Geeks:

Kevin @OptimusSolo

Dan @MovieRevolt

Amanda @HardCandiMandi

Matt @FridleyCent

Starscream here, and I am the lord and master

of the Geekcast Radio Network. Don't tell Megatron.

And welcome to another episode of The Cinema

Geeks. I am one of your Cinema Geeks, Kevin Optimus

Solo. Joining me today for another one of our

special beginning of the year records is Ladies

First, Hard Candy Mandy. Hello. Uh, hey. Uh,

hey. I don't know how to take that. Was that

an excited about the record today or was that

a here? What are you doing? I'm here, bro. You're

here, bro. Okay. I didn't know we turned into

bros. But also joining us is movie revolt Dan.

How's it going, sir? It is going well. It is

going well. We're still here? Yeah, 2016 is over.

Now onto 2017. Hopefully it means good things

for the film world, I guess. Right? Sorry, I'm

making this painfully awkward, but let's move

on to film talking. I'm here. That's why I'm

here. Also joining us is Bradley Send. Hello?

Hi! Everybody he wins the prize for the most

enthusiastic about this record and about things

in general So all of us are here and accounted

for and today like we've teased the last couple

episodes We're gonna do another one of our kind

of special end of the year beginning of the year

type things this one completely now shifting

our focus to 2017 so no more looking back as

far as our regular records go we're all looking

ahead and in this way we're going to be looking

ahead at our most anticipated films of 2017 so

how we normally do this for those of you that

might not have listened in previous years we

have all prepared our list of most anticipated

films for the year and from that data we've kind

of compiled a bunch of different lists so how

we're going to do this is we're going to be talking

about our individual most anticipated films and

then towards the end of the record we'll kind

of hit it with a big bang as we go over our most

anticipated films that we all had in common or

at least most of us had in common so a couple

different sections so it should be a chance to

kind of mention a whole bunch of films and talk

about why they are films that we're anticipating

but before we get into the actual list let's

just go over real quickly I guess in forms of

criteria what makes you anticipate a film more

than others and what kind of things do you look

out for that kind of piqued your interest? We'll

start with Dan. Are you looking for cast? Are

you looking for genre and topic? Are you looking

at directors, studios, writers? What kind of

hits home the most for you when you're looking

at these films? Typically, I'm looking for directors

first and I often try to find directors that...

you know I enjoyed their first films or ones

that like I feel like on the precipice of doing

something great like they're they had a good

movie maybe they had one of their belts maybe

they can do something great after that um then

comes cast and then after that it's just if just

something is based on a property that I'm really

interested in I'll get to a movie that is kind

of a combination of all those things or just

the concept sounds intriguing and try to put

a list together and see how well I do and sometimes

it works out and sometimes it doesn't feel being

awful. It's the nature of the game. What often

happens especially when we're doing this for

the entire year is it's not like our seasonal

previews or you know when we only pick a couple

months at a time where we have access to all

of the trailers because usually when we're doing

this for the entire year at once at the beginning

there's limited amounts of visual things to go

off of. Some of the films we will have trailers

that we can see or like still photography that

we can see and stuff like that but a lot of it's

just going off of textual things that we can

read about the film. Amanda what was the biggest

factor in your creation of your list? Is it the

franchises that you work or is it just genre

or what kind of helped the most for you to make

something gain a spot on your list? I think the

franchises have kind of been taken over my list

a little bit here just based on the amount of

sequels that we're getting and even you know

the DC franchise that have kind of, or that DC

world that has kicked off is kind of, you know,

picking up speed here. So some of those are coming

into play too. And also just like genres that

I gravitate towards. All right. Matt, what about

you? What makes a film something that you're

looking forward to? Number one has got to be

genre. Like, and this, you know, can bite me

in the ass really easily but like i'm gonna look

what's what's a first off i want to see pretty

much anything that's a fantasy movie in theaters

unless it looks real weird or real terrible um

just because we don't get enough fantasy movies

and a lot of the ones we get aren't necessarily

the best but if you support them maybe you'll

get more and then beyond that i would uh actually

i don't know if there is a single actor who would

draw me into a movie i wasn't already pretty

sure on or a director or anything. It's pretty

much the genre. I want to see the fantasy, I

want to see the sci -fi. I want to see a few

action, but not too much. Usually a comedy. But

I don't go to the theaters nearly as much as

I probably should. And so... I think this year

on my list, too, I happen to run across... some

actors that I definitely like, and seeing them

going to be in a different genre, I was super

intrigued. Like, oh, so -and -so is going to

be in a movie directed by this dude that I really

like in this genre. Now I'm really intrigued.

Yeah, I think a little of it all kind of can

play a part. I think certain movies, all I need

is the franchise or properties connected to,

or the things I'm more willing to anticipate,

like a science fiction film or certain genres

I just gravitate more towards because I know

I like more films. that genre and then after

that you know when you're looking at a huge list

then it starts to pare down based on the cast

or someone I really gravitate towards and as

years go on I pay more and more attention to

the directors because it does seem like there's

a consistency level from quite a few I mean you

do have your directors that are all over the

map and you like one hate one in the middle of

the road but I tend to gravitate towards certain

directors and away from certain directors so

that would also play a part other than that I

think it's just about uniqueness for me too.

Once you get past the property and the franchise

things, when you're looking at these other, especially

like the independent films and some of the smaller

films, it's... you know is it something that

i've never seen before is it a concept that seems

you know unique or crazy to me that i'd be interested

in seeing what how they're going to pull it off

so i think a lot of those things can play into

effect there so let's get into our actual numbers

so like i said these were picks that were on

people's list that were either they were the

only person that had this film on their list

or they were one of two people that had this

film on their list and we will start with the

number 10 pick for amanda ladies always go first

here so amanda What was your 10th most anticipated

film when we're looking at our unique list? It's

going to be Hostiles set in 1892 and let's see

here a legendary army captain reluctantly agrees

to escort a Cheyenne chief and his family through

dangerous territory. And what kind of grabbed

me here was some of the players, Ben Foster,

Christian Bale, Stephen Lang, Rosamund Pike.

And I really like Native American stories, so

this seems like some people that I can get behind

in a story that I think I might like. And it's

kind of a Western too, so that might be what

we're getting this year for Westerns. Yeah, I

had this in my list of most anticipated films

for the year because Dan and I each did a kind

of a list of 100. So this is definitely one that's

on my radar. I do like this kind of period in

that setting. So I'm interested in that as well.

And I like the players involved. This is my 21

on my my individual list. Yeah. A lot of these

picks don't have release dates and that's something

that we always kind of, I guess I could have

brought up in the introduction, that we always

play this roulette game here on if the movies

are actually going to be released in. the year

that we're speaking of because a lot of times

it's to be announced or there's no release date

set yet so i always do have to apologize if some

of these films end up not coming out this year

it definitely happened last year and i have some

yeah i was i was anticipating how uh everybody

wants them for like three years it was on my

list so yeah there's been a few of those that

just seem like it's like a three or four year

time where they could appear every year on your

most anticipated list so matt let's go to you

now with your number 10 pick on your unique list

all right and my weird list. My number 10 was

The Space Between Us. I think I might have talked

about this last year, whether it was on the draft.

It pretty much had to be the draft, right? Yeah.

It looked real. Well, it looked pretty interesting.

I think it could do well. It could be bad. Like

it's pretty cheesy. It's like, you know, sappy

love story with a sci -fi element to it. But

it could be really good. Yeah, and this is one

of those that does have the trailer so we have

been able to see a little bit about this and

I definitely Think that they are marketing this

pretty heavily and that there's a an audience

that is for us I think you're right though. It

could be borderline It could be something that

ends up being a little too overly cheesy or it

could be just a fun science fiction kind of coming

-of -age type of film so I Don't think you're

alone in anticipating the space between us. It

seems like it's been advertised for already a

year So maybe that's what it was originally set

to come out last year. I think I pushed it back

to this year. Gotcha. Makes sense. For my number

10, I'm going to go with a film entitled Mother,

and this is going to be the next film from Darren

Aronofsky as the director. He was the one for

those not. uh sure about him he did black swan

he did noah he did the wrestler i really was

a huge fan of the wrestler maybe noah had some

more problems with that but i'm hoping this is

one that will be on the positive in his filmography

a couple of relationships tested when uninvited

guests arrive at their home disrupting Their

tranquil existence has Dom Nalgleson, Jennifer

Lawrence, Ed Harris, Javier Bardem, Michelle

Pfeiffer. So obviously a star -studded cast,

a director that is capable of making a pretty

good film. So that was enough for me to have

it. I think it was in the 20s in my overall list.

But I'm looking forward to seeing what Darren

Aronofsky does. I always look forward to his

films, whether they work or don't, because I

always think that there's some interesting...

Choices that he makes along the way whether it's

good or bad, but they're always interesting that

way kind of a cute concept with some Really heavy

hitters if he if he asked me like I think Michelle

Pfeiffer is gonna be in it, too Javier Bardem

is always a powerhouse and I really liked Domnoglissant

like everything that I've seen him in I've super

loved him and so I'm excited to see him Play

it off a J -Law J -Law is that what? Anyways,

Dan, what do you think? Is it risky having a

Darren Aronofsky film that you're anticipating?

I think his career is pretty solid. I mean, like,

even if it's something like The Fountain, which

I know a lot of people love and a lot of people

hated, it's going to be there's going to be something

to talk about. There's going to be something

to kind of debate. There's never going to be

necessarily bored or it's ever going to be like

there's going to be something very. Different

about his movies are always visually interesting.

The wrestler to me is like a masterpiece He's

black swan. I mean like the guy can direct I

like Noah like it had some It was weird like

in a good way. It felt like an 80s fantasy film

set in biblical times I think we were higher

on that film than most people because we didn't

have nearly the amount of problems that a lot

of people did yeah, I think a lot of people didn't

like it too because I think people thought maybe

it was gonna be more of a Straight, you know,

right more of not nearly as a fantastical as

it was but yeah, I think it also looks amazing.

So Yeah, I have that on my list to that. I guess

obviously not as far as you guys but I probably

shouldn't I don't know why any lower than why

I put it lower but Aaron off he thought is I'm

always excited to see anything he does Well especially

at the beginning of the year when you have so

many potential films coming out it is hard to

kind of narrow them down and rank them based

on a lot of times not much. So it's easily sometimes

where we have these that are somethings in your

like your 60s or 70s but by the time it comes

out it would have been in your you know top 10

or something. But based on that now it's kind

of a little bit of a crapshoot. Dan what do you

start off with with your number 10? I'm starting

off with the movie probably no one's really talking

about but I'm really interested in it because

like I said that director I feel like is on that.

precipice of making something really great. The

director is Cleo Bernard and she did a movie

I loved called The Selfless Giant a few years

ago, which was one of my favorite films of that

year. She also did a documentary called The Arbor.

I know it got a lot of acclaim. I think even

the people of her film spotting gave it their

Golden Brick Award. Now she's coming out with

another film called Dark River. about the following.

The synopsis of it is the following the death

of her father. Alice returns to her home village

for the first time in 15 years to claim that

the family that she once believed was rightfully

hers. So interesting take. South of China has

this really authentic depiction of kind of the

rural life in the UK. And I'm interested in seeing

that repeated. The only really notable actor

in it is Sean Bean, and there's a good chance

you'll have a Sean Bean movie and he's not going

to die. So that's always a good reason to watch

something. So, but I just I've loved what the

director's done up to this point. So that's really

all I have. There's no release date as of yet,

but it looks like it should be coming out earlier

this year in UK first and coming over over to

the States. But I'm hoping, hoping it's good.

Yeah Definitely on my radio as well. I didn't

have it quite as high as you did, but I think

it's an interesting premise for sure That means

we're back to Amanda. What did you have at your

number nine for this list? See I've got the trap

and this is shown up at number 19 on my my personal

list and That is an ex -con is out for revenge

against a gangster rapper and former friend who

let him take the fall for a robbery they committed

14 years earlier. Okay, so crime, horror, thriller.

I don't know so much about the horror part, but

we're gonna let that slide. Because guess who's

in it? Al Pacino, okay? Benicio del Toro. But

then, here's where it gets weird. Robert Pattinson,

and then Gucci Mane. He's a rapper. I'm guessing

Pacino is playing the Genji rapper? Is that a

safe bet? I think Gucci Mane will be the rapper,

hopefully. They should throw things up. Just

having him in the cast would not have him be

the actual rapper. Pacino just did Danny Collins.

He couldn't be on stage. Come on. I don't know.

I just, I love Benicio Del Toro and everything

he does too. And so anything that he's in, I'm

probably gonna freaking see it. And also, just

the premise seems pretty funny with who's in

it. And, hey. I can't decide if this is going

to be like, what was the film with like Zach

from Saved by the Bell the other year? What was

like him and Kevin Costner, him and Mel Gibson.

I don't remember who was in it with them, but

it was like a big name and then like Zach. And

it was like another action mobster type film.

I couldn't decide if that's like going to be

something that you can't take serious or if it's

going to be like a good type of funny. What was

that movie that we saw with Guy Pearce and Robert

Pattinson a couple of years ago? That was the

Australian film. Yeah, and Robert Pattinson can

do some shit. He's not just the dude in Twilight

anymore. True that. Alright, so the trap might

be a trap. We'll see if that's gonna live up

to your anticipation or not. Matt, what is your

number nine? Alright, so I feel like my number

nine needs an asterisk or five. I don't see a

lot of movies, people, so I tried to find, for

this list, at least 30 movies that I wouldn't

be upset if I, well... Wouldn't be too upset

if I found myself in the theater watching. This

one's still in my 20s, just like me. And my number

nine is My Little Pony the Movie. I don't know,

man. Friendship is magic, I guess. I saw like

a half dozen episodes of the TV show. I watch

a lot of kids programming. It's probably the

number one thing I watch if I'm watching the

television. It's okay. It's not as good as the

people like to make you think. Bronies are...

I don't want to say wrong in their opinions,

but it's not super great, but it is decent kids

programming, and I'm sure the movie won't be

terrible. It'll be interesting. The original

series back in the 80s had a movie, and that

movie did not do very well, but this is a whole

different ball of wax here with the fandom that

is the My Little Pony fandom, so we'll have to

wait and see if it captures some of that magic

that you're talking about. That might be one

of the movies that's interesting to go see in

theaters just for the show that's not on the

screen Right there should be a documentary about

that there are several He's alluding to us watching

bronies together on Netflix at his house a couple

years ago That was we didn't get all the way

through it We're watching the documentary about

bronies Like the original My Little Ponies? No,

mainly the new ones. Friendship is Magic, yeah,

the newest series. How old are these people?

Oh, they were all ages. Adults. Are these those

guys that are saying that they're like the trans

age now or whatever? I saw a guy that was like

a 60 -year -old man that was saying that he was

like a six -year -old girl on the inside. I don't

know about that, but there was some... It's not

so much that. Yeah, it's not so much that but

there were there was some interesting individuals

that were depicted on that Documentary, but like

I said, we didn't make through that through the

whole thing So my number nine is going to be

a film called Lost City of Z This is directed

by James Gray who did the immigrant a while back.

It's got a release date of April 21st based on

the adventures of British Explorer Colonel Percival

faucet who disappeared in 1925 while searching

for a mysterious city in the Amazon. I guess

there's a lot of love for Robert Pattinson because

he's in this one as well as Charlie Hunnam, Tom

Holland, and Sienna Miller. So a pretty young

cast in this one. I just thought it was an interesting

premise. I also felt like I was obligated to

put this on my list since it was on my top 100

last year and it never came out. So I might as

well put it on there again. I like adventure

films. I like Lost Cities and that type of stuff.

The director is decent and it's got a young cast,

so I'm interested to at least see what it will

consist of. So Lost City of Z makes my number

9. Amanda, if you're a fan of Robert Pattinson,

you have multiple films you can go see this.

Well, let's calm down and not say I'm a fan of

Robert Pattinson. I think he's got some potential

as an actor. Don't mean I like the dude. Matt,

this was in your top 30 as well. What about Lost

City of Z made you at least intrigued by it?

Well... I think I like the um the story of the

guy like um because you know there's a lot of

movies coming out that there isn't maybe you

know a trailer or a huge amount of information

but this is based on a true story so there's

plenty there to find if you want and the story

like like this guy's like hunting for lost cities

and stuff and like he's got all this weird team

and he goes missing like it actually sounded

like a fun story I wouldn't mind reading in a

like in a non -fictional book So it's gotta be

real entertaining as a movie if done not dumb.

I think that period has not had as many movies

as they could have because there is so many Like

out of this world, interesting stories about

the early explorers in different areas, you know,

forming America or even in other islands and

different things like that. But especially even

just in America, there's so many crazy stories

about explorers that I'm surprised more movies

haven't been made based on those. I mean, there

has been some, but not like any huge ones that

I'm thinking of right off the top of my head.

I'm probably missing like a huge classic or something

like that. But, Dan, what do you have at your

number nine? Well, apparently I'm really into

River movies because from number nine for me

is Ren River and it's written and directed by

Tyler Sheridan who was notable because he wrote

both the recently Oscar -nominated Hell or High

Water along with Sicario. two great movies that

were also directed by two great directors. So

I'm hoping that he'll be able to direct his first

film and have the same type of success. Also

pretty, pretty solid cast. You have Elizabeth

Olsen, Jeremy Renner, John Barathal. So you have

Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye and Punisher all together

in one movie. So there's also that. And the premise

is an FBI agent teams up with a town's veteran

game. Tracker to investigate a murder that occurred

on a Native American reservation. So that it's

kind of an interesting premise. I think like

the and I Like the setting I'm a big fan of films

that take place in snow and it seems like that's

this will be happening So I I'm looking forward

to it's gonna be somewhat different for child

of Shannon because you're moving from writing

to directing and sometimes that doesn't carry

over and maybe hell or high water and Sicario

were great because of the directors who knows

But I'm liking the cast and I'm hoping that it

lives up to its potential. Actually, it's listed

release date has already passed. I don't know

if it was a limited release or... I think it

was Sundance that came out. Okay. been released

wide yet. Right, so we'll have to wait and see

when a date becomes available for a wide release

for that film, but I definitely had it in my

top 100 as well. I'm interested, I was a little

apprehensive because like you said, he's moving

from the writer's chair to the director's chair

and also directorial debuts sometimes can be

a little bit... risky. I'm not saying that it's

not possible for him to do good, but it's still

something to be interested in and something to

keep your eye out because he's definitely written

some good films. So I like that one as well.

Amanda, that means we're going back to you for

your number eight pick. What do you got? All

righty then. Let me see where this comes in.

18 on your overall list. All right, cool. So

my number eight has to be The Zookeeper's Wife.

Hopefully this is the only movie that makes my

Just eyes explode with tears in 2017 because

I feel like that's all was happening in 2016

I've seen the trailer for this and I've already

been freaking crying and It's just something

that touches home like it's based on a couple

zookeepers For the Warsaw Zoo who helped save

hundreds of people and animals during the Nazi

invasion And that's when my family came over

from Poland and I stayed for a short time in

Warsaw and in Poland. So, I mean, the culture

is already rooted in me. So throw this emotional,

real story at me. I'm definitely going to be

like a mess. I've got Jessica Chastain, Daniel

Bruhl, some other peoples. And I think that it's

definitely going to be a tear -jerker, but a

nice look into... reality and and some of the

brutality but also you know the other side of

that when people try to help. Yeah almost has

a couple hints of something like Schindler's

List or something obviously a similar story where

you have somebody saving them but in a completely

different environment and area but Jessica Chastain's

in it I think most people would be looking forward

to just about any film that she's in so I think

it's a good combination but yeah you're right

you might have a couple tears fall for this one.

Matt, what do you have next? really terrible

jokes about zookeepers. I have on my number eight

is Kong Skull Island. It looks so much better

than that Godzilla movie we got like three years

ago. That movie was so bad. But then again, I

don't remember if the trailers got me excited

or not for that one. But this one actually looks

interesting. It looks fun. It's a different take

on... King Kong, I think, not that I've seen

a bunch of King Kong movies before. It looks

fun, it looks interesting, it looks actiony,

but it also looks like it's got a real nice element

of thriller, which people love, I guess. Yeah,

and definitely some interesting personalities

involved, like we talked about when we were talking

about our box office. I had a I hope it does

well because it's on my box office prediction,

but it's also one of those. Like you said, is

it going to go down the same path as Godzilla

or is it going to become something better than

what we got there? So my number eight pick, I'm

going to go to a film called The Coldest City,

and that is directed by David Leitch. I think

I'm saying that name right, but it might not

be who also was the director for both V for Vendetta

and John Wick. So I'm a fan of both of those

films. So that has me interested for this one.

Days before the fall of the Berlin Wall, the

chase is on to find a list that identifies all

of the Cold War spies on both sides. Stars Charlize

Theron, James McAvoy, John Goodman, and a few

other people. This one's going to be coming out

late July, July 28th. So the Coldest City combination

of a plot and a director that I'm interested

in. So that is why it is in my list for most

anticipated films. Dan? What do you have next?

Nice. Next for me is The Glass Castle, which

is directed by Daniel Creighton, who you'll know

because he did Term 12, which is a movie he talked

way back when. I think I recommended it to you,

Kevin and Amanda. I think Amanda watched it.

I don't remember. We both did, yeah. Yeah, we

both liked it. Yeah, and I love that movie a

great deal. Also stars Brie Larson in So Does

This and Brie Larson in To Me. That was the movie

I feel like she kind of... really broke out as

an actress, so I'm excited to see her in this,

seeing her teaming up with that same director

again. Also includes Woody Harrelson and any

movie with Woody Harrelson gets points and not

only watts and so the pretty stacked cast. But

so yeah, that's kind of why I think it could

be good. You know, it's kind of been. And I think,

you know, she's coming off to winning an Oscar,

or she nominated at least, so a lot to live up

to. Short Turn 12, I think, was arguably one

of the best movies of the decade so far, so hoping

that that can happen again. Yeah, and there's

no release date yet for that one, but it could

be a big year for Woody Harrelson, because he

seems to be doing more films this year than I

think he's done in like... five years combined.

Every film that I was looking at this year seemed

to have Woody Harrelson in it somehow. So this

one's all about a dysfunctional family with all

kinds of different elements, whether it's eccentricity,

alcoholic aspects, some poverty things. So there's

a lot to kind of delve into on that one. So it

should be interesting to see if he can keep up

what he did with Short Term 12 and the magic

that he had with Brie Larson there. Amanda, that

means we're onto your number seven. which was

your number 17 overall. That's weird because

my last one was number 18 and then my number

8. No, 17 and then my number 7. Funny how things

work math. Alright, so that is murder on the

Orient Express. That means the renowned Belgian

detective investigates the murder of a wealthy

American traveling on the Orient Express, which

is the most famous train in the world. Crime,

drama, mystery, I'm about it. Cascos, Daisy Ridley,

Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Penelope Cruz, Michelle

Pfeiffer again, she's coming back. Willem Dafoe,

Judi Dench, so pretty big cast. There's more

to it too. Kenneth Brown and Michael Pena, yeah,

there's a lot of people on this one. Based just

on who's in it, I want to see it. I saw some

video that Josh Gad made on Facebook the other

day when he had... Daisy Ridley come to his trailer

and was like, who is the last Jedi? Has anything

happened to you or Mark Hamill? They just put

out a second one, too. So apparently it's going

to be an ongoing thing. Yeah, so that was funny.

And I was like, what movie are they in together?

And then I looked up and it was this, so it had

to be Melis. Yeah, directed by Kenneth Branagh,

who did Cinderella and the first Thor film, among

a lot of other things Kenneth Branagh has obviously

done. I'm just hoping that this is going to be

something like in the similar vein of what we

got with Magnificent Seven. Remake previous film

that can kind of capture some of that same magic

not everybody loved Magnificent seven, but I'm

a big fan I just watched it for the second time

and liked it even more the second time than I

did the first time so People you're gonna get

flintlocked to the face But anyways, I'm hoping

that it has a similar effect on me So I'm looking

forward to murder on the Orient Express as well

hoping it does not let me down Matt What do you

have next Kevin's looking forward to murder?

My number seven, I think, follows most of what

I said earlier, and that's King Arthur Legend

of the Sword. I've heard there was a lot of rumors

around this movie when it was first announced

like is it gonna be like it was like a what like

a modern take a sci -fi take maybe those are

different movies I don't know I want a good King

Arthur movie we haven't had a good one since

what the 90s so give me a good King Arthur movie

that's just a nice fantasy movie maybe make it

like the Hercules 2014 where it's like is there

magic is there not magic like fucking come on

man I kind of enjoyed that back in the day. It

was like it was a poor man's Lord of the Rings,

but I remember that one. Amanda, you had King

Arthur on your list, too, at your number 20.

So what made you interested in this one? The

trailers, man. Like, OK, so I love Guy Ritchie

as a director. I love a ton of what he's done.

I think he does great stuff. So anything that

he is involved in, I gravitate towards. I also

like the players here. And I think that the trailer

does some really cool stuff. And visually, it

looks really awesome. Like when he's pulling

the sword out of the stone, there's like a physical

reaction to like like the world around him like

you see a shaking you see some cool stuff so

i'm interested in see and seeing you know guy

richie's take on um this this old tale and i'm

excited to to see what new stuff comes about

i'm not i'm not heated on it i like it i'll have

to wait and see if that one pays off as well

for my next one i am going to go with a film

called the book of henry Directed by Colin tomorrow

who obviously a lot of people know about from

Jurassic World Etc But this one's interesting

story concerns a precocious boy Henry and his

younger brother Peter being raised by their single

mother Henry has a crush on their neighbor Christina

the daughter of the police commissioner to protect

Christina from harm at the hands of her father

Henry comes up with a plan to rescue her and

that he writes down in a book and There's a lot

of other stuff here, but the interesting thing

here I think is from the child child actors involved

because we have two people that have made a name

for themselves in the last couple years, that

being Jacob Tremblay from The Room, and Jaden

Lieberher, who was in both, I believe, St. Vincent,

if I'm getting those films right, or he was in

Midnight Special. I don't know if that's the

same kid that was in both of those films or not.

Also has Naomi Watts, Sarah Silverman, Bobby

Moynihan, a couple other people. So this one's

just in June 16th. I'm just kind of interested

to see how these two kids... Kind of play off

of each other and it seemed like kind of a little

bit of a suspense thriller type Situation was

how the mom gets involved as well. So the book

of Henry looking forward to at June 16th, Dan

Yeah, I had that someplace on my list as well.

I mean to really solid child actress there So

it's pretty cool. Next for me is the circle which

is directed by James Han Salt, who has done films

like Spectacular Now and End of the Tour, which

were really two solid, like really small and

intimate movies that kind of took, you know,

Spectacular Now was a really unique take on the

coming of age films. End of the Tour was really

hard to really quantify it. Just really two guys

talking, but ended up being quite good. Circle

of Sentence sounds a little bit different. It's

about a woman who lands a job with a powerful

tech company called The Circle, where she becomes

involved with a mysterious man. I'm assuming

that woman is Emma Watson and also stars Tom

Hanks. I hope that doesn't mean we get a Tom

Hanks Emma Watson somewhat relationship because

that would make the entire world feel awkward.

It's like seeing your favorite uncle and sister.

It's like, no, no, that shouldn't happen. Yeah,

but also has John Boyega, Bill Paxton, and Patton

Oswald. We know you like Patton Oswald. He's

great. I love Patton. Who doesn't like Patton

Oswald? I wouldn't say anybody didn't like Patton

Oswald. Dan, this was on my list last year as

well, so this was on my most anticipated list

for 2016. It does actually have a release date

of April 28th. The trailer is out. I have not

watched the trailer yet, but I love the pedigree

that's there. Yeah, absolutely. Check out the

trailer, it definitely shows you the vibe. All

right, Amanda, a good vibe or bad vibe? Yeah,

I would say, but I was reading the synopsis,

I was a little freaked out, but I didn't see

any weird romance stuff happening between them

in the trailer. The classic either or question

and you answered with yes. Yeah. So what do you

have at your number six, which by the way, What's

your number 16 overall? Booyah. My number 6 is

it comes at night. Father will stop at nothing

to protect his wife and son from a level of mysterious

presence terrorizing them outside their doorstep.

This is Joel Edgerton in Horror Slash Mystery.

So not only is a whore, which I like, it's Joel

Edgerton who I'm really starting to become a

fan of. He is something. And this is uh, we haven't

seen the film yet from 2016, but a lot of people

were very high on on krisha or krisha And this

is the director that did that and what a movie

Krisha krisha krisha. Um, but it's a it's one

that we have to check out because I think it

would be up your alley is kind of like a semi

horror film from uh 2016 that a lot of people

were raving about so we'll have to check that

out in anticipation of this one I wouldn't really

call it a horror movie. It's really it's it's

uh, it's basically this lady who goes to a family

gathering and she's suffering from depression

and addiction. I mean, I guess there's horrible

elements, but like, I think horror influence

more so than horror in the actual genre. Gotcha.

All right, Matt, let's hear you talk about your

number six. All right, guys. I was born in the

80s, which means I was raised in the 90s, so

90s nostalgia goes a long way, even for things

I didn't watch specifically. And so for my number

6, which is number 12 on my list, which shows

you just how few movies I had on my list that

just weren't giant blockbusters, is Baywatch.

I don't know, you always - How can you not anticipate

more of The Rock? That's exactly what I was going

to go with. Like, it's got two of the best things.

It's got The Rock and it's got humor. Like, I

fucking love those two things. So Baywatch is

going to come out and it's probably going to

be funny, which is really what it should be because,

like, who's going to be taking fucking bikini

babes running on the beach seriously? Especially

in this day and age where I feel like we're more

enlightened than we were 30 years ago. 25 years.

I mean, maybe he'll have a drunk scene where

he's wrecking a burrito instead of a burger.

I don't know. The Hoff, man. I love it. If he

had a cameo where he was acting ridiculous, that

would be the best thing ever. You know if he

doesn't have a cameo in this, dude is washed

up beyond anything. He's waiting for the sequel

if they watch nights when they open up a private

eye investigation company. That's when he's going

to show up. It could be... It could be like Star

Trek where, what's his name? They should just

have him have a cameo, but he drives up in Kit.

So he drives up in the Knight Rider car, but

they don't reference it. Shatner wanted to be

in the Star Trek new ones, but they wouldn't

let him. It could be that they don't want the

Hoff on screen. I love it. All right, before

we go and turn this into an entire Baywatch,

because I think we could keep going off of that

one, let's go to the next one for my list, which

is going to be a film called Suburbicon. Weird

title, but this one is intriguing for a number

of different reasons. Number one, George Clooney's

directing it. Number two, The Coen brothers are

both listed in as far as writing credits for

this, and it almost sounds like a Coen brother

film when you talk about the cast and the plot.

I don't know if that's the vibe they're going

for, if it's going to be something completely

different, but you have Matt Damon, Josh Brolin,

Oscar Isaac, and Julianne Moore, at least the

four that I saw listed. A crime mystery set in

the quiet family town of Suburbicon during the

1950s, where the best and worst of humanity is

hilariously reflected through the deeds of seemingly

ordinary People when a home invasion turns deadly

a picture perfect family turns to blackmail revenge

and betrayal So I don't know exactly what vibe

they're going for This is one that a trailer

would be huge as far as impacting where it should

really be on my list But i'm intrigued enough

by the players involved That I will definitely

be keeping an eye out for more on suburbicon

as it becomes available So that is my number

six. Dan. Yeah, I that's way I want to put it

higher, but I love good night and good luck Good

luck with which George going directed with his

other films like Monuments Man. And what was

the other one that he did? Oh, The Ides of March

for someone they had. They're OK. They were great.

So. That's my only hesitation. You talked about

earlier how Woody Harrelson is in everything

while he's in my next most anticipated film,

which is called Wilson, which has actually been

released already. It debuted at Sundance, but

it's going to be coming out on March 21st, 24th.

It's directed by Craig Johnson, who did Skeleton

Twins, which I really enjoyed that had Bill Hader

and Kristen Wiig in this. What's really great

about this, too, is based upon a graphic novel

written by Daniel Close. Claude said who you

might know his name because he also wrote the

graphic novel Ghost World and a few others. He

also wrote Patience last year which was one of

my favorite graphic novels of 2016 and the premise

of it basically is Woody Harrelson plays this

neurotic kind of honest middle -aged man. Sounds

like he has like a touch of possibly Asperger's

or something of that nature and or basically

he just has no social cues whatsoever and he's

trying to reunite with his estranged wife and

potential teenage daughter. So Woody Helson to

me is like one of our best actors. He has a lot

of range. He can be funny. He can be frightening.

And I think this is going to be a role that he

can really let loose in. So that's really why

I'm looking forward to it. And the trailer looks

pretty solid as well. Yeah, I'm looking forward

to it as well. I think it's a Woody Harrelson's

year to screw up here He's got all kinds of options

to show us the different sides of his acting

repertoire So should be fun ride Amanda. What

do you have at your number five, which is not

your number 15 overall? No, it is my number 14

though Number five I've got the mummy with TC

Tom Cruise and uh definitely a little different

vibe than um you know the original series that

we are i guess that was a remake too wasn't it

the mummy i don't know the mummy's been a character

that's been around for a few years we'll say

that but this isn't a different time period this

looks to be you know more modern times and uh

it's i would say it's still along the same lines

not too far if you see them all gently like that

was awful so this has got to be better than that

one this is Let's see, an ancient princess, I

can't say that word princess, is awakened from

her crypt beneath the desert, bringing with her

malevolence, grown over millennia, and terrors

that defy human comprehension. I like the sound

of that. It's got Tom Cruise, of course, Sophia...

Lotella, Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll. I'm not

sure if that's Dr. Jekyll slash Mr. Hyne, because

that would be pretty cool. I like that character.

And Jake Johnson. So I'm willing to give TC a

chance. Are you like on a level with him? Yeah.

Are you in Scientology? Not yet, but you know,

I'm working up to make enough money to where

they'll let me in. Please don't. All right. The

Mummy coming June 9th or June 19th, one of those

two, right in the mids of the summer blockbusters.

We'll have to see how that works out. That means,

Matt, it's time for you and your number five.

My number five, other than, you know, a comic

book movie or a Star Wars movie, is probably

the number one most... And I don't want to say

anticipate. Easiest to guess what I'm going to

say. Because it's Pirates of the Caribbean and

from the first time I was on this podcast I've

been talking about how I love the Pirates of

the Caribbean movies. They just keep getting

more and more and more and more ridiculous and

I love that. I hope this next one's entirely

off the rails. It looks real serious from the

like one trailer I've seen a dozen times for

like the last year. But I'm sure it's not going

to be that serious. But I mean if they take it

in a hardcore like pirate swashbuckler fantasy

element. direction that could be fun too like

i'm just used to a crazy pirates that that last

one was was insane and i loved it so fingers

crossed i'm sure i'll like it either way This

is my number nine like I I'm excited for this

too I think it's been a while since we've got

one of these and they are all Really like bombastic

and awesome and all these really cool characters

even the side characters You've kind of you know

grown to to love some of them too because you've

seen them for a while now I think I was I wouldn't

I pops out of time. Well that dude And so I think

that it's going to be exciting to get back into

it and see Johnny Depp in his element, really.

Johnny Depp is in his element in these films.

To me, I still think it's fun to watch. I know

some people have grown tired of it and whatnot,

but I like these films as well. So this one's

coming out May 26th or May 28th, somewhere in

late May. So not too far away here. For my next

pick, I am going to go to a film called The Beguiled.

The Beguiled is directed by Sofia Coppola, who

did Lost in Translation, which I was a big fan

of. You got Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten

Dunst, Ellie Fanning. L. Fanning? Did I say Ellie?

This one's coming out June 23rd while imprisoned

in a Confederate girls boarding school an injured

Union soldier cons his way into each of the lonely

woman's hearts causing them to turn on each other

and eventually on him so it sounds like we got

a little bit of a thriller type aspect going

on here some drama and I'm a fan of Sofia Coppola

so I'm interested to see what she puts out here

with with this one and it's Colin Farrell's been

showing what he's capable of and he's uh he doesn't

get enough credit for his acting chops, I think

that he deserves. So hopefully more people can

get to see this, especially after his appearance

in the lobster and whatnot. Maybe more people

are ready to take him more serious than they

did before. So the Beguiled coming out in June,

that would be my number fifth on this list. So

Dan. Number fifth? Number fifth. I can't speak

anymore. Dan, take over. Number fifth. Next from

my number fifth. that is another comic book movie

but a little bit more well -known comic book

movie and that is Logan. I love the X -Men franchise

uh you know X -Men Apocalypse was the one disappointing.

The first Wolverine Origins is a god -awful movie

we don't talk about and I actually like the Wolverine

uh it It kind of went crazy at the end with the

Power Rangers Silver Samurai. That was kind of

disappointing, but I'm loving everything I'm

seeing with Logan. I love the setting. I love

how it's taking place in somewhat of an alternate

future. I love the Old Man Logan comic. This

is not really that. They've taken elements of

it. Patrick Stewart being salty and old is going

to be great. And, you know, in X -23... And I'm

little only concern to me is like how the villains

gonna come out because we really haven't seen

anything Regarding a villain which makes me think

maybe they don't have a great one But it looks

like it could be great and it's Hugh Jackman's

last time as Wolverine. So Supposedly we'll see

so And the director on this one, James Mangold,

he did Walk the Line 310 to Yuma, a couple films

that I fairly like quite a bit. And this one

you don't have to wait very long for because

it's coming out here in March, March 3rd. So

right around the corner. Matt, you also had Logan

on your list. Anything you wanted to add to that?

Yeah, X -23 is one of my favorite. like X -Men

characters I like what they're doing with the

trailers I think it looks fun and I I'm 90 %

certain that if not not the mastermind clearly

but probably the climactic fight is gonna be

Dakin Dakin Dakin Wolverine's son, although we

don't know what we're gonna do here, they'll

make it a clone or whatever. He's evil Wolverine.

And I think that that's what's gonna be the big

set piece in the end of the second act, beginning

of the third act. I think, uh... I think it's

gonna be good. Alright, so some anticipation

for Logan. Amanda, let's get right into what

you were saying in your criteria that genre plays

a big part of your anticipated list, and you

have an example of that here with your number

four on this unique list, which was your number

13 overall. Come on, but faux is insidious chapter

four. There's no plot released yet, but that's

okay because they have terrified me to my core

with every other installment. Lynn Shea is back

as Elise Rainer, and it looks like we're gonna

get a glimpse of Elise while she's growing up

because of the cast list, shows girls playing

her as a child, and then as a teenager, so it

should be cool to see more of Elise's experiences

as a medium growing up, and I think I am definitely

not gonna be able to sleep for a while after

seeing this. I just got over Insidious Chapter

3. because I saw the new Ouija movie and I was

scared of that. So I went from being scared of

Insidious Chapter 3 to Ouija Origin of Evil because

it was terrifying. So by the time I get over

that it'll be time to see this. So I'm just,

yeah. She watches all these films by herself.

That's probably why I'm freaked out. Alright,

let's get another fun dose of nostalgia, Matt,

with your number four pick. Oh man, my number

four pick was um... Don't I didn't even know

it was coming out until I did like Search for

what's coming out next year, and I really really

really don't know what to expect But I'm pretty

sure it's the first ever VHS movie. I ever bought

with my own money, which is Jumanji I Like it.

Yeah, I mean we don't get David Allen Greer I

don't think which is sad, but like what Jack

Black and the Rock right the Rock he's in every

group He's in everything. He's so good. Yeah,

why not more of him? Like, it's supposed to be

a comedy. It's supposed to be set inside the

board. I'm not quite sure how they're going to

play it. I haven't seen a trailer, but I'm going

to enjoy them probably. There we go. I'm enjoying

going to this next pick, Matt, because I'm pretty

confident that you're not aware that this movie

has been made. Because if you were aware of it,

I'm pretty sure it would be in your top five.

So maybe I'm incorrect, but for my next pick

I'm going to go with a film called The Masterpiece

and let me just read the plot synopsis for you.

An aspiring actor in Hollywood meets an enigmatic

stranger by the name of Tommy Wiseau. The meeting

leads the actor down a path nobody could have

predicted, creating the worst movie ever made.

This is starring James Franco, Dave Franco, Seth

Rogen. Kate Upton, Sharon Stone. This is a movie

version based on the book The Disaster Artist,

which I know you have read, which was written

by Greg Sestero. And here's another little kicker

for you. Tommy Wiseau is contractually obligated

to have a cameo in this film. And this is a quote

from James Franco. I'm editing it now. It turned

out great. I play Tommy Wiseau. My brother plays

Greg Sestero. the other actor in the room. Tommy

was involved. Contractually, we had to give him

a cameo opposite me, which was very weird because

I was playing him. I don't know if that'll end

up in the movie or not, but it was a surreal

experience to say the least. So, Matt, what do

you think of the prospects of this film? So I

knew that this movie was coming, but I expected

it to go by the name The Disaster Artist, because

why would you change the name of a book? So,

yeah, I'm... real excited, but tempered excitement

because I know it's going to be making fun of

something that I love on a weird level. I have

a love -hate relationship with the room. I can

watch that movie every day. It's weird. Greg's

hysteria. I don't know if this helps you or not,

but he is has played a heavy part in the making

of this film as well. He not only will be in

it as his own cameo, but I'm pretty sure he's

been working alongside with them. I don't know

if that helps or hurts the person in your opinion

or not. I don't know either, because I was like

he seems like a weird sort of. almost like a

battered woman syndrome where it's like some

days he's like I love Tommy and I love everything

we did and some days he's like I need this out

of my life because it's ruining my life and I

don't know which is the correct one and which

one he's going to be on set but i mean i will

see this in theaters if anyone will go with me

i would go with you in a heartbeat and regardless

matt if it ends up being good or bad it's just

going to add to the another piece to the library

that is the room so i i don't think that can

be a bad thing it's more uh fodder for people

to talk about so uh it's my number four on my

list dan what do you got next uh next i'm going

to another you know well -known director and

with edgar wright and his movie baby driver uh

it's The movie, the premise of it is after being

conned into working for a crime boss, a young

getaway driver finds himself taking part in a

heist that's doomed to fail. So Edgar Wright,

of course, the... director of Shot of the Dead,

Hot Fuzz, Scott Bouldingham vs. the World, stars

John Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, Flea from

Wet -Ass Chili Peppers, so that should get many

people in the door, but it's Edgar Wright doing

a heist movie, and you think about it, he was

the one slated to do Ant -Man, which was kind

of a heist film, so now he's kind of taking that,

and I guess... Taking some of those ideas and

bring you into baby driver. I love it out. I

love you ever to write his style He's it's very

flashy interesting. So I'm really looking forward

to this side that obviously he's stepping away

from Simon Pegg and Nick Ross But eventually

I guess you have to do that on occasion. So sure.

Yeah It does have a release date of August 11th

So a little bit longer wait, but a lot of people

definitely anticipating the next from him. All

right, Amanda Only three left on here on our

unique list. I know this one has one reason and

one reason alone why it is on your list. We'll

talk about your number three here, which is in

reality your number 11. It's got two reasons,

okay? And that is the Shape of Water, an otherworldly

story set against the backdrop of Cold War -era

America circa 1963. This is a drama, fantasy,

romance, thriller, slash war, okay? The kicker

here is... Well, that title could be as long.

I guess you can have multiple genres just in

the title. But the director is my boy, Guillermo

del Toro. The other thing that's kind of drawing

me in here is Michael Shannon is set to be in

this. So Michael Shannon in a Guillermo del Toro

movie. So let's do this. More fantasy. I don't

know what genre you listed will be more prevalent

because you listed like seven. So it's hard to

say. I think fantasy would hopefully be the biggest

one there, but we'll have to wait and see how

that turns out. But definitely an intriguing

film there. Matt, what do you have at your number

three? My number three, I'm almost sad that it's

on my list. Actually, I'm sorry, I said my top

three are on my list just because I expected

these to just be on everyone's list because they're,

you know, the big ones, although not the biggest.

Number three is Justice League. Come on guys.

We should give DC another chance Amanda also

had this on her list. So you two both had it.

She had it at number six. You had it at number

four That's why it's on your list to speak about

but you guys can both take turns here Matt Why

are we anticipating Justice League? No, I did

it DC maybe this time Maybe this time ever Why

not because you don't give a shit about any of

the characters that's why pretty sure and I've

been looking I've I think this has been rumored

since I was literally in high school pretty sure

that was a long time ago almost three years guys

So I I've really been ready for this and I've

been like bummed out every time they hear it's

gonna happen and then that you're nothing about

it this time it's fucking happening we know that

We know who's going to be in it. And you can't

stop it. It's happening. And I just hope that

it doesn't let me down. I'm a little pissed that

we're getting Justice League before we even,

you know, see all these individual players and

know what their story is. You know what I mean?

Like, I feel like this is a coming together movie.

Why are we getting coming together movie when

we don't even know anything about these people?

But we'll see. I think it's going to be, you

know, we're going to get we've already got little

glimpses of them. So now we're gonna see them

and it's gonna gear us up really to find out

more about each character. I can't we can't bring

this up without me at least referencing this

and then I wanted to get your opinion should

we be even more worried about these DC films

now with the news that Ben Affleck has said at

least stated that he is stepping out of not only

the director chair but the he's not even gonna

play Batman now is that what I heard going forward?

When the hell did that happen? Really? I heard

something that said that he was at least, he

was either stepping away from it and not gonna

act in it or he wasn't gonna direct in it. I

thought he was just directing it. I just, I know

he wasn't directing it and I wasn't, I was curious

if that was any relation to the failure of Live

by Night and how that was critically panned and

did a horribly so. I wonder if it was more of

a mutual decision, who knows. I don't know, it

does make me appreciate Marvel and the fact that

like, They're how tight their ship is they have

directors leave obviously they've had that same

problem, but it does seem like their stuff gets

done on time where DC I feel like every every

movie they've had gets pushed back like Justice

League was supposed to come out in March or I

think earlier than now it's not not to November,

but I don't know I mean As long as he's not replaced

by Zack Snyder, I'll be happy, okay? I'm sure

Zack Snyder will be raising his hand and saying

I'll do that too. And they're gonna say sit the

puck down, Zack. Nobody tells Zack Snyder what

to do apparently in the DC world. For my number

three, I'm gonna go with a film called Life.

This is one that I might be biting myself or

kicking myself later because it might not be

as good as I'm hoping it is, but a couple different

things here. Number one, it's a... It's not necessarily

the director who did Daniel Espinosa who did

Safe House, but the writer did the screenplay

for Deadpool and Zombieland and I was a fan of

both of those films. We also have Jake Gyllenhaal,

Ryan Reynolds, and Rebecca Ferguson, which is

a pretty good cast. I think most people have

probably seen the trailer for this, so I don't

need to go over the plot synopsis too much. Obviously,

it's a science fiction film where they discover

some evidence, the first evidence of extraterrestrial

life, and then obviously, shenanigans ensue.

So I'm just a sucker for science fiction films,

so I will watch them. I know half the time they're

good and half the time they're not, and it's

like not even in the middle. It's either like

they're real good or they're just ab - to the

garbage, and I'm hoping this one is at least

serviceable because I like the people involved

and I like the premise. So Life coming out here

real soon, March 24th is the next one on my list.

I just think it looks too much like a little

film called Aliens, okay, or Alien? Yeah, I think

that's what people are worrying about too. I

don't know if they're, hopefully it doesn't quite

go that route, I'm hoping, but maybe it's going

to be called. Something is, some other life form

that's not human is on a ship. I'm hoping instead

of going like an actual like monster type route

like aliens did not that was bad but I'm hoping

it goes for something else like on a smaller

level or maybe it like makes the the actual individuals

like gives them some type of messes with their

minds and they're turning against each other

or something yeah but it was not like a thing

it was you know I mean it was like Fucking amoeba,

so it's not as scary as we already have an alien

movie coming out alien covenant. I We can have

a science fiction film every month and I'd be

fine with it. So I'm game so I like a lot of

what you're saying regarding people making it

the trailer just I don't know it just didn't

made me a little bit worried I would have said

the same thing about the premise for a zombie

land or Things like that too and I ended up liking

that film a lot more than I thought so I'm hoping

that's gonna be the same thing true true My next

movie is downsizing directed by Alexander Payne

who I feel like is the director just on fire

recently I kind of love everything he's done

from a black chin to sideways Descendants of

Nebraska, which he blasted in 2013, which I don't

just talking about Nebraska makes me want to

go see it I love that movie downsizing it just

the prep. It sounds like i don't know how they're

gonna make this like i'm like that's my only

hesitation because it's it's a social satire

in which a guy realizes he would have a better

life if he were to freak himself i like i don't

i don't know how that At all makes sense in any

way sound like anything he has done before like

I'm a huge fan of descendants and a huge fan

of Nebraska and I'm trying to figure out how

he does this Like this one to me sounds more

like an Edgar Wright movie in a way, right? And

the cast is pretty crazy to Matt Damon Jason

Sudeikis Kristoff Waltz Alec Baldwin Neil Patrick

Harris Kristen Wiig. So there's pretty pretty

extensive cast list Alec so like I own my only

hesitation is just like how is this going to

work but uh the you know the pine's also doing

the screenplay as well so and so is uh jim taylor

who he's been he worked with a lot in the past

so pretty much in all of his great movies so

i'm hoping i'm hoping nothing's really been released

yet regarding trailers and i don't think there's

a full release date uh it says december 22nd

um so this could be one that ends up getting

pushed back to next year but as of right now

it's set to come out around christmas time so

Dan, are you hoping this is more or less like

Honey I Shrunk the Kids? Oh, man. If we can somehow

get, what's his name back? Rick Moranis? Rick

Moranis? Then more. I mean, at least someone

swimming in Cheerios. You gotta get that back.

Every generation needs a film like that, right?

I have no idea. I need to see a trailer for this

before I can decide how much I'm anticipating

it because I have no idea what direction. But

I trust that he's going to do something positive

based on his filmography so far. So, Amanda,

second to last one for this section of the episode.

So what do you got at number two, which is technically

your number 10? Yes, sir. That's Ghost in the

Shell. Cyborg policewoman attempts to bring down

a nefarious computer hacker. I haven't seen slash

read the manga, but it's Scar Joe and it looks

pretty dope. So I'm excited for something that's

this much sci -fi. with super cool effects that

look pretty seamless and flawless. And then ScarJo,

who has proven herself in the sci -fi movies.

I'm a big fan of the trailer, too. I have no

knowledge of this property whatsoever, which

makes me probably in the minority. But I think

the trailer looks really good. And Matt, you

also had this on your list at number 14. So maybe

you know more about Ghost in the Shell or what

made you anticipate this one. Yeah, I mean, I've

seen the original movie and I watched most if

not all of Stand Alone Complex, the ongoing anime.

It's a great franchise, like I like the things

that you get. I'm more concerned about the Hollywood

take on it. I'm not gonna be one of those people

that like ah she should be Asian she shouldn't

be Scarlett Johansson Because I mean because

like it does that that's not important. I mean

that's not one That's not how Hollywood works

like you got to have a you know a lead to sell

a movie That's how movies work, but then to uh

like they're in robot bodies and at this point

She might be in her like 30th, so maybe she's

been Asian 25 times. You don't know so like I

don't know, I'm excited a little bit. I'm also

a little worried. I haven't seen much of the

things, but what I've seen hasn't been swaying

me one way or the other. I watched this side

by side of her being put in this body, the anime

versus the trailer, and it looks exact, pretty

spot on. Alright, so Matt, with your last pick,

you went into the world of DC. What do you got

for your number two pick? Yeah, that, Wonder

Woman. DC, maybe that time instead of the other

one. I like the synopsis that you're giving on

these. Obviously we talked both about Justice

League and Wonder Woman when we were talking

about Vox Office. So if you haven't listened

to that episode, go back and you can get even

more of our thoughts on those films. Double dose

of DC, hoping for the best. For my number two,

my number two and my number one are going to

be strictly on my list. basically because of

the director so these were picks that will have

a heavy influence from that and my number two

pick is going to be a film called mute which

is being directed by Duncan Jones who did a film

called moon which if you have not seen it please

go see it immediately. And somewhere I read that

this is somewhat supposed to be, I don't know

why it's all of a sudden a thing to call things

like a spiritual sequel, but people have said

that Mute is going to be somewhat of a spiritual

sequel to Moon, which is weird to me because

it doesn't seem like it has anything to do with

it, but I guess we'll go with that. But Berlin,

40 years from today, Berlin city of immigrants

where East crashes into West, and there's a mute

bartender. who has one reason and one reason

only for living there and she's disappeared.

So there's a weird search and there's all kinds

of stuff going on. Sam Rockwell, Alexander Skarsgard,

Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux. I was a huge fan of

Moon so I will watch anything Duncan Jones does

and it's been a while so I'm interested in Mute

and that is my number two pick. Dan? My number

to pick, I'm going to go with a person who directed

my favorite film from 2016, The Lobster, with

the killing of a sacred deer, directed by Yogo

Santhimos, who also did Dogtooth. With him, you

never really know what to expect just off the

premise, but... based off a teenager's attempt

to bring a brilliant surgeon into his dysfunctional

family takes an unexpected turn. So who knows

what that means? It could mean a lot of things

with him. He's teaming again with Colin Farrell,

which I think is great because Colin Farrell

was great, and Little Officer, also Nicole Kinnaman

in Alicia Silverstone. But I'd look at Yoko Samus

the most. I think he has two really good movies.

Alps' second film was... Not very good, but I'm

hoping that this will be another strong contender

And you know, it's it's doesn't really have much

regarding release date or trailers or anything

of that nature. So But it seems like they are

guessing that will be coming out in the camp

so fast that uh... on the condo festival in the

in the summer time so i think regardless of the

people are if you fall down on the side of the

senate film is not being good at this moment

something bad i think there's no doubt that it

will be interesting either way so regardless

of how you end up uh... going down on that one

so that'll be an interesting pick we only have

time for one more pick in this side of the break

as we go through our unique list so amanda what's

your last pick and it was Number one here, and

number seven on your overall bid. This is the,

let's see, Valerian and the City of a Thousand

Planets. I didn't even know about this until

like a month ago when I saw the trailer and then

I was like, what is this? Because I want it now.

And it's time traveling agent Valerian is sent

to investigate a galactic empire along with his

partner, Laura Lyne. The director of this also

did The Fifth Element and Lucy, which I liked

both of those. But the cast, Kara Delavaney from

The Suicide Squad, the awful character from that

movie, and Dane DeHaan, which I'm a big fan of,

Ethan Hawke, Clive Owen, Rihanna, where are we

in the house, and John Goodman's voice. And I

think that this is another one where the effects

look... amazing and it's kind of got this video

game feel almost too because he like shoots these

portals. I'm like this is portals but it's like

a human instead of like a robot and it just looks

super cool and awesome and unique and I'm super

excited for it. Alright Matt this was also on

your list at number 18. What makes you excited

for Valerian? If I haven't already said it, my

order on my list was probably not actually the

right order. This should have been way higher.

This movie looks just great. I ran into it when

I was doing the box office predictions, probably

the same time Amanda did, and it looks so good.

Of course, it also looks a lot like that one

movie that was terrible from last year. What

came out this time last year? Well, two years

ago, it would have been Jupiter Ascending. Yeah,

that one. Yeah. Was that two years ago already?

That was booty though. That didn't look nearly

as awesome and intense as this does. As cool

as we thought that was going to be, I'm pretty

sure this is going to top that. I hope it's not

on the same level. No, me either, because that

movie was a bunch of great ideas smashed into

one mess. And this one could... This one could

go either one of those ways. It could be, you

know, I'd want to say it could be the new Star

Wars or Star Trek, but we have a new Star Wars

and a new Star Trek in Star Wars and Star Trek.

So maybe it could be the modern version of Guardians

of the Galaxy. I don't know. It looks fun. I

want to see it. Yeah should be interesting man

your next pick I'm as shocked as you are that

this is not gonna be part of our common films

because you and I are the only two that had this

one on our list in our top 30 so why don't you

go ahead and reveal what your number one is for

this part that's real weird because my number

one I guess is spider -man homecoming like it's

spider -man like spider -man is he's been the

most six months I feel like the most successful

hero movie character ever why are we not super

happy about this one that looks also good Yeah,

I'm a big fan of this one, too, based on the

character that's playing him, based on the connections

with the Marvel Universe, based on Robert Downey

Jr. The character? He's a real dude. Tom Holland?

Did I say character? Yeah. Sorry, the actor that's

playing him. So I'm super excited for this one.

I think I've always been, Spider -Man's always

been one of my favorite comic book characters,

so I'm looking forward to seeing what they do

with this one. I don't know if it's just a fatigue

maybe for some people, because it's going to

be the sixth Spider -Man movie here since...

We've all been growing up, but I think it's going

to be a turn in the right direction. And I think

it's going to have a good balance of different

elements from the action to the humor, et cetera.

So I'm with you. It was number 23 on my list.

It's 32 on mine. The only reason it didn't get

any higher is because I feel like I don't I don't

love the look of Vulture. I mean, it could be

better within the movie. And I'm still worried

by the fact that Sony's still there lurking in

the background. So like. I'm curious what influence

they still do have. I enjoyed Tom Holland in

Civil War. You know, it's got a strong cast and

I guess maybe it is partially just being, you

know, coming off of Amazing Spider -Man 2, which

I thought wasn't all that great. So that's a

little bit for me, but I'm so I'm going to go

see it out of all the movies. That'll probably

be one of the few I actually do see in the theater.

But like you said, I think the other ones I'm

anticipating a little bit more because it's something

different, unique. That's why I'm really looking

forward to Logan, because it looks to me like,

well, that's really a new direction for the X

-Men films that I can get excited about. Yeah,

for sure. Alright, for my number one pick on

this section, I am going to do a couple things

here that kind of drew me to this one. Like I

said, the director is Alex Garland and the film

is Annihilation. For those of you that don't

know, he did a film called Ex Machina a couple

years ago, which I'm getting eye rolls from Amanda

from. A biologist signs up for a dangerous secret

expedition where the laws of nature don't apply.

Sounds similar, vain, at least similar kind of

concept for Alex Garland starring... Oscar Isaac

as well as Natalie Portman Tessa Thompson and

Jennifer Jason Lee. So I am all on board for

this one. I love Jack's Machina. It was my number

one film for that year and Annihilation hopefully

will be at least a similar vein whether it's

best film of the year or not for me at least

hopefully it's a good serviceable film that might

make my top 10 or top 20 is my hopes for this

one. So Annihilation from Alex Garland is my

number one pick. Dan, what do you have? My number

one pick is a movie that does not even have a

title yet, but it will soon, and it's Paul Thomas

Anderson's next film starring Daniel Day -Lewis,

based upon his fashion in the London world. And

I know it's hard to tell by looking at me, but

I'm not that much into fashion, but I do love

myself some Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day

-Lewis. I love Daryl B. Blood. I wasn't the hugest

fan of Inherent Vice. I thought there were some

good elements to it, but as a whole, it just

seemed... too convoluted and confusing, but I

love a lot of his other movies. So I there's

always a chance you're going to see billions

when he comes out with a movie. It's it is currently

filming. There have been like picture stills

released. So there's a good chance it's coming

out this year. And, you know, Daniel Day -Lewis

is like, you know, he's like a leap year and

he comes on comes around once every four years.

So anytime he's in a movie, it's something to

see. Yeah, I'm with you a hundred percent I guess

the only reason I hadn't put it on there just

because I hadn't I don't know why I need information

about it like you said Daniel Day -Lewis usually

means greatness so I'm all for watching anything

he's in but just with no really information based

on the movie no title no trailers no plot synopsis

other than the kind of the setting goes I was

just a little unsure of where I would have to

put this on my list so I just didn't I it's number

12 on my list so I just wasn't sure Where a true

spot would be until I see something more so definitely

anticipating Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel

Day -Lewis making a reconnection now Alright,

so that is it for our unique list. We're gonna

take a quick break and then we come back We're

gonna quickly go over the films that we had in

common So it was films that showed up on either

all four of our list or films that showed up

on three of the four of our list So we'll be

right back with those films after the break Hey

guys it's Dr. Masolo and Hard Candy Mandy and

we just wanted to let you guys know about another

podcast out there that we both think you would

all enjoy. It's one of both of our favorite shows

to listen to and is none other than the True

Bromance podcast. True Bromance is a movie podcast

hosted by longtime friends Hiro and Barry and

if you like to smile, laugh, and just be genuinely

entertained while listening to movie talk then

this is definitely the right show for you. Each

week, the guys break down a recently released

movie, and not only do they tie in the movie

that week to the beers that they are drinking

during the show, but they also tie it into a

real fun top and bottom five lists associated

with that movie. It's a blast hearing both sides

of these lists, and it definitely makes them

unique amongst all other movie review podcasts.

So we definitely want to recommend all of you

guys to go check out their show. Just search

out the True Bromance podcast on iTunes, Stitcher,

and all other podcast platforms. And if you listen

via iTunes, do us a favor and leave them a five

-star review. And don't forget to let them know

that the Cinema Geeks sent you. On the Simplistic

Reviews podcast, we talk movies. We talk TV We

talk Hello Julie, what the heck are you doing?

Trying to make our spot sound more exciting by

adding explosions Yeah, I'm pretty sure you could

have got the point across with sound effects.

Not the real thing Download the show on iTunes

or if simplistic reviews dot blog spot dot com

I'm sure your insurance company will cover that.

No, they won't. No, they probably won't Hey you

guys, this is the mask and you guys are listening

to the geek cast radio network and you know what?

You are smokin'! Thanks for sticking with us.

As we said before the break, now we're going

to get into those films that we... commonly are

anticipating. And the way we did this is I just

took the rankings that we have for each of these

films and averaged them out. So that's the order

we will go in. We're going to start with the

10 films that three of us ranked and then we'll

get into the only three films that all four of

us ranked. Interesting that only three films

made it across all four lists. So that just shows

how many films are coming out here in 2017 that

have differing levels of interest in different

ways. So let's start with our first pick. Average

rank of 17. It was Amanda you had this highest

at 12 and that would be Kingsman The sequel the

Golden Circle. Is that what it's called? Yeah,

I keep thinking like the Golden Shower for whatever

reason but that's what it reminds me of. What?

Does this take place in Russia too? I think R

Kelly's gonna be in it. I'm pretty sure R Kelly's

gonna be in it too. Taking the role of who was

in it the first time. Colin Firth? No, the girl

in the jail cell. Wasn't she a music person?

No, she was like a princess. Iggy Azalea was

supposed to be in it, but that didn't show up.

Gotcha. But yeah, I think that the action in

the first one was pretty cool. She was busy doing

Fast 6 or 7. I'm looking forward to it, but I

can't get it in my top 10. Alright, Matt, why

the Anticipation of a Kingsman? Just because

you want to see how Colin Firth comes back? You

know, there are a few questions I have about

that movie and that is all of them. I feel like

that first one was a guilty pleasure movie, which

I probably shouldn't have been. But it was just

it was off the rails in a modern sense. And,

you know, I'm hoping they can capture that magic

again, because that movie was real silly, but

a lot of fun. Yeah, I agree. It was number 26

on my list. I'm anticipating to see what they

do with this. I like the director. I like the

people involved. I like what they set up in that

first film. So let's see what they do with the

second one and how they answer some of those

questions. Our next one, just an average rank

of 16s, only one spot away, would be Lego Batman,

which was on all of our list except for Amanda's.

Lego Batman, highest ranking person in that would

be you at number seven. So we talked a little

bit about this in the box office, but why so

much anticipation for Lego Batman? because I

thought it was gonna do well. What I did when

I made this list was I copied over my prediction

list of anything I thought I wanted to see and

then I just filled in the blanks. So that's why

they're a little out of order. Lego Batman looks

fun. I've bought some of the movie specific Lego

minifigures. I got that killer whale, which is

awesome. So like, I'm sure... I would enjoy it

if I go see it. It's coming out before Valentine's

Day, I believe, so I might push for that to be

our Valentine's Day movie this year, because

why not? It looks entertaining, fingers crossed.

No, I didn't even make it in my top 50 of the

the last go -round I did have it pretty pretty

high up at first, but I just found a bunch more

stuff that that Looks cool, and I think this

is gonna be fun. I like the Lego movie And I

know it'll it'll be good, but it's something

that's not gonna be surprising. It's just good

We'll have to see how you feel after you watch

it, hopefully a little more high on it. How about

you shut up and let me like what I like, alright?

Alright, sounds good. Alright, for my next pick,

or not my next pick, but for our next pick, all

of us but Matt had this one. Very high on Dan

and I's list, just barely squeaked into Amanda's

list at number 30, and I'm not gonna say the

title of this film rights probably, but it's

called Okja. I have no idea if that's how you

pronounce it. It's OKJA and this is directed

by Bong Joon Ho who directed Snowpiercer and

What are you laughing at? Say that again? No!

But this also has Tilda Swinton in it, Jake Gyllenhaal,

Paul Dano, a young girl named Miha risks everything

to prevent a powerful multinational company from

kidnapping her best friend, the massive animal

named Okja, director Has called Okja a very shy

and introverted animal. It's a unique animal

that we've not seen before I don't know what

any of that means, but I like Snowpiercer. So

I'm anticipating Okja. I hope that's how you

say it. Dan, why is it so high on your list?

Yeah, I love Bong Ju Ho and Snowpiercer is a

great also love mother He did the host which

is another kind of creature film with this like

crazy animal that like it that appears in the

river. He's really great at like Handling multiple

tones where things can be somewhat humorous and

frightening at the same time or the morph over

time like mother's a great example of it where

it starts kind of comedic and Very rapidly deteriorates

and becomes very dark and dreary. So I just I

think he's really Diverse in his ability to make

great movies. So that's why I'm really looking

forward to it And they're really in I love till

this way and it's no piercer So if she can do

anything similar to that and this that'd be great

I also like the idea that it sounds in a similar

vein as Snowpiercer or something that has like

a fantastical element to it, but that also has

these interesting, maybe even provocative things

to say, social commentary or, you know, those

types of themes or messages. So I think it might

have some similar elements to that. So I'm very

much looking forward to this one, just like you

were. Man, I'm surprised that this one made your

list as well. Why the fuck are you surprised?

I guess I'm not surprised. Why the anticipation

for Oak Show? It just seemed like a really weird,

cool concept that I hadn't seen a bunch before.

And a couple of the people that are in it, definitely

Tila Swinton is a pull -bear, because I like

her in a lot of stuff. So I think it's just going

to be something unique and interesting. All right.

So definitely some love here for Okja. Made our

common list. And next up on that common list,

just... Just barely underneath that one would

be Dunkirk, which was on myself Dan and Matt's

list. Dan, I'll let you lead off on this because

you had it the highest. You had it up at number

three. So why the anticipation for Dunkirk outside

of or is it just because of Christopher Nolan?

I have a lot to do with Christopher Nolan. I

mean, I do enjoy his films a great deal and I'm

a huge fan of... war war war two films and this

is the story is interesting too it's one i'm

actually kind of surprised or hasn't been uh

movie really dictating it like this or covering

it before and tom hardy and killian murphy uh

so there's there's a lot to be excited about

And I also really like the trailer, just the

ominous tone of it really seeing something very

different. And we've had a lot of war movies,

you know, from Save Private Ryan to Hacksaw Ridge

last year, but it seems like it's going to be

a little bit different. So that has me excited,

but largely in part because of Christopher Nolan.

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Christopher Nolan, a

huge fan of Tom Hardy, and a huge fan of war

films, so it's in my top 10 as well. So definitely

looking forward to Dunkirk. Next up on our most

common list is a film we talked about a little

bit in our box office discussion, and that would

be Alien Covenant. Amanda, you had this highest

on your list at number five. So let's go with

you first. Why the love and why the anticipation?

Because I've heard people on both sides of the

fence on this one. I've heard a lot of people

saying that they think it's gonna be crap. I

don't know if that's just the crowd that didn't

like Prometheus or what, but why the anticipation?

I mean, if you don't like the Alien franchise,

I can see why you wouldn't like this. But if

you're like Kevin and I who watched the complete,

is it called an anthology? Like all of them?

From start to finish, it's really... a fun ride

and I was always super terrified of the character

when I was younger but fascinated as well and

I really like the look that it is kind of leaning

to now especially with Prometheus and all the

little things that tie in to you know the original

movies as well there's little pieces of all of

these movies connected to each other and it's

it's amazing and I think that the character itself

it speaks volumes that it's it's lasted this

long I mean when did this come out like late

70s early 80s started and it's now 2017 we're

still getting an alien movie and it's got some

really quality players in it and the effects

are just amazing working and I'm excited for

it and I think it's gonna be scary and thrilling

and awesome the Fassbender is back so we're gonna

see him Michael Fassbender back May 19th release

date for Alien Covenant So, Matt, interesting

that you did not have this one on your list.

So are you a little bit more hesitant about another

Alien film or not a big fan of the franchise?

They're more horror than anything, aren't they?

Like, I haven't seen them. There's definitely

a horror element. I don't like being scared.

Alien is more horror. Aliens is more of an action

film. And Alien 3 is more of everything different.

I don't know. But then the rest of it is garbage.

You should at least watch the first two. You

should watch the first two, man. Okay, maybe.

You'll never be able to convince Amy though,

so I don't know how that's ever gonna happen.

Alright, so Alien Covenant... anticipated film

from three of us. John Wick 2 would be the next

one on the list. Three of us had that listed,

except for Dan. Dan, you did not have that in

your top 30, but we'll start with Amanda, who

had it all the way up at number four. We just

rewatched John Wick, so did that make it rise

the ranks for you a little bit? I was just trying

to evaluate that myself, but just everything

that I loved about that movie... is the reason

why I'm excited for the second one. The action

sequences, the action set pieces are just amazing.

They're flawless and they wow you, really, which

is hard to do with action now. It's kind of like

once you've seen somebody get punched in the

face and shot a ton of times and, you know, stabbed

6 ,000 ways, it's kind of the same. But with

this, it feels fresh and... Keanu is is so good

at making us believe that he is Baba Yaga like

he is that badass and I just I loved all the

elements except for the dog killing which is

gonna be gone in this one because he has a new

doggy that looks like he will chew somebody's

freaking arm off so that's not gonna happen in

this one and Yeah, this dog never gets shot No!

It's not going to. It's bulletproof, alright?

Don't tell me that because I already saw it survive

an explosion in the trailers. So I know he's

gonna be good. There's no way that they would

kill a second dog. No frickin' way. But I think

the world that they did... was built in this

too it was super cool like i want to know why

they like they deal in these gold coins and like

how they established all these rules and i think

it was like just give me more image and that's

all that's all you want of that fucking movie

no i'm just saying i hope they give us more of

that element of it because that's the one i'm

most intrigued to learn more about okay alongside

john wick kicking ass Alright, then. Alright,

so John Witton was there on our list. Dan, just

too many films for John Wick 2 to quite crack

the top 30 or just hesitation that it maybe doesn't

end up. It is coming out in 2017, right? Yeah,

it's coming out in a few months, I believe. Trailer's

out. I like John Wick. I don't think I like it

as much as most people do. I do feel like I need

to re -watch it, but that's the only reason.

Yeah, like I'm gonna see it, but. Right. I don't

know. When it comes to action sequels, sometimes

you just end up getting kind of, like I'm thinking

of Taken 2. I love Taken, and Taken 2 just seemed

like you couldn't do it again. John looks a little

bit different, obviously, because they built

a really cool world in the first one. They also

killed off everybody in the first one except

for two people, so we're definitely going to

have to learn about some new characters. It should

be interesting to see if they can capture that

magic again that had a lot of people. loving

that film. We didn't talk a lot or we did talk

about quite a few comic book films already in

the unique side where we saw Justice League and

Logan and Wonder Woman. This is our first one

that we're going to have in common if you don't

count Lego Batman. And that would be Thor Ragnarok

coming in next. Matt and Amanda, you have this

in your top three. Matt, you had this highest

though at number two. So why so much anticipation

for Thor Ragnarok? Because it's not a DC movie.

I love comic books, and I love Norse mythology.

I've done a lot of research into actual Norse

mythology. And though they don't really follow

it in the Thor movies, why not enjoy it? It's

gonna be good, right? Here's the thing, all the

Marvel movies, the third one's been the best,

hasn't it? So this one should be the best Thor.

Amanda, agree? Chris Hemsworth, yeah. All right,

no, I think I think that the world here it got

a little shaky right in the second one Maybe

with what you actually, you know see in their

part of you know Their dimension or whatever

you want to call it like some of his little sidekick

characters are a little weak But I think that

this one has a little bit of a darker, more serious

tone. And I'm excited to see how it ties in,

you know, with what's been going on in our realm

or whatever. Well, it's going to be interesting.

Is it going to have a more serious, darker tone

or is it going to be a more comical tone with

Taika Waititi as the director? I mean, it's not

going to lose its comedy, but I think that it's

got a more serious, like, draw to it. OK. I'm

definitely anticipating to see what's in my top

30. been a bigger fan of the Thor films than

most people, I think, so I just like the sci

-fi elements. Most people like who, dude? Well,

most people would rank Thor near the bottom of

the marble. Yeah, but me and Matt are sitting

right here. Actually, I would say Thor is probably

the weakest of all of the threads. Except for

the Hulk. No, that Edward North movie was amazing.

But yeah, I think everybody has different opinions

on who they like best, whether it's Captain America,

Thor, Iron Man. I like the setting of Thor a

lot, so that kind of draws me to that one, even

if the stories might not have been as strong

as some of the ones in... Captain America, for

example, but next it might be some surprise here

in the next three picks that it's not on all

four of our lists So I'll just see how the panel

reacts to this one But on three of the four of

our list next up is war for the planet of the

apes Matt you had this at 23. I had this at 2

This is my second most anticipated film of the

year Dan This is your number one most anticipated

film of the year So I let you take the lead on

this one. Why so much anticipation for war for

the planet of the apes? So it can prepare us

for the upcoming future. I love the franchise.

I mean, I thought what was it? I always mess

up the rise was good. And then I thought Don

was amazing. Like, just to me, just up the game

when it came to what you can do with this franchise

as a whole. Love the characters it was creating

within the apes themselves, like Caesar and Kuba.

the villain of that film. I was just blown away

by it. I love Matt Reeves as a director. He's

done some really strong, he's done a lot of really

good things. I think he's still somewhat underrated.

So it and that special effects have been phenomenal.

And again, Woody Harrelson showing up So I just

I have so much faith in this franchise I love

the world that they've built the little sun starting

with the first one that how they're slowly connecting

it to the original without being forceful with

it so you can like it could exist in its own

vacuum or it could exist within the same universe

as the the original franchise to a certain extent.

So now after the first pen of the apes, they've

kind of heard it a great deal. But I don't know,

I've just been massively impressed with this

franchise and it's been getting better and better.

And I hope that continues. And the trailer was

great. I love how you kind of, it starts with

kind of the view of the apes in the human's eyes.

the threat and then it switches with the humans

and the apes being the threat. So I love how

it plays that game and how there's this like

ambiguity of who really the villain is to a certain

extent, but that's why I'm super excited for

it. and it never gets old seeing the apes on

horseback so uh i know a couple things about

this one that and first of all if you have not

seen rise or dawn please go watch them because

they're definitely worth it and then you will

be excited about this one and i would even suggest

going back and watching the original uh five

films because uh We did that, I did that just

recently within the last five years or whatever

where we went back and watched all of them. And

they're not all good. It's kind of hit or miss.

There's half of them that are good and half of

them that are bad. And the Mark Wahlberg one

is atrocious. But there's definitely a lot of

little pieces and elements that you'll pick up

on from those films that will make you appreciate

just this overall franchise even more. There's

so many little subtle hints and details. that

make this more than just a fun film, which it

is. You can just like it for just being a fun

adventure and a fun experience, but there's more

to it as well. So I'm huge on this one. I mean,

it's not quite in your top 30 though. No, it

was higher up early on, but like I said before,

I just found a bunch more films that were really

intriguing. Like this is something I definitely

know I'm gonna like. It's definitely gonna be

super well done. So I kind of went with things

that maybe were a little bit more surprising

to me or new to me. Alright, fair enough. Another

one that did not quite make all of our list!

Beauty and the Beast, only on three of the four

lists. I will let Amanda go first because this

is her number one most anticipated film of the

year. I feel like I've been waiting for this

movie forever. It's been talked about. It's been

advertised. It's in my Facebook feed every day.

The trailers look amazing. I think the characters

are looking super great. I'm in love with the

original. It was a super gorgeous film. The music

was amazing. The story was great. All the characters

were so amazing. that I want this movie to do

really well. And I think with what we've been

getting from these live -action Disney films,

it's definitely possible that we're going to

get an amazing film onto this. It looks like

it could be the best out of that group, and the

casting was also brilliant. It was number 11

on my list. Matt is number eight on your list.

Just a few comments about being the beast from

you. Nineties nostalgia is where it's at. This

is probably my favorite of the Disney. animated

movies from my childhood. And all of the three

that you've seen? Yeah, like I said, from my

childhood. Dan, not quite on your top 30, but

again, a lot of films to choose from. What pushes

them down a little bit for you? I've enjoyed

the Disney live action remakes. I really like

Jungle Book. You know, Cinderella was good, but

it just wasn't something that I'm really clamoring

for it again. It's in my top 101 I'm going to

see for sure, but... um not something i'm really

super anticipating beyond just the kind of just

the novelty of it but i'm sure it's going to

be good like i do think it has looked uh pretty

amazing i thought the marketing has been strong

and the cast is really good um but yeah besides

that i'm nothing really negative to say it's

just some of us i'm more enjoy i'm more anticipating

For sure all right last one that is only on three

of our list again might be some surprise from

the listeners here that it's not on all four

list But that would be Star Wars, and I can all

call it the last Jedi It's number one on my list

as far as most anticipated number four on Dan's

number ten on that so that means it didn't quite

make Amanda's list I don't think I need to speak

too much about this we talked about it in the

box office, and we're all Star Wars fans So it's

something that we're definitely looking forward

to Amanda. I'll let you go then as why, why not

quite in your top 30? I've already said it. There's

this, this is something that I'm kind of not

sick of seeing, but sick of talking about. Like

it's just something that I feel like we don't

need to say anymore. We know that freaking Star

Wars is coming out every year. Does it need to

be at the top of our list every single freaking

year? They're still good. I don't know. I just

wanted some variety. Variety. Get away from the

Star Wars. We won't talk anymore about Star Wars.

We'll do it. We'll do it a lot throughout the

year. That means there's only three films left

to talk about real quickly and those are the

three films that were on all four of our lists.

And obviously some people might be scratching

their heads because we listed a whole bunch of

big films that are not part of this. Number three

on that list, on all four of our lists, would

be The Dark Tower. So, The Dark Tower, 15 on

Amanda, 13 on mine, 29 on Dan's, and 11 on Matt's.

Matt, we talked about this a little bit last

week too, but why so much anticipation for The

Dark Tower? Oh, I'm pretty sure I mentioned it

last week, but The Gunslinger is in my top three

favorite books of all time. I grew up with my

parents reading Stephen King and being not a

horror fan. There's nothing for me to grasp there.

except for the Dark Tower series, and I'm all

about Roland and his content, and I cannot wait

for this movie. I just hope they don't try to

roll seven books into one movie, because fuck

that. Agreed, Amanda. Any thoughts on Dark Tower?

Oh, I just think it's going to be cool to get

into this world, and I love anything dark and

mysterious. And this is dark. in a tower, so

I'm down. Alright, so equal love on all of our

parts for Dark Tower. Another film that made

all four of our list that we talked about briefly

last week would be Blade Runner 2049. Nineteen

on Matt's list, eight on Amanda's list, seven

on Dan's list, and third on my list. We just

rewatched the original Blade Runner a week or

two ago, and that kind of got my anticipation

going. Plus, I love the cast that's involved

here, and I remember the name that I had forgotten.

we talked about last week. It's not just Ryan

Gosling and Harrison Ford, but Jared Leto is

in this film as well. So that's kind of a heavy

hitter. And I'm all about whatever happens with

Blade Runner 2049, whether it's fantastic or

whether it's average. I don't know. I don't think

it could be average. It's going to be above average.

So Blade Runner 2049, very high on my list. Dan,

any thoughts on the next Blade Runner film? Yeah,

Denny V showing up again. Like I mentioned, I

loved Arrival last year. I loved Sicario. Oh,

yeah, if he's making a movie, I'm going to be

there. And the trailer is pretty solid as well.

So, yeah, it's super excited for this. Amanda,

any thoughts on Blade Runner? Uh, Ryan Gosling,

right? All right. So, about it. All right, she's

about Ryan Gosling. All right, that means there's

only one other pick that we all had on our list

and this would be the highest one ranked out

of those. It was number 18 on Dan's list, number

nine on Matt's list, number five on my list,

and number two on Amanda's list. If you couldn't

tell that we had love for this film we did our

box office and we all had it as basically the

highest ranking comic book film. Well we have

it here too as our highest ranking most anticipated

film and that would be Guardians of the Galaxy.

Volume 2 takes the top spot over everything else.

So Amanda, you had this the highest. Why so much

anticipation for Guardians of the Galaxy? Baby

Groot. TV Groot. I know the first Guardians was

great. The soundtrack was awesome. The action

was there. The humor was on point. I think the

camaraderie that was built up and the individual

characters too was really great and I'm excited

to get back into it. Matt, final thought on Guardians

of the Galaxy? It's like Star Wars with superheroes.

It definitely is so I think we'll all be anticipating

that one and I just real quick as part of kind

of closing this and wrapping this up because

we've named a whole bunch of films that we've

anticipated Dan is also putting together, with

my help a little bit, a top 100 most anticipated

films that we'll be putting out on the website.

So if you're looking to see everything that's

coming out that may be of interest, you can scan

through that. That'll be up here hopefully in

the next week or so. And Dan, I just want to

get your thoughts overall on your anticipation

level for 2017. We talked about how we felt on

2016. We've talked about what movies might make

some money and some of the individual films we're

looking forward to. But how are you looking at

the year overall? Are you anticipating? 2017

Yeah, I think this has a Cute potential to make

up for last year a great deal and last year the

blockbuster is kind of stunk this year like Looking

at the ones that are set to come out. It could

hopefully rectify that It's interesting though

because I feel like we're not getting a lot of

movies from really hugely established directors

for them You know, we really didn't talk about,

you know, there's no Scorsese. He just made a

film. But a lot of like those directors that

are up and coming have the potential of being

great, but maybe aren't necessarily, you know,

the the most notable. Like, I feel like last

year we had a lot more. or the year before. But

that kind of makes me excited because you know,

you could have some really breakout stars this

year. So I feel like there's a huge variety of

movies, as every year does allow. But there's

a lot anticipating the fact that we're doing

that top 100. And I still had movies that didn't

make the cut. That tells me a lot. So, yeah.

Yeah, there's a lot to look forward to. I think

you nailed one thing on the head, which is the

blockbusters this year, I think, have way more

potential of actually being Received better than

they were last year. I mean, obviously we didn't

mention I'm happy that we didn't mention Transformers

or you know, obviously the Fast and the Furious

and there is some blockbusters But those are

still gonna do well, even if they flop critically

So I mean, I don't think there's gonna be those

big misses like we had in 2016 I think there's

gonna be more that the average is gonna be higher

They're gonna be batting for a higher average

of 2017 and that's not talking about like you

said all the up -and -coming directors that have

some of the smaller or Independent films or some

of those more unique storylines that are coming

out. So I think there's a lot to look forward

to in 2017. So my anticipation level is probably

higher than it was in 2016. Amanda, where do

you sit on the whole scheme of films that are

coming out this year? Are you looking forward

to going to the theater in 2017? Hells yes, and

I think I'm definitely gonna be crying a lot

less. I think there's a lot more sci -fi and,

you know, mystery and some horror stuff that

I'm really gonna get behind, and getting back

to the, you know, the genres that I really, really

like instead of, like, being a total crybaby

and, like, blubbering all over myself in every

single movie that I watched this year, and I

think that... I have high hopes for Justice League

and a few of the comic book movies that are coming

out too, whereas last year my anticipation was

there, but I was super skeptical and I was let

down at the end of the day. So I'm hoping that

that's not a factor this year. Ton of films that

have fantasy or science fiction elements this

year. Another ton of films that have some type

of thriller or suspense edge to them. So that's

kind of interesting. Not a lot of stuff that

came out this year. up so far on like biopics

or some of this other stuff that we've seen over

and over and over these last couple years. Even

coming of age, it seems like there's a less amount

in 2017. Not that that's good or bad. It just

seems like we're shifting to a couple different

genres that may be taking the center stage in

2017. We'll see how that plays out. Matt? It's

the the the slate of films that we've been talking

about for 2017 gonna get you to the theater a

few more times this year Is it gonna be enough

to to drag you along? I mean, hopefully like

I love going to the theater it just Between not

having a good schedule for meeting people as

well as just not being super excited I didn't

go list last year, but I mean There's at least

ten that I need to see. Like, I gotta see these

DC ones. They look way better than last year's.

I mean, those ones were bad. Alright, so we'll

have to wait and see how that all plays out.

With that, that kind of marks the end of our

special episode leading up into 2017. So that

means it's time to get back to the grind of finishing

a few of our spotlights and series that we started

last year. So coming up in the next few episodes,

you'll be hearing us getting back into the video

game series. We'll be getting back into the Miyazaki

Spotlight and we'll be getting back to reveal

the rest of our top 100 films of all time, which...

should be getting interesting as we get to the

other side in the top 50 that we've been waiting

to get to. So, until then, please go to the website
