CINEMA GEEKS
Most Anticipated Films of 2018

About this Episode
Hey, this is Steve Blum and you are listening
to the GeekCast Radio Network. Hello and welcome
to another episode of the Cinema Geeks. I am
one of your Cinema Geeks optimists solo and joining
me as usual today is Hard Candy Mandy. Oh, hey
bros. Bros? Movie revolt, Dan. Hello. Hello.
And Mr. Fridley Scent. Hello, Matt. Hi. We are
here today once again to look at the year that
is to come or that has already started that is
in full swing it seems like as we as we're speaking
here we're looking at our most anticipated films
of 2018 2018 today we already did our box office
predictions so now it's regardless of box office
what films are we just looking forward to if
you are a first -time listener of the cinema
geeks let us explain how this works if you've
listened to us previously it's going to work
exactly the same as it has in the last couple
years where we've done our most anticipated list
everybody basically submits to me a list of their
top you know 30 or so films that they're anticipating.
We compile them all together and we come out
with some films that everybody has in common
and we also come up with some films that are
unique to just one or two people. So this first
half of the record in the episode we're going
to be going over the films that were more unique
to just one or two people and then after the
break we will comment on our films that we all
had in common so those are films that were on
at least three or four people's most anticipated
list. It somehow always works out, I don't know
how it does this, but when we do this, for our
like most common, it always comes out to like
eight, nine, or ten films. So we had once again
ten films that were on at least three people's
list, so we will get over to those films after
the break. But we're gonna start by kind of getting
right into it, we'll go through our picks, bounce
back and forth, and then right at the end we
will kind of just talk about the year in general,
what we're looking forward to in broader strokes.
So, all right, let's start with Matt. Matt, what
was your number 10 unique film that you are looking
forward to? Oh, right. I've got The Grinch, which,
I mean, it's just they're doing The Grinch this
time. From the same people that did Minions Despicable
Me, I think, so. It's got Benedict Cumberbatch.
Benedict Cumberbatch, yes. See? You can do that.
Amanda, you're a Grinch fan, correct? Yeah, I've
liked every installment of the Grinch thus far,
and I'm not 100 % sure how I feel about the new
look. It's definitely more cutesy, but still
holds true to some of the original stuff looking
like his, like, you know, shape and all that,
so I think it should be good. How do you feel
about someone like Benedict Cumberbatch? Instead
of like obviously the we had Jim Carrey in live
-action and old -school Voices before that. What
do you think about Cumberbatch's ability to?
Infuse that character with some new life. I think
he can play like a good Bad guy, you know what
I mean with his his voice acting skills. I think
he could be a good bad dude He's supposed to
be In the new Jungle Book movie coming up with
his voice too, right? It's in a lot of movies
He's the batch Why'd you have to say it like
that, sir? Like, oh yeah, he's in a lot of movies,
so der. Just saying, he's got some voice acting
stuff coming up too, that's not just this, so
I think he could do well. Alright, so the Grinch
coming out, I believe, in the holiday season.
Amanda, what do you have as your number ten unique
pick? Dude, I just want to preface this with
saying I don't feel like what's been narrowed
down for my individual list really represents
my... This was your number 16 on your on your
overall list, so it's in your number 10 for your
unique films I just I don't know you don't understand
anyways I understand why sir so don't go there
all right, but I don't feel like it completely
represents What I'm super excited for but we'll
see we'll see here my number Ten I guess we're
gonna call it my number 16 on my actual list
is the nun Been waiting for a while to have the
scariest chick Her own film and it's an origin
story believe so it's gonna be intense. I'm terrified
of this chick I never want to see her pop up
in real life, so I'm gonna Make myself watch
this and hopefully I don't die of fright The
only question for her will be which friend besides
me that she's gonna go see that film with No,
the question is how many months after I watch
this am I gonna have to leave some light on while
we're sleeping? Dan any thoughts on the nun?
I know you had this one that you were considering
too for some box office success. Maybe Well,
I mean I know that the that's part of the like
Well, one of those movies the Conjuring universe
and they had what they had the Annabelle films
as well. So I Think they've done a pretty impressive
job of like building this like oddly Designed
like universe within their horror genre nuns
can be really scary and we have a ghost none
that that certainly adds it up a bunch so They've
taken like ideas that people thought wouldn't
work and they've ended up working So maybe that'll
be the same thing with the nun as well Alright,
so the nun as Amanda's number 10 the unique film
for mine I'm going to go with a film that I guess
technically has already been released. It was
a 2017 release in Japan. I believe it's been
already released somehow in the US, but I'm not
sure what form you would have to go to watch
it. I'm kind of on this kick, I guess, now that
we did the... Miyazaki Spotlight that I'm interested
in a few of these other anime films that are
coming out, and this is coming from... I'm going
to butcher this name, but Hiromasa Yonbayashi,
who was also involved with a lot of the Studio
Ghibli stuff, and this is Mary and the Witch's
Flower. Actually, since it's already been released,
it already has Rotten Tomatoes score and stuff
like that, so it's pretty well received so far.
And this is a story of a girl who comes across
with a flower that has the ability to turn her
into a witch for one night only. So, intriguing.
And I'm just interested to see what some of these
other anime films have to offer now that I'm
not... I'm past my, I guess, inauguration into
the anime world. So I'm interested to see what
this one has to offer. Amanda, you have to like
that plot. It snaps as a girl can turn into a
witch for a day. Yeah, I do that like every day.
Like every day. Dang. No, you don't. But a witch
with a B. I mean, it sounds interesting. I think
that if the animation and the story is done right,
I'll enjoy it. Matt, you're a better student
of Studio Ghibli and anime in general. What do
you think of Mary and the Witch's Flower? It
looks good. I'm super interested in it. If it
makes it to our theaters, I don't know if I'll
see it in theaters, but I'll definitely buy it
as soon as it hits DVD. All right. Dan, what's
your number 10 on your unique list? I'm actually
going to have to pull a little bit of an audible
because what was number 10 for me was a kid who
would be king, but it looks like that's actually
already been announced that we can push back
to 2019 because that's the effect I have on movies
apparently. Directed by Joe carnage who directed
attack the block and we've been long anticipating
the movie He would return to form with because
he hasn't done a movie since that film But looks
like that's actually been pushed back a year.
So I'm actually gonna go with a movie. I'm pretty
sure we'll be coming out this year. Definitely
because was Was debuted at TIFF and it's dark
river, which I'm assuming is unknown else's list
Not Red River, but Dark River. Yes, Dark River
is not an enthusiast. It's directed by Cleo Bernard.
When it comes to me in these most anticipated
movies list, I tend to follow creators, tend
to follow directors, and I like the director
in this situation. She directed The Arbor, which
was this really experimental documentary. but
also The Selfish Giant, which was one of my favorite
films, this coming of age film of kids living
in some, I think it was rural England, I forget
exactly the location, but it was quite good.
So this is about after her father dies, a young
woman returns to her Yorkshire village for the
first time in 15 years to claim the family farm
she believes is hers, which actually kind of
reminds me similar to a movie I liked last year.
well that had a similar idea so I'm hoping the
cast is pretty I mean the biggest name is Sean
Bean maybe it'll be a movie he doesn't die in
there's a good chance doesn't happen often actually
know what he's probably the father so that point
means he did die but I'm guessing I'm just throwing
that out there so but I'm really just hoping
like like I said I have really enjoyed the directors
of the two films so it seems like this is setting
as the selfish giant so I'm hoping that it will
be just Yeah, absolutely. Dark River I think
was kind of circulating in some people's list
last year as well as something that people were
anticipating. So definitely looking forward to
that one as well. Matt, what do you have in your
number nine slot? All right. My number nine is
a little bit weirder. It's a movie called Serenity
that I know nothing about. I know it's got Matthew
McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, McConaughey, and
that it's labeled as a sexy noir thriller drama.
Which is like all I know Like I can't find pictures.
I can't find nothing But I like all of those
words. So Especially when they're put together.
Yeah, like I just hope it is like a like a like
a noir thriller detective movie not like something
where it's like well, it's kind of dark and then
like like Right. Oh, I don't know man. I was
having trouble with these two Yeah, like I got
nothing about the setting. Uma Thurman's gonna
be in there. I got that. I was struggling. I
was struggling with these later picks. That one's
got an intriguing, like you said, you put all
those words together, kind of that noir mystery
type thing. Maybe McConaughey is kind of the
lead figure in that. That makes sense to me,
so I can dig that. Get this, like, Mortal Engines
comes out in like... 12 months, but they've got
a teaser They've got all this stuff like this
movie comes out in like six or seven and we got
nothing Interesting. Yeah, I haven't even really
heard much about it up until this point. So I'm
intrigued as well Amanda What do you have at
number nine? This movie's already out. It's been
out for a couple weeks, I think And I'm sad that
I haven't got to see it yet, but since you won't
see things like this with me, it puts a damper
on I have to rely on other people's schedules
to meet me to see these things. And that's Insidious,
the last key. Another horror flick here. Jumping
in the ranks. I'm excited for this. I think it
looks terrifying. Such a crazy concept when you
see that key going in people's throats and like...
Shutting them up. It's insane and these movies
terrify me beyond belief So I look forward to
seeing them But I'm also dreading the time after
the movie because I'm gonna be like a mess like
it took me so long to Get over the last installment
of insidious That this one is like it creeps
me out to my core so excited but terrified for
Insidious Alaski. Back -to -back horror picks.
Interesting. Alright, for my number nine, I actually
couldn't believe that this wasn't on your list,
Amanda, so I have to put this one on just because
of the recent films that these two stars have
been in, and they've been doing well, so I feel
like if you put them together that we should
have a good time at the theater. I'm going with
The Spy Who Dumped Me starring your girl. You
don't know who I'm talking about? Kate McKinnon.
I got a lot of girls. Your girl Kate McKinnon
and Mila Kunis. Starring up. So yeah, I thought
you I thought you're going uh, what's your name?
McCarty. Yeah, I thought it was like a sequel
to the spy movie that she did a few years ago.
Oh yeah, yeah. No, this one's starring Mila Kunis
and Kate McKinnon. Supposed to be released in
August. And also, the writer did a little bit
of work on SNL. I think he did an episode of
Mad Men and Mr. Robot. So, I don't know, it just
sounds like a completely bizarre premise. Obviously,
it has to deal with spies and espionage and stuff
like that, but I feel like... For some of the
different comedies that have come out in the
last two to three years, usually the bright spots
in those films have been Kate McKinnon or Mila
Kunis. So I feel like if you put them together,
maybe that will work. So I'm hoping for just
a general comedy that works for me. So that's
why I have The Spy Who Dumped Me at number nine.
I feel like Kate McKinnon is over the top in
her movies, like over the top. And Mila Kunis
is more like... I don't know her humor is much
different. So what you're saying is that Kate
McKinnon is like Mel Gibson and Mila Kunis is
gonna play the Danny Glover part Sure, I don't
know. I'm trying to do a TFG one reference there
Alright, so the spy who dumped me at in the number
nine spot for me Dan. What do you got? My next
is where where'd you go Bernadette Bernadette
I should say cuz that's the right title and again,
it's because of I enjoyed the director Richard
Linklater before trilogy boyhood I didn't love
he came out last year with a last flag flying
which I didn't love I enjoyed it well enough
but it was somewhat disappointing but also really
strong cast with Cate Blanchett you know amazing
actress To seeing them work together and apparently
it's based upon a really well regarded book Which
is different from the link later because most
of the stuff that I've really enjoyed it There
has been his own creation, but it's about when
an architect turned reculant loose Bernadette
Fox goes missing Prior to a family trip to Antarctica
her 15 year old daughter B goes on a quiet crest
With brunette's husband to find her so it's little
you know link later is not known for a movie
typically like this he's done a lot of different
things but in most of his like genre Bend films
are ones that exist in some sort of genre haven't
done that Well, I'm thinking of like the Newton
boys, which isn't been good, but he's a much
better director now than he was then so there's
some concern there, but Like I said, strong cast,
great director, so my bigger concern is that
it doesn't come out this year, because I think
every time I've had a link letter film on my
most anticipated, it ended up coming out the
year after, except for last year, and then it
finally ended up coming out the right year. Yeah,
this is one I was considering too just because
of obviously the Linklater connection and it
seemed like a somewhat intriguing plot but I
just couldn't convince myself if it was the right
pairing or the right matchup and if it was gonna
work like you said with some of his past stuff
that hasn't that has been more of that type of
yoke so I wasn't quite sure so they just missed
out on being on my list. Matt what do you have
at your number eight? The next movie I got on
my list is Bohemian Rhapsody like Queen is probably
my favorite band of all time. I've got Most of
their albums. They have a lot um Like and I wanted
that Sasha Baron Cohen one so much more than
the one that we're gonna get this year Like so
much more, but I'm still Excited because it's
it's gonna be interesting and hopefully with
the you know director change and stuff It's not
gonna be just totally ruined Yeah, Christmas
release actually right on Christmas Day. I'm
intrigued too because it is an interesting figure
obviously with the lead singer there of Queen
and Yeah, some changes as far as the casting
directing that type of stuff goes But I think
they got they had enough time to hopefully make
it right. I'm intrigued too That was one that's
a probably in my top 30 or 40 as well Amanda
number whatever we're on Number eight. Yes. It's
this is the my number 13 timeout before you say
that this will also be the first one That's on
two people's lists. So just FYI for that. Okay,
but you had it you had it ranked higher That's
why you get to talk about it. This is on my this
is number 13 on my full list and That is a wrinkle
in time. I don't have any Ties to the original
property and never read the book. It's a kid's
book, right? So I have no idea what the story
is. I have no idea, except for what I'm getting
from this trailer. But I think that the visuals
look super, super cool. And it's going to be
a fun ride. Matt, you also had this in your top
30. Any thoughts on Wrinkle in Time? Yeah. So
I first heard about it well before the trailer
came out. I guess. Steven Universe is based in
part on the book and that's one of my favorite
TV shows. So like I had heard about it online
I actually have a copy of the book that I got
Amy for Christmas that she hasn't finished reading
but after if she does I hope to read it and If
you know we're quick enough, maybe we can get
it passed on to you nice nice so wrinkle in time
getting double love there my number eight is
right up my alley and actually somewhat interesting
timing because we just saw an artifact about
this specific event in history when we were in
dc this last year my number eight is called the
catcher was a spy and this is the real life story
of a former Major League Baseball catcher named
Mo Berg, who then became a spy for the United
States and went undercover after, I believe around
World War II time. And it just premiered last
month at Sundance. It has got an interesting
cast here. We have Paul Rudd, Guy Pearce, Paul
Giamatti, Jeff Daniels, Mark Strong, Tom Wilkinson,
Sienna Miller and Connie Nielsen. So that is
a lot of quality people. Also coming from the
writer who did Saving Private Ryan. So I'm just
hoping there's, you know, it did the Sundance
premiere. Hopefully that means it's coming out,
you know, wider release sometime later this year.
But I love baseball and I love history and spy
stuff. And we were just at the Spy Museum and
saw some of the things about this individual,
you know, and his life amongst some other people
as well. So I think it's just something that
is very intriguing to me. Amanda, what do you
think about? The catcher was a spy. I think it's
crazy that we just learned about this guy and
now there's a movie coming out about him. So
it'd be interesting. Yeah, so that is my number
eight. Dan, any thoughts on that one or what
is your number eight? Well, I actually have not
heard about that. So that sounds interesting.
I mean, Paul wrote in that, which is. Yeah, and
he's playing the main part. Yeah. So what if
it's comedic or if it's straightforward? So that's
interesting. If it's like, you know, like. Like
fish out of water situation or if they're taking
it straight, that's that's pretty cool. I will
definitely look out Also, it feels like it's
a year year of really weird titles. Everything's
really long Like my next one is if Belle Street
could talk. It's like why whatever happened to
one more title since I kind of thing anymore
That one title it was like when a bird a bird
sitting on a bench kind of Pigeon sitting in
the park. I forget contemplating reality or something
like that. I don't know But if Belle Street could
talk is directed by Barry Jenkins who? Obviously
Jeff directed Moonlight, which one Becks picture
I think unless they change it again So it's just
follow -up film to that So that's mainly why
I'm looking forward to it Cast wise nothing really
super Jumps out and Regina King and Dave Franco
are the biggest names on the cast list, but It's
a kind of a situation where it's one of the stories
where someone's Committed arrested for a crime
they didn't commit and we've seen a lot of movies
actually like this recently Crown Heights last
year was my film I really liked but I'm wondering
like with a director like Barry Jenkins what
he can do with a story like this. So I'm looking
forward to seeing it So I mean it's tough when
you're following up with me like Moonlight you
have all this pressure you've seen a lot of directors
who debut or have a really big huge hit that
comes out of nowhere and then their follow -up
film just doesn't doesn't live up to it, so hopefully
that doesn't happen but But you know, there's
always that that's my only concern really with
this because there's nothing out at this moment
yet regarding trailers or there's no even No
poster or anything like that. So yeah, this one
would be in my top 50 as well Just didn't quite
make my cut for this list, but definitely intrigued
by this one as well. Matt. What is your number
seven? What I got here on my list apparently
is this movie called Sherlock gnomes. I like
it. Let's get more love Like I've got no hate
for this. I love I love the Sherlock Holmes.
I like a good mystery I like that. It's gone
into public domain recently enough that we're
just going to get a flood of movies like every
year now apparently I didn't see no Mio and Juliet
I don't I hope I don't have to have seen that
one in order to get this one Because I don't
know if they're related at all except for the
gnome aspect. I don't know how to say about this
It's got a million actors in it that are I mean
like no named actors Like from, you know, McAvoy
all the way to Ozzy Osbourne, apparently. Like,
I don't know. Why not have some fun, guys? Yeah,
and go out and see this and spend your money
on it. Because I think this is on my draft team.
I could be wrong. I can't remember. It was only
a week ago, but I've already forgotten. Amanda,
your number seven also is on two people's lists,
so go ahead and give it to us. This is number
11 on my true list, and... Something I avoided
watching for a while and now I'm like, dude,
there's another one. We're excited. It's Wreck
-It Ralph 2. By the way, by the end of this,
Matt's gonna not like you very much because almost
every single one of your picks is on Matt's list,
but you had it ranked higher. I did not do this,
Matt. I did not do this. Oh, that's fine. That
just means you got good taste. Exactly. So what
about Wreck -It Ralph 2 has you intrigued? I
know that's not the official title either. Wreck
-It Ralph 2 is going to break the internet. I
think that's what he does. He breaks the internet.
I thought it was a really, really cute movie.
I don't know why it took me forever to watch
it. But I did, and they loved it. Ralph has such
a big heart. I love all the little cameos from
other games and stuff. I'm excited to see what
it's going to be when they pull out the stops.
Matt, any comments on Wreck -It Ralph? Hey, I
saw the original Wreck -It Ralph, like, it was
a friend's, like, my friend was having a, well,
no, my friend, it was my friend's birthday, and
I was like, we should do something, and I was
like, I don't know what's in theaters, and it's
like, Wreck -It Ralph looks fun, and I was like,
all right, I guess, and then, like, I fucking
loved that movie, like, I bought action figures
after I left, like, we went from the theater
to Walmart, so, like, I'm super down for any
sequel, like, it's, I'm already bought in. Dan,
is this one of the top anticipated animated films
that we're going to get this year? I think so.
I think looking at the fact that Disney has actually
been having a really great streak as of late
when it comes to their animated films from Frozen,
Zootopia, Moana, Wreck -It Ralph, Tangle, they've
been kind of hitting it. That they've been actually
more consistent than Pixar really For the most
part so I didn't I enjoyed the first record wrap
I didn't love it love it, but I did like it and
I'm looking forward to the sequel as well And
it's probably gonna make tons of yeah Apparently
the Disney princesses are gonna be in it like
that's some of the footage that came out during
the Disney Summit Or whatever they call it last
last month So, you know, they were gonna take
that and then mooch off the fact that they're
gonna have like Elsa and you know combining Video
games with with the the power of Disney princesses
is gonna be like I really probably should have
dropped it that higher Did you show Connor record
Ralph has he seen the first one? No, I don't
own it. So we've not watched that one yet. So
I'll be cute to see Alright, so for my next pick
my number seven on the unique list Number 12
on my overall list. I'm probably the only one
that would have this on their list, but I don't
know. You're a lot of weird shit already. I'm
so intrigued by this one. So this is an August
17th release from director Brian Henson. We're
going with the Happy Time Murders. Let me just
read this genre description. Neo -noir puppet
comedy thriller. Neo -noir puppet comedy thriller
starring... One and only, Amanda. I'm surprised
this didn't make your list. Melissa McCarthy
and the Muppets. So I just have to read the synopsis
somewhat quickly. So, in a world where puppets
coexist with humans as second -class citizens,
Puppet Private Eye and disgraced ex -cop, Phil
Phillips is hot on the trail of the serial killer
who murdered his brother and is now targeting
the cast members of the famous 80s television
series, The Happy Time Gang. I just felt like
it was so for the sad and depressing. I really
couldn't... It's gonna be a comedy as well. I
don't know what... This sounds like it can be
a complete mess, but I'm so intrigued. It sounds
like Roger Rabbit with puppets. Yes. I'm hoping
for that. Yeah. Give me another version of a
Roger Rabbit type story and I'm down. I don't
know. It's the Henson Muppet family and it's
a neo -noir thriller. Dan, am I crazy for looking
forward to this? No, it's number 33 on my list.
It looks different coming from the Henson line
and maybe a little bit of a more adultish tone
for the Muppets, or going back to what they were
like when they first came out. I think it could
be great. I know it's actually been in development
forever. Apparently there were some issues with
it, but hopefully now that it's been squared
away, it can be actually quite good. I think
it could be a surprise hit, or at least be like
... You know, I can see it being a movie that
people get behind the champion. I mean, if she
comes out in the beginning of the movie on a
flaming phoenix and starts dancing to a T -Pain
song, I might lose my mind in the theater. You
already did that once. So it's slated for an
August release. Matt, what do you think of this
interesting addition to the Muppet family? What
is this called? The Happy Time Murders. I don't
think this registered on my radar until you started
talking, and I was like, this sounds awesome.
I definitely need to see some production photos
or some trailers. I don't know if it's going
to be enough to get me to the theaters, but I
like the concept. I know there's at least a picture
of the spy, the Muppet Detective that is leading
this whole thing. online so I've seen that I
don't know if there's much else besides that
but I'm definitely intrigued. Dan what's your
number seven? Oh finally an easy title First
Man directed by Damien Chazelle who did Lava
Land. Weird that like him and Barry Jenkins are
having movies again coming out that are competing
each other. I don't know either of them will
be off a backs picture but starring Ryan Gosling
as Neil Armstrong. Biopics are tricky. You can,
you know, it's hard to make a great biopic, but
sometimes it can happen. I also, I just really
love the Apollo history. And so I'm really, that's
kind of really what has me excited. You know,
I love the Apollo 13. Obviously this is a lot
different because this isn't a thriller. It's
more of a drama, I would assume. So, but I think,
you know, Ryan Gosling in a role like that could
be, it could be, a good opportunity for him to
do something more in the dramatic side. He's
obviously done that in the past, but I feel like
he's kind of been playing a lot of similar roles.
Playing someone else or playing a person like
this, I think will be a big piece for him, and
it could be one of those. The Academy loves that
type of stuff, so that could be a potential Oscar
-nominated role if he can knock it out. First
man, it could be dry. dull, but I feel like with
Damien Chazelle looking what he did with All
All In, he'll be able to put some life into it.
So yeah, it's listed as a drama right now, slated
for an October release. Also starring Jason Clarke,
but yeah, this was on my list as well. So this
is another double pick. This was number 17 for
me. So definitely looking forward to seeing what
Damien Chazelle does with something of this nature,
a little bit different than what he's tackled
so far. So yeah, definitely intrigued. Matt,
what is your number six? I got next up is the
nutcracker and the four realms I I'm not sure
I was aware that it was live -action and not
CG but the trailers make it look like it's got
it's got a little bit of Narnia and a little
bit of Like the actual you know the nutcracker
like it's really weird and and dark but like
fun and fantastical So like it looks interesting
to me Amanda you said you look like the look
of it, too. Yeah, I'm not really sure why this
isn't on my list, but it looks really good I
saw previews for it in the theater, and I get
excited now every time this pops up. It's it
looks really dope It's like just scary enough
But the story is super interesting itself like
the nutcracker story, so I'm interested so Amanda
Why don't you go ahead and read off the next
film that's on your in my list? Oh, okay. My
number 6 is number 10 on my true list, and that's
Ocean's 8. SEND IT BE! That's all I gotta say.
Alright, Matt, any comments on Ocean's 8? No,
like, it's one of the coolest looking heist movies
that we're gonna get this year, and you know
I love a heist movie. Alright, so both of you
not needing too much verbiage to express why
you're interested in Ocean's 8 Sandra Bullock
and the cool -looking heist movie. That's all
you need for that. You know the franchise, so
that works for that. Number six for me, I'm going
with a film called, and there's a chance that
this one is actually not released in 2018, so
I'll play the card that Dan sometimes has to
play and talk about a film that we'll probably
talk about next year too, but this is Bad Times
at the El Royale. Directed by Drew Goddard who
most recently did The Martian or wrote for The
Martian at least. This starring Chris Hemsworth,
Jeff Bridges, Russell Crowe, Dakota Johnson.
He wrote Martian, World War Z, Cloverfield. He
directed A Cabin in the Woods. It's about a bunch
of shady characters that collide with each other.
So I like the title. I like the people involved.
I like the premise and I like the director. So
that's enough for me to put bad times at the
El Royale at Number six damn Nice. Nice. My next
one's actually a little break for me because
it's not based upon a director But it's based
upon the fact that I really enjoy the original
property that it's based on and that is I kill
giant Which is a story about this fifth grade
girl at least in the comics, I don't know if
they're gonna age her up in the movie, that kind
of escapes in this fantasy world for reasons
that I'm certain the movie will get into. But
it was one of the best comics of the late, 2008
-ish it came out and was around for a few years.
It's actually complete now. It's a really great
story. But it's this young girl who gets into
this fantasy land, similar to Narnia or Brichoterapytheia.
where you're not sure what's all real, what's
make believe or what have you. And it's just
kind of that great juxtaposition of this kind
of girl taking power in her life. The cast, I
don't really know very well. The director, seems
like this is the first time the director really
did anything of this nature. The biggest name
cast wise is probably Zoe Saldana. So I'm guessing,
not sure what role she'll be playing. I think
it could be good. I did debut in TIFF last year
and I didn't hear much about it at all. I don't
tend to take reviews that happen in festivals,
all that. I take it with a grain of salt because
I feel like that's not the best environment to
watch movies, watching six movies in a day and
then trying to crank out reviews for them. I
feel like that tends to lead to a lot of movies
getting missed. or something that doesn't have
the build up to be kind of underappreciated.
So I could see that happening with I Kill Giants
and it ended up being a lot better than the reception
it got at TIFF. But I'm looking forward to it.
I'm hoping it can get people to kind of see that
there are other things outside the world of superheroes
when it comes to comics and get people interested
in more additional comics. nice nice yeah i hadn't
heard much about that one yes it was a kind of
one that was off of my radar but i'll be intrigued
to see that as well matt your next one is actually
a shared one for you too so you have this one
and so does dan so what is your number five my
number five is spider -man into the spider -verse
dan actually mentioned it on our the other one
the money ones yeah Like, it looks real good
from the teasers we've been getting in theaters
and who doesn't love Spider -Man and the various
other Spider -Men. Dan, what was your thought
process? It's going to be great to see Miles
Morales in the main character, which is something
that a lot of people have been hoping for. A
dimension -jumping film could be really interesting
in the fact that it's animated on this level.
There's a lot of the direct -to -DVD animated
films, but hopefully one that has a full budget
behind it could look great. We've been hoping
for this for some time. But it might be kind
of weird for a lot of people because why is there
another Spider -Man? I think it could be hard
to market to some people, but I think it could
end up being one of the better Spider -Man movies
we've gotten if done right. My number five is
my number nine on my true list and that is Pacific
Rim Uprising. I really enjoyed the first one
and As much crap as Charlie Hunnam gets like
I liked him in it. I think that Idris Elba was
pretty cool I like the fighting. I like the team
up style that they do I think it's really awesome
seeing like the Kaiju's and like all the stuff
that you know Like society and like their culture
deals with now like with the existence of kaiju
and I think it is awesome that we're getting
another one Another generation Um, and I think
it's gonna be a pretty fun big huge bombastic
Uh entertaining ride matt this was also in your
not in your top 20 any thoughts? Uh, I thought
that the first one was good and I like giant
robots like um Yeah, I don't know like I I I
didn't I didn't see the first one in theaters.
I saw it much later. And then even later than
that, I've heard that there's a lot of hate for
it among groups. There's a person that I love
as a Star Wars podcaster who cannot stand this
film and slags it all the time and I don't get
it. I'm real excited for the second one and I
think I'm going to see it someday. All right.
My number five for me is an August 17th science
fiction film called Captive State. Directed by
Rupert Wyatt who most recently did Rise of the
Planet of the Apes starring John Goodman in a
movie set in Chicago that is after an extraterrestrial
occupation I Mean it reminds you of that in a
way so so a good director John Goodman science
fiction captive state I have to be intrigued
by this one If you can give me as many roles
as you want with John Goodman in a serious post
-apocalyptic or science fiction setting I'm down
so have to stay This is also gonna be we get
the trailer and it it's like on our phone. Actually.
It's like you watch it It's like you already
own it like Wow, this is just this is just the
one off the Cloverfield Hopefully not. Hopefully
it can be a little bit more Not as disappointed
as this last chapter of Cloverfield I think was
for a lot of people so Dan you're up for your
number five pick. Oh, and my next one's a combination
of the fact that I like the original property
It's based on and also the people involved and
it's that the death of Stalin Which was on my
list last year, but didn't come out of course
because that's usually what happens But I actually
read the comic last year that this is based on
it's a Russian comic that was translated for
the first time in English last year was really
great. It's just it's it is about um the death
of joseph stalin in kind of the the um you know
political goings -on that happened after that.
If people are trying to grab power, it's kind
of a darkly humorous take on it. It's directed
by people who brought us great things like VEEP
and In the Loop, and has a pretty impressive
cast, T. Prashemi, Jeffrey Tambor, I think some
of those. Oh. Trying to think of who else is
it Michael Pena? No, no, no, but there's it's
a it's a like basically in that type of comedic
stylings there's a lot of those type of People
who have been in in the loop and beeper who are
gonna make an appearance and I'm really excited
to see you how they take on this story I think
it's going to be, hopefully, a really great comedy
because we were in desperate need of those. This
was also, I think, debuted last year in festivals
and actually got a pretty high praise. So that
has me hoping that it will come out this year
and also be really good. Yeah, absolutely. I
remember this being on your list last year. You
said Steve Buscemi, Jeffrey Tambor, Jason Isaacs.
among some other people, so definitely one that's
getting a lot of attention as well. Matt, what
is your number four pick? My number four is there's
a Robin Hood movie happening. Like, so quick
after that, a King Arthur movie didn't make any
money. I can't wait. Like, and this one's got,
you know, Taron Anderson, Jamie Foxx has got
Mendo in it. Like, I'll go see this one in theaters
by myself on a Saturday morning. Like, whatever.
I'll enjoy my fantasy movies that no one else
wants to see. I just rewatched King Arthur, or
we just rewatched King Arthur. And I like that
movie. This is my number 35 on my true list,
so it's on my radar. I'll see it. You don't have
to go see it alone, Matt. We'll see it with you.
Hey, I'd like that. All right, Amanda, guess
what? What? Your next pick is also on somebody's
list, but it's not Matt. It's me. So go ahead
and reveal your number four pick. Oh, OK. Well,
this is my... Number seven. I don't feel like
I circled the right thing here. Is it this? No.
What? Technical difficulties. It's this? I can't
see. It's Sicario. Yes. I'll help you out there.
Her list is getting confusing over here. It's
my number seven on my... Shut up, okay? It's
on my true list and when I saw Benicio Del Toro
do like Like the rapid bump fire thing. I'm like
I do that in like the shooter games at arcades
To like make it like an automatic one of them.
I'm like I do that I do that but not to people
Not to people The first movie was so chilling
and crazy with all the twists and the espionage
and the, you know, whatever else. It was great.
I liked it. It was dark and this movie is going
to get us back into this world where you can
see Benicio Del Toro just be a BAMF. And Mr.
Brolin. And Brolin. This is number 15 on my list,
so definitely highly anticipated as well. The
first one was great, so I'm interested to see
what else they do in this world. I wasn't expecting,
you know, when they first, when they did the
first one to have a sequel, but we're getting
it, so I will take part and watch that one. Dan,
was Sicario anywhere on your, I know it was in
your top 30, but was it in your top 50 or so?
Yeah, I forget where but it's it's in it's number
48 on my list I just I'm just a little concerned
with it not being the same director So that's
like doing that as not any higher on my list
Alright, for my number four, Dan that's also
on your list, just slightly higher on mine, and
that will be the film Mute, which I believe was
on my list last year as well. So I've been anticipating
it for a couple years, but this is the new film
from Duncan Jones, who did Moon and Source Code,
and stars Paul Rudd and Mr. Scarsgard. We have
a mute bartender. Wait, which Scarsgard? There's
a lot of Scarsgards. Alexander. Alexander. I
believe and it's a new bartender and a little
mystery. He's trying to figure some stuff out
and seems a little bit Not a lot of details about
it, but it's Duncan Jones and I'm interested
in it. So mute is my number seven overall That's
what you get when you're on a list two years
in a row. Dan. What are you thinking? Yeah, similar.
You know, I love moon and What is the other film
we did with Jake Dillon? They go source code,
which is I think really underrated Obviously
Warcraft had its problems, but I Love the trailer
and even I think it could be, you know, hopefully
a big hit for for Netflix which is weird that
it's gonna be on Netflix. I think when When we
when this was first announced or we first had
an anticipated film, you know, you thought it'd
be a theater film But it's not the case. So hopefully
we'll get it this year because I know it's done.
It's made We're just waiting for it to be released.
So Alright, so Dan, what is your number four?
My number four is Roma from Alfonso Coran who
has been doing some amazing films as of late
obviously with Gravity Not Too Far Ago and Children
of Men. This seems to be a movie though that's
kind of delving back to more his dramatic roots
where it's about the year in the life of a middle
-class family in Mexico City in the 70s. So,
you know, not gonna have the spectacle of something
like gravity or children or men, I would assume.
You never know with how many you might be able
to. but it seems like it'll kind of get back
to more of like the Y2, I forget how to say that
name of his more dramatic film movies, but he's
done those and been successful with it. The cast
is, I think they're Mexican actors and I'm not
well aware of them, but hopefully, I'm curious
to see what he can do in kind of a change of
pace. Yeah, absolutely definitely a director
that has a lot of people intrigued whenever he
comes out with a film so into our Top three Matt
you can start it off in a rare crossover with
me. So this film is bond both of our less So
what's your number three? Cool. My number three
is Holmes and Watson Like I teased earlier the
Sherlock Holmes is hitting hard this year I'm
not gonna lie, I think I would rather have a
Robert Downey Jr. than the two that we're gonna
get this year, but a Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly.
and Lauren Lapkus, who I love, doing a comedy
take on the Sherlock Holmes story. Like, who
isn't excited for it, you know? Yeah, and also
from the director that did Tropic Thunder and
Men in Black 3, also starring Ray Fiennes, along
with, like you said - Hugh Laurie. Yeah, so a
lot of interesting people there. I think, again,
I'm hoping that this year is like maybe a resurgence
in some just straight comedies, because we've
been lacking in good quality. straight comedies.
So I'm hoping that's what we kind of get here
in this Holmes and Watson framing. So definitely
with you on that one. It was number 16 on my
overall list as well. Amanda, your number three
crossover with Matt. This is my number five on
my true list and it is Venom. Tom Hardy getting
taken over by some black symbiote goo stuff in
case you didn't know. Some heart -hitting breakdown
on the ins and outs of Venom from Amanda. I watched
the trailer. It looks cool. I know we've been
waiting for this movie for a while, but I think
that Tom Hardy just does wonders with whatever
role he's given, so I'm excited. Matt, thoughts
on Venom? Oh man, I saw the trailer, or at least
the teaser, before Black Panther on this movie,
and I think I'm a little less enthused about
it, but like... I've got my I mean I'm gonna
hold my breath until it comes out like I Liked
I've liked almost every spider -man movie we've
gotten so just one more in that spider -verse
Why not? All right, so my number three is also
on somebody's list and that would be ready player
one Obviously from Mr. Spielberg dealing with
some nostalgia, the adaptation of the book, that's
enough for me. I haven't seen anything on it
really too much as far as images or trailers,
teasers, anything like that. I don't even know
if there's anything out. Ready Player One? Yeah.
We've seen it like a thousand times in the theater,
derf. Just like the little clip that they show
anything I haven't seen like any of the extended
looks or anything like that on anything If I
have seen them I probably not paid attention.
I haven't been paying too much attention to a
lot of these I'm starting to remember it, but
nostalgia and Spielberg is enough for me Amanda
you had this one on your list too So what do
you think far as far as ready player one? I think
it looks awesome I don't know why I didn't know
about this before I started seeing these trailers
I have not read the book. There's like so much
stuff that I'm like why don't I read this book?
So now I feel like I need to read stuff and see
this. But I don't know, the only thing I'm worried
about is the CG. Like how is it gonna hold up?
It looks like they're throwing so many characters
at you at once and like some fast -paced moving
stuff that I wonder if it's gonna be all the
boneless movements and stuff like that. But I
think that super cool concept. And from what
I've seen so far, it does look pretty good. All
right, so Ready Player One, a little bit of double
-dose love there. Dan, what is your number three?
My number three is Widows by Steve McQueen, who
this last big film that he did was 12 Years a
Slave, and he's done Hunger and Shame as well.
This is about, you know, it's four women who
basically were married to the same man, and he,
his... His past has caused him a lot of issues,
but it's also a really strong cast Viola Davis,
Michelle Rodriguez, Liam Neeson, Kellen Farrow,
John Berenthal, Robert Duvall, Jackie Weaver.
It's pretty insane and I've really enjoyed or
been impressed by all Steve McQueen's movies.
I didn't love... Shame, but I thought you know
there was things about it to be impressed by
so I'm really curious to see and I feel like
it's also a movie that's kind of coming out at
a good time considering it as a you know a film
that is Starring four really long regatta well
known and strong actresses, which is not typically
something you see So I'm looking forward to it,
and you know I love 12 years a slave and thought
you know it's one of the best movies of this
decade and I'll have to live up to, but I feel
like considering who he's working with, he has
the opportunity to do that. Yeah, that one just
missed my list, but it did not miss Matt's list.
Matt, this was number 11 on your list. Any thoughts?
Yeah, dude. I remember hearing about this like,
I don't know, like six months ago and being excited.
The premise sounds amazing. I can't wait to see
it. I think this is my favorite looking heist
movie of the year. I can't wait to see it. Nice,
nice. All right, Matt, what is your number two?
Guess what? You get to pull the rug out from
Amanda for the first time. So this is a crossover
that you had higher. So what's your number two?
My number two is X -Men Dark Phoenix. I felt
like I had this one low on my list. I mean, barely
in my tens. I mean, the X -Men movies have all
been great. Yes, more. Amanda? Why did X -Men
make it in your top 30? I have it pretty low,
too. I have it at 25. But I love the Phoenix.
I love her character. She was so cool in, like,
the 90s cartoon. I liked the glimpse that we
got from Sam Stark playing Jean Grey in Apocalypse.
So I'm really excited to see more of the Phoenix.
All right. You can do the same thing to Matt
now and then pick one that he had. So what's
your number two? my number two this this isn't
on anybody else's list matt well matt of course
because we have awesome tastes and that's aquaman
is my number two it's my number three and my
true list so not too far off but uh jason mamoa
just coming with the shirt off and the hair and
stuff. I think Matt might have a different reason,
I don't know. I really liked the underwater scene
that we got all three seconds of it in Justice
League and if we're getting some more cool underwater
battle scenes like that's gonna be awesome. Matt?
I mean, you saw Jason Momoa with his shirt off,
right? Like, he's definitely the best -looking
of the Justice League, if we're doing just on
physical appearance of the guys. But, like, I
mean, if we want to just sexualize it, the mirror
costume also looks very sexy. Like, here's the
thing. I want something good by Aquaman. This
is something I've craved since, I don't know,
maybe 10. Ever since I found out it was real
cool to hate on Aquaman, I've wanted there to
be a good Aquaman. I've subscribed to Aquaman
Comics. I've got a bunch of Aquaman trades. I
spent a lot of money on Aquaman, and most of
it's very lackluster. I don't know if I like
him ironically or not. I want something good
with Aquaman in it. All right, so Aquaman. Looking
forward to it there. My number two is not on
anybody else's list and that is Alita Battle
Angel Coming out in the Christmas season James
Cameron has his hand in this a little bit, but
the director is Robert Rodriguez from Sin City
starring Jackie Earl Haley Christoph Waltz Jennifer
Connelly I'm gonna say it wrong. Mahershala Ali.
Mahershala. Yeah, all those people. He's one
person. I meant all the people I named. But I've
seen the little teaser or whatever that's out
for this one. It's one of the rare teaser trailers
I've seen so far and it was very intriguing to
me. I love science fiction and I am down for
Alita Battle Angel. I'm intrigued to see what
else there is for this and I don't know anything
about the property or anything like that. I know
it's a series of manga books or whatever. but
I've never read any of them. Matt, are you familiar
with the content at all? Not especially, but
I have a friend who is who said he's very displeased
with the trailer. I don't know. I'm not gonna
talk bad about it. I don't know it. Fair enough,
fair enough. Dan, your number two was also on
my list only one spot away, so you had this number
five overall. I had it number six overall, so
go ahead. Wow, yeah, it is a hold the dark by
Jeremy Jeremy Sun yay, who you know he did Blue
is warmest color which was in my top ten and
also green room, which was also my top ten So
hopefully you can go three for three. I love
the idea It's basically this kid who is taken
by a pack of wolves so they get an expert hunter
that kind of track them down and I'm just really
excited to see I don't know when like time period
it's taking place in, but again, a really strong
cast. Jeffrey Wright, who's an underrated actor.
Alexander Starzard, who apparently is in everything
now. But I just love everything Sonia's done
doing even, you know, Malcolm Blair, who's done
other films with with with him, who did, who
directed Ennelfil last year. They just seem to
have something really special going. So So that's
got me excited, you know. I feel like these movies
are getting better and better. Yeah, absolutely.
So I mean, ditto. Everything Dan just said, that's
why I'm interested in as well. Hold the Dark
is definitely on my list. I don't think it has
a specific release date yet unless it's just
come out recently. So hopefully that one is something
we get here in 2018. All right. Time for everybody's
number one on their unique list, starting with
you, Matt. What do you have? I got Mortal Engines.
I'm surprised this wasn't on... a bunch of people's
lists because they've been showing it ahead of
every movie I've seen for the last four months.
It's been mostly Star Wars. I've seen Star Wars
a bunch of times and it's always before that
one. Come to think of it, I love... Steampunk
like I've read I don't know half dozen dozen
steampunk books like I love that concept And
this one I haven't read it, but I mean it's coming
out in December I don't know why we're still
showing trailers for it So I'll have plenty of
time to read the book before it comes out if
I so desire like it looks good I don't know Absolutely
Peter Jackson a little bit having his fingers
in there interesting concept. I had this in my
somewhere in my top 40 or 50. I just didn't quite
make my top 30, so that's why it wasn't on a
shared list. Amanda, you're the only one with
this one at your number one. What do you got?
My number one is my number two. Shocking? On
my true list, and that is Fantastic Beasts 2.
A lot of twos on your list, somehow it turned
out. I like some stuff showing. I've heard some
bad stuff about Jude Law being cast as Dumbledore
and yada yada, but I really, really liked the
look and the feel of the first Fantastic Beasts.
You're getting back into this magical world in
a different place, in a different time, and it's
still so enchanting. I love it. This has got
high stakes and really awesome, cool characters
and the visuals are great. I'm just excited.
Might be intriguing, too, to see even more tie
-ins with the original set of movies here as
we get a little bit further on. So Fantastic
Beasts 2. I don't know if that's the official
title, but that's what we'll call it. All right.
My number one, I guess, Dan, I'm going to have
to call. Why are you skipping Matt? Matt is already
gone. Pay attention. Is this number one? Mortal
Engines. Remember that? I've been first every
round. I'm just looking out for Matt, alright?
Yeah, I mean you should because you guys had
a lot in common there. My number one, I think,
Dan, that we have to call an audible. It's on
both of our lists, but it's now listed as a 2019
release. And my number one would have been The
Irishman from Martin Scorsese, obviously the
mobster film with De Niro, Pacino, Pesci. Bobby
Cannavale, Harvey Keitel, Jesse Plemons, Ray
Romano, and a bunch of other people, but currently
listed as 2019. So I will throw in something
that was not going to get talked about that was
on two people's list. And let's just say I'll
throw Dragged Across Concrete in here, which
is the next film from S. Craig Zoller, who did
Bone Tomahawk and brawl in Cell Block 99. OK,
so when I heard True Moments, I was listening
to that episode and I think Barry brought it
up and I thought they were talking about the
one scene in Brawl and Cell Block 99 or whatever
when that guy's face gets Scramped across the
freaking concrete. No a new movie from that same
director starring Mel Gibson Vince Vaughn and
the great Don Johnson so Supposed to be out in
2018 Dan. This was also on your list any thoughts
on dragged across concrete yeah, I mean I I enjoyed
brawn cell block 90. I forget the name of it
already and Bone Tomahawk as well. It has like,
you know a name that you'd feel like you would
see in like a 60s 70s Grindhouse movie Mel Gibson's
gonna be in it with Vince on as well So I don't
know. I think it's gonna it could be brutal and
in the best ways possible. So Absolutely. Another
film that is on both Dan and my list would be,
Dan, your number one on your unique list. What
was it? My number one on my unique list is Outlaw
King, directed by Dave McKenzie, who directed
Hello, Hollywooder, Start Up, which was my favorite
movie of that year. Hello, Hollywooder, which
was in my top 10 of that year, which is a movie
I think I love more and more every time I watch
it. It's interesting. This is a very different
film for David Mackenzie in the fact. It's a
period drama That is actually telling the Braveheart
story, but in a different perspective Starring
some of the people who've worked with previously
like Aaron Taylor or Johnson and Chris Pine.
I'm a little worried about Chris Pine doing an
accent Though I should say he did a decent one
in the finest hours he had like a British act
and not a British accent but a Boston accent
and he did Did a decent job, but I love everything.
You know, I've loved those movies. Dave McKenzie's
done. I haven't seen everything directed by Dave
McKenzie, but startup really just put him on
the map for me. I like the idea. I like Braveheart,
but I like taking it a different perspective
is, you know, we've seen that with other historical
films as well. So really looking forward to this
one. Absolutely, so those are all of the picks
that were on just one or two of our list We're
gonna take a quick break when we come back We're
gonna break down the films that were on either
three or four of our list Don't worry We're not
gonna spend an hour on these these ten films
because most people already are familiar with
what the content is So when we come back, we'll
break down the films that were in unison most

no. That's not how this works, sir. Now back
to the show. Do you see how your patience paid
off? Alright, thanks for sticking with us. As
we said before the break, these are the films
that are on either three or all four of our list.
There is six films that were on three of our
list. There is four films that were on all four
of our lists. So we're just gonna go down in
order. What I did is I took where everybody ranked
it, added those up, and we kind of have an order.
So our number 10 film that we have in common
that was on Dan, Amanda, and my list. Amanda,
I'm gonna let you talk about it though because
it is your number one overall. What is it? The
Predator. The Predator. I'm so excited. Probably
my favorite movie character of all time is the
Predator. So getting another look into the Predator
-verse, I'm excited. This film snuck in because
I had it at number 30. Dan, you had it at number
29. So just barely on three of our list. Dan,
why did Predator have enough to make your top
30? Mostly because of my love of the first Predator
and the fact that Shane Black doing it. You know,
I even like, I do like Predator 2. It's, you
know, Danny Glover fighting, you know, fighting
a Predator, interesting enough. And I even like
the, the Predators. It wasn't perfect, but it
had some moments like, you know, he had a, you
know, a Yakuza fighting a Predator with, you
know, sword, sword the claw. So it had, it had
bits that worked, but I'm excited to see, like,
hopefully this would kind of get back to what
the Predator was. I think he's a great character.
Know you kind of seen a lot of different variations
of him. I love his tack growing up Like I had
a predator toy. It was like one of my favorites
I just loved all the like all the little different
pieces of them like the claws the Infrared the
gun it was just you know, I think it's like just
one of the best movie monsters you wanted to
call it a monster I'm not sure but and then Shane
Black who's done some, you know, obviously he
has his career a pretty storied career very different
for him now like, you know, I'm usually Dinking
Shame Black, more crime, kind of comedic type
of movie, but I'm guessing this will be a Predator
movie that takes place during Christmas, because
that's this thing. We'll see. It also has Keegan
-Michael Key and Jacob Tremblay in there, which
is interesting. Little kid? Yeah. Maybe get to
see him eat up by a you know by predator. He's
a lone survivor I don't know so the predator
coming out this year in common is our number
10 pick our number 9 pick on everybody's list
except for Dan's And that would be the I guess
it's only fitting since we're doing a video game
film series So we're slightly interested it looks
like for the new version of Tomb Raider So Matt
you are the one that had it the highest at your
number 14. What about Tomb Raider has given you
hope for a deal? some video game film? Oh man,
I don't know if I actually think it'll be good,
but it doesn't look bad. And the Tomb Raiders
were the best ones we've had, right? They've
just been crappier Indiana Jones movies, so maybe
eventually we'll get one that's just a good Indiana
Jones movie, but with Lara Croft instead of Indiana
Jones. Amanda, what made you put it on the list?
I think Alicia Wakander has... the ability to
push the action in this. She looks the part,
so I want to believe her as the character, and
it would be cool to see some kind of origin stuff
going on. Yeah, for sure. I think she's a great
casting as far as that. That role also has Walton
Goggins in there. Coming out real soon in March,
and also the director that did The Wave. Whatever
that is. I feel like it's on... We saw that,
right? That's the film where the big wave was
coming to crash against the island city? The
coastal city? I don't know. It was a good film.
I remember enjoying it, but it was too long ago
now. But yeah, I'm interested in The Tomb Raider
as well. It was number 25 on my list. Let's go
to our number eight pick. This was on Amanda,
myself, and Dan's list, and that would be the
film Annihilation. Dan what are your thoughts
on annihilation again a situation where you're
based on I was at least the the director who
did ex machina I Like the idea I wasn't reason
reason wasn't higher. So I didn't love the trailers
all that much but you know Natalie Portman just
wrong actress senior and I wouldn't done necessarily
an action role, but I I just think the concept
is it looks different. Like I think that's something
that even if it's like not 100 % successful,
it'll at least be something that's different
and unlike other other movies out there. And
I think we need more movies of that nature. So
that's really why I'm looking forward to it.
This was another one of those films that was
on my list last year as well, I believe, so Natalie
Portman, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Jason Lee. It's
actually probably going to be released by the
time this goes out, because it's got about the
same release date as this episode does, so we'll
have to not anticipate it for too long. Amanda,
you've seen the trailer. Is that what made it
appear on your list, or did you anticipate it
before that? No, I didn't know until I saw the
trailer. Excuse me now. I I really like the concept
like it's scary a shit -looking and It's so far
out there that I don't know you can't not be
intrigued by this story All right the next one
up for us that we had in common on everybody's
list except for mine and that would be Ant -Man
and Wasp Matt, why do you think Ant -Man and
Wasp is something that's you got you intrigued
you headed it all the way up at number five Wow
because like Ant -Man was one of the best like
origin movies of the whole MCU like like I love
that Ant -Man and now that I've seen the trailer
for this one I'm even more excited for it looks
it looks hilarious it looks fun like I don't
know man like Ant -Man was great Why is it not
on your list? I don't know if I have an explanation,
but Amanda, you had this at 15, and Dan, you
had this at 24. Amanda, why Ant Man and the Wasp
so high? I think their dynamic is going to be
super fun. I like Paul Rudd. I like Paul Rudd
as the underdog hero kind of dude. Are we going
to get more Michael Pena in it? Because I feel
like we need that. It was a fun time with Ant
Man, and I think this one is just going to ramp
it up. Dan, obviously, as it becomes every year
now, there's so many comic book films coming
out. Why was Ant -Man and the Wasp something
that rose above maybe some of the other ones
that didn't make your list? I think because I
feel like there's still life in this movie. I
think they're going to have more fun with the
powers of throwing pens, dispensers, and stuff
like that. I feel like they're going to go crazy
with it this year or find a good way to approach
it. And also because it's Paul Rudd and I love
Paul Rudd. Very fair. Alright, our next up on
our most common list, also a film shared by the
three of you that is not on my list, but there's
a reason for that. So let's talk about our, I
guess, highest rated animated film when it comes
to anticipation and that would be The Incredibles
2. So Matt, you had this at number nine. Amanda,
you had it at six. Dan, you had it at 17. So
Amanda, that means you had it at the highest.
Why so much anticipation for the sequel to Incredibles?
You haven't seen Incredibles. Which is why it's
not on my list. So you cannot fathom how excited
the entire planet is about this movie. Like,
people have been waiting for this for so long,
and it was such a really... cute movie it made
um you see like the real side of um superheroes
i feel like it it kind of did what the watchmen
did with showing their life outside of being
a superhero and how intertwines with being a
superhero without being so dark like the watchman
it definitely is real like you see he's like
depressed with you know What life is after being
superhero? So it's a really cool look into it,
but also their team and family dynamic is Is
great and the individual Family members are so
strong that them coming together is just it's
awesome. It's incredible Matt, what do you think
about Incredibles 2 and why was it in your top
10? Oh man because like Like I loved the first
one. Um And the first one was unique and fun.
I'm surprised it took them so dang long to make
a second one. And I'm actually, I guess, worried
because the first one was so good and it was
so long ago. Can they recapture that magic? Is
it going to still work for me? Because I wasn't
an adult when I saw the first one, and now I'm
definitely an adult. Dan, what do you think of
the incredible sequel? Yeah, it was the one incredible
film that you felt like there was actually room
for a sequel. It's the best Fantastic Four film
we've ever gotten. Bradford hasn't had, I loved
his Mission Impossible 4 film, but I know Tomorrowland
had some issues, so I'm glad he's coming back
to it, because I feel like he has. He's a really
good visual storyteller, and I love the trailer,
him doing the Mr. Mom type of story with this
guy with the superhero trying to be dad. I think
that could be a good way to approach it. I'm
not what I expected them to approach it with
a story. I thought they would be more like a
superhero team. Think that's been done before
so I like that idea so I you know and I Crossed
Pixar for the most part because even you know
they Rarely do they have an awful or bad movie.
You might have an okay movie, but usually it's
pretty good Yeah, absolutely. All right, the
last one that's only on three of our lists because
it's not on Amanda's list. It's number 21 on
mine, number four on Matt's, and Dan all the
way up to number two on your list, and that would
be Isle of Dogs. Dan, why don't you talk about
that one first? It's Wes Anderson who I love
I love soft motion animation. I love fantastic.
Mr. Fox and it's like I could see why some people
would watch the trailer for I love dogs and just
like hate every little thing about it But I just
I look forward to I love Wes Anderson. I just
he puts so much thought in you know, I'm interested
in the interest the intricacies of his His production
design is amazing and I just love the look of
the movie. So I'm really looking forward to it,
like I said. I think watching Wes Anderson maybe
doesn't get out of his comfort zone as a director.
He has that type of semi -tone with everything,
but I love that tone. I love what he does, so
I'm all for more of it. That's why I'm really
looking forward to it. Matt, obviously you are
too. You're number four, so why so much anticipation
for Isle of Dogs? I have not seen a Wes Anderson
movie that I didn't just love, just adore. I
can't wait for this one. I'm upset I missed Fantastic
Mr. Fox in theaters because I didn't realize
it was Wes Anderson. It just looked like a silly
stop -motion movie and I don't always get down
on those. So I gotta rectify that with this one
and I gotta see this one in theaters. Alright,
obviously I'm anticipating to have liked most
of the Wes Anderson films I've seen although
I still have some blind spots there but definitely
intrigued by this one as well and obviously you
got most of the usual suspects as far as the
cast goes coming back and doing some voice works
and different stuff so Isle of Dogs definitely
on a lot of people's radar the rest of them are
on all four of our lists so we had four picks
that we all had in common The lowest ranking
out of all those would be Deadpool 2. Deadpool
2, I had it at number 19. Dan, you had it at
16. Amanda, all the way down at 24. Matt, all
the way up at 7. So let you start, Matt, with
Deadpool 2. Quick comment? Oh, man. Like, the
first one was a lot funnier than I expected.
I didn't expect to like it as much as I did.
So I'll probably see this one, too. Amanda the
lowest obviously because you had maybe the lowest
reaction from the first one But you're still
holding out hope that the second one's a fun
adventure for you Yeah, I think that this I'll
probably enjoy this a lot more. I think it's
gonna be more More action less strip clubs Also
another different type of I think what's maybe
benefiting us this year with all the different
comic book films We have a lot that have kind
of a little you know different feel Yeah, some
of them that have big grand stages some of them
Then like a man they're gonna be able to explore
some other, you know Interesting things that
they can do with the size Deadpool a little bit
more comedy Dan. Is that gonna work in its favor?
I don't know. It's certainly it's gonna be you
know the comedy when it comes to Deadpool is
It's concept but also, you know having that already
it can get a lot, you know more graphic and I
think what's really gonna be interesting is when
you have the character cable come in who Growing
up he was one of my favorite characters there's
actually a series that I really adore called
able cable and Deadpool and So seeing them come
together and this is exciting It's basically,
you know straight man and your your wacky sidekick,
but it can work So it's gonna be I think even
more effective when he has the kick someone like,
you know, when you put like a wacky, over the
top character with someone who's ultra serious,
you know, you know, Jeff Brolin can be a great
actor when he when he's trying. So and it's going
to be though odd that he'll be in Deadpool 2
and other movie we'll get to as well. That'll
be like coming out in the same month. So he'll
just be making all the money. All the money's.
Alright our number three film that we all have
in common no matter what all the negative Hello
has been about it. We're all still looking forward
to solo a Star Wars story. No surprise there
from this group I have solo as my number two
film overall that I'm most anticipating should
be number one now actually since the other films
not coming out till 2019 Matt you had it at number
one Amanda number 12 Dan number 25 Matt solo
Star Wars story number one film this year for
you? Talk about it. I mean, it's got Han Solo,
it's got Lando, it's got all those other people
I don't know that I wanna know. I'm gonna be
reading books about, I'm gonna read every tie
-in, everything they send out. This movie, it
looks great. I had a lot of doubts, a lot of
worries, because everyone's talking shit. And
then the teaser came out during the Super Bowl
real early, which was awesome. And I was hooked.
That dong lover guy like he's perfect as Lando
like it's so hyped Amanda on the Star Wars train
with solo not tired of it yet Not yet, and I
think this is something that Anybody who's anybody
and cares about Star Wars has been excited for
so Dan thoughts on solo I actually got a little
concerned about it considering all the switching
director and things of that nature. I ended up
really liking the trailer though so it has me
back on board and considering it is my first
round traffic, I hope everyone sees it. It makes
lots and lots of money. But I can't think of
his name right off the top of my head, but the
guy who's playing Han Solo, he was amazing in
Hail Caesar two years ago and ever since like
that and he was announced, I'm like, okay, I
can see him in that role. Doesn't necessarily
have the voice, but I'm kind of glad he's not
trying to ape Harrison Ford voice, because I
think it would be awkward. But I think he has
kind of that. that that charm that's needed for
a role like that. Right. Obviously, this one's
slated for May 25th. Aaron Reich is the character
you're talking or the actor you're talking about.
Glover, we have Amelia Clarke, Woody Harrelson.
I mean... It's part of my name Optimus Solo.
So that's why so I'm intrigued to learn more
about this Han Solo character that we already
know and love so I have not seen the teaser yet.
So I can't base it off of that I'm just excited
because it's Han Solo so and that leaves us to
Our second to last film that we need to talk
about and that would be Avengers Infinity War
on everybody's list as well. My number 10, Matt
your number 3, Amanda your number 8, Dan your
number 1. Dan, start us off. Why is Avengers
Infinity War your most anticipated film? You
know, I know a lot of people have superhero fatigue
and a lot of people are kind of... complain about
Marvel and all of what, you know, they feel like
they're formulaic and they kind of want this
all, this kind of machine to go over, but I really
don't care anything about that. Like I would
have been legitimately looking, you know, a movie
that's been building for 10 years, like watching
that trailer. It's like, this is why I enjoy
movies. This is why I want to go to the movies.
It's combining everything. I love into just like,
you know, two and a half hours of just pure.
Entertainment in the best form possible, you
know, finally Thanos is is being revealed. I've
watched that trailer Upteenth time there's a
good chance, you know, I'm watching it right
now by that I mean when we're doing this podcast
if you're listening to this podcast There's a
good chance. I'm watching that trailer even you
know, whenever you're listening to it I just
the use of the theme of the Avengers theme. It's
just got me like I I feel like it's just like
it's all these things are just kind of coming
together, you know, and getting the guardians
of the galaxy into the in the fold. And I don't
know. It's just like it's just like, oh, OK,
this is what they've been doing for all this
time. It just you just see like all the hard
work that they've been putting in and all the
pieces they've been building. And now, you know,
it's my only concern is knowing that this is
three and then there's four coming up and there's
going to be like it's going to leave off of like,
you know, like a to be continued or how they're
going to how they're going to do that. But. As
the Russo Brothers who did Civil War, which I
loved, did Winter Soldier, which I still think
is Marvel's best movie. But yeah, so that's why
it's my most anticipated movie of the year. Sometimes
it's just simply as simple as that. Yeah, absolutely.
Matt, quick comment on Avengers Infinity War.
I think that the infinity gauntlet story is one
of the most bonkers ridiculous stories And I'm
sad that we're never going to get that on the
big screen. I'm excited to see what they're going
to do Like I've loved or enjoyed every Marvel
movie leading up to this I can't wait like I'll
just take more. They're all good Yeah. Alright.
That leaves only one film that we don't really
need to talk about because it would technically
have been our number one in common pick, meaning
we all had it a combined highest ranking because
I had it at number four overall, Matt had it
at number two, Amanda had it at four, and Dan
you had it at number ten. But this film has already
been released so we don't need to spend too much
time on it and that would have been Black Panther.
At the time of this record, three of us have
not seen it so we're still anticipating it. Matt
has seen it. Dan, you're about, you know, six
or twelve. or whatever it is away from seeing
it. So what's the excitement level now as it's
so close to being able to see Black Panther?
You know, I'm super excited. I know it's I feel
like though It's the bad part is it like I don't
know if any movie could ever live live up to
the hype that's been built around it Just it's
you know, I like I feel like it's almost built
up to be disappointed because of everything people
have been saying when I still think I'm gonna
Enjoy it. I love Ryan Coogler's other movies
Creed, which I don't know. We know Creed 2 is
coming out this year, which is also my top 30
Then we all need a fruitful station on them in
the movie that I loved seeing this kind of guy
come out of nowhere and now he's directing what
may be the biggest movie of the year is insane.
So yeah. Amanda, we're only about 18 hours away
from seeing Black Panther. Are you still as excited
as you have been in the months leading up to
it? Yeah, especially after seeing really awesome
stuff said on Facebook about it and talking to
friends who've seen it I'm really excited to
see the action and I heard the the villain is
really good So I'm excited for that Matt will
hold off on getting any thoughts from you until
we have a chance to talk about some form of review
of the Black Panther, but obviously you were
anticipating it leading up to the point where
you saw it this past weekend as well. There was
a few films on here that were on two people's
lists that didn't get a chance to get in the
conversation just real quickly what those were,
like Dan just said, Creed II. We also had A Quiet
Place, Mission Impossible, were the other films
that appeared on multiple people's lists that
did not get named. I thought it'd be interesting
to see who had the most crossover and which cinema
geeks are most alike each other. not been somewhat
given away here over the course of the record.
But Matt, you and I only had one film in common
in our top 30. Matt and Dan shared two films.
Matt and Amanda shared, I think, eight films.
Seven, excuse me, seven. Dan and myself shared
six films. Dan and Amanda shared three. And Amanda,
you and I shared two. So if this was a dating
app, we would not be matching up. So it looks
like it would be me and Dan and you and Matt.
Yeah So those are our films that we are most
anticipating just real quick last statements
last words on the film year of 2018 starting
with you Dan What's your excitement level just
for the year in general of the year of film that
will be 2018? Yeah, I don't know honestly like
I there's you know movie certainly be excited
about but I felt like this year was really hard.
There was not as many obvious choices outside
of some of the franchise films. Even some of
the movies I'm looking forward to based on the
directors, who knows if they'll be as good. But
there's a good selection here. I think there's
still some things that can surprise people. There's
some movies we didn't talk about that I'm looking
forward to, like some smaller films. There's
a documentary on Mr. Rogers and one documentary
on Sesame Street that I think... Hopefully we'll
bring joy to the world. So I don't know what
this year is gonna be like I feel like, you know
We're gonna have huge hits like a Black Panther
But like what the next ones are gonna like where
the surprise or or where some of the other franchises
are gonna hold up We'll see. Yeah, some of the
other films are on people's top 30 that didn't
get mentioned Christopher Robin, please stand
by Beach bum the Apostle boy erased black Klansman
Jurassic world the next one Mary Poppins returns
Super Troopers 2, Bumblebee, Leave No Trace,
Won't You Be My Neighbor, and I'm gonna say that
other one wrong so I'm not gonna say it. Amanda,
what are you doing, looking forward to this year
overall? Do you think there's a lot of prospective
winners for you? Uh, yes. You got some horror
films, we got some fantasy sci -fi, you got your
Harry Potter. I mean there's basically everything
that I need right here. Predator. Harry Potter,
Predator. Horror films. Sandy Bee. We're good.
So you're looking forward to this year overall?
Yeah, yeah, for sure. Matt? Are you, do you have
enough films here that we've talked about today
that you're excited to make some theater trips
outside of the six times you're gonna see Solo?
I mean, do I need anything other than that, though?
Like, that's pretty pointed. Like, I'm gonna
see every comic book movie except, like, probably.
Like, that said, like, I don't know. My top 10
to 15 I felt real strong on, and then everything
after that was... exponentially less excited
right so like i don't know like maybe maybe i'll
go to the theater 10 times and five of them will
be solo and i'll be okay with that Yeah, nothing
wrong with that. Absolutely. We're gonna try
to drag you a few more times though to some of
these other ones But yeah, I think there's some
interesting stuff from the franchise state I
think there's some interesting stuff that we've
already talked about as far as some of these
directors or some of these Sequels and stuff
like that nature and I think we might get some
hidden surprises in there I don't know if we'll
get like a 12 years of slave or something of
that stature, but there's some potential there
So I'm interested to see there's definitely a
lot more films that we could be talking about
I know Dan usually has together, you know At
least 50 or a hundred films that he's looking
forward to so we might have a post Coming on
the website if we have time to get to that so
if you want to peruse that to see some even Further
discussions on films that are coming out you
can definitely check that out And there's always
films that we don't know about at this time of
the year that by the time the year is over we're
talking about with the award season or You know
or box office gold with a sneaky pick in there
or something of that nature so that does it for
our 2018 most anticipated films when we come
back next time with our next episode. We'll probably
be going right back into finishing off our video
game film franchise and continuing through our
Kevin Smith filmography. So those are the things
that you'll be looking forward to us in the next
couple episodes. So that does it for this week.
Tune in next time for another chance to listen
to The Cinema Geeks.
