Hey, this is Greg Berger and you are listening
to the Geekcast Radio Network. Hello and welcome
to another episode of... the cinema geeks. I
am one of your geeks, Optimus Solo. Joining me
today for a special back from the holiday hiatus
record is Hard Candy Mandy. Hello. We're back.
We're back. Dinosaur story. And movie revolt
Dan. Hello. Hi. Underrated movie. So obviously
we took a little hiatus as we... counted down
our top 100 animated characters over the holiday
season, but we're back with a set of records
that I always look forward to a ton as we kind
of reflect back on the year. That has been and
look ahead at the year that will be so this is
the first of that series I guess you could call
it. So we're going to be doing our 2016 movie
awards today We're going to follow that up next
time next episode by doing our top 10 films of
2016 and that's going to be kind of how we somewhat
close the book on 2016 even though there's a
little crossover I guess with our episode after
that where we look back at the box office of
2016 and then look ahead and make our overall
yearly box office predictions for 2017 that's
always a fun record see how incredibly off we
are or Nostradamus like we are and then I guess
the last in the series if you want to call it
is when we do our most anticipated films of 2017
so it's all about celebrating the year that has
been and then looking ahead to 2017 I always
find it enjoyable I don't know Amanda you've
had one go at it what do you think about this
set of episodes it's coming up I think it's always
fun, but super hard because I'm like, that was
this year? It seems so long ago. Like Deadpool,
that was this year? I feel like that was two
years ago now. I don't know. Maybe it's just
because we see so many movies, it's hard to lump
them all together. rationalize that this was
one year of your life spent in all these movies.
That being said, even though we have seen a whole
bunch of movies, the other hard part about closing
the year out is all the movies that you haven't
seen. And I know it's always a game of trying
to play catch -up for not just us, but all the
movie fans out there, especially those that are
podcasting and putting together year -end lists.
What has that journey been like? Danny, has you
been trying to catch up with 2016 these last
couple weeks? It's like taking, you know, it's
like putting yourself in a hole and trying to
dig yourself out of it and how that doesn't necessarily
work. because it's like, oh, I can watch this
movie now, or go see this movie, and then other
lists start to be released, and other movies
start coming out. It's impossible. I know for
me, I try to see what I can, or specifically
seek out ones I feel people aren't talking about
that are getting a little bit of praise, because
some big ones that I've missed are like Moonlight,
Arrival. Manchester by the Sea, La La Land, which
are like four of the most recognized and appreciated
films this year. So people might be like, why
aren't these on your list? It's because unfortunately
I have not seen them. But I think on the flip
side of that, it does allow me to maybe talk
about some other movies outside of those that
aren't necessarily getting that recognition.
So it's like, you know, what is that phrase?
Two in one hand, a dozen in the other, whatever.
So yeah, it's challenging because I was looking
at 2015 movies and realizing there's still a
lot I haven't caught up with in a year later.
So it's like, it's never -ending. It is hard.
It's like if you don't especially when you're
talking about going like back to the year before
like if you don't catch them in January or February
then it's all of a sudden you're in the swing
for the next year and it's like no looking back
unless you have some dead spots here and there.
I just wanted real quick to mention some of the
ones that we haven't seen as well. Although Amanda
has seen more films than I have because she has
all of the horror films that she can check off
her list that I have not seen. But we haven't
seen Birth of a Nation. We haven't seen The Accountant,
Neon Demon, Handmaiden, Moonlight. Edge of 17
Jackie, Certain Women, Nocturnal Animals, and
of course the ones that haven't been released
for most people yet, Silence, When a Monster
Calls, and The Founder. Obviously most of us
have not seen those films yet. We get to get
into the debate like we did last year with a
couple films on what year they qualify for because
I think like specifically The founder was released
in like what one theater in Los Angeles in December
so that it would be eligible for Oscars and and
that was it so So it's kind of it's kind of tricky
when they hold those wide releases Especially
to the first couple weeks of January, but we've
seen a good deal though So hopefully we can highlight
a few of those films in our movie awards this
year and if you guys haven't Heard one of these
episodes before basically what we do is we come
up with our own categories We try to be creative.
We try to be fun We try to include some of the
standards I guess along the way and we each just
had independently came up with our own categories
our own winners most of the time Or some of the
time it'll only be one film or one winner and
then sometimes we'll have know, some runners
-up or some honorable mentions or top threes
or things like that. So it should be fun. We
don't know what to expect from each other's lists.
The only thing that we've gone over prior to
the record is our individual categories, what
they are, just so we knew how much crossover
there would be. And there actually was only one
category that all three of us decided to include.
So we're going to start with that. It's also
a good way, as Dan said, off air to kind of start
with the negatives so we can get that out of
the way right from the beginning. So I think
we're going to start off by going over our biggest
letdowns or biggest disappointments when it came
to film in 2016 and I know that seems like we're
maybe picking at the low -hanging fruit here
because according to a lot of people 2016 was
full of disappointments but we'll highlight the
ones we were most disappointed in. Amanda, ladies
first, what was your letdown or your winner I
guess for this award? Can I do my top three?
Sure. Biggest letdowns. Let's do number three
first. That was Midnight Special. Seeing the
previews and seeing who was going to be a part
of that really had me stoked and I was... Bout
it, bout it, you guys. But when we saw it, it
was just not there. Not a good time for me. Number
two, Assassin's Creed, kind of a recent watch
for us. I was also stoked for this because of
the people who were gonna be in it, the subject
matter, but definitely skeptical because video
game series, it's not always a good thing to
bring video games to the big screen, and that
definitely followed Sook here. My number one
biggest disappointment, reading the books, trying
to get them all read so I could go watch this
movie and like super appreciate all the details
and like have a ton of fun and be a little weirded
out at the same time. I love the vibe and that
was Mrs. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
and that just it fell super flat and I was crazy
disappointed and I didn't even finish the last
book because I was just so mad. All right some
big disappointments there for you a couple of
those were on your most anticipated list I think
when we go back to look at that for 2016, so
that's obviously part of it You know when it
comes to an award like this I think it's easy
to to pick out bad movies necessarily But I don't
know if that would qualify for me as being disappointed
in them because I mean of course Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles 2 is a bad movie But I expected
it to be bad so that wouldn't a movie like that
or films like that wouldn't really qualify for
me on this list These are more so films that
I actually did get my hopes up for Or was anticipating
excited about etc. So for my I only have really
two I think that probably go to the top of that
list and for me number two would be Jason Bourne
I I like that series a lot. I was excited that
Matt Damon was coming back and Definitely had
my hopes up for that one and I'm not I don't
know how bad of a movie I would call it, but
it was nowhere near what I was hoping would we
would get out of that film. So Jason Bourne for
me is one of them. And then I'm going to agree
with Amanda. I was so convinced, so convinced
that Assassin's Creed was going to be the video
game film that bucked the trend and that showed
us that it could be done right. You have great
actors behind it. It's just the type of video
game that has such a rich story to pick from.
And they bungled that beyond belief. I mean,
that is I keep telling people to me that is equivalent
to Lara Croft Tomb Raider for me like it Yeah,
it's like where we're gonna we're gonna choose
to have some of the weapons and some of the objects
and some of the costuming from the video game
But outside of that, it's just another video
game film that doesn't do anything I mean and
it's sad because Assassin Creed has a lot to
pick from it I don't quite understand why they
chose to go there out. They did so Assassin's
Creed By far a big disappointment, Dan, where
the video game occurs, in my opinion, lives on,
I guess. Have you seen Warcraft? Yes. Also super
shitty. That's so shitty it's not even on the
radar because it's not like we were hoping for
it. It was just like, we know this is going to
be shit. I was just curious. I know there were
some people who did like that movie. Better or
worse, Assassin's Creed or Warcraft? Oh, man.
Overall, I would say Warcraft just because there
was way more cool shit going on. And you could
understand. You'd say Warcraft was better? Yeah,
because you could understand what the hell was
going on, too. And yeah, yeah. I mean, Assassin's
Creed, I don't know who was in charge in the,
like. the pitching area or, you know, coming
up with a storyline. But you ask anybody that
plays those video games and the coolest part
of Assassin's Creed is going back in time, is
going back into these different historical time
periods and exploring that with these assassins.
And the movie literally spends probably 80 %
of its time in present day. So it was just a
big misstep. So at least Warcraft, I didn't expect
anything. So I guess it was less of... Less hard
to take for me. What about you? What's your biggest
letdown of the year? So I have six unfortunately
some of them have been already brought up But
so I'll go through this quickly, but starting
at number six for me is actually an animated
film Directed DVD animated film, but still I
have a lot of faith in DC animated films Usually
I do enjoy them and when especially when they're
in adapting a specific property But this year
and they adapted one of the most iconic Batman
stories ever with Batman the Killing Joke But
it just ended up being a huge misfire, mostly
due to the prologue that they put in place. There's
this additional piece that got a lot of controversy.
And my biggest issue was that it wasn't very
good. And it just felt like an unnecessary movie
at the end of the day that didn't need to be
made. So that was, again, not bad, but it just
was a little bit of a letdown compared to what
I thought it could be. Dan, would you say then
that that was the wrong choice for me to be the
first DC directed DVD movie that I've ever seen?
Probably, definitely. I liked a few of the voice
performances, but I was asking Amanda all kinds
of questions because I was very confused as to
what was going on and some different things.
I was like, are all of them like this? Yeah,
I think a good one. I'm trying to think of what
would Batman year one, because it legitimately
is year one. Under the Red Hood is also. To me
so one of the best ones and there's also you
know dark knight returns But that that is best
served when you kind of have a better understanding
of batman as a whole, right? Yeah, number five
for me is I guess maybe it was my fault for thinking
it could possibly be good but it was it was so
Much worse than I could have ever imagined and
that was Independence Day resurgence This it
was you know, I don't go to the theater that
much anymore and this was one movie We actually
went to the theater to see with my wife and it
was it was just so so bad You know just the the
athlete actors and that were just you made you
realize how much you would miss Will Smith It
was it was It was so awful number four is completely
on the different spectrum and it's from a director
I really like in a movie that's actually getting
up a lot of praise And it's certain women by
Kelly what Reichhardt and she's I love Kelly
right character movies. I love me cut off I really
love night moves, but this just did not work
for me I'll say the final act of this kind of
split up into three separate stories And oddly
for the first time in my life, Kristen Stewart
nearly saved a movie for me. She was one of the
best parts of this movie, or her story at least.
Like that was actually quite good. But I just
was completely disengaged by this entire film.
I felt overly meandering and especially the second
act, the second story with Michelle Williams
to me just seemed aimless at times. So it was
a huge letdown overall. So I know that was getting
a lot of plays, but it just, it did not. work
for me and like I said I'm coming this is coming
from someone who's liked your other movies a
lot just didn't have it number three is a movie
that's all even talked about and that's midnight
special and again I love Jeff Nichols I love
mud I love take shelter there's other movies
that Jeff Nichols made this year that I was huge
fan of Midnight special it's a movie. I would
still qualify as a good movie overall It was
I was just left cold by it and it was not up
to what I hoped for I thought it could be you
know top ten contender top 25 and it's nowhere
near that It's just okay in my mind. There are
elements of it that are really good But as a
whole it just let me let me empty and I think
that's one that ends up on and I would probably
have put that one in the running too I think
that one's One that ends up on these lists, not
because it's necessarily a bad film, but just
because of the expectations that a lot of people
had, us included, going into that one. And it
just wasn't, it wasn't that it was bad, it just
wasn't... I don't know. It just wasn't special.
It wasn't special. It lacked that something something
special that yeah, I can totally agree with both
of you when when at the end like there's meant
to be this like overwhelming motion a moment
of motion emotion and like this triumphant moment
I was just it was just like I was I was left
whelmed, you know, it's just like Well, not even
under underwhelmed Right, but there's like I
said, there's a lot of there's a lot in that
movie to like there's a lot of scenes in that
that I didn't enjoy but It was not what I hoped.
Number two is a movie I recently caught up with,
and I think way back when we were doing one of
our preview episodes, I'm like, oh, this is gonna
be the first time we get a Best Picture Oscar
contender, and I was way off, and it's The Birth
of a Nation. Again, a movie that I just... It's...
Like I was watching it and like I'm like this
movie should be good It just wasn't like it just
it like there was nothing compelling about it
and I I can't try not to but it kept going back
to like 12 years of slave and how how just powerful
that movie was and the birth of a nation just
was There was just nothing to it. Unfortunately
some track director choices that were kind of
odd and it just Was oddly paced and it just seemed
like it didn't do enough to build that story
up to what it could have been So that what I
find interesting about that one is there was
so much praise early on But there was little
to no praise when it actually went to like a
wider audiences Yeah, so I don't understand where
I mean, I haven't seen the film yet, but I'm
curious to see where the all the praise came
from the beginning because it seems like most
people are saying that it's not Living up to
that see this is kind of why I try not to take
I have a reward when it comes to reviews coming
out of movies from festivals and not taking them
seriously for a variety of reasons, you know,
they're coming from Critics who've been watching
like eight movies a day trying to review and
I don't think it's the best setting and also
I think at times Especially with Sundance. There's
this kind of desire to be the first one to see
the next great movie And that tends to lead things
to get overblown at times. You know, sometimes
it's legitimate, like, you know, trying to think
of the movie with the drumming. Oh, Whiplash.
Whiplash, for example, came out of Sundance was
huge, successful, huge hit. And I love that movie.
This came out of Sundance with a lot of praise.
But I think it was unearned. I think it. There's
a lot of other factors. I think went into it
and you know, I think there's a good movie in
there Maybe if it had a stronger director it
could have been really good cuz in that story
itself is a very like amazing and compelling
story, but the movie itself wasn't and Last for
me was actually my most anticipated film of 2016
and again when that's already been mentioned.
It's Jason Bourne Not a bad movie. It was just
you know, it's okay, you know born all -time.
It was one of my all -time favorite action films
And Jason Bourne wasn't like in my top five action
films for this year I don't know. I don't know
what it was. It just it just didn't it seemed
like You know, it was that quarterback that stays
one year too long. He just doesn't have it like
they're trying to recreate something that Like
it was at a special time and a special place
and trying to go back and do it again and just
the magic isn't there. And I think that's what
happened to it. Like, you know, again, I don't
think it's an awful movie. It just considering
I love that franchise, it like, I honestly think,
you know, it's, it's, I can't say it's worse
than boring and legacy, but it's, it's not nearly
as better as I hoped it would be. So. Yeah, sorry
that was long -winded, but yeah, that's all my
disappointments. No, I like it I'm in agreement
with them with most of those that I've seen as
well And yeah, it's just some independence dates.
We avoided that one as far as the theater goes,
but we did watch it on Blu -ray when it came
out and I think that's another one where we Yeah,
and that's something I think that was another
one where we kind of got tricked into the thought
process You know that it was gonna be another
one of those remakes that just somehow catches
lightning in a bottle and is actually you know
blows people away and it obviously did not do
that. Amanda, where do you want to go next? What
kind of fun category do you have for us? Let's
take it into the positive a little bit. Okay.
I'm going to do my biggest surprises. I got three.
Okay. Number three is Bad Moms. This was like
a last minute True Romance wanted to be on their
show for it so I went to the theater at like
10 o 'clock at night by myself to watch this
fucking thing and I was like, I'm not a mom,
I don't know if I'm gonna get it, like, I like
Mila Kunis, and what's her name? For the record,
I had no excuse not to go to the theater with
her to see this. She literally got asked to guess
on True Bromance, and I'm like, okay, cool, like,
what show? And she's like, Bad Moms. I'm like,
what? I could not convince myself to go to see
that. I told him I wouldn't put him through it.
That's how little hope I had for this, and then
she comes home raving about it. Yeah, I was like
sitting in the back of the theater with my freaking
popcorn and my slushy and my notepad, dying,
fucking laughing. It was hilarious. I had a lot
of fun with it. On like a re -watch, some of
it was still pretty funny, but I think a few
things kind of lost the sparkle. But definitely
still a funny flick. Number two was Deepwater
Horizon. I did not think that I was really going
to like this. I thought it was going to be boring.
kind of tragic but it really like it put me through
something very emotional and like it not even
like a took me on a journey or anything but like
i felt like worn out when i got out of there
because i felt like i was like going through
this situation with them and like it it just
did a really awesome job of like putting you
in the shit that they were in and i felt Like
I've I felt like I climbed Everest with them
or something like it was crazy that you know
the emotional intensity that you went through
with this and My number one is hunt for the Wilder
people I had very little hope that I would like
this but it was just a fun quirky offbeat Thing
I had a lot of heart behind it and I had a lot
of fun with it It was it was kind of long at
some point, but I still Felt myself Compelled
to keep watching the story unfold like it was
it was just awesome and I'm surprised you weren't
more game for that after What we do the show
we did in the shadows. Yeah, I mean that's probably
why I liked it But it was it was definitely a
pleasant surprise for me. All right Excellent
choices there for surprising I'm gonna I'm gonna
skip past my surprising moments because I don't
want to Reveal my hand too much when it comes
to next week's episode. So I'm gonna pick something
completely different I'm gonna go with the best
villain best movie villain of the year. I think
it's a fun kind of category to think about especially
with the number of comic book films and they
oftentimes kind of get critiqued for not helens
so not just comic book films but to see what
else we had to offer throughout the year. the
two of the best villains that I saw this year
came out early on and I don't know if it's a
factor of just the actor that was portraying
these individuals and well with our movie awards
but I still am stuck on these two guys' performances
as being part of the reason why these movies
resonated so much for me so I'm gonna they're
not the winners but I'll give a Shout out to
John Goodman in 10 Cloverfield Lane. I think
his performance was amazing in that film and
Patrick Stewart in Green Room. I think both of
them made for some interesting casting as far
as a bad guy goes, and I think they really worked
well in those films. When it comes to comic book
films, I'd also like to give a quick shout out
to Mads Mikkelsen and Dr. Strange. Not saying
I'm in love with that film at all. I think there
are some issues there for sure But I did like
Mads Mikkelsen as a villain. I think he had a
cool look I think he did a good job with what
he had to work with So I enjoyed him in the realm
of comic book villains, but come on. Can I have
any other winner? We've been waiting a long time
to see some more Darth Vader in an actual big
screen in full form So I got to give Darth Vader
the villain of the year Also has one of the best
scenes of the year when it comes to action or
just plain old badassery So darth vader would
win for my villain of the year Dan Interesting.
Yeah, I was actually when you said that i'm thinking
back to other movies with villains, but there
weren't, oh, huge to choose from, but you did
have good choices there. So I'm also gonna go
in a different direction completely by talking
about documentaries, some of my favorite documentaries,
and I'll try to be quick with this. Just someone
to mention, again, I'll have six here, and starting
with six, I have Man vs. Snake. And when we talked
about our favorite films of all time, I talked
about how much I love King of Kongs. And this
is kind of like the poor man's version of that.
It's kind of a similar story. It actually has
a lot of the same people that were in King of
Kongs show up here. And it's basically about
this guy, this guy trying to reset or set again
the world record for Nibbler. And it's just,
you know, this... Dirty some schlubbing guy who
you know did it once when he was a teenager and
it hasn't really done much then so it's not as
good as King Kong's but it's it's a little bit
fascinating and it's if you enjoyed that I think
you would enjoy this it's a very similar set
set up to that film it's just this guy and his
love of it especially if you're a fan of like
arcade games of the 80s and it's currently streaming
on Netflix the next one is number five is wiener
the documentary about Anthony wiener the You
know, disgraced politician who seems to be disgraced
every other month again for some other reason.
And this documentary kind of covers his attempt
to get elected for New York mayor. And it's kind
of an insane documentary just by the access it
has. And at the front of it, like as a character
for a film, Wiener is pretty fascinating as a
person. pretty awful, but it makes for a very
hard to watch at times documentary, but one that's
really compelling, and if you're at all into
the political system, it's fun. Number four is,
again, kind of New York related, The Witness,
again, streaming on Netflix, about the story
that took place in the 1960s of a woman who was
apparently killed, and all these people witnessed
it happen, but no one said anything, and years,
decades later, Her now brother is trying to kind
of figure out what happened. And it's kind of
this fascinating story about how things are told
and how misconceptions are things. It's really
quite good. Number three is 13th. Again, currently
streaming on Netflix about a very important film.
Maybe not a greatly made movie, but about kind
of race relations in the United States throughout
the history of it. Very powerful documentary
number two to me is like a bucket full of tears.
It's a Gleeson about a former Saints player Gleeson
who is comes down with ALS and Right after he
gets ALS or diagnosed with ALS he has a son or
his wife becomes pregnant and it's kind of his
journey and as a father and the difficulties
of it and what's great about Gleason is how it's
yeah, it's very motivational but it also really
shows just how challenging and impossible that
situation was especially for like his wife who
was going through a lot. So it was very like
honest I was actually surprised and how you know
at times they don't look like the best people
and I think that's true. I think that's what
made it really feel like more than just kind
of a fluff piece. It was a really kind of hard
to watch, but in a good way documentary. My wife
was very angry that we watched it on New Year's
Day. She's like, I don't want to start my New
Year off crying every five minutes because there's
always a reason to kind of cry. But it's a very
good documentary. And number one, it could be
kind of a cheat because it's technically a TV
miniseries, but it's being released or being...
going to be in the running for Oscar for best
documentary. So if it's good enough for Oscars,
it's good enough for me. And it's OJ made in
America. And I didn't think why would we need
a seven hour thing on OJ, but it's so much more
than that and legitimately maybe one of the most
important films of the year. and just how it
kind of takes that case as a microcosm for pretty
much everything that happened before and is happening
today. And that's actually currently streaming
on Hulu. So I would highly recommend watching
that. And I watch all my movies now in pieces.
So for me, it was just a normal process. So those
were my documentary of the year. Thanks. Yeah,
a lot of those getting some love around the different
shows and stuff. Heard a bunch of those names
drops on it. I'm definitely intrigued to check
out the the OJ one I'm just trying to decide
when and how I had that time to Go for that.
So alright Amanda. That means we're gonna go
back to you. What fun category do you have for
us next? Might be one of the funnest categories
ever this is so WTF am I watching award like
it and I'm gonna give it to, there's a number
one and number two here. There's a runner -up.
Number one is gonna go to Swiss Army Man, because
there were so many moments that it was like what
the fuck, am I watching? It was amazing. I'm
not even watching it, I'm still saying. Wtf did
I watch I still have no idea what I saw but there
was so much that was super cool and Also disturbing
and gross and weird and cool at the same time
My rubber is gonna be sausage party not as positive
on that one. I think there's Oh, you know the
food or G scene in particular I I was just like
I can't unsee this and it's horrific and it's
not even It was just so over -the -top like it
wasn't even funny to me So it was a WTF am I
watching in a good way and then a WTF am I watching
in a bad way? Yes All right, I like it. We should
let you create all the categories that we try
to do then from the future. All right, so Dan,
just the documentaries. We had Amanda with her
WTF once. That means I have to come up with something
creative. I'm gonna go in a completely different
direction and I'm gonna put the light and shed
some love for voiceovers. So let's talk a little
bit about best voice performances. This could
be in an animated movie, although there was a
couple. epic voice performances and non -animated
movies as well that might be in the conversation.
For me, just kind of some honorable mentions,
I guess, that won't be my winner. I'd give Bill
Murray in Jungle Book, I think he made the perfect
Baloo, whether it was talking, singing, or whatever,
I just think that was perfect. I guess you could
mention Idris Elba in Jungle Book as well for
Shere Khan, but then you could also mention him
in Finding Dory and Zootopia, so a good year
for Idris Elba. I think Mark Rylance in BFG did
a pretty good job, even if I didn't. totally
loved the movie. I would have told you if you
would have asked me though early on which one
I was looking forward to the most. It was definitely
looking forward to James Earl Jones finally voicing
Darth Vader again. That was a lot of fun to see
him do that after so many years and that he kind
of came out of retirement so to speak to to do
that but If I had to award somebody for best
vocal performance of the year, it's actually
not gonna go to any of the vocal performances
from an animated film. Instead, I would give
it to Liam Neeson for A Monster Calls, because
I think Liam Neeson did amazing. It's fun to
watch him do things when it's more of a serious,
more of a dramatic take than just a, not that
he's not a good action star, et cetera, but.
He does a lot with his voice in this film. So
my best vocal performance of the year would be
Liam Neeson for A Monster Calls. You can tell
that it was Liam Neeson, but it still was enough
change to his voice that you could. It wasn't
like you're watching Taken, but as like with
a tree. Definitely morphed his voice into something
new that we haven't heard before even and reminded
the closest it came to me was reminded me of
his voice work for the Narnia series as Aslan
that was probably the closest that I've seen
him do to that voice So Dan, what do you have
up next next? I'm gonna have a category where
I call movies that are better than they should
be basically things that work even though for
certain factors They shouldn't um, so looking
and looking at some of them that that I have
nominated One being Sully, which was directed
by Clint Eastwood. I just wasn't sure how this
could be made into a movie. I mean, it was a
great, you know, true life story, but was there
much here? And I haven't been the hugest fan
of a lot of his recent stuff by Clint Eastwood.
I thought, you know, this was gonna be kind of
just run -of -the -mill, but it ended up being
pretty well directed and while not amazing, I
thought, you know, Tom Hanks did... performed
pretty well and I just thought that the the editing
of how they Performed the sequence and how they
went through it a few times was it's pretty good
and even the climax which was legitimately people
watching a flight simulator Somehow worked more
than it should Also bad moms I have on here.
I thought this was gonna be awful actually weirdly
I I did a survey thing in the mall one day because
I'm you know I'm that loser and I had to watch
some trailers and one was bad moms and I just
comment on how awful it looked but it ended up
being a lot funnier I think the they had basically
I think got helped out by the fact that has really
talented comedians and They took what was not
that great material and made it much better than
it was But I think oh and also Eddie the Eagle
Kind of a schmaltzy sports film about a downhill
skier, but it's just so charming that it works
It's so well aware of what it is. It doesn't
hide it But I think of all the film was the movie
that worked that much was much better than it
should be with the finest hours It was a Disney
film based on a true story coming out in January.
It had everything going against it, but It's
really well directed. The action sequences of
them going through the storm are done well. I
would think it's, looking at something like Perfect
Storm, it's actually much better than that. Casey
Affleck is great. Chris Pine is... does a great
job, too, of this being the sheepest hero, and
it has a little bit of a cheesy moments here
and there. It does get Disney -fied, but overall,
it just reminds me of a really good family film
designed for adults, the type of movie that you
would get in the 60s or so, but you don't really
get now. So that was, of all the movies, much
better than it should have been, and it's now
streaming on Netflix, so I would definitely recommend
it. It's a easy watch that I think you'll enjoy.
Yeah, I think we're in agreement with a lot of
those films Amanda a big fan of bad moms and
We were both big fans of Eddie the Eagle. So
it definitely something that we weren't expecting
to be as good as it turned out Amanda you hit
us with some WTF moments last time. What are
you hitting with us this time? I'm gonna take
it real sad. All right, so prepare yourself My
top -tier jerker films of the year I've got four
of them. Nope, I've got five of them. Scratch
that, five. I'll start building the more films
you see. I know. I'll start from the bottom.
Number five is Me Before You. I think that I
didn't really expect much of this going into
it. Not a big romance movie kind of girl, but
I think that the hard choices that were made
in this and how their lives were changed, how
they came together. It wasn't too cheesy and
I think that it really worked for me and definitely
had a cry a little bit in this and was not the
ending that I thought it was gonna be by any
means. Number four, I've got Pete's Dragon. I
bawled my freaking eyes out this entire movie.
Oh my gosh. I felt so bad for Elliot and I felt
super bad for Pete and I think that I don't think
that I even knew what to expect going into this.
I didn't expect it to be as heartbreaking as
it was and I kept like... picturing my pets as
Elliot and like his expression and everything
works so well. I mean he doesn't talk but you
feel so much of what he's feeling and Pete you
just the struggle that this kid goes through
is unbelievable and I was not expecting to to
be a snotty mess this entire thing but I was.
Most the other ones you went in knowing you're
gonna be a snotty mess that one you were not
prepared. Yes super unexpected. I did not prepare
myself enough for that, but number three, I've
got allied. I didn't expect to cry as much in
this one as I did. I thought it was gonna be
more of like a thriller kind of thing, but the
love that they have and the love that they build
and the family that they have. and the decisions
that they're forced to make and the suspense
throughout not knowing, you know, nothing was
really black and white in this. There wasn't
like a clear -cut good guy and a bad guy, even
though you kind of knew, you know, where people
stood. For the most part, there were some twists
and things that you didn't really see coming.
And the decisions that they had to make were
really heartbreaking. And the fact that if it
hadn't been wartime, all of this would have been
different for them is really, it really tugs
on your heart. And I knew that there was gonna
be some level of tragedy in it, but nothing like
what we got there. So I felt for them and their
story. Number two, I've got the light between
oceans. This is another movie where You know
the decisions that these characters make weigh
heavily on their lives and it really weighs heavy
on your emotion because you're going through
all this stuff with them it feels like and The
choices that you have to make for family for
what you love to keep what's important to you
and to protect things That you you might need
to do some bad stuff to protect is they're all
super hard decisions Just like allied and I felt
for everybody, you know, there's there's so many
so many aspects character wise for for you to
be pulled in all these directions and feel what
they're you know, these people are feeling and
and try to Decide if you would make that same
kind of decision -making it's like nearly impossible
To figure out where you stand in some of these
situations. So that was another one. They just
Oh my god, I knew that was gonna be sad, but
I - I - I bawled. But, uh, number one definitely
was not prepared for the level of tragedy that
was in this movie. I - I really would think I
was gonna like it going into it, um, to be honest,
from just seeing the trailers. There was nothing
super standout -ish to me, but I was down to
go see it, and, uh, you know, my - my preconceived
notions were - were pretty quickly blown out
of the water, because... you see Casey Affleck's
transformation in this based on things that happened
to him in his life and you see him one way in
the beginning and I was totally confused because
you kind of learn about his story and flashback
things you know flashback scenes and I was like
you know I didn't understand at first why you're
seeing him in such a different you know, personality
and he was just a completely different person
in the beginning. And then as you learn more
and more, it all really makes sense. And I, oh
my God, I couldn't even imagine. I think the
last time we were talking about this, I was like
bawling just talking about it. So I'm gonna have
to keep my composure this time, but it's hard
to think about it. It's one of those movies that
have stayed with me. Since and it's been weeks
since we've seen this movie and I'll still catch
myself thinking about it and I'll I'll will start
crying I'll be like sitting in my car by myself
thinking about this movie and I'll start crying
like it's something that really sticks with you
and it's The level of tragedy like I said was
completely unexpected and it It broke me down
in a lot of pieces and I'm still trying to pick
them back up after after seeing that Definitely
a lot of emotional films this year, especially
the latter half Of the year. I think we've seen
three theaters visits in a row where there's
been tissues needed So and the last one I made
a mistake of we didn't have like popcorn or anything.
And so there was no napkins So I was just like
like my sleeve was just what I had to use It
was nasty, but I I had to pick two All right,
dan, what category do you have next for your
movie awards? I'm just gonna go with a one -off
here and uh, i'm calling it the movie the the
The movie I'd love to see a TV show of and mostly
because I feel like it has one of the best dads
I've seen in movies in a long time and that's
Morris from America and in large part due to
the performance of Craig Robinson I'm a huge
Craig Robinson fans and you know, I loved him
in the office I enjoy some of like he's kind
of had a little bit stand up here and there and
I love when he showed up in films But I think
this is by far like shows his range Uh, a great
deal because he has some more, you know, he has
his comedic moments, but I think some more dramatic
moments as well. But I just love his relationship
with his son in this. And, uh, one of the key
scenes is when he's like going over her son's
rap and you know, it's, it's has, it's filthy.
It has language and everything like that. And
you can care less about that. He's more upset
by the fact that it's not true and it's not based
upon his real life. And he's trying to give all
these lessons through that. And, uh, so like
he like he he uh rides the line of being kind
of a like You know, he doesn't, you know, he's
not necessarily like a screw up dad, which we
see a lot. Like, I think he could have easily
been that, but I think he's more so, he is trusting
of his son and he has some really strong language
too. And I just love their dynamic. I would love
to see a TV, like just see more of that, because
I think there's a lot of potential there. And
it does kind of have a sitcom set up of the fish
out of water situation scenario. Not that it
feels like a TV show, it's still cinematic and
it's a good movie. but I really enjoyed what
it had and I would love to see more of it. Yeah,
I think you're right too. It presents a dad that's
not necessarily, like you said, just a screw
up dad. He's not necessarily a dumb dad like
we get in some. It's just maybe a little bit
absent in some situations, but it's not playing
to one of the typical tropes. So I think that
would be fun as well. I agree with that one.
He's flawed without being awful. Right. Right.
For my next one, just because I guess you made
me think of it while you're talking, I'm going
to throw one in that I didn't have planned. I'll
do the best child performances that I saw this
year, because I think there was quite a few good
performances from children. Haven't seen all
the movies, obviously, but from the ones that
I saw, I would give the following nominations.
I would give Oakes Fegley from Pete's Dragon.
I thought he did a real good job selling what
that character was supposed to be, you know,
not knowing much about society, etc. Even though
I was disappointed with the film overall, I think
you got to throw Jaden Lieber, her, I'm probably
saying his name wrong, the kid from Midnight
Special. Even though he's been eligible for that
category before, I think he was the same kid
that was in Saint Vincent. I think you got to
give a little bit of credit to, I'm going to
say all these names terribly. Ali Cravalho, the
voice artist for Moana in a debut role. I think
that was pretty good work. Julian Dennison from
Hunt for the Wilder people, I think was pretty
fantastic. Then like, Dan, you were talking about
Morris from America. I think Markey's Christmas
from Morris from America did a great work there.
But I'll be a broken record. My winner would
go to Louis McDougal for Monster Calls. I just
think he has a wide range of emotions that he
has to kind of go through and display in that
film. And he doesn't come across Prost as Lacking
any authenticity. So those would be my best children
performances from the year Amanda. What do you
have next? The topic of performances, I'll kill
two Birds with one stone here I'm gonna go best
male performance and that's going to Casey Affleck
from Manchester by the sea for previously Mentioned
reasons, but I just think he did such an amazing
job at at In just portraying this broken man
and showing us these emotions in only the way
that his character really knew how. It was such
an emotional performance and it totally blew
me away. And I definitely see him at a completely
different light as an actor now. My best female
performance is gonna go to Emily Blunt for Girl
on the Train. I think that was also another one
that she did an amazing job taking us on this.
you know, emotional ride with her and through
all of her confusion and her struggles and I
totally invested in the character as well. Alright,
good stuff on the performance level there, continuing
that string. Dan, what do you have next for your
next movie award? Well, I'll kind of tie on to
performances, but more so, not necessarily performances,
but ties into that and my award for best ensemble
cast for best use of character, characters, and
that goes to Don't Think Twice, a Michael Bigliaz
movie from this past year. I just don't think
there's a movie that had more complete, there's,
you know, eight, seven, eight characters in this,
all of which feel rather, you know, complete,
and all have their moments, all have... progression
throughout the film some more than others but
For this being Michael Buiglia's second film,
I was impressed just by how much he stepped up
his game as the director, being able to handle
all this. And it's hard to even say who is the
lead actor or actress. It's just really well
balanced. And I think that's a really hard thing
to kind of nail down when you have this many
moving pieces. So I think it's overall, I thought
Don't Think Twice was going to be this kind of
screwball comedy type of thing, but it was much
more than that. And I think it's one of 2016's
most endearing films. Nice. I like that we haven't
seen that one yet. We gotta add that to the list
of stuff to see, because I've heard that come
up quite a few times in some of these year -end
shows, especially when it came to ensembles and
dialogue, writing, that type of stuff. Definitely
a good choice there for my next pick. I'm gonna
go to something a little bit fun here another
preview of Some of the movie blogs that will
be out on the site something that you'll see
there with our series of kind of 2016 wrap -up
one of my blogs on the site will be kind of miscellaneous
movie awards and this is the type of stuff I'm
talking about here with best couple or relationship
between characters a lot of times you can see
some romantic couples being put on here this
year I seem to side more with just Relationships
between the two on more of a friendship level,
I think was kind of the theme here and some dynamics
between them. So I have, I guess we've been mentioning
this movie a lot, but Pete and Elliot from Pete's
Dragon. I think that's an endearing relationship
that is why that movie worked and why it was
making people like Amanda sob a little bit. Not
getting much love, I guess, outside of a few
people I've heard here and there, but Pete's
Dragon definitely a movie that ended up being
better than I thought it was gonna be. How about,
I'm gonna say these names wrong as well, even
though I'm a huge Star Wars fan, but Chirid Emwe
and Baez Malbus from Rogue One, Star Wars story.
I thought they were an interesting dynamic there
at how much they had each other's back. And I
think it kind of has some emotional resonance
too, towards the end of the film. Uncle Heck
and Ricky from Hunt for the Wilder people. I
thought that was a fun relationship between an
older mentor type. I guess grumpy old man and
the young kid. Good night, Robichaud and Billy
Rocks from Magnificent Seven, I guess in the
same way that the Star Wars pair there, two guys
that kind of really had some history together,
had each other's back, and it made for some fun
moments in that film too, and a little bit more
emotional resonance here too. From Sully, Chesley
Sullenberger and Jeff Skiles, the pilot and the
co -pilot. I thought that was a fun dynamic between
the two. Again, I guess a lot of these about
having each other's back was, oh. kind of prevailing
theme across movies in 2016, because it's going
to fit with this next group as well. I think
this group makes it on here for some of the comedic
moments as well. But I'm going to give Marcus
Hamilton and Alberto Parker from Heller Highwater,
the two police officers, Jeff Bridges. And I
can't remember who's playing Alberto Parker,
the name of him off the top of my head. But I
thought they had a fun relationship that was
both comedic and dramatic at the same time. But
my winner would be Jackson Healy and Holland
March. from nice guys, Ryan Gosling and Russell
Crowe, because even for people that didn't like
that film, I don't think you could deny the dynamic
that those two individuals had. And it was fun
to see them carry that dynamic on in all of their
publicity appearances, late night appearances
as well, because they definitely stayed in character
for a lot of that. So I thought that was a fun
relationship as well. Amanda, what's your next
category? I'm gonna dedicate this one to Barry,
for the sheer romance. That's my biggest LOL
moment of the year. That means literally laughing
out loud, you guys. That's what that means? No,
I'm talking about just not like a text LOL, like
I was... Yeah, I was and let me tell you guys
when she starts laughing in public watch out
it can cause a scene it's awful And it just I
can't control it but said the opening scene of
the boss Melissa McCarthy flying in a frickin
gilded Phoenix with flames T -Pain singing, backup
dancers. I lost my ever -loving mind in that
theater. Normally I try not to laugh in the theater
because it's so freaking awful, but I could not
help it. I was sitting in the back row, just
losing my shit back there. I just, I couldn't
help it. It was like right out of the gate. Wasn't
expecting something like that. She's dancing
around the stage and I was just loving every
minute of it. We're at this theater scene of
Melissa McCarthy film and Amanda's laughing before
the movie even starts. Oh man. I wasn't laughing
before it started, but as it started, I definitely
got into it. Before the title came up, you were
already laughing. No, I wasn't. All right, was
that the only one? My biggest LOL moment. Okay,
biggest LOL moment. All right, Dan, what do you
got? Well, you know, we're in a world where movies
are released in a lot of different ways, not
just in theaters, so I wanted to kind of... put
an award for best release on VOD or Netflix or
what have you, a movie that was not kind of released
wide first. And I'm gonna go with The Little
Prince, the animated film that came out on Netflix.
I waited way too long to watch this and I finally
sat down and saw it and I was just, I was majorly
impressed by first the animation. I think the
poster, because I didn't watch the trailer, the
poster had me thinking it was all stop motion
animation. Not that I disliked that, but there's
a great blending of different styles with this.
The imagination is amazing. I thought this was
like a Roald Dahl book. It is based on a book,
but it felt like the best Roald Dahl movie adaptation
ever made, though it's from another author. And
the voice work is really stellar as well, so
I think it's really being underappreciated, similar
to Beast of No Nation. Probably won't be nominated
for Best Animated Oscar because of that, which
I think is a shame because I felt like, in a
year of really strong animated films, it was
one of the best. I think Amanda and I both had
this as our number two animated film on the year
and I wish it would have got a bigger release
or some more fanfare because I was just thinking
the same thing as you were talking and then you
said the words, I think this is criminally underappreciated.
I think the Little Prince was an excellent watch
and if you have not seen that yet and you're
a movie fan or an animation fan, you need to
go check it out because I think it would quickly...
fly to the tops of your rankings along with the
likes of maybe one or two other films that came
out that you probably already know about because
they have big releases but I like that one a
lot. Little Prince deserves more attention. Let
me go with something that's fairly obvious but
let's just highlight the I know we did a lot
of negative and disappointing films at the beginning,
but I think one reason why 2016 is getting such
a bad rap is because of the blockbusters. And
I think a lot of the blockbusters these days
tend to be sequels. So let me just real quick
give out the worst sequel award. All right. And
there's a few nominees that could be in the running
for this, depending on how you would line it
up. So worst sequel. All right, we're not talking
about just remakes reboots. It had to be a sequel.
So we're going to go with Inferno. As far as
the Da Vinci Code series, we got Blair Witch,
the sequel to the original Blair Witch. I thought
that film was bad overall. The others are Blair
Witch 2, too, right? Yeah, but this is... Also
a sequel. It's a sequel to those, because it's
carrying on from those characters. Jason Bourne,
which we already talked about. How about Huntsman,
The Winter's War? Not a good sequel there. Alice
Through the Looking Glass? Pretty terrible. I'm
sorry, Amanda. Batman versus Superman. I don't
like it either. Justice. Shut up. Not a, what,
Batman versus Superman? Alice I know I was moving
on to Batman versus Superman before I can even
comment You can't bring me into something and
then move on before I can say something. I don't
want to upset you Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
out of the shadows Terrible you do a bad movie
and had even a worst sequel to me Allegiant the
divergent series of agent film that series can
just stop before it finishes, but I think the
worst sequel Easily, I know we all brought it
up in disappointing films probably but the worst
sequel of the year for me is Independence Day
Resurgence That did not deserve to be as bad
as it was. So Amanda. What do you got next? I'm
gonna do best horror films of the year top three
here Number three. I'm gonna go with the Blair
Witch did not think this was gonna be good But
I was freaking scared and I'm really glad that
they showed some more of what you actually see
the freaking witch this time and you you get
to Learn a little bit more about what happens
in the woods, you know when you're there and
I think it just ties in a lot and it adds a lot
to What the first one was did you even see the
first one Kevin? No, I didn't know you're even
like a horse or whatever I don't care. Okay.
I don't care. I was scared I screamed I jumped
it was legit Number two, I've got The Boy. I
did not expect much from this, but the twist
in this got me. Like, normally in horror movies,
it's really easy to see the twist. You can see
it coming a mile away. But this one, you go through
the whole movie thinking, thinking the creepy
stuff is just that, it's... That kind of creepy
stuff, but then the twist happens and then you
find out that that creepy stuff Isn't exactly
the creepy you thought it was it's a different
kind of creepy and it creeps you out even more
Creeping going on. Yeah creep creep give my TLC
on but it definitely Definitely did the job there
and number one. I've got ten clover field lane
the suspense the craziness that happens, the
anticipation of something awful happening, about
to happen. You know it's gonna happen. And it's
that dread feeling that sticks with you the whole
movie, I think, did an awesome job. Alright,
so horror takes there. You were one of the few
that did not like The Witch. I did not see it,
but a lot of people... have the witch very high.
The cool shit didn't even happen until the end
and as soon as the stuff started happening then
it just cut off and if it would have just kept
going a little bit more and showed me some of
the actual cool stuff I would have been on board
but I don't know. I'll have to see that eventually
to see what the hubbub is about it because a
lot of people praising it. But interesting picks
there from the horror films. Alright Dan, what
else do you got on your list? What else we got
I'm gonna go with Not necessarily best script
because I feel like if I say best script I'm
be lying because I'm not actually reading the
script, but I am hearing dialogue So I'm gonna
go with my movie with them that I thought had
some of the best dialogue and I love great dialogue
like Big reason I love Aaron Sorkin because he
has such amazing back and forth and I think the
closest thing that came to that this year was
a movie Indian nation which stars Logan Lerman
as during the Vietnam or sorry Korean War and
he goes off to college basically and he's this
atheist living in a Very Christian world and
he's a Jewish atheist Jewish atheist Jewish atheist
and the big reason why for the dialogue is that
he has these meetings with the Dean of the college
and they have these kind of long diatribes basically
go back and forth about different issues and
I just loved it and it was the movie itself has
maybe some problems but those moments we really
worked for me in large part because of the writing
and because of Logan Lerman who I think is really
growing into a great actor he's been in a lot
of really good things and this was Maybe his
best performance. So because of that I had I
gave it my best dialogue award That would not
be Alright another blog that we'll be putting
out on the website is best of movie moments So
to give you an example of what kind of stuff
we're talking about there One thing I have from
that blog that I'll reveal here is our most ridiculous
movie moment So there is a few of these so I
will I will Let you guys know that there's more
than a couple here. We're gonna take some time
and go through the ridiculousness of 2016 the
first one that I have is the complete ending
slash CGI climax to suicide squad with the enchantress
and her brother I just thought that that was
laughable and Did not those two characters did
a lot to hurt that film overall I think the film
could have been better overall if they would
have found something different to do with those
two characters Even though I love 10 Cloverfield
Lane I think the Molotov cocktail that she concocts
at the end to combat what's going on is borderline
ridiculous as far as her ability to pull that
move off. Again, another film that I like, Magnificent
Seven, and I'm not saying it's ridiculous in
a bad way, but I would still title it ridiculous,
and that is the entrance for Vincent D 'Onofrio's
character. I lost my mind when he came on screen.
I was not prepared for his voice or his actions,
and I think it... Worked for me, but it still
would be deemed ridiculous Hacksaw Ridge movie
that was good, but definitely had some problems
and one of the main problems is when the lead
character there pulls off the combination of
not only using another body as a human shield
as he Makes his way through the battlefield,
but then he does like a roundhouse kick, and
then he slaps a grenade out of midair with his
hand and diverse it into another direction. And
that was laughable as well. Amanda, you mentioned
Swiss Army Man being a WTF movie. WTF moment
from that movie was when the Swiss Army Man becomes
a human compass. And one body part is directing
them into where they need to go. So I thought
that was something I was not prepared for during
that movie. How could you be prepared for that?
You can't. How about Don't Breathe? Let's just
say the title and let's say Turkey Baster and
let's move on because that's something you can't
unsee. We also had the food orgy. Sausage pie
was not necessary at all. I did not like that
movie and I did not need to see the food orgy.
Brothers Grimsby will say the term elephant vagina
and how ridiculous it was to see how that was
incorporated into that film. But the winner?
There can be no other. The most ridiculous film
moment of 2016, we'll just call it the Martha
moment from Batman versus Superman. So those
were my most ridiculous movie moments from 2016.
Amanda, what do you have next? Well, since you've
knocked off my next awesome category, most cringe
-worthy. What did you have for most cringe -worthy?
The scene from Don't Breathe. It is a bad one.
Did you have anything else? No, that is one award.
It is cringe -worthy, that is for sure. I guess
I'll go with my favorite character of the year,
and that's Holton, as played by Kate McKinnon
from Ghostbusters. She is my spirit animal, pretty
sure. I want to be best friends with her. I want
to go invent some stuff and eat some Pringles
and blow crap up in an alley. Like, I just feel
like we need to be bus buds forever. Highlight
of that film for sure. Yeah. Dan do you have
any movie awards that you have not given out
yet? Yeah, I have basically what I would call
hidden gems of 2016 movies that I feel like Are
not getting a lot of attention or definitely
not getting awards attention One the first is
one that was also I think it had some festival
releases But did not actually get a wide release
was released to Netflix and I think is on their
Netflix original Property banner. It's the fundamentals
of caring and starring Paul Rudd and it's it's
cliche It's basically he plays this in -home
nurse for a person with disabilities and that
has a lot of the things you expect But also as
part of Paul Rudd, it's very endearing I do love
their relationship and you talked about really
great backs and floors and that they had one
of my favorites for from last year band of robbers,
which is Like a modernized version of Huck Finn
and Tom Sawyer where you have individuals basically
trying to rob a bank. It's enjoyable. It's not
all that amazing, but it has some really good
moments. Kill your friends, mainly due to the
performance of... Sorry, I forgot his name Nicholas
hold cheese. Yeah, Nicholas hold who's been killing
it lately. He's doing yellow He's had some of
the best my which is some of the big films like
Mad Max last year and I thought he was great
and kill your friends it's kind of like a music
version of Leaning on out of Caprio and Wolf
of Wall Street And another movie called Dark
Horse, The Dark Horse, which I guess technically
was released in New Zealand into 2014 and 2015,
but didn't really come around here to 2016. Again,
has some cliche moments. It's about a guy played
by Cliff Curtis, who's bipolar, but also a chess
genius who teams up with this chess team that
is working in the inner city to kind of get them.
into competitions and things like that, but I
just thought the performance of Cliff Curtis
was phenomenal and a big part of that movie and
I watched it I think at a good time where I just
needed something to feel good, but I also have
two other films that would rank into this and
those are gonna be in my top 10 so if you want
to see what those two are you can listen next
week when we give our actual top 10 list. I like
it, the plug for next week's episode. Amanda,
let's go right back to you, though, because I
know you had a few more categories on your list,
and I'm almost tapped out with the movie awards
I want to reveal at this point. So what else
do you have? I'd probably wrap it up with the
most upset I didn't catch. OK, biggest regrets.
Don't judge me. Jack Reacher never go back. I
still think with a pretty dope and a lot of action
that I want to see I don't know if you want to
watch that though from what I've heard I don't
I don't agree with that because I'm gonna see
it and I'm gonna love it and you guys can shove
it and then my next Selection for the most upset
I didn't catch and that's Ouija origin The first
one was super creepy and Kind of a crap movie,
but it was it was okay. Okay. I mean if we're
talking about war And you can't be too picky,
all right? And Ouija Origin of Evil, I think
will look even scarier. Nice, nice. Another blog
that is already out on the website is the...
of genre awards that we do every year. And what
we do there is we grab different genres and give
an award to each film that we think was the best
representation of that genre. So if that sounds
like something interesting, please go to the
website and you can see all the different ones
there. I'll give you one example out of those.
For example, one of the categories is the best
biopic that we've done a couple different times.
And this year I gave that to Sully, the movie
about Chesley Sullenberger. And I think that
was the best example. out of biopics. A lot of
times biopics fall into some certain traps and
have some common missteps. But I think that one
was one of the best ones we got this year. So
if you want to see the other genres included
and what films were awarded for things like Best
Western, Best Science Fiction, Best Fantasy,
then definitely go to the website and check out
which movies as well as the honorable mentions.
And it also gives the history of other films
in previous years that have won those awards.
Dan, anything left that you'd like to highlight
or give out for this year? I'll just say my favorite
soundtrack of the year, which is a movie. I think
it's getting a lot of talk throughout but from
a lot of lifts Deservingly, so one movie I really
felt bad and that didn't make my top ten But
I do love its music and even though I'm not a
big fan of that type of music in Sing Street
it's just such a feel -good movie and a lot of
that is due to the music and it's just great
you drive it like you stole it and The other
songs that like again, I don't like that type
of music typically, but it works really well
in the movie. So It's catchy yeah, a lot of fun
musical moments throughout 2016 whether it was
a musical or even some of the big blockbuster
type films whether you talk about the trailer
for Suicide Squad or Star Trek Beyond or in some
of the animated movies there's a lot of good
music moments in 2016 that you could highlight
but a lot of people point to Sing Street as one
of the brightest of those highlights so that
will probably do it for our movie awards for
2016 a lot of fun stuff there like I said if
those are things that interest you we'll have
a series of blogs that will kind of go along
with that with our genre awards our movie moments
and our miscellaneous movie awards but the big
deal is what's coming next week when we reveal
our top 10 films of 2016 so we've been watching
films all year long to finally get to our top
10 and that will be revealed we'll see how much
crossover it is and which film reigns supreme
at the top of our list for Amanda, Dan, and myself.
Until then, please go to the website geekcastradio
