About this Episode

TFG1Mike and TV’s Mr. Neil review episodes 17 through 19 of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show: "Two Plumbers and a Baby," "The Adventures of Sherlock Mario," and "Do You Princess Toadstool Take This Koopa?" They discuss how the episodes hold up, their live-action segments, and whether they successfully adapted classic stories into Mario-themed adventures.

Hey, Paisanos! It's the Super Mario Bros. Super

Show! Welcome to the latest episode of pixels

in the animation I am one of your host to John

Mike and joining me as always is TV's mr. L.

Oh a podcast just what I needed Exactly Today

we are obviously continuing on with the Super

Mario Brothers Super Show reviews as we talk

about the next three episodes of the Super Show

oh my god it never ends when i saw the title

of the first episode had that movie even come

out yet um i pretty sure i gotta i gotta look

it up because the first episode we'll be talking

about today is two plumbers and a baby which

is basically Uh rehash or uh, oh, I wouldn't

even call it an homage. It's oh boy. Wow That's

a wiki article. I don't want to read. Um, then

basically it homages three men and a baby And

uh, yeah, when did that movie came out in late

87, so uh, yeah by 89. Yeah No, wait what oh

this is there's a tv series wait a minute now

i'm all confused no no the film the film yeah

three men and a baby release date november 25th

1987 okay yeah that's right yeah oh because oh

i see what i did there was an article called

two men and a baby i was like what okay okay

so yeah um very very funny what are the like

i wanted to ask you this last week they often

mention in this cartoon like the ice world and

the desert world and the insert title here world

i i haven't played super mario 2 in a long time

what are the worlds in that game I'm pretty sure

that that's pretty that that's what they are.

It's They they didn't have proper names like

they didn't Mario 3 so you had the desert world

and the ice world and Actually, there were multiple

versions of the desert world and Yeah, and it

was mostly it was mostly kind of an Arabian setting

anyway because the original game of course, but

yeah Yeah, so there was no There was no 7 in

in Mario 2. Yeah, there's a world 7 in Mario

2. It's that's mostly just warts castle and that's

in the sky Yeah. All right. Let's get into today's

episodes Up first today is Two Plumbers and a

Baby is the animated short and the live -action

segment is The Lost Dog. Pam Matheson, who was

the imitation Cher a number of episodes ago,

arrives in tears after losing her dog and asks

Mario and Luigi to help get it back. And they

go through the oh where oh where has my little

dog gone thing. Bad jokes came out of that. The

basic gist of it is that Luigi is practicing

bird calls and by modifying his technique to

dog calls, he was able to bring the dog back.

Which sounds par for the course for Deke's story

line. Especially when you're dealing with something

that's literally only like five or six minutes

for the total story line. Yeah, I know that Obviously

Deke ran this this stuff and everything else,

but I know for a fact because I I watched the

interview with Captain Lou He says on the DVD

set for Super Mario Brothers Super Show volume

1. He says that He and Danny Wells they basically

went to them and said hey What kind of stuff

do you guys want to do? They had a lot of control

in this show as far as the live action segments

go. Yeah. I think they had a lot of fun doing

it. Oh, no, no, no. Yeah, no, they did. They

had tons of fun. And it's great. But us, as the

old men that we are, looking at this nearly 20,

30 years later, almost 30 years, I think. Yeah.

2019 will be the 30th anniversary of the Mario

Brothers Super Show. You know, 20 -25 years later,

it's just... You know how we always say, oh,

well, this show or this movie is extremely dated

or whatever else? Obviously, this is one of those

things where it's going to be extremely dated.

Then again, Where Oh Where Is My Dog Gone is

always classic, so... In the animated feature,

Princess Toadstool falls into Koopa's fountain

of youth and turns into a baby. Mario, Luigi,

and Toad must babysit her until they can get

her back to normal. Obviously, the episode, as

I said before, is based on three men and a baby.

And there's lots of jokes where baby Peach is

getting into all sorts of trouble and the three

boys are chasing after her. I think I've seen

this episode of Popeye before. Yeah. And of course

this predates the actual Baby Peach that shows

up in the peripheral Mario games such as Mario

Kart Wii and stuff like that. Yeah, yeah. This

episode, I had a hard time watching this episode.

I honestly, and I honestly haven't watched it

in a long time, but I remember like, I don't

know, when I was 13, 14, somewhere around there,

93, 94, I had watched Three Men and a Baby again,

and I haven't watched it since then, but even

back then, I kind of got it, but I kind of didn't.

It was one of those things where I was always

one of those advanced children where I got things

more so than some of my friends did. I don't

even think I like that movie. I don't even know

if I go back and watch it now if I'll like it.

Did you see the creepy kid in the window? Yes.

My god. Oh man, this episode. Alright, let's

go ahead and see if we can find some sort of

fire flowers to get powered up. Alright, four

fire flowers. I will say I do like that baby

princess throws the plunger at Koopa. I thought

that was funny. And I do like Koopa's line, I've

been hanging around these kids too long. I do

like that. Other than that, all of the, like...

Toad basically turns into a mother hen. You know

that that parent that no one really wants to

deal with the the strict parents not the fun

parents And yes, we all know we need strict parents

now and then but it's like they do all this comedy

stuff first and like right in the middle when

they're at the river and trying to wash print

baby princess off and she's sitting on the raft

and whatever else and toes like oh no, no, no,

no and I don't know. I know I'm supposed to be

done with good stuff here, but it just I don't

know, what'd you like about this one, anything?

Well, this is gonna be a list of so bad it circles

around good again, so. I have to point out King

Gugugagacupa. A terrible name that is so, it's

like the audacity that they had to even use that

is somehow funny to me. I think the reason why

they use it is because of what happens to him

at the end. Yeah, where he turns into baby Bowser.

Again, a win from the future. I kind of like

that at the end of the story. Well, at the beginning

there were these old people who showed up at

the Fountain of Youth and they got turned into

babies. And then at the very end when they reversed

the Fountain of Youth... They all hop back in

again and they're like, yay, we're old again.

We could stay up late. We learned nothing. I

mean, it was kind of a stupid episode, but it

was stupid in a fun way, I think. Yeah, it kind

of was, but I'm going to steal your line. I'm

just glad it ended. Let's get the gumbus Damn

it. That's two weeks in a row goomba stomping

there are no paper Mario's Say oh there there

was a gamba something in this game though. There

wasn't there was no paper Mario character by

that Let's stop on some Goombas. While Toad is

right about, you know, you need a firm hand as

a parent every now and then, I hate his baby

talk. Oh my god. I literally kid you not, I could

have sworn I felt blood coming out of my ears.

Oh my god. So bad. And I don't mean so bad that

it's good, I mean so god awful. You're telling

me that reversing the pipes makes the potion

reverse? Come on. Yeah. Take it away. Well...

The only thing negative I'm going to say about

this is that it falls victim to Deke's usual

method of scripting everything out and then not

really thinking about how this is going to work

in animation. And I'm referring to the scene

where Baby Peach is on a raft and there are Trouters

munching away at the raft. And she's out there

for a while and the Trouters are just basically

biting away at the same section of would over

and over again and it's like she should have

been fish food by by now and Yeah, it's like

someone someone did not storyboard this and instead

just Did a couple keyframes and sent it overseas

and It it always animates awkwardly when you

do that. So that's that's basically my whole

thing Yeah I will say and I will say this throughout

the entire lifespan of the show when it comes

to the sound effects There's not a bad sound

effect in any of the cartoons we'll be we'll

be talking about because that's basically the

game effects and It's just so awesome hearing

them. It really is It's just very very cool that

they were able to incorporate those But yeah,

this this episode just needs to go away forever

Let's move on. Up next is Plumbers of the Year

in live -action and the adventures of Sherlock

Mario. Grand Pooba of plumbing played by Marty

Allen arrives to announce Mario and Luigi have

been elected plumbers of the year but leaks in

the plumbing caused him to want to change his

mind. The whole time I was watching these two

segments I'm thinking I know the first part of

the segment I knew. Something was going to go

wrong like this is Mario and Luigi here. This

is Mario Mario and Luigi Mario here There's no

way the Mario brothers are going to get plumber

of the year. I disavow that surname Which I really

surprised at the angry video game nerd in his

thing did not even reference this when actually

it's funny that we were the first People might

have known about Mario Mario Luigi Mario, but

I don't know if they knew if it came that it

came from this cartoon or this this show with

the live -action stuff, but I thought the live

-action things funny I thought it was kind of

cool. What about you on the live -action? It

was funny. I mean it was nothing really special,

but it was I Like the fact that they were fixing

the plumbing in their own house Yeah, it was

like it's not like you were doing a job. It was

like Our own plumbing sucks. We have to fix this.

Yeah, and in the end they they fix it with a

pizza. Oh Yeah So let me ask you were there copyright

laws or something or was there copyright infringement

on some character names because in the animated

cartoon Mario becomes a detective to find the

missing her lock souls Um, I know that Sherlock

Holmes was copyrighted at one point because it

was it was created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

who also wrote The Lost World Right. So I don't

know if Sherlock Holmes is in public domain yet.

He might be So Marios defines Herlock Psalms

and to stop Koopa from flooding the city of Victoria

featured song I spy theme by Earl Hagan Can this

episode just be over already Like this is my

like this episode in the last episode or my moments

of like you said before I liked it when it ended.

It just... God. And the whole thing, when you

find Sirlock Holmes, or Herlock Holmes, or whatever

the hell like, dude's stupid name is... Or the...

How does he say it? Coopardy? Yeah, Coopiarity.

Yeah. Which is supposed to be like Moriarty,

and I'm like, wait a minute, he's adding an extra

syllable in there. Yeah. That's Honestly ladies

and gentlemen, this is one of those episodes

where neither one of us have any fire flowers

So we're just gonna move straight on into goombas

You're a cross between a lizard and an inferior

species of toad. Your brain is smaller than a

peanut. You got the lowest grades in your school

and hold the world record for flanking kindergarten

the most times. When you were little, the other

Coopers nicknamed you lizard lips and never let

you play with them. You were a naughty, lily

-livered bully boy and worked the bed until you

were twelve. Gee, he knows you pretty good, boss.

We are stomping on some Goombas. Professor Koopa

Artie. Yeah, not Koopa Artie. I don't even know

yet. No, no. And this episode is a huge insult

to the Sherlock Holmes franchise. It's not even

homaging. It is basically making fun of it. And

the ending was lame as hell. The ending of the

cartoon was Mario looking into something that

is a cage for an animal thinking there's food

in - Oh my god. I don't wanna - I know what you're

talking about. I wanna bash these - these creators

over the fucking head with the - the food stuff.

Oh my god. What don't you like about this one?

Oh I Know it's gonna sound lame or pretty much

the whole thing. I mean it just goes to the motions

You know, it starts with with a food joke, you

know this this vlog is so is as thick as soup

and Mario's like what food, you know that joke

I've seen Garfield and What was the plot even

it was something about? Mario Mario was Sent

out to find Sherlock Sherlock Holmes god damn

it. That's what guys fucking name is I don't

care what they reverse letter Sherlock Holmes

Mario becomes a detective to find him and he

also must stop Cuba from flooding the city of

Victoria with the so retro router which I think

is Yeah yeah the retro router no even didn't

even know what wireless technology was back then

you'd have to you know jump into the grid and

find Tron to find out what wireless technology

is oh god this yeah we're just gonna move on

to the Final episode of the day. Okay. Well,

I do have to say that I thought the the painting

of the Tower of Victoria was kind of funny Just

because it was like crooked as hell Leaning Tower

of Victoria. Yeah, it was like who drew that

a Two -year -old could have done a better job

All right, we're gonna move on Do you princess

told still take this Koopa is our final episode

of this podcast episode. Oh boy I Will say already

that this was 20 ,000 times better than the previous

two episodes we've talked about So this the animated

one in order to free the Super Mario Brothers

and the mushroom people princess told still agrees

to marry koopa which would make him the legal

ruler of the mushroom kingdom featured song oh

god again oh i wish the songs weren't cut out

can you guess what the featured song i know what

it is it's white wedding oh you bastard i have

the mario wiki opened i i can't help not supposed

to cheat uh yeah that would have i remember watching

this episode uh... yet the the overall plot like

this is so far in the four episodes of pixels

animation we've done the four so the podcast

out of the episode review reviews proper not

counting it was a zero this is the first episode

that actually has a good Decent almost bordering

on amazing story like it actually has a beginning

middle and end where it's not so contrived It's

not yes the whole oh, I'll marry you if you promise

to do yes that that is a plot that has been used

throughout time, but At least they're not trying

to homage something or put the Mario Brothers

into a story, you know It's no Mario and the

Beanstalk, you know, it's no Koopa coupacula

whatever the hell the vampire episode was last

week you know at least it's it's good in that

way with the live -action segment though mario

hillbillies mario luigi's hillbilly cousins make

themselves too much at home i will say at least

they're not in drag and at least there's a woman

there that is not them either one of them in

drag So that's a good thing Yeah, and the the

guest is Donna Douglas who actually was Ellie

May Clampett on the Beverly Hillbillies And even

at this point she looked like about ten miles

of bad road The cartoon plot, it was so refreshing

after watching the previous two episodes, at

least for me. What did you think of the plot

overall for the cartoon? Well, it seemed like

this should have been the season ender, because

it actually takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom.

It deals with something that's actually relevant

to the video game, where Koopa has Princess Toadstool

captured, and it's up to the Mario Brothers to

save her from Koopa. you know golly gee this

should have been like the last episode and for

some reason it wasn't and It seemed like they

had even read the manual because Koopa had his

wand and he was turning the mushroom people into

blocks and it actually says that in the in the

in the game manual that although all the The

reason why there are coins and power -ups in

the blocks is because the mushroom people can

turn to blocks So, wait, you mean the manual

for Mario 2 or Mario 3? This is in the manual

to Super Mario Bros. 1. Huh? Yep. Oh, yeah, that's

right. Koopa did have... Wait, no. But, you know

what? He didn't have a wand in the first game.

That's from Mario 3. Yeah, no, I know that, but...

I could have sworn he was, like, I know Bowser

in Mario 1, he spits fire, but I could have sworn

there was also, maybe I'm thinking of the axe

drawbridge to lower him into the lava, I don't

know. I could have sworn there was something

else there, but yeah. No, I love, I absolutely

adore this plot. I thought this was a great story

for them to do. But yeah, you're right it could

have been a a season ender that would have been

Interesting how they would have done that that

would have been kind of cool. So let's get to

the fire flowers I like the animation. I know

this is silly, but I do like the animation on

Koopa when he's in the jacket. I thought that

was hilarious and the button pops off. I like

that. I can't single any one thing out here.

I just enjoyed the episode overall. It was whole

much more enjoyable than the previous two we've

talked about today, as I said before. I do like

how Mario seems to think he has ESP. Extra sensory

plumberage or plumbering because oh, I'm gonna

do I'll dig us out Luigi I'll get us out here

in no time first hole they run into two Koopa

troopas Second hole they're completely outside

the castle, which is good, but then they see

Koopa going back on his word What do you like

about this one? Well the segment you just mentioned

it kind of reminds me of that old Tex Avery cartoon

without the guy trying to dig out of prison and

he's got the spoon. At one point he digs up inside

the warden's office. The first thing I gotta

mention is Koopa's mom, who's stacked like Dolly

Parton. The only reason why she was invited is

because Koopa couldn't think of any friends that

he had. That and she'll come for the cake. And

she was just basically the the typical overbearing

mother -in -law character Yeah, and you notice

she's basically a female voice for Bowser. Yeah

It's the it's it's it's Koopa's voice, but it's

that there's a female Somehow they Get like some

high pitch voice like this Kind of thing. Oh

my throat but no, I love that. I thought that

was great because Because you have Princess Toadstool

just there, just like, oh, what am I getting

myself into? And the mother -in -law says, ah,

she's overjoyed. Look at her face. She's smiling.

She's ready for this. Oh, god. And again, another

episode where they comment on marriage. Obviously,

the whole point of this was for her to marry

Koopa, but the other one, love him or leave him.

And Mario made the comment. of marriage institute.

So another one where they're commenting on the

institution of marriage. That was cool. Anything

else you liked about this one? Just that it was

an actual Mario plot that had something to do

with the games. That was like amazing for this

cartoon. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Alright, we're gonna

go stomp on some goombas which they actually

appear At least in this episode. I know you said

they came up earlier, but I didn't see them in

the earlier episodes so We will head to some

goomba stomping times So let's stomp on some

goombas Seriously, did they think he was gonna

actually keep his word? Come on Once hold the

fuck up once weren't used until Super Mario 3

what? Well, there's been a little bit of Super

Mario 3 leaking into the show. I've noticed yeah

a lot and I don't understand how that could happen

because Mario 3 didn't come out until what? No,

it came out the following February Again put

on the nerd hat here Super Mario 3 came out in

Japan a month either a month before or a month

after Super Mario 2 came out in America so The

game actually existed at the time that this cartoon

was airing Interesting very interesting Yeah

North America actually no like well Yeah, you're

right. It was out in 1988 in Japan in North America.

Yeah, February 12th 90 so a year later I Had

I don't know 1990 was a weird year for me. That

was one of those years. I kind of just blends

together Never can remember crap, but But yeah,

no, there is that. And let's see, what else?

Oh crap. I'm just doing a whole bunch of crap

here. All right. What is that? Plumbers second.

Yeah. The plumber's second best skill is digging.

Seriously? I guess. I mean, if you're laying

pipe. Yeah, I could kind of see that. but What

they did with it here I Don't know what didn't

you like about this one. Um, just the usual deep

way of scripting and not storyboarding the part

of the episode where they're being crushed it

between the two walls and It seemed to not coordinate

very well. It was like Mario is about to get

squished and yet there's there's tons of room

left for Luigi and um and Peach and Bowser are

talking for a really long time while Mario and

Luigi should have been crushed a long time ago

and it was Deke does this throughout a lot of

the the cartoons It's like as much as inspector

gadget was like the best that Deke ever produced

It was like everything good about Deke wrapped

into one show Super Mario Brothers Super Show

was like everything bad about deep and it just

so happens that this particular Episode is one

of the better ones, but it still had like a lot

of their walkiness I will say when the the crushed

walls the walls closing in on them I could have

sworn as they were moving and I saw Tetris blocks

Yeah, it was a little bit Tetris II it yeah,

it looked a lot like Like some of the Tetris

blocks we're gonna get in later years. Alright,

we're gonna take a quick break. You're gonna

hear some ads and we'll come back with our final

ratings and final thoughts and close the show.

Super Show! We are back. Let's go ahead and get

the ratings out of the way. Two plumbers and

a baby, sir. What's it get? It's gonna get a

one star. I mean, it had its funny moments, but

it was funny for being bad, so I can't score

too high. No stars for me. My first zero stars

this episode. Oh my god. This episode is so fucking

bad. So bad. The Adventures of Sherlock Mario,

what do you give it? Zero stars. This needs to

be a lost level and it needs to stay lost. Same

here, zero stars. No way in hell this should

ever be seen ever again. Oh my god. Take the

bulk eraser to it and just wipe it clean. Yeah,

pretty much. Alright, do you Princess Toadstool

take this? Koopa, what do you give it? I'll give

it a solid three stars. I reserved the four star

rating just because I want to save that for really

good episodes such as episodes of Captain N and

I can't in good faith give a four star to a Super

Mario episode. So three stars is probably going

to be the highest I ever give to a Super Mario

cartoon and this one gets three stars. Compared

to how depressed I was and how let down I was

with the previous two episodes Ladies and gentlemen

wait to hear an explosion in the Chicagoland

area because this is gonna break break Neil's

brain I'm giving this five stars Wow There are

yes. I agree. There are some bad points about

it But overall compared to the other episodes

we had to watch for this podcast. This is so

much better than Either one of them combined

and for me Do you princess take this Koopa gets

a five -star rating for me? I'm not saying that

I'm gonna use the five -star all the time I'm

just saying like five star man for this episode

compared to the other two and How much I enjoyed

the fact they actually attempted at a story without

inserting Mario into a tail It was just so much

better So much better done All right, so with

that out of the way There are and I am gonna

fuck this up and have to edit this nice They
