About this Episode

Josh and Rob from the Turtle Flakes podcast join the hosts to discuss their history with the franchise, including their favorite merchandise, memories of the films, and the evolution of the IDW comic series. The group also debates the artistic merits of different Turtles video games and shares their initial reactions to the 2014 live-action movie trailers, discussing concerns about character design and production choices.

Hey guys, Raphael here at the Teenage Mutant

Ninja Turtles. Did you say podcast? Dudes! Dudes!

You're listening to a podcast on the Gamecast

Radio Network. You're listening to the Gamecast

Radio Network. Bye. Hello and welcome to GeekCast

Radio. This is episode 71. I am your host, TF2

and Mike. Joining me is Steve Megatron. Hello.

Hello. And you might be wondering why we have

two Transformers names for a Turtles episode,

but anyway, we are joined by the flakiness of

turtle flakes themselves, Josh and Rob. What's

going on, guys? Yeah, Rob's pretty flaky. Oh,

take off, I am not. You're the flaky one. Oh,

okay. Uh, so... Steve, when did they... They

joined last year, right? Or was it this year?

No, it was this year. I thought it was 2013.

It was. I don't know. I don't remember. It all

runs together. Time is blended together for me.

I cannot remember. We are all living in that

Dimension X place. That's right. But Turtle Flakes

is about to, as of this recording, this episode

will release after their one -year anniversary,

but they're about to celebrate their one -year

anniversary. Josh, how did you approach podcasting?

Were you a listener of podcasts, or did you think

to yourself, oh, I can do that, or how did that

happen for you? For me, I started listening to

podcasts probably about three or four years ago.

I started listening to Retro Gaming Roundup,

which is my favorite podcast of all time. I don't

know if you guys are familiar with it, but it's

a six hour long podcast. It's got monthly episodes

that are six hours long, and they've got tons

of interviews with really great video game industry

people, such as Ted Dabney, co -founder of Atari,

Jay Smith, creator of the Vectrex, just tons

of great interviews. So I learned a ton. just

from listening to podcasts, because I used to

drive from Ohio to Michigan for work. One week

a month, I'd have a three -hour drive there,

three -hour drive back, so I could get an episode

in, because they were six hours long. It was

a perfect fit. But I really enjoyed listening

to it, and they were always really big on encouraging

people of being active in the community and promoting

other podcasts. And I finally got caught up with

all theirs and decided to check out another one.

And that's when I downloaded the Retro Junkies

for the first time, which was Robin Landon's

podcast. And I was listening to it and, you know,

Robin Landon were a lot more laid back and kind

of it was more just like two friends kind of

hanging out and talking about stuff. And, you

know, after I started listening to that, I was

like, well, you know, I could do that. I kind

of do that already. You know, that doesn't sound

so bad. And, you know, just it sounded like they're

having so much fun. And I thought it. It'd be

cool to get in on it. So I was secretly hoping

to get on Retro Junkies because it sounded like

they're having so much fun. And so I started

commenting on a bunch of their stuff and they

did three Ninja Turtles episodes, which were

really great. And I was commenting a ton on those.

And I think Rob ended up messaging me and saying,

you know, hey, we're thinking about, you know,

spinning off and doing a turtle show. Would you

be interested? And I was like, heck yes. Yeah,

I would love to. So that's that's kind of how

I got into it. What about you, Rob? Uh, yeah,

well, you know, first of all, thank you, Josh,

for saying that. That was really nice, man. Yeah,

you know, for me, it was very similar to kind

of Josh's situation. Like, I was a long -time

listener of a retro gaming podcast called The

Retro League, you know, and it's still on. It's

like a, oh gosh, they throw up to like 250 episodes,

something like that. And, you know, I had been

listening to that. It was a weekly show, and

I was just a big fan. Where I was working, I

could listen to podcasts a lot of times throughout

the day. And, you know, kind of on my way to

and from work and school and everything. So,

you know, I just decided one day I was helping

my best friend Landon move, and I just decided

one day, man, it'd be fun to kind of just do...

Podcasts about retro gaming, you know, just nothing

fancy nothing You know super amazing just just

hanging out and we did it and we really kind

of grew into it and really enjoyed recording

You know the biggest the biggest problem with

our first podcast of retro junkies was is scheduling

And it was the first podcast we'd ever done.

So it was it was challenging You know kind of

coming up with the time to edit the enough time

to prep for the show itself You know, a lot of

trial and error stuff, but we had fun on the

show and we really enjoyed it. And that kind

of opened up a whole new world. Like we started

our Facebook page, you know, for the show and

started promoting episodes through that. And

that's how I got to meet some very, very close

friends of mine, you know, that I have today.

And Josh is one of them. You know, had we not

started this podcast, which eventually, you know,

it's kind of on hold now. You know one day we'd

like to start it back up and everything but you

know turtle flakes was kind of like a child of

the retro junkies network and and you know had

we not started that Turtle flakes would never

have existed and I would have never met Josh

and you know Josh and I are very close friends

now and You know the podcasting in a lot of ways

has kind of changed my life and and for the better

So You know, I've met a lot of friends, a lot

of people that, you know, sometimes you just

know when you strike a friendship with somebody,

you know, you think along the same lines, you

know, you laugh at the same kind of things and

stuff. And, you know, I've gotten to meet, as

a matter of fact, another very close friend of

mine is Nick Stevens, and I met Hintri Pot. Yeah,

I know. I met him through podcasting. And now

he and I, I mean, just like Josh, you know, we

text on a daily basis, we talk to each other,

you know, just, you know, if we're excited about

something cool we saw at the movies or something

like that, you know, but all that stuff never

would have started had we not started podcasting.

So, you know, and then we'll Basically the podcast

started all the Facebook page that we we decided

to build our own website and everything We've

interacted with people there and I don't know

It's just but it's been a lot of fun and just

just to be able to kind of talk to the listeners

and stuff It's been really cool and in turtle

flakes a lot of listeners have really kind of

poured out You know a lot of their appreciation

for the turtles for franchise and everything

and we've gotten to share that on the show And

I don't know it's it's been really fun and it's

been uh... very fulfilling and way more than

i ever thought it would be so so yeah alright

um... so i don't know what it is i've always

when i was a kid i obviously you know born in

eighty so i was seven by the time uh... yes i

know i'm old now i was seven by the time turtles

eighty -seven came out obviously and I don't

know, I always kind of really gravitated towards

Donnie. Probably the first reason would be, for

some strange reason, one of my two favorite colors

as a kid and even now are purple and black. So

I always really gravitated towards Donnie. Do

you guys have a certain turtle that you see attributes

in your own selves, Josh? Definitely Donatello,

because I'm a total nerd. I love collecting video.

I mean, obviously we all are, otherwise we wouldn't

be on this podcast, but I kind of think of myself

as hardcore nerd, I guess, because I'm really

into collecting video games, programming. I just

love everything technology -wise, like Kip from

Napoleon Dynamite. I sing that song sometimes.

And yeah, just I like having projects and stuff

like that And I always thought Donatello was

cool like I think RAF growing up RAF was the

coolest one you know because he was like you

know bad and everything and then you know the

one I wanted to be most like was Leonardo because

he was really wise and you know the good guy

like the true blue hero But ended up becoming

a Donatello nerd which I'm cool with What about

you, Rob? You know, growing up, I was definitely,

just like you two, I was definitely a huge Donatello

fan. I don't know why he was my favorite, he

just was. And nowadays, if we're talking about

who best matches, I guess, our own personalities,

that's a hard one, man, because I would have

to probably say Michelangelo. uh... you know

i i i'm odd i always laugh and and it's to the

point where actually i've had listeners say quit

laughing so much like it annoys them you know

i got like a high tittery laugh you know it's

like high -pitched and uh... you know i i i know

sometimes that annoys people and that's fine

but i'm not gonna stop i mean i just you know

i i'd try not to take life too seriously and

and uh... and you should see this guy with a

pizza man he's master of the whirling pizzas

I'm sorry. He does that every episode. He's got

to stop. He's killing me It's one of those things

I think nowadays I guess I'm more like Michelangelo

in that sense But you know as a kid growing up

a huge Donnie fan And I always kind of loved

the relationship they had you know and in the

comics and in in the movies and everything You

know poor crying poor crying Yeah, it was always

amazing. Yeah, what really shocked me about Mikey

is he's always been portrayed as the goofball

until Tom Waltz and Kevin Eastman came around

in IDW and actually made Mikey the heart of the

team. I mean, I'm sure he's always been the heart

of the team, but specifically in the IDW ongoing.

I mean, the... when he gets that letter from

from his his pizza delivery buddy woody it's

like oh my god this is so heart wrenching oh

see i've not got i've not gotten there yet i've

i've uh no but that that excites me because um

i remember uh toward the uh fourth volume um

you know when the turtles were older and everything

uh i remember there were a couple of issues where

michael angelo was on his own uh... and you see

them that tells the t m n t uh... uh... series

as well uh... and you might want to start crying

out is not on that i'm not going to miss out

on that is going to cry takeoff i am not go for

it man yes sir uh... well you know I'm talking

about like the main series I remember he got

separated from his brothers and he was in this

fighting tournament and I wish I remember which

issue it was and during that tournament you know

he always kind of almost had and I guess he masked

it through humor but he almost had self -esteem

issues and everything. And, you know, here he

is in this fighting tournament and he's fighting

against all these different aliens, you know,

from all these different planets or whatever.

And he actually becomes the champion all on his

own. His brothers are nowhere to be found. And,

you know, that's like the first time in his life

he realizes, wow, you know what? I can hold my

own. I don't need my brothers all the time. I'm

not just a goofball, you know? I'm not just a

comic relief of the comic franchise and everything.

And then again, you kind of see that in Tales

of the TMNT. I don't know if you guys have read

The Path, but that is... No, I have only read

the current IDW ongoing. Which is phenomenal,

by the way. Yeah, I'm with you. How far are you

guys so far? Because I know I heard the episode

where you guys talk about the first issue, but...

Yeah, Josh might be... I think I'm on issue like...

I think four or five, and then I read the Splinter

micro series, which I'm not sure exactly where

that falls in, but I think I'm probably about

issue five. I have all of them, because I bought

a huge collection off Craigslist, so I've got

like one, two, three, six, or whatever, but I

haven't read them all yet. Yeah, I I had bought

With the IDW series I had bought pretty much

all of the trades nice Pretty much I've see my

thing is with doing the pull bag our comic book

podcast discussion and review show is What I'll

do now is, if I get trades, I'll get them for

the show and then I'll take them back to my comic

shop, which allows you to trade in for store

credit to get other stuff. So that's what I've

been doing as I've been getting the coverage

done. But no, it's the IDW Turtles comic, the

main ongoing, not Animated Adventures. Animated

Adventures is fine and great if you're, you know...

if you're paying attention to the cartoon series.

And the way I look at the new animated adventures

is they're single stories that happen in between

the episodes of the cartoon, the 2012 cartoon

series, but the main ongoing. It is a love letter

to every piece of TMNT history. It really, really

is. Yeah, I'm very similar to Josh. Like, I think

I might be about 10 issues in. And I think I,

it's been a while since I've stocked up on the

newer issues. But yeah, just seeing the, you

know, the different way that they've done the

origin story, and yet it still works. And if

anything makes, you know, the connection between

Splinter and The Turtles even deeper and richer.

It's just, it's cool to see that 30 years later,

you think, wow, how else or what else can they

do with these turtles? I mean, they're finding

ways to revamp it and make it even better. And

Kevin Eastman, what he's done with IDW is phenomenal.

And Tom Walts. I mean, I'm so impressed with

what they've been doing. And I'm a little frustrated,

too, because I moved to a bigger city very recently

and you know There's about three four comic book

stores around my house and not one of them have

a really good or a decent turtle selection I'm

like dang. I'm and then online. I usually can

only find you know Issues from you know last

April and stuff, so I'm not sure exactly what

the best route is to find them Okay, well do

you alright? Let me ask you this really quick,

and then I'm sure Steve has some questions for

you guys Do you? Are you a print guy, or do you

not mind digital? Does it matter to you? Personally,

I would like, you know, the Turtles comics, I

would like them in print. But, you know, I'm

the kind of guy... I mean, just to be able to

read them. Exactly. I'm the kind of guy like...

For the turtles since I you know and Josh probably

be the same way we're such big fans I mean the

turtles it's my favorite comic book series out

of everything and I and I love comics in general

though I like Batman and and You know Transformers.

I mean, I like them all But for the turtles I

would pay for a digital and a print, you know

of the same issue. It doesn't matter to me Because

I can send you multiple links on Comixology that

will get you the collected editions. The trades

that they've put out in print are on Comixology.

All the microseries are on there and everything

else. So I can send you the links so you'd be

able to look at those and sign up for Comixology

if you wanted to. Oh, sweet. Yeah, please do.

Steve, what do you got for these turtle punks?

Turtle punks. Well, like, what's some of your

favorite Ninja Turtle merchandise that you've

gotten over the years? Ooh. That's a good question.

That is a very good question. Josh, you want

to go first? Um, geez, there's so much, so many

different things. Or maybe your longest running,

like the piece of merchandise you've had the

longest that holds some kind of a special memory.

Well, I know one right off the bat that would

be detective Donatello that was my first Ninja

Turtle and I'll never forget it because it was

one of those things It started a trend. It was

actually given to me. It was my sister's birthday

and we were at this like roller rink She was

like three and I was five And you know my sister

was getting all you know It was time for her

to open all the presents and everything and my

grandmother started this tradition where she

would not only get the the Grandchild who had

their birthday a gift but also the other one

a gift, you know And she gave me an inch turtle

and I had no idea really at the time what it

was I was like, oh, this is cool looking but

I don't know what this is and You know and then

later on I found out it was part of a cartoon

series and everything and and and I have that

toy It's it's a loose now I mean, that's the

first thing I always did as a kid was take them

out and play with them and then you know throw

them at things and stuff, but I still have that

Detective Donatello with me. That's probably

the only loose figure that I still have from

as a kid. I don't have anything that I had as

a kid any of the toys because I just didn't end

up taking those with me, you know, after I grew

up and left the house. But I guess one thing

that kind of is probably one of my favorite and

probably one of the most iconic is the the turtle

van, which I do have one now. You always, you

know, as a kid, I just that's that's the turtle

toy I would always think of because we always

had that in the toy box and that always ended

up coming out. So I did pick up another one recently,

but. Yeah, it's pretty cool. And I remember when

they, I think for the 25th anniversary when they

started re -releasing all the toys, I don't know

when, I don't remember off the top of my head,

was it, I can't do the math in my head right

now, but 2009. Yeah, 2009, okay. Yeah, I was

at Toys R Us and they happened to have the turtle

van like re -released on the shelf and I was

like, oh man, that's so cool. And that was, you

know, Started kind of getting more and more interested

and the turtles again, you know after seeing

that like see that it was coming back and being

popular again Oh, yeah, I remember that so it

was pretty cool Nice Funny enough. I actually

still have one old ninja turtle toy and that's

the 10 or 11 inch crank. Oh nice. I've never

even seen one in person I've had it since it

was new. The only problem is, is the little kind

of two prong thing that's on top of the head,

which seems to be the common thing that breaks.

And then I'm missing the the plastic door that

holds Crang in and when Crang's arms is broke

off, like the actual like brain part. Authentic

battle damage. But I still have it. That's all

that matters. And thank you guys for calling

the turtle van its proper name party wagon that

no the show You know, they're actually going

back to that in season 3 of Ninja Turtles, right?

What party wagon? Yeah, they actually have a

Volkswagen party wagon that they're gonna have

All right, you're gonna find out that that whole

show is just a prequel Wow Okay, so when you

guys okay, what were your Experiences with the

first live -action movies Oh gosh, well that

was a big one for me. That was the first movie

I ever saw, ever, at least that I remember seeing.

My mom might have taken me somewhere when I was

a baby, I don't know. But I do remember watching

the first Turtles film, and I'll never forget,

I was probably about five I guess, and the scene

where the Turtles, or April's apartment's burning

down, for some stupid reason I thought the Turtles

were still in there, and I started crying. And,

you know, my mom had to take me out of the theater

and everything, and, you know, I was like, but

they're burning in there! I was freaking out

and everything. And, you know, of course, my

mom reassured me, they're fine. The Turtles are

fine. I went in. I went back into the theater.

They were okay. And I just, after I cried, I

actually absolutely loved the movie. So yeah,

that was my first experience. And to this day,

I still think it's the best Turtles film that

was ever made. You know, that's just my personal

opinion. But yeah, that was a very... A fond

memory of mine. What about you, Josh? Love the

first movie right now. I would say the first

movie is my favorite But growing up the second

one I think it was on TV more and you know any

time they were on TV We'd always watch it, and

you know we'd start beating each other up. You

know try to imitate the movie, but Growing up

the second one was probably my favorite. I think

just because I was more familiar with it It was

on TV more and you know I was a huge vanilla

ice fan no No, I just and I guess Kind of felt

like it was funnier. I guess in the first there

was more it's cheesy comedy But you know when

you're a younger kid you didn't really notice

as much so as a kid I like the second one more

and then now the first one's definitely a lot

better. I enjoy the first one a lot more Now

and the third one is you know well I was gonna

say no one's even mentioned the third film yeah,

it's it's horrible and The worst part about it

is when you look at splinter you could tell they

didn't even create a bottom half for him. He's

always hanging out of a window. It looks like

he went to Chuck E. Cheese and ripped one of

the things off the wall and turned it into Splinter.

Welcome to Splinter's house. Splinter, no! Oh,

that's awesome. Oh my God. I made it funny. I

made another funny. All right. The third film,

it has its moments. Yeah, it's terrible. It's

not it has it has its moments. Yeah, it's The

crazy thing about the third film actually is

There's a little Easter egg about Third film

came out in what? 93 93 about five years later

in 98 No, actually, it's the first film not not

the third film. I'm sorry eight years later in

98 in Michael Bay's Armageddon April O 'Neill

has a guest starring role. Judith Hogg plays

Will Patton's ex -wife or wife, the one with

the kid, where he brings the space shuttle to

the kid in Armageddon. Really? Yeah, as soon

as I saw Armageddon, I'm like, hey, wait a second,

what's April O 'Neill doing in this movie? What's

she doing there? But the third film, I think

my favorite moment... of it is, and honestly

for me, Donnie and Mikey are my two favorite

turtles. I have nothing against Leo and Raph,

but Donnie and Mikey are where the comedy is,

because Leo and Raph are just way too damn serious,

because that's how they're supposed to be. But

with Donnie and Mikey, Donnie's trying to look

at the blacksmith or whatever else, and Mikey's

over there making burnt pizza, and he burns the

pizza and he's like... Hmm Frisbee also good

zing it hits the it hits the it hits the blacksmith

and Don's like it wasn't it wasn't me It was

Mike with the thing. I love that I do remember

I do remember one scene in the third film where

Donato slips or falls or something he goes help.

I'm a turtle. I can't get up Yeah, that's funny

you sounded just like him Yeah, that was when

Corey Feldman came back as Donatello, too. Corey

Feldman, Barry Gordon, and Rob Paulson. Three

best Donatello's. Yeah, I would agree with that,

definitely. Donnie and number two I don't know

who did that was the two things even as a kid

two things I hated about the second movie It

wasn't Corey Feldman is Donnie or it wasn't the

same voice as the first movie because I didn't

know who back then I don't know whatever but

and number two was Keno really they couldn't

have gotten Casey back come on you know it all

got a little bit of trivia on the third film

uh... we recently uh... couple months ago uh...

on our uh... video game cartoon podcast uh...

pixels the animation i interviewed matt hill

the voice of captain in the game master on the

way yeah yeah yeah we we can't wait i i interviewed

him with uh... my buddy uh... tb's mister neil

and interesting fun fact about that hill He was

the suit actor for RAF in the third movie, and

he was the voice of RAF in that horrible live

-action television show. No way, really? Yep.

You mean Rob's favorite, The Max Mutation? No,

take off, that's your favorite. You're the one

who bought five DVDs. You're the one who decided

to watch like four episodes in a row. Oh, I didn't

know you like dude. You got to pick this up.

It's the greatest thing ever My mouth get out

of here People trade sending it to me and I said

it back Rob made a love song about Venus de Milo.

Oh Now you're now you're hitting me where hurts

No way just trying to serenade her with his guitar

and his oh, yeah his shiny white teeth speaking

of which, you know, what would You know we were

actually talking about that the one of the creepiest

I think most awkward moments now Josh and I We've

seen Turtles 3 and you know honestly and Josh

I'm sure you'd agree Turtles 3 is not near as

bad as some of the other turtles things We've

seen you know like we wish you a turtle Christmas.

Oh the atrocities That was pretty good, but one

of the most awkward moments. We had witnessed

was when Michelangelo is hitting on Venus de

Milo, and apparently, when we first saw it, we

didn't know that they weren't brother and sister,

and that was like a huge departure, you know,

when, well, Venus de Milo as a character is a

huge departure anyway, but, you know, to my understanding,

Now, we're trying to go through the next mutation

kind of blind, so we don't know the whole backstory

and everything as we're watching the episodes.

But to my understanding right now is that they're

not actually brothers in the next mutation, because

Leo says something to Venus or something like

that. Like, oh yeah, we were all just these mutated

turtles. We're not really related. You know,

we just stick together. And I'm like, what? How

do you do that? And then you see, you know, Michelangelo

hitting on Venus DeMille. I was like, this is

weird. This is it was. He was totally creeping,

man. It was like his muscles in front of her

and just kind of getting in bags, dude. He's

like staring at her and like like creeping up

behind her, dude. It was making me uncomfortable.

Yeah, right. I was like, I got to turn this off.

But for the sake of our listeners, we forged

forward, man. Right. Yeah, because anything for

the listeners. Yeah, right. Horror. Oh, man,

that's funny. Have you guys seen the the the

holiday video for the turtles? We wish you a

turtle Christmas. Oh, you guys got to watch it.

It's so it's it's so bad. So bad you want to

get out your eyes so bad It's one of those things

like it turned out to be because you know once

again Josh and I like we went into it fresh Well,

we didn't really know anything about it and you

know like I listened to it once since then and

I don't know why but Yeah, it was one of our

funny episodes just because it was so bad and

we were cracking up so much and you can kind

of just, ugh. You guys gotta watch it just if

you want a good laugh. It's pretty good. The

costumes are horrible. The story makes no sense.

And it's like, they have like black tennis shoes

on instead of like turtle feet. It's hilarious.

Oh my god. Yeah, it's bad. I, um... About a month

or so ago. I injured my my left ring finger and

for about four or five days I had to basically

use my index my middle finger and my thumb and

I'm like, how do the turtles do this? I could

never do this like like seriously, I need a friggin

claw They hired stunt doubles I'm trying to think

here. Give people a brief, for those that don't

know, for those that are listening to Geekcast

Radio that might not listen to your old show,

give them a brief rundown of what you all cover.

Because I know you guys have separate episodes

for different things. I know you have green screen.

I know you have comic episodes. So give us a

rundown of what Turtle Flakes is. Awesome. Josh,

you want to do the honors? Sure. So with Turtle

Flakes, we cover basically everything. When we

have our larger episodes, there are probably

about an hour. We'll do a comic. We do a cartoon

or one of the TV show reviews. And then we also

do video. Well, we've done one video game in

a partner episode with two dudes at NES. We cover

the toys. So pretty much anything turtles, comics,

videos, toys. And in some cases video games we

do we haven't really done a ton of in -depth

video game reviews other than the one crossover

episode But we'll probably be doing another one

in the future We do turtle news. We get listener

feedback We watch the the new movie the new movie

trailer that came out and kind of give our thoughts

on that and then we try To get interviews too.

So we've had Pat freely Jim Lawson and Kevin

Eastman And yeah, so we try to cover all things

turtle and we like so we kind of do the 87 series

and then one of the 87 toys And then we kind

of switch it up. We'll do a 2003 episode one

of the 2003 toys So we're slowly just kind of

trying to go through everything turtles But I

miss anything Rob I nailed it man cool Um, yeah,

I remember having, as a kid, I remember having

the turtle blimp. It lasted all of five seconds.

Oh, yeah, I understand, man. I had the turtle

blimp too, but I didn't break it. Oh, that's

rare. Yeah, that was my present for getting my

tonsils out as a kid. That's a good trade, dude.

I do that to me. Yeah, me too. Shut up and take

my tonsils, give me the... It's like the fry

thing. Shut up and you take my money. Shut up

and take my tonsils. Oh my god, that's so hilarious.

That's a show title right there. There we go.

Shut up and take my tonsils? That should be in

the new reality show. You won't have anybody

talking that's unintelligent. Oh my god. Alright.

Favorite turtles video game? Oh man. That's a

hard one. Oh, not for you, Rob. Everyone knows

what your favorite is. Go for it, man. You got

a good story about this one. Oh man, it's not

really a good story, man. You don't think so?

I don't know. There's really no point to it.

It was a really good childhood memory. I gotta

go with Turtles 3. I really do. It was just one

of those things. A buddy of mine had this pool

party. It was probably about five or six. uh...

he got turtles three and we we just we'd played

it up and uh... his house and everything and

always always kinda wanted and i asked for christmas

uh... of the following year and uh... i did get

it and i've just i played that game so much and

i just thought the music was so good uh... and

i was kind of feel bad about that game because

i think it was kinda overshadowed by the arcade

game you know the port for the any as the second

game And then Turtles in Time, which came, I

think, like six months after Turtles 3. So it

was kind of stuck in the middle, and I think

it didn't kind of get its due, but I thought

it was one of the best Nintendo Entertainment

System games of all time, you know? I just, I

absolutely love it. The only gripe I would ever

have about that game is the ending. It's just

pretty much like, good job, you did it! And then

that's it, so... You know, I guess it wasn't

a major payoff. Want to try again? You know,

that was it. But yeah, I got to definitely go

with Turtles 3. Mine's classic, the Turtles in

Time, just because I played it so much with my

brothers and friends. A lot of good memories

of that game, great music. That's probably my

favorite one just because I probably played that

one the most and have a lot of good memories.

I'm kind of starting to like the the original

game for the NES a little bit more now that I've

played through it some more because You know

a lot of people rip on that one saying like it's

impossible super hard or whatever But the more

I play through it It's actually not that difficult

once you you know if you find where the pizzas

are you can get the power -ups They actually

make the game pretty beatable, and I just like

that. It's different than all the other ones

And to me it's not quite as repetitive as all

the beat -a -mumps because you know once you've

played through Turtles in Time like 50 times

You know which enemies are in which sections

and where they come from and it's just the same

thing over and over But with the first game,

you know, it's everything's kind of randomly

generated So I think it's just a little bit more

replay value on that and you don't always have

someone to play with you. So I'm starting to

like that one a lot more Yeah, I the funniest

thing about Turtles in Time is that they ripped

off f0 Oh, for the scene with the, what is it,

the future scene where you're on those kind of

like hoverboard things. Yep. Yeah, yep. Yeah,

I forget what, there's a certain mode that that's

called. It's like mode six or something like

that. Yeah, they love using that on the Super

Nintendo. Just to show it off, yeah. Yeah, that

was an awesome one. It's neutrino mode. Rob loves

the neutrinos. They're like his favorite characters.

Yeah, he he dropped out so I'm gonna have to

we're gonna have to We're gonna take a quick

break come back with Josh and Rob from turtle

flakes after this Ninja pizza Pizza that vanish

quickly without trace ah and we are back after

crying basically Kidnapped Rob. It's true. Yeah,

and he did horrible horrible things to you in

dimension X with Venus de Milo Yeah, so I'm happy

to be back oh You don't sound that regretful

Yeah, I cannot I cannot bring myself to even

watch the next Mutation I don't know how you

guys are getting through it because as soon as

I saw the power as much as I am a Power Rangers

fan as soon as I saw the in space crossover with

it. I'm like, uh, no Well funny thing is is I

got that for review and I sent it to Mike. Oh

No, I didn't no you didn't Yeah, I trust me.

I would have known if you didn't know you did.

Yes. I said something else to you that that's

right It was it was Power Rangers side that one.

I had Alright so let's talk about the Giants

The giant nose in the room, what are your alls

that were where? We're a little ways away from,

or actually we're a few ways away from the movie.

The new movie actually already released by the

time this episode airs. Um, but we haven't some

weird time travel displacement thing. We haven't

actually seen it as of this recording, but, um,

what are your old thoughts initially on the trailers

and the noses and the fact that April O 'Neill

is a giant slut now, um, Well, it's not mine

Josh what are your thoughts on the new movie

and are you gonna go see it? Well, I'm absolutely

going to go see it. Um, I'm excited to see that.

There's another turtles movie out now I've you

know, I'm Skeptical sort of that. I don't know

if it's gonna be any good or not. I'm kind of

nervous but you know When I saw the trailer like

I'd been waiting to see the trailer. I don't

remember what movie I was watching It might have

been Captain America 2 And the trailer had come

on and I didn't even know that it was the Turtles

trailer, right? Because you just you see like

a huge building for the first trailer and just

it's just kind of generic and you don't really

know it seems like it's gonna be just a generic

action movie about Counterterrorism or something.

I have no idea and it wasn't until it was like

three -quarters of the way through the movie

until I realized it was actually a turtles trailer

and and then I saw them sliding on their backs,

you know down that snow -covered hill and then

There was like an SUV or something and it just

it all happened so fast and the only takeaway

I had was When Mikey takes off his mask, I think

it was Mikey and showed his face and I was just

like This is not at all like anything I had seen

before for the turtles I mean, and I was just

completely blown away that I Didn't realize it

was turtles and that he reviewed they never take

their masks off. So it was like Usually they

have like an epic intro and Rob and I talked

about this before, you know, like the first movie

you just see shadows. You don't see the actual

turtles. And then, you know, it's always like

there's a huge reveal and you're always like

anticipating some crazy action to happen. And

in this, they just kind of flash on screen and

he rips his mask off. It was just kind of anticlimactic.

And I don't know, I was just kind of taken taken

back. But obviously I think they look weird.

I. I'm kind of thinking that people are eventually

going to warm up to it once they see them moving

around in the movie. I mean, maybe not. I like

the original turtles, obviously, the way they

look, but I guess overall, I'd say I'm excited

to see it. I hope that it's good. I'm giving

it kind of like a 50 -50 shot as to whether it

will be or not. But at the end of the day, at

least I get to see more turtle content, right?

So, I mean, even if it's bad. At least I got

to go see another turtles movie. Maybe I may

or may not watch it again, but At the interview

that we did with Kevin Eastman Kevin's actually

pretty excited about it And he was actually involved

to some degree with the development of the movie

So I've got hopes that there will be at least

at least some of it will be really good You know,

so I I'm it's definitely I would say it's probably

gonna be worth watching just to find out what

happens Right what about you Yeah, I'm totally

like Josh with this, you know, it's one of those

things where I actually we waited to Well, Josh,

I think did you watch the trailer first Josh

or did we both watch at the same time? We watched

it at the same time. And then, for some reason,

our recording dropped or something. Like, we

didn't get the published episode. My computer

again. Yeah. I think you ran out of hard drive

space because you had to look just a mile up.

Oh, will you stop it? So, yeah, it was one of

those things when I first saw the very first

trailer. I have to admit, I was let down, and

it was for the same exact reasons as what Josh

mentioned, you know, the look of it, the fact

that it's just, and I know it's just a trailer,

but it just, boom, turtles in your face, there

was no, like, ninja aspect to it, there was no

dark, you know, New York City kind of vibe to

the whole thing. I was kind of let down by the

first trailer. And then I watched another one,

it was a little bit longer, and I got to see

what Shredder looked like. It felt, the second

trailer I saw, it felt more like a Turtles film.

It felt more like, okay, it is darker. Okay,

you know, sure, you got your goofy parts and

stuff, and I still don't like necessarily the

way they look, but it gave me a little bit more

hope. And then hearing... Josh and Josh's interview

with Kevin Eastman, which I'm so jealous that

he got to talk to him and I had to work, but

hearing Kevin sounds so positive about it. I've

got hope. And if I'm let down, that's okay. Uh,

that's alright because, you know, for the same

reason Josh mentioned, I still get to take my

wife. Uh, we still get to go. As a matter of

fact, we're going to go to Pizza Hut. I'm going

to order a Michelangelo pizza and then we're

going to go see the Turtles film right after.

So, uh, I've already got the day planned. Really

looking forward to it. So, um, you know, it is

what it is and I'm very excited to see another

Turtles film. Yeah. I was really nervous, uh,

because there were those rumblings on the internet

about, uh, the Turtles being aliens. Yeah. And

I was like, well, before the trailer came out,

I was like, I really hope I don't end up hating

this, you know, because I was I was just nervous

about what they were going to do. And I remember

we were reading some of the comics, excuse me,

for the show. And I think it was one of the original

series. And someone, someone calls the turtles

aliens. And then like, they've got the, you know,

the classic two page spread action scenes and

the turtles are like in the air. And there's

just huge word bubble that says, and like all

caps, we're not aliens. And I was going to photocopy

that and send it to Michael Bay if, if you made

him aliens, because I was so upset about that.

I was like, That was my biggest fear for this

movie and it seems like they went the other way

on it and I'm I'm kind of hoping and like I kind

of assumed that Kevin Eastman is the reason why

that changed if that ever was the case I don't

know that it really was but and that's the other

kind of misconception everyone has and You know,

I am NOT gonna sit here and defend Michael Bay,

but I will you know defend him on this point

He's a producer on this movie. Yes producers

have some influence, but this is not his Direction

this is libsman. This is and everybody's like,

oh well The trailers all say Michael Bay in huge

letters, and I'm like, so? He's the name, but

he's not the one in charge of the direction of

the film. Yeah, the name just draws money, yeah.

I mean, I just kind of get really mad about that

because it's like really seriously, you're going

to blame Bay for something he's not even listed

as a director on seriously. What about you, Steve?

What were your initial thoughts after seeing

some of the trailers for the new movie? Like

I mentioned some of it in in altered geek and

but My thing was I like the I like the darkness.

I like the You know the the fact that the turtles

are a little bit bigger I'm not fond of the stereotypes

as far as like Donatello having to wear You know

glasses like that are taped together in the middle.

Yeah looking like a dork And then the fact that

they all have to wear clothes to some degree.

Like I'm not saying that they can't have some

kind of like a specialized garb that they wear

kind of thing. But I don't think it's necessary

per se. And I think my biggest pet peeve is the

faces. I can't stand the fact that they have

human mouths, facial features and... The noses

and in everything else. It just it bothers me

to no end I I just I that's one thing and then

the shredder I'm curious to see how they make

that play out Yeah, especially with the armor

I don't have high hopes for it because it looks

like another one of those throwaway, you know

Oh, we're gonna kill him this episode But that

just I I have some expectations, but I'm not

going to hold my breath. Yeah. For me, you know,

honestly, what really got me excited for this

movie has nothing to do with any of the trailers.

But it has to do with one aspect of it. And that

is the musical score, because... My number one

favorite composer of the 21st century is Brian

Tyler who did Iron Man 3, Transformers Prime,

he's done a number of video games, he's doing

all four expendable movies. He is scoring the

music for this and I heard a little bit of a

snippet of whatever he's doing inside one of

these trailers. And I was like, OK, well, even

if I don't like the movie, at least I can get

a great Brian Tyler score out of it. So at least

the music is going to be good. One thing I don't

like is why do they why do the bandanas all look

like they're fucking do rags? Seriously, I was

not a fan of that. Yeah. That that's that's I

think that's probably the one of the second thing

that bothers me the most. It's the faces and

then the do rag. I was like, really? I mean,

Don't know the face is I'm kind of getting over

because I realize it's CG and they That's that's

one thing though that that they can disappoints

me that it's not and I know I don't know how

much more money it would be if they Instead of

doing all the CG stuff if they would actually

get actors in suits like the old films I don't

know how much more more money would be either

way, but it's just one of those things where

If they're gonna do CG, I'd rather have a lot

of a big screen silver screen animated film than

a live -action film. Mm -hmm. I don't know and

Okay, sure Megan Fox has a yellow jacket who

gives a rip a yellow jacket When I saw that they

cast her for that part, I got really nervous

that it was the movie was going to be all about

April and not about the turtles. Just kind of

like you could some people say they did with

with Transformers. It's all about the humans

more so than the robots. Like and I was like,

here it is again, Megan Fox. I'm kind of nervous,

so I don't know. We'll see what happens. Yeah,

I mean, absolutely. It's just one of those things

where I just don't know. I am I have some. excitement

for it and you know the the latest trailers are

you know they're they're pretty good I I is it

just me or they made shredder and super shredder

the same thing like it It seems to me that they've

made, and this is just based on the very short

segment of the trailer that I've seen, it seems

to me that they've incorporated where his armor

can expand exponentially without being crushed

by a dumpster. Right. Yeah, I saw it and it looks

awesome. I mean, I got to admit that was one

of the things that kind of excited me. I was

like, well, at least Shredder looks cool. But

yeah, it definitely does remind me of Super Shredder.

I guess that could be a good thing, but I just

hope he doesn't get crushed by a Doc again. That'd

be bad. Yeah, that'd be very bad. Yeah. All right.

But before she knew it, she fell in a trap and

got caught. Yeah, she was all alone with no friends

and no phone. Now this was beyond her worst dreams,

because she was cornered by some wayward teens.

Headed by Shredder, they were anything but good.

Misguided, unloved, they call them the foot.

They could terrorize and be angry youth. And

they mugged the people who needed proof. Then

from out of the dark came an awesome sound. Shouted

cowabunga as they hit the ground from the field.

When you stand for what you believe in and find

the strength to do what's right That's true is

the teacher so they are the students. Leonardo,

Michelangelo, and Donatello make up the team

of the group, transformed from the norm by the

nuclear group. Pizza's the food that's sure to

cheese. Back to the story, it's not hard to find.

Ninjas not just of the body, but of the mind.

Those were the words that the master instructed,

but a letter from Shredder had splinter abducted.

That was the last straw, spring into action.

Step on the foot, now they're gonna lose traction.

Now this is for real, so you fight for justice.
