Hey, Tara Strong here, and you're listening to

the GeekCast Radio Network. Today on episode

63 of The Cinema Geeks, we discuss the movie

news and trailers coming out of Comic -Con. We

give the Han Solo spinoff movie a thumbs up or

a thumbs down. We give you our thoughts on films

like Spy, True Story, and Selfless. And in our

main attraction, we compete in a box office showdown.

All that and more coming up on episode 63 with

The Cinema Geeks. That's right, it's episode

63 of The Cinema Geeks, and as you heard, we're

all here in attendance, starting with Movie Revolt

Dan, hello. Hey, how's it going? Not too bad,

and Hard Candy Mandy, hello. Hello. And yours,

Truly Optimist Solo. And we got a lot of stuff

to talk about. But before we get to that, Dan,

how has your week been? It's been going. It's

been honestly a little bit uneventful. Just this

is about the time my work really gets really

busy. So I've been kind of prepping for that.

We had a little bit of a pancake kick off breakfast.

So I got to spend much of a morning making pancakes

and people actually ate them and did not. throw

up so i got that going for me which is nice there

you go you know you'll be able to make some uh

some pancakes for connor exactly i got that i

got like that i can boil water so you're set

um amanda i know you've had a busy week uh making

the rounds your first guest appearance on a Podcast

outside of the geek cast radio network. What

was that all about indeed? I was the guest for

the review of Magic Mike XXL on in session films

and JD and Brennan were a lot of fun So you have

your first guest appearance out of the way and

there may be some other guest appearances coming

up in the in the not -too -distant future we'll

keep a keep that on the DL on the hush hush,

but Amanda's a popular girl, so she's making

the rounds and meanwhile leaving Dan and I here

to just do the same old thing every week. Popular

enough for Brennan to serenade me with some PYT,

total girl. Total girl. I wasn't sure if I should

get protective over that or not. Watch out. But

if you guys haven't been keeping up with us,

we have been busy here with the Cinema Geeks

and we've got a lot of stuff going on. Obviously

we just had our half year episode come out with

our top movies of the year so far and some other

fun lists. We also have our ongoing top ten genre

series of the half decade from 2010 to 2014.

So we've covered science fiction and fantasy.

We've covered the animated films. We've covered

the superhero comic book films and we still have

a few coming out very soon so we got action,

comedy and drama still to go before we get into

some fun list towards the end dealing with actors,

actresses and movies overall so that's something

to keep your eyes out for and your ears out for.

And then of course Dan and I have been doing

our first director retrospective on Quentin Tarantino.

And so far the introductory episode is out there.

We have an episode out for Reservoir Dogs as

well as Pulp Fiction. And coming this next week

you'll get to hear our Jackie Brown episode.

whether you've been listening or not, now would

be a good time to tap on board and go back and

watch those movies and catch up with us as we

make our way through Tarantino's filmography.

And that's been a lot of fun, Dan. Yeah, that's

been actually, it's been great. I don't re -watch

films enough and I think it's great having an

excuse just to do that. And it's also been cool

just the experience of going movie to movie and

just recording it has been a lot of fun. And

the other thing too is we watch or we usually...

As, I guess, cinema geeks, we strive to watch

as many current films as possible. You know,

you're always trying to catch up on as many of

the current year or sometimes catching up on

the year before. And sometimes it's good to just

go back and watch some of the older films or

films from previous years. And I think the best

part about this is watching all films from one

director, you know, kind of one right after the

other because... It's a good experience and it

gives you some insight that you might not get

if you watch them with big gaps in between. Definitely.

It's cool seeing the progression of a career,

because even when I did it just as a written

review, when I did Steven Spielberg's films,

seeing the progression of someone, it's just

a fun experience, just going from movie to movie

and seeing how the influence has changed, how

one success may lead to another failure, or failure

leads to another success. So that's been kind

of cool, too. Right, and we've got some great

feedback so far, so we appreciate everybody that's

been watching along with us and commenting via

the website or Twitter or wherever. That makes

it just even that much more fun to do it outside

of the fun we have just recording it on our own.

So as we start every week, we usually like to

get into the box office and we'll deal with the

last week's predictions first. uh... dan you

had minions making a lot of money i think what's

your prediction i think i said at least a hundred

million dollars if i'm not mistaken i think i

at least said it would the opening for inside

out which is about ninety million so and i i

didn't i didn't think it was with the second

biggest animated opening of all time yes that's

second biggest animated opening of all time uh...

second to shrek The third. Which is just a shame.

That seems wrong on so many levels. That's like

the Phantom Menace effect, where it's just hype

based on stuff that came before and not reflective

of the movie itself. But you were correct, obviously.

Minions made $115 million in that first weekend.

So Dan's prediction was correct. Amanda, your

prediction was that Selfless would come in at

number five? Yep. The gallows was the number

five film. So a wrong prediction from Amanda

and my prediction was that Jurassic World would

stay in second place. I guess that is what happened.

So top five from last weekend was Minions at

number one with 115 million, then just a slight

drop off to the number two spot with Jurassic

World making 18. Holy catastrophe! Hey guys,

it's Optimus Solo, and on behalf of The Cinema

Geeks, I just want to apologize. As Robin said,

we did have a minor catastrophe this week during

the record, and unfortunately we lost five or

six minutes worth of footage. Dumb, dumb, dumb!

Those dudes are so dumb! Really, Michelangelo?

Dude, it was beyond our control. But anyways.

Let me explain. No. There is too much. Let me

sum up. The first part of what you won't hear,

unfortunately, was the three of us giving our

box office predictions for next week. I didn't

think it was physically possible, but this both

sucks and blows. We agree, Bart, but I'll do

my best to fill in the gap. As I said before...

Let me sum up. So the box office predictions

for next week were as follows. Movie revolt Dan

came in with a prediction about Ant -Man's opening,

and he was saying that Ant -Man will have the

lowest... Opening weekend total out of all the

phase two Marvel films some were probably in

the 70 to 75 Million mark Hard Candy Mandy had

the prediction that trainwreck would beat the

gallows her Achilles heel in last week's prediction

just trying to take out some anger on the gallows

and My prediction was four parts and that was

Jurassic World would have passed the 600 million

mark and by the time the record went out Minions

would have passed the 200 million mark and Inside

Out would have passed the 300 million mark and

the fourth caveat of that prediction was that

for the only the second time in the entire year

we would have a weekend where the top 12 combined

surpassed the 250 million mark. That's something

that Box Office Mojo keeps track of the top 12

totals each weekend, and we've only had one time

where those total films have passed the 250 million

mark, so the last part of my prediction was that

that would happen for the second time. After

the Box Office predictions, we started our news,

and we started with the news story about John

C. Reilly signing up for a sequel to Wreck -It

Ralph. Unfortunately, you won't get to hear Dan's

reactions to that new story, but he was overall

positive and gave it a thumbs up. So that's it,

and we will rejoin the conversation as I throw

it to Amanda for her thoughts on a Wreck -It

Ralph sequel. Again, apologies from the Cinema

Geeks, and hopefully you'll understand and forgive

us. I stand by my disappointed groan. Amanda,

what about you on Wreck -It Ralph? I really enjoyed

Wreck -It Ralph. It took me a long time to see

it originally. I think I just saw it last year?

Earlier this year? Earlier this year. Earlier

this year when we were getting ready for the

animated list. And I was taken by surprise with

how much I enjoyed it. So I like John C. Reilly

in just about anything I see him in, and his

voice equally so. So I'm excited. Alright, I'm

gonna give it a thumbs up too. I think there

is some stuff there that would be interesting

and... like dancing in the world leaves some

stuff up there that you could explore. I know

they're talking about different ways they could

go. I don't know if it would be continued in

the arcade world. I would hope so. But there's

been talk of more of the mobile gaming and stuff

like that to try to make it a little bit more

modern. But we'll have to see what direction

they go. But I like the film, so I'm all for

seeing more of that character and that world.

um... outside of that we have some news on uh...

or some pictures that were released for the ghostbusters

film the reboot film and uh... that contained

a picture of the new car that would be used in

ghostbusters i don't know if it's technically

has a name yet i didn't see in the article if

they were calling it the same as they did in

the regular Ghostbusters or if it's going to

have a different name, but obviously a little

bit of a different look for the card. Dan, did

you see that picture and what do you think? Thumbs

up or thumbs down on the style there? I think

it's fine. I think it's fitting for the original.

It seems that it's enough of a callback to the

first one, but different enough that it's not

an exact replica. I will say, though, thumbs

down on the fact that every little news story

that comes out of this movie, I feel like someone

sneezes on set and then that's a headline news.

But I think thumbs up on the car. Yeah, I'm going

to be the same. I think thumbs up on the car.

It's just enough of a nod to the other movies,

but not necessarily complete. Not necessarily

ripoff, that's the wrong word, but not just a

carbon copy. So I think they did a good job with

that. What about you, Amanda? So everything Dan

said, that's how I feel. All right. Good to go.

I know another one of the big stories that was

making the rounds and having people all excited

either in positive or negative ways was the idea

that one of the spin -off movies in the Star

Wars universe would be about the young Han Solo

as he becomes the person that they would eventually

meet in the actual films that have been out where

Obi -Wan and Luke run into him. So how he becomes

a smuggler, how he gets to that point. And the

news was directly related to the fact that the

Miller and Lord from the Lego movie will be the

ones directing this Han Solo spin -off movie.

Dan, this whole idea, thumbs up or thumbs down,

or just with those directors attached or anything,

any way you want to go with this one. Well, I

think with those directors attached, I have to

go thumbs up with anything they're doing. They

have not... They've proven themselves. They can

pretty much make anything work as of now Though

seeing them step into something that's not a

comedy that that that'll be intriguing and see

how that goes I I will say there is a little

worry just because when you think young version

of someone in Star Wars It's hard not to think

of young version of Darth Vader and how that

worked out. So I'm just hoping that it doesn't

you know ruin the character or It's you know,

it does the character justice. I do think based

upon the people involved, that certainly there's

a love there for Star Wars just looking at the

Lego movie, so that they know what they're getting

into. I do, though, I was hoping with these new

Star Wars films that we would get more of an

expanse of the universe, like new characters,

and I get why they're not doing that to a point,

but I just hope it doesn't become this continuation

where we just get more stories of characters

that we already know, because there's so many

more things out there that I think they can...

Go into then just the young versions of characters

and we just got done with the Rumor every week

about spider -man castings You can start the

train on Han Solo castings and we can we can

debate that every week now for now until the

next year I think the other thing that I think

Brendan from in session brought it up actually

was Part of what he likes about Han Solo is the

mystery that you don't know how he got the way

he did or you don't know a lot of his past there's

a little bit of a mystery to that and he said

that's kind of what he likes best about that

character so he was saying that he doesn't really

want to see the backstory here and I know a lot

of other people are very concerned about how

you possibly cast anybody in such a iconic role

or something that Harrison Ford made so famous

how you do Younger version of that and then it

didn't rocky His son He was like spot -on and

I would say really good casting and there was

there has been a young version of another iconic

Harrison Ford character with Indiana Jones. It

was a TV show or even the beginning of you know,

uh Right temple of doom. So it's a maybe a weak

comparison, but It's not impossible, but I I

understand that apprehension and I'm not necessarily

disagreeing. I kind of agree with it, but I only

with only thing honestly I'm trusting of the

people involved and that's hopefully an update

on this point. I had to go back and forth because

I can completely see both sides. Like on one

hand, yeah, I like the mystery of Han Solo and

I'm worried about the casting and if someone

could pull that off. But at the same time, it

is to me also one of the most intriguing characters

in the Star Wars universe. So it makes sense

to kind of explore that a little bit so I kind

of go back and forth and I can see both angles.

I'm all for everything that they're doing right

now until they prove me wrong and then put up

another episode one and then I will be reaching

out the brakes and saying please stop, stop the

madness and it'll be like Transformers and Michael

Bay all over again. So yeah, I'm thumbs up with

Miller and Lowe being connected to it and I think

that's a good sign. I don't know if anybody cares

but There's talk of there being Warcraft sequels

already. That film hasn't even come out yet,

and it won't come out for another year from now.

But apparently those behind it are saying that

they already have ideas for what kind of sequels

they could have. So if that means we get our

first good movie based upon a video game, I mean,

that'll be great. But, you know, it definitely

seemed like they put a lot of time and effort

into this one. Yeah, but it's not like it'll

be the first time that we're going to get sequels

to a movie that ends up getting rebooted. I love

the trend of sequels to movies that haven't even

been out yet. Just putting the cart before the

horse on that, that every studio seems to want

to do. And then the other piece of news was Green

Lantern getting a title. It was called The Green

Lantern Corps, I believe, if I read that article

right. Any excitement about a reboot of Green

Lantern, Dan? As long as Tyrese Gibson is not...

Green Lantern, yes. Dude, that was going to be

my pick. Not even kidding on that one. I mean,

nothing. I like it when it's fast and curious,

but it just, I don't know about him and Green

Lantern. He'd get me wrong, but who knows. So

what about you, Ada? Any interest for Green Lantern

reboot, Green Lantern core? Only if Tyrese is

Green Lantern. All right, so we have a divide

there. I have no opinion on it. Getting into

some of the stuff from Comic -Con that everybody

has been talking about Let's start with the ones

that did not necessarily have a trailer that

we've been able to see but more of the stuff

that people got to see if they were at Comic

-Con and we've only got to see if it was leaked

or this that and the other so let's start with

a X -Men apocalypse Dan I don't know if you were

able to see any of the images that were released

with pictures of Magneto pictures of apocalypse

I think we got pictures of Nightcrawler and Jean

Grey and Storm and Cyclops and all kinds of things

from the Comic -Con entry for that. Well, what

are your thoughts on everything you've seen so

far involving X -Men Apocalypse? Apocalypse looks

ridiculous, honestly. Apocalypse is one of my

all -time favorite comic book villains. You know,

he's not the most I would say Dynamic villains.

He's pretty, you know survival of the fittest

is like his mantra and that's pretty much just

You know the depth of his character, but he just

looks ridiculous And there's no two ways around

it I will say the caveat that so did Quicksilver

and he ended up being one of the best things

about Days of Future Past so You know, maybe

that's that'll work out but Looking at the fact

that he's gonna be a major character and I'm

not liking his looks doesn't work in Especially

it's weird. He's so tiny too, which doesn't seem

right. Yeah, it seems like I don't know from

what everyone says He's supposed to be you know

an intimidating presence a big, you know individual

larger -than -life type thing and they didn't

they didn't get the biggest actor to play I mean,

hopefully the performance outshines the look

but I think it would have been better if they

went more of a Thanos route because it's that

type of character, but I don't know. The other

thing was when they kind of gave you kind of

the setup in the last X -Men film, it looked

like it was, it looked like they had some interesting

things from a perspective in that... It's almost

like that thing that looks like epic from behind

and then it turns around and it's just like some

type of weird face Yeah cartoonish or something

that was just like I don't understand that He

I'm with you. Yeah. Good. He may have multiple

looks there's a potential because Not to get

into some comic book discussion, but you know

there there's like armor he wears so there might

be Different looks to him depending upon it and

he does grow, you know, you put them in water

and it grows. Not really. But so and I'm guessing

there'll be some CGI elements as well. So it

might actually look better in context. But as

of right now, I think it looks awful. Yeah, I

think that was definitely the worst looking character

out of the bunch. Amanda, do you agree or disagree

on the look of Apocalypse? Yeah, I don't think

he looked as big and scary and intimidating as

you should be. And I think that overall what

I saw, there was a lot of color, a lot of bold

color. really outlandish costumes and hair and

all that good stuff, but you know I grew up watching

the The cartoon on Fox back in the day, and I

just love all the characters in general, so I'm

excited for For this movie regardless of how

I think all the other characters look great.

I like Magneto's like addition of extra color

to his look. I think Psylocke looks just like

the comics, but she's perfect. Storm is kind

of cool with the mohawk. That'll be fun. So I

had no issues with any of the other characters.

It was just apocalypse that I thought kind of

seems a little iffy. Yeah, it just seems so misplaced

because of that too. Like everybody else seems

like, yeah, I can see this and everyone that

- familiar with the comics, you know, saying

that some of those characters are looking like

they're picked straight out of the comic book,

and the rest seem like they're like decent interpretations

of it, but when you look at the whole group together

and then the apocalypse is standing there, it

just is like, oh, which one of these doesn't

belong? I've heard people make the comparison

to like Power Rangers villains, like the guy

from like the Power Rangers movie, he does look

a lot like him, or the Kree from Guardians of

the Galaxy, but I will say X -Men films have

a tendency of people complaining about... the

look of characters starting with the first one

and ended up working out okay. So hoping that

trend continues, because I know people didn't

like the first class uniforms when they were

first revealed and they didn't like the look

of a lot of characters. So maybe within a film,

but this one to me, they're going to have to

put a lot of context in it for it to work, I

guess. Right. Moving on to another thing that

came out of Comic -Con, and that is involving

Deadpool. I don't know, Dan, if you were able

to see the footage. Yeah, the foot -leg footage

of someone from the background with the tilted

camera of the trailer. Yeah, I did watch that.

So what was your thoughts on the tone and the

portrayal, or kind of the first look as far as

what the feel is going to be for this film? I

think the character of Deadpool looks awesome.

I love how, like, the eyes specifically, like,

it's almost CGI. I'm guessing they have CGI in

them, and he looks... cartoonish. He really stands

out when it comes to comic book characters. It

looks funny, it looks a tone of Deadpool like

I would expect. I do worry though that maybe

it's a little bit too much pushing the key where

it could just be overbearing if it's just constant

all the time, like the guy who just doesn't know

when to stop talking like myself. the ability

to kind of, you know, to pick at spots. I hope

it does that, but it looks good to me and I love

how they're adding in additional characters like

Colossus. That's pretty cool. I didn't know he'd

be such a big part, so I'm looking forward to

that. What do you think, Amanda? I've been waiting

for this movie for a long time. I liked him as

Deadpool in, it was, was it Wolverine Origins?

Yes, unfortunately. Yeah, I thought that was

okay. I mean, that got my... From the look you're

saying? Just him as Deadpool in general. And

that kind of sparked my interest. I think he

was pretty watered down in that film, and I'm

glad they got the R rating and his mouth can

do what it wants in this film. And I'm hoping

that it doesn't get too cheesy with the humor

and delivers some good action, too. Dan too cheesy

or funny with the mention of Don't let me come

out in a green suit. Oh I Understand it. It's

throwing the fans of I also wonder if that's

actually gonna be in the movie or that's just

something I threw in for the comic -con audience

a little heavy -handed but that is honestly in

The vein of something Deadpool would say because

he is self -aware. So I think it it's a it You

know, it's an easy joke but I get why they did

it. Right. Alright, getting into a couple other

things. There was a quick news story about Wolverine

in there in his last film and he uttered three

words to the Comic -Con audience and that was

Old Man Logan. Dan, are you familiar with that

storyline in the comics? Yes, I am. And does

that make you excited that that might be the

route they're going with this last Wolverine

film? It makes... It does but it's a hard story

to tell because for those this stuff I'm not

gonna give a huge story about old man Logan But

it's one that takes place in like an alternate

Future where Logan is rather old and the villains

have pretty much taken over the earth So like

they've kind of split up the earth in different

sections But it relies a lot on other Marvel

characters that Fox doesn't have the rights to

so In order for that to work you need to have

like villains and you need to have it like that

That's what's shocking about it or that villains

are taking over and they so how they how they

work with that and With old man Logan, I think

on the surface it makes sense But considering

who they have the characters that they can play

with I don't know that that makes that that to

me seems Questionable because one like Hawkeye

is a huge element of that movie. He obviously

can't be in the comics they can maybe to replace

him with someone else, but I don't know. I don't

know how it's gonna work considering the rights

issues and things like that. Yeah, and since

I don't know anything about that storyline, I

can't put too much info or too much insight into

that, but I'll take your word on that. That seems

like something that could be interesting, but

it would take some work to pull off. Amanda,

are you excited about another Wolverine film

and one more Hugh Jackman turn? Yeah, I'm all

about Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. I think the

first X -Men movie with him as Wolverine hooked

me in and so I was a sucker for even origins

and all that. I like anything X -Men. I'm all

about me. It's me and power. She's part mute.

And I'm redhead. Probably the biggest two trailers

and stories coming out of Comic -Con outside

of the fact that Marvel wasn't even... there

basically so it was kind of DC dominated but

let's start with the Batman vs Superman Dawn

of Justice and the trailer that was released

with that I'm interested to hear what your guys

opinions are because I've heard a lot of different

opinions on this trailer and I kind of know where

I stand but Dan what was your take on that trailer?

I had a mixed reaction I think it's better than

the first one I came out I would say But there

are certain things about it that worry me, starting

with Jesse Eisenberg, in that... I don't know,

it doesn't... I was one of the people that was

a very big support of him as Lex Luthor, but

the direction that they're going, it doesn't

fit for me. It seems a little bit odd. It doesn't

seem like Lex Luthor. It seems more like the

Riddler. But I am excited for the... The showdown

between those two characters. It does have me

pumped in that realm like the difference Them

face to face. I love the shot of like Batman

and on top of the batmobile and Superman there.

So that was kind of cool but It does seem like

it's also gonna be really dense movie because

there's a lot going on but overall I had a positive

reaction but Some new new revelations came where

maybe a little bit worried, because mostly it

was Jesse Eisenberg. What about you, Amanda?

Overall positive or negative reaction to that

trailer? I'd say overall positive. I agree that

Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor is a little off,

and I would agree also that he's more along the

Riddler character vein. So I'm not really sure

what to think about that yet. I have to see more

of him as a rich, intelligent villain. But as

far as, like Dan said, the showdown between the

two of them, I'm pretty stoked about that. We've

been waiting for a long time for that. I think

the only thing that I'm trying to get over is

the new bat suit, how it looks. It just looks

too clunky and it makes him look a lot bigger

than he, like Ben Affleck is. From what I'm seeing,

he looks a lot more trim, obviously, than that

big suit. So I don't know what's going on with

that, is it because he's older? This little extra

padding for the punches from Superman. Yeah,

that's just what... I mean, I understand they

would have had to fortify him a little bit, I

guess, to make the fights, the fist fighting

between them, be a little bit more believable.

But once I see it, I'll probably be able to get

past it. You know, I never had a problem with

any of the pictures that came out or any of the

art about any of the Batman stuff, like some

people did. You know, I thought it all looked

decent in the images and whatnot. But I admit,

seeing it in the trailer had me take a step back.

And I was like, well, wait a second. I think

you kind of hit it on the head. That one suit

that he's wearing looks like he's not even going

to be able to walk in it. it seems super clunky

and I don't know if they you know the face part

was done as well as I thought it was when it

was just the images yeah but I agree Dan the

showdown between those two looks appealing I

guess my biggest thing for this is I like kinda

going back to what Zack Snyder was saying to

people that were being so hard on Man of Steel.

I like that this is basically saying like all

the people that were up in arms that Superman

can't kill people and Superman wouldn't destroy

civilization and this that and the other. It's

almost like they were just getting excited too

early in my opinion because this movie is directly

touching on that and it's dealing with that in

a way that I think is intriguing and I think

it works. I don't know, I like that they're kind

of not caving into that as much as saying more

so that it was like, that's part of the development

of this story that we've been doing. You guys

just kind of jumped the gun and got your panties

in a bundle, maybe, Dan? I don't know. I don't

know how you feel about it. My interpretation,

I wonder if that was reactionary. I don't get

the sense that that was the original plan. I

mean, that's just... Of course don't really know

but considering like after man of steel They've

changed course because that was the original

idea was supposed to have man of steel 2 and

then it became this so I I think The where they're

going is certainly a reaction to that criticism,

which I don't think is a bad thing I think that's

kind of a cool thing to do is like, okay Here's

your issue and we're gonna deal with it within

a movie sense and that could lead to some good

storytelling Maybe that's just it. Maybe maybe

I'm just happy that they're dealing with it regardless

of if it was their plan or not Originally. Yeah,

like I never really had an issue with the whole

day He should take him out of a city thing or

the death thing like that was never a problem

for me I had issues with Man of Steel, but the

some of the things became a little bit ridiculous

i would say some of the complaints regarding

the the betrayal of superman i thought was people

got really like really uh the overreaction i

would think to a certain extent i think a lot

of the criticisms criticisms were just in certain

portrayals but i did have some of a question

regarding how like uh Martha Kent, like in her

spiel, that to me seems kind of odd, too. You

don't really have to be a hero. I don't understand

why they have to make his parents be kind of

jerks. It's like, you can just let them all die.

It's like, what's wrong with you? I kind of like

what she said, though. You don't owe this planet

anything. And I kind of like that view on it.

It kind of took me back a little bit. I get it

to a point, but... Kind of threw me off a little

bit too, but nothing Nothing threw me off in

this isn't much as like you guys said Jesse Eisenberg

I don't this might be something that I can't

get over in this film if this is not done right

I mean, I don't know I think everything else

could be done right in this film and that would

still probably bug me if I can't Yeah, and are

we first character agreement? That's supposed

to be awake because I am assuming that's supposed

to be awake because if it's not supposed to be

awake I don't know what's going on We can hope,

you know, let's wait and see the final product,

I guess, before we judge anything, but man. Hey,

who does that? That's not good. Who does that?

Speaking of judging products before they're out,

let's talk about the other trailer that came

out of Comic -Con, probably the biggest one that

I think I heard the most buzz about, and that

would be the Suicide Squad trailer that was leaked

first, which then forced them, I guess, forced

their hand to put out an actual... quality -style

version of the suicide squad trailer. I'll start

with you again, Dan. What did you think of the

take of that and the looks and the feel of some

of those characters that are involved there?

I think it looks and feels very much consistent

with the universe that they're building with

DC, but I think it makes much more sense with

these characters. I know there's been a lot of

debate regarding Jared Leto as Joker and Harley

Quinn as, not Harley Quinn, but Margaret Robbie

as Harley Quinn, but I like them both. I'm really

intrigued for them. I think they're going to

be the best thing about the film. Overall, I

liked it. There are certain characters. I still

think Killer Croc looks ridiculous. And Will

Smith, I think, was fine in it. It's weird seeing

him as not the main star, as one piece of an

ensemble. Not that that's a bad thing. I think

that's kind of... Maybe that's Will Smith kind

of realizing that, okay, I don't need to be the

head honcho. I can be a side player, which would

be kind of cool, but still just weird seeing

him in this as just a guy. Just like he's just

one of the seven pieces. I know I'm a big Will

Smith fan, but I question the casting of him

in this a little bit. Not at first, but when

you see the whole ensemble, I think it's an odd

choice to put somebody with such... You know

recognizable a face, you know such an egg such

a famous Individual in that group not saying

the other ones aren't famous, but they're maybe

not as as common as Will Smith is, like everybody

knows who that is, and I think some people, that

makes it hard, like you said, to have him fit

into this group of somewhat of people that have

more done supporting roles, and even the ones

that have done leads, it's been smaller things.

So I don't know, it almost seems a little bit

misplaced, but I'm hoping that it'll work in

the long run, but I'm with you, I 100 % am behind

Jared Leto and Margot Robbie and those. And those

two characters, I think that really worked. And

I like the tone of the trailer overall. Yeah,

and I think the part, the issue with Will Smith

is that he's so likeable just to begin with.

I think he has a likeable presence. So him being

kind of a seedy criminal, it's hard to take just

in trailer form. But maybe if we see the character

in action within the film, it might make more

sense. Although he did play the devil last year

in the film. He did. I missed that, unfortunately.

So I can't really... No, not unfortunately. What

was that? A giant piece of oshi. We did watch

that though, I know. I think it made JD's number

one worst film of last year, or whatever year

it came out. All right, so anything else from

Comic -Con, Dan, that we didn't bring up that

you think we should mention? No, I think regarding

movies, that's pretty much all I got. Okay, there

were a few other trailers that came out this

past week. We had The Finest Hours starring Eric

Bana and Chris Pine. We had Goosebumps with Jack

Black. Another trailer for Southpaw. I guess

I should not mention Elvin in the Chipmunks film.

Why? Why is that still going on? Why? I don't

know. Who watches that? Really, does it make

any money? It does. It makes lots of money. I

don't get it. I don't get it at all. The Bridge

of Spies, the international trailer for the Steven

Spielberg Tom Hanks film. The Hell Within from

which guy? Splash. Splash. Miss You Already starring

Drew Barrymore. Brooklyn with... Don Hogg, Lee

Sin, and Sorcerer Ronan? Did I say Ronan? I don't

know. The Red Band trailer for Sinister 2, Owen

Wilson and Jennifer Aniston amongst others, and

she's funny that way. The man from Uncle. Another

Fantastic Four, we had Amy Poehler and Tina Fey

in Sisters, and Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley

Cooper's film Joy with that first trailer. Outside

of the ones we already talked about with Comic

-Con, Dan, if you could bring up one in a positive

or negative yay or nay style, which one would

it be? I'll go with The Man from Uncle. I'm guessing

you might talk about Joy, so I'll go with that

one. I like Guy Ritchie a lot and I was looking

forward to this film, but I was just super underwhelmed

with the trailer overall. It just seemed kind

of, I know nothing of the property it's based

off of, but my first impression was just like

it seemed rather cliche and not all that. Intriguing

and nothing really bad it really gravitated or

I don't really see guy Richie within that movie

like Seeing what really appealed in the Sherlock

films or snatch It doesn't seem like that seems

like that guy Richie doesn't exist anymore at

least with this movie Which I'm somewhat disappointed

by maybe we'll see more in the actual film, but

the trailer itself was unfortunately a disappointment

yeah, I agree like That's based on a TV series

and the trailer seemed like more that it was

a trailer for an entire TV series. Like it was,

I don't know if it was the longest trailer I

watched this week, but it sure seemed like it.

And it seemed like there was enough events happening

in the trailer to cover like at least 13 episodes.

I was having trouble wrapping my head around

the fact that this was a trailer for one film.

And I don't know how long this film is going

to be, but if it's only like a hour and a half

or a two hour movie, I think we saw. a lot of

different things that are going on there in that

two hours. I don't think we missed too many parts.

So yeah, I couldn't get behind that one either.

Before I go though, Amanda, which one would you

put either a yay or a nay on out of that group?

I'm going to give a tentative yay to Goosebumps.

Just, I think that's personal for me because

I grew up reading all the Goosebumps books and

I have high hopes for this. Jack Black, don't

let me down. All right, and I'm torn between

two Joy and Bridge of Spies would be the two

that I was kind of most intrigued by I'll go

with Joy though That one I think I gotta wait

and see on another trailer I was I saw enough

that I see you know the familiar faces of Jennifer

Lawrence Bradley Cooper Robert De Niro etc Which

I've liked those combinations before not Serena

notwithstanding but That trailer seemed a little

bit all over the place, so I think I almost need

to see another trailer before I can fully Judge

that one whereas bridge of spies I've been hooked

on that since day one and nothing I've seen has

turned me away from that one yet So I would give

a yay for the international trailer a bridge

of spies I'm the same way with Jory like I don't

even I that's kind of why I didn't go to that

one because I don't really have a yay or nay

it's just that happened and I don't Didn't look

at me and she was like, what did we just watch?

Yeah, that didn't give me much like you and I

think I okay like I Don't even know if this is

a comedy action drama what it might be. I can't

even pick the genre of it I've not been I've

enjoyed the movies David or also has done with

American Hustle and Civil Alliance playbook,

but I haven't loved them as much as a lot of

other people like so I'm looking forward to it,

but The trailer didn't really give me anything

at all, which is not a bad thing. I don't mind

trailers not giving you too much, but this was

almost like a teaser to the trailer that might

be coming later. Right, it was definitely a hard

one to wrap your head around so but we'll have

to let everybody else Let us know what you guys

thought of some of these trailers what you guys

thought about the comic -con news the trailers

coming out of that Or any of these other trailers

that we did or did not talk about let us know

which ones you're excited for or which ones You're

not excited for we're gonna take a quick break

and when we come back We'll get into our main

attraction a box office showdown as well as some

comments on movies that we've been seeing And

Alright, and welcome back and today we're going

to play a brand new game. Hopefully it works

out well, we'll see how it goes. It's called

Box Office Showdown. It's simple to the point

and it's simply that I will be giving Amanda

and Kevin two films and their job is to try to

determine which movie made more. We have movies

from the 80s, we have movies from the 90s, and

I guess movies from the aughts or the early 2000s,

whatever you want to call it. this is interesting

because we were talking about uh... uh... i don't

know if it was last week or the week before or

whatever about it must have been in the retrospective

how you kind of look back at films from your

childhood and you sometimes you can get really

surprised as to what worked and what didn't work

at the box office because you're just used to

the movies you loved as a kid and it could have

been something that made nothing exactly we'll

see some surprises here and there is one wild

card Yeah, and that's one that has three choices

if you get one right you get one point But if

you get one of those triple scores, it's going

to Double your score or basically give you two

points instead of one to make a little bit more

fun here So I think it's only fair if ladies

go first. I think you agree with that, right?

Yes. Okay, so Mendo I what I need from you is

basically to choose Would you want a movie from

the 80s or choice from the 80s the 90s or the

2000s? The 90s. The 90s, okay. These two films

were released in the year 1997. In each one of

these little categories there is kind of a theme.

So for this one we have let's just say movies

gone bad but so bad that they're good. And my

question for you is which of these two films

made more? The infamous Batman and Robin or Con

Air? What's your brain thinking on this one?

How are you rationalizing it? I want to say Batman

and Robin just because I love it. I don't hate

it. Conairs, I feel like it's a staple as well.

So you going Batman and Robin? I'm gonna go Batman

and Robin. Well, Batman and Robin made 107 million

dollars good enough for 12th place in 1997. Conair

made one hundred and one dollars for good for

15th place. So you're correct Batman and Robin

didn't make more in 1997 No, so think about that

for a second that Batman and Robin made on hundreds

of million dollars. So That is the one with mr.

Free Star power came through and got us some

money. Yes. All right, Kevin same question for

you eighties nineties or us Oh man, I'm almost

afraid that my my instinct would say 80s, but

I'm afraid that that's gonna be the one that's

gonna be the hardest but Let's take away that

we'll go with 80s. All right. These movies came

out in the year the infamous year 1982 and for

this we're gonna have a Sylvester Stallone showdown

which one of these movies made more rocky 3 or

Rambo first blood That is a hard one. Oh, man.

All right, so that's just a little one. Let's

link back to when I was one year old. When you

were on Box Office Mojo in 1982, remember what

happened that weekend? No, I don't. I don't remember

when we broke this one down back then. Man, rocky.

Back when podcasts were on A -Tracks. Right.

You had to have the CB radio and all that. Man,

Rocky's such a popular franchise, but I think

Rainbow First Blood was one of the most popular

in that series as well. I gotta think that the

audience that Rocky is playing to is gonna be

a bigger audience, and Rambo, just by its content,

might have had a smaller... Not as family -friendly

maybe so that could be completely terrible ration

rationale, but I'm gonna go with a rocky 3 well

first blood made 47 million dollars good enough

for the 13th place in 1982 Rocky 3 made a hundred

and twenty four million dollars good enough for

fourth place So rocky 3 did in fact paid more

that year So we have to blow one for one. I thought

I'm like always gonna go wrong, but you re -rated

the ship All right, Amanda back to you. Are we

going 80s 90s or 2000s? I want to stick with

the 90s. I'm a 90s girl. All right, both of these

films came out in the year 1991 and Let's go

with We did action. Let's go with comedy this

round to I guess debatably comedy classics What

made more city slickers or what about Bob? Oh,

what about Bob? We're going sailing! Ah, City

Slickers. I don't remember enough about how popular

City Slickers is. I mean, I feel like everybody

kind of knows City Slickers, but I don't feel

like everybody knows what about Bob, so let's

go City Slickers. All righty. Well, City Slickers

made $124 million, good enough for fifth place

in 1991. What about Bob? Made $63 million, good

enough for 19th place in 1991. So you're correct,

city slickers did in fact make more. More than

$100 million for city slickers. Not everybody

knows Gil. Alright, Kevin, back to you. You sticking

with the 80s or are you going to change it up?

I think I dodged a bullet with the 80s one. That

could have gone either way. So I think I want

to try to trust my more short -term memory. Let's

go with 2000. I want to say this is a cheat because

Kevin has been paying attention and making lists

of the box office for years now, which includes

the 2000s. I'm hoping that pays off, but I'm

going to probably put my foot in my mouth here.

Well, let's see. Let's see how much he paid attention

to these two films. Let's go with, let's just

say, movies for the female persuasion in this

end. We have, what made more sex in the city?

Or Twilight, the first one, the first Twilight

movie? Oh, man. I feel like that should be obvious,

but there is a huge following of Sex and the

City 2. If it was the later Twilight ones, my

answer would be obvious. Still think it has to

be that it has to be Twilight Maybe I'm wrong,

but I'm gonna go with Twilight well surprisingly

sex in the city made a hundred and fifty two

million dollars good enough for 11th place back

in 2008 but Twilight started off as a phenomenon

because it made a hundred and ninety two million

dollars good enough for seventh place so you're

correct Twilight did in fact make more we are

rolling you are all right I need to win This

is the first time that I haven't been the MC

of a movie game. I'm usually the one doing Dan's

role here. So you need to lose. This is my first

opportunity to win, I think. You win at everything.

You went to Star Wars Monopoly. That was so hardcore

the other night. Oh man, I feel like I started

something I did not mean to. Yeah, I'm gonna

start pouting just like I did after I lost Star

Wars Monopoly. Let's see if we can keep this

going. Are we going with 80s, 90s, or 2000s?

Let's go with 2000s. Alright, these both came

out in the year. 2002 and For our very first

triple word or not triple word tripping movie

score. So this will give you three points Three

movies which one in that your job here is to

put them in order from you know Least the greatest

or greatest Elise, whatever you prefer You like

doing your golden tuxedo. So come on and speaking

of tuxedos. These all were involved spies Which

one of these movies made the most we have the

born identity Die another day the James Bond

film and triple X If you're putting those in

order, how do they go? I'm gonna say triple X

at number three She's not even thinking about

this one. She's putting them right in order for

an identity. You said yes the verb for an I Born

identity at number two and then die another day

number one Dying Other Day is, in fact, number

one with 160 million dollars, good enough for

12th place. Then comes... Triple X with 142 million

dollars, followed by The Bourne Identity with

120 million dollars. Wow. That is surprising.

Those are some good movies, though. Yeah, but

if you would have given that list, most people

wouldn't put Bourne Identity as the third one.

No, no. Vin Diesel? Yeah, that's why I got a

sequel. He was a badass in that movie. I really

enjoyed that movie. I've actually never seen

it. What? Yeah. I haven't either. I haven't either.

Don't watch the second one. But it is. I actually

have been in it. How could it get worse? All

right. Well, Kev, can you pull ahead here? You

going 80s, 90s or 2000s? Oh, man. I haven't done

90s yet. Let's be fair and pick all the decades.

All right. We'll go with another movie from 1991,

two movies from 1991, both. Hard I would say

fun action films from 1991 One that's getting

a reboot of course coming out later this year.

We have point break or the last Boy Scout which

one made more I Love the last Boy Scout back

in the day I don't remember. I honestly cannot

think of any presence, either positive or negative,

that Point Break had in the box office. No knowledge

of that whatsoever. Last Boy Scout, I swear that

probably did better on DVD or in rentals than

it did in theater. That is a complete guess.

I'm gonna just randomly go with Point Break.

Well, Point Break made $43 million, good enough

for 29th place in 1991. The last Boy Scout...

Made 59 million dollars, good enough for 21st

place, so Last Boy Scout, in fact, made more.

So we're still tied 2 to 2. Yeah. Alright. Couldn't

pull ahead, choked. I will say that we have two

more categories left in the 90s, but we still

have plenty in the 2000s and the 80s, so. Alright,

made it. Let's try our luck with the 2000s again.

Okay. Alrighty, well let's go with two family

films. coming out in the year of 2002. We have

Scooby -Doo or Adam Sandler's classic Mr. Deeds.

Which one made more? Mr. Deeds or Scooby -Doo.

Hopefully the people listening are having fun.

being tormented with these decisions as well.

This is live -action with Freddie Prinze Jr.

and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Yes, the live -action.

I should specify. Yeah, the actual... Written

by James Gunn. I think even directed by him as

well. The guy who did Guardians of the Galaxy.

This is not movie 78 in the animated series directed...

No, it is not. It is an actual live -action film

with the guy who... What's his name? Matthew

Lillard? Yeah, Matthew Lillard, yeah. I seen

this and I had fun with it. I quite enjoyed it.

My little brother wanted to watch it all the

time. So my nostalgia brain is kicking in. It

wants to say Scooby Doo. But I think Adam Sandler

might have been almost peeking at this point.

He was well past his peak. Or peeking out, I

guess. I'm gonna say Scooby -Doo, go with the

underdog, literally. Alright, well, Mr. Deeds

in 2002 made a total of $126 million, good enough

for 20th place. Scooby -Doo made $153 million,

good enough for 13th place in 2002. Rock on.

I did not realize Scooby -Doo made nearly that

much money back then. Yeah, that's crazy. I liked

it. I think the big name cast and the nostalgia

factor. did its injustice. Alright. I think your

definition of big -name cast. Dude, Freddie Prinze?

Where has he been in the last? Buffy the freaking

vampire slayer, Matthew Willard, I love that

guy. So let's keep it going, Kev. You're currently

losing 3 to 2. Thanks for bringing that up there,

Dan. Technically it is, you know, still anyone's

game. You're going with 80s, 90s, or 2000s. I'm

gonna try to go the same route she did. It helped

her this last one, so I'll try to match her in

the same deck as she was just in with the 2000s.

Alright, well, let's go with... Let's go with

2008. Two animated films. And with Wall -E or

Kung Fu Panda, which one made more? I just thought

that was gonna be a slam dunk for me when you

said animated films. Those two I'm not a hundred

percent sure which one made more concrete panda

Wally Man Amanda's trying to influence me over

here the pressure pressure is on Wally obviously

was the more critically acclaimed one, but as

we know it struck third that doesn't We know

your affinity for animated sequels. Man, I really

want to go with Kung Fu Panda on this one. Yeah,

I guess something tells me I should go with Kung

Fu Panda and that it was one of those where Wall

-E was the better film but didn't make more in

the box office. I don't know. Alrighty, well,

Kung Fu Panda, it did make $215 million, good

enough for sixth place in 2008. Wall -E? made

200 and 23 dollars good enough for fifth place

in 2008 so wally in fact made more she's gloating

you can't hear very close all right she could

take the big lead now yeah you going with 80s

i mean we'll say 2000s are starting to thin out

a little bit but we still plenty of 80s Yeah,

all right. Well, we'll go with Trying to give

this Jamoke a chance. Two science fiction classics

quote -unquote classics We have Tron both of

these came out in 1982. We have Tron or Blade

Runner, which one of these made more? I'm gonna

go with Blade Runner. Well Blade Runner made

27 million dollars good enough for a 27th place

in 2000 or in 1982. Teron made 33 million dollars

good enough for 22nd place in 1982. Saying there's

a chance. So there's there's Kevin's still alive.

He is still alive and kicking. All right. I'll

go with 80s too. All right. Well, we were in

1982. Let's skip ahead to 1987 and with two crime

films. We have Stakeout or Lethal Weapon. Which

one of these films made more? There's no way

that Stakeout should have made more than Lethal

Weapon. There's no way. I'm trying to channel

my six -year -old self here. I was born. I can't

pick against Lethal Weapon. Even if I'm wrong,

I can't go against Lethal Weapon. Well, Lethal

Weapon made $65 million. It was, of course, in

ninth place. And Stakeout, well, it made $65

million as well. But $65 million, $673 ,000,

which was for... Thousand dollars more four hundred

thousand dollars more than lethal weapon for

good enough for each place So stakeout in fact

made more than lethal weapon in 1987 kidding

me. I am NOT Nobody would have predicted that

unless there's like a stakeout. I didn't know

what stick out was until I did this Man who was

in that? Yikes, okay, man, you got another chance

to clench it What are our categories? We have

categories in the 80s, and I will say in the

80s we have a classic 80s action film showdown,

along with a baby showdown, which we'll talk

about in a while. In the 1990s we have an art

house showdown, and in the 2000s we have a franchise

showdown, as well as a comic book showdown. I

know where she's not going now. You're not going

to pick the 90s. The babies one? No, the Art

House one. Oh yeah, there's another one. Art

House may be about, I would say, Academy Award

showdown. Oh, okay. There are movies you've heard

of, that you've been sort of. Where are you going?

Okay, we said babies, comic trucks, and then

a franchise. Yes. As well as an action one in

the 80s as well. I know you like your babies.

There's also a classic comedy showdown as well.

the franchise franchise showdown movies came

out in 2002 to the biggest franchises of all

time we have Star Wars episode 2 attack of the

clones or Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets

which one made more I'm pretty sure this is the

hardest one ever in the history of this long

history of this game I would agree This one will

be remembered. It's gonna go down in the game

book. They did some excellent choosing of these

films, that's for sure. Episode 2 and Harry Potter

2? I would say Harry Potter because I love it,

but there's a lot of fandom attached to Star

Wars. So Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

made $261 million, getting off for fourth place

in 2002. Star Wars episode 3 attack of the clones

made three hundred and two million dollars good

enough in 2002 so Star Wars in fact made more

even bad Star Wars So only little people like

Harry Potter Not following. Dan, I gotta close

out the other one for 2000. Alright. Last one

for 2000. This, again, is our triple movie score.

So we have three films here, all comic book movies,

and the task is putting them in order. This is

huge. He knows this. We have Iron Man, we have

Hancock, and then we have The Incredible Hulk.

Which one made the most? Obviously, what is the

order for these three films? All right. Oh, man.

Incredible Hulk didn't make that much money,

if I remember right. That was one of the lower

comic book grosses. For some reason, I think

Hancock made more than people realize. And Iron

Man seemed like... It's hard, because that was

the first one, and it's hard to say if it wasn't

until after that where the... Craze happened.

I'm gonna go with uh, I'm gonna go with Iron

Man first, Hancock second, and Incredible Hulk

third. Well, Iron Man was first with 318 million

dollars, second came... Hancock with 227 million

dollars, good enough for fourth place, and Incredible

Hulk was way down there at 17th place with 134

million dollars. If he comes back and wins this...

You're not going to see this, but he's going

to get a punch right in the mouth. What is the

score right now? We have Kevin with four points

and Amanda with three points. God damn it! So

we are out of the 2000s. We have two more from

the 90s and we still have a good amount from

the 80s. Where you going? Catch up, bro. Let's

go with the 90s. Alright with the 90s to again

kind of similar to franchises or I wouldn't say

franchises But there are two of the biggest films

that come out in 1997. The question is which

one made more we have men in black which or The

Lost World Jurassic Park, which one made more

I Know my answer I can watch that movie forever.

Um, but Jurassic Park already was established.

Had, uh... Had that following already. Ah, shit.

I wanna s - Okay. I guess Jurassic... Park, The

Lost World. Well, The Lost World Jurassic Park

made 229 million dollars good enough for third

place in 1997. Men in Black made 250 million

dollars good enough for second place in 1997.

So Men in Black actually made more than The Lost

World. Fuck. Don't doubt Molo Smith, man. We

just talked about Hancock. Like you knew. Honestly

would have been lost world myself too. I didn't

I when I did that one. I was like, oh wow, I

would Alright well, let's go back to the 80s.

Let's go with a baby showdown Which one of these

mean more you'll get it when you see it here.

It's three men and a baby or dirty dancing I'm

trying to put myself back in 80s mode here, and

they were all about the actors that were in Three

Men and a Baby. We're not talking about Three

Men and a Little Lady, we're talking about Three

Men and a Baby. That is correct. I know Dirty

Dancing is the more... People probably know more

about that now than I do, but I gotta go with

Three Men and a Baby. Well, Dirty Dancing made

six... Dirty Dancing made $63 million, good enough

for 11th place in 1987. Three Minute Baby made

$167 million, good enough for first place in

1987. First place? What? That was the biggest

movie in 1987. What a sad year for film. Oh man.

Alright. I'm feeling good about my position here.

Man, we still have enough for you to come back.

We have, again, we have one left in the 90s,

but the rest are 80s. Do you want the last 90s

films, or are you gonna go old school? Let's

wrap up the 90s. Alright. Again, two Academy

-nominated films here. Which one made more? Good

Will Hunting or L .A. Confidential? Who the fuck

is in L .A. Confidential? Wow. You got Guy Pearce,

you have Russell Crowe, and Danny DeVita, Kevin

Spacey. Let's go with Goodwill Hunting. Well,

Goodwill Hunting made $138 million, good enough

for 7th place in 1997. LA Confidential made $64

million, good enough for 24th place in 1997.

So Goodwill Hunting, in fact, made more. Kevin

started to celebrate like I lost. He went from

trying to celebrate my loss to high -fiving me

on getting it right. And he got the same look.

With both reactions, so we have the score of

five to four and we have Looking and we have

one two Three four five choices left if we want

to go out of the way But what we can say actually

four choices left because we use this one already

so Alright Kevin going with an 80s. Let me give

you Let's see here Action classics which one

of these films made more what the road warrior

or Conan the barbarian was the first Conan film

just if you're wondering Let's see Mel Gibson

against Arnold At this point in their careers,

I gotta say Arnold is gonna be I guess this are

the beginning of both of them For the most part.

You know. Man. I gotta say that it had to be

Conan. Well, Conan made 39 million dollars. Oh,

Jesus. Good enough for 17th place. That was good

enough for 17th. Yes, it was. The Road Warrior

made 23 million dollars good enough for 31st

place. So, Conan in fact made more. Alright,

pressure's on. You gotta get them all right.

All right, I'm getting the death look right now

I feel like I made a mistake All right. Well,

let's go with two two iconic comedies Man at

which one of these films made more spaceballs

or the princess bride Well Spaceballs made 38

million dollars good enough for 31st place in

1987 the Princess Bride made 30 million dollars

good enough for 44 41st place in 1987 so Spaceballs

in fact didn't made more didn't make more Yeah,

Princess Bride. I knew even though it's one of

my favorite movies of all time. I did not I feel

like that's one of the movies that has become

more popular as time goes on. Oh, yeah. All right,

so you're still in it. So this basically is for

the game. If you get this, then the game is over.

Otherwise, the man unfortunately has the chance

to tie. I don't know. I did not come up with

what to do in that situation. Actually, maybe

I have an idea. We'll see. All right. See you

next time, Mr. Odd ball connection here, but

we'll see how it goes. We have Star Trek to the

Raffa Khan or Tootsie Which one of these films

made more? And what's the connection that came

out in the same year? Man none of the Star Trek

movies have made much of them at the box office

as far as the original I'm not cutting the reboots,

but Comedy with Oh, how did I forget his name?

The guy from Rain Man? Dustin Hoffman, yeah.

Yeah, I just gotta go back on the fact that I

don't remember any of the Star Trek films making

much money. And Tootsie's got Dustin Hoffman

in it, so let's randomly go with Tootsie. Well,

Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan, didn't make

money. It made $78 million, good enough for sixth

place in 1982. But... Tootsie made a hundred

and seventy -seven million dollars good enough

for second place in 1982 so Tootsie in fact made

more And I will dock you right now You're not

the one getting it all right, but we do I can

just do the last one for fun if you guys would

like yeah all right, uh to Over -the -top action

films in the 1980s which one of these made more

Robocop or the Predator you love Predator so

I know you're going to be inclined to go there.

I'm thinking Predator might not have been as

big of an audience, though, because it's a little

bit more gruesome. RoboCop was huge. What do

you think, Amanda? I'm going to say Predator.

I'm going to say RoboCop. Well, surprisingly,

this last question was for the game. So Amanda

wins, because Predator actually didn't make more.

Thank you, Dave. For $59 million, 12th place,

where RoboCop made $53 million. Good enough for

16th place. All right, so hopefully you guys

enjoyed box office showdown. Yeah, that was fun

Definitely surprised on some of those and some

of the amounts that were I'm still surprised

that three men and a baby was number one Interesting.

Getting into our next section, which would be

what we've been watching in this last week. I

know, Dan, you've been catching up on some films

from this year, so why don't you start off? Oh,

yeah, sure. I'll start off with a true story.

Did you guys see this? Yes. You did? Okay. For

those that don't know, it's based upon a true

story, obviously. but starring Jonah Hill and

James Franco. Jonah Hill plays a New York Times

reporter who basically gets fired for fudging

a story. Shortly thereafter, James Franco is

arrested. He plays a person accused of murdering

his family and he ends up using this reporter's

name and they end up getting connected and starting

this kind of interview process. And it sounds,

it's rather cliche or seems very obvious, but

I think the best thing about the film is in fact

the story behind it. It is intriguing. It's really

weird. It's strange being being the fact that

is based on reality is just makes it that more

more interesting. The issue I had with it is

that I think James Franco could have got a little

bit better direction. I think his performance

is good. But the issue is much of the film is

is Jonah Hill's character interviewing James

Franco and it's like seeing him trying to kind

of fall under his spell or wonder if in fact

this character is telling the truth, but Franco

plays it in such a creepy, obvious, like, way

that there's no question that this guy is crazy,

or there's no question that his intent... I could

understand why he'd be infatuated with him, in

a sense of, like, similar to, like, the jinx

that came earlier this year with Robert Dirge.

He's just a strange person, but I don't think

there's ever any question with the way he's acting

that, yeah, he probably did this. in the way

he plays it. He just seems like a crazy person.

So when much of the film is dependent upon Jonah

Hill kind of falling under a spell, I just I

didn't buy it. I didn't understand why he would

make that leap, especially being a reporter who's

dealt with these type of people. And there's

also kind of a side story with like Felicity

Jones and his wife that I didn't think really

went anywhere. And it sounds like a cop out,

but I think the better option might have been

making a documentary about this topic. I think

I would probably enjoy that a little bit more.

I don't overall like it. I think the performances

are good and it's worth watching, but with a

little, maybe a stronger director, it could have

been a better film. What kind of rating would

you have given that one, Dave? I'd probably give

it a six out of 10. I think that's exactly where

we were at for the most part. I mean, we were

positive, but... limited on our positivity and

kind of going along the same lines of what you

were saying. I think the problem with that coming

from someone that didn't know, obviously I knew

it was based on a true story, but if you're not

knowledgeable of what that actual story consists

of or what the details were or how it all turned

out, the way it was played and the way James

Franco's character is acting throughout the film,

it almost left you thinking that there was going

to be some type of other twist or some type of

reveal or something that you just never get.

because otherwise you're trying to figure out

why it's being played quite how it is and I don't

know I was almost expecting something that never

happened during the film because of the way it

was portrayed and it just kind of like you said

with the white fangle that I don't have a clue

what the purpose of a lot of that was so I mean

it definitely had some holes in it as far as

the direction goes and then kind of the the compass

that they were using as far as where to point

things but overall I think it was positive based

on the performances and I think Amanda you were

you were positive on that one too as well right

yeah yeah I don't think it was groundbreaking

or mind -blowing but I think that there was some

fairly good performances going on and it was

definitely evident that James Franco was a creep

yeah that is and then he shot the movie Uh -huh.

Amanda, I know you caught up with one without

me at some point this week. What film did you

see without me? In the theater? No. Oh, you can

talk about that one too, yeah. What film did

you see in the theater? I know you already shared

your opinions on In Session, but maybe you have

some thoughts here for the Cinema Geeks as well.

I had a solo viewing theater experience involving

Magic Mike this last week. and I had a blast

with it. I had a ton of fun with this movie.

I liked it a lot better than the first one. It

definitely sought out what the fans wanted and

gave them exactly what they needed with it and

I was grinning and smiling and laughing and thoroughly

engaged to the whole movie and I thought it was

much more provocative and And not as raunchy

as the first one so I would give it I give it

a I'm gonna give it a nine eight or nine out

of ten Very strong whatever it wanted to do it

did all right Maybe I'll see that at some point

just to see Kevin Nash. Oh my god He turns out

to be the most complex character out of the whole

game. I don't know if that's a good thing Yeah,

you don't think he is but then all of a sudden

he opens his mouth and he has a couple lines

to make you see Some kind of insight into his

life and you're like got on the like like he

did back in his WCW days and I didn't see any

films by myself this week. So let's go back to

Dan. Dan, what else did you see? Yes, I did see

Spy and I will say I was pleasantly surprised

by it. I know it has like a 90 % on Rotten Tomatoes,

but even that I didn't know if I would like it

and I did and I think Melissa McCarthy breaks

out of kind of the mold she's kind of placed

herself into and her character has some dimensions

to it and she's very capable and she handles

both the action comedy well and I thought the

supporting cast was strong too, Rose Byrne, Jason

Statham, Jude Law, Alice and Janie, they all

kind of supported. And director Paul Feige shows

he's really good at mashing genres. It does work

pretty well as a spoof of the spy genre, which

makes me excited for the Ghostbusters in that

realm because I think he can handle that mashing

because Ghostbusters may be the ultimate genre

mashup when you look at it. So certainly not

breaking new ground. the most amazing comedy,

but I enjoyed myself. I thought it was funny,

and it falls, I think, along with the heat from

last year or two years ago, which is good, not

great, but I enjoyed myself throughout. And what

score would you give Spy? That's a good question.

I'd give it probably a 7 out of 10. All right.

Yeah, I think we were, again, somewhat in line

with you on that one, too. We enjoyed it. I again,

like you said, I don't know if 90 % is worthy

from Rotten Tomatoes, but I still think it was

enjoyable. I think it's one of those where it

probably doesn't have a lot of 80 -90 % reviews

on Rotten Tomatoes, but I can see where everybody's

giving it a positive review, so that's why it

has such a high score. A lot of sixes or something

like that from the reviewers on whatever Rotten

Tomatoes scale they use. Yes, we're mostly in

line there now I made a soft film that I don't

even think I would have ever even heard of so

What's your thoughts and what film did you see?

without me I watched the Duchess from 2008 with

Keira Knightley Ralph Fiennes and Dominic Cooper

and I think It's right in line with all the other

period pieces that Keira Knightley has done What

I gather is based on a true story of I would

say the life surrounding her marriage as a Duchess

of Devonshire. She's married to Ralfinius who

is William the Duke of Devonshire. This is kind

of a long film. It took me two days to actually

get through it. and I found the second half a

little bit more compelling. I actually sobbed

in this movie. I might tear up in movies and

kind of let the tears flow that way, but I actually

sobbed a little bit at one point in this film.

It was kind of heart -wrenching, and I thought

it was really true to form. The whole theme throughout

the the film is women as inferior to men And

it's really heavily handed heavily portrayed

in this used a heavy hand brushstroke wise with

this theme Of course blaming the females for

no sons keeping mistresses Divorce is completely

out of the question. You just have to kind of

accept what your husband is doing and put on

a pretty face and play their role they actually

even explain the rule of thumb where a man can

beat his wife with a switch no thicker than his

thumb and there's some really compelling scenes

as far as how they display this the husbands

being able to take the children away from the

mothers and having mistresses actually live in

the home and not allowing the wives to even take

their own lovers. Just this whole theme of double

standards. Ralph Finney is a total prick. There's

one quote from the movie where another side character

says in relation to... this duke and his wife

the duchess and she says he's the only man in

london that is not in love with his wife so his

wife is this charismatic individual always in

the eye of the public and very well loved and

received but by everyone except for her own husband

who takes mistresses and doesn't have a relationship

with her and just kind of makes her play this

role and there's some scenes in here that I think

are definitely worth seeing and I was pretty

engrossed in this film. There's some really like

I said heart wrenching moments that I won't go

into for spoilers but at one point in regards

to their marriage they're He's trying to convince

her to just come back and live in the house with

him and his mistress or basically be disowned,

I guess you'd call it. I don't really want to

say like, okay, you can go live with your lover,

but I'm gonna take the children and you're not

gonna have any money and I'm gonna make sure

that this other guy can't... be received in any

aspect of politics, what she was in. And he says,

this is going to be the biggest mistake of your

life. And she said, no, I made that one years

ago. So I thought that was a pretty powerful

line. And I like that it was true to form along

with having it be based on a true story. And

what grade would you give the Duchess? I would

give it a seven and a half. Alright, so a seven

and a half for the Duchess. Dan, I think there

was at least one more film that you saw this

week that you wanted to bring up as well, right?

Yeah, I saw Adult Beginners, starring Annie Kindler,

Mark Duplass, again Rose Byrne. It was actually

weird watching Spy within two days of each other

because there are so many similar actors. And

Adult Beginners, Annie Kindler plays the... This

guy who was this once mogul in his one project

ends up falling through so he ends up moving

in with his sister and his sister's Not mark.

I said mark you blast before my two plus is not

in this he produced it But he wasn't with his

sister and his sister's husband and their kid

and he basically becomes this like pseudo babysitter

as he tries to get his life Kind of rebounded

the movie that was like highly reminded of watching

this was from last year the skeleton twins I

don't think it's nearly as good as the Skeleton

Twins, honestly. Kindler is strong if you've

seen him in, like, the league, and he's certainly

a really strong comedic presence, but I think

in this he showed a little bit more range as

an actor. But I just think the... There's like,

it doesn't really, I don't know, know where it

wants to go. It's not, the drama is almost like...

unwilling to go as far as it needs to for it

to really have any weights or every time it gets

close to something that's really dynamic or upsetting

it it just stops and goes someplace else so it

so it's neat and the comedy isn't really high

-end it's just kind of middle -of -the -road

throughout so I think it's worth watching it's

I think it's overall a smart film with what it's

talking about but I think execution could have

been a little bit better and I'd probably give

this around a 6 .5 out of 10 Alright, so any

other films from you Dan? That was it. I also

need an extension of my homework like you do

as well, honestly. I started watching Blue is

the Warmest Color and I was watching it during

the day and I live on the bottom floor. My living

room is on the bottom floor and our windows are

open and I was looking outside realizing people

are walking by and thinking not the best idea

in the world considering some of the content

of that movie. So I've watched most of it, but

I hope to finish it soon. Alright, so we'll both

take extensions on our homework from next week.

We're going to go ahead and let Dan cut out at

this point because he has fatherly duties to

attend to. and we'll give you the information

on what Blu -ray and theater releases are coming

out, and we'll close out the show without him.

But Dan, always good hearing from you, and we'll

look forward to both completing our homework

assignments for next week, and then next week

we also will be having a main discussion on Ant

-Man, which all of us will be seeing, so we'll

give you an in -depth review of the current film

out there, so we're looking forward to that.

Alrighty, yeah, definitely looking forward to

it. Thanks, guys. I have to put my other hat

on, so I'll talk to you guys. Sounds good, Dan.

Talk to you guys later. All right, but before

we get into what's coming out and close another

show, we have one other film that we wanted to

talk about real quickly. And that was the other

film that we both saw in the theater this week,

which would have been Selfless, starring Ben

Kingsley and Ryan Reynolds. Of course, this is

the sci -fi flick. where Ben Kingsley is dying

and he wants to live out his life a little bit

longer, which involves him taking over the body

of Ryan Reynolds, who he is led to believe is

a person that has been created in a lab. And

then as the events turn, this is not really that

much of a spoiler, it's in the trailer, we learn

that. Ryan Reynolds was an actual person and

Ben Kingsley is starting to see that and see

visions and snippets of stuff like that and kind

of how he's dealing with that and his interaction

with the people that run the lab that allow this

whole thing to happen. So what was your basic

thought on Selfless Amanda? I think that I had

a couple issues with it but I really thought

the idea was pretty cool and Think my anticipation

level going into this was pretty high. I normally

I would say in a general basis I like Ryan Reynolds

and basically everything I see that him him in

I think it was a He wasn't as funny and this

it was a very serious role and it's not always

a bad thing for him to to be serious, I think

Thinking back the first series role I saw him

in was Amityville Horror and I was really impressed

with that too. I mean it's a very different role

for him than like Van Wilder or even Deadpool

that's coming out. I liked him, liked a lot of

aspects about his character. Ben Kingsley I thought

was a little underused. But I think I enjoyed

the film overall. Yeah, this is one of those

things where we were just talking about Spy that

we liked it, but we didn't know if it was 90

% good. This is one that, yeah, there might have

been problems, but it does not deserve the rating

as either. I think it's in the 20s or something.

It's just getting completely tanked. And I think

that's a little bit harsh. I agree with you.

I could have done with some more Ben Kingsley.

Number one, just because he's a kick -ass actor,

and it's fun to watch him. But I think the movie

would have... benefited from seeing more of his

character, because what happens is you have a

brief snippet of his character, so that's all

you can base it off of, and you're led to believe

he's a specific type of person. You don't see

that type of person at all though. Right, and

I think the movie fails because when he takes

over Ryan Reynolds' body, now that person seems

to have just disappeared, and you question the

motives and the character decisions that he makes

because it doesn't seem like... the decisions

that would have been made by the Ben Kingsley

character that we were introduced to. So I think

that's kind of where my biggest flaw for the

movie is. Other than that, I mean, I think it's

a clever concept. I think it's a decent idea.

You know, I think there's decent parts to it,

but I just think it left me wanting a little

bit. It didn't quite deliver... as much as I

was hoping it would, and I think a lot of that

has to deal with some conflicts between Ben Kingsley

acting like Ben Kingsley and Ben Kingsley acting

like Ryan Reynolds, and they should have been

two separate characters, just one. You mean Ryan

Reynolds trying to act like a character that

might have been what Ben Kingsley was like, but

you don't know? Right, right. So, I mean, it

seemed like he was clearly acting like that character.

acted and I know there's some blurriness there

where you're saying well it's part Ben Kingsley

and there's part Ryan Reynolds and you have to

suppress it or whatever but it seemed like he

was just acting like he normally his character

would have in the film instead of like Ben Kingsley's

character so I know that's a very confusing probably

for a lot of people but you know if you like

science fiction and that type of stuff if you

like the premise I'd say it's worth a watch it's

not nearly as bad as everyone's making it out

to be but it's also not gonna blow you away like

some science fiction can at some point so I mean

for me I think overall a grade on my end, I'd

probably be giving this one like a five. Maybe

if I was feeling real good, I'd give it up to

a six, but I'm gonna stick with a five out of

10 for this one. What about you? I think I'm

gonna give it a six. I think one of the biggest

things that I thought was kind of a joke in this

was, was it the original Total Recall where the

henchmen kept getting like new bodies basically?

Mm -hmm. I felt like that happened in this movie,

like with the henchmen. Like, oh, we're just

gonna give you a new body. We're gonna give you

a new body. You're gonna keep generating. So

I think a couple of aspects kind of brought it

down for me, but I'll hold it at a six because

I think it's definitely worth a watch and I did

enjoy it. All right, so that does it for the

things that we've been watching this week as

it goes for stuff that is coming out to the theater.

Like we mentioned, we have Ant -Man and Trainwreck,

but we have some other stuff coming out of the

theater that might interest some of our listeners

as well. I know a lot of people love the documentary,

The Act of Killing, and the follow -up to that,

The Look of Silence, is supposed to be released

in limited or... video on demand, some type of

service here on this weekend to go along with

Ant -Man and Trainwreck. We also have The Irrational

Man, which is the Woody Allen film starring Joaquin

Phoenix and Emma Stone. We have the old version

of Mr. Holmes with Ian McKellen, which I know

a lot of people are intrigued at. And then as

far as limited video on demand releases, we have

the Stanford Prison Experiment, which I know

has been getting a little bit of buzz with Billy

Crudup and Ty Sheridan. You have Lila and Eve.

with Viola Davis and Jennifer Lopez. You have

a biopic called Gloria on the Latin American

pop rock icon Gloria Trevi. A Hard Day, which

is an Asian crime film. Stake Revolution, which

is a documentary about trying to find the best

steak. And then a few other ones that we won't

mention. Not to go along with that, but as far

as Blu -ray and DVD releases, don't get your

hopes up and don't worry, you're not gonna have

to spend too much money on Tuesday on anything

because we have Kung Fu Killer, Paul Blart, Mall

Cop 2, and Waha! J -A -U -J -A, which I know

nobody knows how to pronounce, is all coming

out on DVD or Blu -ray on Tuesday. So Amanda,

if you can buy one of those three stellar films...

Or, I think the toughest thing, if you could

only see one of these films that's being out

in theaters, so you have to pick either Trainwreck

with Amy Schumer, and Company, you have Ant -Man,

you have Mr. Holmes, which one are you going

to see? It's kind of a hard one because I think

I'm interested in seeing Ant -Man, Trainwreck,

and Mr. Holmes, but just... Based on the fact

that it's gonna tie in to so much else. I would

say Ant -Man Alright, so you're gonna check out

Ant -Man I'm gonna pass on three blu -ray releases

for sure as well as all the limited release films

So man if it comes down to I do want to see Mr.

Holmes at one point But if I can only see one

of them I probably would have to see Ant -Man

I'm not trying to take away anything from Trainwreck

or Mr. Holmes or for those that are looking for

the Irrational Man from Woody Allen, but I didn't

see Active Killing, so I wouldn't be seeing Look

of Silence quite yet. So I'll go with Ant -Man

as well. As far as anything else goes, the question

that we wanted to ask you guys to... know kind

of your experience with the Comic -Con news that

we were talking about was what Comic -Con movie

news or trailer had you most excited. So out

of all the different stuff that was released

from Comic -Con, whether it be trailers, news

stories, images, or whatever, what had you most

excited? So that's what we want to hear from

all the fans, and we'll talk about that a little

bit in next week's episode when, again, we will

be covering Ant -Man with the three of us all

seeing that in theater before next week's episode.

Thanks as always for tuning into the Cinema Geeks

this week. You can contact us in a bunch of ways.

You can call the voicemail line, which the number

there is 502... 526 -5821, just let them know

in the voicemail that you're leaving a voicemail

for The Cinema Geek so it gets to us. You can

email us at feedback at geekcastradio .com. You

can visit the Facebook page by searching Geekcast

Radio Network, or you can go a couple other different

routes, probably the best two ways to get in

contact with us. Number one, go to geekcastradio

.com, find the Cinema Geeks tab, click on it,

and you can find a post for every episode, and

you can join the conversations there. Or, if

you want to get to instant feedback, we always

reply almost instantaneously, and that would

be on Twitter. The show is Cinema Geek Cast.

My Twitter is Optimus Solo. Dan's Twitter is

Movie Revolt. And, what is your Twitter, Amanda?

Hard Candy Mandy. Eyes know why. Alright, so

that's it for us. Be sure to check in next week

for another chance to listen to the Cinema Geeks.
