Kevin @OptimusSolo

Dan @MovieRevolt

Amanda @HardCandiMandi

Hey, this is Greg Berger, and you are listening

to the Geekcast Radio Network. Today on episode

81 of The Cinema Geeks, we take a closer look

at the month of February when it comes to film

releases. We discuss the future of the Hulk within

the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And in the spirit

of Valentine's Day, we count down our top three

film couples. All that and more coming up on

episode 81 with The Cinema Geeks. That's right,

it's episode 81 and we are the Cinema Geeks.

I am one of your Geeks, Optimus Solo. Joining

me today is movie revolt Dan. Hello. Hey, how's

it going? Not too bad and hard candy, Mandy.

Hello. What's up? What's up? And we are here

bringing you a special February themed Valentine's

Day -esque episode of the Cinema Geeks, which

is fitting since... Valentine's Day is the weekend

here that this is being released. So we'll get

into a little bit more about that in a little

bit. But Dan, how's your week been going? It's

going well. We are all kind of snowed out. I

we just got over ginormous snowstorm So it's

great to go outside and then we had rain So it

was a great combination of just was like dry

ice everywhere. So besides that it's going well

So, yeah, apparently we avoided a major snowstorm

that everybody was freaking out and saying, you

know a couple feet at least And we ended up getting

nothing. Yeah, it's probably the most snow I

saw I've seen ever was like about over 30 inches

So it was kind of crazy Yeah, that's insane.

I saw some pictures of some doors that you couldn't

open. Yeah, I live in a sub level, so my dining

room window was like halfway up. It was just

completely snow covered, so it was insane. Nice.

We're going to be doing things slightly different

this year going into 2016 with our practice.

If you were listening last year, you're used

to us starting with box office and doing some

predictions and then going into news and trailers,

etc. We're going to shape things up a little

bit different. We're only going to be talking

about our box office predictions and most anticipated

films and trailers. Basically once a month as

far as what's coming out later that month and

then we'll review it towards the end So we won't

be hitting that stuff every week So this week

we there won't be any box office or you know

rotten tomatoes Traders didn't just conversations

but we still will cover the news each week and

This is the first time we've covered it here

in 2016 so we're not going to bore everybody

with you know three week or four week old news

from January or Things like that, but I do have

a couple recent news stories that I wanted to

put out there Get your guys's reaction first

one. I'm hoping for more reaction on a few two

because I don't know anything about the franchise,

but It was posted here this last week that there

is a confirmation that the Power Rangers movie

has cast its villain a villain character by the

name of Rita repulsa who will be played by Elizabeth

Thanks and Amanda you're already fawning at this

news. I actually talked about that with a fellow

cinephile today and I'm excited and so is she.

I think Elizabeth Banks is going to be super

awesome as Rita. I don't give a fuck what the

internet's saying about it because I think it's

only a few steps away from Effie Trinket in The

Hunger Games, her whole kind of deal there. So

I think she's already vetted for it. I'm really

excited, actually. Dan, are you sharing the enthusiasm

we're hearing out of this one? I just feel bad

for her. I guess no, um for me No, no for Elizabeth

Banks because she should be better than a Power

Rangers movie. Maybe yeah Yeah, I think she'll

be great and I think she's she can play like

really big animated characters as Amanda mentioned

with hunger game. So sure. I mean, yeah It's

Power Rangers. I'm I'm interested in I'm hoping

they are going more of a comedic tone like a

purposely comedic tone thinking like what 21

Jump Street did For not taking themselves that

yeah, I think if I'm hoping that's what her casting

means You can probably do either but I think

she's pretty funny. So it's like you seen like

pitch perfect She can be really funny. So hopefully

that's what they're thinking. Well Power Rangers

I don't think was ever too serious. No, I know

it's a bit pretty serious. Yeah Well, I did for

sure Some adults still take it too serious. I

had the morpher and I met the Black Power Ranger.

He thought I was a boy, but it's okay. Like,

I got over it. You forgave him. Yeah, I forgave

him, but I'm still a little scarred by that.

Well, it was back in the time where everyone

was placed in a color based upon their race.

Yeah, yeah. And I always feel bad about saying

the Black Power Ranger. I'm like, man, is that

right? I don't feel good about this, but it is

what it is, all right? That show would be totally

different today. They have to come up with different

names. Well, the thing is, isn't it still on?

There's like a new Power Rangers show. I don't

know if it's still on the air. No, there is one.

They're running out of things for things to transform

into. Like, they're on frogs now. They couldn't

come up with something like that. Oh, jeez. Yeah,

I know there is one currently going, but I have

no idea what it's about. I'd have to ask Mike

what's going on with the world of the Power Rangers

right now. A couple other things. We don't really

need to get into this one too much, but I know

some people were speculating when Star Wars The

Force Awakens... debuted that there's a lot of

buildup for one particular character captain

phasma who really didn't get much screen time

and people are kind of wondering about that and

most people speculated that well you know she'll

probably be featured sometime down the road and

that has been confirmed that she will be appearing

in episode eight and that's uh... from going

with christy herself who was doing some interviews

and what not so she said that she did not die

in the apparent blast there during episode seven.

Maybe her stormtrooper silver costume protected

her or something. But she will be showing up

in the next Star Wars episode. Mandy, looking

forward to seeing more about that character.

Yeah, dude. I really love her. I think, um...

She's actually really really pretty I think I

saw her in like a cover of a magazine and she

was mostly nude I'm pretty sure and I was like

wow she's actually super feminine looking and

she wasn't wearing her Game of Thrones attire.

She did not have her Game of Thrones or her her

platinum stormtrooper outfit so I think that

she seemed like kind of a badass so we'll see

how that character develops definitely. Dan any

any thoughts on Captain Phasma having some more

screen time, something we just expected to happen.

I just expected it to happen, really. I mean,

I figured, like, it would be one of those characters

that's kind of introduced and then they, you

know, further explore the character down the

line. So, yeah, no surprises, really. I don't

think you can make... You can't waste that kind

of costume, come on. Right, that would have seemed

really weird for all the things that that character

entailed. So, next one up, I got a question for

you here, guys. If you were to look over the...

Oscar nominated films for Best Picture coming

up here in a week or two. Spotlight, The Martian,

Big Short, Mad Max, The Revenant, Room, Brooklyn,

etc. And I was to tell you that one of them was

being turned into a television series, a spinoff

television series from one of these movies. Any

guesses as to where it's going, Dan? Hopefully

it's like a bear attack show. I would probably

say Brooklyn, because it could be like someone

coming from like an immigrant story that you

can continue. So that'd be my guess. All right.

Actually, one of you got it right. And that is

apparently there is a TV deal being made for

the people behind Brooklyn. And basically, The

way it's going to be developed is centering on

the boarding house for Young Women ran by the

character played by Julie Walter. Mrs. Weasley?

Yes. And what's going on in that boarding house.

And as the people come and go, I guess, it's

going to be the line there. And it's a series

that's being developed, I believe, by the BBC.

I guess I need something to replace Downton Abbey,

so there you go. Yeah. So if you're a big Brooklyn

fan, I guess you can explore that world a little

bit more. in the future here by the BBC. I really

like Brooklyn. Yeah, I think that makes sense.

There's probably a lot of stories to be told,

you know, coming out of that house and whatnot.

So, all right. Our main headline story, though,

today has everything to do with a character by

the name of the Hulk. Mark Ruffalo has been doing

a lot of different interviews and media things,

obviously with the promotion of Spotlight, and

as it's, you know, in the Oscar debate season,

as everyone's campaigning for different things,

and obviously another character that he is tied

to is the Hulk, so he's been commenting on some

different things about that. You know, one quote

from him, I'd love to do a Hulk movie, but that's

beyond my control, it's controlled by Universal,

Marvel doesn't even hold the rights to it, so

it's not on the horizon, and I don't know if

it ever will be. However, even if you can't do

a solo Hulk movie, another quote here, we've

worked a really interesting arc into Thor 3,

Avengers 3, and 4 for the character. There's

gonna be an Avengers 4? The article here is saying

that when it's all added up, it'll feel like

a Hulk movie, like a standalone movie. So apparently

he's gonna have a big arc over the course of

those three films and the reason I find it a

little bit interesting too is this next quote

from Ruffalo Taika and I'm gonna say this name

wrong Taika Waititi is coming in and I love him

That's a surprise and it fits part of this Marvel

doing the unexpected casting the unexpected and

now bringing in the unexpected for writer and

director I'm really interested in where that's

going. They're writing the script now. I am thinking

about it I'm doing script meetings and stuff

So we're starting to prep it for those people

that don't know who Taika Waititi is He is one

half of the direct directing the writing team

from what we do in the shadows hmm So him and

Jermaine Clement were the guys that did what

we do in the shadows Taika Waititi also was a

little bit involved He was in what we do in the

shadows as well as one of the vampires He was

in Green Lantern He also did some work with like

we said before Flight of the Concords So Dan

the idea that there's gonna be a Thor story arc

starting in Thor Ragnarok going into some more

of the Avengers films and and just The idea of

this director and writer coming on board. What

do you think? Well for one I'm thinking like

here's an idea Marvel you made like a trillion

dollars buy the rights back the Hulk come on

I don't know if it's a thing they can even do

but it seems like he doesn't seem that difficult

If they're unable to make a movie I think it's

probably the smarter move because they've I I've

liked well I like the second Hulk movie, but

I can see why they're not going that route I

just hope it's not like it's in our movie It's

a standalone story in those movies that actually

makes sense and doesn't feel like tacked on.

You know, like some of the stuff you had with

like Avengers Age Voltron with the random interplay

of some stories that didn't really seem like

they made sense in the actual movie that was

being told. As long as it's like it's progression

in that end that actually it's serving the story,

serving Ragnarok. I like seeing Hulk and Thor

again. That's a good idea. Kind of bringing them

in. But so I'm not against it. It's just going

to be how effective they are at making it happen.

Do you think it's going to be somewhat of a letdown

for some comic book fans and some fans of Hulk

that you're not going to eventually get to see

maybe a standalone film in the likes of the articles

mentioned like World War Hulk? I know there's

some other comic storylines of him, you know,

once he's out into the celestial space, I guess

you could call it. I think the Hulk is always

better as a. Part of a team or part like I don't

know like well Planet Hulk is a pretty great

comic, but I don't it can never I don't think

it could ever work as a movie really Just it

would I well, you know, I just I don't see it

happening same thing with like World War Hulk

To a certain extent, so I don't well if war or

Hulk happened it basically would be in another

adventure So I don't know. I don't I think most

some people might be disappointed But I think

most people realize that the Hulk's better served

with these wet people rather than being his own

standalone movie What about you Amanda? Does

that increase your? Anticipation for Thor Ragnarok

now or are you interested in seeing more about

the Hulk character as it spread out? Maybe over

a course of two three movies. I think with how

They kind of left it in the age of Ultron. It

was intriguing. And seeing how much of a badass

Mark Ruffalo is becoming, like in my eyes, I

guess. I don't know about everybody else, but

I can understand where Dan's coming from as far

as, you know, it doesn't really need to be. It's

almost like a little film and he works better,

you know, in conjunction with people. But at

the same turn, I think most people are kind of

burned on the standalone Hulk movies. And I don't

know how many people would actually give it a

shot. So it's probably a better decision there.

All right. We'll have to wait and see how that

actually plays out. And I know not everybody

is as high on the other Thor films as maybe at

least Amanda and myself are. So we'll have to

see if the third one can kind of live up or surprise

some people and be reviewed a little bit more

positively. That's it for the news stories a

quick quick group of news stories this week So

probably have some more in the weeks leading

up But for now we're gonna take a quick break

and we're gonna be back to like we tease in the

opening talk a little bit about February films

and then also Talk a little bit about love and

Valentine's Day and stuff like that. So we'll

be right back after the break Hey guys, it's

Dr. Masolo and Hard Candy Mandy. And we just

wanted to let you guys know about another podcast

out there that we both think you would all enjoy.

It's one of both of our favorite shows to listen

to, and it's none other than the True Bromance

podcast. True Bromance is a movie podcast hosted

by longtime friends Hiro and Barry, and if you

like to smile, laugh, and just be genuinely entertained

while listening to movie talk, then this is definitely

the right show for you. Each week, the guys break

down a recently released movie, and not only

do they tie in the movie that week to the beers

that they are drinking during the show, but they

also tie it into a real fun top and bottom five

list associated with that movie. It's a blast

hearing both sides of these lists, and it definitely

makes them unique amongst all other movie review

podcasts. So we definitely want to recommend

all of you guys to go check out their show. Just

search out the True Bromance podcast on iTunes,

Stitcher, and all other podcast platforms. And

if you listen via iTunes, do us a favor and leave

them a five -star review. And don't forget to

let them know that the Cinema Geeks sent you.

And this is Dan, and we are Talking in Circles.

Because the world needs another podcast, we are

here as Geekcast Radio's newest edition. And

as the title says, each week we get lost in conversation

about a wide range of topics, including movies,

comics, games, art, TV, and even occasionally

sports. We play games and discuss pivotal topics

like who would win in a fight, the Kool -Aid

Man or Tony the Tiger, and examine the hot -button

issues of the world of geekdom. We keep things

fresh by taking timeless topics in new directions.

We are simply three friends having a fun time

talking about life's most fascinating foibles.

Stay connected with us every Tuesday on iTunes

or at geocastradio .com. Alright, thanks for

sticking with us. As I said, we're gonna do kind

of a dual main attraction this week Partially

focusing on February films February is a month

that gets a bad reputation when it comes to Movies

that are being released and I thought it'd be

fun to kind of take a closer look at that We're

gonna do part of that this week. We're actually

gonna come back next week's episode and even

Dissect it a little bit more But we're going

to take our first look at just February films

in general today. And then in the second part,

like we said, we're going to get into a more

Valentine's Day themed aspect, a top list like

we always like to do. And this time, we're going

to only do a top three though. So it's going

to be harder for us because we're used to doing

fives, tens, twenties, and stuff like that. But

a top three film couples. And I'm interested

to see what route we all go with our list. But

before we get to that, let's, again, start with

the February film look. And this week, what we're

doing Gonna play a little game here and we're

gonna we're gonna pit Amanda and Dan against

each other and What we're basically looking at

I'm going to be picking some years and We're

gonna look at those years a couple films that

came out in February for those years And all

I want you guys to do is tell me which film Got

a more positive Reception positive review and

the way we're gonna grade that is of course going

to the old Stable Rotten Tomatoes to see who

actually scored better So, we're just going to

alternate. There's ten of them and we'll see

how you guys do as far as looking back and which

ones of these films might have got better or

worse received. So, Amanda, why don't you start?

I'll give you some years and you can pick which

one. We have 1989. That's our only entry from

the 80s. Then we have 1994 and 1996 from the

90s. and then we have 2002, 2003, 2004 from that

decade, and then 2011 and 2014, very recently.

So where do you want to go? Well, easy one, 2014.

Let's go there. You're going to go 2014. I don't

really care about the lerve in the 90s or the

80s. This isn't necessarily about love films.

It's just films that have been released in February

of those years. So 2014, February releases. I

want to know which one of these films scored

higher on Rotten Tomatoes, RoboCop or Pompeii?

Wow, there's a Sophie story for you. Pompeii?

Is that your final answer? Yes, sir. All right,

the official Rotten Tomatoes scores for those

two films. Robocop came in at a whopping 49%.

Pompeii at 28%. 28 % for Pompeii. See, I've really,

really been wanting to watch Pompeii. What? What?

I really do. I want to see it. Don't. No, I forbid

that. Did you see it? Yes. It's got Jon Snow

in it. I forbid it. You can't stop me. It's pretty

awful. You don't, you don't, you want him to

stop you. Alright Dan, no points for Amanda on

that one so you get to go here and maybe take

the early lead. I'll go with the 1989 one. 1989,

alright. We have Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

That's my shit. There you go. Or Tom Hanks and

the Burbs. Okay, excellent. So that was the first

Bill and Ted, right? Okay, yeah Man See the question

is I know It's all it's hard to tell with old

movies when it comes around tomatoes because

there's not nearly as many reviews but I'll say

Bill and Ted was better rated the the burbs came

in at 47 percent Bill and Ted whopping 79%. Wow,

that's better than I would not have predicted

that. So Bill and Ted actually had a very positive

review. It's probably, not probably, it's the

second highest rated one out of all the ones

on my list here. Yeah. I actually use Bill and

Ted's Excellent Adventure as interpreting practice

for sign language. Nice. I would like to see

that. All right, so Dan has one point. Amanda,

you need to catch up here. What year do you want

to go with? We had 2011, 2002, 3, 4, 1994, 1996.

Let's go 96. 1996. All right. We have a couple

of somewhat similar films here. We have Happy

Gilmore that was released in February of 1996,

and Black Sheep. Ooh. Shit Man so It's not really

About how it's received in that time. It's about

overall score on Rotten Tomatoes I mean most

of the reviews well it depends on how old the

film is in it You know obviously Rotten Tomatoes

came along at a certain point, but yeah anybody

that's written reviews for that film ended up

through now So happy Gilmore or Black Sheep?

I don't feel good about this, but we're gonna

say Black Sheep. Black Sheep had a 28%. Happy

Gilmore, 60. Fuck! 60 % for Happy Gilmore, so

no points yet for Amanda. Dan, you know where

you want to go next? You said 2011? Yep, that's

one of them. All right. All right, a couple of

barn burners here. 2011, we have... What does

that mean? That's some weird backwoods pecatonica

slang. Yes, probably. Don't give away where I

came from. Alright, 2011. The first film is Hall

Pass. I think we're familiar with that one. And

the other one is a film called Just Go With It.

Does anybody know who's in that film? Adam Sandler?

No, that's an Adam Sandler and I believe Jennifer

Aniston? So Just Go With It or Hall Pass. Which

one was better received? I'm gonna vote against

Adam Sandler because it seems to be the smart

thing to do and say hall pass Hall pass came

in at 34 % Just go with it 19 Wow, yeah, so yeah,

it's always good to me Dan Always would against

Adam so well, I guess you have to go with it

Yeah, all right. Happy post 2000 Right anything

that came out after happy Kilmore Billy Madison

those type of films then start voting against

Adam Sandler So two points for Dan. I mean he

still have time to catch up. So what year do

we want to go with next? We got 2004 2003 2002

1994 Let's do 2004 2004. There's actually two

different ones from 2004. I Will go with this

one. All right, we have 50 first dates So 51st

dates or Euro trip Going with 50 first dates

over Euro trip 50 first dates as a 44 % on Rotten

Tomatoes Euro trip as a 46 % Your trip somehow

has a better Rotten Tomatoes score than 50 First

Dates. I would not have predicted that. Dude,

I even cried in 50 First Dates. I like 50 First

Dates. Yeah, I was surprised. I thought that

one was actually pretty good. I would have thought

that would have been a slam dunk for 50 First

Dates, but... You and Dan. RING THIS FUCKING

DOG! Dan has no idea what I'm even doing here.

Alright, Dan, this could make it pretty hard

if you get this next one right. Where do you

want to go? Uh, what do we have left? What, yours?

We have another 2004, 2003, 2002, or 1994. Let's

go... 94. Alright, 94. We have blue chips...

February release. What the fuck is that? Shaquille

O 'Neal. Shaquille O 'Neal in a film. That's

all you need to know. It's an acting debut with

Nick Nolte. They play college basketball team.

You know too much about this already. All right.

And Ace Ventura Pet Detective also came out in

February 1994. See, like, I feel like this is

a trap because I want to go Pet Detective, but

I feel like that's too obvious. But maybe that

wasn't us. I was young. Maybe it wasn't us. I'll

go with blue chips because maybe I feel like

more people hated Jim Carrey. There was like

the thing that people loved it, but then the

critics probably hated it. So I want to go with

blue chips. All right. Ace Ventura Pet Detective

had a massive score of 45 percent. Really? Forty

five percent for the pet detective. Blue chips.

Really? Blue chips. Thirty seven. Ah. Blue chip's

just eight points under, so you're still alive,

Amanda. Barely. We have a series of 2000s going,

though. 2002, 2003, or 2004? You pick. Just fucking

pick one. I can't. I can't? You have to pick.

What are my choices again? 2002, 2003, 2004.

2002. 2002. Oh, I forgot there's two of them

in 2002 as well. All right, how about this one?

Queen of the Damned. Oh, that's also my shit.

Or the film Crossroads. Is that the British version?

Yes. Crossroads came out in February and so did

Queen of the Damned. I actually saw Queen of

the Damned in theater. Please tell me Queen of

the Damned. That's your guess? Yes. Just say

it. Queen of the Damned, 17 % on Rotten Tomatoes.

Crossroads, 14%. Shit. So Queen of the Damned

with a 17 % somehow wins that matchup. Thank

you, Aliyah. She was helping me out on that one.

Oh lord. Alright, so Amanda's on the board. Those

are two highlight films for the February history

of February releases right there. I do not hate

on Queen of the Damned. Like, I love that movie

so much it's ridiculous. That's unfathomable.

You know how long that I searched for that at

disreplay? Sorry. I have no words. Dan, we have

one more for 2002, 2003, or 2004. Let's start

2002 again, because it seems like it's a fainter

month so far. All right. These two films have

absolutely nothing to do with each other. So

we're going in two completely different directions.

But we have the film John Q, which was released

in February of 2002, starring Denzel Washington.

And we also have the movie Super Troopers. Oh,

wow. I'm going to go with John Q. I feel like

super troopers was another like uh again a movie

that people critics hated but he had his fan

base super troopers has a 35 percent on rotten

tomatoes super troopers at 35 john q 23 really

wow That was the most surprised I've ever heard

you ever, Dan. Like, I am surprised, too. Like,

no love for 50 First Dates and no love for John

Q. I actually didn't mind John Q. I mean, it's

a little sappy and whatnot sometimes, but it's

Denzel. I thought he automatically got at least

50%. This is real. This is real. Yeah, I remember

loving Super True Person College, but it's been

a really long time, so I don't know if it would

hold up. I mean, it only has a 35%, so let's...

Yeah. I literally quoted that movie yesterday.

That doesn't surprise me. Alright, you have to

get this one right, Amanda. What do you want

to go with, 2003 or 2004? 2003. Alright, 2003.

We have the films, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,

February release from 2003. Also, February release

from 2003 would be old school. Oh, shit. So,

old school, or How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days?

Okay, so... super sappy movie for Ram Plains

Day and then Just off -the -wall comedy, huh?

Let's go old school just because I love that

movie more. All right, how to lose a guy in ten

days had a 42 % How you feeling? Not good. Old

school? 60. Oh, thank Jesus. Old school, 60%.

Really? That's only 60%. Still holding. Still

holding. Yeah, I'm surprised it's not higher,

too, actually. All right, so I think we're tied

up now. You gotta keep your composure! So, Dan,

if you get this one, you win. If you don't, we're

gonna have to do some type of sudden death here.

So, uh, we're back to 2004. Again, two films

that are not necessarily of the same ilk. We

have the film Miracle. Sweet as hockey, Joey.

Yes. I'm sorry that you didn't get it, Amanda.

And... Passion of the Christ. Hoi. Miracle or

passion of the Christ? Jesus and hockey. That's

a toss up. For me, anyway. Both are kind of walking

on water. Touché. I feel bad voting against Jesus,

so I'm going to go with that. We've lost the

man. Alright, what was your vote, Dan? I have

Passion of the Christ. Alright, Passion of the

Christ. You can't vote against Jesus. We'll have

to do Miracle first. Miracle, 80 % on Rotten

Tomatoes. It's a true story. 80%. Apparently

there's some hockey lovers out there. It's one

of a mess. And Passion of the Christ, I thought

it was higher than this, but it's only at a 49%.

Really? Yeah. Wow. You're blowing Dan's mind.

Passion of the Crisis is, I thought, relatively

well -regarded. It's the highest -grossing R

-rated movie ever. Yeah, only 49 % on Rotten

Tomatoes. So that means we're into a sudden death,

so we'll do one more round for each of you, see

if you guys can split it here. Alright, let's

do... Amanda, give you a choice here. Let's just

do 2005 for you. Alright. The film is Hitch or

Constantine. Oh, shit. I love that movie, too.

Hitch or Constantine, 2005. Man, my personal

bias is super getting in the way here. Man. Can

I say Constan... Hitch? No. You just said both

films, so I'm gonna need a new word. Oh, shit.

Hitch that your final answer. Yes Constantine

46 % Hitch 69 % 69 % so you have the edge here

Dan last one here we're gonna go to 2014 again

and Your two films are Non -stop The Liam Neeson

movie? Liam Neeson in On a Plane or Three Days

to Kill with Kevin Costner I like that movie

What non -stop or Three Days to Kill? Yeah, I'm

gonna go with Liam, I'm gonna go with non -stop

All right, non -stop had a 60 % Three Days to

Kill 28%. So we're still tied. I'm still tied.

All right, last ones. I only have two more that

I can give you each, so hopefully we can settle

it on this one. Amanda, you got 1999. The films

are Message in a Bottle or Simply Irresistible.

Message in a Bottle. Message in a Bottle had

a 32%. Yikes. Simply Irresistible, 13. Yes. All

right, last one, Dan. I'm gonna go to... 2009,

Dan. He's just not that into you. Or... Or confessions

of a chapaholic. Wow. I... Man. I don't remember

either of those. One of those had Lindsay at

low hand and I don't remember which one. Think

about those two films. No. I think. It's around

that time. I don't know. Lindsay's one of those

Disney people. I'll go with... He's just not

that into you. He's just not that into you? Was

that a 40 %? Confessions of a shopaholic? 25.

So... You guys are tied, and I'm out of choices.

So we're gonna call it a draw. So you guys are

equally great at predicting these f - Fabulous

february releases and well don't hate like half

of those are my favorite That's a true statement

No When what every movie is gonna come out this

year that's gonna be your favorite movie of all

time There we go. Alright, so we'll have to see

how it works next week. We have a somewhat different

but somewhat similar game that's going to be

looking at some more February releases and then

some more February themed stuff. So we'll have

to see if it's legit that February gets a bad

rap for a reason or if there's some hidden gems

out there. I don't know if I helped the case

against February. I think you, yeah. I don't

know if I helped the case against February. I

don't know if I helped the case against February.

I don't know if I helped the case against February.

fan because apparently all his films come out

in February. I like Constantine. I like 50 First

Dates and Old School. I mean, there's some good

ones out there. I thought I liked John Q more

than I apparently should. It still kind of kills

me that Old School is only 60%. That's insane

to me. Yeah. All right. So next up, we're going

to be looking more so at the other side of February,

not just bad films, but that's time where you

usually get some romantic films, some romantic

comedies, and things like that, but our lists

now are not limited to films that came out in

February. All we're doing though is just looking

at general... couples in film our top three film

couples more so in like the romantic elks since

it's valentine's day coming up here and we're

just going to count down our top three amanda

before we get to the list anything that i mean

there's a billion couples in film history so

how did you try to start narrowing this down

to three um i did leave off anything animated

for just whatever reason okay any reason you

need to help narrow it down is fine yeah and

I'm not as cultured on a lot of these romance

movies as maybe is expected of me being the chick.

So this is all just personal stuff for me, what

I like, what I dig. Dan, how did you try to narrow

this down? Mine was the same way, just like couples,

when I thought about couples I enjoy in films,

and like ones I felt like had interesting relationships

in different ways, and I think each one of mine

has a... represents relationships in a different

way, so. Yeah, I tried to, I wasn't going to

put something on there that wasn't necessarily

romantic, but I figured since it's the month

of Lerv, I just kind of focused on romantic couples.

Alright, and I didn't really have too much of

a criteria to narrow this down. I'm starting

to wish I would have maybe used yours as far

as not having animated films, because I have

one that I'm highly considering for one of my

spots. I haven't. Officially confirmed what my

number three is gonna be at so I'm gonna let

you guys go first And I'm gonna take the the

last spot so I can make a decision real quick

But Amanda ladies first start us off. What is

your number three best film couple? I can hear

Barry and Hyrule heckling me from here It seems

to be a common occurrence these days My number

three is Enus and Jack from Brokeback Mountain

played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. I

think that before, you know, the Carol and the

Danish girl and Freeheld and all these, you know,

same -sex marriage and couples have kind of become

a thing. They were the groundbreaking couple

and it was an awesome kind of confusing companionship

and like relationship like blossoming. And I

think I saw this way too flipping young. And

I never revisited it because I was a little freaked

out by at least one scene. But I think that their

bond and the struggle that they went through

just really kind of hit on with me. And who doesn't?

you know recognize them as a famous couple. Yeah

I think every I was doing some some cramming

research for this list and everything I looked

at had this as one of the couples listed but

for me I couldn't list it because I've never

seen the film so I will not make my list. Dan

have you seen Brokeback Moms? Yeah yeah it's

quite good. I thought about them as well but

I did not include them in yeah but uh if we have

we somehow have any crossover between the three

of our lists with like the billions of choices

out there I'm going to be surprised so All right,

Dan, what do you got at your number three? So

I did include animated films and I guess maybe

my number three could be a cheat because there's

not actually much to go on. It's really only

the first 15 minutes of a movie, but I think

it's a really good 15 minutes. And it is Carl

and Ellie from Up, the classic, you know, that

to me is like what the entire film is built upon.

You see there really their entire love story

within the first 10 minutes of that movie. I

think I've heard a lot of people say you know

up that had a better love story in 15 minutes

and like Twilight had in 16 movies and I Think

too in what you also see is the aftermath of

when that relationship's over for whatever reason,

in the sense of, in this case, having someone

pass away and what that can, the effect that

can have on a person. But I don't know, I just

find that that little short film, really, because

that's what it is, is really touching with, you

know, very little words, just this kind of representation

of the life they lived. And I think it kind of

tells the entire story from when they were kids

to their final days together. So I think it's

really Pixar being Pixar. and being able to really

tell amazing stories in only a short bit of time.

Thanks for bringing the fucking mood down, Dan.

I'm thinking about that and I'm all set. That

is probably one of the most heartbreaking things

I've ever seen, especially in an animated film.

And another couple I can't list since I haven't

seen the film. I'm scared to watch it again.

It's high on my queue, Dan. Don't worry. I have

that and Wally at the top of my list. Oh, man.

Well, I would watch up first and then watch Wally.

feel better about yourself. Okay. All right.

Um, for my number three, which I just made the

decision like two seconds ago, I'm not, I had

an animated one that was really fighting for

that spot, but I'm going to leave it off. I'll

use it as an honorable mention, but I am going

to be that guy. I'm going to be Mr. Obvious,

I guess. And the not thinking outside the box.

I will put Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes

from Romeo and Juliet from the nineties in here

because I mean, come on, that's one of the most

classic love stories of all time. And just seeing

those two as young as they are in that film is

something crazy to watch nowadays. But I like

that interpretation of that film. So I will go

with the old classic Romeo and Juliet. That's

actually not the classic. Get no points for creativity.

Amanda, number two. What do you got? Another

film I haven't seen. Let's see what it is. No,

you've seen this. Number two. Super iconic and

definitely something that I revisited a ton of

times. I want to do these dances It's dirty dancing.

It's Johnny and baby played by Patrick Swayze

and Jennifer gray I thought you said it was a

film. I've seen you've never seen dirty dancing.

I've seen scenes Wow I guess this is a list of

shame that we're doing here today. I feel like

that's like a movie you'd accidentally watch

on occasion. I think I've accidentally seen a

couple scenes, but I've never seen it. Shit lives

on TNT, you've never seen it? Nah, I don't get

TNT anymore. Okay, your entire life it's been

on fucking TNT. Alright, I'm sorry. I've even

seen Dirty Dancing Havana Nights as shitty as

that movie was. Patrick Swayze was also, but...

Oh god. So is this a better... I don't want to

ruin anybody's list, but is Patrick Swayze in

Dirty Dancing here? Is that a better couple than

what he was in Ghost? Ghost, yeah. That was also

something I was considering, but I feel like...

What makes Dirty Dancing elevate above it? I

don't know. I think they're more of an unlikely

pair, and they kind of grew together, and I think

they grew as people in this, too. So they grew

up a little bit, too. Okay. Fair enough. Dan,

what do you got next? For next I'm actually gonna

go with a couple that it's a romantic couple

but it's a romantic couple that maybe doesn't

have the Ending that many other Romantic films

do and now I'm not going Casablanca, but I'm

actually going 500 days of summer with Tom and

summer I you know, Josh and go in Levitt and

in Zoe Deschanel, which yeah It's basically like

one gigantic version of quirk in one movie, but

I love 500 days of summer. I find it a very sweet

and honest film but I think the the one thing

to me this gets into relationships on like the

side when they don't work out and the one scene

that always comes to my mind with this movie

is the reality verse is like the reality versus

the dream sequence where you see what he hopes

his relationship is going to be what what it

ends up really being and just seeing how people

kind of misread things in relationships or kind

of overblow, think they're better than they are

and kind of miss out on kind of the negative

aspects of it till it's all over. But it also

shows you that there can be some good things

there too, so I don't know. I think Zoe J. Chanel

and Jessica Lelevert have really great chemistry

together, but also are really great at kind of

showing the... being able to show what happens

when relationships go on for maybe longer than

they should. I think that was back when I had

a lot of hope for Mark Webb and then he decided

to go off and make Spider -Man movies. That was

a great film. I like that pick too. I saw that

one come up a couple different times too. I need

to re -watch it to get more familiar with that

film. I've only seen it the one time and I feel

like I just don't know enough. I've watched that

movie way too many times if anything. Yeah, I

definitely need to see that one again. Alright,

for my number two, since I went so cliché, I

guess, with my first pick, I'm going to try to

redeem myself with two picks that are probably

going to make no sense to a lot of people. But

I'm going to go classic, I guess, with my next

one, because it more so was something that I

think I appreciated for its subtlety and for

not necessarily, yeah, this just didn't hit you

over the head with it, I guess. I'm gonna go

with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, who

I guess I didn't realize until just now was Christopher

Plummer in The Sound of Music. I honestly didn't

realize that was him. I was just looking things

up and I'm like, wait a second, Christopher Plummer

played that guy? Because I'm only used to him

looking much older. But, and Julie Andrews apparently

doesn't look as old as he does anymore, but I

just think Maria and Captain Von Trapp are an

interesting couple, you know, in an interesting

set of circumstances, and it's not necessarily,

like, the movie doesn't feel like it's about

their relationship or about, you know, the romance

there, but it is something that still comes about,

and I don't know, I just like that for more of

just a classic feel -good, wholesome couple.

Amanda, what are you looking at me like that

for? I'm not even looking at you right now. I

think it's a good choice. Man, I don't think,

Eric, you talked about Dirty Dancing. I don't

know if I've actually sat down and watched Sound

of Music since I was a kid from beginning to

end. I don't know what kind of schools you went

to, but we were forced to watch that probably

at least five times from the time we entered

school to the time we actually graduated. I don't

know what our teacher's obsession with that film

was. It was that, and it was... Willy Wonka and

the Chocolate Factory. We had to see like every

year. No, never those. Many other movies, but

not those for my one chemistry class. We watched

Armageddon for a good month and a half. Nice.

I just played Monopoly in Econ. I don't know

what the fuck you guys are doing. Alright, no

movies for you. What do you have at your number

one film couple of all time, Amanda? This is

definitely a list of shame for you, Kevin, because

I know for a fact you have not seen this movie.

Your whole list I haven't seen apparently. And

that is... Clearance in Alabama from True Romance.

I think this is a perfect depiction of love at

first sight. These two fall for each other in

kind of an unlikely situation. And they fall

hard. And they go all in and put it all on the

line for their love. And shit gets crazy. But

their love for each other. Drives this whole

movie and and I love it. How you gonna out me

like that? Maybe out you like that people don't

know I haven't seen that film. Yeah, they do

Talked about it. Okay. Yeah, I haven't seen that

either so I can't comment. It's just a fun ride

to to watch their Relationship take them where

it where it does I'll take your word for it.

You really do need to see. I mean, come on now.

Yeah. If we were doing the, I didn't realize

it, if we were doing, when we were doing the

Quentin Tarantino retrospective, I wouldn't have

made you watch it at least. Could have made me

there. Yeah. I mean, it's again, something that

I want to see, but it's so hard to find time

for all these films. I'm going to, we're going

to have to make like a, we're going to do an

all out list of shame episode and like. Make

it a task to knock certain ones off our list

in 2016 or something. We're gonna have to add

more fucking hours to the day even. Dan, what

do you got at your number one film couple of

all time? Well, one number one, I guess it could

be kind of a cheat because it's a couple that

had three movies to be a couple so you got to

see these three different stages, but they are

so wonderful together and so it can be, they

have a natural chemistry and sometimes it's...

Interesting to see this relationship grow from,

you know 20 years or so and it's a Jesse and

Celine from the before trilogies You see them,

you know, they're first in the before sunset

You see their first initial a little bit first

sight or kind of relationship at first sight

where they basically spend the entire night together

then before sunset when they have another relationship

and then that looking at before midnight where

they Where it goes completely in a different

direction. So you see this entire story play

out and I think that is kind of insane thing

to go through and Ethan Hawke and Julian Delpy

are just phenomenal actors and I don't know there's

just so much to that relationship watching it

grow in almost real time basically and seeing

how they've both brought in aspects of their

real life into this you know fake relationship

or make -believe relationship and it's if you've

not seen the before trilogy which I think Kevin

again nothing I don't think you've had not to

add enough more to the pile but they're quick

films they're only I think like 90 minutes 80

minutes but it's worth it just them I've never

heard anything yeah I've never heard anything

bad be said about any of these three films I

know a lot of people say that it's one of the

best trilogies of all time so yeah just another

one I guess I can add to my 2016 Yeah, it's,

I mean, you gotta live conversation because it's

legitimately them talking for 80 minutes, but

it's fascinating if you're into that type of

thing. Yeah, I'm down to give it a shot. Amanda

hasn't seen it either, so she can't comment yet

on that. But I saw that also on quite a few different

ideas that people were putting out there for

best couples, so I think a lot of people would

be in agreement on that one. For my number one,

I'm... That's going to have personal choice written

all over it. I am going to go with Robin Wright

Penn and Carrie Ells Wesley and Buttercup from

The Princess Bride. That's my honorable mention.

Just because any time I can try to get a Princess

Bride mention in, I'm going to do it. I just

didn't feel like they were together, together

enough. They were always separate, loving each

other, and they came together finally dead. Distance.

Makes the heart grow fonder. Something like that.

I think that's a statement. Or you forget that

you fucking love somebody and move on. As you

wish. But, yeah, I mean, I can't go against Wesley

and Buttercup. I saw it pop up on a couple different

lists and I knew it was my number one as soon

as I saw it. So, yeah. Honorable mentions, Dan?

Got any that just missed your list? Oh, I thought

about, you know, Leia and Han Solo, but I figured

we've talked enough about Star Wars, so... I

also thought about... Princess Bride as well

and that's really really it even I did actually

we talked about Adam Sandler and Andrew Barrymore

and I thought about their relationship mostly

in a wedding crasher not ready crashers. That's

a different movie wedding wedding singer I do

think they actually I think that's a good movie

to begin with but they I had Adam Sandler and

Barrymore down too, and I didn't even put which

movie, because I'm just like, they're pretty

good when they're on film together, whether it's

Fifty First Dates or The Wedding Singer. But

then they did that awful movie where they go

to Africa, so then... Yeah, that didn't help.

Amanda? I had Rhett and Scarlett from Gone with

the Wind. Also... You have not seen that? No.

Isn't it like five hours long? It's pretty freaky.

It's like a day long. Next time I have an entire

day to watch one movie. It's a commitment. Next

time I'm sick, I just want Chicken Noodle Soup

and Gone with the Wind. That's what I want. But

also Frank and Rachel from The Bodyguard. Okay.

And Noah and Ali from The Notebook. We got a

necklace of Sparks mentioned in there. Alright,

things can continue. The world can continue to

rotate. You know what, bro? What? Don't even

say a fucking word about Alice or my honorable

mentions. You don't have anything. For my honorable

mentions, Dan kind of mentioned it already, but

the classic Humphrey Bogart and angered Bergman

from Casablanca. Which I have not seen. If I

had seen all of the Rocky films, I was going

to put Rocky and Adrian in there. But since I

haven't, I felt like that would just be like

not true. The Pretty Woman, Edward Lewis and

Vivian Ward. I actually thought about Keira Knightley

and Orlando Bloom, Will Turner and Elizabeth

Swan from the Pirates of the Caribbean films

just to be different. And my animated, oh no,

one more before that. I had Peter Parker and

Mary Jane. And my animated pick was gonna be

Belle and the Beast. All right, so that's our

look at the best film couples of... all -time.

You can let us know on which ones you agree with,

which ones you disagree with, which ones you

would put in there. I know a lot of people will

probably say that we're missing some classics

like Harry and Sally, but I'm sorry, Hyrule,

I also have not seen when Harry met Sally. So

this is just an embarrassing episode for me.

Alright, next up we're going to be talking about

what we've been watching. We have a few films

that we've seen here in the last week or so,

so I wanted to give us a chance. We haven't done

this for a while, so get our film thoughts out

there. Amanda, why don't you start with one that

you saw by yourself and give me a quick rundown

on the good and the bad of Goosebumps, starring...

What's his face? Jack Black. Jack Black, yes.

He's lost me for a second. Go ahead. Arlo Stein.

Huge fan of books when I was little. I was a

sickly kid, so I read a lot of these. And I was

pretty excited when I heard it was coming out.

Little disappointed in the movie. I think I would

have had a better experience in the theater seeing

it like 3D. I feel like that's kind of what it

was made for. But it was a pretty cool premise,

I thought. I thought it was a sweet idea. I think

that some of the visual execution was done pretty

well, so not anything spectacular, though. I

don't really have a whole lot of good stuff to

say about it. One through ten? Four? Four out

of ten. And I only saw the last five minutes,

so I will not... I don't even think you really

saw the last five minutes. I think it was just

on and you were in the room. That's pretty much

the truth. Dan what have you been seeing lately?

I saw a truth which is the story regarding Dan

Rather's in 60 minutes when they did a story

regarding President Bush and his work in the

National Guard and kind of the fallout that occurred

there, starring Barbara Redford, Cain Blanchett,

Tilford Grace, and a few others. And I really

like movies that kind of center around news,

like networks from all time favorite films, broadcast

news. And I actually ended up really liking this

movie. There are some issues with it. It does

get a little bit preachy at times, specifically

Tilford Grace's character. I think he has a few

sequences that seem kind of out of place. But

overall though, I find it extremely compelling.

Cate Blanchett plays really the main character

here where she's the producer of this story and

what happens is they're trying to get it together

and then there's some fallback indicating if

some of the information was not cracked or falsified

or if... You know if they need to retract it

and honestly, I feel kind of kind of embarrassed

because I didn't even remember this actually

happening Whatsoever during the times the whole

thing that went down It was really compelling

was first time director and I think like he there's

some some issues here and there like I mentioned,

but Overall, I think it shows a lot of great

potential and Kate Blanchett is phenomenal. Obviously,

she's great in everything she does So that's

not really too surprising, but she really fits

this real well and Robert Redford who plays Dan

Rather He doesn't like I think smartly. He didn't

try to do a Dan Rather impression. He basically

was Robert Redford for the most part. He like

he did Changes cadence up a little bit. I thought

he was quite good though. I think he just uses

the gravitas he normally just naturally brings

to a movie and it fits well for that role. So

I don't know if it'd be for everyone. I think

some people might have some issues with its kind

of political stance and things like that. But

if you're into news movies or into movies that

revolve around political stands or real life

stories, I would advise checking it out. I think

it ended up being a lot better than I expected.

And what score out of 10 would you give that

one? Out of 10. Ah, man. I would probably give

it a 7 .58. Okay. That was on my list for most

anticipated films of 2015 back when we did that

and I just haven't had a chance to see it. How

did you watch this one? I watched it online.

So I think it was on Amazon. Not Prime, but it

had to rent it. Gotcha. I definitely am looking

forward to checking that one out. Next up for

us, we just watched this one a couple of days

ago. Yesterday I think and that would be the

film our brand is crisis I guess we'll stick

on the political route here starring Amanda's

favorite lady sandy be as she calls her Which

I always think is a grease reference, but it's

not What did you think of our brand is crisis?

I know you're typically not I wouldn't think

it would be like the style or the genre topic

that you'd be interested in, but it did have

Sandy B in it. So what did you think of the film

overall? What are you trying to say? I'm going

to have explosions? I'm not going to be down?

You're kind of right. I think that Sandra Volk

super carried this film. I think she was, you

know, I'm not really sure what kind of, I want

to say charismatic because I don't think she

really was... a large character as far as she

wasn't extravagant. She didn't do anything too

crazy as far as with her performance goes. I

think that she was an intriguing character. I

felt for her. I was along for the ride based

on what I was seeing from her. I really didn't

give a shit about any of the other characters.

I think the storyline was decent and that really

I don't really care about campaigning and stuff

like that, but I loved her fire about it, and

I loved her arc in it, so it was pretty good.

It definitely had some humor in it, and I think

she was fine in it too. I think Billy Bob Thornton

was creepier than creepy. Oh my god, he was a

classy perv. Yeah, but I don't know, I just think

this film could have been so much better. Like

you said, it didn't do anything to get you invested

in anything outside of the Sandy B Billy Bob

rivalry. Like, that's really all it really spent

time in and maybe her, like, redemption in a

way. Yeah, it didn't even really make me feel

for the actual crisis that was going on in the

country. Yeah, I mean, I find political campaign

and some of the strategies somewhat interesting,

but I just think it was too much of a comedic

take for me to enjoy too much. I would probably

be sitting somewhere around, like, a four on

this one. Yeah, I'd say about four, four point

five. Alright. And then we also saw, just to

switch it up and go maybe to the other spectrum,

we haven't had a chance to talk about this since

we did our top 10 films of 2015, but we did get

to see this since that time, and that was the

film Room. Amanda, why don't you start with this

one. What did you think of Room starring... Brie

Larson? Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay. Uh, this

movie wrecked me. I... I was way too emotionally

vested in this movie from the get -go. I literally

was on the edge of my seat, wringing my sweaty

little hands at a couple of the more stressful

moments. And I felt awful when I left the theater.

I really did. Probably more so because things

like this really... I know this was based on

a novel, right? Shit like this really has happened

to people and you know even recently with that

guy who had all those women in his house and

It really freaked me out because I'm terrified

of getting kidnapped in general like I drive

a van Around with you know two sliding doors

and every time I have to get in to get like computer

parts out and stuff I'm like this is the day

somebody's gonna push me in here and just take

off and kidnap me my own van. It's a It was horrifying

and to see the struggle of Brie Larson's character

and her dealing with it and not dealing with

it well, which was completely understandable

then, but seeing this kid still trying to have

this normal childhood, he doesn't know any better.

It was heartbreaking to see the struggle that

Brie Larson was going through, but it was also

equally as... heartbreaking to see this little

boy deal with his world changing and to see how

how stunted you know his life was and I wish

we would have seen the justice factor that really

would have made me feel a lot better about it

but Man, it's such a powerful movie, and the

performances were just amazing. William H. Macy,

I want to punch you in the face after seeing

you in this, but the movie wrecked me. It broke

me down pretty bad. Yeah, I think everything

that people were saying about this film is pretty

accurate. This is just as good as everyone was

saying it was, and Jacob Tremblay and Brie Larson

are just as good as everybody was saying that

they were. I actually didn't know what to expect.

I didn't even really know much about what this

was about. I was actually surprised that the...

I guess what you could say, the first act or

the first setting... I thought that was basically

all the film was going to be about. I didn't

know there was going to be some more levels to

it, more layers. And a lot of people talk about,

quote unquote, a scene... having to deal with

a police car as being one that kind of just floored

them emotionally and whatnot. And I think there

is some emotional pull to that scene, but there

was probably even three or four other scenes

outside of that that had more of an effect on

me. I mean, I don't get too emotional. And there

was probably at least four to five times during

this film that I was at least somewhat quivering

as far as the lips go. I mean, there is some

stuff. And I think it's because a lot of this

you get to see through the eyes of this. this

innocent little boy and it makes it that much

but I mean that but that part makes it even that

much more heartbreaking when you see some of

those things a fantastic ending of the film I

thought too as far as from an emotional beat

but yeah if you haven't seen Room yet definitely

try to go out and seek that one out it's bring

your tissues and then go do something super fun

like like laser tag or anything afterwards because

I really felt awful when I left but I do think

it definitely deserves to be in the conversation

of best films of the year I don't think it would

have When I put my top 20 blog out there, it

was in the top 20. It didn't quite crack into

the top 10. But again, I had just seen it too,

so maybe in time it'll climb up a little bit.

But definitely highly recommended of the room,

or of room. Excuse me, I don't want to say the

room. Amanda, what was your score out of 10 on

that one? I'm going to give that movie an 8 .5

or a 9. OK. And I think I am right in that same

ballpark. I'm right between 8 and 9 on room.

So, Dan, what do you got next? Well, can't go

much different than Room with my next pick. I

watched the most recent DC animated film, Batman,

Bad Blood. Yeah, much different movie than Room.

That's what you're supposed to watch right after

Room to completely forget it. Actually, no, probably

not, because it's more, it's again, dark, burning

Batman story. DC animated films have put out

a lot of really good movies. This one is not

one of them. It's kind of centers around this

story where, in the beginning, supposedly Batman

dies and kind of goes from there and has different

Batman characters. Batman, Batwoman, the new

Batman, Nightwing, and Damien, the Robin. And

the issue with this is, I like a lot of these

characters that are in here and their interactions

with one another, but it's just the story itself

is just so nonchalantly put together. None of

it really makes sense. It's not really clearly

stated what... really going on the villain is

almost like an afterthought really for the most

part and it just feels like there's just chunks

missing that with with the storytelling and why

things are happening and it in the end game like

the final end game just seems kind of pointless

and it's I don't know it was kind of a letdown

really You know, the action's really well made,

the animation looks good. If you like the style,

I know a lot of people don't like the, like,

anime -ish style, but it just seems to me it

just drops the ball when it comes to cohesive

storytelling or it just has that feeling of a

comic that's been gutted and they just kind of

picked out pieces and then they... threw it on

and made it into a movie, but then without those

pieces you feel like you're left out for a lot

of it. So can't really recommend it. I think

there are much better Batman stories out there

done by DC, like Under the Red Hood or... I like

that one. It's got Johnson Ackles as the voice

of the Red Hood, just saying. I'd rather go with

that than this, or Batman Year One even. So I'd

probably give this about a 5 out of 10. It's

not the worst they've done, but it's just...

It seems like they've been on quite a run though

with you know what you said like under the Red

Hood Dark Knight Rises Part one and part two

and they all these other ones they've recently

in the last like year or two of change focus

and what they're doing is they're making a lot

of these in like kind of Within their same universe

instead of like picking out stories like Dark

Knight returns. They've been doing a lot of these

new 52 stories and most recent stories and since

then a lot of them haven't worked nearly as well

uh the last last batman story they did was like

batman robin i forget there was like a batman

robin story that one was again it's just the

the issue i think is more so the source material

they're coming from isn't as strong and instead

of like going with some of the movies the they've

been making some of these other ones. Though

I'm really looking forward to the next one they're

doing, which I think they're doing Killer Joke,

which is one of the most iconic Batman stories

ever. And I think it's going to be the first

one that's ever rated R because of the content

in it. So hopefully that will live up to it,

because it's quite the story. So it's going to

be interesting how they try to pull it out. Which

one was the one where... Damien's mom gets killed

and he has to come live with Batman. Is that

year one? No. Or is that Batman and Robin? I

forget the names of it, but it's one of the more

recent ones. Rated R stuff sounds like an interesting

potential film because they've never done that.

I don't believe it. Has DC or Marvel ever had

an animated film rated R? It gets pretty racy.

The Son of Batman was that one that you were

talking about. No, PG -13 has probably been the...

the highest it's once been rated. I think so,

yeah. I mean, there's been the Spawn cartoon

on HBO, which is a dear marvel, but no, I don't

think they've ever put anything out to that level.

All right. The other one that we saw, our most

recent theater visit, and I'll let Amanda start

with this one, and that would be The Fifth Wave.

Go ahead and give us your thoughts on The Fifth

Wave. I think that... wasn't crazy excited to

go and see this I was invited to go see this

so I agreed and I think that it man it was kind

of disappointing the premise was pretty cool

I would have liked to see more of first through

fourth waves a little bit more I think that it

would have been a little bit more of a powerful

film if they would have spent some more time

on that and I think they definitely didn't do

enough relationship building so when some deaths

happen you don't have the same emotional response

as if you would have spent some more time with

these characters and seen the relationship and

the depth to that and I think they definitely

just kind of threw in some random love story

aspects uh definitely had like a young adult

novel feel to it as far as like the weak love

story kind of just shoved in there it it felt

like the host a little bit to me yeah i just

i really wasn't sold on this afterwards i think

it was it was a fun watch just for us to kind

of chill and hang out with our friends in the

theater and kind of joke around about a little

bit, but I wasn't blown away by any means. I

thought you were higher than that on this film.

I'm a little surprised. What would your score

be out of ten? I'll give it a five. Okay. Remember

last year when we, at this time of year, we were

watching stuff like Was it seventh Sun and Jupiter

ascending and then we had to watch like the next

divergent film equally You can throw this on

the scrap heap. This is an awful film This is

gonna sit at the word. I mean, I know I've only

seen one film so far. It's currently holding

the worst film of the year for me No, we're gonna

say it's only at the worst, but yeah, I don't

know it's gonna take achievement for somebody

to unseat this. This is a bad film. I agree with

you that the idea was okay and the premise and

the plot, like I'm all about the science fiction

and the end of the world type stuff. Maybe I'm

giving it a five because I think it had potential.

It did have some potential, but like you said,

none of the relationships mattered. Every death

in the entire film you cared no shits about,

especially ones that you should have. They manufacture

some of the most shoehorned love story, cliched,

young adult nonsense into this film that just

completely destroys it at one point. Yeah, I

was like totally on board, and then when that

started happening I was like, okay, I'm done

with this. I shut down. I feel like I need to

spoil it because I have to get it off my chest.

Spoilers. So spoiler alert real quick for the

fifth wave. But if you haven't seen the trailer,

basically the idea here is that aliens have come

and taken residence in the atmosphere of Earth.

and that they've sent the series of different

waves to try to kind of do whatever they're trying

to do. They sent some type of electromagnetic

pulse beam, something that kind of took care

of all the electricity on Earth. They manufactured

a disease that was transmitted with birds to

try to take out people. There was earthquakes.

So they were doing all these things and then

eventually there was individuals these aliens

that were in the form of humans so you couldn't

tell the difference between the humans and aliens

and then they were gonna kind of do the grunt

work of sniping out and hunting down all the

remaining humans to apparently kill them all

I guess but even that explanation was kind of

weird because at one point they needed them to

live off of but then they're gonna kill them

all so that was never explained but yeah so we

have our main star in this who is saved by this

young gentleman, I don't remember who the actor

is that plays that guy. And you know, there's

a love story that comes out of that. And then

of course we find out that that individual is

one of the aliens, but when he saw her through

the sniping scope of his gun, he immediately

apparently fell in love with this human being

and could not kill her. And... So goes the fact

that he is both human and alien and has made

the choice not to follow his protocol that he

was programmed with by the aliens. I mean, this

is the most convoluted nonsense I've heard in

a long time. Have you seen the host coming? Because

that's exactly what the fuck happened. I have

not seen the host. I would give this film a 2

out of 10 for the initial idea and then the execution

totally derailed it. So that's probably being

too nice. It probably should be a 1 out of 10.

This film's awful. Don't go see it. Fifth wave

garbage. I don't need to see the sixth wave or

the seventh wave because they definitely leave

it as a cliffhanger that there's gonna be a sequel

and I don't want to see it. So yeah, I'm jumping

ship. I jump ship with the Divergent series after

the second film. I'm jumping ship on this series

after film number one. So I'm done. Dan, you

have one more, I believe. Oh yeah, I saw the

end of the tour with Jason Siegel and Jesse Eisenberg.

I talked with them before Trilogy, basically

two people talking, and this is what that is.

Similar to that as well. The kind of the one

thing I kind of took away from this, well, a

bunch of things. Actually, I really liked it

a great deal, but I was majorly impressed by

Jason Segal. Like he really took on this role.

For those that don't know, he plays this kind

of writer who, a real life writer, his name actually

escapes me, but Jason... Eisenberg, Jesse Eisenberg

works for Rolling Stone. He goes interviews him

and he kind of stays at his house and they kind

of get to know each other over a period of time

and It's just a really great conversation about

just kind of their lives. It's interesting because

Jesse Eisenberg is also a writer, but he has

not had the same type of success. So you see

this person who has success and is not really

born for it, doesn't really know how to deal

with it, whether you have Jesse Eisenberg's character

who very much is dying to have that type of lifestyle,

dying to be recognized like he is. And it gets

into a lot of things. I do think I love like

the fourth fifth of this movie it does I think

falter near near near the not not the exact end

but there's a certain direction it goes into

I felt was kind of unnecessary but I think it

writes a ship by the end of a movie but I thought

just the dialogue and the conversations that

they're having and it was fascinating and it

shows you like that how better actors that both

Siegel and Eisenberg are than they kind of get

credit for but um Yeah, it ended up being, and

I think it's honestly close to my top 10 of the

year. Not quite there, but like top 15 for sure.

So I ended up giving it probably eight and a

half out of 10. Okay. Yeah, that's definitely

one that we got a couple of comments on the website

too that people that were wishing that we had

been able to see that so we could rate it as

well. But I've heard a lot of good things about

it, a lot of good things about Jason Siegel as

well. It's been one that, you know, it's available

to see and we've just... For some reason, I've

kept choosing other movies to watch, but maybe

based on their recommendation, we'll have to

bump that up a little bit. So I know a lot of

good things have been said about it. We're not

going to spend a whole lot of time on our last

one, because we might spend a bigger chunk of

time once we complete it. But we have been making

our way through the Alien franchise, and hopefully

eventually, obviously, to Prometheus and then

getting ready for whenever that other one comes

out. But we felt the need to... kind of refresh

ourselves on the franchise. We recently picked

up the quadrilogy box sets or whatever at a used

DVD store and we've watched Alien, Aliens, and

Alien 3. So without going into too much detail,

Amanda, give us your quick thoughts on each one

and kind of how you feel that you stack up and

what's your favorite one where we just score

them all. Man, Alien 3 definitely on the bottom.

Pretty cool to see. Tywin Lannister, super young

though, creepy. Yes, I hate that piece of shit

movie. It was so bad. Too many holes, I don't

even get it. We were trying to Google to figure

out what happened and we couldn't make sense

of it. So that's definitely at the bottom. I

think number two was going to be Alien, the first

one. It just really didn't freak me out that

bad. Aliens, the second one. I think that one

was a lot better. Bill Paxton. Fuck yeah, Bill

Paxton. He was in Alien... He's a terrible actor.

Dude, shut up. He was in Aliens 2 and he was

in Predator 2, so he is killing it already, alright?

Just because he doesn't survive, either one does

not mean he's a badass. I had a lot more fun

with Aliens than Alien. I think the, um... Android

was cooler in the second one even like yeah,

I would say that it's aliens alien and alien

3 so far okay, I Agree with you on alien 3 being

the worst do you? Yeah, just I mean even the

internet can't come up with the answer or there's

like 700 different theories trying to explain

the mistakes in that movie which I Don't even

know if the writers are I mean I think that one

went through some production hell. I know different

people were brought in and brought out and this

that and the other and so i'm not going to try

to blame any one of them but it just seems like

somebody wasn't paying attention to where they

were placing things and how they were doing things

because there's not i i've read probably two

dozen different explanations for why and how

it all makes sense and none of them are good

enough for me so i I just think there's a lot

of flaws in the first little bit of that. And

it's just a weird feel, too. It doesn't feel

to me like the same. Even though we had Alien

in 1979 and Aliens in 1985 or six. And then we

get Alien 3 in the 90s? 92. The visual effects

and the CG and stuff in Alien 3 is terrible looking

in comparison. Because they didn't use as much

CG in the other ones, this is when they actually

started to use CG. And I wish they would have,

because the alien creature in Alien 3 is laughable.

as far as how bad it looks. So I would definitely

put that one at the bottom. I'm not as down on

Alien, not that you were down on it, but I'm

probably not as low as you were on Alien. Alien

and Aliens to me are neck and neck. I think the

reason Alien was elevated a little bit for me

because I think they do do a good job hiding

some of the twists and whatnot, especially for

somebody on a first time watch, that would really

be kind of interesting. But I think both of those

two films are real great. I would put them both

pretty high on my list. We've got Alien Resurrection

still to see and Prometheus, which I've only

seen the one time, so I'm looking forward to

seeing the Prometheus after rewatching all the

Alien films. I'm a little worried because that

abortion scene is not good. But yeah, we'll let

you know as we finish it up what our thoughts

are, but a good experience so far, at least with

the two -thirds of the first three films. Dan,

have you seen all the Alien films? Yeah, I have.

Alien is actually probably my top ten all time.

So I look I I was the same way when I first watched

alien and aliens I ended up I first liked aliens

more but as I've watched them more and kind of

grown older I tend to Appreciate they're both

great, but I tend to appreciate alien a little

bit more. I think it's Honestly near a perfect

movie, especially if you ever get to see it on

the big screen Maybe some of that I mean some

of the stuff doesn't hold up completely but it's

just so well directed and it's it's so interesting

to see too that this franchise went from Ridley

Scott to James Cameron to David Fincher David

Fincher. Yeah, like what? It's yeah, it's insane

and a pitcher hates. I think if even Fincher

hates alien 3 I actually kind of like you're

only 3 so and it's Problematic for sure, but

I think there's some interesting thing about

it. But um, yeah, I love alien It's uh, I don't

know I love that franchise overall even like

Prometheus and I let people have issues with

it But I remember liking Prometheus on the first

time But like I said, I'm interested to see it

now that I've re -watched all these other ones

I think that the one thing that hurts alien though

now is that Sigourney Reaver is such a big star

and people are so honest with her But if you

watch that re -movie though, it's like it's If

you didn't have that knowledge, I think it would

be so much better because you kind of see the

progression of her character and how it really

does kind of surprise you and how she ends up

becoming the character that she does. Well, and

the other thing that's kind of cool about this

franchise, too, and I think, again, it's hard

for people to remove the fact that Sigourney

Weaver and she's always about, you know, seen

as that. badass character and listed up there

with Sarah Connor and stuff like that. But if

you watch, she's really not that badass in Alien.

It does a good job of gradually developing that

character and kind of taking her from just one

of the group to someone that at least took a

leadership role to someone like in Aliens that

is even that much more kind of... I guess badass

because I can't think of another better word

But I like the way that they took their time

with actually developing that character because

so many other Franchises like that are they they

wouldn't do that today You wouldn't have a first

film where that person's not front and center

and kick an ass right away Yeah, then watch alien

redirection. She basically becomes a superhero.

Okay, so we have that to look forward Yeah, you

can be wishing you like I wish we were watching

alien 3 so Oh, God. Okay, so we will not hold

our breath on that one. So that's it for the

films that we've been watching. Unless, Dan,

did you have any other ones that you wanted to

bring up? Ah, nothing really of note. Okay. So

that's it for this week. We'll have some more

to talk about next week. And last thing before

we wrap up here real quick, got some new films

that are coming out on Blu -ray here over this

Valentine's Day weekend. And then, well, most

of the releases will be Tuesday right after Valentine's

Day. So we're going to list off the Blu -ray

releases, the films that are being released in

theaters this weekend, as well as the limited

video on demand releases. As usual, guys, you

can only pick one thing, so you can either buy

one of these films or go see them. Here's the

Blu -ray releases. We have The 33, Trumbo, and

Steve Jobs being released on Tuesday. And the

ones that are out in the theater this weekend

as this is being released is How to Be Single,

the comedy, Zoolander 2, another comedy, or Deadpool,

a third comedy in the rated R version. So those

are the three theater releases. And then for

limited releases, we have Touched with Fire starring

Katie Holmes. Well, there you go. Where to Invade

Next, the documentary by Michael Moore. Glassland

starring Tony Collette and Will Poulter. And

Stand Off. That's a thriller starring Laurence

Fishburne and Thomas Jane. So Dan, if you can

only see or buy one of those films, what are

you gonna do? Ah, it's kind of easy. I'll go

with Deadpool. Amanda? Fuck yeah, Deadpool. Alright,

three people for Deadpool. Sorry, all you other

films, but that is where we're gonna be going,
