California Dreams

It's time for the telecast brought to you by

welcome to the 25th episode of the telecast brought

to you by the geek cast radio network today we

continue and actually end our kids sitcom block

with the last of what had been the saved by the

bell entries, but we've snuck one other one in

here. And with me to help close out before we

give it away here is JT from Saskatoon. Hello

sir. Good day to you. And today the two of us

will be talking about... Remember We've talked

about all four of the Saved by the Bells and

now we're switching gears to California Dreams.

Before we get too far into our discussion, quick

background information on the show. It debuted

on NBC in 1992, a year before Saved by the Bell,

the new class. It went until 1996, so it was

a total of five seasons and 78 episodes. And

for those of you that don't know or don't quite

remember what California Dreams is, just basically

think Saved by the Bell, but instead of the kids...

being in a school and just doing regular school

stuff there in a school, but they're also part

of a band. So it's like the musical version of

Saved by the Bell. So JT, what do you remember

about California Dreams? Well, two things spring

to mind immediately. One is third best theme

song ever after Saved or Bell Classic and Bell

the college years. Yes. This was the genesis

of my lifelong crush on Kelly Packard. Say what

you will about her career and all that. She has

a smile that won't quit and I find that that's

one of the most attractive things I find in a

woman. She's got a nice smile. I love the show.

I like the fact it's kind of like you said, it's

like bell with music. It's like what if the whole

show is Them so what if it was like Zack attack

was like the focus of the series Yeah, it's basically

like if Zack attack had been the main focus of

Saved by the Bell But where where's I and I do

love Saved by the Bell. I mean don't get me wrong.

It's just I like dreams a little bit more Mainly

because I got to see it more often than I did

Bell back in the day, but also because I know

Saved by the Bell at times had that you know

after school special feel a lot. Like I said,

I love the show. I think it's just they didn't

quite have that as much with Dreams, plus they

have the music. It was a little more colorful.

You had Sly, who's pretty well, he's like my

second favorite character in the show. I just

love the show from top to bottom. When I was

in high school and they would play reruns of

this in the afternoon, There were times when,

you know, I'd be going home with my mom instead

of going home on the school bus, so I'd have

to kill an hour after I got out of class, you

know, until she was done working at the bank.

So, you know, I'd go into the cafeteria and they

had, like, a 32 -inch screen TV in there, so

I'd, you know, grab a couple cans of Coke and,

you know, sack out for, like, an hour and just

watch the show, which was awesome. Yeah. I think,

for me, it's... There's, like, parts of it...

Like, I like the characters in Saved by the Bell

a little bit better. Like, I'm drawn more and

attached more to the actual characters in Saved

by the Bell. And I think that this one, the storylines

and the way they act is just a little more over

the top and cheesier. I'm not saying that in

a bad way, but it's just a little bit more...

I mean, they're both over the top and cheesy

situations, but this one to me was just a little

bit more on the cheese factor. But what sold

it for me... because I wasn't as drawn to the

characters and I thought it was a little bit

more cheesy, but the music, just the songs in

and of themselves and the whole situation that

they are a band and they have that type of connection,

it just made it that much different and enough

different that I liked it. To me, this is the

closest anyone else has ever come to replicating

the magic of Saved by the Bell. Oh, yeah. And

I mean, another thing, and we'll certainly get

into it later, is because there's a band, they

didn't... use it so much, and I think from season

two on, but the first season, every episode had

a mini music video, which was awesome. That was

back in the day when I still gave half a crap

about music videos. Basically, this one was going

head -to -head against Save by the Bell, the

new class. I think this is another reason why

Save by the Bell, the new class, didn't work

for me. I went from the regular Save by the Bell,

which I loved, and then we had the college years,

the new class, and this going on. And to me,

Saved by the Bell, the new class kind of fell

to the bottom, whereas this one in college years

I really could get into. And since then, I haven't

felt like any other of these kids' teen sitcoms,

which are mostly nowadays seen, I think, just

about only on Disney and Nickelodeon. You don't

usually get them that often on other channels.

And to me, none of them. since have matched what

California Dreams and then Saved by the Bell

before them have done? Well, yeah, I mean, you

know, because I and I did hear the Newcaste episode

of the telecast and I did agree with a lot of

your guys ideas. It's just my main thing with

Newcaste was unlike Bell, Classic and Dreams

was they didn't change the cast every season.

There was that continuity. There was that familiarity.

And the only other NBC teen sitcom that really

had that was City Guys, which was probably the

last good one they put out before they just diluted

it. I mean, I blame New Class more than anything

for really diluting the idea of the teen sitcom

like this. Right. Just like I said, because all

the cast changes. But no, Dreams, like Bell Classic,

is the one that hit the nail on the head. You

had a solid cast of characters. You had a good

hook. with them being in a band, you still got

the life lessons, you know, and all that, and

it's just all around entertaining. I will say

that it seemed like for me with California Dreams,

and this is kind of leading right into the characters

a little bit, I say I'm more attached to the

Saved by the Bell characters, but the California

Dreams characters seem to provide a little bit

more variety to me. And it's not just in their

ethnic backgrounds and stuff like that, in their

personalities, in their looks. Everything about

California Dreams just seems like it's a little

bit more of an eclectic variety group here. And

I know Save by the Bell had their, you know,

prototypical stereotype personalities that they

were trying to hit on and there was some variety

there, but it just feels like there's a bigger

group of people here, even though it's just about

the same number of characters. Yeah. And almost,

I'd say almost more animated were the, like,

the characters in dreams. Like, you know, you

had Sly, who's like this, you know, greedy car

salesman type character. You had, you know, Tony

Wicks, who, like I said, Sly is my number two.

Tony's my favorite. I like Tony because the way

William James Jones played it was just you know

so animated and expressive and that's kind of

another reason like I said why I like dreams

so much is they were all a little more energetic

not not to say I like I said I love classic I

love all those characters it's just dreams they

had a little bit more energy to him, I think.

Right. And just for the listeners that maybe

are scratching their head because they're hearing

names and they don't quite remember. Maybe they're

clicking for their mouse and trying to search

out some pictures or whatever. But Sly was the

band manager, so to speak. He was kind of the

littler guy as far as height -wise, but a little

muscular kid. But he was the Sly guy. He was

greedy. He was always in for the money. Jake

Summers was the quote -unquote maybe tough guy

of the group. The bad boy. Yeah, the car guy,

almost like a greaser if you want to go there.

Yeah, another jacket, rode a bike. Right. Tony

was the African American of the group for lack

of a better way to describe him. Then you had

a combination, I mean obviously some people came

and went at different times, but you had Mark

Winkle who was Sly's, was that his cousin? Yeah,

it's his cousin from New York. Yeah, who was

kind of a shyer kid, which is weird since she

was from New York, but didn't you kind of get

that vibe from him? He was kind of like the shy,

more reserved kid at times? Yeah, he's like,

you know, you got sly at the one end of that

family spectrum and then, you know, marks at

the other end where he's like a decent guy and

he's a little shy and not terribly assertive,

but you know, he loves music and all that, so.

And then you have the lead singer, Matt, which...

I guess you can call him the lead singer. I mean,

he's basically the front man of the group. He's

almost like a combination of all the other guys.

Yeah, he had a little bit of Tony. He had just

a touch of sly. I saw him as like a really balanced,

like if you took all the best parts of Zach and

made him a bit more of an artist, because that's

what you got. Yeah, instead of the ladies man.

Yeah, like he's a good guy and he's into girls

and all that, but he's also about the music.

And you see a lot of episodes where Matt's just

sitting in shirkies, which, you know, we'll get

into as the hangout. You know, he's sitting there

strumming his guitar, working on the lyrics,

you know, just really, he's really into, he believes

in what he's doing. And that's, again, another

reason why he got into the characters is more

than anything else. Right. And then just to quickly

run down before we talk too much more about the

individual characters, the women of the group,

you obviously had Tiffany Smith, who was played

by Kelly Packer, that's the blonde, the, I don't

know, almost quote unquote cheerleader type of

the group, even though, you know, she had somewhat

airheadier ditzy at times, but, you know, like

you said, she had a great smile, guys liked her.

Then you had Samantha Sam Wu. She was also one

of the main singers in the group. She was the

Asian keyboardist. They definitely went for specific

ethnic individuals because then you also had

Lorena Costa, the Latina bombshell I guess, a

handful of a woman there. Then for a time you

had Jenny Garrison, which we'll get into the

whole Garrison thing here eventually. I don't

really recall Jenny as much. Yeah, I mean, she

was in there in the first couple of seasons.

She was actually the first cast member to leave

the show. And she was blonde also, right? Nope.

Or light brown hair? Well, she had pretty much

the same color hair as Matt because, you know,

brother and sister and all that. Okay, okay.

And yeah, she kind of had that personality. She

was a nice person, but a lot of times she came

up kind of stuck up, kind of Hillary from Fresh

Prince, kind of. I can see that. Yeah, she was

like the... Her and Matt, I mean, for a lot of

the songs in that first while, they were like

the main vocal talent. Right. That brought everything

up, and then Tony played drums, Tiffany played...

I think she played bass. She was always kind

of towards the back, and I could never quite

tell what she was doing sometimes. I'm guessing

Tiffany is your favorite female character? Well,

yeah. No, like I said, I've always had a thing

for... And I think that with Tiffany, I didn't

see her so much as a cheerleader. She was just

really bubbly and very polite. She's a surfer.

She's real friendly. When I look at her and I

look at Jenny, I see Tiffany is Betty and Jenny

was Veronica. For me, the females on this are

much like Saved by the Bell. It's like you have

Kelly, or like on this show you have Tiffany,

and then you just have everybody else who doesn't

even hold a candle. like it's just like there's

the one girl that's that every guy will want

or likes or has a thing for and then there's

all the other girls who are just like okay not

none of them are ugly none of them are repulsive

in any way it's just like there's that one girl

that stands out yeah and that's how this show

was you just kind of latch on to whereas for

me the guys in this series are much less Want

to almost say polarized than they were on saved

by the bell because saved by the bell you had

extremes I mean Zach is the ladies man Slater

is the jock screech is the geek like to the extreme

in all three angles Whereas this one the guys

Kind of straddle that middle line much more Yeah,

they're little more balanced emotionally. I mean

I mean they all do have their quirks still, they

all have their individual personality traits,

but they're also way more centered to the point

where even though I like the guys on Saved by

the Bell better, these guys are almost more believable.

Well yeah, I mean it's outside of Sly who really

took the whole, like I said, car salesman thing

and ran with it. That one... That's as far as

close as you get to an extreme on this one. or

that's sometimes with Tony when Tony would start

freaking out about something. But I think that's

just the way William Jones played the character.

And I guess what I mean by more believable for

those people listening is I never knew a Slater

in high school. I never knew a Screech in high

school. I knew people that wanted to be Zach

in high school, but I don't know if I had anybody

that actually pulled it off. Whereas these characters,

like just taking like a Matt, a Mark or Jake

especially, I can line those up against people

that were those people in high school. Oh yeah.

I knew, because you just looked at the, I'd say

I knew a lot of Matt's, I knew a lot of Tiffany's

and I knew a lot of Jake's. Actually a lot of

my friends in high school, you know, were the

motorheads like that. Right and that's what I'm

saying these guys you can connect to way much

as like that's just like so -and -so who I knew

in high school that's just like my friend so

-and -so you know even I don't necessarily see

myself in any of them per se but I can see bits

and pieces of all these different people I knew

compared to like say by the bell where it's like

I didn't know anybody that fit that mold yeah

my favorite character is I kind of go back and

forth here a little bit. I like Mark just because

he's a little bit more reserved so I can see

myself a little bit more in him when I was in

high school, maybe not so much now. I like Sly

just because he's Sly. I mean that's a perfect

name for him and I definitely have a little bit

of that in me. So I like those two guys the best

and for the girls I like Tiffany the best easily.

Yeah. I remember one episode where she walked

in and she has like this huge bite taken out

of her surfboard and I was like... Just something

but she comes in she's like all distressed. She's

like, ah, man. It sure took a fight out. I was

like Robert John's just about swallowed you whole

She's like a hundred and ten pounds soaking wet.

Oh, yeah, definitely She comes in it's like wow,

that's a tough chick. Yeah, was there any characters

that you didn't like? Not really. Okay. I was

really annoyed with Dennis garrison who's like

Matt and Jenny's brother in the first season

You know, I just wanted to smack the taste out

of his mouth half the time. But other than that,

you know, there's really no other characters

I dislike. I love Sharkey. As much as I like

Max and, you know, all the other guys that like

rant the adult type characters and Bell and all

this, you know, I love Sharkey because he's like,

you know, this New Yorker guy comes out. He's

like that kind of gruff, tough, but, you know,

heart of gold sort of. type of character and

I love Sharkey. I mean, come on, the guy's name

is Sharkey. That's awesome. If there was one

character that I had to put in my least favorite,

it would probably be Matt. There's just something

that bugged me about Matt. You don't trust the

quiet ones? No, it's not that he was so much

quiet. It was just something about him bugged

me. I don't know. I like the quiet as far as

the way Mark was quiet. The way Matt was quiet

was a little bit different to me. But I didn't

dislike him. If I had to pick one out of the

whole group that was my least favorite, I'd pick

him. And he brought it. You brought up another

point though about the adults. They're really,

this show is completely driven by the kids to

the point where you almost don't even realize

any adults ever show up besides Sharkey. Oh yeah.

I mean, the parents were there in the first season,

the Sharkeys appeared sporadically throughout.

And you do get the occasional adult influence

here and there, like when they're trying to get

a gig or they run into, occasionally they run

into a teacher at the school. But yeah, it's

by and large, it's pretty much just the kids.

Which is another thing that differentiates it

from the different Save by the Bell ones where

you always had a principal or you had teachers

or you had parents involved, you know, consistently

throughout the episodes. Oh, yeah. And just for

the sake of being a completist and not angering

any of our other sometimes hosts, we should mention

that there were a few guest stars. Nicky Cox

and Jamie Kennedy appeared at different times

in California Dreams. Amongst other people, those

were the two biggest names I saw. Oh, yeah. Do

you remember those any of those episodes where

those two appeared in? Not really the guy I Want

to say Nikki Cox appeared as a blind girl unless

I'm confusing her with another character that

appeared on the show Yeah, like I do have the

first two seasons Yeah, that's just 10 bucks

a pop and I had $20 on me I was like store excellent,

but I don't I do kind of remember seeing them,

but I'm not sure where and you know, it's Yeah,

it's kind of like when we did Belle Classic and

I was like, Tori Stetlake was in this? You know,

it's just like, wow, I totally don't remember

that, so. Yeah. Any other thoughts as far as

the characters go? Anything that we haven't mentioned

that you like or didn't like about them? Well,

the one thing I mean, because when we were just

talking a minute ago about how there is almost,

well, not necessarily a lack, but there wasn't

as much parental guidance in this show as Belle.

is I think that kind of goes towards how these

characters were a little more evenly balanced,

a little more real in a way. Because if you had

a school full of characters like Zack, Screech,

Slater, Jesse, and all the other archetypes,

cliches that they had, well, yeah, you'd probably

want to have adults in there a lot more often

because you don't want the inmates running the

asylum. Right. And again, I think that's something

I liked a little bit more about dreams is that

it seemed as animated as the characters were

in this show. They just didn't seem like they

would need parental supervision as often. That's

a good point actually. I never thought of it

like that. Because if they're making, they're

doing a band and they're out there and they're

kind of doing their own deal like that. and the

parents aren't like holding their hand all the

time. I think that shows a certain level of maturity

for the characters. Which is not something you

get with Saved by the Bell until you go to the

college years because in the Saved by the Bell

classic it seemed like every time they were left

alone something bad happened like if they were

driving a car and they got in an accident, if

they're at the mall and they run into all these

kind of problems. It's like every time they were

outside of the school structure or doing you

know something without supervision they got in

trouble. Yeah. This one if they got in trouble

they... They'd try and fix it, but then they

would go for help, but they don't try to cover

it up the way Zack and the gang would. Right.

And for those of you Nicky Cock fans out there,

the two episodes that she was in were called

Blind Dates and The Long Goodbye, and she did

play the blind girlfriend of Sly. Oh, wow. So

I actually one of those for sure is on YouTube

that I watched before the record and I was like

I think that's Nikki Cox and Yeah, she plays

on the blind girlfriend of slime. It's a decent

episode. Yeah, so you guys can search that out

I don't know I didn't see the one that Jamie

Kennedy was in so I'll leave that up to the listeners

to find on their own But yeah, I think just to

sum up the characters before we move on, like

you said, they're just a little bit more believable,

a little bit more relatable. I do like the characters

better as far as I felt I had a better attachment

to the Saved by the Bell ones just because maybe

I wanted to be with them or I wanted to be with

those characters or I wanted to be one of those

characters because they were so unreal. But this

one I do feel that they were definitely more

lifelike. So I think that does it for the characters

and we are going to move into our next section

which... you all should know by now is the good

the bad the ugly that's right it's time for the

good the bad and the ugly of california dreams

um we gotta just get this out of the way right

as we begin here because something that made

this show what it was in my opinion and made

you want to keep tuning in like you said before

is this epic epic theme song oh yeah i mean it's

Like I said, like after, okay, I'm going to,

I'm going to recant something. Second best theme

song. I do love college years, but it has just

maybe a little too much energy for me. Whereas

this one has like, you know, it's the, and the

cool thing about the song is that the cast did

a lot of singing in this show and a lot of the

cast actually sang the theme song, which Is one

of those things, you know, it's easy to remember,

you know, it's got that nice cook. It's not so

It's it's just sweet enough. It's not like was

it sacrosanct or how whatever the word it's not

overpowering and it's Sweetness, it's just it's

just perfect. Yeah, and this is this is a song

that's been in my on my iTunes from the beginning

Like most people have just regular songs like

I mean I know I'm weird because I have a whole

selection of theme songs and TV songs on my iTunes

but this is one of the very first ones I sought

out and just like California dreams got to have

that song and Like it's just something I can

listen to over and over again, and I have never

ever in the whatever third 15 years now has it

been since this show was on 92 Oh Jesus almost

been like 20 years, isn't it? Well, this is 96

since it ended. Yeah, it's like 15 years 15 years

since it's ended and not you know, almost 20

years since it began next year will be the 20th

anniversary from when it began and In 20 years,

it has not got old that team song. Oh, yeah.

No, it's it's just it's like Saved by the bell,

you know, it just holds up to me the save by

the bell one is when you know more and when you

can recite the words for easier just because

it was a little bit more of a mainstream show

for a while But this one is the better, from

an actual music standpoint, this is the better

song. Oh yeah. Because, and it should be because

they're a musical group. Oh, duh. Yeah, no, it's

just, it's one of those things that just, it

holds up so well. It's kind of like the, you

know, you go to like the 1960s Spider -Man cartoon,

you know, it's not, it's just one of those songs,

it's got that bombastic. sort of thing that hooks

you and stays with you. The same thing with the

California Dreams is I think a lot of people

up to this point with theme songs, it's real

loud and punchy and here's something, it's a

little more sedate, it's a little slower but

it still has that emotion and that's the biggest

thing with music for me in any subject or genre

is it's not so much the lyrics, it's the emotion

in the music. That's what I listen to and when

you listen to this song you can't help but just

like de -stress and Want to be walking along

a beach listening to this song. It's that powerful.

Yep, I agree with you wholeheartedly And one

of the things we've kind of alluded to is that

there there was some differences at the beginning

of the show and then as it progressed so I want

to get into a little bit of the evolution of

California dreams a little bit A lot of people

don't know this or don't remember this, but the

original format was meant to be a family sitcom.

It was not a teen, completely liked, saved by

the bell type sitcom. It was supposed to be more

of a family one focusing on, like we said before,

the Garrison family, which we're familiar with,

Matt and Jenny. But then there was also the mom,

the dad, and like you said, the youngest son,

Dennis. And it basically was, I mean, if you

watch a few of the episodes at the beginning,

like the pilot or some of these first season

episodes, it looks bizarre because you don't

remember it like that set in an actual house.

Yeah. Because you never hardly ever, it went

more the save by the bell route after this first

season where you hardly ever saw anything set

in a house. You saw things set in a garage. You

saw things set at the, at Sharkey's, at the school.

You didn't usually get stuff actually in people's

kitchens. Yeah, and if you did get stuff in the

garrison house, the parents were never there.

Like they would show it sporadically, but it's

about as often as the adults did, you know, the

fad the parents did in like Bell. Right. And

it's usually just the kids, you know, they're

in there, they're working on like Jake's bike

in the garage or they're taking a break from

rehearsing or something like that. And in the

beginning it was just the garrisons and then

we had Tiffany, Tony and Sly. That's your group

from the beginning, just the two garrison kids

as far as the band goes, and then you had Tiffany,

Tony, and Sly, and none of those other people

were in it. In between season one and season

two is when the NBC execs decided to change things

and refocus it on the teens, so we had a few

changes. A fifth member was introduced. That

would have been Jake. very early in season two

left the show. Now, what you might not know is

that apparently, according to the show, she left

for a music school opportunity in Italy, is how

they wrote that in there. And then you immediately

got a new character, which was Sam, or Samantha,

depending on how you knew her. So that's the

big changes there is we saw one of the family

members go as well as the family itself go, and

then the incoming of Jake and Sam. So how did

you feel about that change in between season

one and season two? Well, you know, the family

thing didn't bother me a whole lot because it's

not that I didn't care about the family, it's

just they didn't matter to me. I was more invested

in the band, in the group as a whole. Jenny's

character, Yeah, I mean she she was okay. Like

I said, I didn't hate her and they didn't love

her either and It's kind of like, you know I

kind of like the whole idea that she was this

kind of you know Valley girl a little stuck up

and then they bring in Jake who they kind of

canoodled for a bit in the show before she left,

you know, his obvious charms were wearing her

down and I could kind of see that because you

see that coming a mile ways You got the stuck

-up pretty girl. You got the bad boy with a bike

and all of a sudden they're like making the goo

-goo eyes And then she took off for the music

school thing, which is bound to happen. I mean,

it certainly didn't seem outside the realm of

possibility. Right. And they brought in Sam.

And Sam is probably one of my favorite female

characters in the show. Because again, she's

that really sweet and being an exchange student.

She was really excitable and always wanted to

try the new stuff. And I kind of took to that

a little bit, just the way Sam is like. You can

call girls by the shorthand of their name. But

she's a girl. You can't call her Sam. It's just

stuff like that I love. And yeah, the second

season, I changed it up a little bit, but I don't

think it necessarily hurt the show in any way.

Right. And the way they introduced her was, and

this is kind of ironic as it'll come into season

three, but Sam was introduced as a foreign exchange

student. And then eventually they heard her sing

and that's why she became a member of the band.

I don't remember exactly how they played the

Jake entry into the show where he came about,

but Sam was definitely the foreign exchange student

angle. I know when they first introduced Jake,

I forget if it was Sly or Matt, but someone's

talking trash about Jake in the Cherokees and

he's standing behind him with this like... smirk

on his face and made the babbling belly that

he's standing right behind me oh yeah say what

you will about gags that is like classic gang

that will never stop being funny no not at all

and then in between season two and season three

we have some more changes and this is the ironic

twist here california dreams is matt leaves the

show which means that there is no more garrisons

at all in the show So it started to be a show

about this garrison family and by season three

there is not a single member of the family left.

Yeah Which caused a reason for a new character

because Sam the foreign exchange student was

in the garrison's home Yeah, and I mean that's

why you still have the house But there's like

you bring in two new characters with this third

season you bring in you know the aforementioned

Mark Winkle like a Sly's cousin comes in he kind

of takes over as guitarist and keyboardist to

some degrees. He's like this music nerd. Like

I said, complete opposite of sly. And then you

bring in Lorena, who's like the rich Latina girl

who basically her family adopts Sam. We needed

somewhere for Sam to go. And then you got like

a new practice space instead of the Garrison

Garage. You got that really awesome loft, sort

of like attic play set. for them to rehearse

in, which was awesome. Now, it should be explained

to some people, maybe they don't remember, but

not everybody was a member of the band, so to

speak. Sly, he never partook in any of the musical

part, he was just the manager. And Lorena is

like a groupie. Yeah, and I think she ended up...

At some point she started working with Slime,

working to get them gigs. I think she might even

have been an investor when they're out of guitar

strings or something like that. Yeah, because

she had the rich family. So those two were not

really necessarily the music makers of the group.

The rest of them were the guitar players, the

keyboard players, the singers, et cetera. Out

of those three seasons, was there a specific

format that you liked the best? Between the group

that we had for season three or the group we

had for season two or the original group which

obviously Neither one of us would pick. Well,

it's you know, I love the first season I mean,

that's what got me hooked because I did come

in watching that Unfortunately when it debuted

but I kind of like basically from season two

on you know I was kind of bummed out when Matt

left because he you know He's kind of the like

the main guy and it's like the main guy left

you bring in these new characters They kept going

and it's not quite as good So I think my favorite

season is season two. See, I liked Mark better

than Matt, but I'm with you. I prefer season

two. Yeah. But I mean, from then on, it's like,

I don't think they ever really dropped in quality

at that much after Matt left. Like I said, I

was just bummed out that, you know, one of my

favorite characters, you know, not as much as

Sly and Tony, but, you know, I still liked Matt

because, like you said, he was the artist and

he was kind of like almost the The in the intro

to the story for a lot of fans He's like he's

like the straight man to everybody else's wacky

character, right? I always find this odd but

uh, we get to the series finale because apparently

after five seasons They're ready to end their

high school careers Not four seasons folks Five

Riddle me this They were all on the five -year

plan apparently And there is a whole you know

they knew this they actually knew it's one of

those shows I knew this show was coming to an

end So they did it right and they actually have

a series finale where they actually explain You

know who goes which way this way and that way

and how they break up and then they have a tearful

Last gig as the California dreams before everybody

goes their separate ways And I always like it

when a show is able to end with an actual ending.

Yeah, it had a beginning, a middle, and an ending.

It might have changed a lot along the way. Yeah.

Damn it, stop shaking things up. But it did end.

Yeah. And no, I like that because you read the

description of the finale. You see Tiffany's

going to school, Sam's going to school, Tony's...

Everyone's going to school except Jake. Who wants

the group to stay together. Yeah. If as you watch

the series, you know, Jake hasn't had like the

best life and you know, there's certainly a more

than I think Jake had more than any other cast

member had a lot of Jake centric episodes. Just

because of the lighting, because he comes not

really from a broken home, but he's had a rough

go, and he sees the band as his family, as his

safety net, and now someone's trying to take

the safety net away, and he's like, no, no, no,

no, no, I still need that. And it's like the

characters grow, and you didn't have to go through

a spin -off series and then a TV movie to get

resolution for the characters like Bell. Not

knocking film just saying they managed to do

it all in the show and it yeah It's like one

of those endings that you know, I teared up a

little bit to watching this because it's like

You know what the hell? So yeah, I love the I

love the way they ended it, you know, it ended

it on a very high note, you know, you they're

growing up they're getting mature and They're

you know, you get the idea. They'll always be

friends. Yeah, so right No, I agree with you,

and like I said, I just like it when shows are

able to end on a note like that. This other note

that I have there we're going to wait a second

on, is there any other things about the show

itself, parts of the show or aspects of the show

that we haven't hit on, good, bad, anything that

you'd like to get before we move on to the next

section? Okay, maybe talk about Sharky's. Now,

like I said in the Bell episode, I did want to

go and hang out at the Max. I did, but I didn't

want to hang out the max nearly as much as I

wanted to hang out at It's like a surf and turf

restaurant. You got all the goofy stuff on the

wall, which I'm the type of guy that loves to

go to restaurants like that. It had some personality

to the place. You got a band there with the Dreams.

You got some arcade games. It seemed more of

a happen and hangout than the Max ever did. Maybe

it was just because the extreme 80s -ness of

the Max with the neon and the crazy angles on

the wall. I like it. I wanted Shurikis to be

real, more than I ever did the Max. That's enough

for either of them being real. Yeah. Maybe I'm

just a guy. Like I said, it's got the colors

and the 80s design, but at the same time, the

Max seemed kind of plain. There's a lot of that

gray and white and very sedate. That's true.

Whereas Shurikis, you've got the wood and you've

got the aqua color. If you know anything about

me, know that I enjoy going to places that have

a personality, that have a quality to them, and

that's what Sharkey's had. I just want to go

to Max to see if I can run into Kelly Kapowski.

That's my reason. I hope you get out of the leg

irons you will be in, sir, because I will get

to her first. Excellent. Just hear some cartoon

fight outside the door. It's like what's going

on out there? Yeah, I can't think of too much

bad stuff or ugly stuff to say about the show.

I mean You know for some people it might be a

little bit too over -the -top. It might be a

little bit too high on the cheese factor But

that's what a sitcom is supposed to be Well,

I mean you look at like I said earlier in the

show. It's just how Bell and California Dreams

were probably the best examples of the teen sitcoms.

I mean, you look at the other shows that NBC

put out, they had Hangtime, which was about a

basketball team at this school, but it suffered

from the new class syndrome where they kept replacing

the characters. Sometime in the middle of the

season, they removed two or three characters.

I mean, the only thing I remember about that

show was it was more or less the acting debut

of Anthony Anderson, who I'm a huge fan of. You

had City Guys, which is another really good show.

After Dreams is probably my favorite NBC teen

sitcom for having the odd couple of the white

guy and the black guy in the New York school.

I mean, there's other shows that they're basically

produced by the same company, but they weren't

on NBC. There was USA High, which I saw in the

USA Network, which everyone in that cast You

know that show Tony William Jones showed up in

that show in the second season as a new character

But the whole cast that like, you know, they

say in a lot of these shows everyone looks like

they're 30 Everyone on USA High looked like they

were 30. Yeah And then you've had a whole gamut

of Disney teen shows that have been Not even

worth naming. Well, yeah, but at least they look

like teens, but I mean, yeah Jackson the main

guy in USA High looked like he was 35 And then

they had, was it Malibu .ca where they... Oh,

I barely remember that one. Oh yeah, it's like

they had the twins on that show who were always

breaking the fourth wall, Alizak. Yeah, and then

you had like, you had Hangin' Tough and I think

it was Hangin' Tough or Hangtime. Yeah, Hangtime.

So yeah, it's just basically you got out of...

There's only three good examples out of this,

but there was a lot of crap. Yeah, there was

a lot of crap to sift through. And you know,

this one, they had that... Walk that line very

dangerously of changing the cast almost too much.

And I can see some people having a problem with

the way that the first season doesn't necessarily

resemble the rest of the seasons as far as if

you're going to try to watch it all straight

through or something like that, or if you're

going to watch it consecutively. But I think

if you just take it as what it was and you ignore

some of those issues, it's overall a pretty good

show. Oh, yeah. No, it's one of those, like I

said, it's all around. And if you think about

it, Saved by the Bell did the same thing, it

just did it in different versions. Instead of

carrying on and just calling it season two or

whatever, you had separate shows where Good Morning

Miss Bliss changed a lot of characters over to

Save by the Bell, but it was two separate shows.

And then you changed characters again to the

college years where new class is not involved

in this discussion. You change it over characters,

but then you have a new show called the college

year. So they actually waited until a point where

you could actually change the entire format of

a show in order to do that, which made it a little

bit more smooth, I think. Oh yeah, yeah. No,

it's just that's the thing it's like I said it

had a beginning a middle and end it didn't have

to Have what it was. I'm not knocking colleges

when I call it a spin -off, but it was essentially

a spin -off sequel series and then they had the

TV movie and to end that story then the one thing

that dreams did better as they did all within

the series That's true So I think that does it

for the good the bad and the ugly and we are

gonna move on to Our next section, which is cue

the music Things that make you go hmm That's

right. It's time for some things that you might

not know about California dreams The first thing,

which we always try to get the awards out of

the way, you might not know that California Dreams

was actually nominated for some awards. It was

nominated in 93 for a Young Artist Award for

the Outstanding Young Ensemble Cast in a Youth

Series or Variety Show. It also got a Best Young

Actress nominee for The Sister. Jenny. Yes. And

then a Best Young Actor in an Off Primetime Series

for Ryan O 'Neil who... That was Dennis. Dennis.

Wow. That surprises me. And then the next year

it was also again nominated for the Youth Ensemble

and it also got a Daytime Emmy nomination for

Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling. Oh wow.

I don't know what is the criteria that you judge

hairstyling in different shows. What is the deal?

Like, why is there an award for that? I don't

know. You got an award for best kiss at the MTV

movie. That's true. Well, that's a whole different

thing. The second thing that you might not know

about California Dreams, I was going to say California

Raisins, is although most of the cast do their

own singing at the show, the singing voices of

Jake and Mark were actually sung by two individuals

named Zachary Throne and Barry Coffin. This I

don't find it interesting that those two didn't

do their voices. I find it interesting that the

rest of the cast basically did do their voices

Yeah, because that's something that you don't

see a lot in these types of shows Yeah, and then

send you know, like the aforementioned Disney

shows, you know knock on wood that they'll never

be covered here But yeah, it's like that's the

big thing and this was like Again, this is a

huge reason why I like the shows that They play

their own instruments, then most of them are

singing their own lyrics. And it's just like,

you never saw this before. Right. It wasn't like

Zack Attack where you obviously had different

people dubbing their voices over the visuals.

You know what I mean? You mean Mark Paul Gosselaar

didn't sing? What? How dare you speak like that?

That wasn't Slater and Jesse actually singing

to each other at the costume ball? Oh my god,

all my illusions are shattered. They did do a

great job of finding people that actually sounded

somewhat like those individuals. Yeah. Which

is a weird process. I don't know how you find

those people, but... Yeah. I mean, it's maybe

they just had similar sounding voices and then

you don't... It's like, we're auditioning for

voices that sound exactly like this guy speaks.

Yeah. But I give say -by -the -bell credit for

getting people that did sound somewhat believable,

even though you knew it wasn't. But this one,

yeah, it's just like legitimately most of them

are the exact same singers. Most of them are

doing their instruments. There might have been

one or two that were faking that, but most of

them are doing that. So it's just a quality that

you appreciate. Yeah. No, that's cool. I mean,

you kind of appreciate that most of them did

that. I mean, that's a really awesome thing,

especially at a time when It's easy to go a different

route if you wanted to. Exactly. And the third

thing you might not know about California Dream's

last bit of trivia I could find is that Matt

actually, he wasn't written out so to speak.

He actually left the show because he had a clash

with the creators on how Matt should be portrayed

going on in the season and in the show. So apparently

a difference of opinions between Matt and the

show's big wigs caused him to leave the show.

Oh yeah. And Brian Mark. So that was an unplanned

one so you can't really blame anybody for that

one so to speak as having to change that character

out. Oh yeah. So that does it for the things

you might not know about California Dreams and

now we're gonna go to where they are now and

before we get into the individuals well where

they were recently was on the Jimmy Fallon show.

I know that was so awesome. Jimmy Fallon, if

you don't know, has always been trying to do

these types of reunions. He's been trying to

get the Save by the Bell people, and we've talked

about that in previous episodes. But he actually

did get seven of the California Dreams cast members

together. The only ones that were missing were

those season three people, Lorena and Mark. So

he got all the ones basically from seasons one

and season two, and it aired March of 2010, so

just a little over about a year and a half ago.

Wasn't that because I saw the video on YouTube

sort of interrupt but he's he mentioned that

you know He'd been it's the first year anniversary

and they were trying he wanted to celebrate with

the saved by the Bell reunion Couldn't get him.

Yeah, cuz he got Mario. He got Dennis Haskins

He got Zack Morris, which was awesome. Yeah,

I got everybody but Kelly and yeah, so screech

Well, do you really want to put a camera on Dustin

Diamond nowadays? No. I don't think he's allowed

to be on camera anymore. But he came up with

this awesome alternate, and he actually pulled

it off with the reunion. I wish it would have

been longer, though. Oh, yeah. And the one thing

watching the video is you look... Well, Kelly

Packard still... She still looks pretty young,

but she's starting to show. She's like Tiffany

Thies. She's aged a little bit, but she's aging

very well. Yeah, and most of them have kids or

are married. Yeah, and still working. I love

the fact that you look at William James Jones

and Ginny Kwan. They still look the same. Yeah,

some of them you can see them easily. Sly looks

almost identical. Oh yeah, Sly looked identical.

I mean, Brent Gore who played Matt, you know,

he's still got that baby face going on, but you

can see a little bit of age in there. Jake, to

me, or JZF, Frankie, because he was bald. Yeah,

he put some weight on him. He put some weight

on him and was bald, so it was kind of hard to

recognize him, and I think Heidi looked a little

bit different. Heidi Lienhardt. No, she looked

good. I mean, Jay Anthony, is it Frankie or Frank?

Because I always say Frankie. I always say Frankie

when they introduce him. Jake, anyhow. I mean,

it looked like him, but until he spoke, I was

kind of like, eh, maybe not. But no, and then

they ended it like, okay, they had the thing

where Ginny Kwan's telling everyone what she's

doing. She gets tongue -tied. It's just like

Sam. She's still got that real sweet cuteness

to her, because she's like, oh my god, she's

laughing and horribly embarrassed. Then they

had, you got a baboom from Sly. And then Fallon

is like, come on, let's see those rock hard abs

again. I was like, dude, come on. It's like,

holy crap, he's still built. Yeah. Made him take

his shirt off. And we also had a special appearance

by Dennis Haskins, Mr. Belding. And then they

ended it with them actually doing a live version

of the theme song. Yeah. With the band? With

the band, yeah. It's like, oh my god. So Sly

slid off to the side, and that's kind of hard

to say very fast. Sly slid off to the side. And

everybody else basically did it. I think it was

pretty fake. I believe that Heidi was not actually

playing the piano, if you watch closely, I believe.

But they were all singing, and it was good. It

was almost like they had just been doing it last

year. Maybe they rehearsed. But to go down, you

can find the Jimmy Fallon reunion on YouTube,

so go search that out and you can see what they

all look like today, or as far as a year and

a half ago, and see which ones look the same

and which ones change, like we've been talking

about. But just to go a little bit down the line

here, I'd say Kelly Packard is probably, as far

as the show business goes, is the most successful

out of the group, post -California Dreams. She

had a big run in Baywatch. right after, somewhat

during the same time. I didn't know this, that

she appeared as a celebrity guest on the Donny

Osmond version of the game show Pyramid, and

she had the fastest time in a wintered circle

in 27 seconds, only one second slower than Billy

Crystal's all -time winter circle record. Yeah.

And she was also a co -host on TBS's Ripley's

Believe It or Not with Superman himself, Dean

Cain. Yep. So she's out there. She's still looking

good. Oh yeah. Sly has been, he's been doing

a lot of work. They're more, I don't want to

say necessarily independent stuff, but it's -

A lot of bit parts. Yeah, little bit parts and

TV movies and stuff that you probably wouldn't

have heard of, but he's still in the business,

obviously. Jenny, Sam, a resident voice actor

in the group. Suki on Avatar the Last Airbender.

She's also done a couple of voices on random

cartoons. So she's very much into the voice acting

now, which is near and dear to my heart. Brent

Gore, who was Matt, he's been doing kind of a

combination of acting a little bit here and there,

but he's very much into music. He's put out a

couple different albums. The last one was just

this year in 2011 called Up Until Now. So he's

kind of... Balancing the acting slash music career

and then I was like looking on the info here

like he's in a band called the King straggler

with John Hawks who if you're a Deadwood fan

like I am you'll know him from that and Also,

Rodney Eastman who I was like, why does that

name sound familiar? I looked it up. He played

Joey in Nightmare on Elm Street three and four.

I was like, that's kind of cool Know that you

know interesting I didn't know about Heidi, who

was Matt's sister on the series, that she was,

number one, the daughter of an ex -Playboy model,

and that she is stepdaughter of Haim Saban. Power

Rangers will never go away. Oh Saban Entertainment,

and I don't think of Heim Saban. When I see here

that Heim Saban, I do not think of Power Rangers.

I think of all the other Saban stuff that has

been done in the past that was much better. You

try to think of anything but that. I never think

of it. I forgot that they were even in charge

of Power Rangers until you just said that because

I was thinking about all the Saban cartoons that

came out in the 80s and stuff. I totally couldn't

see that. I had to bring that up because... Damn

you. It's never going away. She also appeared

in the reboot of Beverly Hills 90210 a couple

years back. Really? Yep. Well, I must have stopped

watching before she was on. According to IMDB,

she was at least. Other than that, let's see.

Jake, the video game Deuce X. I don't play video

games, so I don't know, but he does a couple

of things in that. What is it called? Deus Ex.

Deus Ex. Thank you. I'm not a video game person.

But he's done a couple of voices in that. J .C.

Denton and Paul Denton. He also spends a lot

of time in Australia. Because I remember even

at the reunion they said that he flew in from

Australia. So he's kind of back and forth between

America and Australia. And your guy, William

James Jones, he's done a little bit here and

there. It doesn't seem like he's doing much right

now. But, you know, Living Single, The West Wing,

The District, The Pretender have all been shows

within the last 10 years that he's appeared in.

Yeah, because I think after, like I said, after

Dreams was over, I think he's the only one that

really stayed in the teen sitcom thing, because,

you know, he did the second season of USA High,

and I think he was in an episode or two of City

Guys, although I'm not certain about that. But

he's just, yeah, he's the guy, you know, I think

he's probably had the, dare I say, the biggest

career. Yeah, him and Kelly Packard. Yeah, and

well, you mean, you took a Diana Ribaier. Ribaier?

Lorena. Yeah. You know, I've seen her in a lot

of, yeah, like a lot of bit parts, a lot of things.

But nothing since 2001, so she's pretty much

gone on to other things. And the family, the

rest of the family from season one, they, some

of them didn't do anything after California Dreams,

as far as entertainment world goes. Yeah, just

cricket. Cricket yes, I mean that's not saying

that people aren't doing stuff in the you know

You that only stuff in entertainment world is

important, but yeah, that's what the show is

about so We're gonna take a quick break. You're

released. Season five is a waiting release, maybe.

And the fourth season, the last one, was just

released this past January 18th. And that was

released just as a Shout Factory select title,

which is available exclusively through their

online store. Each set, I mean, you get sets

for $10. If you want to pay more close to full

price, you'll spend like $25 to $30 on each set.

You have some of these, right? Yeah, I've got

the well I got the first and second season set

I found it at a Liquidation store for like ten

bucks. So I mean obviously it'd been income down.

It'd been out for a while There are no there

are no special features are there? Not really

I unless I don't I have to look at I don't have

it next to me, but I'm not sure if it was I Don't

believe there is yeah, I'd have to look it up

just to be certain So you can get them on DVD,

so that's obviously going to be the best quality

you can get. Netflix, I don't have an account

with Netflix right now, so I can't guarantee

that they're available, but it says that seasons

one and two are available on Netflix. It doesn't

list anything for season three or four, especially

since season four seems to be like a Shout Factor

exclusive thing. I wouldn't expect that to show

up on Netflix, but if you have Netflix streaming

or through the mail, you can probably get seasons

one or two that way. It is not available on iTunes

that I could find. There is quite a few episodes

available on YouTube. Oh yeah. And they're actually

pretty good quality. Yeah, you got some video

tape transfers. And you got some that are just

little bits and pieces, but you have a lot of

three part, you know, full episodes. I haven't

looked at it recently, but months ago I watched

the pilot. You can see the last episode. You

can see different things here and there. So you

have a couple different options. If you're a

huge fan and you want, as part of your collection,

you can go through the DVD route. If you want

to just catch up and watch quite a few episodes

on YouTube, the cheap way, you can do it that

way too. Anything else about the DVD releases

or your experience with the YouTube? No. When

I found it on YouTube, You know years ago. It's

like awesome, and I got the DVD inside Really

have no problem with that I still need to get

the say about the belt collection on DVD so once

I do that Maybe I'll think about the California

dreams so that leads us right into our ratings

for this show the IGN replacement crew As far

as one two three or four What are we giving California

dreams JT if you give it anything less than a

four I'll hurt you So you're giving into four

oh, yes Not that I would actually hurt Kevin,

folks. I'm just saying. I'm torn here. I'm doing

a balance nap between three and four. That's

fair. Because I did love this show back then,

and I would watch it if I found it on TV. I enjoyed

watching it on YouTube. I'm not quite at the

point where I'm ready to say pull the trigger

and add it to my DVD collection, whereas I desperately

want to say buy the bell collection on DVD. But

when I say desperately, it's not like I can't

get it. I just for some reason haven't yet. And

not that I wasn't not looking for it. It's just

I had $10. Right. You couldn't pass up that deal.

Oh, hell no. But yeah, it's just a notch still

below saved by the bell for me, which I think

is fair. So, JT, sum it all up. What are your

thoughts? You love this show. What are your thoughts

of it 20 years later? one of the best theme songs

of all time one of the best teen sitcoms of all

time and It holds up very well. Like honestly

if they put this on TV now, I think it would

still do pretty good Yeah, honestly, you could

do this exact show as long as you change the

outfits and the wardrobe because obviously the

fashion is obviously dated But you know kids

love the music nowadays everybody's loving glee

and that type of stuff. This is a show that You

could have taken it out of the 90s and put it

in right now and it would be thriving. Oh yeah,

no, there's no doubt. And it would be way better

than that Disney shit we get. I know Mike's a

big fan of Disney kids' live -action shows, but

this would blow that out of the water if they

did an updated version of this. In terms of straight

-up quality, yeah. Well, dare I say heart. There

is a buttload of heart and more heart in one

episode of California Dreams than an entire season

of Zack and Cody. Well, it would almost be more

likely, California Dreams would almost be more

likely to be successful in our day and age than

Saved by the Bell would be if they were to redo

both series. Because we're in such a music centered

entertainment. environment right now with shows

and with contests and reality shows that I think

people would latch onto a show like California

Dreams if it was redone and done right and then

put on one of those channels that will remain

nameless. Nickelodeon maybe could do it. I don't

know, I just don't trust Disney with this type

of stuff. No, I could see California Dreams,

like even if the rights were bought by Nickelodeon

and they just rebroadcast it on Nick. There are

a couple of shows on Nick that I do like watching

and I'm entertained. They're not necessarily

as good as Dreams and all that, but you've got

to be honest about this. Like you said, it's

one of the best teen sitcoms of all time, and

if it wasn't for Saved by the Bell, it would

be the best. You've got to draw that distinction.

What a lot of shows that Nick has on and Disney

has on, they're kids or tween shows. None of

them really look like they're ... Well, they

usually focus on one or two individuals. It's

not this ensemble like we have in a school setting

like this where it's following the kids and there's

not the family factor. The shows nowadays more

resemble a Clarissa Explains It All than they

do a Save By The Bell or California Dreams. That's

exactly it. So I think that sums it up. I'd like
