious moment, and I don't want

to ruin it for people who haven't seen the movie,

but that's probably one of the highlights of

the whole film for me, and how Carrie Ellis tricks

him in that situation. But it was just kind of

that classic thing for me where you have... Wallachian

and Vasini's character. He's like the brains

and he has under the giant has the big brawn

and you know He has a little bit of each style

of enemy that carry elves Wesley has to go against

to Try in his quest to regain buttercups love

or whatever. And so he has to outsmart the one

guy he has to out, you know Sword fight and the

other guy and then he has to go, you know physical

combat with under the giant so it just has a

lot of different things and then you throw Billy

Crystal in there and I love this film. I'm gonna

stop talking though because everyone already

knows how I feel about this film. So let's move

on to the number two on our list and remember

this is a Geekcast radio list so for me I think

a lot of people would be shocked at these two

coming in number one and two but when you think

that it's a list made by geeks I don't think

it should be that much of a shock so number two

our third film from 1994 on the list Kevin Smith

anyone 1994 is clerks No time for love dr. Jones,

I knew Mike would appreciate this entry meh,

yeah No, go ahead go ahead and get your hate

out of the way now hate no I don't hate the movie

I like I like clerks eyes I Just don't take it

as a comedy. I guess I I don't know. The whole

time it's like there's movies that I definitely

think are like their comedies and then there's

movies that like straddle the fence and Clerks

is one that straddles the fence to me, except

I don't think it's like 50 -50. I think it's

more like 40 or 30 percent comedy and more like

just good. Again, if I was pulling things off

the top of my head, I would not think of Clerks

as a comedy. I gotta read some of these things

down here, the list, because it says a lot of

stuff as far as where it's been ranked. We've

already mentioned the total films countdown.

They voted Clerks the 16th greatest comedy film

of all time. Empire Magazine listed Clerks as

the fourth greatest independent film. It's number

33 on Bravo's 100 Funniest Movies. Entertainment

Weekly ranked at 13 in their Cult 25. Films and

21st on their comedy 25 the funniest movies of

the past 25 years An empire also had at 361st

on their 500 greatest movies of all time And

it was nominated for a hundred years a hundred

laughs by AFI, but failed to make the top 100

It's also used in the book 1001 movies. You must

see before you die So apparently I'm the only

one that doesn't really see it as a comedy It's

not funny to me What I don't like that film Okay.

Well, it's not funny to me. I mean, it's just

I think I watched 30 minutes of it and shut it

off Nothing to do with it being black and white

I just it was boring Well, I mean I like Kevin

Smith films I just I find clerks to be extremely

boring I can watch some of his other later films.

I just it's that Particular film. I just I can't

stand it Fair enough. Let's see like better Empire

Jedi Jedi Empire But Jedi had Darth Vader and

the Emperor all Jedi was is a bunch of fucking

muffets So confused as to what we're talking

about right now. No, it's another one of his

tangents. Well, it's a it's a quote from clerks.

Okay Dante Randall asked Dante, which do you

think was better Empire Jedi catch Dante because

he's depressed as Empire Because he's like, oh,

it's it ends on such a down ending. That's all

life is a series of down endings All Jedi had

was a bunch of Muppets Who's Dante? I'm just

a character in the fucking movie. Just kidding.

By the way, this is JT's number one of all time

or on our list Surprised me for a Canadian sense

of humor Coming from a guy who's also defending

it and had it number fourth on his list. Hey,

I like the movie It's not even on my list. I

can bash your shit out of it. It was not on mine

either but It's a movie about best friends who

have different Different lifestyles and different

ways that they view life and within that is a

bunch of comedic moments It's just it's such

a quotable movie. I I guarantee you all of us

have used the phrase I'm not even supposed to

be here today at least once in our lifetime.

Yeah, but it's a but you're suggesting the movie

coined that phrase and It kind of did it. Well,

it may not have coined it, but it made it popular

Sure, I think with that phrase it was just more

so how it it used and how it How it related to

the overall plot and the structure of the film?

I guess i'll mike seems to be in crapton So i'll

i'll jump in here as well because it was on my

list. It's number 20 on my list Um, i'm not i'm

actually not a huge kevin smith fan. I like clerks

and dogma That's pretty much all the his films.

I really enjoy The thing I like about clerks.

I mean steve mentioned it's boring. Um, I guess

I like the fact that is It is a lot of conversations.

1994 was the year of the independent films. He

had Pulp Fiction come out the same year. The

common factor between Pulp Fiction and Clerks

is they're very dialogue heavy. I think Kevin

Smith is a great writer. He's not a really great

director. I think what made Clerks work is that

you can tell it was a personal story that was

something that he really felt. It was bringing

in geek culture. well, something that really

wasn't done before, just having people having

a conversation about something that wasn't necessarily

plot driven, wasn't moving the story forward,

is kind of against screenwriting 101. But that

kind of became a huge thing in the early 90s

and something we see always in comedies today

or movies in general. that's one reason I ranked

it on this list because it has been influential

and the fact that it was an independent film

and how that had a huge impact on the independent

movie movement in the late 90s and how it was

hugely successful and kind of made Kevin Smith

into who he was today. Because if he doesn't

make Clerks, he's not who he is. I mean, I don't

think if he made any of his other movies, it

would nearly be as rememberable. But I think

Clerks was able to appeal to The geeks as well

as like the cinephiles and there you don't really

find many movies that are able to do that Well,

I go ahead. So I was gonna say I agree with everything

dan just said I I really do and I actually um,

I Appreciate clerks and the fact that it started

a thread through all of his movies There's a

there's a certain amount of continuity Especially

around that funeral that they talk about in clerks

Yeah, they go to that that funeral is also present

in mall rats Yeah, and I can't I can't remember

where like the threads get dry if they if they

get dropped or if they get carried through and

some of his other threads The threads continue

from clerks to mall rats to chasing Amy to Jay

and Silent Bob strike back Dogma, okay. I just

wasn't sure how far it ran. They stop at dogma

and then they end they they stop at dogma they're

like yeah this will be the last one or whatever

else and then they have that little if you look

at the end of dogma where Alanis Morissette as

God has closes the closes the Bible or closes

the book it has a little bookmark on the end

of it that meant that he was going to come back

at some point and that's where clerks 2 comes

in so it goes from clerks through all those other

films it does not count Jersey girl it does not

count red state it does not count whatever else

he made or produced or directed or whatever else.

It's just the main films that he's done. Was

it The Skewiverse? Yeah, Viewiskewniverse, yeah.

I appreciate that. I appreciate what it's set

up and what he followed through on. And I agree

with everything that Dan said. It's just, like

I said, it doesn't come across as a comedy to

me. I'm not surprised that it's on our list I'm

not surprised because you know amongst the geek

community or whatever a lot of people love clerks

so I'm not shocked or disappointed that it's

on our list but to me it's not even the funniest

movie that came out that year because that would

be dumb and dumber so I don't know it's just

maybe my style of comedy but I'm not surprised

at all and I'm not shocked or upset that it's

on our list I understand its significance and

its following any other thoughts on clerks before

we get to our number one I'm surprised it is

as high as it is. I mean like you mentioned there

I thought it'd be on the top ten, but I didn't

think it would be number two seems Yeah, that

kind of shocked me a little bit So we've had

planes trains automobiles the mask Vacation Billy

Madison dumb and dumber Monty Python and the

holy grail blazing saddles princess bride and

clerks so far which are leaders to number one

and if you would have asked me to take a guess

that what was going to be our number one before

anybody compile their list just say you know

we're all compiling a list take a guess what's

going to come out number one in comedy this would

never have been my guess may the schwarze be

with you but all in all it does make sense to

me that it is there so apparently we have two

people that are guessing so far so steve what's

your guess spaceballs Space ball and I honestly

I until he said space balls. I had no idea so

I'm guessing it's baseballs Oh, yeah sure it's

on my list and it's not on the honorable mention

so that's Space balls the 1987 film comes in.

Now, it doesn't shock me because this should

resonate well with a geek community and whatnot.

And I didn't even necessarily think of it. It

was one of those that I was battling with if

I was going to vote on it or not. It ended up

not making my list, but it was real close to

making my list. Like Dan mentioned, another Mel

Brooks film. Get a little more John Candy. Rick

Moranis citing, oh my god. But yeah, space balls

here. Number one, Mike, your thoughts. Michael

Blanchard. He's a mug, half man, half dog. You're

just happy because it was your number one. Nobody

else's number one is listed at number one on

our list except for yours. Anyways. No, but this

film, obviously it's spoofing Star Wars and it

does it so well. The Mel Brooks comedy style

has done so well here from the whole thing with

ridiculous speed, ludicrous speed, and whatever

the other one was. What I really love about this

is radar. Radar, it's jammed! It was 10th on

Steve's list, 1st on Mike's list, 9th on JT's

list, and 5th on Mr. Wilson's list. So that is

what got it here, being on so many lists and

so many top 10s. Steve, what are your thoughts

about Spaceballs? I just love that film. It's

so freaking funny Lord Helmet and you know You

know the president the president of the the the

ship and his password is one two three four five

What kind of an idiot and then you know? President

has his password and his ship transforms into

a giant maid with a vacuum sweeper My favorite

part is the one that gets beamed up in his Passes

on the wrong direction. Yeah, that's probably

my favorite part They're just like stupid little

things that you're like how did this ever work?

And why does anyone think this is funny? But

then you're laughing along the same time like

when they're like, oh got to comb the desert

like freaking kidding me right now They got Michael

Winslow in there. Yeah, which is why I said radar

because I lost the beeps the sweeps and the creeps

There's just so many moments that you're not

even sure why they're funny, but you're laughing

at them Dan, what about you? Thoughts on Spaceballs?

As a kid, I mean, I loved Spaceballs growing

up. I remember Pizza the Hut and all the funny

puns they had. As I've kind of grown older, I

think I've grown to appreciate other Mel Brooks

films a little more. Like I mentioned, Blazing

Saddles and Young Frankenstein. I feel they're

superior to Spaceballs. I understand why it's

on here because it's a Mel Brooks comedy which

geeks love and it's referencing Star Wars which

geeks love. Not surprising that the top two films

on our list are very heavily influenced by Star

Wars. But yeah, I don't, I guess, have a love

for it like Mike or Steve do, but I think it's

definitely funny. There are a lot of great little

moments like we mentioned. John Candy is always

great. I'm glad to see Mel Brooks on here. So

if it's going to be... I'm very confused how

Rick Moranis ended up on anything that was in

our top 10. Anyways, that's me. It's not just

Star Wars. It's not just Star Wars, too. You

had Star Trek, a lot of Star Trek references.

You had alien references, Planet of the Apes

references. So, you know, it's across the board

as far as stuff that would appeal to the geek

community. Shit, there's a Looney Tunes reference

in there, too, because of the... The alien that

the chest burster and then he starts dancing

like Michigan day frogs a frog hilarious Funny

funny thing about that that scene with the with

the chest burster the first theater I worked

out when I start working there. They did this

thing called Cinnapalooza and From like three

months out of the year every Saturday we get

a new movie and it'd be it would be a classic

And sometimes the prints would just be trashed

because they were original prints or whatever

but the studio sent us a screener print from

first baseballs and There was a there were tons

of unfinished effects And that the chest burster

scene they actually the whole diner scene they

actually put in there twice Because they didn't

know where they wanted it So it was really like

they had to when we when the theater was packed

for everyone wanting to see it and the manager

had to come in and actually say what they were

going to be seeing because you know unfinished

effects like there there was a The scene where

you know, the the flying RV comes into the the

diner And it's landing that was actually like

a storyboard Scene it was an animatic really

weird hand -drawn stuff. It was so bizarre And

yeah, that's so like that scene with the chest

burst for play in the diner and then something

else happened and then the like and then it happened

again it within like ten minutes so it was just

interesting to see the screen or print so That's

not Rodimus Prime. It's a Winnebago All right,

so that rounds up our top 10 comedies of all

time like I said playing strength automobiles

the mask Vacation Billy Madison Dumb and Dumber,

Monty Python, Holy Grail, Blades and Saddles,

Princess Bride, Clerks, and Spaceballs. We'll

go around the table. Any final thoughts on our

list? What did we get right and what did we get

wrong? I'll start and give you guys a second

to think about things. I mean, I think we got

it right that we have, you know, a Jim Carrey

in there. We have an Adam Sandler. I'm glad John

Candy and Steve Martin found a way in there.

Very happy that Princess Bride got in there.

Not surprised that Spaceballs got in there. My

changes, I would have... flipped Ace Ventura

in instead of the mask and I for damn sure would

have found a way to get What About Bob in there

and Bill Murray represented somewhere. Dan, where

did we get it right or wrong? I'm more happier

with this list than our last list. I think there's

something in here that I think are glaring errors

or something I'm kind of don't think belongs

at all. If I was going to remove anything, I

think I'm along the same lines as you. I probably

would take out the mask and put it in with something

else. Perhaps I would flip flop the Mel Brooks

ordering and maybe put Spaceballs a little lower

and Blazing Saddles a little higher. But other

than that, I think it's pretty solid. overall,

I think we have a different genres within comedy

and a lot of different people like we have the

Actually one one film I should mention that really

surprised I think that deserves to be on here

is it's airplane that I think is probably the

Of all the films we don't have I think that one

is the one that stands out the most Bigger than

more than any of the Bill Murray movies. I would

say so I mean, I love Bill Murray, but I think

considering my biggest surprises that caddyshack's

not on there I would honestly, no disrespect

to Ace Ventura 1, I would honestly take the mask

out and put Caddyshack in its place. Yeah, I

could see that. Anything else that you think

we got right or wrong, Mike? For the most part,

I'm happy with it. I just think that looking

at the honorable mentions list, it's a lot of

my favorite comedy movies. But you but your number

one came in at number one, so you can't come

right, but I'm not I'm not I'm not trying to

take away from that But I'm just saying like

it these lists as as we're doing them between

last episode with the action in this episode

It just surprises me as to what the final list

and what the final tally is like like for the

action one I know we're on coming out, but for

the action one. I probably would have Chose two

very different Arnold movies that were in there

than what we had in there for here I'm pretty

happy with it for the most part. Like I said,

the mask, I'd... The mask probably I could have...

What was it, number 10? Planes, trains, non -obvious.

If we weren't going to be able to switch stuff

out, I would flip -flop those two. I would put

planes, trains in masks place and put mask in

number 10. How about you, Mr. Powers? Where do

you think we got it right or wrong? Well... Since

I didn't make a list I'm not gonna I'm not going

to criticize the work that you guys put into

making a list I don't really disagree with with

the movies that are present on the in the top

ten list But like I said, it's it comes down

to it. Does it do they meet my do they you know?

Is it my taste in comedy? Does it? God what the

hell? I just heard a funny noise and I just I

did too. That's my cat. That's my cat. No. Damn

it. What were some of the ones that you would

probably put at the top of your list? Anything

right off the top of your head? No, because any

time I start thinking about favorite movies,

the one that jumps to the top of the list is

American Beauty. And that's not I'm not saying

it's a comedy or anything like that I'm saying

like the minute I start Start thinking about

favorite movies is the first one that comes to

my mind But no, I I'm pretty good with the list

But I'm I like you I'm kind of shocked that Bill

Murray is not represented in here in any way

shape or form I'm fine with that But it wasn't

Charlie's Angels But then again when I when I

sit back and I think about movies that I've seen

with Bill Murray that I've generally laughed

at Ghostbusters So I you know that probably wouldn't

have ended up in this list for me. It would be

what about Bob Groundhog Day and Caddyshack?

See I watched I watched Groundhog's day like

a year or so ago, and it just The later half

of the movie got really dark And then you don't

like Bill Murray No, not really I Don't get his

his comedy I find him bland and annoying What

about stripes? That is an exception. I would

say that I like that. Steve, what did we get

right or wrong? I think everything was pretty

well. The only thing I didn't really, I think

could have been replaced with some better films

were Clerks and Monty Python. I agree Caddyshack

should have been in there just because of all

the different comedic actors of the past that

are in it. And then I would have liked to have

seen Ace Ventura to some capacity in that list.

Yeah, me too. I mean, yeah, the order could have

been a little bit different as far as how the

top ten was laid out that we did ultimately get,

but I can't say that I'm disappointed with the

films that did get in there. Me neither. So that

is our comedy list Mike Do you want to give a

segue into what's coming up next as far as our

AFI countdown goes? next time in episode 43 we

will be talking about war films a genre that

I actually only made a top 10 for because I haven't

seen many war films and I Didn't want to make

a list that I hadn't seen movies of cuz oh, I

think it proves our sense of humor going from

comedy to war Change it up a little bit and I

have a feeling we're gonna we're gonna have some

discussions with that because I don't know like

being the We're gonna have plenty of discussions

with the war films cuz we're gonna bring in a

ringer from a certain Canadian website because

he said he wanted to be on that well also because

I have like war films walk a very fine line with

me because I Don't know maybe it's the history

major or whatever, but if you don't if you're

not And if you're not if you're telling a bunch

of lies in your war film, it really pisses me

off So if anybody says anything good about something

like Pearl Harbor the movie I may lose it You

might not want to listen to episode 95 of M wire

then So that's what's coming up next yeah, we're

gonna talk about war films next time what else

are we talking about in March? In March we've

got the war films. We've got sports March yeah,

those are the two for March war and sports So

that'll be very very interesting to see what

We come up with I'll finish your sentences Exactly.
