Hey, this is Steve Blum, and you are listening

to the Geekcast Radio Network. Today on episode

83 of The Cinema Geeks, we take a look ahead

at what the month of March has in store for us

along with some predictions. We discuss the best

and worst trailers to debut over the past couple

weeks. And we give our thoughts on the current

box office king, Deadpool. All that and more

coming up on episode 83 with The Cinema Geeks.

That's right. It's episode 83 with the cinema

geeks I am one of your geeks optimists solo and

joining me as the use is hard candy Mandy. Hello

per use. What's up? I don't know You've confused

me now. I've confused myself and you do when

you try to use my word I can't talk like you

and movie revolt Dan. Hello. Hey, how's it going?

Not too bad and we've shut the the door on February.

We're looking ahead this week to March We're

gonna do this every month for the rest of the

year. We didn't do it for January and February

for Very legitimate reasons because there wasn't

much to preview but we'll try to do this every

month going forward It's kind of look ahead at

what the month is going to have to offer and

then look back at the previous month And what

happened with that so we're gonna be doing that

So this is the time that we'll actually touch

a little bit more on box office rotten tomatoes

and trailers like we have been Skipping over

other episodes recently and in this episode we

will not have a main attraction since it is basically

more so Looking back at February so far and looking

ahead at March, but we will have a Good chunk

of time spent on what we have been watching.

We actually have an in common film this week

so we're gonna actually spend a little bit of

time on Deadpool as well as a couple other films

that we've caught up with over the past few weeks.

Dan, how's your week going and are you ready

to get into more of the movie season as we head

into March -April? Yeah, we're going well. We're

recording this a little bit before the Oscar

so I've been spending some time trying to catch

up with some of those movies that I've missed.

But it's going well. You know, it's uh, weather's

nice. It's been warm. It's nice coming home and

it's still sunny out. So that's really great.

Yeah. We have somehow in our area, apparently

for the most part have bypassed winter this year.

We, I don't even know how it happened. Like we

had one little spell. We had some piece of those.

But that's been about it. I mean, usually we're

way worse condition than we are. How do you stop

talking about it? Because tomorrow is going to

be a freaking blizzard. Yeah, that was probably

my bad. I cursed us. But yeah, I'm looking forward

to the spring and getting out of this winter

haze. We have had a different season every week.

Like one week we have a blizzard, next week we

have ice. This week we had thunderstorms and

tornadoes this week. Oh, that's fun to add to

the mix. Yeah, so it's been nice. It's been nice.

The world is ending where you live. We live in

a role in an Emmerich movie. So that's not good

for anybody usually. Anyways, let's go ahead

and get right into it by looking a little bit

at the box office. Now, not a lot to look back

on so far because it's still kind of early in

January and February. It doesn't usually have

a lot to offer, but as far as the box office

from February and January so far, I mean, it's

pretty clear unless people have been living under

a rock. what's happening with the box office.

And that is it all starts and ends with Deadpool

so far. Dan, we did our box office predictions

a month or so ago. Did we sell Deadpool short?

I greatly did because I didn't even include it

in my top 15. So I like when doing that, I thought

it undersold it completely greatly. So I did

not think it would do nearly as well as it did.

It means to the point where it's made more money

than like so many huge box office or so many

big Comic book movies like every X -Men movie

more than Iron Man and so many more and it's

still not stopping So I completely undersold

it. I thought it wouldn't do nearly as well I

thought it would be more line along the lines

of kick -ass maybe make a hundred million dollars

or something of that nature and it made more

than that on its first weekend so kudos I'm glad

I'm wrong I really am yeah I'm very happy that

I wasn't correct I guess I just I didn't know

how well that character would translate to general

audiences and it seems to be translating pretty

well see I have learned one thing from this and

that is that I need to be more confident with

my picks and not second -guess myself so much

when we're doing those box office predictions

because I was almost like trying to talk myself

out of putting it on my list uh when we did that

countdown so yeah i'm glad it did well too my

fear now though is that and we can get into this

a little bit more with with uh when we just talk

about it but my fear more is Centering on the

reaction that it's gonna be from Hollywood and

the film studios I'm gonna leave it at that so

you can kind of get more into it when we talk

about the the film later on in this episode but

I am somewhat trepidatious about some effects

from Its success, but I am very glad that it

succeeded and it's the only really There's only

two films, I think, at this point that are above

100 million. Kung Fu Panda 3 being the other

one. So those are the two films that are reigning

supreme at the box office. But it's not close.

Deadpool is way out in front. And if we're doing

the flip side and looking at our early entrance

for the biggest bomb category for the year, I

think right now it's got to sit on two different

films. And that is The Fifth Wave and Pride and

Prejudice and Zombies and... I think that's the

end of that title. But those two films are not

doing good. They've gained a little probably

over the last week, but Last Eye Check, Fifth

Way was only, it was not even close to its budget,

and Pride and Prejudice was also. I mean, they're

easy bombs so far. Anything else looking back

so far that surprised you besides Deadpool doing

so well, Dan? I guess Hail Caesar doing so poorly.

I don't know if it surprised me. I had wondered.

I didn't think that movie would do super, super

well, but being one of the biggest bombs for

the Coens, if you look at their box office and

how much it was, the cast that was there, it's

made less than the fifth wave. It's only made

about $26 million at this point. So yeah, that

one, it was kind of sad. It kind of said that

it did not gain nearly anything this past year.

Besides that, like you said, it's February and

January, so just a lot of just nothing much,

basically. Amanda, were you surprised that Deadpool

did as well? I know you had it also on your list

of biggest box office for the year, but are you

surprised at the level that it's succeeding so

far? I guess in the grand scheme of all the comic

book movies. I was a little surprised, but I

think it's kind of set in, and now that I'm thinking

about it, it's not a big surprise at all based

on all the hype that was around it. And all the

nine -year -olds that got in, too. I mean, that's

just extra money. And to give you an idea of

the actual gap, Deadpool's currently sitting

around $236 million, and Kung Fu Panda 3 is in

second with $117 million. So there's over $100

million. gap there um so yeah it's it's definitely

not even close um yeah the fifth wave the budget

on that one was 38 million and i guess it's it's

almost it's crept up there a little bit it's

up to 31 um so i mean It might not end up being

a complete bomb, but for the first couple of

weeks it was definitely pretty scary, and Pride

and Prejudice and Zombies had a 28 million budget

and it's only at 10. So it's not like bombs to

the effect that we had last year with The Seventh

Son and Jupiter Ascending, but if you had to

pick ones, I guess those would be the ones that

you would point to. As we look ahead to March,

as we kind of get into revving up steam here

with more movies coming out and more big -name

movies, coming out, we're going to do this three

ways when we look at the box office. So we're

not just making our one box office prediction.

Now we're going to be doing it this year. is

we have three different categories that will

all be participating in the first one we're going

to be calling the the pick to click that's not

original that's obviously been used by a lot

of things but pick to click so uh... something

that could be a prediction for what's going to

be number one for all of march it could be just

a prediction on a certain film being a financial

success or you know far surpassing its budget

or any type of specific number goal that one

of us wants to give to uh... film so something

positive as far as the box office goes Then we're

also going to pick a bet to bomb. I need to come

up with better titles. And that would be a pick

for the film that's most likely not to make its

budget or to be a bomb at the box office, not

a success financially. And then the third one

can just be any box office -related prediction

you can think of. We'll call that our wild card

pick. So it's kind of like when they do the football

picks. They have their sure -finnings, their

upsets, their wild cards. So we're going to try

to do something like that. So if any of that

made sense, Dan. Where do you want to start your

pick to click or a bomb or wild card? Where do

we want? Where do we want to start? I guess I'll

get my my bomb out of the way and it's it's hard

because I don't think there's There's not a lot

of like hugely like big temple films next next

in March that I think have a chance of bombing

but one that I think it's gonna super bomb especially

compared to the original and that's my big fat

Greek wedding to the coming out next year or

next month coming out in March just it's been

such a long time since that movie the first one

came out and and it was noted just one of the

highest profited movies of all time uh and it

was ended up being this gigantic hit i see that

one just completely flopping and really gaining

no steam whatsoever just because it's kind of

come and gone it's i don't even know it's been

like over 10 maybe even longer than that so i

just and i think I have seen absolutely very

little for that movie to begin with, so I don't

see that movie being successful in any way, shape,

or form. I like that pick. I'm mad that I didn't

think about that one, because I completely agree

with everything you're saying. I can totally

see it happening that way. Amanda, what was your

bomb pick? This may be wishful thinking, but

I'm going to go with Allegiant. Damn it. What?

That's my bomb pick, too. All right, so we'll

piggyback on this one, I guess. I don't know

if that should be allowed or if I should have

to pick something else. Yeah, the Divergent series,

Allegiant. Why is that your pick to bomb? I just

feel like it's losing steam. I think that there's

some, uh... I don't know, just a lot of issues

with the series, and I don't know if it's just

me that can't get on board or what. No, I don't

think you're alone, because even myself, I tried

to, like... Give it the benefit of the doubt

and after the first one be like, you know, maybe

it'll be worth it to stick with this series but

after the second one I've checked out and I don't

know how many people will be interested in the

third one The second one did not do as well as

the first one. I don't believe so I can see this

continuously going downhill and I don't know.

I just don't see it as a series that a lot of

people are just ooh -ing and ah -ing. It's not

like the Hunger Games. It's not like some of

these other films that has really gained an audience

to me. Well, I feel like it's got to have a huge

budget. I mean, the special effects movies are

outrageous, so a huge budget with a following

that's probably falling off. Yeah. I mean, we're

probably picking a bomb that's still going to

make over $100 million, but hopefully compared

to its budget. I don't know what its budget was,

but... Out of people that like this film that

we just don't associate with, so maybe that's

our problem. Oh, I think that's a good problem

to have, just saying. So we'll double up on the

Allegiant pick as our bomb picks. Amanda, where

do you want to go next, Wild Card or your pick

to click? Let's do pick to click. Alright, what

is it? I'm going to go with Zootopia. Are you

freaking kidding me? That's also my pick to click.

Well, stop looking at my papers. You're not on

the Zootopia train, are you? No, I'm going to

go with the obvious route, but you know, what

are you going to do? Okay, so why Zootopia, Amanda?

I think it looks super cute, and I think a ton

of people are going to go see this, drag their

kids, the kids are going to drag them. I think

that there's already a huge hype about it. I

see it on Facebook all the time. I mean, the

trailer's been out for a while now. I just feel

like it's going to be another Kung Fu Panda.

Well, and that's why I was going to say, even

though we have had Kung Fu... Kung Fu? The Kung

Fu! Kung Fu! Even though we have had Kung Fu

Panda 3, I think people, you know, it was a sequel

and yeah, it did okay, but I think people are

ready for like the first major animated film

of the year. I'm not going to consider Kung Fu

Panda 3 major, I guess. But I think they're ready

for this one and I think they, the kids are going

to come out in force and it's going to be hit

the right time, too, for it. I think, I think

Zootopia is going to do real well. Looks super

cute! I think it's... It's going to be a good

time. All right. So those are our picks to click.

Dan, where are you going? Well, they say go big

or go home. So I'm going to go big with Batman

v Superman. And obviously, it's going to make

a lot of money. But I think it's going to, when

we did a box office predictions for 2015, I said

it's going to be the biggest movie of the year.

So for it to do that, it's going to have to do

more than Deadpool. And I think it has the potential.

My prediction is that it's going to get close.

Possibly beat that of the opening weekend of

the Avengers It's coming out to the point where

you know, it's it's gonna be Sometime before

we have a big movie of that since Deadpool I

think people are gonna be wanting to see something

again like a big movie of that nature It's been

around just the idea of it's been around forever

feel like like we've been talking about this

movie I don't know since this podcast has started

and And it's Batman and Superman, two of the

biggest iconic characters of all time. Their

names on a marquee, you think you're going to

get people to go see it. So I'm going all in

in the Batman v Superman train. And I think the

last trailer that they just put out won a lot

of people over that some of the other trailers

didn't. So maybe there's potential there. I actually

cannot believe it's coming out this month. I'm

like, whoa, whoa, wait, wait. We even talked

about this now. I even have it on my paper. And

I still can't. and then it's actually coming

out now, finally it's gonna be here. I know,

I know what we're gonna do afterwards. No, we

still got three weeks of hype. And it's also

like 14 hours long, so there's a... So actually

we'll start in March, but it might end in April.

Alright, so that would leave us with our wild

card picks. For my wild card pick, I'm going

to do a head -to -head matchup on who's going

to win, and I'm trying to go at least somewhat

of the same genre, even though they're probably

not the same type of film. And they're both somewhat

comedy -based. One's more kind of a war comedy,

I guess you could say, and the other one maybe

a little bit more secret agent comedy. So I'm

going to pit Whiskey Tango Foxtrot up against

the Brothers Grimsby. So Tina Fey against Mr.

Cohen, not the Cohen brothers, but Sasha. Sasha

Baron Cohen. And I'm going to say that Grimsby

is going to make more than whiskey, tango, foxtrot.

I'm going to bet against Tina Fey and actually

say that more people are going to go with the

Mark Strong, Sasha Baron Cohen joint. So that's

where I'm going with that one. Amanda, where's

your wild card? Okay, so I don't really know

what to do for that. I mean I have a pick that

I think is gonna do pretty good here It could

be anything you want. It's a wild card. Well,

I don't even know that means we're gonna give

you a couple seconds I think Dan help her out.

What are you gonna do for your wild card pick?

So I kind of took the same idea that you did

I'm looking at two films that are similar genres

and that's midnight special in 10 Cloverfield

Lane trying to think of You know which one's

gonna do better. I think it's kind of obvious

that Cloverfield Lane will do pretty well, but

I'm I'm thinking if you're looking at overall

Profit budget based upon box office that maybe

Midnight Special is gonna surprise a lot of people

so I'm gonna say when it comes to Uh, overall

profit that midnight special is going to do better

than tentacle of a real lane. Um, though none

of them, neither of them are super, super expensive,

but I'm thinking, I'm thinking tentacle from

field lane is not going to meet with the expectations

that people might think it is going to, because

it doesn't, I think there's still confusion over

exactly what it is. Is it really a Clovenfield

sequel? Is it like a, I don't know. So that makes

me wonder if that. I'm confused on that myself.

I need someone to explain it all to me, so I

wasn't sure if it had anything to do with that

or not. Amanda? Okay, well I also have Midnight

Special on here, and so in alignment with what

you're going to do to change it up for my purposes,

Dan, I'm going to say that Cloverfield Lane does

better than Midnight Special. go right against

him. Just to do it, yeah. There you go, hey.

Alright, well there can only be one winner in

that matchup then. Well I'm gonna go get my Highlander

sword. There can only be one. Alright, so that

is our predictions for March for the box office.

You have to check us out towards the end of the

month as we look back to see how we did and when

we get ready to preview April. Looking back at

the Rotten Tomatoes so far, a quick list of the

winners and the losers as a... This is at least

based on when I've looked at it last here. So

first let's start with the winners and The winners

even though it might not be at the box office

Dan one of the third highest I think as of right

now for Rotten Tomatoes is Hail Caesar which

had an 80 % last I checked it might have dropped

a little bit or Changed in the last couple days,

but it was at 80 % when I checked Kung Fu Panda

3 at 82 And Deadpool was at 84, so a correlation

there between Box Office and Critical, as far

as Rot Tomatoes goes, with Deadpool and Kung

Fu leading both, does that surprise you? I'm

surprised that Deadpool's leading both, yeah.

I thought it would do decently well, but I feel

like a voice critic saw what Deadpool was trying

to do and kind of bought into it, but yeah. I'm

actually probably more surprised that Kung Fu

Panda 3 was as well regarded because usually

when you get to the third movie of an animated

franchise, unless it's a toy story, you tend

to kind of fall off. So that's probably more

of a surprise to me. And then as far as looking

at the worst, I have four movies that did terrible

at the Rotten Tomatoes so far. Amanda, do you

have any guesses as far as movie releases so

far in 2016 that just absolutely tanked as far

as the reviews go? Any guesses? Fifth Wave? Fifth

Wave is one of them at 17%. A high 17 % for Fifth

Wave. Dan, do you got a guess? Uh, jeez, um...

That's a good question. But... I have no... Pride,

the zombie movie? The Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies?

Actually, no. Not one of the four lowest on here.

At least when I last checked. Amanda, anything

else you got? I don't even remember what's come

out so far. Alright, the other three... The the

least bad of them is Zoolander at 22 % Wow, I

didn't even realize that was that bad Zoolander

22 % fifth wave at 17 % to worse right along

to 14 % and The bottom of the barrel so far this

dirty grandpa dirty grandpa at 9 % 9 % for Dirty

Grandpa. So that's what's happening so far this

year on Rotten Tomatoes. So now we're going to

look ahead for our March predictions. And this

is real simple. We're just going to go good and

bad here. So certified fresh or certified rotten.

So you can either do one or two predictions on

a film that will rank 75 % or higher. One or

two films that you think are going to rank 25%.

or lower. Dan, we'll start with you. What's one

of your picks for Rotten Tomatoes? For one, I

think that's going to be Rotten is London has

Fallen. I see that being... I kind of like the

Olympus has Fallen, but the sequel seems to be

just insane. It just looks gigantically insane.

And I don't see that going over well with critics

at all, especially considering it's just going

to be this gigantic, huge action film. So I don't...

I don't think it'll be like 17 percent, but it's

gonna be in the low end of rotten. I'm almost

positive. Okay. Amanda, a rotten pick? A rotten

pick. Kindergarten Cop 2. Is that even gonna...

I don't even know if that'll get reviewed on

Rotten Tomatoes. I have other picks. Yeah, go

with another one, because I don't think that'll

actually get reviews. We'll do Brothers Grimsby

then. You think it's gonna be rotten? I think

they're gonna shit on this movie. Okay. Alright,

for my rotten pick, I am going to go... I was

going to go with London Aspawn too, but I'll

switch it up, and I will say the Disappointment

Room, if that even gets reviews. That looked

like it was a pile of dog. And that is, for those

of you that don't even know what I'm talking

about, that's a thriller starring Kate Beckinsale.

And I just don't see the critics reviewing that

very well. But I'm with you, Dan. I think London

is Fallen is also going to be rotten as well.

As far as fresh films, Amanda? I want to say

Eye in the Sky. Eye in the Sky. I think it's

going to be along the lines of American Sniper.

Is that just because Helen Mirren's in it? I

don't even know who that is. You don't know who

Helen Mirren is? No. She was speechless. You

would know her if you saw her. She is like the

quintessential British lady, old lady, yeah.

Oh, the M? No. Yeah! That's Judy Dench. Oh, okay.

You're getting your British lady confused. You're

gonna have to answer to this on the Twitter world

when people attack you for not knowing who Helen

is. I don't give a shit. You know who Fetty Wap

is? No. No, but apparently I work with somebody

that looks like him. Let's move on. Alright,

for my fresh pick, I'm gonna double down on Zootopia.

I know that's an easy... pick probably, but because

the critics usually like the animated films,

but I'm going to go with it as a box office success

and a Rotten Tomato success, much like Kung Fu

Panda 3. Dan, what do you got? I will double

down as well and say Midnight Special is going

to be fresh. I love the director, everything

he's done so far. Trailer looks really interesting,

solid cast, so I'm the one I'm probably the most

most have the most confidence in at this point.

Good to go anybody else have any other Rotten

Tomatoes ones they want to try to get bonus points

for? I think the lobster is gonna be fresh I'm

pretty sure that one already is fresh Just because

half the world has seen the lobster already,

but well what the then I mean I'm already winning

You're pulling the game I see I'm gonna call

you Hiro from now on trying to find those loopholes

Oh, I thought you were going to say something

else. Alright, so that's it for our Rotten Tomatoes

predictions. We'll have to see how those pan

out if we're right or wrong on that first time

doing it, so we'll have to see. Getting into

a little bit of news stories and trailers before

we take a break. We have just three quick news

stories that came out somewhat recently. One

kind of ties into our discussion a little bit

about Deadpool and maybe a little bit more to

what I was alluding to when we were talking about

the box office. Are we going to have more R -rated

comic book movies on the horizon? The movies

that are being thrown about as possible are gaining,

garnering an R rating would be The X -Force Movie

and Wolverine 3. So my question, Dan, is basically

my fear is that people are going to see Deadpool's

success. and translate that into just trying

to do the same thing that they did as far as

just let's make something R rated, let's make

it sarcastic or crass or whatever it is that

they pin in on and they're not going to realize

the real reason why Deadpool was a success and

it had a lot less to do with that and a lot more

to do with letting the story be told the way

it should be letting the creative people do kind

of follow through on their vision and create

something that was somewhat accurate to the the

source material etc and Do you have any fears

that they're just gonna say hey Deadpool worked

and it was R rated and it had this this and this

so let's just make carbon copies of that and

go forward or do you think that they're gonna

do something different as far as not just kind

of putting our rating and trying to go that route

when it comes to movie studios difference never

really they're they're bag it's usually let's

try to find the the easiest thing to do in order

to try to repeat the success of something. And

if it's like with Guardians of the Galaxy, oh,

they used a pop song in their trailer. So then

that's kind of unexpected. So now let's do that

with all these different movies like with Suicide

Squad or other things. And yeah, to think that

Deadpool was successful because it was an R rating,

it's like thinking that like Guardians of the

Galaxy was successful just because it took place

in space or just because of random or just because

it used. Certain songs or kiss at a talking tree

it was it was I think what there's what you're

seeing in James Gunn actually Had a pretty good

Piece about this regarding like why those movies

are successful was because they were first good

or at least a lot of people thought they were

and They were different in original and they

were like kind of apart from the norm and it's

just And I think that's the problem is that that's

hard to do. And you can't necessarily, you know,

make a formula for originality because that's

the point of it. So what movie studios tend to

do is like, OK, well, let's look at factors that

we can easily repeat and then do that. And I

don't think you need like the fact that they're

trying to. Reshape Wolverine to be more like

Deadpool or like, okay, let's make more R -rated

things It's kind of ridiculous because it's it's

it's like, you know the same reason why when

they look at movies like Electra or Catwoman,

they say, oh, now we can't, women comic book

movies don't do well. It's like, no, those movies

didn't do well because they were god -awful movies.

So make good movies, market them well, and they'll

be successful, but they always try to either

make it more complicated than it needs to be

by trying to make things are that now they're

coming out with Batman v Superman, R -rated Blu

-ray, which is ridiculous because... I thought

was great that Deadpool was an R -rated movie

because it's based upon a mercenary with a mouth

and like that's not really a man who kills people

for money. It's not a PG -13 concept, but Superman

is. Superman is a PG, PG -13 concept even when

he's fighting Batman. And we shouldn't make a

Superman movie that kids can't see because that

goes against everything that character stands

for. So I really think it's idiotic what they're

doing with this. Wolverine I can somewhat understand

an R -rated rating for, but it's still not necessary.

I mean, I thought the last Wolverine movie was

fine, and then they had the R -rated, like, Blu

-ray edition, which was no better than the movie

that was in theaters, so it's just this, I don't

know. It's just, to me, a marketing standpoint

of just trying to jump on whatever the next thing

is, and it's never worth it. It's sad. It is

because it's just putting doing something just

to do it It's not doing something because it's

actually necessary or because it fits what you're

the you know Like I said this source material

or you know staying true to the character or

the universe or whatever It's just like hey,

we think this will make us money. So we're gonna

tag this on here. We're gonna add this to it

and I don't know, Amanda, I mean you really like

Deadpool, you really like the art ratings and

what they were able to do with that. Do you want

to see more comic book films art rated or does

it have to be a specific type that gets that?

Well I think you need to wait until the Deadpool

review section of this to really find out how

I feel. So you can't say that I super liked it.

I did appreciate that it was... rated based on

like what Dan said it's a fucking mercenary and

all he does is say a bunch of crazy awful shit

and do a bunch of nastiness I think that it was

appropriate for that but definitely not all in

any comic book movie definitely and I definitely

agree with you Dan and when you shouldn't make

a superman movie that kids can't see that's the

that's I don't believe that either so all right

Moving on to our next piece of news here, the

next Predator film got a title. I only bring

this up because you love the Predator franchise

so much, Amanda. This is one of my favorite characters

ever. So we get a new poster and a new title,

and it's pretty creative. The title for the next

Predator film is going to be called The Predator.

Are you blown away by that? I was ready to be

blown away, but then that delivery... It says

you'll never see him coming the predator. What

do you think of the poster? It looks like the

Predator I guess it fits then so not not a lot

of excitement coming out of you Oh, I'm fucking

excited, but then I don't see any jit like changes

or anything different I mean even his gun looks

the exact same Dan the Predator. That's the best

they could do Yeah, I guess I mean the last one

was predators or the predator, you know It's

like I guess it's better like the predator back

in action or I don't know Predator to electric,

you know the chip sequel But regarding the poster

is there ever gonna be a chance when we get remove

away from posters Just copying the social network

poster with the face with white lettering. Is

that ever gonna stop? Is that gonna I don't think

gonna keep going. It's like we're yeah, we're

still doing this All right, we're gonna we're

gonna still do this five years six years later,

but all right Yeah, it takes a while something

else has to be super successful with the poster

and then they'll copy that All right, and then

the last piece of news here because we always

try to fit Star Wars in some way They did a little

boys back reveals some more of the cast of Star

Wars episode 8 I just wanted to get your guys's

quick take on it We already knew that Benicio

del Toro will be in there as somewhat of a villain

but be joining now by Laura Dern from Jurassic

Park fame and quote unquote talented newcomer

Kelly Marie Tran. What do you think of those

two additions to episode eight Dan or does that

make no difference in your level of excitement

for the film? I'm super excited for Benicio del

Toro seeing him in a Star Wars movie but I also

wonder like how big of a part it's going to be

because I remember thinking Max von Sydow's part

was going to be a lot more substantial than it

was so. I don't know. That's the thing. And the

new actress, I don't know who she is, but that's

why I have no idea who Daisy Ridley was. If they're

as good at casting as they were for the first

film, I think we should be set. Otherwise, we

do have the return, obviously, of Mark Hamill

in a bigger part. Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver,

Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita

Nyong 'o back, Dom Hauglison back. Gwendolyn

Christie back it's Harrison Ford coming back

is that no no Harrison Ford in this unfortunately

ouch spoiler alert for anybody who hasn't seen

Star Wars episode 7 You only have yourself to

blame at that point for some type of stubborn

Point you're trying to make for not watching

it and trying to be cool because you didn't watch

it. I don't know Amanda What do you think of

Laura Dern Benicio del Toro? joining the Star

Wars universe. Super excited for the Benise.

Love that motherfucker and everything he does.

Jurassic Park lady. Cool, I'm not really excited

about it. She's not one that just like... Where

have you been for the past 50 fucking years?

But yeah, I think the biggest thing is the addition

of Deltora. I think he makes a perfect villain

type character for that type of universe. Is

she gonna get a tattoo now? Oh, is she gonna

go to Carrie Fisher Road, is that what you're

asking? That's just wrong. Alright, I don't think

so. I think she took a little bit better care

of herself and I don't think she did quite as

much illegal substance. You don't know that.

Maybe not. I guess I don't. Alright, up next

we're going to do a little bit of trailer talk.

We haven't talked about trailers in a long time

and we have had a ton of trailers released over

the month of February. Amanda, let's start with

you this time. Is there a trailer yay or nay

that you want to go over here? One yay, one nay.

Where do you want to start? I'm going to start

with a nay. and go high -rise. I really cannot

get into that. I don't know what the fuck it's

about really. It just looks all over the place

and weird. Tom Hiddleston, what are you doing

with your life? I think it's an intriguing concept.

I don't know. I don't know what the fucking concept

is. It's like a class system and the different

stories. It reminds me of like Dread. I don't

think that's what it's going for quite. But that's

what I feel like. Alright, so a nay for you for

high -rise. Yeah. All right, Dan, a yay or nay

for you on one of them. I'm going to go with

one that came out during the Super Bowl, but

I'm super excited for it, and that's Jason Bourne.

Again, not a very creative title, but it looks

really great. There's not a huge amount to go

on, but I don't know, something about it even

looks different. It looks just the... you know,

the type of direction we got from Paul Greengrass

in the past. It doesn't seem like he's going

for a completely new style with this movie. It

could be wrong, but it just seems like he, I

don't know if it's a digital look compared to

the film of the previous one, but I don't know.

And it's Jason Bourne, so I'm excited. Yeah,

I have that as one of them that I really enjoyed

too. I thought that was, for me, the second best

Super Bowl spot we got. And there was a lot of

Super Bowl spots, and I like that one almost

more than all the other ones. So I'm definitely

in agreement with that one. If I was going to

go for a nay, I have a couple. But the first

one I'm going to go with is Nine Lives. That

looks absolutely void of intelligence. Is that

Kevin Spacey joint? Yeah, where he turns into

a cat. I mean, I guess the theme... We got a

theme going for some cat films this year. With

Keanu. But that one looks like one that is not

something that's going to turn out well. I don't

see how any... Oh, I'm going to see the shit

out of Keanu. I got that on another part of my

thing here, but Nine Lives is a huge nay for

me. Yeah, I just want to know, what do they have

on Kevin Spacey to make him do that movie? Well,

didn't they do one with... Tim the Toolman as

a dog? The same concept? Yeah, but that's Tim

Allen. Nobody's expecting great things from him.

Yeah, he did the remake of Shaggy Dog. Like,

Kevin Spacey's fine. He's doing fine, isn't he?

He's got the TV show. He's got some cards. Yeah,

he's not hurting for money. Oh, he's got bad

gambling habit. I don't know what's going on.

I don't think this film's going to make any money,

so it's not going to help him. Maybe he's doing

it for his kids. Maybe. I don't know. Alright,

back to you, Amanda. You got another one that

you want to yay or nay? I'm gonna yay The Darkness.

Another, uh... The Darkness? It's got Kevin Bacon

in it, the scary movie. Oh, that's why I don't

remember it. Yeah, one of the scariest movies

I've ever seen is Astor of Echoes, which also

has Kevin Bacon in it, so... Looking forward

to him returning to that genre? Is there? Alright,

Dan, where else do you want to go here? Lot to

choose from I'm trying to debate of where I want

to go next, but I think I will go with Good question

I'll go with triple line. I think I John Hillcoats

upcoming film that to me looks phenomenal. It's

a huge day for me great cast that cast is insane

like it's like yeah potential oscar winner potential

oscar winner uh here you know and then anthony

mackey but hey he's pretty good he'd be good

too uh yeah so i'm super excited for that i'm

you know i'm only looking for a good cop drama

and that looks like it could be quite good yeah

that one's been on my radar for a long time i

think that was that's been, you know, in the

works for a couple years now, it seems like,

because I even remember people listing that as

their most anticipated film, you know, amongst

their films last year as well. But I'm in agreement,

I thought that was pretty cool, kind of give

you the feel of like a... Couple films that we

saw I'm trying to think of them but a couple

films back like 2013 with that cop drama And

it didn't seem like we got much of that last

year outside of like maybe sicario So I'm looking

for some more of those types of films and that

looks to be leading the pack So I'm in agreement

with you on that one I'm gonna go with another

nay because I got a whole bunch of nays And I'm

sorry Amanda, but I'm gonna give a big nay to

the boss with Melissa McCarthy. I have it on

here twice. I... it was... I do! I just noticed

that. It's there and there. Oh, geez. You wrote

it down twice. I am not a Melissa McCarthy hater.

I... liked... some of the films that you were

championing last year and I was looking forward

to seeing this trailer and then I saw it and

no, there was nothing good about that trailer.

That did not look like it was gonna be funny

good or anything. This is gonna fuel the fire

of people that hate Melissa McCarthy and you

should not want this to come out because it's

not gonna help your cause. I'm gonna love the

shit that was in the movie. See how she had her

turtleneck way up to try to hire eight chins?

There's gonna be a bunch of funny stuff that's

not in the trailer. I hope so, because there's

nothing funny about that trailer. What? It was

just a terrible premise. A terrible premise.

Okay, it's almost basically the same as Get Hard,

but with Melissa McCarthy, so that makes it better.

I don't know if it does. I'm giving a nay to

the boss. I am not looking. I don't know if you're

gonna be able to drag me to that line. This is

not gonna earn you any brownie points with true

bromance. I hope you understand that. I'm not

trying to earn brownie points. I'm just trying

not to have anything to do with that brownie

plot line that they're going with. I think that

it's gonna be a fucking hit. I was a girl scout.

I'm gonna be on board for this. Alright, I'm

sorry. Nay for me. You're next. Got another one

for nays or yeas, whatever you want to do I'm

gonna go with nays cuz we're on a fucking Nate

train right now and I'm gonna go with bigger

splash Tilda Swinton Yeah, I can see that I was

you know, the cast had me and I don't know about

that trailer. I was on the fence Yeah, a little

bit in the trailer I'm like no this is retarded

I don't know. I'm not gonna pass judgment yet,

but I can see where you're going with that one.

You can pass judgment all day about the boss.

I can. It looked terrible. Dan, you got enough

for another round? Yeah, definitely. I have a

few, actually. Okay. Well, I think this is not

yay nor nay. I think it's another category, which

is what the hell, and that's kindergarten cop

2. Yes. That is the dumbest thing. I've ever

probably seen as far as a trailer goes. I legitimately

saw that trailer and I'm like, is this real?

Is this like a real thing that's happening? Is

this like a YouTube video of like, oh, look how

dumb this would have been. And this is actually

a movie that's being made. I'm still convinced

that that's not a trailer. Like, I'm convinced

that that was like something that was. Filmed

in 1990 something and I somehow got it mixed

up with our trailer list. I don't know that that

can't be real I yeah, I saw it. I'm like, oh

that's so who would fall for that being a movie,

but apparently it's actually coming out Yeah,

why let's just yeah, that's everything about

that was dumb like It's legitimately exactly

the same movie Like with out Arnold, which was

the only reason that movie worked with Dolph

Lundgren like 30 years after his career was ever

relevant, with dumbest jokes, and it's just,

why? Why, like? Was that a dumb plot to begin

with? Is there a lot of people clamoring for

that? Like, you know what I could really go for?

Kindergarten Cop 2 with Dolph Lundgren. That's

what's going to do it for me. Don't worry, because

if that's successful, you know we'll start getting

the relitfuel rumors about a twins remake. I

mean, like, was Vin Diesel busy? Was, like, Sylvester

Stallone? I mean, come on now. I know Stallone's

going to win an Oscar, but there's got to be

someone better than Dolph. I mean, I kind of

like Dolph Lundgren, but, like, no. If you haven't

seen that trailer do yourself a favor and don't

ever watch it just that was awful. I agree That's

a what the hell that's nuts. That's worse than

nay I'm gonna go with one more nay at least for

me and then I have maybe one yay I can do it

in the next round but my other nay will be for

the film sing The musical animated thing with

Matthew McConaughey and a whole bunch of stars

to the cast, but I'm sorry that film looks Looks

like a stupid cash grab for the whole musical

fad of, you know, it's like American Idol's ending,

so now let's have an animated movie version of

American Idol. I don't know. It looked really

bad to me. So I'm usually a fan of music stuff.

I'm usually a fan of animated films. I am checking

out on Sing, unless something comes out that

really sways me back the other direction. So,

no go for me for Sing, Amanda. I'm gonna do another

nay with equals. Kristen Stewart and uh... What's

his name? Kristen Stewart. I'm trying to remember

what that trailer was even about. Uh, Nicholas

Holt. Nicholas Holt and Kristen Stewart not doing

it for you? Oh. Looked weird. It looked almost

like um... Shit. What's that movie with um...

It looked like Shift? Alright. With um, Uma Thurman

and um, Ethan Hawke. Where like... people don't

really have emotions and like all these people

are like genetically created and Gattaca yes,

if I kind of like that movie, but this one looked

like a weird ripoff of it like I don't get it

it looked like a mix of like equilibrium and

Gattaca or whatever that movie was called yeah,

I can see that I had to refresh myself on that

trailer though I don't remember anything about

it except for Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Holt

being in it that's what happens when you watch

like 40 trailers and 20 minutes. All right, Dan.

What else do you got? Uh, so I'm thinking we're

having a lot of nice Let me try to find a yay.

I'll go with green room I think that I'm I've

been excited for that movie for a while and I

thought the trailer kind of really Again, it

just looks chaotic in the best ways possible

and I'm really curious about it So I'm really

excited for green room and I think the trailer

is Quite good and it gives you enough without

giving way too much and just looks like it's

gonna be Insane in the best ways possible. So

I'm not usually someone that likes a lot of like

the Oh, it's not really a horror, but it kind

of has a spooky Not spooky. That's a bad word

too, but it kind of has that real edgy look and

Actually, this is on my list too. This is one

of the three or four that I was given the biggest

yay to. I like the aesthetic that this has. I

like the the feel that that trailer has. It seems

like it is somewhat similar to what we got with

his previous film with Blue Ruin and I am on

board with this 100 % and that's not even with

Patrick Stewart being but in a couple seconds

of that trailer. So if the trailer had me that

much without a ton of Patrick Stewart then I

can't wait to see the actual film. So I'm intrigued

by this one to see the least. I am also gonna

go with a yay, and that one will be the same

one that Amanda probably would like to yay, and

I'm actually, I didn't, when I read the plot

above this film, I thought this was probably

gonna be also stupid, but after seeing the trailer

for Keanu, I'm sorry, I'm on board. It looks

funny enough to me to have my interest. Amanda,

you wanna say something? Go ahead, go ahead.

That's what I wanted as my gay. I'm Keanu. At

first I was like, what? I heard the premise and

I'm like, a cat named Keanu? And it's the Key

and Peele guys? I'm like, hell yes. And then

the trailer was just that shit insane, but it

looked so amazing. We're just chasing this gangster

ass cat through all this gunfire and... I'm like

so down. I thought you were going to be worried

that the cat was going to get hurt like the entire

time. I was. I was like, oh my god, Keanu! Just

like them. I am like, Keanu! She's going to have

the Keanu shirt. She's going to have Keanu everything.

She's going all in on this one. I actually used

to wear a shirt that was like a plain white t

-shirt, but it had like a gold money chain on

the front. And I feel like, I wish I still had

that shirt so I could wear it to this movie.

Speechless. Are you really that surprised? No.

So since I stole your thunder with Kiano, do

you have another one that you want to yay? Besides

the boss, we're going to go with Mike and Dave

need wedding dates. Really? I think that looked

kind of funny. I'm surprised. I didn't think

that would be something that you went too much

head over heels for. You don't know me very well.

I guess not. Dang it. All right any last second

ones that you didn't get to say before we talk

a little bit more about the best Super Bowl spot

Dan One that I'm not sure but one I think will

be Kind of okay for 15 minutes and then get really

kind of tiresome is Hardcore Henry the the PO

the POV action film. I just think that If that

movies like I don't know how that movie is gonna

be longer than 20 minutes and seem to be okay

I get it. I could almost not sit through the

trailer. I think it's a clever point and it definitely

has that video game look to it that it's going

for, but I was almost sick to my stomach just

watching the trailer. We saw that trailer on

the big screen when we watched Deadpool. I kind

of get where you're going with this, but I don't

know if you need a whole movie like this. Maybe

a scene or two, but we looked at each other and

we're like, I don't know if we could make it

through that without having to leave the theater

for a second. It was like an instant headache.

I was like, no, this is not cool. It's an intriguing

concept. I think it'd be better as like a YouTube

thing or I don't know. I don't know if it needs

a full length film of that nature. Well, you

have a main character that doesn't say anything.

So that's. Yeah, my only other yeas were for

Bastille Day. That just has Idris Elba, so it's

automatically going to be ye for me. But I think

it's him and his element. And then stealing cars,

something I hadn't heard anything about going

into the year. But that trailer intrigued me

as well. Those are my only two other ones. Amanda,

anything else you want to throw out? No, because

you stole them all. Okay, excellent. Let me say

I lost you the looking glass. I really like the

trailer for that. So obviously it's a bit removed

from the Super Bowl, but obviously the Super

Bowl has also become like this hub for Hollywood

to just put major trailers out or Super Bowl

spots out for films. We had Secret Life of Pets

get one, X -Men, Independence Day. Teenage Mutant

Ninja Turtles, Jason Bourne, Jungle Book, Captain

America, Gods of Egypt, Eddie the Eagle, and

10 Cloverfield Lane all had big Super Bowl spots.

Dan, was there one that you felt won over all

of those other ones? I know you listed Jason

Bourne as your yay. Was that the best one or

was there any other that kind of took you back

as the best Super Bowl spot? Jason Bourne didn't

give us that much. It was kind of about what

we would expect. I mean, there was not much there.

But I don't know, the best one. Hmm, that's a

good question. I think seeing bebop and rocksteady

did it for you. Yeah Well, I mean that and gods

of Egypt are really going against one another

I honestly like when it comes down to it it might

be Independence Day for me because Something

about that movie looks like it's gonna be good

and I don't I don't know it maybe it won't be

but I just I have it looks a lot better than

it should be. I'm looking forward to it. I think

that one has me the most excited beyond Jason

Bourne, which I already talked about. I think

for me, it has more to do with the fact that

I've been somewhat successful at staying away

from all of the rumors and gossip and trivia

about Captain America Civil War, not to mention

the fact that I'm completely oblivious to the

comic books. or anything else that anything has

to do with it. So I had no idea who was on whose

side and what was on what, but for some reason

seeing the Captain America Super Bowl spot and

seeing the glimpse that they give you of the

lineup of each side, that kind of blew me away

a little bit. Like I said, mostly probably based

on ignorance of me not keeping up with any of

the stories revolving around that movie and who

was going to be teamed up with who, but seeing

that in that way on that Super Bowl spot did

it for me. Even though I didn't see it during

the Super Bowl, I had to watch them all afterwards,

because I'm no longer allowed to watch the Super

Bowl. But not because of you, but because of

work. I was like, I recorded it for your ass.

So Captain America was the best Super Bowl spot

for me. Amanda, what about you? Well, I was going

to say Independence Day, Dan. Jesus. Well, you

know, God's Avigis is still there. You can go

for that one. Don't insult my intelligence. I'm

going to go with TMNT. Oh my god. Are you just

doing that to say a joke? I think I liked it,

it looked funny. Megan Fox can go to hell, but

I'm excited to see Casey Jones, even if he is

green arrow, but I just want to give it another

chance. Being burned once wasn't enough. You

want to get burned again. I just think it looks

super cool. I mean, it's definitely Michael Bay

just puking all over this thing, but I'm excited.

We'll have to see if that excitement pays off.

Not as excited as Independence Day, though. All

right. Got that out there. for the record. You

have to let us know which Super Bowl spot you

thought was the best also which trailers you're

looking forward to you're not looking forward

to and let us know what you think about our our

new way of looking ahead at the predictions for

the box office and the Rotten Tomatoes and if

you're on board with that or if you think we're

doing something retarded here so um in our way

of previewing the month so we're going to take

a quick break when we come back we're going to

get into what we've been watching and a discussion

of the box office king Deadpool. Hey guys it's

Dr. Masolo and Hard Candy Mandy and we just wanted

to let you guys know about another podcast out

there that we both think you would all enjoy.

It's one of both of our favorite shows to listen

to and it's none other than the True Bromance

podcast. True Bromance is a movie podcast hosted

by longtime friends Hiro and Barry and if you

like to smile, laugh, and just be genuinely entertained

while listening to movie talk then this is definitely

the right show for you. Each week, the guys break

down a recently released movie, and not only

do they tie in the movie that week to the beers

that they are drinking during the show, but they

also tie it into a real fun top and bottom five

list associated with that movie. It's a blast

hearing both sides of these lists, and it definitely

makes them unique amongst all other movie review

podcasts. So we definitely want to recommend

all of you guys to go check out their show. Just

search out the True Bromance podcast on iTunes,

sure you could have got the point across with

sound effects not the real thing Download this

show on iTunes or if simplistic reviews dot blog

spot dot com I'm sure your insurance company

will cover that no they won't no they probably

won't Alright, thanks for sticking with us. It's

time to get into what we've been watching, and

like I said, we've all seen one movie for sure,

or within the last little bit, in the last couple

weeks at the theater, and that would be the box

office king, as we said before, Deadpool. So

Dan, quick reaction before we get into it a little

bit more in detail, but what was your reaction

coming out of Deadpool? Positive, negative, neutral,

what did you think? Oh, definitely positive.

I enjoyed it a great deal. It's a movie that

has its issues, it has its problems, but ultimately...

My hope going into it was that I would laugh

a lot and have a good time, and that's exactly

what happened. Yeah, it may be some juvenile

or jokes or what have you, but hey, I find those

funny occasionally, and I thought Ryan Reynolds

was... as good as Deadpool as I ever hoped him

to be. And I remember years upon years ago when

people are like getting this movie, wanting this

movie to be made and wanting Ryan Reynolds to

do it. And it's been such an arduous journey

getting it to happen. And now it did. And it

was just as good as I could have hoped. And it

was a great representation of that character.

So yeah, I enjoyed it a great deal. And I feel

like watching it again, I'll enjoy it more, because

it's so much rapid fire that I know I missed

a lot of different jokes. And sometimes just

the amount of laughter that was occurring, you

can miss things. But ultimately, it was a good

time. Absolutely. All right. Amanda, you said,

I shouldn't assume that you liked it or didn't

like it or whatever. So let's hear it. What did

you think of Deadpool? Honestly, I was not blown

away. I liked it. I had a good time with it.

I think he did really good with the character,

but I just feel like I saw everything in the

trailer. I stopped fucking looking at me like

that. I'm shocked. I thought you loved it during

it. You even said, you didn't even laugh out

loud at all. That is true. Yeah, I just, I watched

it again. Like you Dan, I think I probably would

pick up on some more stuff and maybe be able

to enjoy it. I think the opening credits scene

was amazing. I think the first, his first delve

into, you know, the car, I don't know what you

want to call it, the highway scene in the beginning.

Loved it. I, a lot of this, I just really didn't,

I didn't like it. I don't know. I think it just,

for me it had some problems. Yeah, I'm not freaking

out about this movie. I was super excited for

it, and then I was waiting to be blown away,

and I just kind of wasn't blown away. So your

expectations were just too high? I don't know,

I'm completely shocked by all of this. Yeah,

I think that's probably what it was. My expectations

were super high, and then like I said though,

I feel like I saw everything in the trailer.

Like I knew, I'm like, okay, yeah, I saw this.

And I've seen the trailer 500 fucking times,

so... saw a majority of the movie, I feel like.

I'm going to have to rethink what I was going

to say as my opening. What opening? You had something

in your head? For my opening thoughts, yeah.

I didn't have any thoughts planned. I was going

to say anybody that can't turn off their critical

thinking, I want to try to find holes in this

and can't just sit back and have fun with this

is out of their mind because I don't see how

this isn't, and I'm not saying you didn't have

fun with it, but I just think it's a... I don't

see how you can't have fun and just enjoy this

film out of all the stuff that you watch during

the course of a year. Regardless of, like Dan

said, there's holes, there's little problems

here and there, but overall, I think it's an

enjoyable film. It's a fun film. It's a film

that should make you smile, laugh, whatever.

Maybe not on your first watch. Like I said, I

know you probably had the highest expectations

out of all of us going into this film, so I can

kind of see where it wouldn't maybe meet those,

but... Maybe it's because I didn't have as high

of expectations. I was just kind of going in

It's one of the seven comic book films I'm gonna

see this year and let's see which ones work and

which ones don't but it worked for me It was

funny. I like the humor. I like the opening sequence

with the the text on the screen, etc I like the

car sequence I do have some issues and I guess

we can get into what some of those are and I

everybody's seen this film So then maybe there

will be some spoilers, I guess amongst this conversation

So we'll preface that right now, but I'll let

you start Dan. What were what were some of the

issues? or problems that you did have with it.

I don't know if I had problems, but one of the

biggest complaints I see with people is that

it's like, oh, it's just a formulaic, ultimately,

the plot that is following the same type of origins

we tend to see. And I don't think that's necessarily

a problem, because the thing with Deadpool, it's

that... you have a character that exists in a

comic book world but is self aware of that situation.

And it's basically, I kind of related to similar

to you look at spoof films, like look at Naked

Gun, look at Airplane. Those plots of those movies,

if you just look at the plot story. They're pretty

much the exact type of same plot or movie you

would see in a common cop drama if it or a common

Airplane thriller like with airplane, but it's

the thing is they spoof that well with Deadpool

the difference is the movie's not a spoof You

have a character that's a spoof. So if you need

that character to exist in a world where? He

is everything else's hand happening how by the

formula by the book exactly where it's a comic

book movie where everything else seems like a

comic book movie feels like a comic book movie

if you remove that and make it completely different

that character no longer has has relevance no

longer the point of that character so When people

had that issue, I'm like, well, if you completely

change it or go against that, then it lessens

the effect of that character, which I thought

was a brilliant idea, was bringing in the characters

of Colossus and Megateenage, Sonic, Warhead,

Lady, who is legitimately a comic book character,

and I didn't even know that. Because that's what

Deadpool needs. He needs characters to play off

of, good or bad. I guess my major, I guess it's

not even a major issue, but, you know, the villain

was kind of forgettable, just kind of one -note.

And it was more of a device, which was fine.

And I guess I could see somewhat the complaint

that a lot of the jokes were in the trailer,

but I don't know, the funniest moments for me

weren't there, like the Colossus -Deadpool fight.

I thought that was rather a highlight. You know,

mostly anything to do with Colossus I was a fan

of, and just some of the... the jabbing regarding

the overall production of the film or some of

the jokes. And also like the love montage that

was in it, I thought was quite good. And I was

also very impressed with the overall relationship

in this movie compared to a lot of other comic

book movies, it was much more effective. And

I liked how they didn't try to make a PG relationship

into an R rated movie. They used that. rating

for the better but I don't know I didn't really

have any major complaints like I said my only

complaints is that it's not you know it's the

story itself it's very it's small in the sense

where you're kind of just it's an elongated chase

film in the middle where you just have an origin

story so it like you may not I was maybe thinking

it might be I don't know, there might be more

to it or it might feel like a bigger deal than

it did, but I'm also kind of okay with that because

I'm glad it's not a story that was about the

end of the world or him saving like a city from

destruction. It was really just out for revenge,

which is kind of a welcome change for most of

the comic book movies out there. And you bring

up Colossus, and I'm not going to try to say

her name because I would fail at it miserably,

but... Not the Sonic Teenage Warhead. Yeah, but

you bring those characters up, and I know I've

heard other people kind of cite that as one of

the problems I had with the film was not necessarily

that those characters were involved, but more

of the execution, I think especially probably

from the Colossus standpoint. Amanda, what did

you feel as far as those two characters? Did

they work for you? Did they not work for you?

Or how did you feel they were included or executed?

I don't think Colossus worked for me. I feel

like his accent was too cheesy, too forced. I

didn't really like the look of him all that much.

I think there's a couple parts where I was like,

man, it looks fucked up when he's getting choked

and stuff by Gina Carano, and I was like, oh,

this is weird. I think that... Negasonic Teenage

Warhead. I liked her. I think she was a good

device. I think that the pairing with Deadpool

and, you know, her, that was a really cool relationship.

I really didn't care for his relationship with

Colossus that much. You didn't laugh at the part

where he was breaking all his bones by punching

Colossus? I did, yeah. That was one of the parts

where I was impressed with. With the baby hand

at one point? Yeah, that was... I told you I

liked that whole highway scene that's kind of

included in that point. All right. I think for

me, Klaus didn't wreck the movie. I don't think

he was great. It wasn't my favorite part of the

film. But I think if I'm trying to break down

the only issue I had, it goes back to more with

what Dan was saying about the villain. I don't

know how effective it is to have a hero and a

villain going against each other or our main

two characters where one of them can't be hurt

for them. for the most part and one of them can't

feel pain. Yeah, I was super bored with that

fight. Because then you have a fight that there's

not a whole lot of... it takes away a lot of

the, I don't know, the resonance for that fight

for me because it just seems like it's people

just bashing on each other with no effect whatsoever

or no consequence. So it was kind of a weird...

Weird pairing of abilities for me when it came

to those two characters going to add it So I

didn't maybe it goes to the more of the one -note

thing that you're talking about Dan But I just

it left those fights a little bit lacking for

me I guess It was my only complaint like I was

all in on everything else that happened in the

film for the most part outside of classes being

a tiny bit weird But other than that it was mainly

just the the main villain and I don't think it

was issue of him the actor necessarily I think

he played it fine. I just think it was a weird

It's a weird fight to resonate with somebody

as far as being able and resonate might be the

wrong word but to be able to Translate that to

us through the the big screen and and and have

us with them on that because you also have Colossus

and Gina Carano who are very similar in their

powers going at it against each other. That one

worked a little bit better for me, but it was

more so those fights. Even though they were cool

action scenes and it was cool to see the different

moves and stuff like that, it still was hard

for me to get behind as an epic comic book showdown

between the Deadpool and whatever his name was.

Francis? Francis. I guess that would be my only

issue. Other than that, I was pretty on board.

I didn't really have that issue with the final

fight, because Francis can still be killed. He

can still die. And to me, the tension in that

was more so with the... Wow, if you get her name,

it's Veronica. Her fate in trying, she was the

piece that they were trying to save, and that

was, to me, more of where the tension was. Yeah,

I mean, that's the issue when you have characters

like Deadpool or Wolverine, when they can't necessarily

be killed, they become maybe too overpowered,

so you lose a little bit of tension in that end.

It didn't really happen. And I don't know, I

guess I'm different for you guys, because I love

Colossus. I thought using completely CGI, it

was a little weird, but I kind of bought into

it and thought it was quite humorous. And like,

yeah, the accent's a little bit over the top,

but I felt the accent and the look of the character

all kind of fit and really fit in with the kind

of what the movie was going for. And his play

with Deadpool was a lot of fun. So it was a super

cartoony, like over the top. type of characterization

which I felt works for a Deadpool movie. I don't

necessarily think that same Colossus would work

for like an X -Men or Wolverine movie but for

Deadpool I felt it was fitting. Yeah it definitely

had the 90s cartoon feel but I mean I super liked

Deadpool as a character. I think Ryan Reynolds

did awesome I think the shit that came out of

his mouth was pretty outrageous and crazy and

and awesome I didn't like all the stupid senseless

titty shots that I feel like how many times do

we have to see people go into a strip club? I

really don't care and I get it. They got to use

their fucking R rating to the fullest. I just

think that was stupid Of course she's gonna be

a fucking stripper and all this other shit like

to be fair what? To be fair, that would be your

reaction no matter what the movie is if there's

somebody shown topless. Yeah, of course, because

it's just so stupid. I fucking can't stand it

anymore. It's retarded, but I don't know. I just...

I feel like my expectations were super high and

there's just some stuff that let me down in it,

but I did... I really like Deadpool as a character

in this. I think he was really well executed.

I think he did have some really cool relationships,

especially with the old blind lady. I really

like his relationship with her. Really weird,

but funny and it worked. I like that baby hand

part. Yeah, cool. Just thinking back to some

of the jokes. What did you guys, Dan, what did

you think of the X -Men references and going

to the school and being like... the jokes that

kind of play with that. Oh, I enjoyed those.

I loved the McAvoy or Stewart joke because that

very much is a breaking the fourth wall we expect

with Deadpool and the joke regarding only having

two X -Men because I was so thinking that at

the time. Of course there's only two and then

of course he says it but it very much does feel

like a Deadpool joke and I think, I don't know,

I was glad to see the incorporation of the X

-Men in that because I was sure... That's well

we knew in the trailer the fact that they went

full force with that with this movie Like they

didn't really hide away from the fact. It's in

this same universe which was interesting, right?

So I thought that was cool, too Overall, Dan,

where would you use it? Where would you grade

this one out of ten? Oh, I give it eight out

of ten All right, Amanda I'll get a six and a

half six and a half. I will give it a seven and

a half So I'm right with Dana, and I think it's

lived up to any expectation I had and surpassed

it. So I think it's a lot of fun. I think it

has a lot of rewatchability. I think it's, like

Danny said, it's a breath of fresh air compared

to a lot of the fare we get with the comic book

films, and I fear what will happen now because

of its success, but as we talked about in the

news story, but as far as Deadpool itself goes,

I'm on board, so seven and a half for me. all

right let's get into a couple other films we've

been watching amanda you also made it out to

see another theater release which i did not so

give us the update what was kung fu panda three

like I was pretty excited for this. I really,

really enjoyed the other Kung Fu Pandas. I think

especially Kung Fu Panda 2 really tucked on the

hard strings. I was expecting a really awesome

story out of this one, and I felt like it was

not quite up to par with the story. I didn't

really have any emotional pull, you know, in

any direction, good or bad. It was really...

really visually Intriguing and cool like I was

trying to take in as much of the screen as possible

because there's all these crazy they're like

in the spirit world a bunch and so all this these

crazy colors and patterns and I really enjoyed

all the the boldness of the the color and Had

the look of it. I really enjoyed that and there

was a couple scenes where all these pandas were

just like running at you Towards like at the

screen basically or you know at your point of

view and I was like, yes Come here come to mommy

just this whole village of pandas. So I mean

It was cute, but I just didn't get as much out

of it as I did the other ones out of ten. Oh

I'll go to four and a half for now. Yeah. All

right, Dan something you got to see in the last

little bit. I also got to see Everest the movie

that came out this past year Jake General Hall

and pretty much everyone. Jason Clarke and so

many more other actors. It was kind of an insane

cast. Overall, it's a movie that's been out for

a long time, so I'm not going to go very deep

into it. But I guess what was kind of surprising

to me or a little bit disappointing, and it feels

weird saying this for a movie that is based on

a true story of where people lost their lives.

It was not, did not really have the tension that

I was hoping for or expecting. It just seemed

like, I don't know, it didn't seem. Like it was

missing something. Yeah. In some way it didn't

connect in some way. The sequences, the one that

I kept going back to was the moment with the

ladder and then going up this ladder over the

steep crevasse. But that was probably the only

time I felt any sort of tension. to that extent

where it just I don't know if it was with the

editing or what where it was hard to just get

your bearings over where everyone was or what

the situation was or how much danger they were

truly in it didn't really have that effect and

I know I thought overall the did a decent job

of trying to establish these characters and the

actor I mean the cast is crazy insane though

you would almost expect a little bit more from

how many the power of the actors but it was just

I don't know at the end of the day just felt

kind of forgettable like there was nothing that

really stood out to me no sequences that really

were all that well done direction wise it just

was you know it was what it was I think it would

be better documentary than it would be live -action

film because it's just there was not much there

to really kind of grab onto or really get invested

in. Yeah, I don't know as well like you're saying

with the editing. I don't know if it was a situation

where they were just bouncing around too much.

I don't know if it was a situation where they

tried to give us too much detail on too many

characters, but I too did not feel the intimate

relation or the stakes with a lot of that. It

was almost like this one needed a little bit

of Spielbergian touch or something like that

to get us into some of these moments. There were

so many characters, I was almost... and you were

like they were so covered up and you didn't see

it was hard to even keep track of who was who

and everyone had their own little story and it

was just i got what they were going for and i

think part of my issue was that i kind of i knew

the true story regarding it beforehand or ones

were After it so I kind of knew what to expect

but it just yeah, it was hard to really just

get your bearings over You know, what is exactly

like what is it currently the situation? like

what do they need to do and and Where do we have

to go from here? And it didn't think it really

did a great job of really just providing you

the a groundwork of understanding of just the

Horrible situation they were in in a way where

you just seemed like it was just chaotic But

chaotic to the point where it was hard to really

understand what was going on Yeah, I definitely

think this one did not live up to expectations

It was a little disappointing for last year as

far as how much hype I had and anticipation I

had going into the year So did not live up to

it for me either. What kind of score out of ten

would you give that one? I would give that a

five out of ten All right. We also caught up

with a 2015 film that we had missed the first

time around. I guess good timing leading up to

the Oscar season, and that was 99 Homes, which

obviously Michael Shannon got some award love

for throughout the award circuit season or whatever

you want to call it. I really enjoyed this film.

I think it was an ending away from being a great

film. I do not like the way that this one ended.

gonna say anymore for those people that haven't

seen it I don't want to necessarily spoil anything

even though it is a 2015 release but I don't

always hate when movies end like this but for

this one it just I don't know it left too much

unsaid for me but I think Michael Shannon was

absolutely phenomenal in this I think it was

intriguing it took subject matter that might

not necessarily seem like it's going to be that

exciting or entertaining and I was I was all

in for the whole thing definitely had my attention

so I really enjoyed probably ninety percent eighty

to eighty ninety percent of this film I thought

the performances were great I thought you really

kind of got emotionally involved or Kind of in

this in the situation with these families. So

Me, I don't know how Amanda's gonna feel on this

but for me 99 homes would probably get seven

out of ten How did you feel about 99 homes? I

guess I didn't like it as much as you Maybe like

a Five and a half. I'd say maybe five what brought

it down for you. Like you said the ending I was

just like that's that's ending. That's it there

I think there were some parts where you could

super back it emotionally and be vested in their

struggle, but then there are some things that

just kind of took you out of it that I didn't

really feel were real. I mean, it was supposed

to be a very real -life situation, and I didn't

feel like it was real. I'm not saying for the

whole film, but a couple of things that happened.

I'm like, man, this is really how it's... You

know going down the ending definitely kind of

shit it out for me. All right, fair enough dan.

What do you got next? Uh the next movie I saw

I caught up with the man from uncle I know when

we did our best of list a lot of people mentioned

like that was an underrated movie and I saw that

on like a lot of people's overlooked lists and

And I can kind of see what people were saying.

I wasn't truly in love with it It's you know,

guy richie's movie from last year based on an

old tv show and there's I think a lot to There's

a good amount to enjoy with the film. I think

overall the actors are pretty solid. Henry Cavill

and Ari Hamler and Alicia Volcander. They worked

really well together. I think they're probably

the biggest highlight. And Guy Ritchie's direction

was a lot different than I expected because when

I think of him, I kind of have an idea of what

a movie is going to look like, feel like, thinking

of things like the... Snatch and Sherlock Holmes

and his Sherlock Holmes films and what those

movies are like Much different with man from

uncle. Definitely the style and I thought he

Did a great job of like mixing some really interesting

musical choices and I thought that was really

solid but really one of the biggest surprises

to me was just how Charismatic and fun Henry

Henry Cavill was in this and I'm just like what

are they're doing to him with his world superman

because You see none of that in that but he was

super Charming and you know, almost like James

Bond Ian in a way though. He was American Yeah

It was fun. It was a decent movie that probably

deserved more attention than it did get but I

can kind of see why because it's a hard sell

really where it's not necessarily it's not it's

too it's too kind of comedic and too cartoony

to be a serious film, but also too serious to

really be a similar tentpole movie. So it was

somewhere in the middle ground in that instance,

but it's worth watching. I wouldn't put this

anywhere near the top of the year though. It's

just kind of, you know, it's a standard affair.

I don't think it's really doing anything all

that new or different. It's just really a movie

that's really big on style and letting its actors

kind of... Play these kind of weird characters

that do feel like TV characters, but someone

in a good way where they're just Characterizations

of Russian spy and like American spy and it works.

Well, they work Well, they work off of one another

solidly, but I wouldn't rush out and see it if

you know, it's nothing I think I saw this one

in the wrong state of mind, too. I think I was

a little bit too tired or something because I

just absolutely could not get into this film.

I just I couldn't buy into what was going on

enough. And like I said, maybe I should watch

it when I'm a little bit more rested up. But

I'm not too motivated to do that because it just

kind of like it was just average for me. It was.

Yeah, I don't disagree. Average is a good word

for it. But I guess I thought it would be below

average, honestly, going into it. So that got

you. And like I said, I think what really sold

us were what I ended up kind of gravitating towards

was the fact that Henry Cavill was somewhat entertaining

and I didn't I guess maybe it's just Thinking

his role in Superman and how like mundane he

is in that movie in this he's so much different.

So I Don't know like I'd give it about a six

out of ten five and a half six, but yeah, I'd

be in the same range All right. We just got a

couple other ones. We can kind of go through

rather quick Amanda. What was your take on? Black

mass we caught up with that one finally the Johnny

Depp film from last year Dude looks super creepy

His contacts his look was just it didn't work

for me. It didn't really look that real You could

tell his eyes were dark with blue contacts in

them and I didn't buy his relationship with his

baby mama I'm like she is way younger than him.

I didn't get it You know I this is A while ago,

I can't even think of everything that I did or

didn't do. I think it was intriguing enough to...

I mean, I think if people don't know the story

of Whitey Bolder, like, they would be intrigued

to, like, learn more and kind of look stuff up

about him. I think it was at least... it triggered

some things in your head that made you want to

know more about those characters if you didn't.

But I don't get why they had to make him look

so fake. Like, he doesn't even look like a human

being in that film. Oh, no. It was distracting.

And it was like... I guess I just don't understand

why it was necessary. It's not like they got

him even that close to it. If you're gonna do

that much, then he should look exactly like he

did in real life, and he didn't. So I don't understand

what the point was of doing all that. I think

the trailer alluded to some pretty epic, almost

like those mobster feel that you get when someone's

intimidating someone, or you have those different

scenarios. I don't think there was maybe enough

of that. I think it's a crazy story, and I think

there's a lot to do. It's like a goldmine as

far as... the just what actually happened and

what he was able to get away with and how long

this transpires and all this other stuff and

I think they could have done a little bit more

with it but I do think it was enjoyable like

I wouldn't say it was a bad film I'm probably

middle of the road on this one maybe like a six

out of ten for me what did you give it I'll give

it a five I mean there were some cool mobster

scenes for sure all right and then Dan did you

have any other ones or no that was it for me

okay so just real quick we want to Give a quick

score for this one because I gotta just say and

try to save people the pain. We saw a film called,

is the correct title, Extraction? Yeah. With

Bruce Willis, Kellen Lutz, Gina Carano, and I

don't know who else is in this film. This is

easily one of the worst films I've seen in the

last two or three years. Is it worse than Vice?

It's right on par. They're like going neck and

neck with each other. like this movie was all

kinds of bad and it was like somewhat somewhat

fine like just middling to nothing like going

through it but the ending is awful. Kellen Lutz

somehow wasn't the worst part of this film but

Gina Carano needs to stop. Stop moving your mouth.

Because she was bad in this film. She's a totes

and jelly. She's supposed to be a CIA agent.

And they had her walk away from someone and say,

don't be jelly. And she said, this totes reminds

me of Williamsburg. And I'm like, oh my god.

The biggest problem with this film is the dialogue,

is the writing. It's absolutely terrible. And

you know a film is probably not going to be good

when they're doing the opening sequence and they

literally listed off, I think, 17 executive producers.

There was at least four regular producers, two

writers, only one director somehow. But there

was... Extraction is awful. Don't go see it.

Anybody that tells me this is a good movie is

no longer allowed ever to give me an opinion

about a movie in the future. Extraction is terrible.

Bruce Willis, I don't know what you're doing

with your life. I was sad. I love me some Bruce,

and he's just been putting out some crap. So,

Extraction would get a 1 out of 10 for me. Yeah,

I'll give it a 2. A 2? Mm -hmm. It's generous.

Hey, Calvin Lutz was actually not that bad. Alright,

except for the stare that he gives on the main

menu of the DVD screen or whatever it was. How

can you count that? That was weird. Alright,

as far as stuff coming out here, Blu -ray releases

coming out next Tuesday. We have Youth, we have

Miss You Already, The Danish Girl, Legend, The

Night Before, Creed. That's quite a few from

last year. So if you are missing out on any of

the later 2015 films, apparently this next week

is your chance to go see some of those. or pick

them up. Dan, what do you think as far as the

blu -ray releases go? We're not gonna go over

like the theater releases and whatnot because

we mainly talked about most of them as far as

our, well I guess we didn't talk about all of

them. Coming up next week we have London has

fallen, which obviously you were a big fan of

the prospects of. Whiskey Tango Fox Trot, the

Tina Fey film that I was talking about. Zootopia,

which we talked about. And probably in some type

of limited release, possibly somewhere in the

country, maybe Night of Cups from Terrence Malick

will be shown somewhere. Out of those or the

Blu -ray releases, Dan, which one strikes your

fancy the most? Well, to go back to London's

Fallen, by prospects, I thought it was going

to be bad. Is that what you're referring to?

Yeah. So I love Creed a lot. I was a very big

fan of that movie. But I want to catch up with

the night before. So I'd probably go in that

end because I really loved 50 -50. And I know

Like before didn't get nearly the praise of that,

but I still want to check it out and see and

see exactly You know how it is. So that'd probably

be where I would go All right, Amanda, which

one are you going with? I know you still want

to catch up with one of those films Yeah, I really

really want to see legend didn't get a chance

to see that in theaters But I also want to see

the Danish girl, but I think I'm gonna go with

legend All right, and for me, I'm not saying

that I don't want to see all the ones you listed

but Both you guys listed because I think I didn't

want to see all of those night before legend

and the Danish girl I did like Creed a lot, but

I've already seen that one So I don't necessarily

have to have that's not one that has to be added

to my collection quite yet I'm gonna go with

youth actually I was somewhat intrigued by youth

no matter how much you roll your eyes at me It's

an intriguing concept and intriguing people involved

so I would like to see that one. All right You

did really yeah, that's weird Alright, thanks

You can go to the Facebook page by searching

Geek Cast Radio Network and keep up to date with

all of our releases, all of Dan's other shows

releases, Talking In Circles, as well as the

awards and all this other kind of stuff that

we've been doing lately and some top lists coming

up. You can follow... us on twitter the network

is at geek cast radio the show is at cinema geek

cast mine is at optimus solo amanda yours is

hard candy mandy eyes no eyes dan yours is at

movie revolt all right so definitely keep in

touch with them and then over Twitter, over the

social media, and obviously the best way to join

in on the conversation is to go to geekcastradio

.com, find the episode post, make a comment.

We will always reply to that, but we'll definitely

interact with you on the website and get involved

in that discussion. So let us know what you thought

about this March preview. If you want us to continue

to do that for the future months or not, we'll

try to fine tune it a little bit for you guys.

But otherwise, Dan, anything else you want to

say before we get this one in the books? No,

I'm looking forward to March and hopefully soon

that... Superman comes out so we can finally

stop talking about it. It's bad when that's the

reason we're looking forward to it. Alright,

that is it for us. Be sure to check in next week

for another chance to listen to The Cinema Geeks.
