GeekCast Radio
Interview with Nate Crocker and Matt Fridley on Podcasting

About this Episode
Hi, this is Dan Gilbazan and you're listening
to the Geekcast Radio Network. You're listening
to the Geekcast Radio Network. This is Dave.
He really enjoys going to the movies. He's always
considerate to his fellow moviegoers. This fellow
is disturbing everyone around him. Oh look, Dave
is shutting off his phone. Now is not the time
for talking or texting. Oh well, now look at
that. There's a true movie washing friend. Let's
all be more like Dave. Hello and welcome to Geekcast
Radio. This is episode 77. I am one of your hosts
TF2 and Mike and a little late. We're into the
new year and we're kind of finishing up on the
whole syndicated spotlight. Even though these
guys aren't syndicated, they're more so in the
core of the network. I am talking with the...
No, I want to get this right. So just give me
a minute here. Talking to the former co -hosts
of MWire Weekly, the current co -hosts of Weekend
at the Movies, we dropped Optimus Solo off at
a mac and cheese factory, so he's no longer with
us at this point in this episode of the podcast.
I have with me Mr. Nate Crocker. Hello, sir.
Hello. And Fridley Sin. Matt Fridley. Hello.
Hey, hey. i don't want to get on some of that
mac and cheese factory if you let me know where
that's at so basically what this is folks is
exactly what we were doing in episode sixty eight
through seventy three when myself and potentially
steve megatron at times came on and talked with
our syndicated staff we're going to talk to matt
and nate and kanna Let you the network and listeners
our fans hear from them a little bit more considering
Weekend at the movies hasn't had an episode and
I Don't know month and a half or so. So But that
that obviously couldn't be helped, you know Look,
you know when I've always said this when life
gets in the way podcasting should be the last
thing you should think about Yeah, I've always
said that. So what, other than Kevin twisting
your own arms, what made you want to become podcasters
or do the podcast with him? Well, Nate got asked,
right? Kevin was like, yeah. Because I think
Dan was stepping down and he was like, hey, Nate
and Kevin lived with each other at the time.
And so Kevin was like, hey, Nate, you want to
join me on this podcast? And it's funny, because
Nate and I had just started hanging out again.
Nate and I have been best friends for forever.
But we've lived in different cities for a lot
of the last three, four years. So he had moved
back. We were just getting back in the swing
of things, meeting up weekly and whatever. And
I just happened to hear them talking about it.
Like, hey, maybe we could talk about that Superman
movie. We just watched that Superman movie. I
was like, I just watched that Superman movie,
too. And I was like a little kid, like, oh. I
wanna do that too. That sounds like a lot of
fun. I don't know, I first started listening
to podcasts, I don't know, four or five years
ago, with Kevin Pollock. He does a lot of really
weird stuff. Sometimes he'll do one or two episodes,
then leave it for six months, then come back
to it. But I really like just talking, walking.
Talking, walking. Where he just interviews a
celebrity pretending to be Christopher Walken.
And that's how I got into podcasts. And I don't
know, I never really considered it for years,
even ever doing it, because doing anything on
the internet always seems like you got all these
hurdles to jump. And so the idea of Kevin being
like, hey, I don't have a co -host. We need somebody
to join in. It really was like, hey, that's all
the hurdles. All I got to do is show up. It's
usually when I tell anybody, like if I want someone
to co -host with me, I'll say, look, I'll do
all the work. All you gotta do is show up and
talk. Anyone can do those two things. Uh -huh,
exactly. What about you, Nate? What was your
origins for podcasting or wanting to... Other
than Kevin asking you to do the show, did you
have any inclinations before that to actually
do podcasting or had you listened to podcasts
before? Not really. I listened to... Fantasy
Fiction was before we started. Was that was like
December and then yeah, yeah, so I started listening
to the fantasy fiction podcast that Dom and Josh
do from the continue show and That really got
me into podcasts and then I Had listened to a
few of Kevin's episodes and it always was like
the audio quality is not that great And I've
always been like an audio quality Nazi So when
he was like, hey, do you want to do it? I was
like, yeah. And can I record? And can we do this
with the mics? And can I use all of it? Because
I have the Adobe Suite that I legally am paying
for and everything. Wait, I thought you only
paid for that once. You're still paying for it?
Well, I have the subscription. So it's like $35
a month. Don't know keeps him up to date on everything.
Yeah, everything's updated so it's like I always
like looking for new ways to use it because I
mean obviously I do with the artwork But I there's
so many other programs that I'm always like trying
to figure out how to use them so I was like really
excited to be like I could use this stuff and
and Yeah, so I don't know. I'm always excited
to like work on projects and stuff so That's
pretty much just how I say and I mean we were
watching movies Kevin and I so I was like I watching
all these movies and I've always been a fan of
like reviewing and like critiquing stuff But
I never had an outlet for it, and I found it's
very difficult It's way more difficult than I
assumed because I like I'll watch a movie and
then kind of be like how would you think that
one? I'm like I liked it And yeah, for me, it
was a little hard in the beginning. I've been
at this seven years now. The network's been online
for five and a half, nearly six years. This June
1st will be our six year anniversary. So I've
been doing podcasting for just about seven years
now. What was hard for me was going in and actually
doing the recording, getting the recording done
as far as... I still remember the very first
episode I recorded, because I was doing a one
-man show. I didn't want to say a solo podcast,
because he would think I was talking about him.
With the Transformers Generation 1 podcast I
started back in 2008, I went into it where I
was sitting up straight. My face was two inches
away from the microphone, and I have this stern
look on my face. Think of the deadpan guy on
the radio in Good Morning Vietnam before Robin
Williams takes over like the guy delivering the
news It's like today in Saigon, you know that
kind of thing. Okay So as I'm doing all this
I'm like wow and by the time the network got
into its first year first Six months or so eight
months. I just sat back and just talked and just
relaxed Um, but that, that for me was probably
the hardest part. Um, another difficulty I have
is sometimes concentrating on the material. Okay.
It depends on the top. Well, it depends on the
topic. If it's a topic that is just so God awful
that it's like, it's not even that I can't, it's
so God awful that I can't even tear it to shreds
because it's, it's, it's so bad. There are just
no words. That would be 1985's Mass cartoon,
but... Alright, so, where... Matt, I think I
probably know where you got yours, but Nate,
where did your nickname come from? Adolfo Shabadoo?
Yes! Alright, so, you know, you know, Breakin',
the movie Breakin' and Breakin' 2 Electric Boogaloo?
The actor that is in that movie his turbo turbo
is it turbo turbo and I think that his names
um It is credited as like Adolfo Shabadoo What's
his last name quintess or something? Yeah, it's
a weird so Adolfo Shabadoo like I use that for
a long time for my PSN name for the PlayStation
Network and I don't know when when it came time
to make a Twitter because I didn't make a Twitter
before actually doing the podcast because I don't
I don't do social media really like I have a
Facebook and I haven't been on it in like two
months like ever since I got married I really
haven't even checked it so like Adolfo Quinones
okay anyway so so Yeah, I was like Adolfo Shabadoo,
that's a good name. It was funny actually when
he made the Adolfo Shabadoo I also didn't have
a Twitter. He like he made his Twitter slightly
before me and I was like, well, I'll just be
Ozone is Adolfo Shabadoo. I was like I'll just
be Turbo who is Michael Boogaloo Shrimp Chambers,
but at Boogaloo Shrimp was already taken. I don't
know how Adolfo Shabbity was it and Boogaloo
Shrimp was. So I went with a nickname that they
gave me at work. I've got a dozen nicknames.
Everyone's got different nicknames for me at
work. Like Fridley sent Fridley sent. Yeah, so
you're a white rapper I mean, that's more acceptable
now. I mean back in the 90s. We were an oppressed
people, but now it is well between vanilla ice
and then in 2000s and you know M &M You guys
have a long way Much like Milly Vanilli set back
the hip -hop by you know, he stole his thing
from Queen and set us back a hundred years Mike
likes weird references. I've listened to his
podcast The funny thing is I can follow all of
what he just said and they can't folks You just
asked what's going on. Nate does this interesting
thing, like where he asks what's going on. No,
no, no. He pretends to not follow. He's like,
what's going on around? Like, like really, he's
he's following. I know what's going on. Like
what I'm saying is, why are we talking about
vanilla ice on this podcast? Well, because of
his nickname, Fridley sent, which I assumed you
got from 50 Cent, which is a African -American
rapper. I made the. No, he got it from. From
vanilla ice. Yeah. Oh, gee. Fridly ice, that
sounds more like, um... No, see, if I was gonna
go off of vanilla ice, it'd be ice ice Fridly.
Ice ice Fridly. Or, like, Fridly ice sounds like
a really good drink. A really shitty beer. No,
no, no, or like a low calorie, crystallized or
whatever. Drink Fridly Ice. It's got zero sugars.
You are not sweet at all. Really old, slurpy
flavor. What's that? Sounds like a really, really
old, slurpy flavor. I can get down on that. We
don't have a 7 -Eleven though. I gotta say, Nate,
when I first saw your nickname, I'm like... Yep.
Is he a Nazi lover of Scooby -Doo? What the hell
is going on there? You gotta look into it. It's
the new trend. Yeah. I'm not just gonna be blatant
about it, even though I was really blatant about
it and just using that exact name. He's dropped
a hyphen. Did I drop it? Yeah. You can't have
a hyphen in your Twitter to the handle. All right,
so what was the first movie you guys ever remember
seeing as kids? Whoa. Oh, wow. You said hard
hitting. Yeah, no, that's an interesting one.
Probably Star Wars for me, because it was one
of those things back in the day. They would air
Star Wars every year on USA Network. And I remember
like looking forward to it, like being like,
oh, it's coming up in a month. You know cuz I
didn't know him on the VHS like some of my friends
did and so it was like I remember always looking
forward to seeing that every year They would
you know do one a day like Friday Saturday Sunday
or something? No, you're not talking about it
in theaters. You're just talking about movies
No, just in general Wow the first you can remember
seeing as a kid like probably some Popeye cartoons
from Geez um, I don't know Lion King I remember,
I remember, Lion King. To be a similar question,
the first movie I ever remember seeing and not
just blindly being a child and being like, yes,
I love that movie because it's a movie. Because
I was a really nerdy kid, I guess. Yes. Yes.
So the first movie I ever had that I ever had
the capacity to review was Jurassic Park 2, I
want to say. Sometimes I say 3, sometimes I say
2. It was 2, was the one. Jeff Goldblum. Jeff
Goldblum's in like all of them. Well, no, I mean,
he was like he was a central character and it
was the one where they come come to like New
York, like T -Rex in New York. And then three,
they go back to the island. So it's two. Yeah.
I legitimately remember coming out of that theater.
I was like, I don't know, eight years old or
something. And I was just like, wow, I didn't
know Hollywood could make a bad movie. Because
I didn't have the capacity. I figured, well,
all this money gets spent, it's always good.
And that was the first one I ever, I guess, reviewed.
Do you have a concept when you're eight about
Hollywood spending money on movies? I don't know
if that was that. You know, like I said, I was
a nerdy kid. I pushed on my glasses. I don't
even know if I wore glasses when I was eight.
Yeah, I too. OK, so I... Like when I was younger,
I remember really liking Quentin Tarantino films.
Like when I was like 12. Which is weird. I think
that's probably the right age to get into Quentin
Tarantino. It's so not the right age to get into
Quentin Tarantino. It's about the right maturity
to like all of the stuff he does, but not to
understand all of the subtext and whatnot. He's
got a point. There's a lot of fake gore and a
couple of jokes that are blue. I just remember
like really caring about cinematography when
I was a kid for some reason. You always have
and always will. Like I started watching DVD
commentaries when I was like 12 or whatever,
I don't know. I've never seen a single movie
all the way through with commentary. Oh my gosh,
I would watch, I would like, I think... Like
I remember clerks and watching the commentary
on clerks and then Jeff Smith is just or Kevin
Smith. Sorry. He's just like like talking about
all the shots and like what he had to do to make
a film. And I was like, that sounds like fun.
And I don't know. It's a hard thing to do is
make films, but I always wanted to do it. We
dabbled. We dabbled. We have we have some really,
really terrible movies on Vimeo. Yeah. Like,
like, I still use that. They did in 2004. No,
six, six, six, seven. Because no, it had to be
seven, eight, because that was before YouTube
could have HD. Yeah. YouTube was this really
crappy website that if you wanted to throw up
like essentially vine quality stuff, you could.
The Mio was like hey if you want to be a legitimate
artist on the internet I bought a $400 video
camera just to make stupid movies. Yeah Did it
have a giant shoulder mountain was about the
size that you know came halfway out in front
of you and went halfway behind you No, although
my dad had a VHS recorder like that. No, this
was a very small handheld, you know, it's like
2008 at this point It amazes me, more specifically,
and I hate to say this, but it's the only reference
I can come up with. In reality television, like
Big Brother, it amazes me how far, in 15 years,
that show has been on the air for, even though
they're up to Season 16 or whatever else, it
started in 2000, so that show has been on for
15 years at this point. In the year 2000, I remember
them just having these giant... ceiling -mounted,
completely super long cameras and then now this
year they're like wall -mounted, almost invisible
rotators at this point. The technology has come
so far when it comes to video cameras. It's very
interesting. All right, so what kind of, so you
guys aren't just into movies even though you
do a movie podcast on our network here, but What
kinds of movies do each of you really gravitate
towards? Do you have a favorite genre? Do you
have a genre you will not watch? I don't have
a genre I won't watch, but I tend to gravitate
towards anything that is light -hearted and is
just fun. But, I don't know, probably like romantic
dramas I'm not really into. That's probably the...
I mean, it depends. If it's really good, then
if I hear about it being really good, I might
watch it. What's the one romantic drama that's
really good? It's got everyone, love actually.
Love, yeah, I haven't seen that one. Like it's
got bits of comedy sprinkled in, but it's actually
really good. We should sit down and watch it
just so you can see something from a genre you
don't normally watch. I also, I don't want to
say I won't watch any movie genre, but I don't
want to watch like anything incredibly graphic.
Like if it's meant to scare you. Whether it's
a thriller or a horror or a, you know, violent,
like, Texas Chainsaw Massacre type. I don't,
it doesn't do it for me. I'm not too into the
whole, like, the gore aspect of horror, but I
really like psychological stuff. Stuff that'll
give me a nightmare. I'm excited. No, dude. Nightmares
are the worst. I'm with Matt. I don't need nightmare
fuel. I love it. I do not need nightmare fuel.
I had enough nightmare fuel as a kid Freddy Krueger
and Jason and yeah for some odd reason which
board to I just I Don't know. I just haven't
I am so far away like Thrill like thrillers and
suspenseful stuff is fine, but the actual horror
genre That is the one thing where I draw the
line when it comes to movies like nope not doing
it Yeah as a kid my parents actually would call
up other parents and be like hey He can't watch
any of the Freddy Krueger stuff like he watched
one of them and he had nightmares for a week
So like just whatever you do Don't do it. So
that was always a thing Growing up my mom and
dad wouldn't let me Watch those kind of movies
for different reasons, but let's not get it.
Oh, man. All right. Let's see here. Favorite
movie of last year, 2014. Oh, cool. Oh, I was
like, I'm still in 2014 months. I was like, 2013.
Oh, no. Oh, man. Well. I'll go first since Nate's
thinking. I want to say the most enjoyable time
I had in a theater was Grand Budapest Hotel.
Oh, shoot. Like Nate went out and bought it like
day one when it hit DVD. And it was just it's
so good and so much fun and so enjoyable. And
I'm going to say that that was probably my favorite
movie. But the movie I want to suggest to everyone
is. Hercules, the second one with Dwayne Johnson
instead of the earlier one, The Legend of Hercules,
that was terrible. Because Hercules is the greatest
fantasy movie I think I've ever seen in a theater.
It blows all the Lord of the Rings out of the
water. It's better than The Hobbit. It's better
than, what was that, The 300? Either of them,
but definitely better than the newest one that
came out in the same year. So yeah. Yeah, I'm
with the Grand Budapest Hotel. I've watched it
more times than any other movie last year that
came out, so that has to be my favorite. Chef
was really good. I liked Chef. It was so lighthearted.
You knew exactly where it was going the whole
time. I know how this is going to end within
five minutes of this movie, and I know what I'm
going to see, but it was still a very enjoyable
trip. All right, outside of movies, what... All
right, so I listened to the Amazing Spider -Man
2 episode. We were very different in your Amazing
Spider -Man 2 episode. Wait, what? You had Amazing
Spider -Man 2 episode on the regular M -Wire.
Oh, right. No, no, no. I mean, I listened to
yours. I listened to yours and ours was very
different to yours. Yeah, yeah, because we don't
agree on that movie, apparently. I found that
I don't agree with most people on that movie.
You know, the only looking back on it, and I
haven't seen it since we did that that episode
of MWIRE. I just like how they incorporated.
Everything with the music in the fight scenes.
That's really what I like about it that entire
movie like the whole lightning fight scene how
the music is is Interspliced with each part of
the the cinematography as they're fighting each
other That's really my number one favorite thing
about that movie. Let's face it the spider -man
franchise probably I hate to say this because
Everyone know everyone should know by now listening
to me for seven years how much I hate when they
reboot stuff but at this point i'm thinking it
needs a reboot again i think they announced that
about a month ago are you kidding me no it's
one it's one of the three things i'm really upset
about that we haven't been doing at uh weekend
at the movies oh it's because that was that was
like i don't know if it's a hundred percent official
but yeah like the the word is out that they're
they're considering rebooting it already that's
nuts i thought i thought the story was that marvel
and sony came up with some deal with the devil
to actually have two different Spider -Man universes.
Sony can do their stuff and Marvel can bring
in their own stuff. I don't know. I had heard
it was a co -production that was going to maybe
lead to Spider -Man being in the Avengers at
some future date while Marvel doesn't hold the
rights to the movies. But again, I don't have
any legitimate information. That's one of those
things I really go for is having an actual news
source that I can point to. But that's the rumors
that I've heard. Yeah. There's some sort of deal
to do that. It's it's nuts Which is I don't know
I find it very upsetting because um the very
first amazing spider -man movie I think is probably
gonna be the best spider -man movie we're ever
gonna see Like as far as being a comic book fan
that read has read the comic books You know going
back all the way to the first one and you know
secret wars and all the big stuff and even the
little stuff Like I think that captures. What
is spider -man? the best and I don't think it's
ever gonna happen again as well yeah um I don't
I just want Marvel to be able to use the character
I don't I don't want a rebooted I'll say this
now I don't want a rebooted film where they have
a third French Spider -Man franchise and they
have to tell the origin again we know he got
bit by a mother spider we get it You know, we
don't need another origin film. I just want Marvel
Studios to be able to actually use the character.
That's really all I want. I can get behind that
idea. That said, just like you said, everyone
knows the origin of Spider -Man. They could maybe
just gloss over it. They didn't give Hawkeye
an origin story at all. They didn't even give
him a solo movie. They just threw him in. He
was in Thor for two minutes and then he was in
The Avengers. Wait, he was in Thor? Yeah, remember
that? At the shield encampment around the hammer,
when Thor shows up to take the hammer back, he's
a sniper. He's about to shoot him. Jeremy Renner
and everything, using a bow. Okay. Yeah, there's
not a lot of things people remember about the
Thor movie The Thor movie is like the amazing
spider -man movie and the thing that you can
point to that people did like they are very very
similar movies and the things that they have
in common that the other movies don't have in
is a love story and I think comic book movies
are like action movies aimed more at men and
a lot of guys don't like love stories like that's
the main difference between those two and Say
Iron Man 1 or even Captain America whose love
story was barely barely touched I Had a date.
Yeah. Yeah, that's it You know I But see that
that to me and Captain America it was it was
a funny thing it was a It was a funny ironic
kind of thing. It was very lighthearted. It was
like a love story. It was like, oh, I want to
date her. She's pretty. Oh, I got in trouble
with this other lady. Oh, I'm in ice. Yeah. Oh,
I mean, you know. How could they have changed
that, though, in that movie? I mean, they had
so much going on with Red Skull and whatever
else, and him actually getting transformed. I
mean, that was really more so his. I mean, it'd
be great if they did something in three or four
or whatever they're going to do next with the
character, but... I honestly think that when
it comes to geeky movies, not just comic book
movies, but geeky movies in general, ever since
Attack of the Clones, no geek wants to see a
love story on screen when it comes to characters.
Because I'm sorry, Thor's girlfriend in Star
Wars 2 just absolutely sucked the two of them.
Oh my god, Christensen and Portman, ugh. See,
I feel like Natalie Portman and... Who was Obi
-Wan? Ewan McGregor. Those two were acting their
asses off. They're like, man, we have this crappy
script. We're surrounded by really bad actors.
And they're just trying so hard. Because you
watch them in anything. They're amazing. So it's
like, it's got to be direction. It's got to be
the script. Because those two are always great.
It's got to be Lucas. Yeah, honestly. Lucas?
Became a powerhouse in the 70s and 80s and like
by the time he started doing the prequels He
just iron grip like no one can tell me no because
it's mine And it's sad what we ended up getting
I don't think the first three the prequels are
as bad as a lot of people on the internet will
say I think there's some legitimately good things
in there, but yeah the love story in that was
no good Hayden Christian's not a very doesn't
do a good job in that I've heard he's a good
actor, which is why I want to see outcast the
one where he and Nick Cage become knights in
the mountains. I've been putting that one up
out there all day this last two weeks, but I
wanna see that, but yeah, he did a terrible job.
That said, the Thor, Thor 1's love story, also
very poorly written. It was really bad, and that
does not lend itself to that movie. That movie
was brought down by its love story, and I agree
with that wholly. It's just okay. Here's my thing
with Thor. It's not that I don't like the action
scenes in the movie It's not like I don't like
anything that we normally would like about an
action movie, but For me the character of Thor
is so unrelatable because he is supposed to be
this godlike creature from another world You
know and it just it's so I hate to say this but
the love story in that movie It's like two teenagers
just fumbling Trying to figure out because they
have no he is from a different world. He is from
different customs He doesn't get earth humor.
He doesn't get all that like the only time I
am even Interested in seeing Thor at this point
is when he's with the Avengers because that's
when it's funny and good Yeah, it's like Hulk
like Hulk movie because his Avengers movie is
Avengers time is great and isn't solo time is
Well, I don't know. I really like the Edward
Norton one, but apparently it didn't do well
enough to warrant another solo Hulk. You know,
I honestly think it's actors. It has to be the
friggin actors because Eric Bana in 2003 and
I'm sorry only because it's Ang Lee. I always
make this joke about that movie. It's Crouching
Tiger Hidden Hulk because that's all Hulk ever
did in that damn movie was just jump from From
Plateau to Plateau in the middle of the damn
desert reminded me so much of Lee's other work
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is also doing is
jump around and fighting each other But I honestly
think it's the actor and now that and people
when I was on our Canadian friends podcasting
network this week in geek this week geek net
we Everybody on there Mike dot and all of them
just made fun of me called me a geek called me
a ruffalo supporter everyone kept Pissing on
my parade when it came to me talking about Mark
Ruffalo as Bruce Banner in the Avengers and everybody's
like No, it's not gonna be it's gonna be horrible.
It's gonna be worse than Ed Norton. It's gonna
be this it's gonna be that and Look what happened
it turned into a billion dollar success, and
he's probably the best banner. We've had since
the 70s television show At least in my personal
opinion. But with Thor, I can't find anything
to relate to him at all. Like I said, I prefer,
and I don't know if you guys like this series
or not, I prefer when Thor is funny and interacting
with the Avengers. I love Superhero Squad Show.
I love that show. You know, how he was portrayed
in that was just great. What other comic book
movies or superhero movies do you guys like or
not like? Well, I'm very easy to please. I, you
know, I think that the Thor's love story was
very poorly done. But I like all everything Marvel's
done since they've gotten all the things that
they do have rights to do. I've been good. Almost
any movie that's had a third one, though, has
been you know, just thumbs down for me. Like,
honestly, and this might be the thing that people
will think I'm a terrible movie comic book guy,
but I don't like the Dark Knight trilogy. Like,
at all. A lot of people don't. Like, especially
the third one. Like, I haven't even seen the
third one. Like, it just looked that bad to me.
Like, the second one, I think, was overhyped.
I think it was a decent movie movie, but not
a very good Batman movie. And then the first
one was just a wreck. like just legitimate holes
that don't make sense the second one I always
have trouble when it comes to like I'll watch
it and then I'll get like halfway in and be like
I just saw some good Joker scenes I'm done like
Christian Bale doesn't excite me or he's not
it's terrible Batman even worse Bruce Wayne yeah
there's a worse bad group but he's bad he's bad
at both Heath Ledger does an amazing job acting
in that movie and that's all that movie has going
for it I could just watch the Joker scenes and
be done with that one Yeah, I like the Dark Knight
Batman Begins I like it once we actually see
but like the last Third of the film when we actually
see Batman doing stuff All right, so we're gonna
get into some strange geek territory here folks
and please remember these are just opinions okay,
so Matt From worst to first, who are your favorite
actors that have played Batman? Least to favorite.
Least to favorite? Well, then I'll just say Christian
Bailor out the bat. Of the original, the four
that were from the 80s to early 90s, there was
just Michael Keaton and George Clooney. Michael
Keaton, George Clooney, Val Kilmer. Kevin Conroy.
Okay, let me spit live -action film We throw
if we throw Kevin in there it's hands down Kevin's
the best all around I mean is Batman to every
I'm gonna throw it out. I haven't seen the the
40s and 50s serials like I want to see those
really bad But I haven't seen them so I can't
rate that guy, but uh we'll say And what no who
was the guy that I just said the the Dark Knight
guy he's Christian Bale Bale um Worst the best
Christian Bale Val Kilmer Probably Clooney after
that like no you do he's better than kill. Yeah,
really no you do you I don't like Val Kilmer
Cluny then Kilmer. Well, I don't know man. I
enjoy the Cluny movies. Cluny did nothing. No,
no the the Cluny movies are good for their what
they are yeah, but Cluny is terrible as Batman
in those. The only line that he had that was
even remotely funny was, this is why Superman
works alone. Yeah, no, like, see, that's why
I love Clooney, is that like, in that movie,
in those movies which are over the top and ridiculous,
kind of like, they're kind of like the Dark Knight
meets Adam West for no reason at all. Like, Joel
Schumacher was just going crazy with those. Like,
he is like, he's not either of those guys and
he doesn't belong at all and I find that even
better. Thankfully Clooney only played him once.
I still, I will defend Kilmer to the day I die
as a good Bruce Wayne. Not a good Batman, but
a good Bruce Wayne, because I thought he really
did justice to the emotional tones of the character
that was presented in Forever. I'm gonna have
to rewatch that one again. Those two... Like
how I need to rewatch Batman and Robin because
I fell asleep last time we watched it Yeah, I
only got about two -thirds in you didn't get
you only got half the ice puns. Yeah, that's
really Top -notch so then I guess after that
would be Who do we got left? We got a the guy
key Keaton and Adam West and I don't know I think
as far as a serious Batman Keaton's probably
done the best job and as far as Batman Adam West
has done the most entertaining job, but but the
problem is Like when I think about Batman, I
don't think about Michael Keaton at all. Yeah.
Like Batman in the movies is the least interesting
part of the movies. It's almost always. Yeah.
The rogue gallery is what brings you in. Yeah.
Because they're varied and he isn't. Yeah. He's
the sentinel justice, yada yada, hiding the shadows.
Yeah. And then they're all over the top and different.
Yeah. I mean, I care more about Christopher Walken
than I do Bruce Wayne. Christopher Walken? Christopher
Walken was the best part about Batman Returns.
The rest of that movie sucked, other than the
giant duck boat. Where was Christopher Walken
in Batman Returns? Are you kidding me? He was
Max Shrek! Yeah, I remember that. I remember
Danny DeVito being a really great guy. Oh my
god, how do you not remember Christopher Walken
as Max Shrek? I probably saw it in the mid to
early 90s and like twice. And you haven't seen
it since. Like, I definitely, two years ago I
read, I have the actual comic book adaptation
and I don't remember anyone looking like Christopher
Walken in that either. They didn't, we weren't
able to capture his Walken -ness. It's only one
extra long book. It's like an annual. So they
probably just couldn't keep all of that storyline
or whatever. I don't know. He was the one. He
was the one. What did curiosity do to the cat?
He was he was Max Shrek. He was Salinas boss
who shoved her out. Oh, is he the only shooter
like six times and then push it out a window?
Yeah, I remember that scene. I don't remember
walking. Yeah, he doesn't even do enough in that
movie. Is that all he does? Yeah, that's all
he does. Kills her in the beginning. Kills her
in the beginning, and then he tries to be the
political advisor to Danny DeVito's Oswald Cobblepot.
I'm sorry, folks. michael keaton's two portrayals
as batman 89 far surpasses returns returns to
me out of those four movies returns to me is
my least favorite it's probably the worst one
for me i just other than michelle pfeiffer in
the catsuit and seeing the hilarious joke of
the duck boat i just cannot get behind batman
returns at all whatsoever It's just so bad. Alright,
let's see. Favorite comic book series of 2014?
Oh man, I haven't read. See, the issue with comics
is I was huge into them. Huge that was really
where we bonded was yeah comic books namely the
series 52 right after uh, uh Then I went to college
and I racked up a ton of student debt and now
I'm paying that off And I don't have any money
for comics. There's like nothing in my budget
for comics. I haven't read a comic since 2012
probably Really? It's been three years since
you read any comics Wow to but I mean sometimes
well Don't even count and also I completely got
out of superhero comics like I'm if I read a
comic it's gonna be an independent one I'm gonna
read like I was really into chew. I don't know
if you know chew. Oh, yeah We we actually cut
my buddy JT and I we covered the first two volumes
on the pull bag last year Yeah, I read like the
first like 12 issues or something. It's really
good I haven't read them yet Geez So, yeah, I
don't know I haven't I haven't reading comics
at all but that being said Captain Marvel is
my favorite DC superhero and Captain America
is My favorite Marvel Super Captain Marvel doesn't
exist anymore. Uh Yeah, you should Sam whatever
as that was a very angering mistake that they're
never gonna change So I guess I, I mean, I haven't
been, sadly, I haven't been to Niels, which is
the place we go for comic books. Probably, well,
place we used to go for comics. Nate hasn't been
to Niels in like five years. I haven't been there
in, I don't know, like eight months. I want to
say the only book I bought religiously in 2014
was X Factor because Peter David is my favorite.
But I bought every issue of the current X Factor.
except for what's still in my stack, because
I haven't been there in eight months, so I've
got another eight issues to buy. I haven't read
a single one of them. I think it's on issue 20
or something. I haven't read a single one of
them. I haven't even finished the previous X
Factor series. I've got them all, though, because
I have to support Peter David whenever he does
something I enjoy, and I enjoy X Factor, because
I do enjoy cape books on like Nate. But the most
enjoyable comic book I read that was actually
published in 2014 was the first issue of The
Serenity Ongoing. I really like Firefly. Serenity
was a turn that I wouldn't have liked, but it
was enjoyable. I like almost everything Joss
Whedon does. And so I'm gonna say that that was
the most enjoyable comic. I enjoy comic. I enjoy
superhero comics. It's just... To keep them all
straight and have a ton of like like basically
for me if they're gonna be referencing other
comics I need to buy those comics and I just
I know I can't keep up. There's too many comics
to buy. Yeah, that's that's the same way I am
because it's like oh Okay, death of the family
in 2012 or whenever it was death of the family
when the Joker comes back And he has no face
and this and anything and it's like, okay, so
we're gonna do these seven issues in Batman You
know the the Batman series and then we're gonna
have all these other issues and all these other
titles that you'll you know that are all gonna
be tie -ins and I'm like oh God, but but I'm
with you Nate this year is past year in 2014
Specifically more so because of what DC does
and how they handled stuff that I just don't
care of how they've done the job that they've
done I've also stepped away from superhero books.
I want to read Marvel and we did do, and I have
read Marvel before, I'm just not current with
any Marvel titles, but DC that they cancelled
Batman Beyond. They're canceling Arkham Manor,
which just started this past year. Sadly, the
only title I think I'll probably be getting from
them the rest of this year is their He -Man title,
which is a licensed property. I've gone more
towards creator -owned or other licensed properties.
IDW is the king of comic book publisher when
it comes to licensed properties. They have Transformers,
they have Turtles, they have G .I. Joe, they
have Ghostbusters, which sadly is ending. But
with Image Comics, I read to, let's see what
else, Sex Criminals, Cowl. At this point, I'm
just looking for really interesting books. I
don't have a specific genre as long as it appeals
to me, like if I read a little blurb about it
or whatever else. Who is your most hated comic
book villain? The one you just absolutely cannot
stand at all From like a like I don't like this
guy he's so evil or like a man he's never written
well You pretty much just don't like them all
around okay Honestly for a mixture of the two
I don't like Lex Luthor I feel like I feel like
you know There's a lot of interesting parallels,
especially between the movies. He does a really
interesting job in the movies, back in the Richard
Donner days. In the comic books, I don't know,
I rarely like him. In Smallville, I didn't watch
much Smallville, but what I saw in Smallville,
I didn't like him. I just don't like Lex Luthor.
Like I mean he doesn't have like I feel like
he's supposed to be the he's the everyman Fighting
the the everyman but like he's the the downtrodden
Goliath David situation, but it's like I don't
like him. He's like he's not relatable. He's
very rarely written like a genius and He's just
not entertaining to me Hmm Nate I I don't even
know because if a comic book villain isn't intriguing,
I've already forgotten about him. I get you.
I get you. So I don't know. Cool. Cool. All right.
So what can we expect from you guys in the future?
Do you guys even know? Well, so Weekend at the
Movies was... Kevin out to a solo's like baby,
right? Yeah, that was the one he did that I know
he did and he's been there from the beginning
um and He has since gotten a very serious relationship
that The day that they can spend together her
only day off in the week is the day that we're
both free to record That's that's what killed
it And then I got married and then went on a
two week vacation. Nate and I also, Nate and
I did another podcast together, not syndicated
anywhere, just us doing a thing, just to give
it a try, see what it was like without Kevin.
And it was a lot of fun, but then, just in a
very short succession, almost about a month after
we stopped recording Weekend of the Movies, Nate
got married, which involved a bachelor party
and then preparing for the wedding and then.
the thing you do after the wedding? What is that?
The honeymoon. And the preparation for the honeymoon.
And then once they got back, they moved out of
Kevin's house. So they had to do a movie. It
was just immediately chewed up all the time.
We couldn't do that podcast either. And then
that one has a lot more to it than Weekend at
the Movies. That said, I haven't talked to Kevin.
But I am literally just itching to do it again.
It's one of those things that really bothers
me. And if we have to try to find another day,
or if we do it without Kevin and he jumps in
sometimes, I don't know. But I really miss this.
Especially when I did the wars episode just recently.
It was just like, this is where I belong. This
is what I should be doing at least. Even if it's
only an hour or two a week, it's something that
I need in my life. Yeah, you know once you get
into pod It's kind of like that old saying I
Thought I was out and they pulled me back in
you know Once you get into podcasting. It's really
really hard to drop it I mean some people might
be able to depending on how their personalities
are but Once you pick it up, and you have a knack
for it you and you really really enjoy what you're
doing It's it's a hard thing to step away from
Yeah But like really really like you said when
when the hurdles start coming. It's the last
thing that you do Oh, yeah, but it's right there
in your mind Yep, absolutely All right. Well,
I hope this gave everybody a little insight into
Matt and Nate and Who knows we might see them
in other things on the geek cast or radio network.
I do know Since this episode is probably going
to go up the Friday after the tournament is over,
I do know are both are both of you going to be
on the championship? If I'm if I'm invited, I'm
going to be there. Well, sure. I mean, I was
only in one of the rounds, which is a sad thing.
Yeah, because I work at UPS. And so when you
guys were going to record late at night during
the week, it was like, no, I like I'm going to
even if I recorded, I would have to. close my
mic, close my laptop, and run out the door to
get to work. It just wasn't gonna work. And I
was also gonna have to lose an hour of sleep
to do it. So as soon as Christmas was over though,
I was right there. Awesome, awesome. uh... but
yeah who knows uh... you know you might you might
see these guys elsewhere on the cast or network
and hopefully weekend at the movies will return
soon uh... coming up next on the geek cast radio
i believe it's going to be uh... Trying to think
here it it's either gonna be random fandom part
two or it's going to be comedians. We love and
hate so not exactly sure and I'll say this right
now our Our second annual GCR awards are going
on go over to the website click the the banner
