About this Episode

Neil and Mike continue their journey through Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog with five more episodes: Babysitter Jitters, Honey I Shrunk the Hedgehog, Robotnik Land, The Mobius 5000, and The Little Merhog. The hosts struggle through increasingly repetitive plots, from yet another babysitting story to undersea adventures, while finding brief moments of relief when the show incorporates actual Sonic game elements.

Welcome to episode 90 of the pixels in the animation.

Holy crap. We got 10 podcasts left folks. That's

it. We're done I Don't even think we're gonna

end up tapping out early, but after today we

might cuz oh my god The next five episodes of

adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. What the hell

were they thinking? I don't know I am of course

Dave Jones, might you join me as TV's Mr. Nail?

I dream of my own death, over and over and over.

God this show won't end. 65 episodes is too long,

it's kinda like a 7 hour WrestleMania. Every

night is like watching an epic length movie trying

to watch 5 episodes in a row. And on some of

these nights we've actually recorded two podcasts

so that's ten episodes in a row I'll say it right

now These series producers fucked up royally

The Chaos Emeralds arc should have been the final

five or final four episodes of this series Cuz

going from the conclusion to chaos emeralds last

time with prehistoric sonic to today's first

episode babysitter jitters Mm -hmm. I Don't even

think my brain can hurt as much as it did like

I would rather listen to the lady from the Mario

Brothers babysitter episode Oh You're the plum

you're the Mario bro. Oh god I'd rather listen

to that then go i was half expecting them to

turn robotnik into a baby in this episode i really

was so babysitter jitters sonic entails babysitter

trio of unruly baby beavers is that why you posted

that beaver pic the other day no it had nothing

to do with that okay i just who end up being

abducted by Scratch and Grounder. Robotnik uses

the beavers as bait to capture Sonic and Tails,

but the beavers become resourceful and help their

friends thwart Robotnik. The Sonic Says segment,

kind of fitting. It's all about babysitting,

and, you know, paying attention, and making sure,

whatever. Adventures in babysitting. The Anderson

Kids. Sarah. Mom got Chris to babysit for me.

Chris. Her brother Brad. Oh my god. His best

friend Darryl. Who is this kid? Grey dog. Take

good care of my baby. I'll guard her with my

life. What could possibly go wrong? babysitting.

And this is only the beginning. You could say

they were having a bad night. If they weren't

having such a good time. Adventures in babysitting

I Would rather watch that movie a million times

over on repeat than ever watch this episode ever

again Because I mean at least that you have Superman

and Thor in one movie That is true So This is

the dumbest episode There have been a lot of

dumb episodes in this series, but this is the

dumbest and the most boring episode The animation

was alright, but it's your standard baby episode

Yeah, it's you know what it is it's problem child

It's worse than problem child this problem children

It's worse than problem child this problem child

to Actually, you know what that movie's not half

bad compared to this Someone at Deke must have

saw that movie and was like oh, yeah, this is

gonna be this is gonna be a story We're gonna

use in every cartoon because like you said they

used it in the Mario cartoon and they used it

here And this theme has been like, this is not

new. Even at 1993, 1994 standards, this was not

new. There have been plenty of other babysitter

type cartoon episodes from various other, you

know. You're gonna kill me, but I have to. On

Easter egg. No, no, you know, that's not even,

no. I mean, you know, it's like, They took the

skull and bones guy out of the mountain, put

him on earth with a bunch of kids and a dog.

I used to like being evil. I would rather watch

the He -Man and She -Ware Christmas special over

and over and over again than watch this episode

again. As bad as that is. The Skeletor face turned.

Yeah, don't worry Skeletor Christmas is only

once a year Seriously And really all of Mario

3 is a babysitter cartoon because of a hoop of

kids Which I just saw a video recently I don't

know. I don't even know how I got subscribed

to this channel on YouTube. It's the gamer is

the name of the channel and it's this guy that

does various countdowns and things of games and

like history of game type things and one of them

was are the koopa kids actually koopa's kids

and in the video the guy says something about

no they're really not or something i i forget

what it was but it just i don't know honestly

and this is gonna be really bad i would rather

watch cootie pie rocks more than this episode

you are out of your mind that's how bad this

episode was for me it was just oh my god i i

i like that the babies eventually ended up helping

them but the whole time you can Sonic's whole

thing details babes as in girls not kids, and

I'm like is that a Is that a message we need

to be teaching our children? Okay, well in some

instances yes, but What did you well well babes

is how we get babies? Yeah This this cartoon

I It I just watched it a couple hours ago and

it's it's already kind of a blur already Because

I just hated it so much. Yeah, I I have nothing

to say it's just like it just goes through all

the all the steps of your typical problem child

type story where the the The kid is just a total

bastard. And then the bad guys come along, and

he starts torturing the bad guys, too. And at

the end of the episode, the parent comes back

and goes, oh, thank you for looking after Junior.

He's usually so tough to deal with. You must

be really good. I don't think they did it in

this one, but they usually say, can I have you

back next week, or something like that. Oh, no,

they did it in this one. Oh, they did? Yeah.

Oh. He said, would you mind watching them again

so my wife and I can go on a much -needed vacation?

The parents went on vacation at the end. Oh,

God. Yep. Yep. Oh, no. They did it. They didn't

pull any punches on that one. I know. I must

have, uh... You must have zomped out. I must

have messed up or something. Yeah. Oh, God. One.

at best i i was so by the first five minutes

i was bored and angry so yeah one out of five

what about you point five okay all right there

you go that works honey i shrunk the hedgehog

Sonic says segment was all about recycling which

almost has nothing to do I guess it kind of I

don't know Sonic and Tails in a group of miners

are hit by Robotnik shrink ray and must work

together to undo the effects Is it just me or

were those Scottish miners? Did those damn things

have Scottish acts loosely? Yeah Really seriously

I mean, I'd rather listen to Groundskeeper Willie.

At least he's funny. Yeah, at least he's funny.

Very, very true. Um, this one was better than

the last one, but not by much. I mean, because

Honey I Shrunk the Hedgehog, you know, I mean,

the only thing this is missing is Rick Moranis.

See, it just shows you how dated this is because...

If this was made today, it would be more of an

Ant -Man reference. Or if you really want to

go do a deep cut, you could say that you could

make a reference to Kandor out of it. Or the

Hyperstone heist from Sega Genesis Teenage Mutant

Ninja Turtles game. Now come to think of it,

this is another trope that gets used a lot. The

Shrunken City. Yeah, shrunken city, shrunken

people, shrunken everything. One of the funniest

moments that it was used is in Phineas and Ferb.

Well, you've got nieces and nephews, or just

nieces, because I know your sister has kids.

So you've seen Phineas and Ferb, right? Some

of it. You know the basic thing of Dr. Doofenshmirtz,

he's the evil scientist. Okay, so he makes all

these inators, and these inators are supposed

to help him take over the Tri -State area. Well,

in one episode he just left his Shrinkinator

out on the terrace that he has and just kept

piling post -it notes on it saying, turn off

Shrinkinator, turn off Shrinkinator. At one point

after it gets destroyed by Perry the Platypus,

It usually after every inator gets destroyed

it usually gets one shot off and affects something

else in the show Well, it affects him by freakishly

shrinking him. So everything is shrunken except

his giant fist So that's really the only time

I can really like buy into the whole trope of

the shrinking thing Because it was hilarious

because he was freakishly shrunken, but I mean

I think even He -Man and She -Ra did this. I

know Transformers did this because there was

an episode called Microbots where they actually

went inside Megatron. Yeah. Because that was

the one where Megatron and all the Decepticons

were drunk off of Energon. I think that was one

of the very rare episodes of Transformers where

it was a Perceptor -led episode. I don't think

Perceptor usually led a lot of episodes. That

and the mask of Nechika or whatever the hell

that episode was. From one of the worst episodes

of Season 3. See, honey, I shrunk the hedgehog.

I'd rather have Mama Robotnik back. I'll give

it a... Two and a half, I guess. It's better

than the last one. How about you? I'll give it

a one and a half. I need to wash the bitter taste

out of my mouth with this episode and its recycling

message. Wash it down with some banter or something.

Oh, we'll talk about that at the end of this

show. Because that's one of the reasons why you

know people won't know this but well they will

when I tell them but So next up is Robotnik land

How many times is he gonna do this? I know I

feel like I've seen this episode already Robotnik

takes control of the local amusement park on

Sonic's birthday. So this is the second Sonic

birthday episode in this series Because didn't

we have one where his tails was worried about

the present. He was gonna give Sonic Yeah, sir.

Yeah, so Sonic has had two birthdays when within

the span of One year within like three months

in the same year because this episode aired November

18th of 93 so maybe Mobius goes around the Sun

more often than the earth does I don't know I

Don't even want to try to think about that You

don't want to rationalize that. I don't even

think we could rationalize that if we wanted

to. Not that we want to. The Sonic Says segment

was all about cooking! I'm so glad cartoons today

do not have PSAs. This one was just meh. I mean,

there are a few good jokes that I chuckled at,

but it just feels repetitive. I mean... I wasn't

even fading. I know what happens. You know, Sonic

tries, you know, Robotnik tries to capture him

and he gets away. It's the same... Oh, some of

the babble in this show, like... Sonic couldn't

escape it because the windows were made out of

tempered glass and the ground is made out of

reinforced concrete. I'm like, that's not how

reinforced concrete works. Yeah, no. That's not

what it is. It's like it's like that scene in

King Kong where he's like, don't worry, folks,

those chains are made of chrome steel. What does

that have to do with the with the with the with

the strength of steel? It doesn't. You mentioned

chrome and all's I can think of is that scene

in baseball Mmm. Oh god with Jenny McCarthy.

That would be a good commentary for us to do

baseball Any other thoughts on Robotnik land

No, let's hope it stays closed forever one out

of five for me. I guess what about you one? Alright,

same here The Mobius 5000. Oh boy. Oh racing.

We're off to the wacky races. Yeah. Sonic and

Tails enter a car race in order to save an orphanage

that Robotnik threatens to shut down. Sonic says

saying it was car safety. So at least that matched.

This is probably the best episode of the day.

For one simple reason. There are more sonic game

elements in this one episode and then the entire

series of this cartoon They talk about chemical

plant. They talk about casino night They actually

show Sonic going into and coming out of the special

zone. So yeah, just on that alone Mobius 5000

gets a four out of me, but I mean I like the

plot. It's your standard kind of plot where you

know They have to save the orphanage and and

all of that I'm not too sure about the hedgehog

and possums mating season. That just seems wrong

many not a thought I needed in my head it's in

the episode don't get me what did you think of

Mobius 5000 okay I don't know this this show

is getting really long in the tooth now and they're

just kind of throwing whatever at the wall see

what sticks So like I said, this is basically

a wacky races light Yeah, without you know without

the funny jokes. Yeah So the game elements don't

really do anything for me. It doesn't mean anything

to me It's I mean it did when I realized what

they were doing and I thought it was cool You

know Because If you're going to do a cartoon

based on a video game, it's nice to see those

elements or those areas in there somewhere. I

mean, obviously the whole planet of Mobius is

an entire planet and everything else, but it's

nice to know that the Chemical Plant Zone, the

Casino Night Zone, the Hilltop Zone, the Green

Hill Zone, whatever, it's all kinda in there.

What are you gonna give this one? Two. Alright.

Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel.

The Little Murhog. Five years removed from the

Little Mermaid when this came out. It's actually

worse than I thought it would be. Sonic and Tails

help a mermaid hedgehog named Murma. No, Murna,

not Murma. Well, I misread that. To save her

underwater city from the wrath of Captain John

Paul Memo. Just call him Nemo you idiots and

for some odd reason it was all the Sonic says

segment was all about matches and fire and Well,

if you're gonna have a water episode why not

have a fire lesson You could have just had the

damn thing be a swimming lesson where it's like,

you know, don't swim alone or you know This one

just... God, it is just so bad. I don't even

know what to say. Because it ends with Sonic

getting a smooch from the merhog. I'm like, why?

Why don't you have a girlfriend already in this

in this show? Where's Sally a cord? Where's where's?

Yeah You have lots of girlfriends you got it

you got a harem almost as big as Mario's Actually,

I think Sonic's harem is a little bigger cuz

Mario has peach and Luigi has Daisy Yeah, but

all those girls even Pauline they they were and

what's the other one Rosaline they They've all

been the damsel for Mario at some point. Yeah.

I mean, Daisy is just Mario's sloppy seconds.

It's true. Wow. That's just... That's just so

wrong. Yeah, what a way to... What a way to end

this podcast because holy crap this episode was

just bad It really really was oh my god so bad

Yeah, I can't even zero flat zero Zero I'm at

a loss to even explain the plot. It's just uh

Bad guys are doing bad things and we gotta stop

them and that's not a story. Yeah Go back to

the drawing board. Try again. Mm -hmm. Fired,

all of you. Well, and they tried to make, um,

they tried to make the villain some sort of weird

pirate -type Yar character, and it's like, no,

go home, writer, you're drunk, because holy crap.

It's like, we can't possibly make this card,

this Sonic cartoon any worse. Hold my beer. You

know? You know? It's just... We'll do an undersea

adventure with an Atlantis type city where Sonic

and Tails have to save all the Atlanteans from

the evil pirate sea hag or whatever Red dog the

pirate With his with his mechanical octopus Yeah,

Cup, Grimlock, Schlagg, anybody. Oh God. You

know, I was gonna save this for the closing,

but I don't even think we need to take a break,

but so I know it's been around for maybe a month

or so or more. But Boomerang has launched their

pay -as -you -go streaming service. You can either

buy a yearly package for what ends up being $3

.33 a month, or you can just do a monthly package

for $5 a month, and you can watch pretty much

anything they have on there. So I've been exploring

this. They've got all the Looney Tunes, not just

the classic stuff. They've got all the new stuff,

but they've got all the... Just this morning

before we recorded there, before I was watching...

because i had to break this up i could not watch

these five episodes all in a row i had to watch

one watch a looney two and watch one watch a

looney two so i ended up watching um rabbit fire

duck rabbit duck and and rabbit seasoning the

classic trilogy the classic trilogy that's right

um and uh You know, they also have other movies

like Scooby -Doo and the Witch's Ghost and things

like that. And the only reason why I bring up

Scooby -Doo and the Witch's Ghost is because

it's got Jennifer Hale in it as the lead Hex

girl. Come on. Yeah. Everybody loves Thorne.

I don't care what anyone says about Scooby -Doo.

Everybody loves Thorne. They've got, which I

would rather watch this movie more than this

Little Murhog episode. Cause of the pirate cause

of the whole pirate villain underwater villain

thing in the in the little murrog They've got

on there tom and jerry shiver me whiskers with

all my blue beard black beard purple beard whatever

So they've got that on there. Um, it's for five

bucks a month They've got so much stuff on it's

so fucking cool to see all the old stuff And

it's worth like I I have always said for the

last five or six years I'm only paying for Netflix

and Hulu. I'm not paying for CBS, NBC, whatever.

Any of these networks that come up with their

own streaming service, unless it's free, I'm

not, there's no way in hell. But Boomerang, to

get all the classic cartoons, you damn right

I'll pay for it. They've got the good, the bad,

the huckleberry on there. Oh my god. Uh huh.

Isn't that one of the last Dawes Butler cartoons?

I think so, yeah. Cause doesn't he play the blue

eyed stranger in that one? He plays all of those

characters. He was the entire Hannah Barbera

character. I know Dawes was, I'm saying, but

isn't that the movie where Huckleberry was the

handsome blue eyed stranger type? Howdy y 'all.

Howdy y 'all. But Sonic... we've got two episodes

of cartoons left for sonic folks 91 and 92 and

I Only hope they get a little better a little

bit I'm not I'm not expecting like a quick turn

around here at all But I mean anything is got

to be better than today All right next time episode

91. We've got Roadhog the robots robot tails

tail or tails his tail hero of the year And as

I said at the beginning of the podcast, fast

and easy. So there is that. Maybe that's where

Rouge comes in. I know she's not in this series.

Thank God. For her sake or for ours? For ours.

Because we don't need any more peripheral Sonic

characters. Way too many of those already. Yeah,

true. Although Ken Pender's did us a favor. He

took a lot of them away. Thank you. Yeah. I mean,

and at this point, I'm so I think at this point

in the series, after the episodes we talked about

today, they've built it up enough to where. I'm

not missing Sally or rotor or even even though

I love Antoine I'm not really missing Antoine

because at this point we have recur like we said

a couple episodes ago they're bringing characters

back you know we have recurring characters in

this series now we're in the beginning I thought

they were all just gonna be kind of one -shot

characters but still this cartoon can't end fast

enough mm -hmm just can't end fast enough please

pull that bandaid off there's a there's an mst3k

episode where uh tom servo just loses it at the

end of the movie he's like and and and that's

like that's kind of what i feel like So I was

gonna wait until episode 94 to bring this up

But we did get an email our buddy cosmic psycho

who had left us the one of the original iTunes

reviews on the podcast who had said He wasn't

sure his review was that he wasn't sure if we

were gonna be able to make it through all 100

planned episodes That was part of his review.

That's why I kind of remember him He says, hello,

CosmicPsycho here and I'm a fan of the Sad AM

series and you asked for a fan defense. The reason

it's difficult to understand some of the story

points and when characters were introduced out

of nowhere is because the show was running concurrently

with the comic series, so a lot of the stories

overlapped. While not good for consistency, the

fans who were following both got the full experience.

Yeah, I was aware of that, but that's... Some

people may not be aware that's not necessarily

a good idea for a cartoon show Yeah, no because

if you're just watching the cartoon then it's

like what the hell mm -hmm Well, I mean it you

know it's like Okay, so it's been 91 92 yeah

91 it's been about you know 20 some odd years

20 26 some odd years or whatever since the original

Darkwing Duck Disney afternoon cartoon came out

And they now have a Darkwing Duck comic series

That's actually current today, you know, so that's

fine. I don't mind that I don't mind when shows

of today try to do the the comic kind of tie

like, you know Well, it's not just a tie -in

it's that If you have to rely on the comic to

have supplemental material to make the TV show

make sense, then that's kind of a problem. Whereas

that's not really what's going on with Darkwing

Duck. It's more of an adaptation, a continuation

of the TV show. And in fact, you probably don't

even need to have watched the TV show to appreciate

the comic and vice versa. Yeah, that's very true.

I don't know what Nintendo was thinking back

then. Nintendo, Sega, whoever. I don't know what

they were thinking back then because... They

were thinking, money! We can license our shit

out to Deke. Please reevaluate your life choices.

Let's have them do two cartoons at the same fucking

time. You have chosen poorly. He chose poorly.

Yes. Oh God, it's just so bad. Alright folks,

we're gonna get the heck out of here. Maybe we'll

catch you next time when we talk about the next

five episodes of this series. When will it bloody

fucking end? I don't know. Serenity now. Insanity

later
