and beloved, your kids still can't stop singing
the movie's hit song. So get ready, because we're
about to get this one stuck in your head, again.
Welcome to GeekCast Radio. This is episode 80.
I am one of your hosts, TF2 and Mike. Ladies
and gentlemen, it has been one year. I'm not
sure if it's one year to the day or anything
else, but it's been one year. It's been 20 episodes
since we did GeekCast Radio episode 60. In that
episode, we had the first annual GCR awards.
We are back this time around for the second annual
GCR awards. And joining me is movie role Dan.
Hello, sir. How's it going? It's going. Steve
Megatron hello hello yes and why don't you Steve
talk about and Dan as well because ladies gentlemen
I'll be upfront and honest I only filled the
ballot out I had I had a little bit of input
on what went into the awards this year but I
am NOT an awards person I care when it comes
to this is our thing but in general when it comes
to award stuff I don't I have too much other
stuff going on. Steve, why don't you walk us
through the expansion and the changes that happened
from last year to this year? Well, I will say
this. Last year, it was an experiment on our
part, and then we were trying to put what we
felt were not necessarily the most popular, but
the most diverse and memorable. variety of whatever
content it was, whether it be film, whether it
be animation, whether it be TV. And last year
we pretty much did those categories and then
GCR and podcasts. And granted there were a lot
more categories in film and TV than this year,
but we got a little bit of flack because some
shows didn't show up and so on and so forth,
but it wasn't necessarily because of you know,
the fact we didn't want to put them on there
was just the fact that we could only put so many.
And, you know, it was kind of a list that we
were trying to put together and there really
wasn't time to throw anything else in there.
Whereas this year, we went a completely different
route. Instead of having it straight voting from
the get -go, this was a fill -in -the -blank
ballot for the nominees for every category. We
slimmed it down. We added Video games we added
comics and we added podcasts or videocasts that
were non GC RN So it was kind of a different
mix and allowed us to have the same amount of
categories with or same amount of subcategories
represented but more diverse areas covered like
the having the TV animation and comics, games,
etc. So having the fill -in -the -blank method
allowed the fans, listeners, and everybody that
watches all of the shows that they watch to nominate
their own favorites without having to conform
to any kind of list that was pre -put together.
And we did that until the nominees... Stopped
coming in and then we flipped it and we we took
the top five of all those categories and made
it a drop -down selection to decide which are
you know, which ones we thought were the best
out of those given nominees and I have to say
that Think that this method seemed to work a
little better this year than doing the street
voting because then it allowed One less coding
on my behalf and to it This was actually a lot
simpler to throw together than the voting But
it also allowed for an exportable format to compile
the entire thing instead of trying to keep count
the entire time so that kind of helped and Some
of the the selections were kind of interesting
seeing how close and how far and the diversity
that was in there in some areas lack thereof.
So it definitely was interesting this time around,
and I think that people will be for the most
part pleased with the outcome. Very cool. Going
into this, Dan, did you expect anything or you...
I mean... What were you looking forward to most
seeing the new, different, expanded version of
the awards this year? Well, I guess the benefit
of that is that the nominees are not coming from
us, so no one to blame but yourselves, I guess.
No, I was interested in seeing the overall opinions
and just to see the thought process of the GCRN
listeners. And I think one of the best things
we did this year was like Steve mentioned adding
in the different awards for other podcasts and
stuff like that, which was great to see because
we got a lot of great reactions, especially from
In Session Film and Simplistic Reviews that did
a pretty awesome Battle of the Bands video that
you should check out if you haven't. That was
cool to see. That was pretty great. I loved that.
And plus it was Ferris Bueller that they were
mimicking. So it just made it that much better
for me. Yeah, I think I think simplistic reviews
probably should get their own special award for
most outstanding Promotion for their their nomination.
Definitely. It's also a great podcast So if you
have a chance to check it out, but yeah So and
the funny thing is since the awards this happened
about two and a half three weeks ago The awards
that already ended and whatever else voting was
done Since the awards in session film is the
newest syndicated member of the GC So next year
they'll be going into the the syndicated content
instead of the non GC are in content Yeah, we
drafted them into the own our own team. So yeah,
we assimilated them is what we did really So
we get it started. Yes So I have two copies of
this pulled up on my screen one That is the actual
order that the entire list went in which is what
I'm going to actually follow That way because
the Excel I haven't laid out it's just it's easier
So starting out we had the television main category
The first subcategory under that was the best
TV drama and the nominees were Boardwalk Empire
Game of Thrones Hannibal True Detective and House
of Cards It was interesting because I when we
put the categories together like the different
Different ways people assume drama. So that's
kind of it was kind of funny. So I'm curious
to see what the award actually goes to. Well,
it went to Game of Thrones. That's honestly no
surprise. With 45 votes. Interesting. How close
was it? The lowest number was seven. And the
next, the second highest number was 17. Wow,
I'm surprised True Detective didn't get more
votes, but I guess You know, it's definitely
a more It's a certain type of show that you know,
it's hard to get into for some people very heavy
material So and I know Game of Thrones has it's
pretty steady fan base And I think that's probably
the one we got most slack of last year for not
nominating was Game of Thrones So, you know,
it's it is coming back strong. I guess we're
not a not getting nominated last year. Oh Yeah
Yeah, it was kind of surprising seeing what went
into some of these categories and in here I wasn't
really surprised but I was kind of surprised
that Hannibal and House of Cards Intra Detective
didn't get more votes than it did. I was surprised
Hannibal got even a nomination because of how
low ratings they have. I love that show. But
in Port Arc Empire too because it's one that's
not necessarily talked about all that much, but
I do know it's like it's last season now, so
maybe some people had it on their hands. I was
gonna say, I thought that show ended, yeah, I
was gonna say. Yeah, it just ended not too long
ago. So moving into the best TV comedy category,
we have Big Bang Theory, Brooklyn Nine -Nine,
Parks and Rec, Silicon Valley, and Veep. Well,
we all know which one I'm voting for. The only
one you watch? Out of those, yeah. Pretty much.
That's the same thing with me. Now, let me just
say before Steve reveals the winner here, a lot
of the TV shows that are nominated in these two
categories, the previous category here and this
one here, Veep is a premium cable show, right?
Yep, it's on HBO. Yeah, see, that's the thing.
I'm not going to sit here and pay HBO fees just
to watch a show of good television. You know
what I mean? I don't know. Could always do HBO
Go. It's better than paying for cable. Of course,
usually, if you get a cable package, they give
it to you for free. Yeah, but that's what I'm
saying. Has Go become an independent thing? It's
separate, but 99 % of the time cable companies
are giving you HBO for free. Right. It will be
a separate thing in a few months. It's going
to be about five bucks a month. Oh, okay. It's
completely livable. It's like having Netflix,
but with bigger budgets. Just HBO content. I
pretty much the only network I really watch tends
to be HBO, so I'm pretty much paying for cable
to get HBO. Well, maybe you can cut your cable
bill in half and just get the $5 subscription
for when it goes by itself. Yeah, but the world's
ruled by Comcast, so that can never happen. So
who won the award? Big Bang Theory. With 49 for
the votes, and the lowest voting on this was
Silicon Valley at 5. Hmm. Do you think that's
just because it's a new show? I don't think it's
that new. It's new It just had its first season
inside the season starts in a few not that long
Probably it's also like you said a premium channel
So nobody has access to it being bang theory
has it's like the like the best rating show right
now I I personally would have probably went with
Silicon Valley or V those are both really strong
actually really like Brooklyn 99 as well It's
actually a really well done show. It's a That
I think I underestimated but when I started watching
it, it's rather funny Andy Samberg is quite good
and Andre Brower is Like genius on that show
his deadpan delivery is pretty phenomenal. So
Yeah, honestly, I probably would rank big man
theory fifth and all those in categories But
you know, I can understand why it won. It's got
its fan base I've said this before on many other
podcasts that we do here at GCN Everyone seems
to think Big Bang Theory is just supposedly a
geek show that makes fun of geek culture. It
really has. I mean, it does. It pokes fun. It
has gotten better periodically, though. Over
the seven to eight years that it's been on, it
has built its characters so well. As of this
recording, we just watched the episode where
they deal with... The fact that the actress Carol
Anne Susie who played Howard Wallowitz his mother
on the show She had passed away in real life.
So they're just now at season 8 By now it's it's
more of a character -driven show than just a
show for laughs anymore. I All right. Well, I
would have to agree to disagree. But yeah I mean,
it's character driven in like the old sitcom
way I just find its jokes are just all over taking
stereotypes and over blowing them compared to
something like I like let me Ask you Dan. When
was the last time you saw an episode? What season?
last season Okay, and I like I see what you're
saying maybe for characters if you're thinking
old -school sitcom but I would say in Silicon
Valley in its first season has more interesting
characters and because my issue with bring bang
theory is that his characters are very They're
fine. They're like old school sitcom characters.
They're just all some sort of stereotype. These
are the jokes that they do It's like a show come
out in the 90s Exactly. It's like it's basically
the jokes. It's friends, but instead of making
sex jokes, they make jokes about geek culture
They're they're like a lot of the plot lines
are similar, which is fine. But I like, you know,
I personally I prefer Silicon Valley because
I think it's a little bit more interesting. I
like the more the satirical edge that Mike judge
says and I think it's a little bit more interesting
in what they do but I think you know Big Bang
Theory has its niche and it does it well, but
uh, I would I I think you know sitcoms like that
can only go so far because you're appealing to
such a broad audience but with something like
V or So like we mentioned all you're in Brooklyn
99 I think they are doing a little something
a little bit different but I would say if you
do like Big Bang Theory I would say, you know,
you probably would like Brooklyn 99 because they're
Similar type of comedy Like but it's more it's
not geek culture in Brooklyn 99. It's even more,
you know, like Almost police Academy esque and
for the modern era minus slapstick though Next
up what do we got Steve best TV sci -fi Which
is agents of shield doctor who The Flash, Orphan
Black, and Z Nation. I didn't even know Z Nation
was a thing. Yeah, it is. I didn't even think...
Wait, Flash isn't science fiction. It technically
is. Anyways, who won the award? Flash, at 38
votes. And the lowest was Z Nation at 1. It's
probably the guy who made Z Nation. That's not
surprising either. I mean it's got I would say
honestly right now I think flash is a better
show than at least this season of arrow which
has been kind of The let down but it's been pretty
strong first season for that show I Am I while
I like agents of shield it's I don't consider
it quite sci -fi enough at this point to warrant
it a sci -fi show Know they are heading in that
direction, but it's it. I don't consider it one
flash I see more of a sci -fi show and I understand,
you know doctor who and some of the other ones
are too I'm actually kind of surprised that Doctor
who people didn't vote doctor who yeah to win
because they are usually very rabid fanboys I
feel like with this recent doctor though it it
I feel like there's a little bit more apprehension
To him the Peter Capali. I feel like it's not
I don't nearly hear as much chatter about this
last season than The recent ones i'd not necessarily
that's been negative, but I know you know It's
uh, it's a different type of doctor for a lot
of people speaking as someone who doesn't watch
that show Just going based upon fan reaction.
So that could have You know, I think a lot of
people weren't or a little bit disappointed with
the last season of the show but I definitely
have to say that I'm glad flash one being a newcomer
and The fact that the show seems to be very well
written in in the the way that they are trying
to tackle everything and kind of give it a new
twist and It's I just find it very interesting
Out of all the superhero shows on right now.
I think it's my favorite I agree with that Yeah
flashes It's very refreshing. It's it's nice
to finally see After you know four or five years
as somewhat upbeat Superhero show on the CW.
I mean don't get me wrong. I love arrow but arrow
Arrow is Without Batman right arrow is bet is
the Batman esque whereas flash is more of like
of Superman it well, yeah, it's the flash but
I mean it's It's a lot more light -hearted than
arrow. Yes. There are serious moments and emotional
moments in flash but at this point in because
I've now been watching arrow as it airs and at
this point Arrow is nothing but emotional stuff
There they have built themselves not into a corner
But they have built themselves into a storyline
with everything that has happened in the first
two seasons now in season three That it is running
on all emotions and there are a couple of puns
here and there but it's a pretty damn dark show
Yeah, I think you know flash has the benefit
I feel of those the flash very much Fits into
the more CW around in a lot of ways like the
characters feel more CW ish Almost to a to its
def to its testament at some times, especially
even the musical choices I'm like clearly this
was a CW choice, which I think is why it's getting
better ratings than that of era but I like I
think you make a good point Mike that is a little
bit more upbeat and Very much especially with
recent events with the one character becoming
reporter. It does seem like it's like yeah We're
just gonna be kind of Superman, but not quite
We're gonna say that It's got that kind of tomorrow
people vibe to it of the musical choice and A
lot of how it's kind of set up It's just but
with the flash and DC Comics characters instead.
Yeah, I mean Most of it's drama is relationship
based when most of the drama Arrow is more character
based and more dealt with in more serious issues
of, you know, life and death situations, which
I think lends to the more kind of light feel
that it has, which can be, which is, you know,
good. It's an own way. It depends on what, I
guess, what your tastes are. And I think it was
really good that they didn't just start flash
by itself. The fact that arrow was its back door
and it worked well mixing the two. and having
the two different character sets kind of interact,
because throughout Flash's first season we've
had a couple of times where they've crossed over.
You know, not all of the characters from Arrow
or all of the characters from Flash, they did
that once, but Felicity from Arrow had come over
to Flash one time by herself and whatever else.
Flash is just an interesting show because it
shows you the world. I know there have been other
Flash television series. But this to me, this
is what I know from watching DC animated movies
and the DC animated universe cartoon series and
stuff like that. As far as how the characters,
how we're seeing them, it's different in Flash,
but it's still yet similar. Because I honestly
think after this past week's episode, they're
working towards doing Flashpoint. The Flashpoint
paradise. Yeah, they've clearly run into that.
And it's not a bad thing at all. It's an interesting
way to bring DC Comics fans in and say, hey,
look, if you've read this or if you've seen this
animated movie or if you've done this or done
that, you're going to get this. And the whole
aspect of time travel, who knows how many flashes
are actually going to show up in this show eventually.
So, anyway. Anyhow, moving on to the next category,
we have best action adventure. which contains
Arrow, Sherlock, Walking Dead, Blacklist, and
Game of Thrones. Wait, why is Game of Thrones
in two categories? Because the same reasons some
other shows are going to show up again in the
next two categories. Because that's what people
voted, and some of these can be considered multi
-categories. Um, with these choices, it's either
gonna come down to The Walking Dead or Game of
Thrones, probably. Because everybody except me
loves The Walking Dead. I'm not a fan of it either,
but... Thank God. Actually, it's funny. A couple
days ago... My mom said, oh my god, I'm so sick
of that zombie show. And I'm like, wait, which
one? The Walking Dead. What the hell is the point
of that show? And if my 60 -year -old mother
can't get into it, then I don't know what the
hell's wrong with this world. Yeah, I know. That's
their base, the 60 -year -old mothers. I think
that's what they're shooting for. You know what
I mean. No, not really. But who won the category?
It was scary. It was zombie people. They're not
nice. They just eat people. Yeah So anyways the
winner of this category is surprisingly arrow
Wow wait about it is 26 votes Followed closely
by Walking Dead at 20 Game of Thrones at 19 Sherlock
at 15 and blacklist at 12 Surprise blacklist
got any other than you and I Steve honestly Yeah,
I mean it's a little surprising I felt this last
season of arrow has been rather weak. I'm not
an arrow lover Honestly, I think it's a honestly
the flash and arrow to me or those shows I consider
background shows that they're better They get
the better They're much better the less I tried
to watch them or pay attention to them because
there's a lot of things in them that are kind
of ridiculous and I don't know this last season
of arrow I feel like they've just struggled in
a lot of ways especially with like the flashback
story and it's become a lot less interesting
with Less focus on the slayed character and uh,
so i've and then when they brought vinnie jones's
character in like rick and how awful awful like
that character was in that entire storyline of
the fact that you're going to remove police officers
from a Huge section of the city because of a
couple hostages which makes no logistical sense
whatsoever So yeah, I feel like you think you
mentioned it a little while ago mike where they
wrote themselves in the corner And I do feel
like they're just they're they're have a certain
No, they're going in and I'm able to kind of
get out of it and they it just seems really repetitive
at this point They have the same storylines the
same arguments over and over again about the
characters that are trying to become heroes who
aren't ready yet and that's just like to me it
needs something refreshing and I Hopefully it
like within the next few episodes will get there
You've seen this week's episode, right Steve?
No, but that doesn't matter to me this week they
work back around a slate again that's all i'll
say about it but this week they did work back
around a slate again because um thea and ollie
are on the island and i whatever i enjoy arrow
i do i don't enjoy it as much as i do the flash
or the blacklist or any other show that i'm currently
watching if i had to Put arrow on a number scale.
It's probably number eight out of ten shows that
I watch Yeah, I think on the out of the categories
we had your best action or adventure show I probably
would say Sherlock, you know what? I don't know
if you would consider that action adventure,
but they people did but it's harder to compare
since that's three episodes 90 minutes each compared
to like, you know complete series, but It's the
most consistency. I think it's been that was
the best season of Sherlock yet. So and I would
say Probably my favorite out of all those next
to Game of Thrones and walking dead and I don't
walk watch the blacklist So I couldn't say anything
about that one Next one Steve, so the next category
is best new show The nominees are the flash Gotham
last week tonight Silicon Valley and true detective
It's gonna come down to flash Because I don't
think anybody voted Gotham if they did it wasn't
enough Don't get me wrong. I I do enjoy Gotham
from what it is, but it could be so much better
than what it is I Stopped watching after the
third episode so I can't of what Gotham Gotham
You're not miss much It has gotten better, but
now that they've gotten the announcement of a
season two But now that seems like they're kind
of jumping into the constantly introducing villains
that are going to play a role later when they're
old so it's they're all kids at this point so
it's it's kind of annoying there's there's really
not much there so they're kind of throwing the
farm at it now I said this was it last week's
altered geek or a week before you know there's
a point in these later episodes here in season
one for Gotham where Penguin and the Riddler
come face to face. I would have rather had them
Do it team up then just go their separate ways,
but that didn't happen. Whatever. Who's the winner?
flash 34 Wow Go flash go followed by Gotham at
22 really last night at 15 true detective at
13 and Silicon Valley at 4 I was surprised Gotham
got as many votes as it did I Would have expected
any of the other ones to get more votes than
Gotham. Yeah, I Wouldn't went last week tonight
because I love the show but uh, it's definitely
a lot different compared to everything else on
that list So that's yeah, not surprising flash
wouldn't make sense. So All right. What's the
next award? best returning show Which is down
between arrow doctor who? Game of Thrones, Orphan
Black, and The Walking Dead. Let me guess. Arrow
won. You're a very astute man. It was either
Arrow, Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, or Walking
Dead. Yeah, it was one of the four. It's one
of those five that are in there. It's just, we're
not sure which one. You should play the lottery,
Mike. I think you have a system, don't you? It'll
change. This is audio folks. So no one can see
me flipping Dan off Just like nobody can see
the nominees and the in the winners except for
me on my second monitor So so arrow did one yes
at 34 votes Followed by walking dead at 21 Game
of Thrones at 17. Dr. Who at 12 and orphan black
at 9 Wow It is an interesting selection like
I almost would Would almost say that walking
or not walking dead, but Game of Thrones probably
could have taken that Well, yeah, like cuz walking
dead has been pretty weak As far as like my wife
is concerned cuz she watches it and she said
it's been kind of meh the last season and a half
I would actually strongly disagree with that.
But um, I would say part of that too considering
when we're voting for just the fact that arrows
on TV, you know and Game of Thrones is like off
at this moment. So people may be It's been a
lot of that show. Yeah, it's not in fresh in
your minds It does seem like it's been like two
years since the last time that's been on so that
I mean that probably helps arrow the fact that
it's currently on air and Like we mentioned like
premium channels do are at a disadvantage since
you have less access to them Legally, I should
say yeah Hey, I don't have DVR or regular cable
all of mine come from an alternative to Location
I did buy a digital tuner. So that does help
me watch regular like my basic cable But you
know, this is a funny little sidetrack that makes
sense to what Steve is saying here You really
should invest in one of those rabbit TVs. I know
literally I bought these this GE $15 rabbit ear
thing that plugs in and it's a digital tuner
and it's a 25 mile radius and I actually live
smack in the middle of a bunch of different radio
or TV stations, so I get ABC, I get NBC, CBS,
Fox, and CW. Which is all the channels I watch.
And they're free. The rabbit TV I'm talking about
is from Telebrands. It's a USB. Gives you access
to over 5 ,000 free internet TV stations. So
it's computer based yeah, but the thing is you
leave your computer on and have something to
stream to your TV That's true. This is not powered.
It's just plugged in it plugged into the TV I
should say but Moving on to the next category
we have cartoons and Under the best new cartoon
we have it this top five Bojack Horseman, I've
never heard of this It's on Netflix Mike Tyson
mysteries, which just sounds like an oxymoron
Yeah, it pretty much is At Star Wars Rebels the
7b in Wally Kazam, which Wally Kazam. I've never
heard of either Getting assumed Star Trek rebels
or Star Wars Rebels one Yeah, I would have to
say probably Star Wars You would be correct Star
Wars Rebels rings in at 55 votes. I think it's
one of the highest out of any of the categories
of I think or one of the highest I should say
but With two ties below it Bojack Horseman and
Mike Tyson mysteries get 14 votes each and the
70 and Wally Kazam get two votes each What? Okay,
no, no, no, hold on folks Okay, seriously Yeah,
no one besides me and Doug Abel from talking
about my generation watch the 7d the 7d has Kevin
Michael Richardson Maurice LaMarche Billy West
Scott what does it even what does it even air
on? Disney it's on Disney and Disney XD. I don't
get either of those so I don't I don't okay and
so is where rebels I download so Here's the well,
you need to start downloading 70. Here's the
thing the 70 for them I you know I'll be the
first to admit when I first saw the title of
it without even seeing anything any images or
anything what it was supposed to be about It
being on the Disney Channel I didn't it didn't
sound like a Disney Channel show to me because
that you know Me and my old man dirty mind didn't
think of that. But anyway The 70 takes place
30 years before the seven dwarfs meet Snow White.
So it's set in a place called Jollywood. It has
Jess Harnell and Kelly Osborne as the villains
called the Glooms. And it has, you know, the
seven dwarfs and they do funny adventures and
different things and it's really, really fun.
It's executive produced by Tom Ruger. It has
him... He obviously has done Tiny Toon Adventures,
Animaniacs. Basically the entire crew from Animaniacs
is pretty much back. Randy Rogel, Sherry Stoner,
Deanna Oliver, Shay Fontana. All those people
that worked on Animaniacs are working on this.
It is an amazingly funny show for both kids and
adults. Okay then. But does it have Mike Tyson?
No. Then it's not a mystery of why it lost. Asshole.
Or Star Wars, I should say, since that one. Yes.
I figured Star Wars was going to take it. I didn't
expect the 7 -D to beat Star Wars, but I expected
the 7 -D to at least beat Wally Kazam in whatever
Netflix show that was. I've never watched Bojack
Horseman, but I've heard really good things about
it, but I've yet to partake. So what's the next
category? Yes, thank you. Best returning cartoon,
which includes Adventure Time, Archer, Bob's
Burgers, Legend of Korra, and Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles. Even though Season 3 has been
somewhat of a downer until I get back to New
York, I'm hoping Turtles won. You would be correct.
Turtles won at 41 votes, followed by Bob's Burgers
at 14, Legend of Korra and Archer tied at 13,
and Adventure Time at 6. I'm surprised Archer
and Bob's burgers didn't get more only because
I know that people kind of clamor for that I'm
honestly surprised adventure time is last and
play in last place because everyone I know on
the internet Oh adventure times great. It's so
awesome. You should watch it It's weird worse
to talk in I've never watched any of the show
so really can't say I have no idea. I only watch
turtles so Next one all right new this is one
is the video game category Okay, best new release
of 2014 Includes Borderlands the pre sequel That's
just sounds weird Mario Kart Shadow of Mordor
Super Smash Brothers Wii U Titanfall I have no
idea. I would guess either Mario Kart or Smash
Brothers, but Titanfall was pretty big. Well,
I will put this one to bed. Smash Brothers beat
it. But not by as far as you would think. Two?
No, three. But Smash Brothers won at 24, Mario
Kart 21. Shadow of Mordor is at 14 Borderlands
is at 11 and Titanfall is at 6 I'm kind of surprised
like I mean I'm really out of the world of gamers
at this point But it wasn't destiny like a huge
game. Maybe it wasn't really good But I remember
it sold like a trillion copies, but I heard it
was really good And I know a lot of people that
still play it now. It's just it was kind of I
Don't know I guess I guess they wrote that in
yeah, maybe it was just the people who visit
GCRN aren't are more into the old -school, you
know, Nintendo type of gaming so So yeah, that
was I'm glad Smash Brothers one because that's
my favorite game out of anything Nintendo right
now, but The cameos alone are great Mega Man
and a lot of the characters that showed up in
our wars tournament actually were in this game
banjo and kazooie well no not them actually it
was um whatever the guy was it the kickboxer
guy i can't remember his name oh the guy from
punch out yes lil mac yeah lil mac he was in
it too but uh they can't punch anything out he
didn't kick it um oh that was bad pun uh best
new console which kind of Teeters into you know
2013 2014, but I Did that generation basically
so the ps4 Wii U Xbox one? I Would say it's between
ps4 and Xbox one, but I don't know out of those
two one would have won because each camp has
their fan base I would think with the fact that
The two e games are your number one and two for
last category that it might be with you, but
I don't know Steve well the winner of this one
is the ps4 at 30 Huh the Xbox one took 24 the
Wii U at 20 It wasn't that like I wasn't too
bad. Actually. No wasn't too bad I thought you
know the Wii U would have gone wee -wee -wee
all the way home, but yeah 20 ain't bad So, moving
on into comics, which I know very little of.
Well, let me preface just a little bit here,
folks. Last year when we threw the awards together
and the first annual G -Sheron Awards, I didn't
feel comfortable putting anything together for
comics because I had only been doing the pull
bag for... two years at that point but I still
didn't like I was pretty much extreme even though
I usually am extremely narrow -minded but like
when I was reading comics last year I was pretty
much stuck in DC mode since then DC has pissed
me off so royally that I've pretty much expanded
my horizons on comics since then so it's gonna
be interesting here to see what wins and what
and where other things place but go ahead Steve
first award sir The first award is Best Storyline,
which contains Forever Evil, Lumberjanes, Saga,
Sex Criminals, One Weird Trick, and Transformers.
Now, next year we need to decide which Transformers
it is, because I know it means the current IDW,
but there are two books. Two very different storylines
Yeah, they were there when putting them together
there were like a Like a variety of different
ways people put it erode it so it kind of just
lumped it into one Transformers they get that
last nomination Yeah, I mean I think next year
we need to have people specify Transformers the
main ongoing which actually used to be called
robots in disguise or Transformers more than
meets the eye I would love to read Lumberjanes.
I have not had a chance to yet Sex criminals
is amazing. It just is it's not for everybody
though I agree. I think yeah one thing we agree
on six criminals is a great book I'm curious
to see what one transformers at 23 That depresses
me Is that 18 saga at 15 Sex criminals at five
lumberjanes at three In other words, it probably
should go in reverse order and we would have
been all set Well, I mean saga honest I is by
far the best out of all the well I haven't read
blubbered lumberjanes, but I can't really say
to that. I like sex criminals, but I Saw good
to me is the best thing in comics, right? Well
one of the best things in comics right now. So
that's I haven't read it yet So I can't speak
for that. Like I said if we had specified Which
transformers book it was whether it was the the
regular titled transformers Which was formerly
robots in disguise or what if it was transformers
more than meets the eye Which is written by James
Roberts and done by Alex Milne on art. I could
see why that would win but Yeah, I think that's
one thing we'll need to improve on next year
for nominations. Well, it was user voted. So
I know. But when we like when you had the the
form to fill out next year, we can put on there
for best storyline or whatever else or best best
returning. Whatever. If voting transformers write
title, write subtitle or something or other.
So. All right. What's the next award? Best new
series which includes cowl deadly class miss
Marvel Punisher and Rocket raccoon I Know you
love deadly class Dan. I do like that little
class rocket raccoon is pretty good, too And
that thing sold like a trillion copies so and
rocket raccoon is pretty popular. So I don't
know is that I'm not sure it won that But Punisher's
up there, too Well Rocket raccoon took it away
at 22 bucks It's a good book. It's I it's I love
Scottie Young his art his I love his style Especially
he's got a lot of great covers. So I do like
that book I like that in class a little bit more,
but they're very different types of stories So
I could you know, it's kind of young is a good
guy. So I think he's deserving of the award So
moving on, we have the best - Wait, wait, wait,
wait, wait. Where did, where did Cowell place?
I just have to know. Twelve. Wait, what? Middle.
So it's not dead last? No, it was in the middle.
Okay, thank god. This Marvel was 18, Cowell was
at 12, Punisher at 11, and Deadly Class at 4.
One of those for me, so, you know. Not surprising,
it's a, it's a, it's not the most - Doesn't have
the name recognition a lot of a lot of the other
categories there But I think it you know, maybe
don't get its own TV series because that's the
thing comics do now You never know so The next
one is the best continuing series We have Batman's
saga sex criminals. I can't say criminals correctly
tonight. I don't know why I say criminals Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles and Uncanny Avengers. I
need to get my ends. How much have you been drinking?
I've been drinking Coca -Cola. It's just great.
So yeah. Maybe Batman because it's just a name.
I feel like people are just going with the most
popular name. So probably keep it going for this
one, too. I hope not because Batman is such a
letdown last year. Oh God all that zero year
origin story crap that made no sense Oh, we're
gonna travel six years into the new 52s past
and then anyway Less ranting more reaction. Yeah,
I'm really hoping that turtles one it was At
29 turtles one. Yes I just I actually just started
reading. I just read the first five issues of
that series. So Of the idw series. Yeah What
do you think so far? It's pretty good. Enjoy
it. It's a good time. Um I like I said, I probably
I can't it's you know, so far. It's just the
origin So it's not like, you know anything a
little anything i'm I do like the art. I I don't
know. Hopefully it gets a little bit better I
don't hate it, but it's it's good. It's enjoyable.
It's probably Uh step up for most turtles all
the old turtle stuff. Um But i don't know i'm
kind of was hoping saga would win but yeah The
turtle's book changes artists every storyline,
right? Yeah, so the next time i'm trying to think
it was first I think the next time from where
you're reading maybe issue 13 Or 19 the art will
change somewhere around there. Yeah, it's I definitely
like the you know, how they're building the mythology
of it's been kind of cool so far So i'm looking
forward to read more of it Oh, yeah, and I will
say this coming out next month. I think it's
March 18th is the IDW IDW collection volume one
for turtles which holds the first 12 issues of
the series along with the four micro series issues
for the four turtles and they are placed in the
book in story order so it will make more sense
and granted the hardcover is 50 bucks, but if
you read them in story order It's much more enjoyable
than just reading issue to issue like if I if
I read the first five issues and then I went
and read the first four Micro series it kind
of breaks it up. But if you read it in story
order, it's so much better. Anyway Next category
sir. Next one is best artist which contains Chip
Sudarsky Fiona Staples Greg Capolo Scotty young
Stewart Eminen It's probably going to come down
to Young, Capolo, or Zdarsky. It was Capolo at
27. It's well deserved. I will say that's the
one thing about the Batman title that remains
consistent to this day when Capolo is doing issues.
His art is amazing. Yeah, I don't read Batman,
but... I do like MMM stuff like he's consistent.
He does so much and uh, Fiona Staple's art for
Saga is just it's gorgeous like the color she
uses is just Uh, it's nothing else quite out
there. Like it makes the book stand out. So I
know nothing I'm only familiar with one name.
So next category next category is best writer
Which is brian cavon? Greg Rucka? That's a G
.I. Joe name, I think. Jonathan Hickman, Kyle
Higgins, and Scott Snyder. You put the double
S in there, he's probably gonna win. So, the
winner is Scott Snyder at 19. Figures. Well,
what was second? Brian K. Vaughn. Wow, that's
that's interesting he break Yvonne his like his
career lasts like 20 or so years is like Up there
with anyone like his series after series has
been pretty phenomenal. So Pretty cool and Johnson
Hickman's actual no sludge either. I pretty much
liked anything. He's done. He's actually third.
Yeah, I Don't know the other guy. So Kyle was
last, right? Oh, okay was last Wow. That's strange
to me. Well, that's strange to me that Rucka
was last because Rucka has written on a lot of
good things. He did an amazing run on Punisher.
He wrote a bunch of Batman stuff back in the
day. Yeah. But don't remind that it's from last
year. So I don't know if he had a lot of stuff
going on last year. They're ready. What do we
got next? Next we got best overall publisher,
which is Dark Horse DC IDW image and Marvel Probably
DC or image. I Think Marvel and DC are gonna
duke it out They always do you both are wrong
Wow Number one is IDW. Ah Really? Yes At 20 which
it's pretty freaking close other than one in
here You guys are right in the sense that DC
and Marvel will duke it out at 17 They tied they
tied There is no better series Images at 16 and
Dark Horses at 3 probably because they just lost
Star Wars So what does IDW have besides the Turtles?
Do they have any original titles or is it just
licensed property? G .I. Joe, Star Trek. I think
it's a lot of licensed stuff for the most part.
It's mostly licensed stuff, but that's where
they excel though. It's really where they excel.
They have Transformers, Turtles, G .I. Joe. They
just started Edward Scissorhands this year. They
do a lot of the Cartoon Network stuff. Do they
have any original titles? ones that they've created
themselves. I am not sure. They have Star Trek.
They have, coming up in March, they'll have Jamming
the Holograms. Again, it's nothing original.
I know, but I'm just saying that - I'm not saying
it's a bad thing. I mean, like, I'm reading The
Turtles and it's good, but I, you know, doing
a licensed property is hard because, you know,
there's been so many crappy ones, but I'm less
likely to read a licensed comic just because
it's been burned so much and - I'm more impressed
when someone creates like an original property,
which I think image does really well, probably
better than anyone right now. And honestly, I
think they by far are the best company when it
comes to creative content at this moment. So
I mean, I don't read a lot of stuff to be fair,
so I really can't. But based upon my experience.
I'll say this IDW mainly is that like okay DC
and Marvel they have superhero books and they
have other books that are non superhero IDW is
that company where it is all licensed property
but it's really good license for like there's
only been a few from IDW that I've read that
I have not enjoyed and you know Again, they are
playing on us from the 80s You know what we grew
up with like I you know what like I've already
listed those I guarantee I know people are skeptical
about the new upcoming gem of the holograms comic
as far as the art style But I'm pretty much say
that that's probably gonna be a hit for IDW once
it launches just because of the fan base But
hey, and you're right Dan, image is, when it
comes to create our own content, image is king
when it comes to that. So, that concludes the
comics. We move into film. Oh boy. This is where
it gets a bit dicey. You're going to see a lot
of recurring themes. Just looking at the nominees,
I think you can kind of put two and two together
to see who won some of these awards. I can honestly
say it's not my fault. All right. Starting it
out, we have best performance. There's going
to be heads rolling here, I think. Andy Serkis
and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Chris Evans
and Winter Soldier. Chris Pratt in Guardians
of the Galaxy, Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler,
and Michael Keaton in Birdman. I like the fact
that we nominated Jake Gyllenhaal, but the Oscars
did not. So our fans are smarter than the Oscars.
Well, now you hear what they're doing now. Now
they're backpedaling on stuff that they voted
on six years ago. Oh, we should have we should
have given the nominee or the win to them. That's
that's just, you know, you'll do that. That's
that's what they do. They don't know. Well, it's
expected easy. Like they said money morning quarterback.
It's easy to do that. Yeah. So anyways, the winner
of this category is Chris Pratt. Yeah, he was
good. He was definitely a star making performance
in Guardians. So he's going to ever since then,
he's getting now he's getting cast in like every
movie ever. So Jurassic Park. A few others he
yeah possible Indiana Jones, you know, so his
career is only getting bigger and the funny thing
is Batman will be voicing him in Guardians of
the Galaxy's animated series Will Friedle got
the voice of Star -Lord in the new upcoming Guardians
animated cartoon I could see that that's a good
doesn't surprise me No, it doesn't surprise me.
Will Friedle always gets the lead role of whoever
it is in an animated series. Batman, Lion -O.
That's what I mean. I'm curious. Where did Jake
Gyllenhaal fall on that list? Actually, he was
in the middle at 17. Who was the last one? Chris
Evans. Yeah, I could see that. Really? Come on.
It's probably because it's similar to the same
performance he gave in last two films. He's good
in it, but you know, it's I think that was better
than His performance in some of the other movies
that he's appeared in of Captain America Related
material, but I don't think that it was anything.
I do I do agree with Chris Pratt winning and
Guardians only for the fact that yeah, it was
such a fresh kind of light -hearted tone To the
character and and to the you know, I think it
was the first fun character. We've had since
kind of like the early Tony Stark So it's it
was kind of refreshing again to kind of go back
to that Yeah, so definitely right I would I mean
Jake like it's weird comparing that to Jake Gyllenhaal,
which is such a different performance But that
that was my personal favorite performance of
the year So i'm kind of glad it got as many votes
as it did because I know it's not nearly The
behemoth that guardians of the galaxy was So
moving on to the next one. We have best animated
film which almost could have gone under the other
category, but it works here, too We have Big
Hero 6, How to Train Your Dragon 2, The Tale
of Princess... Cayuga. Cayuga. Thank you. The
Box Trolls and the Lego Movie. I'm hoping Big
Hero 6 won. It's the Lego Movie. It was a good
movie But it didn't win We have Lego movie nice
as the winner at 54 votes Very well, I would
say it is by far not by far. It's actually been
a really great year for animation But I would
say yeah, it is I would vote it as the best I
can make a film of the year I will say it was
almost a damn near blowout in this That's not
surprising The second was Big Hero 6 at 27, which
is half. Just put that into perspective. And
then How to Train Your Dragon was in the middle
at 7. Wow, I'm surprised How to Train Your Dragon
didn't get more. I am surprised that too, considering
it's getting a sequel. So they're doing How to
Train Your Dragon 3? Yes. Supposed to be a coming
-of -age. Well, they set it up for the for that
was the plan when they meet the second one So
I it it definitely deserves it. I mean I would
say compared to them something like Shrek 3 I'm
more excited for a how to train your dragon 3.
Yeah, I have to agree So if dragon 2 got 7 what
did box trolls get 1 or a half point? Yeah Yeah,
I like box trolls, but it's uh, it's definitely
that I would probably put it Last in that list.
I haven't seen Princess Kaga yet, but I've heard
amazing things about it. Yeah, you got one. Yeah
Surprising so moving on to the next category.
We had best comic book film Which Captain America
the Winter Soldier Guardians of the Galaxy Snowpiercer
the amazing spider -man 2 and x -men days of
future past I did not know that snow piercer
was a comic Space up a French graphic novel ah
that explains a lot the movie was good But it's
say it's either gonna well, it's probably gonna
be guardians, but I kind of hope it's x -men
You would be right in the first guess and wrong
Yeah, your hopes have been smashed The Guardians
destroyed it at 42, followed by Cap, too, at
30. X -Men Days of Future Past at 13, Snowpiercer
at 4, and Amazing Spider -Man at 3. I can't believe
X -Men only got 13. That's crazy. It's a strong
year for comic book movies. I like Guardians,
but I think Cap is a more complete movie than
Guardians. Voted for cap, but yeah, I can understand
the love of Guardians. It's got a lot going for
it Yeah, I voted cap too for best comic book
film just because it was just I thought it was
better in that sense like not saying I didn't
like Guardians because I did but it's I just
I liked the overall package better Mm -hmm. I
agree. I think it it has I think Guardians biggest
element is a narrative where captain I I wouldn't
say it has no weak spots, but it's more of a,
you know, it has great action, great character
development. It pushes the universe forward a
little bit ways, but I mean, Guardians, it definitely
has that fresh take and it has a great sense
of humor and it's art, it's production design
and art design are phenomenal. So definitely
I can understand why it's such a popular movie.
So the winner here is... Obviously Guardians
of the Galaxy. So alrighty. So what do we got
next? Best overall film which has Birdman, Guardians
of the Galaxy, Captain America 2, Interstellar,
and Snowpiercer. I think we can, you know, read
the tea leaves and figure out which one this
is gonna be. Yeah. Guardians hands down. Again,
you are correct. At 43 votes, Guardians won this
category. Followed by Cap2 at 23, Birdman at
14, Interstellar at 8, and Snowpiercer at 4.
Whoa, wait a minute here. I know now Optimus
Solo is going to be ravaging us in the comments
or doing his rant in the comments about Birdman
getting more votes than Snowpiercer. That doesn't
surprise me, but I'm more surprised that it got
more votes than Interstellar because I know like
Nolan has this I I know understand why it wasn't
as unanimously accepted as most Nolan movies
are but I'm I'm surprised it out did that one,
but hey It's probably gonna be winning the Academy
Award on Sunday. So No surprise. Yeah. All right.
What do we got up next? We got next is best special
effects Again we have some returning entries
Captain America 2 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,
Guardians of the Galaxy, Interstellar, and X
-Men Days of Future Past. I will say some of
these are kind of neck and neck. This one, I
think there's room for an upset because I do
think, I think Dawn should win by far, but maybe
I could see Guardians pulling it out because
it's, you know, keep it going. Yeah, I'd agree
with that, but I'd also throw x -men in there
Maybe just for the time in a bottle sequence
with Quicksilver. That's true. It's good point.
That was a good part of the movie so We get down
to the nitty -gritty here it is again Guardians
of the Galaxy Yeah I do like its look I do love
its bright colors and it's like use of like nebula
to kind of design its world. So but I think if
you look at Achievement wise when it comes to
special effects, there's a dawn of the planet
apes is a More impressive achievement. I mean
when your entire When half or not 80 % of your
cast is CGI creations and you can make it work
I think that's a little bit more more impressive
to me Well Yeah, it was kind of surprising anyway.
But yeah, it was followed closely by Interstellar
at 33. It was so close. I was actually rooting
for something to beat Guardians. Interstellar
beat Planet of the Apes? There's something wrong
with that. Planet of the Apes was at 19. Cap
2 was at 11. X -Men was at 8 the thing is I think
cap 2 should have been the bottom one here because
there's not as much special effects and that
is there is everything else that we've shown
Right. Yeah, I agree. I mean interstellar its
special effects are I mean that's probably one
of the best thing and that's going for it is
it's it's it's a special effects are really good
too, so I like so I'm not too surprised but it
yeah, that's kind of kind of crazy that beat
the on maybe That's interesting at least Matthew
McConaughey wasn't driving for the Lincoln in
the movie No, he was driving. He's driving a
pickup. Yep. It wasn't a Lincoln I am referencing
the bad Jim Carrey parody of and he was not squishing
boogers So yes and deciding whether he was gonna
eat him I did like the celebrity Jeopardy clip
on SNL where he showed up on on there and did
his own voiceover and everything That was a good
time. That was great so Moving on, we have Best
Drama. This is the first time that we don't see
Guardians or Captues show up. No, they couldn't
fit in this category. Because they're not dramas,
technically. I don't know. But anyways, we have
Birdman, Boyhood, Foxcatcher, Nightcrawler and
Whiplash. All films except for one I have not
seen. They're all good. Like them all Boyhood
is probably my favorite out of all of them and
then not fault very closely that well nightcrawlers
really good too and Whiplash is a good time.
I yeah, they're all pretty strong I would probably
rank Fox catcher as the weakest of the bunch,
but I'm curious to hear who won Birdman yeah,
it's not surprising. It's not 37 You know, it's
if you think about the geek cast radio crowd
It makes sense why birdman would win I think
maybe even people who didn't see it Just thought
it was a comic book movie and just brought it
out of the habit Have you seen birdman? That's
the other one i've watched I didn't particularly
care for it, but I gave it a shot I would assume
you and Mike would not like Birdman. I have not
seen any of these films in this category, hence
why I haven't said anything. I tried watching
it with my wife. She's like, this isn't very
good. It's definitely an acquired taste. Anyhow,
any other comments before we move on? No. What
was second? Nightcrawler. Or no, not Nightcrawler.
Whiplash, sorry. Oh, really? That's surprising.
That was at 19. Yeah. I think it helps the fact
that Birdman was out a little bit. Well, I think
that just came out on DVD. Very cool. So, best
comedy? It's between 22 Jump Street, Horrible
Bosses 2, The Neighbors, The Grand Budapest Hotel,
and The Trip to Italy. Probably 22 Jump Street
or Neighbors Yeah Well, your first guess was
correct 22 Jump Street took it away at 38 votes
The lowest was horrible bosses too Really? Which
I was quite surprised about What was was Neighbors
second? Neighbors was actually 10 Grand Budapest
Hotel was 15 and trip to italy was also 10. So
it was kind of tied for the middle I'm surprised
trip to italy got that many votes. That's kind
of crazy to me. But uh, yeah, I like 22 jump
street. It's definitely uh that That franchise
is a lot better than it should be. Uh, I thought
those movies should be awful, but chris lord
and whatnot. They've done a good job of kind
of making Interesting satire about uh action
comedy. It's good to see us getting good action
comedies again I'm glad that Grand Budapest Hotel
did as well as it did because that that to me
was the funniest movie of last year, but But
yeah, I mean it was it was pretty interesting.
Like I said seeing what what won Through through
that anyway I personally liked horrible bosses
too, but I also like 22 jump Street because it
keeps poking fun at itself Not taking itself
seriously, but it gets funnier because it's not
trying hard To do what it's trying to do. Yeah,
that was my like I like the first one better
because I thought it's a little bit more interesting
things to say especially regarding like the youth
culture of today The jokes were so much better
in the second one. I Don't know in some areas
the issue I had I felt it was a little bit Like
you mentioned with like poking fun at being a
sequel. I thought those jokes were a little bit
too on the nose and too repetitive where I think
the There's more variety last time. I don't disagree
that there's sharp jokes in it. I do think it's
funny, but uh I haven't seen horrible bosses
too though. So I can't really comment on that
one. I didn't really like the first horrible
bosses though. I thought it was Trying to go
for dark humor, but didn't have any edge to it.
So this one definitely had more of that in there
All right, that's good to hear but uh, I apparently
don't have a funny bone in my body because I
don't think i've seen any of these Wow, you're
just sad strange little man. Yeah, I don't think
he'd like any of them honestly But maybe that's
bosses too. I don't know. Yeah, he might best
sci -fi movie We see the return of two or three
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Godzilla Guardians
of the Galaxy interstellar and under the skin
Kevin's favorite movie I can tell you right now.
I didn't win. I There'd be no way in hell. It
would win now with the gatecaps ready across
it is tied with one that it's surprising it got
so low votes, but It's guardians that won hands
down Yeah Yeah 52 votes for Guardians of the
Galaxy followed closely by interstellar at 21
Which is half or under half and then you've done
at the Planet of the Apes at 11 Godzilla's tied
at 3 with undead skin Yeah, I could see that
I could understand why that would happen Already
what's last the action adventure? Yes This one
is the first time Guardians doesn't show up at
the same time Captain America shows up Which
is actually nice. That's the only reason Captain
America is going to win. So wait a second here.
You just told us Cap is going to win without
even giving us the nominees. I did that on purpose.
Because the others are so low in this one, it's
almost a blowout. Expendables 3 has four votes.
John Wick has 14. The Hunger Games has 10, and
The Raid 2 has 7. Captain America has 60. That's
a beat down. Not too surprising. The Raid 2,
if you don't like martial arts films or subtitles,
you're not going to like that. John Wick, I think,
it was... Maybe went under the radar for a little
bit Hunger Games, I'm surprised it did not do
better. Maybe people will don't consider it an
action movie though. Maybe that's why and Especially
the last one had very little action and then
I don't forget the other one that was nominated
But yeah, I'm glad Captain America won something
because I didn't think it deserves at least one
award Yeah, I I was kind of sad I didn't win
more than one but I'm glad at least it was represented
somewhere So I am definitely glad to see that
that happened But yeah, we're done with the film
and we're moving into the GCR in part So the
the the content that has to do with original
stuff So, yes, the core podcasts are as follows.
Altered Geek, Geekcast Radio, Talking in Circles,
The Pull Bag, and Weekend at the Movies. I would
assume Altered Geek or Weekend at the Movies.
I don't even know if Weekend at the Movies should
even be eligible considering... Sorry, Kevin.
I didn't mean to do that. Liar. So anyways, so
that I'm not throwing any more buses at people
Geekcast radio one Interesting with 35 votes
That's that's pretty interesting because we don't
get a lot of We don't get a lot of feedback for
you. Yes radio. Honestly, it's because it's so
flawless. It doesn't need it I'm joking. That's
probably true, actually, but, you know. All right.
Yeah, that was so funny. Followed closely by
Talking in Circles at 19, Altered Geek at 17,
The Pullback at 11, and Weekend at the Movies
at 9. So, yeah, I was kind of surprised at how
that came down. I could see people just voting
Geek Hearts Radio, though, thinking it's just
a, like, A collection of all of them like I'll
just feel for getting cash radio because that's
the entire network. So that could be I Don't
know but uh review good I guess it makes sense
since it's at least one that's like everyone's
been on and the network for the most part. So
Yeah, that makes sense. And we've had the awards
or not the awards. We haven't had the awards
We've had some of the specials. We've had the
the highlights of all the different syndicated
partners and then we've had the the top 100s
on there, so I can see that. Plus the interviews
like Dynamic Music Partners and Mad Mel Madigan
and Stan Bush and Johnson and Virginia. Yeah,
but some of those fall under other categories,
too. So that's right. Well, I'm looking at them
in the GCR category. Either way, just before
you move on, I just want to say GCR for 2014
began the year with episode 58 2014 geek films.
And obviously, it ended the year with the Year
in Review Show for 2014. So we've had a lot of
interesting content on GCR. I'm actually surprised
that Talking in Circles didn't win because Talking
in Circles, that's the show that gets all the
comments. Well, the thing is, is Talking in Circles,
too, also gets the highest views on the website.
So why did you vote for us then? I voted for
me, so... I'm biased. I voted for myself. Which
one of you? Because there's like three of you
on the podcast, right? I mean, Altered Geek or
Geek Cast Radio? I voted for Altered Geek. I
was very biased. I voted for the pullback and
that didn't get any votes, so... It's still beat
me out of movies Thank God, I mean I put two
and a half years of content into it. I'm sorry
Kevin Maybe this maybe this will just motivate
Kevin for next year's awards Show like I mean
I can't say they are recording one episode as
we're doing this so you should see right So don't
throw them under the bus too hard Only the first
bus So review shows is next. And we have two
retired shows in this category as well, but they
were active. All Things Transformers from the
Command Center, Future Imperfect, Pixels in the
Animation, and Powers of Grayskull. I'd have
to say ATTF. It's the longest -running show for
the network. Although it does have the most subscriptions
out of all of those, it did not win. Sorry. It's
fine. I'll survive. So, any guesses on the winner?
I have no idea. Okay. It was Powers of Grayskull
at 24. All right, all 24 of you people that voted
go over to iTunes and leave us iTunes reviews
We've been like that this show is so fun to do
but at this point in the podcast Lifespan since
we've kind of changed the format around as far
as it's originally That show was going that series
was going to have four individual podcasts because
we're in total We're reviewing all four Masters
of the universe cartoons Filmation he managed
Shira the new adventures and the two thousand
two series of masters universe uh... now that
we're not doing that it's just going to be one
feed one entire show hundred twenty five episodes
long uh... this isn't an advertisement no it
isn't and just saying that since the format has
changed i am so dying to get to the sheer cartoons
as i'm so sick of watching Filmation He -Man
at this point. It feels like I've been reviewing
Filmation He -Man for three years. Oh boy. But
yay, Powers of Grayskull won! And it was followed
second by Alt -Things Transformers at 16, from
the Command Center at 15, Pixels and the Animation
at 15, Future Imperfect at 6. I don't care, I
still got on the board three times. So, moving
on to our syndicated partners. I am on none of
these. Geek Scholars Movie News, Markhu42's Hooniverse,
Punisher Body Count, Star Joe's, and What's On
Joe Mind. I will say last year, Markhu42's Hooniverse
blew away everybody else, but I think they blew
their wad on the nominees section. Not on the
actual voting Yeah, so they got on the ballot
they didn't win oh Wow Defending champions are
defeated ladies and gentlemen Yep, sadly it happened
and the globe goes to what's on Joe mind really
yes Interesting Yep, they won with 30 votes,
followed by Geek Scholars at 16, Starjoes at
15, Markhu at 14, and Punisher at 13. Man, Dan
and Jake gotta step up next year. Well, we've
got in session film now, so I feel sorry for
anybody else. Wow. Yeah. So any other comments
on that? No, I don't I mean interesting mark
who 42 didn't win considering last year So but
yeah, I mean they're all good shows I mean, that's
the good thing if you don't listen to them, I
would definitely about going out and checking
them out Congrats to Gary Mike Justin and Chuck
All right, so moving on we have our newest category
of the non GC RN content Will say that this was
quite an interesting stage because I had no idea
when the blue hell was going on the entire time
Meaning it changed consistently through the entire
voting process I didn't know what was going to
happen what wasn't going to happen who was going
to be blown away What I mean, it was just constant
flux So getting into the first subcategory of
this we have favorite review podcast such video
podcast and we have the nominees how did this
get made and session film simplistic reviews
the arkham sessions and the greatest movie ever
podcast i'm gonna say in session one but i'm
hoping the arkham sessions did what are your
thoughts dan Well, I have not listened to Arkham
or the greatest movie one, but I I can't say
which one I want the one because I feel like
that'd be like picking your favorite kid because
I'm a big fan of both simplistic and in -session
film So if either of those when would be happy
and I do love how does this get made? That's
one of my favorite podcasts, which is especially
their live episodes We talked a lot about it
on talking circles, but it's a good it's a good
time. Just cut them in thirds So We have this
it's pretty close in this one. We have in session
film winning at 25 Nice well deserved JD Durant
is like one of the hardest men working in podcasting
today. So he definitely deserves the award Followed
second by How did this get made I could see that
that's good Third the Arkham Sessions fourth
simplistic reviews and fifth the greatest movie
ever podcast I Was I was kind of pulling a little
bit for simplistic considering the awesome video
they did so I know they may have not have won
this category But I think they win something.
I don't know. Oh the creativity alone was just
was just Stunning I don't even know like how
It was just impressive what they did. Yeah So
I mean it's a good podcast too. So it's if you
like you cast radio stuff You will definitely
like simplistic review stuff because they kind
of cover similar content So I got that kind of
vibe when I listen to their watch their video
But I have not actually had a chance to really
catch up on any podcast And I would say in session
film is very like if you're into like film talk
It's one of the one of the better film podcasts
out there. So I can't speak to the other ones.
I have not seen them. But yeah, I definitely
think it in session film deserves it and Congrats
to them and you know, all the people that were
nominated. I will say about the Arkham Sessions.
It's Brian Ward from Shout Factory and dr. Andrea
Letamendi. She is a Psychologist psychotherapist.
I don't know her exact title. They basically
go through one episode of Batman the Animated
Series per podcast and they look at it psychologically
and she approaches it from a clinical standpoint.
So basically she and Brian do everything Steve
and I didn't do on Legends of the Dark Knight
and they approach it more of like, because Brian
will ask her for certain episodes or certain
villains, okay, if this part, like if Two -Face
had these, you know, these... Dissociative identity
disorders if someone in real life, you know one
of your patients, how would you treat that? So
it is a very good fun interesting show and I
will say Arkham They are probably the most unique
Batman the animated series review show I've ever
heard But you know grats to end session Yeah
Yep, I I definitely agree So uh... moving on
to the next category we have favorite podcast
slash video podcast and the nominees earth two
dash net or at earth dash two dot net the show
i know mike was part of the reason uh... married
to the games nerdist serial and wtf with mark
marion I stopped listening to Nerdist a year
and a half ago. I listen to Nerdist here and
there, depending on who's on. I tend to listen
mostly to the Hostful episodes, but the ETF with
Mark Maron is awesome. If you like comedy, that
is. a great show to listen to in especially they
they did like this link ranking of the best podcast
episodes ever and That his episode with Louis
CK was ranked number one Deservingly so and they
just re -aired it not too long ago. And it's
if you at all like stand -up comedy It's a must
listen and I know cereal was like the biggest
podcast ever this year so much so that there
was an SNL parody So i'm curious to see who won
that because I know that's a variety of different
fan bases compared to that of keycast radio Uh,
well I will say that nerdist won Yeah, I could
definitely see that at 40 What was second place?
Uh wtf at 19 Yeah, nervous has I mean, it's got
its fandom. It's got a huge following and Chris
Hardwick is like everywhere on TV He's got like
18 television shows. I know he's got the the
at midnight. He's got the walking dead. You're
talking dead. I mean But I I'm not a I'm not
a huge nerdist fan I I more so have listened
to a couple of the podcasts in the past based
on the voice actor or the actor that's been on
and then I've I Mostly just watch nerdist news
and that's it I don't really watch anything from
Nerdist, other Nerdist news and maybe some of
their original shorts that come out, but I don't
really pay any attention to them other than that.
I don't know. Same here. I don't know. I like
Nerdist a lot. I think it's that podcast is responsible
for a great deal for increasing the popularity
of podcasts. So and I think it, you know, the
guests that he gets and his interview style is
quite good. I guess I tend to enjoy it mostly
when the Jonah Ray Matt Matt Myra and him are
together and doesn't happen as much anymore So
I do kind of miss that but uh, yeah, I used to
listen to every episode But now it's hard to
keep up with it. So I tend to Depending on the
guest so I tend to stick away, you know If I
knew the person I'm interested in it like he
had a pretty good episode recently with Jeff
Bridges Because he's always an interesting guy
to hear talk I'll say about Nerdist, you know,
congratulations, but at the same time, one of
the reasons why I stopped listening, I know I'm
someone that repeats stories, but I try not to
repeat them every single podcast episode I do.
And that was the thing I noticed with Chris Hardwick
is it doesn't matter what guest he has on, almost
every single episode I listened to a year and
a half ago, he basically told at least one of
the same stories he told in the previous podcast
episode, and I just couldn't listen to it anymore.
I'm interested because I don't really notice
that and I've listened to and I started listening
to it. Well, it's It's mainly well, I started
listening to it. I don't know what episode number
it was, but it was um The Rob Paulson and Maurice
LaMarche interview we did. Yeah Like I said,
it was about a year and a half ago or so or something
like that I forget and it's basically when he's
talking to people about comedy His opinion is
his opinion. That's all well fine and good But
when you say the same thing about comedy and
you add nothing new to the conversation every
single episode Yeah, i'm gone So I don't know.
I don't notice that I would say like you would
we would be as guilty of that as anyone Not every
single episode. Yes, we I am very I'll I admit
that Mike is very guilty Shut the hell up. I
did it in this episode No, I don't think so.
I'm pretty sure you did Yeah, well with powers
of grayskull. Yeah, but I do that all the time
with all the shows I do but that's like show
specific but like All right, what's the next
category we're throwing you around in the bus
Mike Nobody can see the middle finger. I'm giving
both of them. It's a magic All we hear is a sad
strange little man You don't have our pity though.
Favorite video podcast network? In the nominees,
earth -2 .net, again Mike, Earwolf, I don't know
if they spelled it wrong. Earwolf. Yeah, okay.
A lot of people spelled it wrong, I guess. Earwolf.
Yeah, that's where Squire Brothers and... Comedy
bang bang. I think you're on there and a few
others podcast one screen junkies and Nerdist
Probably gonna say nerds again, huh? It's gonna
come down to screen junkies and Nerdist. I Was
actually hoping one would win where one didn't
and so on but anyways The winner is Nerdist at
33 They do go ahead. Oh you go ahead They do
have a pretty strong network of different shows
like indoor kids and uh make uh making getting
weird with uh Oh, I forget the name of the dude,
but uh, yeah, they have a pretty strong network
overall chewing It's pretty funny. So I could
see why there's a variety of like shows that
they have I kind of some of their shows I watch
are like the and science or whatever. Uh See,
I don't I don't really watch any online content
I don't I find YouTube shows used to be often
pretty awful so well I typically usually watch
them when I'm editing or I'm doing something
on my computer, but One I'm at home because I
have two monitors or I'll watch them in one screen
while I'm playing a game in the other It's more
so background noise, and I kind of pay attention
to some of it, but um I also watch a lot of it
when I'm at work and I have a small window open
with that While I'm maybe filing paperwork and
doing stuff. So it's again background noise,
but I kind of pay attention to it So I kind of
like some of their video stuff it just depends
I'm more of a screen junkies fan. What is screen
junkies? They do the honest trailers Oh, yeah
Which is the number one reason why I started
following them and then they I watch all they're
like They have some geek fights on Sundays, which
is like a podcast But it's a video version and
it is pretty freakin hilarious the guests that
they get out and they argue for an hour It's
it's actually and they come up with really good
reasons and in their guys on there They're like
me like Mike like you like Kevin. I mean, it's
so sitting there watching this I'm imagining
us arguing about the same crap and coming out
with the same outcome and and they have like
a guy that that shares it and and basically Has
to weigh the options of the the reasonings that
people gave On movies like one of them they did
recently had a They were arguing one guy was
arguing why the Hobbit was crap Yeah, well We're
comparing it to so they're comparing it to a
different film that came out around the same
time or something and they were saying Because
this guy was just saying it sucked But he really
wasn't giving any actual explanation why it sucked.
He just was kind of reiterating it that it sucked
In as many different terms as he could without
actually describing why that's so most online
criticism So the other people were just ripping
him apart on it like, you know So exactly why
is this movie bad? So it was it was it was fun
to watch anyway A lot of their stuff's kind of
like that That's probably why I enjoy them so
much. It's like a long wars episode But yeah,
so I enjoy them they got 17 votes your wolf got
18 Podcast one got 12 and earth -2 got five Moving
on to our I believe it's second to the last category
we have favorite YouTube channel and Then there
were four nominees for this one and for the next
one I have to say there were not five Yeah, it
was hard narrowing it down, I think. So anyways,
the nominees were The Warp Zone, Geeks Not Nerds,
Josh Lewis Reviews, and Optibotomus. And your
thoughts? Yeah, I have no idea. I don't know
what any of them are. Don't know and I told Paul
about this. I don't even know if he actually
promoted it, so I'm not even sure He tends not
to pay attention to most stuff that he's mentioned
in But I don't know who won um I'm Happy about
the winner of this one the warp zone At 30 votes
and these guys do if you're unfamiliar with them
they do original videos a lot of the time they
do acapella of TV show theme songs like you know
Darkwing Duck or Transformers and they have the
six of these guys and in the wind like these
little separate windows kind of like Brady Bunch
style doing like they're part of the acapella
thing doing the musical instruments and then
they also do various skits they do like pop culture
song parodies but using like video games or Game
of Thrones or The Hobbit or just whatever as
like the they completely redo the video and the
song so it's related to whatever that topic is
and I honestly think it's pretty good and so
much so that when I play games I have their playlist
on loop on the other screen For the music part
and in their skits are actually really good,
you know They did the whole Star Wars lightsaber
explanation and everything on there recently
and among other things But yeah, there's just
ton of good stuff over there to watch And then
Optibotamus was number two at 28 Cool Which those
are the only two that I know about this entire
round section right here Geeks not nerds got
18 and Josh Lewis reviews got four. I've never
heard of him I have no idea. I have yeah Octobonimus
I know but that's because he's had previous affiliation
with us. Yeah, I don't I'm off Octobonimus is
pretty much a toy reviewer. He's he's one of
the iconic toy reviews on YouTube. He's in the
same league as like Pixel Dan and Sean Long and
that kind of thing. Speaking French to me. Okay,
but I'm telling the audience, I'm telling the
listeners, you know, in case any of them don't
know. But anyway, next category. The final category,
which I was surprised by the winnings in this
one. Favorite YouTube series. We have epic rap
battles of history Honest trailers dirtest bowling
Okay. Now, wait a minute here. Hold on. It's
Chris Hardwick's all -star celebrity bowling
is what it's actually called Yeah, well the the
fan is bowling. Okay. Well, I'm just saying what
the actual title of I'm just calling it by whatever
they put in the camera People are like what the
hell is this there were there are a few that
were like Chris Hardwick's and there was a few
that were Nerdist It was just easier to put in
artists. I think people can understand He owns
it and then there's toy world order Gonna assume
it's nervous maybe I don't know Probably so it
was almost a TV show until they fell through
That fell through really? When did they say that?
I don't know, a couple months ago. Oh, because
the last news article I found on Google was like
from last year when they said it was coming.
AMC decided to move away from like reality TV
shows and focus more on good shows. Good. Less
crap, more good stuff. That's actually written.
Toy World Order 1. Wow. I was quite upset. Honest
trailers oh yeah, because I'm sorry I I don't
have any ill will against toy world order, but
I think the honest trailers do the geek movie
universe a fan service that is well deserved
Because they beat the shit out of movies that
are actually bad Yes, yeah mighty with Honest
trailers actually I don't mind them nearly as
much as like everything that's wrong with new
ones that are I think are just awful um, I you
know, I think our trailers are at least funny,
but I feel like it's systemic of the each the
lack of ability to actually critique stuff becomes
a geek culture and it's nitpicking and not an
actual discussion so I tend to not like Those
type of things because it's it's generic criticism
Like in you building yourself up by tearing so
much someone else is down So I tend not to like
Honest trailers or everything you're wrong with
I think honest trailers at least it's funny and
it won't recognize when They too can are having
difficulty even making fun of something like
with our guardian of the galaxy Honest trailer,
which was pretty good. But I don't know I I just
I take I like real movie criticism and I feel
like stuff like that just gets promotes more
so the generic Conversations that tend to happen
over nitpicks and things that aren't that important.
Well, I will say that the light like they're
screen junkies Geek fights or whatever they they
actually discuss what's wrong with it and argue
it back and forth. Whereas the honest trailers
is It's not it's not it's not a design to be
movie criticism. It's designed to be more Emetic
and whatnot, which is fine. My issue more so
is the way that people then use it as like like
as Ammunition for real or evidence that a movie
isn't good. It's like just watch the honest trailer
You'll see how bad the movie is, which I don't
think is true. I I use them as ammunition as
well I will say that because I'm not gonna say
I don't But The way I see it is is all the movies
that actually deserve the criticism Are the ones
they made the trailer for? Yeah, um, for instance
dumb and dumber two They just did that Yeah,
I mean we agree with it and then like all the
transformers films Um, yeah, I mean, I don't
i'm not saying I think they're they're their
issues are wrong Per se and yeah, you can make
fun of them. My number two is not it's not that
hard. Uh, so I just like I don't disagree that
the stuff they say is incorrect. I just think
it it's usually paper -thin arguments It's just
like this the obvious things I like if I'm gonna
have a discussion about a movie I'd rather listen
to something like film spotting or like in session
film and I think it's a good piece of entertainment
but I don't think people should look at it as
a piece of evidence of the quality of a movie
even if it is picking on something like Twilight
or something like that because it's I mean they
kind of I'm not saying they're bad. I just saying
that I think people misuse them and tend to I
Don't know I wouldn't more so what you're saying
is don't use it as your sole Informative place
for the film if you're going there for humor.
That's yeah If you're going if you're going to
have a good laugh or have fun or you know, make
fun of a movie That's fine. I think that's good.
Great. You know, they've they're certainly really
funny people and their videos are well put together
But my issue is more so not with them, but people
who try to say, like, hey, I want to tell you
a movie's bad, and I'm going to tell you that
by showing you the honest trailer, which happens
way too much. Like, I use them for the fact that
I usually have the same nitpicks about the films,
but it depends on the film. Like, some of them
I don't care. Yeah, I mean. It's a laugh. But
like the Star Trek films, I use those as ammunition.
Like, for a movie like that. Those are the only
two that I actually use as ammunition. Yeah,
like a movie like Dumb and Dumber too. You're
not gonna have a really just get this There's
not much to talk about besides in the fix. Well,
yeah, so But yeah, I mean, I definitely could
I wouldn't be upset if they won but What what
is Toy World Order? Toy World Order comes from
the minds of Jason DeVall and Dave Draper. They
did have two other members when they first started.
It came out of Jason and Dave leaving popculturenetwork
.com and it's basically them talking about toys
and doing video reviews of toys and doing little
skits and stuff like that. It's really funny.
The funniest part about it is Jason Duvall has
this puppet that Pixel Dan had given him... Jason
Duvall and Pixel Dan earlier are childhood friends.
So they grew up together and Dan had given him,
I think, this gray muppet -looking puppet years
and years and years ago. So one point when they
were doing a show together a few years ago called
That New Toy Smell... Jason brought the puppet
in and that's how that kind of started and it
kind of progressed now Dave Draper operates and
does the voice of the puppet and the puppet interacts
with Jason it's easily the best non Hollywood
special effects show because pretty much you
see the puppet and you see Jason you never see
where Dave is I mean, obviously you can look
at the video and figure out where he is, but
you never actually see Dave's hand or anything
like that. And it's really, really cool and funny.
I'll have to send you a couple of links specifically
with the puppet videos, Dan, so you can check
it out. But they do toy reviews. They do a weekly
podcast called Dave and Deval's Toys and Collectibles.
And they just, you know, talk about toys and
the art of toys and toy collecting and going
to auctions and that kind of stuff. It's really
funny, funny and amazing stuff. It really is.
And they've built up a huge fan base. Cool. So,
yeah. Yeah. Is that it? Yeah, actually. As surprising
as that is, that's it. So what did you guys think
overall? Well, I think it definitely, you saw
a lot of trends. You can definitely tell what
people are interested in when it comes to gas
radio, a lot of Game of Thrones and Guardians
of the Galaxy, it seems, and Arrow. You think?
A little bit. Yeah, I mean, it was, I think I
always hope for more diversity when it comes
to this type of stuff, but you can kind of see
why and, you know. We were just going based upon
what the fan said. So it's kind of cool knowing
that it was all them and we were just the we
were just the messengers here Yep, we were we
were the ones that spit out the info and kind
of commented But I am definitely looking forward
to seeing the comments on the website. Oh Yeah,
I am definitely looking forward to seeing that
and seeing what kind of reactions there are and
and seeing What people think what people think
should have won what they think shouldn't have
won what they think should have shown up it's
just Just in general just looking forward to
seeing the comments because I'd like to have
an actual discussion on there definitely Steve
let me ask you. Do you have the overall number
of votes total? for everything um Because I'm
curious how many total people we got to actually
vote all together No, I don't. Nope, I don't
have the total. Dang. All right. So yeah, that's
the second annual GCN Awards. We're obviously
going to have the third annual one next year.
As Steve said, it's going to be interesting to
see what people say in the comments on this episode
post. Coming up on GCR, I'm not sure what we're
gonna do. I have a few ideas. Optimus Solo has
a few ideas. We're gonna mix them in. I will
say right now, coming up this summer, episode
90 to 96 will be the GCRN Top 100 Favorite Video
Games Countdown. So that's coming up this summer.
Which means we the back end of that need to get
going But anyway, that's what's coming up this
summer for GCR in between that we I'm thinking
of doing a couple of wrestling episodes here
and there I'm thinking of doing a couple of Probably
different stuff well, yeah, but I'm thinking
Wrestling we may do us another separate sports
section. We may do We might do a couple of top
tens here and there. I'm not sure just yet, but
all that's coming up on ye cast radio Dan where
can the people interact with you online? Oh,
well, I'm at on Twitter at movie revolt and you
know We have some stuff coming up with talking
in circles and I would say that there is I know
Kevin and I and Him and his crew as well have
a lot coming out for weekend at the movies this
year a lot of different things planned list wise
and There's a lot of things already in the works
that I've already come out with the professional
film League of things I can't think of top of
my head PCFL or whatever. But yeah, there's a
lot coming out there should be a lot more content
for weekend at the movies and You can catch talking
in circles every Tuesday on Geocast radio You
can find me usually by searching scp -21, but
you can contact me mostly on Twitter at scp -21
And then, of course, Altered Geek Unlimited.
I do have some ideas of things that are going
to come to fruition, hopefully, in the near future.
Not only for the show, but I'm hoping to actually
get back to my video version and actually do
something with it. You can find me at TFG1Mike
on Twitter, you can follow at GeekCastRadio for
all of the network updates, and of course go
to GeekCastRadio .com to comment on this and
every other episode post. You can call the voicemail
line 502 -526 -5821. Be sure to leave your name
and there's a five minute time limit on that.
Until next time, I guess, unleash the geek in
you and we will see you later. What are you doing?
I'm gonna take a shower. No way, I was here first.
Look, you always use up all the hot water, so
I'm just gonna pop in and take a real quick one,
okay? One sec, I'm gonna grab a Red Bull. Ooh,
get me one! There's only one left. Settlement
in Smash! We've been trailing! The browser! Damn.
Alright, who wants the Jenkins account? There's
a big commission in it for you if you close.
Sorry I'm so late. This Jenkins account is brutal.
How's your... Settle it in... Smash? Give me

.com, where you can comment on all of our different
podcasts. Second, you can read our show and leave
us feedback and iTunes. Third, follow us on Twitter
