About this Episode

TFG1Mike and TV's Mr. Neil review five episodes from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog: Sonic's Song (about Robotnik outlawing music), Birth of a Salesman (featuring a conniving gadget salesman named Wes Weasley), Best Hedgehog (revealing Robotnik's backstory and a chaotic wedding), Robotnik Express (a train-based adventure with mistaken identity), and Too Tall Tales (Tails accidentally enlarged by a growth machine). The hosts discuss recurring themes, animation quality, and compare the series to other Sonic cartoons and classic Looney Tunes.

Hey, this is Captain N and you are listening

to Pixels in the Animation. Welcome to episode

82 of the Pixels in the Animation. I'm of course

TFJ and Mike. Joining me is TV's Mr. Dale. Hidey

-ho Winslows. Oh my god. I think the problem

with this series, folks, is the lack of characters.

I really hate to say that, but like, it's like

Autobot and Decepticon of unevenness, essentially,

is what it is because Robotnik, Scratch and Grounder,

that's three main right there, plus any other

robots or things that Robotnik makes against

Sonic and Tails. Oh, and the fourth main character...

God Knuckles is evil twin there the monkey coconuts

coconuts. Yeah, I Mean I laugh at these episodes,

but I also cringe at these episodes too cuz Well,

I don't I don't think you're supposed to sit

there and watch them ensemble that I think that's

part of the problem because yeah kind of the

theme here is that we're doing five episodes

a Podcast and it represents like an entire week

of programming as it would have aired back in

the day So you're supposed to watch this like

one at a time It does get kind of tiring when

you watch five in a row They have one, I think

it's in next week. It was absolutely hilarious.

It's a nod to the show itself. It's one of those

wink and you'll miss it kind of things. Yeah.

I think I know what you're talking about. The

TV show. We'll talk about that next week. All

right, so starting off today we have Sonic's

song outraged by a popular song about Sonic Robotnik

outlaws music on Mobius and takes the song's

composer captive with the intent of creating

his own theme song the Sonic says segment was

all about hearing and how you shouldn't listen

to loud music and You know all that happy PSA

type stuff I actually like this one a little

bit because it's not often that you see a cartoon

like this tackling I mean we've seen it before

but it's not very often that it happens that

you tackle the whole at least not in cartoon

form it happens in TV shows and movies all the

time I mean just look at glitter no please don't

And it's horrible if if glitter wasn't bad enough

they actually made a sequel to that movie. Oh

my god I Thought this was kind of fun cool. It

was a radio thing that they were doing and you

know the whole radio station thing and the fact

that Robotnik wants to outlaw music yet. That's

not you can cut music program funding, but there's

no way in hell that you're gonna outlaw music

and he has this Music robot who he puts in charge

of the SS SSS because scratching ground are essentially

useless You basically demotes them to background

singers Yeah, and and this giant robot doesn't

he's he's sent out to to stop all music But he

doesn't recognize Robotnik's music as music so

he leaves them alone Yeah I will say Long John

Baldry did an amazing job with the singing, though,

as a robotnik. That was hilariously good. What

did you think of this one? I thought it was pretty

funny. I like when the cat character, I totally

forgot her name, but she gets captured and the...

The larger robot starts to leave and she starts

leaving with him That was a pretty good laugh

Pretty decent episode. It's like like I had Said

at the top of the episode when you watch these

all like in one big Chunk in one big batch, you

know, they kind of all run together. So I might

start running out of things to say episodes Yeah

um... you know i like this i think it's interesting

you know how the center was a fan of sonics and

actually uh... it's either this episode this

podcast or next week's episode where we'll run

into another super sonic fan i think it's next

week's episode so that's kind of interesting

i like how they're showing mobius to be that

they're showing it in two different ways they're

showing it the ways that it seems that robotnik

has almost taken over he hasn't taken over yet

but he's almost taking over and at the same time

you're also seeing other Mobians I guess you'd

call them around the place and and everything

and I thought that was kind of cool and like

I said seeing the whole radio angle here I'm

still only gonna give this a three I enjoyed

this but it there wasn't anything that enraged

me there wasn't anything that you know Maybe

jump up and down for joy What about you I kind

of like that in a lot of these episodes Sonic's

like a superstar and everyone basically worships

him and you have Robotnik who's kind of like

this wannabe King Kim Jong -un or whatever his

name is yeah, basically trying to Do outlaw everything,

but he's just too moronic to do so Yeah. Yeah,

I'll give it a three. Yeah, that's an interview

I don't ever want to do. Yeah. Yeah, that's an

interview I don't think I would ever want to

do when it comes to Robotnik, but if Long John

Baldry was still with us, he would be an awesome

interview. Yeah. May the man rest in peace. Right.

Alright, so up next we've got... Birth of a salesman

so before I even watched this there's two things

I think of and I mentioned this last time to

Ralph is Ralph from the Berenstain Bears mm -hmm

and Joey from Cadillac man Robin Williams as

the car salesman in Cadillac man it's the first

two things I thought of when I saw the title

of this one An energetic salesman named Wes Weasley

sells Robotnik numerous gadgets to help scratch

and ground her. Capture Sonic, however Robotnik

later, comes to regret it when Weasley's gadgets

keep backfiring. And the Sonic Says segment was

about false advertising. There is that. This

one was hilarious because it's your standard...

Honestly, it's your standard Daffy cartoon without

Daffy. Pretty much. I mean, it's pretty much

the standard Looney Tunes Daffy the salesman.

There was a couple of Daffy shorts where he tried

selling somebody a smart house and a whole bunch

of other gadgets and whatever else. And that's

essentially what this is and I thought this was

hilarious. It's just all the gadgets that consistently

did not work and then The guy has the gall to

tell robotic. Oh, it's not the gadgets. It's

the it's it's not It's not the technology. It's

it's the users. It's Technically he was right.

They all worked. Yeah, it just it's just that

the the stupid robots didn't it kept falling

for They kept falling for Sonic's tricks. Yep.

What did you like about Birth of a Salesman?

Well, I caught the reference that's a reference

to Death of a Salesman. But I also like that

the salesman himself, Weasley, is kind of based

on an old character actor. I don't remember the

guy's name, but he was like the ultimate kiss

ass. He's like, Oh, yes, sir. Absolutely, sir.

And he recognized that right away. And it shows

up in a lot of old Hanna Barbera cartoons to

that voice. So I thought that was pretty funny.

I do like the kind of flim flam artist, but he

was... Like I said, he was correct. It wasn't

the products that were failing. It was scratching

grounder. And even Robotnik was like, yeah, you

know what? You're right. At one point when Robotnik

called him a flim -flammer, you know what the

first thing I thought of, and I know this is

bad, but the first thing I thought of was flim

-flam from 13 Ghosts of Scooby -Doo. The worst.

He's like double scrappy. uh... all we're going

to let alone no that the worst scooby -doo character

ever uh... birth of a salesman i am probably

although i don't know the other uh... you know

what the other thing that i noticed it uh...

we're melting we're melting a wicked witch reference

really come on scratch Like that was like the

one part of the cartoon that I was kind of like

really that was like That was kind of a stretch

that Sonic was making so much fire with his speed

that it not only caused the ice to melt, but

it caused the robots to melt. I'm like No, no,

come on I'm gonna give this one a three and a

half. What about you? I'll give it a three best

hedgehog now this is not best hedgehog ever this

is just best hedgehog and Sonic and Tails rescue

Lucas Robotnik's first ever prisoner and attempt

to reunite him with his girlfriend Lucinda however

Robotnik is also in love with Lucinda and pursues

Lucas the Sonic Says segment has nothing to do

with marriage and all that crap it has to do

with reading and you know how everyone should

be reading and and learning and even though some

people read slower than others and yeah yeah

yeah standard psa that has nothing to do with

the actual episode uh... take a look it's in

a book please no really we do not need really

in here at the reading rainbow reference yeah

i don't but but but but it's pretty much forage

uh... This one I liked up until the point where

he becomes best hedgehog at the wedding that

was just weird Because what I liked about this

was we're actually getting some sort of story

About you know how Robotnik kind of came into

power type of thing and like I said, he's not

He doesn't fully control Mobius. He he's villain

that wants to constantly take over This series

is not like Sad AM where he's already taken over

Robotnik is Skeletor I think that's my goal at

this point for the rest of this cartoon series

is to figure out how many He -Man references

I can make I like the story here. I like the

fact that you have Lucas and Lucinda and you

see a backstory for Robotnik and I think the

only thing that I didn't really care for was

young Robotnik. That was just... That design

was just... It was like totally gross and had

pimples. And he still had the full mustache!

Of course he did. God and I like how Robotniks

version of the flashback is totally warped He's

like he's like the handsome savior and like Lucas

is the is the big bully Jock who comes in He's

like get away from my girl. I do say sir Yeah

That was great. That's that's a classic joke.

Yeah. Oh, yeah. Well, it's a classic role reversal

type thing I did think it was funny that he had

like icky boogers and and and bulls and everything

And like I said I Was fine with the episodes

continuity and everything up until the point

where on it Sonic came in best hedgehog no Don't

want to know what a hedgehog bachelor party would

be like it'd be you know nothing, but chili dogs

What about the scene where he actually marries?

Sonic is slowly turning into Bugs Bunny here.

Yes He's he's done the female Dress up at least

twice now at least twice in this series now.

Yeah And the crazy thing is, all I can think

of is, out of sheer honesty, don't you have anything

to say? Out of sheer honesty. Yes. I feel good

love, it's not dinner. Bang! It's all I can think

of. Oh my god. Would you like to shoot him here?

Wait till you get home. Wait till you get home.

Oh god. You keep out of this. He doesn't have

to shoot you now. He does so have to shoot me

now and I say shoot me now. You're despicable.

Oh my god. I think this podcast has turned into

a Looney Tunes review. We wanted to start talking

about Looney Tunes video games. Oh no. I don't

think there is a good Looney Tunes video game.

Crazy Castle wasn't that bad. Bugs Bunny and

Crazy Castle on Game Boy. Alright, uh, yeah,

Sonic dressed up as the... And it's so obv -

like, how does Robotnik not know this? I mean,

half of his blue is sticking out of his veil.

Like, how do you not know that that's Sonic?

Because he's an idiot. Yeah, that's true. It's

just like Elmer Fudd can't recognize that it's

Bugs dressed as a woman. Yeah, that is true.

Very true. Am gonna give this one a three. What

about you? I'll give it a three as well Let's

all hop on board the Robotnik Express. Like I

said last time there's only one Express folks.

It's the USA Cartoon Express In route to stop

a train of explosives from arriving at Robotnik's

Munition Factory Sonic and Tails must deal with

the duo of bears named Big Grizz and Big Mike

No relation to me after scratching ground or

tell them that Sonic and Tails are actually their

enemies So standard trope of character swapping

yeah And they actually believe it Because they're

that I thought bears were smarter than that Any

thoughts on this one? Um, just that, uh... Well,

first of all, they kept saying dub bears, which

is, you know, obviously a reference to the Superfans,

and Chicago, which they actually do talk like

that in Chicago, you know, east of here, and

it's like, everyone talks like this, you know?

This man, this, yeah. And they can't pronounce

the names of the sports. stadiums like thank

god they changed the name of comiskey park because

every everyone in chicago called it comitski

like gosh you guys are morons but yeah there

was that and then i saw the the identity confusion

coming like a mile away yeah it was two minutes

before it actually happened because i'm like

okay they just said that they've never seen sonic

or tails before and it's going to be that sonic

tails are going to go away and they're going

to find scratching grounder and sure enough that's

exactly what happened god damn it i hate when

i can predict the the plot of the episode yep

yeah that you know if you can predict the plot

like uh you know Two minutes into a 22 minute

cartoon then you're there's something wrong.

It's gonna be a long episode uh -huh and So yeah

And the sun like I said earlier the sonic says

segment was you know don't talk to strangers

don't get into strangers cars Which is a good

PSA? Stranger danger But the overall episode

I gotta give it a two I'll give it a two. It

wasn't one of the better ones. Basically speed.

Movie speed. We got a train, it's going 60 or

70 miles an hour, however fast trains go. Probably

much faster than that. And it can't stop. I'd

combine that with the end of Back to the Future

3. But Sally Acorn's not here to you know step

out and get her dress caught and thank God have

He what it is to cut these things to damn close.

Oh boy Yeah, just way too strange all right finally

up today we've got two tall tales I swear I saw

a movie about this but Anyway, Two Tall Tales.

You know why Robotic Express was about a very

good episode? It was written by Doug Booth. And

this one, Two Tall Tales, Robi Gorin, so another

He -Man alum, He -Man, She -Man alum. Robotnik

takes Professor Von Schlemmer hostage and uses

his growth machine to try and enlarge himself.

However, the machine backfires and enlarges tails

instead in a nearby... Wienerville? Really? Seriously,

that's the name of the town? Wienerville? Come

on! Hi, I'm Wimpy from Wienerville. I love me

some hamburgers. That's all you think of is Wimpy.

I shouldn't say what I was thinking of. Just

say it. I wonder if this is anywhere near Pussyville.

One leads into the other, but you know. Talk

about going down the wrong hole. Wait a second

Wienerville pussy villain ass town All right,

so yeah Sonic must keep the famished tales from

getting into more danger as Robotnik tricks the

citizens into thinking that Sonic is the villain

and while Robotnik is the hero planning to save

the city the Sonic sags Sonics Wow Sonic Says

segment was healthy diets This is essentially

Honey I Blew Up the Kid or Big Fat Liar or any

of those type of movies that have one of the

characters grow to astronomical, you know, 50

foot, you know, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman type

deal. The Amazing Colossal Man. Yeah. That's

essentially what this is. Yeah. And with this

I'm like wait a second tails inhaling chili dogs.

Okay, then I thought that was Sonic's thing But

yeah, I this one was all right I thought I thought

some of the stuff was funny with tails being

the human Food vacuum that he is I mean, I mean

he could almost give wacko a run for his money

Because wacko inhales a whole bunch of food on

animaniacs But this one, there's nothing really

to write home about. So you have a giant fox

and you have a bunch of human -sized hot dog

people walking around. You can't tell me he's

not thinking of picking one of them up and just

going to town. Yeah, but normally hot dogs are

not bony. While sucking the marrow out of life,

you try not to choke on the bone. Oh god, this

one was just too strange for me. Like I said,

I think it's funny that it's Tails doing the

inhaling because it's normally Sonic that we

see doing that, but I don't know. I must have

missed the whole part of the beginning of it

because i did not notice it was so it was a robot

nick ray that actually hit him i just thought

it was that's how the episode started right was

just him inhaling crap but overall i gotta give

this a one and a half yeah i'll give it a one

i actually had to watch it twice because uh in

the middle of watching it i started i accidentally

switched over to my other favorite program which

was uh the back of my eyelids Just was kind of

losing losing interest in it. Yeah, I'll just

I have to give it a one. Yeah, I Mean these episodes

today that you know, they're all right I think

we've kind of gone down in quality From the first

episode to the last episode because you know

You look at our ratings threes three and a half

three threes twos one and a half and then a one

so Obviously, they're going downhill. Hopefully

next next week. They'll go A little bit the other

way. We're gonna take a quick break, come back

with final thoughts and all that good stuff after

this. We are back here on Pixels and the Animation

and it is time to close this one out. So far

watching this series I haven't wanted to rip

all my hair out just yet. It has its... Good

moments and bad moments. It's not all bad, it's

not all good, and it's not even, like, there

really isn't even a middle ground either. It's

either you like something or you cringe at it,

for me. Well, it's better than the other Sonic

show so far, and given what we've had to sit

through this entire podcast, you know, this is,

this isn't a bad way to go out. No. Not at all.

I mean, yeah. No, not at all. Not a bad way to

go out at all. What have you got going on, or

what can people look forward to over there at

Decian? Well, there should be the next part of

my chapter starting up pretty soon. Again, this

episode is in timeline purgatory, so I don't

know what's actually on the site right now. So

just go check it out. If the date is new, then

you should read. And even if it's not new, it

might be new to you anyway. uh... you know uh...

join us next time we'll be talking about tails

and it tells his new home over the hill hero

blank -headed eagle the mystery of the missing

high tops tracing that five times fastens and

so long sucka swear so i think you get sucker
