About this Episode

We discuss three episodes of the 2008 Knight Rider series. We break down the Mission Impossible-style infiltration in A Hard Day's Night, the militia-focused plot of Knight of the Hunter, and the Halloween-themed heist in Night of the Living Dead. We talk about the evolving character dynamics, the show's departure from the traditional "villain of the week" format, and how these episodes successfully build on the series' ongoing continuity.

Michael, are you all right? Yeah. I just hate

these masks. I can't see a damn thing. May I

discard my disguise as well? Just be careful.

Last thing we need is camera phone footage of

you transforming on YouTube. What's going on?

Yeah, that does not get old. Welcome to Beyond

the Night brought to you by the GCRN. I am one

of your host TFJRMAI again. Joining me is Dion

the Music Man. Hello. Hey, we're back again to

review some more episodes. And we have exactly

from this point, as soon as episode 45 is released

on geekcastradio .com, we have 10 episodes left

of the podcast. And that's kind of sad. It has

been a fun ride. It has. It has been. And it

will continue to be a fun ride. It's just been

really, really cool. It's been great. And people

will be like, why do you end on episode 55? And

it's just something... I originally wanted to

end on 50 episodes or 60 episodes. I tried to...

I'm sure if I dragged some of those Team Knight

Rider episodes out to be longer, I could have

gotten it to 60 episodes, but I didn't want to

since that show sucks. I'm sure if I reworked

how we did the original series reviews, I could

have figured it out to get it to 60 episodes,

but it couldn't. And then I'm thinking, okay,

well, we can talk episode. I think it's episode

50 that starts the after coverage. Let me actually

look right now as I'm talking to you find people

through the internet and i'm scrolling scrolling

okay uh... yes episode forty nine will be the

two thousand eight series recap episode fifty

through fifty four will be uh... uh... three

of them will be music spotlights another one

will be merchandise of night rider so we'll talk

about games toys books clothes hats lunchboxes,

all that kind of stuff. Episode 54 will be KR

Customs, because there are a lot of Knight Rider

Customs out there. And Episode 55 will be the

finale. And it's, like I said, ending it on 55

is kind of stupid. If anyone, if you or anyone

else originally had the TV tunes, televisions,

greatest hits, Volume 6 remote control... I do!

episode a track 55 is the original Knight Rider

theme I have that that and I figure oh hey the

speed limit usually is 55 usually 55 miles an

hour let me see here Course what's also funny

in the classic episode when he's talking to the

when Michael is talking to the police officer

In speed racer. I think it is or Speed racers

or something might have to look but he says to

the officer 55 stay alive. Yeah. Yeah The greatest

hits Remote control here we go Yep track 55 was

night, right? Six track 56 was airwolf So yeah,

we have ten episodes left of the show it's been

a fun two -year ride actually with episode 55

the grand finale We are going to air that September

26th. Oh, how funny. Yup. That not only is the

original... That was the original airdate. Night

of the Phoenix. It is also the original airdate

of this show. All right. Let's get into today's

episodes. We'll be looking at three more from

Knight Rider 2008 after this. Are you awake?

Now what's up? New mission files are being uploaded.

My biosensing matrix indicates you are still

fatigued from our previous assignment. Need a

biosensing matrix to figure that out? If you

like, I could display the files inside the car.

That's okay. I'll get out of here. It will be

morning soon. Will you have enough time to fully

prepare? Kit, I can handle it. But you do remember

that tomorrow night is... Yeah, I know. Will

Sarah not be upset? Probably. I have confirmed

the item's location. Putting it on screen now.

That's our boy. Stay on him. Where's Dr. Grimm?

DC. Before. Oh, that's right. He didn't tell

me. Really? Sarah go too? Sarah's not picking

up her dress. Right, today's the - Oh man, she's

gonna be - Guys, this man courage stolen NSA

intelligence to North Korea. Smuggled Ali Atwa

out of Afghanistan, delivered weapons to African

rebels. This is our chance to grab him. Focus.

Alright, first up today is a hard day's night.

Mike is injected with a neural poison and has

less than three hours to live unless the Css

needs a billionaire tech mogul in order to procure

the antidote done done done Did senior ever go

through any of it I don't remember senior ever

being poisoned I do What episode was it was oh

I'd have to look now damn it you'd ask me but

it was when Michael senior was injected with

Poison from a flower. Oh That's right Wasn't

that the Halloween episode? No, no, no, no Oh

What the hell's the name of that episode ah And

I can usually pull it from memory and I can't

now But... You're too damn old, apparently. Well,

so are you. But it was when, you know, Michael

Sr.'s investigating the flowers, and he discovers

that, you know, along with Kit, that there's

a deep, dark secret, a secret of death. Yes,

yes. Okay, I'm remembering that now, but yeah.

The plot, I like it. It's cool. It's interesting.

They basically pull a mission impossible with

the mask thing. Yeah, that's kind of and I love

how Mike just points out I hate these masks I

thought Again if you really want to Analyze it

it's it's your standard villain for hire poses

an assassin type of plot. It's it's very so it's

nothing we haven't seen before but because again

like like two weeks ago when I was talking in

episode 44 about Elise care about the main character

these characters make these because these characters

actually know how to act yeah they just don't

get in front of a camera and then just yeah it

makes it so much better yeah really does yeah

Very, very cool. Any other thoughts on the plot

for A Hard Day's Night? There really aren't any.

It's just the fact that I like kind of the ending,

in a sense. I don't like the fact that Michael's

heart stops, but I like the fact that he tries

to at least tell Sari before he goes. That he

loves her. He loves her. And then she has to

basically save his life. I love that she smacks

him like twice. Wake up! Wake up! So awesome.

Alright, we're gonna get the miscanters after

this. You almost got the drop on you. Almost

only count some horseshoes and hand grenades.

Any idea who crashed our party? Homeland Security,

we're debriefing them right now. If you wanna

throw them a bomb. We know you have another job

today. We need to know the details. Not happening.

Read this. Not happening. Ooh, I love this part.

Michael, last time this subject regurgitated

all over my console. Yeah, and I got stuck cleaning

it up. Last chance. What are you gonna do? Kit,

auto restraints. Hit it. Occupant restraint system

active. May I? Thank you. hey what are you doing

all right let me out of here get me out of here

and i won't come after you the subject appears

to be moments away from regurgitation i am so

not cleaning it up again all right let's turn

the scanners on dun dun dun i love this show

i really I really love this show. Anyone who

has watched this show with a grain of salt or

in passing, stop what you're doing, stop this

podcast, go back to the beginning, watch the

show, pay the fuck attention. Because Kit is

now a wrestler. Kit is Booker T. Kit is Booker

T, the spinneroonie done by Kit. That was amazing.

Oh, that was cool. Awesome. ZOE is one of the

best side characters ever in KR history. She

is lovable, funny, interesting, she's badass,

she's just an awesome side character. Yeah, if

I was Mike my heart had stopped too after that

scene Sarah in that dress Wasn't one of those

bridesmaids dresses that has shoulder pads from

here to Albuquerque. Yeah Yeah, it was actually

a decent dress yeah, yeah, I absolutely love

the tech in the advanced vocal disguise cuz I've

seen these these these vocal stuff before and

Mission Impossible and stuff and most of the

time Ethan Hunt would just hide it under he would

put it on his Adam's apple, but it would just

be hidden under the His mask right in this in

this Mike puts it on it disappears into it doesn't

disappear into his skin, but it becomes a like

it camouflaged auto camouflages itself to To

be part of his skin and Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes kit

as a cop car. So Now if you think about this

if you really think about this how many times

to 2000 Imitate the police without actually looking

like the police several. Yeah several. So that's

that this is a nice little update The whole time

I was watching this and after that episode after

that that moment in the episode I wrote down

I know I know you're going to give me flack for

this, but this is what the original series should

have been like. Not necessarily this technology,

but this overall feel and continuity, and I know

television was different back then. Right, right.

But everything about all of these characters

is great. The scenes between Mike and Sarah are

heartwarmingly crushing and super emotional.

I absolutely love them. And the last one I had

was the grappling hook. Yes. Brought a classic

back What did you like about this one the whole

thing really I mean, you know it was they brought

back the grappling hook and They you know, I

think they kind of in a way, you know, you don't

you see you see the grappling hook do a lot more

I think Than you did in the classic. I mean,

I think was what the plot the grappling hook

was For one season or couple I think grappling

hook was was there from the moment It was installed

until the end but it was only like usually if

Michael was stuck on a cliff or or if some villain

was stuck on a cliff Yeah, then they would use

the grappling hook then they would use the grappling

hook Here in this series. They use it for some

great. Oh, yeah awesome stuff We will get to

the awesome stuff a lot later in the podcast

episodes, but yeah, this is very, very, very

cool. So yeah, Scanner's Off. There's only one

little nitpick for me in this one. And it's kind

of a funny nitpick, but I said, boo, when the

girl took his picture, when the girl found him

out that he was following her and she took his

picture. Yeah. Michael says kit and then kit

says I'm on my way. I was hoping for kit. I need

you buddy. Yeah Because that would have been

an awesome nod to the classic right there Yeah,

it would have been it really would have been

Anything else you may have not have liked about

this one. No, I Really didn't have anything All

right, let's move on to the Next episode for

today after this. The SSC has requested we review

your cover identity together. Okay. Covers Jack

Miller, Newbury, Kansas, Marine Corps, Special

Forces. I assaulted my CO, skipped my court martial,

currently listed as AWOL. Happy? I have a question,

Michael. Why would a soldier assault his own

commanding officer? War can make a man do all

kinds of things he can't explain. Kind of like

women. Don't listen to him, Kit. He may know

war, but what he thinks he knows about women

is far more dangerous. Kit, run the algorithm

on the new Transform system. Let's make sure

it's clear. Commencing algorithmic preview. You

gotta say, the whole Brainiac gearhead thing

is very hot. Next is Knight of the Hunter. Kit

disguises as a 4x4 for an off -road mission as

Mike infiltrates a right -wing militia group

that is plotting to blow up a dam. Along the

way, he encounters a British secret agent posing

as one of them. I What I've noticed about this

series and where five episodes in I Love how

well the beginning intro scene the the prequel

to the main story Begins before the theme is

used right what I love about it is how well they

end that scene and let the the title Song and

cards and images to pop up I like I I remember

when I found a really decent version of this

theme when it first came out I found it on the

internet somebody had it in really good quality

at the time And I just kept playing it over and

over and over again Anybody says To me, it's

an updated version of the old theme and it's

a version for this style of show. And it's just

it's so great. I love this theme. Did you have

anything that you want to say about the plot?

It was it was actually interesting to see knowing

that we know that Michael is scared of water.

Getting kind of drowned in it. When the when

the lady. finds, you know, finds out, you know,

cause she, she's supposed to be this Texan voice

sounding individual. I think she was Australian.

Right, right, right, right. But the way she was

posing, um, she made her voice sound like it

was from the south, from the south. And, you

know, eventually they started working together.

Yeah on that and it was it was very awesome to

see it was it was neat to see those two working

together and One of the other things I liked

was kit prefer to scream like a little girl No,

he told her okay kit and then he said he said

to her prepare to scream like a little girl and

she was like Scream like a lot. Yeah. Yeah, it

was very funny Very cool. All right, we're gonna

get to the scanners after this Told you about

dropping that lead hand, who are you really?

Jack Miller 232nd Zulu give it a rest Jack who

sent you NSA FBI My name's Cassandra Banks. MI6.

We've been tracking Cooperton for over a year.

MI6? What, like License to Kill, 00 Status, Inter

-Majesty Secret Service, that MI6? What am I

supposed to call you, Jane Bond? Sure, if I can

call you G .I. Jackass. If you're in my six,

how come my people don't know you're here? We're

supposed to ring them up and wait for someone

like you to stumble in a few days before our

target is about to attack. He's going in the

next few days? Best guess. Cooperton has acquired

a massive conventional weapon, a modified smaller

scale Moab. It's quite the little prize. What's

he planning on doing with it? It's a demolitions

bomb. I would venture he's planning to knock

something down. Brilliantly deduced the target.

I don't know. All right, turning the scanners

on. This feels like a few of the infiltration

missions from the old series and I love all the

sneaking around now This felt like a combination

of the episode where he had to go Behind where

Mike senior had to go behind the scenes of the

Colonel's army Deadly maneuver. Yep. No, no,

no, not deadly move. No, no, no Don't remember

anyway one of those one of those episodes and

it also felt like One of my favorites a plush

ride around all that stuff. So I really love

that What I love about kids technology is the

like he's that damaged he can shut himself down

an automatic chip replacement That's freakin

awesome. Yeah, whereas the 2000 didn't have that

you had to bring him into the shop Yeah, I mean,

yes, he had remote capabilities, but they were

limited. Yeah, they were they were limited so

Scream like a what? I had to rewind that several

times scream like a lot Yeah, get behind the

truck get on kids hood jump it's just like the

original series Just like the original and that

closing song I got like Mustang Sally I Will

say this for this series it has some strange

music in certain places but in places where like

that that scene that that song really Really

hit home, and it was like oh wow really really

awesome Would you like about this one um the

fact that Michael Knight Jr. can actually work

with people. I know that in the beginning, I

think that he probably wanted to work alone like

his father did. But he had to just, he worked

together. He was able to work together with a

team. And that was the difference between senior

and junior. Junior has had some partners. This

in this episode alone. I think this is kind of

the first partner outside of flag That you saw.

Oh, yeah. Oh So I did like that I Also did like

the fact that you know, even though he was starting

to fall in love with this woman He was like,

you know, we can't do this. I have someone that

you know, she asks will you have someone and

he says yeah and You know, he realizes that he

still has Sarah Yeah, and you know the the feelings

are still there so that in a way Well, it's not

necessarily a nod to this to the classic series

even though There was some sexual tension between

Bonnie and Michael in the original. I think I

think there might be a little bit of it between

Sarah and Mike here Yeah, but they're they're

It's one of those things of will they won't they

it really is I mean it's and they are they already

have in the past but You know like like in the

very first episode a night of shining our in

night of shining armor when he said I'm Michael

Knight Well, you know, you know, let's start

over and they kind of go from there But you see

some of the feelings come through as the as these

episodes Move along right? As for scanners off,

I didn't really find anything I didn't either

I didn't, again, very enjoyable. Like I said

two weeks ago and I said earlier today, sure,

if you want to really break down the plot of,

oh, it's your standard episode of weapons and

somebody's gonna blow up this or somebody's gonna

blow up that, it's still, there wasn't anything

that severely pissed me off like almost everything

in Team Knight Rider did. Well, there wasn't

a villain of the week. Yeah, they're really you

know, I haven't noticed any villain of the week

plots anywhere Yep All right, we're gonna move

on to the final episode after this Come on, Captain

Jack Harkness. Torchwood, Doctor Who, nothing.

Isn't Captain Jack gay? He's not gay, he's bi.

Or, omni -sexual, if you prefer. Save the cheerleader,

save the world. Save some for me. Nice pump -ups.

Captain Jack Harkness, you trying to tell us

something, Billy? What are you looking at? Hate

to break the news to you, Lisa, but you and Katie

look nothing like the Pixar lamp. That's just

mean. I think you guys look great. What? Now

you're mocking me. Encrypted message coming through.

Who's it from? Decrypting now. CIA. It's a video

message from an operator. It's faint and degraded

like it's being blocked. Reset the frequency.

Yeah, it's the image working on it so I give

him put it up on all screens Whoa, this thing

is live Billy boost the signal Verify this looks

real Where is he? Don't have a location. What

about a locator beacon? Doesn't appear to be

on. Why the hell wouldn't he have it activated?

Maybe he can't. Try a remote trigger. Nothing.

Zoe, give me the CIA. I'm losing the signal.

Hang on to it. I'm trying. The CIA put me on

hold. What did he say? Code name Sawin. Cross

check that code name. Let's identify exactly

what this is. No match on the code names. Run

anagrams. Running anagrams. Crap! Somebody's

jamming his signal. He's giving coordinates.

Happy Halloween! Aren't you going to rip him

a new one for that? Actually, I thought it was

pretty funny. You need to learn to loosen up,

Sarah. It's Halloween. I gotta loosen up? This

from the man that never smiles? I'll see you

at the Halloween party. And good job on the mission.

Nice work, both of you. Hey guys, we're gonna

try to climb above this storm, see if we can

get some smoother air. And finally, I'm saying

we have Night of the Living Dead. Dun dun dun!

A murderous hacker infiltrates the night headquarters

and activates a self -destruct program hidden

inside Kit. Meanwhile, Mike and Sarah have 30

minutes to relay Kit's software to the backup

system while the others rush to find a killer

among them. Note this episode reveals the schematics

of a reimagined car as a returning nemesis. Very

cool. This was done. This was done very, you

know, this was, this was no tongue -in -cheek

episode. Oh no. This is really where the, the,

the continuity picks up and really shows you,

hey look, you know, um, and it puts such a despicable

twist on car. Yeah it does. Like, I mean, you

never... I would have never... and we'll get

to this down the line. I don't want to... I don't

want to... You don't want to spend too much time

on it. Yeah, I don't want to spoil it right away,

but... It just... You never expect what this

new version of car is all about, and holy crap,

is it awesome. So, um... With that note, I'll

also say if you can find it, go YouTube the behind

the scene footage of what they did for that particular

scene. Okay, cool. Cool. Even though I've grown

out of Halloween, even I can admit this was a

damn good Halloween. Yeah, it was. Like, this

is how to do a Halloween episode. That other

thing Halloween night years ago. Yeah new Any

Any thoughts on the overall plot? No, not really.

No. I mean, it's a good episode You don't have

what and when I first watched this I thought

oh here we go two plots in one, but it's really

not They stick with the same plot. It's just

separated It's two different locations. Yeah,

it's just separated. It's still the same plot

two locations and I'm like, okay, I can see this

You know, I can see this so it's not bad. It's

not gonna make you want to turn this off Or go

to the next episode or whatever the case may

be Yeah, um, it was done very well this like

I said, this was no tongue -in -cheek episode

So, if you guys are expecting tongue -in -cheek

in Knight Rider 2008, prepare to be very disappointed.

Oh, yeah. We're gonna hit the scanners after

this. How long have you been planning this? Months.

What are you, 12? Michael, I do not understand

the immense personal pleasure you find in frightening

your friends. You're supposed to scare each other

on Halloween. Nor do I understand the lengths

to which you are willing to go to achieve your

goal. It's called trick -or -treat. But you did

not give them the option of treat. That's because

I like trick better Halloween's his favorite

holiday kid. It's always been what is your favorite

holiday Sarah? I like fourth of July fireworks

and Thanksgiving for the food But I love Christmas

because of the presents you like getting presents.

I have one for you It looks stupid no Sarah you

do not What? I'm so not opening that. It's probably

full of spiders or something. It's a present,

Sarah. Okay, I'll open it. It reminded me of

trick -or -treating with you when we were kids.

That's why Halloween was always my favorite holiday.

Because you were there. Alright, let's turn the

scanners on. Mike's prank I love that and it

goes to show you He did the prank he then went

and showed them how he did it So it's kind of

like what television is nowadays where where

they do the analysis of a scene I really thought

that was great and um When Charles came in I

was like hey look thing it's thing from Adams

family I love the continuity with the Graemons

and Mike. Very awesome. This isn't just bringing

one man in and giving him a new life. These people

have history with him. Mike and Sarah grew up

together. I love all of that. And I really also

love about this specific episode how mysterious

it is. I thought that was great. Right. Again

the the emotion between Michael Sarah and kit

is great on the plane I Love Michael trying to

talk kit. Oh, you should have been a vampire,

but we get a convertible kit Only time when he's

in this Halloween disguise, I think this is the

only time that we really get a convertible kit

for the Mustang here, but After a while, I just

ended up watching this one. It was very, very

enjoyable. And it was a great ending. I thought

that was really cool. The thing I liked about

the whole thing, like you said, it gives a different

approach to Knight Rider, whereas in the original

series, it was one man, one car. It still is.

Yeah. But like you said, the Greyman's, you know,

Sarah and Mike grew up together. You know. They

now work together. Sarah and Mike are, you know,

their sexual tension is slowly decreasing by

each episode. I think, well, either way, I mean,

it could increase or decrease depending on the

episode, but there are times sometimes where

Sarah, and we'll talk about this later, does

understand. You know, you know does understand

Mike. Um, I like that because in the classic

series well when we talked about Whitebird with

Katherine Hicklin and and David Bonnie really

kind of got a chance to understand Michael Yeah,

so, you know you fast forward 25 years later

and it's almost the same premise again You know

in some episodes Yeah, yeah, it's very very awesome

once again, you know this episode. It's not your

standard villain the week No, it's not your standard

arms plot. It could be considered your standard

inside mole type of plot, but they may like For

a while I was thinking oh, it's got to be Zoe

because she kept saying oh Well, you got to open

the doors and you got to do this and you got

to do that and blah blah blah And then I'm thinking

okay. Well, it's Carrie. It's this it's that

and I guess I should have kind of guessed it

was Zoe the whole time when she kissed Billy

cuz Zoe apparently would never kiss Billy she'd

rather smack him upside the head You knew that

Zoe and Billy kind of had that dorky chemistry

You know, she would get really psyched up and

then nothing let it down really hard. Yeah So

when you see this other Zoe You know actually

You know actually, you know and and he knows

it's happening she he doesn't pick up on it Yeah,

you know cuz she says near the end. I can't believe

you thought she was me And it was hard to really

tell I even it was hard because think about it,

you know, you know, obviously it was a voice

-over dub Yeah, it was a voice -over dub and

it was somebody playing You know her You know,

it was someone else. So, you know, and then she

dies right there in the in the flag headquarters,

I think If I remember right Yeah, yeah Carrie

shoots her Very very awesome episode again. We're

six episodes in and Six episodes in we're building

on the continuity now, and it's just so great

So far all of these episodes have been awesome

Yeah, I mean really great Pulling in continuity

when they can pulling in Mike's story when they

can at the same time being fresh Absolutely loved

it. I have no scanners off. I don't I don't either

So we're gonna take a quick break and we'll come

back with final thoughts and ratings after this

Hey everyone, this is the music man 08 one of

you've got a wide cramp stone? Let's check under

the hood. Oh, a little aggression. Nice. That's

what I'm talking about. So come on. Now hit me.

I'm not gonna hit a girl. Oh, really? I'm not

saying you're gonna hit me. I'm saying take your

best shot, bitch. Rule one. If you're gonna make

the first move, make a count. You see an opening?

Take it hard Let's do it again All right, we

are back and for these three episodes today We

gotta rate them hard days night. What do you

give it? I give it a five Yeah, I gotta go there

as well. I gotta give it a five as well. I mean

they're Sure, my little nitpick about not saying

kid. I need you but that's just me being a fan.

Yeah I mean, this is not really anything to take

off the episode. I really enjoyed it. What about

Night of the Hunter? What are you going to give

that one? Ooh. That's, you know, I have to give

it a five. I really do. I have to give this one

a five. Very good storyline. Very, you know,

very good storyline plot. Everything is on the

edge of your seat. Fast paced. There are no boring

moments. I mean, like you said, we're six episodes

in. Yeah, and They keep the action in they keep

the hard edginess of the show together and I

like that So I have to give this one a five I'm

the same way. I mean, I agree with everything

you said so I'll give it a five as well It was

really really an awesome episode night of the

living dead I have to give it a five Triple fives

this week folks. We have a sextuplet five Yeah,

I mean there's nothing wrong with it there's

no real plot holes no You know just stellar right

no villains of the week you notice that and any

of the I mean We've only like I said we're only

six in but there's no villain of the week Yeah

Which is kind of nice. Yes, very nice Alright,
