About this Episode

This episode covers the two-hour series premiere 'Knight of the Phoenix' and the follow-up episode 'Deadly Maneuvers'. The discussion examines the origin story of Michael Knight and KITT, the production choice to dub David Hasselhoff's voice over another actor during the pilot, and the introduction of Bonnie Barstow. The hosts analyze the plot holes, the comedic rapport between the lead characters, and the inconsistent logic behind the FLAG expense reports. They also critique the pacing of the pilot's streaming versions and the underwhelming narrative quality of the second episode.

Bank Rider, a shadowy flight into the dangerous

world of a man who does not exist. the innocent,

the helpless, the powerless in a world of criminals

who operate above the law. Welcome to Beyond

the Night, brought to you by the GCRN and Audible

.com. I am one of your hosts, Steve, Joe, and

Mike, and joining me is Dion. The Music Man.

Yes, Dion the Music Man. Yes. We are finally

starting. It is, as of this recording, it is

the 30th anniversary of Knight Rider. This will

air September 26, 2012. September 26th was the

original air date of Knight of the Phoenix. Today

we're gonna be going beyond the night and reviewing

the first three episodes because we count Night

of the Phoenix is a two -part two -hour episode

So it's not two individual parts. It's one whole

story from Knight Rider Classic season one So

what what have you been up to since we recorded

that episode zero so long ago? Oh back in the

days Not really Much, actually. I've been trying

to see if there's been some interesting KR news,

but there really isn't. Not a whole lot has been

going on, per se. Yeah. You know, just keeping

busy, I guess you'd say. Yeah. Yeah, and we're

probably not going to do too many of these where

we have general chat in the intro, but I figured

since it was the first episode, we might as well

do some stuff here. Yeah, no, this is so not

a news podcast. It's just not no it isn't here

that would that would take too long for us to

gather Well, it wouldn't take too long for us

to gather, you know I mean if there's tumbleweeds

rolling by websites for Knight Rider news, that

means there is no news That's why it amazes me

some podcasts and in other fandoms can continually

be a weekly podcast when there's like Hardly

anything going no. Yeah, no news whatsoever.

So As I said, we're here to review Knight Rider

Classic and all the other Knight Rider shows

that have happened since then. So Kit hit the

turbo boost and we'll be on with the show. Does

it strike you that there's an uncanny resemblance

between this young fellow and you as a young

man? My imagination, I suppose. It's strictly

a task. When will I see it? I've been trying

to tell you. Could be ready within the month.

Excellent. Aren't you pushing it a bit, Michael?

I gotta get back in shape real fast. I got one

last debt to pay. Is revenge the only thing you

can think of? You're better than that. You were

a good cop. Was I? As I recall, I blew it. What

if I were to offer you another shot? I want Tanya

and her friends, too. But that's only the tip

of the iceberg. Now, if we were to work together...

Mr. Knight, my last partner is dead. Nothing

personal, but from now on, I work alone. I can't

take responsibility for anybody's life but my

own. I think you can understand that. It isn't

polite to sneak around uninvited. Be gracious,

Devin. I think your explanation is well overdue.

Damn right it is. What is all this? What are

you guys up to, people sneaking in and out of

here at all hours of the day and night? Look

who's talking. Well, be quiet, both of you. Let's

get down to business. I'm running out of time.

That my guilt here is now healthy enough to carry

on. Carry on what? I don't know what you people

do out here, but I just want to get on with my

life. That's not very grateful. Aren't you the

least bit angry at the people who left you to

die? Angry? Angry doesn't even come close. But

I'm gonna adjust, you know why? Tell me. Because

they're too big. The kind of criminals that operate

above the law, nobody can touch them. I don't

agree with you. Well, you weren't trying to do

your opinion. As for me, I'm pulling out of here

tonight, and I, uh... I'm taking my car with

me. Prepare the car for him. A great deal. He'll

have to know about it before it's safe for him

to drive. I must go to bed. I'm not, uh... You've

just struck a dying man. Hey, listen, I like

that old man. I really do. But, Devin, I gotta

get on with my own life. You wouldn't have a

life if we hadn't brought you here. Remember,

there are still people who will kill you if they

find out you're alive. But I'm legally dead,

remember? Devin, I don't even know me with this

face. Now, what's all this about my car? The

resemblance between that car and your own is

purely superficial. What are you talking about?

Devon, that's my car. I left it out in the desert.

No, it may look like your car, but in actuality,

this vehicle is probably the most expensive car

in the world. Come on, this is my car. It's this

new paint job. It feels like baby skin. Boy,

those guys did a nice job. There's not a rickle

on it. Like a mirror. It's not paint. It's a

finish bonded into the molecular structure of

a new substance. You mean the metal? It's not

metal. And it's not fiberglass. Excuse me. Here.

Strike the surface as hard as you can. Come on,

Devon. I'm not gonna hit my car. It's beautiful.

There's not a mark on it. How did you do that?

Don't just stand there with your mouth open and

get in the car. I'll show you. Alright, and first

up, we are gonna just let everybody know how

this is gonna flow. If you have ever listened

to our M .A .S .K. podcast, M .A .S .K. Mayhem,

we have that segmented into three sections. Plot,

Highlights, and Lowlights. So for the plot, for

the pilot of Knight Rider, also known as Knight

of the Phoenix, Michael Long, a policeman is

shot and left for dead. The shot is deflected

by a plate in his head. but ruins his face. He

is saved and his face reconstructed. He is reluctant

but agrees to use kits to help the Foundation

for Law and Government. Essentially in the plot

what happens is you have someone who is not David

Hasselhoff but has his voice. We'll get to that

later. But you have Michael Long who is an undercover

policeman with his partner Muncie. They are trying

to capture these criminals who are stealing secrets,

stealing microchips and all kinds of top government

secrets. And what really happens here is that

come to find out the woman who is behind it all,

Tanya Walker, Tanya whatever the hell her name

is, I forget what her name is. That's right.

Yeah, that's what I figured. That's right. Wow,

she a long long lost ex -wife No, not in this

day and age So come to find out that she is she

is the boss They try to catch her her operative

Lonnie taking pictures of microchips and information

and everything else. And we've got, is it Colonel

Decker? God, what was his name in the A team?

You got Lancelot Gault as starring as one of

the security guards who actually shoots Muncie.

And Michael reveals himself to be a undercover

police officer to Tanya as they get into a black

Trans Am. And race is off to meet with Wilson

the head of security and and Lonnie out in the

desert and that's when we find out where Tanya

is the brains behind it all and she shoots Michael

in the head and I wouldn't marry a woman that

scandalous. I just want to point that out Anyway

For eighty standards, she was hot though. I give

her that. I will give her that. For eighty standards.

Yes. Most definitely. She was number one on the

hot list. Yes. So Michael gets shot in the face.

He's left for dead in the desert. You have these

strange people coming up to him. One a shorter

man says, I hope it's not too late, and a taller

man who... Who is very reluctant in the shorter

man's? Objective with with Michael Long, but

they save him they have him reconstruct his face

reconstructed in the image of what the older

man used to look like the older man is a Wilton

night played by a Richard bass heart and the

taller man is Devin miles who was played by Edward

Mulhair They are you know watching Michael get

better and they see the band just come off and

It looks and talks and acts like David Hasselhoff

The whole point in these scenes here is that

Wilton is trying to impart on him that one man

can make a difference and You know Wilton's trying

to say to him, you know his revenge all you can

think about I know you're mad, but let's put

these people behind bars, let's put them where

they belong versus getting revenge and killing

them. As we progress through the episode, you've

got Michael not necessarily breaking in, but

there's been whispers between Devin and Wilton

about the night 2000, of course. you know us

as fans know what the hell it is but for a first

time viewer you may not know what it is and whatever

else and Wilton's like no don't tell me about

it now you've got a month and blah blah blah

so Michael eventually comes in there and the

car we find out it is a car it's not an alien

spaceship like a couple episodes from now Yes,

Earthling. I've come to take you away. So Michael,

you know, is in the garage and Devin's like,

oh, it's not polite to be sneaking around. He's

like, sneaking around? You're the one that's

had people coming in here 24 hours a day, seven

days a week the last six months or however, last

month or however long it's been. I'm doing God

knows what. And we meet, well we kind of meet

Kit, but we meet the body that is Kit. And Devin's

like, go ahead, strike the service. Come on,

Devin, I'm not going to hit my car. Whack! Oh,

that was funny. That was priceless. Yeah, I love

that. I love that. That was priceless. He's like,

how'd you do that? How'd you do that? There's

not even a ripple on it. And Devin's just like,

don't just stand there with your mouth open,

get in the car. Exactly. I'll show you. Welcome

aboard the Knight 2000. Thank you, thank you.

What's all this? Looks like Darth Vader's bathroom.

Long and short of the plot here is that Wilton

passes away because we know that he's not in

great health. He passes away. He leaves this

legacy to Michael if Michael chooses to use it.

New ID, new credit cards, new this, new that.

New passports, everything. Yeah, new passports,

all that good stuff. And Michael goes after Tanya

and her friends, and he meets up with, oh God,

what is her name? Crab, what's the chick's name

that he meets up with? Maggie? Yeah. I couldn't

remember. Becky and her son Buddy. Maggie and

her son Buddy. Oh, Maggie, not Maggie. It's Maggie.

Jesus Christ. You're screwing me up over there.

Well, I'm not. Yes, you are. It's all your damn

fault. He meets up with Maggie, who initially

thinks that he is a friend of Tanya's and spills

a drink on him, meets up with her son Buddy and...

He enters his his brand new most expensive car

in the world into this demolition derby Of course,

he's the only car that comes out of it without

a scratch on it Buddy is hiding in the back seat

and throughout this whole derby is so hilarious

because buddy just keeps pressing like everybody

I don't care who you are any male child in the

80s watching this show Wanted to be that kid

in that passenger seat president. Absolutely

You know, that's just too funny. Yeah. Yeah,

you know you get the oil slick You got the smoke

screen you got this you got that you got the

But the turbo boost it wasn't really called They

didn't I I know kit had the button in the pilot

they used it they didn't use it they they did

it to where it was They made it look like he

could jump over. Yeah. Yeah it it would they

didn't actually use the turbo boost now but you

know if it's got that it's got this is uh...

again another power that doesn't have a button

yet that's got ski mode where he's he's driving

between two cars very very awesome it climaxes

in uh... the point of you know that you know

tanya finding out oh it's it's michael long blah

blah blah uh... and a whole race ensues as far

as that goes and they end up back at the Comtron

headquarters and he tries to Michael ends up

getting shot in the left shoulder and shot in

the left shoulder and tries to wear a guards

uniform of course that doesn't work and there's

this whole scene with one of the security guards

he's like Better not look behind you. There's

nobody back there for miles. I looked I checked.

What about the car? There's nobody in there either

Dun dun dun That scene was funny. Yeah It was

very funny and then you got the chase to the

To the airport and you know the all the trucks

trying to stop him and that's really where They'll

play the turbo boost I'm not sure if Did he use

the button? I think he did no no didn't no I

could have sworn he did no I Don't know I I could

have sworn he did but anyway So they have the

chase the airport and at the airport it all comes

to a head where Tanya's like Oh, I'll find us

a way out of here that no one can stop and she

thinks she's gonna steal kit right dumb bitch

what you get um she's like oh out of there michael

oh boy he's like tanya no don't the windows are

bang and the bullet ricochets off kids window

and and kills her dying yeah everybody else ends

up going to jail or wherever the hell they went

and uh plot ends with uh devon and uh michael

on a plane you know toasting to one man's dream

and to their future and everything else. What

did you think of the plot? I think the plot was

interesting. I especially liked the comic relief.

Yes. Oh, I didn't even mention the other part

of the comic relief. Throughout the whole plot,

throughout the whole two hours, you got these

two guys trying to steal stuff. That was quite

funny. And they eventually do because Michael

left a frickin door open with the keys in the

ignition and kit takes over They're driving him

at first and then it takes over. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah kit takes over and drives them to the police

station But no the humor in this is just amazing.

That's great. Yeah, you also see for the first

time Well in the comic relief you do the left

eject button Yep Left and right actually you

see them both. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah Yeah, you see

them both because the two crooks are in there,

right? The reason why in the plot that I mentioned

about when Michael got shot in his left shoulder

There's actually a flub when he gets in the car.

He's holding his right shoulder. That's a bit

of a bug. Yeah But that's all right. I thought

this was a great plot. I thought it was a nice

origin story. Devin even makes a comment of,

oh, do you notice that there's a resemblance

between this young man and yourself when you

were a younger man? And of course, Wilton just

looks at him like... Stick to your task. Yeah.

Yeah. No, I think this is a great opening it

shows us what who Michael Long was he was a really

good undercover cop And then it shows us, you

know how that's gonna transition it into being

Michael Knight Overall it was just an amazing

two -hour episode story It's amazing that they

were able to fit everything into two hours. I

think to that on the DVD box set There's a scene

we didn't see when it first premiered. There

was an extra scene that was added. I remember

seeing, obviously, the TV version and then the

DVD version. There was one scene I didn't see

that was in the TV version and I thought, I don't

remember that at all. Which scene was it? It

had been when Kit was actually being towed. Oh,

yeah. We didn't see that. No. We didn't see that

one. No, but yeah, I think that's a DVD actually.

I think it's like a deleted scene or something

like that. It was. Yeah, because I mean, there's

no... Yeah, because in the episode, it just jumps

from Michael being in jail and Kit being impounded.

It doesn't show them... It shows them taking

Michael away, but it doesn't show them taking

Kit away. Yeah, and I don't think it shows them

trying to get into the car No, it doesn't it

just Magically him appears in the impound lot.

So yeah Yeah You got anything else for the plot?

I don't really like I said that you know if I

do It'll be covered in the highlights and lowlights

when we get to that Welcome aboard the night

2000. Thank you. What's all this? Looks like

Darth Vader's bathroom. It is a one -of -a -kind

car, Mr. Long. It is the fastest, safest, strongest

car in the world. It is also completely fuel

-efficient and is operated entirely by microprocessors,

which make it virtually impossible for it to

be involved in any kind of mishap or collision.

Unless, of course, specifically so ordered by

its pilot. Pilot? Don't tell me this thing flies.

No. But it thinks. It thinks? My car thinks?

We like to think of it as our car. Now, in order

to motivate it forward, I recognize the more

rudimentary controls such as the accelerator,

Devin. I do know how to drive. I would have preferred

you to have let me open the door first. However,

as you see, no harm has come to the car. You

also told me this machine couldn't have a collision,

and not if the system is operable. And to do

that, you have to switch it on first. Like that.

Now, you're telling me I can't hit anything.

Trust me. I'll never trust anybody again. So

let's turn our scanners on. I think scanners

on is what the highlights are going to be since

Kid always uses a bunch of scanners. I don't

know, just some little quirky thing for Night

Rider's sake. Makes perfect sense. Yes, so scanners

on here. For me, for the scanners being on, I've

got a ton of highlights. Holy crap. Well, I didn't

realize I wrote down so much stuff. I like how

there are so many parallels in the pilot. Michael

Long has Muncie, and then later in the series,

Michael Knight has RC3. Did you ever notice that?

No! You know, I didn't even think of that. He's

paired with a black partner in the beginning,

and then later on in the series, in Season 4,

he's paired with another black partner. That's

kind of cool. His actual Trans Am looks like

Kit, but obviously it isn't Kit. It's just the

general production model for the Pontiac. I do

love the test runs. I thought that was amazing.

Just showing what Kit can do. And the driving

scenes, they're just amazingly shot. I've always

loved, you know, no matter how much I can pick

this series apart, I've always loved the just

having kit in the weirdest driving locations.

Even if it's a big city or even if it's in the

middle of the desert, that car stands out. It

does stand out, but I think it's because of the

scanner. Yeah, that's true. Deafness is always

good when confronted by law enforcement. I'd

like to get a divorce from you. Well in that

case I want custody of me I said I said it before

I think we all wanted to be buddy sitting in

and everybody wanted him every kid wanted a Wanted

to be in that seat and the demolition derby that

was pretty damn cool. I really like that scene

was neat. That was very good I love the bar scene

where Michael's like, I gotta warn you guys,

I'm heavily trained in martial arts and they

all laugh at him. Next thing you know, they're

all flopping out the door. When he's like, Tonya,

meet me here at 8 o 'clock. And instead of Tonya

showing up, it's all the other guys. Yeah, it's

the drivers. They thought twice. Oh, yeah. uh...

they've got twice about going up against them

uh... it was uh... uh... what the hell was it

it was uh... what the hell i write that note

down for jesus christ i'm getting told for this

shit uh... uh... kit uh... i love this kit broke

out and then he breaks michael out of jail yeah

that was neat uh... you know i already mentioned

about what you know what you know what about

the car there's no one in there i already looked

i love the end chase scene and i love what i

love about this series in general is that i love

catching where they get the intro scenes from

because in the pilot with that helicopter that's

in the the opening credits of the show yes it

is And I always like catching to see where an

opening credits sequence would be in the actual

show. I really enjoyed that. That was very neat.

And of course you have to love the snarky banter

between Kit and Michael. It's just so amazing.

For a car and a human, I thought they made a

very good comedic team. Yes, very much so. So

what are your what are your highlights for turning

your scanners on my highlights would be the fact

that you know That I think one of the highlights

were just the two the two comedy scenes where

the thieves You know the first scene, you know,

they break they try to break into the car and

they can't Yeah I just, I can't, I can't stop

watching that scene. I don't know why that just

for this one. This is pretty funny. And then

the second is, you know, the second one is when,

um, uh, the second, you know, the second comedy

scene where they actually get into kit, they

steal it. And then you see kit driving them back,

you know, and it's funny. And then of course,

the other thing I like is the fact that, um,

Kit is actually scolding a human. Yeah, I Just

thought that was awesome. It's like okay a car,

you know a car scolding a human. That's a first

Yeah, so That was just yeah, that was just awesome

any other highlights Good plot, you know good

original story Yeah, that's really you know life.

We've covered all that so I guess there's really

not much there to really say other than that

She's working in a place called Silicon Valley.

All right, if Tanya's in Silicon Valley, that's

where I'm going right now. I forbid it Tell me

you can't forbid it. I can certainly take away

the car. I'll get another one Besides it's in

my name. That's where you're wrong Michael Long

is dead, remember that. How do I suddenly become

Michael Knight? Yes, well... Driver's license,

credit cards. It's all on Mr. Knight's orders.

These are good now. Could have dated these ahead

if you wanted me to stay here. You knew I'd leave

when I wanted to. You're a primitive, Mr. Knight.

You're quite predictable. You think your old

man was pretty smart, don't you? A certifiable

genius. He must have known what he was doing

when he picked me to get a little revenge for

him. I'm on my way. Well, just a minute, sir.

There are several things about this car that

I ought to explain. That's all right. I'm a fast

study. I'll pick things up as I go along. Look,

that's very foolhardy. Goodbye. Thank you. Oh,

and I want you to know something. I kind of got

to like you. What never mind what's that mean

coming from a primitive anyway? Wilton He's doing

everything you said he would What have you gotten

me into? Now we are gonna turn our scanners off.

I only have two lowlights You know, you had mentioned

this off air that we're going to bring this up

and then we're going to bring this up here. I

do not like the fact that they had an actor that

wasn't Hasselhoff with Hasselhoff's voice dubbed

in. I don't like that they used somebody else

to portray Michael Long, but have it be Hasselhoff's

voice, because Hasselhoff doesn't actually appear

until he gets out of the car. in the desert before

he gets shot. That's the first time he appears,

which is so weird because... It is strange. How

did they do that? Because the actor that's playing

him is in the car with Tanya and it's his voice

and they're having a conversation. But you hear

Hasselhoff talking. Right exactly, but what I'm

saying is like when they get to where Lonnie

and Wilson are and he steps out of the car It's

David Hasselhoff. It's not the other actor. It's

not Larry Yeah, and that was just so weird to

me because it's like they obviously didn't stop

on the way So the other actor could get out and

Hasselhoff and get in the you know I mean, that's

just so weird to me. I wish that if they had

done this You know I wish they would have done

that a little bit better. I wish they would have

actually made the other actor playing Michael

Long just make it a completely separate role

because I mean really if you think about it if

if he got his face shot off, you know and What

whatever other damage if it damages vocal cords

or whatever else you would think that Michael

Long could have been his own Distinct character

that you wouldn't have to have David's voice

dubbed over. You could use the actual actor's

voice from what I understand He agreed to do

it, but he didn't I guess there was something

to do with Recording so they had David come in

and speak lines Yeah, and you just saw this other

actor on screen Yeah with with David's voice

overdubbed. Yeah My little light really has nothing

to do with with the actual episode it has to

do with how you watch the episode I suggest watching

this two -part episode or this two -hour episode

on the DVD set versus Netflix or any other online

medium because They break it up into like there's

part one and then there's part two, but it's

broken up so poorly because in part one on Netflix

it just It just ends at the point of where Buddy's

like, oh yeah, we're gonna go to the race and

blah, blah, blah, blah. It just ends right there.

Yeah, it says to be continued probably. No, it

doesn't say to be continued. It just ends and

goes to credits. Oh. Yeah, on Netflix that's

what it does. Wow. Now on the DVD set it's just

one continuous long episode. But the reason why

I say it's broken up poorly is because it just

ends, it goes to credits, and when part two starts

up, when you go to the next episode and go to

part two, it starts out, it gives you a full

two -minute recap of part one. It's so weird

how they did that. But really, that's all I have

for turning the scanners off. What about you?

I would think that... Like you said, I think

Michael Long should have had his own distinct

role in this. I think there were also some other

glitches probably that we may, when we do a recap

later on, whether it be season one through four,

if there might be some serious, some other glitches

we will catch later on. You know, but I think,

like you said, he, you know, Michael Long should

have had his own role. And I think the gentleman's

voice that played Michael Long should have just

spoken. You know, it should have been David.

I think David should have. Come on as Michael

Knight. Yeah, he did come on as Michael Knight,

but I don't think you should have gotten out

of the car like that, because that's it's almost

like, OK, why is Michael Long being played by

two different people? Yeah, I mean it's almost

like a soap thing where it's like Today Johnny

five is going to be played by this person instead

of his original actor. Yeah You know So yeah

But there you go. That's that's everything for

for Night of the Phoenix. We're gonna move on

to the next episode Someone tried to kill me

last night. I think it may be time for another

funeral. Michael, three heat -seeking rockets

are approaching from the southwest. Is this a

car or a spaceship? Take a direct hit, kid! I

don't think we want to find out how. So up next...

Is deadly maneuvers Michael investigates the

suspicious traffic death of an army colonel And

he has stumbled on to a scam kitten navigates

a missile test area and great peril Essentially

what had I I honestly don't know how they can

start this show with something as cool as night

of the phoenix and then go to this episode This

you're asking the wrong human this this episode

is it's okay but it's your general I think that

could have saved it for a later one yeah it's

your general army undercover illegal operation

thing oh god this episode just bores me to death

no it does it's like oh Robin lad is coming back

to see her father, but oh her father's dead blah

blah blah I know damsel in distress on the side

of the road I Will say this episode did have

one good thing about it. It's where most of kids

driving scenes come from yes most of his stock

footage driving scenes on the on the test range

on it so i i did like that about it but the overall

plot is just dumb i didn't like the plot on this

one i really didn't like the plot on this episode

yeah it's just dumb because okay army chick comes

back to surprise her dad finds out her dad she

finds out her dad's dead finds out her dad's

dead and then you've got the the general and

the other mps painting over tactical nuclear

weapons and stealing them and selling them and

blah, blah, blah. I almost call her Cheryl Ladd.

Jesus Christ, this is not Charlie's Angels. You've

got Robin and Michael investigating it and Michael

finds out what's going on. And of course she

gets caught and they trap her in a tank on the

test range. Michael eventually gets to her and

saves her and they chase down the general and

all is well that ends well I guess. That's pretty

much what the plot is. There's nothing of substance

here. No there really isn't. It's one of those

episodes you can watch but it's like okay I'm

not interested. Yeah, the only thing decent about

this episode was the action scenes. Right. I

mean, that's pretty much it. That's about it.

Let's turn these scanners on. For me, I've just

got a few here. Will you stop with the odds I

can handle? Sorry, Michael, you lose. I love

it when Michael plays games when driving or when

when having kit drive because I Mean that was

just ah these computer things are a waste of

time anyway. Yeah, yeah exactly Mysterious car

crash and of course it's faked It goes back to

the bad plot Oh the um When he drew I think he

drives around it, but the scene where the the

car carrier truck is in front of him when he's

trying to figure out when when michael's trying

to figure out the uh... how how her dad died

as far as you know turning into the curve or

whatever else yes you know part of that i could

have sworn when they were chasing him i could

have sworn that he was going to turbo boost either

onto or over the car carrier truck and he didn't

do that he didn't do either one I believe this

is Bonnie's first episode. It is. You can cut

the sexual tension like butter with a knife.

I mean, come on. Yeah. And this is where a very

defunct, a very defunct Night Industries semi

premieres. That semi is just fugly. Yeah. It's

a black cab with a white trailer. Talk about

mixing chocolate and vanilla ice cream In the

inside of the trailer is so Better on the inside

though. Well, okay at times it does at times

in the beginning it does it but the dimensions

of it are so weird because He'll put Michael

pull kit in and As you see that front shot of

kit being in the bay It doesn't look like there's

any room for Michael to open the freaking door

It doesn't look like that and then and then they

switch to a different angle or a different shot

or a different set or whatever else and there's

all the room in the world for him to get out

and Yeah It's one of those It's one of those

weird Those weird camp camera things And of course

yay Michael saves the day, but we really have

to talk about and I wrote this as a highlight

because I think it's just hilarious We need to

talk about this expense report stuff because

in the pilot Devin said new license new credit

cards knew this knew that now I know people have

to pay off credit cards, you know, you charge

something you got to pay it off, but Starting

with this episode and every other episode further,

Michael always mentions, oh, well, this should

be a foundation mission, and I should get my

expense report, and this, that, anything, or

anything else. If he has credit cards that he

can buy stuff with, why is he not using those?

Well, why is he not using those, and why does

he need an expenses report? I don't understand

that. I think that was mostly Devin that wanted

that, wasn't it? I don't know. I'm not entirely

sure. What do you got turning your scanners on,

sir? Oh, you know, like you said, Michael saves

the day. It's one of those episodes that, you

know, like you said, you've got good action scenes.

The plot could have been heightened a bit, I

think. Yeah. But, you know, other than that,

you've got good action scenes. You've got some

good explosions, if you will. You had some good,

you know. You had your ups and downs in this

episode, I think. Yeah, very much so. It is time

to turn the scanners off. And of course, we all

know it's an inside job. I mean, I figured that

out as soon as, you know, some of those military

people were just having shifty eyes about them.

Just, you know, and I know. I know we praise

the the action scenes, but I Know this was shot

in the early 80s Because I'm betting by the time

by the time these episodes aired I'm betting

they filmed them at least six months to a year

before they air Possibly, I don't know I could

be wrong with that But I know they filmed them

enough time before the actual air date Those

gun scenes on the test field when they showed

the soldiers fire It just reminded me like oh

my god. What are we doing in Vietnam? You just

made me think of that. I don't know why But if

you go back and you look at that You you you

look at that specific scene where the cannons

are firing. Yes, it doesn't look like an it doesn't

to me it doesn't look like an eighties military

base i don't know i don't compare to a 70s military

base i don't know what an 80s military base looks

like i mean i'm not expecting like you know new

wave and disco balls and everything else but

it just it just looked so 70s to me yeah i'll

agree with you there i didn't i don't know why

they couldn't have maybe made a little bit of

a modification or something to it um You know

You're right. It did look kind of like, you know

back in the 70s and it's like it just didn't

work It did not work for this episode. No, not

at all. What are the lowlights do you have? The

plot Seriously, yeah, I mean the entire plot.

Yeah, it just I Mean, okay true. It had its action

scenes But I think that's about all you could

walk away with Yeah, pretty much was that was

was the act, you know the action scenes I I just

did not like You know and it you know I'm not

saying that we should help you we shouldn't help

the army or anything like that But I just didn't

like the way that this was written Yeah it It

just played out as a generic and I and I know

we're gonna get a lot of these Not only in Knight

Rider, but in other 80s properties, but I mean,

I know we're gonna get a lot of these generic

episodes But how can you put this In an air date

order that follows night of the Phoenix. I just

don't understand that I don't get it like if

they If they some like okay, I I kind of get

it because it's Bonnie's first episode and from

here on out You constantly have the relationship

between Michael and Bonnie building or lack of

relationship whichever you prefer to use whatever

Maybe I don't even think the term was around

in the 80s, but the essentially they are frenemies

But I just think that if you would switch this

in the order or if you switch this in the continuity,

it would have been fine. Like if you switch this

with like Trust Doesn't Rust or, you know, something

that builds on the continuity you started with

with Night of the Phoenix. I know we're going

to cover this later in the podcast, but I think

I think Trust Shouldn't or Trust Doesn't Rust

rather should have been the next episode. Yeah,

as crazy as that sounds Yeah, possibly All righty

then so we're gonna move on to our final episode

of the day We're hungry real hungry Jackson only

lousy man is ten years out of date what it makes

a fool out of me gets away with is that a fact

Michael they've got Davey wrap it up with this

episode we talk about the good day at white rock

michaels tranquil vacation is interrupted by

a motorcycle gang preparing to do battle with

a rival club plot for this one uh... essentially

what i just said essentially it's there's no

real substance uh... i liked this episode a little

bit better than uh... than deadly maneuvers uh...

i agree But at the same time this is still a

a throwaway episode As far as the plot goes Michael

wants of aka and and what it's like how like

what is time in this universe because Between

night of the Phoenix pilot Deadly maneuvers in

this episode. It seems like six months to a year

has passed within these technically four episodes

Because Michael's like, Oh, I've been doing too

many missions. I need a vacation. I need to recharge.

Speaking of recharging. Yeah. I just don't, I

just don't get it because it's like, Jesus. And

then he gets in there and you know, essentially

this is their, Oh, don't be a bully. Cause there's

always going to be a bigger bully around the

corner episode. Um, yeah. Because the kid that

he meets Davey You know he you know he's like

I'm gonna show this off to my you know cuz he

sees kit Yeah, well right, but you know he is

a kid, but I'm just saying it's like oh You know

you kids are gonna think I'm so cool coming out

of this car ball blah and then of course Instead

of them thinking he's cool. They beat him up

in front of Big brother Donnie's van And then

later, when the motorcycle gang rolls up into

town, they destroy Donnie's van. And Michael

tries to get in between them, but then the sheriff

shows up and is like, oh, it takes two to have

an argument. Blah, blah, blah. The gist of the

plot of this one is the motorcycle gang comes

into town. They fondle up and rough up. uh, Davey's

sister and, you know, that doesn't go over well.

And they're planning on having a war with another

gang, so, you know, this plot is so generic.

Well, it's like you said, it's a throwaway episode

that, you know, could have just been maybe done

later. Yup. Yup. Yes, I totally agree with that

statement. Let's turn the scanners on when when

Davey is talking about When Davey is talking

about kit Michael is fantasizing about his sister.

There's nothing wrong there No, there isn't But

I think it's I think it's neat that you know

Davey appreciates kit as a car and Not only that

Davey actually gets to take a ride in in kit

Yeah, every kid, pretty much, that appears in

episodes. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Good message,

you only fight when it's the last option. That

is a good message, yes. Yes. Of course, the biker

gang comes to town, yay. We see all these. giant

ass motorcycles again with the comedy relief

this time instead of having humans you have animals

kit versus the dog that was hilarious yeah that

was so awesome he's like shoot go away you mongrel

oh that was very awesome it never liked dogs

no uh so michael gets locked up tries to make

a phone call the lines are busy and then he becomes

MacGyver and gets out essentially because he

uh uses the um you know he creates something

out of the the lining of the blankets to grab

the key uh meanwhile Kit uh... powers where the

impound uh... impound lot while a couple is having

sex in the car in front of them uh... uh... i

swear to god it's a titanic moment all over again

i know isn't it you notice that too oh yes uh...

the uh... the action scenes of the bikers versus

kidder awesome especially the jump kit makes

uh... Yet the bikers fall flat and again no turbo

boost that was just no that was not there was

no just being you know, just just jumping And

of course again the sexual jokes continue at

the end How long should we drive until one of

us runs out of gas So funny, although I will

say the one the one chick that was playing Davey's

sister wasn't bad -looking She wasn't that bad

-looking at all What do you got for highlights

for this one not too much I mean, it's like you

said, it's a good message I'm kind of agreeing

off of what you know off of what you're saying

good message. Don't fight unless it's the last

option Yeah, I think if kids are watching this

episode You know, even if it's a little bit,

you know, if they have a parent sit and watch

with them and kind of explain Yeah, but about

fighting and and the differences and things like

that It's it won't it wouldn't it wouldn't be

so bad. It's not that bad of an episode There's

a lesson to be taught in this episode. Yeah.

Yeah, this was their lesson episode That's always

good. All right. Let's turn the scanners off.

And surprisingly, when I was watching this, I

didn't find too many things like I don't have

anything written down for a low light on this

one. I like I enjoyed the episode for what it

is. But at the same time, like I didn't feel

like anything like glaringly stuck out at me.

There's one thing there's one thing I can say

that probably bothered me. And that was the fact

that near the end of the episode when Michael

is trying to convince the sheriff. Look, you

got a serious problem on your hands. Yeah, you're

not listening to me. And yet you're letting all

this crap go on. So you got a choice. Either

I saved the town and you're going to help me

or I saved the town without you. Yeah, I think

that was the one. I think it was not the highlight.

I'm sorry. The low light that stuck out is that,

OK, you have to have somebody who's not even

on your police force. Make that decision. Well,

the thing of it was was, and I'm not trying to

defend you having that as a low light, but the

thing of it was was that sheriff was more keeping

the peace than enforcing the law. Yeah, but you

have to do both. Right. Well, he realized that

at the end. Yeah, yeah. But I mean, I guess what

I was, and I should have clarified and said that

he should have done that anyway. I mean, I understand

he's a peace officer. And, you know, he's a law

officer as well. But, you know, even as he said

with with accent with the accent on enforcement.

So, you know, I think that I think that was my

only low light on this episode per se. Yeah.

Yeah, I can kind of see that because, like I

said, you know. You know, when you first see

it, it's like, oh, is this going to be in? Because

it's a running gag in this series. Of course.

There's always a gag. Well, no. No, it's like,

no. I mean, bad running gags. Like, you know,

this is a Dirty Cop episode, or this is a Dirty

Lawyer episode, or this is a, you know. I mean,

Mob Boss, I can kind of see, but it's like, whenever

I get to... after this episode whenever i get

to one where it's like oh another crooked cop

it's just like you know we should have a crooked

cop count and i'm not saying that i'm not saying

that this sheriff is a crooked cop he's just

a lazy cop god i hope no police officers listen

to this So alright, I think I've dug myself in

enough enough trouble here, so we are going to

head to some ads Possibly hear some other quotes

from from the episodes today, and we'll come

back to close the show after that yes, shut up

just keep driving so we are back here on beyond

the night and before we close up shop We're gonna

rank the episodes I'm not sure like as far as

what the What the total like if we're actually

gonna do anything with the rankings at the end

of the podcast but Because math is evil and I

can die and go to hell. Yes it can But we are

going to rank each episode X amount out of five

kit cars. So for Night of the Phoenix, I give

it a five out of five kit cars. What about you?

I give it a five out of five. It was very well

written. The plot explained everything. I kind

of wish like, you know, like we had discussed

the beginning. Character Michael Long had his

own distinct role, but you know what in the end

it redeemed itself It redeemed itself, so it

wasn't that bad. Yeah, I mean that's just a slight

nitpick and of course There's nothing we can

do about it now this day and age, but you know

you know it's just something that and that's

one thing I want to reiterate to the listeners

is that The point of all of our review shows

here at gate cast radio network is that we analyze

it and we pick shit apart That's just how we

do things. For Deadly Maneuvers, I'm actually

giving it a one kit car out of five. One. The

only reason why it even gets a one and not a

zero is because of the fact that it created a

majority of kits driving stock footage. Yeah,

I'll agree with that one. Good day at White Rock.

What do you give it? I give it a two. I'm going

to give it a three out of five. Yeah, I don't

know. I really liked it. I see why you're giving

it a two because of your issue with the with

the police with the sheriff. Yeah. But overall,

I thought it was really it's like it's a good

episode. Like I said, I'm not saying it's a bad

episode. I'm not saying it's horrible. I guess

I guess I'm just you know, two out of five. Yeah.

And for me, three out of five. I think the reason

why I gave it a 3 out of 5 is just purely because

of Kit versus the dog. So before I close up the

show you want to tell the listeners where they
