Which Volume of Guardians did you like better?
Geeks:
Kevin @OptimusSolo
Dan @MovieRevolt
Amanda @HardCandiMandi
Matt @FridleyCent
You got the touch! This is Stan Bush, and you're
listening to the GeekCast Radio Network. Dream
the dream. Optimus Solo and joining me once again
this week, as always, is Hard Candy Mandy. Hello?
Uh, hey dude. Hey dudette? Is that the proper
response to hey dude? No, nobody says that. Okay.
Uh, movie revolved Dan. I am Dan. I am Dan. I
like a good tie in there. And Mr. Frilly Cent.
Hey, I think the response to hey dude is a little
wild, a little strange. When you make your home
out on I like there we go. I like five people
know that reference All right, so we're here
back again with another episode of the cinema
geeks before we reveal what we're gonna be talking
about Today well, I guess we can reveal it before
we get into it though We're gonna be giving you
our review on the Guardians of the Galaxy volume
2 because hey, why not? It's a big movie. We're
geek Radio you cast radio podcast we should cover
things like comic book films and a little bit
more depth So we want to give you a full -on
review of Guardians of the Galaxy But before
then we're gonna take care of a little bit of
business and get some general conversation going
Matt and Dan both made it to the theater this
week for Guardians of the Galaxy But Dan you
actually caught up with three different films
in the last week to two weeks yeah i don't know
it's going crazy i'm going crazy i caught up
with yeah two i think both of these terms have
been out for a while but um i caught up with
king kong or kong skull island i should say not
the original but uh concert skull island and
gifted uh both of which i enjoyed for different
reasons uh you know kongs and a lot of you have
already talked about kongs skull island but uh
i just thought it was like ridiculously fun it
is kind of it is outrageous and it's like it's
an art movie in a way because it's like almost
a spoof not quite like it's on the borderline
of being almost spoof comedy in some in some
ways but still takes itself really seriously
in moments and also it looks great i think it
looks pretty pretty gorgeous kong is amazing
um and probably the It gave me all the like action
and excitement that I didn't get in Godzilla
or got way too Not nearly as much as I was hoping
for so I think maybe Godzilla's play technically
crafted film a little better. They're better
better crafted film, but but Skull Island was
hell a lot more entertaining as long as you just
don't take it very seriously because it's it
is utterly ridiculous and members of time, but
John C. Bradley was a lot of fun. I honestly
thought it was like that's like what I want for
summer blockbuster even though it came out like
in the middle of winter yeah yeah I agree I think
we both had a lot of fun with that one as well
I mean there's some problems here and there I
didn't really care for the Samuel L Jackson some
of his characterization and some of the angle
they went with him especially in the latter half
of the film but if you remove that I agree. I
think it was a lot of fun and I enjoyed John
Cirelli. I know some people had issues with his
performance or characterization and I did not
at all. I thought it was a lot of fun. Amanda,
you liked it too, right? Yeah, I think John Cirelli
was a great part of that too. I was really looking
forward to see him in that role and I liked kind
of... the epilogue that we got with him too.
I thought that was super great and handsome feel
good. Interesting you bring up Kong Skull Island
this week when we're talking about Guardians
of the Galaxy because there might be a recurring
theme of people not allowing themselves to have
fun at some of these movies. We'll get more into
that later, but how did you like Gifted? Liked
gifted it's very by the numbers I would say it's
you kind of know exactly what you're getting
and But I love the performances for the most
part and I thought the cast itself had a pretty
strong chemistry you thought Chris Evans and
I forget the actress's name but I thought they
really worked well together and You know hit
me in the fuels, you know, is it? And it like
it's very much like exactly what it is. I think
it's like, okay, it's movie called gifted where
a girl's young girl Struggling and you have this
custody dynamic to it and whatnot, but I think
you there aren't necessarily surprises. It's
You know, some could argue it's like almost a
TV movie ask in a way, but I just thought it
was you know Enjoyed it. I watched it on the
Saturday night and neither my wife or I fell
asleep So that's a huge huge boat of confidence
for it, honestly Yeah, she was good. I thought
she was quite good. And, you know, I just had
a lot of fun isn't the right word, but I just
I guess I just like being around a lot of those
characters and enjoyed the story for the most
part that it was executed. Well, I know the Spartan
Mark Web, who did 500 Days of Summer, is not
nearly as good as that. But I thought like it
was a better it was him getting back to his roots,
getting away from the Spider -Man films and getting
into more of a serious drama or something of
that nature, so I liked it. I thought it too.
It did a decent job of raising some interesting
questions when it comes to parenting and school
system and the idea of someone being gifted or
not. I don't think it necessarily goes as far
as it could have with those issues, but I thought
it raised them in an interesting way that at
least people could have the conversation after
seeing the movie and kind of... have some interesting
discourse with those topics and with those ideas
so I thought it did a decent job of kind of bringing
those up as well because I think a lot of times
gifted in the idea of someone being gifted from
an educational standpoint oftentimes does get
overlooked you know we spend a lot of time with
more or you see more I guess in culture in present
-day you know with special needs or things like
that and sometimes I think the gifted population
does not get put out there as far as what the
issues are surrounding that. So I liked how I
kind of brought those things up. Alright, so
a positive review for Gifted as well as Kong
Skull Island. Before we get to our review of
Guardians of the Galaxy, I wanted to give you
guys some information, get some business out
of the way. First of all, if you're interested
in more of our takes on current films, we are
doing a blog every month on GeekCastRadio .com
where we do our Cinema Geeks monthly movie roundup.
And what that allows us to do is we put little
blurbs out there on any film, any new 2017 film
that we saw during that month. So far we've done
one for, we combined January and February and
then we did one for March and then we just posted
last week our one for April. And sometimes it's
just a film one of us has seen, sometimes it's
two, three, or maybe even all four of us at times.
And we give like a quick review. maybe like a
paragraph or two just kind of our quick thoughts
and then we do a star rating on that so if you're
interested to see what we are thinking of as
far as the current 2017 films be sure to go to
Geocastradio .com and check that out you can
also view the individual thoughts on the films
on our individual letterbox accounts I have all
mine up to date Amanda will have hers up to date
shortly because he's making me But you can take
either venue, whether you go to GeekCastReview
.com or Letterboxd, and keep up to date with
our opinions on current films, since we don't
cover a lot of them on the main show. But we
are doing that today, so it does happen. Last
episode, too, I brought up the idea that we were
going to be doing a contest, and I know it's
more related to our video game series, but since
the last couple episodes haven't been our video
game series, I still wanted to bring it up. And
the contest that we announced last episode is
that we were going to be doing a giveaway -based
on our video game series review and based on
iTunes reviews and how that went is anybody that
posted an iTunes review for Cinema Geeks from
May 1st until the end of our video game series
will be entered into a contest to win a collection
of DVDs based on those video game films. I have
the specifics for you like I said we would last
week so that giveaway at this moment consists
of six films Dan don't don't hold your breath
too much though. The ones that we're gonna be
giving away are in the name of the king postal
doom Alone in the dark dead or alive and house
of the dead So did I name six or seven? I don't
know there's six films that we're giving away
The doom is actually a blu -ray the rest are
all DVDs So that is the prize pack that you are
entering yourself for now. I know Amanda. You're
probably saying to yourself Why is anybody going
to enter this contest? This is not going to persuade
anybody to write an iTunes review because who
wants copies of House of the Dead and Alone in
the Dark? Not to mention those other classics
that I mentioned. Correct? Correct. But you would
be wrong because we actually already have an
entrance. Yes. So we've already gotten our first
iTunes review during the contest. It's from Eric
Hutch 08. He labels the review a go -to podcast
and he gives us five stars. Says he's a big fan
of this podcast, been having a lot of fun with
the video game movie reviews and different games
they play. The preview EPs are fun too. Do wish
they would do more current reviews. Well, Eric,
you're in luck because we're doing a current
review today. So it does happen. So thanks for
that five star review. You will be entered into
the contest to win those six fantastic movies
on DVD and Blu -ray. Let's hope we get more so
we don't have to curse this one guy with all
these DVDs. And we did have a couple questions
on the website as well One of them was from Eric
He was wondering if if he gave reviews on other
shows outside of cinema geeks if he would got
more who received more chances to win So he's
actually really wanting to win this contest,
but unfortunately that we were only counting
cinema geeks reviews So you please do go review
other shows on the network But the only ones
that will count towards the contest are the cinema
geeks reviews We also got a question on the website
if it had to be on iTunes because apparently
a couple people out there do not necessarily
care for iTunes too much. We're looking into
that. I don't know what other ways you give reviews
on podcasts. I'm sure other platforms or other
ways that you can do that, but we got to look
into the logistics of all that. So please give
us more information on the website on what kind
of reviews or where you would want to leave them
and we'll try to include you in the contest as
well. Another way for you to interact with things
on the network Dan we're we're starting to prep
for a new Top 100 list like we seem to do we
used to do it every other year now Now we're
getting to the point where we're doing it every
year You want to tell them how they can vote
on that contest and what the options are? Yeah,
but you can go to geocastradio .com and on the
top right hand side You'll see a link to a Twitter
poll You can also check the geocastradio Twitter
account and there are currently four different
options. There's top 100 comic book movies, top
100 wrestlers, top 100 heroes or villains, and
also film franchises is an option. So we wanted
to give people the opportunity and see what they
wanted to see most of. I think there's a lot
of possibilities and a lot of benefits for every
different option. So if you have one that you
really want to hear around, feel free to let
your voice be heard, get other people to vote
for it. Fill the ballot, it's okay. no driver's
license needed for this voting. You just need
to have a Twitter account, I think, and you should
be good. And if anything, we all should know
that you need to vote when there's voting options.
So you need to get out there and cast your vote.
And also, even if your choice doesn't win, the
more people, the more votes we get, the more
likely we are probably to do multiple of these
lists. I guess if they got enough. votes, for
instance. So we've done these lists quite a few
times in the past, but we've never really given
you complete control on selecting what you want
to hear. So Amanda, you want to plug which one
you want people to vote for? Where do you want
people to go with this? Dude, I don't even know
100 wrestlers. So I want heroes and villains.
I think that would be the most fun. Yeah, that
definitely has a lot of interesting possibilities
when you think about different, I guess, mediums
as far as heroes maybe from TV, from movies,
from video games, from... comic books, novels,
there's a lot of ways to go whether you go heroes
or villains so definitely some choice there.
Matt what do you have a favorite out of the group?
I want to do the wrestlers just because I think
that would be fun but I don't know like yeah
I guess doing a hundred of anything is gonna
be hard. Yeah, it's always challenging to put
together, but we're we're doing the groundwork
early So we'll have a lot of time to get this
going By the time this episode airs you're only
gonna have about a day or two left to vote though
So if you're hearing this you want to go vote
immediately on Twitter or like I said good like
Dan said go to get castrated .com and find the
link on the top right where you can vote on that
poll but you're only gonna have probably less
than about 48 hours from the time you hear this
to cast some final deciding votes and I will
say There are three options out of those four
that are real real close. So every vote is gonna
matter in that so make sure you take part in
that and if you haven't heard any of our top
100s definitely go back to the archives and visit
some of those we've done top 100 animated series
animated films animated characters and regular
television series as well I might be missing
one but those have been the main ones that we've
done so alright with all that business out of
the way we're gonna take a quick break and when
we come back we're gonna give you our thoughts
on Guardians of the Galaxy volume 2 After these
messages, we'll be right back. Hey guys, it's
Dr. Masolo and Hard Candy Mandy. And we just
wanted to let you guys know about another podcast
out there that we both think you would all enjoy.
It's one of both of our favorite shows to listen
to, and it's none other than the True Bromance
podcast. True Bromance is a movie podcast hosted
by longtime friends, Hiro and Barry, and if you
like to smile, laugh, and just be genuinely entertained
while listening to movie talk, then this is definitely
the right show for you. Each week, the guys break
down a recently released movie, and not only
do they tie in the movie that week to the beers
that they are drinking during the show, but they
also tie it into a real fun top and bottom five
list associated with that movie. It's a blast
hearing both sides of these lists, and it definitely
makes them unique amongst all other movie review
podcasts. So we definitely want to recommend
all of you guys to go check out their show. Just
search out the True Bromance podcast on iTunes,
Stitcher, and all other podcast platforms. And
if you listen via iTunes, do us a favor and leave
them a five -star review. And don't forget to
let them know that the Cinema Geeks sent you.
On the Simplistic Reviews podcast, we talk movies.
We talk TV. We talk. Hello Julie, what the heck
are you doing? Trying to make our spot sound
more exciting by adding explosions Yeah, I'm
pretty sure you could have got the point across
with sound effects. Not the real thing Download
the show on iTunes or if simplistic reviews .blogspot
.com I'm sure your insurance company will cover
that. No, they won't. No, they probably won't
Alright, thanks for sticking with us. It is time
for our main attraction of today's episode, which
is our main review of Guardians of the Galaxy
Vol. 2, the latest from the Marvel Cinematic
Universe to hit the theaters and take over the
box office. We're going to start with just some
initial thoughts, and I guess the question or
the way I want to frame this for you guys is...
Let's start with Dan. Is there anything wrong
with a film just being a darn entertaining film,
or was Guardians of the Galaxy not entertaining
for you? Well, I guess, you know, based on the
fact that I like Kong Skull Island, you kind
of know my answer. No, I don't think there's
anything wrong with that. I mean, that's what
I think I go to the movies most often to do,
you know, is to be entertained. And I think it's
quite a skill to do that. Not necessarily, you
know, there is not to like do the, you know,
turn your brain off. It has to be, you know,
that's the kind of excuse you see for like Transformers
films. And I don't think those are entertaining,
but I think for movies... to be entertaining
and is an achievement when it's done well. I
don't think necessarily everything needs to be
shooting for Oscar -like greatness all the time.
And I had a lot of fun with Guardians of the
Galaxy. I think I have issues with it. I think
there are problems that exist with it that didn't
exist with the original, and I don't think it's
necessarily to the level of the first Guardians,
but I do think that sometimes we get spoiled
because of just how much... Greatness there is
and we don't I think appreciate in a way like
what's going on right now within Marvel when
you think about it like we have This is the 15th
Marvel film and they've been around for a decade
like The fact that they're at least at this quality
is quite amazing at this time You know 15 movies
in we were at Timothy Dalton when it came to
the the world of the Bond franchises You know,
I think Halloween was like going to hell Jason
was in space. I mean this secondly is in space.
Maybe that's a bad bad analogy, but But the quality
is, like, mean. Like, maybe there's some ups
and downs here and there. But, you know, Civil
War was amazing. I liked Strange. It was fine.
And this one was good. To me, it's like middle
of the pack when it comes to the Marvel overall
cinematic universe so far. But I enjoyed it.
I had a lot of fun with it. And there was just
things in this that occurred that I never thought
I would see on a big screen in a movie that they
actually did and the characters that they brought
in. I'm like, wow, they're actually going that
way. So that was fun. So yeah. you know, problems
but so enjoyable. Alright, Matt, another question
to go along with the idea of is there just anything
wrong with something being entertaining that
doesn't necessarily have to be Oscar caliber
when it comes to a think piece or something like
that. But the other question, a lot of people
have made the comment, well I guess we have two
sides though. We have one side that thinks about
the comic book or the Marvel movie Fatigue or
those superhero fatigue. And I've also heard
a lot of people say that Marvel hasn't missed
yet. They haven't had a misstep, they haven't
had a complete flop or a failure. So you can
really react to that statement to it did Guardians
of Galaxies that another notch in the belt for
Marvel another film that works Or is this a miss
for you? Oh? Man like they haven't had a flop
just statistically they haven't had a movie not
do well at the box office I'd say Iron Man 2
could have been a lot better though But like
I don't get the idea like the movies are for
entertainment Like, fun is entertaining. I don't
see how you need to, like, dissect it any further
than that. Like, if you enjoy it, like, why you
gotta be like, ah, I don't know, it didn't make
me think. Like, if you wanna think, go read a
classic piece of literature. Don't drop $8 and
go to the cinema and expect to have a life -changing
experience, because that's not gonna happen all
that often, if ever. So like yeah, this is like
just a fun action II funny movie Like is all
I really really want and this has got more than
that guys Yeah Amanda get your quick thoughts
before we kind of delve into this a little bit
further. What's your initial take? You think
this is another success from Marvel or are you
feeling the superhero fatigue? No, definitely
not here. Doctor Strange was, you know, pretty
low for me, but still a super cool -looking movie
and entertaining. This, I think, is... I would
say, man, it's hard for me to tell which one
I like more between the two here, but this much
anticipated sequel definitely did not disappoint
me whatsoever. I think another thing, too, that...
Give me a way to kind of segue into another rant
that I would go on but I'll avoid that but I
I don't understand the need and maybe it's just
because we live in a world where Twitter and
Facebook and message boards and forums have seem
to taken over as far as like the water cooler
conversations and a lot of those places tend
to have an overly negative tone and it's more
likely that someone's going to tell you why they
don't like something or why they have a problem
with something than just celebrate something
and I don't know I think people think it's easier
than it is to make a movie first of all and when
a movie does as much right as something like
this does I think we're too fast to discount
it for different reasons and I don't understand
the qualifications for liking things. It's almost
like the same argument when someone likes something
and they're accused of looking at it with nostalgic
glasses or rose colored glasses or it's just
the nostalgia talking or whatever. I don't see
the problem in that. Who cares? The reason is
that somebody enjoys something. If it's enjoyable
and it's entertaining, then didn't that... title
or you know movie or TV show succeed with what
I wanted to do which was entertained in the first
place and probably a side effect you know also
make money which all the Marvel films are doing
so I'm with you guys I have this may be the most
fun I've had in a movie in years. Kevin was brought
to laughing tears, and I have never ever seen
that. I literally missed part of the movie because
I physically had to take a napkin and wipe tears
away from my eyes. I was laughing so hard. Doggies
will be dying in movies and shit, Kevin won't
be crying a fucking tear, but then Yondu's like,
I'm Mary Poppins, y 'all, and Kevin loses his
shit. I now know what it's like when Amanda loses
her ever -loving mind and can't stop laughing
because I wasn't loud with it, I don't think,
but I swear. I missed like six lines of dialogue
after he said that. I was trying to get him to
stop so we could see the next funny things. He
was still laughing about the last funny thing.
So I enjoyed the film. Let's get into it a little
bit more, I guess, layer by layer here. Let's
first break it down with one thing that this
franchise is known for so far. A franchise, I
guess, two movies. Which is the music in the
film? So I wanted to get your guys's take. How
do you think the music was handled? Maybe I guess
in comparison to the first one. Did you enjoy
the music was a you know? Just one in the same
with what the first one did they use it better
worse or what do you think? Let's start with
Amanda What do you think about the music and
volume to the next day here? I actually think
that even though the music was you know a big
part of this second one I feel like it definitely
was more in the forefront of the first movie
like it was a big thing surrounding the first
you know in the first movie everything was kind
of surrounding it and I feel like the song choices
were much cooler in the first one and more iconic
but You know, this second movie still had a pretty
good soundtrack, pretty solid soundtrack, but
not something that... Like, I have the first
Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. I'm probably
not gonna go out and get the second. but that
didn't distract really from the movie. It just
wasn't as big of a deal in the second one for
me as it was in the first one. And obviously
the soundtrack is not just, you know, your typical
movie soundtrack. They find ways to interweave
this into the story. Obviously we have the Walkman
that Star -Lord carries around, which was highlighted
here in this Volume 2. Matt, what do you think?
How did the music work for you in Volume 2? Oh
man, I like... Part of me wants to agree with
Amanda that it wasn't quite as important as the
first one Like especially because the first one
came from this place where it's like his mom
has cancer And this is the gift she gave him
and it like has this you know emotional impact
But I don't know that it's necessarily Less impactful
in the second one especially when they break
down Brandy down to the lyrics, and it's like,
I've heard that song a million times, and I pride
myself in listening to the lyrics of songs and
in questioning, you know, where do these lyrics
come from, what do they mean? And I hadn't done
that with that song, and so that gave that song
a new meaning, a song that I've heard a million
times. So I don't, like, I loved it. I loved
the soundtrack in the first one, the second one.
I haven't bought either of them. So like if that
means anything that I maybe I don't like it as
much as Amanda But like I still enjoyed both
and I think that they were both they did a great
job weaving them in rather than Just making it
be a thing that was there like because sometimes
you could just throw in Music from our era or
our world into a movie and it's just there and
it's not discussed But I think the Guardians
have done a great job both times Dan, Matt brought
up the fact that they even do break down the
lyrics of one of the songs on the film for us.
Like I said, the Walkman plays a key part as
well, I guess, in a certain moment from an emotional
standpoint. Do you think those moments work for
you? Are you agreeing with Matt or Amanda in
their take on the music? Yeah, I guess it didn't
work for me as much as the first one did. But
I think it was... I don't know why. I feel like
it was more so I was in my head just trying to...
figure out understand and get an idea where the
plot and story was going that the music didn't
stand out as much and since like with the first
guardians like i felt like the trailer itself
set up that music a lot where this wasn't necessarily
the case i did like a lot of the choices and
um and i thought that they were effective and
very unique for films like it i feel like a lot
of movies use a lot of the same music over and
over again where this was where this didn't do
that uh but It didn't, I think, just work. I
didn't notice it as much. But I think that was
purposeful, because I don't think you can necessarily
do exactly what I did before. I think it tried
different ways to interweave the music, which
was smart. But it wasn't necessarily a detractor
for me, because I think it was effective in what
it was doing. But I didn't necessarily. I didn't
feel like I watched the first Guardians the day
after I bought the soundtrack. This one, I haven't
done that yet. Maybe I will after watching it
a second time. But after first viewing, the music
didn't necessarily hit me the same way. Maybe
I don't like that type of music as much as the
other one. I think it works, and I do like the
way that they interweave it. I do like the scene
where they break down the lyrics as well. I think
I would agree with what... Dan and Amanda are
saying I don't know if if it's a factor of I
like it or More or less than the first one. I
just think the first one it's more of what that
movie is more Driven by and it's more kind of
part of the core of that movie Like if you think
of Guardians of the Galaxy volume 1 you think
of the music I don't think you're gonna think
of Guardian of the Galaxy volume 2 and necessarily
the first thought is not gonna be the music I
think it's gonna be different elements of the
story for me. It's gonna be the comedy like I
think Two is funnier than one and so I'm going
to think more about the jokes when I think of
the second one I might think of the music more
when I think of the first one But I don't think
it's a detractor from from the film at all Let's
get some more of the technical stuff out of the
way before we kind of get into the characters
and the stories Apparently a divisive topic amongst
at least some people on Twitter and Facebook
as far as when it comes to Guardians of Galaxy
2 has to do with the visuals. I know we've just
ended with Dan, but let's start with you on this
one. How do you think the visual effects worked
in Guardians of Galaxy 2 and what was your movie
going experience? Did you see this in regular
standard format? 3D, IMAX, what kind of format?
Standard format, I actually watched it in like
one of the oldest theaters in... North America
or Eastern Seaboard. I don't know. It's in Baltimore.
It's one of those theaters in Baltimore and it's
it's great classic setup So it's just your your
typical it has the old -fashioned seating where
it's on stadium. It's all flat. So Maybe that
impacted it but everything looks great to me
Like I didn't notice any issues with the you
know I thought rocket was amazing like like he
was like they can really convey a lot of emotion
with them Maybe group look great. I love the
colorful designs. I like it. It really so out
last time I think they continued it like the
like they really had a surreal atmosphere to
ego which makes sense because it's such a strange
looking planet and the fact that they kind of
and I guess this would be spoiler so I don't
want to spoil it but maybe I can talk to it later
basically how it ties into his origin a little
bit and what they classify ego as so if that
makes sense yeah but but yeah I thought it looked
great like I thought it was I don't know. It
just seems like pretty standard. Not standard,
but like I had no issues with the look of it.
Amanda, what about you? Any visual moments that
stood out for you that you liked more than others
or that were memorable for you? Overall, I loved
the look of the film. I think the color was the
most striking thing for me I loved when they
had you know multicolor things like there's a
scene where you see some multicolor bubbles and
All these like explosions with of color everywhere
that you see even in like, you know the characters
the use of costuming to sometimes the color is
very bold but it's not distracting it's very
complimentary I love it and I was just kind of
wowed by that and also the detail of everything
was just amazing from again costuming to their
weapons the look of all of the planets and ships
and stuff they're on are super amazing and I
think that also like the special effects were
extremely well done too loved it Matt, anything
that worked or didn't work for you from a visual
standpoint or anything that you kind of stood
out? Oh man, like I loved, I think the thing
that stood out to me like beyond what has been
talked here is when they had the room where like
it was a bunch of monitors from different camera
angles and you could see like other like You
know, it's like the in the space battle where
they could you could see all these different
monitors from all these different points of view
in the space battle and How they all kind of
synced and meshed up and you could really feel
like you were there and it was like a real thing
They didn't just kind of make them blurry or
or not worry about it It was like a minute detail
that you may not have worried about but they
did and it really worked That's one thing that
really did it for me All right, yeah, I thought
they did everything. I agree with everything
that everyone else said. I thought they did a
great job with Rocket, a phenomenal job with
Baby Groot, and like Amanda was saying, the colors
that were used here in different things, whether
it be the environment or costuming or skin color,
I guess, in some cases, really popped and really
stood out. I was blown away by a transformation
sequence, I guess we'll call it, and I won't
get into specifics, but there's a transformation
sequence that involves like a skeletal image.
a body and I was in awe during that scene like
I was almost like I wanted the movie to like
slow down for a minute so I could enjoy that
scene or like rewatch it real quick because I
don't know and I've heard people rip that specific
visual effect but I thought it was it had the
same effect as when I watched like Terminator
2 and I was just blown away by that sequence
especially and then there was some other things
that they did with visual effects as far as lighting
especially with Yondu's arrow At one point when
everything goes dark and all you can see is the
red arrow going through I thought that was a
pretty clever Decision as well and I enjoyed
watching that sequence. So I had no problems
with the visuals I thought it was a fantastic
film to look at and not just for some of the
other reasons that have been said Alright, well,
let's get down into it a little bit with a again
trying to avoid spoilers until the end when we'll
get into that a little bit more But Dan, what
did you think of the overall story or the you
know? The direction they decided to go here and
the plot that's being used in Guardians of the
Galaxy I guess what I learned from Galaxy 2 wouldn't
sense a plot is how it didn't have too much of
it. The story itself I don't think really kicks
in until really the third act in a lot of ways.
It really just became an opportunity for these
characters to develop. and communicate with one
another. I mean, I was kind of disappointed that
they did separate for a period of time, but I
thought that allowed for some really great moments.
Like, I did not expect Yondu to be a standout
character, but he ended up being maybe one of
my favorite parts of this entire movie. And similar
with Nebula, who I thought like, wow, I love
what they did with her as a character and her
relationship with Gamora. She was kind of like
a throwaway character in the first one, but she
ended up becoming so much more complex and...
sympathetic as a character and I wholly hope
that she continues with this franchise. That's
all I'm all say the rest so Amanda I was gonna
ask You know like Dan said there's not necessarily
a lot of levels to the plot That's not like a
complex and complicated story They do have where
we split off and kind of follow a couple different
groups So they are able to kind of go in a couple
different directions there But the overall kind
of main theme of the story is relatively simple
Does that work for you or are you hoping for
something a little more complex? I think a majority
of it Seemed to be that the importance was surrounding
developing These relationships within the group
to bring the group to a higher level of Connection
and like grow their bond it did kind of bug me
a little bit too like Dan how it they were separated
off For quite a bit. I wanted more of the team
dynamic the team together. I mean you did get
that but it you know the first one they're all
together all the time and it really worked and
here we see them split up a little bit so it
definitely felt a little bit like of a connector
film but you get this story that kind of expands
everybody's story Little bit and you know developing
these characters, but then you also get this
bigger plot with Quill and his dad So I thought
that was super cool to see that then it's in
the first movie you focus on his relationship
with his mother and You have this mystery when
it comes to his father and now that mystery is
revealed and you can see some of these issues
Kind of come out with quill and dealing with
still with his mother losing his mother and also
now Meeting a father that he has never met before
I can relate to that I mean I didn't grow up
with my dad So being an adult and now having
a relationship with my dad I can definitely you
know understand a lot of the things that was
going on there So the story worked for me more
in a personal level too, so that's all I can
you know speak to but I think that the story
wasn't as Focused on the group but still it was
because you're getting more of these pieces of
the the characters that you wanted to see from
the first one All right, Matt Do you agree or
disagree with both of them as far as the splitting
up of the group? And another thing that I've
heard is that a lot of people had problems with
the story maybe dragging or not going as fast
in the second act or that it kind of stalled
out and that they felt like the pacing wasn't
good. Did that have any effect on you or what
do you think about those thoughts? I don't know
that I thought I had any issues with the pacing
and I didn't begrudge the splitting up of the
party because I like that it allowed you to build
this tension and tell the same like it's got
the same story where some characters are like
right in the mix and learning about it where
other characters are outside of Said mix learning
about what's happening in it and then they need
to reconnect at the end for the final act I also
like I think that that's a good idea When you
have a cast that gets as large as this like at
some points Arguably like nine characters are
the Guardians of the Galaxy. It's like Is there
enough things for nine people to do on this one
place when we have an entire galaxy to explore
or universe to explore? And I think splitting
them up is a great idea for the sake of the story.
and I think a lot of the little bits that we
learned because of the split we would not have
learned without it and so I enjoyed it because
of that. Although I guess I get like where it's
like you know and it's like maybe you wanted
more from Gamora on Ego because she didn't do
as much as the other guys did or like maybe you
want more from this guy here but it's like with
the cast as big as it is you're never going to
get enough of everyone and it's going to be even
worse if they're all together. Yeah, I can see
that, too. I can see that it would be a little
bit hard if they're all together the entire time
to do what they were able to accomplish by splitting
them off. So it's kind of like a, you know, six
of one, half a dozen of the other. Dan, you mentioned
a couple of the characters there that you were
surprised got as much screen time. Maybe talk
about those characters or talk about other characters.
Who do you think, you know, who were your favorite
characters in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume
2? Who did they use more effectively? Who maybe
did they drop the ball on or were less effective?
What do you think of the character? overall and
what were your favorite ones? I mean I thought
that they used the characters pretty effectively.
I don't know, there were some really great moments
I felt with him in this, but there were some
times where I felt like they really pushed him
to force in some comedy here and there when it
wasn't needed. I think of when they first meet
Ego, and he's asking me about his anatomy, and
I'm like, that seems, I don't know, it seems
a little bit of a forced joke there. And that
was kind of a common problem I had at times where
it did seem like there were... moments in which
there was too much comedy. But looking specifically
at the characters, like I said, I like what they
did with Rocket and Yondu. I love the relationship
they had. And you know, I did, I didn't really
like the regroup and it led to one probably my
favorite scene, which was the, their attempt
to get out of the reaver, not the reaver, that's
Firefly. It's the same difference, but with Root
Racket and Yondu trying to getting out of the
prison jail cell, that was like one of my favorite
moments. So I did like their use of Baby Groot
and how he became a sympathetic character. So
that was a lot of fun. I didn't expect him to
be, like I know they said he was gonna be a baby
the entire time, but they held to that. So credit
to them. And overall though, I think to me the
standout character in this was that. It's kind
of a spoiler though, because it goes into the
theme of the film. Let me just say I felt Marvel
fixed their villain problem with this, and this
maybe has one of the best developed... villains
in a Marvel movie in some time. I agree and that's
something I haven't heard enough people comment
about because everybody always makes a complaint
that Marvel doesn't do villains well and I think
this immediately rises to the top. One, two or
three villains probably that we've had in this
whole cinematic universe. I was very worried
at the beginning of the film because You know
we get the trailer and obviously the trailer
highlights a main joke by or main comedic moment
by Drax and then in the film almost the first
like two or three comedic moments that we get
out of Drax are almost the same way you know
the same type of thing where we're just going
to be laughing you know in the Drax style of
laughing at something like that and I was worried
that they were just going to do that over and
over and over and over again the entire film
and they did do it a healthy amount but at the
beginning I was real worried that it was going
to be overdone and I don't feel like it necessarily
was but I think it was right on the borderline
as far as their use of his laughter and his sense
of humor for that but I did like Drax as a character
overall I did think that somehow this is just
the absolute perfect role for Dave Bautista because
if you would have told me before the first film
that two films in Drax was gonna be as successful
of a character as I was I would not have believed
you because it just doesn't seem like that should
work but James Gunn definitely knows how to work
with Dave Bautista and how to direct this character
or create this character in a way that's going
to highlight Batista's strength and minimize
his weaknesses, so to speak. So I didn't like
Drax. I agree with Dan. I liked Baby Groot. I
was surprised at the amount of time and the amount
that I liked Yondu as well. I think if maybe
I was to point out somebody that I was disappointed
with, I do think, you know, kind of Gamora was
a lost character in this film that didn't have
a lot going for outside of the slight element
with Nebula in the sister aspect, but overall
I was pleased by the characters in general. Amanda,
what did you think? Yeah, I agree. I definitely
agree too that I felt that Gamora, who was quite
a big part of the first one, was not so much
in this. I think she was definitely still important,
and I think her development in her relationship
with Nebula was super cool. I like that too.
but standout characters for me was definitely
Baby Group and definitely Yondu and all the cameos
that we got were pretty cool too so I think that
Yondu definitely was freaking hilarious I loved
his stuff and he's such a badass creepy looking
dude but super badass and I'm glad that I had
different feelings for him now in this one that
I did in the first I think that was super cool
how you see him in a completely different light
here I like that a lot and I think You know star
lord and ego their back and forth was pretty
cool. I did like ego I thought he was interesting,
but you know fucking kurt russell dude and that
hair so Super cool stuff going on between us.
That's the whole part where dan was trying to
avoid spoilers. I'm not giving anything away
am I? But uh kurt russell and his fucking hair
was super glorious and seeing um You know how
quill reacted to seeing him and his dad that
brought out, you know different parts of them,
too. So Pretty cool. Stop fucking interrupting
me like an idiot. I'm not trying to... What did
I give away, sir? I guess most people would know
that that's who the character was, etc. What
do you mean? Like, people don't know that Ego
is his dad? They gave it away in the fucking
trailer. Did they? Yeah. They announced it, like,
when they announced the second movie. Like, I
knew Ego was his dad. Two years ago, and I was
a little upset because I was like, how does that
work? Like he goes a planet So get off my case,
bro Matt Taser face your favorite character or
who did you like and dislike from this version
of the first? Man like Taser face my dude. Oh
I wanted like Amanda barely touched on it, but
I think the the cameo game in this movie was
so on point like like from from characters that
were like minor characters that you'd see once
or twice to just like two seconds i think stanley's
cameo is the worst cameo in this dang movie yeah
it was great like like everyone else is so good
uh you know it's spoiler free but just know that
there are some really good ones in there um i
love i love i love tazer face honestly though
At the end of the first movie, the character
I wanted more from was Nebula, and you got more
from Nebula. Not just more screen time, but she
actually talks in this one. and so like I loved
that and I loved the exploration of that like
the character development of this movie was so
good and it makes it so easy to enjoy these characters
both the good guys and the bad guys like I know
their motivations I get why they're doing their
things and I love it like they did a such a good
job with the characterization of this movie I
think it's probably its strongest suit even over
the comedy Speaking of comedy, let's get into
that a little bit. You and Dan both kind of mentioned
it a little bit in your comments. Something that
I think Guardians of Galaxy 2 definitely amped
up a little bit as far as their attempts for
comedy. A lot of people saying that some of them
are forced or that the comedy was forced overall.
Was it just a few jokes here and there, Dan?
Was it an overall feeling or how did the comedy
work for you overall for volume 2? I think it
was definitely more hits than misses, but there
were more misses than this than there were in
the first Guardians. Just some jokes, I felt
a little tilt to Telegraph, like the lazy face
joke, for example. I thought it was good, but
it just went on maybe a tad too far. I could
have done without the one character laughing
on the monitor before that. Yeah, that just seemed
a little much. And then there were like. It got
to the point, too, where it just was so constant
that some moments that I think ended up being
ruined for me because I was just waiting for
the joke. For example, there is a moment where,
since we know that Star -Lord and Ego and Dad,
or Father and Son, that they're playing catch,
basically. And I think it was a moment designed
to be sincere, but I was just waiting for the
punchline because at that moment in time, we
pretty much ended every scene with a punchline.
So I didn't necessarily appreciate it on a sincere...
level because i'm like okay is where's the joke
is someone gonna get hit in the crotch with a
ball like where's what's happening here um that
didn't happen so maybe on a rewatch i'll appreciate
that more but i do think like there there was
a lot of comedy and that's fine i think that's
part of what makes these characters work is their
bickerness and how they go back and forth and
whatnot but i do think that like they were they
maybe could have uh you know made made a few
less jokes and have a higher percentage but you
know i never like Rolled my eyes or was annoyed
with it. I just felt at times where I'm like,
okay I think I think I think you didn't need
to say that but Amanda was it too Too fast too
furious as far as the the repetition or the pacing
of the joke after joke after joke Or did it work
for you? In your case. Yeah, because you're still
freaking cracking up and you're missing more
funny stuff It's definitely something that I'm
gonna like to rewatch and so you could pick up
and laugh again all these jokes and maybe catch
any that you laughed through the first time Kevin
so I think even the comedy is gonna be something
that holds up for you know at least a couple
watches there so I didn't think it was too fast
I do agree like Drax's laugh was like kind of
stupid for a little bit but it was it was cool
to see him let loose he got his revenge he's
worked Most the way through his issues that he's
had with this this tragedy that's happened his
life now He's embracing the new family and he's
embracing life after revenge and he's his you
know He's so much lighter As far as like, you
know, his heart is lighter. So I think that a
big reason why we see him laughing a lot more
in this I think comedy is always you know one
of the most subjective things to try to analyze
or try to like critique because everybody does
obviously have a different sense of humor I agree
that there was some misses here and there and
but you know if you're shooting as many times
as you are in this film you're bound to have
more makes as well so I do think there was a
lot of funny moments there's more funny moments
in this one I think than the first one but there
was also more moments that I probably was like
well that didn't quite work on me but it's okay
when you have so many other jokes it's like watching
stand -up comedy not every joke is going to be
funny to you but if the majority leaves you laughing
and you know you leave with a sense that that
was funny then you're not going to remember as
many of the misses Matt how did the comedy work
for you overall was there anything that stood
out or was there anything that was a big miss
for you? I think overall the comedy was great.
I do think there were a couple of times where
they hit it a few too many times. Say specifically,
see I feel like the Baby Groot one went on for
perfectly long enough and one more would have
been too much. I think the the fruits not ripe
one went on too too long. Oh I thought that was
hilarious, especially when the payoff happened.
I was like yes! See I thought I think I dislike
the payoff because it kind of ruined a tense
moment But like I get why they wanted it to ruin
that tense moment like but I don't know I feel
like a couple of them just went out a little
long But like for the most part. Yeah, dude.
It was great And like I've been I've been texting
people that I'm Mary Poppins y 'all like all
the time Who's he? He's a badass. I'm Mary Poppins,
y 'all! I lost my ever -loving shit at that.
It is so good. That moment, the moment Dan was
talking about with the jail cell and baby Groot,
the moment with the tape, even though that was
kind of teased, I guess, beforehand. all those
moments and I do think that's another good thing
that the Guardians of the Galaxy has done is
you know they do have those action sequences
or moments where they're not even showing the
action they're showing something completely different
like baby group dancing or rocket you know trying
to find tape and you know all that type of stuff
where you have all this other stuff going on
in the background but it's like we don't have
to show you all that you know that's what's happening
these guys are superheroes they're fighting you
know and that type of stuff's happening but I
think what Dan said with the taser face I think
that went a second too long or a joke or two
long and I thought like the David Hasselhoff
might have gone a bit too long as well but for
the most part that those those good comedic moments
outshined that so much that I like I said I have
not laughed that much in a movie in a long time
and I will never forget the Mary Poppins y 'all
line it was It was perfect. What about favorite
moments or any issues or problems kind of the
last thing we'll talk to before we go into our
grades and then get into spoilers after that.
So Matt or Dan, excuse me, any favorite moments
that you had that we haven't touched on and any
other issues or problems that you had with Volume
2? I feel like my favorite moments would be spoilers.
So we can save that until later then. Yeah. No
other issues really. Like I said, I love the
chemistry of the characters. Is Sylvester Stallone,
is that a surprise? I had no idea he was even
in this movie. Well I didn't except for that
they did put his name at the beginning as far
as when they were naming people off and I was
like okay so I was ready for it but I had no
idea going in that he was in this. Yeah I was
like I didn't know if that was gonna be some
like reference that Stallone being an alien or
something like that but that was it wasn't like
a bad favorite moment it was just more like I
can't believe Sylvester Stallone's in a Marvel
movie that is really weird to me. I feel like
that would be a bigger deal than it was, but
no. I think, yeah, I'll say the rest is for spoilers.
Alright, fair enough. We'll come back to you
then on the other side of the spoiler break.
Amanda, anything non -spoilerized, non -spoilerized,
yes, because that's a term, that you want to
get into as far as favorite moments or any issues
or nitpicks that you had about the film that
brought it down a little bit for you? Ah man,
nitpicks. I think I already kind of brought those
up and they were super minor. As far as some
of my favorite scenes, I think a lot of the stuff
with Groot worked really well for me. And I think
one of my favorite scenes was a scene with Rocket
just being a badass. So that was super freaking
cool. Also, when they're first getting to Ego's
planet, I thought that was really cool because
you're seeing such cool stuff. Yeah, I think
one of my other favorite scenes is gonna have
to be in spoilers, definitely. And you bring
up an interesting scene because I've heard the
argument from a couple people too that there
was no good action sequences or no good action
scenes in this film. And I think... there's a
Yondu has one and I think you just brought up
that rocket raccoon has a great scene that's
full of action and kind of whatnot as he's showing
off his skills I don't understand that complain
I guess maybe on a grander scale but there's
even a couple of those that were included so
I don't know about that Matt favorite moments
or other issues or problems that you haven't
brought up yet I don't know if I can point out
a favorite moment I love I love this movie oh
I do have I guess a minor nitpick which is that
there are times where the characters are just
like so like over the top and not like in a comedic
way where it's just like um like one person's
running from a machine gun for like two minutes
and it never gets close to hitting them even
though it's like you know hitting at their feet
or like one character who could just I could
fight 50 dudes and then lose all of a sudden
like like a couple of like weird moments like
that that I disliked but at the same time I don't
know, man, it's not an action film where it's
supposed to be ramping up this tension of is
Rambo going to save the day? It's way more of
a superhero slash comedy movie and you kind of
expect your characters to be overpowered and
invincible in those. So it's not nearly as much
of an issue, but it did take me out of it once
or twice. Fair enough. All right, final thoughts
and grades before we get into some spoilers.
Dan, what kind of grade are you going to give
Guardians of Galaxy 2 and any other final thoughts?
I'd give Guardians of Galaxy 2 a 7 out of 10.
Like I said, it's a movie that has problems,
but I think it does a lot well what a lot of
our films fail to do when it comes to characters
development on every app. and I think it's maybe
not getting appreciated enough for that. And
yeah, there's some issues here and there, but
I think, I don't know, maybe I'm crazy, but I
feel like this is one people maybe appreciate
more and rewatch as they kind of realize, I think.
what people got was something different than
they expected. So the maybe the appreciation
isn't where it should be. I don't know. I feel
like though mostly it is positive. I don't think
there's a lot of I think most people I talked
to have seen it enjoyed it. So maybe there's
some naysayers because that's the way the way
the world works. But anyways, so I liked it.
I would definitely see it again when I'll add
to the collection and Yeah, looking forward to
getting about Volume 3. Alright, Amanda, a lot
of times these second movies, and I'm not saying
this is going to be a trilogy, maybe it'll be
more or not, but a lot of times if you do have
at least three or more movies, the second one
sometimes gets not as much love because it's
kind of a developing movie. Did you feel like
it was that? Did you feel like it was standalone,
good enough on its own without Volume 1 or anything
to come later on? And what's your grade on, Cardians?
I definitely don't think it should be a standalone
film. It's definitely a connector film. You know
that there's going to be some more these guys
but it did have some closure and there was some
solidarity to what they developed too so you
got closure in places not like that I don't like
a movie that doesn't give me some sort of closure
drives me nuts I want to give this an 8 8 .5
I really really liked it I thought the look of
the tone everything about it was awesome especially
the characters and stuff that we got here so
I definitely want to rewatch this all right Matt
what do you think final thoughts I'm great for
Oh man so I've been saying probably since Iron
Man 2 and I've definitely held strong to this
point up till now that the second Marvel movie
second the sequel to every Marvel movie I don't
know the second one of any one of the Marvel
movies is always the worst like Iron Man 2 I
think is not as good as Iron Man 1 or 3 Cap America
2 I don't think was as good as 1 or 3 and Avengers
2 was nowhere near as good as that first one
That said, I think that that line is a lot blurrier
here. I think this one's way closer to the first
one and very enjoyable, but like Amanda says,
you can't watch this without the first one for
sure, but what it does is it builds on that rather
than just. like trying to rely on that cache
built by the first one. It creates more and adds
more to it rather than draining from the total.
And I think that's like it's one of its strongest
suits. I love this movie. I think it's a very
solid eight out of 10 and I might be able to
be convinced to go up on that. All right. I think
another thing that we got out of this, you know,
you had James Gunn doing that first one and I
would think or hope that you know, this is kind
of a film where if there was any limitations
on him in the first film, they probably wouldn't
have been existing for this one. based on the
success of the first one kind of out of left
field and how how well that was received. So
you got to think that he had a little bit more
to make the film that he wanted to make with
this one as well. I thought most things worked.
Yeah, there's a few minor things I could point
out here and there. But and I don't want to compare
it necessarily to the first one because I have
not had a chance to rewatch the first one since
we've seen the second one. I want to kind of
now go back and rewatch the first one before
I say it's better or worse or whatever. But I
think it's definitely on par and it feels like
it's, you know, of the same ilk, whether it's
slightly above. slightly below I would probably
give this one I'm I was thinking eight and a
half as well but I could I could probably be
convinced to go higher but I don't want to because
that maybe just you know because it's so fresh
on my mind and because I had so much of a blast
in the theater laughing harder than I ever have
before it seems like so I'm gonna say eight and
a half but I think we're gonna take a quick small
break very quick get another ad out there and
then we'll come back with some spoiler talk before
we close this one out so we'll be right back

Stay connected with us every Tuesday on iTunes
or at GeekCastRadio .com Thanks for sticking
with us. We're going to get into a little bit
of spoilers here for Guardians of the Galaxy
2, so everything is fair game. Dan, you talked
about some favorite moments that might have been
spoilers, so you can go ahead and go on those
as well as any other spoiler talk you want to
get out. One was actually one of the end credits
scenes. It was the one that actually kind of
points to what is coming down the pike with the
link to possibly Adam Warlock. It was that cocoon
thing, and for people that don't know Adam Warlock.
a big part of the Infinity and the Gauntlet storyline.
He was a huge cosmic character, kind of the level
of Thanos. Hasn't really been used a lot in comics
recently, but he's a great character. He's actually
part of the Guardians of the Galaxy reboot series
that happened in the mid -2000s. And we've been
waiting for him to show up for quite some time
now. So the fact that they actually kind of...
Introduced him or was kind of cool and I did
like the fact that the fan theory of Stanley
being a watcher in all these movies has been
confirmed Based upon the cameo may not have been
the best cameo, but I did I'd kind of like that
I mean it made me a little on the nose, but I
did like the fact that watchers to chill up because
that's I do love those characters real quick
before you get into any other spoiler talk let's
get around and real quick and just get quick
reactions to the post credit sequences a lot
a lot to do about maybe a much I do about nothing
as far as people freaking out or having over
reactions if there was gonna be five six whatever
many credit scenes there was gonna be Amanda
what was your overall take on the end credit
scenes oh they were super good liked them the
Stanley cameo was a little weak but I do think
that that theory was pretty cool too So not bad.
I love the teen Groot one. I thought that was
awesome. I was sad It's like a puppy. You just
want him to stay cute and little he was still
He was just a jerky teen. So Yeah, he's got to
come back to be a badass like a full -grown badass
at some point here. I thought The small little
cameo that we got in the film to for another
Howard the duck sighting. I thought that was
pretty cool He's been released. He's he's not
in the collector's possession anymore He's out
on the town drinking again. Like how were the
duck will do? So I thought that was pretty cool
Not a crank seat, but it's still a spoiler thing
that I wanted to point out and then the cameos
that we got forget was that big rams and semester
saloon, who is that lady that from Oh, I forget
her name. Miley Cyrus, the talking head? Oh yeah,
I didn't catch that. I didn't catch that either.
I missed you guys so much! Yeah. Hold on. Hasselhoff?
Hasselhoff, yep, definitely. And I think that
as far as spoilers go, are we getting any more
spoilers yet? Give me one second, Matt, what
was your take on the end credit scenes? Do they
work? Not work? Was there too many? What do you
think? That dude, there's never too many like
they could do nine of them. I'm here's the thing
I'm the I'm the guy that sits in the theater
until the crowds are done because I like to sit
there and digest it So if you're like, hey, you're
gonna do that thing. Anyway, here's more movie.
Like how am I gonna complain? Other spoiler now
you guys can get more into like specifics, but
Dan I know you had mentioned a couple things
as far as character goes So maybe along the lines
of the villain. Did you want to say more about
that? Well, I like you know how they treated
ego as a planet. So, you know, having the Kurt
Russo kind of living embodiment, there is a great
reference to what he kind of looks like as a
planet that kind of connected to the comics.
And they also made him a celestial, which is
odd because they actually sold Sheldt's celestials
in the other Guardians of the Galaxy film. But
I think what it seems like they're kind of using
that as some sort of kind of title for characters
of this nature. And they did make a shout out
to eternity, which many people don't. Maybe care
about but that's a another kind of embodiment
character of in the comics and it's Really interesting
crazy character and someone who loves the cosmic
universe in Marvel I'm excited for where they're
going like if they could bring out this character
called living tribunal like that'd be amazing
I don't know if they're gonna go that route But
it just has me excited that I actually got a
movie with Eagle Living Planet Which is something
I never thought would happen like it's one of
the craziest characters in all of comics and
he was the main villain in a movie making like
a billion dollars so that's insane to me. And
I think that's too why it's not fair to critique
this film as much as some people have with that
second act or with the part between Ego and Star
-Lord because you gotta understand what they're
doing here. They are making a character that
is a planet somehow work on a live -action big
budget film and like I don't know the comics
and I didn't read them but just the idea when
this was you know, initially rumored that that
was going to be a character or a villain or something
in this film. It's like, how in God's name are
they going to pull that off? Like, are they going
to have some cheesy like planet looking thing
with a face? Which I even thought the way they
did that was not necessarily cheesy looking.
But I just think the way that they were able
to pull off the believability that they were
able to achieve as why he was in human form and
that he's also the planet etc i thought it was
done way better than i would have ever expected
so i was blown away by that amanda thoughts on
ego or you can get into those other spoiler thoughts
that you were talking about a second ago yeah
i was super interested to see how they were going
to pull the whole planet thing off i thought
uh i thought it was a really well done and I
couldn't have thought of that that was pretty
cool also him procreating with like every species
that was freaky um and he always dressed in the
same like 70s not just procreating but then mass
murdering oh that was I actually liked like that
dark twist seeing all those like you know skeletons
down there like that that just solidified how
much of a villain that he was really like in
this and how evil that he was and I thought that
was a really cool touch as far as other spoilers
so Yadu's death and his funeral that That was
hard to watch. I mean, that was sad. The way
he sacrificed himself and how he really broke
it down to Star -Lord and how much he really
meant to him and why he kept him and all that.
I thought there was so much heart in that and
the selflessness there was great. I thought that
was so touching. And when they gave him the Ravager
funeral, that was cool. I was really glad they
did that because at first I was like, man, this
is the most anti -climactic. major death that
I've seen in recent times and then the the Ravager
funeral really kind of helped. pull that emotional
beat together for me so I like that they did
that. There's also some great that we didn't
bring up in the first part but some great emotional
moments and we kind of did in a roundabout way
but between Yondu and Rocket as well Dan mentioned
that is kind of a part as well but I thought
they did hit some pretty good emotional beats
along the way that I wasn't necessarily expecting.
Matt, other spoiler -ific things that you wanted
to bring up? I'm sure there is but I can't really
remember. What were the four credit scenes? There
was teen group. There was Adam warlock There
was The thing with the arrow? Yeah, the broken
arrow. Oh broken arrow. I thought the watches
was in the movie. Oh was it? Yeah, it was both.
It was in the part where they going through All
the different universes or whatever like the
different jumps. That's what you first see him
Yeah, and then he's at the end too. All right.
All right Okay, I can't remember. I just I mean
I liked it though Like I really really liked
Sylvester Stallone and I didn't know it was gonna
be in it until the opening credits Yeah, that
was kind of crazy Dan what did you think about
the Yondu death and things associated with that?
Yeah, I thought that was great. Like I was like
I had mentioned like I thought the way they treated
Yondu was one of the best parts of the film.
It really made him into an interesting character
and developed him and his relationship with Peter
Quill. And that was actually one of the more
effective deaths in the Marvel films. I know
a lot of people like to point to Marvel, but
no one ever dies. And I think death or having
people die doesn't, for me, raise the stakes.
I think that's the easiest way to raise stakes.
I think there's more to a movie than that. But
I think it was an effective way and it made sense.
it was well done yeah all right anybody else
