About this Episode

We break down the latest Transformers Funko Pop announcements and discuss expectations for the Hasbro PulseCon 2020 virtual event, including the appearances of Peter Cullen and Frank Welker. We also share thoughts on the Studio Series 86 figures, the conclusion of Cyberverse, and cover the December 2020 IDW Publishing comic solicitations. Finally, we reflect on the anniversaries of G1, Beast Wars, and Beast Machines.

Hello and welcome to All Things Transformers.

I'm your host, Steve Megatron Phillips, and joining

me in this return to the AllSpark is TFG1 Mike.

Yes, we are here. We have a lot of things to

talk about tonight, and I completely forgot about

and I didn't mention this to you. It'll be fairly

quick once I actually find it, but we also have

the IDW Publishing December solicitations for

comics as well, but we have a lot of stuff starting

with My favorite and yours. Well, not you but

everybody else at least anyone else that you

know likes cool stuff Finally happened I have

been with so I have been a fan of Funko for three

years now. I got my first one in 2017 My first

one was stone called Steve Austin from WWE I

got him at my local comic shop on free comic

book day that year and I've just kind of not

necessarily gone crazy, but I've gotten sucked

into the funko fun because and plus now with

me living in my wife and I living in Vancouver

Washington. I live three hours away from funko

HQ. So yeah, I'm a little obsessed, but all this

time they have he man funko's they have Knight

Rider they have a team they have shits Creek

they and that's that's a TV show folks. I'm not

trying to curse That they have they just announced

and what we're gonna have to talk about this

an alter geek This is they just announced that

they're doing dumb and dumber pops So they have

all these things from all these they have Marvel

they have DC they have everything Okay, the one

thing I've been waiting for them to do is transformers.

They have a transformers license They've only

ever done up until right now The movie style

stuff Well, it has been announced that coming

in late November or early December Transformers

Funko pops My buddy Wes Howard who runs popping

off toys I had put his link up on our Facebook

fan page so people can pre -order these through

him because it would be awesome to send him business

since he's a small business owner. We are getting

Optimus Prime. We're actually getting five in

total, but two of them have exclusive variants.

Optimus Prime and Soundwave both have exclusive

variants. The Soundwave variant will be a GameStop

exclusive. The Optimus Prime variant is an Amazon

exclusive. The difference is that the Optimus

Prime is the metallic Funko style. And sadly,

it's either the scalpers already got him or whatever,

because the Amazon listing is like, we're not

sure if this item will be in stock again, kind

of thing. So there's Optimus and Soundwave, Megatron,

Jazz, and Bumblebee, and they're all G1 style.

Yeah, I cannot wait to get these. So cool. Say

so. You know as soon as they make and you're

like oh, I'd be down with this if it was Beast

Wars and I told you on Facebook. I said give

them time The only one I would actually break

for is Megatron Megatron obviously yeah, and

at this point like I've kind of come to this

realization that I don't need toys But I wish

I could get the masterpiece Megatron, but that

aside, I have this desire to get the figures

of characters I've voiced, such as... You know

Beast Wars Megatron in any of his iterations

or all of them if possible G1 Scourge, which

we'll get into that later And just just a multitude

of other characters I've played because I just

I like I Don't know the the visual representation

of the thing that I've done I guess it's kind

of why I like a lot of voice actors kind of do

that too Right. No, absolutely. Yeah, okay. So

the thing with me and Funko is that Yes, it is

a toy, but I'm not sitting here like dark helmet

You know waiting for somebody to catch me playing

with them The only time I take these things out

of the box is to take photos and then I put them

right back in the box They go right back on the

shelf or wherever I'm displaying them my desk

whatever and they're display pieces to me because

like you just said Mine isn't so much characters

I've voiced because I can't voice act for shit.

I thought you were made of sterner stuff. I'll

just go ahead and fall now, thank you. But it's

one of those things where if a character means

something to me and I can have it in a collectible

form that I don't necessarily need it. I would

love to have. Our good buddy, Mr. Canada himself,

Michael Dodd, was going back and forth with me

on a Facebook thread about, oh, just get the

masterpiece. I can afford a Funko poppet. Eight

nine ten eleven twelve fifteen bucks. I can't

afford masterpiece sound wave at a hundred and

sixty dollars So I'm perfectly fine with having

the characters that I love be the Funko they

Funko to me is What Mighty Mugs was to me ten

years ago? Same kind of thing hell the boxes.

They're not exactly similar similar, but they're

they're close but it's one of those things where

it's just a fun little thing that represents

a character that you love and they do so many

different characters that it's like ooh you can

have one of everything that you love you don't

have to collect them all because there are plenty

of funcos that i do not i have no interest in

game of thrones funco i have no interest in insert

name here that most people know that i'm not

that interested in so you know I don't collect

all of these things. I don't have to catch them

all. So that's the Funco stuff. Hasbro is doing

Hasbro PulseCon 2020. It's two days of this thing.

This is Friday, September 25th and Saturday,

September 20th. I almost said December. Wow.

September 26th. This is the schedule day one

is Dungeons and Dragons Magic the Gathering Star

Wars and Marvel day two is GI Joe Transformers

Power Rangers and Ghostbusters So that's what's

going on for Hasbro pulse con As far as when

is this schedule? Hasbro pulse con yes September

oh when is that supposed to go out of this episode

when no when is is pulse? con 2020 happening

friday september 25th and saturday september

26th this week yeah oh lord he's evil laughing

folks everybody be afraid be very afraid along

with pulse con schedule announcement they've

announced two very High profile Transformers

guests. Both Peter Cullen and Frank Welker will

be attending Hasbro PulseCon 2020. So very, very

cool. I assume and I hope because it does not

say on the the Transformers post that I shared

from the official page did not say a time and

did not say whether it was going to be. I assume

it's going to be virtual online and people can

actually watch it. The crazy thing to me is like

I'm used to seeing Frank Welker basically clean

shaven and his gray hair and everything else.

I'm not used to seeing Peter Cullen with like

this goatee beard action going on. I'm used to

seeing him with just his mustache and I'm like

that's Peter Cullen and I look at it I'm like

yeah that's Peter Cullen all right. So excited

for that. Yes, so it's it's kind of interesting

that they're doing this this new Hasbro convention

Mm -hmm, and it's funny that they still are bringing

BotCon back but But no, I mean, I'm I'm kind

of stoked to see what they do with it It's It's

gonna be telling of what they do with the future

of transformers. They have kind of like the big

convoy Optimus Prime head on their teaser image

so i'm wondering if i'm wondering if we're about

to hit that second level of beast wars returning

um potentially i mean i know that earth wars

is or earth rise is that the one that they're

doing earth rise or is that no kingdom kingdom

is beast wars yes kingdom is beast wars um so

i'm hoping that they they kind of take a cue

from beast wars and they make them actually sound

like beast wars and don't I know that, let me

preface this with saying, I enjoyed the first

installment of the trilogy. I did find some of

the acting a bit weak. Like they were all too

dark, too gravelly, too similar. But I don't

think that that's necessarily the way that they

could go with the next two installments. I think

it was very much a learning experience. So I'm

optimistic for the next two. I'm just hoping

that they kind of hold true with the characterizations

and the voices Being similar even though they

can't use the actual actors Okay, so I mentioned

this last episode when we talked about this because

I found this out that The war for Cybertron trilogy

is non -union. Yes So it's non -union voice people.

So you're not going to see Peter Cullen as much

as we'd love to have him. You're not going to

see Frank Walker as Megatron. And honestly, it's

not that I don't want to see them in the roles.

No, it's not the end of the world. I would absolutely

love to. But I like Jake as Optimus. I like Jason

as Megatron. So it is what it is, and that's

fine. I'm just hoping that they don't stray too

far like they did in the machinima series where

they had Optimus Primal and Optimus Primal sounded

more like this and didn't really sound as you

know, the same as Optimus Primal that you know,

Gary Chalk did and you know, I That's kind of

what I'm more worried about. It's not that I'm

going oh where they have to have the original

voice actors No, they I just I'm hoping for something

that's very close and I One of the worst ones

I always hear people do is Megatron and it drives

me nuts Because it's it's not just oh well We're

we're going to defeat the Maximals today, you

know, it's I hear a lot of people do that crappy

version of it and It just it honestly just bothers

me So I'm hoping that we get something that's

at least resembling, you know, even if it's not

me Right. It should be me, but again, it should

be me. I already do the voice. So. Yes, yes.

How dare you, you insolent maximals. So, yeah,

that's that's happening. We got see here the

studio series 86 hot rod cup no scourge No, I

do have a question about this. I've seen these

pop up. The first one I saw was hot rod and I

At first was not aware that cup had one Until

I was kind of browsing. I saw the the hot rod

one and I realized he's not He's not quite the

same as the animation model, but he's pretty

blasted close I mean, I know they took liberties

with the color changes Yeah, which is to be expected

I do love how the attention to detail to him

and all of his little add -ons from the movie

are in there like his accessories It's almost

like having a mini masterpiece without and I'm

assuming I could be wrong. I'm assuming that

These are going to be basically masterpiece without

being masterpiece. I Think that's what studio

series is supposed to be but I could be wrong

I do not know I am NOT an expert on transformers

toys anymore I had other than seeing these images

I would not have even noticed this but the fact

that it's hot rod and he is well My favorite

character and yada yada yada this this is actually

pretty much the best hot rod toy I've ever seen

The only other one I will put over it is Masterpiece

Rodimus. Well, I'm saying Masterpiece aside,

out of any of the other figures. Oh, absolutely.

Hands down. This is hands down the most epically,

beautifully put design version of him. And I'm

not going to count the masterpiece because it's

a whole nother level of other level. Yeah, but

I'm hoping that they kind of bridge the gap there

because I feel like the masterpiece has kind

of priced itself out of general collectors or

general fans of the toys. And I feel like that's

a detriment. Like I was I was wanting that Beast

Wars Megatron, but three hundred and thirty dollars.

There's no way. I paid 129 for Optimus Primal.

And I realize Megatron is like a head and a half

taller, by comparison, just for scaling purposes,

but I feel like that, like at maximum, he should

have been 180. And that's at maximum I I would

have been more comfortable if he was like 150

which even then is kind of pushing it for me

But I could at least scrounge enough things to

pay for it three hundred and thirty dollars for

that Yeah, I as much as I would love to have

that there's no way and I've seen knockoff like

versions of the transmetal and the transmetal

2 version of Megatron And I've read the reviews

on him because like I saw one and it was like

60 bucks you could get, you know, and it looks

like a masterpiece, but I was reading the reviews

and everybody was saying it was garbage. Like

it falls apart and it suffered from the same

issues that the original toy had. And so I was

like, well, I'm not going to spend the money

on that. And I've seen the dragon one and he's

apically just like the show, but. Again it kind

of puts it into question like I don't know what

the quality control is and so To pull the trigger

on something like that. I just don't want to

but for the this the series the 1986 series I'm

Very very enthusiastic and especially when I

saw that scourge is getting one And I've never

seen a good scourge figure With all of the details

with all of that because I previously owned the

titanium version From that line that came out

years ago, and I sold it because I was like well

It doesn't match the movie and I do the movie

one You know like not the movie, but you know

the season four this this man. Oh, she made four,

but anyways It's the same same design, and it's

supposed to be like a studio series Look, so

I'm hoping that this is this is relatively good

in price range because I would love to get that

because that's actually my first Voice -over

role that I ever played For anything like online

So I would I would love nothing more than to

get that figure just because of that alone and

of course, you know eventually Megatron and Some

other ones, but you know, I I think that this

is a very sleek looking figure There's no General

robo kibble. It's got the the same curves and

colorations as the movie and so Yeah, I mean

I'd be definitely down for this if I saw it Depending

on Bryce. I'm hoping that it's around like the

maximum like 80 Mm -hmm, because I could probably

swing that but beyond that it's it's no Yeah

Let's see here See all the stereo series stuff

has been announced for like I said hot rod cup

Let's see Transformers cyber verse season 3s

finale just aired on YouTube very very cool i

don't know i mean it says it's the season finale

but i don't know if i assume they're gonna bring

it back for a season four i don't know this season

kind of ended on a on a good note i think it

kind of ends it very quickly we'll have a full

review of it and i'll let you say something here

in a second but we'll have a full review of it

in one of our episodes coming later maybe a short

while later maybe a long time later it just depends

on whenever season three of the show hits netflix

It's gonna have a fourth season. I think it was

concluding at the third season. It has an abrupt

end. I think that that was the end. Okay. Yay.

Happy ending. Yay. Everybody's dead. Except Autobot.

Well... No. Not everyone's dead. This is an interesting,

uh... Save Soundwave and a couple others. Yeah.

This is an interesting season. I'll put it that

way. Uh, and then before we talk about what we,

what I originally meant this episode to be, uh,

our good buddy, Randall has, uh, put out a couple

of videos recently. One is online with perceptor,

a, uh, NG smooth PSA. And it's basically talking

about. You know, take breaks. Don't always sit

in front of the screen. That kind of thing, you

know, get up and stretch, you know, um, I will

embed these videos, uh, or I will at least link

to them in the show notes so people can watch

them. Uh, and then the second one was, um, nothing

beats a classic Bumblebee. Nothing beats a classic

2020 edition. Randall went through and did all

kinds of redesigns on the their bumblebee model

and everything else and updated it and Brought

in Dan Gilva's and to do the voice and it's this

quick little video and it's really kind of awesome

and Randall has always been one of my favorites

and I love his work and him and dr. Smoove and

oh, yeah Just those guys have been epic and they've

been a huge part of the Transformers community

for years It always finds it always makes me

laugh when I see the morons that are constantly

commenting on his videos looking for a you know

like oh first The people that attracts is hilarious

or like oh, I guess you don't make YouTube videos

anymore You know or some of the other stuff Somebody

else was like oh, yeah perceptors voice is pretty

neat And then look, they reply, they're like,

oh, credits, Perceptor voice, Paul eating, writing

who voice Perceptor. And he's like, oh, OK. Yeah,

I don't know. I think it's funny. Some of the

stuff that comes up on his videos, but I love

the animation. I love the attention to detail

and I love the fun that he has with it. Absolutely.

Very, very fun. So. The original purpose of this

episode was for me not to open my calculator

app. Wow. Um, because one shall stand, one shall

count because we have a bunch of transformers,

anniversaries, uh, 24 years of beast wars, 36

years of G one and 21 years of beast machines.

Yeah. Think I think that's right. Yeah 99 to

22. Yeah 16th and 17th 16th was Beast Wars 17th

was of September was Generation one what started

it all and I believe it was the 19th of 1999

was Beast Machines I Gotta say these like I've

mentioned this before on the show that Certain

episodes of G1 I can still watch it was I don't

think it was ever meant to be a Serialized like

that. They had two -parters and they did this

and they did that and whatever but It's not a

full continuity It's not like Beast Machines

where it's an entire continuity Kind of thing

and that's fine. And it's okay because the 80s

were completely different September 18th, not

19th of 99 was the reformatting for Beast Machines.

So September 18th was the 21st anniversary of

Beast Machines. But I still love watching episodes

from various ones. I find that in Beast Wars

and G1, I pick and choose. I can pull out the

Feral Scream two -parter at any one given time

and just absolutely sit there and just enjoy

it. Cuz you know cheetor Hey, I find that I enjoy

a lot of the different Transformers series and

there's various episodes that I enjoy between

them Like Beast Wars, I always love coming in

the few source part one and two Yeah, that was

a good one because it's it's you know a Western

it's reintegration of Optimus Primal. It's There's

just a lot going for it, and I really enjoy it

and That's always one of my go -to is like the

other ones I I kind of fluctuate between the

regular season one because there's a lot of episodes

I just don't care to see again, and then there's

other ones that are pretty good, but I kind of

stick in the season two realm for the most part

because there's a lot in there that kind of ties

into other Aspects are a lot darker themes you

get code of a hero you get the agenda part one

through three I love optimal situation and then

I of course like nemesis part one and two and

A few other ones throughout there. I don't mind

feral scream, but I can only take it so many

times I find that the ones with like crossing

the Rubicon and The like go with the flow go

with the flow is fun. Just because the depth

charge being a boat But the rest of like some

of the episodes. I don't really enjoy them all

that much in season 3 There or I do like the

one where rat trap is in the bubble trying to

get sentinel But other than that like I there's

a lot of aspects. I don't care for in in the

other episodes. Beast Machines, there's, you

know, the first four episodes I pretty much enjoy.

It's kind of hit or miss for the rest of season

one. There's a lot of season two I don't care

for. I do like the flipping of the switch of

Silverbolt and Blackarachnia. And then I, of

course, love the ending where Primal and Optimal

Megatron are fighting. And then there's a lot

of stuff in G1, there's a lot of stuff in Prime,

there's a lot of episodes of all the different

series that I just enjoy watching. So to have

all of these different generations, more or less,

it's a fun time to be a fan of the program. Absolutely.

Yeah, it really, really is. Just can't believe

we're we're slowly getting up there an age to

Like So we should be writing new ones No, we

give them the ideas and then they just make it

Well, they don't just take it they pay us for

the idea. Well, no, but I'm saying like we give

the ideas and somebody else writes it Yeah, well

that would not probably work But it's one of

those things where it's like, wow, my childhood

was 36 years ago. Okay. Even though I'm 40, I

say 36 years ago because I was four years old.

I was probably five or six when I first saw the

show, but I remember watching it along with Voltron

and Thundercats and mask and all of that stuff.

I was a little kid back then and it's like, That

is so long ago now and it just This is why I

like and I live for certain aspects of nostalgia

because Well, I do absolutely think cyberverse

was one of the better modern iterations of a

Transformers cartoon and I did very much enjoy

it There are others that I will avoid but I can

always go back to my childhood and relive moments

and memories and whatever like It's so funny

the our our one of our favorite memes just popped

up in my memories as We're recording this The

the optimus prime meme I forget which Which damn

it which episode which It was from a prime thing

was from the prime problem where he's like Amazing

a booby trap that actually catches boobies And

that just brings me back to my childhood because

I think that was the episode where my aunt was

like Did they just say ass on that cart like

she forbade me from watching? Transformers at

her house after hearing him say boobies Yeah,

I could make a comment, but I'm gonna leave it

Don't matter to me no, I'm just gonna leave it

Come on no Guilty party is not going to say anything

Come on. You know you want to say it say it say

it say it no I can't But no I've I've I've kind

of come to that point where I don't need it to

match my rendition of quality level I Do have

a pet peeve when voices don't sound similar But

as far as like the writing or is the animation

I've kind of learned to get over that because

they're not all made for me Yeah, but I don't

want the voices to be such a jarring thing either

because It makes it hard for them to find the

older series interesting, because to them, whatever

they're exposed to, that's the voice that they

think of. Exactly. So looking at Batman, the

animated series, any of us that grew up with

that, automatically when we read Batman, that's

the voice we hear is Kevin Conroy. Hmm. And so

just like Optimus Prime. Anytime we hear Optimus

Prime, it's Peter Cullen. Anytime we hear, you

know, Megatron, it's Frank Walker or, you know,

Beast Wars, it's David Kay or Gary Chalk. I mean,

it's those elements that kind of tie it. And

so that's kind of where I have the pet peeve

with not having a similar sounding voice. It's

good you can kind of get into that pickle where

they just don't sound anything alike And then

you end up with people that are just kind of

alienated with the other series instead of enjoying

them for what they are Right and like I've been

saying in our two episodes that we did for cyberverse

Jake Fushi and Jason Marnocha I'm probably screwing

that up. Yeah, yeah them and Jake as Optimus

and Jason as Megatron Know certain people say

oh his optimist sounds a little bit like Peter

Cullen while I do see it I don't think he's actively

trying to like he's just doing a voice for optimist

that actually fits that optimist character Same

thing with Megatron Jason is not trying to imitate

Frank Welker in any way and in my personal opinion

I don't think he is Maybe we can eventually have

him on the show to to actually ask him that question

but it's one of those things where out of all

not counting beast wars out of all the generation

one optimists and megatrons those are my two

favorite outside of obviously the originals um

let's see the other thing that i forgot to bring

up earlier was the idw Publishing solicitations

for Transformers came out. These are December

2020 solicitations. We've got, I think, three

titles here, yes. Transformers number 26, Brian

Ruckley on writing and Malkova on art with Freddie

Williams II doing a cover. Warworld continues

as two new leaders of Cybertron's most dominant

factions step into their new roles. One finds

himself seeking counsel from one of the four

great generals for better or for worse. Meanwhile,

the other is given counsel by his mentor. But

it's been a long time since Megatron and Termagix

saw eye to eye. So that's number 26. Transformers

Back to the Future number three of four. Written

by Kevin Scott and one some moves on art and

colors Where and when are Marty McFly and his

pal the Autobot gigawatt? or gigawatt That's

what Biff Tannen wants to know because if he

can find them he can help his bosses the Decepticons

find what's left of the resistance and found

them into next week. And if Biff can't find them,

well, he'd better prepare to be on the receiving

end of a Decepticon whoopin'. So Transformers

Galaxies, which was the... You're going to have

to edit this because I can't mute. So Transformers

Galaxies was the... News spotlight type of thing

where they spotlighted characters apparently

that is ended or is ending at issue 12 a new

five issue miniseries called Transformers escape

is coming in December Written by Brian Ruckley

art by Bethany McGuire Smith This continues the

world war or war world story, spills into this

all new limited series as Cybertron descends

into a state of war, countless civilians unaligned

with the Autobots, Decepticons, or any faction

are caught in the crossfire. Fortunately, a solution

may be coming. Wheeljack Hound and some of Cybertron's

greatest and most infamous scientists seek to

reactivate the Ark program and evacuate the planet

with huge spaceships. On the verge of war, will

their efforts be enough to escape? Full color

32 pages 399 I'm very interested in well, I'm

I'm interested in all the transformers comic

stuff but the the escape one just kind of spoke

to me at the time when I was reading this illicit

and and and all that I see yes Um, I think that's

all we got. I don't know if there's anything

else we need to bring up. I don't think so. I'm

trying to think if there's anything else that

majorly hit that's huge news. I know there's

not a date or anything yet for Earthrise, at

least I don't think there is as far as the Netflix

show goes. Of course, I haven't looked on Netflix

yet. Think it just dropped season two But it

could be wrong for Really? Oh, no. No, no, no.

No. I'm thinking not reverse. Yeah, that's cyber

verse just dropped season two on Netflix, but

Let's see so far I'm not seeing anything yet.

So I don't think I don't see anything this year.

Yeah, maybe not It's a bunch of other stuff hitting

Netflix though. So anyway Coming up next time

hopefully if schedules work out or if they don't

because Hopefully by next time folks I will actually

have my setup back and I will be doing podcasting

the proper way. It's supposed to be done Hopefully

next time we will have the Transformers origins

of a one. Mr. DJ Valentine So that's gonna be

a fun recording for us Where can the people find

you online sir? Well on the Twitter's at SCP

21 And I am at TF2 and Mike you can follow along

with the show at all things TF v3 Also follow

at GeekCastRadio, check us out on Facebook as

well. Transform, transcend and we'll see you

next time I guess? Sounds good!
