About this Episode

The hosts discuss the impact of social media engagement features, the removal of fan community sites from Lucasfilm's web portal, and their frustrations with the DC Universe streaming service app. They also compare hardware preferences for smartphone upgrades and debate the merits of the PlayStation Classic console alongside the evolution of graphical art styles in gaming.

Neil Ross here and it's time to get altered and

get geeky on Altered Geek with Steve Megatron.

Hello and welcome to Altered Geek, the podcast

that's ever evolving and altering your geekdom.

We discuss anything from television, film, to

gaming, streaming, technology, and simply put,

things we geek out to. I'm your host, Steve Megatron

Phillips, as Neil Ross had mentioned in the intro,

and as always, thank you for tuning in. You can

get ahold of the podcast and interact in the

following ways by contacting us on Facebook,

Twitter, and the website post. Preferably the

website post, but if not, it's at alter geek

and myself is at scp21 and Twitter So without

further ado, we're gonna jump right into We're

gonna go to hot topics of the net So on hot topics

of the net there's only a couple of articles

that I thought were worth mentioning. One of

them is Twitter is planning to remove the like

tool in a bid to improve the quote -unquote quality

of debate. So what does that mean? It means they're

going to basically just take the like button

away. More or less in how they they replaced

in 2015 the favorites a star -shaped button that

allowed people to Bookmark tweets to read later

similar usage was the like to show appreciation

of people's status updates pictures and videos,

which is why you see the The the retweet or like

does not equal endorsements But They're suggesting

it says psychologists are suggesting that they

may be causing social media addiction Which which

is It's just all kinds of crazy when you think

about it But it's it's kind of an odd movement

To take that away So they're basically saying

though is that it's created this this crave of

media addiction to like other people's comments.

It says, but it's led to a trend where young

people will tweet or share something on Instagram

and Facebook, but will delete it if they have

not received enough likes shortly after. Which,

why? But it goes on to mention how there's no

specific timeline for the changes, or particularly

planned changes to discuss, but they're experimenting,

considering numerous possible changes with an

eye. toward ensuring incentivizing the right

behaviors to drive healthy conversation. So,

yeah, they're trying to create all these basically

healthier places by reducing echo chambers and

cracking down on misinformation and all this

other, which really has nothing to do with it.

They have hinted that they will be bringing in

an option to edit tweets, which is long overdue.

And then change the verification process so that

a blue tick is no longer a Preserve for celebrities

and influencers and it could change how users

follower counts are displayed which I'm not quite

sure what that means, but Yeah, it's it's a little

strange That they would decide to just take away

likes all of a sudden but Yeah, we'll see what

happens It's it's it's an ever -evolving changing

market on social media. So the other thing is,

which I wasn't aware of, but Lucasfilm deleted

the fan area, the fan collecting and podcasting

site section from StarWars .com, which had like

the fan news and blog sites area, which Lucasfilm

has had, you know, a long, long history of working

very closely with fan community from the early

days of like internet and social media and everything

else because as far back as I can remember things

were on there about it and I remember when like

Troops was a thing and you know all those little

fan films and whatnot but yeah they've completely

removed this section from the website which is

where they listed news sites and collecting sites

and podcasts And yeah, it's completely gone,

which I think is a little bit odd to do. But

this is in its place. They have this statement

where the sites were previously listed. This

is Lucasfilm Limited. strives to foster an inclusive,

diverse, and safe environment for our fans and

we ask the same of our fan community. Fan organizations,

websites, blogs, clubs, podcasts, social media

accounts, etc. are not owned, endorsed, sponsored,

controlled, or in any way affiliated with Lucasfilm

or the Walt Disney Company and do not necessarily

reflect the views or opinions of Lucasfilm Ltd.

The Walt Disney Company or any of their affiliates

and no warranty expressed or implied is made

regarding accuracy, adequacy, Completeness, legality,

reliability, or usefulness of any information,

please see terms of our use, agreements, and

privacy policies, blah blah blah blah blah. Yeah,

so it's also worth noting that fan organizations

like the 501st and other things are still listed.

So yeah, it says that basically many fan and

collecting sites were proud to be listed there

as fans get news and updates on various things

from these. or just talk Star Wars. It's rather

unfortunate that this has happened, but a lot

of the toxicity surrounding the Last Jedi hit

and the anger associated with it created this

stigma between Star Wars and the fandom, and

so in turn Star Wars... because a lot of YouTube

channels, some that were listed on that page,

have turned into a very hateful and damaging

place to discuss Star Wars. So rather than have

to vet all of these different places that are

listed, they just were like, you know what, it

can all go away. So yeah, it sucks, but it's

rather unfortunate. And to be honest, the Star

Trek fandom has always gotten shafted in that

department, especially recently. with the fan

films and then anything that has to do with with

Trek in general like they don't really want any

ties with any third -party Trek organizations

and so like not even fan clubs like there's there's

nothing official and so like Star Wars is kind

of distancing themselves doing the same exact

thing and while it's unfortunate it's just a

company covering their butt which is kind of

what happens nowadays. And then the other thing

is CBS has decided in their infinite wisdom for

their All Access app to launch an ad -supported

E .T. Live, Entertainment Tonight Live, which

is its latest streaming entry because they're

kind of doubling down on their exclusive content.

for CBS All Access. So this new iteration of

ET Live will have a different set and on -air

talent roster from the Mothership syndicated

show, a mainstay for nearly four decades. So

the new streaming service is available via Apple

TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android, and iOS devices.

So anyways, they're gonna have more distribution

partners later, but... that they, I guess they

had some new teaser of it over the summer for

investors and Greenlit. And so yeah, it's gonna

be on All Access and Showtime and whatnot. So

we'll see how it goes. I kind of think that having

a 24 hour kind of run thing is kind of odd, but

I guess they didn't feel like we got enough ET

information. So they're gonna turn it into its

own thing So yeah that there's that I have no

idea who any of the people are on it I just thought

it was kind of interesting that it's still a

thing or trying to Do something in that that

realm anyhow? And then of course There's the

news that YouTube's head of music warns that

the European Union's Article 13 is detrimental

to remixes and fan videos. I guess Lyra Cohen

is the most recent YouTube executive to speak

out about it, stating that their controversial

copyright directive and the effect it will have

on the music industry or community. They said

that let me be clear, we understand and support

the intent of Article 13. We need effective ways

for copyright holders to protect their content,

but we believe that the current proposal will

create severe unintended consequences for the

whole industry. We still have a couple of weeks

to work toward a better final version of the

law. The music industry should really pay attention

to these unintended consequences. The system

that largely contributes to their success is

at risk of major change in the European Union.

because Article 13 is a heftier copyright filter

that will make it difficult for creators to borrow

content and remix it. Unlike current Safe Harbor

rules that put the onus of copyright infringement

on the creator of the video, the EU's new copyright

directive would make YouTube solely responsible

for ensuring copyright -protected material. wasn't

infringed upon. So the creator community and

the company itself would be hit pretty hard by

the directive if it's voted in this upcoming

January. I could see that this getting very bad

repercussions for fair use purposes. It's going

to come down to the point where nothing is able

to be used anymore unless you create it yourself

and then even then it's going to be a They're

gonna really screw people is what it's gonna

come down to like I get it like they want the

music industry and the people associated with

it to make their money and They should be able

to make their money that being said They're saying

that Like Paul McCartney and more than other

1 ,300 other members of the recording arts community

published an open letter asking the EU to back

the proposed changes to the directive saying

we need an internet that is fair and sustainable

for all, but today some user upload content platforms

refuse to compensate artists and all music creators

fairly for their work while they exploit it for

their own profit. Which that would be like me

uploading like Metallica song on my YouTube channel

and trying to monetize it. Like yeah, that I

can get. But I guess YouTube also launched a

standalone website dedicated to informing people

about this whole situation. And their Twitter

account has also been more aggressive about the

directive tweeting about its possible effect

in the creator community. I don't know, I see

bad repercussions coming down the trickle -down

effect of this whole thing in the near future.

So, I guess we'll see. We'll see how it goes.

So, without further ado, gonna jump over to the

feature presentation with myself and Mike Booth

Ninja Powers. And now our feature presentation

Hello and welcome to alter geek I'm your host

Steve Megatron Phillips and returning is Mike

booth ninja powers. Hello Glad to be back. I

am Then if that all possible I think I can I'm

in a spa right now where I can make it a recurring

a recurring thing if need be Or if our listeners

would like that Especially given that I have

I do not work on Wednesday Thursday or Friday

so I can record on Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday

nice So yeah, I can that's my that's my availability

For the time being at least through November,

so I don't know how many other episodes they

can show up on There's always pre recording there

is that So yeah, we could see where it goes,

but I was looking forward to it. I think you

asked me last week, so I've been kind of looking

forward to this. And I'm just glad I finally

got to a spot where it's like, yeah, I can actually

do this. I can actually enjoy it and not come

home from work and be beat or have to get up

in the morning to be able to do it. Yeah, definitely

glad to have you back on the show. I've been

trying to schedule people with a couple weeks

notice just so that, one, I'm not without a co

-host and then two, so that people get ample

notice instead of, hey, what are you doing tomorrow?

Which is what I was doing for a little bit. Sometimes

flying by your studio pants with a podcast can

be kind of fun. I know when I did mine, I mean

I had I had a set I had set co -hosts, but we

never knew what we were talking about when we

sat down and hit the record button I Mean that's

that's as much winging it as we did so that's

almost what we did with myself and DJ Valentine

from simplistic reviews he he and I had scheduled

a call weeks in advance and then we go to sit

down and converse and I literally like the episode

starts off with him for the for that segment

of the show just us talking like hello and he's

like hey it was literally from the minute we

picked up the call and then it just kind of spitballed

from there to all the other directions that it

went yeah those can be the best especially if

you can make them work into an episode where

someone actually introduces everybody. Yeah,

it did. It was a lot of fun because we were just

kind of screwed around doing because like they

do a lot of scripted podcast skits. OK. And I've

been a as of late, like a recurring character

voice on some of the skits. And so I was like,

you know, that would be kind of fun to talk about.

Well, that's cool. Yeah, so I've done like Scotty

over on from Star Trek because they redid the

wrath of Khan were Spock dies and They they played

a clip of Blade Runner that they redid on their

own I wasn't in that but it was quite hilarious

to listen to Because they just started having

the replicant at the end of the movie I forget

the actor's name, but They had him just kind

of saying all kinds of just random weird stuff

And and the guy that was doing the voice just

sounded real authentic, but it sounded so absurd

What was he doing? Sorry? Was he doing Harrison

Ford? No, he was doing the the replicant from

the the original Blade Runner Okay at the end

I can't remember the guy's name, but he was the

replator is Play your friends one of those movies

that I've seen, but I don't think I've seen the

movie that everyone's like, over the moon about.

Yeah, I mean, I'm not a big fan of the series.

So I don't remember that movie too well, so.

I watched it just before seeing 2049. You know

what, and I, so that was, like I said, it's one

of those movies I don't think I've seen it. And

I've tried to watch it a number of times. I've

tried watching all the different versions. And

I never made it all the way through the movie

until, I think it was this past spring, right

before 2049 came out on home video, I watched,

I think it was the director's cut of Blade Runner.

And still, I'm not saying that the movie is in

any way bad, and I definitely did get what it

did for the genre and for cinema as a whole.

I didn't I still don't feel like I saw the movie

that Everybody's clamoring over Everyone's like

hyped over and I don't feel like or not hyped

over but everyone yeah clamoring over and I don't

feel like I've seen the movie that is like Like

when they when someone shows you a picture of

Blade Runner like I don't feel like I saw those

scenes like I That's the best way I can explain.

It's just I don't think I saw the movie that

everyone else did which is probably the same

way as Same way, another way of saying that the

movie didn't impact me the way it did other people.

But just like with certain video game franchises,

like I said, I totally get what I did for cinema

and for the genre. So I don't and I don't think

it was a bad movie. It's just. I didn't get it.

I guess is the way one of the best ways I can

think to describe that. Yeah, I can I can totally

get that to I. Yeah, I get what it did, but I

just I can't I Can't get into it the same way

that that everybody else did I actually found

myself Fast -forwarding through like I wonder

if it's just I wonder if it's just because we're

on the other side of it And we've been through

what came after it so it's not like revisiting

it after you been on this side of the picket

fence, if you will. While it holds its own, it's

definitely like the grandfather. So you're kind

of like, oh, OK, I get it. So you mean like Batman

1989, and then we get what we get now? Yeah,

kind of. I mean. Don't I mean I think I would

part of me just want really wanted to jump to

The first Superman movie What was that 78 I Think

so yeah, okay good. You're saying I think so

so I don't feel so bad about taking a guess at

Superman 78 But I you know yeah, it's kind of

like you you like I Understand that movie like

I get I get the appeal of that movie and seeing

that movie for like the first time But were all

like superhero movies that I've seen came out

post that So I don't see it as the and I saw

all these other movies before I saw that and

and I and I did see I remember seeing superman

like as a kid, but I don't remember it that fondly,

you know, I didn't I probably wasn't paying attention

to cinema in the same way then because like Do

you know the movie the never -ending story? Yep.

Okay, you know, you probably know this then that

movie is only 90 minutes long But when I was

a kid that movie was literally never ended. Yep

So like it's it's that kind of like you have

this whole warped perception of reality and there's

a number of movies I haven't gone back to revisit

But in Superman being one of those and I haven't

seen I Don't think I've seen the 89 Batman In

18 years the last time I watched it was when

we recorded the M wire episode And I'm not saying

like you couldn't go back and enjoy those movies

But I like I said, I think you know like like

I've been saying we're on the other side of what

those movies did and we've been reveling in that

and So it's for me, especially for me the type

of person that I am it's hard for me to go back

and watch those things and appreciate them the

way that somebody would have if it had been if

he had watched them, you know, like When It's

like trying to show someone Iron Man that just

saw Avengers or like Infinity War. Mm -hmm. Like

it might not Iron Man might not be viewed the

same way like it doesn't make it a bad movie

just It just doesn't resonate the same way. Yeah,

it's not like, it's not like the first, it's

not like when we went to go, I feel like the

way that people feel about Superman in 78 or

like maybe even to a lesser, more extent, maybe

even the 89 Batman is the way that some of us

felt going in and watching Iron Man in 2008.

We're like, what? This is, this is amazing. And

then it's like, you know, we're in it. We're

in that. We're in that cycle that if we were

to show our kids these movies, they're not going

to get it because they're going to be watching

literal superheroes on screen someday, you know,

like if things keep going the way that they are

with special effects and whatnot. So. Yeah, I

can definitely see that, though. So you were

doing voice work. Yeah, I so I did I did some

stuff for them. uh between that and i did they

they had like for their hundredth episode they

uh um wanted like an announcer to to do like

a fake uh award ceremony type thing and i i did

uh a really warped version of casey casum okay

and did that and then they they were doing uh

you know like disney bought all these extra companies

and uh So they were joking on the whole, you

know, buying Fox and had, you know, the only

way that you can make Muppets better is by mixing

it with franchises. So they mixed it with Die

Hard. So like John McClane is Kermit the Frog.

And I did the voice for that too. So he's like,

yippee ki yay mother. You know, except I did

the yay. type thing in the clip and he'd stated

how that was really funny. So I did a few other

things, like I did a cover commander in another

one and something else, but we recorded a recent

episode on Geek Responsibly, it was a crossover

between their podcast and Geekcast Radio with

Blanchard and We joked that I should record Dr.

Seuss books in character voices Okay, so that's

what's been going on in your Twitter feed yeah

so They were like they're like you have to do

it and so they just started throwing out book

names after the recording and I was like, okay,

so I had to record green eggs and ham Redfish

Bluefish and How the Grinch Stole Christmas and

So I chose different voices for each one and

Blanchard's like you have to do Redfish Bluefish

as the Joker and I was like, okay So I did that

and I made the mistake of doing it really early

in the morning and so I'm doing like the Mark

Hamill and I'm doing like the the throat ripping

voice thing and I tore up my throat for the rest

of the day so I attempted to record the other

clips for the episode and they sounded horrible

so I was I had to wait until like Monday to record

them all and I found a a time or no it was I

think it was Sunday night yeah Sunday night and

so I recorded that and finished it off and It

went a lot better that time, but it was just

yeah, it was a lot of fun And I think I'll be

doing it again for Christmas time, but Not sure

how it's gonna resonate yet Well, I'm sure it

was fun yeah, so now we're now we're joking like

behind the scenes of you know How it would be

funny to do like a Basically a patreon type show

or something or like a subscription based show

that we just have a bunch of scripted content

Being sarcastic, you know Kind of akin to some

of the stuff that you know, we were talking to

you about or talking about previously of On that

that same note so yeah. Yeah. No, I know you're

talking about but You know, even if it was just,

you know, short 20 minute episodes just kind

of being absurd and all over the place and the

scripting and various characters and seeing what

all impressions I can do. Well, no, it's nice

that you have something that like stresses your

talent. I wish I could get back into the creative

mindset of something, but right now I'm just

kind of coasting through life. It's kind of the

same boat here Yeah, but at least you're like

trying to create stuff. I can't even sit down

to like try to create anything and I'm like I

Don't know I was kicking around like a podcast

idea with Joe Reed Like two months ago and nothing

came of that At least not yet. Anyways, cuz like

like I said on the episode 300 and then now like

I'm still trying to You know work through work

out a schedule where I've got you know, I've

got my me time and work. And I'm getting there.

I'm getting a lot closer than I've been in a

couple of years now. So I'm hoping to be able

to do something because I have a lot of creative

processing power at my disposal and I'm not doing

anything with any of it. Yeah, I can definitely

relate. I've actually got my own green screen

now. I saw that too. Have you had to use it?

I'm trying to get that new... I keep trying to

pull the trigger on that new blue, the mini Yeti

from Blue. Because it just looks cool. And I

don't personally need the big one that I used

to have or the one that you have. I did I did

notice surprisingly I I'm wondering if the the

Full -size Yeti will get an update, but I did

notice the Yeti mini has the same Recording specs

as the what is it the the Yeti Pro or whatever

they call it. Yep So that's that's pretty neat.

So I'm wondering if the actual Yeti will get

either upgraded or just replaced by the mini

altogether Like a future hardware revision, but

I also noticed they don't make the microphone

that I use now anymore, which is the messy which

That's a I like I like that microphone. I'm not

using it now I'm just using them the microphone

that's in my MacBook because well, I'm lazy and

I wanted to sit on the couch See that's the difference

between a PC microphone in a Mac microphone is

The Mac microphones actually quality Maybe Maybe,

we haven't heard this on the other side yet,

but I have recorded a couple of episodes with

you using just the microphone and the Mac. Yet

I've not noticed the difference. I've looked

at that, but I actually want to get more of a

portable microphone that I could plug in or use

through my phone. That's it's more like compact

to carry because yeah, the Yeti is like it's

a behemoth if you've got a cart it somewhere

Yeah, I looked at there. The other one I was

looking at was the raspberry Which is their teeny

tiny one for recording on the go That was one

that I was looking at there's also I Think I

think it's just the raspberry was the one that

I was looking at Think that's their newest one

the raspberry. Yeah. Yeah, I want to say that

it's the the newest one And it's more of a studio

Microphone Basically is kind of what they're

they're touting it as it's like a podcaster But

you kind of tell all of their stuff is podcaster

stuff now. Yeah pretty much Although they sell

it with a software called studio Yep for you

know $20 more See I would be willing to use any

of that software If it again, I don't know though,

I don't know if you've looked into or not But

if it if it would pull in audio from other sources

Or if it's still all had to be local recordings,

you know, cuz that's like the holy grail, right?

Yeah, the thing that captures and that When I

when I first started Podcasting GarageBand on

that Mac was really good for creating podcasts

because they had a lot of nifty features built

into it where if I started a Like a yeah, you

went if you went into an instant message chat

and you started like a phone call like a Voip

call through their instant messenger It and then

you launch GarageBand you click record it would

put everybody on that group chat into their own

track In in GarageBand like automatically it's

just like hey you're you're recording from or

you're you're doing this thing in this in Good

messages. Do you want to? record this and you

say yes, and there goes like covering people

you have there goes six tracks and Everyone's

got their own thing and I've never been able

to recapture that The the best I've been able

to do is here's all the incoming audio from Skype

And then record mine on a separate track That's

the best. That's the best I've been able to get

hmm, so Yeah, I'm I Mean I'm using Adobe Audition

for the most part and I use like mp3 Skype recorder

and if the funny thing is is If you record it

in stereo mode, it actually separates people

onto different tracks. Which I didn't know to

begin with. Most of the time I do it on mono

just because I don't want to mess with trying

to normalize everything onto one line for headphone

purposes. But it's an option. that I can use

if I so choose. Yeah, as far as like some of

the microphones, like I've looked at some of

the portable ones. They they have like the the

mickey digital, which only works with iPhone.

Yep. Which I wish it worked with Android. The

funny thing is, is my Yeti, I can plug that into

my Android phone and use it. Yeah, even though

they they say that they don't support Android

if you take any of the ones that plug into that

that micro USB port and then have have a Adapter

that that can convert the other end into what

you need it for for your phone It will you can

use it as a recording Microphone in your phone

automatically chooses it. I think the other one

I was looking at was the snowflake I've looked

at that one in the past. It's just tiny and portable.

Yeah, it's tiny and portable. The Yeti Nano is

portable. The Raspberry is portable. And then,

yeah, the Snowflake. I've thought about it. I

started with the Snowball. Oh, the Snowflake.

Yeah. No, the Snowflake's cool. I started with

the Snowball. That was my first Blue Mike. My

my friends call it the thermal detonator Because

it looks like one yes, it does yes, it does So

yeah, I'd like to get my hands on the if I ever

had to replace it my yeti I would probably either

get the the yeti nano or I would get the the

raspberry Yeah, I have to look more into that

into that raspberry although I like I said I

just I think the nano looks cute I like I like

what it looks like. So I like that. It's more

compact. It's it's just shorter And it doesn't

have like the same Aesthetic to it. It looks

like you could probably use the raspberry with

any phone you wanted Yeah, any of the ones that

have the the micro USB plug on them you can yeah

there yeah pretty much use it on your your device

and that's that's kind of the the whole thing

with it that I would want to use it for. It looks

like though, I'm trying to read on the Raspberry,

but it looks like it has the USB -C plug -in

on the side almost. I don't know though. I don't,

yeah I don't. I don't know yet either. So I'd

be interested to do more research on that. I

know that it's supposed they're they're compatible

with everything iOS and PC and Mac. They never

say for for Android, which is funny. They're

like, if it works for it, let us know. Yeah,

like I'll be sure to do that. This is what I'm

talking about. Like I have all I have all the

materials to create. Like. Everything you know,

and I don't do anything with it, which guess

You know, it's I just I just don't do anything

with it with anybody told my wife today Maybe

spin this out into something else here real quick

the Apple unveiled their their new lineup for

their iPads and I I had had this thought for

probably about the last year and a half at least

since I bought my last MacBook that I And I think

I'm pretty much done buying full -fledged computers.

I have a high -end MacBook from 2012, and I have

a high -end MacBook from 2016, and I don't do

anything with them except for order pizza. We

get it out every Sunday, and we order pizza,

and then it goes back in the entertainment center,

and it's like, I could... I could do this from

my iPad, you know, or an iPad. And if the iPads

that they've announced today are close to as

powerful as, you know, they make them out to

be, which they're not going to be more powerful

than my MacBook Pro. I know that. And or like

probably not even my 2012 MacBook. But if they're

as versatile as they seem to be, which they've

been going that way, I don't I don't see any

reason for it to not be true. Like I I just don't

see myself buying another Mac, like a full -fledged

Mac. It's all going to be iOS devices from here

on out. I cannot get past that. I don't know

if you've seen it yet, but I can't get past the

all -screen display. It's just the display because

they went with the edge -to -edge display because

they got rid of the home button and it doesn't

have a notch. Thank God it doesn't have a notch.

Because that would just be dumb on an iPad. But

it's, in my opinion, and I saw this somewhere

else too, I think it's like the purest realization

of what the iPad was supposed to be from the

beginning. Just like I think the new Apple Watch

that I got is also the same. It's the it's the

it's what the the Apple Watch was always meant

to be. And even now after having I didn't talk

about it on the last episode I was on I had it

but I didn't want to derail the conversation

like I have the iPhone XS Max which name aside

being dumb I actually am quite happy with the

phone. I know last October when Apple unveiled

the iPhone X I was on another podcast with you

and I was blasting them for its design and and

whatnot. And I still stand by what I said. I

still think that if Steve Jobs was alive, the

notch would not be a thing. But it is. But like

a lot of people said at the time, it goes away.

It stops being something that you notice when

you use it, because that area of the phone is

pretty much dead space anyways. It's where they

put your carrier logos and your Wi -Fi signal

and your cell signal. So it's not you're not

you're not missing out on anything You don't

notice it unless you tip it sideways and you're

watching video or something, but I don't watch

video on my phone I don't I don't play games

on my phone either like I don't use a smartphone

the way that most of the population uses a smartphone

But that said I do there's a number of things

that I do like about it I I think my favorite

thing though is the the FaceTime for unlocking

the phone Just so I don't like using things when

they get in my way And the example I'm going

to use here to explain this is like security

and privacy alright, so on the first iPhone on

every iPhone you've always been able to put in

like a passcode or like on an Android, you know,

you can do that little like finger swipe through

the dots. Yep to unlock your phone like that

way like like that stuff to me has always been

super inconvenient and And the even like a four

-digit pin on an iPhone was super inconvenient

So I never used any of that stuff so from like

any iPhone I had from the first one all the way

through like the iPhone 5 I never had a password

on it like anybody could have picked up my phone

and gotten into it and gotten into all my stuff

and because I It was there was the security Got

in my way, right? Like I want to get in my device.

I want to use it I don't want to have to unlock

it every single time I'm in the same boat. I

don't like to have to wait on the device or Punching

in a code so I always leave it unlocked Yeah,

so the with the iPhone 5s they put the they put

the touch ID in there which is you know the fingerprint

reader and I immediately as soon as I got that

phone and I set up my fingerprint I put in a

six digit passcode because that six digit makes

it makes it more secure than four digits. But

I did that because I don't have to put in my

pin. I just have to touch my phone and it unlocks

for me. And so like this past summer, my wife

and I were making a trip back home before we

got the new phones. and I was sitting in the

car and she was driving and I was doing some

stuff and I had to log in to different websites

and you log in to the website and it says, do

you want to use the password that's stored in

your phone? You say yes and then it's like, okay,

put your fingerprint on the thing to say that

it's you and it's like, I looked at it and I

said, this is really annoying. It's a really

cool feature, but it was really annoying, right?

I was like, I can't wait till I have Face ID

because I don't have to actually click anything.

It'll just see that it's me and it'll go. Which

it does, in fact, do that and that's awesome.

But the other neat thing that I really liked

about Face ID, because again, it's security and

privacy that doesn't get in my way. You have

the ability to, Android does this too. iOS does

this you have You know you can set it so like

when you receive a text message all the all the

notification says is who it's from Not what the

message is right? Well, I always thought that

was a really cool feature, but I never enabled

it because I Didn't want to have to unlock my

phone to See what messages were being sent to

me right to be able to read them from the notification

thing So if you picked up my phone when it had

Touch ID, you'd be able to read any notifications

I had gotten, but you wouldn't be able to unlock

my phone. So we're halfway there, right? I'm

secure, but I'm not private. Well, with the new

one, with the Face ID, the nice thing is that

feature where you can't see what the message

is, is on by default. Okay. Except when I pick

up the phone and I wake up the screen, and it

sees that it's me, it opens up the notification

to show me the message. It's a hidden message

that just says who it's from. And then when it

sees that it's me, it shows me the entire message.

And I just like it. I like that stuff when it

gets out of my way. And that's just another,

that's another, there's just a couple of examples

of how it gets out of. My way using the device,

you know, and I so the more they make it so I

it's more convenient for me to use like their

privacy features. That's great. But. Yeah, I

think, you know, I'm done with with full -fledged

computers and I'm definitely know I'm going to

end up with a new iPad here because I just I

told myself I told my wife and said if they go

they go edge to edge with that display or as

close as they can get and they go. Like they

put face ID on it. I can't I can't not get one

It just it looks it looks too cool And that's

what I've always liked about Apple so Yeah, I'm

I'm still waiting is as far as the phone thing

just until I can either checking the prices on

Black Friday or Or even waiting until Tax return

time. I'm just kind of waiting to see where Where

the prices go and in some of the like I'm really

heavily leaning towards the the pixel 2 XL mm

-hmm Because not only would that be a significant

upgrade from where I'm at right now from you

know galaxy s5 16 giga RAM and 2 giga or two

gig of RAM and 16 gig flash memory to four gig

of RAM and 64 gig of memory and an octa -core

instead of a quad. But I'm just kind of waiting

for the price to go down on it more before I

pull the trigger on that. And my phone's, for

all intents and purposes, working fine. Other

key moments where it starts lagging really bad

or will hang up Not like hang up on a call, but

just kind of hang up and freeze And I did some

Roto rooting in the the system cleaning it out

But it's still not Because it's all filled with

bloatware garbage and in Samsung's junk version

of of Android so Mm -hmm and I've looked at the

reviews to what's funny is the s9 doesn't even

have as good of a review as like the s8 There's

like I guess some issues with s9 compared to

the s8 I guess the s8 was like a better Overall

phone and some of the features are actually worse

on the s9 compared to the s8 which was kind of

interesting to look at I don't really recall

what they were at the moment, but It kind of

turned me off to the s9 anyway and I would rather

get like the the new pixel 3 that's out but Being

that the pixel 2 is gonna go down and price faster.

I'll probably jump ship to that I have a friend

as the pixel 2 I I like the pixel 2 if I was

an Android guy that's I'd go with a pixel phone

like I When I tried out Android devices in the

past. I always used Nexus devices because the

Nexus phones were That was the name the the branding

for this is a pure Google phone. It's a Nexus

phone Like Samsung made one I think HTC made

one forum Motorola made a couple forum, I think

but the the pixels I think are made by LG and

HTC Interesting. Yeah, depending on depending

on which one you get the I think the big one

is made by LG. I can't remember who the little

one is made by, but they're, it's the same idea,

but they changed the name from Nexus to Pixel.

And then it's, I guess like Google also has more,

but it's not like a, in the past, it would be,

I think what happened was, I think when Samsung

made it, they used it, so, See remember the galaxy

s From Samsung. I don't wait first. Oh, okay.

So there was well There was the galaxy and then

there's the galaxy s and then Google got involved

and they made the galaxy Nexus s Which was a

galaxy phone was a galaxy s, but it was pure

purebred Google from top to bottom But so it

was basically but it was the same design as a

Nexus or a galaxy s phone I think the pixel stuff

is like they're designed by Google, but they're

built by LG or HTC Hmm Yeah, I didn't know that

they did that If I'm getting that wrong, I don't

know if any of the listeners would know if I'm

getting that wrong I know LG makes the big one.

I don't know who makes the little one But no,

I that's what I would that's what I would do.

I have a friend that has one I like it I think

the the squeeze it to do different features is

kind of weird But that's whatever you don't have

to use it. Maybe it's really cool. I have no

idea Yeah, I'm I'm not like totally familiar

with all the features on it, but I know that

Overall that it's supposed to take better pictures

than any of the galaxy phones. It's supposed

to run leaner Faster so just a lot more going

on with the device compared to a galaxy phone

so Yeah, well it doesn't like you said doesn't

have the bloatware the over the overhead Yeah,

which that's that's the major concern because

I honestly cannot stand cannot stand that all

that crap that's on the phone and that's honestly

like if I could root the phone because it doesn't

run correctly anyway I would but there's no like

good way of doing that right so Yeah, it's kind

of one of those things. But yeah, I've been looking

at it, kind of pricing everything out, kind of

waiting to see what happens. I know that with

the Pixel 3 being out now, the 2 is going to

start dropping in price and then it'll make it

in my price range. Well, I'm excited to see what

you, you know, when you're able to pick one up,

what you think of it. I know cell phone topics

are probably very boring for the listeners to

talk about, but I actually like talking about

it, talking about them. And I am an unapologetic

Apple fanboy, but I will call them on their BS

if I actually can, if I can see it, which I don't

usually, I don't drink the Kool -Aid. I'm an

Apple fanboy that hasn't tasted the Kool -Aid.

And I will be the first one to say that I don't

think they've been as good as they were when

Steve was around, but that's just my opinion.

No, and I agree with you. He kind of had more

going on in the fact that he was all about how

it looked and how it functioned, and they're

not really... Yeah, I saw there was a comment

on one of the websites I read about the new iPads,

and they said that Apple now has... 28 different

models of iPads and the follow -up comment was

jobs must be rolling in his grave and I Completely

agree with that So and to be fair though, it's

not 28 I don't know if you consider them different

right? I feel like what they did is they took

all the different models and I think there's

I don't know I don't want to do the math on it

but they whatever it is you times it by six was

it so that would be like four what no maybe there's

like 24 different models or something like that

of iPad so yeah there's six different iPads but

each one has up to like six different configurations

So because you can get them with like Wi -Fi

or you can get them with with cellular or without

cellular cellular And then of course, there's

three different storage sizes for each one Which

depending on how you want to if you want to go

with semantics. Yes that makes it a completely

different iPad but See, that's the thing too

is Steve Jobs wasn't really about like having

50 different No, he wasn't it was this is this

is it this is what we've got and you're gonna

love it or your or you're gonna hate it, but

this is what we've got But you know and I you

know, I He was in favor of the smaller phone,

but I got to admit I like the larger You know,

I like the plus -size phone It took me for it

took me quite a while to get up there and the

screen sizes like I I went from You know the

5s to just the regular 6 like I didn't go with

the plus size phone until I think I did the 6

and this 6s as a standard size phone and I didn't

go to the big one until the iPhone 7 is when

I went to the big one but you know I held out

as long as I could because I felt like the smaller

ones were more true to what jobs wanted but when

they started putting features that you could

only get In the larger one and not the smaller

one. I was like well, I Don't want to have the

the the dumbed -down version of the iPhone So

yeah, I could I could get that All right Should

we talk to you see universe oh boy I myself have

not tried it more so because I don't want to

have to I Don't want to pony up the money. So

you get a week you get a week to try it. Oh They

have a free trial or do you have to pay all at

once? No, no, they have a they have a free trial.

You have a seven -day free trial Because let

me tell I will I don't know if I want to share

my story if we want to share the listeners story

First we can go with his story first. Yes, this

is a little more positive than mine so Scanner

51 says hey guys just wanted to say that I love

the new layout of the show love the longer episodes

But I'm sure you already knew I would he says

He's talking about Halloween he says I am over

a month into the DC app and enjoying it I've

read over $75 worth of comics and am trying to

rewatch both the original Teen Titans and Young

Justice, but I want to talk about Titans. I wonder

how many listeners are watching it. He says,

we are three episodes in and I am ready to say

this is my favorite DC show. First off, this

is not for everyone. Don't like dark DC? Don't

watch it. The best part is that the show was

shot as a movie, so episodes at times just end.

He loves Robin's portrayal not wanting to be

Batman but finding himself turning into him at

times and then how Hawk and Dove were changed

And then he says the costumes of the show are

great They're doing a great job at setting up

characters and he says I guess I'll be the de

facto Titans person for the show so Okay, first

of all, let me just say I I Love the original

Teen Titans. I love young justice I want to watch

the Titans TV series. I've heard a mixed bag,

but I generally don't go all in on what other

people have to say about something, especially

when I have the ability to check it out for myself.

So with that said, my wife and I, and I don't

know if I'll catch any flak from you, Steve,

I didn't catch any flak from anyone on Twitter

about it. In fact, I got one positive remark

about it. My wife and I were in Dallas About

a week and a half ago for a wedding and You know

when we go we don't have TV in the house So like

when we go away somewhere and we end up staying

like in a hotel What usually ends up on on screen

at night? You know when we're in bed is we put

on Cartoon Network And when we woke up in the

morning we put on Cartoon Network again And they

were airing. It seemed like Cartoon Network only

had three TV shows at this point. It was Teen

Titans Go. A show called Gumball. And there was

a third one, but I can't remember the name of

it right now at the top of my head. But I'll

say this. It might have been. What am I looking

for here? It's not Florence Nightingale Stockholm

syndrome it it may have been Stockholm syndrome,

but I And my wife we both really Started to enjoy

18 Titans go It may have been the fact that Like

a single like one 22 minute episode is actually

two separate episodes And it kind of reminded

us of watching YouTube Because a lot of the videos

we watch on YouTube are, you know, 10, 12 minutes.

The longer ones are, you know, 45 minutes. It

may have been that, but my wife kind of found

it kind of funny. Yeah, the animation's a little...

Well, it's not your typical DC animation, right?

But I found that the humor wasn't just... In

my opinion, I don't think it was I don't think

it's just for kids I think there's enough going

on there that if an adult is paying attention

to it Or at least myself and my wife you're paying

attention There's enough there for you to actually

to get a laugh out of it. Okay? In that and that

was awesome And so, you know, I told her I said

this is based off of another show from like the

early 2000s called Teen Titans and it's basically

it's the same characters just with a a little

more slightly better art style, more along the

lines of the DCAU. And the storylines were a

little heavier at some points. And I asked her

if she'd be interested in watching it with me.

And she said, yes. So I immediately set out to

try to find a way to watch the original Teen

Titans without having to steal it. And it's not

streaming anywhere except for DC Universe. So

I thought well DC Universe has that Titan show

they have Young Justice Which I know if I can

get her to watch Teen Titans I know she'll watch

Young Justice and I'm pretty sure she'll like

that Titan show. So Let's you know, let me try

it. All right, and I've got Two Apple TVs in

the house that we use regularly I downloaded

that app. I signed up for my account got my free

week trial That damn thing worked one night once

We watched three episodes of Teen Titans. Oh,

I was like, I really like this show. I would

like to watch more we went to bed We both got

to work the next day try watching it the next

evening Launch the app crash Okay Launch the

app again crash Okay, close the app restart the

Apple TV Power back up Launch the app crash.

Okay. All right. We'll go watch the other Apple

TV Same exact thing happens on it. We could not

we watched three episodes and the thing freaking

it that was all we could get out of it and I

tried every single night and I tried tweeting

at you know DC Universe like On Twitter to see

if they would say anything with regards to troubleshooting

help or anything like that. No silence crickets

and I was all set to pay there what the seven

dollars they wanted per month so that my wife

and I could enjoy these shows but I can't pay

you seven dollars for a service that doesn't

work and I get that there are people out there

that are using it on like Chromecast and that

they're reading the comics and they're getting

their money's worth out of it and it's working

but to me like I'm not going DC Universe, the

stuff they have on there is not worth me investing

in another hardware ecosystem. Nope, and I get

it. To be able to watch yourself. If you're going

to offer something on a platform, your stuff

needs to work. How you cannot have this streaming

stuff figured out is beyond me. YouTube has been

around for what feels like forever now. Same

with Netflix instant streaming, like HBO has

their stuff not really in line, but at least

their stuff works even if the video quality goes

to crap most of the time. Hulu is good, like

you can't, and who knows how many streaming video

services like Voodoo, iTunes, all that stuff.

Yet DC Universe can't be bothered to make an

app that actually works, not just works. works

on a platform that has a built -in install base

of people that are actually willing to spend

money? I don't say that in a condescending way,

but it's dumb. It shouldn't even be a thing.

And if it is a thing, if I go online right now

and I say something about HBO, and I at them,

they're going to at me back and try to help me

figure out what the problem is. For me to go

on Twitter and at DC Universe and call it a dumpster

fire and put in a really funny GIF of a dumpster

fire and get nothing, that's poor customer service

right there. And I went online to see if there

was something that people were like, oh, uninstall

the app and reinstall the app. Well, I tried

that a couple of times. That never worked. But

you shouldn't have to do that to make something

work. No, I agree. It's not all bad. I guess

it shouldn't be available on TVOS or on the Apple

TV if it isn't going to work. Like, I didn't

even bother to try it on my phone, or my computer,

or my iPad, because that's not why I'm signing

up for it. Like, I'm not gonna sign up to watch

Titans, or your Teen Titans, or the animated

Teen Titans, or the Young Justice, and I'm not

gonna watch it on my iPad or my computer. I have

a TV. I have a really nice TV. Like, make it

work. So yeah, I don't understand the logic in

it of why they would not get back with you I

Just don't it beyond that. I was don't understand

why it doesn't work You know it's not it's it

the streaming video is not rocket science Especially

when everybody's doing it yeah It just it baffles

me, but on the lighter side I did see you know

the Batman the anime and series was on there,

and it was streaming But I did not watch any

of that because supposedly my blu -ray set arrives

tomorrow So at least I will have that I've seen

I've seen the quality between the two I've seen

those comparison. Yeah like the open credits.

Yeah, I haven't actually obviously not seen it

because I don't actually have the blu -rays,

but Really the only thing like I mean I on the

one hand care like I do see the bad In in the

standard deaf versions. Mm -hmm When I watch

it because I can I mean it's grainy that you

can tell that it's not the best quality that

it could be But for how little I pull those DVDs

out Mm -hmm for me to go out and buy the blu

-rays. It just doesn't it's not feasible for

me see I just I I've never had the complete collection

of it I it's one of my it's one of my favorite

shows I've never had it I'm actually kind of

surprised it took them this long to put it on

blu -ray but it's a full I didn't look at really

what it was I heard Batman the animated series

on blu -ray and immediately pre -ordered it like

it's a ground -up restoration right yeah of like

yeah so I I don't I couldn't I could not get

that because like it's not in it's like I said,

it's not a double dip for me Yeah, see if you

didn't own it already it's it's a great deal

and I but at the same time So when blue ray first

came out I Had a friend what wasn't he wasn't

my friend. He was my sister's friend and he told

me that like the I never really bought into it,

but it's always been one of those things that

someone tells you and just kind of lingers in

your head every single time you think about it.

He told me that animation, it really can't look

better. Animated things like an animated version

of something on DVD wouldn't necessarily look

better on Blu -ray. and To some extent like to

With regards to him telling me that I never really

it was in that phase of my life We're like I'm

buying everything on blu -ray, so I'm never gonna

be able to see what he's talking about right

But I did pick up the cowboy bebop collection

on blu -ray about a year ago And it comes with

the it comes with the DVDs and it comes with

blu -rays and I the first time I sat down to

watch a couple episodes I put in the blu -ray

and Then I got my wife to actually want to watch

a couple of episodes So I just like I got it

out and I I put a disk in and we watched a couple

episodes and I'm like Yeah, I'm she's watching

it. She's kind of into it. I'm looking at it

going this looks really Actually might even been

the first time we watched it if I'm thinking

about it now like I'm looking I'm like this doesn't

look It didn't it didn't look how I was expecting

it to look right. It didn't look clean or Sharp

or pristine something about the image was just

kind of off And so like we watched a couple of

episodes that way and I was like, hold on a second

And I went and I opened it up and of course,

it's one of those things where you know It is

the DVD and blu -ray collection But they bill

it as the Blu -ray collection, but when you open

it up, they put the DVDs in the front and not

the Blu -ray. So I had accidentally put in a

DVD. So for the next one, I put in the Blu -ray

disc and there was a big difference in the quality

from like the picture to the sound. And that

was the first time I was able to make a direct

comparison of here is this thing. DVD and here

it is again a blu -ray I haven't made any I and

you know, I have I double dipped a lot of like

DVDs to blu -ray, but I never did direct comparisons.

I Just always like why why would I write I bought

the blu -ray version? That's all I'm gonna watch

because that's gonna be the best way to watch

it So I think If I had seen that and I had you

having had that experience if I had had Batman

I probably would double dip for the blu -ray

version, you know, like Just just because I am

I am a fan of that series I probably I probably

would especially since they did that ground -up

restoration and it shows it like I I watched

the comparison video And the standard death version

that's not restored definitely looks like my

DVDs. Because that was like... That was still...

That was made still back when they were basically...

Hand drawing everything. In film, right? Like

yeah, so that would look... You know, the detail

is there for HD to be able to bring that stuff

out. But so we get that tomorrow Hopefully so

that will that will scratch that I want to watch

Teen Titans itch and I'll just have to find some

other way to watch Teen Titans because I Work

it's just well right now. We're watching Teen

Titans go We started watching it from the beginning

because it's on Hulu Mm -hmm, and we're still

enjoying it still funny and like I said the episodes

you know it's two ten minute episodes put put

back to back the only thing that's weird is there's

no commercial breaks so it's really jarring when

an episode ends because the next episode literally

starts right up like you'll it it almost looks

like a scene change but like everything's been

reset that's when it and then it yeah it's pretty

jarring and then it goes for like 30 to 40 seconds

and then the new episode the title of the new

episode will show up at the bottom of the screen

with the written by and directed by but they

don't go back to the whole like theme song it's

just there was definitely supposed to be a commercial

and then the new episode was supposed to start

but there's no commercial so it's just two episodes

butted right up next to each other so we've just

been we've been making our way through that because

we can't watch Teen Titans and I'm not I Mean,

maybe maybe I'll give it a little while because

I know it's like a brand new service maybe I'll

wait until Titans is finished and I'll sign up

with a different email address and See if their

service has gotten any better but Like I said,

I don't doubt that people have gotten their money's

worth out of it I know there's a whole comic

part of it, but I don't care for DC Comics. I

never have I've read the Batman books that everyone

said I should read and I don't They're all really

great until like the last five pages and then

they all fall apart So that the comic part of

it isn't isn't really a draw for me so like Yeah,

it's and it's not enough for me to go out and

get like a fire stick or Chromecast just to be

able to watch These things like why would I have

an Apple T? I have Two Apple TVs. Why do I need?

I don't need I don't need something else. They

should just make it work. I can definitely relate

with that. So I may try it, though. Well, it's

a it's a free trial and your mileage may vary.

I don't know what your streaming platform or

choice is right now. It's Hulu. Well, no, like

what do you use? Like is it? Like, what are you

using? Oh, I use PCs. Okay, alright, yeah. You'll

probably have better luck than I did then. I

have a, basically a portable computer that sits

up at my entertainment center. And then most

of the time we just, I watch stuff from my second

monitor when I'm playing games and everything

on the other screen, so it's not gonna be a big

deal. And for the record, I'm 100 % certain that

if I tried it on my computer or my iPad or my

phone, I'm 100 % certain it would have worked.

But that's not the point. Get your crap in line,

DC. I want to pay you for your service. Yeah,

he's trying to do it legit and you're not giving

him any good reasons. I want to watch Teen Titans.

Then you won't let me and you know it really

bums me out because I you know it was because

Teen Titans was its early 2000s it was Right

before the cusp of the widescreen revolution

mm -hmm right So I told my wife when we sat down

to watch this it's just started I said I have

no idea how this is gonna look because I do remember

It was back in like 2009 2010 that I tried to

watch Batman the animated series because my buddy

had the entire series on DVD and I tried watching

them on my HD TV and I I did it because it's

Batman and I like I like the series even if even

if the first few episodes are really rough, but

I When I'm we sat down to watch Teen Titans on

the DC Universe app I was like, I don't know

what this is gonna look like. And in my head,

I flashed back to Batman the animated series

on DVD on a HDTV. That's what I had in my head.

But to my surprise, it was widescreen. It didn't

look like it was cropped to fill the screen or

stretched. You could definitely tell it wasn't

1080p. So it was definitely 720 or a lower resolution,

but it was still... At least 16 by 9 and that

was a pleasant surprise so It you you put the

right content up DC You just made a really crappy

app So Well, maybe AT &T will straighten it out

for him since you know, they own Warner Brothers

now Yeah, we'll see You know pressing that direct

TV on us But yeah, I mean, I don't know I'll

I'll give it a shot and maybe you know the next

episode I'll have a have a verdict on it. I I

honestly don't care to watch the the dark DC

stuff So if I get it, it's it's purely for the

point of seeing how the rest of it works. I don't

I I'm not well one. I'm not a fan of how they're

their release schedule is for the shows I don't

like the drip feed I don't like the drip feed

I just give it to me all at once or just don't

you know I don't know it because there's no enticement

for me to stick with it even though they're doing

the drip feed like I would like I may even wait

until after the shows have fully aired to do

the uh the all at once yep like I said that's

what I'll probably like sign up with a different

email address to get the free trial again to

Be able to try it and if at that time if it's

actually stable and I'm actually able to watch

all of the Titans show like Then maybe I'll sign

up and my wife and I will try to watch Teen Titans

It's just it was weird because like I I browsed

around a little bit on there like there isn't

Besides the comics like all the stuff you can

watch I feel like all the stuff that you could

watch on there any DC fan is already gonna own

Pretty much in a in a better version than what

you can show them so like I was going there to

watch something I didn't have access to So it's

really weird it's like aside from the comics

it's almost like who's this for and I think the

same argument could be made for I Think I think

we kind of made the same argument with the Disney

streaming service because people are talking

about how Disney doesn't have the rights to the

Star Wars movies. But it's like any Star Wars

fan is already going to own those movies. They're

not coming there because all of a sudden they

get to stream Star Wars. They're coming there

to get what they can't get, which is going to

be the Star Wars TV show. Pretty much. Now correct

me if I'm wrong. I had this thought the other

day. I know Netflix has the streaming rights

to like Rogue One and Last Jedi and Force Awakens

Okay, and I know that TNT is a TNT or TBS that

has the it's the same entity. Okay, they have

The the TV rights locked up for those movies

They have it locked up for all of the Star Wars

movies before the the force awakens now Is that

just TV like does TNT and TBS do they have a

streaming service? Not to my knowledge see in

therein lies this this thought that I had like

a couple weeks ago It's like okay, so TNT TBS

they have the rights to air them on TV But do

they have the streaming rights to these? You

know, it's like, if they don't have the streaming

rights, then Disney doesn't care. Like, if Disney,

Lucasfilm, whatever, still has the streaming

rights to those six Star Wars movies, they don't

care if TNT and TVS has those for putting them

on TV. And I think that's why they're really

not making, like... Mean we don't know what they

have so that's probably you know it but I have

a feeling that I haven't seen anywhere that says

the TBS and TNT has The the streaming rights

to those movies, so I don't think Disney cares.

I don't think they're worried about it I don't

I don't think they're worried about it either.

I don't think I care I mean even if they did

have the streaming rights. I still don't think

they'd be worried about it, so But which I don't

know Real quick sidebar tangent on this whole

thing I saw Mike post about it and I think we

could just talk about it here real quick. I don't

even want to get really that into it, but they

finally announced the lineup for the PlayStation

Classic. What do you think? No, I can't. When

they announced the PlayStation Classic and they

wanted you to pre -order one without even knowing

what games were going to be on there. That's

a red flag. Yeah, I was skeptical from the get

-go and then they announced the final list and

I looked through it. There's some stuff that

I actually like on there. Like I'm a legit fan

of Cool Borders 2, but I also know that I could

go to any used video game shop and buy a copy

of Cool Borders 2 for like $2 and put it in any

one of my PlayStations with the exception of

the PlayStation 4 and still play it. I don't

like For anyone that doesn't know this of course

that obviously there's the original PlayStation

the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation 3 will

play PlayStation 1 games All of them every ver

and I know people are probably gonna be like

but the PlayStation 3 doesn't have backwards

compatibility It will play PlayStation 1 games

It does not have the ability to play PlayStation

2 games That's fine it will play PlayStation

1 games so for anyone that has a PlayStation

3 if you're going out to buy a PlayStation classic

why? Like there's I Maybe maybe it's because

I don't think there's any memorable Let me figure

out how I want to phrase this I Don't think there

are any memorable PlayStation games that haven't

been done better, that haven't been redone or

repackaged for the better on later PlayStation

systems. I think Joe said this the right way,

I think on Facebook, and I have this thought

too about a lot of things from that time period.

like graphics are only as good as they were at

that time and if you strive for like Realistic

graphics your games age poorly It finally dawned

on me a couple of years ago the difference between

Graphics and art style And by that, I mean, if

you go for realistic graphics, it ages really

poorly. But if you go for an art style, your

game is going to be playable for a long time

across a lot of different eras of video gaming.

There's a reason that... And I think the SNES,

the 16 -bit era, the 8 -bit and the 16 -bit era,

they're treading that fine line between graphics

and art style because they were almost the same

thing. they were like right at that intersection

which is why you see that renaissance right now

where you have like that 16 -bit art style coming

back around and everyone's like oh this looks

really cool it makes me really nostalgic well

that's because that art style still looks cool

and it did then and it still does now but if

you look at like the original Gran Turismo or

any game from like the PlayStation 8, the same

goes for PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3. Anything

that was designed to look real, your battlefields,

your Call of Duty's, your Gran Turismo's, your

Forza's, anything that was designed that way

looks like utter garbage. Because it doesn't

hold up. But at the time, everyone was like,

this looks amazing. It goes back to the kind

of like what we talked about at the beginning

of this episode with like movies When you're

there and you're in it, it's like the most amazing

thing ever but if you If you look at it now it

it probably looks like trash it's like so I Ever

all the HD remakes that are being made for like

the the consoles you got your crash bandicoos.

You got your Spyros and they remade one of my

favorite games, which is Burnout Paradise. I

feel like those games, the remakes of those games,

a good HD remake makes the game look like it

always looked to you. You know what I'm saying?

You're sitting down, you're playing it when the

game first came out like 10 years ago. You're

like, this looks amazing. And then you pick up

the HD remake and you're like, yeah, this looks

exactly how I remember it. But if you look at

them side by side, you would probably want to

scratch your eyes out and figure out why the

hell you like that in the first place. You know,

because it you know, things have all things come

a long way. And I just I don't think the PlayStation

has anything that. Just. Yeah, they put Final

Fantasy seven on there. Awesome. I can think

of like A dozen other ways to play Final Fantasy

7 Yeah, I have no ambition to pick this up only

because like I did none of the games that are

on this resonated with me I Like and like I said

the minute they announced it without telling

you what games I didn't I was out at that point

like Nintendo did it right they announced the

console and here's the games Not Here's the console

pre -order. I didn't know who like who does that

even help like if you go in and like It pre -ordering

helps nothing I wonder I this dawned on me the

other day cuz I think I'm toying like I'm like

I want to pre -order something cuz like if I

pre -order it right I get it sent to my house

and the day it comes out and I don't have to

worry about it but like Or I can go to the store

and pick it up and I'm guaranteed to have my

copy But I also know that in this day and age

I can walk into a store the day something comes

out and and Buy it. I mean within reason as long

as it's like a video game or a movie. I Can pretty

much go into into the store and buy it without

having pre -order it like and I what I'm about

to say is really only a knock against GameStop

and The reason for that is because if you go

to pre -order something at GameStop, what do

they want? They want $5. Well, when I pre -ordered

the games from there, they wanted $5. I don't

know what it is now, but they wanted you to put

$5 down towards your game. You know what they

did with that $5? You know what they do with

that $5? Keep it. No, they put it towards your

game, but you go in there, let's say you go in

there two years before a game actually comes

out and you pre -order that, you put that $5

down and you pre -order it. They sit on that

$5 and they get, I don't, granted it's probably

not a lot, but you have to think about how many

people are pre -ordering games from GameStop.

They collect interest on your money. So they're

sitting there just making money off of money

that you've given them and this is gonna sit

with them for two years. And then you're gonna

come in and you're gonna get $5 off the game

that you pre -ordered. and they're still gonna

have all the money that they gain in interest.

Now I don't, I'm not a math guy. Like I said,

it's probably not a lot. It's the way that things

work, but I would imagine they probably have

a way of making quite a bit of money off of the

interest of your just pre -ordering a game for,

and having it pre -ordered for two years. And

not to mention the people that just go in and

plop $60 down on a pre -order and it just sits

with them, you know? And that's one of the reasons

why I like Best Buy. I like Amazon. They don't

take the money until it ships. So they're not

trying to make money off of you, like by holding

your money. Amazon will even give you a better

price if the price changes. Yeah, exactly. That

that was one of the reasons why I would preorder

stuff from Amazon is because I would get that.

In fact, I got that. But I got the Batman on

Blu Ray set for like 80 bucks. Because I preorder

on Amazon. At some point while they had it it

dropped that low So but like yeah, I just don't

get the whole Like Like and that's what Sony

was doing and I don't know who they were helping

like You you help GameStop I guess like people

that went into came GameStop and pre -ordered

the damn thing I gave them the money up front

and then GameStop sits there and collects the

interest on it like I'm wondering what the metrics

are on like if anyone cancelled their pre -order

But nah people probably kept it and then sticking

they're gonna flip it You know probably because

it won't have availability or something But I'm

out I there isn't the the PlayStation doesn't

have the same guy. I don't think the PlayStation

2 I don't even think there's enough PlayStation

2 games To make me want a PlayStation 2 classic

because like I said there isn't any game That

hasn't been remade or redone for the better or

it doesn't have a better sequel on a more recent

platform So yeah, I kind of agree with you on

that that's And the other thing that's kind of

funny about this is they they make you pre -order

this thing and then I like how they upgraded

the the controller slots for USB and then they

they made the back so that it's HDMI but The

the funny thing is is the power cord it doesn't

come with the AC adapter Well, okay, so I haven't

really looked into it too much because I know

I'm not gonna get one but that's really weird

because The NES and the SNES classic Run off

of a USB power cord Like like my my little my

my power conditioner for my entertainment center.

Yes. I have one of those everybody My power conditioner

for my entertainment center has a USB charging

port on the front of it and When I want to play

my SNES classic I plug it in I don't use the

little wall plug that it came with I plug the

USB USB cable and directly into my power conditioner

And it runs off of that. Yeah, this thing it's

kind of it You can plug it in USB To the back

for the AC adapter purposes, but like there's

no it doesn't come with one. Oh So does it come

with a power cord? No What It says you're lying

to me. No, it says a compatible USB AC adapter

not included is required to use this console

No way No Yep, that's what it says right on their

website. I'm on PlayStation's website right now.

I'm go I'm USB AC adapter not included see back

for details That's insane Isn't it though that

it comes with an it comes with an HDMI cable

to connect to your TV But heaven forbid they

give you power. How would you? Why I Guess I

mean, okay, I get it. Oh, no, I don't get why

not adding one but at the same time Kind of get

it because how many bricks do people probably

have laying around their house? Like I said,

I this is something you could like plug into

your TV and probably power it off of the USB

port on your TV Thank them I'm fairly certain

you probably could but that Well, okay, wait

a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I won't

blast them for this unless I'm gonna put Nintendo

on blast because One of the 3ds is Didn't come

with a power cable the 2d s didn't I don't think

I? Wasn't there was also one of the one of the

3d s's didn't come with a power cable, too Was

it just a 2d s I think so cuz I? Yeah, I I had

to get one Okay, so we at least know is the 2d

s so that's the same. That's the same thing and

no one put Nintendo I mean I read about it, but

what's funny is I haven't heard anything about

this online But the people that I've heard that

are excited about this are probably people like

me or Maybe in the same boat as you that have

these little power bricks laying all over the

house But I I know I can't go from one room in

my house to another one without seeing one So,

oh that's too funny that That's rude Yeah, I

just thought it was funny. So it comes with the

cable. It just doesn't come with the powers the

brick. Yep Okay Well, that's nice at least yeah

Idiotic Yeah, how long are the how long are the

chords it doesn't say okay, I would be curious

to know that just because I think that it's probably

gonna be a Not not long enough, but it's hard

to say without seeing it unraveled Yeah, that's

the other. I mean, that's the other nice thing

is I have like a long HDMI cable attached to

the back of my receiver and I plug my SNES into

the front of my power conditioner and I put it

on the ottoman in front of me so I'm not really

worried about the cable length for anything like

like these because The console doesn't sit under

my TV. It sits on the ottoman like within three

feet of me, so I'm not one of those people who

has to worry about how long your cable is. I

know that's too funny. That's Dang I really don't

I don't I really don't want one You know I I

think I'll pass on that I I'm going to be looking

forward to eventually when they they come out

with a and did not PlayStation but When they

when Nintendo comes out with a GameCube classic

I don't Just because I I had I that was the first

console I bought the game you say GameCube GameCube

I still think I still think about that too like

Don't know I would rather just straight -up have

Switch remakes of like the games that I would

walk from the GameCube or even the N64 for that

matter I would just want straight -up switch

remakes like give me give me a excuse me like

an HD remake of Mario 64 and Give me the HD remake

of the Metroid Prime games like That's that's

what I want. I don't know that I want I Don't

know that I want a console like because it goes

back to why you know, I blasted the Like I like

Mario 64. I don't think Mario 64 is a good -looking

game. I Did at the time because of that whole

rant I went on a little bit ago, but I don't

now But I do know that I really enjoyed that

game and I would give it another chance if there

was an HD remake of it But and I I can say that

too about Metroid Prime like I tried playing

it on the Wii But that could have been the motion

controls. I got in my way because I'm not a fan

of motion controls Yeah, I can't say I'm in the

same boat for motion controls i don't really

like all that but with with metroid prime 4 coming

i have to think there's a metroid prime trilogy

remake coming as well they're just there has

to be you're you're they're leaving money on

the table i i don't know how they could not do

that so Well, I don't know if I have it in me

to talk about the other things that we wanted

to talk about I don't think so either I think

we've hit a good stopping point I'm so sorry

Dan We were going to make an attempt, but then

we ended up talking about nothing Yeah, it went

all over the place. So that's it's fine. I I

I tried I feel like We made it flow a little

bit That may just me being delusional after working

all day But I feel like we did a pretty good

job like we went from You know talk like kind

of catching up for a little bit talking about

creating things and The hardware we use to create

things and then we talked about you know the

phones and an Apple for a little bit and then

that kind of spun off into DC universe yeah,

I hear about yeah DC universe and that talked

about you know classic gaming and was you know

old And I think the common the common thread

there kind of was just old versus new You know

for a little bit of it because we talked about

the the older movies versus newer movies in the

beginning And then we talked about it with with

gaming and and whatnot I Don't know I I feel

like it We made a little bit of sense with this

episode. Just a little bit. At the very least,

it's a longer episode. Yeah, so Scanner 51 will

be exciting. So. Alrighty, yes, we will have

to have you back on another episode sooner rather

than later. I'll be happy to come back. Maybe

I can have better things to talk about. Yeah,

likewise. It's been kind of crazy with work,

so I'm kind of all over the place. Alright, so

until next time, get altered, get geeky with

the Altered Geeks. Bye!
